Crowds defy rainy day Hundreds turned out to pay their respects at the Anzac Day dawn service of the embattled Williamstown RSL. From the tiniest members of the 4th Williamstown Sea Scouts to representatives of the Williamstown Football Club, the community rallied to show its support. The Point Cook 418 air force cadets struck a commanding presence, while navy uniforms dotted the sea of umbrellas surrounding Williamstown cenotaph on a dark and rainy morning. The Williamstown RSL Club was forced to close in January due to a multi-million dollar debt and was last month placed in voluntary administration. Williamstown RSL president Ernie Poole urged those gathered on Tuesday to let RSL Victoria know how important it was to resurrect a local sub-branch. “We ask you to contact Anzac House and show your support and need for an RSL presence in Williamstown,” he told the crowd.

“We’ve seen some pretty serious changes to our foreshore environment with increased storm surges and damage to the seawalls that historically have protected our foreshore,” she said. “Council knows that to protect our 21 kilometres of foreshore from the predicted rising sea levels and increased storm events from climate change, we are going to have to spend $12-15 million at least over the next decade.” Cr Wilson said residents need to be protected from a projected sea-level rise of 50 centimetres by 2070 and increasingly frequent storm events. “That cost burden can’t fall entirely on the shoulders of the council,” she said.

The council, which provides the only free youth counselling service in Hobsons Bay, is also calling for additional services to reduce waiting lists of six weeks or more. “More young people in Hobsons Bay experience psychological distress and psychiatric hospitalisations than anywhere in the western metropolitan region and Victoria,” Cr Wilson said. “This can’t just be left for council to pick up entirely, which is what is currently occurring locally.” The council is also calling for a “centrally co-ordinated approach” to transport and traffic congestion in the west. 1219971-HM10-16

Footscray Hospital’s redevelopment, a boost to youth mental health services and money for the Maribyrnong River and the bay coastline top the council priority list for next week’s state government budget. Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the Footscray Hospital emergency department needed to double in size to cope with population pressures. “Our city has to provide for our growing population, as well as our ageing infrastructure,” he said.

Mr Wall called for financial support in implementing the River Edge Masterplan and funding to replace the Henderson House Landing, left languishing after collapsing more than a year ago. “The Maribyrnong is Melbourne’s second largest waterway,” he said. “Funds are regularly put towards the Yarra River, but the Maribyrnong keeps missing out.” The council is seeking more help in dealing with contaminated land, improving cycling infrastructure and upgrading social housing. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said her council was calling for “serious contributions” from the state government. 1182408-CG18-15

Cash stash ends with jail term By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows woman was this month sentenced to nine months’ jail after being caught with nearly $400,000 in her cupboard. Lavinda Basi, 49, pleaded guilty in the County Court to one charge of dealing with money reasonably suspected of being the proceeds of crime. The court heard that in 2012 the Australian Federal Police began investigating unauthorised financial transfers from Australian bank accounts.

Basi’s son Bobby Rhana was identified as the principal suspect in relation to internet bank fraud. In February 2014, police raided his house and seized several phones. Forensic analysis of the phones detected fraud losses totalling more than $900,000. The same day, police raided Basi’s Altona Meadows home where she lived with her 21-year-old daughter. Police found $396,480 in the back of a locked lounge room cupboard. Judge Christopher Ryan said Basi was receiving social security benefits at the time

of her arrest but had since been employed as a vegetable packer in Werribee. “Communications between yourself and your son and the banking records relating to your finances were relied upon by the Crown to establish the elements of the offence to which you have pleaded guilty,” he said.

“It is plain from the authorities that money laundering is regarded as a very serious offence by Parliament and one which the need for general deterrence is of particular significance. “By this sentence I must punish you, publicly denounce your conduct and deter others from committing this kind of crime.” Basi received a nine-month sentence with four months suspended. The maximum penalty for her offence was three years’ imprisonment and/or a $30,600 fine.

Net cast for anglers keen to help Gateway Community Services is angling for volunteers to go fishing off piers with seniors and people who require low-level care. The not-for-profit organisation, based in South Kingsville, supports people with disabilities from Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Wyndham. Volunteer co-ordinator Fatima Milhem said volunteers were wanted who could go fishing on Mondays from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

“Volunteers are needed for support with sandwiches, making morning tea,” she said. “Most importantly, it’s someone who has a little bit of knowledge in the fishing area … and are happy to support a senior with reeling up the fish, having a bit of chat about their life. “I think it’s really fun – it’s an opportunity to go outdoors, get some fresh air.” She said all equipment, morning tea and lunches were provided.

“The members are quite chirpy and quite interactive,” Ms Melhem said. “They’re isolated and lonely, so they’re looking for an outlet to go out and talk and just get some interaction in the community.” For information about volunteering, visit gatewaycommunityservices.org.au or call 9399 3511. A $1.5 million allocation to the Church Street Children’s Centre redevelopment, $1.1 million to a playground at Footscray Park and $1 million upgrade of the bicycle network are the biggest spends flagged in Maribyrnong council’s proposed annual budget. The $134 million proposed 2017-18 budget and strategic resource plan, due before tonight’s council meeting, includes a rate rise of two per cent, the highest amount allowed under rate capping. The rise follows a 2.5 per cent rise for 2016-17 and would take rates earnings to $94.8 million for the year, including $1.6 million from supplementary rates. Pensioners would receive a $185 rebate. The proposed budget features a $43.7 million capital works program including $8.2 million on roads, $5.6 million on parks, open space and streetscapes and $2.9 million on footpaths and cycleways. A message from the mayor and chief executive, included in the proposed budget, signals the need to maintain ageing infrastructure while “finding innovative ways” to plan for the future. Other flagged projects include $800,000 for graffiti removal, $800,000 to upgrade Kingsville Tennis Club facilities at Hansen Reserve in West Footscray, $700,000 to plant almost 2000 trees, $300,000 to crack down on dumped rubbish and $200,000 for a waste education program to promote recycling. A surplus of $6.7million is predicted. If adopted by councillors the proposed budget and strategic plan would be advertised for 28 days with public submissions invited and considered. Funding plan for new arts festival By Benjamin Millar

4 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 26, 2017

Fast teen takes on the world

(Steven Tucker)

A new arts festival is set to rise from the ashes of the defunct Big West Festival. Maribyrnong council has proposed an annual three-week arts festival, held each August, to step into the vacuum left after last year’s sudden decision by the Big West board to wind up the 20-year-old festival. A report to tonight’s council meeting suggests the new arts festival “will grow and attract significant support to the west” from government, philanthropic and corporate partners. “The closure of Big West has left a gap in the festival calendar and in particular leaves the Festival City program without a dedicated arts festival produced in Maribyrnong.” The report recommends the council allocate $85,000 to the festival, acknowledging it is significantly short of the Big West Festival’s operating budget of more than $700,000. “For many reasons this level of funding is not immediately possible or available.” Feedback on a new festival was sought from Festival City grant recipients, the Festival Advisory Panel, councillors and the arts and festivals community. “Whilst some stakeholders suggested that any council funds available could be directed towards encouraging greater artistic content in existing festivals, generally it was considered that there was a need for a separate and significant arts focused festival.” The new arts festival will focus on artists and creative industries based in the western suburbs and on works generated in and from the western suburbs. The Arts West alliance of inner-west arts organisations was initially interested in spearheading a new festival, but pulled out due to the constrained timeframe.

Williamstown North teenager Chandler Cooper is living the dream after being contracted for the 2017 Junior Moto3 GP in Europe. The 16-year-old, who started riding dirt bikes at age 10, aims to be Australia’s next champion by the time he’s an adult. He spends most of his time away from Australia but was back home this month. “I’ve only just come back for two weeks and then I’m back in Spain to do my first race and then I race at Le Mans [France],” Cooper said. “This year, I’m still learning and trying to make my way up to the top. More than likely, next year I might hop onto a bigger bike, we’re not sure yet.” Cooper, who attended Williamstown High School, has since raced on well-known circuits including Jerez, Catalunya and Valencia and Albacete in Spain. He’s come a long way from being turned away from the track at Winton in country Victoria two years ago. Cooper said he hoped to win a championship next year. “For me, it’s always been a dream,” he said. Forges bid scales back plans By Benjamin Millar A new cinema, supermarket and shops topped by a nursing home and more than 200 apartments would be built in the centre of Footscray under a $70 million plan seeking Maribyrnong council approval. An application for 235 apartments in two towers soaring up to 19 storeys for 14 Albert Street, submitted last year, has been scaled down in a bid to gain planning approval at tonight’s council meeting. Banco Group’s revised proposal for the

4776 square metre former Forges department store site reduces the height from 19 storeys to 15 storeys and cuts the number of apartments to 202, including 125 one-bedroom dwellings and 77 two-bedroom dwellings. It retains plans for a 120-room nursing home, medical centre, six-screen cinema, restaurant, supermarket, bar and specialty shops. The existing building, carpark and sky bridge over Albert Street would be demolished to make way for construction of a 15 and 12-storey building with two levels of basement carparking.

Binks Ford site at 34 Cowper Street. The $100 million project at the corner of Hopkins and Cowper Street proposes 412 townhouses and apartments across four precincts ranging from three to 10 storeys. The proposal would provide 208 car spaces, a shortfall of 111 compared to the statutory requirements. A planning forum held in March heard concerns about parking, open space, impact on heritage and a lack of three-bedroom dwellings. Council officers have recommended the project be approved.

A total of five objections were received, objecting to the building height and the podium design. The proposal includes 348 car spaces, the developer seeking a reduction of 14 spaces from the statutory requirements. The former Forges department store has stood vacant since November 2008. Council officers have recommended the project be approved, provided a number of conditions are met. The proposal comes as councillors also consider a separate application for the former

New look for Newport Heritage facades in Newport’s main shopping strip will be transformed under an initiative of local traders – and with a donation of 200 litres of paint from Dulux. Newport Traders Association’s Phoebe Giles said residents and visitors had commented on the beautiful art deco architectural features of Hall Street, with the Junction and Varley buildings being “the heroes of the street”. “A suggestion was made to the Newport Traders Association to initiate a painting project and engage a colour consultant to showcase Newport’s historically-rich suburb with a coastal vibe,” she said. Ms Giles said the traders engaged a Dulux consultant to ensure continuity of the colour scheme. “In the meantime, Dulux said ‘we’re going to donate all of the paint’,” she said. “Thirteen colours were chosen from

Dulux’s traditional mountain ranges … so they’ve gone with light charcoal, dark charcoal, terracotta, mustard, ice blue and quite a dark navy. “Works have just begun with the old Tracy building, now revamped in the new colours chosen; Varley will be painted this week, and Hawkers Lane.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Council feels budget squeeze By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has released its draft 2017-18 budget which shows rates and waste charges each increasing by two per cent, with the council saying it will become harder to balance community needs as the state government’s rate cap starts to bite. The council has an operational surplus of $14.5 million and plans to spend $35.1 million on capital works. It has $14.2 million in existing borrowings and proposes no new loans. Capital works include $7.25 million on roads,

$4.1 million on footpaths and shared trails, $7.9 million on open space and $11.3 million for buildings including $4.5 million for the new Altona Early Years Centre. Mayor Sandra Wilson said the surplus was expected to decline in the future because of rate capping and factors such as the drying up of external grants. “As well as the capital works program, council will continue to fund more than 100 valued services to our community, including libraries, meals on wheels, aged care services, disability services, children and youth services,

immunisation sessions, cultural events and local business development, not to mention waste collections,” she said. Councillor Angela Altair told last week’s council meeting the rate cap made it “devilishly hard” to balance community needs. “We’ve had to put together a very good budget within some extraordinary constraints, not least of course the rate capping, while … at the same time Treasury itself admits that the forecast for the Victorian wage price index is going to be 2.5 per cent,” she said. “So, Treasury has determined that we can

only increase rates by a flat two per cent while at the same time acknowledging that wages alone will go up by a minimum of 2.5 per cent.” Cr Altair noted that the tipping levy which the council had to contribute to the state government had gone up 600 per cent over 10 years. The waste tipping fee includes the landfill levy all councils pay to the government. It has increased from $9 per tonne in 2008-09 to a forecast $63 per tonne in 2017-18. The budget is out for feedback until 5pm on May 24.

Funding score for sport Resident soccer and cricket clubs at J.T. Gray Reserve in Williamstown North have scored $650,000 in state funding towards a new $4 million pavilion that aims to increase participation among female players. The government announced Hobsons Bay council would receive $550,000 from the Victorian Asia Cup 2015 Legacy Fund and $100,000 from its Female Friendly Facilities initiative to promote girls’ and women’s participation in sport. The council allocated $680,000 for the first stage of the project in its draft 2017-18 budget. The ground is home to Barnstoneworth United junior and senior football soccer clubs, St Johns Williamstown Cricket Club, Williamstown Congregational Cricket Club and Williamstown Soccer Club. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the grant would ensure the cubs had state-of-the-art facilities.

“Every weekend J.T. Gray Reserve is full of local kids playing junior sport,” he said. “This grant will help encourage junior players to get onto the field.” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson, whose mayoral priorities include improving access to sport for females, said there was a particular need for female change rooms at the popular reserve. “We look forward to working collaboratively with all the clubs to develop the best possible shared pavilion and one that will hopefully be a real benchmark for future sporting pavilions in Hobsons Bay,” Cr Wilson said. “The unisex change rooms for me in particular will be of particular importance for the ever increasing female participation in soccer at J.T. Gray Reserve and I’m proud of what this pavilion will become.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Korean War tribute for Footscray By Benjamin Millar Victoria’s first major public memorial honouring those who served in the Korean War will be built in Footscray. Veterans Minister John Eren visited Quarry Park on Wednesday to announce a $100,000 state government contribution to a project that will recognise more than 17,000 Australians who served in the Korean War between 1950 and 1953. The war claimed the life of 339 Australians and left another 1200 wounded. The Republic of Korea will contribute $300,000 to the memorial, on top of a further

$150,000 raised by the Korean War Memorial Committee. Designs are expected to be completed in coming months. Republic of Korea consul-general Jo Hongju welcomed the announcement of the “meaningful and honourable” project. “The memorial will honour the Korean War veterans and also represent the close friendship between Korea and Victoria,” he said. Mr Eren said the project would be important to Korean War veterans and the wider Korean community. “We want to ensure that future generations

can visit this memorial and pay their respects,” he said. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the memorial would be a place that brought people together and commemorated those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Maribyrnong council last year announced Quarry Park would be the site of the memorial,

following an approach from the Australian Korean War Veterans and the Korean War Memorial Committee. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming welcomed the project, which the council’s Heritage Advisory Committee indicated would reflect the connection to the munitions manufacturing history of Maribyrnong and the nearby Edgewater estate. “Our city has a long history supporting Australian servicemen and women,” she said. “It’s fitting that we will have Victoria’s first war memorial honouring the efforts of Australians and Koreans who fought in the Korean War.”

Golden future beckons Two stars of Footscray’s Golden Fish synchronised swimming club hope to make a splash on the international stage at the World Championships in Budapest in July. Emily Rogers and Hannah Cross, members of Australia’s 2016 Olympic team, were selected for the 2017 national team following the Hancock Prospecting Synchronised Swimming Australian Championships and team trials held in Melbourne at Easter. Rogers, 19, has been a familiar face on the national team since she was 15, two years after first dipping her toe into the sport. “Synchronised swimming offers amazing opportunities to develop skills and go on to compete at national and international levels,” she said. “It’s a great sport with a fusion of swimming, dance and gymnastics.” The Golden Fish club’s reputation for nurturing young talent was again at the fore

when Anastasia Kusmawan collected a silver medal for her under-12 solo routine and the under-12 team won bronze. Duet pair Kelsey Chatterton and Eliza Skeels also picked up bronze, with the Golden Fish junior and open combo teams bringing home silver and bronze. Head coach Anna Nepatocheva said Kusmawan is a stand-out performer with a big future ahead of her. “Anastasia is one of our next generation of exciting synchronised swimmers,” she said. “If she continues to enjoy her sport we will definitely be watching her at the Olympic Games.” Nepatocheva said that while the Golden Fish club might be making its mark at the elite level, it welcomed people of all ages and abilities. The author of Death by Dim Sim recounts the pivotal moment that led to her shedding 40 kilograms over 21 months. “I’d just been reading about how being seriously overweight was as bad as smoking,” Ms Vincent said. “I was on my way to get my afternoon daily dim sims and I just had this thought that if they’re doing death by cigarette, then I’m doing death by dim sim.” Ms Vincent, 50, said she had tried crash and fad diets since she was a teenager, so she decided to try something different. She contacted Spotswood nutritionist Aprille McMahon.

“She taught me this extraordinary way of eating called low-carb high-fat, which is very big overseas – it hasn’t really gotten huge here yet but it will – and the weight just fell off me,” Ms Vincent said. “I’ve lost 40 kilos eating full-fat milk, cream, cheese, lots of good fats.” Death by Dim Sim will be launched at Newport Community Hub on April 27 from 6.30-7.45pm, with Ms Vincent in conversation with her nutritionist. The free launch is part of Homegrown Hobsons Bay, a program supporting writers with a connection to Hobsons Bay. Bookings are required via Hobsons Bay Libraries. Goya Dmytryshchak

Funds grant a lifeline Some asylum seekers and refugees are so traumatised by authority in their homeland that they are too scared to even go to the bank, says Mark Brophy, who manages the Williamstown Community Education Centre. The centre is now able to run a financial literacy course thanks to seed funding from the Hobsons Bay Community Fund (HBCF). “These people are coming from countries where maybe at times they’ve been authoritarian and so they’re quite nervous and they’re not confident to go to banks because bureacracies in their country were maybe a bit strict and could have negative consequences. “They come to us with everything from

divorce settlements to rental contracts to online sales to paying bills – it’s difficult for someone … to understand some bills and administration.” Applications are open for this year’s round of HBCF funding. Grants committee chairman David Mattner said the fund used interest from its corpus to award small grants of $500-$5000 to local organisations and associations. “The HBCF believes that by working together, we can benefit and reinforce our community’s capacity to look after itself for present and future generations.” Applications close May 31. Drone busts Brooklyn business By Ewen McRae A Brooklyn business has been fined almost $8000 after drone technology showed it was not complying with its licence. Western Land Reclamation Pty Ltd was last week fined $7700 for failing to cover exposed waste at its Brooklyn landfill in November, 2016. It was the company’s second breach of EPA regulations in the past year. EPA metro manager Daniel Hunt said investigators were able to identify the breaches by using new surveillance gear.

‘‘

Waste contained in landfill cells must have a covering …

’’

- Daniel Hunt

“It has already caught several sites out, particularly, as in this case, around a licence condition that requires operators of landfills to cover exposed waste at the end of operations for the day,” Mr Hunt said.

He said a drone was used after EPA investigators saw staff leaving for the day without covering refuse. “The licence conditions for Western Land Reclamation’s Brooklyn landfill clearly state that waste contained in landfill cells must have a covering of 15 centimetres of soil, or a cover approved by EPA, placed over any exposed waste at the end of each day,” he said. “EPA’s drone was able to capture footage of uncovered waste in a landfill cell that appeared to be industrial in nature and included the likes of wooden pallets, rolls of carpet, a mattress

and a large roll of discarded paper.” Mr Hunt said the EPA required the company to cover waste at the end of each day to stop the odour affecting nearby residents, and also to lessen the chances of refuse being blown away from the landfill. Covering also reduced the chance of vermin gaining access to the litter. In July, 2016, the EPA issued a breach notice and fined the company for dust and smoke discharged from the Bunting Road site after a number of complaints by local residents.

Footscray’s hair story As Footscray undergoes rapid change, some things are hair to stay. Gentrification’s march is yet to overtake the suburb’s hairdressers and barbershops that provide lasting snapshots of every new wave of migration. Footscray photographer Noah Thompson has spent three years documenting the people behind the snips and styles, cuts and curls, bringing it all together in a new book and exhibition. Thompson said Footscray Hair was a celebration of Footscray’s cultural diversity and standing as a centre for newly arrived Australians. “I just noticed there were all these different barber shops – Italian places through to Vietnamese places and, more recently, the Indian, Somali and South Sudanese,” he said. “It seemed like an interesting way of talking about migration, to Footscray and Australia.”

Originally from Darwin, Thompson has been living in Footscray for five years. The Footscray Hair project began taking shape in 2015, the exhibition coming together with the help of an arts grant from Maribyrnong council. Thompson first became serious about photography in high school and has recently returned to study the form. “I’m mainly interested in documentary photography,” he said. “I’m interested in ideas of community, in social and political and environmental phenomena.” The Footscray Hair exhibition will open from 6pm on Wednesday, April 26, at Trocadero Art Space, Level 1, 119 Hopkins Street, Footscray, and run until May 13. Books will be available for purchase for $25 for the duration of the exhibition. Benjamin Millar

MY PLACE Seaholme’s Abbie Kinniburgh is helping organise next month’s national conference for people with disorders of the corpus callosum, such as herself. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

What do you like about Seaholme? It is very calm and cool with the water just a block around the corner, a walking path on the water, 10 minutes from the shops and a small train station across the road running to and from the shops and towards the city. Close enough for good access to local and wider community, but far enough away from the “tourists” and visitors increasingly discovering Altona beach in the heat and holidays. Seaholme is a hidden gem to live in … a small country-like community, supporting and providing for local needs, people and causes. What would you change? The only thing I can think to change in Altona is to have more small local stores and businesses to be able to support local needs, people and causes. I think a small community should have mainly small businesses supporting small causes. What’s your favourite cafe? My favourite local cafe is up-and-coming Bezirk. It is the only one and was much needed.

Can you tell us a bit about your condition and the challenges? At age two, my parents were told I would never be able to read or write. Now I am studying at uni. I was born with partial agenesis of the corpus callosum. Basically, the bridge connecting the two hemispheres of the brain has holes in it. Disorders of the corpus callosum (DCC) are diagnosed through brain MRI or in-utero. It varies in severity from being peg fed and unable to walk or talk to walking, talking, and being visibly “able”. I appear to have nothing wrong, but I have high anxiety, slow processing and am unable to cope with multiple things at once. I also have many other health issues that cannot be seen. DCC needs much more recognition and support in Australia. Tell me about next month’s national conference in Melbourne organised by Australian organisation for Disorders of the Corpus Callosum. It will provide information and connection for people in society and people experiencing a DCC. The conference will include sessions to discuss, workshop and hear about therapies, as well as international speakers and the latest research related to DCC.

(Joe Mastroianni)

I have lived in Hobsons Bay for nearly seven years now. I live in Seaholme in an old shop. I live with my mum who saw the area and the shop, fell in love with the place and the area and bought it very spontaneously, all over one weekend.

My favourite cafe in Altona – Hangar1one2 Cafe. It took the plunge, opening up the quieter end of Pier Street. It’s still there, got great food and has breakfast till 3pm. I hope it stays.

is barely touching the sides. Schools tell us they love the regular attendance of retirees, their great attitude and the fact that many of the kids don’t have a grandparent or trusted older person in their life.” Seaholme’s David Cudmore started volunteering in the math classroom after he retired from automotive management nine months ago. “It’s about mentoring the students with respect to teaching them the value of maths for later in life,” he said. “It’s extremely rewarding. Volunteers are needed for two hours a week in areas such as numeracy, literacy, science, kitchen-garden programs and language. The program is supported by Hobsons Bay council, Gandel Philanthropy and The William Buckland Foundation. Details: edconnectaustralia.org.au or call 1800 668 550.

Retirees are being sought to go back to school as volunteers. EdConnect Australia, a charity connecting volunteers with primary and secondary school students, said there was a desperate need in the Hobsons Bay area. General manager Lisa Kingman is putting a call out for seniors in the lead up to National Volunteer Week from May 8-14. She said the program benefited students, took the pressure off teachers and improved the wellbeing of older residents. “It’s really a simple concept that harnesses all the wisdom, time and skill of retirees and directs it at young people who may otherwise fall through the cracks,” Ms Kingman said. “We’ve been in Hobsons Bay for eight years but we have never had so many requests for support from schools until now. We currently have 25 people helping in eight schools but that

TRAVEL STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Leave the everyday behind Water, wine and walking … what better way to pass a long weekend than a wonderful adventure to the land of the long white cloud. By Stephen Linnell It is known as the ‘City of Sails’ – and for good reason. Beyond Viaduct Harbour and a waterfront sparkling with energy, Auckland reveals itself as both a destination and a springboard for further exploration. New Zealand’s northern-most big city, with a population of about 1.4 million, Auckland reminds us of Adelaide, with bits of Sydney Harbour attached. We were looking for a long weekend escape, something different to the usual Queensland or Whitsunday getaway. And in Auckland we found it. For just $1200, we scored return air tickets for two plus four nights accommodation in central Auckland, in an apartment overlooking the CBD, a quick (albeit uphill) sprint from one of its most notable landmarks – Skycity. The panoramic view from the top of Skycity gives you a sense of just how beautiful New Zealand’s topography is. While there, you can enjoy the 360-degree view either from the observation deck, the revolving restaurant, or for those game (or silly) enough, stroll the skywalk outside the building, attached to just a bit of rope, 192 metres above ground. Having endured (and, I mean endured)

this latter experience, this author highly recommends the observation deck option. Back on ground, we were keen to explore more of what Auckland has to offer, so we headed downtown to the harbour, home to a couple of America’s Cup sailing challengers. The focal point of Auckland – bars and top-end restaurants – wrap themselves around the harbour creating an electric vibe. Here, ferries seamlessly cruise in and out, taking

both travellers and commuters to various destinations, such as the historical seaside village of Devonport, just 15 minutes away. Once there, the walk to the summit of Mt Victoria is inspiring, even on a humid, late March morning. The vista opens up Auckland’s north shore, city skyline and Hauraki Gulf, home to scores of islands, all of which have their own special tale to tell.

But the highlight was our next adventure, a 45-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland to Waiheke, the ‘Island of Wine’. And there’s nothing like working up a thirst, beginning the day zip-lining just metres above ancient native forests, filled with silver ferns and now-protected kauri trees. Leaving harnesses and helmets behind, our tour takes us to the Stonyridge vineyard, home to the Stonyridge Larose – a much sought-after

cabernet blend, but one that is out of our price range at $290 per bottle. Some younger, less expensive variants managed to quench our thirst over lunch. From there, we move to Rangihoua Estate, where we are introduced to some award-winning olive oil, and an interesting explanation of the manufacturing process. But the next stop was an obvious highlight. The Miro Vineyard, overlooking Onetangi

Have your celebration

Bay, is a Spanish treasure that is home to Casita Mira, a restaurant with gorgeous views and ambience … and a port named Madame Rouge (so sweet and silky). Had we known better, our travelling party would have stopped the tour there to enjoy some tapas (and more wine and port), and take in the scenery over a long, long lunch. But tours often hurry you along, so off we went to the Mudbrick Vineyard (breathtaking

views), another Waiheke winemaking success story that thrives on its locally-produced syrah, a cousin of our shiraz grape. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The wine tour concluded, and our ferry returned to downtown Auckland … just in time for dinner and a nightcap or two, which we savoured as we planned our next day’s adventure.

Palm Lake lifestyle puts people first Residents of Palm Lake Resort Truganina may ordinarily luxuriate in a carefree lifestyle, but they are also happy to get their hands dirty as contributors to their community. A few weeks ago, sales manager Zoe Ilich-Paul reports, a 23-strong Palm Lake crew volunteered for Clean Up Australia Day.

“For people who like a bit of action, we have an undercover bowling green, an indoor heated pool and spa for aquarobics … plus a fully equipped gymnasium. We even have a personal trainer on board – free to residents – who can organise personalised training schedules.”

“A wonderful effort was put in by the team, including our caretakers Jo and Troy, and we’re proud of and grateful for their splendid contribution to improving grounds surrounding the village. They wound up collecting more than 50 bags of rubbish, with the morning culminating in a yummy barbecue lunch.”

Other fun activities include arts and craft sessions, virtual golf and games of darts, pool or snooker.

Most of the time at Palm Lake Resort is about the luxury of living affordably in world-class facilities, expressly designed for active, mature-age adults. Zoe says there are many activities to keep residents as active or as kicked-back as they may want.

If quiet time is sought, there’s a library with a big selection of books, CDs and videos to browse, and free access to computers, the internet and a printer. And the luxurious 49-seat cinema serves as social hub and place to take visiting grandkids and other family. The hub of the resort is the Paradise Palms Clubhouse, where one free weekly meal per household is provided. It’s also a place to rekindle romances at candlelit tables, or on the dance floor.

Buying into Palm Lake Resort brings financial peace of mind, too, says Zoe. “Residents pay no entry fees and no stamp duty when they move in. “The low fortnightly site fee covers all council rates, garbage disposal and unlimited use of all facilities. And rental assistance may be available for those who qualify through Centrelink.” The final release is now selling, with some great two and threebedroom designs to choose from. Call anytime to organise a tour. Palm Lake Resort, 7 Taronga Road, Truganina. Inquiries: 1800 686 096 or www.palmlakeresort.com.au

TUSCAN CHICKEN LASAGNE I spent a few days over Easter visiting my mum at Inverloch. Mum loves pasta, but rarely cooks it for herself, so each time I visit, I’ll often make a pasta dish for dinner. Nothing too taxing, usually mac cheese, spag bol or a tuna mornay with pasta spirals. On this particular visit, I decided to road-test a dish that popped up recently in my Facebook feed – Tuscan chicken lasagne. It was a great success and, best of all, didn’t require a whole lot of prep or washing up. Just pan fry four small, skinless chicken breast fillets in a little olive oil until cooked through. Set aside. Using the same pan, add a little more oil and sauté 3 crushed garlic cloves. Add a small tin of chopped tomatoes and simmer over a medium heat. Add half a cup of chicken stock and simmer. Then add half a cup of cream, two handfuls of spinach, half a cup of grated parmesan. Stir and season with salt, pepper and dash of dried Italian herbs.

ANGELA PIPPOS TV AND RADIO PRESENTER, AND AUTHOR

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? AP: On a scale of one to 10, I’m a comfortable seven (my partner is a 9.5, and luckily for me, loves to cook). FB: What is your signature dish? AP: The dish I seduced him (my partner) with – a spicy (not for the faint-hearted) Thai green fish curry (freshly caught blue-eye). He went back for thirds. Sensational! FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? AP: It doesn’t necessarily flow, but it’s my last meal so who cares! Half a dozen Coffin Bay oysters, a plate of beef carpaccio, barbecued octopus with a slice of lemon, spaghetti and meatballs, then skip the sweet stuff and bring out a selection of cheeses (mostly hard) – and all of this accompanied by matching wines, please. FB: What is your favourite food TV show and who is your favourite TV food person? AP: It has to be Rick Stein. I like the way he takes me all over the world (often away from the major cities) into little towns and villages – cooking whatever takes his fancy with a glass of red close at hand (and throwing in a bit of history along the journey) – I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting him, and he’s lovely. FB: What is your favourite food? AP: For someone who loves food as much as I do, this is almost impossible to answer. So I’ll stick to my heritage and give this a Greek flavour … perfectly seasoned lamb on a spit, roasting over hot coals, served with potatoes and a Greek salad. All super-fresh ingredients, proving that sometimes it’s the simple stuff that’s the best. FB: What is your favourite drink? AP: A full-bodied, slightly peppery, smooth as silk Barossa Valley shiraz. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? AP: Representing my passions (and in noany particular order), Emily As all always, if you have Bronte, Billie Jean King, Paul Newman (fresh off the set of Cool recipes, tips or other Hand Luke Luke), Goddess Athena and Paul Keating.

Let it bubble away for a bit. Spread the sauce on the bottom of a baking dish. Top with a layer of dried lasagne sheets. Slice the cooked chicken and put on top of the lasagna sheets. Add sauce, then a layer of torn up mozzarella, then repeat layers. Top with grated parmesan, cover and bake at 200 degrees Celsius for about 45 minutes (remove cover halfway through cooking).

“A recipe has no soul. You as the cook must bring soul to the recipe” – Thomas Keller (American chef and restaurateur)

WATERLINE PLACE – AV Jennings Expansive terraces capturing sea and city views, home-like spaces for entertaining and a relaxed lifestyle are just some of the reasons why owner-occupiers are choosing Gem at Waterline Place in Williamstown, according to AVJennings State General Manager Angus Johnson. He says the 10-storey development, designed by award-winning architects Elenberg Fraser, will be a wonderful seaside community for all ages. “AVJennings increased floor plan sizes and reduced the number of apartments at Gem to allow more room to entertain and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle,” he says. “Gem is the first development in Williamstown to give the option of merging apartments to create a larger home – there are a number of customisation options.”

‘‘

Rather than having a conventional building … all apartments have exceptional - Angus Johnson views

’’

Mr Johnson says the downsizer market and families are finding Gem very appealing. “It’s near the water and it’s a very local, friendly community,” he says. “It’s got great infrastructure, access to shops, public transport and the beach. “Rather than having a conventional building where the apartments on each side look in different directions, there will be apartments in the middle with front-to-back aspects, which means all the apartments have exceptional views.” Elenberg Fraser principal Caleb Smith

says Gem will connect emotionally with buyers. “It’s not just a dollar transactional relationship,” he says. “It’s actually about building a genuine relationship with the purchaser and tailoring each apartment to their needs. “Apartments are designed for owner-occupiers and have a superior approach. They will feature expansive living and dining areas, with a focus on the bay

views. The apartments will offer full-length balconies which will incorporate greenery. Versatile floor plans allow for the addition of a butler’s kitchen and there are full laundry facilities.” The name Gem references the local pier, named in the late 1870s after the paddle steamer that ran a ferry service from Williamstown to Port Melbourne from 1846 to 1886. “When we designed Gem,” Mr Smith

says, “we wanted to incorporate the rich maritime history of Williamstown but to do it in an abstract way. Unique forms of yachts and spinnakers as they capture the wind were used as inspiration on the building.” Waterline Place Sales Centre, 14 Kanowna Street, Williamstown. Offered for just the second time in 50 years, this 1920s residence is set on about 700 square metres and within walking distance of the beach and across the street from Williamstown Botanic Gardens. Restored interiors include period door and window features, ceiling roses, hardwood flooring throughout and high ceilings. All main rooms are set off from the grand 2.4-metre-wide hallway, original french doors opening to a formal lounge room with twin love seats set within an ornate and deep bay window. Two fitted bedrooms are off to the right of the hall with a main bathroom adjacent. Walk through to the dining/family room with another bay window with seating. The tiled kitchen has period-sensitive cabinetry. A third bedroom and walk-through study sit at the rear of the property. The sizeable backyard has a garden shed and enchanting country-style garden.

Redevelop or revamp, this brick veneer on 1070 square metres at Newport is on a popular street, close to Newport Lakes and a five-minute drive to Williamstown beach. With side and rear access, a multi-unit development is very possible (STCA). Equally, this is an ideal location for a family residence. As is, there are good bones here – three fitted bedrooms, a sun-filled front lounge room with attractive 1950s period details, including a brick feature wall with gas fire, built-in book shelving and modernist timber panelling. The kitchen-meals area gets plenty of light thanks to picture windows. Floorboards have been restored throughout, and there’s a large, sunny backyard with a mature pine tree at the rear.

Beautifully crafted to maximise its setting on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, this executive residence sits modestly among the gun trees on its 1045 square-metre bush block. Twin single remote garages flank a wide and welcoming entry. The main bedroom is to the left of entry, and has an open wardrobe and fully tiled en suite with frameless shower, twin vanity and spa. Three more good-sized fitted bedrooms follow, with a bright central bathroom. A library/study comes before the main living area, with vaulted 4.6-metre downlit ceilings, bulk-head detailing and Canadian maple floorboards. The spacious kitchen and family-meals area is flooded with light, while a north-facing alfresco deck overlooks the river. This house also has ducted heating and cooling, ducted vacuum and solar panels.

Snug up in one of Melbourne’s most community-centric bayside suburbs. Close to diverse shopping options and with Paisley Park close by, this one-bedroom unit is ideal for downsizers or first-home buyers, but also a great spend for an investment portfolio. Currently leased at $1130 per month, it is one of just five in the complex. The kitchen and bathroom have been renovated and both are light and airy. The bedroom has a built-in wardrobe and there are two private courtyards, one with a decked entertainment area, plus a storage shed. Other features include a split-system, communal laundry and undercover parking, all just moments from public transport, schools and parks, including a golf course, and Bayfit Leisure Centre.

Double-glazed stacker-doors open up to a fully finished deck with outdoor kitchen and waterfall work bench made from recycled timber. The glass-fenced pool features hand-cut bluestone pavers. Rough-sawn, vertical silvertop ash timber cladding surrounds the fully-finished worker’s shed-cum-studio at the rear of the block. This large space has heat and sound insulation, double glazing and three-phase power. If outside is beautiful, inside is gorgeous. Enter to a Tasmanian oak staircase that seems to float above hardwood floorboards. The first room on entry uses hardwood for

in-wall sliders to a large study. A theatre room follows, currently set up as an office. Pass the first powder room to access the kitchen and family-meals area, which has Stegbar-built timber-framed picture windows. The kitchen’s 600mm Caeserstone benchtops sit above shadow-line 2pac cabinetry, there’s a Tecknika gas cooktop and dual Tecknika ovens. Porcelain tiles and a butler’s pantry link to the laundry, and the entry to the fully-lined and extended double garage with eight storage cupboards. Up the stairs, there’s a large rumpus

The main bedroom features an open-style en suite with floating walls, porcelain tiling, a freestanding bath and twin vanity. Twin walk-in wardrobes dovetail the main bedroom, which fits a king-size bed comfortably with room to spare. FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir revisits hot jam doughnuts – a street food tradition Like everyone else, I loved Nick and his Olympic Doughnuts. Or rather, in this case, I really loved the idea of Nick and his doughnuts – that he was and is such a legend, and that Olympic Doughnuts was such a Footscray institution, even surviving the revamp of Footscray station. I thought the doughnuts were OK, but found the jam they were stuffed with amounting to not much more than, well, syrup. This, as a pal has pointed out to me, is a ridiculous attitude to hold. She’s right – this was not your hipster cafe selling vanilla cream-stuffed doughnuts for $5. These were your street-food doughnuts – cheap, fresh and hot. Well now, Nick has retired – and much to the community’s widespread delight, a new doughnut operation has taken up the space at the station. So I take it for a spin. The doughnuts are … cheap, fresh and hot – although the jam is, well, syrup. Or perhaps it is the rather high cooking heat that transforms any jam into … sticky lava. It matters not. I do good through a deal that provides me two doughnuts and a pretty good coffee for $5. And on a sunny Indian summer’s afternoon, the station plaza has become a fine place to linger a while, watching the ebb and flow. There’s a bench seat directly opposite the doughnut shop – the convenience store next door even had a couple of tables and chairs out.

FOOTSCRAY DOUGHTNUTS & COFFEE Footscray Station

Much commentary, some of it fuelled by recent vandalism, has surrounded speculation that Footscray is well on its way – through gentrification and hipsterisation – of becoming a Fitzroy clone. Accompanied by my doughnuts and coffee at spotty, gritty Footscray central, such a scenario seems preposterous. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Spotswood takes the points in a thriller

Altona coach Saade Ghazi will be looking to expose any weaknesses that top-of-the-ladder Werribee Districts might have in Saturday’s must-win round four blockbuster. (Dennis Manktelow)

Spotswood will travel to Albion on Saturday to face former player-coach Chris O’Keefe, who is now in charge of the Cats. Altona, which is a luckless 0-3 after three games, get offered no respite in round four,

having to face ladder-leader Werribee Districts at Grant Reserve on Saturday. In division 2, Newport Power was competitive for three quarters against North Footscray in its first game since promotion from the third tier before running out of legs to lose by 50 points at Bryan Martyn Oval. Leading by 14 points entering the last quarter, North Footscray piled on 10 goals to four in the final stanza to record a runaway win. Yarraville-Seddon was dominant after half-time in a 48-point win over Manor Lakes at Howqua Reserve. Scott Miller and Chris Topalidis booted three goals apiece for the Eagles. West Footscray led at half-time against Albanvale, but wound up losing by 18 points in a closely fought contest at Robert Bruce Oval. In division 3, Laverton Magpies were thrashed on home soil by the Wyndham Suns to the tune of 73 points. Sam Young booted three goals for the Magpies. Lance Jenkinson

Magpies show their class By Lance Jenkinson Parkside was just happy to collect the four premiership points from a 35-point road win over Sunshine Heights in the Western Region Football League division 3 and move on. The Magpies took care of business with professionalism, winning a hard-fought game that most pundits pencilled in as a victory for the flag fancy and doing so in a comprehensive manner. It took a while for Parkside’s class to show on the scoreboard – it was still game-on late in the third quarter – but the Magpies eventually kicked clear. Magpies coach Nick Condos lauded the fight of the undermanned Heights, who made life difficult for his side for most of the match, despite having a heavy injury toll during the game. “I rate them really highly,” Condos said. “They really served it up to us. “It was a real contested and hard game of footy.” Parkside already has the look of a premiership contender. The Magpies are 2-0 and sitting on top of the ladder with a sky-high percentage of 332. “I’m a great believer that it’s what you do early in the season that sets you up for later on,” Condos said. New recruit Jason Cloke is in ominous form for Parkside. Cloke has 13 goals in two games, including four in the win over the Heights. Read the fine print closely, Cloke could have had another bag against the Heights, but kicked eight behinds. Bad kicking for goal plagued Parkside, with Matthew Shepperbottom one of the other culprits, kicking 1.7. While the end product was left wanting, Condos was not complaining about the build-up play, driven largely by star midfielders Justin Dorward and Chris Muratore. “We’re getting entries in and our midfield is working really hard,” Condos said. “We’re lucky that we’ve got a number of players that go through the midfield now. “You can’t put you eggs all in one basket because you know they’ll target those guys week in week out, so other guys need to step up, which at this stage they’re doing. “We’re getting enough supply in there and giving our forwards enough of an opportunity to kick a winning score.” Parkside has another tricky trip this Saturday, paying a visit to the Wyndham Suns at Goddard Street Reserve.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Colin

Newcombe is a loved and respected figure in the western suburbs sporting community and well beyond, judging by the feedback from everyone involved in the Col from Colac Gala held last week. Local cricket legend Barry Watson visited Col in hospital the day after to officially bestow the life memberships of Football Integration Development Association and the Sunshine & Western Region Sports Club that were announced on the night. Col and his family were delighted and as you would expect, humble as always. His wife, Cherie, and daughter Taylah have been touched by the outpouring of affection for Col, as has the man himself. The family has a tough road ahead and we wish them well.

■ Fred

Goldsmith’s passing recently reminded everyone what a champion footballer he was. You don’t see many players win a Brownlow playing full-back, but Freddie did. Then he went on to be a star at the other end of the ground, making the South Melbourne Team of the Century and its Hall of Fame. Spotswood great Len Murphy remembers Fred’s record at the Woodsmen, for whom he played in two under-18 premierships and one day kicked 29 goals in a game. I had the pleasure of interviewing Fred a few times and he was as sharp as a tack and a great character. RIP.

■I

bumped into former Bulldogs star Daniel Cross in a Hoppers Crossing furniture store recently with his wife, Sam, and their young daughter. Crossy still looks as fit as he did in the days he played at Whitten Oval. These days he is at the Melbourne Football Club in development and rehab and still enjoying a kick in country footy back at his original club, Albury.

■ One

of the more amusing parts of the celebration of Bobby Murphy’s 300th game for the Bulldogs came pre-game when the giant screen at Etihad Stadium proclaimed that all music being played had been selected by the man himself. At the time the graphic came on the screen, Dusty Springfield’s Son of a Preacher Man was playing. I smiled at both as Bobby’s music taste is often questioned by the young players. Also because Bobby’s parents – John and Monica – belonged to Catholic orders when they met. John was a priest and Monica a nun. Typical Bob – that’s why we love him. Kevin Hillier

Spotswood has produced three finals-type wins to start the Western Region Football League division 1 season. The Woodsmen remain one of only two undefeated sides in the competition, along with Werribee Districts, and are beginning to emerge as a premiership contender. Wins over the improving Sunshine Kangaroos on the road, four-peat premiers Deer Park and the highly-rated Altona have given new coach Anthony Eames the perfect start to life at The Avenue. Spotswood had to dig deep to secure a three-point win over Altona at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Woodsmen, off-colour with just three goals in the first half, came roaring back from a 26-point half-time deficit to snatch an unforgettable come-from-behind win over one of their biggest rivals. Murray Boyd, Jordan Bennett and Dylan Callard booted two goals apiece for the Woodsmen.

Bulldogs put Tigers to the sword

Footscray half-back Bailey Williams wraps up Werribee midfielder Ryan Clarke in a tackle. (Shawn Smits)

Five goals from rookie Fergus Greene was the catalyst to Footscray’s runaway 51-point win over Werribee Tigers in the Victorian Football League at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday evening. Greene, the 70th pick in the 2016 AFL National Draft, only needed 10 possessions and six marks to have a major influence over the game. The former Bendigo Pioneers medium-sized forward has kicked eight goals in two games. It was Footscray’s first win of their premiership defence, having fallen short by less than a kick in round one against Box Hill Hawks. That means it was Steve Grace’s first win since taking over as coach of the Bulldogs. Bailey Williams was mighty impressive for the Bulldogs once again, racking up 31 disposals, 13 marks and three tackles in a man of the match performance. Williams will come under consideration

for a call-up to the Western Bulldogs when the selectors gather to pick their side for the massive clash with GWS Giants in Canberra on Friday night. Mitch Honeychurch, Bailey Dale and Caleb Daniel were all prolific ball winners for Footscray. The trio also worked hard defensively too, which is just as important in the modern game. Tim English is a raw young ruck prospect, but the Western Australian is showing improvement each time he sets foot on a VFL field. The Bulldogs top draft pick from last year had 31 hit-outs to go with 16 possessions and five marks. The Dogs had Werribee at arm’s length for most of the day, but rammed home their advantage with a six-goal-to-two last quarter. Footscray will host winless North Ballarat at the Whitten Oval on Friday at 7pm. Meanwhile, Williamstown trailed at every

change before going down to the Northern Blues by 21 points at Preston City Oval on Saturday. Adam Marcon capped a standout performance for the Seagulls with two goals. Marcon finished with 20 possessions and seven tackles in a good two-way showing. Ayce Cordy and Arryn Siposs were the Gulls other multiple goalkickers with two each. Williamstown will be hoping to recover from that setback when it hosts Box Hill Hawks at Burbank Oval on Sunday from 2pm. In the TAC Cup, Western Jets came from 21 points down at three-quarter time to beat Gippsland Power by four points in a thriller at Burbank Oval on Saturday. Western Jets will travel to the Norm Minns Oval in Wangaratta on Saturday to face the high flying Murray Bushrangers. Lance Jenkinson

Glory prospects excite By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville Glory is enduring some teething problems as it promotes youth and implements a new style of play under first-year coach Tony Merakis in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. The Glory is finding ways to score, but keeping the goals out is another story – as was plain to see in Saturday’s 6-3 loss to Keilor Park on the road at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve. But Merakis is not losing heart, despite his side having a single win in four games. “The scoreline seems big from a statistical point of view, but from a playing point of view, we managed to do some really good things,” he said. “As a club, we’re going through a rebuilding phase, and as part of rebuilding and restructuring comes with it a club style and philosophy of play. “It’s experimental with some players to find out who can perform and execute. “We should get there in the next few weeks, where we start seeing some better results go our way and the team performance improving.” Merakis will continue to implore his players to excite with their football. “We want a young, energetic side,” he said. “One of our strengths is that we’re hungry to score. We want to provide a really good flavour of football so people can come and watch.” The Glory is averaging two and a half goals a game, but its goals against average is unsustainable if it wants to stay among the big boys of state league. The Glory is letting in a whopping 3.75 goals a game – not a formula for success. Merakis knows his players needs to fix that area of their game, but with an inexperienced defence, one that was put together in the summer, it will take time for the backline to mesh. “You’ll find that most teams that are good at not conceding have got good experienced players or have been together as a unit for long enough – and we haven’t,” he said. “We’ve got some new players that have played together for no more than two or three games. “The way you get better is to play longer as a team together. We’ve just got to get more games under our belt. Our effort is always there – even ’till the end.” Yarraville will face title contender Altona Magic in a local derby at Paisley Park on Saturday evening with nothing to lose. Nobody is expecting the Glory to pull off an upset, but the players are not lacking in self confidence despite the disparity in the standings. “We’re not going to sit back and be dictated to,” Merakis said. “We’re going to go out there and try to score goals. That’s been our philosophy all along. We’ve been talking about this game for weeks – the players are excited for it.”

Adamson Ajayi fired in a double for the Altona Magic. (Shawn Smits)

Altona Magic right at home Altona Magic is successfully defending its territory in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 north-west. Four home games to start the season have resulted in four wins for the title-contending Magic. The latest victims were the Preston Lions, the Magic winning 2-1 in the friendly confines of Paisley Park on Saturday night. One player relishing the home comforts is Magic striker Adamson Ajayi. Ajayi fired in a double to sink the Lions, taking his tally to a league-best six goals in four games. Altona will play a fifth straight games at home when it hosts Yarraville Glory in the local derby on Saturday night. Altona East Phoenix registered its first point of the season in a 2-2 draw with Essendon Royals. The Phoenix came back from two goals down at half-time. Altona City is living up to its reputation as one of the sides to beat in state league 2. City kept in touch with top two sides Hoppers Crossing and Fitzroy City with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Sporting Whittlesea at Kim Reserve. Williamstown beat Epping City 2-1 at JT Gray Reserve. Goals to Daniel Trajkoski and Bobby Lojanica saw the Blues claim their third win in four games. The second-placed Blues will face top-of-the-ladder La Trobe University on the road on Saturday. Melbourne City is still without a point after a 4-2 loss to Fawkner at Edwards Reserve. Reuben Agyei Danso found the back of the net for Yarraville Glory. (Shawn Smits)
