Williamstown North Primary School grade 6 pupil, Eddie Morgan, is headed to Japan to represent Australia in baseball. He will play in an under-12 representative team competing in the 35th IBA-Boys International Baseball Championship in Tokyo from July 17 to August 3. He is one of 16 boys from Victoria chosen to represent Australia in the international competition. Eddie started playing baseball with the Williamstown Wolves two years ago and quickly found his passion for the sport. He said he was excited about playing in Japan. “We’ll be competing in two tournaments against a variety of different countries,” Eddie said. “I hope to be a professional one day, playing in the major league.” He will be staying with a Japanese family whose son also plays baseball. Williamstown Baseball Club president Daniel Chircop said the club was proud of Eddie. “He is extremely passionate about the game of baseball and he sets an example for work ethic within our junior program,” he said. The club is hosting ‘come and try’ days in junior baseball and T-ball for boys and girls aged five to 17. They are on June 24 and July 29 from 10am-noon at Greenwich Reserve in Newport. I feel by destroying our centres, we are destroying our communities.” The state government has contributed $1.6 million for a new early-years hub to be built on the Altona P-9 College site, with the council to contribute about $5.6 million. The hub would have 198 places. Last week’s meeting heard that it would cost $3.8 million to upgrade the existing kindergartens. The council voted to consider a further report on early years services in Altona and Seaholme Parents campaigning to save Altona’s and the matters raised in the petition and joint kindergartens at the Hobsons Bay council letter at its September 12 meeting. meeting. Two Altona kindergartens have won a reprieve after Hobsons Bay council delayed a decision on their closure. Close to 100 protesters, some holding signs saying “Save Altona’s kinders”, attended last week’s council meeting at which the issue was being heard for the third time. A council officer’s report recommended that Altona Kindergarten and Somers Parade Kindergarten be closed due to a new hub being built at Altona P-9 College. Cr Tony Briffa tabled a petition with 848 signatures and a joint letter signed by committee

of management heads of both kindergartens, pleading for them to remain open. The petition stated in part: “These kinders have been part of the community for more than 50 years. They exceed national quality standards, are financially viable and are loved by the community and our children.” Cr Michael Grech told last week’s meeting it was important to keep community kindergartens. “I went to Russell Court kinder in Altona Meadows and, funnily enough, so did my wife,” he said. “This year we were lucky enough to have our three-year-old son follow in our footsteps. Cash boost to transform learning A further $10.6 million has been allocated to bold plans to turn Footscray into an education precinct. The money will be spent as part of the Footscray Learning Precinct project, which is aimed at linking, expanding and upgrading schools across Melbourne’s inner west. The new funding was announced last week by state Education Minister James Merlino, Williamstown MP Wade Noonan and Footscray MP Marsha Thomson, bringing the project’s total funding to $15 million.

Mr Merlino said the project would bring providers together in three hubs to provide a shared approach to education that would help students reach their goals from pre-school to postgraduate. The three hubs – northern, central and southern – include Farnsworth Avenue (encompassing Footscray City College) in the north and Hyde and Nicholson streets (Footscray City Primary School and Victoria University) in the south. “The Footscray Learning Precinct is an Australian-first that will transform education in the inner-west,” Mr Merlino said.

A report on the project recommends: • Building a new junior secondary campus (years 7 -9) in Pilgrim Street, Seddon; • Reconfiguration of Footscray City College to become a senior secondary school (years 10-12); • Redeveloping Gilmore College for Girls as a new co-educational junior secondary school (years 7-9); • Integrating a children’s centre at Footscray City Primary School, as well as an expansion of the school; • Creating a new science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning centre

“I recently had a lovely beef stew and homemade muffins delivered to me,” Mr Wikiel said. “I would highly recommend the program to others within the community.” If you would like to share a meal, know someone who would benefit from an extra meal or would like to sign up as a Casserole Club cook, visit casseroleclub.com.au or call 9688 0342.

Footscray police are investigating the theft of mail in Yarraville. Investigators have been told a male offender was captured on CCTV entering the foyer of a Ballarat Street apartment at 4am on May 2. Once inside the man appears to rummage through unlocked letterboxes. He has also opened several locked letterboxes and stolen the contents. The man is of Caucasian appearance 20 to 30-years-old, wearing a dark red hoodie with white writing, blue jeans, a black and white trucker cap and black socks. Footscray Police Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Waters described the act as serious. “It’s a fairly brazen act considering the presence of CCTV at the location and the fact that the suspect makes no attempt to disguise his appearance,” Acting Senior Sergeant Waters said. The theft of mail in Victoria can lead to 10 years in prison. “We encourage residents to lock all mail boxes and receptacles to prevent unauthorised access to their mail and to report any thefts as soon as detected,” Acting Senior Sergeant Waters said. Police have released images of the man they believe can help with their inquiries. Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Footscray Police on 8398 9800.

who appreciate having tasty, home-cooked meals delivered to their door,” Cr Cumming said. “It’s perfect for community members who love cooking and want to be actively involved in their community and residents who may need a helping hand when it comes to meal time.” Cr Cumming said the club was flexible, convenient and connected older residents with their neighbours. Bill Wikiel from Footscray is glad to be involved in the program, which runs Australia-wide.

A Maribyrnong program is encouraging neighbours to do something great with an extra plate and deliver home-cooked meals to each other. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the Casserole Club was all about residents sharing home-made meals with older community members who might not be able to cook for themselves. “Through the simple act of sharing food, the club brings people together and strengthens relationships with older community members

at Victoria University on the corner of Ballarat Road and Tiernan streets; and • Investigating site opportunities at Footscray City Primary School for sports and recreation facilities. The final details will be announced at the end of this year following consultation with local school communities and agreement from school councils. Council backs tunnel protest By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council last week voted to help residents campaign against the negative impacts of the West Gate Tunnel project, with one councillor calling it the “Maribyrnong bypass”. While truck curfews will be implemented in Maribyrnong, Millers Road in Hobsons Bay will see up to 10,300 more trucks a day by 2031 as a result of the project. Hobsons Bay residents have formed a new lobby group called Don’t Destroy Millers Road.

The council voted to “conduct a public campaign and a public meeting to encourage, support and assist Hobsons Bay community members and groups to make their own submissions” on the project. “It is not an alternative to the West Gate,” Cr Tony Briffa said. “This project, as far as I’m concerned, is the Maribyrnong bypass and that’s certainly what I refer to it as. “The impact on Millers Road, particularly nearer to Brooklyn, will be quite significant. Then there is also the health impacts.”

to local businesses exempted. Cr Jonathon Marsden said the council did not support the West Gate Tunnel toll road. “It is not a second river crossing, it is a political fix … We have recommended … the state government purchase the vacant industrial land located between Simcock Avenue and the West Gate Freeway for the purpose of conversion to public open space.” A petition has started on change.org calling for trucks to be moved to Grieve Parade instead of Millers Road as part of the West Gate Tunnel project.

’’

The council is seeking 24-hour truck bans in Blackshaws Road, Hudsons Road, Mason Street, North Road, Kororoit Creek Road east of Millers Road, and High Street. It wants a night and weekend curfew in Millers Road, between Kororoit Creek Road and Geelong Road, with trucks travelling

Stars to make a point Some people would say Larissa MacFarlane has stars in her eyes. The Footscray artist and disability activist is calling on the community to help make one million stars in a bid to take a stand against violence towards women. “Each star is a symbol of light, hope, courage and solidarity,” Ms MacFarlane said. “The star weaving groups are creative and relaxing spaces that allow us to connect, talk and heal. “The aim is to bring people together to experience the joy of making, build relationships with others and make positive memories.” The One Million Stars to End Violence Project was started in Melbourne by artist Maryann Talia Pau in 2012 as her response to the rape and murder of a young woman in her community. It has grown into an international art project that encourages people to be the

light and kindness they want to see in the world. Ms MacFarlane said there were star-weaving circles all over the world. The Footscray circle will be held at the Footscray Community Arts Centre, 45 Moreland Street, on Saturday, June 24 from 11am to 1pm. “Many of these stars are making their way to Brisbane, where they will be displayed in 2018 as part of the Commonwealth Games,” Ms MacFarlane said. Ms MacFarlane said Ms Pau hoped the one million star installation at the Commonwealth Games allowed men, women children, regardless of race, gender, culture or belief, feel like they are part of a community and world that cares. “This community also includes people with disability,” Ms MacFarlane said. Annalise said they all felt very privileged and eager to represent their home state in the championships. “We hope to do ourselves, our families and our state proud by performing to the best of our ability with other state team participants,” she said. “We hope to continue calisthenics for as long as we are able to, and then we would love to coach young members in the future, and perhaps one day, maybe even coach our own state team.” Stella Tzobanakis

The heartbeat of the hospital Williamstown Hospital has just $200,000 to go before it reaches its $2.2 million Heart of Williamstown fundraising goal for a major upgrade. Goya Dmytryshchak goes behind the scenes to meet some of the people who make the hospital tick.

numbers, we are doing far more complex surgeries now.”

Toni Powell

Toni Powell has worked in clerical roles at Williamstown for 47 years and even got married at the hospital in 1981. “I’d already worked here for 18 years at that stage … we wanted to ask quite a few of the staff but couldn’t afford to have them at the reception,” she said. “So, we had the wedding ceremony here so they could all come.” Ms Powell said she enjoys meeting people in her role at front reception. “I say I’m the director of first impressions,” she said. She said the modernisation of the hospital would be a real bonus and she hopes to see it before she retires.

“It’s very unique, it’s like a country hospital,” Ms Powell said. “The Williamstown community are very deep-rooted … so I think that’s what binds the local people to the hospital. “They have that access to emergency instead of having to go up to Footscray and Sunshine. “It’s just such a small friendly place. “I must say I do have a rapport with patients. “With patients that have been here three, four and five times, I go out and give them a hug … it just makes them feel special.”

Helena Olsen

Helena Olsen volunteers with Williamstown Hospital and its nearby opportunity shop. After retiring four years ago, she wanted to do something to give back to the community. Walking down Ferguson Street one day, she saw a “volunteers wanted” sign in the window of the op shop.

We invite you to experience and enjoy all that Club Italia has to offer through hospitality, entertainment & the very best function facilities.

“The Williamstown Hospital Opportunity Shop has been located in Ferguson Street, Williamstown, for over 22 years and is open seven days a week manned by a dedicated team of volunteers which I have been proudly part of for four years,” Ms Olsen said. All proceeds go towards the Williamstown Hospital. About two years ago Ms Olsen also started volunteering with a new program at the hospital – Volunteer Meals Assistance Program – helping elderly patients with their food and also providing them with company. “The Williamstown Hospital is a very busy place and proposed renovations will certainly make a big difference to the community, patients, family and visitors to the hospital,” Ms Olsen said. “The proceeds raised from the opportunity shop will assist with some of these renovations.”

The Williamstown Hospital nurse and theatre manager says he is happy to commute three hours a day to work at the hospital he loves. “I live in Geelong, I have an opportunity to work at six hospitals between here and my house … and I work here because I choose to, because it is such a good place to work,” he said. “It is the ultimate place to work – we have a great community spirit, we are supported by Western Health, and it does make me want to drive an hour and a half each way to get here every day.” The hospital performs elective surgeries including general, plastic surgery, urology, orthopedic, dental, maxillofacial, and ear, nose and throat. “We have a very special relationship with the dental hospital where we do some lists with them throughout the year and they’re for patients that have special needs,” Mr Buso said. He said there were always patients who left a lasting impression. “There was one in particular from a special needs list, and the mother of the patient wrote a beautiful letter to Western Health thanking us for the care we gave to that patient. “She said it was the first time that they’d felt like their son had been treated like a person. “It still makes me quite teary when I talk about it because it just reminds me how good we are at what we do and often people don’t thank you for the good work.” He said the myth that Williamstown Hospital could close was bad for everyone. “We are increasing every year in our

By Goya Dmytryshchak Late on Friday, workers who once would have been clocking off to go for a beer at the Stag’s Head up the road, gathered outside the Williamstown shipyard in a bid not to be forgotten. The former shipbuilders from BAE Systems were at a rally organised by the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) to pressure the federal government to award future contracts to Victoria.

The government last month announced its $89 billion naval shipbuilding plan, which included 5200 jobs to be created by the mid-to-late 2020s – almost all of them in South Australia. AMWU assistant national secretary Glenn Thompson said there was hope the mothballed Williamstown shipyard could be resurrected if BAE secured work as one of three tenderers for a future frigate program. “It is disappointing that a shipyard that has such a long history, an integral part of the Williamstown community, 100 years of history, has been neglected as part of the opportunity for building a viable shipbuilding industry into the future,” he said. “If BAE is successful in being the design

partner for future frigates, we would be continuing to campaign to ensure that this yard has a life in to the future.” The government is expected to make a decision early next year. Shipbuilder/boilermaker James Norcross said he worked at the yard for more than 30 years before being made redundant in September 2015. Since then, he has only found part-time work. “I’d love it if this yard started up again,” he said. “I’d be back here in a heartbeat if it started up again.” AMFU assistant state secretary Craig Kelly said Mr Norcross was not alone. “These shipbuilders are underemployed at the moment … they’ve still got the skills and the shipyard still sits there in mothballs.”

West Gate Tunnel EES community information sessions

(Joe Mastroianni)

Following the State Government’s release of their Environmental Effects Statement (EES) for the West Gate Tunnel Project, Council finalised its position on the project and will continue advocating on behalf of the Hobsons Bay community.

GAIL LINES

Fleet making waves Altona Yacht Club is crowdfunding to raise $10,000 to upgrade its training fleet for its learn-to-sail and disadvantaged youth programs. Commodore Gail Lines said the fleet was used for the club’s regular training and free learn-to-sail events, including for new arrivals to Australia and the LGBTIQ community. “Our fleet of training yachts, we’ve got about six of them, are about 20 years old so we need to think about upgrading them, replacing them, with newer ones,” she said. “I’ve just asked for $10,000, which will give us one training boat.

“On Saturdays, we have learn-to-sail training for children seven to 12 years old. “Then we have another class for the youth, then we have another class for the adults. And then on top of that, we get grants where we put disadvantaged children through.” The club is working with the Australian Sports Foundation to raise the $10,000 and all donations are tax deductible. For more information and to donate, visit asf.org.au/projects/altona-yacht-club/altonayacht-club-training-fleet-upgrade/

Council’s position outlines a number of concerns around increased local traffic, air quality, noise, loss of amenity and social and environmental impacts on Hobsons Bay. MP praises people of the west Western Suburbs MP Colleen Hartland rated giving people in the west a voice as her biggest and best achievement in the region during her 11 years in Parliament. The Greens representative, whose office is based in Seddon, highlighted the professional and personal triumph following the announcement that she and Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber would not recontest their upper house seats at the 2018 election. “I’m really proud to have given people in the west a voice,” Ms Hartland said. “The two old parties have taken the west for granted for too long, and it’s been amazing to

see what the community can achieve when they’ve got the right kind of support. “I’ve always tried to be open and accessible to everyone, and I’ve supported hundreds of individuals and community groups.

“We’ve had some great achievements together, whether it’s saving a local park from development or getting the community dental clinic rebuilt. “And of course, most recently we finally got the Labor Government to agree to rebuild the Footscray Hospital.” Ms Hartland said she will be standing down from the chamber to work behind the scenes. “Even though I’ll no longer be a voice in Parliament, I’ll still be very involved within the Greens and community campaigns,’’ she said. “I’ve been in Parliament for 11 years now, and it’s been an honour, and I’ve had an amazing time representing the western suburbs but it’s time for the next chapter in life.”

Ms Hartland said her decision was not an easy one. “Although I love my work as an MP, I’m ready for the next chapter in life.” While new candidates have not yet been flagged for the upper house seats, front runners are likely to be picked from a pool of successful Greens councillors in inner city local governments. Ms Hartland began her public life as a campaigner against toxic contamination of residential areas in Melbourne. Former national Greens leader Bob Brown said Ms Hartland would “go down in history” as a pioneer of dying-with-dignity legislation in Victoria and Australia.

MY PLACE Altona Meadows resident and local maternal and child health nurse, Debbie Vella, has seen thousands of children grow. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I have lived most of my life and raised my family in Hobsons Bay. Attended school, worked at both Williamstown and Altona hospitals. I have worked at Hobsons Bay City Council for 18 years as a maternal child health nurse. What do you like about Altona Meadows?

(Damjan Janevski)

I like all the parklands we have in Altona Meadows, being able to walk/ride around the Truganina Park, 100 Steps and coastal parklands. What would you change? For me, there is nothing that stands out to change. We have everything close at hand: shops, library, community hub and transport. We are close to the beach and can see lots of local birdlife when out walking. We have great neighbours and good links with our community. What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery? There’s several restaurants I like to visit: Sunset Thai in Pier Street would be my favourite

– friendly staff and great food. We would generally run in to people we know each time we go there. Can you tell me about the trials and joys of being a maternal child health nurse? Being a maternal and child health nurse in Hobsons Bay, I have had great job satisfaction supporting families from those early first weeks and years to seeing them head off to kinder

and school. I have been able to see second and third and more children in the family through the early years. Being in a centre co-located with the kindergarten, I have seen them grow confidently through their kinder year. I have the pleasure of seeing them in the community growing in to young adults. There are occasions when there may be concerns with the child or parent that have required addressing issues and referrals with the family. Working towards the best outcome

for the child and family is always our primary focus. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? Taking part in obstacle races may be a surprise to some. Joining a local gym, Fitness for Her at Central Square, several years ago saw me practice what I tell parents to do – make a little time and look after yourself.

HOBSONS BAY IS NOT YOUR ASHTRAY Please butt it, then bin it. With your help, we can extinguish our biggest litter problem. WHERE’S THE CHEESE? A few days ago, a friend of mine who loves experimenting with food sent me photos of his latest project. “I’m having a go at making cheddar cheese!” he excitedly told me. “That’s my curd. It will take the next five weeks to mature.” Turns out he bought himself a cheese making kit. “It comes with everything you need. You just need to buy the fresh milk.”

JOHN LAMONT HEAD COACH, WERRIBEE FOOTBALL CLUB FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? JL: Capable, but perhaps need to follow that recipe a bit more closely. FB: What is your signature dish? JL: Not so sure I would go that far and say I have a signature dish, but I would lean toward ‘slow cooking’ as a style. I do enjoy stews and casseroles in winter, warming food with a red wine perhaps. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? JL: Fresh seafood, off the boat and prepared on the pier by Rick Stein.

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? JL: The Brits is where I gravitate. I’ve always enjoyed Jamie Oliver. He just seems to have a genuine approach to the whole thing. Nigella Lawson has a great style. Rick Stein … and, apart from his language, I do like Gordon Ramsay. That brutal honesty is a good thing. Locally, Good Chef Bad Chef is also an enjoyable program, Adrian Richardson is a ripper. The thing about all the TV food programs is they have passion for what they are doing, so that is a good thing

Having watched several MasterChef contestants do it over the years, I’ve often thought about making my own ricotta cheese, by adding either vinegar or lemon juice to full cream milk, waiting for the milk to separate, and then skimming away the curds. But as you can see by the photos, my friend has raised the bar in the cheese-making stakes. The next step for him is to coat his cheese wheel in wax, before leaving it to mature. I can’t wait to see the end result. If you’re interested in making your own cheese, Cheeselinks in Lara should be your first port of call. It can help you get started on your cheese-making journey, and also has the lowdown on cheese-making workshops – whether you want to make your own creamy camembert, or are keen to try your hand at turning out feta, halloumi or blue vein cheese. Just head to www.cheeselinks.com.au

FB: What is your favourite food? JL: Roast lamb is hard to beat, chocolate (the 6th food group), and I particularly enjoy Indian food FB: What is your favourite drink? JL: Linked to time of day … fresh squeezed OJ or a banana smoothie in the morning, chocolate milkshake at lunch, red or white wine with dinner and a craft beer on a hot day. FB: Which 5 people would you most like to invite to dinner? JL: Jamie Oliver to cook and explain the food. Billy Joel to play piano and sing after dinner, with Madonna to assist. Jesus Christ to explain what really happened and who he is and Ricky Gervais to give us a few laughs.

As always, if you have any FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? tips can or other JL: Eat recipes, more fish. What we do with that tin of tuna or salmon? info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

Property of the week

WILLIAMSTOWN 13 Lakeside Place, 3016 Raine & Horne Williamstown: 9397 6167

Price: $1.2 million

The view alone makes this beautiful property worth inspecting. An unassuming facade opens to spaces evoking a mood of warmth and quality. Wide hallways, over-height ceilings and a split-level living area add to the ambiance. Designed and built by Stonehenge in 2000, this townhouse, set over two levels, begins with a soaring double-height ceiling on entry. There is a cosy carpeted sitting room to the right, dressed tastefully and with good light and french doors opening to a balcony.

3

Auction: July 8 at 12.30pm

Up a small set of carpeted steps is a study/multi-purpose space overlooking the room below. This could be a great library. Past a powder room, plenty of storage and onto the kitchen and living zone. The kitchen has granite benchtops, hardwood cabinetry, and Smeg stainless-steel appliances including a dishwasher, oven and gas cooktop. The living room has an impressive fireplace with bespoke cabinetry either side. Doors open to a balcony wide enough to fit an outdoor lounge and table. The view

is breathtaking – take in Jawbone Reserve and the ocean, the Bay Trail meanders into the distance towards Altona. Downstairs, an extra-wide hall is carpeted and has internal access to the garage. A cellar/boxroom is another welcome bonus. Two carpeted and fitted bedrooms lead to the main bathroom with double-length shower and bath. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, featuring a second double-length shower and marble-topped vanity.

2

2

French doors open to the gorgeous courtyard, where an English-inspired garden has perennials and deciduous climbers creating real ambiance. The picket fence has a gate opening to Jawbone Reserve. Take an eight-minute walk via parkland to the local shopping precinct. With alarm system, security camera, ducted heating and cooling, this is a lifestyle property, if only you venture inside to see it. Sam Freestone

DEAR heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you, this very special one (mentioned favour). Take it, the dear heart of Jesus, and place it with your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour, not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication, and your favour will be granted.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a return trip to the Vault Consider The Sauce’s senior partner spent much of last year’s AFL grand final day in and around the Vault. You’ll be unsurprised to learn I was way more concerned about where the next beer and the next goal were coming from rather than about chowing down. But I did notice that there were many happy customers enjoying a range of food – mostly, IIRC, burgers and the like. Maybe, I thought, the latest outfit to inhabit the old bank on the corner of Ballarat and Canterbury streets has shaken of the bad location karma that had seen a couple of previous businesses come and go. It took us a while, but we’re back to find out. We’re doing so early on a week night on which a couple of special offers are going around. But even without them – a burger deal with drink for $18, parmigiana for $15 – we reckon the Vault is a good thing. There’s nothing ambitious or innovative going on here. It’s a cosy (and warm) room, the staff are on the ball and we eat well for very little outlay. We’re not sure how anyone would go here with some of the more exotic fare, but for your more straightforward offerings, the Vault is reliably feeding people and making them happy. Think of it as a pub-not-pub. I check to make sure the parmas on offer – there are four – are made with real-deal

VAULT CAFE BAR RESTAURANT Address: 13 Ballarat Street, Yarraville Phone: 9041 3361 chicken. They are – and how. My traditional outing is as thick as any I’ve had – yet is still superbly juicy throughout. This is top-shelf parmigiana – big, even a little crisp around the extremities, the flavour of the ham and tomato sauce coming through in turns. The chips are fine but could’ve been hotter. And with such a magnificent star of the plate, all that was needed salad-wise was some simple leaves, tomato and cucumber. Those three are all present, but so are plenty of things – including sweet potato and eggplant – that put this salad in the try-too-hard bag. Still, at $15 this is a red-hot bargain. Bennie reckons – from an ultra-hardcore, fussy, expert perspective – his southern fried chicken burger ($16.50, $18 Monday-Thursday with a pot of beer or cider) doesn’t reach any ecstatic heights. But he is well pleased anyway. There’s a nice slab of chook in there, along with sriracha mayo slaw, plenty of pickles and cheese. He allows me a sample – and its tastes good. 51 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 21, 2017

SPORT Falcons fight back to the winners’ circle City West Falcons came back from a couple of poor performances, with not one, but two wins in the Victorian Netball League Championship division. After a shock loss the round before, the Falcons knew they needed to up the ante this week with two matches in three days. First up, the Falcons faced bottom side Ariels. Coach Marg Lind said they were keen to redeem themselves. The Falcons dominated from start to finish winning 72-35 despite missing their main goalscorer Kath Knott. Lind said with the return of Jane Cook she had taken the opportunity to rest Knott, who is recovering from a calf strain. Cook, returning from a season with the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the Super Netball Competition, shot 56 goals from 63 attempts against Ariels.

Defender Rudi Ellis also joined the Falcons for the first time this season and will add another element to the team. Lind said both players would allow them more flexibility. “Jane has learnt a lot and has improved in her time in Adelaide,” Lind said. “Rudi was a sign-on player with the Sydney Swifts. She played one game for us last year and decided she wanted to move to Victoria as she likes the pathway system. “She wanted to come to a team where she could get good defensive coaching.” Midcourter Molly Jovic was awarded the best on court votes. The Falcons didn’t have long to rest, travelling to Geelong on Friday night where they faced Geelong Cougars. It was a much tougher match-up, but the Falcons got the job done, winning 53-48 after leading at the second and third breaks.

Lind said getting the combinations right with such a tight turaround of games played a massive role in the win. “It’s always hard … on the road,” she said. “We subbed really well. Jane and Rudi played really well again. We brought Tahnysha Salanoa on for a burst later in the game and it worked really well.” The win moves the Falcons to third on the ladder, two games behind ladder leaders and reigning premiers Melbourne University Lightning. The Falcons face the Lightning this week and Lind said they will enter the game confident. “They’ve [Melbourne University] only lost one game so it will be very tough,” she said. “We have more options now with Jane and Rudi and that gives us more confidence.” Tara Murray

IN THE DOGHOUSE Sports injuries are no one’s idea of fun. The horrific injury to Mitch Wallis last year was one of the most excruciating memories of recent times. At local level, we rarely see footage but the stories are no less harrowing. One of the major differences is the financial impact a long-term injury can cause to families of players who basically play for fun, not money. West Footscray’s Darren Burnham is one of those players. He recently did major damage to his neck and spine in your normal back-into-the-pack marking situation. Suffice to say, he can’t do a lot at the moment and won’t be for some time to come. The medical bills are hitting hard. His teammates will host a fundraiser at the Roosters’ home, Shorten Reserve, on Saturday, July 15. “DB” is well known, as is the Burnham name in both footy and cricket, so I expect the usual western suburbs support for Darren and his family. Contact Steve Lane on 0432 577 294 if you can help.

■

Women’s football is an area of much conversation these days and one of the more disturbing aspects of discussion is the potential for major collision injuries. I have spoken to coaches, players, spectators and officials and all agree that it’s an accident waiting for a place to happen. Female football seems to be putting an emphasis on the finer skills of the game at the expense of important survival techniques. Being able to handball is important, but so is how to roll your shoulders to lessen force at the point of impact. Drop punts look good and are a vital part of a player’s skills, but so too is learning to protect the head. These basic skills should be taught before there are drastic consequences.

Teen stars for Big V By Lance Jenkinson Footscray wunderkind Peter Kwas was an integral cog for Victoria as it stormed to back-to-back Australian Lacrosse Association men’s national titles. The left-handed midfielder took out MVP honours and was named in the all star team after scintillating performances for the Big V in Adelaide. Footscray president Tim Lane says there are few better all-round attacking players in the country. “He’s just turned 19 and he’s probably the best player in the country at the moment,” he said. “It’s his athleticism – he’s probably six-foot-three, but he moves like a little bloke. “He has good speed and he’s a left-hander, which gives him a bit of an advantage.” Kwas’ best asset is his ability to adapt to a situation. If the defence is playing loose on him, he hurts them on the scoreboard with his lethal shot.

If the opposition is more tight checking, he turns into a provider. Kwas is near impossible to shut out of a game – rare for a player of his age and relative inexperience. “He’s a pretty unique sort of player,” Lane said. “He’s got a thin frame, but he’s strong. “Nothing fazes him on the field, so you never see him get angry or emotional – he just gets the job done. “Other teams tend to mark him pretty tightly and that’s where he steps into a role where he sets up a bit more. If you’re loose on him, he’s really dangerous and scores a lot of goals.” A big contingent of Footscray players represented Victoria over the Queen’s Birthday weekend. Joining Kwas in the men’s team that beat South Australia 10-7 in the final were Miles Blair, James Lawerson, Jeff Melsopp and Chris Plumb. The coaching staff had a Footscray flavour, too – Max Madonia was head coach and Anthony Biscardi his assistant.

52 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 21, 2017

The women’s team, which thrashed South Australia 17-4 in the final for an unprecedented fifth title in a row, featured seven Footscray players – Abbie Burgess, Verity Clough, Stella Justice-Allen, Rebecca Lane, Esther Lavelle, Nelly Mollison and Sarah Mollison. “Victorian lacrosse is going really well,” Lane said. “Footscray was heavily represented in the national tournament, which is great for us.” Footscray is also having incredible success in state leagues. The top men’s team is a perfect 9-0 following Saturday’s 16-6 win over Surrey Park at Angliss Reserve. The top women’s team is 7-0 after a hard-fought 9-6 win over Newport, also at Angliss Reserve. While Footscray is the top dog in both competitions, premierships are not won in June. “It’s not going to come easy,” Lane said. “We’re only halfway through the season. While we’re extremely pleased with where we’re at at the moment with both senior teams, there’s still plenty of work to do.”

Victorian star Peter Kwas was back playing for Footscray in state league on Saturday. (Marco De Luca)

am not the only one who is pleased that local footy does not always follow the AFL with rule changes. The deliberate out of bounds rule is driving supporters mad, but the players have adapted fairly quickly. Lachlan Hunter and Bobby Murphy told me last week at the Inside the Kennel show they now just set up for every kick being adjudicated as deliberate. Local footy has also ignored the deliberate rushed point rule, but has adapted the third man up change. Umpires at the highest level have problems with interpretation and it is no different further down the officiating totem pole. I hope we never lose sight of the fact that umpires are as important as the players.

Magic conjures up a late win after missed chances Altona Magic rode its luck en route to a 1-0 win over Sydenham Park in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 at Keilor Lodge Reserve on Saturday. It took a thunderbolt goal from Magic striker Adamson Ajayi late in the second half to break the dead-lock of a game that seemed destined to end in a scoreless draw. While both sides had their chances, it was Sydenham Park which threatened the most late on, but it had a spectacular scissor-kick goal from Matthew Sesay ruled out for offside and another powerful shot from Jayden Rojaswas adjudged to have been saved by Magic goalkeeper Michael Stark. Altona’s victory means it’s eight points clear on top of the ladder. The Magic could have one hand on the title if they can beat second-placed North Sunshine Eagles in a first-versus-second showdown at Larissa Reserve on Saturday.

Yarraville Glory rejoiced after a 3-0 win over Westgate at McIvor Reserve. Kazuki Okada, Kojo Brown and Akira Koizumi found the back of the net for the Glory, who moved five points clear of the relegation places. There was little to smile about for Altona East Phoenix on its return to Paisley Park, going down 3-0 to Banyule City. The Phoenix has not scored in its past three matches and remains two points clear on the bottom of the ladder. Altona City impressed in a 3-1 win over Cairnlea in men’s state league 2 on the road at Cairnlea Park. Captain Matthew Gray, Marcus Sherif and Lucas Wootton all scored for City. Sherif notched his 10th goal of the league campaign. Altona City, who host Essendon United on Saturday night, remains in second spot, just one point behind ladder rivals Hoppers Crossing. Williamstown’s title hopes in the men’s state

Melbourne City was no match for Brimbank Stallions, who won 7-2 at Edwards Reserve. Altona North claimed a 2-1 win over North Melbourne Athletics in a competitive men’s state league 4 game at Ron Barassi Snr Reserve. In men’s state league 5 Laverton Park had a 1-1 draw with Keilor Wolves, while Maribyrnong Greens edged out Melbourne Lions 1-0 and Maidstone United lost 3-0 to Lara United. In women’s state league 2, Yarraville Glory played out an entertaining 3-3 with Watsonia Heights at Elder Street Reserve. Maidstone United could be proud of its efforts to gain a point in a 1-1 draw with first placed South Melbourne at Henry Scott Oval. Maribyrnong Swifts scored a goal in each half through Melissa Casha and Anna Strempel to beat Yarra Jets 2-0 at Fairfield Park.

league 3 have hit a snag. The Blues went down 2-1 to Sunbury United on Saturday and have picked up just one point in three games to fall to sixth on the ladder.

Thumping win for Eagles By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville-Seddon was back to its brutal best – well, for three quarters at least – in the Western Region Football League division 2 on Saturday. The Eagles withstood an early challenge from Albanvale before powering away to a 141-point win at Robert Bruce Reserve. After leading by a point at quarter time, the Eagles incredibly out-scored the Cobras 141 to one in the remaining three quarters, restricting the Cobras to a single behind, scored in the third quarter. Eagles coach Dean Callaway had let his charges know of his displeasure with a sloppy first quarter. “I gave them a rocket at quarter time, told them some home truths,” he said. Yarraville-Seddon was expected to be a serious premiership contender this season. In a six-team competition, it is clearly the second-best team, but it remains to be seen if it can it bridge the gap to front-runner North Footscray. Some are doubting whether North Footscray can be caught – a clear slight on Yarraville-Seddon. If there were any doubts about the Eagles’ credentials, they were dispelled in the assault on Albanvale. Callaway saw his side produce arguably its best team performance of the season. “It was all team-oriented stuff from us,” he said of the final three quarters. “We played unselfish footy, our intensity and our pressure was up and we had more direction and composure.” Macauley Goring was the leader of the pack for Yarraville-Seddon, providing vital direction after the slow start. “It’s just his voice, his leadership and his hardness at the contest,” Callaway said. “He played in the middle, went forward and he brought a lot.” Lachlan Huell shone with three goals in his senior debut, while Matthew Sparks, also in first senior game for the club, and Patrick Hynes, elevated, from the reserves for his first senior game of the year, were outstanding. Yarraville-Seddon remains a game back from North Footscray, but three games and a mass of percentage clear of third-placed Manor Lakes. The Eagles will host West Footscray at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday. West Footscray notched its first win of the season over Newport Power at Shorten Reserve on Saturday. The Roosters came from eight points down at three-quarter time to storm to a 30-point win after a remarkable seven-goal-to-one last quarter. Kyle Forge and Henry Hollingworth (three goals) were stand-outs for the Roosters. North Footscray had a comfortable 94-point win over Manor Lakes at Howqua Reserve. Devils forward Jason Butty kicked 11 goals. In division 1, Altona made light work of

St Albans, winning by 65 points at Grant Reserve. The Vikings, who needed to win to keep hold of their spot in the top five, kicked 13 goals to four after quarter-time, including four to Mitch Turnbull. Spotswood was made to work most of the way by a Brian Lake-led Caroline Springs at McLean Reserve, but still came away with a 73-point win. The Woodsmen only led by 22 points at three-quarter time, but piled on nine goals to one in the last quarter.

Four Woodsmen – Stephen Syme, Mitchell McLean, Dylan Callard and James Beilby – kicked three goals apiece for Spotswood. In division 3, Braybrook produced a better showing than in its pre-Queen’s Birthday form, but still went down to North Sunshine by 15 points at Dempster Park. Parkside had to dig deep to shrug off a plucky Sunshine Heights by 24 points, while Laverton copped a 144-point hiding from Wyndham Suns at Goddard Street Reserve.

Williamstown slugs it out for a fighting win The wins keep piling up for high-flying Williamstown in the Victorian Football League. The second-placed Seagulls made it six victories on the trot when they pulled away from North Ballarat in the second half to record a 56-point win at Burbank Oval on Sunday. It could have been an even bigger margin had the Seagulls not wasted a stack of chances in front of goal, turning just 16 of 38 scoring shots into goals. They broke away from the Roosters in the third term, but could only register 5.10 for the quarter. Jack Dorgan, Lachie Schultz and Nick Meese were the standouts for Williamstown, while Arryn Siposs and Ben Cavarra kicked three goals each on a day when the side had 10 individual goalkickers. Williamstown will travel to Windy Hill to play Essendon on Saturday at the earlier midday timeslot. Meanwhile, Footscray went down to Casey Demons by 13 points at a chilly Casey Fields on Saturday night. The Bulldogs struggled to find avenues to goal with Clay Smith the only multiple goalkicker on the night with two. Nick Jamieson had the ball on a string with 29 disposals, while Lukas Webb, Tom Campbell, Matthew Boyd and Lewis Young were prominent. Footscray faces a tough test against the Werribee Tigers at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday. In the TAC Cup, Western Jets experienced the joy of victory, beating Eastern Ranges by 33 points away at the Box Hill City Oval. Zak Butters, with 20 possessions, was named best-on-ground for the Jets, while Xavier O’Halloran was a defensive menace with 12 tackles to go with 27 possessions. The firepower for the Jets was provided by Connor Thar (three goals), who had 26 disposals and 10 marks, Buku Khamis, Jake Hazik and Alex Bouris (two goals apiece). The Jets return home to Burbank Oval on Sunday morning for a date with the Dandenong Stingrays. In the women’s VFL, VU Western Spurs had a 27-point win over Geelong at Henry Turner Reserve, spearheaded by three goals to Alyssa Mifsud. Sarah Jolly, Naomi Ferres and Danni Teasdale were superb for the Spurs. Lance Jenkinson

2017 Nissan Pathfinder

N

issan reckons the Pathfinder is Australia’s forgotten SUV, even if it has managed to sell 70,000 of them to Australians in the past three decades. The big unit is arguably hiding in plain sight – there are thousands of them on the road, in garages and at dealerships – but Nissan’s contender hasn’t proven quite as popular as rivals from the likes of Toyota, Mitsubishi, Ford and Jeep. So Nissan gave its family SUV a mid-life makeover, adding new looks, more power and additional tech to the seven-seater. As before, the Pathfinder is available in three model grades – ST, ST-L and Ti. All three feature a reworked 3.5-litre V6 engine that now benefits from direct injection, helping it produce 202kW and 340Nm while using slightly less fuel than the outgoing model. The range starts at $41,990 for the base Pathfinder ST, which costs $500 more than before but adds restyled 18-inch wheels, a new digital driver display and updated 8.0-inch infotainment screen. More important changes reserved for the mid-range ST-L and top-end TI include a range of active driver aids such as autonomous emergency braking with forward collision warning, rear cross traffic alert and active cruise control systems. Priced from $53,690, the ST-L also features twin sunroofs, heated front leather seats, sat nav, blind spot monitoring and more. At the top of the range, the $62,190 Pathfinder TI adds luxuries such as 20-inch wheels, a motion-activated power tailgate, LED headlights, heated and cooled leather seats and dual rear screens. All-wheel-drive is a $3500 option in the Pathfinder ST, and $4000 in the better-equipped ST-L and TI.

B Y T H E NU M B E R S PRICE \ From $41,990 to $69,190 plus on-road costs ENGINE \ 3.5-litre petrol V6 or 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol hybrid POWER \ 202kW at 6400rpm or 188kw at 5600rpm TORQUE \ 340Nm at 4800rpm or 330Nm at 3600rpm TRANSMISSION \ CVT automatic, front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive FUEL USE \ 9.9-10.1L/100km (V6) or 8.6-8.7L/100km (hybrid) TO TEST DRIVE \ nissan.com.au

An unchanged all-wheel-drive four-cylinder hybrid engine with 188kW costs $3000 more than all-wheel-drive ST-L and TI models, or $2500 more than a standard ST as a two-wheel-drive proposition. Rather than being a car for “I”, “me” or “we”, the Pathfinder – Nissan says – is a car primarily bought for “them”, growing families who need space. They won’t be worried that the stability control system is quite grabby, that the steering kicks back excessively over corrugations and the V6 engine’s punch can easily overwhelm the front tyres of two-wheel-drive models when driven with determination. Instead, the Pathfinder’s well-sorted ride and better-than-average refinement could win the support of little ones as well as their full-grown guardians.
