Speedsters, beware Go easy on the accelerator and keep an eye on your speedometer over the coming Labour Day weekend. Westgate highway patrol will be targeting speedsters over the upcoming long weekend, part of a number of operations planned for the Westgate division, which includes Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. Westgate highway patrol unit commander Jason Templar said general duties police officers would be teaming up with highway patrols over the long weekend to ensure drivers stick to the rules. “As far as long weekends go, we’ve had some horror long weekends,” Senior Sergeant Templar said. “A lot of our focus divisionally is on the highway, in particular the Princes and West Gate freeways.” Last year, police detected 116 traffic offences across Wyndham over the Labour Day long weekend through random breath testing and regular patrols. Police pulled over 32 unregistered vehicles, 22 for seatbelt offences, 17 speeding drivers, 15 unlicensed drivers, 12 for mobile phone offences and 10 for drug driving offences. He would not comment on whether police are constrained by their safe pursuit policy. A source told Star Weekly that many Harley Davidsons had after-market exhaust systems that were much louder than stock systems, and these did not meet noise emissions standards. “The noise is part of the appeal of these bikes,” the source said. “Riders getting caught are issued an infringement notice and have to take the bike in for a noise test. “They then just bolt the standard exhaust on, take the test and pass, and be on their way. I went through this with my bike years ago.”
An Altona Meadows resident, who asked not to be named, said one of the most commonly identified problem motorcyclists, who wears a Nazi-style helmet and skull bandana, nearly crashed into children on Friday. “He nearly came a cropper on Roach Drive as the schoolchildren were walking home,” he said. “I have called police numerous times, as have the neighbours, and they have spoken to them and know where they live.” Another resident in Altona said he witnessed the same rider passing on the left-hand side of vehicles. Fines for motorcycles that exceed noise levels are $389. 1219971-HM10-16
Police admit they are frustrated by noisy ‘rogue’ motorcyclists in Hobsons Bay, who residents say are turning the area into scenes from The Fast and the Furious. Senior Constable Josh Stolk, of Westgate highway patrol, said police were conducting operations almost daily, particularly in Altona Meadows, but motorcyclists were making a mockery of the road laws. He said motorcyclists caught with excessively loud bikes were re-fitting compliant exhaust systems for testing, then switching back.
“If they have changed the exhaust and it then complies, then that is all we can do,” Senior Constable Stolk said. “Then they can change it back, and we have to see them riding again. “When people are constantly causing issues for the community and we speak to those people, and they continue to do it and we enforce them, and they still continue to do it – it’s very frustrating for the police. “We are there nearly on a daily basis in Altona Meadows. They’ve got numerous addresses around, and we target them on a constant basis,” Senior Constable Stolk said. 1182408-CG18-15

Dogs attacked, owners warned By Goya Dmytryshchak After a spate of dog attacks, owners are being warned to be vigilant and keep their animals on a leash if they are not socialised. Deanna Garrasi says her shar pei, Kingston, is recovering after being bitten multiple times at the Altona dog beach about 4.30pm on February 15. She says the owner of the other dog, possibly a German shorthaired pointer or bullmastiff, took off after the attack. Ms Garrasi said the owner was Caucasian, in his 20s, spoke with an accent, and was wearing blue boardshorts. “The owner must take responsibility for what happened and ensure he keeps his dog on a leash and in a muzzle at all times around
people and dogs so this doesn’t happen again,” she said. “It’s unfortunate the owner was not respectful enough to do the right thing and at least look after the vet and surgical billing.” Vicky Buckingham’s westie Maltese, Bella, was last month attacked in Pier Street, Altona, by a dog on a leash. Although the owners exchanged details, Ms Buckingham said the incident served as a warning for dog owners to be vigilant. “Don’t be complacent when you have control of your dog around streets and cafes,” she said. “A dog can move quickly and aggressively so you need to be aware of your environment at all times.” Last year, there were 77 reported dog attacks
in Hobsons Bay; 25 of them were classified as ‘rushes’. Mayor Sandra Wilson said while most attacks were minor, animal attacks were traumatic and pet owners were ultimately responsible for the actions of their animals. “All dogs, regardless of their breed, must be properly socialised to ensure our community’s safety. “Importantly, they must be kept on a lead unless in an off-lead area,”Cr Wilson said. “Common sense should apply even in off-lead areas. If your dog is not trained or socialised, then it’s advised to keep them on a lead.” Anyone with information on dog attacks is urged to contact the council’s animal services unit on 9932 1000, or 9947 4685 if after hours.

railway station, but when the location proved unavailable she cast her search farther afield. She discovered a welcoming home at the Happy River Cafe, part of the Footscray Community Arts Centre on Moreland Street, and the project moved from an idea to reality. Ms Geelen is hoping the garden will attract a broad spectrum of the community and that people will want to be involved in its upkeep. Tools and water will be available when the cafe is open, or people can take their own any time. The garden is due to be officially opened on March 18. A new community garden is laying down roots at a popular Footscray cafe. The Cross Roads Community Garden will be sprouting at Happy River Cafe this month after an exhaustive search for a suitable location. Landscape designer Tash Geelen says the shared garden space will be a place people can come together weekly or in their own time to do some planting or weeding, or simply grab a plant or produce that might catch their eye. “We’re running it is as an open-style community garden where people can get involved in our meetings and sign up to help out, or just come down and help themselves.” Ms Geelen initially wanted to start a community garden near West Footscray

Drug abusers jailed for Aldi raid By Goya Dmytryshchak Two men have been sentenced for armed robberies committed at Central Square shopping centre in Altona Meadows last year. Geoffrey Paul Dale, 47, and Daniel Robert Norris, 34, pleaded guilty in the County Court to robbing the Aldi supermarket and TAB with kitchen knives stolen from Coles on February 18 last year. The court this month heard Norris, a long-term drug abuser, had previously been jailed for armed robbery, and was on bail and
serving a community corrections order when he robbed Central Square. On remand, he had to be placed in protective custody because two of his family members are prison officers. He was sentenced to five years and seven months’ jail, and will be eligible for parole after three years and six months. The court heard that Dale, a long-term criminal and also a drug abuser, gained about 60 kilograms while on remand and was so obese that a crutch he needed for walking would not fit around his forearm.
He had been released from prison just days before the Altona Meadows robberies and was living with Norris in a wrecked car. He was sentenced to five years with a three-year minimum. The two stole an old Ford Falcon about 9am on the day of the robberies and less than an hour later were at Central Square. Dale waited in the car while Norris went to Coles and stole two kitchen knives. Norris then returned to the car and pulled a stocking over his face before entering the TAB. He put a sports bag on the counter and
pointed a knife at the woman on the other side, demanding: “Give me all the money”. When she refused, Norris fled empty-handed. He then ran into Aldi and pointed his knife at the store manager, who was serving a young woman with her baby boy seated in a trolley. After being given money from the till, Norris went to the next register and robbed the female cashier, before running with the cash. Despite being in shock, the Aldi workers took down the registration number of the getaway car. The pair was arrested 11 days later.
Cycle of independence Seven women from Myanmar’s Karen community have built their own bikes for transport thanks to funding provided under Hobsons Bay council’s quick-response grants program. Groups and organisations are now being invited to apply for grants of up to $5000 under the next funding round. Mayor Sandra Wilson said the council allocated $286,000 in the previous funding round for projects including health workshops; an Indigenous awareness program in primary schools; and cultural, youth and seniors’ activities. “One project funded by community grants last year was the Hobsons Bay communities of Burma bicycle project,” she said. “Using a grant of $5000, the Wyndham Community and Education Centre provided a five-week bike skills, safety and maintenance course, under the guidance of a Karen
interpreter, for newly arrived Hobsons Bay residents and refugees from Myanmar [formerly Burma].” The centre’s education coach, Craig Spicer, said seven women from Hobsons Bay’s Myanmar community had been taught to build and ride their own bikes, which they used as a mode of transport, including rides to job interviews. “The grant provided each participant with a bicycle, helmet, pump, lock and reflective vest,” he said. “This has been a stand-out program; the benefit to the participants, the environment and the overall community are overwhelming.” Laverton participant Lor Na said she regularly used her bike to visit friends and relatives. “Learning to build my own bicycle was a wonderful experience and gave me a real sense of achievement,” she said. Applications are open until April 12 or until funds run out.

Kinnears towers plan tied up By Benjamin Millar Plans for more than 200 of almost 1500 new apartments proposed for the former Kinnears rope factory site at Footscray have been lodged with Maribyrnong council. A permit application for the $63 million first stage of the 3.3-hectare Kinnears precinct plan for 124-188 Ballarat Road was due to go to the vote at last night’s council meeting. Approval is sought for stage 1B of the plan, which comprises three storeys rising from street level, with inter-connected 15, 12 and eight-storey towers set back above. Stage 1B proposes 208 dwellings, 539 square metres of retail space and 177 on-site car spaces.
The 208 dwellings would be made up of 55 one-bedroom, 142 two-bedroom and 11 three-bedroom dwellings. The proposal includes the construction of a new road – ‘Dougie Hawkins Parade’ – linking Ballarat Road to Kinnear Street. The plans propose 177 car parking spaces, eight motorbike spaces and 143 bicycle spaces. The design also alludes to the former rope works, proposing a pattern on the façade. The plan has been criticised for its expected impact on traffic in the busy corridor. But a council staff report states that the overall layout, form, heights, setbacks and uses generally fit the approved development plan. “The proposal has strong state and local

policy support, being located in a substantial change area, defined as a site-specific strategic redevelopment site,” it states. “Subject to conditions … the proposal is
considered to be generally in accordance with the approved DP and is consistent with the relevant provisions of the Maribyrnong planning scheme.” The council report recommends conditions for approving the permit, including doubling the number of three-bedroom dwellings to 10 per cent, and a requirement for all balconies to have a minimum area of eight square metres. There is also requirement that five per cent of all dwellings built in stage 1B be designated for affordable or social housing, As the proposal is in keeping with an approved development plan, it is exempt from advertising and cannot be appealed at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.
Street of lost dreams
2017
Residents of a quiet Footscray street are worried that rapid development is threatening to overwhelm their neighbourhood. A number of new developments are under construction or planned for Stafford Street, an area previously lined with predominantly stand-alone dwellings. Resident Stephanie Driver said a number of new residential developments are putting too much pressure on the street, including a neighbouring site set to include five two-bedroom townhouses with only three off-street car spaces. “Because we have the cafe on the corner we already have difficulties with parking,” she said. “We’re also concerned about the reduction of the street appeal.” Kelly O’Mara said she and her partner had been attracted to the street by a “ramshackle
but lovely” Victorian cottage they intend to bring back to life over the next few years. “The rapid gentrification of Footscray has drawn people to this amazing cultural hub … we want to welcome more people to this area,” she said. “But we just feel that cramming the maximum number of cheaply built townhouses into a block with no provision for parking is really sad for our community.” Resident Geoff Brown said Footscray was experiencing development at a rate that was too fast for the suburb to handle. He said new developments were going up at such a rate that traffic studies were meaningless because they didn’t take into effect the cumulative impact. Footscray’s population is forecast to be almost 46,000 by 2041. Benjamin Millar

Julie Hooy and Fiona Hyde are running an end-of-life doula training course. (Damjan Janevski)
There for the transition It’s a subject still considered taboo for many – talking about death. Williamstown’s Fiona Hyde is an end-of-life doula – like a midwife who helps people at the other end. Until the end of March, Ms Hyde and psychotherapist Julie Hooy are running a five-week course in Williamstown for people who are dying and their loved ones. Ms Hyde, who is also a yoga teacher, said she had always been interested in working with people at end of life to help them with that transition. “Last year, I did end-of-life doula training, which is quite a new thing for Australia,” she said. “Birth doula has been quite a big thing for many decades and now there’s
this new movement and especially with the baby boomers and an ageing population … in America they’re sometimes called death doulas. “But they’re basically a support person to be with people when they’re dying, and it may be for someone who’s on their own and doesn’t have any family, or it could be just that a family doesn’t feel equipped or there’s a lot of anxiety or there might be a lot of anger, or whatever. “So, the doula would come in and just support, not only the dying person, but the family if they need it as well.” For bookings and inquiries, call Ms Hyde on 0431 080 157. Be bold, walk for women it, and I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to do it in a peaceful way … show my respect and my solidarity with my sisters everywhere.” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the walk aims to celebrate the achievements of inspirational women locally and globally. “Everyone is welcome to join us and march in support of gender equality,” she said. “The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘be bold for change’, and each step of the walk will recognise the many steps it’s taken to move towards gender equality.” The day starts with a free yoga session at 9am, followed by the walk, live music, face-painting and food trucks until noon.
Everyone is invited to walk around Newport Lakes Park on Sunday, March 5, in celebration of International Women’s Day. Amal Abou-Eid, who is on the Hobsons Bay council women’s committee, said she was hoping to see many Muslims at the event. “As an Australian with equal pay, equal job opportunities, equal education opportunities, I would push for that every day and any day,” she said. “And I would want my kids to do the same – I’ve got two sons of my own. “It’s sad that we’re still marching for these sorts of things – equal rights and women’s freedoms, and all that sort of thing – but I think that it has to happen. “It’s great that we’re doing something about

NEWS
MY PLACE Maribyrnong’s Melba Marginson has learnt the power of grassroots efforts to affect major change. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. I came to Australia because I fell in love with an Aussie bloke. I had to leave my mother country, the Philippines, and I’ve been living in the western suburbs for 28 years now. Footscray was one of the most multicultural suburbs in Melbourne in the 1980s. My neighbours were Greek, Indian, Macedonian, Chinese, Filipino, and Middle Eastern. What do you love most about the area? I love the people, markets, parks and gardens and art scene, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Footscray Library, Footscray Market, Little Saigon, Yarraville shops, The Sun [cinema], Highpoint and the Edgewater Boulevard area where I now live. We still get stigmatised as the suburbs where gangs, drug addicts, and mentally ill people live; we should have a more positive image that still doesn’t cover up these realities. Your favourite local places to spend time? There’s my previous house in Maidstone, an Edwardian bungalow built in the 1930s, and my current apartment in Maribyrnong, which has a panoramic view of Melbourne and suburbs from my balcony … Highpoint because I love shopping there … Maribyrnong City Council premises where I worked as the diversity planner for three years and the Footscray Migrant Resource Centre [now closed] along Pickett Street where I worked as a settlement planner … also The Sun and the Yarraville precinct where I feel I’m in a different world.
How did you become involved in women’s and migrant rights advocacy? In the first month since my migration here in 1989, I attended the funeral of Gene Bongcodin, a Filipino woman who was strangled to death by her ex-husband. In the next eight months, two more Filipino women were killed in Melbourne. I realised then that I have the opportunity to help immigrant and refugee women who were potential victims of domestic violence in this country. I went on to set up the Centre for Philippines Concerns Australia and the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition. Recently, I initiated the formation of The Silent Witness Network, giving a voice to multicultural young people and children of domestic violence victims and survivors. What is the most rewarding aspect of being involved in ‘Her Place: Women in the West’? I believe in the exhibition’s goal of recognising women’s contributions at the local community level that have influence statewide and nationally. I believe in the motto: “Think globally, act locally”. That’s been how I live my life and it proves correct. That’s how we as individuals can be agents of change! Her Place: Women in the West (March 7-31) at Victoria University at MetroWest shares the stories of 10 women in the west, including Melba Marginson, Susan Alberti, Paola Balla, Kerry Greenwood, Joan Kirner and Alice Pung. Teachers still tops in the robot age When experts met last year at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, there was general agreement that the world is about to experience what is being dubbed the Fourth Industrial Revolution. They discussed predictions that this next stage in society’s development will be all about artificial intelligence, or robots, taking the place of humans at work. Education International (EI) general secretary Fred van Leeuwen was in Davos for the summit. He says he couldn’t help but question what a robot-run world would mean for creating jobs for humans, especially in the field of education. “The educator of the Fourth Industrial Revolution? Wishful thinking of some education businesses, but highly unlikely,” he says. “Robots and new technology are increasingly deployed to help educators improve teaching and learning – but nothing can replace a teacher.” Technology is a reality in today’s classrooms and much of the talk and excitement in Davos was focused on the next industrial revolution.
But experts agreed the key to quality education remained living, breathing classroom teachers – despite all the digital hype. Discussions around the oft-used term “21st Century Learning” led to a conclusion that it can fail to acknowledge the most important part of quality learning – the teaching profession. Education International says that “21st Century Learning” puts the emphasis on technological innovation over pedagogical practice that includes critical thinking, creativity and logic. “When it comes to the use of information communication technologies (ICTs), EI fully supports their inclusion in the classroom to enhance the quality of education in line with curriculum requirements,” van Leeuwen continues. “However, ICTs should never replace the relationship between the learner and teacher – and all teachers should be properly trained and consulted on their use.” Carole Levy

Set within a quiet cul-de-sac abutting Cruickshank Park, 76 Bishop Street has a Hamptons-style design and refinement. Bedrooms are all on the ground floor where double-height ceilings create a great sense of space. The main bedroom has a walk-through wardrobe and a fully-tiled en suite with 40mm stone benchtops. Three other bedrooms are fully carpeted, all with built-in wardrobes. The main bathroom features a Japanese plunge bath and shower with feature basins and stone benchtops. Upstairs, a large balcony overlooks Cruickshank Park, and there is another north-facing balcony off a second living zone. The modern white 2pak kitchen here has 40mm stone benchtops, Smeg appliances and plenty of storage. There’s an office too, and the dining area. The house has zoned heating/cooling, and there is a single garage and single carport.
Every inch of this standout property has been considered, its renovation created by an owner-architect using quality materials throughout. The perfectly presented Victorian entrance has original lime-washed floorboards and high ceilings. There are three bedrooms off the hall, two with built-in wardrobes, the main with a stunning en suite featuring wood and marble, also replicated in the main bathroom, which has a shower-bath with glass detail. Polished concrete floors in the kitchen-meals area are set off by a double-height ceiling. The black feature kitchen has stainless-steel appliances and a glass atrium. The living/entertaining area has exposed paving and made-to-measure steel window frames. A bespoke double-landing staircase leads to a fourth bedroom or office. There’s a studio with toilet and bathroom out back, and a lap pool amidst landscaping.

A contemporary build with a fantastic layout, a low maintenance outdoors, and close to the award-winning Newport Lakes Primary School – this is a great family place. Its setting in Newport’s dress circle, where location does matter, is only reinforced once you step inside. The quality kitchen with Smeg appliances has gorgeous stone benchtops and features a pull-out pantry to maximise space. The open feel of the ground floor is created using bifold doors that open to a user-friendly large outdoor area on floorboards. One of three bedrooms is found on the ground floor with a powder room and full laundry. Upstairs the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and fully-tiled en suite, rumpus room, main bathroom and third bedroom – a great layout for young families.
With the space and layout of a comfortable family property, this townhouse is a great opportunity for first-home buyers, investors or downsizers. Its refreshed and modernised spaces are flooded with light. Original floorboards have been sanded back and stained in a honey hue, off-set by crisp white walls. Downlights keep things modern, while original features such as 1950s-era interior sliding doors, cornices and window frames have been kept. A great kitchen-meals area overlooks the yard, adjacent the main living space featuring gas fire and overhead fan. The great-sized front yard could be easily fenced and turned into a family-friendly outdoor space and there is a single garage.

SEDDON 26 Austin Street, 3011 Sweeney Real Estate: 9687 8388
Price: $870,000 – $950,000
Traditional touches meet contemporary comforts in this delightful three-bedroom period residence, with everything the young family or professional couple would need. High ceilings and refurbished original floor and skirting boards set the tone that is unmistakably inner-west chic. A white picket front fence shows off the heritage facade, now renovated to create a stunning first impression in a contemporary grey and egg-white colour palette. Enter a beautifully landscaped front yard taking the side entry on to a super-sized original porch. Period lead-lighting surrounds the front door.

Auction: March 4 at noon
The symmetry between interior ceiling heights and spacious rooms is one of the reasons period houses are so popular. Despite its small footprint, the abode feels spacious, set on a quiet street of other well-maintained period houses. All three bedrooms have ceilings of more than 3.5 metres. Sash windows in all bedrooms uphold the balance of light and space. Original floorboards have been reconditioned. The living room is beautifully renovated, with a gas fire in the original chimney cavity. A restored sash window here creates a
warm, contemporary feel. The kitchen’s breakfast bench has a pot belly stove to warm the cockles during cooler seasons while a dining space and a small laundry are adjacent. Through two sets of french doors, the bricked courtyard opens out to a sun trap that floods the house with morning light. A side area in the courtyard is a fantastic space for a kitchen garden. The newly renovated bathroom has subway tiling. The shower-bath has a glass feature and porcelain sink atop its contemporary vanity.
1
The house could easily extend up, subject to council approval, and double your space. Seddon’s fantastic array of cafes, the organic supermarket and a plethora of restaurants are a short stroll down the street; the ever-popular Gammon Street park – five minutes down the road. And, there’s plenty of permit-only street parking. This is the kind of property where new owners will be able to enjoy the balance of old and new that has been so perfectly created. Sam Freestone

SPORT Tottenham cyclist takes out the finale Tottenham resident Matthias Kiernan jumped to a breakaway to take out the A-grade finale of the Beach Road Summer Criterium cycling series at Altona’s fast and wide Drake Boulevard. The riders were greeted by a perfect summer’s morning, with light breezes and blue skies. Kiernan, 30, of Brunswick Cycling Club, took advantage of a trademark Miles DaCosta solo breakaway. “I attacked at the start and was brought back by the bunch; then Miles went off the front and I got across,” Kiernan recalled. “We were suffering pretty badly until Morgan Smith came across to us and he was pulling much
harder turns than either of us. We worked consistently until we lapped the field and we let them go for the sprint for fourth at the end. “Then I let Miles go and sat on Morgan’s wheel until I put in an attack that worked. “This is my first win in quite a while, so it’s pretty welcome.” Kiernan took the win from Smith and DaCosta, with Andrew Bonello taking the bunch sprint for fourth. Dom Dudkiewicz took the Beach Road Cycles Series, winning with a conservative run in the pack. It was a necessary move given that later in the day he was competing in the state championships. Dudkiewicz pipped
Bonello by a single point in overall standings. In B-grade, St Kilda’s Sam Gartner tore up the bunch sprint to win comfortably from Dan Purcell and veteran Agi Giramondo. Mat Hudson showed more consistent form to take the C-grade win from Paolo Bondi and Daniel Atkins, while D-Grade’s sprint was taken out by Scott Morrison over Paul Longfield and Damien Hall. In women’s racing, Danielle Baxter streeted the field in only her second race. The novice rider is now two-for-two after a solo breakaway that lapped the field. Mark Micallef
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Werribee, after what could be best described as an inconsistent summer, should cement its place in the sub-district east-west finals with a win over arch rival Hoppers Crossing at Chirnside Park. Wins in the final few weeks of the season mean that Tim O’Brien and his charges are still in with a shot, though it will take a very good team to knock over flag favourite Williamstown. Hoppers Crossing would love to finish the season with a win, especially against the Tigers. Hogans Road will host the annual Hoppers Crossing past players day on Saturday with the usual barbecue and beverages and a reunion of the 1991-92 over-40s premiership side. Contact Darren Hellmann mhellmann@bigpond.com by Friday for catering reasons. ■ Hogans Road will also be the venue again this year for the annual Hoppers Crossing Sports Club and E.J. Whitten Foundation Car Show, which will be on Sunday, April 2. Last year the weather gods didn’t come to the party, but organisers are hoping a change of date to dry April might do the trick. There will be some amazing vehicles on display including muscle, antique and luxury cars. Entry for patrons will be via a gold coin with all proceeds going to the Whitten Foundation work into prostate cancer awareness and research. If you have a car you want to show, contact John Culhane on 0488 991 705 or johnculhane29@gmail.com ■ Some of Australia’s big-name golfers will walk the fairways of Werribee Park on Wednesday, March 15, when the club hosts the E-Z-GO PGA Legends Tour Pro Am. Peter Senior, Mike Clayton and Terry Price will be among the field of 53 professionals competing for the $20,000 purse. The club has sponsorship options available for local businesses to get involved. Call club captain Graham Roper (0403 437 349) or Irene Brogden (9742 1397).
Division 2 semi-finals (best of three) Sunshine v Williamstown Game 1 (Wednesday, 7.30pm) Melbourne Ballpark, Altona Game 2 (Saturday, 2pm) Barclay Reserve, Sunshine Game 3 (Sunday, 2pm) Greenwich Reserve, Williamstown Daniel Chircop will be Williamstown’s starting pitcher in game one of the semi-final series with minor premiers Sunshine tonight. Underdogs on the rise By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown Wolves managed a stunning turnaround to gatecrash the Baseball Victoria division 2 play-offs. Only a month ago, pencils were being sharpened for obituaries on their season, but the Wolves pulled themselves back from the precipice to reach the finals. Wolves’ player-coach Jarryd Rogers was impressed with the team’s never-say-die attitude. “We were out of the top four by about three and a half games,” Rogers recalled. “Everyone knew we had to win nearly every game after Christmas, and we almost did. “There were a few games that we were down by a few runs, and we came back to win knowing how important it was. “The character the players have shown these last nine games has been perfect. Everyone is pretty damn excited right now; we’re loving it.” Williamstown booked its place in summer league finals with a comfortable 8-2 win over Port Melbourne on the road on Saturday.
It was the result that meant the Wolves could hold off Doncaster in the race for fourth spot. “The last month and a half have been a bit of a rollercoaster,” Rogers said. “We were in and then we lost mid-week and thought we were eliminated. “Then we got back in today with the win.” Playing one-win Port Melbourne in the last round allowed Williamstown to manage its players. They held ace pitcher Daniel Chircop out of the game – he’s the scheduled starter for game one of the best-of-three semi-final series against minor premiers Sunshine tonight. None of the Wolves’ pitchers delivered more than two innings, so all will be fresh for a hectic finals series, which could include six games in two weeks, if they go the distance. “We didn’t have anyone pitching a long amount of time because we knew we’d most likely have a game this Wednesday,” Rogers said. “Every pitcher only threw two innings, so there was no real stand-out. “Collectively, all five of our pitchers, they did perfectly.”
Williamstown’s batters did some serious damage, but none more so than Aaron Green and Justin Gourlay. Green was voted player of the match for his part in sealing the win for the finals place. The Wolves go into the finals as underdogs because of their fourth ranking, but try telling that to Rogers. “We expect to win every game with the streak that we’re on now,” Rogers said. “We feel we’re more likely to win than lose. “We’re pretty well prepared, and everything has gone our way the last few weeks to get all our pitchers to come back. “Our preparation has been good and we’re expecting to come out on top two weeks from now.” In division 1, the Newport Rams closed out their season with a 3-2 loss to Springvale. The Rams finished fourth in the western conference with eight wins, three draws and 15 losses. In division 3, Footscray was eliminated in week one of the finals after going down 5-1 to St Kilda.
■ The WRFL will probably announce a redraw of the division 2 fixture this week on the back of Glenorden’s withdrawal. The new draw will present some challenges for those clubs who have been preparing for the year based on the original fixture. Local footy clubs are coming to terms with the implications of the points system and the salary cap, both of which might be the saviour of clubs such as Glenorden in the future. For me it has always been a pretty simple equation – don’t spend money you don’t have.

Pride, rather than points, pains finals-bound Altona Any time Altona loses to arch-rival Werribee in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, it hurts. As far as losses go in the grand scheme of this season, it was not the end of the world for the A’s to taste defeat in this one. Still, it was a hiccup the A’s would rather not have, considering the hot form they’ve been in with four wins on the trot, but it didn’t have a detrimental effect on their standing. They are still third on the ladder, despite the 50-run loss, and in a strong position to seal a home final. A’s captain-coach Adam Yates paid Werribee its dues after its successful defence of 241, bowling his side out for 191. “They clearly out-played us on both days,” Yates said. “It was a matter of a couple of blocks of cricket that let us down in the end. Werribee
got away to a reasonable start in their innings to be 0-40 and then we lost a couple of quick wickets before tea in our innings; so they’re probably the two phases of the game that’s cost us. They’re going to be a dangerous team come the pointy end of the season.” The biggest take away from the game for Altona was the performance of all-rounder David Kinsella, who carved out a determined 77 and took 4-59 off 18 overs. His recent batting form is comparable to the best in the competition. Ranked 11th in batting aggregate, the opener has 410 runs at 41, with the bulk of those runs coming in the season’s second half. “He’s been in really good form the past few weeks,” Yates said. “He’s a typical opening batsman, playing straight and really patient. He’s been a really good addition this season.”
If Altona had been asking for a bit more from Kinsella, in any area, it would be his bowling. But he came to the party on day one against Werribee with his best figures since his days as a Coburg player. “He’s one of the fittest blokes you’ll meet, and he does extra outside of the club,” Yates said. If Altona is to preserve its top-three spot and book a home final, it needs to stave off a challenge from Taylors Lakes in a one-day game away at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday. Elsewhere, Williamstown sealed the minor premiership with a 41-run win over Melton at the Williamstown Cricket Ground. Craig Sheedy and Daniel Popa took three wickets apiece as the Seagulls defended their 226 by bowling the visitors out for 185. Lance Jenkinson

Building time for Bulldogs
Hamish Winter-Irving was on fire with five wickets for Footscray Edgewater on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)
Deja vu for Doggies By Lance Jenkinson You could not blame Footscray Edgewater players if they thought, ‘oh no, not again’ as their Premier Cricket finals hopes again came down to the last match of the season. The Bulldogs have endured final round heartbreak in each of the past two seasons, both times when they thought they were in winning positions. Footscray Edgewater’s luck could be about to turn. The Bulldogs have not one paw, but three paws in the finals after producing a stunning first day performance against Geelong at the Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. The Dogs grabbed a 199-run first innings lead to set themselves up for an outright, which would guarantee a finals place. “If you were to write a script, it would’ve been pretty similar to that,” Bulldogs top-order batsman Dean Russ said. “We knew we had to win and we’ve been in that situation the past couple of years. The great thing is the destiny of playing finals is in our hands.” Footscray Edgewater leads by 180 runs and already has Geelong two down in its second
dig. Surely nothing can go wrong for the Bulldogs this time, can it? Russ has been around the block often enough to know that his side can’t afford to leave the door ajar for teams below them in the standings. As Russ sees it, the Bulldogs must go for an outright or they’ll be susceptible to the pain experienced at this stage of the past two seasons. “We need to win outright, and that takes control of everything,” Russ said. “We prefer not to have a ‘what if’ where you have to check the scores. It stops a Prahran or a Carlton getting in if they win outright after winning on the first day. “We’re in a good position. We’ve just got to take eight more wickets and then we can sing the song and hopefully play finals.” Footscray Edgewater opening bowler Hamish Winter-Irving created carnage for Geelong, the visitors perishing for just 57. Winter-Irving needed just nine overs for his 5-23. A front-line bowler, Winter-Irving has long been held back by nagging injuries, but with a free run at it for most of the season he’s now considered an elite talent in the competition. “He’s showing he’s a bona fide top opening bowler in the competition,” Russ added. “I
52 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MARCH 1, 2017
think a lot of people are taking note of that. He’s bowling good lengths, making batsmen play, and he’s able to swing it and do a bit off the seam. I must admit I enjoy watching him at first slip because I wouldn’t want to be facing him as an opening batsman.” Footscray Edgewater quickly picked off the 58 runs it needed to secure first innings points, doing so without losing a wicket as Greg Munro (51) and Matthew Underwood (21) put on 65. It was all about building a good lead before captain Dylan Kight declared the Dogs’ innings at 4-256, after half centuries to Kight (54no) and Russ (50), and an important 46 from Hayden Butterworth who was playing against his old club. The declaration came with seven overs left in the day. Footscray Edgewater made the most of them, further asserting its dominance with two late wickets. “To get them two down was fantastic,” Russ said. “It’s definitely not going to be easy to get the last eight wickets, so we’re going to have to bowl well next week.” Australian star Aaron Finch could be available for Geelong in the second week, which could spice up the game.
The Western Bulldogs have more to play for than merely pride in the remainder of the inaugural AFL Women’s season. The Bulldogs had the finals door slammed shut on them by Collingwood in a seven-point loss at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday, bringing to an end a difficult run of four home games to start the short seven-match season. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves is not happy his side has a record of one win and three losses. “Obviously, we’d rather be sitting here and be four-zip,” he said. “We’ve shown we can play really good footy in round one and we’ve come up against some really good teams.” The Bulldogs have been plagued by the same two issues for three weeks straight – they have been missing some of their top-end talent and missing a lot of shots on goal. Of a combined 32 shots from rounds two to four, the Bulldogs have converted just nine times. The Bulldogs will use the last three rounds to develop players, get a better understanding of the list and work on game plans that are still in their infancy. “It’s an ongoing plan so that the Bailey Hunts, the Ellyse Gambles, these girls can be here for the next 10 years,” Groves said. “So we’re about continual improvement. It’s giving them the confidence that you’re a Western Bulldogs player now. It’s bigger picture stuff, really.” The Western Bulldogs had only kicked one goal to three-quarter time against Collingwood, but showed plenty of fight in the last quarter to get to within seven points after goals to Ellie Blackburn and Kirsty Lamb. Lamb booted two goals for the game and showed her toughness with 14 disposals and seven tackles. The Bulldogs will face Carlton in an 11.35am start at Ikon Park on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson

Maidstone steps up as coach fosters big-time dreams Maidstone United will strut its stuff in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state leagues for the first time in the coming season. The man leading the charge for United is new coach Trevor Campbell, who has a proven track record after leading Upfield to promotion. Campbell wants to set United on the path to sustainable, long-term success. “When you go into a job, you’re not just going to go in there to stay in that league, you want to climb out of that league,” Campbell said. “You have to start from the bottom and work your way up to the top. “When I say the top, I’m talking about the big leagues – in another 10 years they might be in division one, which would be a great achievement.” Campbell knows his new club is not blessed with big dollar recruits, but instead with players who are there for the love of the game. But he can already see the potential that exists at United – potential that shone through
during an FFA Cup campaign that included a stirring win over Bundoora United in the qualifying round. Of course, a first season up in the state leagues is not going to be easy for United, but the step up might not be as big as initially thought. “The way I look at it, it’s just a matter of getting these guys to start believing in themselves,” Campbell said. “They’ve got to have the belief and trust in their teammates.” In these early days, Campbell will focus on reinforcing the basics to his squad. With assistant coach John Hall, he will roll out an easily understandable gameplan and build from there. One concern for Campbell is the general fitness of the Maidstone United players. They have just over a month until the start of the season proper and there is plenty of work to be done to get up to match fitness. “Some of these guys are so young and they’re not that fit,” the coach said.
“I’m not a believer of just running the boys – I’d rather ball work and run, where they don’t think about how much running they’re doing because they’ve got the ball in front of them. “I don’t know if it’s reverse psychology, but they’re puffing and that’s good – they’re enjoying it and putting in.” Since arriving from Ireland more than 40 years ago, Campbell has enjoyed a long association with FFV. The 62-year-old only officially hanged up the boots at the age of 46 – though that was after making a comeback. “I played some good soccer out here in my day,” Campbell said. “I’ve met some wonderful players over the years and that’s why you keep coming back.” It’s his passion for the game and courage to work through adversity that Campbell will be seeking to impart on his young squad. Sprinter on a Nitro high
(Damjan Janevski)
Top challenge for Woodsmen
By Lance Jenkinson A rising star of Western Athletics, sprinter Luke Stevens has been on a high since taking part in the inaugural Nitro Athletics, the new mixed team-based international program of sprint, distance, field and para-athletic events. Stevens could not have asked for a better event in the lead-up to all-important state and national championships. The 22-year-old got to represent Team Australia against some of the world’s greats, including best-of-the-best Usain Bolt. Stevens believes the Nitro Athletics format is here to stay. “Anything that’s on its maiden trial was always up for scepticism from the public,” he said. “It was better than the expectations, not only those I had for myself, but for everyone. “The positive thing that came out of it, the general public, which doesn’t speak about athletics much, they couldn’t stop talking about it … it was the excitement of wanting to watch the following night and talk about people wanting to be involved next year.” Stevens was one of two Western Athletics stars involved in the three-night blockbuster at Lakeside Stadium. The Tarneit resident even combined with fellow westie Morgan Mitchell in the 2 x 300m event. “It’s a pretty unique situation having 24 athletes nationwide and two of them coming from the same club,” Stevens said. “That’s quite a revelation in athletics locally. The committee is really proud they had two representatives and they’ve been a great support.” Stevens reckons Nitro Athletics was a success because it was taken seriously by big-name athletes from the outset. The World All Stars team came through to win the titles on the back of Bolt and co. “He’s one of a kind,” Stevens said. “He’s one of the greatest athletes we’ve ever seen in sport. “I think it was good to see that he was there not just for a show – he wanted to win and he made that public as well.” Stevens said the best part of Nitro Athletics for him was the interaction between athletes and the crowd. Athletes spilled onto the track to urge their teammates home and went out of their way to pose for selfies and sign autographs for the crowd that packed the stadium. “Some of the stuff the athletes were doing on the side … you wouldn’t typically do that,” Stevens said. “It got the crowd more involved – they were standing up cheering, not only Team Australia, but even some of the well known athletes. “There wasn’t an empty seat on the last night. “It felt like you were in a jam-packed stadium, so the athletes couldn’t help but get involved with the spectators.”
Coach Trevor Campbell is excited by the challenges at Maidstone United.
For Spotswood, the last round in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s senior division is all about defending top spot. The Woodsmen are in a commanding position after day one of their two-day bout with Airport West-St Christophers at Donald McLean Reserve. The West Saints were restricted to 183 off 75.3 overs after the Woodsmen bowlers put the clamps on their scoring for much of the day. Matt Leddin (3-20), Jeremy Brown (2-24) and Gene Maurice (2-31) snared multiple wickets. Spotswood batted for four overs before stumps to finish on 0-3. Yarraville Club made an imposing 9-284 away to Strathmore at the Syd McGain Oval. The third-placed Clubbers are still in with a shot of a home semi-final, but need one of Spotswood or Greenvale to lose this Saturday. In north-west division, Seddon, looking to keep fourth spot, made a flying start with 8-274 against Altona North. John Taylor was superb for the Dockers with 116 not out, including 15 fours. After the fanfare of Nitro Athletics, it was back to reality for Stevens, preparing for his most important month or so on the track, starting with state championships and culminating in the nationals in Sydney in late March. On the horizon also is the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and Stevens would be lying if he didn’t say it is on his mind. But there is plenty of work to be done before he can dream of the Gold Coast starters’ blocks next year.
“I’ve got some big competitions coming up,” Stevens said. “I’ve just got to train hard, race well and do the best I can. “I think I’ve already qualified [for the nationals], but that’s irrelevant. “Going forward, you’ve just got to make sure you’re well prepared, make sure you’re in the best possible shape and treat every athlete you come up against with respect, knowing they’re going to do the best they can. “Hopefully, in the nationals, I’m in the best shape that I can be.”
Altona North was knocked out of the FFA Cup in the first round in a drama-filled game against Northern Falcons at Duane Reserve on Saturday. There were 12 goals scored, with the Falcons emerging 8-4 winners after extra time and four red cards, with both sides finishing with nine men. Falcons striker Robert Canzoneri had the final say, scoring all of his four goals in extra time. In other matches, Laverton Park went down to Lara United 1-0, Melbourne City lost 2-1 to Dandenong Warriors and Maidstone United lost 4-3 on penalties to White Star Dandenong. The second round of the FFA Cup was drawn on Monday. The match-up of most interest to Hobsons Bay football fans will be Altona City’s clash with Williamstown at Kim Reserve on Saturday evening.
