Land rights story retold It’s a story that was hidden for too long. Coranderrk was a reserve outside present-day Healesville, established in 1863 by dispossessed Kulan clans in what had become the colony of Victoria. At a Victorian parliamentary inquiry in 1881, the men and women of Coranderrk took on the Aboriginal Protection Board to keep their land. Their story is told in Coranderrk, a play by Ilbijerri Theatre Co-operative and Belvoir that is touring Australia. The all-Indigenous cast was rehearsing in Footscray last week ahead of performances at Altona Theatre on May 18 and Footscray Community Arts Centre on May 26 and 27. Trevor Jamieson in the lead role, alongside Matthew Cooper, Ebony McGuire and Jesse Butler, said the play told the story of the first Aboriginal land rights activists. “They were the leading people, under William Barak … to see if they could get justice,” Jamieson said. “To this day – when you think about the Tent Embassy in Canberra or all those other different cities, and Aboriginal affairs – these guys back then were the first guys to put this out there.” Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander audiences are advised the play contains images of deceased people. A joint Melbourne University and Monash University study last year reported an average drop in takings of 24 per cent by Yarraville traders after paid parking was introduced. Footscray traders are divided over whether paid parking should return, but united in their view any parking fees in central Footscray must be matched in Yarraville. Footscray Traders Association president Stuart Lucca-Pope said businesses that needed customers on their premises for longer periods would prefer the machines stay switched off, while others are struggling from the lack of turnover.
“People are parking here all day and there are those who want a higher turnover and occupancy availability,” he said. “But they [meters] would also need to be switched back on in Yarraville – it needs to be uniform.” The introduction of paid parking in Yarraville in 2015 led to an acrimonious split of the former council and a physical assault on two councillors by a resident in the council chamber. The three councillors who voted for the introduction of paid parking – Grant Miles, Nam Quach and Cameron McDonald – did not contest last year’s election. 1219971-HM10-16
Maribyrnong council has lost close to $3.5 million in potential revenue since halting paid parking in central Footscray and Yarraville almost 18 months ago. Councillors will be briefed this month on a redrafted Destination Parking Management Policy, 12 months after the previous council voted down the then proposed policy as “vague” and lacking in detail. The redrafted policy has been developed in response to the 2015 freeze on parking meters that followed a ferocious backlash to their
introduction in Yarraville village in what was a bid to increase vehicle turnover. While the council has estimated $200,000 is lost for every month the machines remain off, it faces stiff resistance to any moves to switch the meters back on. Yarraville Traders Association president Chris Xanthis said the association was writing to the council to propose an alternative plan. “We are going to express our opposition to paid parking in Yarraville – we feel it should be going back to how it used to be,” he said. “It’s easy to introduce parking meters, but we believe there are other solutions.” 1182408-CG18-15

Accessible beach matting extended Due to popular demand, Council has decided to extend the availability of its 24/7 accessible beach matting at Williamstown until the end of April as well as undertake a trial of having the matting available all-year-round at Altona Beach. The beach matting, which was introduced as part of Council’s plan to make both beaches fully accessible by 2020, was originally intended to be stored away at the end of March until next summer. The matting has proved very popular with a broad range of people including wheelchair users, pram-pushers, people with walking frames and people wearing less beachfriendly shoes. The all-year-round trial at Altona Beach will provide Council with a further understanding of how the infrastructure responds to changes in weather as well as public demand.

Woman hurt in car-jacking spree across north-west A woman was kicked unconscious during a rampage by a gang of car-jackers in Melbourne’s north-west on Saturday. The two-hour crime spree, spanning four suburbs, ended at Brooklyn when a man filling up his car with petrol managed to talk the youths out of stealing his vehicle. Police say it started in Mickleham just before 3am when three males got out of a dark blue car and unsuccessfully tried to force their way inside a parked car in a Mount Ridley Road carpark. Police say about half-an-hour later, the same
group approached a 22-year-old man who was starting a shift at a Woolworths supermarket in Craigieburn. The victim, Nicolas Tonna, told Nine News that the men were armed with cricket bats and a knife. “I was approached by about three to four African males, all dressed in black, and faces covered and everything, and all brandishing weapons, asking for everything I have,” he said. They stole his wallet, phone and keys, and drove off in his 1998 Holden Commodore sedan, registration PGJ 268, which has not been recovered.
Five minutes later, the stolen car pulled up alongside a group of teenagers who were walking along Aitken Boulevard on the way to Craigieburn North McDonald’s. Police say that a 40-year-old woman who was picking up her teenage daughter intervened, and was hit in the head. A witness, Alex Drnford, told Seven News that one of the males swung a bat at the woman’s head, but missed. “Because she dodged it, the guy flung his foot up and kicked her in the head,” he said. The Craigieburn woman was knocked
unconscious before being taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The same group is then believed to have gone to a BP service station on Geelong Road at Brooklyn about 5am. Police say three males, armed with wooden bats and a knife, held up the store before demanding that a man at the bowser hand over his car keys. The man pleaded with the trio not to take his car, and they left him alone. Police are looking for four males of African or Pacific Islander appearance. Goya Dmytryshchak

Gerard Morel with the vandalised fence. (Damjan Janevski)
Dog act threatens wildlife By Goya Dmytryshchak It has been described as a mini Kakadu because of its important biodiversity, but someone with “malicious” intent is repeatedly vandalising the fence to let dogs into Altona’s Truganina Swamp. Letting dogs in has also let in rabbits and foxes, which threaten migratory birds from as far as Siberia and endangered species, such as the Altona skipper butterfly. Melbourne Water’s waterways and land officer Gerard Morel is at his wits’ end. He said the 2.7 kilometre fence had been cut in 18 places most recently. “We just finished repairing them on Friday and, since Friday, there’ve been at least five new
cuts,” he said while inspecting for new holes. “So, there’s some really malicious people, or maybe it’s just one person, around here.” So malicious in fact, that the wire of an unlocked gate was cut. Altona North police have been notified about the vandalism and will conduct patrols. Secret cameras have also been installed. The vandalism has Melbourne Water stumped as dog walkers have plenty of room outside the fenced-in area, which is a bird refuge within the flood-retarding basin. Almost by accident, it became a conservation area to protect endangered wildlife. “I call it a little cold Kakadu because it’s a semi-aquatic environment that used to cover a much bigger area of Altona,” Mr Morel said.
“They’re letting their dogs run in, which disturb the birds, and maybe they won’t breed or they’ll be too weak to fly back to where they came from. “But also it means foxes can get in, potentially wiping out the birds that are nesting on the ground. Rabbits go in there as well and eat the chaffy saw-sedge, which is the food plant of the Altona skipper butterfly, which is found nowhere else in the world. “There is so much other room in this massive park for people to walk their dogs.” One migratory bird that rests there, the Northern Siberian bar-tailed godwit, loses half its body weight flying 11,000 kilometres to Altona. If disturbed by dogs, it may never make a home. Report vandalism to police.
Public feedback is being sought on the use of CCTV cameras by Maribrynong council. A report to a recent ordinary council meeting noted the council operates more than 100 CCTV cameras. These include 32 cameras in the central Footscray area, which have been providing live 24-hour visual feeds to Footscray police station since 2011. Other cameras are used to protect council assets and visitors, as well as a small number of mobile CCTV cameras used to enforce local laws. While an agreement between Victoria Police and Maribyrnong council governs their use in central Footscray, the use of other CCTV cameras is not covered by a formal policy. The report noted public surveillance is still contentious, with evidence suggesting CCTV cameras are not as effective in preventing crime or antisocial behaviour in public places as expected. “Notwithstanding, CCTV can be very valuable in assisting police in gathering evidence for prosecution. CCTV cameras are also associated with a significant increase in people’s perception of safety, and are therefore a valuable tool when part of a suite of crime prevention initiatives,” the report stated. Star Weekly last year cited research showing central Footscray’s CCTV cameras have failed to reduce the sale or use of injecting drugs. The Burnet Institute study found the main effect of cameras was to shift heroin and ice use to streets further away, but Victoria Police and Maribyrnong council say cameras help police tackle violence and crime. Jail for footy club glass attack By Goya Dmytryshchak A man has been sentenced to nine months jail for “glassing” another man at a Laverton Football Club function. Jake Johnson pleaded guilty in the County Court to recklessly causing serious injury, failing to leave licensed premises and behaving in a riotous manner in relation to an incident on September 10 last year.
Judge Jim Montgomery said in court that Johnson had been drinking and using the drug MDMA (ecstasy). “As a result of that, you, during the course of the evening, grabbed a pot glass off a table with your right hand and smashed it in to the left side of [the victim’s] face,” Judge Montgomery said. “Prior to that, he had walked towards you with his arms slightly out, as if to say: ‘What’s
going on,’ the precursor being some mild verbal altercation between groups of people.” Judge Montgomery said the victim had permanent scarring on the left side of his face as a result of the incident. “Glassing at football club nights by people who are affected by alcohol is far too common an occurrence in our society, and has been for a long period of time,” the judge said.
“People who do such things must expect to receive a substantial period of imprisonment.” Johnson was also sentenced to a two-year community corrections order and drug and alcohol treatment on release from jail. A special restriction is that he cannot consume alcohol. He was also required to have his mouth scraped to provide a forensic sample for Victoria’s DNA database.
Giant statement on climate change Newport artist Robert Hague is making his mark around Melbourne with his ‘paste-ups’ going on walls in Hosier Lane and other places. The paste-ups are reproductions of his original hand-printed lithograph, titled Colossus (after Goya), part of the Climarte exhibition at MARS Gallery in Windsor. Hague said his work depicted Francisco de Goya’s giant turning his head, disturbed. “He sits naked within a distant landscape since lost to catastrophic environmental change … our childhood and the world in which we are born, they are fragile things that so often we fail to value until they are lost – this is a deeply personal work (I am Goya’s giant) – about the world that I left behind.” To coincide with Hague’s exhibition, MARS Gallery will have a Goya’s Giant paste-up 6.5 metres in diameter. Details of Climarte’s ART+CLIMATE = CHANGE exhibition 2017 are at artclimatechange.org

The rich rewards of volunteering are not lost on Footscray’s Sahil Puri. Coming to Australia in 2013 as an international student, Mr Puri wanted to connect with the area he would call home. “I started volunteering when I first came to Australia, as I thought it was the best way to get involved,” he said. “I fell in love with it, and volunteering became my passion.” Mr Puri, 22, has volunteered as a Shout Out speaker with the Centre for Multicultural Youth, and served as vice-president of the International Student Association at Victoria University. He undertook his studies in IT, but has since turned his attention to working in the
“very rewarding” field of youth work. Mr Puri said international students come to Australia seeking opportunities, but face a number of hardships and often struggle to find work after graduation. Speaking last week as part of National Youth Week, he is keen to address what he calls the ‘bystander culture’ and the need to speak up for what is right. “Most people in Australia are welcoming, but everyone has a different experience. When a bystander speaks up for someone, it is really welcoming someone and saying you have equal rights.” Benjamin Millar

Bird’s eye view of the bay By Goya Dmytryshchak The story of how Gordon Bird’s book on Williamstown came about is a tale in itself. The book – Pubs, Schools, Churches and Williamstown – contains 120 pages of photos, information and anecdotes from when Bird lived on the Esplanade from the early 1930s to the late 1950s. About 15 years ago, at the start of his quest to gauge interest in such a book, Bird visited Book and Paper, which is now Williamstown’s last remaining bookshop, and the outlet where his book is sold. At the time, the bookstore directed him to local maritime historian and author Geoff Dougall. Bird recounts his conversation with Mr Dougall the following day. “I told him who I was and that I had lived at Williamstown on the Esplanade for 25 years, and dad had lived there all of his married life, and he was 100 years and six months when he died.” Bird then told Mr Dougall the Williamstown address where his father was born. “He came back and said: That is where I live; you had better come down and see me.” At Mr Dougall’s house, Bird sifted through large volumes of books gifted to him by another historian, Bob Leek. From there, Bird’s own book started to materialise in his mind. “There was a lot of visiting many of the old people of the town, but I also had the memories of stories from my dad and his mum, who migrated to Williamstown from Scotland when she was three, and who died at her Williamstown home aged 94 in the 1940s,” he said. “My mother and her parents were also old town people and supplied memories to me, too.”

Plans fail the parking test A ‘greedy’ plan to redevelop a Footscray street has been sent packing by Maribyrnong councillors. Council officers had recommended approving five two-bedroom townhouses at 47-49 Stafford Street, despite only three car spaces being included in the plans. Speaking for the applicant, town planner Mark Waldon told councillors the proposal was “a very good fit” for council policies and the streetscape. “We felt this respects the modest cottages along Stafford Street,” he said. “We think this is respectful of the neighbourhood character.” But speaking on behalf of residents, Russell Hunt said the proposal was “a lazy design” and an overdevelopment of the site. “We are getting a great number of these lazy developments that undermine the fabric of the community and the fabric of the street,” he said. Councillors unanimously agreed, and rejected the development application. Mayor Catherine Cumming said the proposal was out of keeping with the prevailing neighbourhood character and did not include enough parking. Councillor Sarah Carter said a better design could have come up with more suitable parking solutions. “We see this time and time and again – it’s greedy,” she said. “This is a street where parking is in great demand.” Benjamin Millar

The project The West Gate Tunnel Project will deliver a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge by providing a much needed second river crossing. It will widen the West Gate Freeway from 8 to 12 lanes, build a new road tunnel and bridge, and provide direct access to the port, CityLink and the north of the city.

Tunnel ‘great news’ for tourism By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona North will be opened up to tourism because of new trails and parkland provided under the West Gate Tunnel Project, say Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek. But Spotswood residents say they have missed out on the open space they requested, despite being negatively impacted by the project. The project will create about nine hectares of new open space and parkland, including completion of the Kororoit Creek Trail, a three-hectare park in Altona North (pictured), and a new shared trail under the West Gate Freeway that will link to the Federation Trail.

Short films stand tall “The judges have called it the strongest year ever – entries have been of an amazing standard,” she said. “It’s gone from being a small local event into something larger, attracting filmmakers from around Victoria, interstate and overseas.” Finalists this year include well-known artists and award-winning films from the western suburbs and beyond, as well as familiar faces such as comedians Greg Fleet and Dave O’Neil. The Rouge Program will showcase the work of female filmmakers and the Rising Sun program will feature works produced by secondary school students. Iconic jam doughnuts, playground marble battles, asylum seeker policy and a missing child will light up the screen when the west’s biggest short film festival returns this month. The fourth annual Setting Sun Short Film Festival will be held at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre from April 27 to 30. Judges have been kept busy sifting through a record 84 entries from destinations local and as far-flung as South America and London. This year’s festival will open with award-winning documentary Olympic Nick, starring now-retired Footscray doughnut maker Nick Tsiligiris. Festival founder and director Anna Bourozikas said entries included quirky comedy, film noir-style fantasy, claymation and documentaries.

out on any potential benefit from the project. “We’re happy that Altona North is getting open space – they should be getting open space,” she said. “This project brings huge air pollution problems with it so open space is mandatory as an offset. Our concern is that Spotswood is getting no open space. “We clearly requested that the industrial land on Simcock Avenue be converted to open space and ideally joined up with Stony Creek. This request has been ignored. “Spotswood gets nothing out of this project except a truck ramp next to our only open space [McLean Reserve].”

They’re planning to put the path in and also to put lots of plants in. “At the same time, they’re talking of upgrading the Federation Trail, which is in a bit of a mess at the moment. For the commuter, for people on bikes – great news.” But Better West spokeswoman Christine Harris said Spotswood residents had missed

Downpours mar beach rankings By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona and Williamstown beaches have been ranked numbers 17 and 18, respectively, in the Environment Protection Authority’s water quality report for the summer season. The only other western suburbs’ swimming beach, at Werribee South, was ranked 35th, making it the second dirtiest beach in Port Phillip Bay after Frankston. The EPA’s Dr Anthony Boxshall said there were about 200 more poor water quality
forecasts issued this summer compared to last, which was due to more rain. “While it was quite a dry summer, Victoria experienced prolonged downpours around the Christmas-New Year period that contributed to extended periods of poor water quality at all of the 36 beaches that EPA monitors,” he said. In January, Star Weekly reported all three western suburbs’ beaches had been deemed unsafe for swimming for days following a one-in-100 year storm on December 29.
Recreational shellfish collectors were subsequently advised not to eat shellfish taken from Hobsons Bay after two marine algal blooms were detected. Poor water quality alerts, with beaches rated too risky for swimmers, were also issued after heavy rains in late January, and early and late February. Five swim advisories – issued when there are inexplicably high bacterial levels in dry weather – were put out over summer, including one at Werribee South on February 15.
Health risks are predominantly gastro attacks and infections of open cuts or other wounds. In dry weather, faecal contamination could come from leaking sewer infrastructure, boat sewage discharge, animal faeces or even bathers themselves. Melbourne’s equal best beaches were the Dell, Eastern, Portarlington and St Leonards. Last year, Altona ranked 19th, equal with the Dell, while Williamstown came in at 14th and Werribee South at number 28.
Mollusc magic for bay The scene is set for Victoria’s only native oysters to start the work of cleaning the waters of Port Phillip Bay and attracting more fish after 360 tonnes of limestone rubble was laid on the seabed. Led by the Nature Conservancy, the Port Phillip Shellfish Reef restoration project is one of Victoria’s largest bay restoration programs. The limestone, laid off Hobsons Bay towards St Kilda, and off Corio Bay near Avalon, will be followed by the dropping of 300,000 oysters on the rubble. Once settled on the limestone, the native Angasi oysters will develop into shellfish reefs and help people and nature by cleaning the water and boosting fish numbers. Conservancy marine restoration scientist Boze Hancock said oysters were nature’s water filters. “Many are filtering at a rate of up to four to five litres an hour,” Dr Hancock said. “That’s enough to fill a bathtub a day.”
Project manager Simon Branigan said the effect of the $250,000 project would be noticeable in three years. The organisation has applied to the Victorian government to increase its two restoration sites by 20 hectares. Neelima Choahan/The Age

Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Nexus is a state-wide Police Road Policing Operation that forms part of the Easter campaign over the Easter holiday period. It aims to increase driver awareness and journey planning, while reducing road trauma during this high risk time. This 5 day Road Policing Enforcement Campaign will run from Thursday 13th April to Monday 17th April, 2017 Westgate Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Jason Templar said this operation will be conducted throughout all operational Police Regions and Police Service Areas during the five days, using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources. Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Driver Distraction, Fatigue and Seatbelts. Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt and make sure you are well rested. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired.
have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Easter Holiday weekend RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.
DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!
Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Nexus during the 2017 Easter Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000
Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State.
Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.
Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who
If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users.

Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

MY PLACE Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith – Australian Geographic’s adventurer of the year – has created a film documenting his six-month solo circumnavigation of the world in his amphibious aircraft Southern Sun. He speaks with Benjamin Millar … Do you have other adventures in the pipeline?
What is your connection with Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay?
I’d love to fly into remote parts of Papua New Guinea, Northern Australia and some Pacific Islands to show outdoor movies, to expand our Cinema Lorosa’e free outdoor cinema program further afield. This will be the research and foundation of Screens Without Borders (www. screenswithoutborders.org), which we are very excited about.
Anne and I bought a house in Williamstown when she was pregnant with Tim back in 1996, a year after we bought the rather dilapidated Sun Theatre in Yarraville. I was looking for an old theatre to be the headquarters of our cinema equipment business; Yarraville resident Brian Davis referred me to the Sun. I crawled in through a hole in the back wall and just fell in love with the place.
Who has been your biggest inspiration?
What do you love most about the area?
Do you have a favourite local place? So many … watching films in LaScala, lunch at Cornershop, breakfast on the deck of Royals looking across the bay, riding along the river, my morning row from the Anchorage across to Port Melbourne. What has been the most rewarding aspect of bringing the Sun Theatre back to life? Seeing how much people love the place, people
(Damjan Janevski)
I love the west. I do everything I can to avoid crossing the river to the east side. I love being able to ride my bike along the Yarra from home to work, the down-to-earth people, great sense of community. If I could change anything, it would be the wind direction. There always seems to be a northerly when I am riding towards Yarraville, and a southerly when riding home to Williamstown – if we could just reverse that, life would be perfect.
I list 19 people in the credits of the film who have been a great inspiration to me. Each in their own way has influenced my sense of fun, adventure, justice, commitment, success, respect in their own way – Willy Wonka, Grandma and Grandpa, Robin Lee Graham, Mike and Mal Leyland, Jonathan Livingstone Seagull, Winston Churchill, John F Kennedy, Greg Hunt, Daryl Kerrigan, Sir Francis Chichester, John Bertrand, Howard Hughes, Michael Corleone, Alby Mangels, Dick Smith, Barry Peak and Ferris Bueller … but if I had to choose just one, it would be Willy Wonka.
relaxing in the park out front, and hearing about people who got married after going on their first date at the Sun. What is the story behind your new documentary Voyage of the Southern Sun? It follows the story of my solo circumnavigation in my beloved little silver plane, the Southern
Sun. It was just the greatest experience, travelling to 80 cities and 25 countries, meeting people and seeing the most incredible sights all over the globe. There were plenty of highs and a few lows. It had never been done before, but I think people will appreciate the delight I felt along the way, and I hope to inspire them to turn dreams into their own reality.
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? I grew up on an orchard in Seville and when I was 12 I built a “sail boat” using a tractor tube, a sheet of plywood, two broom sticks, and cut up a tent to make the sail, and sailed it on the dam. Voyage of the Southern Sun makes its world premiere at the Sun Theatre at 7pm tonight (Wednesday).

Secret agent exposes the upside of life Emerging Footscray filmmaker Amy Marks has created a 60-second insight into life with a disability. The 20-year-old was one of five winners nationwide selected to create a short piece to screen on SBS television as part of National Youth Week. Ms Marks said she was chosen for a place in a week-long filmmaking and storytelling workshop after submitting a 30-second video pitch about what it meant to grow up with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. “I spoke about people’s assumptions and how when people first see you, the first thing they see is the crutches.” The second-year Bachelor of Screen Media student at Victoria University wants people to stop jumping to the conclusion that life with a disability is either extremely tragic or inherently inspirational. “Why do we attach a negative emotion to disability? There is just this kind of narrative of ‘poor you, you have to use crutches’.” Ms Mark’s short film draws on the creativity and humour that helped her navigate her childhood and discuss her condition with other children. “The secret agent story is completely true. I genuinely did say I was a secret agent and had been bitten by a shark, all sorts of tall tales in the playground,” she said. “It was just such an accessible way to discuss it – I think a double identity is a way of taking ownership.” Ms Marks now hopes her short film connects with young viewers and opens discussions around disability. “The reason I got into film in the first place was to bring a voice to young people with

GROW YOUR OWN There is nothing quite so rewarding as growing your own fruit and veg. A good friend of mine is having a ball growing a variety of vegetables, and you might say I was green with envy when she showed me photos of her latest harvest – this stunning batch of multi-coloured peppers! She chargrilled them and they came up a treat.
NIKKI MARKOVICS, FOX FM BREAKFAST NEWSREADER
Part of the joy of growing your own is sharing your harvest with like-minded souls. A perfect place to do so is the Wyndham Community Garden Swap, held on the first Sunday each month at Mossfiel Reserve in Hoppers Crossing.
FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? NM: Need improvement. I have grown up in a family of avid food lovers. My folks generally were/are the prime cooks in our house. Saying that though, I can cook if given a simple recipe, but baking is my strong point.
Do you grown your own vegies? Send me some pics of your latest harvest. I’d love to know what culinary delights you’ve made out of your home-grown produce.
FB: What is your signature dish? NM: Sadly, it’s nothing flash – it always involves eggs. I am brunch queen so I rate my poached eggs and smashed avo or a good omelette with three French cheeses and mushrooms. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? NM: If I count my brunch obsession as a meal, it would have to be a good crunchy seeded GF-free toast with Vegemite, smashed avocado and feta, poached eggs, spinach, grilled tomatoes and mushies and hollandaise. The final supper would be crispy-skin salmon with mashed sweet potato, grilled cherry tomatoes, asparagus with balsamic glaze and goats cheese and lots of sauce – be it aioli or mushroom sauce. Disclosure: I LOVE SAUCE! Pudding: Freshly baked-scones with lashings of brandy cream and raspberry jam.
As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au
FB: What is your favourite food TV show and who is your favourite TV food person? NM: The Little Paris Kitchen, which stars Rachel Khoo. She is gorgeous – she makes food fun and pretty and she has the sweetest accent. Plus she features one of my favourite places – Paris! FB: What is your favourite food? NM: Eggs! And I am a sweet tooth, so pass the jar of lemon curd please. FB: What is your favourite drink? NM: Wine. I could easily consume a glass (or three) of a lovely DeBortoli or Chandon sparkling red. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? The charming chocolate-box appeal of this Newport property cannot be understated. Located bayside of Hall Street and updated throughout, it has a fantastic floorplan that includes two living areas and three generous bedrooms, one with glass sliding-door access to the backyard. A mature pine adds to the country-chic vibe. The kitchen is charming with clean white cabinetry and timber benchtops. This property has all of the hallmarks of the quintessential picture-perfect abode. Sitting opposite parkland which can be viewed from the large front living room with gas heating, this property pulls on the heart strings to make it your own. Additional features include floorboards and off-street parking via a right-of-way lane.
Locals and millennials call West Footscray “WeFo” and you know when an area gets its own acronym, it’s on the rise. This great property, set in the heart of WeFo, has four good-sized bedrooms, main with a built-in wardrobe, a good-sized kitchen/meals area with loads of storage and a separate lounge or formal dining area with a gas heater. There is a separate family-sized laundry and a powder room for guests. Side access leads to undercover parking for four cars, and the large block has direct access to Basset Reserve. With refrigerated cooling it’s a property that will prove hard to beat. Enjoy all the urban-chic cafes and close proximity to the CBD.

Open the shutter-style windows to let in the breeze and the cottage-style appeal of this house – set against the twin-pitched roofline – is instant. The main bedroom is at the front of the house. A recent renovation has created a contemporary en suite with a frameless shower, hardwood vanity and porcelain basin and toilet. Sliding doors open up to a fantastic walk-in wardrobe with a built-in dresser, flanked by twin wardrobe spaces. The second bedroom, opposite, also has the atmospheric shutter-style windows and gets plenty of light.

Walk through to the open-plan living hub to find the dining zone fits an eight-seater table. Two floor-to-ceiling awning-style hardwood windows open out to a fully-finished sideway. The gorgeous kitchen zone features an enormous island bench with cleverly designed storage spaces and sink set within. The main living room invites you to relax, the cottage-style atmosphere not lost despite the sense of space. A large gas fireplace inset within a floating wall feels cosy. Brand new made-to-measure linen-blend block-out
curtains with matching pelmets frame the room perfectly. Twin french doors open to the sizeable backyard where you’ll find herringbone-laid brick paving under a back patio that overlooks a lovely garden with original weatherboard shed wired for power. The apple and nectarine trees create shade in this picturesque space. Back inside, there is a fully-plumbed Euro laundry behind concertina doors opposite a powder room. The main bathroom is fully-tiled and bathed in light thanks to a big window overlooking the second, fully-finished

sideway. A frameless shower is adjacent a contemporary floating vanity with a freestanding plunge bath. Two further, carpeted bedrooms complete this really lovely property. One of these bedrooms has built-in wardrobes and direct access to the yard, where there is plenty of room for a food garden and even a chicken coop. There is off-street parking for one car. This property beautifully represents that comfort-driven feeling the Scandinavian’s call “hygge” – an atmosphere of comfort and togetherness; a sense of home. FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes behind the wheel to discover Uber eats … After spending hours with my friend, the Uber Food Dude, cruising the inner west making deliveries and talking with a cross-section of restaurant folk, one thing is clear … they may not like giving Uber a hefty slice of the price of each meal dispatched but they were all, to one degree or another, enthusiastic about being involved. The reasons? Simple. No need to hire drivers … and keeping faith with regulars. A weekly deposit in their business bank account – my understanding is that, under current arrangements, Uber takes 35 per cent of each meal’s cover price – is guaranteed. And – importantly, going by the feedback I get – promotional value and the exposure via the Uber Eats app. Uber takes the photos that go with every eater entry on the app – and they are very good. Gorgeous, actually! My Uber Eats driver pal had previously regaled me with stories and explanations of how it all works, including the very slick technology that makes it possible. Disappointingly, for the tabloidish story-seeking journo that resides within in me, there has been little by way of outrageous yarns arising from his regular delivery routine. Just eateries preparing food for regular folks. I think everyone understands that such an operation runs on very tight margins – just like the restaurant game itself. But still, something doesn’t quite make sense for me in all this … how is it viable when Uber
takes a hefty slice and the drivers get something like $8 to $12 for each delivery? At Luxsmith in Seddon, we’re told it’s their first night doing Uber – and early in the evening, they’ve already seen more than a dozen orders go out the door. That seems pretty good going to me. The recipient of our Luxsmith delivery, for whom this is also an Uber debut, is happy to see us. There are idiosyncrasies in the ordering habits of inner-west Uber Eats users. One of our deliveries, for instance, finds us taking a burger meal from Mr Burger at Yarraville Gardens to Edgewater – and only a couple of blocks from St Burgs and its fine burgers. Later in the night, my pal makes the journey from Happy Four in Yarraville to a part of Footscray where there are a couple of perfectly fine and very similar Chinese establishments. Go figure! For my friend, doing Uber Eats makes all kinds of sense. The money may not be of the get-rich-quick variety, but a handful of deliveries a night for a couple of nights a week adds up to some handy income. Unlike the Uber passenger service, there are no members of the public with whom to deal – just happy, and hungry, customers. Deliveries are – thanks to the Uber driver app “ping” alerts to nearby drivers – almost always very local, rarely more than a few kilometres.
Employment
He reports that some of the most frequently used inner-west restaurants for Uber deliveries are several that may appear to not be particularly popular – but they come alive when the hungry sofa corps get on their mobiles, especially later at night! In my eats journeys in recent months, I’ve become increasingly familiar with the sight of Uber deliveries lined up, and waiting to be
MR BURGER
picked up, at many of the places we have been chowing down. It’s a whole ‘nuther world. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Leagues join forces for women’s football 12 teams, eight from the EDFL and four from the WRFL, a mixture of new and established sides, while a couple of clubs will field their lower grade sides. VFL side VU Spurs will field their fourth side in the competition, while Pascoe Vale’s reserves will also run out in the joint competition EDFL’s Sunbury Lions, which played in Victorian Women’s Football League’s division 2 last season, along with former VWFL north west teams Roxburgh Park and Jacana, will also field sides again.
Keilor and Craigieburn have new sides, along with Glenroy, which has Collingwood forward Moana Hope on the coaching panel. From the WRFL, there are two existing and two new teams. North west reigning premiers Manor Lakes, along with Glenorden, also from north west division, will again field sides. Caroline Springs and Tarneit will field teams for the first time. The two leagues will also have separate youth girls, under-15 and under-12 sides. Tara Murray
Storm sinks Vikings By Lance Jenkinson Altona was dealt the harshest possible hand in the Western Region Football League division 1 on Saturday. The Vikings went down to Hoppers Crossing by seven points in a game that was abandoned shortly after half-time due to lightning around JK Grant Reserve. Barring intervention from league headquarters this week, the four points will be awarded to Hoppers Crossing because play had resumed in the second half. Had the game been called off before half-time, the sides would have split the points. Vikings coach Saade Ghazi was not happy with the turn of events brought upon by mother nature. “If that’s the rule, that’s the rule, but if that’s the case, it would be quite disappointing,” he said. “I don’t think any team deserved to win and no team deserved to lose. “It was a pretty even game, it was level at half-time. We had the wind in the third quarter and the storm came and the wind blew the other way, which is probably why they got in front [in the third quarter].” While Ghazi was stewing over a tough day at the office, he believed the right decision was made to call off the game. The storm lasted about 40 minutes and the cut-off point for umpires to end the game is 30 minutes. While the ground was bathed in sunshine not long after, it would not have been in the players best interests to have to warm up again and finish the match. “It’s a bit of a hollow feeling that you don’t get to finish the game off, but the players and umpires welfare is more crucial,” Ghazi said. “The right call was made, but it probably should’ve been done in the second quarter. “If we’ve come off for lightning, there was definitely a lot of lightning before half-time.” Altona has faced both of last year’s grand finalists and been in control at certain stages in both games. The Vikings were left to rue two five minute patches either side of half-time against Hoppers Crossing, which saw the four points slip out of their hands in unforeseen circumstances. While the Vikings have no points to show for six and a bit quarters of impressive football, they have shown they can match it with the very best in the competition again this season and should be considered a serious threat to four-peat champions Deer Park. “We’ve still got a long way to go, but I was happy with our desire and effort,” Ghazi said. “If our effort is high and we’re competitive around the football, that will get us to be in games and we were in that game [against Hoppers Crossing]. “It would’ve gone down to the wire, I would think.” Meanwhile, Spotswood sent a warning to the rest of the competition with a 34-point win over defending premiers Deer Park at McLean Reserve.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■I
thought I had seen everything in local sport – especially footy – until what happened last Saturday. Four of the nine WRFL senior games were abandoned due to lightning. The one we broadcast for WYN FM was completed after a 20 minute stoppage to see if the lightning subsided. These days we all understand occupational health and safety issues and the umpires were right to suspend play and put safety first. We have become accustomed to this in sports like golf and horse racing but you don’t see much of it in football. I am sure the result of a couple of these games will be hotly discussed with the rule stating that once you get to half-time it is deemed to be a game. In the swings and roundabouts of sport, I hope teams that lost out this time cop it sweet. You can bet it will happen again.
■ The
Mitchell name is revered at Hogans Road with generations representing Hoppers Crossing in cricket and searing their names into the club record books both on and off the field. Max made his mark as a foundation player at the club and was instrumental as a committee man in steering the club to its position of power in cricket today. Max turned 70 recently and is celebrating in style with the clan. Another of the former Hoppers hierarchy – Les Dickson – is enjoying retirement from the police force with his wife Ros, a tireless worker for both the cricket and football clubs. Both are rabid Bulldogs supporters and when I bumped into them last week in the supermarket, they proudly showed me their premiership tatts. From what I have seen, the Bulldogs premiership victory must have taken many tattoo parlours in Victoria back into the black ink because everyone seems to have the red, white and blue as a permanent celebration.
■ Luke
Beveridge showed his class after the Bulldogs’ loss in Perth to the Dockers. In the post match press conference a journalist asked if he would consider bringing Will Minson into the team. Beveridge, with a grin, reminded the journalist that Minson had retired at the end of last season. Many other coaches – especially those a bit grumpy after a loss – would have hooked into the journo at 100 miles an hour. Beveridge did not. It was an ill-informed question but it would be hard to find one sporting journalist who has not made a similar error at some stage. Kevin Hillier

Wayne Patak, who returned to the Woodsmen in the off season, was the standout in the midfield, while James Beilby bobbed up with three goals and Conor Daley and Murray Boyd kicked two apiece. Elsewhere in division 1, Sunshine Kangaroos had an 83-point win over Albion, Wyndhamvale was too strong for Caroline Springs in a 20-point victory, while Werribee Districts held off St Albans by four points.
In division 3, Parkside cruised to a 142-point win over Laverton at Henry Turner Reserve, with boom recruit Jason Cloke kicking nine goals. Braybrook went down by 15 points to Wyndham Suns and Tarneit edged out Sunshine Heights by nine points in games that were both cut short by the severe storms, while North Sunshine thrashed Sanctuary Lakes by 45 points in a game that went the distance.

Essendon District and Western Region football leagues will again join forces in women’s football. The two leagues ran a successful joint girls’ competition for a number of years, which then expanded from one age group to three – now the two leagues will have a joint women’s competition this year. With AFL Victoria handing control of women’s football to local leagues, the two leagues decided to combine to ensure there are enough teams for the new competition. Williamstown ready to own Easter blockbuster Williamstown will get a chance to avenge last year’s Victorian Football League preliminary final loss to the Casey Scorpions when it meets the re-named Casey Demons in the blockbuster season opener at Burbank Oval. The Seagulls have opted to play the showdown with last year’s minor premiers on Easter Monday to take advantage of a day that has traditionally been a football-free zone for suburban and state league competitions. “It’s a really good initiative by the footy club,” Seagulls coach Andrew Collins said. “Easter Monday has been dominated by Hawthorn and Geelong, but not everyone is a Hawthorn or Geelong supporter. “It’s a good opportunity for us as a footy club to maybe control that little [Easter Monday] market in the west.” Williamstown can set up its season in the opening month with three of its first four games in the friendly confines of Burbank Oval. There are no ‘gimme’ games in that block for
the Seagulls, so they will need to be at their best from the get-go to defend their home turf. While Collins knows a positive start is crucial for any side, he warned his players not to look any further ahead than the Casey game. “I think that I read this stat that out of the AFL last year, there was only one shift of places in the top eight after round two,” he said. “It’s critical that we get off to a really high-end start and … making a statement to the competition that we’re going to be a pretty good team. “But, really, everything is focused on that round one encounter.” There were plenty of exciting player acquisitions for Williamstown over the summer, which makes tomorrow night’s team selection one of the most eagerly anticipated in a long time. Making it harder on the selectors, the Seagulls have nearly a full list of players to choose from.
Possessions were hard to come by in last year’s preliminary final between Williamstown and the Casey Scorpions. (Luke Hemer)
Former Frankston trio Ben Cavarra, Josh Newman and Kyle Gray could make their Seagulls debuts. It will be back to the future for Adam Marcon, who returns to the Seagulls nest after a season with Richmond in the AFL.
Magic’s potent goal spell

A potent Yarraville Glory has no trouble scoring goals in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1, but their defensive woes continue to hold them back. Despite scoring seven goals in three games, the one-win Glory are way down in ninth, having conceded three goals a game on average. The Glory’s latest defeat came in a 3-2 thriller away to Banyule City at Yallambie Park Reserve on Saturday. Meanwhile, Altona City has charged up the state league 2 ladder after back-to-back wins. City had a 2-0 win over Corio away at Hume Reserve on Saturday.
By Lance Jenkinson A second half blitz fuelled Altona Magic’s come-from-behind 5-2 win over co-tenants Altona East Phoenix in their Football Federation Victoria state league 1 clash at Paisley Park on Saturday night. After trailing by a goal at half-time, the ladder-leading Magic came home with a wet sail, piling on five goals in the second half to make it three wins on the trot to start the season. Magic coach Goran Lozanovski said his side produced a similar brand of football in both halves, but took better advantage of their opportunities after half-time. “We had five or six really good chances in the first half and missed the target,” he said. “The second half was a different story.” Once again, Altona Magic had to withstand a physical battering from an opposing club. The Magic are the defending champions, title favourites and have assembled one of the most potent line-ups in the division, which means they are the biggest scalp in the competition and have a target on their back. Lozanovski knows most teams will be physical against his side to make up for a talent gulf, but he thinks there are times when opposition sides have been going over the top with their aggression. “We know we’re going to be the hunted,” Lozanovski said. “Every game play it’s going to be like a grand final [for the opposition team]. “Altona East probably felt like they had to be physical and try and put us off our game to a certain degree, which they did. “It was a bit disappointing some of the physicality and the way they went about things. “A couple of boys had to come off [with injuries], which is a bit frustrating because it’s happened to us three games in a row now. “We’ve had some forced changes because of some nasty tackles and nasty scenarios.” Altona Magic took no added pleasure out of winning the local derby. The Magic means business this season as it seeks promotion to the NPL. “Every win is a sweet win,” Lozanovski said. “Like I said to the lads pre-game and pre-season all the way through, as far as I’m concerned it’s all about the three points.” Jon McShane opened his goal-scoring account for the season with two goals for the Magic. McShane has been outstanding up front in the opening three games without hitting the scoreboard. “He’s doing a lot of hard yards off the ball and creating opportunities for other people to get on the score sheet,” Lozanovski said. “He snagged a couple of goals and that was his just reward because he worked really hard when we were chasing the game.” Adamson Ajayi added to his goal-scoring
A surprise selection could be Nick Ebinger, a former Williamstown CYMS player who has trained the house down. Collins reckons the contest will be won and lost in the midfield. He is looking to the ruck contest between Williamstown’s Nick Meese and Casey’s Melbourne-listed Jake Spencer. Ben Jolley will lead Williamstown out as captain for a sixth straight year. The Seagulls have no shortage of leaders with a nine-man leadership group announced in the pre-season, including Marcon, Ed Carr and Willie Wheeler named vice captains. Meanwhile, Footscray will host Box Hill Hawks on Good Friday in its first competitive game since last year’s grand final win. It will be a big day for Bulldogs fans, who will get to see the unfurling of their 2016 VFL flag, before heading to Etihad Stadium when the Western Bulldogs clash with North Melbourne.

Altona has consigned a slow start in the Big V men’s division 2 to the memory bank with a 69-67 win over Collingwood All Stars at Collingwood College on Friday night. Patrick Green had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Gators, while James Webster chipped in 13 points and five rebounds and Aron Pantano contributed 12 points. In women’s division 2, Altona went down 105-47 to the Craigieburn Eagles away at the Craigieburn Leisure Centre. Alysha Carden-David continues to produce big numbers, adding a double-double 28 points and 12 rebounds on Sunday.
Lacrosse
Footscray is off and running in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Bulldogs were victorious 12-10 on the road over Malvern in the tightest game of the opening round. Williamstown owned the biggest winning margin of the weekend, thrashing MCC 17-3 at Greenwich Reserve. The game was called off during the third period due to storms, but not before Alex Pike had put on a show with four goals and three assists. The first round of the women’s state league will be on April 23 with Footscray and Newport to open proceedings with a grand final re-match.

outstanding in the midfield, while Lirim Elmazi has been a revelation at right back. Altona Magic will switch to cup mode tonight when they hit the road to face Green Gully Cavaliers in a blockbuster FFA Cup fifth round encounter at Green Gully Reserve.
Footscray enjoyed its first win of the Victorian Rugby Union Dewar Shield season on Saturday. The Bulldogs downed Moorabbin 27-10 in their first away trip this campaign at Keys Road Reserve. Jets crash on the eastern front By Lance Jenkinson
Western Jets’ coach Torin Baker. (Michael Dodge/AFL Media/Getty Images)
The Western Jets have crashed back to earth in the TAC Cup. A week after a stirring win over rivals Calder Cannons, the Jets got a harsh reality check from reigning premiers Sandringham Dragons, the yardstick of the competition. The Dragons were in total command after quarter-time, running out 64-point winners at Burbank Oval on Saturday. “We just got beaten by a really good outfit,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “We were out-classed … Sandy has been one of the best performed – obviously last year’s premiers. “I think they’ll be right up there again this year. They’ve had three good wins to date, so their form stands up.” Western Jets, missing three of their AIS-AFL Academy players, started the match well, still in the hunt despite trailing by nine points at quarter-time. From that point on though, it was all
Sandringham, kicking four goals to nil in the second quarter to break the game open. “We were really happy with our first quarter,” Baker said. “We controlled the footy inside our forward half, but they went coast-to-coast a couple of times and slotted a couple from really difficult positions. “Then our players just dropped off a little bit … and that allowed their ball movement and class to shine through. “We needed to maintain the rage we had in the first quarter and persist with that, and we weren’t able to do it, which is disappointing.” Sandringham cruised to a percentage boosting win. The Dragons kicked seven goals to two in the second half to blow the Jets away. Out of the wreckage, Nick Stuhldreier’s second half was a positive, with the co-captain responding to Baker’s call at half-time for a lift. “We were pretty confrontational with the boys at half-time, and he was one who really cracked in during the third quarter and tried to do everything possible to help stem the tide,”
Baker said. “Overall, his output was very good … we had him down for about 24 disposals.” First-year player Hamish Murphy has taken to the TAC Cup like a duck to water. Murphy, who played forward most of his junior career, is thriving in a defensive role with the Jets. “We’ve sort of converted him from a forward in the under-16s at the Jets and Vic Metro, and we’ve put him down back, and he really looks at home,” Baker said. Jack Noonan was the Jets’ only multiple goalkicker, with two, showing coaches he is on the hunt for more game time. “Jack came in for his first game of the year and he had a real red-hot go at it, and showed he values his position within the team,” Baker said. “He’s been keen to break into the group and he displayed that with the way he cracked in at the contest.” Western Jets, sitting ninth with one win from three games, will have a break over the Easter weekend before their next game against Gippsland Power at Burbank Oval on April 22.
Young gun impresses at the MCG Western Jets young gun Cameron Rayner might have forced some alterations to long range AFL mock draft boards at the weekend. After his two dynamic performances for the Jets to open the TAC Cup season, Rayner took his game up another level and excelled in the AFL Academy’s 20th anniversary game at the MCG on Sunday. Playing for the Team Daniher side, which beat Team Weitering by 46 points in a one-sided contest, Rayner was awarded the medal for best-on-ground. Rayner kicked three goals and had 23 disposals in a brilliant display. Making the performance all the more impressive, the 18-year-old went into the match under an injury cloud. Jets coach and AFL Academy assistant Torin Baker said Rayner went into the game after splitting open a toe, so probably wasn’t at 100 per cent. “To produce that sort of performance was excellent,” Baker said. “He went forward and converted really well and was also a good clearance player.” Rayner was one of three Western Jets players involved in the game, with highly-rated Lachlan Fogarty and developing player Buku Khamis also featuring. Khamis, one of 15 bottom-age players invited to play in the game, took one of the most unique pathways to get there. A refugee from South Sudan, Khamis moved to Australia with his mum and brothers aged six and was a latecomer to the sport. Each time Khamis sets foot on a football field for the Jets, he does something special. “Every game, he just keeps showing what he can do for a couple of moments,” Baker said. “He’s not having a huge output in the whole of games yet, but he continues to learn new tricks as a high forward.” Khamis kicked a goal for Team Weitering. Baker reckons exposure to elite players in the AFL Academy and listening to and learning from top coaches at the academy and Maribyrnong Sports Academy will stand him in good stead. “To play against good players and even do the training, he’ll benefit from it enormously,” Baker said. “He’s become a really professional athlete with the way he goes about things. “He’s in the sports academy at Maribyrnong and he’s also in the AFL Academy, so he’s getting really good exposure to good habits.” Lance Jenkinson

Rusty Dogs need to lift Footscray will need a jump-start after stalling out of the blocks in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league. The Bulldogs, still rusty after a round one bye, went down 3-1 to a Camberwell side already at the top of its game at the Footscray Hockey Centre on Saturday. It was a closely-fought first half with the sides locked at 1-1 at half-time, but Camberwell ran the game out better with two second half goals sealing victory for the away side. Nic Lewis was Footscray’s lone goal-scorer. The Bulldogs will meet Yarra Valley tonight at the Maribyrnong Secondary College at 8.30pm in the final game before the Easter break. Altona, first round winners, met their match in a 3-1 loss to Doncaster at the Doncaster Regional Hockey Centre on Sunday. The Seagulls conceded two first half goals to trail 2-0 at half-time. Altona and Melbourne University – two sides with a 1-1 record – will square off tonight at the State Netball and Hockey Centre at 8.45pm. In women’s premier league, while some clubs have completed two games, a frustrated Footscray was still yet to take to the field after the weekend. The Bulldogs had the bye in round one and their most recent game against Camberwell was washed out by the ferocious storms that hit Melbourne on Saturday afternoon. The two sides shared a point each. Altona is yet to taste victory after two games. The Seagulls could not improve on their first round draw, going down 4-0 to Doncaster at the Doncaster Regional Hockey Centre on Saturday. Altona will face Melbourne University at the State Netball and Hockey Centre tonight at 8.30pm. Lance Jenkinson
