Gas distributor AusNet Services has acknowledged the issue and apologised to those affected, but said there was no quick fix. “We are aware that some customers in localised areas of Seddon and Yarraville have been experiencing low gas pressure during peak times,” a spokeswoman said. “Unfortunately, at peak times some older infrastructure is unable to support the increasing demand for gas.” Works are under way to replace older gas mains in Seddon, with plans to continue through to Yarraville. AusNet Services did not provide a timeline for when the works may be completed. “This is being done progressively to minimise

cost increases to customers … as this work is progressing, it will provide greater capacity to the area. “In the meantime, we are monitoring the matter and taking appropriate steps to remediate the issue.” The issue comes as the latest report by the Essential Services Commission shows energy bills will rise for some customers by more than $300 this year. Almost 13,000 Victorian customers were disconnected last quarter for failing to keep up with bill payments. Residents and businesses experiencing gas pressure problems are being asked to contact AusNet Services via 13 67 07.

Inner-west residents are shivering through winter nights as ageing infrastructure fails to keep up with the growing demand for gas. Residents in Seddon and Yarraville have been particularly hard hit by low gas pressure during peak times, but the problem has also surfaced in neighbouring areas from Footscray and Braybrook to Altona North and Newport. The issue has left a number of homes without hot water and others facing difficulty in heating, especially between 6 and 10pm. Seddon resident Mel Conian said her family had experienced the issue for the past two years, but it has been worse than ever this winter.

“We just assumed the problem was down to our plumber, but he fitted a bigger pipe and we still had the problems.” The mother of two said the lack of hot water had been upsetting for her baby and toddler as they faced the prospect of cold baths and showers. She criticised the lack of public information regarding the situation. “People are paying money to get plumbers to come out for no reason, they are being told there is nothing that can be done at their end and this is just frustrating.” A post by Ms Conian to social media about her concerns attracted a flood of similar complaints.

The Netherlands is a long way from Footscray but that is where this non-cyclist went to learn more about designing a world-class active transport city. ‘Active transport’ is something we need to be thinking about and it’s something I hope to engage the community in a discussion about. As a city facing exponential population growth and greater urban density, the time is now to be planning for the kind of City we want to be in 2030. With congestion on our local roads set to increase, we need to talk about urban mobility. About 70 per cent of journeys are made by bike in the City of Amsterdam as there was a grass-roots uprising in the 70s that reversed the idea of ‘car as king’. Long story short, without intervention the cycling nation would have looked very different today and there are lessons in it for us in Melbourne’s west. Hub could spell end for kinders By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has adopted its annual budget, despite concern that allocating $4.59 million to build an Altona early years hub will seal the fate of local kindergartens. The budget includes more than $34 million on capital works, $118 million on operational expenditure and an average rate increase of 2 per cent. It includes $7.4 million for open space, $6.7 million for roads, $3.8 million for footpaths and bike paths, $2.7 million for plant

and equipment and $11.4 million for buildings, with the hub being the most expensive project. Councillors Tony Briffa and Michael Grech said while they supported the overall budget, the funding allocation for a new hub on the Altona P-9 College site meant supporting the closure of Altona and Seaholme kindergartens. Cr Briffa told last week’s council meeting that the hub and the future of the kindergartens were intertwined. “They are inextricably linked and we are making an allocation of $4.59 million for a hub that is going to make local kindergartens

unviable, so that is definitely my consideration,” Cr Briffa said. Cr Grech asked if the previous council, which did not include himself or Cr Briffa, had known local kinders would be closed when it voted in favour of a new hub. “When council resolved on the 26th of April, 2016, to construct a hub, were council fully informed that in order to make a hub viable, kindergartens would have to be closed?” Community wellbeing director Peter Hunt replied that the councillors had been briefed a number of times.

“I think we had three fortnights in a row when we had briefings to the council so the councillors were well aware of the challenges posed by a small catchment and an oversupply of places.” Cr Briffa moved a budget amendment to allocate but not use the money for the hub until the future of the kindergartens was decided, but this only gained support from Cr Grech. The council meeting heard that a report on kinders in the precinct would come to the council in September and a contract to build the hub was expected to be awarded in October.

A new Footscray food and arts venue has been given the green light despite concerns from neighbours about the likely noise impact. Lickety Split, a multi-use venue proposed for a disused Moreland Street warehouse by the operators of the adjoining Back Alley Sally’s bar, was approved with a range of conditions at last week’s Maribyrnong council planning meeting. The proposal for 38-40 Moreland Street includes a cafe and beer garden, shared workspace, communal hub for artists and small business, a tattoo artist, salon or barbershop and a bocce court. The food and drink premises will include areas within the warehouse as well as a coffee operation and food van in the outdoor area. Plans for a microbrewery to be included on the site were rejected due to zoning issues. Councillors last month deferred a decision on the proposal until an acoustic report was submitted. The acoustic report by Noise Consulting recommended a number of measures to lessen noise impacts to the surrounding area. The application attracted 16 objections, relating to noise, patron behaviour, insufficient parking, inappropriate trading hours and waste management. Following a planning forum held in February, the applicant revised the proposal to remove live music, reduce patron numbers to 110 and reduce the operating hours of the liquor licence to an 11pm close on Friday and Saturday, an hour later than objectors had requested. A Williamstown church minister who uses Star Wars to preach redemption believes people haven’t lost their religion – but simply that they were “just more honest” in the 2016 census. Reverend Avril Hannah-Jones, from Williamstown Uniting Church thinks that previously people may have answered according to their parents’ religion. “I don’t think there’s been such a great change in the number of people who are ‘no religion’ but I think a lot of the time people have ticked the church they were born in to or baptised in to,” Dr Hannah-Jones said. “There’s always been a huge difference between what people tick on the census and the people who actually belong to a church or go to a church.” Australian Bureau of Statistics released the results of the 2016 census last week. In Hobsons Bay, the most common responses for religion were no religion (30.9 per cent), Catholic (27.1), not stated (8.6), Anglican (7) and Eastern Orthodox (5.7). In Maribyrnong, the tallies were no religion (36.4 per cent), Catholic (20.2), not stated (10.4), Buddhism (8.3) and Islam (4.3). Dr Hannah-Jones, whose church welcomes the LGBTIQ community and supports marriage equality, said there were many misconceptions about Christians. “I think the majority of Christians are actually in favour of marriage equality, but we do get some very loud church leaders and very loud Christian politicians opposed to it,” she said. “I think most people who don’t have much contact with churches assume that’s what all Christians believe.” She brings people into the fold using science fiction and popular culture to appeal to worshippers. “I think the first six Star Wars

Brooklyn gears up for fight By Goya Dmytryshchak Residents surrounding Melbourne’s most polluted suburb have welcomed Hobsons Bay council’s decision to push for a truck ban on Millers Road. The government’s Environment Effects Statement predicts an increase of up to 14,800 trucks a day by 2031, compared to 4500 trucks a day now, in Millers Road at Altona North and Brooklyn. The council had previously called for a night and weekend curfew but toughened its stance in response to lobbying from residents of Brooklyn, Altona North, Spotswood and South Kingsville. Its submission also calls for monitoring stations for air quality to become permanent and form part of the Environment Protection Authority monitoring network. Brooklyn resident Chris Dunlevy, a member of the Don’t Destroy Millers Road lobby group, said that by the government’s own estimate there would be a 147 per cent increase in heavy vehicles on Millers Road as a result of the new toll road. “We are very angry that all the hard work that Brooklyn residents have put in over the years in eliminating the foul odours from the industries

nearby will all be washed away and we will now be choked by truck fumes and gridlock instead,” he said. “We are already Melbourne’s most polluted suburb. “We have hardly any public transport, just some buses that are frequently late – how are they going to fight 14,800 trucks?”

Mr Dunlevy said he was not opposed to trucks, but rather to tolls on a freeway that had already been paid for in taxes. “This new road tunnel will force the trucks down Millers because they refuse to build a new on-off ramp for them. It’s a raw deal for them and a raw deal for us.”

Police are seeking witnesses to a brawl in a Footscray barbershop in which a man was hit in the head with a tomahawk. Hair clippers, chairs and a broom were also used as weapons in the clash involving up to 15 men at the Nicholson Street business. A group of men who entered the shop about 5pm on June 23 became involved in several fights with customers in the barbershop. One man was struck to the back of the head with a tomahawk and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. About $600 was taken from the cash register during the brawl, which did not involve any staff. Police believe those involved were known to each other. Benjamin Millar

Woman, kittens in fire escape

A West Footscray woman and her five pet kittens escaped after a fire broke out in their Barkly Street unit on Sunday night. It’s believed a pot left unattended on the stove sparked the blaze about 9.30pm while the woman slept. Fire crews helped the woman and her kittens. The woman was treated on scene by paramedics.

An eight-hour blues benefit gig to support the homeless will be held in Altona in September. Guitarist Greg Dodd started the Blues for Lost Souls music charity event five years ago to raise money and collect food and clothing for people on the street. For the past two years, the event has raised enough to buy two vans for charities Anonymous X and The Big Umbrella. Dodd is performing with two bands on the bill, which is headlined by Australian blues legend Chris Wilson. Dodd said money raised would go directly to the charities helping the homeless. “It’s something that is under-resourced and under-funded and people are sleeping on the streets,” he said. “My wife works within the mental illness field and domestic violence – she’s an outreach

worker – so, of course, I know what goes on out in the world. “I’ve been into the city many, many times, obviously, and I’ve seen people sleeping on the footpath and it’s not good, you know, and it’s getting worse. “Being a musician, we can hold these type of events … if there’s some sort of crisis somewhere musicians are generally asked to put on something or be part of an event.” Since Dodd’s event started, his muso friends in regional Victoria have held sister events supporting the cause. Battle looms over new proposal By Benjamin Millar A major new development of an industrial West Footscray site has attracted more than 80 objections from neighbouring residents. The $26 million development of a disused site at 25-27 Indwe Street proposes building 177 warehouses, offices, a childcare centre, restricted retail premises and parking. The 72,400-square-metre site is zoned industrial but bordered on two sides by residential properties and on a third side by Stony Creek. A report prepared for CostaFox

Developments, lodged with the planning application, suggests the proposal conforms with local and state planning policies.

“State planning policy seeks to increase job opportunities close to where people live and local planning policy identifies the site as a core employment area,” it states. “Redevelopment of the site has the opportunity to contribute positively to the Indwe and Cala street streetscapes.” But residents have banded together to fight the proposal, arguing it will clog residential streets, increase the number of trucks in the neighbourhood and destroy parklands. Pia Davis, of Wefo Residents Group, said that although most residents supported growth in the area, they were against the scale of the

proposed industrial development and would rather see housing on the site. “We are worried about traffic flow, parking and noise pollution,” she said. Ms Davis pointed to Maribyrnong council’s 2011 Housing Strategy, which flags the site as a “substantial change area” suited to catering for residential growth. Wefo Residents Group is hoping to hold further meetings with the developer. A Facebook page has been set up to discuss the proposed development and a public meeting to discuss the proposal has been planned for this Sunday.

Altona is now home to one of the best places to escape the wintry chill with the opening of Melbourne’s first public Finnish sauna. The Finnish Society of Melbourne, based at Finnish Hall in Pier Street, has built the only sauna outside of a gym in Melbourne’s west. Community members previously had to travel to the Japanese bathhouse in Collingwood for the closest experience. Society chairman and Finnish sauna expert Jori Tossavainen said interested locals could book the sauna, which comfortably seats about five or six people. “I have a sauna at least four days a week, sometimes every day,” he said. “I find it very relaxing when you get really tired muscles. “It’s very good for helping you to unwind and sleep a lot better.

Museum shines new light on art Scienceworks is inviting people to have their sense of reality challenged at a new exhibition merging science with art. LightTime features works by 11 experimental artists, including Mitchell Nordine (pictured), who uses artificial intelligence software that responds to music with laser beams. His 300-square-metre lattice, created with Josh Batty, has 10 holographic images floating above viewers’ heads. Kit Webster has created an infinity room designed to make those who enter lose sense of where they are. Skunk Control, a collective of engineers and scientists from Victoria University, has created an infinite field of glowing mechatronic flowers that changes the way light is viewed. There is also a light-and-sound box from artist (((20hz))) that produces physical responses activated by hand motions. Scienceworks manager Nurin Veis said LightTime was a new frontier for the museum. “By merging science with art, we hope to unveil some of the fascinating intricacies of light, sound and optics and to show the connections between the beauty we experience and the science that enables it,” Dr Veis said.

A lawyer convicted of laundering money allegedly given to him by a man accused of the notorious Richmond road gang robbery will spend at least three years behind bars. Judge Phillip Coish sentenced John Anile, 58, to a maximum five years imprisonment with a minimum of three years in the Melbourne County Court on Friday. Judge Coish took into account Anile’s previous good character. Anile, a well-known solicitor from Williamstown, was found guilty by a jury of obtaining financial advantage by deception and laundering $400,000 allegedly given to him by former kickboxing champion Percy Lanciana in 1994. The case against Anile was part of Operation Tideland, a taskforce that investigated a slick armed robbery crew that was behind one of Melbourne’s most notorious heists. In the 1994 Richmond heist, syndicate members dressed as road workers allegedly held up an Armaguard truck to steal $2.4 million. According to court documents, Anile was caught in a covert recording in 2013 saying to a witness; “I know exactly where the f---ing money came from”. In another meeting, the witness speculated the money came from a train robbery, to which Anile replies: “You don’t have to be a genius. They had a bunch of cash and they did not work.” Mr Lanciana was charged with the Richmond robbery last year. He will contest the accusations at a committal hearing in October.

Appeal court adds to sentence By Goya Dmytryshchak A man jailed for 12 years for importing ice valued at $60 million in car engines has had his sentence increased to 20 years. Jared Samuel Brown, 34, has been convicted of two charges of importing a total of nearly 50 kilograms of methamphetamine. The Director of Public Prosecutions appealed against the term and argued it was manifestly inadequate. The Court of Appeal this month agreed and increased Brown’s sentence from

12 years with a minimum of seven, to 20 years with a non-parole period of 15 years. Court of Appeal judges Chris Maxwell, Joseph Santamaria and Christopher Beale said Brown’s offending involved the importation of dangerous drugs in huge quantities – totalling almost 65 times the commercial quantity threshold. In March, 2013, a vessel carrying, among other goods, four motor vehicle engines containing about 4.4 kilograms of methamphetamine arrived in Melbourne from

were 103 packages containing 44.6 kilograms of pure methamphetamine. The packages were detected by authorities and the drugs substituted with salt before the packages were replaced in the engines. Brown was arrested in August after taking the packages to his apartment in Richmond. The Australian Federal Police had not been aware of the first importation until Brown’s arrest, when they discovered messages containing extensive details about his involvement on his phone.

California. Brown and another man took the engines to an Altona premises where a friend of Brown’s lived. The court heard the engines were dismantled and the packages removed, before Brown stored the drugs in a cubby house at his parents’ home in Warragul. Brown later handed the drugs over to a man in a carpark at Chadstone shopping centre. In July the same year, another vessel arrived in Melbourne from California containing nine motor vehicle engines. The South Sudan story More than 1.5 million South Sudanese have fled their war-torn country seeking refuge since conflict erupted there almost four years ago, according to the UN Refugee Agency. Until the Australian Bureau of Statistics crunches the latest Census data, Victoria’s current South Sudanese population remains unknown. But walk around Sunshine or Footscray and it’s clear many have decided to call Melbourne’s west home. Sunshine resident Fred Pase thinks stories about the so-called Apex gang have led to misconceptions about the South Sudanese community in Victoria. So he’s helped organise an information session at Albion’s St Theresa’s Primary School on Saturday, July 15, so he and others can learn about this community’s rich culture and history. “This is an important opportunity to learn about the South Sudanese community in Sunshine and to meet them and hear first-hand

of their experiences of being refugees in Australia,” Mr Pase said. “There’s a lot of Sudanese here in Sunshine … I know very little [about their culture] and it’s going to help me enormously to understand where they come from and how they got here.” The retired plasterer has co-organised the event for Pax Christi, a global Christian peace movement. Cancer care starts here Pharmacists are joining the battle to beat breast cancer under a pilot program on trial in Maribyrnong. The Priceline pharmacy at Highpoint Shopping Centre is one of the first to undergo a training program helping staff to understand breast cancer risk and symptoms and raise conversations with customers about the importance of regular breast screening. The BreastScreen Victoria campaign is part of a wider project aiming to boost screening rates, especially among women of Arabic and Italian backgrounds. Pharmacy manager Rikinder Shergill said the role of pharmacists has evolved, putting them on the front line of primary health care. “There’s more awareness that pharmacists have a lot of knowledge and not just about

medications,” she said. “Sometimes you just want to have a general conversation rather than having a formal appointment. GP clinics are very structured and they only have a certain amount of time that’s allocated per patient.” Ms Shergill said people may be more open to seeking advice in a pharmacy than in a clinic. “There is also pre-screening – recognising symptoms or family history and letting people know they should consider a certain type of treatment, or speak to their GP about it.” Ms Shergill said the Highpoint location is well suited to promoting breast screening because there is a clinic nearby. Vandals barking up wrong trees By Goya Dmytryshchak Screened fences have been erected around Norfolk pines planted on the Altona foreshore after vandals destroyed several heritage-listed trees. Over the years, foreshore trees have been occasionally vandalised, but not to the extent of the latest attack, which has resulted in steel and mesh fences put up for the first time. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson described the wilful damage as “a frustrating

shame” and said that the vandals seemed to be putting better views of the bay ahead of the environment. “These iconic trees should be seen as enhancing our landscaping not blocking the bay views,” she said. “We will continue to replant trees that have been senselessly damaged or destroyed.” The avenue of pines, first planted in the 1970s, is listed on the Victorian Heritage database as being of historic and aesthetic significance. The fencing is expected to remain for about

a year until the trees are established. On some vandalism sites, the council erects signs to block views the perpetrators seek to enhance. The signs state: “Tree vandals have been destroying your environment”. Some residents have called for tougher deterrents, such as bigger fines or the planting of two trees for each one destroyed. The art of healing Two new exhibitions opening in Footscray are highlighting the power of art to heal and connect. Scattered Tribes: Healing Through Kinship is a journey in reconnecting with country, story and each other. The exhibition presents work by renowned artist Ngardarb Francine Riches, a Bardi Jawi and Karajarri woman who has been practising arts for more 30 years. “Healing through the arts and exploring who we are in the context of our kinship brings about healing to our souls,” she said. “It connects us to our families and culture. It gives us self-esteem and respect for ourselves and others.” The exhibition includes a series of photographic portraits featuring local community members, collaboratively created with Chilean-born portrait photographer Arun Munoz. “Feeling welcome and part of the group put a smile on my face,” Munoz said.

The Yelmo-Garang exhibition, named after the Kulin word for nest, has been curated by Kate ten Buuren and Kat Clarke of indigenous collective “this mob”. Kate ten Buuren said the artists had transformed the Gabriel Gallery into a welcoming studio and installation space, inviting people to collaborate, create and be part of this mob’s community over a cup of tea. “A lot of people don’t feel comfortable in the ‘white wall gallery’ space, so we’re trying to shift how people engage in those spaces and the idea of what you can do in them,” she said. I would probably like to see a train station on the line here since we do have the tracks and we do have the boom gates and we do have the traffic that gets interrupted by trains, but we don’t get the service of those trains. A lot of development is going to happen further down in Blackshaws Road, there’s going to be an influx of people, meaning influx of cars. There’s no infrastructure for that … so I think a train station would be fantastic. The nearest station is a 25-minute walk which is just a little bit long. For people who are older, for women on their own to walk at night, it’s not so fantastic.

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? JB: Is there a lower rating than zero? If so, let’s go with that. FB: What is your signature dish? JB: That depends … what would you like on your toast? I can do white, wholemeal – or, if you’re feeling really adventurous, I can give multi-grain a go. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? JB: Something with lots of courses, preferably stretched out over days or weeks. You see, EATING food I have no problem with – I like just about everything. MAKING IT? That’s the issue. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? JB: I don’t watch any of them, but my wife, Vanessa, and daughters, Jade and Tyler, seem to love them all, so I hear phrases like “made with love” and “hero of the dish” a lot around the house. FB: What is your favourite food? JB: I really enjoy food – a broad variety of different cuisines from all over the world. It’s one of life’s great pleasures. But if I had to nominate one simple go-to, I’d go with Vanessa’s spaghetti bolognese. It’s just perfect and I honestly can’t remember ever not being in the mood for it. There are a lot of exotic food options out there, many of which I love. But if I bring it back to basics, her pasta sauce is as good as I’ve tasted anywhere. That would be my number one comfort food. FB: What is your favourite drink? JB: Banana smoothie with a pinch of cinnamon. Another reliable go-to. And I’m actually capable of making that myself without completely destroying the kitchen. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? JB: My dad, Vanessa’s dad and my two grandmothers, all of whom are no longer with us – so it would be fantastic to get one more night with all of them. Mind you, the goodbye at the end would be pretty rough. And, of course, Vanessa – I couldn’t invite them all back from the after-life only to have all my worldly belongings dumped out on the nature strip the next morning. It’s the old saying: “Happy wife … your stuff stays in the wardrobe.” FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? JB: If, like me, you wouldn’t know a soup ladle from a spatula, fall in love with an unbelievably good cook whose mum is a caterer and whose uncle is a chef. Now that may sound rather specific, but I can assure you it works. At least for me. I’m not As so sure Vanessa is quite as thrilled always, if you have any from the other side of the equation. She’d probably say: “Don’t marry a culinary ignoramus.” And maybe she wouldn’t recipes, tips or other include “culinary”, which would also be a fair call.

The Hobsons Bay City Council has prepared Amendment C88 to the Hobsons Bay Planning Scheme.

The purpose of the proposed amendment is â€“ s 4O ENSURE THAT THE STANDARDS IN RELATION TO AND THE PRIORITIES TO BE GIVEN to the construction, inspection, maintenance and repair of the roads and the classes of roads to which the road management plan applies under section 41 of the Act are safe, efficient and appropriate for the use and needs of Councilâ€™s community, and the wider public; s 4O IMPROVE THE SYSTEMS PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES PREVIOUSLY ADOPTED AND used by Council in connection with its road management functions and the discharge of its duty to inspect, maintain and repair public roads for which Council is the coordinating road authority or the responsible road authority, based on reasonable policy and operational decisions and the resources available to and the priorities of Council; s 4O SET MORE RELEVANT AND ATTAINABLE STANDARDS AND BETTER POLICIES TO enable Council to discharge its duties and perform its road management functions under the Act; s 4O MAKE CHANGES ARISING FROM ROADS OR PARTS OF ROADS UNDER THE administration of Council being, or having become, roads or parts of roads for which Council is the coordinating road authority or being, or having become, public roads since the existing road management plan was made by Council; and s 4O MAKE OTHER CHANGES TO THE PROCEDURES OR RESPONSIBILITIES OF #OUNCIL which are of an administrative, declaratory or machinery nature. The general purport of the proposed amendment is that: s )T WILL INCORPORATE APPROPRIATE CROSS REFERENCING TO UPDATED POLICY documents and procedures of Council; s )T WILL ADOPT REVISED CONSTRUCTION REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE STANDARDS IN order to reflect updated and revised specifications and procedures of Council; s )T WILL BETTER REmECT THE CURRENT AND FUTURE FUNDING LEVELS AND RESOURCES of Council; s )T WILL IN RELATION TO THE ROADWAYS PATHWAYS ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE AND ROAD RELATED INFRASTRUCTURE FOR WHICH #OUNCIL IS RESPONSIBLE TO WHAT ARE considered by Council to be more relevant, appropriate and attainable standards and procedures), raise standards and establish new procedures in order to provide for frequent inspections and maintenance of public roads and to increase the periods of time within which defects are to be repaired; s )T WILL IMPROVE THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES AND SYSTEMS WITHIN #OUNCIL and enable Council to better deal with changes of a declaratory or machinery nature; and s )T WILL GENERALLY IMPROVE THE MANNER IN WHICH #OUNCIL UTILISING THE ROAD management plan as a policy document, performs its road management functions. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir discovers there’s plenty brewing at Two Birds It’s taken us ages to check out Two Birds Brewing. As soon as we amble through the doors of this Spotswood brew emporium, we regret that has been the case as we take to the place with alacrity. We are very interested to see how the food will shape up, having checked out the menu before we departed home. On the one hand, we are delighted to see a list that is so deeply into hipster food of the American style yet unlike anything else we’ve seen in Melbourne. On the other, we wonder if this will be bar food that is really snack food – we fret, just a little, that we will spend a packet yet nevertheless leave without feeling fully satisfied. There proves to be no such problems for us at Two Birds – we enjoy a fine meal and consider the pricing just right. House-made pickles ($8) are superb. Carrot, green beans, celery, zucchini, onion – here is a wonderful fantasia of colours and textures, with each of the vegetables evincing different flavours. Croquettes ($10 for four) present as gorgeous-looking crisp orbs – we can’t wait to grab them. Their promise is fully realised – inside each of them is a lipsmackingly good and gooey mix of macaroni, cheese and pimento, all with just the right level of spice heat. We move on to the “bigs” portion of the menu …

The one remaining issue to be resolved surrounds what was always going to be Bennie’s main choice – the smoked pork hot dog. As Bennie himself puts it: “How good can a hot dog be for $17?” With its fine sausage and dressings of bacon, paprika mustard and ketchup, it hits nice heights in terms of flavour and eating pleasure. But he reckons a right price for it would be about $12. The kipfler potato salad that accompanies his hot dog is very fine. The only problem with my chicken schnitzel “on brioche” ($17) is that there is, so far as I can tell, nothing even remotely “schnitzel” about it. Instead, this is a regal, sooper dooper chicken burger that makes me very, very happy. Around a nice slab of chook are, according to the menu, nothing more than “special sauce, American cheese and lettuce”, yet the flavour impact is way greater than that suggests. SPORT Falcons look for finals momentum City West Falcons welcomed back star shooter Kathleen Knott in style last week, returning to the winners’ list and solidifying their place in the Victorian Netball League top four. After a tight loss the previous week against table-leading Melbourne University, the Falcons bounced back with a comfortable 60-54 win over ACU Sovereigns last Wednesday. The win keeps the Falcons a game clear of fifth-placed Geelong with six rounds left in the season. Falcons coach Marg Lind said she was impressed with the Sovereigns but always felt like she had control of the contest. “We had Kath Knott back for her first game in three weeks after a calf injury, so we were a little bit rusty, but I thought as the game progressed we showed some really good signs,” she said.

Knott took little time getting back into the swing of the contest, making nine of her 10 shots in the first quarter as the Falcons opened up an early lead. Accuracy would become the story of the night, with the Sovereigns having one more shot at goal for the quarter but going to the first break down 15-13. Knott partnered well with Steph Puopolo during the course of the night, missing just three shots between them in the first three quarters as the lead continued to grow. By the time the final quarter started, the Falcons had a nine-goal advantage, with the Sovereigns shooting at just 84 per cent across the night. The Falcons were phenomenal, with a 93 per cent shooting efficiency. Knott played the whole match and finished with 43 goals from 45 shots, while the

mid-court play of centre Molly Jovic was crucial to the final result. Lind said that while the win was pleasing, there was still plenty for her side to improve. “Our scoring rate was excellent, but we probably didn’t turn the ball over enough defensively, which meant they got plenty of looks at the goals,” Lind said. “We were able to get ourselves into good positions under the post, so that helped us with our accuracy.” Lind said the Falcons were well placed as the finals neared. “It’s a re-jigged team, so we think we have a lot of improvement in us compared to some other teams,” she said. “We don’t want to drop any games in the run home.” Tara Murray

Trio lines up for Big V By Lance Jenkinson Three Williamstown-trained tennis young guns have been selected to represent the School Sports Victoria 12-and-under team at the Bruce Cup Tennis Championships in Shepparton later this year. Stephanie Webb, Grace Darcy and Harriet Stewart, who train under coach James Wong at the Bayside Williamstown campus courts, will take on the best schoolgirls from across the nation after qualifying for the Big V team. Wong was thrilled to see this trio chosen. “It’s just their work rate and dedication and the goals they aspire to achieve,” he said. “The journey they’ve been on has been filled with hard work and they’ve obviously had to make sacrifices. “They’ve also had some setbacks with injury, but come back strong.

“They’re quite resilient girls and have strong support from their parents, so they’re definitely on the right track.” Webb, who travels to Williamstown from Northcote High School for training, is one of Victoria’s most exciting talents for her age group. Ranked No.1 in the state, she possesses a big serve and is strong from the baseline, but her best asset is her mental toughness. Nothing seems to faze her on a tennis court. “She’s far above anyone else in Victoria for her age group,” Wong said. “She’s definitely got all the attributes to go far in this sport. She dropped only one game in all of the trials.” Darcy has been coached by Wong for six years. The Newport resident was forced to take the long route to selection due to a lower ranking. But the Loreto Mandeville Hall student took it

all in her stride and emerged with a Victorian nod. “She had to do an extra day of trials compared to the other girls and she blitzed them,” Wong said. “She didn’t drop many games and didn’t drop a match at all during trials, so she made it through very comfortably. “She’s quite a rangy sort of girl and quite a big server, so she’s starting to use her power and her athletic attributes.” Stewart, a Williamstown resident, had to battle through the pain barrier to earn selection. The Williamstown High School student entered the qualifiers with a shoulder injury, but battled through. “Her preparation wasn’t great going in, but just her courage and fight to make the team was great,” Wong said. “She fought really hard.”

With seven rounds to go, the Vikings have time to steady the ship, but they do not want to leave it too much longer to hit their peak. The draw over the next month is not too kind, with the Vikings set to face second-placed Spotswood at home on Saturday, followed by trips to Werribee Districts and Albion. Altona conceded seven of the eight goals in the first quarter against Hoppers Crossing and never recovered. In a head-scratching performance, the Vikings could only manage seven goals for the game, despite having the lion’s share of inside 50s.

Spotswood will also be searching for answers after a humiliating 76-point loss to Deer Park in a top-of-the-table clash at John McLeod Oval. The Woodsmen were beaten by half-time after the Lions roared with 10 goals to one in the first half. It did not cost second-placed Spotswood a spot on the ladder, but it remains to be seen how much psychological damage was inflicted on them by the four-peat premiers. In division 2, Yarraville-Seddon reminded the competition of the threat it poses with a 53-point win over North Footscray at McLean Reserve. Hard-nosed defence has been a trend for Yarraville-Seddon ever since they coughed up 22 goals to North Footscray. Yarraville-Seddon is playing a finals brand of football now and has taken over from North Footscray at the top of the ladder on percentage. It’s probably best to hold off anointing a premiership favourite until Yarraville-Seddon and North Footscray meet again in the penultimate round on August 12. A second win of the year for Newport Power has it back in the finals hunt.

The Power knocked off fourth-placed Albanvale by 30 points at Robert Bruce Oval to move within a game of the top four. Youssef El Hawli and Mitchell Taleb kicked five goals each for the Power. West Footscray fell short by 15 points against third-placed Manor Lakes at Shorten Reserve. In division 3, Parkside returned to the winners’ list with a 40-point victory over North Sunshine at Dempster Park. Braybrook snapped a six-game losing streak with a 28-point win over Sanctuary Lakes at Featherbrook Reserve. Playing co-coach Jamie Lane and Chris Sotiropoulos were on target for the Bombers with four goals each. It was a weird old day for Laverton. The Magpies were on track to cause an upset, leading Tarneit by 16 points at half-time. The Magpies were still in the hunt at three-quarter time, trailing by less than a kick. Footscray went down to Collingwood on the last kick of the day in the Victorian Football League at Victoria Park on Sunday. Needing a goal to force a draw, Bulldogs forward Anthony Bruhn lined up with a set shot after the siren and hit the post, leaving his side five points short. Nick Jamieson kicked three goals for the Bulldogs, while Matthew Boyd, Clay Smith and Tate Short were the standouts. Fourth-placed Footscray travels to Sandringham on Sunday.

Altona Magic defeated co-tenants Altona East Phoenix 3-0 in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Paisley Park on Saturday, but it could be the last time these teams cross paths in a league match for years. The Magic is closing in on promotion to the National Premier League, holding a whopping 10-point lead at the top of the ladder, while the Phoenix is in danger of relegation. It has largely been a friendly rivalry between the Magic and Phoenix, co-existing under the one roof. They talk in the carpark, nod their hellos outside the clubrooms and generally get on well, but when they face each other they can be the fiercest of rivals for those 90 minutes. “There’s some fantastic people at their club,” Magic coach Goran Lozanovski said. “But when we go out there, we give it a crack, so it’s always nice to get one over your local rivals.” Altona Magic is on a mission to join Victoria’s elite in the NPL. This team is simply too good for state league 1 and it’s starting to show. Two weeks ago, the Magic beat North Sunshine Eagles, one of their closest threats to the crown, by a massive six goals. Lozanovski could see a big scoreline coming, such was the confidence his side was playing with. “I did say a few weeks back that some team would cop a battering and unfortunately for North Sunshine it was them,” he said. For Lozanovski, it’s about results over style. He arrived at the Magic this season with one word on his mind: promotion. However, the Magic would have got a 10-out-of-10 for their eye-catching football in the win over Altona East. “As far as I’m concerned, it’s all about the three points,” Lozanovski said. “Breathing space [on the ladder] is always great to have, but it’s just round 14. “We’ve got a 10-point gap, but that can be turned around quite quickly.” If this is to be the last hallway rumble for years, it will be remembered as the Melvin Becket show. Becket produced a great performance and topped it off with one of the great goals in a Magic-Phoenix derby. The midfielder picked up the ball, left a Phoenix defender for dead with his turn of speed and then unleashed a long range strike that thumped into the underside of the bar and just went over the line. Footscray has crushed Southern United 8-1 in a Hockey Victoria women’s premier league mid-table clash at the Footscray hockey centre on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored four goals in each half with Georgia Hopkins leading the way with a hat-trick. Altona got the better of Waverley in a 2-0 win at Hedley Hull Field. Jess Brennan scored both goals for the Seagulls. In the men’s premier league, Footscray played out a 3-3 draw with Southern United, while Altona came back from two goals down to tie 2-2 with Waverley.

Rugby league

Altona Roosters fell agonisingly short of upsetting reigning NRL Victoria first grade champions and western suburbs rivals Werribee Bears at Bruce Comben Reserve on Saturday. The Roosters went down 30-28 after an entertaining, high-scoring game. Altona sits a game outside the top four with five rounds to go.
