Ward classic back in town

(Damjan Janevski)

Historian Leigh Goodall has brought home the last known Ward motorcycle, manufactured in Williamstown 103 years ago. The owner of Williamstown’s Garage Classics museum said many people were unaware there was a thriving motorcycle manufacturing business called Ward Cycles & Motors operating at 53 Ferguson Street from 1912-16. He chanced across the Ward bike with a JAP motor after a friend saw it in a Tasmanian collection. “I flew over to Tasmania and met the owner, the collector, who thought it would be a good idea if it came back to Williamstown to reunite with the town it was born in,” he said. “I haven’t found another one in existence, so I think this is the only one left in the world.” “It runs well,” Mr Goodall said. “They were very primitive in those days – they didn’t have a gear box, they didn’t have a clutch, they didn’t have brakes. So they were fairly dangerous to ride. They were all the rage and people put their money down and they weren’t cheap. “They were 30 pound – I mean, you’d buy a house with probably 40 pound.” Mr Goodall has been lent the motorcyle for a year to display at his museum and other sites, including Williamstown library from June 21 to July 31. Tunnel deadline fury Inner-west residents are outraged they have been given just 30 working days to respond to a 10,000-page environmental effects statement for the West Gate Tunnel project. The EES document for the project – previously known as the Western Distributor – was released on Monday. The project is a proposed five-kilometre tollway that will link the West Gate Freeway at Yarraville with CityLink at Docklands. The $5.5 billion tollway will have at least two city off-ramps, one in the west and one in the north.

The Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group says the government got the consultation period wrong. In a letter to the government, the group is calling for an extension from 30 to 90 days. “There are fears that the formal submission process and panel hearings will be beyond the expertise and resources of our community, and similarly affected communities along the corridor, or the general public,” the letter states. “We don’t trust that a government can be a partner in the project, a proponent, and simultaneously be the assessor protecting public interest of the project’s merits especially when consultations to date have been so

manifestly inadequate.” The group is also asking for community resources “to ensure they (residents) can participate in the process” and “get appropriate technical advice to represent their interests”. Maribyrnong infrastructure services director Sunil Bhalla said the council had hired specialists in areas including traffic to assist the council in responding to the document. Greens MP Colleen Hartland labelled the response timeframe “disgusting”. “This is 10,000 pages,” she said. “How can the community be expected to respond in 30 days? We had asked the government for an extension, which they have refused.

“

“There had been enough consultation about various things, but not about this, the finished product. If they were serious about community consultation they would give at least 60 days.” At a press conference in Yarraville on Monday, Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said there had been years of consultation. “No one would suggest we have hidden this project under a bushel,” Mr Donnellan said. “We have been out there for many years consulting with the community, ensuring we get it right.” The EES can be viewed at westgatetunnelproject.vic.gov.au/ees. It is open for comment until Monday, July 10.

Developer takes fight to VCAT By Goya Dmytryshchak The developer behind the plan to build the largest residential development in Spotswood history has vowed he will appeal against Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to grant a permit for the nine-storey neighbourhood activity centre. Sam Suleman is planning to build the centre at 31-69 McLister Street. It would include 346 dwellings over five to nine storeys, a supermarket, a bottle shop, medical centre and other shops and 753 carparking spaces. A special planning committee of Hobsons Bay council, comprising councillors Tony

Briffa, Michael Grech and Jonathon Marsden, last week unanimously rejected the plan. The council panel said the plan was an over-development of the site, was contrary to local and state planning policies, and would generate adverse traffic and parking impacts in the local area. “The proposed development is not appropriate for the land and is contrary to orderly and proper planning,” the council stated in its grounds for refusal. Objector Danny Crawford said the developer had submitted three applications for the site, each time increasing the number of dwellings.

“I’m definitely going to VCAT,” he said. “The bottom line is, there is demand for that product over there and that’s why it was done that way. “It certainly meets all guidelines. It got approval from council independent consultants … this certainly complies with all the regulations stipulated by the planning scheme. “We have been discussing for the last two years, to come up with a plan that suits and complies with all the regs … to have that overturned. “We have full support of council officers and we intend to go to VCAT and get it overturned – and I’m very confident we’ll win.”

“The first one was 87, the second submission was something like 240 and the third one that was rejected [last week] was 346,” he said. “It’s a complete over-development on the basis of commercial gain with little consideration of local residents. “There was massive concern about the three entrances on McLister Street, opposite a primary school. [It] was just absolutely astounding, that they actually went for a design such as that – no kind of regard for public safety in such a small street.” Mr Suleman told Star Weekly he would lodge an appeal with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT).

Suburbs face flooded future Tens of thousands of homes and businesses in Melbourne face a bigger risk of flooding by century’s end, and major roads, tram routes and industrial areas could disappear under water due to sea level rises, new modelling shows. The updated modelling of possible sea level rises caused by climate change predicts Victoria’s coastline could be hit by sea level rises of two metres or more by 2100, due to the rapid melting of ice sheets in Antarctica and Greenland. A two-metre rise would flood several low-lying suburbs in Melbourne including Williamstown, Altona, South Melbourne, Albert Park, Port Melbourne, Southbank and St Kilda. The modelling is based on research by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), which this year released updated projections for sea level rises made in the landmark 2013 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. That report said a 74-centimetre sea level rise by 2100 was a worst-case scenario. Since then, ice sheets have been found to be melting more rapidly than thought and projections have been revised so that the 74cm “worst-case scenario” is considered probable, while a rise of two metres to 2.7 metres is now a “plausible”, according to NOAA. Alan Stokes, executive director of the Australian Coastal Councils Association, said the revised modelling was a wake-up call for governments. “If the sea rises to that level it would be a national disaster,” Mr Stokes said.

It’s not easy being green By Stella Tzobanakis A small frog is causing a big stir in Maribyrnong. Maribyrnong council has removed rubbish bins from several parks in the city in a bid to protect the growling grass frog. But the move has some growling as the council made the decision to get rid of the bins from the three parks – Beavers Reserve in Wales Street, Kingsville, and Bristow and Mappin reserves in Seddon – without knowing whether the endangered frogs live there. Radio host Tom Elliott raised the issue on his 3AW talkshow. A barrage of comments from listeners followed, including criticisms that the move

was “a council cost-cutting exercise” and would encourage rubbish dumping in the parks. Inner-west resident Sue Findley was one of them. “I think I can sum it up for all park users, that to take away bins causes more pollution to the environment that would affect the ecosystem of any native animal,” she said. Maribyrnong infrastructure services director Sunil Bhalla said the move was part of a three-month “carry in, carry out” litter trial in highly urbanised areas. Mr Bhalla said that despite council not knowing whether the frogs existed in any of the three reserves, temporary bin removal was still important.

“While we are unaware of the existence of frogs in the local parks where bin removal and signage will be trialled, litter entering into gutters ends up in local waterways, Stony Creek and the Maribyrnong River, where frog censuses have identified a number of frogs including the endangered growling grass frog,” Mr Bhalla said. “Litter, especially plastic litter, changes the habitat and leaches chemicals, which impacts local fauna, and especially frogs, which are very sensitive.” The trial will end in August. The results of the trial will be made available on the Maribyrnong council website and through Sustainability The growling grass frog is central to the “carry Victoria. in, carry out” trial. Art prize is in the mail Pitjantjatjara artist Mumu Mike Williams is the first winner of the Footscray Art Prize. Williams won the $10,000 cash prize for his Postbag Painting, in which he painted on repurposed Australia Post canvas mailbags. The artist chose the mailbags – which are Commonwealth property – as his painting surface in a bold statement about ownership and the conflict between Commonwealth law and Anangu lore. Williams said he was delighted and surprised to have won, and was moved by the receptive audience he found in Melbourne. “I entered this prize as I knew that Footscray was a place that really embraced and celebrated diversity, which is important to me,” he said. “Even though all the shortlisted artworks were very diverse, there was a strong and powerful message in all of them.”

Williams grew up around Pukatja and is a traditional ngangkari healer, currently living in the Northern Territory. His work, selected from more than 800 eligible entries, will be on display at the Footscray Community Arts centre until June 24. Other winners included: Street Art Prize, Heesco for Miss Citizen of the World; Tertiary Art Prize, Mohsen Meysami for Their Pain, Our Gain; Young Artist (13-17 years), Jaina Zheng for Estranged; Young Artist (12 and under), Cathy Tran for Decorated Pot. High price for history When Elaine Sanderson moved into the Yarraville house, it was surrounded by paddocks with sheep and cows and there was a factory across the road. But the four-bedroom Edwardian house at 56 Severn Street, held by the Sanderson family for about a century, these days sits among a very different suburb, one that bustles with cafes and restaurants. The property was among 1143 auctions scheduled for last Saturday across Melbourne. Eight would-be buyers battled for the 400-square metre Yarraville property, now derelict, but brimming with memories for Ms Sanderson.

It sold for $1.19 million, $340,000 above reserve. “I didn’t think it would get to $1 million to be honest,” Ms Sanderson said. “I’m happy about it, but it’s got a lot of memories and is a bit emotional for me.” Ms Sanderson said her late husband was raised in the house from birth about 80 years ago. “When I first came here 55 years ago, there was a quarry over the road and there were not many houses around,” she said. After selling the house, she said her plan was to move to a unit in Werribee near her “very good friends”.

Driver pleads guilty to killing cyclist

Although the house has no heritage overlay and also attracted bidders interested in building a new home, the buyer is an investor who grew up next door. The buyer, who no longer lives on the street, planned to renovate the house before renting it out. Jas Stephens auctioneer Terry Fitzpatrick, who handled the sale with Nathan Gleeson, attributed the result to the location – walking distance to Yarraville village and Cruickshank Park, with Yarraville station and Yarraville West Wembley primary school also nearby.

A man could face up to 10 years in jail for fatally hitting a cyclist and fleeing the scene. Matthew O’Connor, 28, was on bail when he struck New Zealand national Peter McGuffie, 54, as he rode his bike in West Footscray on June 23, 2016. The cyclist died at the scene. The court previously heard O’Connor was seen veering into the bike lane on Barkly Street and that Mr McGuffie was wearing a high-visibility vest at the time. O’Connor appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident, driving while suspended and committing an indictable offence on bail. The crime of dangerous driving causing death carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment. Prosecutors withdrew other charges against him including culpable driving causing death and failing to render assistance after an accident, the court heard. Magistrate Simon Zebrowski remanded O’Connor to appear at the County Court for a pre-sentence hearing on September 26.

School latches on to novel idea An Altona Meadows school has opened Hobsons Bay’s smallest library. Queen of Peace Parish Primary School has joined a growing movement, installing a ‘street library’ at the front of the school. Street Library Australia was founded by Nic Lowe in Sydney in 2015. It involves installing a box of books accessible from the street in mainly residential areas or on school property. Queen of Peace grade 5 teacher Belinda Bartolo said the school hoped the library would help build connections with the community. “It promotes a love of reading for both our students and people in our community.” To find more about Street Library, visit streetlibrary.org.au Goya Dmytryshchak

Funding ruling breaks The Link By Goya Dmytryshchak

Florida recipe is a hit

An alternative education centre for at-risk kids at Laverton has been forced to close after the withdrawal of government funding. As reported by Star Weekly in October, The Link Centre was at risk of closure after the state government withdrew $300,000 funding. Its board of directors last week announced the centre’s program would be incorporated in to the Wyndham Community and Education Centre at Werribee The Link Centre, which has operated at the back of Laverton P-12 College since 2005, helps some of the most at-risk young people from Hobsons Bay and Wyndham. The students may have a history of trauma or bullying, mental health issues, drug use, criminal activity, or low educational skills. Chairman George Haggar said the board had been told by the Department of Education that funding would cease at the end of term three. “We are pleased to be working with Wyndham Community and Education Centre in a transition phase that will see their program expanded to accommodate the needs of the young people who have been part of The Link Centre’s program this year,” he said. Education Minister James Merlino said the government had launched a $16.4 million ‘Navigator’ initiative to support 12 to 17-year-olds who were disengaged from school. “We are working closely with The Link Centre management to help them transition operations, including all students, to new destinations including the Wyndham Community and Education Centre in Werribee and local schools,” he said. “Our Western Melbourne Navigator service has already helped many young people in Melbourne’s west return to education.”

A former high school drop-out is enjoying a fairytale outcome after being selected to be a cook at Walt Disney World in Florida. Amy Rooney, 20, came to the Link Centre at Laverton in 2013 after leaving Werribee Secondary College in year 8. “My anxiety and depression built up to the point I couldn’t take it and I had to come out of school,” she said. “I had pretty much a year and a half just staying home. “I was pretty messed up – I was in a pretty deep hole.” She said she went to a Link Centre meting in a bid to get herself back in to the “real world”. “The second I walked in here, I mean I was very, very nervous, but they held me pretty close and helped me through it,” she said. Next month, Ms Rooney will complete her certificate III in commercial cookery through William Angliss Institute of TAFE before heading to the US in August. She has been selected to be part of the Disney international program in quick service food and beverage at the Disney near Orlando for six months. Ms Rooney credited the Link Centre with changing her life. “This is practically like a bridge to everything that has come my way,” she said. “They’ve really been my foundation. “It’s really just a bridge back into the real world again.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Facelift for Footscray favourites By Stella Tzobanakis The iconic former Footscray Town Hall, and the Ercildoune building will both receive major refurbishment works The two historical sites in Napier Street, Footscray – almost opposite each other – will undergo improvements under the State Government Living Heritage Grants Program. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson announced $200,000 in funding for conservation works to the town hall – now the Maribyrnong council chambers – which will pay for the restoration of the grand entrance.

Almost $45,000 funding will also address urgent conservation and repair works at the Ercildoune building, including repairing vital timber joinery. Ms Thomson said the two structures have played a significant role for generations of the Footscray community. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the town hall was the only American Romanesque civic building in Victoria. Cr Cumming said when it was built in 1936 – replacing the original 1875 town hall – it was at its height of significance. “At the time, it was a powerful symbol of

the community emerging from the Great Depression and the standing of Footscray as the economic centre of the west,” Cr Cumming said. “However, like anyone who has racked up 82 years on this earth, she is starting to show her age. “The plaster ceiling under the front portico is starting to deteriorate due to water damage and there are visible cracks in the mosaics and bluestone steps due to ground settlement issues over the years.” Cr Cumming said there might be one slight drawback to the restoration works. “The only downside is that we might have to

remove the red, white and blue banners whilst the work is done. “However mark my words, they’ll be coming back as soon as possible – hopefully to mark another [Bulldogs] premiership win.” The Ercildoune building was built in 1876 for the National Bank of Australia in response to industrialisation and population growth in the area. Industry in the area included tallow making, hide treatment, meat preserving and fertiliser manufacture. The bank was relocated in 1918 and Ercildoune was used as a residential building from 1919. It was bought by current owner Footscray Historical Society in 1970.

Reno a grave endeavour A 19th century water fountain at Williamstown Cemetery was switched on last Friday after undergoing a 12-month, $450,000 restoration. Designed by Melbourne-based architectural modelers Wardrop and Scurry, the 1892 fountain is one of only three of its type erected in Victoria around the same period. It was built in honour of Agnes Fairbairn Turnbull, the wife of master mariner John Joseph White, who died on November 3, 1889 and was buried at the cemetery. The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust chief executive Jacqui Weatherill said the fountain had been decaying and leaking and was missing an upper bowl. “It is a beautiful fountain, which is in a neo-baroque fashion and it’s got garlands and cherubs and griffins and masks and baroque-style dolphins,” she said.

“The local community in the Williamstown area, who are very passionate, were very keen to see it restored to its former glory – in particular, the Friends of Williamstown Cemetery.” The fountain’s refurbishment was jointly funded by Victoria’s Heritage Restoration Fund and the Trust. “We appointed heritage fountain restoration company to come and restore the fountain, and it is painstaking work,” Ms Weatherill said. “You’re talking tiny little griffins and dolphins. It’s almost like with a toothbrush, they work their way through cleaning it and restoring it.” The fountain was switched on by Williamstown MP Wade Noonan at a ceremonial event featuring a town crier and the Williamstown High School band. This stunning Victorian has a faultless floorplan. In the main bedroom upstairs are spacious and refined spaces, with a walk-in wardrobe almost as big as the en suite with a corner spa, double-length shower, twin basin vanity, toilet and bidet. The fifth bedroom/retreat space is opposite the landing. Downstairs, the front sitting room has a restored fireplace, with period surround, and plantation shutters. Period-rich details are seen throughout, including stained glass windows, ornate cornicing, pretty gabling and pressed metal roof feature. All four bedrooms downstairs have fireplaces. Past the formal lounge room, the kitchen boasts extensive storage, granite benches and stainless-steel appliances. This Edwardian-inspired property is stunning inside and out, delivering a cleverly designed, flexible floorplan. On a quiet street with direct access to Cruickshank Park, the house has quality fixtures and detail throughout. Living spaces are aplenty, with a lounge room, dining room and family-meals zone (next to the kitchen) and a study/retreat all downstairs. Upstairs is a retreat/rumpus. The pretty white kitchen features Caesarstone benchtops and a butler’s pantry. There are four big bedrooms, two upstairs and two downstairs, all with built-in wardrobes and three with en suites (two of these with dual basin vanities). One of the upstairs bedrooms has a balcony. are both carpeted and have high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling country-chic wardrobing with custom built-in desks. Roasted black butt floorboards lead to the first of two main bedrooms, with a stunning en suite featuring the same tapware and quality finishes as the main bathroom that follows. The main bathroom is designer-savvy with Corrian benchtops, Parisi tapware, a therapeutic stone bath and twin basin vanity set against a feature wall and double-length frameless shower. Seaholme 2 Garden Grove Sensational in the 60’s, Great Scope Today! This bright, boldly designed family home hides nothing of the trials and tribulations that long term tenancy has produced. In fact, this residence is happy to reveal its readiness for renovation - or its option for development, STCA, - on an irresistible allotment between the beach and Seaholme station. Downstairs areas for entertaining, with outdoor access, are accompanied by four bedrooms, a central spa bathroom and a separate laundry/second bathroom, each original and illustrative of their era. Above, living and dining spaces opening to a substantial balcony lead to a casual meals zone and a kitchen where tangerine laminate adds to the sense of time warp style. It needs work, the garage and the north-facing garden provide further proof of this, but the rewards will be wonderful!

Like no other of it’s kind the emphasis here is on extra generous proportions and natural light. The facade cuts a stately figure and upon entrance you’ll immediately understand that this extremely well designed Town Residence has been built for those wanting all the attributes of a large home in a low maintenance package of distinction. Two, wide impressive living rooms are awash with northern light and will cater for anything from the daily family hustle and bustle to a big party crowd. Comforts include split system heating/cooling, ensuite bathroom, walk in robe, full size laundry, internal garage access and large kitchen with pantry. This fabulously located home has Langshaw Reserve nearby and is surrounded by Bayfit Leisure Centre, Altona lakes golf course and schools.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds neighbours can become good friends Anyone who lives in Melbourne’s west – particularly the inner west – knows a profound truth about our relationship with the rest of Melbourne. It is this: Unlike those who live in the eastern or northern suburbs, Melbourne’s CBD and other inner-city locales are, for us, neighbours. And that means West Melbourne is very much in play for eating adventures for Consider The Sauce and its readers. The area bounded by King Street and the railways lines, with Spencer Street in the middle, is easy to take for granted, but it is actually quite heavily residential. Those residents have a slowly growing range of cafes, and a few pubs, from which to choose. But almost all of those options are closed at night and at the weekends. Junie Moon’s, by contrast, is these days open for breakfast and lunch at the weekends. So good is the food we enjoy, you can bet we’d be there once – and maybe twice – each and every weekend if we lived hereabouts. Even better, so far as I can tell all of the lunch offerings clock in at about the $15 mark. Junie Moon’s more substantial meals are rostered through a revolving list that is updated weekly on their Facebook page, so the food discussed here is only broadly representative. The list invariably includes dishes of Asian or Middle Eastern inspiration and also house-made pasta. The fig and pig salad is a zesty, light delight. Nestling among all those spinach leaves

JUNIE MOON’S Address: 511 Spencer Street, Melbourne Phone: 8354 8426 are fresh figs, grilled peaches, goat curd and prosciutto, all doing a lovely tango with a toasted walnut dressing with good nutty flavour. It’s a notably odd thing to be served a burger without the option of fries – but it’s no problem as we simply accept that Junie Moon’s is not a deep-fryin’ kind of place. And certainly Bennie has no complaints at all about his smokey braised brisket burger with cheese and citrus mayo ($16.50). He rates the plentiful, juicy, tender meat very highly. The house-made gnocchi with chicken and mushrooms in a garden tarragon, wine and cream sauce ($16) is very rich, but it is divinely tangy and ripe with tarragon flavour. We enjoy excellent coffees and half each of a wonderful gluten-free chocolate brownie ($4). Finally, every bit as good as anything we’ve eaten is the pot of superb raspberry, vanilla and orange jam we take home. It’s brilliant.

SPORT Altona fails to fire after crushing start Altona Gators arrived too late to the party in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 on Sunday. The Gators were blown out of the water in the first half by the Camberwell Dragons at Balwyn High School and wound up losing 85-72 in a fairly one-sided game. It was a spirited Gators performance in the second half, but its only value came in adding some respectability to the final score. The ugly first two periods, when they were out-scored 50-29, consigned the Gators to inevitable defeat. Justin Eckhardt and Jeremy Edwards could hold their heads up high for Altona. Eckhardt led the Gators with 23 points, while Edwards contributed 16. Altona’s passing game was non-existent. They recorded 22 turnovers and only five assists – not the assist-to-turnover ratio that will win too many games. At 5-7, Altona is still not out of the finals hunt, but it will need to get a wriggle on,

starting with Sunday’s game against Mildura Heat at the Altona Sports Centre. In women’s division 2, Altona Gators remain anchored to the bottom of the ladder without a win. The Gators were shown no mercy by the undefeated Warrnambool Mermaids, losing 102-46 at The Arc Sports Stadium on Saturday night. Jordan Bridge was the shining light for the Gators with 11 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. She was extremely efficient with her shooting, going four-from-five from the field and two-from-two from beyond the arc. Eden Donoghue and Cassie Favero scored nine points apiece for the Gators. Altona will have two weeks to re-group before three consecutive home games, starting with Collingwood All Stars on June 18. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ No wonder footy fans are a confused lot. AFL fans of six clubs (including the Bulldogs) get this weekend off for the bye, while VFL fans had last weekend off for the state game and suburban footy fans can look forward to a weekend off over the coming Queen’s Birthday weekend. Players missing games in local footy due to weddings seems to be at an all-time high, and the overseas summer holiday exodus is about to kick in. In a way it is good to see life still takes precedence over what is, after all, a game. ■ Local

Altona Gators coach Des Radoslovic. (Shawn Smits)

football has become more professional in recent years. I have seen first-hand a massive change in the way clubs handle the media. A decade ago, getting a team sheet on match day was almost impossible, and then it was a work of fiction. There is still a small percentage of clubs who live in the dark ages and think we are there with them. There are no secrets any more in footy. Social media has seen to that. Team changes, injuries and player movement between clubs is all on Twitter and Facebook before it appears on any official news source. Why some clubs persist in playing mind games amazes me. Promote your club and your players. That is your obligation as officers of the club.

■ Some big decisions coming up for local cricket with Cricket Victoria unveiling its new geographical plan for cricket, with five metro zones. The Subbies have not embraced the proposal, with the threat of going solo. The bottom line is making participation easier and less stressful for everyone. Cricket is a time-consuming game, and spectators have embraced the shorter version of the game at the elite level. Sometimes tradition has to make way for the needs of the next generation.

(Damian Visentini)

City’s season on a roll By Lance Jenkinson Altona City thrived as hunters in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2, but now it is their turn with a target on their back. Having risen to the top of the ladder, City is no longer being taken lightly, with all clubs wanting to knock the top side off their perch. City saw just how tough life can be at the top against Westvale away at McKechnie Reserve on Saturday. Sure, City came away with a 2-0 win, but it was a struggle for supremacy most of the way. “It was a hard game today,” City president Joe Tanti said. “The boys really had to put in to get the win.” In the first 45 minutes, Altona City had not produced the kind of play that saw them move into first place. City coach Andy O’Dell told his team in no uncertain terms what he thought of the performance to that point in the game. “Andy gave them a stern talking to at half-time,” Tanti said. “A few of our boys 44 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 31, 2017

weren’t happy with the way they were playing anyway.” Altona City came out after the break and changed the momentum of the game with two goals in 10 minutes. It would come as no shock that Marcus Sherif was on hand to finish off some nice City moves for a double. Sherif has scored eight goals in nine league appearances, including four in the past three games. “He’s an absolute star,” Tanti said. “I love that he was an Altona City junior, it makes it more enjoyable for me to see him putting goals away.” It was the energy of Altona City captain Matthew Gray that changed the complexion of the game. Gray was angry with his team’s performance at half-time and took his frustrations out on Westvale in the second half. “He was like a man possessed in the second half,” Tanti said. “He came out of the rooms first before anyone and was raring to go.

“As soon as he got the ball, he created two or three chances and Marcus put two of them away.” Altona City’s success has been built on its defence. The tight back of James Neighbour, Hayden Beasley and Kieren Farrugia kept a clean sheet for a fourth time in five games. Altona City remains two points clear on top of the ladder ahead of Saturday night’s showdown with Hume United at Kim Reserve. In state league 1, Altona Magic’s grip over top spot weakened considerably after drawing 1-1 with Keilor Park. The Magic’s lead at the top has been slashed to three points after it blew out to six only three weeks ago. Yarraville Glory celebrated a 2-0 win over Altona East Phoenix, courtesy of goals to Reuben Agyei Danso and Keith Burch. The Glory moved up to 10th, leap-frogging the Phoenix in the standings. Bosin Gorcevski scored the match-winner for Williamstown, who climbed up to second in state league 3 after pipping Melbourne City 1-0 at Edwards Reserve.

■ James Condos has turned back the clock this season in front of goals for Deer Park. In recent years Jimmy has been helping with coaching as his body just would not let him play to the standard he demanded. This season he has 33 goals from seven games and is well on track to have the Andrew Gibson Medal at season’s end. James won the WRFL Rookie award when he was a teenager playing for Parkside. He was drafted by the Bulldogs but injury curtailed his ambitions. His father Nick is coaching Parkside where another big name – Jason Cloke – is heading the division three goalkicking with 37 goals.

SPORT

University puts an end to Spurs’ early run VU Western Spurs played exciting, free flowing and attacking football in the opening two rounds of the Women’s VFL season for two wins from two starts. The Spurs averaged 72.5 points per game across rounds one and two, yielding two superb away wins and high anticipation for their home opener at Henry Turner Memorial Reserve against Melbourne University on Saturday. Unfortunately for Spurs fans, the balloon got pricked by University. Once you are at the mercy of University, you get your attacking verve strangled out of you.

University improved to 3-0 and it all had to do with their defensive tactics. They are conceding a measly 31 points on average and held the Spurs to just 18 in another suffocating defensive performance. Because University is so good defensively, they don’t need to be the most potent in attack, and their score of 35 on Saturday was enough for a comfortable 17-point win. It was obviously a disappointing outcome for VU Western Spurs, but they visit bottom-ofthe-ladder Seaford on Saturday with a flawless away record.

Aliesha Newman and Ashleigh Gunn were the Spurs only goalkickers on a tough day, while Sarah Jolly, Naomi Ferres and Angelica Gogos were named best for the home side. The Spurs are fourth on the ladder and retained the sky-high percentage they accumulated in the first two rounds. CYs homecoming

Spotswood falls from top

By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown CYMS will make its long-awaited return to Fearon Reserve when it entertains Old Mentonians in Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C on Saturday. The CYs have spent the first seven rounds on the road, playing games at makeshift home bases Altona Green Park and Burbank Oval, while their Osborne Street ground was being re-surfaced. The homecoming will be sweet, but the CYs results during their travels have been impressive. They are nicely positioned in third place with a 4-3 record after last Saturday’s come-from-behind win over Kew by 33 points at Victoria Park. But CYs coach Matthew Montebello would not swap any other venue for the home ground affectionately known as “the Fearon”. “We’re looking forward to getting back on the Fearon and stamping our authority on our home ground,” he said. “It’s amazing how many people we get at our games there. “The support we get from our community is fantastic. We want to see a huge crowd.” Three years into life as a Premier C club, the CYs have done their apprenticeship with respectable finishes in the past two seasons, but now is the time for them to take the next step. “We’re looking to, at a minimum, play finals,” Montebello said. “We want to be a team that other teams identify as a finals contender. “To do that, you’ve got to win a lot more than the seven games we did last year.” An encouraging sign was the numbers on the track during the pre-season, with upwards of 50 players slogging it out at each session. “It was our best pre-season since we’ve been in Premier C,” Montebello said. “We’ve pretty much had 45 to 50 blokes at training every single training session, so we seem to have everyone on board, all pushing for the same thing.” Kallan Dawson has been a revelation for Williamstown CYMS this season.

Ben Gray has enjoyed a strong start to the season for Williamstown CYMS. (Damjan Janevski)

Still a teenager, Dawson has shown maturity beyond his years by playing a major role in CYs’ early success. “He’s an 18-year-old kid with two years of under-19s still to play,” Montebello said. “A good six-foot-three running half-back, he’s a phenomenal talent and it’s really exciting coaching him.” Nick Blackney has thrived as an under-sized ruckman. He was third on the big man depth chart last year, but has stepped up

since the retirement of Steven Puhar and the unavailability of Tom Gill. “He’s playing his heart out,” Montebello said. Jack Connolly has been described as “maestro” of the backline, while the attack has been spearheaded by the Grays – Jack (18 goals) and Ben (17). It promises to be a tantalising return clash at the Fearon on Saturday between the sides ranked third and fourth in the competition.

Spotswood was knocked off top spot after a disappointing 43-point home loss to Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1 at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Woodsmen had averaged a massive 156 points per game over the previous three rounds, but they were restricted to just 43 on 13 scoring shots by a Hoppers side that was desperate to turn its own form around and show that it will be a challenger. Things are looking brighter all of a sudden for Altona. The Vikings made it back-to-back wins in an 84-point belting of Wyndhamvale at Grant Reserve on Saturday. Brett Shiels (five goals), Omar Abou-Zeid (four) and Josh Rafferty (three) feasted on the back of the Vikings plentiful attack. But Altona’s big test will come on Saturday when it faces in-form Sunshine Kangaroos at Kinder Smith Reserve. In division 2, North Footscray powered to a 110-point win over West Footscray at Shorten Reserve. Adam Petridis was named best for the victorious Devils, while Tyren Montebruno snagged five goals to make it 17 in four games. Yarraville-Seddon was convincing 64-point winners over Newport Power at the Yarraville Oval. Brayden Smith played a starring role for the Eagles, while Jack Hargreaves booted four goals for the second week running. In division 3, Parkside enjoyed a 71-point win over Braybrook at Pennell Reserve, on a day when Chris Muratore led the charge. Laverton endured a hellish day, losing by 116 points to Sunshine Heights at Ainsworth Reserve. Lance Jenkinson
