Sports star powers up

(Damjan Janevski)

A Seddon athlete with an uplifting tale is taking her talents back to the world stage. Margherita Coppolino will join Team Australia at the World Dwarf Games in Canada in August, hoping to add more medals to the gold and silver she collected in the sport of boccia in 2013. As well as backing up in boccia, Coppolino will be compete in power lifting for the first time. “I’m turning 57 at the games, I thought I would take up power lifting as a challenge,” she said. “I train three times a week at Exercise Room in Footscray – the weight training has been really good for me.” Coppolino is hoping to raise the profile of people with short stature in a bid to convince sports authorities to take their wish to be included in organised sports more seriously. “We have short-statured people who actually run marathons, as well as being involved in swimming and power lifting and basketball,” she said. “Sport is really important for people feeling isolation or with mental health issues – it has pulled me out of some very dark places.” The seventh World Dwarf Games will be held from August 5-12 in Ontario, Canada. of the school’s facilities were more than 100 years old. “The school’s facilities are in need of an upgrade and this budget contribution will help get this work started,” he said. Principal Jackie Green said the school had not received budget funding for many years. She said the money would kick-start a plan to refurbish classrooms, demolish and replace one of the old timber buildings and build a new gymnasium. “Our school community has been growing a bit over the past few years and, with the school council, we’ve been working on a plan to upgrade our facilities,” she said. “The funding’s going to give us the opportunity to upgrade those older buildings into a more modern

learning environment.” Under a $2 billion boost first announced in December, Footscray will gain four new police officers while Altona North station will be upgraded. Inspector Michelle Young said a new police station within Hobsons Bay would be a community asset. “Although very much in the early phases of planning, I’m confident that the new police station will be designed to ensure that it meets Victoria Police needs now and heading into the future,” she said. The M80 ring road will be widened from end to end by 2021 and the Princes Freeway Bridge over Railway Avenue at Altona Meadows will be upgraded.

Footscray Hospital will be rebuilt from scratch on the back of a $50 million funding allocation in the 2017-18 state budget. The funds, announced on Tuesday, will be used to develop a business case, start design work and purchase nearby land if it is required. Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the hospital no longer met the needs of a rapidly growing community. “The business case will identify the best way to deliver a new hospital for Footscray – either a rebuild from the ground up on the existing site, or on a new location,” she said.

Footscray MP Marsha Thomson welcomed the funding, while Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the rebuild was well overdue. Western Health board chair Bronwyn Pike said rebuilding the hospital had long been a top priority for the community. “Footscray Hospital has been at the heart of our community for 60 years, and so we are thrilled that it will soon become the world-class, modern facility that our patients deserve,” she said. Urgent works will also be carried out on the existing hospital, built in the 1950s. The budget also delivers $1.4 million to Spotswood Primary School for the first stage of a $4 million upgrade. Council approves Dutch treat By Benjamin Millar Two Maribyrnong councillors travelling to the Netherlands to study cycling have denied claims the $20,000 trip is a junket. Mayor Catherine Cumming and deputy mayor Sarah Carter will join an “active transport” study tour in June, and have argued the trip is important despite the pair not being regular cyclists. Facing a social media backlash, Cr Cumming cited the recent deaths of two cyclists in Maribyrnong as her trigger for the tour, while Cr Carter said the council needed to understand where it should direct cycling spending.

In moving a motion at last Wednesday’s council meeting to support the June 5-9 study tour, Cr Sarah Carter said the council has been underspending compared to other inner-Melbourne councils. “We have been criticised, and rightly so, for our lacklustre investment in cycling infrastructure,” she said. “We need to learn from the experience of other communities which have achieved great success.” Cr Carter said Maribyrnong is the only inner-Melbourne council not to have sent councillors or staff on the tour and that it would mark the first council-paid overseas trip for either councillor.

Cr Cuc Lam, who seconded the motion, said she would like to see a public presentation on the trip’s findings when the councillors returned. Cr Mia McGregor said she commended the motion, but acknowledged there has been community backlash against the trip. “I would very much hope to see we make a significant investment and that they come back with some very strong best-practice solutions.” Speaking against the motion, Cr Martin Zakharov said it was debatable whether there was value in sending two councillors instead of a council officer. “Two years ago it was in Adelaide and it’s

a shame no-one thought about going to this when it was in Adelaide, at a significantly lower cost,” he said. “My concern is that $20,000 is quite a lot of money … whether this is the best way of gaining this information is debatable.” Mayor Catherine Cumming said the study tour came across her desk a week before mother-of-two Arzu Baglar was killed while cycling in Yarraville. “Then the death occurred and I felt compelled to do this. I thought as a mother of five, as well as being mayor, how do I actually stop other people dying? “I know this is not a junket.”

Here comes the bride, and another ... Cherished memories will be on display in an exhibition of wedding dresses at Williamstown’s Holy Trinity Anglican Church for Mother’s Day. Organiser, Williamstown’s Barbara Phoenix, said she was inspired after taking a group of local women to Rippon Lea for an exhibition of gowns through the ages. “I asked casually if any of them still had their wedding dresses,” she said. “I was very surprised to hear many did, so ever since I’ve wanted to find a way to display them.” The exhibition will be held on Mother’s Day weekend as part of the National Trust Heritage Festival. “Our earliest dress is being loaned to us by the Williamstown Historical Society and was worn on January 1, 1900, and we have dresses from every decade from then until the present day,” Ms Phoenix said. “I’ve been shocked by how many people have become so excited about getting their dresses into the exhibition. “We’ve got dresses that were handmade during the ’40s after the war and after the Depression. “Some of the dresses are not in great shape but it’s the fabrics and the textures that are really lovely.” Visitors to the exhibition, from 2-5pm on May 13 and 14, will be able to take home a piece of wedding cake, and enjoy live music and refreshments. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 concession and free for children, with proceeds going to the Cancer Council. Goya Dmytryshchak

Goods stolen in sex shop raid Desperate burglars have broken into a Williamstown North adult store in the early hours of Wednesday. The thieves smashed their way into Erotique Adult Centre in Kororoit Creek Road at 3.45am. Senior Detective Constable Rob Luri,of the Altona North crime investigation unit said about $2000 worth of items were stolen. “It appears that offenders have broken into the store and stolen a variety of sex items from the store and then left. “They just smashed their way in via the glass front panelling.” He said it did not appear the burglary was linked to other crimes involving the theft of synthetic cannabis. “We’ve still got to gather evidence as far as the CCTV in the area, but as far as the items stolen it’s just basically general variety sex toys.” A representative of the store declined to comment. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Safe landing for Footscray icon By Benjamin Millar

Luke Donnellan, Parks Victoria chief executive Bill Jackson and Marsha Thomson at Henderson House Landing. (Benjamin Millar)

The iconic Henderson House Landing in Footscray will be rebuilt from scratch following an $800,000 commitment from the state government. The Maribyrnong River wharf has been closed to the public for more than a year due to safety concerns, following its partial collapse last February. Last June about 100 people attended a public rally organised by the Footscray Riverside Action Group (FRAG) urging the government to rebuild the wharf.

Visiting the site on Friday, Ports Minister Luke Donnellan said he would like to see local residents, recreational fishers and boaters enjoying the landing again. “We’re delighted that Henderson House Landing will be restored to its previous condition – preserving such an iconic connection to the river,” he said. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said wood from the collapsed wharf will be made available for local artists to recycle into a public sculpture reflecting the site’s heritage. “We all know the beauty of this part of the river and this is a hub of activity with the arts

centre just up there,” she said. “For me this is about saying that being outdoors, being able to get together as a community is so crucially important.” FRAG president Sharman Williamson said it had been a long wait but the group is happy with the outcome. “Especially now, we feel with all the construction that is going up and about 4000 new residents, this green space and the access to the river is more important than ever,” she said. The rebuild will begin in July and is expected to be complete by February.

When history speaks Former premier and chair of the ANZAC Centenary Committee, Ted Baillieu is among speakers visiting Williamstown this month, as a touring exhibition recounting personal stories from WWI makes its last stop. The Writing the War exhibition, at Williamstown library from May 5 to June 25, features the stories told through letters and photos of seven ordinary Australians: a nurse, bank clerk, farmer, sports master, journalist, artist and activist. Mr Baillieu will give a talk on WWI commander, General Sir John Monash, at Williamstown Town Hall on May 23. “We’re telling a story about Sir John Monash but we’re also trying to highlight that anybody and everybody has connections to our original Anzacs,” Mr Baillieu said. Mr Baillieu’s grandfather, Captain William Johnstone Knox, was an artillery officer who received the Military Cross.

“My grandfather survived Gallipoli and survived Fromelles but was killed in the battle of Ypres in August 1917, so it’s coming up to the centenary of his death,” Mr Baillieu said. Also speaking in Williamstown is award-winning historian Ross McMullin, talking about Australia’s worst 24 hours on the Fromelles battlefields. Williamstown library is hosting sessions for people to trace their WWI family history and digitally preserve their photos. Williamstown Historical Society president Brian Haynes will lead walks through the suburb’s streets visiting the former homes of some of the local WWI soldiers. Fully at home in Williamstown Walter and Brenda were never exactly friends. They didn’t see themselves as having much in common. Walter preferred smoking on his verandah, while Brenda spent afternoons sharing a cuppa with the ladies. Danny Stevens, manager of Wintringham Williamstown aged care hostel, takes up the story. “During the years at the hostel, however, Walter and Brenda quietly learned to respect each other’s contribution to the lively community each called home,” he says.

‘‘

Walter and Brenda learned to respect each other’s contribution

’’

- Danny Stevens “Brenda was the first to laugh and congratulate Walter when he started to dress up as Santa at the hostel Christmas parties. And Walter shed genuine tears of sorrow when Brenda died after a short illness. “She had grown up, purchased a home and raised a family in Williamstown before moving to Williamstown hostel, where she was happy to still feel part of the wider Williamstown community. “Her family were so impressed by the care she’d received at the Williamstown hostel, they donated an amazing formal fountain, which now adorns the entrance to the hostel.” Wintringham Williamstown is unique among the stable of Wintringham facilities dotted around Melbourne. It was established in partnership with the Williamstown council in 1993, with the agreement that local people would always be given preferential admission.

About half of the Wintringham Williamstown residents come from Wintringham’s traditional target group older Victorians who might otherwise face homelessness. “Walter had been in this cohort,” Mr Stevens adds, “though he has called the Williamstown

hostel his home for so long now that any sense of insecurity or impending homelessness has long receded.” The hostel is renowned for its lively community and the generous dimensions of its units. “We’d like the people of Williamstown to

think of Wintringham hostel as an aged care option they may consider that will enable them to continue to live in their local community,” Mr Stevens says. A tour can be organised with Wintringham Williamstown manager Danny Stevens by calling 9399 9833.

Distress in Little Africa By Benjamin Millar Artist impression of 32 Maddox Street, Newport. (Supplied)

Childcare hub wins VCAT nod

(Joe Mastroianni)

Assaults, foul language and rampant drug use are destroying efforts to revitalise Footscray’s Little Africa, according to traders. African Australian Small Business Association president Mohamed Abdulrahman said that despite the best efforts of business owners, the situation had been spiralling out of control in recent months as pleas for help fell on deaf ears. “There is a big issue with people using needles and shooting up,” he said. “We believe Footscray needs to take its fair share of the burden, but at the same time we strongly believe more needs to be done for safety.” Mr Abdulrahman (pictured) said particular concerns were held about children being exposed to drug use and drinking around the business hub on Nicholson Street. “There is a family day care centre in there and we have serious concerns about the safety,” he said. “It’s really scary that people are shooting their drugs in that area. “They are not locals – they come from other suburbs. They attract each other to the area, exchanging information about where they got it cheap and that sort of thing.” A petition signed by more than 170 traders and customers was presented to last week’s Maribyrnong Council meeting claims businesses are being harmed as people avoid the area. “We are local traders, ratepayers and voters who expect immediate action and Aussie Fair go!” the petition says. Mr Abdulrahman said the issue required better co-operation between traders, police, health providers and Maribyrnong council.

“I think the council need a better policy,” he said. “I feel that they are not doing everything they can to support the new demographic and seeing the potential of newly arrived migrants. “They could be doing more about the needles and the cleanliness and tidiness of the street.

I love you too!

I love you mum!

They have spent a lot on the graffiti, but it seems like they are totally ignoring this other issue – that is why the petition was sent to them.” Maribyrnong councillors resolved to request the chief executive consider the petition and determine the appropriate response.

A two-storey childcare centre in the midst of residential homes has been approved on appeal to the state’s planning tribunal. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal granted Basic Element Pty Ltd a permit to build a centre for 122 children at 32-34 Maddox Road. Twenty six basement parking spaces are provided. Hobsons Bay council last August refused the proposal on grounds including the centre being inconsistent with a general residential zone, that it was an overdevelopment, would unreasonably impact residential amenity and had inadequate parking. Residents also objected saying it would lead to overlooking, overshadowing, noise, on-street car parking and traffic. VCAT member Geoffrey Rundell said a child care centre was acceptable in a residential area. “I am satisfied that the childcare centre before me would be highly likely to serve local needs,” he said. The centre will operate from 6.30am-7pm Monday to Friday. Goya Dmytryshchak

Male players Marco Rojas, Alan Baro and Mitch Austin (pictured), along with female star Gulcan Koca, put 60 grade 1 and 2 pupils through their paces in a recent clinic at St Augustine’s Primary School. The school visit was won by parent Joel Hitt, an employee of Melbourne Victory energy partner AGL Energy, which ran a competition. The stars stayed late at the school following the clinic to answer questions and sign autographs for their young fans. Benjamin Millar

Footscray back in the frame with new cinema Decades after the closure of its grand theatres, the stars are aligning for a permanent return of cinematic screenings to Footscray. Michael Smith, owner of Yarraville’s Sun Theatre, has confirmed he plans to open a new cinema complex in the heart of Footscray as part of the redevelopment of the former Forges site on Albert Street. Mr Smith said the new cinema will feature up to eight screens within the Banco Group development as approved by Maribyrnong council at last week’s council meeting. “We have been in discussions with [director Mario LoGiudice] from Banco Group for two years now,” he said. “We are really excited by the proposal. It’s a new building so it won’t be quite like The Sun, but we really think we can do something that is pretty special and will have its own feel.” Mr Smith said rather than simply double up with the Sun Theatre, the new cinema will provide greater flexibility. “We will have eight screens at Yarraville and eight screens at Footscray, 16 screens altogether, which is going to give us the opportunity to increase the range of films we show, to show more arthouse films,” he said. The cinema will be part of a $70 million complex that includes a supermarket, retail spaces, 120-place nursing home and more than 200 apartments. Mr Smith is hopeful the project will breathe new life into Footscray in the way The Sun Theatre proved a catalyst for Yarraville’s renewal when it re-opened in 2003. “At the time a lot of people asked ‘why would you want to open in Yarraville?’ but we have loved that journey,” he said.

LOVE. FITNESS. HAPPINESS. NO JUDGMENTS! COME

Mr Smith anticipates the cinema could be open as soon as 2019, but concedes a project of this size could take longer than expected. However he has more immediate plans to fast-track the return of cinema to Footscray. “Next summer and the summer after, we are going to whet the appetite of people with some outdoor screenings on the rooftop of the building next to the site,” he said.

Truck warnings plan for bridge

Grade 6 pupils Alessandra, Hannah and Sean with principal Jim Sheedy. (Joe Mastroianni)

School stamps its place By Goya Dmytryshchak St Mary’s Primary School in Williamstown has the rare honour of having its own postmark for the month of May to mark its 175th anniversary. Principal Jim Sheedy and children on Monday visited the post office in Douglas Parade to mail the first envelope stamped with the shield emblem of the state’s oldest continuously operating school. Mr Sheedy said that it was the first time a Williamstown school had its own postmark.

10 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 3, 2017

Historically, Williamstown postmarks have all been naval themed, with Prince William being the sole exception. “Kids need to know their place and they need to know their story,” he said. “Our story as a school is very significant in the history of Williamstown - as with all of our schools. “The month we were formed, the principal of the day observed the Indigenous community meeting down at the botanic gardens because they had to leave their country because of the invasion that they were confronted with.

“Mary MacKillop was born the same year that our school was established and then she was here all those years later putting her sisters in the school ... I have copies of her diaries related to the school. “We have fire drills now - in the Second World War they had air-raid drills where they jumped into bomb shelters that had been dug on Maclean Reserve [opposite the school].” An open day, for past and present students and the wider community, will be held at the school on May 21 from 12.30pm-4pm.

New alarms, traffic signals and variable signs will be installed on the approach to the notorious Napier Street Bridge in a bid to cut the number of over-height trucks striking the Footscray railway overpass. The state government will spend $1.1 million on a safety upgrade that will include alarms that notify authorities and automatic number plate technology to capture the details of drivers disobeying the four-metre height limit. The government is seeking expressions of interest to develop new technology that will alert drivers as they approach the bridge and direct them towards alternate routes. There are already 28 advance warning signs and five height detection devices around the bridge, which has been struck 67 times since 2005. The announcement comes after another peak-hour crash last Monday in which a container truck blocked outbound traffic and caused extensive delays on the train network. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group secretary Martin Wurt said the funding showed the government knew there was a problem, but he argued the solution was cutting the number of trucks using the route by directing them to the freeway network. “I don’t know whether more bells and whistles will stop this happening,” he said. Heavy metal festival By Benjamin Millar Californian artist blacksmith Shawn Lovell will join some of Australia’s most talented hot metal workers when the 2017 Blacksmith’s Festival fires up in Footscray next weekend. The free family-friendly festival on the banks of the Maribyrnong River will feature blacksmithing demonstrations, talks, live

music and fresh food, along with plenty of Belgian and local beers. One of country’s largest gatherings of blacksmiths and metal artists, the May 13-14 event will be held at Footscray’s Waterside Metal Art Studio, hosted by the Waterside Blacksmithing and Metal Art Association. San Francisco-based Lovell will be showing

why she is considered one of the most talented full-time female artist blacksmiths in the US, plying her craft alongside local artists Estebaan Dante, Bruce Rasmussen and Jack Wylestone. Waterside Blacksmithing and Metal Art Association president Steve Phillips said the festival also aimed to share ideas in the blacksmithing and metal artist community.

“Through this festival, we bring some of Australia’s finest artist blacksmiths to Footscray to provide the general public a unique opportunity to see how blacksmithing is now being incorporated in the generation of contemporary metal art.” The official launch will take place at 5pm Saturday, including the ignition of a six-metre high fireball from the depths of the Maribyrnong River. See live demonstrations, hand-forged bubble blowers and live music by four-piece band La Rumba, from 4.30-6pm Saturday. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the council is pleased to support festivals that celebrate the community’s rich culture and creativity. “This is one of the largest gatherings of blacksmiths in Australia, so don’t miss out on opportunity to celebrate an age-old practice that has been all but lost in the modern day society,” Cr Cumming said.

Homeless homes launch on hold By Benjamin Millar Plans to build almost 60 new units to house the homeless in Footscray and Maidstone have been delayed as a group of residents take their fight against the project to VCAT. Maribyrnong councillors last week granted unanimous planning approval for the final three of the nine Ballarat Road sites slated by Launch Housing to house 57 new relocatable homes. Launch chief executive Tony Keenan said everything was in place to proceed with the $5 million project, but the service would

wait on the outcome of the VCAT appeal. “We are very happy that the councillors unanimously supported the council recommendation, and have been contacted by a number of residents who are supportive of this project,” he said. “We are very confident the planning applications meet all the guidelines. There have been a small minority of residents who have been opposed and we have taken on board any legitimate planning concerns.” Resident Katherine Gow told last week’s council meeting the entire planning process should be restarted as Launch had created

a false impression of a partnership with the council by using the council’s logo on its advertising material. Mayor Catherine Cumming conceded the use of the logo was unfortunate but assured objectors the decision to support the project has been made on purely planning grounds. Mr Keenan said he rejected suggestions made by opponents that the housing was of poor quality and would lead to the stigmatisation of residents. “It’s designed by an award-winning architect and we have listened to all the issues that have been raised,” he said.

“I think people haven’t taken the time to understand that it’s not temporary housing; it’s relocatable but it will be there for as long as we have the land. “When you are doing any housing project for people who are poor and struggling, it brings out this opposition, but I’m surprised to find it in Footscray.” Mr Keenan said Launch was keen to start building the units and will use the project as a model for under-used land across Victoria. “It’s a very important pilot, we have a housing crisis in this city and initiatives like this are taking place around the world.”

Busy bees hit local park All things creepy and crawly went under the magnifying glass at the recent Bug Detectives Nature Play school holiday event at Pipemakers Park. More than 70 children and parents came together to learn about frogs, bugs, birds and all creatures great and small that call the riverside Maribyrnong park home. Sessions included a talk about river and bushland plants and animals, followed by activities including bug hunting with jars, field guides and magnifying glasses. The event was held as part of Nature Play week, an event encouraging children to reconnect with nature and the outdoors. It was run as part of Maribyrnong Council’s environmental education program, and was in partnership with Leap into Nature with support from Melbourne Water and Green Army members.

Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the council is committed to environmental education, including teaching the community about the importance of biodiversity and conservation. “The earlier we can get people interested in these topics the better which is why activities like Bug Detectives are so important, not to mention fun,” she said. “It makes sense then that we encourage children to spend time outside, for their benefit and the benefit of our environment.” Bug Detectives will return to local libraries for the July school holidays. Truck ban, space bid in limbo By Benjamin Millar Spotswood residents seeking more open space and a ban on trucks as a trade-off for the impact of the West Gate Tunnel project are being left in the dark over whether their wishes will be met. Star Weekly last month reported 24/7 truck bans would be introduced in Footscray and Yarraville once the $5.5 billion project was completed in 2022. The toll road project includes twin tunnels beneath Yarraville, from the West Gate Freeway

to the Maribyrnong River, and an elevated freeway above Footscray Road to CityLink and the city. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan told Star Weekly it was too soon to consider the further truck bans wanted by Spotswood residents. “Everybody wants truck bans right now,” he said. “But what do I do – say, ‘Don’t worry we’ll just get rid of industry’, and wish it away? “We can’t just suddenly bring industry to its knees, because it means employment for people; that’s the difficulty.”

Mr Donnellan said it was easy for people to get angry very quickly, but the issue was complex. “We’ve got to build the infrastructure, then we’ll look at the truck bans, then we’ll look at what other measures we need to undertake,” he said. “People have got to be patient. We’ll work through those things. “There’s only one party offering a solution and that’s the Labor Party. “Some people are offering a protest,

others are offering bugger all, but we’ll do it properly.” Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland, who addressed a community forum hosted by Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group last Thursday night, said Transurban’s new toll road would attract thousands more trucks onto local streets. “That’s great for Transurban’s bottom line, but what about our community? If you think the truck problem is bad now, the worst is yet to come.”

Pub’s pig factor a win for schools A Footscray pub is ploughing profits from a pork-themed party into a pair of local primary schools. The Plough Hotel raised $2400 from its recent Melbourne Food and Wine festival event, Pigs, Pots and Pinots. Chef Scott Thomas cooked a menu of porky goodness using Western Plains pigs matched with pots and pints from West City Brewing and pinot from Shadowfax Wines. Plough manager Ben Foster said the event was a celebration of the western suburbs. “We raised $1200 each for Footscray and Footscray West Primary Schools,” he said. The Plough will host a Good Beer Week event, The Great Curry Beer Match, with local cooks and brewers cooking eight curries with matched beers on Saturday, May 20. New Aitken Street bid rejected By Goya Dmytryshchak

Plans for 27 Aitken Street, Williamstown. (Supplied)

Hobsons Bay council has rejected plans for a four-storey, 27-dwelling apartment block at 27 Aitken Street in Williamstown. Aitken Properties Pty Ltd had applied to demolish the existing single-level industrial building to develop the site. The plans include 26 basement parking spaces. Eighty one objections were received by the council, with the leading issues relating to

neighbourhood character, heritage, height and bulk, parking, traffic, overshadowing, overlooking, noise and internal amenity concerns. A previous application for the site was refused by the council and subsequently rejected on appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) in September. A special planning committee comprising three councillors last Thursday was split. Councillors Angela Altair and

Michael Grech voted against the plans, while Cr Jonathon Marsden voted in favour. Grounds for refusal included the planned building being an overdevelopment of the site and having “unacceptable” car parking allocation. The committee ruled that the proposal was “inconsistent with heritage provisions in the Hobsons Bay planning scheme”. The developer will appeal the council’s refusal at VCAT.

Prime land sells for $6.5 million A high-profile western suburb investment bought 11 years ago by a consortium including the late Herman Rockefeller, who died following a notorious 2010 homicide, has sold off-market. At 20-42 Simcock Avenue, Spotswood, the 1.56 hectare block is beneath the West Gate Bridge on its descent towards Williamstown Road. For years the property has been the Spotswood Terminal of Cootes Transport, controlled by Mark Rowsthorn’s trucking company McAleese, which went into voluntary administration last August. It sold for $6.5 million as a development site to another consortium including directors of Victoria’s Raine and Horne Commercial business who are also builders. MY PLACE Portugese-born Joaquim De Amorim, “Jack” to his mates, has grown trees every place he has lived. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

I moved to Australia – to Sydney – in 1983 from Porto in Portugal. I moved to Altona Meadows about three years ago – in June/July it will be three years. When I moved to Australia I had to start working straight away so I didn’t get to go to school. Now I have a chance to come back to school here at Laverton Community Hub to learn English better. What do you like about this area? I like that the train station is there and it is so quick to get to the city from here. I like coming to the Laverton Community Hub to learn English. What I like about living in Altona Meadows is that it’s a quiet place with good parks and good shops. What would you change? Nothing! I have six grandchildren here – my daughter is here. What’s your favourite cafe/eatery? I like the Italian place near Central Square, La Porchetta. I like it because it has everything, not just pizza, and it has places for the kids to play.

Can you tell us about the workshop you are in today about growing your own food? I think it is very good and interesting for the people here. I grow food at home myself – and lots of flowers too. My wife likes to grow flowers. When I was born in the country my mother had chickens and we grew potatoes – every year we planted potatoes. I had chickens when I lived in Sydney too but they have too much smell and bring in flies, so we don’t have them here. In Sydney I used to have a rooster – but he used to call at 5am and the neighbours were not very happy about that. What is something people would be surprised to know about you? I have planted trees at every place I have lived in – I have planted six trees at my house now – fig, lemon, olive, two passionfruit vines and a tree – I don’t know the name in English but my wife uses the leaves to make tea. It smells very good. Hobsons Bay council is hosting a free three-hour workshop, including lunch, about how to grow your own fruit and vegetables at home. It is from 10am-1pm at Laverton Community Hub. Register with Suzette at srodoreda@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir is not one to horse around about burgers… Based on its proximity to Flemington racecourse and location on Racecourse Road, this flashy new burger joint – right opposite the Doutta Galla pub – has enthusiastically embraced a theme based around horse racing. From the name and onwards, it’s all very horsey. There’s garish, internal neon signs proclaiming “feeling lucky?” and “burgers so good you’d put your house on”. The burgers themselves sport the names of famous steeds of the past. And the staff are all wearing T-shirts telling you they’re stewards – just in case you miss the drift. It all seems a bit, well, lame to me – but then, I’m in no way a fan of horse racing. The lack of subtlety doesn’t stop with the repeated racing motifs – the place is bright and loud, the music overbearingly so. But I’m probably not in the focus demographic for such a place. It’s been open just a little while and has been busy the whole time, Uber bags by the dozen heading out the door from day one. They’ve even had to hang up the “sold out” sign on occasion. We do the burgers and sides routine with happy results. The Phar Lap ($11) is one step up from the basic cheeseburger (the Saintly, $8). Phar Lap tastes fine with its 120g patty, cheese, Straight Six sauce, pickles, onion, lettuce and tomato.

STRAIGHT SIX Address: 336 Racecourse Road, Flemington Phone: 9376 2333 But it’s made for those of medium appetite only – it’s gone in a flash. If you’re wanting something with more heft, go for the Think Big ($14). The double 100g patties, double cheese, excellent bacon, spicy Straight Six sauce, jalapenos and onion combine to create a beaut burger. A small serve of beer-battered onion rings is generous for the $4 asking price. They’re well cooked, but oh-so-verydecadently rich … more like beer-battered batter than onion rings. They’re good, though, if that’s your thing. The chips – a small serve for $4 – are also a fine deal. Perhaps it’s all about – or much about – timing and location. And perhaps pizzazz, too. A year or so ago, a burger enterprise arose further along Racecourse Road, folding quietly after a few months having made no impression whatsoever. Straight Six, by comparison, has been an instant hit. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

21 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 3, 2017

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Soak up the variety of island style Oahu is home to much more than Waikiki’s ‘Gold Coast’, as Alexandra Laskie discovers. Thousands of travellers land at Honolulu and make a beeline for Waikiki to shack-up at a hotel for their entire Hawaiian sojourn. Considering the cost of hiring a car and, for Australian tourists, the mental hurdle of driving on the right-hand-side of the road, this approach makes sense. But to fall in love with diamond-shaped Oahu, Hawaii’s third largest island and home to the state capitol, Honolulu, you need a car. And the popular choice among holidaymakers appears to be a sexy, convertible Ford Mustang. Maybe it’s got to do with the “When in Rome” philosophy. Whatever it is, they dominate Honolulu airport’s hire carpark and they really are a lot of fun. Getting around the city is relatively easy, outside of evening peak hours. But be warned, rush hour traffic in Honolulu is the third worst in the US, according to locals. The Kalanianaole Highway takes drivers from Waikiki to the island’s beautiful beaches along the south-east coast. Within half an hour you’ll arrive at Sandy Beach, with its shore dumpers, turquoise waters and food trucks serving ahi poke – diced fresh tuna sashimi on rice with “special sauce”. Hanauma Bay is nearby. It’s incredibly popular with tourists owing to its photogenic crescent-shaped bay, first glimpsed from high above on a cliff. But you have to get there early to secure a car spot, because once the carpark is full, the beach is closed to fresh tourists for the rest of the day.

environmental studies and education programs. Beaches farther along the coastline are just as beautiful, albeit without the reef. A trip to the island wouldn’t be complete without checking out North Shore, known for

For years it was one of the most visited beaches in Hawaii, but it became a victim of its own beauty. The reef’s deterioration finally led authorities to intervene, first with a smoking ban in 1995 and then, in 1997, a visitor fee was introduced to pay for beach maintenance,

its laid-back vibe and massive swells only the likes of Kelly Slater can conquer. To get there from Waikiki, head towards Pearl City (H1), then take the H2, and then follow the signs towards Haleiwa, North Shore’s shopping hub.

Opposite page: Gorgeous Hanauma Bay has long been popular with tourists. (Alexandra Laskie)

This page: Surfjack Hotel boasts dishes from in-house restaurant Mahina & Sun’s, classic 1960s design and North Shore surf culture. (Pictures: supplied)

This little town is lined with plantation-era timber buildings painted in bright colours. It’s a good stop for lunch – people line up for a plate of garlic and butter-sautéed shrimp from trucks packed on the south side of the town, or for a shave ice at Matsumoto’s.

To see the swells, keep heading north to the famed Banzai Pipeline, or “Pipeline” to locals, where the average wave is about three metres. Turtle Bay Resort has a reputation as one of Oahu’s best hotels. It sits on prime real estate, with direct access to bay and surf beaches.

There are two golf courses on site, two pools, tennis courts and six restaurants. If you want to wake up listening to the sounds of gentle waves, book a beach cottage. The only obstacles between you and the sand will be a few scattered palm trees and hammocks.

TRAVEL

Waikiki’s “Gold Coast” feel may not appeal to everyone, but the neighbourhood has the widest range of options when it comes to hotels, eating out and shopping. One of the newest additions to the hotel scene in Waikiki is Surfjack Hotel. It’s housed in a 1960s Modernist building that has been refurbished and incorporates the best design elements of the era and North Shore beach culture. You won’t find it along Waikiki’s bustling beach strip, but a few blocks back in sleepy Lewers Street. It provides a welcome respite from the hordes of tourists. Whoever designed the pool had Instagram in mind. Mosaic tiles spell out, “Wish you were here” – surely a photo many guests have snapped from their balconies and sent to someone back home. One of the island’s best-loved chefs, Ed Kenney, heads the in-house restaurant Mahina & Sun’s, which serves inventive dishes such as skipjack tuna risotto using locally sourced and organic produce. Mr Kenny’s three other Honolulu establishments have almost taken over an intersection in Kaimuki, a sleepy residential neighbourhood a 10-minute drive from Waikiki. He’s made this spot a great place to come for breakfast (Kaimuki Suprette) or dinner (Mud Hen Water or Town). His style of food celebrates local Hawaiian cuisine. If dining at Mud Hen Water, the poi is a must. It’s made by pounding baked and fermented taro root until it turns into a watery paste. It’s a staple of most Hawaiian diets and is often eaten with rice. Rumour has it that the Obama family has purchased a holiday house on the island. If it’s good enough for a former president, it should be good enough for the rest of us.

NEWPORT 195 Blackshaws Road, 3015 RT Edgar Williamstown: 9399 9888

Price: $800,000 – $880,000

Blackshaws Road has gone through a metamorphosis. New builds line the road from start to finish, possibly due to its proximity to Newport Lakes and Newport’s town centre. The 1950s era shopping strips are now tenanted by artists, cafes and restaurants. Newport’s popularity has left no street untouched by the march of culture. This property is a perfect example of the new face of this well-known road. It’s in the middle of it all and is sleek and modern. Large white high-gloss tiles have been chosen throughout to provide a sense of space and the striking white-on-white decor

feels almost futuristic. The outdoor spaces bring nature back, creating a balance that is understated and low-maintenance living personified. As you enter, the first of two living rooms in this clever floor plan is to your left, followed by the main bedroom which has its own private and functional mini-courtyard. There’s a walk-through wardrobe that leads to the en suite. French doors in the bedroom open out to the courtyard space, giving it a sanctuary feel. Two further carpeted bedrooms follow, both with built-in wardrobes. A family-style laundry, bright central

bathroom and a powder room are off to the right. Immediately before the main living room at the rear of the property there is a contemporary study space with a custom-made desk that receives plenty of natural light. Through to the open-plan kitchen/ family-meals space and the kitchen has stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances and plenty of storage. It overlooks the inviting second living room that is flanked by dual courtyard spaces which adds to the sense of spaciousness. By creating the main outdoor space to

O

nce exclusive to Mini’s SUV range, all-wheel-drive is now expanding across the Mini lineup with the rorty John Cooper Works Clubman. Like a Mini for grown ups, the Clubman sits on a larger footprint than the regular hatch, freeing up more interior space. But the playful Mini uniqueness remains, including rear barn doors and one of the best-known interiors in the industry. As the flagship of the second-generation Clubman range, the John Cooper Works brings more power and torque than the already impressive Cooper S. An extra 29kW and 70Nm, in fact, which combined with the added all-wheel-drive grip results in a 0-100km/h sprint of just 6.3 seconds – an impressive 1.2 seconds quicker than the Cooper S auto. Priced from $53,900 (plus on-roads), the JCW is at the high end of the hot hatch market, but it’s stuffed full of premium equipment such as Harman Kardon hi-fi, adaptive cruise control, and leather trim. Hop in and the low-set seats put you into a sporty driving position just like every other Mini variant, but look back and there’s a family-friendly rear seat and big boot. The design is Mini through and through, with a huge central display dominating the dash, although the speedo and tacho have been relocated in front of the driver. A chubby steering wheel and alloy pedals turn up the sporty appeal and are matched with JCW-specific side sills, exhaust tips, 19-inch wheels, and grille blades on the outside. A quick blast around the block reveals a very different character to the JCW hatch. The Clubman is no less playful, but it fires from standstill like a rocket, and bolts out of corners with none of the grip-searching

habits of the front-wheel-drive hatch. The engine note hints at the JCW’s intent, and the suspension, resolutely firm across choppy surfaces, reinforces the JCW Clubman’s hot hatch positioning. Although an eight-speed automatic will be

the default choice for Australian-delivered Clubmans, an optional six-speed manual (as fitted to the car driven here) is also available. Mini has certainly enhanced the JCW formula with the addition of all-wheel-drive. This isn’t just a boring, safe and stable hatch,

SPORT Falcons falter as they search for right mix only playing a half by the Netball Victoria. Tahnysha Salanoa didn’t play after being part of the Victorian under-19 team at the national championships. “It was costly not having Steph,” Lind said. “She’s not a contracted player with Vixens, but they only allowed her to play a half which was really disappointing. “We played Steph in the first quarter and started well. We should have left her on and played out the first half and really built a lead.” With limited goalers, the Falcons introduced Sri Lankan Tharjini Sivalingam who arrived in the country the previous week. Sivalingam, at 208cm tall, is known as the world’s tallest netballer. Lind had hoped to play her in division 1 for a few weeks to allow her to settle into the Australian style of netball, but instead she was exposed in the championship division.

“We had to run Kath [Knott] at goal attack with Jini and Kath’s not a goal attack,” Lind said. “The girls really haven’t trained with Jini and don’t know how she leads and likes the ball. Molly [Jovic] and Emily [Post] were learning how to feed her. “Once we work that out she’ll be a major threat. “We ended up putting Maggie [Lind] into goal attack. That worked better as they’d played together on the Saturday.” Sivalingam shot 20 from 21 attempts in two quarters on court. By the time Puopolo returned the court in the last quarter, the damage had been done for the Falcons. It wasn’t all bad on the opening night of the season for the Falcons, with the division 1 team and under-19 sides both having wins against the Lightning. Tara Murray

Ready to make an impact By Tara Murray At 208 centimetres tall, Tharjini Sivalingam makes an impact every time she steps onto the netball court. Sri Lanka’s greatest netballer is now hoping to shoot goals both on and off the court with her new side City West Falcons. The Falcons unveiled their newest recruit in the opening round of the Victorian Netball League season. Falcons coach Marg Lind said Sivalingam was a talented player who deserved the opportunity to play in Australia. She said life hadn’t been easy for Sivalingam, who is known as the world’s tallest netballer. “It’s a long story, but she’s really suffered because of her height. “When she was younger she used to get harassed because of her height. Some people in Sri Lanka still laugh at her.” Sivalingam comes to the Falcons after her former coach Thilaka Jinadasa was talking to Lind and Falcons assistant coach Nicole Richardson at a netball tournament. “We got told about her and Thilaka thought she was wasting her time playing in Sri Lanka,” Lind said. “I sent an email and it went from there and we managed to get her out to play for us this year.” Lind said the main focus of the Falcons was to get Sivalingam to be able to play at the next level. West Coast Fever, which plays in the Suncorp Super Netball, has endorsed Sivalingam’s trip to Australia. If the Fever need a tall shooter this season, she’ll be considered. Richardson, who is also an assistant coach at the Fever, is her specialist coach. “The goal is to get her as good as possible to go to the next level,” Lind said. “This gives her the opportunity to be exposed to the Australian style and give her an opportunity.” Lind said Sivalingam being at the Falcons wouldn’t just benefit her, but also the club. Sivalingam played for the Sri Lankan national team for 10 years, including captaining the side. She was named best shooter at the 2011 World Netball Championships. In the pool games, Sri Lankan played eventual champions Australia. Political issues have meant that Sivalingam hasn’t been selected in the national team in recent years. She’d love to represent her country again. She’d also love to play in Australia’s top competition, Suncorp Super Netball. “Marg and Richo wanted me to come to the club [Falcons] and play. I’d like to get better so I said yes,” she said. 56 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 3, 2017

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The announcement that Werribee will field a stand-alone side in the VFL competition from next season was met with delight by a lot of dyed-in-the-wool Werribee fans. The Tigers have been linked to an AFL side since 2000 and for many supporters that has not been an easy pill to swallow. Werribee though has steadfastly stuck to wearing its own jumper, playing at its own ground (except this year due to the redevelopment) and sung its club song at every victory. The return to the big W jumpers a few seasons ago has further strengthened the Werribee identity. The club now has the challenge - and it is a big one - to match it with the AFL sides with no AFL players. The competition off field is equally challenging. Those locals who have pined for a return to the Werribee of old have got their wish. Now they, and everyone in the city of Wyndham, needs to embrace and support their local team 100 per cent. ■ The F&Y Socials Football Club was an FDFL powerhouse in its prime, winning four flags in five years before its demise at the end of the 1974 season. Funnily enough, the club is stronger now in recess than ever. Its annual reunion has grown over the past few years to include players and officials from other western suburbs clubs that are no longer in existence. F&Y boasts the likes of Peter Welsh, Ted Whitten Jnr, Ian Bryant and Barry Bennett among their alumni. The old boys can still tell a story or two and the day is a beauty for reminiscing about the good old days. Date is May 26th at Barkers Cafe, Whitten Oval from 12 noon. Bookings for the lunch with drinks at bar prices are available via Barry Bennett 0400 848 923 or thom_ben@optusnet.com.au ■ This Sunday Werribee will host a VFL game at Hogans Road Reserve, home of the Hoppers Crossing Warriors. The local connection has been strong between the two football clubs with current Warriors players Wayde Skipper, Ashlin Brown, Brent Sheean and Braden Ferrari ex-Werribee players, and senior coach Steve Kretiuk a former player and assistant coach at Avalon Airport Oval. The Hoppers-Werribee connection is probably best illustrated by Adam Taylor, a life member of both clubs. ‘Tails’ played over 100 games for Werribee and is a senior premiership player for the Warriors. The Werribee Past Players and Officials marquee on Sunday will be packed.

Tharjini Sivalingam (centre) with City West Falcons coach Marg Lind and Nicole Richardson. (Damjan Janevski)

“I’ve always played netball and I enjoy making friendships. “It’s nice in Australia and there’s wonderful people.” It’s the second time Sivalingam has been to Australia having spent time in Perth in 2012. Lind said it’s disappointing that Sivalingam wasn’t given an opportunity to

spend more time in Australia earlier in her career. “It’s a shame no one grabbed her 10 to 15 years ago, she could have been like Romelda Aiken. “Would have been good if someone found her at 24 not 35. She’s very shy and it’s only through the national netball team she started to get to know people.

City West Falcons coach Marg Lind had been hoping her side wouldn’t be impacted by an interrupted preseason come the start of Victorian Netball League Championship season. Unfortunately for Lind and the Falcons, it turned out to be the case on Wednesday in their season opener, a grand final rematch, against Melbourne University Lightning. The Falcons started well and led by two goals at quarter time, but when the Falcons had to make changes to their line-up, that’s when they struggled. Lightning took the lead in the second quarter and extended that at every break to win 57-48. For Lind, it was a slightly frustrating game, with the coaching panel restricted in who they could use in the attacking end. No hitch as Luke takes on leadership role Western Jets co-captain Luke Hitch is rising to the challenge of his leadership role with the TAC Cup club. Hitch reckons the key to being a good leader is sharing “good habits” with his teammates. The 18-year-old was taught the right way to approach his football by his dad, Greg, a former Footscray reserves player, local club Keilor, school Maribyrnong College and Jets coach Torin Baker. Hitch has been involved with good people and organisations throughout his junior football career, and it has helped shape him as a leader. Hitch was voted in by his Jets peers as a co-captain with teammate Nick Stuhdreier over the summer and it meant a lot to the young midfielder. “It’s obviously a privilege to have been voted in by the boys,” Hitch said. “We worked really hard over the preseason and earned the respect of the boys. “It’s good that I think we’ve both got that role together.” Hitch demonstrates his leadership best in the

heat of the battle. The lead-by-example operator is both ferocious in his attack on the contest as an inside midfielder and committed to the defensive acts that are so valued in the modern game. “How I play my football is how I show my leadership best,” Hitch said. “I always put my best foot forward.” Hitch likes to get in and under the packs. His best work so far this season has been at the coal face, dishing out to the Jets runners by hand. The defensive side of his game has improved exponentially in the past two seasons. The Cairnlea resident has racked up a massive 26 tackles over the opening three rounds of the season. Hitch says a move to defence in his bottom-age year helped him strengthen his defence. “Torin said to me last season, if you want to get the most out of the season and play as many games as you can, we’re going to work on your defensive role and that’s something that I wanted to do as well,” Hitch said. “I started as a midfielder and have played

in the midfield pretty much my whole life, so playing defence was something I was a bit foreign to, but once I went through a lot of training and worked on it real hard, it’s something that has built up for me and I’m taking a bit of that mindset into the midfield as well. “I’m quite an inside player, I like to get a lot of my own footy, but if there is a tackling opportunity, I’ll always give it my best crack. “I get some high [tackle] numbers now, but I think that’s just because I’m trying to get around the ball as much as I can.” Hitch was part of Vic Metro’s extended squad. He played in the exhibition game but missed the final cut. “I got to know a lot of the boys throughout the competition, so it was a great experience. “Now I’m super focused on playing for the Jets this year. “I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how the season unfolds.” Lance Jenkinson

Woodsmen in the mix By Lance Jenkinson Like an old friend returning, Spotswood is setting the pace in Western Region Football League division 1. The Woodsmen moved a game clear at the top of the ladder after a 127-point thrashing of Albion away at JR Parsons Reserve on Saturday. Woodsmen coach Anthony Eames rated the performance up there with some of his side’s best this season. “I thought we worked the ball as well this week as we have in any game this year,” he said. The last time Spotswood sat on top of the standings was back in round six, 2015. Shrewd recruiting and the addition of coach Eames seem to have the Woodsmen back on track as contenders. Eames will hold fire on any kind of declaration of contention until the Woodsmen have faced all teams once. “We’ve played a couple of good outfits, so it’s a bit of a gauge of where we’re at,” Eames said. “We’ve still got a couple of the other good sides to come, so I guess by the halfway stage most clubs will realise where they’re at. “I think the top six or seven clubs can all beat each other at the moment.” If Spotswood produces the kind of football it did against Albion, it will be hard to stop. The Woodsmen moved the ball efficiently and directly, giving their forwards good chances to convert. They did not waste those chances, finishing with 28 goals from just 36 scoring shots. But it was the collective defensive effort that pleased Eames the most. “We were putting pretty good pressure on through the midfield,” he said. “That’s one of Albion’s strengths … they were getting the ball, but they were getting it wide in the forward line as opposed to down the corridor where it could make it a bit easier [to convert]. “I thought our pressure on their midfield limited their ability to get it inside 50.” In June last year, Spotswood key position player Lachlan Fairley was one of the competition’s hard luck stories. Fairley tore his ACL and faced up to 12 months on the sidelines – a timeline that would still have seen him on the sidelines. “It wasn’t quite the 12-month injury that was forecast and he made it that way,” Eames said. “He worked so hard to get himself into the position where he was right to go for round one.” Fairley’s football world turned full circle on Saturday when he booted nine goals for Spotswood. So important to the Woodsmen as a swingman, he made the most of his time up forward to be the prime target.

“He presents hard as a forward, he’s a very good defender at the other end – so he’s an important player to us,” Eames said. Elliott Wood continued his good form in the Spotswood defence. He was named best-on-ground for his work in the back half. “Woody provides leadership and he managed the backline for us,” Eames said. “I thought our backline was terrific, but Woody was at the

forefront. I don’t think he got beaten in any contest.” Spotswood will host Wyndhamvale at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Woodsmen do not need to be reminded of the threat posed by the underdog Falcons. “They certainly gave Spotty a good old touch up last year,” Eames said. “There’s a few boys very keen to avenge that.”

Winning joy for Phoenix Altona East Phoenix have joined the winners’ list for the first time this season in Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. The Phoenix moved out of the bottom two on Saturday with a confidence boosting 2-1 win over Sydenham Park on the road at Keilor Lodge Reserve. At the forefront of the victory for the Phoenix was Goran Jozeljic, who scored two second-half goals. The Phoenix players will be hoping to keep up the momentum when they travel to North Sunshine Eagles on Saturday. Altona Magic remains the pacesetter in the division, though it was made to work hard for a 1-0 derby win over Yarraville Glory on Saturday night. Steven Thomson scored the game’s only goal after heading in a nicely weighted cross from John Stojcevski. The Magic is two points clear on top ahead of a trip to Westgate on Saturday. In men’s state league 2, Altona City quickly turned its attention to its upcoming rivalry game with Hoppers Crossing this Saturday night at Kin Reserve after disposing of Geelong Rangers 2-0 at Myers Reserve. City’s clashes with Hoppers Crossing are always the biggest games on the calendar for each club. This one will have extra significance as it will be a heavyweight first-versus-third clash. City, which sits third, will get no better chance to close the gap on Hoppers, which is a perfect five wins from five starts. City goes in with good form of their own after goals to captain Matthew Gray and Marcus Sherif secured the win over the Rangers. The misery continued for Melbourne City in men’s state league 3, slaughtered 8-1 by Heidelberg Stars at Cartledge Reserve. The story was not much better for Williamstown, which lost 5-0 to ladder-leader La Trobe University on the road. Altona North enjoyed a 4-1 win away to Melton Phoenix. Laverton Park minced Maribyrnong Greens 5-2, with Mayani Isdore leading the way with a double at Skinner Reserve, while Maidstone United had a tough time of it in a 4-0 loss to the mighty Deakin Ducks. Old guard reunite to take Roosters to the next level A new era has arrived for the Altona Roosters in the NRL Victoria first grade. Some familiar faces are at the helm of the Roosters, who have gone back to the future to fill some of their most important positions. New president Brandon Taunoa was actually a former president of the club not too long ago, first-year head coach Turei Collier is a club life member and assistant coach Bush Koti was involved in the Roosters during their golden generation. One familiarity is that all three people understand the culture of the Roosters. They also know what it will take to get the club back to the top of Victorian rugby league, having been part of successful eras in the past. “I’m trying to get the Roosters back to the top,” Taunoa said. “It’s good to have Turei on board and his

assistant coach Bush, who was part of the squad in the 90s and early 2000s when Altona won eight premierships in 10 years. “It’s just trying to bring the morale back to

the Roosters. “It’s disappeared a bit in the last few years.” Altona has rebuilt its junior stocks in recent years, but they have been lagging behind some of the powerhouse clubs in first grade. The Roosters used to be the most feared club in the state at the top level, but that has waned in recent times. Taunoa believes Collier can lead the Roosters back to the top. He is also confident in the next wave of Roosters coming through. “He’s been around the Roosters since the 1990s,” Taunoa said. “He’s got the knowledge and will be a good person for the young ones to learn off. “He keeps everything pretty simple, nothing fancy, just stick to the basics really.” On the field, Altona has a rock steady leader in Justin Barnard, who has been a leader of the forward pack for a long time.

“He leads from the front,” Taunoa said. “He’s teaching these young players what the standards are.” Altona has made an impressive start to the new season, winning two of its first three games. The Roosters made it back to back wins in a 52-32 beating of the Northern Thunder at Bruce Comben Reserve. It followed on from a stunning 68-12 annihilation of North West Wolves a week prior, a game that was massive for the collective self-belief of the Roosters. Just how much the Roosters have improved will be revealed on Saturday, when they travel to Haines Drive Reserve to face reigning champions Werribee Bears. Lance Jenkinson

Qamil Balla will put his undefeated record on the line. (Damjan Janevski)

Ready to take on world By Lance Jenkinson Western suburbs boxer Qamil Balla will put his undefeated record on the line when he squares off with WBA Oceania lightweight champion George Kambosos Jnr in a fight over 10 rounds at the Vodafone Events Centre in Auckland on Saturday night. Balla, nicknamed the Golden Boy, has 11 wins and a draw from his 12 fights, takes on Kambosos Jnr, who has a near identical record of 11 wins from 11 fights. It will be a mouth-watering semi main event to the Jeff Horn and Fernando Ferreira da Silva bout for the WBO Oriental welterweight title that will garner international attention on pay television. Balla, raised in Hoppers Crossing and trained at The Gym Yarraville, is so confident that he will get the better of Kambosos Jnr, he is already looking beyond the big fight. “It’s just an opportunity that it brings after I take this victory,” Balla said. “That’s what I’m really looking forward to because it’s going to put me in the spotlight. “I’ll be one of the biggest names in Australia 58 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 3, 2017

after I beat George because he’s got this high profile, he’s talked himself up.” Balla reckons the records of the two boxers are misleading. The 27-year-old from Altona North wants to expose Kambosos Jnr for what he calls a “padded” record. “My record speaks for itself more so than his,” Balla said. “He does do all the trash talking, but his one is way padded when you look into the fighters that he’s fought. “The only reputable win that he’s had is probably the last one that he fought and that was [Brandon] Ogilvie. “Other than that, it’s pretty well padded and I can’t wait to expose it.” Balla has predicted this fight will begin his ascent in the boxing world. He has put no ceiling on what he can achieve in the fight game with a world title his ultimate goal. “If I fight for a world title, then I will be bragging, but until then, I will just build my way up and this is going to take me there,” he said. Balla could not be better prepared to inflict a

first defeat on Kambosos Jnr. He says he did not want to roll out “the usual spiel” about having never trained harder for a fight in his life, but it’s true. “You’ll not only be able to see it May 6 on fight night, but during the weigh in, how much my body has changed and how ripped I am compared to my opponent,” Balla said. “It’s probably going to scare the pants off him before we actually get into the ring.” Balla, who is supported by wife Rabea and young children Nuri, two, and Mia, five months, is not only well placed physically, but he is mentally stronger than ever before. Entering the prime of his career at 27, he has enough experience in the ring to dictate terms and all the support he needs. In his corner is his brother Ibrahim, an Olympic boxer turned pro, and trainer Lim Jeka, a former Australian super welterweight champion. “I’ve pretty much graduated from the trade,” Balla said. “Now, being 27, I’m fit and strong and a fully fledged man, I’m ready to take this all the way to the world title. “I’ve got no doubts about this in my mind.”

Williamstown was overrun in the second half by a fast finishing Box Hill Hawks to lose by 28 points in the Victorian Football League at Burbank Oval on Sunday. The Seagulls had the upper hand at half time, holding a 17-point lead, but their wastefulness in front of goal in the first half kept the Hawks in the game. A scoreless third term, followed by a wayward 1.5 in the fourth, consigned the Seagulls to their second loss in three games to start the season and left them in unfamiliar territory outside the top eight. Half back Jake Greiser, onballer Michael Gibbons and forward Ben Cavarra were the standouts for Williamstown, while Cavarra, Arryn Siposs and Leigh Masters, in his 100th game, kicked two goals each. Williamstown will be looking to snap a two-game losing run when it hosts Coburg Lions at Burbank Oval on Sunday. Meanwhile, Footscray ran riot to beat North Ballarat by 124 points at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Friday night. The Bulldogs kicked 25 goals to five, including 17 in a second half blitz. Nathan Mullenger-McHugh, Declan Hamilton, Tory Dickson and Mitch Wallis kicked three goals apiece for Footscray. The returns from injury of Dickson and Wallis were pleasing for the Bulldogs. Wallis, who sustained a sickening broken leg last season, hit the ground running to produce a stunning best-on-ground performance. Shane Biggs and Lukas Webb also staked their claims for Western Bulldogs call-ups with strong outings. Footscray will host Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Saturday at 3.30pm in a curtain-raiser to the Western Bulldogs clash with the Richmond in the AFL. Meanwhile, VU Western Spurs will open its VFL Women’s season on the road on Saturday away to Cranbourne. Lance Jenkinson
