Park gangs prey on men Police are stepping up patrols in Footscray Park in response to a spate of homophobic attacks. In a series of violent incidents since January, victims have reported being abused or lured and set upon by groups of men. Warnings about the attacks have been shared on gay hook-up websites, such as Squirt, and a number of incidents have been reported to the Victorian AIDS Council (VAC). Squirt users have written of attacks by groups of men “looking for trouble”, and jumping out of bushes with bars.

VAC chief executive Simon Ruth told Star Weekly that violent homophobic incidents have been occurring in parks and public places around Melbourne since January, and particularly at Footscray Park. These include homophobic abuse, physical violence and death threats, as men are lured to secluded areas then confronted by large groups of men. “Homophobia is always very concerning, and all violence is absolutely unacceptable – nobody should need to feel unsafe,” Mr Ruth said. “We are working hard to build the confidence of people to come to us or go to the police, but

a problem down there to let us know; it could stop it happening to someone else.” Inspector Healy said police have worked with the VAC to spread warnings via gay dating app Grindr and signs posted at the park. He said in his experience it has been vital to catch offenders before the problem escalates. “My biggest concern with this sort of pack behaviour, picking off vulnerable people, is that you can get even more violent attacks.” Report suspicious incidents to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or VAC on 9865 6700. ■ Crime

given the nature of these spaces, we can only assume most people don’t feel confident in coming forward.” Mr Ruth said the incidents appear to be occurring late at night under cover of darkness. He said it is vital all incidents are reported to police, to help raise awareness of and prevent homophobic violence. Footscray police inspector Adrian Healy said police are aware of reports and have increased foot patrols of the area by LGBTI liaison officers. “Our message is to encourage reporting. This can be anonymous, if people prefer,” he said. “It’s incumbent on anyone who has experienced

Maribyrnong crime rises By Benjamin Millar A spike in robbery and theft offences has driven crime in Maribyrnong to its highest level in five years. Crime Statistics Agency data for 2016, released last week, shows a 4.7 per cent rise in recorded offences compared to 2015 – up from 8677 to 9085 crimes. As Victoria recorded a 10.2 per cent rise in crime for the year, Hobsons Bay bucked the statewide trend with a 2.4 per cent drop to a five-year low of 6668. Maribyrnong recorded a 70 per cent surge in robbery as assaults and deception offences

both rose by 10 per cent. Accounting for 44 per cent of all crime, theft was up five per cent to its highest levels in four years. Drug use and possession climbed nine per cent, yet drug dealing and trafficking offences were down 39 per cent. Burglary offences fell eight per cent and sexual assaults fell 21 per cent. Footscray police Inspector Adrian Healy said opportunistic thefts remained a major driver of local crime. “We do find mobile phones are a very popular item for stealing, in a whole range of ways,” he said. Inspector Healy said there appeared to have

been a drop in the drug trade around central Footscray, contributing to a reduction in detections of dealing. In Hobsons Bay, there was a 14 per cent rise in stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour, a seven per cent climb in arson and a nine per cent rise in drug use and possession. Drops were recorded in sexual offences, robbery, property damage, deception and drug dealing and trafficking. Hobsons Bay Inspector Michelle Young said the overall decrease in crime and public order offences reflects police working closely with the community.

From tiny slopes, big hopes grow Seddon dancer Alice Dixon’s stage career is really on a roll. She is hopping on board this week’s world premiere of Tiny Slopes, by award-winning choreographer Nat Cursio, a tale of vulnerability and resilience inspired by Cursio’s decision in her early forties that it was time to learn to skateboard. Dixon said it has been a daunting but rewarding experience to hop on a skateboard and learn a new skill. “I had never skateboarded before, so it was a genuine challenge,” she said. “It took us a while getting up our confidence, but I really enjoy working with Nat.” Tiny Slopes is about taking risks, failures and little wins, as audiences watch accomplished dancers trying to negotiate the free-wheeling world of skateboarding. As a dancer, Dixon found the dangers and potential for injury quite daunting. “Our bodies are our careers.” But she has been inspired by the four skate-savvy teens who joined the performance, including Footscray 13-year-old Pixel Willison-Allen. Tiny Slopes will be performed at the Meat Market, 36 Courtney Street, North Melbourne, 7pm nightly until March 25. Tickets $25-35. Bookings: artshouse.com.au or 9322 3713 Benjamin Millar

Report calls for more power to WorkSafe It’s too late to turn back the clock on residential developments already approved close to dangerous petrochemical plants, but a report commissioned by the state government could stop a repeat of such mistakes. A review of planning regulations for neighbourhoods near major hazard facilities (MHF) – such as oil refineries – has been submitted to Planning Minister Richard Wynne. The MHF advisory committee review makes a number of recommendations, including giving greater decision-making power to WorkSafe Victoria. Save Williamstown spokeswoman Charmian Gaud said if the review had come earlier, high-density high-rise development on the Port Phillip Woollen Mill site – 250 metres from Mobil’s Point Gellibrand tank farm – would not have been allowed by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). “They can’t overturn previous Point Gellibrand VCAT decisions with these recommendations, but there is still 60 per cent of the Port Phillip woollen mill site which does not have planning approval,” she said. “At last, council and VCAT will have to take notice of specific planning regulations near MHFs and what Worksafe says. “As we know, when VCAT approved the high rise [on the mill site] near Cecil Street, it was against the WorkSafe recommendation. “Hopefully, this state of affairs will never ever happen again,” she said. The review states that problems and challenges relating to the mill site had “greatly assisted the committee in coming to its conclusions”. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan, who made a pre-election promise to tighten planning regulations around MHFs, said both residents and operators had highlighted the need for improvements. “We need to give planning certainty to residents and operators, to ensure buffers are maintained, and safety remains the highest consideration in decision-making,” he said. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said there was currently little direction in planning schemes to guide planning and developments around MHFs. “This is a big issue for our community because we have eight of Victoria’s 40 registered MHFs within our municipality,” she said. RSL dawn service a call to arms By Goya Dmytryshchak People are being urged to show their support for Williamstown RSL by turning up in record numbers for the Anzac Day dawn service. Star Weekly revealed last week that the dawn service was in doubt after Williamstown RSL was put in to voluntary administration, tying up its funds and leaving creditors owed about $1.4 million. However, following queries from Star Weekly, RSL Victoria provided assurances Weekly that the sub-branch would be covered by insurance, and could apply to administrators

Rodgers Reidy for patriotic funds. RSL state secretary Michael Annett said Anzac House was committed to ensuring Williamstown has the opportunity to mark Anzac Day. “You can do an awful lot in terms of a commemorative occasion without necessarily spending a lot of money, but if there is financial support required, there is still the ability for the sub-branch committee to access patriotic funds – welfare funds,” he said. “If a dawn service has been a long-standing feature of the Williamstown community’s observance of Anzac Day, and if the Williamstown RSL sub-branch committee

– which is still in place – if they have the wherewithal to put together that occasion, then yes, of course we support it. “We do hope that the Williamstown community will still have an opportunity to mark appropriately … Anzac Day this year.” Williamstown RSL sub-branch president Rob Rowe said he was asking interested members of the community to start gathering at Williamstown’s cenotaph at 5.30am for a 6am service on Anzac Day. “We are currently working with the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club to be able to use their facilities after the service,” he said.

“My committee and I are extremely pleased with the community support we are receiving to ensure we have a march and dawn service. “It is indeed heartening to be a member of such a giving and caring community.” Williamstown MP Wade Noonan urged the community to show its support for the Williamstown RSL. “I’ve got to hand it to our local RSL,” he said. “Despite the challenges, they’re determined to conduct a dawn service on Anzac Day. “The best way for the community to demonstrate their support is to turn out to the Anzac services in record numbers.”

Doggie doyen honoured (Damjan Janevski)

By Benjamin Millar As the Western Bulldogs, defending AFL premiers, count down to Friday night’s season opener against Collingwood, an instrumental figure in the club’s history is being celebrated for her tireless work in the west. Former Bulldogs vice-president Susan Alberti is one of 10 women featured in the Her Place: Women in the West exhibition in Footscray. “I’m very honoured to be a part of this – my heart has always been in the west of Melbourne,” she said.

The joy in their faces, it was breathtaking on the - Susan Alberti day

’’

Alberti is still riding high over the drought-breaking 2016 grand final win against Sydney – a day she says she will never forget. The victory was such a long timing coming it took Alberti some time to register the significance of the win. “The enormity didn’t really hit me until we had won, until about a month after the grand final,” she said. “All the older people who I’ve seen weather the storm, I’ve seen them grow old and dream and wish – it was for them. “The joy on their faces, it was breathtaking on the day of the grand final. I will live with that for the rest of my life.” Following the premiership win, Alberti stepped down as vice-president of the club she has cherished for more than 60 years. Her remarkable energy has been focused on her role as the inaugural ambassador

for the AFL’s eight-team national women’s competition, which will hold its grand final, between Brisbane and Adelaide, this Saturday. “I never would have thought I would have seen this evolution in my lifetime,” she said. “I’m so proud of the women – they’re the most wonderful young women.

“Whilst red, white and blue will run through my veins for the rest of my life, my job now is to look after women playing football, nurture them, encourage them.” Her Place: Women in the West will be at the VU at MetroWest Gallery until March 31. Further details: herplacemuseum.com

As long-suffering Western Bulldogs fans approached their seventh decade of heartache, a puzzling question niggled away at Kerrie Soraghan. Why did they do it? Raised by one-eyed Dogs supporters just a stone’s throw from Whitten Oval, Soraghan had an inkling it was the off-field connections fans shared that made up for on-field disappointments. In 2013, she started blogging as Bulldog Tragician, reflecting on these and other questions. Then, last year, the almost unthinkable happened – the Bulldogs won their first Premiership since 1954. Soraghan’s account of the club’s journey from “daydream believers to premiership heroes” features in a new book, The Mighty West. “We have had our hearts broken so many times, but I just felt we had to strap ourselves in and enjoy the ride,” she said. The Mighty West will be out via Nero Books on April 3. It will be launched on Wednesday, March 29 from 6pm at the Railway Hotel, Yarraville. Benjamin Millar

Top offering in Newport

Two remanded after Yarraville carpark brawl

A 22-bedroom Newport property is expected to set a new price record for the suburb. Newport’s oldest building, at 481 Melbourne Road, is currently used as Williamstown Junction Guest House and Lodge. Nicholas Scott Real Estate listing agent Erden Karakurt said it was being sold through expressions of interest with offers above $3 million considered. He said the property, sitting on 1606 square metres and with two street frontages, was predicted to top the suburb’s property price record of $3.6 million. The property comprises an original three-bedroom bluestone house at the front. Built in 1875, it is listed in the Victorian Heritage Database as being of local historic and aesthetic significance. The property also features a self-contained two-bedroom apartment and 17 bedrooms at the rear. Mr Karakurt said the property could be reclaimed as a family home, could continue to operate as a business for up to 45 paying guests, or could be subdivided at the rear for townhouses with their own street frontages. “A lot of investors are wanting this sort of property where it’s open for development, open for land banking, open for rental, open for business,” he said. “The main people that are inquiring are interstate buyers, local developers and mostly from the eastern suburbs. “Newport is still very undervalued for what it is, so I think a lot of the people from the other suburbs are wanting this massive opportunity to have a period home.” The property last sold in 2000 for $650,000.

A 22-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, who allegedly drove over a friend’s head and shoulders after a brawl at Yarraville, has been denied bail. Magistrate Robert Kumar described the charges against Ben Cook as “very serious”. Cook appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday night charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, and reckless conduct endangering life, among other charges. The charges arise from a brawl that erupted outside a Yarraville pub about 1.30am that morning. The court heard that Cook and his co-accused, Jack Harris, 21, also from Hoppers Crossing, had been celebrating a friend’s 21st birthday at a hotel when a fight broke out. Security evicted the men to the carpark, where a series of fights ensued. CCTV footage appeared to show a vehicle, allegedly driven by Cook, drive over a man lying on the ground, before speeding off. The man was rushed to the Royal Melbourne hospital in a critical condition – his condition has since been upgraded to stable. Cook and Harris fled the scene and were later arrested by police. Both men were remanded in custody to reappear in court today (March 22). Alexandra Laskie

Frustrated cyclists are pushing for more spending on safer infrastructure in the wake of the tragic death of Arzu Baglar. Ms Baglar, 36, died after being hit by a truck while cycling in Yarraville on March 10. Maribyrnong Bicycle User Group members staged a ‘local black spot ride’ on Sunday to collate a list of trouble spots and gaps in local bike infrastructure. Greens MP Colleen Hartland is backing calls for a massive boost in funding for safe bike routes in the west. “It’s an absolute tragedy that a young mother lost her life while riding her bike. But this is not a freak accident – we knew this would happen sooner or later,” she said. Ms Hartland will use Parliament to press Roads Minister Luke Donnellan to increase funding. But Mr Donnellan said the state government is already improving cycling and pedestrian infrastructure in the west, through major projects including the Shepherd Bridge upgrade and Western Distributor. He said a new separated path is being built across the Maribyrnong River, while the Western Distributor design separates cycling paths from roads and completes the Federation Trail. Maribyrnong council has put aside $4.6 million for footpaths and cycle ways, including a $175,000 bicycle network upgrade and $350,000 to extend the Maribyrnong River Trail, this year.

A father has been praised by firefighters after rescuing his son in a dramatic house fire in Spotswood early Thursday morning. The Hudsons Road home became engulfed in flames about 3.30am when a fire broke out in the air-conditioning unit in the roof of the property. Two children were asleep on the second storey of the home when the blaze broke out. MFB Laverton North station officer Rod O’Sullivan said the mother had been woken by sounds of the fire. When she investigated, the second floor was engulfed in flames. One child woke up and made their way downstairs, but when the second child couldn’t be stirred, the father went upstairs to rescue him. The man suffered burns to his feet while saving his son, which Mr O’Sullivan hailed as a “pretty good effort”. “Our priority would be to rescue lives, and he’s got his son out, so it allows us to focus on the fire. It means we were able to contain the fire to the second floor.” Four trucks and 20 firefighters were called to the scene, which was reported by the police air wing and a neighbour. Mr O’Sullivan said most roof fires were caused by air-conditioning units. “It’s a lot of factors, but being up in the roof, they tend to be a major cause of house fires,” he said. “The bearings seize up in them and no-one notices because it’s out of sight and out of mind – so it’s in the middle of the night that these things can happen.” Reports that the family’s smoke detectors weren’t working were unconfirmed. Mr O’Sullivan said the fire was so intense the property’s roof may have collapsed before a smoke alarm would have even detected the blaze.

True grit brings out best By Goya Dmytryshchak The Laverton Youth Boxing Gym is changing lives – boxer Anthony Buttigieg started training there 13 years ago; this month he won the Commonwealth super welterweight title against Queenslander Rocky Jerkic. Buttigieg, 28, from Altona Meadows, said he now hopes to become a world champion. “Hopefully, I can head down the right track and just keep winning and possibly defend that Commonwealth title and, hopefully, it will lead to bigger fights and possibly a world title,” he said. “I’d be the first world champion from Hobsons Bay, I guess.” Laverton Community Integrated Services (LCIS) runs the gym on the smell of an oily rag, at Laverton Guides hall in Railway Avenue, under registered trainer Sammy de Moor. LCIS chief executive Michael Pernar said he found a venue for the gym after learning that de Moor was training kids in a carpark after being forced out of a building because of asbestos. Mr Pernar said Buttigieg was a prime example of what could be achieved with determination. “Now he’s gotten to the point where he’s a professional and, one day, he’s the type of person who’ll be able to talk to young people so they can see just how much his life’s changed,” Mr Pernar said. “It’s really been a community effort to keep it running; it’s not just an outlet to keep young people out of trouble. “Through boxing they learn discipline, they learn respect, they learn self respect, they learn how to eat properly … it’s an art.” De Moor, also from Altona Meadows, said Buttigieg shows what kids from the west can achieve. “This was his 13th fight [as a professional] and he hasn’t been beaten,” de Moor said.

Pavilion gets a makeover Works start next month on the $1.5 million revamp of Altona’s JK Grant Reserve pavilion to build in proper change rooms for females. Hobsons Bay council has awarded the tender to Loaram Constructions, whose past projects include the Melbourne City Football Club training facility at La Trobe University and the Maidstone Tennis Pavilion. The pavilion at JK Grant Reserve is used by Altona Football Club, Altona Junior Football Club, Altona Cricket Club and the Altona Auskick Centre. Mayor Sandra Wilson said the pavilion had not been substantially renovated since it was built in the 1960s. “Happily, women’s participation in sport is well and truly on the rise with the AFLW … these upgrades will now provide the change rooms and facilities needed to accommodate the new demand from women and girls,” she said. Hobsons Bay council contributed $1.3 million, with the state government contributing $100,000, AFL Victoria $25,000 and tenant clubs $40,000. Cr Tony Briffa said the project was part of an Altona sports precinct master plan. “I hope to see other facilities in the precinct upgraded to join the significant work already undertaken.” Works are due to be completed by October, in time for Altona Football Club’s 100th anniversary celebrations in 2018.

Fishing mates saved on the bay By Goya Dmytryshchak Two fishermen have been rescued by Water Police after their boat began to sink off Altona. Senior Sergeant Scott Dower, of Williamstown Water Police, said the two mates from Taylors Lakes were about 10 kilometres from Altona boat ramp when they put out a distress call about 2.45am Thursday last week. They had launched their 4.5-metre boat

during calm conditions, but during the night, the wind increased to 20 knots. Their boat began to take on water after waves rose up to 1.5 metres. “The police helicopter, plus one of our Water Police vessels from here, has gone out to where they were,” Senior Sergeant Dower said. “With the conditions during the rescue, both guys on the boat have gone into the water and subsequently been dragged on board the police boat, brought back to

In step with baby boom Sunshine Hospital occupational therapist Leanne Reynolds is counting down the days until the Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital is completed late next year. Ms Reynolds works in the children’s allied health service department, which has a waiting list of almost a year for its services. “We’re in one of the fastest growing corridors in the country … the number of babies rises every year,” she said. So for the past four years she’s rounded up family members – including her parents, siblings and their children – to walk Western Health Foundation’s WalkWest event at Footscray Park to help raise funds for the new hospital, which is being built at Sunshine. The annual fundraising event comprises a two-kilometre, five-kilometre and a 10-kilometre walk or run along the Maribyrnong River. Work began on the new hospital in October last year.

When completed, the hospital will provide 20 new maternity delivery rooms, 39 special care nursery cots, four operating theatres and space for additional clinics. WalkWest will be held on Sunday, March 26, at Footscray Park. Entry costs $20 for adults. Children aged 16 and under can walk/run for free. Register online at www.walkwest.com.au. Alexandra Laskie

BMW takes prestige driving into the future

A sign of friendship Friends of Skeleton Creek is urging people to check out new interpretive signs, providing information about the area’s nature, recently installed along the waterway in Hobsons Bay. The nine signs, from west of the Point Cook Road bridge at Seabrook to the Point Cook footbridge in Cheetham Wetlands, were funded by a Hobsons Bay council environment grant of more than $25,000. Formed in 1991, the Friends group protects and restores the creek environment, and also acts as a watchdog for water quality. Secretary Denice Perryman said the creek was “pretty special” as it ran from Port Phillip Bay through Cheetham Wetlands, which is internationally-recognised under the Ramsar

convention and known to support more than 200 bird species. “About two years ago, we discovered that there was quite a lot of signage along Skeleton Creek in the Wyndham area but almost nothing in Hobsons Bay and so we thought that we would like to remedy that,” she said. The Friends group holds regular activities in Hobsons Bay and Wyndham, with a mulch-spreading day planned for Hoppers Crossing on March 26 and sign rejuvenation and shrub planting at Seabrook on April 11. The seventh-generation BMW 5 series launched this month is the prestige marque’s most technology-rich release ever. BMW Australia chief executive officer Marc Werner describes the BMW 5 Series Sedan as a showcase of the latest automotive technologies. “It incorporates advanced semi-autonomous capabilities, driving assistants and ground-breaking connectivity while remaining dynamic and engaging to drive,” he says. “With the expansion of our model portfolio in the large vehicle classes, we are satisfying the wishes of many customers. “I’m in no doubt that the new BMW 5 Series will set new benchmarks technologically, but also have huge emotional appeal. “It remains the epitome of the business sedan.” Advanced algorithms monitor and calculate weather conditions and adjusting for mileage, time elapsed since last service, fuel consumption and how a vehicle is being driven. Information logged in an internal computer system is displayed on a super-sized screen, showing the car’s maintenance requirements. Mr Werner says a distinct focus on technology, including driver-assisted technology, is a reality of car design moving into the future. As such, the company made it a priority of the new BMW 5 series design ethos. BMW Melbourne managing director Geoff Briscoe says the technologically-driven design of the new 5 series is a prime example of evolution.

“The all-new BMW 5 Series is a significant car in BMW’s history,” he says. “An impressive six generations have created a continued success story since its inception in 1972. “The seventh-generation BMW 5 Series Sedan is a key model in the BMW range, which will be available at BMW Melbourne from 18 March, 2017. “Book your test drive to experience it today.” BMW Melbourne, 209 Kings Way South Melbourne. MY PLACE Altona’s James Henderson’s art is heavily influenced by his Finnish background. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I’m the sixth generation of my family to live in Hobsons Bay. I think Altona is a little bit like Hanko, down south of Finland. My family came in 1906 – the Finnish side of the family. I volunteer with the Finnish Society of Melbourne [based in Altona], the Friendly Visiting service for the elderly Finns in and around Melbourne. I help out with Louis Joel [Arts and Community Centre] … I just help whenever I can around the place. What do you love about Altona? Location. It’s got everything. Where I live in particular, it’s right opposite the park, the beach, close to the trains, library. Everything’s in walking distance, it’s great. What would you change?

(Damjan Janevski)

I don’t think there’s anything I don’t like. What’s your favourite cafe or eatery? Norfolk, because they put a lot of effort into their food and it’s a reasonable price, friendly staff and in a great area. Why is this an important year for the local Finnish community?

CO CO NST M RU M C EN TI CE ON D

Finland turns 100-years-old – it’s 100 years of independence. This year, the Finnish Society in Melbourne is having gala dinners and many parties and activities. We’ve got the Easter Games, which gets selected to different states each year – it’s like a mini Olympics for Finnish games – and they’re going to be in Altona.

You’re an artist who has been in the Army Reserves, the CFA and done so much volunteering. You seem so busy … I have a very big bucket list. In 2008, I was diagnosed with cancer and that quickly turned into stage four, so I was lucky to finish high school. Since then, I took two gap years as a break and I wasn’t doing anything, so I took up firefighting

… in the CFA up in Harcourt. I’ve just been doing random things since. I’ve even done fencing, line dancing, martial arts, sailing … and I’ve still got a big bucket list. Can you tell me about your art subject matter? I grew up with mum almost every week telling me, ‘Oh, we come from Finland, it’s a cold

country and it’s dark and it’s like Russia, kind of’. And I just imagined this total dark wintry snowy place with onion domes everywhere. As I’ve gotten older I’ve been aiming to go, [but] uni and all that’s happened and I’ve never quite got the opportunity. So, my animation was for the Scandinavian Art Show a few years ago and it’s titled something in Finnish which translates as ‘One Day’.

Now it’s Footscray’s Charlies and Bellas and Maxes and Rubies of the doggy kind who get the attention of animal/pet trainer and behaviour specialist David McKelson. Before David opened Pro Dog Daycare last year, he worked for 17 years with all kinds of exotic species at the zoo. The final eight of those years he was precinct manager of the Asian elephant section. He says his roles let him learn from worldwide experts about animal behaviour. David now uses that knowledge in a different – yet similar – direction. “My routine with the elephants was a focused, patient, incremental approach to training and I now apply that with dogs,” David says. “Working with the elephants was inspiring; I saw three successful elephant births from artificial insemination, which was received internationally as a significant achievement. Now I put the same commitment into the dogs we care for and train.” Following his zoo stint, David completed accreditation as a Certified Dog Trainer/ Behaviour Specialist and is a certified instructor. Team members at Pro Dog are also qualified dog trainers and, with David’s scientific credentials in animal behaviour adding significantly to the skill set, the doggy home-away-from-home is winning two-legged and four-legged fans alike. Let’s make youth safer on our roads Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham councils. The only cost for schools and clubs is a booking fee. F2D, a half-day workshop for year 11 students, focuses on the behaviour and responsibilities of all road users.

It’s why we want to get two great driver education programs into schools There are no scare tactics or direct, hands-on driving instruction, but participants hear real-life stories from police officers, fireys or other emergency services personnel. LAOM, an hour-long session for year 12 students, focuses on alcohol consumption and strategies to avoid drink-driving. A range of drink and drug driving issues are explored in a way relevant to young people. Mr Giddings believes secondary schools and sports groups that have already tapped into these programs should be congratulated. “They have taken up the challenge of participating and should be praised for their enduring and strong commitment to road safety in their local community,” he says. ccording to TAC statistics, a quarter of all car accident fatalities will involve a young person – most often a male – yet to reach their 25th birthday. It’s sad statistics such as this that serve as a call to action for Jim Giddings, chair of RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council. “Young drivers,” he says, “comprise a small proportion of licensed drivers yet are hugely over-represented in road crashes, fatalities and injuries. Immediately after obtaining their red probationary licence, they are at the greatest risk. “It’s why we want to get two great driver education programs into schools and in front of senior secondary students who will soon be getting their licences and on to the roads – when they are most vulnerable to accidents or poor road behaviour. “The two programs – Fit2Drive and Looking After Our Mates – are especially tailored to engage and educate young people, whether in schools, sporting clubs or other groups.” The Fit2Drive (F2D) and Looking After Our Mates (LAOM) programs incorporate the notion that young people have the capacity to change attitudes about risky driving. The programs encourage them to take ownership and responsibility for their own safety on the road – and that of their peers. Delivered in a school or club environment, the F2D and LAOM programs are VicRoads-owned and TAC-endorsed. They’re fully funded by RoadSafe Westgate, in association with Hobsons

A central focus for western families A

nchored by Coles and Aldi, Central West shopping centre is a hive of activity with 45 specialty stores and more than 800 free parking spaces helping make the single-level centre perfectly accessible. The centre maintains a consistent focus on family friendliness. A great example is the establishment of a fab new parent room with curtained-off areas for feeding bub. It’s so good that it’s been awarded a five-star rating from Australian Breastfeeding Association.

This playgroup has been shortlisted for a Victorian Early Years Award The bright space features a mural completed by well-known local artist Scottie Neoh (aka Bonsai), with help from Hannah Wilson who chose the helmeted honeyeater as the subject, in tribute to Victoria’s emblem. In the case of these beautiful birds, both parents feed their nestlings – something that makes for lovely symbolism. Another example of the family focus is the free playgroup held every Tuesday from 10am-noon during school terms. Run by MacKillop Family Services, it’s a time for parents and under-fives to make friends while enjoying interactive play activities. It also serves as a portal to community services, with Mackillop staff in attendance to answer questions and offer guidance. This is particularly helpful for newly arrived refugees and migrants, with their children

Dimmeys – still a towering icon E

veryone loves Dimmeys. The Melbourne cut-price chain is as iconic as the landmark Dimmeys building, and clock tower, in Richmond – even if the company no longer operates from within its walls. Such is the strength of the popular brand. These days, you’re more likely to bump into a Dimmeys outlet at your local shopping centre, reflecting the new direction for the cut-price chain. The flagship superstore in Braybrook is just one example. Despite their locations changing, the foundations of the business model remain the same – but they have been strengthened. The first Monday of every month, a new catalogue is printed with the bargains for the month – just as it’s always been with Dimmeys. Buyers for the chain are charged with scouring manufacturers for end-of-line and general bargains, so there is new stock every month in a diverse range that runs from knickers and knitwear to hair dye and handbags. Men’s business attire and suitcases were for sale at the time of writing, as were linen and long-shelf life foodstuffs. Braybrook store manager Louise Collins says the beloved chain and its employees are focused on abiding by the original philosophy of “give the customer a bargain”. “You’ll see top quality brand names for a lot less,” she says.

“If you see something you really like, buy it because it may not be there next time you shop. “Look out for our catalogues so that you can be informed of our amazing bargains before they are all gone.” Robyn Mitrevska, who works at the Braybrook store, has been with Dimmeys since 1976, when she started at the Footscray store aged 16.

Look out for our catalogues so that you can be informed of our amazing bargains Robyn says she loves what the brand stands for. “I love the customer interaction and the fact that Dimmeys genuinely tries to offer the best possible value for money,” she says. Store manager Louise says the Melbourne icon, which started its rich Australian history as a drapery business in 1898, is a unique shopping experience. “We pride ourselves on giving our customers bargains that cannot be matched by any other retailer,” she says. “Customers often ask us how we do it.” The Dimmeys Flagship Superstore Braybrook, shop D1A, Central West Shopping Centre, 67 Ashley Street, Braybrook. Pharmacy completes a healthy circle C

ircle Health Pharmacy has been open for just four months yet is already fitting right in with its professional neighbours who share the landmark Circle Health hub building on Blackshaws Road. Owner and principal pharmacist Larry Chan says his new pharmacy “completes the circle” by providing customer focus and top-notch service that support Circle Health hub’s dentistry, medical, physiotherapy, psychology and Melbourne Pathology services, as well as providing for customers in the wider community. “We’re the newest piece in the jigsaw, and aim to contribute to the Circle Health hub’s vibrant professional community where each of us is in the business of meeting our community’s health and wellbeing needs,” he says. “It’s great being under the same roof because it enhances our ability to work together toward a common purpose.” Larry has a special interest in the management of diabetes, asthma, eczema and allergies, and is happy to offer his expert knowledge and guidance to pharmacy visitors. “We carry out diabetes MedsChecks and free home medication reviews because we understand taking multiple medications can be a bit overwhelming,” he says. “We can identify any problems and pass on helpful information just through a friendly chat. We can also help by dispensing these medications into easy-to-use sealed blister packs, so our customers can spend less time worrying about their medication and more time getting on with life.

“And we keep patient scripts on file if they want – it saves losing them at home – and even send out SMS reminders when prescriptions are due to be refilled.” The reminders also come into play when a doctor visit is needed to get a new script – it couldn’t be easier. Larry says that not everyone knows or understands that medications affect different people differently.

It’s great being under the same roof … it enhances our ability to work together toward a common purpose “We can find out how our patients respond to medications by conducting a pharmacognetic myDNA test,” he says. “Then, if needed, we can work with the patient’s doctor to minimise adverse effects and improve their health through a co-tailored treatment plan.” Larry has pharmacy technicians Lorraine and Sonja on his team. They love helping people and are particularly interested in the beauty and cosmetic fields. Knowledge of vitamins and supplements, as well as weight management aids, is another strength they share. Expect to find here just about everything that a progressive pharmacy can offer in meeting family and individual healthcare needs, and the extended opening hours is just another way the team goes the extra mile to service the community. “We understand that people do not plan

Where the art of beauty goes outside I

an Lyell has always had an artistic bent and an itch to create beauty. But it wasn’t until 2002, as he sat in a quiet café in Florence after seeing a Leonardo da Vinci exhibition, that he was inspired to sketch designs for his first sculpture pieces. It wasn’t long before, in a studio of close friends, his two signature pieces, Cratere and Goccia, were realised – using Florentine terracotta. Later in the same year, Ian opened the first of four design studios in Melbourne and Sydney. The latest – in Spotswood – specialises in outdoor/garden pieces of striking beauty. At the gritty, industrial end of Hudsons Road in Spotswood, the studio is a showcase of Ian’s personal designs and exquisite bespoke pieces he sources from collaborative artisans in Europe, America and Asia. Ian’s younger days tell the story of why he’s uniquely qualified to help clients make good decisions about decorating their outdoor spaces. He studied horticulture straight from school, eventually scoring an Outstanding Apprentice of Victoria award. He later completed further studies in landscape design, earning concurrent roles of community lecturer and parks and gardens superintendent for the City of Brighton. He contributed articles to high-end Belle magazine. “My private passion for the arts also compelled me to devote several years to life drawing at Melbourne’s School of Art,” Ian says. “But it was when one of my original paintings was positively critiqued

by Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze in Florence that I finally made the decision to launch my first design studio.” The owners of contemporary homes and stylishly revamped period dwellings in the likes of Seddon, Yarraville, Williamstown and Footscray who are looking to enhance their urban-chic garden spaces will love Ian’s work.

Ian’s younger days tell the story of why he’s uniquely qualified to help clients make good decisions Carrara marble, granite, stainless-steel, Tuscan terracotta, wood … expect to see all these materials crafted into statement pieces. The range includes sculptures, garden furniture, pots, Oriental pieces and interior décor items. Also outdoor mirrors, water features, outdoor lamps, wall panels and garden tools can all be found at the studio. Ian also offers a consultation service. “People are welcome to book with us to discuss ideas about how to develop their indoor and outdoor spaces,” he says. “Once we establish a design brief, choices are carefully considered, taking into account client preferences. In the end, they can get a fabulous lifestyle space.” Mention this story for a 10 per cent discount on your purchase. Ian Lyell Design, 4/59-61 Hudsons Road, Spotswood. Life just gets better with help at hand A

marco Apartments at Kingsville brings David Menzies closer to his two great loves – his wife, Sharan, and his beloved Western Bulldogs footy team. Just two years since moving in, David describes life at Amarco as “extremely happy”. “When my wife got sick and needed long-term care, we moved from Inverloch back to Melbourne, so she could get the care she required, and to be closer to the kids,” he says. David and his family looked at several places and eventually settled on the Uniting AgeWell Kingsville Community. “It’s perfect,” he says. “Sharan gets all the care she needs in the residential facility, and I have my own first-floor apartment literally next door. “We still see each other every day, and I can pop in at the drop of a hat.” David says his apartment also has a spare room and nice balcony, providing ample space for when their children and grandchildren visit. Amarco’s yearly calendar of special events also enabled West Footscray-born David to celebrate his second love – the Western Bulldogs. David remembers the Doggies’ premiership in 1954, and was ecstatic when they took out the flag for just the second time last year. “I’ve always been a Doggies’ supporter,” David says. “Even after living in the eastern suburbs for more than 50 years, then retiring to the country, they’re still my team. Residents got to meet club legend Libba [Tony Liberatore] and mascot Barkly and

see the premiership cup at two special Amarco events last year. “There’s always something happening here, and I help out wherever I can.” David was also thrilled to be able to hold the Melbourne Cup during its visit to Amarco in October last year.

David says life at Amarco is ‘extremely happy’ More social activities are planned this year, including chocolate making and decorating activities for Easter with Uniting AgeWell’s talented hotel services manager, Carlo Napoli. This happens at 10am-noon on Tuesday, April 11. Uniting AgeWell’s Amarco Apartments have been designed so residents can enjoy retirement without the burden of maintaining a house. It offers secure, private apartments, a concierge service, 24/7 emergency support, in-house café and reduced utility bills. An in-house wellness centre, library, business centre, lounge facilities and a community bus are other Amarco assets valued by residents. One or two bedroom apartments start from $350,000. A deep passion for social service W

illiam Kelly, manager of Gateway Community Services, expects lots of growth and changes in the disability and aged-care sectors in coming years. But for now, he and his dynamic team focus on their main purpose – one agreed upon from the beginning. “Gateway exists to improve the health and wellbeing of people in our community,” William says. “We promote social inclusion, and offer healthy lifestyle and educational programs directed towards meeting diverse needs. “I believe Gateway genuinely makes a difference in people’s lives every day. Our programs truly enrich and empower our members, helping them maintain independence, reduce social isolation and improve physical and mental health.” Gateway began in 1994 as a volunteer-based organisation and grew quickly by meeting grassroots community needs. It went on to gain some government funding, which enabled the eventual widening of the organisation’s reach across Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong and Wyndham. Volunteers remain the lifeblood of Gateway and William says they’re looking for more, with numerous exciting volunteer roles currently available. William encourages anyone who is interested in finding out more about the volunteer roles to contact coordinator of volunteers, Fatima, on 9399 3511.

“We have a wonderful team of both paid staff and volunteers that work closely together to deliver amazing programs,” William says. “They’re skilled, engaged and share a passion for community health and wellbeing.” The next volunteer information session will be on Tuesday, April 4. Gateway is also hoping to raise $30,000-plus through an Emergency Food Relief fundraising Dinner at Yarraville Club on the evening of Friday, May 5 – see details below or visit the website for more details.

It provides disability services, a support for carers program and community transport, and runs fantastic social and lifestyle activities each weekday. Everyman’s suit maker fits next gens

There’s nothing like coming in for a professional fitting … and feeling and seeing the fabrics Setting up in a warehouse in Williamstown North, Matthew planned to sell his Fletcher Jones garments online. “Our online store is great for busy customers, who might know the brand well and want to have garments delivered to their home … we do lots of that. And we’re planning to expand much further in that direction. “Our online customer service team is happy to answer all questions to make the online experience an easy one – they’ll even put an order through for the customer, should there be an issue.” However, customers are also welcome to visit the Williamstown North warehouse if they prefer to have a look around.

Matthew also has a store in Ashburton, and a city store in Collins Street opens next month. “We have customers who’ve been buying Fletcher Jones garments for decades – and they know there’s nothing like coming in for a Fletcher Jones professional fitting and feeling and seeing the fabrics,” Matthew says. “That’s why physical shop spaces work – even younger generations find this. At Fletcher Jones Warehouse Outlet – with fitters on hand – find suits, men’s business and casual trousers and shirts, jeans, shorts, polos, jackets, knitwear and accessories, as well as a selection of women’s garments. Made-to-order suits, trousers, vests and shirts are a specialty. “Your wedding is at least one occasion in life when a bespoke suit is perfect,” Matthew says. “Men can choose their own fabric or special design, or just have a perfectly fitted suit made for them. They’ll look sharp and feel very comfortable.” Matthew sees more ahead. He wants to open more stores across Victoria – while still growing online – for customers who’ve loved the brand for years, while introducing younger people to genuine quality. Price: $1 million – $1.1 million

Reserve price: $1.05 million

It is a perfect double-fronted Victorian, the essence of downtown Kingsville. Renovated with nothing left to do, it has beautiful, well proportioned spaces and three full-sized bedrooms. Extended to capitalise on every square inch of land, the result is the perfect family home. Behind a hardwood picket fence, the facade features restored sash windows and a freshly decked front porch. Enter the hall; two large bedrooms are either side. To the left is the master with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. A third bedroom follows, with the first of two living areas to the right. The main bathroom has a European laundry. The extension features a pristine white kitchen with stone benchtops, Fisher & Paykel and Bosch appliances. A second living zone with a bay window upholds the period allure. A large backyard, ducted heating, evaporative cooling and attic space complete the picture.

This beautifully presented townhouse is on a corner block and has high, quality fencing and manicured private garden nooks. It’s in a great part of town with shops, cafes, train station, The Strand waterfront, parks and schools just a short stroll away. Downstairs, the open-plan layout offers spacious areas for dining, or spreading out, with room to spare. Full length glass sliders here let the outside in. The stylish hardwood kitchen has stone benchtops and loads of natural light. There is a bedroom downstairs, useful for guests, as a theatre room, playroom or retreat. There’s a powder room opposite and a big laundry behind the kitchen. At the top of the stairs, there is a big bathroom flanked by two more bedrooms, one of which has a huge walk-in wardrobe and en suite. There is access to the double carport at the rear. No body corporate fees here.

This classic cottage has been revamped by a builder-developer team. Originally a worker’s cottage, it was stripped it back to its frame and re-built to exacting standards. Two bedrooms flank the entry hall, with its corbelled arch and beautiful polished floors (throughout). The main bedroom at right has a floating wall entry to its walk-in wardrobe, leading to the bathroom. Dual entries mean this serves as both en suite and main bathroom, with a glass double shower and matt black waterfall shower head and taps, and a stunning vanity. A third bedroom/office is opposite with an original sash window. The open-plan living-dining area features a high-gloss black kitchen with integrated dishwasher and fridge/freezer. Sliding timber doors open to a lawned backyard. A five-minute stroll to Douglas Parade, 10 to the bay … what’s not to like?

On a corner block, the dual street frontages make for multiple opportunities for this property. As is, it has three bedrooms, a living area and a huge kitchen with quality tiling throughout the kitchen and dining areas. It also has purpose-built sheds in the backyard built around a large raised garden bed. There’s an external laundry here, while side gates give access to undercover parking. Revive this property to its former glory or re-develop (STCA). It’s in a convenient location just around the corner from Footscray Central, Footscray Park and Victoria University. It is a property that would suit a renovator or developer equally.

This historic landmark property sits regally on a huge corner block (more than 1300 square metres) in the dress circle of Williamstown. It is a property of significance by any standard. This Victorian era complex boasts multiple living spaces, soaring 3.4 metre ceilings, a massive fire place with wood store, and traditional alfresco dining spaces set amid beautifully landscaped gardens. The original house was built in 1885. Original lacework, date-stamped as such, still adorns the wide, return verandah. A huge palm tree, planted when the

foundations were set, features in the front garden, as was the custom with these mansions. Three sets of french doors open out onto the garden from the formal sitting room and formal dining room, where twin gas fireplaces have been installed. Throughout the property, 400mm-wide cornicing and 22mm-wide architraves add to the wow factor. In the family lounge room, you’ll find a custom-built bar and a fireplace. Two of three original downstairs bedrooms were converted into a main

bedroom during a 1990s renovation, featuring built-in wardrobes and a two-way en suite. A second bedroom is still next door. The downlit kitchen is spacious, with granite benchtops, a Glen Gas 900mm oven, two-door dishwasher and walk-in pantry. Upstairs, there is a dedicated study and a rumpus room with custom cabinetry (currently used as a library) overlooking the garden from a balcony. Three further bedrooms are found here, with a separate bathroom and powder room. There are

sash windows throughout the second-storey extension. The property has carefully and seamlessly been redeveloped by the owners – an engineer and an historian, who bought it in 1989. The double garage has hardwood stable-style doors that open to a return driveway and to a grassed area at the rear. This is a property where a lifetime can be enjoyed and shared with loved ones. It is the personification of the Williamstown dream, A once in a lifetime opportunity.

If houses could talk, this interesting and inviting Newport charmer would say “Welcome home”. Benefiting from both previous and recent renovations, the entire home exudes a wonderful feeling of tranquility and warmth. The alluring appeal of the deeply coloured facade, set behind an interesting, landscaped native garden, invites the admiring eye and sparks interest. Easy, relaxed living is the theme across three living zones and out to the undercover entertaining area on a nice big plot of land with right of way rear access to the double garage, half of which has been converted to a creative studio. We also love the new ensuite, pure wool carpets, plantation shutters throughout, high ceilings, ducted heating, split system cooling and low maintenance rendered exterior. f you’ve always wanted a WRX but you’ve never wanted to look like an adult masquerading as an 18-year-old, this is the car for you. There’s more room in the back seat too, and you’ll get a couple of suitcases behind that. But the family might not thank you for buying it. This is a very quick car with heaps of performance for the price. Once the turbo is spinning, the motor is responsive and fast, and it’s beautifully matched to a continuous variable gearbox with eight presets. Give it some gas and it sounds great too. And there’s handling to match; it sits square and solid through the bends with no shudder or skip. The cost is a hard and sharp ride. Officially this is Bilstein suspension, but your family will come up with other names when you encounter any road that’s not freeway smooth. The solution? The cheapest Levorg, the GT at $47,294, gets the same engine but softer springs. But if you’re into sporty driving, you won’t find anything at the price to touch the GTS.

ROD’S VERDICT

V

was aware of the hard ride right up until I got into the driver’s seat and then, wow, you realise why. The handling is terrific. It sticks like glue and feels solid throughout. And the seating is nicely comfortable and excellently supportive to hold you firmly, no matter how high the cornering G-forces rise. There’s instant acceleration and power delivery that, while quite linear, comes on with a whoosh. There’s something compelling about having instant power, and bags of it. It put a smile on my face. The GTS brings leather seating as well as the navigation, sunroof and the EyeSight safety package, which includes blind spot warning and a rear cross-traffic alert among other things. The interior is well finished and nicely trimmed. There’s wood detail and red upholstery stitching throughout. Rear seats fold quickly and easily to give a flat cargo floor. OK, so maybe the ride is hard and there’s noticeable cabin noise, especially over rough surfaces, but in the end this is a practical wagon that drives like a sports car. Good fun.

IN THE DOGHOUSE

By Lance Jenkinson

■ Footy

is back and what a weird experience it is going to be for Bulldogs fans, especially those under the age of 62. The current red, white and blue army has never experienced being reigning premiers before. Every time I hear it on the radio or television I think they are talking about Hawthorn or Geelong, so conditioned am I to not being premiers. That is not to say the title does not sit well, because it does, and I know all Bulldogs fans could get very accustomed to it. Cocky is not the nature of Bulldogs fans so that is not an issue, but they can be excused for some early season swagger, and who better to unleash it upon than Magpies fans this Friday night. Peter Gordon took possession of the premiership flag last week and the Bulldogs faithful will savour the unfurling at Etihad Stadium next week when the Doggies meet the Swans. At least I hope that is the agenda. We have never been here before in my lifetime. This is all new territory.

■ One

group that is blossoming at the Bulldogs is the past players and officials and it is not as a result of the premiership. Former player Ross Abbey has done a terrific job revitalising the group and attracting many old faces back to the club. Most players don’t leave VFL/AFL clubs when they want to, or on their terms, that is just a fact of footy life. This has always made the job of reconnecting the players with the club a difficult challenge. The recent annual general meeting of the group saw a number of new names stand up for the committee. Phil O’Keeffe is now vice president and new committee men include Adam Contessa, Andrew Howlett, Gary McGorlick and Graeme Joslin. They join Ross, Owen Madigan, Ian Foreman, Jack Slattery, Ron McGowan and Les Bartlett as the officers of the group. Any past player or official is most welcome. I am looking forward to another great year as the MC for the Past Players and Players sponsors room for home games at Etihad.

■ Funny

game cricket, though not all that amusing for the Williamstown first X1 knocked out of the finals by Altona last weekend in a low scoring game at Point Gellibrand. Many, including me, thought the Willy boys were on their way to another VSDCA flag. Well done to Altona and good luck in the grand final. Epic double century puts Seddon on top

Ben Speake was unbreakable with 204 not out for Seddon. (Dennis Manktelow)

Seddon opening batsman Ben Speake has produced an innings for the ages in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north-west grand final. Speake batted for the whole two days, was at the crease for 160 overs and compiled a remarkable 204 not out to put the Dockers in the box seat with 6-374 against a shell-shocked Sunshine United at Laverton Park. Speake’s temperament was patient, but there were moments of indulgence – 23 fours, a six and two bat raises to the pavilion being the highlights of the knock so far. The former Doutta Stars player showed his ability with a century in his third start for Seddon, but his form had been patchy leading into the grand final. Speake left his best until last, producing an innings that will be enshrined in Seddon lore, particularly if his side can wrap up victory,

which it is hot favourite to do with two days to go. Speake’s massive contribution was joined by contributions from Duleeka Thisakuttige (63) and captain John Taylor (56), who were crucial in allowing Speake to bloom. In the north-west B1 grand final, West Newport will chase an outright result after losing on first innings to Royal Park-Brunswick at the Western Oval. Wests could only muster 175 in the first innings and the Royals are 7-187, a lead of 12. In west A1, Williamstown Imperials have a fight on their hands in their grand final bout with Seabrook at Saltwater Reserve. The Imperials are 4-77 in reply to Seabrook’s 231.

Altona has ripped up the form guide to advance to its first Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association grand final since 2008-09. The A’s turned it on when it mattered, downing minor premier Williamstown by two wickets in an edge-of-your-seat east-west first XI semi-final at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. It came just a week after the A’s survived the qualifying final phase as the highest-ranked losing side. Altona restricted Williamstown to 157 on day one. The A’s built pressure with tight bowling and claimed wickets at regular intervals. Shannon Clarke showed the Seagulls why he was the second leading wicket-taker in the competition with 4-26 off 22.1 overs. David Kinsella’s hot form with the ball continued with 4-36 off 10, while A’s captain Adam Yates chimed in with 2-25 off 15. “It was a nail-biting finish – for us to come away with that win was fantastic,” Yates said. “The pitch was very flat, so we were thinking restricting them anywhere under 200 would be a great effort. “Our bowlers toiled really hard all day and did a fantastic job after they were 3-95 at one stage.” In any other situation, Altona would have no sweat chasing down 158 for victory. But the opportunity to go through to a grand final for the first time in eight years and a chance to play-off for a first premiership since 1996-97, played on the minds of the A’s players. At 6-77, things were looking grim for Altona, after Greg Sheehan (38) was the only top-order batsman to fire. In the middle order, Adam Brown offered a spark with 10 and Stefan Sidari did likewise with 12. Both had small but promising partnerships with Sean Hollins (36no). Still, at 8-133, the A’s were up against it. Then came one of the most important 26-run stands in Altona’s history – between Hollins and Clarke (18no), who guided the A’s to victory. Clarke hit the winning runs with a shot to backward square leg, sparking major celebrations for the A’s. “The calmness of the two guys at the crease at the end was fantastic,” Yates said. “That’s what finals cricket is about – being able to withstand that pressure.” Altona has set up a mouth-watering grand final with Balwyn at Gordon Barnard Reserve this weekend, with the A’s as underdogs. “We’ll have to be at our best to beat them,” Yates said.

Import brings triple treat

Basketball

Altona Gators came up short 80-68 in their Big V men’s division 2 season opener against Mildura Heat at the Toyota Hothouse on Saturday night. Jeremy Edwards, who had 15 points, including two threes, and Justin Eckhardt, with 14 points and five rebounds, were the most dangerous offensively for the Gators. In women’s division 2, Altona Gators were toppled 70-52 by Blackburn Vikings at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday. Alysha Carden-David had 22 points, 14 rebounds and four steals for the Gators.

By Lance Jenkinson First-year import Jimmy Jensen has become the third player in Newport Rams history to win the coveted George Heron Medal for the most valuable player in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. Jensen joins David Asp (2004-05) and David White (1990-91) as the only Rams to be awarded MVP in the top-flight competition. Rams president Ben Portelli said the three medals were a big deal for the club. “When I looked through the list of winners, there’s not too many clubs that have multiple winners,” he said. “There’s 12 clubs in division 1 and we have promotion and relegation and 24 have rotated through division 1 in the time that this has been awarded, so to have three winners in the space of 25 years is a big achievement for the club.” Bringing an import into your organisation comes with obvious risks. First-hand knowledge of a player’s quality and character might be a little on the vague side. There is also a risk a player simply may not being mentally tuned in and in Melbourne for a holiday. But Newport did due diligence with Jensen to the best of its ability and uncovered a gem. “He’s probably one of the most qualified players we’ve had at the club,” Portelli said. “A thorough professional, he invested himself fully in the club, coached our under-18s. If anyone wanted any tuition at all, he’d go out of his way to help them, whether it was an under-12s kid or one of his teammates. “He set a fantastic example with his fitness levels and trained as hard as anyone. Jensen, who represented the victorious Monachs in the All Star game, was utilised

in a whole host of ways, both offensively and defensively, for the Rams. “He was fantastic on the mound, he was great in the field when we put him at shortstop and he was outstanding in the batters box,” Portelli said. “He’s one of the best pitchers in the state and had a very high batting average.”

Most importantly, the Californian bought into the Rams’ culture. “He flew home last week and wasn’t talking about us as a club and somewhere he played – he actually said he’ll miss his Rams family,” Portelli said. “He certainly made a big impression.”
