Parking fine blitz denied ‘‘

If all drivers parked legally there would be no requirement to issue any parking fines

’’

- Chris Eddy “Fluctuations in the number of parking fines the council issues can occur for a number of reasons – anything from the weather [to] public holidays and events drawing larger crowds to our city,” he said. “Council also receives a considerable number of requests from our residents to enforce parking restrictions in local streets, which can also affect the number of fines we may issue. “If all drivers parked legally there would be no requirement to issue any parking fines.” Australian Services Union organiser Martin McDonald said the union had become involved after being told staff were being called in to meetings and told to book more people.

Easter calls forth the passion Williamstown’s Olivia O’Brien will star in a pre-Easter performance inspired by the Passion of Christ at Melbourne’s St Paul’s Cathedral. Passion, Lament, Glory Glory, on March 31 and April 1, features Baroque music, contemporary dance, a 100-voice choir and an aerial artist suspended from the cathedral’s ceiling. Ms O’Brien is among a group of 15 performing Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater Mater, exploring Mary’s love and pain for her son. Other famous works in the show include Handel’s Messiah and Salve Regina. Artistic director Jane Davidson said although the music being performed was created nearly 300 years ago, it still resonated deeply. Bookings essential: http://bit.ly/2obpLim Goya Dmytryshchak

Hobsons Bay council has rejected claims that parking officers have been told to increase the number of fines issued in order to meet a set target. A source told Star Weekly that officers were afraid their jobs would be contracted out after being told they were about $200,000 below target. The source has warned residents should be prepared for a blitz after officers had been told to lift revenue for the last quarter of the financial year. “We’ve been told we’re just to book anything and everything. A lot of people that the officers would have warned or asked to move on … will now be booked,” the source said. The council has said it has no target and provided figures that show parking fine revenue is at its highest level in four years. In the council chief executive’s report on operations, a graph shows the number of parking fines issued up to mid-February were at the lowest point in six years. The council said that although the number of fines issued was lower, the monetary amounts were higher. Figures for July, 2016, to February, 2017, show the council received $1,141,681 in parking fine revenue. For the same period last year, the council reaped $1,084,606. The year before that, revenue was $868,433 for the same time. For the two weeks, from February 27 to March 12, 414 fines were issued each week, totalling 828. For the same period last year, 754 tickets were issued. The source claims every parking

officer has been spoken to and told to “double their tickets to make up the shortfall before the financial year [ends]”. “There are vehicles that park on nature strips that we normally wouldn’t book but we have been instructed to book … that discretion’s been taken away now. “So it’s just book, book, book.” Chief executive Chris Eddy said the council did not impose parking infringement targets on its inspectors and never had.

Truckie and son thwart ram-raid By Benjamin Millar A truck driver who confronted a man who had used a sledgehammer to smash through the doors of a West Footscray 7-Eleven, said he was acting on instinct. The truck driver, Peter, was on night shift with his son about 1.30am on March 16 when they saw a man smashing through the glass doors of the store which had been rammed with a white ute. A terrified employee ran off as the offender smashed through the door, before making his

way behind the counter. Peter confronted the offender as he was attempting to smash open the cash register with a crowbar. “I was driving past, I noticed the guy had a big sledgehammer in his hand, and I thought ‘that’s not right, he’s not buying nothing there’,” Peter told 3AW. “It was just the natural instinct, I guess, to help someone. “I stop there three times a day – I was just worried he was going to hurt one of the guys behind the counter.” Peter said he warned the man to drop his crowbar, which he did. Peter then picked it up

and began striking the man on the arm. “Every time I hit him, he was just like laughing at me. I thought ‘you’ve gotta be joking me’ – he was like a half-robot or something. There was no stopping that kid.” CCTV footage shows two police arriving on the scene and attempting to capture a man inside the store. He forced his way past them and fled in a vehicle before crashing into a power pole nearby, where he was detained. Peter’s son drove the police car after the officers set off on foot in pursuit of the man. “I told my son to take the car down in case

he drives off, but they managed to get to him.” Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp told 3AW there would be “opportunities to learn” from the incident. A 19-year-old man has been charged with offences including aggravated burglary, assaulting police, resisting arrest and armed robbery. He was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on June 9. Peter said he had received a positive response from staff for intervening in the situation. “The owners were really thankful … they were trying to give me free stuff.”

Open gas bottle blamed for blast

Rhett, the cat, spray painted pink. (Supplied)

Rhett gets nasty case of spray paint A cat has been covered in pink spray paint in a bewildering animal cruelty case in Williamstown. Owner Phil Burgoine said he was puzzled by the attack Thursday last week on his four-year-old cat Rhett, who takes his name from Gone with the Wind and even has a sister called Scarlett. “I was up probably a few minutes before 7am and he walked in seemingly unconcerned, I presume looking for breakfast,” Mr Burgoine said. “He was covered with paint – all across his back, down his tail, all over his face, chest and down on the front legs.

“By my reckoning, it would have taken at least 15 or 20 seconds to do it because of the coverage on him. I just don’t know how someone could hold him down – there would have been some screaming and stuff going on.” Mr Burgoine took Rhett to Greencross Vets in Williamstown, concerned the paint could be lead-based and cause poisoning. Mr Burgoine said the vets were unsure how to treat Rhett but a quick Google search suggested using vegetable oil to dissolve the paint. “Which by and large worked. He’s a very placid cat, doesn’t go off the block much, so I’m just a wee bit puzzled by the whole thing.” The RSPCA’s Sophie Buchanan said spray

paint had the potential to be toxic, especially if ingested while a cat was grooming. “Causing a cat to became ill by spraying it with paint could be an offence under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,” she said. “Offences under this act can attract penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment or fines of up to $38,243. “We would urge anyone who believes that a cruelty offence towards an animal may have been committed to contact us on 9224 2222.” Rhett is back home resting with Scarlett. A large explosion at Footscray, which killed a young man in a hired truck, knocked over a brick wall and blew out windows in a 40-metre radius, was probably caused by a leaking LPG bottle, investigators believe. Anthony Carnevale, 24, died when the truck he was driving exploded at the intersection of Gordon and Barkly streets at 11.53am on December 29, 2015. The blast was so powerful it destroyed the truck, damaged a nearby ute and knocked over a small brick wall, a Coroners Court inquest was told. Leading Senior Constable Duncan McKenzie, the counsel assisting the coroner, told last week’s inquest that investigators believe gas leaked from a partly-open bottle and ignited when a battery sparked off a metal surface. Mr Carnevale had hired the truck to move household goods – including the gas bottles, a barbecue and three 12-volt batteries – from one storage facility to another. Fire investigator Damian O’Toole said he found three gas bottles all partly open, and that when the valves were closed, they were not tight. “It would have come out,” Mr O’Toole said. “Like a tap, if it’s slightly open, it’s dripping.” Mr O’Toole said people could be better educated about transporting gas bottles, as the ones in the truck were not restrained. The batteries were also missing their safety caps, he said. Leading Senior Constable McKenzie said investigators believe the gas bottles should have been transported outside the enclosed back of the truck, preventing a gas build-up in a confined area. – Adam Cooper, The Age

A candlelight vigil has been held to reclaim Footscray Park from gangs of violent thugs, who have been preying on men after dark. Star Weekly last week reported that police are stepping up patrols of Footscray Park in response to a spate of homophobic attacks, in which victims report being abused or lured, then set upon by groups of men. West Footscray resident James Wray, who organised the Reclaim the Park candlelight vigil, said violence is not welcome in Footscray, or anywhere. “Regardless of what people are doing, no one deserves to be the victim of violence, to be lured by people whose aim is to bash a stranger, out of whatever hate or prejudice they harbour.” Warnings about the attacks have been shared on gay hook-up websites, such as Squirt, and a number of incidents have been reported to the Victorian AIDS Council. About 30 people took part in Thursday night’s vigil, walking with candles from the main gate down into the park. Mr Wray spoke of being a victim of a homophobic assault, and the need to stand together to keep bigotry at bay. Footscray police Inspector Adrian Healy addressed the vigil, urging anyone with any information about attacks to come forward. Mr Wray said the current political climate and “state-sanctioned bigotry” are leading to an increase in verbal and physical attacks on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,

Robber chooses church over ‘ice’ By Goya Dmytryshchak An “ice-addicted robber” has been praised for turning his life around by becoming part of a church ministry and signing up for residential drug rehabilitation. Tristan Dengler pleaded guilty in the County Court to one charge of robbery at the Westside Hotel in Laverton, and admitted prior convictions. Judge Elizabeth Gaynor told the court that Dengler, 30, had a long criminal history beginning in 2005, and had faced court

before for charges including car theft, drug possession, burglary, destroying property, breaching an intervention order, making a threat to kill, being a prohibited person possessing an unregistered firearm, driving offences and unlawful assault. “You have been addicted to methylamphetamine for many, many years, and it would appear that this drug addiction has underpinned most of your offending,” she said. Judge Gaynor said Dengler had

received positive references from ConnectTransformations at Bendigo, a residential drug treatment program he undertook in February last year. He is also undertaking a diploma of Christian theology. “It appears you have moved about as far as possible from where you were – that is, from an ice-addicted robber, if you like, to somebody who appears to be starting to be part of the church ministry,” Judge Gaynor said. “You’ve got yourself out of what would undoubtedly have been … the longest gaol

sentence you would have faced in your career. “So, you’ve been screeching along at a million miles an hour in a car, ready to crash into a wall, and you’ve managed to do a U-turn at the last moment, so I congratulate you.” Dengler was sentenced to 158 days imprisonment, which he has already served on remand, and a 12-month community corrections order and 150 hours’ unpaid community work. Judge Gaynor warned Dengler: “If you knock off a box of matches from Woolworths … you could be jailed for that.”

Ticket to the Gypsy life When Footscray’s Donna Lee was looking to give her daughter Georgia Rose an experience to remember, little did she know their road-trip would turn into a three-year odyssey around Australia. Behind the wheel of a converted 1988 Toyota Hilux van dubbed Gypsy, the pair set off on the adventure of a lifetime. “I was a single parent, and I thought I didn’t know what I could do for her,” Ms Lee said. “But then the van came up for sale so I thought, ‘Let’s just do this’. “We left when she was seven. I probably thought it would be for one year, but once you start there is so much to see and do.” As a teacher, Ms Lee was able to keep her daughter’s schooling going via distance education. They now share a lifetime of memories, ranging from shucking fresh Coffin Bay oysters straight from the sea to helping launch a weather balloon on the Nullarbor Plain.

“Everyone else was buying a home and settling in, but we were out there meeting all these people on the roads and having these wonderful adventures,” Ms Lee said. With Georgia Rose growing up, they have been finding less time to hit the road with Gypsy. After going through so much in their 15 years together Ms Lee couldn’t face the prospect of selling Gypsy, so has opted to donate her to charity Kids Under Cover. Kids Under Cover will auction Gypsy, raising funds to help prevent youth homelessness. Kids Under Cover chief executive Jo Swift said donations of vehicles were essential for assisting the charity in its work. “All sale proceeds from your donation help at-risk young people stay connected to home and education,” she said. By Goya Dmytryshchak Former Williamstown mayor and Rotarian Douglas Lindsay has been remembered as a gregarious community-minded man who drew people to him. A service for Mr Lindsay, who died on March 18 aged 83, was held in Altona on Friday. Mr Lindsay served as mayor from 1984-85 and was president of the Rotary Club of West Footscray from 1988-89. He was recognised as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1996.

A qualified civil engineer, Mr Lindsay found his calling in school teaching and became principal of several western suburbs’ schools, including the former Williamstown Technical School. Fellow Rotarian and close friend Peter Hollings said Mr Lindsay had a “very strong attitude to community service and international works”. “[He was] a man’s man who was quite gregarious, but once he made a friend, it’s amazing how close people felt to him,” he said. Newspaper archives from the time show that

when sworn in as mayor, Mr Lindsay said he felt like he was on stage in his Williamstown theatre group. “I feel like I’m back in the Little Theatre again, like I’m back in costume, but I guess I’ll have to get used to it,” he was quoted by the Williamstown Advertiser Advertiser. Mr Lindsay moved from Williamstown to Bacchus Marsh and became secretary of the nearby Coimadai fire brigade. He is survived by his wife, Joan, children Catherine, Michelle, Mark and Andrew, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Community spirit recalled

Race to the Finnish line Altona will host possibly the largest gathering of Finnish people in Australia after being selected to host the Finnish Festival at Easter. Finland’s ambassador Lars Backstrom will open the three-day event, which celebrates 100 years of Finnish independence, at 10am on Good Friday, April 14. The Melbourne Finnish Society’s Anneli Jortikka said festivities would centre around the community’s headquarters – Finnish Hall in Pier Street – as well as the Altona theatre and nearby sports fields. “It’s an annual event, and it’s hosted by a different city or Finnish club every year,” she said. “This year is important because Finland celebrates its 100 years of independence from Russia. It’s basically to keep the Finnish culture alive. “One of the big things that we do is we play Finnish baseball – pesapallo – which is different to the American baseball,” she said.

There will also be competitions in log-throwing, and even some comedy. The force is strong here By Goya Dmytryshchak Scienceworks at Spotswood has unveiled plans to attract more adults in future as it this week celebrates its 25th anniversary. Manager Nurin Veis said the science and technology venue was attracting about half a million visitors annually – double the number it was originally built for. However, one of her goals is to put on exhibitions that appeal beyond young children and families.

‘‘

We’ve got some … out-of-body experience - Nurin Veis exhibitions

’’

“At the Science Museum in London, there’s a big exhibitions on robots, and that’s an exhibition that appeals to visitors of all ages,” Ms Veis said. “We are in the process of negotiating with them to see if we could possibly bring that out to Scienceworks. “That’s got old robots from the past, and it traces the history of where robots have all come from … then we look at examples which are cutting-edge robots that are coming out of Japan at the moment.” The most popular exhibition in Scienceworks’ history has been Star Wars, which featured more than 80 costumes and items from all six films, transported in temperature-controlled conditions. However, Ms Veis said exhibitions developed in-house, such as House Secrets, Toys and Think Ahead, were her personal favourites. “We’ve got some highly-immersive, out-ofbody-experience exhibitions coming up, which

we are developing in-house,” she said. “We’ve actually got exhibitions opening next year, which are for the 13-15 year olds, called Beyond Perception, and it will deal with issues of dark matter and gravitational waves.

“Next year … we do have an American exhibition coming out called Above and Beyond, and that is all about flying. “We are creating a Scienceworks where you will never want to stop coming here.”

EPA tires of tyre stockpile A Brooklyn company has been fined for the second time this year for failing to reduce the fire and community health risk caused by its stockpile of tyres. Tyre-Lug Services (Barro Group Pty Ltd) was this month fined more than $7700 for failing to comply with an order by the Environment Protection Authority to rearrange its stockpile as required under Victorian Fire Services’ tyre storage guidelines. Earlier this year, the Market Road business was fined more than $7700 for storing the equivalent of about 150,000 standard car tyres without an EPA licence. Last November, the company was ordered to either obtain a licence or reduce its number of tyres. EPA metro manager Daniel Hunt said the business still had no licence and if the site, which had no firefighting equipment, caught fire it could be an environmental disaster. “Once ignited, tyre fires are very hard to control and generate hazardous smoke,” he said. “This smoke can cause a health risk to the community through the inhalation of particles and chemicals.” The company has until April 30 to reduce its stockpile or obtain a licence, or else face further sanctions. Mr Hunt said fines up to $777,300 could be imposed if the case went to court. If anyone suspects tyres are being illegally stockpiled they can call EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 372 842. MY PLACE Kingsville comedian Perri Cassie tells Benjamin Miller of his love for the west’s understated charm and being spoilt for choice as he sips his way along Seddon’s cafe strip.

I originally moved from Sydney to Melbourne in 2000, for my dad’s work. We moved into Altona Meadows and were in a rental place for a few months before my parents bought a house, the same one they’ve been in for 16 years now. I moved out but wanted to stay in the west, so I’m in Seddon now. Still close to home, but not too close for unexpected parent drop-ins. What do you love most about the area? I think you get a lot of the art and cafÊ culture, but with the quiet state of suburbia. I really do love the west, I love the weatherboard housing; I don’t think it matters what position I end up in life – this is the side for me. There’s an understated charm to it that people tend to overlook. I think an issue that still frustrates me is the traffic and lack of infrastructure, they’re about to add all of these suburbs but have no plans for additional roads. Do you have a favourite local place or places to spend time? I spend most of my time on Charles Street in Seddon drinking coffee at one of the cafes. I am not very loyal because they’re all so good, I go to a different one each day of the week just to be fair to them all. How did you become involved in comedy and what keeps you coming back for more? I was a writer for a long time and decided I

needed more attention, so I stepped in front of a microphone. What keeps me coming back is I haven’t gotten enough attention yet. What can you tell us about your upcoming Melbourne International Comedy Festival show? My show Channel Perri is my debut hour. Last year I had a split bill show and sold out the entire run, but now I’m by myself in a much bigger venue, so I want to eclipse that. It’s a collection of jokes about the world I barely pay attention to because I’m always on my phone. All my energy is focused on my show at the moment, but hopefully with enough ticket sales I’ll be able to fund a trip to America and do some shows there. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? I think a lot of people are surprised that I used to be quite athletic. I am now both doughy and string-like in physique, but I used to play lacrosse for Footscray as well as the state’s metropolitan side. I also played soccer for Altona East and Altona City at reserve level, I was genuinely pretty good. However, I now have shortness of breath from typing this. Perri Cassie’s ‘Channel Perri’ will be performed at The Unknown Union @ 1000 ÂŁ Bend, 361 Little Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, from 9pm nightly April 12-23. Tickets $10-$15 via comedyfestival.com.au and at the door.

SAVE OUR SONS The lengths — or steps — Elie Eid will go to in an effort to help his son literally know no bounds. On March 21, Elie will set out on a tough 300km walk around Melbourne’s bay for the 2017 Walk to Save Our Sons, an event he started to help children like his son, Emilio, who is living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Duchenne is a severe muscle wasting condition, which affects one in 3500 children and 99 per cent are boys. Currently, there is no cure and it results in early death.

This year’s Walk To Save Our Sons, supported by national partner Chemist Warehouse, will take place over 10 days from March 21-31, starting at Queen Victoria Market. During the walk, staff will cheer on the participants and each store will present Elie with a cheque for funds raised by them. To help walkers along their journey, the Chemist Warehouse Wellness van will be with the team every step of the way. Donation tins will be placed at all 300 Chemist Warehouse stores nationwide to raise money towards the campaign. For the first time, the Walk to Save Our Sons is opening 150 spots for Last Day Walkers to join the movement for the final 2.5km and be part of the fanfare as they are welcomed to the finish line at Crown. The 2017 Walk to Save Our Sons, along with a gala event at Crown Palladium at the conclusion of the walk, aims to raise $1.2 million.

SAVOURY GOES SWEET Foodies like me (and especially those with a sweet tooth) tend to get very excited about Easter. Every year around this time, arriving for a breakfast shift at the radio station where I work, the smell of freshly baked hot cross buns wafts up from the bakery downstairs. As if that’s not temptation enough, the Coles next door has an Easter egg display that seems to get bigger and more colourful every year. The end result, of course, is that some of us (not mentioning any names!) tend to overdo it on the sweet stuff, then loll about like beached whales suffering from sugar overload. Except for my 11-year-old son. I think I have the only kid in Australia who “saves” his more impressive Easter eggs for display purposes. Last year’s favourite – a chocolate soccer ball egg the size of a small country – went straight to the pool room! There are a few tricks to getting the healthy/naughty balance right – and chocolate hummus is one of them. Serve it with pretzels, pita bread, fruit slices and vegie sticks as a more nutritious and substantial alternative to those endless eggs!

Just rinse and drain a 400g can of chickpeas, then blitz in a food processor along with the flesh of half an avocado, two pitted medjool dates, two tablespoons each of maple syrup and dark cocoa powder and a ¼ cup of warm water. Add a little bit of extra water if needed. Spoon mixture into a bowl and serve. Because it’s a mix of savoury and sweet, it can be used as a starter or a dessert – or just an easy snack for the kids. If they love regular hummus, they’ll really go for this. Thanks to the April issue of Taste magazine for this recipe.

F E A T U R E

The older folks, by any other name Who knew? Donald Trump is called Mr Trump by his grandchildren – or so the pundits claim. And here’s you, thinking that Gum-gum from your own grandies was ‘a bit different”. When we have a peek into the world of celebrity grandparent names, we find a smorgasbord of the common through to the downright peculiar. Take, for example, the late Joan Rivers whose grandkids called her either Grammy (so far, so normal) or Nanna New Face. Could that be Joan’s “first defence is attack” choice, or did the kids get creatively concise? Lionel Richie, of course, went for “down with the kids” cool. G-Pa is his grandfatherly moniker, maybe in readiness for a seamless transition to: “Gee Pa, can I have a Ferrari?” Goldie Hawn’s son’s kids call her Glam-ma. Now tell me that doesn’t pile upkeep-pressure on her, when she secretly wants to live in uggies? Goldie’s daughter’s kids, meanwhile, go with the friendly, chirpy Gogo.

“Sharon Osbourne goes for Shazza, which hits just the right note for a plain-spoken woman..” His grandkids call him Peach, but has Martin Sheen scored that name for his smooth cheeks, his fruitiness – or is he just a real peach of a man in their eyes, where it counts most? Debbie Reynolds went by Abba Dabba, perhaps referencing her Wilma Rubble-type looks. Yeah, that’s a stretch, but Abba Dabba does have a certain sweetness, just like her 1968 movie How Sweet It Is! Sharon Osbourne goes for Shazza, which hits just the right note for a plain-spoken woman who, laudably, doesn’t mind any bogan tag. And Sally Field, she of the blindingly humble Oscar thank-you moment, is Granny – no grandstanding for her. The no-nonsense Martha Stewart has a similarly no-nonsense grandmotherly name: Martha. Maybe she ran out of fanciness after plating up 40 million dishes and tying 10 million bows; she was just simplifying things. She wanted “Wolf”, but Blythe Danner wound up being called Lalo, which could be construed as good advice (lay low) from her grandkids who must’ve known that Wolf is genuinely weird. Nor would they want people to think they were calling their dog.

“They call me Mr Trump.” (Getty Images)

So, all you grandparents-in-waiting, be alert but not alarmed: what your grandies call you can certainly turn heads. Carole Levy

This updated Edwardian gem is set among established gardens in a great pocket of Footscray. A secure scooter/bicycle bay leads to a welcoming hall with original polished boards. The beautifully proportioned living-dining room has heritage, turned-wood and ornate plaster wall, door and ceiling features and gorgeous lead-light windows, plus a contemporary gas fireplace in traditional style. A kitchen renovation has reclaimed the traditional heart of the house, with hardwood benchtops and country-esque wooden cupboards. The spacious bedrooms all open onto the garden. The bathroom features honey-coloured wood floorboards set against white subway tiling. A full-sized laundry is next to a powder room. There is ducted heating, evaporative cooling, solar panels and a water tank. Secure parking is behind automatic gates … off street parking is on-title.

This Federation-style property is in a lovely residential pocket, close to parkland. Enter via a fully-tiled hall, with a study to the left and the main bedroom to the right, which has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The lounge room ahead is carpeted and light-filled, wrapping round the large kitchen, with its smart, white colour palette, stainless-steel appliances and cupboard space galore. The family-meals zone beyond is tiled, and bifold doors open from here to a great backyard with a pergola. There is also a powder room downstairs. Upstairs, the main bathroom with shower and bath, and two more bedrooms with built-in wardrobes flank a third living zone. The retreat here is great for kids. Evaporative cooling, ducted heating, fans, two split-systems, automatic internal blinds, purpose-built storage, a rainwater tank and a double garage complete the picture.

This is a townhouse for a large family, built by a large family, with space and storage as well as style and quality. There’s three bathrooms, two living rooms and the state-of-the-art kitchen has soft-close cabinetry, Caesarstone benchtops, a walk-in pantry and a waterfall island bench. Smeg appliances and an induction top also feature. The alfresco dining area is hard-plumbed to gas, and an outdoor kitchen makes entertaining a breeze. Upstairs, there are four good-sized bedrooms (three with built-in wardrobes), the main with en suite and walk-in wardrobe. Built-in cabinetry and hidden storage is everywhere, helping keep the lines clean and the look minimalist. This cutting-edge property is in a top spot near schools, shops and parks in a popular pocket of Newport, on a block of about 278 square metres.

This double-fronted Victorian-era belle is ripe for a revamp (STCA), although the bones are good here. It’s set in the heart of Yarraville village, its cast-iron lacework verandah among the many in this neighbourhood. Set on a decent-sized block with a wide street frontage, there’s plenty of scope for a revamp, or live in it just as it comes. The house has three large bedrooms with high ceilings, and a generous hall. There’s a separate living area next to the kitchen opening out to the backyard. With a large central bathroom and a full-sized laundry, this is a great floor plan to work up, all just a stroll to Ballarat Street cafes, organic grocers and the town square, with the Sun Theatre and the community-created permanent garden in between the cinema and bars, cafes and restaurants, all awaiting.

WILLIAMSTOWN 43B Cole Street, 3016 Raine & Horne Williamstown: 9397 6167

Price: $1.89 million

If you’ve ever visited Williamstown on a weekend, you’ve probably been to Nelson Place. The popular shopping strip includes restaurants, cafes and ice creameries, and is just across the street from parkland and the ocean. It exudes a holiday atmosphere, yet it’s so close to the city you can see the CBD across the bay … simply put, it’s breathtaking. This executive townhouse is just moments from downtown Williamstown, and living at 43B Cole Street would put you at the heart of an amazing neighbourhood. Across from Robertson Reserve and in the

dress circle of this much lauded postcode, this townhouse has proportions greater than it seems. Walk through double doors to an open, light-filled atrium and living zone. A gas fireplace is the first of numerous features – set within this first of three living zones – with views of the attractive front garden and park beyond. Two bedrooms are on the ground floor with a beautifully appointed main bathroom, with frameless shower and separate bath. The second bedroom at the rear of the ground floor has double glass doors opening

3

Private sale to an L-shaped courtyard and retreat space. This is a great feature and could easily be converted to a second master with hotel suite proportions. There’s also a full laundry at ground level, and the second of the living zones. Upstairs, the main bedroom has its own private balcony, a walk-in wardrobe and another beautiful bathroom. This en suite has been dressed to mirror the main bathroom below. The open-plan kitchen-living zone on this level is illuminated by the double height atrium at the entrance, and the wrap-around front balcony.

The kitchen is well appointed with Miele kitchen appliances (including a 900mm entertainer’s oven) and offers plenty of storage cupboards and bench space. The third living room is huge and light filled – a second gas fire is inviting. These kinds of proportions are rare in this part of town. Spotted gum hardwood floorboards and designer light fittings, reverse cycle, zoned heating and cooling and large garage via laneway access – this is a stunning find. Sam Freestone

New Seagull keeps on learning By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown’s new general manager of football, Stephen Soulsby, has taken the road less travelled to the VFL. Soulsby, 32, who grew up in Warrnambool, “wasn’t the greatest footballer”, by his own admission, but he was passionate about the game, playing local junior football and moving up to the senior ranks before beginning a new chapter. Soulsby’s career took off once he hung up the boots and went into sports management. At the young age of 25, Soulsby landed the job of chief executive at the Hampden Football Netball League. “I was very young in the role, so you’re always going to make mistakes, but as with anything in life, you learn from those,” Soulsby said. “I did that for two years and I certainly learned a lot.” It was that role that kick-started Soulsby’s career path in football. He has not stood still since, landing jobs with St Mary’s in the Northern Territory Football League and Eastlake in the North East Australian Football League. “I’m taking a step each time up the ladder in terms of the level of competition,” Soulsby said. When Williamstown advertised for its football general manager after Chris Dixon departed for Collingwood, Soulsby did not have to think twice about applying. He wants to reach the big league of the AFL and the best way to get there is through the VFL. “Being back in Victoria, you’re able to connect and work with the AFL clubs,” Soulsby said. “It’s the little things you can continue to learn in and around the AFL system.”

Soulsby was attracted to the Seagulls because of their recent success. With that comes the pressure of having to help keep the club at its high level. “As we know, they’ve been very successful over a number of years, especially the last 10,” he said. “Walking in day one, and through the conversations before coming on board, you can see they set very high standards from an on-field point of view and that’s reflected in the results they get.” While Soulsby will work closely with Williamstown coach Andrew Collins, it’s not only the on-field results for which he will be responsible. As well as making sure the Seagulls continue to be compliant with AFL Victoria regulations, Soulsby will focus on the continued development of people within the club, including players, coaches and staff. “A key focus of the role is looking to assist and making sure the players and staff are developing themselves off the field,” Soulsby said. “I know the club has done a lot of work in that area and will continue to do so. “Not only are they successful on the field, but they’re looked after from an off-field point of view in terms of … life outside of footy, if and when that time comes. “So as much as we want the players to get the most out of themselves, it’s the same for our staff. We give them the opportunities to build themselves up in their own areas that they want to focus on from a career point of view and work with them and assist them in their development.” Stephen Soulsby is enjoying his new role at Williamstown. 45 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 29, 2017

SPORT Pocket Rockets put training to the test Shield came fourth in both the 100-metre and 200-metre events, which suggests more to come from this capable young athlete. Thushana Sri produced a number of outstanding performances in the under-nine competition to win silver in the long jump and bronze in the discus. Patrick Aquilina had a memorable titles, scooping bronze in the under-12 100-metres final in a time of 12.98. There was just 0.34 seconds separating the first four places, capping a super season for Aquilina, who represented Victoria at December’s national championships. “This was a fantastic result, not just for the individual medallists but the range of our performances across all ages and disciplines, with many of our athletes achieving personal bests,” Rockets’ team manager Nicole Williams said. Altona held its club championship day last Saturday, before attention turns to the upcoming winter cross-country season. For more information about the Altona Rockets Little Athletics Club, go to www. altonalac.com.au.

Jets lose head of steam By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets’ coach Torin Baker was encouraged by his team’s first-up performance in the TAC Cup, even if it was beaten by Northern Knights in a roller-coaster season opener at Ikon Park on Sunday. The Jets fought back from a 25-point quarter-time deficit with dominant second and third periods, which saw them hold a two-goal lead late in the third. But the Knights had restored parity by three-quarter time, skipping clear in the fourth quarter to record a 16-point win. “The boys cracked in and were able to turn around the match when things didn’t go well early,” Baker said. “We’ve got the effort where we want it to be; we’ve got the pressure in our game, and, had we executed a little better, we might’ve been sitting on the other side of the result.” The Jets used the ball to a high level when mounting their comeback. Unfortunately, it all came undone when the Knights got on top in the game. “It was a fairly even contest from the point of inside 50 entries for most of the day,” Baker said. “They really made the most of their opportunities and when we went forward, we just didn’t use the footy like we wanted.” Turnovers in TAC Cup football often get punished. When the Jets missed their forward targets, the Knights were red-hot in turning them into attacking moves. “They’d rebound out of our 50 and score,” Baker said. “That was a pattern for a few of their goals. “It’s difficult to lock the ball in [on a turnover] because of the TAC Cup’s anti-density rule. “You can’t press up like in the AFL, and you’ve got to have five forwards over halfway, so it gives a lot of space to teams rebounding out of 50 to spot up targets and work their way down the other end.” Lachlan Fogarty, Cam Rayner and Judah Dundon had blistering starts to the season for the Jets. All three midfielders were dangerous inside 50 with two goals apiece. Fogarty was the clear standout, though, and looks prime for a huge top-age under-18 season. “He was outstanding all day, defensively and offensively,” Baker said. “His work rate is quite outstanding.” The Jets face local rivals Calder Cannons at Rams Arena on Saturday at 10am.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ An

avid Bulldogs fan emailed me this week asking why this column, and this newspaper in general, has little coverage of the Bulldogs in the sports pages. The answer is pretty simple. AFL football gets numerous pages in the daily newspapers and enough radio and television coverage to sink a ship. The Bulldogs’ AFL premiership win was big news and Star Weekly covered it accordingly. I often include titbits about Bulldogs players in this column, but only when it is something you have not read elsewhere. Suburban football gets nothing in the dailies unless it involves a brawl or a scandal. I love local footy, and I include VFL football in that. The players, coaches and people involved at those levels deserve public recognition for their achievements and the time and hard work they put into the game. I hope there will always be a place for second and third-tier levels of the game and that newspapers, such as the one you are reading, will cover those competitions.

■ WRFL

footy gets under way this Saturday with Deer Park unfurling yet another premiership flag (fourth in a row) when it hosts Altona at John McLeod Oval. Many of the Lions’ premiership heroes have moved on and Marc Bullen is now in a non-playing coaching role. It’s interesting that only two of the 10 division 1 sides now have playing coaches. Chris O’Keefe (Albion) and Daniel Bunworth (Wyndhamvale Falcons) will perform the dual roles in 2017. It might be the last year of the playing coach at division 1 level.

■ Caroline

Springs will make its division 1 debut this Saturday and will celebrate the unfurling of its division 2 flag and a reunion of the first senior side that played Braybrook in April, 2011. The Lakers go into this season with high hopes – game one against Albion will be a fair indicator of where they sit in the pecking order.

■ The

Col from Colac Gala in aid of Colin Newcombe is looming as one of the biggest nights for local sport – it’s on Wednesday, April 19, at Melrose Melbourne in Tullamarine from 6.30pm. Ian Cover will MC and speakers will include Merv Hughes, Glenn James, Charlie Bezzina, Matt Keenan and no doubt a few surprises. Altona Little Athletics Centre has come away with two golds, a silver and two bronze medals from the Victorian Little Athletics track and field championships at Lakeside Stadium. The Rockets won medals in a variety of disciplines, from sprints and distance running, to jumps and throws. While the Rockets’ medal tally was slightly down on previous years, nine more athletes reached finals for top eight finishes. “Over the last few years, we’ve made significant changes to our coaching structure and we’re now seeing the results,” Rockets’ president Dan Shield said. Ella Vrhovac and Amber Shield were the talk of the town after gold medal efforts. Vrhovac took out the under-nine 400 metres, while Shield won the under-10 70-metre sprint. Vrhovac showed her quality, winning by almost three seconds in a time of 1:10.09, to go with her fourth placing in the 200 metres. Although 70 metres is the shortest distance for sprinters, Shield demonstrated the importance of maintaining technique by coming from sixth place to power home to the gold medal in 10.58.

Underdogs bring another title to Clubbers dynasty

Emmett Bronca’s Yarraville Club is the undisputed No.1 side in the VTCA. (Damian Visentini)

Yarraville Club has made it nine premierships in 15 seasons in Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The underdog Clubbers cruised to their third flag from the past four summers with an eight-wicket win over Greenvale Kangaroos, the minor premiers, at Donald McLean Reserve. The premiership had fast bowler Emmett Bronca’s fingerprints all over it. The paceman, a constant thorn in the side of the Greenvale batsmen, finished with 12 wickets for the match. Bronca took 5-53 off 13 overs in the first innings, restricting the Kangaroos to a modest 150. The Clubbers eased past the first-innings’ target with a score of 228 to lead by 78 runs at the game’s mid-point. Bronca backed up in the second innings with a stunning 7-74 off 25.4 overs to have the Kangaroos out for 164 – a virtually

undefendable lead of 86. The Clubbers batsmen once again had no trouble picking off the runs, reaching 2-92 in 25 overs. Will Sheridan put on a show for the Clubbers with 48 in the second dig, including seven fours and a six. It capped a fine game for Sheridan, who made 43 in the first innings. The pick of the Clubbers’ batsmen, though, was Andrew Cullen, who produced a captain’s knock of 88 in the first innings to set up the win. Joey Blake continued his sizzling finals series with 46 to go with the 70 he made in the semi-final against Spotswood. It was a special premiership for Yarraville Club, which is likely to farewell coach and club stalwart Michael O’Keefe in the off season. In north-west B1, West Newport could not muster enough runs in its grand final against Royal Park-Brunswick, going down on first innings at the Western Oval. Trailing by 14 runs after the first dig, Wests produced 183 for a lead of 169 after a stop-start

innings, with Brad Dawson leading the way with 54. Royal Park-Brunswick eased to stumps on the last day on 3-129 – 40 runs short of an outright but making the side premier nonetheless. In west A1, Williamstown Imperials produced a gutsy run chase to beat Seabrook by two wickets in the grand final at Saltwater Reserve. Set 232 for victory, the Imperials looked to be stagnating at times, but they eventually got there. A 56-run sixth wicket partnership between Glen Robson (68) and Rob Gibbins (31) got the run chase back on track after the Imps had struggled to 5-104. Luke Hudson (33 not out) and Ben Butcher (18) brought it home for Imperials, who made 8-232 in 110.3 overs. Lance Jenkinson

Double ton in dream run By Lance Jenkinson “It was surreal.” There were no other words to describe Seddon’s incredible grand final win over Sunshine United in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north west division at Laverton Park on Sunday, according to Docker’s secretary Rolf Tamburro. Tamburro must have felt like all his dreams had come true as he watched his beloved club win the season-decider by a mammoth 241 runs and book their place in the top-flight senior division next summer. “At one stage we were 3-340, and you couldn’t in your wildest dreams think that would be our score,” Tamburro said. From the first ball, Seddon was in control … the main man for the Dockers was opening batsman Ben Speake, who produced a performance of the ages, batting for two-and-a-bit days en route to 216, including 24 fours and one six. On the first weekend, he batted a marathon 160 overs, and seemed set to stay forever. Speake’s body would have been aching late on day two, but he pulled through to hold his bat over the course of the weekend. “What he achieved was just phenomenal,” Tamburro said. “I remember him coming off the first day, he was about 109 not out, and he said: ‘It’s still not enough’. “He was exhausted at the end of last week after two days, but it was more mental than physical, because he’s a fit lad and he did a bit of running on a big ground and a slowish outfield. “The concentration it took to bat 160 overs was phenomenal.” It was not totally a one-man band for Seddon. While Speake’s double ton over-shadowed the knocks of teammates Duleeka Thisakuttige (63), John Taylor (56) and Liam Braithwaite (60), neither his own massive haul, nor the side’s total of 462, would have been possible without support from the other end. “Ben’s 200 was obviously fantastic, but there was three other 50s,” Tamburro said. “It was a fantastic team effort. You’re not going to make a massive score without that support.” Sunshine United wasn’t given a sniff in the game. Daniel Norris fought hard for the Tigers with 107 not out, but his side was bowled out for 221. Seddon’s wily veteran spinner Tom Kriebardis came to the fore with 3-61 off 43 overs. Kriebardis continues to defy age to be the leading wicket-taker for the Dockers. “Tommy’s in his 50s and has been in the ones since he was 17,” Tamburro said. “His bowling is just phenomenal … all year he’s been impossible to hit. He’s a smart bowler, of course, with his experience. “The young blokes are rapt to play alongside Tommy.” Spinner Hayden Dryiski chimed in with 2-91

off 33. Kriebardis (39 wickets) and Dryiski (33) have combined to take 72 wickets this summer. Seddon is heading to the senior division in 2017-18. The Dockers have some celebrating to do before turning their attention to the likes

of future opponents Yarraville Club and Greenvale Kangaroos. “We really haven’t thought about it yet,” Tamburro said. “You’ve got to enjoy this first because grand finals don’t happen often. “We’re enjoying this moment.”

The writing was on the wall early for Altona in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group grand final at Gordon Barnard Reserve at the weekend. The A’s suffered a top-order batting collapse and could generate only 113 in 69.4 overs – nowhere near enough for their bowlers to defend. It was all single figure scores for Altona’s top five batsmen. Only some gritty middle-to-lower order batting saw the A’s avoid getting bowled out for less than 100. Sean Hollins (12), Adam Brown (18) and Mitchell Cullen (16) tried to get the A’s to a respectable score, but they had been left with too much to do. Balwyn’s bowling card was perfection, with Lachlan Fitzpatrick leading the way with a miserly 3-22 off 19.4 overs. It was tough going for the batsmen, so Altona was never going to wave the white flag – no matter how dire the situation. In Shannon Clarke and David Kinsella, the A’s had two in-form bowlers ready to rip in. Both were impressive again, with Clarke taking 1-28 off 22 overs and Kinsella 2-40 off 14.5. Stefan Sidari kept it tight with 0-15 off 12, while Hollins was the other multiple wicket taker with 2-12 off five. Had Altona had another 50 runs to defend, it might have gone down to the wire. But a slow and steady Balwyn managed the run chase to perfection, winning by five wickets and leaving the A’s to ponder what might have been. Lance Jenkinson

Vikings put faith in rising stars and new blood Altona was a goal and loose change away from reaching last year’s Western Region Football League division 1 grand final. The Vikings emerged as genuine contenders in a bounce-back season under coach Saade Ghazi, so the expectations are high going into 2017. On paper, the Vikings look significantly stronger, having retained the bulk of their list and brought in some key signings. But Ghazi has warned his players that new recruits alone will not be enough to bridge the gap between a preliminary final and a spot in the big dance at season’s end. “We enjoyed last season – it was a big tick for the football club – but we’ve had to move away from that pretty quickly,” he said. “We know that this year will be even harder again, so the focus is on how we’re going to improve. I think a lot of that improvement will come from within.” Ghazi is keen to see if stars such as Jordan Robbins and Travis Lunardi can take their game up another level to become elite WRFL players.

The Vikings promoted a number of youngsters last season who could be ready to stake their claims on starting line-up spots. There is also excitement surrounding key position player Jayden Post, who missed the latter part of last season. “He’s not a new recruit, but we didn’t have him for the last six weeks of the year, so that’s really important to our structure, to get him up and going,” Ghazi said. “He played last week in a practice match and got through really well.” One player can make a big difference to the structure of a football side and for Altona that looks like being recruit Mark Paget. Paget has the ability to hold down the No.1 ruck position, potentially allowing Josh Rafferty to play more as a forward. Ghazi felt it was important to bring in another recognised ruckman after the elimination of the third man up in the ruck contests. “He’s been living in Altona for a couple of years, so he’s sort of been under our noses,” Ghazi said. “He played at East Doncaster last year and was first ruck in the second division team of the year.”

The domino effect will also be felt in the Altona midfield this season with the signing of Steven Kennedy. Kennedy was a dominant player for Darley in the Ballarat Football League and his arrival at Sugargum Drive will further strengthen the Vikings’ midfield. At the top of Ghazi’s wish-list was getting players with polished foot skills – with Kennedy and Josh Macdonald, brought in from Glen Orden, fitting the bill. “They’re both elite kicks and that’s going to help our team,” Ghazi said. Altona has a tough opening month, starting with a trip to four-time defending champion Deer Park on Saturday. “We know we’re the underdogs going in, let’s be clear about that, but it’s a new year and every club out playing footy in round one is optimistic of a victory, no matter who you’re playing against,” Ghazi said. “It gives us a bit of confidence that we did beat them last year once.” Lance Jenkinson

Woodsmen cut to chase By Lance Jenkinson Top of the list of priorities for Spotswood heading into the new season is arresting its slide in Western Region Football League division 1. The Woodsmen have brought in well-respected coach Anthony Eames to ensure the downward trend does not continue in 2017. Since their last premiership in 2011, the Woodsmen have been in a gradual decline, finishing runners-up in three consecutive seasons, fourth in 2015 and, alarmingly, fifth last season. “The club is not used to being a middle-of-the-rung club, so it was crucial from their perspective that some changes were put in place,” Eames said. The regeneration process began when Eames took over as coach of Spotswood in the off season. There were few bigger names available in the WRFL coaching pool than Eames, a man who dragged Altona to relevancy again with a flag in 2012, and who has overseen the WRFL interleague program. Talking to people around McLean Reserve over summer, Eames got the feeling some Woodsmen may have taken their eyes off the ball in the past two seasons, so his main aim was to get the training standards back to the optimum level. “It’s more an increase in the commitment levels required from players, which they’ve all bought into,” Eames said. “Our fitness levels needed to go up, and that’s taken place. “We’ve changed the structure of training and that’s made a difference. Things are looking alright for us, but it doesn’t guarantee anything.” What Eames has admired about Spotswood from afar has been the club’s willingness to promote from within. The Woodsmen have always been strong about developing their own talent and only top up externally on an as-needs basis. So Eames’ first mission was to see if he could woo back some of the homegrown talent the Woodsmen had lost in recent years. Eames struck gold with the return of former premiership players Wayne Patak and David Isbister. “Spotty’s strength is not necessarily the players it recruits, it’s the players that come from within,” Eames said. “Our mainstays are our born and bred … those players are still there this year, and they’re fitter this year than previous years.” To keep up with the leaders, Spotswood had to cast its net outside the fold to find recruits who could improve the squad. The biggest of them all is new ruckman Dylan Jones, once listed with VFL club Werribee. Jones, who has played most of his football

with St Kevin’s Old Boys in the amateurs, is not a total stranger to the Woodsmen. “He’s a local boy and his dad played in a premiership at Spotswood back in the 1970s,” Eames said. “He’s athletic, he’s got a good set of hands and he’s going to play a variety of roles.” Gareth Newton came from second tier

Yarraville-Seddon and will offer flexibility to play forward or back. Lachlan Fairley is back after being struck down with an ACL last season, and Murray Boyd returns as captain. So Spotswood’s vibe is positive heading into Saturday’s season opener against Sunshine Kangaroos.

Altona Magic in super start Altona Magic has made a bright start to the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Sydenham Park at Paisley Park on Saturday evening. The Magic, playing in a league match for the first time under new coach Goran Lozanovski, found an early lead through a thunderbolt goal from Kliment Dimitrieski in the 10th minute. Sydenham Park found an equaliser before half-time. It took the Magic until the 78th minute to finally secure the three points, through Adamson Ajayi in a goal-mouth scramble. The Magic, the defending state league 1 champion, has picked up where it left off last season. The aim is to earn promotion to the NPL Victoria competition at season’s end. Yarraville Glory has also made a fast start, beating Westgate 4-2 on the road on Saturday. Altona East Phoenix was pipped 1-0 by Banyule City in its season opener at Yallambie Park Reserve. In state league 2, Altona City drew 1-1 with Cairnlea at Kim Reserve on Saturday night. City had the lead at half-time through an Ayodeji Omoboye goal, but could not keep the visitors out in the second half. In state league 3, Melbourne City went down 6-0 to Brimbank Stallions at the Club Italia Sporting Club. The Stallions scored three times in each half to pile on the misery for new City coach Ben Smyth. On Monday night Williamstown dominated Sunbury United 7-0 at JT Gray Reserve. In state league 4, Altona North blinked first in an entertaining 3-2 loss to North Melbourne Athletic at Duane Reserve. In state league 5, Laverton Park saluted in Alfonso Opazo’s first game in charge, beating Keilor Wolves 4-2 at Laverton Park Reserve, while Maribyrnong Greens cruised to a 3-1 win over Melbourne Lions at Skinner Reserve. In the women’s Team App Cup on Sunday, Yarraville Glory had a whopping 13-1 win over Gisborne in the second round at Dixon Field Reserve. Maidstone United won 3-1 over Hoppers Crossing at McKechnie Reserve. Lance Jenkinson

Work to do for erratic Bulldogs By Lance Jenkinson The Western Bulldogs produced some breathtaking football in the inaugural AFL Women’s competition – but only in sample sizes. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves must have been pulling his hair out over his side’s fluctuating form – not only from game to game, but from quarter to quarter. The best example came in the six-point loss to Carlton at Ikon Park. The Bulldogs were scintillating in the final quarter, nearly stealing victory at the death, but where was that energy for the first three-quarters of the match? Inconsistency within games was the Bulldogs’ major downfall. They also relied too heavily on top-end stars, with depth seemingly falling away sharply. That’s something that will need to be addressed in the off season if the Dogs are to take the next step in 2018. The final nail in the coffin of the Bulldogs’ first AFLW season was their woeful inaccuracy in front of goal. In all bar one of their seven matches, the Dogs kicked more behinds than goals, preventing them from putting scoreboard pressure on their opponents. While a sixth-place finish with two wins from seven starts was not to the Bulldogs’ liking, there was enough to like about the side to suggest the ground-work has been laid for a successful future. The highlight: It’s hard to look past the season opener as the high point of the Bulldogs’ season. A history-making night saw the full house sign put up at the Victoria University Whitten Oval for the Bulldogs’ first win in

the competition. They smashed Fremantle by 32 points. The crowd was a precursor to the massive throngs that would follow the Bulldogs at Barkly Street in the following three weeks. The lowlight: During Friday night football in round two, the Bulldogs drew another massive crowd and expectations were high after their first-up win. All the stats pointed to a close contest. The scoring shots were dead even, but the Bulldogs wound up 25 points down after kicking 2.11 for the game. Compounding the loss, star forward Katie Brennan succumbed to an ankle injury and would miss the rest of the season. While it was still early in the season, it was a momentum-sapping night from which the Bulldogs never recovered. The stand-outs: Emma Kearney, top three in disposals in the competition, was magnificent in the centre. Ellie Blackburn, who played both midfield and forward, had an uncanny knack of creating something out of nothing. Special mentions to half-back Hannah Scott, one of the better ball users in the side and so courageous in her attack on the contest; Tiarna Ernst, who rucked one-out in a lot of games; Angelica Gogos, who averaged 6.1 tackles per game; and Lauren Spark, who read the play well across half-back. Next chapter: It will be interesting to see how the Bulldogs use the draft and trade period in the off season. The Bulldogs have great leaders, reliable top-end talent and a young list that will only grow in prowess with another pre-season, but they were exposed for depth in season one and that should be addressed in the winter months.
