West Footscray’s Santiago Cuyugan will be competing against finalists from as far as Russia and the US in the Savour Patissier of the Year competition in Melbourne this month. The pastry chef and chocolatier at Bibelot in South Melbourne could not reveal this year’s creations but said he would be playing it safe after learning from last year’s mistake. “I did a pastry with … apple and parsnip and unfortunately two of the judges from Europe couldn’t understand what a parsnip was,” he said. “Maybe the translation didn’t go through.” Entrants are required to make four pastries in the categories of cake, eclair, dessert and tart. Last year, Mr Cuyugan made a milk chocolate, lime and earl grey cake which was “shaped like a bunch of bubbles”. He also made a pecan, vanilla, milk chocolate and spice tart, and mascarpone, apricot and almond eclair. The four judges are internationallyrenowned pastry chefs Christophe Michalak, Jordi Roca and Antonio Bachour, and chocolatier Paul Kennedy. Altona units on the rise By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona has pipped Toorak to record Melbourne’s second highest unit price growth, according to the Domain House Price Report for the March quarter. West Footscray made the top 10 suburbs for house price growth, coming in at No. 6, on the heels of South Yarra. Altona’s median unit price soared 30.6 per cent to $580,000 in the 12 months to March. Toorak recorded a 30.4 per cent growth in unit prices. Barlow McEwan Tribe First National’s
Anthony Molinia said unit and townhouse prices had dramatically increased over the past year in the wake of skyrocketing house prices in the area. “We are now seeing buyers coming from all over Melbourne as Altona is recognised as a genuine bayside suburb with its own swimming beach,” he said. “Not to mention the excellent public transport … schools, beautiful parks, cafes and restaurants. “The secret is out: Altona is now on the radar … it is only 15 kilometres from the CBD and the potential for growth has been very much understated in the past.”
The house median in West Footscray grew 29.2 per cent to $885,000. A four-bedroom house at 15 Rupert Street recently set a new record for a family home, selling for $1.325 million – $25,000 over the past record. Selling agent, hockingstuart’s Marcus Fregonese said he had lived in West Footscray his whole life. “The appeal for West Footscray is that it’s so close to the CBD, there’s fantastic primary schools, fantastic parks,” he said. “Five years ago it was probably a spillover suburb where people were coming there purely because they couldn’t afford Yarraville and Seddon, and now it’s certainly a destination
suburb with cafes, the gentrification and the lifestyle. “You couldn’t get a coffee five years ago and now there’s five cafes in West Footscray.” Domain chief economist Andrew Wilson said Melbourne’s west would continue to rise. “The west still offers value, reflecting high levels of residential amenity with reasonable proximity and commute to the CBD,” he said. “Prices, however, can be expected to continue to rise in the region, reflecting the value advantage and fuelled by a flood of first home buyers likely from July and record migration continuing into Melbourne.”

Hobsons Bay City Council has adopted its draft 2016-17 Budget, which includes capital works projects to the tune of $35.13 million to improve local infrastructure and will continue to provide more than 100 important community services. In Cherry Lake Ward, highlights include: $4.59 million to build the Altona Early Years Centre; $2 million on the Foreshore Renewal Program, including $1.4 million to replace the sand from Sarros Street to Apex Park; $1.78 million on stage three of the Kororoit Creek Shared Trail; $500,000 to demolish and construct new toilets at the Altona Boat Ramp and Ransom Reserve and $200,000 to refurbish Altona Library. Over the next 10 years, Hobsons Bay City Council will be upgrading coastal infrastructure to reduce the impacts of sea level rises and storm surge events to the Altona and Seaholme community. Gaps in the seawall compromise the functionality of the seawall, resulting in inundation and localised flooding. To mitigate these risks, Council is proposing to “close” these gaps and construct access points for pedestrians at heights that meet the predicted rise in sea level by 2070. The Correa Street pedestrian beach access point is the first of these projects and includes a raised platform with an accessible ramp and stairs leading to the beach, a viewing platform extending into the beach and tiered seating to deflect waves during storm and tide events. Works are expected to start this month and take eight weeks to complete. Detours will be on site to direct around sections of the shared trail that are

closed and Council is working to minimise disruption to local residents and community members.

With the adoption of Council’s Proposed 2017-18 Budget, Strand Ward’s highlights include: $770,000 to repair Hudsons Road, Spotswood, between Booker Street and Hall Street; $680,000 to build JT Gray Reserve’s new pavilion; $675,000 to renew Lenore Crescent, Williamstown; $630,000 to fix Electra Street, Williamstown, between Parker Street and Ferguson Street; $610,000 to replace the existing gravel car park with asphalt at Newport Lakes; $600,000 to upgrade Charles Street, Williamstown; $600,000 –on Williamstown Mechanics Institute renewal works; $500,000 to renew drainage at Challis Street, from Woods Street to Mason Street, Newport; and $450,000 to upgrade sportsground Oval 1 at Loft Reserve, Newport. All road works are part of a long term maintenance plan.
The renovation of the Williamstown Town Hall precinct will soon be complete with works on the Town Hall forecourt, carpark and Lenore Crescent to begin this month. The works will be the final piece of the puzzle in this major redevelopment project, which began in 2009, and will bring the surrounding amenities up to scratch with the renovated Town Hall. The existing forecourt will be demolished to make way for a new public space with seating, bike racks and landscaping to reflect the style of the restored Town Hall building. The 25 space car park will be resurfaced and Lenore Crescent, the street adjacent to the carpark, will undergo rehabilitation works including road resurfacing, tree maintenance and the installation of an underground drainage system. The library and Town Hall will remain open for the duration of

In Wetlands Ward, the Proposed 201718 Budget delivers several big ticket items, including: $400,000 to construct the second stage of the Comben reserve/Cooraminta Kindergarten car park; $300,000 on the Laverton Stormwater Harvesting rectification works; $320,000 to upgrade the Skeleton Creek Shared Trail; $270,000 for stage one of the footpath renewal program at McCormack Park; $165,000 to design the extension of the Altona Sports Centre; $100,000 to resurface Victoria Street, Altona Meadows, between Queen Street and Trafalgar Street; $80,000 to renew the playground at Woods Street Reserve, Laverton; and $60,000 for the future plan of the Laverton Swim Centre.
To better maintain the sporting ovals and improve safety for families using the playspace, Hobsons Bay City Council is trialling changes to the dog on and off leash areas at AB Shaw Reserve, Altona Meadows. Changes include the implementation of dog on leash areas on sportgrounds and within the playground to create a safe and enjoyable environment for all park users. All other nearby open space areas will remain off-leash for dog owners to let their dogs run. The trial will be in place until March 2018 and will be reviewed following its completion. Signs will be in place to outline the changes and Council’s Local Laws Officers will be monitoring the site with regular patrols. Council encourages dog owners to abide by the trial and to

the renovation but the carpark will be closed for approximately 4 to 5 months.
Hatt Reserve Council expects to have all the necessary approvals to reconstruct the Williamstown Beach Shelter at Hatt Reserve in coming weeks. The shelter suffered structural damage during the October 2016 storms and has been closed ever since for safety reasons. Investigations revealed the timber structure needs replacing. The shelter is historically significant and forms part of the Esplanade Foreshore Heritage Precinct. Works will begin mid-2017 ahead of the shelter reopening later in the year. Until this time the shelter will remain closed. Alternative picnic tables can be found in the Pinetum, in front of the Williamstown Botanic Gardens. Solar panels Work began this week to install solar panels at the Altona Meadows Library and the Laverton Community Hub. The project, together with others at Altona North and Williamstown Libraries, will result in the installation of over 243kW of solar and a reduction of over 393 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, which is 17 per cent of 2265, the target in our adopted Target 2265 plan. The installation will be complete by 30 June.

Crossing rail bridge unveiled By Goya Dmytryshchak The final design of the rail bridge over Kororoit Creek Road outside the Mobil refinery at Williamstown North has been released. The state government has announced that the contract for the level crossing removal has been awarded to an alliance led by McConnell Dowell, Arup and Mott McDonald. As part of the removal, 800 metres of the Altona loop will be duplicated so trains can pass each other. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said work would be fast-tracked to start this year, with the level crossing expected to be gone by the end of 2018.

“No government has ever removed this many level crossings, this quickly,” she said. “We’re ahead of schedule and we’re not slowing down – work is under way all over Melbourne removing these congested death traps.” Level Crossing Removal Authority project director Tony Hedley said an extended closure of the Altona loop for up to 60 days was expected about the middle of next year. “This project will significantly improve road safety in the area while also reducing the risk of train delays on the Altona loop,” he said. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said she was pleased with the partial duplication of the Altona loop and elements of the design,
including landscaping in Racecourse Road and improved safety and connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists. “However, at 151 on the list, it was hardly one of the most dangerous or congested level crossings that required removal,” she said. “There are also a number of other crossings we would like considered in the future, including Maidstone Street (north), Altona; Maddox Road, Williamstown North; and Hudsons Road, Spotswood.” If the alliance meets performance measures on the project, it will retain the contract to remove level crossings at Aviation Road in Laverton and Ferguson Street in Williamstown.

Plea to help Roma stay By Goya Dmytryshchak An elderly Altona Meadows woman who is in the advanced stages of cancer is in danger of losing her rental home. Roma Prosser, 89, is being cared for at home by one of her foster daughters, Samantha Hammersley. The home is shared by Roma’s disabled son Sidney and “grand-dad” George, who also has cancer. Samantha, who has quit her job and postponed her masters degree to become a carer, said Roma had given up everything for her and her siblings.
“I think Roma always wanted a daughter – she could only ever have one child,” Samantha said. “I had three other siblings and she took them in as well. “Not once did Roma apply for or receive any government benefits while she was caring for us.” Roma has a rare lung cancer caused by a genetic mutation and is too frail to undergo chemotherapy. Samantha has started a Go Fund Me Page to help with the $1600 monthly rent, and medical and nursing costs. “I will gladly care for them full time for as

Hobsons Bay council on Tuesday night paid tribute to South Melbourne Brownlow medallist Fred Goldsmith of Spotswood, who died last month aged 84. Recruited from Spotswood, Goldsmith won the Brownlow Medal in 1955 and the Swans’ goalkicking award in 1957. Goldsmith was named on the Sydney Swans Team of the Century in 2003 and was inducted into the Swans Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2002, the council named a new playing field in Spotswood in his honour.

A social media campaign to encourage breast cancer screening has been launched ahead of Mother’s Day on Sunday. BreastScreen Victoria has created an image for people to share on Facebook to pledge that they will take their mother for a breast screen. Images are being shared under #breastassured. BreastScreen Victoria, which has a clinic at 77 Paisley Street in Footscray, offers free screening to women aged 50-74 years. Appointments take just 10 minutes and are with a woman. BreastScreen Victoria chief executive Vicki Pridmore said family members could play an important role in the health of their loved ones. “What better way to show your mother that you care than by taking a positive step to

The volunteering work of Raymond Whitzell was acknowledged at Tuesday night’s Hobsons Bay council meeting. Mr Whitzell, who died last month at age 76, delivered meals with the council’s Food Services from 2004-16 and also volunteered with Gateway Community Services in South Kingsville. In 1960, he played three AFL games for Footscray and also played in their reserves.
Fire under investigation
Police are investigating the cause of a Maidstone house fire about 8.30pm on Sunday. The fire, in the vacant Bernard Street house, took 26 firefighters 11 minutes to control. The damage to the single-storey house was confined to the kitchen, an adjacent room and the roof. Pen pistols, ice, land man in jail By Goya Dmytryshchak A man has been sentenced to 12 months’ jail for manufacturing pen pistols and trafficking heroin and methamphetamine or ice. Nghia Lam, 37, who was living at Altona North, Werribee and Williamstown at the time of offending, pleaded guilty in the County Court to five charges relating to drugs and firearms. The court heard that in 2015 and 2016, police conducted a number of operations targeting
alleged trafficking of heroin and ice by Lam. Lam unknowingly sold the drugs to undercover police, before mentioning to one operative that he was involved in manufacturing pen pistols of various calibres which he sold for $200 each. In March last year, Lam was arrested and police executed search warrants at his Altona North home and previous address in Williamstown. The next month, police visited a caravan park where Lam had lived and recovered two
drills used to manufacture firearms from his associate. Judge Sandra Davis sentenced Lam to 12 months’ imprisonment and a two-year community corrections order, with 386 days on remand already served. He was fined $1500 on summary charges of possessing cartridge and ammunition without a licence and possessing a large dagger. Judge Davis said there was an interest in keeping Lam drug-free within the community so that he could stabilise his personal and
financial position and play a role in the lives of his three children. The court heard Lam came to Australia from Vietnam at age two and left school in year 11 to support his family by drug dealing. He was shot through the neck at age 16. The court heard that Lam and a former partner had used heroin and ice daily and Lam made pen pistols to support themselves. Two months before Lam’s arrest, they had started seeing a psychiatrist and were placed on a methadone program.
Braybrook bright sparks Two bright Braybrook College students have been recognised for scoring top marks in a VCE VET subject they completed while in year 11. Katrina Van and Judy Hang received the Premier’s VCE High Achiever awards for near-perfect scores of 47 and 48 respectively in their VCE VET subject community services last year. Braybrook College careers co-ordinator and community services teacher Rowena Archer said the girls were recognised as excellent students and were invited to be part of an accelerated VCE program when in year 9. She said their interest in pursuing careers in health and community service industries led them to the VCE VET community services subject, which teaches students the ins and outs of disabilities, child and aged care work and how to work in linguistically and culturally diverse communities.
Ms Archer said she was thrilled when she found out the pair had been recognised for their excellent results. “These two students were stand-out candidates, they worked really hard,” she said. Miss Van said she would pursue tertiary studies, possibly in psychology, after completing year 12, while Miss Hang said she was considering a career as a social worker. Last week, they were among 287 students who received study awards. Students must score 46 or above to be eligible for the awards, which recognise young Victorians who have completed the Victorian Certificate of Education with distinction. At 92, great-grandmother Marie Marchant is older than many of the patients she cares for at Footscray Hospital. The long-time Deer Park resident signed up to the hospital’s volunteer program in 1998, the year her husband Ted died there after suffering cardiac arrest. Mrs Marchant is the oldest of Western Health’s 400 volunteers, who are being recognised for their contributions during National Volunteer Week. Every morning, she completes a cryptic crossword at home before having tea and toast and heading out the door. She has no plans of easing up any time soon. “Well, at least until I can’t drive any more,” Mrs Marchant said. She said she felt at home when she walked through the entrance of Footscray Hospital. “I just feel as though it wraps its arms around you when you walk through the door,” she said Mrs Marchant has held several volunteering roles at Footscray, including visitor guide, administration and talking and listening with palliative care and cancer patients. She shuns the use of a calculator in administration. “I like to use this,” she said, pointing to her head. “I won’t use a calculator – I hate them.” Footscray Hospital volunteer co-ordinator Michelle Dellios described Mrs Marchant as “just a joy”. “Her love of the hospital is overwhelming,” Ms Dellios said. “She can adapt to any situation and she’s always happy to do extra. “She’s amazing.”

Footscray’s first “community bar” is on the verge of becoming a reality. Pride of our Footscray, which will be co-owned by hundreds of shareholders, is the brainchild of Yarraville’s Mathew O’Keefe. Mr O’Keefe saw the need for a GLBTIQ safe space in Footscray that would be a welcoming haven of belonging. While Mr O’Keefe will stand as the “Chief Bar Officer”, he wants everyone who has chipped in their $500 for a share in the project to feel a sense of pride in the place. “I will be the licensee for practical purposes, but I want this to be a chance for anyone who has always wanted to own a bar to have that chance,” he said. Award par for the course By Goya Dmytryshchak Kooringal Golf Club at Altona has scored back-to-back wins after being named best golf club for the second consecutive year. It was a joint winner with Ballarat Golf Club in the Community Clubs Victoria (CCV) awards. CCV president Leon Wiegard described Kooringal as “a local icon”. “Kooringal Golf Club’s win as best golf club was obviously no fluke,” he said. “Winning two years in a row indicates that they are a club of great quality right across the various departments.” Mr Wiegard said this included course maintenance and design, encouragement of golf among all sectors and support for the community. Kooringal general manager Anthony White said the club had fostered a strong community relationship through events such as a free family fun day at Christmas. “Golf club of the year represents not just the best playing facilities – although that’s taken into consideration – it’s the things we do for community, our members and our patrons,” he said. The Kooringal Golf Club Foundation was created two years ago to establish a permanent fund, independent of club administration, to support juniors. Mr White said the foundation aimed to encourage young people from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds to play golf. “The community in Altona is from all cultural backgrounds, and we see that in our golf clinics, and we want to celebrate that.” Yarraville Club was also named joint winner with Club Kilsyth for ‘Best club entertainment program’.

Time to pass on the honour With just five days left to nominate someone to carry the Queen’s baton for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, a retired Williamstown Primary School principal recounts her moment of glory. Tilly Barger carried the baton along Altona’s Civic Parade in the lead-up to the 2006 Commonwealth Games. “It was a massive honour, and then seeing the sort of other people that I was carrying the baton along with, people that were icons in our own community, it was a very proud moment.” The baton, containing a message from the Queen, left Buckingham Palace on March 13. It will cross Australia for 100 days from Christmas Day, passing through Footscray and Williamstown on February 10 as two of only seven Melbourne stops. Pallas defends hits and misses Education, health, police and transport were the big winners from last week’s state budget. Star Weekly’s Charlene Macaulay sat down with treasurer Tim Pallas to find out what this budget means for the west. Why has the state government slashed funding for its Growing Suburbs Fund in half? We were starting to get a bit concerned about the quality of the offerings coming out of bidders for access to these funds. These funds are aimed at providing community facilities and upgrades that growth areas should expect. I want to make sure that councils are making the effort to give us a clear appreciation of what they want, and what they’re prepared to commit as well. The budget included funding for new SES units in Point Cook and Caroline Springs/ Plumpton. Why were these areas identified? We recognise that it’s a volunteer service that does an amazing job. We also recognise that councils are under a bit of pressure … we’ve said that we will take over all of the funding of the SES, so that the state manages it. So when councils start complaining about rate capping, we are now starting to move into the provision of some of their service areas to help them out a bit. Importantly, what this will mean for the SES is security of funding into the long term. What we’re asking councils to do as part of those arrangements is to be prepared to hand over the leaseholds of the facilities. I think we’ll see more and more co-locations of our emergency services in the future, it makes sense. Treasurer Tim Pallas handed down the state budget last week. (Penny Stephens)

We take them seriously, but this has been a very difficult budget in a lot of ways. We have to look after the needs of the entire state. One of the less attractive parts of being a treasurer is post a budget to try and explain to people why their particular projects didn’t get up. The sad reality is, sometimes these proposals and projects have great merit, it’s just that there is not an inexhaustible levels of funds, and we have to prioritise the use of those funds. We do take council advocacy seriously … I hope councils, I hope community groups don’t think that we’re dismissive of their ideas, it’s just that choices have to be made.

Money was set aside in last year’s budget to plan for the electrification of the Melton railway line. Has the study been completed and what has that study identified? The study isn’t yet complete, the public transport minister is still working on it. Electrification of the Melton line will provide, we believe, much greater access to the city. Does the state government plan on looking into and spending money on alternate forms of waste management other than landfill? The idea of the landfill levy that we’ve put in place is about making sure we discourage, through pricing signals, to industry and to users of our landfill that they look at the provision of alternative technologies, and those
funds can, and are, being directed towards how we might reduce our dependence along broad levels of landfill. Will the state government reconsider selling former school sites in Brimbank, including the former Calder Rise site in Keilor? The sale of school sites is generally a requirement for the department of education to identify, firstly, if they think that land is surplus
to their needs, secondly, does any other state government have a use to which the land can be put, and then thirdly, we approach councils to see if they have a role to which the land can be put. Only where the answer to all three is no is the land sold into the private market. Considering it is trying to buy land in Plumpton for the new Taylors Hill West Secondary College school now, would it not make sense to keep these sites for growth?
One of the problems you confront as a government is that you need money to acquire new sites, and sometimes you’ve got to make a judgement about whether existing sites are the right ones. We’ve put a lot more effort into precinct structure planning through the Victorian Planning Authority so that we don’t get caught in situations like this in the future, where we’re holding land that is no longer fit for the purpose for which it was held in the first place.

Ilch and Dijana Mickovski, owners of Eco Laundry Room in Altona, say winning the New Business of the Year award in the Hobsons Bay Business Excellence Awards has provided a magnificent boost for their operation. “Winning New Business of the Year has been fantastic for us,” Ilch said. “The award has opened opportunities to develop the Eco Laundry Room to become a respected leader in the laundry industry. “We know the category was heavily contested so we were humbled by the win. And it gave us fresh impetus to further improve our business model.” The pair recently opened their newest
concept store in Point Cook, a further step in plans of establishing new stores across the state. Restoration ignites hope Volunteers restoring the homestead at the Truganina Explosives Reserve in Altona want it placed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Ralph Coghill from the Truganina Explosives Reserves Preservation Society said the residence on Queen Street, built for the officer-in-charge and their family, had fallen in to disrepair and had been in danger of collapsing. The society started the homestead restoration on a modest budget from public donations before successfully applying for funding assistance from Hobsons Bay council in 2015. It also received money from Toyota. It has nominated the site for listing on the state heritage register. “The state register requires that you show that the place has state significance and at the moment it’s only regarded as having local significance,” Mr Coghill said. “We believe it has state significance because
it was the only government-operated repository and distribution centre for explosives for civil use – for mining, quarrying, that sort of thing. “Between when it opened in 1901 and when it closed in 1962, it made a substantial contribution to the industrial development of Victoria.” Mr Coghill said the group, which is aiming to open the homestead to the public next month, hoped it could also be used by study groups. “We don’t want to create a museum,” he said. “What we want to do is restore this to the way it would have looked when the first managers lived there in the early 1900s … we want to make it available for general community use.” In 2000, the community campaigned to save the site from sale to developers and Hobsons Bay council was appointed to manage the site. The rich secrets of the past belong to us all, not merely to academics and institutions, according to Seddon historian Carmel Taig. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Seddon? Dad built a red brick home in Berry Street in the ’50s, for the family of eight. This is a mere block south of Princess Street where he’d grown up and where his English-born grandparents settled in the 1890s. Princess Street is also where my husband and I set up house in 1978 and where we look like being for life. Now in the suburb of Seddon, this street used to divide Yarraville and Footscray. What do you love most about the area? Living here gives me a sense of belonging, something to be treasured these days when many people are uprooted and seeking refuge. This city embraces all-comers and is enriched as a result. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to cuisine and community celebrations. I love seeing people of all ages enjoying the Yarraville Gardens; joggers on the go … families picnicking, teams playing footy and cricket. I love to see the gardens flourishing. Do you have a favourite local place or places to spend time? My favourite walk is east across Hyde Street, along Billy Button Creek to the river, then north along the abandoned freight rail line. Head upstream past the Barnet Glass Rubber factory, Grimes Reserve, Arts Centre, Temple of the Heavenly Queen, Newells Paddock wetlands and stock bridge. Then behold Footscray Park!

Ercildoune is my favourite building. Built as a bank in 1876, it’s been the headquarters of the Footscray Historical Society since 1970. It’s a place for unearthing secrets of the past, for sharing stories and resources. I feel at home at the Naked Egg cafe, Yarraville as it is decked out in some of the society’s photographs and maps. What brought about your passion for local history and what keeps you so involved? I love ferreting out local people’s stories. My father introduced me to local history in the 1980s when he wrote a booklet on the history of St Augustine’s parish. Next came the Yarraville Federation Project, which resulted in the Yarraville in 1901 walking tour guide and installation of plaques on related heritage buildings. Since then I’ve written The Giant by the River: a history of the Yarraville Sugar Works, which is still going after 143 years. I want to get the message out that history is everyone’s responsibility – not the preserve of academics and institutions. Often the best material is in private hands. If you are the custodian of family treasures or an archive of a club or community group, label and organise your photos, and when you record anyone’s stories get permissions in writing. War is nothing to celebrate. Certainly, World War I was not ‘great’ for the thousands of young people from the Footscray district who enlisted and served abroad. A century down the track, their sacrifice for King and country must be respectfully acknowledged. With government support through the Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund, Footscray Historical Society engaged Tamara Watt and Karenne Ann as artists-in-residence. Using photo-media, both draw inspiration from artefacts and documents held in the Ercildoune archives and memorials found throughout the municipality. What’s one of your favourite local history anecdotes? The anecdotes that fascinate most bear out that ‘helicopter parenting’ is a new-age
phenomenon. Children of my generation and earlier times enjoyed more physical freedom. Unescorted, youngsters fished for eels in the backwash, rode makeshift billycarts, traversed between schools via a storm water drain, hunted rabbits, lit fireworks … I read how, in 1958, one mother lost sight of her two children down the street at Yarraville. Mum, wanting to do her morning shop, sent Dennis McLean (aged 6) and his sister Kaye (aged 5) to buy a shilling of potato chips. While playing in Doherty’s yard, the pair climbed into a van and soon found themselves locked inside. It was 4pm the next day that they were found, by a 10 year old child. The Canberra Times scribe concluded: “After a hot meal and a bath, the children were put to bed none the worse for their 30-hour imprisonment”.

Now there’s new management in the place. They’ve retained the name – and even a page of Somalian food at the back of the new menu … but the rest is all about terrific Malaysian food. In fact, based on two visits, we reckon this is some of the best, cheapest and most authentic Malaysian food you’ll find in all of Melbourne. And word appears to have gotten out – we note with assured pleasure the happy, hungry tables of customers on our visits. Chicken laksa ($10) is unlike any I’ve eaten – and as good as any, too. The chicken is so finely shredded that it’s pretty much subsumed into the gravy, but that’s fine when the soup base is so funky, house-made and delicious. Protein oomph is provided by two hardboiled egg halves, and there’s plenty of cucumber and other vegie bits to provide texture and crunch to go with the fat, short udon-style noodles. Roti canai ($5) is a wonder. Accompanying a just-right bowl of runny chicken curry (with a dob of sambal paste) are the two lightest, flakiest and best flatbreads of the Malaysian style we’ve ever eaten. Simply – wow. Char kuey teow ($10) is a bit like our laksa – unlike any we’ve before tried. This one comes in a bowl and – appropriately

No problems, though – because while the wok hei factor is predictably muted, there’s no doubting the flavours and all-round yumminess. Given the obvious real-deal vibe of everything served us thus far, we are keen to try the Ya’Salam satays. They’re unavailable, though, so we happily settle for two fine curry puffs ($1 each). Again, these are a far cry from your usual curry puffs. The rich short pastry is stuffed with an extremely toothsome jumble of chicken mince and vegetables. They could’ve been a tad hotter, however. The Ya’Salam food we’ve tried has been really fine. We’re usually not much concerned about notions of authenticity – but they have heaps of it here. Next time, we’ll be sure to try one of the many nasi goreng variations. SPORT Gators snapping at Big V ladder leaders A tough game awaits the Gators on Saturday night, as they hit the road to face the undefeated Pakenham Warriors. In women’s division 2, the youthful Altona Gators remain without a win after eight tries. The Gators were out-classed 93-48 by the Collingwood All Stars at Collingwood College on Sunday. Cassie Favero was the top scorer for the Gators with 15 points. The Tigers took the four points from Casey and also put on a great day of football and community involvement. The buzz of having the AFL-listed players from the Kangaroos and Demons running around on a suburban ground certainly brought the crowd out.

“Local soccer needs good rivalries and good club relationships and that’s what we’ve got.” Altona City was gifted the lead just 10 minutes in when Hoppers Crossing defender Jack Spargo scored an own goal. City was disciplined with its tactics and physical in its nature, not giving much room for the Reds strike force to move into, which was important with first choice goalkeeper Jack Dovey overseas. Back-up goalkeeper Viraponn Daravong answered any questions that were asked of him – though scoring opportunities for the Reds were few and far between due to the watertight City defence. City’s central defensive pairing of Kieren Farrugia and James Neighbour were nigh on impenetrable, as they have been all season. “They held it together again,” Tanti said. “They’re solid at the back, week in and week out.” Without the second goal, Altona City was always vulnerable, but it eventually came on a counter-attack through substitute Marcus Sherif. Most of the hard work in setting up the goal was done by Ayodeji Omoboye. “He just took the defence on with his pace,” Tanti said. “He got through and cut the ball in to Marcus and, as usual, he’s always cool in front of goal and just finishes it off.” It was Sherif ’s fifth goal in six league games to go with the other two goals he scored in the FFA Cup. “Marcus came on as an impact player and delivered the goods,” Tanti said. “He just seems to know where the goals are and gets himself into good spots, as good strikers do.”
■ It was a bit like old Doggies home week for me when I hosted a luncheon for the Beaumaris Football Club last week. Yes, you read right – the Beaumaris Football Club. Its director of football is 199-game Bulldogs champion Brian Royal. “Choco” and his wife, Maree, have been friends of mine for more than 30 years, so I was delighted to be of service as MC. One of the guest speakers was Mick Malthouse, former Bulldogs, Eagles, Pies and Blues coach. As some people would know, he’s not someone I have had a great relationship since his days at Whitten Oval. I was expecting the worst, but the opposite was the case. After our stage appearance, he was very complimentary and thoroughly enjoyed our question and answer session. ■ My Saturday night pre-game interview in the Bulldogs’ past players room was 1990 Charles Sutton medallist Peter Foster. “Fozzie” is one of the real down-to-earth characters of the game. He and his wife, Shelley, keep their Bulldog connection alive these days as keen supporters, and watching their son Jayden, who is on the Footscray VFL list after a short stint at Carlton when Mick Malthouse was coach. The Bulldogs’ past players association is buoyant at present. It is great to see many players who have not been around the club for a number of years back in the fold.
Altona City has savoured that sweet taste of victory over rivals Hoppers Crossing in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 at Kim Reserve on Saturday night. City leap-frogged the Reds into second on the ladder after the gutsy 2-0 win and set up a top-of-the-table showdown with ladder-leader Fitzroy City at Fairfield Park this Saturday night. “To beat Hoppers is a little joy in itself,” Altona City president Joe Tanti said. “We’re always rapt to knock Hoppers Crossing off because of that rivalry. “There was a good crowd here, a good vibe and everyone stuck around after the game, which is what it’s all about.

■ AFL tipping at the moment is a nightmare and it is no easier at local level after last weekend in the WRFL. Albion provided the upset of the season by defeating Altona. The Vikings have been pipped at the post in four of their five games this year with nine points being the biggest losing margin. Hoppers Crossing lost to Sunshine, the surprise packet of the year. The WRFL interleague teams (under-19 and seniors) will face the Northern Football League this Saturday at Preston City Oval. Division 3 matches will be the only local senior games this weekend.

Altona Gators have won four of their past five matches in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 to breathe life into their season. The Gators had to grind out a defence-minded 63-51 victory over Sherbrooke Suns at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday to keep the momentum going. Patrick Green and Justin Eckhardt were the catalysts to the latest win with both producing double-doubles for the Gators. Green had 13 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and four steals to be the game’s MVP, while Eckhardt had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Altona’s record improved to 4-4, which has them clinging to a spot around the middle of the ladder.

Altona is reeling after being upset by Albion by three points on home soil on Saturday in one of the shocks of the Western Region Football League division 1 campaign so far. The Vikings, one of the pre-season tips to shake up the premiership race, are in seventh place with one win in five games. All four of the Vikings losses have come by single digits. The Vikings led by 17 points at three-quarter time, but Albion ran over the top of them with four goals to one in the last quarter. Spotswood improved to 5-0 after a 128-point hammering of Wyndhamvale at McLean Reserve. Lachie Fairley booted seven goals for the Woodsmen, while Bryce Williams, Tom Langlands and Nayef Hamad stood out. In division 2, Yarraville-Seddon powered up in the second half for an 85-point win over West Footscray at Shorten Reserve. North Footscray had a comfortable 112-point win over Albanvale at Robert Bruce Reserve. In division 3, Parkside notched up a 59-point win over North Sunshine at Henry Turner Reserve. Braybrook beat Sanctuary Lakes by 37 points at Pennell Reserve and it was a tough day at the office for Laverton, which lost by 127 points to Tarneit at home. Williamstown sure meant business in an 88-point thrashing of the winless Coburg Lions in the Victorian Football League at Burbank Oval on Sunday. Stinging after back-to-back losses, the Seagulls came out breathing fire with a seven-goal-to-nil opening term with the breeze. The Lions hit back with five unanswered goals of their own before half-time, but that only spurred the Seagulls to bigger and better things in the third quarter. Williamstown piled on a breathtaking 11 consecutive goals in the third term to rip the game apart. The Seagulls had an element of surprise about them with 12 individual goalkickers, including three each to best-on-ground Sam Dunnell and Brett Bewley and two each to Lachlan Schultz, Ben Cavarra, Mitch Norton and Willie Wheeler. Dunell finished with 30 disposals, 13 marks and three tackles. Ruckman Nick Meese was super with 51 hit-outs to go with 12 disposals and 11 tackles. Williamstown moved back into the top eight ahead of Saturday’s trip to North Ballarat. Meanwhile, reigning premiers Footscray has come back from six goals down at quarter-time to beat Richmond in the curtain-raiser to the AFL match at Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The Bulldogs snuck home by seven points in a thriller, thanks largely to six goals and 12 marks from key forward Jack Redpath, who is on the comeback trail after a serious knee injury. The Dogs had plenty of ball winners, with Mitch Wallis racking up 30 possessions. Footscray’s next assignment will be its toughest to date when it faces ladder leader Port Melbourne at North Port Oval on Saturday.
