Plaques restored By Benjamin Millar More than 100 bronze plaques stolen from the Footscray Memorial Garden have been replaced in time for this year’s Anzac Day. Thieves stole 111 bronze memorial plaques around Remembrance Day in 2015, causing damage estimated to cost more than $50,000. At the time of the theft, Footscray RSL president Long Viet Nguyen said that it was devastating for the families of the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for Australia. The families had paid for the plaques. Maribyrnong council has securely set 225 bronze memorial plaques in the garden, including 111 replacement plaques and 114 that had been removed for safe-keeping following the theft. The Memorial Column on the Avenue of Honour has also been restored, with improvements including a recast bronze wreath. The column, on Geelong Road near Footscray Park, was built in 1947 as a tribute to fallen World War I and World War II soldiers. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the state government provided $18,000 towards its restoration. “It’s great to see the Footscray Avenue of Honour restored to its former glory – honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” she said. “We know how important this is to our community, and we want to ensure that future generations can visit this memorial and pay their respects to our local servicemen and women.” Maribyrnong council has also finished planting 147 gum trees as part of the Anzac Centenary Boulevard Project. Mayor Catherine Cumming said it was important to complete the restorations in time for Anzac Day. “The Avenue of Honour is an area of great significance to council and our community and serves as an ongoing reminder of the devastating impact the two world wars had on our community.” Vana Thai, Canh Lam, Carmel Taig, Catherine Cumming, Long Viet Nguyen and Peter Doody at the Footscray Memorial Garden.

Bans split communities Hobsons Bay council has lashed out at the state government over its West Gate Tunnel project, saying it has pitted residents north and south of the bridge against each other over truck bans. The council wants trucks banned in Blackshaws Road, Hudsons Road, High Street, Mason Street and Kororoit Creek Road east of Millers Road, to stop toll-dodgers from the new truck-only tolled section of the West Gate Freeway. It also wants an exemption for the proposed truck ban along Francis Street, Yarraville, for a handful of eastbound trucks travelling to and from the Spotswood industrial precinct. Greens’ councillor Jonathon Marsden said the state government had used a “divide and conquer strategy” to pit the Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG) against Spotswood residents. “There’s a lack of transparency in community relations which leads to infighting among the various stakeholders, and we see that, evidently, between MTAG and the Spotswood residents,” he said. Cr Angela Altair said: “The poor old communities, because they’re trying to protect their own patch, are almost at loggerheads with each other”. “It’s grossly unfair,” she said. “Overall, I think it’s been a very demoralising exercise. “Sometimes you’ve got to wonder, whose side are these governments on?” Cr Peter Hemphill said Transurban should fund new rooms for Spotswood football and cricket clubs and Westgate Golf Club, which were impacted by the project. “I think they [Transurban] are going to be the biggest beneficiaries of all this,” he said. “I think they’re going to be making a killing out of this, and it’s only fair that they compensate us for the damage that they’re going to do in our local community.” Spotswood Football Club president and Spotswood Sporting Club board member Alan Given posted on Facebook that it was disappointing to hear suggestions on social media that they had been “complicit” in regards to the project. He posted that the club was talking about this back in 2015, trying to garner community support for McLean Reserve and the preservation of local sports clubs. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan confirmed to Star Weekly that a shared clubroom would be funded as part of the project. “Our local sports clubs are a vital part of our community and they’ll continue to operate while the West Gate Tunnel is being built.”

Owners of Footscray’s fire-razed Little Saigon market have an extra year to begin redeveloping the site. Fire tore through the iconic Footscray market last December, destroying more than half the building and causing more than $12 million damage. Prior to the fire, the owners had planned its redevelopment, once the lease expired on the supermarket and tenants had vacated, which was to be earlier this month. A 2012 planning permit allows a ground level market topped by two apartment towers up to 12 storeys high, with 260 dwellings. The permit, which was due to expire last week, has already been extended twice. Maribyrnong council’s planning services director Nigel Higgins said an application to extend the permit for Little Saigon’s redevelopment a third time was given on March 30. “An extension of one year was granted as it met the parameters set out in a number of Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal decisions and zoning requirements,” Mr Higgins said. Owner Binh Le said the redevelopment will go ahead, but the site’s immediate future is still “up in the air”. A clean-up notice was issued in January, after demolition approval was obtained. Mr Higgins said the site is being monitored regularly to ensure no adverse issues or impacts.

It’s an isolated place, inhabited by snakes, but homeless people are pitching tents on the north side of Altona’s Cherry Lake. Last week, a tent left in a thick copse of trees was seemingly abandoned. Melbourne Water’s Gerard Morel, whose job it is to manage the land and waterways, said he had left notes at the last two tents he had come across to try to get in touch with the people. Mr Morel said he had managed to speak to one of the tent dwellers – Dave, aged in his early 20s. “The issue for him was, he had a little kelpie, and he couldn’t get into emergency accommodation with his dog,” he said. “And, in a way that I can absolutely understand, he wasn’t prepared to abandon his dog – so here he was stuck in this tent in the woods off Cherry Lake.” At another isolated Altona site, Truganina Swamp, a small path leads under one thicket. And there we stumble across a little lean-to with a couch and coffee table, and a tarpaulin overhead. “Sometimes, you can just tell there’s something not quite right – you can see a path that goes in, it’s a little bit of a sign of disturbance,” Mr Morel said. Rhonda Collins, manager of Altona-based homelessness service Latitude, said there was no easy solution to homelessness. “They’ve always been here in some shape or form because, generally speaking, they can be very transient,” she said. “Quite often, it is because they’ve been burnt by the system several times. “All they’re really going to be offered is a rooming house.” Ms Collins said it was extremely difficult for

Industry centre grows new jobs By Alesha Capone

Young author’s mystery

“Less than three years ago, the land that the Drystone Industrial Estate sits on was little more than an empty paddock,” Cr Villagonzalo said. “Today, it is home to some of our biggest employers. “With Wyndham experiencing the second highest population growth of any municipality in Australia – and 10,000 moving here in 2015 alone, business and employment opportunities like this new industrial estate – will undoubtedly have a positive impact.” Wyndham mayor Cr Henry Barlow said he would like to see more businesses set up in Wyndham, to provide much-needed employment opportunities for residents.

Intergalactic adventures await readers of the debut publication of a budding Footscray author. Lucas Nguyen, 10, said he had never been an avid reader or writer in the past, but everything changed when he met children’s author David Lawrence during a school visit. “I never thought a kid could write and publish a book, but after he came to our school I just researched what to do,” Lucas said. “I didn’t really like writing at the start, but I like it now because it’s fun, and you get to learn a lot when you’re writing a story.” Lucas doesn’t want to give too much away about the twists and turns of the plot in The Mystery of Greenworm Primary School, but

he hints readers may encounter aliens and cosmonauts along the way. His book, self-published through Amazon, has struck a chord with his friends and family. It has even been picked up by the Maribyrnong library service and is available for borrowing at Footscray library. Lucas plans to keep writing and publishing and is even contemplating a career as an author – although it will have to be in his spare time, if he achieves his dream of becoming a doctor. The Mystery of Greenworm Primary School will be officially launched at Maribyrnong library at 3pm, Sunday, April 23.

A new logistics hub at Truganina is gearing up to bring as many as 2000 new jobs online. Earlier this month, Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan went along for the official launch of the Drystone Industrial Estate on Foundation Road. Mr Noonan described the 95 hectare hub – which is a joint venture between the Charter Hall Group and Commercial and Industrial Property – as an “outstanding industrial estate”. The $440 million centre is already home to a Woolworths meat processing facility, warehouses for Target and The Reject Shop, Laverton Cold Storage, Rand Transport and Couriers Please. Mr Noonan said these businesses have employed 1200 people so far. Charter Hall Group’s managing director and chief executive David Harrison said construction at the new hub was about “55 per cent complete”. He said the group hopes the entire estate will soon be filled, with 400 jobs being created during its construction. As more businesses move into the estate, Mr Harrison estimated there would be a further 800 new jobs created in the transport, warehousing and logistics sectors. “This is a massive investment we’ve made here at the Drystone Estate,” Mr Harrison said. Wyndham councillor Walter Villagonzalo, who is the council’s future focused economy portfolio holder, said this investment would benefit the fast-growing municipality.

Bulldogs lead the way The Western Bulldogs Leadership Project is officially under way. Now in its fifth year, the program has helped more than 250 young people in years 9 and 10 build confidence, make new friendships and develop skills towards becoming future leaders in their community. Participant Brandon Rogers reports from a recent weekend camp run as part of the program: “This weekend myself and over 100 other participants attended a camp run by the Western Bulldogs as a part of the Western Bulldogs Leadership Program. “On the first day myself and other participants attend the Grand Final rematch between the Western Bulldogs and the Sydney

Swans. The love of the Bulldogs unified participants, therefore creating friendships. “The second day consisted of multiple activities that would build friendships and skills. On the final day, we all met up at Victoria University Whitten Oval and set goals for ourselves to hopefully meet in September, when the program ends. “We also went on a tour of VU Whitten Oval and learnt about the facilities and players. “Through the Leadership Project camp, I obtained new friendships, built skills and, as mentioned before, adopted new concepts to live my life by.” To follow regular updates from Western Bulldogs Leadership Program participants, visit www.starweekly.com.au.

‘Itchy’ tree bid rejected

GEOFF DOUGALL

The navy’s story retold By Goya Dmytryshchak A travelling exhibition that looks at the role of the Royal Australian Navy in World War I has arrived in Williamstown. The exhibition by the Australian National Maritime Museum, War at Sea – the Navy in WWI, features 10 panels about the personal WWI experiences of Australian sailors drawn from diaries, ship logs and letters home. It tells the story of the country’s first submarine, AE1, which disappeared without a trace of either the vessel or its 35 hands.

Visitors can also learn about Australia’s second submarine, AE2, which was the first Allied vessel to breach the Dardanelles in Turkey in April, 1915. Local maritime historian Geoff Dougall said Seaworks had built its own display around the exhibition to highlight Williamstown’s naval history. “What we’re trying to get across is that Williamstown was the birthplace of the Royal Australian Navy,” he said. “People still think that it was Sydney, but it wasn’t.

“The Victorian Colonial Navy had more ships than any other colonial state put together. “That story’s important to Williamstown … the Williamstown brigade and the Port Melbourne brigade were the run-ups to get prepared for World War I. “Without that, we wouldn’t have had any sailors that were accustomed to warfare.” War at Sea – the Navy in WWI will run at Seaworks Maritime Discovery Centre, 82 Nelson Place, Williamstown, until Wednesday, May 31.

Hobsons Bay council last week rejected calls for the removal of 45 “itchy bomb” trees from Williamstown’s Bayview Street and other locations around the municipality. In a recent petition, Tracey Wallace collected 62 signatures calling on the council to remove the Norfolk Island hibiscus trees from Bayview and surrounding streets, saying they could trigger asthma. She said they caused skin, throat and potentially lung irritation from sharp fibres released by their seedpods. Last week’s council meeting heard that removing the trees from Bayview Street would cost about $30,000, while removing all 1500 across the municipality and replacing them would cost $1 million. The meeting heard that the population of the species had been reduced in the past 17 years, it was not a preferred tree and was not re-planted when removed. Councillors accepted an officer’s report that stated: “Council is not aware of any evidence that suggests that these trees cause any respiratory conditions or any other health concerns outside of those normally associated with trees (pollen etc) other than skin irritation once contact has been made to open seed pods.” Councillors agreed to increase street sweeping when seedpods were at their worst. Historic sale a run-out By Benjamin Millar The owners of a slice of Seddon history knew they were on a good wicket when they bought a converted cricket bat factory. Their townhouse in the former RM Crockett & Sons factory on Charles Street will hit prospective purchasers for six when it goes on the market for the first time in a decade. As the owners prepare to relocate overseas, interest in the property is predicted from local, national and even international buyers. Sotheby’s agent Grant Giordano said the conversion of the former factory was handled in a way that maintains a strong sense of its rich history. “This is the first property we have listed in the west,” he said. “This property is thought-provoking, but offers a luxurious lifestyle. “The aesthetic and the functional works together.” Mr Giordano said buyers from all over Melbourne are looking to the inner-west for value in what has become an enviable location. “If this property was in Prahran or South Yarra, it would go for two or three times the price.” The first open house for 2/138 Charles Street, Seddon will be held this Saturday.

Footscray rides a shaw thing Savour the sights and smells of Footscray in style by roaming local roads in a rickshaw. Starting this Saturday, students from Victoria University sports groups will lead the free tours for the next four months. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the rickshaw rides and other tours in the pipeline were a way of celebrating Footscray’s rich history and culture. “Footscray is the beating heart of the inner west, steeped in history and home to a fascinating blend of international cultures, delicious cuisines and cutting-edge arts,” she said. “If walking’s not your thing, grab a free rickshaw ride.” The tours will depart from Footscray station forecourt and the corner of Byron and Leeds streets, 9am-1pm, on Saturday April 22, May 27, June 17 and July 22. 9 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 19, 2017

anzac day

April 25th 2017

For the Fallen With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, [Australia] mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond [Australia’s] foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain.

Laurence Binyon composed this celebrated poem, the fourth stanza of which is recited every Anzac Day, as he sat on a Cornish cliff-top looking out to sea. It was written in mid-September, 1914, a few weeks after the outbreak of World War I as the British Expeditionary Force was suffering casualties at the Battle of Mons, the Battle of Le Cateau and the First Battle of the Marne. Laurence said the lines from the famous stanza were the first that came to him. Too old to enlist, he worked as a medical orderly for the Red Cross. He lost his brother-in-law and several close friends in the war.

If home is where the heart is, then this property is all heart. With a floorplan designed for families, and with restored art deco details throughout, it has four sizeable bedrooms (with gorgeous period windows) and two living areas, both featuring fireplaces, high ceilings and period cornicing. The contemporary kitchen is neat and shows the original oven cavity with post-war tiling. On a block of about 837 square metres, this property has a deep backyard with a designated entertainment area, and a sizeable front yard, providing plenty of space for the kids to run. There is also a shed, single carport and single garage. Close to schools, shops and transport, this one is worth inspecting.

A big opportunity just came onto the market at South Kingsville. On a very large block, this is a great redevelopment prospect (STCA), and equally right for a dream home. It boasts a wide 20-metre street frontage and an impressive 730 square-metre block. There is scope for a multi-dwelling development, or renovate the existing dwelling, which has three fitted bedrooms (main with en suite), a 1970s galley kitchen complete with cork ceiling and high gloss, bright orange tile splashback, a family-meals area and sunroom overlooking a large backyard. There is also a brick lock-up double garage and separate workshop, as well as an in-ground pool with concreted surround. With its fantastic South Kingsville location, cafes, boutique stores and the like are all nearby, and the CBD is only eight kilometres away.

NEWPORT 74 Alma Terrace, 3015 Williams: 9397 2000

This property is glamourous, understated, spacious and fashionable. It feels like a Malibu beach house, yet it’s located on the border of two of the most lauded postcodes in Melbourne — Newport and Williamstown. It’s a stroll away from Douglas Parade shopping and a lazy walk to The Strand and the waterfront. Built by Duobuilt’s Jess Nardella, designed by D.E Atlier architects and finished by a fashion stylist with a boho-minimalist aesthetic, the house is finished with taste, style and fashion-forward attention to detail. A in-ground solar-heated pool with spaces for entertaining, including a

Auction: April 29 at 12.30pm plumbed-in barbecue, is accessed through stunning floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors. Imagine entertaining in the expansive and envy-inducing open-plan living zone with double-height ceilings – or perhaps by the gas fireplace lounge or in the kitchen with huge square island bench with seating for three. The kitchen has marble benchtops and splashbacks with Smeg appliances, soft-closing cabinetry and a plumbed-in butler’s pantry (where the same finishes continue) with garage access. Ducted heating and cooling, video intercom, alarm, ceiling fans, built-in surround sound in the living zone and main

bedroom, pay TV wiring and a sprinkler system have all been seen to. Solid Tasmanian oak flooring has been used throughout the hall and main living area. Walk to the front of the property from the living zone and discover a cleverly concealed storage wall that slides open to the side of oversized floating Tasmanian oak steps. These lead to the main bedroom on the right. A large, open bedroom with floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors leading to the second outdoor entertaining area is a calming space. The walk-through-wardrobe opens up to the en suite with feature atrium and a double-sized frameless shower.

A full-sized laundry off the hall to the left is followed by the stunning main bathroom with a further atrium, free-standing bath and frameless shower. Three further, large bedrooms with 3.4-metre ceilings and bespoke built-in wardrobes and a second living room with angled ceiling (3.6-metres) complete this practical, no-fuss chic floorplan. The property has a single garage, off-street parking for two more cars and remote-controlled gate access. This Alma Terrace property sets a benchmark for style and quality in the postcode. FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds the truth really is in the eating ... We’re in Mr Griffiths for the poutine (French fries and cheese curds topped with gravy) – a dish we’ve never before eaten. But we’ve had plenty of loaded fries – and so far as I can tell, the Quebec-derived poutine could be the very first loaded fries. We order the regular poutine – called The Drummondville (small $7). I am perplexed and underwhelmed – the gravy and the curd lumps seem to add nothing to the fries. And the fries themselves seem lacklustre. Bennie loves them – cleaning the basket empty after I’ve grabbed a handful of fries untainted by the toppings. That figures – his eyes invariably light up when he sees the phrase “loaded fries” on a menu. Mine tend to glaze over. My argument is simple: Why ruin fries with toppings that make them soggy? So in fairness to Mr Griffiths, I’d say that even a serve a poutine fan deems of the very highest order would do nothing for me. Mr Griffiths is a newish and welcome addition to Macaulay Road. It’s a cool room, already with a relaxed neighbourhood vibe about it. Beer is big here and the place is done out in Melbourne black. It appears to be a hit – a previous mid-week attempt to try the food came to nothing as the place was packed. If poutine is your thing, there are variations to be had that include the likes of fried chicken, hot sauce, pickles, onion, bacon, maple syrup and more.

MR GRIFFITHS ALIBIS & LIBATIONS A ATIONS Address: 524 Macaulay Road, Kensington Phone: 9372 3978 It stands to reason poutine (not offered by many places in Melbourne) is a stronger selling point here than the burgers (sold by every man and his dog). But as it turns out, our burgers are the highlight of our Saturday lunch – a judgment with which even my poutine-loving son agrees. He loves the crisp ‘n’ crunch of the beautifully cooked chook in his Buffalo chicken burger ($12.50) with its Frank’s red hot, lettuce and ranch sauce. My Bacon G’s burger deluxe ($12.50) is equally impressive with its beef, bacon, tomato, lettuce, pickles, onion and G sauce. And unadvertised cheese. Big statement: This is the best bacon I can recall ever enjoying in a burger – it’s both chewy and crunchy, it’s thick-cut and its flavour imbues almost every mouthful. As Bennie points out, there is nothing extravagant or sophisticated about our burgers. Indeed, at first blush they appeared to be on the plain and modest side. But the truth is in the eating – they win because good ingredients have been done well. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Hot-shots flag WRFL’s winning intentions The Western Region Football League is hellbent on making it consecutive victories at the AFL Victoria Community Championships. The WRFL has named a star-studded initial squad of 50 players for next month’s clash with the Northern Football League. The squad includes Barry Priest Medal winners Kwame McHarg (Deer Park), Wayde Skipper (Hoppers Crossing), Matt Dean (Werribee Districts), Chris O’Keefe (Albion) and Tim Jenkins (St Albans). The strong representation from last year’s division 1 grand final clubs Deer Park (11) and Hoppers Crossing (10) – 21 players in all – shows how serious the clubs and players are about showcasing the best WRFL talent. Despite his new responsibilities as coach of

Spotswood, Anthony Eames is remaining in charge of the WRFL side this year. Eames, who spearheaded the league’s thrilling three-point win over Ballarat Football League at the Victoria University Whitten Oval last year, is excited to be working with the WRFL’s top talent again. “We have brought together a good mix of youth and experience,” he said. “We have a great blend of leaders from across the WRFL. “The players we have picked are the mainstays of our competition and we are certain that the spirit generated by this group of players will be positive.” The WRFL’s rich playing stocks will be further boosted by returning players Jason

Cloke (Parkside), Wayne Patak (Spotswood) and Steven Kennedy (Altona). Cloke, a former Collingwood player, kicked nine goals on debut for Parkside, while Patak and Kennedy have been dominant midfielders in the short time they have been at their respective clubs. “If Cloke is in good form, he can be as damaging as anyone, and both Patak and Kennedy are home-grown WRFL juniors who have won premierships for their respective clubs, so to have them involved will be exciting,” Eames said. The WRFL’s game against the NFL will be at Preston City Oval on Saturday, May 13. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ It will be a sad day for racing fans this Saturday when Williamstown’s Greg Miles retires as the No.1 Victorian thoroughbred race caller on RSN. Greg is one of the best we have ever had and we have had some pearlers – Bill Collins, Bert Bryant, Joe Brown and my own colleague, Bryan Martin, rate right up there. Greg’s career has included a remarkable 36 Melbourne Cups, including the Makybe Diva treble that prompted the now world famous phrase: “When a champion becomes a legend”. I have always been a huge fan of Greg and his calling. He is a very unassuming man who downplays his world-class gift. He will still be involved in the racing industry, but racing fans like me will miss his dulcet tones coming through the television and radio. Enjoy your retirement, Greg. ■ Even Rod O’Connor would admit he is a grumpy so-and-so at times. Let’s be honest – most of the time. But even he was smiling when recently presented with life membership of the Western Region Football league. The expression, “once a Parksider, always a Parksider”, sums up Rod’s dedication and passion for his football club. He arrived as playing coach in 1976 and since then has dedicated himself above and beyond the call of duty for the Parkers. The former Werribee ANZ bank manager has ruffled a few feathers along the way, but you can never deny his heart has always been in the right place. ■ Phillip Henderson, Adrian O’Donnell, Alan Parker, Noel Crump, Michael Gilbert, Daryl Jeffries and Dennis Lazaridis were also made WRFL life members under the 300-game provision introduced by the league a few years ago. Len “Spud” Murphy heads a committee that pores over the nominations from clubs and decides on the inductees. The seven this year certainly represent many clubs, as well as the umpiring fraternity.

Long-distance ambitions By Lance Jenkinson Julia Bourke could not have chosen a better time to leave our shores in pursuit of sports and academic excellence. The up-and-coming Western Athletics hammer thrower and shot putter lined up a sports scholarship with Illinois State University in the US last year, but since the Redbirds – as the ISU sports teams are nicknamed – signed Bourke, it’s fair to say her star has risen even higher. Bourke is coming off standout performances for Victoria on the national stage in the under-20 section at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney this month. The Werribee resident took out gold in the hammer throw and silver in the shot put. It was the first place in the hammer throw that turned heads. Bourke has taken the event seriously only for the past two years, mainly because of the pleading of coach Fernando Canepa, a top hammer thrower in his day, that she give it a go. “It was amazing to win because I’ve only been doing hammer properly for two seasons,” Bourke said. “Fernando was a hammer thrower

himself, so I didn’t have much of an option but to throw hammer, but it took him a bit longer to convince me to do it. “Once he did, it has almost become our main event.” Bourke is still raw in athletics. The 18-year-old, who trains at WestVic Academy of Sport’s Bacchus Marsh campus, has years of development and learning to come before she reaches her career peak. That is not stopping her from dreaming of representing Australia at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Bourke’s performances at the nationals did her prospects no harm. “The 2018 Commonwealth Games are really a stretch target,” she said. “It’s such a strange feeling sitting at training seriously discussing my legitimate chance of qualifying. “It’s going to depend on how much I can improve before December.” Bourke, who is studying for a bachelor of science degree, majoring in nursing, will arrive in Normal, Illinois, the home town of Illinois State University, later this year. She was impressed with the facilities on a tour of the campus during her enrolment.

The NCAA college sports competition will provide much tougher competition for her than what is available in Australia. “There’s no way I’d be able to have the same sort of access to the facilities and competition that I will have over there if I stayed here,” Bourke said. “I was talking to my coach the other day, and we were looking at some of their results … the distances that I’m throwing [that] put me in those top rankings in Australia wouldn’t even put me in the top 25 in America. “The level of competition is something we couldn’t even imagine here. “It will be amazing to push yourself because you’re going to have that competition day in and day out to compare yourself against.” Bourke is the April nominee of the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Bourke will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

■ I was lucky enough to be taken for a walk through the building site that is Avalon Airport Oval @ Chirnside Park last week to get a feel for how the redevelopment is going. After months of looking at drawings on paper, it was quite an eye-opener to see the new home of the Werribee Tigers taking shape. The size was what struck me first – it is enormous. While it will be home to the football and cricket clubs, the opportunities for the community to benefit are significant.

Son of a gun aims for the top By Lance Jenkinson

(Damian Visentini)

Wings spread, Falcons gather forces for the fray City West Falcons believe they will be in the mix again come Victorian Netball League finals. The Falcons have been a dominant team in recent years, their championship division side making the grand final last year, only to suffer an agonising one-goal loss to Melbourne University Lightning. The division 1 side won the premiership, though, while the under-19s also made finals. Falcons’ head coach Marg Lind said, overall, it had been a good off season. “As a club, we’ve been going well,” Lind said. “We’ve picked up quite a few under-19 players, and all three sides had good hit-outs in the practice match. “There’s been plenty of match play; we are pretty fit and looking ready to go. “I expect all three teams will be up there.” While the off season has been good overall for the club, it’s been disjointed for the championship division side. Recruit Stephanie Puopolo, along with Molly Jovic, Jacqui Newton and Maddy Balson, have been part of the Victorian Fury Australian Netball League team that finished up its season two weeks ago. Last year’s Margaret Caldow award-winner, Maggie Lind, has been in Adelaide as a training partner for Adelaide Thunderbirds. “The ANL players only come back next week … we haven’t seen them,” Lind said. “Steph was with Adelaide Thunderbirds and has come back to Melbourne. She’ll be goaling with Kath Knott. “Maddy and Molly have also been playing VNL, so I’m not sure how they’ll blend in. The fact they’ve been playing together means they should be fine. Maggie, we’ve only seen her occasionally; we will have her back for games.” Lind said while the off season disruption

Nick Stuhldreier, the son of a country football legend, is relishing the chance to skipper the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. Stuhldreier is working as a co-captain alongside teammate Luke Hitch as part of a four-player leadership group. “It’s a big honour being recognised as one of the best leaders in the region,” Stuhldreier said. “I was a bit shocked and it was pretty humbling being voted in by your peers. “It shows that you have the respect of your teammates.” Stuhldreier gives the Western Jets leadership set-up the thumbs up. The Jets opted to have representation in all three age groups that make up the side, giving a voice to the bottom-age 17-year-old players. “It’s good that we’ve got a spread across all the age groups because in the past it’s been left to the second-year players and the first year players have sometimes been scared to stand up,” he said. Stuhldreier believes sharing the captaincy is beneficial. The workload is not as much of a burden as it would be if an individual was named. “It’s not so much responsibility just left on one person and we both can bring things to the table.” Stuhldreier has mixed his leadership with good form on the field in the early rounds of the season. The 18-year-old has been in the Western Jets’ best players for his past two matches and was the stand-out for his side in the most recent game against Sandringham Dragons. “I started off slow first round, but the last two rounds I’ve started to built up some form,” he said.

Nick Stuhldreier was honoured to be named co-captain of the Western Jets this season.

Stuhldreier has taken on a new playing role for the Jets. Last year, the boy from Bacchus Marsh was used in a rebounding role off half-back, but this season he has graduated to the midfield. That versatility is probably what saw him earn a call-up to Vic Metro’s extended squad, in which he is hoping to survive the final cut. Stuhldreier and his brother, Ryley, a former Western Jet and once on Geelong’s VFL list, were born to play football. Their father, Chris, who has had a major influence on their football careers, was a country football legend for Kyabram in the Goulburn Valley Football League, which granted him hall of fame status last year, and for Lavington in the Ovens and Murray Football League. “Dad didn’t play at the highest level, but I think he kicked 100 goals for 10 years straight [including 171 in a single season in 1993] in the Goulburn Valley league and the Ovens and Murray league,” Nick said. “He got approached by a couple of [AFL] clubs, but he’s a police officer and at the time he was young, and it wasn’t really paying well to play, so he chose to stick with his career and played country footy and kicked close to 2000 goals.” Stuhldreier, though, would jump at the chance of an AFL career. The one-eyed Western Bulldogs fan said it was his dream to make it to the big league. The St Patrick’s College year 12 student was named the Jets’ best first-year player last season, but he wants to take his football up another level to be considered a draft chance. “It was good to be recognised last year, but I want to build on that this year,” he said. “I’m aiming to make it to the AFL.”

had been frustrating it was better than last season when ANL and VNL seasons clashed. She said the experiences all four players would bring back would benefit everyone. Joining Puopolo is Danielle Wilson, who comes to the Falcons from Southern Saints after moving to Newport. Lind said Wilson, who started her VNL career at the Falcons, would be a good inclusion in defence. Tahnysha Salanoa and Emily Post have been promoted from the division 1 side that won last year’s title. “Tee will be pushing to get court time, and it will be a tough year … she has a lot of potential and is currently part of the Samoa under-21 squad,” Lind said. “It’s a similar situation with Emily.” The Falcons start their season on April 26.
