Dinjerra Primary council members Rayna Fahey and Hina Hussian are among those fighting for funding for the Braybrook school. (Damjan Janevski)
School kids ‘left behind’ A Braybrook school is fighting to reverse a state government decision to not allocate an anticipated $7 million in redevelopment funding. The school community of Dinjerra Primary on South Road has started an online petition to lobby Education Minister James Merlino to reconsider funding for the school in its 2017-18 budget. School council chair Magz Tunui said the news was “a huge blow” to the school – the only
one to service the Braybrook, Tottenham and Maidstone communities. “We’re really upset about it,” Ms Tunui said. “The other state primary schools in this area are extremely overcrowded. “We have the space to accommodate a rising local population, yet we don’t have the buildings required to deliver a modern education … this is drastically limiting our ability to meet the needs of our community. “Dinjerra faces significant challenges due to the diverse make-up of our school population. Our students overwhelmingly come from poor
socioeconomic households and English levels are far below the state average. “To put it bluntly, our kids already start on the back foot … this latest announcement means that our students are being left behind by this government.” Ms Tunui said two buildings on site were built in the 1960s and were designed to last 20 years. These buildings need to be demolished and replaced. The school received state funding last year to plan the works. “With no indication of certainty as to if and when the funding will come through, this is
a devastating blow to our school,” Ms Tunui said. The work on the redevelopment was due to start later this year and be finished by the end of next year. The rebuild would lift student capacity to a total of 450. In response, Mr Merlino acknowledged that Dinjerra required funding, but did not make any funding commitments to the school. “Over 1000 building projects are being rolled out across the state and we will continue to upgrade as many schools as possible,” Mr Merlino said.

NEWS
By Clay Lucas/The Age A plan to fast-track housing on badly contaminated Defence Force land in Maribyrnong, announced by treasurer Scott Morrison in the federal budget, would cram in twice as many homes as had been originally envisaged for the site. The treasurer’s plan has stoked fears within the Andrews government that the Defence Department would simply sell the land to the highest bidder without proper strategies for transport, education or other services. For more than a decade, Defence has been working with the state government on ways to redevelop its Maribyrnong Defence Site, 127 hectares of contaminated land on the Maribyrnong River. Defence has said that the sprawling site – fronting the Maribyrnong River on three sides and Cordite Avenue to the south – was suitable for 3000 homes. But in this month’s budget, the government said the site would accommodate 6000 dwellings. If infrastructure such as parks and schools were included, this would mean high-rise development in a largely low-rise area. Canberra appears to have abruptly dumped the Victorian government in its planning for the site, with Defence set to go it alone in selling the land to the private sector. It had previously agreed to sell some of the land to the Victorian government. A federal government fact sheet released on budget night said the Defence Department would conduct a “market testing later in 2017
to invite potential options for sale, remediation and future development”. In late 2015, Defence began decontamination on one corner of the site, telling locals it was the first step in the development. Major Projects Minister Jacinta Allan said the state government supported development of the site, but warned Canberra needed to work with the state to make sure proper services were built, along with housing. It could not, Ms Allan warned, be a “free for all, where the interests of developers are put ahead of first home buyers, access to affordable housing and the interests of the community”. Planners were dismissive of the announcement because of the extent of contamination across the site, and because of many previous pledges for the site. Clean-up costs have been estimated at $300 million. Melbourne University urban geographer Kate Shaw, said the government’s plan to release the Maribyrnong land for housing had been discussed for years and was “nothing spectacular”. Maribyrnong council mayor Catherine Cumming welcomed the housing proposal, but said any development had to be properly planned. “There is substantial infrastructure needed to support the community,” she said, including new parks, community centres, sports facilities and public transport.” The council wants Defence to give it the land along the river’s edge to allow for bike and walking paths that would complete a missing link along the Maribyrnong.

Council firm on fine A Footscray woman is disappointed the Maribyrnong council did not withdraw a parking fine given as she was donating goods to charity while heavily pregnant. Philippa Chandler (pictured) said she parked in a loading zone out the front of the op shop Savers in Footscray to drop off a printer when she received the $155 fine. Ms Chandler said she appealed the fine on the grounds she was 27-weeks pregnant and did not have anywhere else close by to park in Albert Street to carry and donate the printer. “I know that it was unlawful to park in a loading zone but all the nearby spots were taken and I really couldn’t walk over to, and park in, the [multi-level] carpark across the road,” Ms Chandler said.
“I was heavily pregnant. I was genuinely unloading. I was in the bay for less than 15 minutes. And I was doing a charitable act. I’m really disappointed the fine wasn’t waived.” As part of her appeal, Ms Chandler supplied a letter from Savers confirming the donation, as well as a pregnancy scan. Acting planning services director Katy McMahon said the council would consider withdrawing a fine if there was a medical issue forcing the person to park in a loading zone. “The fact that Ms Chandler is pregnant does not fall into this category. A review of the notice has been conducted and found to have been issued correctly,” Ms McMahon said. Stella Tzobanakis FREE COURTESY BUS NOW RUNNING: Tuesday & Thursday to Sunday

Rotary marks 80th birthday
By Goya Dmytryshchak
An organisation built on the tradition of making Footscray great and helping people in need is turning 80. The Rotary Club of Footscray is celebrating its 80th year with a dinner dance and art auction on May 26. Rotary spokesperson and past-president Maria Silber said the strength of the organisation was in its grassroots and global focus. “All Rotary clubs have the aim of encouraging and fostering the ideals of service,” Ms Silber said. “Australia – from 1929 to 1932 – had a severe depression. “Times were extremely difficult for many people and improvement for conditions were very slow. “The Rotary Club of Footscray was formed to help people in need, as well as to improve the status of Footscray.” Ms Silber said there had been some major highlights since its establishment including helping build schools in Papua New Guinea and Samoa, introducing a literacy program in Bangladesh and this year, sending a container-load of medical equipment to Sudan. The Rotary Club of Footscray’s 80th anniversary dinner and art auction will be held at Croatian House, Footscray on May 26 at 7pm. Pre-dinner drinks and Footscray Art Prize finalist exhibition at Footscray Community Arts Centre, 5.30-6.30pm. Bookings: footscrayrotary80.eventbrite.com.au

An iconic Williamstown restaurant setting is available for 21-year lease in what has been advertised as a “once in a generation opportunity”. Hobsons Bay council is inviting expressions of interest to lease the Williamstown Dressing Pavilion and The Rotunda on the Esplanade. The pavilion is currently occupied by Shelly’s Beach Pavilion restaurant, whose lease expires at the end of November. The lease will also expire on The Rotunda, which operates as the Rotunda In Williamstown licensed kiosk. Shelly’s took over two years ago after the long-established Sirens restaurant went in to liquidation to repay a tax debt and unpaid creditors and workers. Comac property management company is managing the expressions of interest campaign, which closes Tuesday, May 23. Managing director Michael Haddrick said the council had deliberately not advertised a rental as money was not the deciding factor. “That’s not the key determinator here,” he said. “The key is securing the future of those buildings and also a fit-out and an operator that’s going to be secure and around for the long journey and can really do right by those buildings.” He said the long lease was an “incredible opportunity” for any potential operators to secure a long tenure in an iconic location. “Now, the reason that council is prepared to offer that 21-year lease is because they want to secure the long-term future of those buildings because any tenants need to invest some fairly decent capital to get those building up to scratch from a repair point of view

Music to their ears Seeing live music is a rite of passage for most young people and a new program will make this a reality for those with special needs in the city of Maribyrnong. Bandmates Victoria is an initiative between Arts Access Victoria and Maribyrnong council. It matches young people with a disability and/ or mental issues with a volunteer to see live music. Alejandra Diaz, of Maidstone, has nominated herself as a Bandmates volunteer. The graphic, visual, conceptual and installation artist said she found the program a great platform for inclusiveness. “As an artist, I have an affinity to music and understand that sound can put you in another landscape of joy,” Ms Diaz said.
“Two years ago I took a friend suffering from multiple sclerosis to a club; she stayed for hours dancing even though she knew the pain she would have.” Victoria Cini, 43 of Sunshine is a music lover who has been matched with Ms Diaz as “bandmates”. Ms Cini, who is in a band called The Hackkets, said the program will fulfil a dream. “I want to see The Darkness because they are one of my favourite bands. I’d like to see them at least once because they’re on my bucket-list.” Anyone interested in being a part of the program can apply online at maribyrnong.vic. gov.au/bandmatesvic Stella Tzobanakis

RSL livid as memorabilia AWOL By Goya Dmytryshchak RSL members have expressed ‘disgust’ that memorabilia from the closed Williamstown club has gone ‘missing’. Photos and other mementos promised for the Writing the War WWI exhibition, which opened at Williamstown library earlier this month, have not turned up. The items were at the Williamstown club before it was placed in to administration in March. RSL sub-branch member Geoff Hughes said the administrators, Rodgers Reidy, had not
been forthcoming about why the memorabilia hadn’t been handed over. He said this had caused community angst about the sub-branch being able to keep the memorabilia long term. “A lot of the stuff was given to us by residents. As far as we’re concerned we were safekeeping it on behalf of them so the stuff should come back into the Hobsons Bay community as property of the RSL,” he said. “I’m disgusted. It’s been two to three months since we started this process and they [the administrators] have been ‘umming’ and

‘ahhing’ and dodging around. We can’t get access to the building any more.” Hobsons Bay councillor Peter Hemphill raised the issue at last week’s council meeting and requested the chief executive officer urgently intervene by writing to the administrators.
Cr Hemphill told Star Weekly there was great concern in the community about being able to retain the memorabilia. “Prior approval [for the exhibition] had been agreed and then the administrator’s come in, put the locks on the door and then has taken out the memorabilia,” he said. “The administrator needs to come clean on what the long term intention of this local collection will be. “Will it be sold off?” Administrator Brent Morgan, of Rodgers Reidy, did not respond to requests for comment.
Coffee fix for fungi fans Aspiring fungi fans will learn how to grow their own mushrooms using coffee grounds at a Seddon cafe next month. Participants will learn how to recycle waste coffee grounds grow fabulous fungi and also enjoy a meal prepared using mushrooms grown by the cafe’s staff. The session, at Fig & Walnut, will also include presentations on mushroom-related topics such as the life-cycle of mushrooms and how mushrooms are used for food around the world. The cafe is committed to sustainable practices and waste minimisation. Any excess food is composted on site and coffee grounds are used to grow mushrooms. The fungi wisdom will be provided by MushiMushi, a Premier’s Design Award finalist for its world-first zero waste mushroom kit, which rescues resources from going into landfill and uses them to produce chemical-free
food. After the kit produces mushrooms, the entire kit content, including the growing medium and packaging, can be composted. Fig & Walnut Cafe is at 11-13 Bellairs Avenue, Seddon. The mushroom workshop will be held on Thursday, June 22, from 6.15-8.30pm. The workshop is free; pay for mushroom kit and/or meal when booking. Bookings: tinyurl.com/n66xmv7 Stella Tzobanakis

School site tipped for housing By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans are afoot for a former Altona North school site to be redeveloped in to 127 townhouses up to three storeys high. The state government’s planning authority, Development Victoria (DV), has revealed plans to develop the 2.4-hectare Altona Gate Primary School site, bound by Blackshaws Road and Misten, Rosala and Glade avenues. A master plan is scheduled to be lodged in June, with DV to apply to Hobsons Bay council for a planning permit later this year.
The DV website stated the planned townhouse development would be designed to allow “three generations to live in one home”. “According to Victoria in Future 2016, the population of Hobsons Bay is expected to rise from 94,434 in 2017 to 109,442 in 2031,” it stated. “The area will need approximately 476 new homes each year [based on an average size of 2.1 people per home] to keep up with this growth.” Each property will have two to four bedrooms and off-street parking would be provided. The Department of Education and Training
has said it will keep the site of the former Eastona Park Primary School in Collins Avenue, Altona North, allowing for it to be reconsidered if the population grows. A community information session about the development will be held at Walker Close Community Centre, 180 Millers Road, Altona North, from 10.30am-noon on Saturday, May 20. There are plans for the former Altona school site to be redeveloped in to townhouses. (Supplied)
Big gig delights dancer Dance has always been a part of life for Christian Francisco – and at just 15 years old, he’s already on the big stage. The Caroline Chisholm Catholic College year 10 student is performing as a lead dancer in Opera Australia’s production of Carmen, beating dozens of other dance students from across the state for the role. It’s an achievement that has been years in the making. “I started dancing in 2010 when I was eight,” he said. “My cousins danced, so it was in the family … I tried it out and had a bit of a knack for it. I mainly do hip-hop and break-dancing. When the chance to audition for Carmen came around, it meant a lot to be invited along. “I haven’t had an opportunity like this before so it was pretty special.” Christian attends K-Star Studios in Ravenhall and is studying VET music.
Christian is one of four Melbourne-based lead dancers for the opera, which is on at the Arts Centre. “There’s been some long rehearsals to get ready for it, but it’s all worth it,” he said. “Everyone in the room is a professional. You get to work closely with the director and new choreographers, so it’s all really interesting. “I have 10 performances … hopefully this is the start of travelling around the world with my dancing, maybe teaching and inspiring other people.” Carmen is on at the Arts Centre until May 26. A show of conflict Phuong Ngo is exhibiting artwork based on his Vietnam archive of more than 20,000 items at The Substation in Newport. Conflicted: Works from the Vietnam Archive project comprises large-scale installations and items from his archive of slides, photos, film reels, documents, maps and objects relating to the Vietnam War. His collection started in 2010 when Mr Ngo stumbled across a group of slides from the US on eBay. He bought the lot out of curiosity and his archive ballooned from there. Mr Ngo said his archive was driven by a quest to find out more about his identity and that of the wider Vietnamese diaspora since the fall of Saigon in 1975. With the rise of Pol Pot and the ethnic

Car refund bid breaks down By Goya Dmytryshchak A man has lost his bid to get a refund on a used vehicle that broke down the day after he bought it at auction in Altona North. Huseyin Mindemir bought a 2006 Volkswagen van for $7100 at an auction conducted by Manheim Pty Ltd in January this year. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) heard Mr Mindemir picked up the van the following day, but soon
after driving off the vehicle started “bubbling”. A mechanic’s report indicated the van needed a new transmission that would cost $5500. VCAT member Reynah Tang said limited warranties against defects provided by car traders did not apply to vehicles sold at public auctions. He said there were also exclusions for cars more than 10 years old or that had been driven for a distance of 160,000 kilometres or more.
‘‘
There was no evidence that Manheim was aware of - Reynah Tang the defects
’’
He said vehicles sold at public auctions were excluded from the normal cooling off period. The tribunal heard Manheim had given the van a “U vehicle grade”, which meant it had not had a mechanical inspection. “Having regard to the evidence presented,
I find that Manheim did not engage in misleading or deceptive conduct,” Mr Tang said. “There was no evidence that Manheim was aware of the defects with the van. “There was evidence that Manheim had taken steps to alert potential buyers to the fact that they had not undertaken their own inspection of the van.” He said Manheim was selling the van as an agent and had not been made aware of any defects.
It’s all fun and games Now in its third year, the Altona Beach Film Festival is seeking filmmakers game enough to enter. This year’s theme is “games” and filmmakers are being urged to use their artistic interpretation, says festival president Annette Stephens. “Games can be mind games people play, board games, the game of life,” she said. Last year’s winner was Altona Meadows’ filmmaker Aaron Lester Ellis with his film about schoolyard bullying titled Spill. “Last year was fantastic,” Ms Stephens said. “We had 37 entries ranging from seven years of age to 70 years of age. “The creativity of the entrants was amazing: there was animation, there was clay modelling, there were serious films, there was comedy, there were documentaries. “The film can be no longer than seven minutes long, including credits and title.” The judging panel comprises professional
filmmakers. Awards will be presented in age categories of under 13, under 21 and open age. There will also be a people’s choice award. Prize money and awards will be presented at a film screening on August 19. Entries close Friday, June 30. Details: altonabeachfilmfestival.com.au Goya Dmytryshchak

MY PLACE Williamstown’s Tiffany Gilmour hosts the Wriggle and Read library session at Newport. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.
My Scottish hubby and I moved here 10 years ago when he wanted to live near an Aussie beach and we fell in love with Williamstown. We’re both lucky to work in Hobsons Bay. I work part time in the Children and Youth Team at Hobsons Bay Libraries and am the part-time administrator for Williamstown Church of Christ. Our beautiful kids go to school and kinder locally. What do you like about Williamstown? I like that it’s a true and caring community. I’m proud of Williamstown’s significant history. I love the parks, the beach and the library! I love that my family and I can walk around Williamstown to do everything we need rather than relying on a car. What would you change? A bit more respect for the magic of Williamstown and bit less overdevelopment. What’s your favourite cafe/eatery and why?
I’m coeliac so I love Novel Kitchen for its gluten-free food. Can you tell me about your role with Wriggle and Read and how do you remember everyone’s name? I’m the presenter at Wriggle and Read at Newport library at 10.30am on Mondays. It’s an active literacy program for toddlers and their carers, which introduces pre-literacy skills. We sing, read stories, play with things like shakers and puppets and generally do a crazy amount of jumping around. It’s fantastic fun. It’s all about encouraging a love of learning and libraries early on in life. I wish I could remember everyone’s names! I do the best I can, but we have over 100 people most weeks. We have our regular attendees who I get to know and love watching them grow and develop in confidence over the years. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? I studied languages and performed in Indonesian and Auslan (Australian Sign Language) in Indonesia.

When Markus Zusak was writing The Book Thief, he had no idea it would sell more than Thief 10 million copies and spend more than 500 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. He will host the “Beyond the Bestseller” session with record-breaking children’s author Andy Griffiths at next month’s Williamstown Literary Festival. Held on the weekend of June 17 and 18, the Willy Lit Fest, as it is affectionately known, will involve 50 events at the Williamstown town hall and Williamstown library. Zusak said he thought The Book Thief would be his least successful title because of its dark subject matter. “Well, it’s set in Nazi Germany, it’s narrated by Death, nearly everyone dies – oh, and it’s 580 pages long, you’ll love it,” he said. “I honestly thought no one would read it – so yes, its success surprises me to this day.” He said the book had enabled him to buy a new car – nine years after the book came out in 2005. “The success definitely didn’t make me feel more confident about my writing – those things never change,” Zusak said. Griffiths, who wrote Australia’s bestselling book of 2015, The 65-Storey Treehouse, said that when he wrote the first book in the Treehouse series, he knew he was on to something. “The 13-Storey Treehouse was the seventh book in a series of experimental and absurd books that Terry Denton and I had been creating over a decade,” he said. “We were just like two mad scientists adding a bit of this and a bit of that just to see what would happen. “We knew we’d created something unique – and with an interesting mix of both gentle and

There are many unofficial precincts of Williamstown but one of the most lovely is the pocket off Victoria Street, a gentle walk to Williamstown beach. It is the old Williamstown with its croquet lawns, bowling club, the beach (of course), parkland and a local milkbar. Surrounded by old grand homes and new builds too, this property boasts an understated facade. The crowning glory of this house is the open-plan kitchen meals-living space which opens out to the wrap-around backyard. It has double-height ceilings and all the space you’ll need in a layout that is intuitive and a gentle updating is all that’s required to take it to the next level. Three bedrooms all have built-in-robes and the main bedroom opens to the courtyard and has a walk-in robe and en suite. This could be your masterpiece, waiting to happen.
Renovations to this house extended the living spaces and flooded this picture-bookEdwardian with light and space to further enhance this hands-down great investment. It has two bathrooms, two living rooms and a great blend of the contemporary and the traditional. The two original bedrooms are Edwardian-large with built-in robes, the third bedroom part of the renovation. The renovation also included a contemporary kitchen with loads of drawer storage and stainless-steel appliances. The backyard has the value-add option of opening up the vehicle access via the right of way. A wall of glass doors means the contemporary deck can be enjoyed year-round. Close to cafes and a two-minute drive to the centre of Yarraville life, this property is worth a look.

SOUTH KINGSVILLE 14 Vernon Street, 3015 Jas Stephens Real Estate: 9316 9000
Price: $950,000 – $1.045 million
The triple-gabled facade, light-coloured brick work, large windows and Hills Hoist out the back all represent another time in Australian suburban history. Opportunities abound in this great-size corner block in a prime South Kinsgville location. Or you can preserve and celebrate this fascinating time capsule. The house sits on about 714 square metres opposite the Vernon Street shopping precinct, in a pocket of the inner-west that has a true community atmosphere.
Auction: May 20 at noon
Famed eateries such as Motorino, Black Sheep Cafe and new arrival Burn City, along with a plethora of other small businesses, are moments away. The community vibe for those who live in the neighbourhood is fantastic. Edwards Reserve is a three-minute stroll away, and proximity to the city, Williamstown, Yarraville and Spotswood is stunning. This property is a time warp that has been owned from new by the same family. Enter to a wide carpeted hall with a small chandelier.
The main bedroom, with retro-style built-in wardrobe with centre dresser speaks of another age, with large twin windows looking out to the front yard. Double doors in need of repair lead to the living room with gas fire and servery. There are two more bedrooms and a central bathroom that leads to the laundry. The kitchen, with room for a dining table, looks reminiscent of The Brady Bunch with floral wallpaper, curved cabinetry and lazy susan corner storage. It’s kitschy and quaint.

Windows set into the third gable look out to the front yard. An internal door leads to a lean-to style sunroom with mock wood panelling where a back door leads to the backyard, which is of a good size, although the true depth of the block is hidden by overgrown tropical-style shrubbery. This one could make room for new streetscapes – or its classic style could find new admirers. Sam Freestone 19 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 17, 2017

45 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 17, 2017
FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds the most social spot in town . . . Sunshine Social is a hit and hoot, and we love it to bits. This is the biggest thing to hit Sunshine West for years – the adjacent Glengala Road shops barely seem to have changed for the best part of a decade. The old servo has been done up a treat, the swish fit-out preserving the old-time feel of the building and, best of all, the wonderful roof that once sheltered filling-up motorists from the elements. Loosely based on the concept of old-school charcoal chicken shops, Sunshine Social goes from there to offer a menu that broadens out to take in some multicultural ideas, all the while offering a cohesive game plan. Marinated olives and chargrilled vegetables ($7.50) are a delightful way to get our meal under way. It’s a deceptively big serving of beaut olives of various colours and dimensions and long strips of gorgeous red capsicum, zucchini and eggplant. Given the charcoal chook inspiration going on here, I was only ever going to order one thing – the very same thing that I ALWAYS order in chicken shops: Half a chicken with slaw and chips ($28.50). The price here is higher, of course, but no more than expected. The chicken near the various bones is excellent, moist and delicious. The breast meat is dry – as it so often is, no matter the price. But it’s not terminally so, and certainly all this could easily be fixed up with a small pot
SUNSHINE SOCIAL Address: 64 Glengala Road, Sunshine West Phone: 9312 0223 of gravy as per charcoal shop tradition. The chips are very fine and the slaw a crunchy, lightly-dressed delight. The meat served with Nat’s order of “lamb shoulder with Mediterranean herbs” ($22.50 with one side) is tasty. But we are both surprised the sheep meat is sliced and more like your regular lamb roast than the fall-apart epic the phrase “lamb shoulder” automatically suggests to us. The no-hesitation thumbs-up of the night goes to Bennie’s fried chicken burger ($13.50). He loves the big, succulent, crisp chunk of fried chicken and gives his burger – abetted by slaw, cheese and jalapenos – an eight out of 10. He gets chips with his sandwich and an extra order of slaw on the side that is plenty big enough for both himself and Nat. On the basis of community reaction and our experience just a few days into its life, the place will endure and then some. And next time, we may expand our ordering horizons to the likes of pork ribs, grilled calamari, a range of meat on sticks or Moroccan lamb snags. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Consistency the key for Falcons City West Falcons have held Boroondara Express at bay to record their second win of the Victorian Netball League championship division. The Falcons started slowly before hitting the front towards the end of the first quarter. Once in front, they stayed there, winning 53-48. For Falcons coach Marg Lind, the Monday night win was pleasing. Both sides had a shorter break than usual and with other netball commitments, many of the Falcons had played three games in six days. “It was a really good win,” Lind said. “It was a big increase in workload. “They had a pretty good line-up, with Emma Ryde and Samantha Gooden from Melbourne Vixens and Collingwood in goals.
“We were in control for a lot of the game and got it out to 10 goals in the third quarter.” “They re-jigged their line-up going into the last. We threw a few balls away late so it should have been a six- to seven-goal lead.” Kath Knott finished with 42 goals from 47 attempts, while Stephanie Puopolo shot 11. The win is the Falcons’ second of the season. After a disrupted first game, they have had the same combinations for the past two games. “We’re not quite there,” Lind said. “We’ll get better connections and get better working together. Steph and Kath haven’t played together for five or six years and their games have changed in that time. We’re trying to get them in sync. “Steph hasn’t played with Maggie [Lind] and only played with Molly [Jovic] at Victorian
Fury. They are starting to come together.” With the Falcons sitting at 2-1, Lind said they were happy with the start of the season. “I thought we had a tough draw first up,” she said. “MU [Melbourne University] was always a danger game and Blaze [DC North East Blaze] and Boroondara are always difficult. I’m happy with two wins – it settles us down.” In division 1, a 20-goal last quarter got the Falcons over the line against Boroondara. The Falcons led by one goal at three-quarter time before shooting 20 goals to 12 in the final quarter to win 59-50. Tharjini Sivalingan shot 28 goals for the Falcons, including 18 from 20 attempts in the final quarter. Tara Murray
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Scott
Korczynski is the latest member of the sacked coaches’ club after being terminated by Caroline Springs Football Club. A few months ago he was the toast of the Lakers as the coach of their WRFL premiership-winning division 2 side. Five games later, he is on the scrapheap. We all know that is the cruel reality of football. What was wrong here was the way it was handled. You can argue about the timing, which I personally think was poor. What does not sit right with me is sacking someone over the phone. I wonder how the club would have felt if Scott had called them and said: “Sorry, got a better offer. I quit. Good luck for the rest of the season.” The situation deserved a face-to-face resolution. A player walkout was mentioned as a likely scenario if the coach was not sacked. That may have been the case – and if so, it must mean big changes at the club. It may as well not have a committee because the club has made it clear to everyone – including prospective coaches – that the players run the place. Last time I looked at the ladder, those players were responsible for zero wins and five losses. In all honesty, I doubt the majority of players were on the verge of walking out. I am not for one moment saying there were not problems that needed to be addressed. Clearly there were. One of the things that footy in the west has always prided itself on is respect. It was sadly lacking here. The aftermath will have long-term effects on the Lakers.
■ The
Kick-starting US career By Ewen McRae Caitlin Greiser is steadily climbing the ladder to soccer stardom. The 18-year-old from Caroline Springs is coming off a mammoth 12 months that has included winning club awards, training with W-League club Melbourne City, and travelling to the US to play in front of college scouts. The result is Greiser will be packing her bags for Miami in January to embark on a full athletic scholarship to Barry University, while still setting her sights on W-League contracts and national representation ambitions. It’s a long way from playing futsal at her local centre. “They told me to go try outdoor instead of indoor, they must have thought I had some sort of skill,” Greiser said. After starting at Green Gully Soccer Club, she moved to George Cross for two seasons before making the move to current club South
Melbourne. Each new club was seen as a stepping stone to push her talent. “I wanted to open up my opportunities to go play a higher level, so each club stood out for that at the time,” she said. “When I first came to South Melbourne I was in the under 16s, and the coach asked me to train with the reserves and seniors. That year I played more senior games than reserves so they gave me plenty of opportunities.” The striker has already made her mark at the club, scoring eight goals in a game last season to set a club record. It also put her on the radar for a trip to the US earlier this year, which set her career on a new path. “My coach, Socrates [Nicolaidis], took 18 or 19 girls over and we played two tournaments,” Greiser said. “We won every game in the first tournament but lost every one in the second one, but the improvement was enormous. Then I got
contacted by eight different colleges and two offered me scholarships. “So I’ll be there [Miami] for four years, and coming back in the breaks to hopefully play here. I want to play in the W-League one day, so this will help with that, hopefully.” Greiser trained with Melbourne City at times last year, getting the chance to meet stars such as Tim Cahill. The long-term dream is to make it as a striker for the Matildas. Greiser is the May nominee of the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Greiser will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes, to help her in achieving her sports goals.

WRFL interleague sides had a mixed bag of results at the weekend, with the under-19s recording a gutsy three-point victory over the Northern Football League and the seniors on the receiving end of a 125-point thrashing. That margin is embarrassing for the competition. I wonder where interleague sits in the minds of the modern player. Is it something that is best left for under-age football? Other leagues seem to embrace the concept vigorously at senior level. I spent last Saturday in Wangaratta, where I found it is very important in local footy there. But I fear suburban footy is these days less based on geography than it has ever been, leading to a decrease in parochial passion. Maybe in five or six years, when the WRFL points system balances out the dollars, we will see more local passion for the interleague jumper.

Jets’ lack of targets exacts a losing toll A lack of dominant forward targets inevitably cost Western Jets a shot at victory as they went down to Greater Western Victoria by eight points at the weekend. While the Jets had 15 more forward 50 entries across the match, they lacked targets to make the most of that domination, fading late in the game to lose 11.5 (71)-9.9 (63). Jets coach Torin Baker said that while there was plenty to be proud of in the game, the result was disappointing. “In terms of the way we wanted to play the game, it was a good performance,” he said. “Our clearance winning ability was good and the amount of ball we got forward of centre was where we wanted it. But we had some real issues with our forward entries and then having enough forwards that could do the job on the day … in the end we just couldn’t do the job.” The game was an arm wrestle from the opening bounce, with Zak Butters’ early major
cancelled out by the Rebels as the teams traded blows in the opener. Neither side was able to stretch out beyond a 17-point lead all day. The Rebels led midway through the second quarter, but the Jets hauled that in by the long break and established their own nine-point buffer by the final change. Jets captain Nick Stuhldreier (34 disposals, 11 tackles) continued his strong start to the season with plenty of midfield presence across the game, while Connor Thar (28 disposals) was solid across half-forward and Josh Mould held down the defence with aplomb. Unfortunately, the Rebels made better use of their final quarter chances, kicking 4.2 to the Jets’ 1.2 to take the win. But Baker said his young side was on the right path. “We’re playing a reasonable amount of bottom-aged players at the moment,” he said.
“With that in mind, the season is probably tracking where it should be. “It’s just we’ve lost two games now where we had opportunities to win – maybe we should have pinched a couple more wins. “We know we’re not a top three team – and we’ve lost three games to the top three – but I’m really pleased with the way the players are approaching every game. “We feel we’ve been competitive for long times in every game. The effort is there, just not the results yet.” Ewen McRae

WRFL cops a thumping By Ewen McRae The Western Region Football League has been comprehensively humbled by the Northern Football League. Saturday’s interleague encounter was beset by poor kicking for goal by both sides early, but once the NFL players started kicking straight the gulf in class soon became apparent. The 24.17 (161)-5.6 (36) scoreline at Preston City Oval told the story. WRFL coach Anthony Eames said it was a valuable experience for his young side. “We gave it a good crack early, and even after quarter-time, but they [NFL] were just able to capitalise better on mistakes,” Eames said. “I think our group, especially the young blokes who have come through the junior ranks of the competition, will learn a lot from that game.”

Williamstown flexed its muscle against North Ballarat on Saturday, blowing the Roosters away in the first quarter to set up a percentage-boosting win. Travelling to Eureka Stadium, the Seagulls had more than three times as many shots on goal as their opponents as they romped home for a 17.21 (123) to 4.8 (32) win. The victory was built on a blistering opening quarter with the Gulls booting eight goals to one to open up a 43-point buffer by the first change. Arryn Siposs started well with two first quarter goals, as the Seagulls set up a pattern of multiple goalkickers which would remain for the rest of the clash. They were also able to keep the home side to just two behinds for the next two quarters as the lead ballooned beyond 10 goals. The Roosters went from the 11-minute mark of the first quarter until just after three quarter-time without a major. The home side nearly won the final quarter, but by then the damage had been done as Siposs and Leigh Masters both finished with four goals in the rout. Elsewhere, Footscray led for most of the day at Port Melbourne but was unable to keep the lead when it mattered most and they went down to the Borough, 17.9 (111) to 12.9 (81). The sides traded blows all afternoon, with neither side able to break the game open across the first three quarters of a match that was worthy of a final. Footscray led by five points at quarter-time, eight points at half-time and three points at the final change, and by halfway through the final quarter scores were locked at 80 apiece. That was when the home side made its move, with two quick goals to open the game up as Footscray struggled to get the ball into scoring positions. The Dogs would add just one behind for the rest of the match as the Borough continued their unbeaten start to the season. Footscray has three wins after five rounds ahead of this week’s clash with Geelong.
I think we dropped off across the board with our - Anthony Eames skills
’’
Just one major was kicked in the opening stanza, at the end of which the NFL led by four points. That was as close as the WRFL side would get. The NFL had two more majors on the board inside three minutes of the restart. Hoppers Crossing’s Jordan Staley kicked the first WRFL goal, but the Northern men slammed on seven more goals before half-time. Staley added a second major, his side going into the long break staring down the barrel of defeat at 67-18. The experience of the NFL shone through after the break as the side kicked 14.10 to just three goals for the rest of the match. Reece Miles kicked two goals in the third for the WRFL, while Sunshine’s Ben Christodoulou kicked the last goal of the game. Down back, Braden Ferrari and Liam Cavanagh toiled hard under an avalanche of defensive 50 entries. “They [NFL] are a polished and experienced outfit,” Eames said. “I think we dropped off across the board with our skills. “We still kept having a dip, but let ourselves down with our skill level and they were good enough to capitalise on that after quarter-time. “We over used it a bit by hand and once they got their tails up they were hard to stop.” Despite the loss, Eames said the interleague experience was a positive one for his young charges. “I think those that want to improve got a look at the work that you have got to do to get to that level,” he said. “There’s a lot of strength work required … a couple more big pre-seasons will do our boys the world of good. “I think if our boys are able to do that, and get more experience at this level, then they will be better footballers in the long run.” 48 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 17, 2017

Hard slog to victory By Ewen McRae While the top two division of the Western Region Football League took a break over the interleague weekend, division three had a top-of-the-table clash between Tarneit and Parkside that delivered a thriller. In a classic game of two halves, Parkside was kept scoreless after half-time yet managed to come away with a 13-point win to take top spot on the ladder as the only unbeaten side after five rounds. The 9.10 (64) to 7.9 (51) scoreline only told part of the story, and Parkside coach Nick Condos was still scratching his head over what unfolded. “The first half was really good, and we knew they would come back at us, but it’s lucky we did enough in that first half to get the win,” Condos said. “We were able to get it inside 50 but unfortunately weren’t able to convert, which is something to keep working on.” It was all going to plan early on for Parkside, with key forward Jason Cloke (three goals) providing a strong target up forward and the defenders locking down on their opponents to keep the home side to just one goal in the first term. By the first break the Magpies had stretched out to a 30-9 lead, and they more than doubled that in the second quarter as they threatened to rout the Titans. Going into the long break with a 64-10 advantage had many in the crowd thinking it was game over, but the Titans had other ideas as they turned the game on its head in the third quarter. Not only did they keep the visitors scoreless but they kicked four goals of their own to close the gap to 29 points at the final change. However, the poor start eventually caught up with the home side, and despite keeping Parkside scoreless again they could muster just 2.4 for the term as they suffered their first loss of the season. Condos said there was plenty to be proud of with the win, but the second half showed they were far from the finished product at this stage of the season. “Our back line was really good, especially in the first half to keep them to just 10 points, so that’s pleasing,” he said. “The game was won and lost in the middle and we had the best of that in the first half, but you’re always worried when the opposition is coming at you late. “To the boys credit they stuck to the task when things weren’t going our way in the second half and were able to grind it out, which you have to do sometimes.” Parkside will host Sanctuary Lakes this weekend, while Tarneit will travel to play the Wyndham Suns.

Williamstown CYMS grabbed its third win of the VAFA Premier C season at the weekend, proving too strong for Hampton Rovers. Williamstown had twice as many shots on goal in the opening quarter but only managed a wasteful 4.5. Six goals to one in the second quarter set up the lead, and by the end it was a 19.9 (111) to 6.13 (49) victory. Mitch Parkinson and Ben Deller both snared four goals in the win, which has them on the right side of a 3-2 win-loss ledger. Five Western Jets have been shortlisted for a place in the Vic Metro squad for this years’ national championships. Tristan Xerri, Nick Stuhldreier, Cameron Rayner, Buku Khamis, and Lachlan Fogarty are part of the 47-strong squad that has been invited to trial for the side in the lead-up to the championships in June and July.

Altona slipped to its fifth loss of the Big V Division two season on Saturday, going down to Pakenham. While the Gators matched Pakenham in general play, the Warriors had a mountain of free throws that kept them ahead of the game. Altona made 10 of their 19 free throw attempts, but Pakenham converted 19 of 32 shots in the 93-85 win. Justin Eckhardt was the standout player for the Gators with 21 points, four 3-pointers and four rebounds. The Gators play with Southern Peninsula on Saturday, followed by North East Bushrangers on Sunday.
Soccer
Altona Magic are a perfect seven wins from seven games to start the state league one season, continuing their winning streak with a single goal triumph over Geelong on Saturday. Jon McShane scored the only goal for the game with Geelong unable to penetrate the tight-knit defence of the Magic in the 1-0 result.

Footscray continued its tough start to the Dewar Shield season, losing to Melbourne Uni on Saturday. Altona’s young guns dig deep for a welcome win Altona broke its hoodoo against Powerhouse/ St Kilda in spectacular fashion on Saturday, registering a commanding win over last year’s finalist to shoot themselves to second on the premier league ladder. Despite conceding early goals, Altona ran riot in the second half to win 6-2 and banish some demons in the process. Altona captain Steve Campbell said it was an important win in the context of their season. “We hadn’t been able to knock off Powerhouse over the last three seasons, so we went in as the underdogs but pretty confident despite that,” Campbell said. “They got the jump on us, but then, like we’ve done the last couple of weeks, we were able to wear the opposition down and overrun them in the second half. “Getting a win on the board against these
guys was important for the season, it really sets us up for the next part of the season where the majority of the sides we play will be below us.” Powerhouse/St Kilda dominated the early parts of the match to grab two goals in the opening two minutes, and looked like they may run away with the game as they had on numerous other occasions. But Altona dug in their heels, weathered the storm and then struck back, grabbing one goal in the first half before dominating the second half. Five different players got on the score sheet for the hosts, with Jyah Johnson grabbing two goals from a strong midfield game, and Lachie Arnell getting a goal in his first game in the ones for the season. Campbell was particularly impressed with the win, given the youth of his side.
“We had two of our most experienced players out, so we had to bring in two young players which made it quite a young squad,” Campbell said. “For the guys to not lower their heads when Powerhouse could have played over the top of us, and then to bounce back, was something I was really impressed with. “We speak about maturity and development, and we try to bring that to our squad, and in past years we would have dropped that game so it was pleasing not to do that.” Ewen McRae Altona’s Andrew Scanlon launches the ball down the ground in their win over Powerhouse/ St Kilda. olkswagen’s Golf GTI has earned more than a few plaudits across its four decades of history, crafting a reputation as the hot hatch by which others are measured. The brand’s seventh-generation GTI arrived in 2013, bringing a significant increase in performance, as well as a lighter, stronger platform and more polished interior. This year’s model was always going to be impressive. The new car builds on a solid foundation with more power, sharper styling and an updated interior that offers technology rarely seen in cars priced under $100,000.It’s also a more focused-looking car that adds an extra dollop of aggression to a model that already offers significant aesthetic appeal. The emotional pull continues on the inside, where classic GTI touches in tartan seat trim and a golf ball-inspired gearknob meet modern additions such as an Audi-sourced dash that offers customisable views including beautifully rendered maps, in-depth trip computer info and a lap timer for track day junkies. We can’t say the same about the central infotainment screen, with its annoying lack of a volume knob and hit-and-miss gesture control. While you could accuse the regular Golf ’s cabin of being a little too demure, the GTI’s red-stitched flat-bottomed steering wheel, pin-stripe ambient lighting and well-bolstered seats make the hatch feel genuinely special in a way none of its c$40,000 rivals can match. It feels appropriately brisk on the road, effortlessly overtaking and powering out of bends with most of the gusto you’d expect from a modern performance car. While not the quickest car in its class,
