From diverse lands united Maori group Te Karangatahi will launch Cultural Diversity Week in Hobsons Bay with a program that aims to showcase its culture to the broader community. President Wairangi Paki said the three-day program, starting March 17 at Altona’s Louis Joel centre, will aim to connect Maori elders and youth. “A lot of them were born here in Australia – they’ve lost their identity, they don’t know who they are, where they’ve come from, and there’s always that need to learn a bit about the history, probably about the language,” he said. Secretary Kahurangi Tumai said the aim is to strengthen children, or tamariki. “Don’t be afraid that you’re different – you’re different in a unique way,” she said. Cultural advisor Graham Anderson said the event was open to all who were interested in learning about the traditions such as carving, poi making, haka and the facial markings known as moko. “The story goes that one of our Maori kings went to England and had an audience with the English monarchy, the king there,” he said. “The king of England said look around the walls, look at my library, there’s my genealogy. “The Maori said, look at my face.” Cultural Diversity Week is from March 18-26. Sunset on Anzac parade “As a committee, we’re really still bonded by the ideal of making sure that Williamstown RSL has a presence some time in the future, and we’re really working hard, even though we officially are suspended as officers of the RSL. “We’re really committed to making sure that we have our Anzac march and also our dawn service in our 100th year – we think that’s really incredibly important.” Mr Rowe said Williamstown Bowls Club had allowed the RSL sub-branch to use its premises as a base for the march, which will be held the Sunday before Anzac Day. The sub-branch is “still working on the dawn service,” he said.

Hobsons Bay councillor Peter Hemphill said it was concerning how things had unfolded. “It’s … a bit sad the way this has all evolved, particularly for a club that’s 100 years old this year,” he said. “I just hope that the club can still function and that the sale proceeds will come back to Williamstown. “That land was gifted to the Williamstown community, and it’s only appropriate that the proceeds of the sale go back [there].” Williamstown MP Wade Noonan described the situation as “extremely troubling”, throwing the future of the RSL locally into doubt. “This is likely to be a long and protracted process with little certainty,” Mr Noonan said. 1219971-HM10-16

The future of the local Anzac Day dawn service is in doubt after Williamstown RSL club was put into voluntary administration. The club must secure insurance to hold the service but has its funds tied, with creditors owed about $1.4 million. Administrator Brent Morgan, of Rodgers Reidy, said “a primary concern is the safekeeping of the memorabilia and maintaining an RSL presence in Williamstown”. Last month, Grocon withdrew a planning application lodged on behalf of RSL Victoria to replace the Williamstown RSL Club, at the

corner of Ferguson Street and Melbourne Road, with a five-storey apartment block and cafe. A community meeting, held at the club in December before it closed, heard that the site, its carpark and an adjacent house owned by the RSL, have been jointly valued at $4.5 million. Williamstown RSL sub-branch president Rob Rowe told Star Weekly the land would now be sold by tender. “It’ll be open to the market to try and get the best result we can,” he said. “We’re still hopeful that, at the end of that, there will be some funds available from the sale to come back to us, so we can establish a small RSL in some form.

Cat owners feel clawed by fees By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong cat owners are crying foul at a jump in registration fees of more than 40 per cent. All dogs and cats above the age of three months must be microchipped and re-registered by April 10 each year. But cat owners are unhappy about a 44 per cent hike in fees from $36 to $52, substantially higher than fees imposed by neighbouring councils including Hobsons Bay ($36),

Melbourne ($32) and Brimbank ($22.90). The fee is now level with the fee charged to register dogs, whereas neighbouring councils still charge more for dogs than cats. Seddon cat owner Jenny said the council needs to justify the “outrageous increase”. She said she was a responsible pet owner of three rescue cats who were indoor only, desexed, registered and microchipped. “When I got the renewal notice in the mail, I thought there had been a misprint,” she said. She said the price hike was likely to act as

a deterrent to registration and lead to more evasions of the registration system. Maribyrnong planning services director Nigel Higgins said cat registration fees had been increased to recoup the increasing cost of dealing with almost 3000 registered cats in the municipality. He said the numbers of wandering cats required around-the-clock staffing to collect them and return them home. “Our first priority is always to reunite lost cats with their owners and we provide an after-hours service for the collection of cats to

facilitate this,” he said. “We try very hard to avoid sending registered cats to the pound as this incurs significant costs and release fees.” Mr Higgins said the council often needed to set cat traps, which can be costly and time-consuming. “We are also required to cover all costs associated with the high number of stray cats and kittens that we end up having to take to the pound,” he said. “Cats can be wonderful pets, but they do pose significant issues to the community at large.”

Ride to remember mum said Ms Baglar’s death should trigger greater commitment from governments to encourage cycling and the “freedom to ride safely”. Ride for Arzu organiser Edward Hore, from the Australian Cycling Alliance, said the ride was a way to celebrate a life cut short. He said seeing more than 200 riders attend the memorial event made him realise how much of a community was built around cycling. “Showing support to a family I have never known showed me that we are all here together,” he said. Ms Baglar is survived by her husband and their two young daughters, aged six and two. Mourners came together on Monday to honour the memory of Melbourne mother Arzu Baglar, killed while cycling in Yarraville on Friday. Ms Baglar, 36, died at the scene after being hit by a southbound truck as it turned left into Somerville Road from Whitehall Street. More than 200 people turned out for the memorial event at Yarraville Gardens on Monday to remember the life of the law student and mother of two. After speeches from community leaders and cycling advocates, cyclists set off on a ride in memory of Ms Baglar, continuing the journey to Williamstown she was never able to complete. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said all levels of governments need to be spending much more to make cycling safe. “We need more spent on our bike lanes, on our road paths and on education … of cyclists and drivers,” Cr Cumming said. Damage no child’s play

Mental health fast-tracked

By Goya Dmytryshchak It would take a strong person to swing a heavy historic pickaxe even once. Overnight Monday last week, someone broke into Logan Reserve’s Altona Homestead, stole a pickaxe and other tools, and hacked to pieces a children’s swing-set in what has been described as a prolonged and “frenzied” attack. Altona Laverton Historical Society president Peter Weaver said it appears the person only stopped when the pickaxe broke.

‘‘

It was almost like they were in a frenzy

’’

- Kim Walsh

The same night, the toilets were trashed at adjacent Weaver Reserve, named after Mr Weaver’s father. “They jumped the Queen Street fence of the homestead, set off the alarm, but jumped in there and grabbed a couple of the old tools,” Mr Weaver said. “They smashed the light on the alarm out on Queen Street, obviously to stop attention coming to them, and then they proceeded to use those tools in the park to smash to smithereens the play equipment. “By looking at it, it wasn’t a five-minute job. They were on a mission to smash it to smithereens.” Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh, a former detective, said there had been reports of people sleeping in the rotunda on Logan Reserve, but whether this has any connection to the attacks is unknown. “To do the damage they did was a long-time offence, it didn’t just take five minutes,” Mr

Peter Weaver with the broken pickaxe after vandals went on a rampage at Altona’s Logan Reserve. (Goya Dmytryshchak)

Walsh said. “It had to take them ages to do. It was almost like they were in a frenzy. “They have smashed into it and completely destroyed it. There’s nothing left of it. It is a disgrace.” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the community has been shocked by the needless

criminal damage at the two popular reserves. “It is also disappointing that ratepayers will ultimately foot the bill for … this unnecessary act of vandalism,” she said. “We implore anyone with any information about this incident to contact police who are currently investigating.”

Patients requiring mental health treatment at Footscray hospital will be fast-tracked through emergency after an $8 million boost to staff and services. A five-year, $19 million funding package for the western suburbs will help streamline patients with mental health issues through emergency departments to dedicated mental health specialists. A consultant liaison psychiatrist will be based in Footscray hospital’s emergency department. Western Health executive director of operations Russell Harrison welcomed Friday’s funding announcement by mental health minister Martin Foley. “This is an important initiative for people in the western suburbs who suffer from mental health issues,” he said. “Having a consultant liaison psychiatrist at Footscray hospital emergency department will enable more patients to receive urgently needed consultations, and will also be an important link between Western Health’s services and mental health services provided by Mercy Health, as well as by community care providers.” Mr Foley said the extra funds would help ease pressure on the health system. The state government remains under pressure to rebuild Footscray hospital’s crumbling emergency department and south block. A report last October called for the rundown hospital to be refurbished or rebuilt within 15 years. Benjamin Millar

Footscray … it’s fabulous By Benjamin Millar

2017

Chalking up 20 years as an elected councillor this week, Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming is adamant she still has unfinished business. The Stony Creek ward councillor says she is proud to be starting her third decade in local government, extending a tenure that stretches back almost to the creation of Maribyrnong council in 1994 when Footscray merged with part of the city of Sunshine. Cr Cumming said her survival through seven terms has been full of ups and downs, but always an “interesting ride”. “The more I do it, the more I love it,” she said. “Because I grew up in Footscray, seeing how it has improved in the last 20 years has been really enjoyable.” The acquisition of her home as a teenager awoke her to the direct role of government in people’s lives, but it was the decision to change the name of her beloved Doggies that fired her passion for politics. “When [then club president] David Smorgon came out and said he was changing from Footscray Bulldogs to Western Bulldogs because Footscray had a stigma to it, I was infuriated,” she said. “All these people had an opinion on Footscray, even if they had never been here.” Cr Cumming said the council has come a long way in 20 years, clawing its way out of heavy debt. She is proud of the improvements that have been made to Whitten Oval, the saving of local libraries, and the creation of the Braybrook Hub and library. The Bulldogs’ first premiership since 1954 has coincided with her term as a mayor, and remains a highlight.

Spotlight on violence, victims

Catherine Cumming marks 20 years on council this week. (Damjan Janevski)

A mother of five, Cr Cumming said she hopes she is leaving a positive legacy for her own children as well as the broader community. Her next mission is improved public housing in Braybrook, and she still hasn’t lost hope in a

revival of the abandoned Westlink project. “Not many people get this opportunity, and I just want to make the most of it, especially speaking up for those most in need in our community.”

“There are no innocent bystanders to dating violence.” That’s the catchline for You the Man, a play featuring five male characters played by one actor, whose lives are impacted by violence committed by other men. The Zonta Club of Melbourne’s West will host a performance of the play at Laverton Community Hub on March 22, followed by a panel discussion. Zonta president, Williamstown’s Heike Fleischmann, said her club aimed to empower women through service and advocacy. “One big advocacy focus is Zonta says no to violence against women,” she said. “With this project You the Man, that’s a perfect opportunity for us to make people aware, especially teenagers and students.” Entry is free but bookings are essential via trybooking.com/254951. Dog park’s last run Brooklyn residents will have one last celebration on March 19 before their pop-up dog park in Cypress Avenue is disassembled. The temporary off-leash park – a fenced-off area on Brooklyn Reserve – was erected as part of the $60,000 Brooklyn Neighbourhood Project, a joint initiative of Hobsons Bay council and CoDesign Studio. Brooklyn resident and dog owner Richard Spiteri said the push would continue for a permanent off-leash area in the suburb. “We have seen such strong support for the temporary off-lead park – it has really become the hub of Brooklyn,” he said. “It has been amazing to see so many neighbours come together, people who have lived just down the street from each other

for years are getting to know each other. The residents are really hoping to see a permanent off-leash fenced area by the end of 2017. “Sadly, previous funding earmarked for a dog park was re-allocated to additional carparks along Cypress Avenue. I’m sure everyone can agree, the last thing Brooklyn needs is more bitumen.” The celebration at Brooklyn Reserve will be on Sunday, on March 19, from 10am-noon. As part of National Neighbour Day on March 26, the Brooklyn Neighbourhood Project will organise a barbecue, tree-planting and other activities in and around Brooklyn Reserve from 9.30am-noon. VU revamp, sackings anger staff, students More than 100 academic staff will be shed as part of a dramatic shake-up of teaching at Victoria University. Staff, students and supporters staged a protest outside a Victoria University council meeting in the city yesterday morning against plans to cut staff as VU sets up a new first-year college. The first-year college, outlined in a document signed off by vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins that was sent to staff on Friday, will be a stand-alone college delivering the first year of bachelor degrees and an integrated Certificate IV program. The document, obtained by Star Weekly Weekly, notes that one in three VU students drop out in their first years, compared to 23 per cent across the sector. Students report a relatively low level of satisfaction – 76.5 per cent, compared to a median of 81.7 per cent across other universities. Satisfaction with support from the university sits at just 67.6 per cent, well below the 74.2 per cent sector-wide median. The document also notes VU has been operating at a loss for four of the past five years and expects another deficit for 2017, placing the financial viability of VU at risk. A VU spokeswoman said the new college will be unlike any other in Australia. “Students will have access to an excellent support program, including enhanced access to teachers and a team with particular expertise in first year learning,” she said. The spokeswoman said support tailored to the needs of students increased rates of student retention, engagement, success and quality of learning. “The VU first-year model represents the

But Dr Paul Adams, president of the National Tertiary Education Union’s VU branch, said plans to sack up to 115 academics would have a severe impact on education quality at VU. He also slammed the decision to axe nine courses one week before semester starts in areas including communication and education. “Many students had turned down offers from elsewhere on the promise of VU courses to which they had applied,” he said. “This really is not good enough.”

Four of Australia’s finest young wordsmiths have been unearthed in a quiet pocket of Yarraville. After Redgum Book Club Young Writers’ Award judges whittled down the Children’s Short Story entries from more than 1000 to just six, four of them were from Wembley Primary School. Ebony Norman, Ella Purkiss, Cameron Truong and Esme Prested had an anxious wait this month before Ebony and Ella’s joint story was last week proclaimed Australia’s best. The pair worked together to create Morsie, a story about growing up with the help of friends, both real and invisible. Their story will be published and distributed by Redgum Book Club.

12332924-RC48-16

Ella said their story was about a girl and her invisible friend, told from the perspective of the invisible friend. “The girl didn’t need her anymore once she was in kindergarten.” Cameron said his story was about a magical musical instrument while Esme wrote about people who started disappearing. Ebony said she loves writing because you get to share what you’re feeling in your own voice. The four all planned their stories and workshopped them with teachers. Redgum Book Club managing director Denny Neave said the award gave children their voices through storytelling. Benjamin Millar

MY PLACE

Free household chemical collection at Keilor Park’s Detox your Home Detox your Home is a safe, FREE and easy-touse service to dispose of common household chemicals without harming your health or the environment.

The generous spirits of the women in her life are a constant source of inspiration for Footscray artist Paola Balla. She speaks with Benjamin Millar.

Keilor Park’s collection 18 March 2017 9.00 am to 1.00 pm Address provided upon registration.

What is your connection with Footscray? I was born in Footscray at the Western General in 1974, on Kulin Country, and lived between my parents, my Aboriginal mother, Margy, in Echuca, and my Italian father here in Footscray.

Simply register online, turn up on the day with your unwanted items – and we’ll do the rest. sustainability.vic.gov.au/detoxyourhome

What do you love most about the area?

Decanting not permitted. Only containers up to 20 litres accepted.

IWM053

The Maribyrnong; all the different language groups and cultures; how it’s down to earth. I love Footscray and will defend it against classism and snobbery. I love the Western Bulldogs, working, doing my PhD at Vic Uni.

ZO780043

STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

I would slow down development to ensure affordable social housing for low income and homeless people, and create more arts support from Maribyrnong council. Have inclusive public art and spaces that are culturally safe for marginalised peoples, respectful of trauma and displacement, and engaging for children and young people. Do you have a favourite local place? Walking along the Maribyrnong River, Barkly Street and the mall, shopping at Footscray Market, Kmart and Savers. Going to FCAC with our mob, and being with our arts community to see art, make art or talk about it! How did you become involved in making art? Art making was a way of life in my mother’s family, either story telling, writing or painting.

(Supplied)

Is there anything you would change?

I’m always hoping to communicate personal, cultural and historical truths. For 22 years I’ve been making my own work, curating others, teaching, lecturing and writing. For the last seven years I’ve been working in First Peoples Art & Culture at FCAC and recently co-curated Sovereignty at ACCA. Who has been your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration in life has been women – either my mother, grandmothers, great grandmother or great great grandmother Papa Mariah Day. Aboriginal women have to endure

so much and they give so much. As artists, Vicki Couzens and Maree Clarke. What might surprise people about you? My dad is Charlie, of Charlies Pizza, an Italian pizza restaurant dad opened in 1974 … one of Footscray’s original restaurants. It’s where I learnt to waitress, make coffee and pizza and, in the ‘80s, play unlimited Pac Man. Paola Balla will be a keynote speaker at the Women of the World festival at FCAC (March 23-25). ICING ON THE CAKE I have a good friend who – knowing my passion for baking – loves to come up with super creative gifts for birthdays and Christmas. Most recently, she handed me a big sparkly bag full of baking goodies. Sitting there amongst the bags of chocolate melts and tubes of colourful cake sprinkles, there was a product I’d never really noticed before on my trips to the supermarket – Coles Soft Set Caramel Icing. It was only the other day I found the perfect use for it – my husband’s birthday cake. Knowing he loves salted caramel, I decided to bake him a chocolate cake, cover it in the Coles icing, and sprinkle chopped salted cashews on top.

MIKE SHEAHAN LEGENDARY FOOTY WRITER AND SEN BREAKFAST PERSONALITY FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? MS: Undeveloped. Fair to poor with potential for improvement.

I’ve never used ready-made soft set icing before, so this was a new experience for me. But when I took the lid off the container, the delicious smell of caramel wafted up and practically hit me in the face. The icing had a rich, syrupy, butterscotch swirl in it, and my hubby remarked it tasted very much like one of his all-time foodie favourites – Werther’s original toffees. The cake turned out a picture of gooey caramel goodness. I can highly recommend this icing product, which also comes in chocolate and vanilla … especially handy if you’re pushed for time.

FB: What is your signature dish? MS: Spag bol (a bloke’s specialty) and an omelette: free-range eggs, ham, tasty cheese, spring onion, parsley and a liberal sprinkling of pepper. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? MS: A hot tiger prawn entree followed by a meat lover’s pizza from Basilico in Albert Park, followed by a pavlova with ice cream with a bottle of Heathcote Estate red. As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? MS: Nigella Lawson ... and anything she says. FB: What is your favourite food? MS: A fresh multi-grain sandwich with ham off the bone and salad - tomato, lettuce, carrot, beetroot and lashings of mild mustard. FB: What is your favourite drink? MS: Chocolate milkshake FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? MS: JFK, Joanna Lumley, Francesca Cumani, John Coleman and Bart Cummings. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip As always, if for youus?have any MS: Don’t take four years to learn how to use your recipes, tips or other oven.

Jas Stephens: 9316 9000 Price: $1 million – $1.0 million Auction: March 18 at 11am

Greg Hocking Elly Partners: 8387 0000 Auction: April 1 at 12.30pm

This beautiful fully-renovated California bungalow in desirable Yarraville is close to the station and everything the village has to offer. The front porch is decked and stained, with loads of room for a rocking chair or recliner. Original boards have been brought back to life and feature in every room but the bathroom (and hallway) where checker navy and white tiling prevail. Three larger-than-usual bedrooms feature gorgeous period windows, high ceilings and light surrounds. The bathroom, which is next to the kitchen, features an over-sized shower and separate bath. Off-street parking for one car via side-access leads to a bricked courtyard where an established garden includes olive trees creating a secluded, European ambience.

This stunning block-front Victorian – within a 10-minute amble of The Strand, train station and cafes – is a showcase of contemporary sophistication. A pearl-grey and white interior palette defines large rooms with high ceilings; lovely American oak floor planks anchor hallway and living domain; and white roller blinds and sheers dress feature windows. The glam, all-white kitchen has seamless cabinetry, stone benches and a tucked-away butler’s area. The main bedroom downstairs has a walk-in wardrobe and sumptuous en suite with freestanding tub and walk-in shower. The two other (fitted) bedrooms are upstairs, as is the sleek main bathroom. A covered alfresco area looks out to immaculate gardens and there’s off-street parking from the rear right-of-way. Other assets include motorised awnings, home automation via smartphone and ducted heating and cooling.

Parkland at the end of the street, plus the train station, Hudsons Road shopping precinct and Spotswood Primary School a 10-minute walk at most, puts this renovated, old-time charmer in a great locale. Restumped and rewired, the house has much potential for improvement, STCA, but is beautifully presented and classically elegant as is. Entry is to a grey-carpeted lounge room with gas log fire. This room connects with the family-meals zone, where parquetry floorboards and white roman blinds add their bit. The kitchen is fresh and streamlined, with stainless-steel appliances and abundant storage. A separate laundry has a closet. A large Vergola covers stamped concrete, which extends out into the leafy backyard where there’s a vegie patch and lock-up garage/workshop. Investors should note that a weekly rental of up to $470 could be achieved.

With stunning spaces thanks to its architectural design, and set back from the edge of the Esplanade in sought-after Altona, this property is itself on the edge of a transformation. A multi-levelled floor plan entertains the eye. Interest is found everywhere you look, whether at double-height ceilings, bespoke windows, or the high-spec, well-chosen 2pac kitchen – this property embodies what is meant by a good find. The propery is opposite Kooringal Golf Course, on a large block with a lock-up double garage and a huge backyard. The residence is awash with light. Three great bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, a main bathroom built with quality in mind, and the main bedroom with obligatory walk-in wardrobe and en suite create a place that feels like a showpiece as much as somewhere to lay your head. Opportunity abounds.

It is a residence where lifestyle meets perfection. Walk down a concrete aggregate path and low maintenance native garden and the high-quality revamp of this property is immediately obvious. floor-to-ceiling timber doors and the bespoke timber staircase are immediately appealing. The main bedroom is spacious and minimalist. A seven-door built-in wardrobe is set behind down-lit bulkhead detailing and an absolutely stunning en suite. So beautiful is this space it rivals the kitchen with the attention to detail and high-quality finishes. An over-sized frameless shower, floating porcelain toilet, huge slabs of Italian marble and Gessi tapware (throughout) ooze elegance and high distinction. Built-in entryway storage follows the style

of the wardrobes throughout. Two further bedrooms follow – all three have their own LG split system. The third bedroom overlooks the backyard and innovative remote-controlled all-glass garage, designed to create a sense of space and openness. Light dances off marble thanks to a second row of touchpad-controlled windows, set beneath double-height ceilings. The hostess kitchen features a 600mm marble waterfall bench and dining-extension feature for casual meals. Soft-close cabinetry, marble splashback,

Miele appliances and more Gessi tapware continue the quest to make that perfect statement. The powder room is dressed in the same Italian marble as others, this one with a free-standing sink. 15 Junction Street, NEWPORT A Warm Sense of Belonging 3A 2B 1C

Auction

If houses could talk, this interesting and inviting Newport charmer would say “Welcome home. Benefiting from both previous and recent renovations, the entire home exudes a wonderful feeling of tranquility and warmth. The alluring appeal of the deeply coloured facade, set behind an interesting, landscaped native garden, invites the admiring eye and sparks interest. Easy, relaxed living is the theme across three living zones and out to the undercover entertaining area on a nice big plot of land with right of way rear access to the double garage, half of which has been converted to a creative studio. We also love the new ensuite, pure wool carpets, plantation shutters throughout, high ceilings, ducted heating, split system cooling and low maintenance rendered exterior. Come and join us for an enjoyable inspection.

ruly exciting. Give the GTR some gas mid-corner and the rear simply digs in for prodigious grip. The more pedal you give it, the harder it digs in and the faster it goes around. There has to be a limit to this and I’m truly relieved I didn’t reach it. Yet the ride quality, while certainly firm, isn’t sharp. Excellent seating helps to make the GTR surprisingly comfortable over long distances. There’s a cacophony of mechanical noises – tyres, transmission, driveline and glorious engine burble as the big V6 rockets to 7500rpm. For an enthusiast this is a symphony, pure and simple. The price is filling up with only the most expensive 98 RON fuel, and the GTR takes heaps of it. It is a true supercar and it need make no excuses to anything that costs under half a mil. As such, it’s bargain basement, but it still has a hard row to hoe. Lots of GTRs, only some of them genuine, have been privately imported and they’re a lead weight on resale value. And the price falls comfortably in Maserati territory.

t would be easy to be intimidated by a car like this, yet driving it turns out to be easy, even just popping down to the shops. The power is phenomenal and delivered with such disarming smoothness it’s easy to go into deep illegality without realising. Overtaking is ridiculously simple, you’re out and back in a flash even on half pedal. Don’t give this car full pedal until you’re completely prepared for what happens. The acceleration presses you back in your seat so hard you’ll hang onto the wheel more as an anchor than a control. Suburban housewife gets to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, experiences jubilation. The GTR is beautifully finished and appointed, even the base (non-leather) edition, but forget the back seat, even for children. The gap between it and the front seat is something you’d post a letter through. The boot is good for a weekend away with a couple of soft bags and maybe a case of wine. I’m surprised I liked this car so much. Just note that you will need to keep your cute little hatchback for any task other than sheer indulgence.

55 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 15, 2017

SPORT Seddon scrapes through to grand final Seddon seized the moment to secure its berth in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s north west division grand final. The Dockers got the better of Druids by two wickets in a thrilling semi-final at Shorten Reserve at the weekend. Over the course of the season, these second and third ranked sides could barely be separated on the ladder – and their only regular season meet-up was a closely-fought battle. So it was anyone’s game in the semi-final – but Seddon had the composure to close it out. Chasing 139 for victory, the Dockers passed the target eight down, albeit with sweaty brows. At 3-6, Seddon was in desperate trouble, but wicketkeeper Mark Webb (52) and middle order batsman Duleeka Thisakuttige (49) came

to the rescue, putting on 89 for the fourth wicket. Druids’ opening bowler Indi Gallage did his best to make life difficult for Seddon, taking 4-31 off 17 overs. Jared Andrews (2-19) and Thineth Arachchige (2-35) also took valuable wickets for the Druids, but they just did not have sufficient runs on the board. Getting bowled out for 138 was where the Druids lost it. They had no answer for the marathon bowling spells of Seddon’s Tom Kriebardis (4-32 off 24.2) and Hayden Dryiski (4-61 off 23), who combined for 47.2 overs. Seddon will meet Sunshine United in the grand final at Laverton Park, with the winner guaranteed promotion to the VTCA top flight.

In north-west B1, West Newport booked a grand final berth, toppling East Keilor by two wickets in an Overland Reserve cliffhanger. Lions’ Corey Irving took four wickets as they restricted East Keilor to 9-170, then the Lions clawed back from 7-95 to win on the back of 48 to man-of-the-match Irving. West Newport face minor premiers Royal Park-Brunswick in a Western Oval decider at Royal Park. In west A1, Williamstown Imperials have set up a grand final showdown with Seabrook at Saltwater Reserve. The Imperials won through to the big show by three wickets over Melton Centrals. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ It

was a forgettable weekend for a couple of our leading cricket teams who picked the wrong weekend to capitulate. Most notably, the Werribee first XI crashed out of the VSDCA east-west finals. The Tigers won the toss and batted. That is an exaggeration – they were knocked over for a meek 55. It was game over from there, with Balwyn easily passing that total. Altona also progressed no further than the semi-finals, beaten by Noble Park, while season pacesetter Williamstown won its way through by downing Taylors Lakes and looks the goods to bring another flag to Point Gellibrand. Veteran Craig Sheedy starred again with four wickets, while the batting line-up performed as it has all year. Good luck to those teams in grand finals in coming weeks.

■ The

WRFL has revised the second division draw for 2017 following the demise of the Glenorden senior team, with clubs making the necessary adjustments to their schedules. Credit to them because they have had to bear the brunt of another club’s problems. The annual Good Friday game between Hoppers Crossing and St Albans will be held at Hogans Road Reserve. Braybrook and North Sunshine will play in the Anzac Day game at Pennell Reserve in what has become a very important day to honour our war veterans and their families.

■ It

Perfect timing, Clubbers By Lance Jenkinson It’s March – and that means it’s Yarraville Club’s time to shine. The finals masters were at it again at the weekend, playing their way to another Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division grand final. In typical fashion, the Clubbers are peaking at the right time of the season, beating their latest finals victim, Spotswood, by 67 runs in a hard-fought semi-final at the Walker Oval. The Clubbers have set up a four-day grand final showdown with minor premiers Greenvale Kangaroos at Donald McLean Reserve in Spotswood, starting on Saturday. “We’ve been starting to hit our straps in the last month,” Clubbers coach Michael O’Keefe said. “We played some pretty good cricket this match. Things are coming together at the right time for us.” While Yarraville Club has an incredible history of sustained success in the senior

division, Greenvale is the side with the most recent grand final appearance. The Kangaroos reached the decider last summer, going down to South Caulfield. Greenvale has beaten the Clubbers on both occasions they’ve played this season, so it will be expecting to complete the sweep. “They’re a really good side and we certainly have to do everything right to beat them,” O’Keefe said. “We’ve played them twice and they’ve beaten us twice, so they’re going to go in as favourites.” But it would be ridiculous to discount Yarraville Club. The Clubbers have featured in 11 of the past 14 grand finals and won eight premierships in that time. Their most recent grand final was in 2014-15 when they completed back-to-back triumphs. Ominously, O’Keefe reckons his team can go up another gear or two in the next fortnight. “We’ve still got a lot of improvement in us,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve played to our 100

56 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 15, 2017

per cent potential yet, so hopefully we can do that over the next fortnight.” Yarraville Club set up its victory over Spotswood by posting 294 on day one. Joey Blake (70), Justin Baker (65) and Konrad Kurta (54) led the way for the Clubbers. Spotswood fell well short in the chase, making 227. Jeremy Brown (81), Matt Leddin (40) and Gene Maurice (31) threatened for the Woodsmen, but the Clubbers invariably found ways to halt their momentum. “There’s lots of ups and downs in semi-finals – it’s the hardest game to win,” O’Keefe said. “To Spotty’s credit, they fought hard all day yesterday and today, but anything over 250 in a final is probably worth 300 any other time. “The pressure you can put the opposition under if you’ve got a decent score on the board makes a massive difference.” Hussain Hanif (3-36) and Andrew Cullen (3-9) sealed victory for the Clubbers with three wickets apiece.

is always sad to report of the passing of local sports identities, but especially so when they are young and vibrant members of the western suburbs community. Marcel Bouchaud lost his brave battle with brain cancer last week at the age of 35. Many will remember the “Beanie for Bird” day run by his much-loved Port Melbourne Colts Football Club to raise funds for Marcel’s family and awareness of this killer that targets young men. Marcel was a hugely popular figure at Murphy Reserve and will be sorely missed by all, especially his wife, Shalini, their family and his vast army of admirers and friends. Jarryd Ramsay was just 25 when his life ended last week. The Ramsay name is a well known and revered one in sport in the west and this tragic passing will be felt far and wide. Jarryd was a talented footballer with Hoppers Crossing and, in the past few seasons, with Melton. RIP. Two men taken well before their time.

Footscray Edgewater cops painful reality check they lost during the second day as they perished for 236 in 79.4 overs. Greg Munro was a mainstay of the innings with 65, while there were plenty of others who got starts, including Matthew Gudde (34), Russ (30), Tim Buszard (23) and Dylan Kight (22), but there was nothing to seriously threaten the Magpies. The Bulldogs’ fourths suffered a shock loss to Prahran by one wicket at the Merv Hughes Oval. Meanwhile, at least one Hobsons Bay club will feature in this summer’s Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west grand final. Whether it is Williamstown or Altona will be determined in an all-west semi-final at Williamstown Cricket Ground this weekend. Williamstown will go in as favourites, having been the dominant side in the competition all

season, culminating in the minor premiership. Altona would love nothing more than to advance to the season-decider at the expense of a local rival.

By Lance Jenkinson Footscray will send one of its most multicultural squads into battle in the Victorian Rugby Union this season. The Bulldogs have long had overseas connections, with players from as far as New Zealand, Japan and England in recent seasons, but this off season they have added new players from Argentina, France and Italy. First-year Bulldogs coach Tia Suemai could not be happier with the melting pot of nationalities joining the local contingent. “It’s fantastic,” he said. “We want to be a club that’s diverse in background, diverse in colour. “They love rugby … it’s a great sport to bring everyone together. “Every training, we’ve been talking about one team, one culture.” Suemai understands the demographics of the western suburbs. As a development officer for the Melbourne Rebels, Suemai worked in schools and clubs in the west, gaining first-hand insights into what makes the region tick. Suemai was born in New Zealand and has travelled abroad for rugby, so he knows how big a role a club can play in the life of a travelling worker or student. “A couple of them are here for work, a couple of them study at Victoria University – they just live in the area and want to play rugby,” he said. “There’s one or two that have a lot of potential to play in our first team. “They just want to be part of that rugby culture and belong to a team because they don’t

Yarraville Glory was victorious 4-3 in a fast and furious FFA Cup third-round clash at Kim Reserve on Saturday. The Glory came back from a goal down at half-time to win on the back of two second-half goals, with Tony Merakis’s team moving through to the fourth round to face Hume United. Altona City took care of business with a 2-0 win over Skye United at Kim Reserve, while Altona East Phoenix edged Rosebud Heart 2-1 at Paisley Park. Altona Magic defeated North City Wolves 8-1 in a rout at Wallace Reserve. In the fourth round, Altona City will entertain RMIT, Altona East has a trip to Preston Lions and Altona Magic hit the road to play Bendigo City.

Williamstown was made to work every step of the way to overcome sixth seed Taylors Lakes by 39 runs in a quarter-final at home. The Seagulls recovered from 7-105 to post 203 after late heroics from Brenton Hodges (56) and a supporting cast of Matthew Twentyman (25), Luke Rainone (29) and Daniel Popa (22 not out). Taylors Lakes fell short when all out for 164. Craig Sheedy (4-37), Bryce Preston (3-36) and Popa (2-35) were the main destroyers for the Seagulls. Altona sunk to a 104-run loss to Noble Park, but survived as top-ranked loser. Chasing the Parkers’ 5-276, Altona scored 163, with tailender Stefan Sidari top-scoring with 32. Altona will need to improve if it wants to have any chance against Williamstown.

have much family around here. It’s a family club and they’re already feeling a part of that … it’s a credit to the boys for making everyone feel welcome. “That’s what we want – whoever loves rugby, come down, train hard and we’ll support you.” The start of season 2017 will pose stiff challenges for Footscray, with powerhouse clubs Melbourne Unicorns, the current Dewar Shield holders, and Harlequins, last year’s runners-up, on the schedule for the first two matches. The good news for the Bulldogs is that both games are on home turf, with the Unicorns the first team to visit on March 25. “They’re the biggest two clubs here in Melbourne,” Suemai said. “It’s great for us to play them straight away – I wouldn’t have it any other way. “That’s the best way to see where we’re at, when we’re playing against these top teams.” In his first pre-season, Suemai has been delighted by the collective buy-in of the Footscray players. Everything he has set out on the training track has been followed to the nth degree so far. “We want a structure that will not only focus on the top-end team, but will filter down to all of the other senior teams,” he said. “It’s still a learning process, but the boys have really picked up a lot of the stuff. “They have really embraced the values and the culture that we’re setting out. “The feedback we’ve been getting from players is they’re enjoying their training.”

Footscray Edgewater’s finals campaign in Victorian Premier Cricket was fleeting. The Bulldogs ran into a red-hot Camberwell Magpies outfit that refused to back down. The Magpies, minor premiers after the home-and-away rounds, showed the gulf in class between first and eighth with a commanding 86-run win. Camberwell batted into day two and posted an imposing 322 off 104.4 overs. Paceman Hamish Winter-Irving continued his fine summer with the ball for Footscray Edgewater, taking 4-54 off 25 overs. Dean Russ is better known for his batting, but the former skipper bobbed up with 5-45 off 21.4 overs, exceeding his total wicket tally for the season in one fell swoop. The chase was always going to be an uphill task for Footscray Edgewater. The Bulldogs were not helped by the steady stream of wickets

Big hits for softball Sam By Lance Jenkinson Outfielder Sam Reale was taken aback when he was named as the lone Victorian in the all-tournament team at the under-19 National Softball Championships last month. The shocks have continued, with the Werribee product named in the Australian Junior Steelers squad, which will form the bulk of the team that will feature at the WBSC Junior Men’s World Championships in Canada next year. “I was so stunned when they called my name out,” said Reale of the acknowledgement of his performances for the Big V in the nationals at Redlands in Queensland. “Everything that I got asked to do, I did well, and the selectors that were there saw that.” Reale was representing Victoria on the national stage for just the second time. What makes his achievement all the more special is that he is a bottom-age player. The 17-year-old was able to take it up to the best 19-year-old softballers in the country. Reale is like money in the out-field. He is good under the high ball and his speed allows him to cover a lot of territory to track down ground balls. Fielding alone does not earn all-tournament selection, so he complemented that with an outstanding batting average exceeding the .400 mark. As the lead-off hitter, getting on base is Reale’s goal – and he does that regularly with a mixed bag of tricks. “I’m more of a contact hitter, so I’ll hit the singles, doubles and triples – I’m not so much of a power hitter,” he said. “One of my favourites is dropping down a bunt and trying to beat the throw out. “I’m quick, so I like to challenge people and their throws and speed.”

Reale, five years a member of the Werribee Softball Association and two years a baseballer with the Werribee Giants, will be given every opportunity to state his case for inclusion in Australia’s junior world championships team. The Werribee resident will be part of the Junior Steelers elite training camp and Softball Australia International Friendship Series in Redlands from June 30 and will be looking to put his best foot forward, with selection for Canada strongly weighted in favour of those who perform well at this series. “To get selected in the squad is a massive honour,” Reale said. “It’s really exciting, but scary as well, given that I was the only one from Victoria. “I feel like there’s going to be a lot of pressure because they’re [the selectors] going to be on us like bees on honey.” Reale, a Year 12 student at MacKillop College, thanked his mum, Tanya, who was recently appointed to the Softball Victoria board, for her backing in his sports endeavours. He also acknowledged the work of his coaches, Will Tangaroa, Chris Holiday and Shane Goodall. Beyond the under-19 softball world championships, Reale wants to earn a scholarship to a US college and could a pursue a career in baseball. Reale is the March nominee of the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/or national levels. It is hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly. Reale will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes, to assist him in achieving his sports goals.
