The former Don Smallgoods site at Altona North is set to be redeveloped as housing for as many as 7000 people. The 66-hectare site, fronting Blackshaws Road and bounded by Kyle Road, New Street and the West Gate Freeway, is half the size of Melbourne’s CBD. Hobsons Bay council received an application to rezone the former industrial site from a private landholders’ consortium that owns 82 per cent of what is known as precinct 15. The application was facilitated by the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA), the government body that oversees planning. At last week’s council meeting, fears were raised that if councillors did not agree to go ahead with the rezoning, the government would take control and the council would lose any say in reshaping the site. The rezoning proposes developments up to six storeys high, capped at 3000 dwellings. If the development proceeds as proposed, and meets height and density requirements, residents will have no right to appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Concerns were raised by councillors – even those who said they felt obligated to vote for the amendment so as to avoid losing all control of the site. Concerns centred on the lack of infrastructure to accommodate such an influx of people and cars. Councillors Michael Grech and Tony Briffa voted against the rezoning. Cr Briffa said it was a difficult decision because the state government would develop the land regardless. “There isn’t enough infrastructure around the area to withstand this volume of houses, of people, of cars, of traffic and that’s the issue.” Cr Peter Hemphill said he had similar concerns. “When you look at the 3000 houses proposed, that’s equivalent to all the homes currently in Spotswood, South Kingsville and west Newport north of Mason Street combined,” he said. He said 7000 residents represented about eight per cent of Hobsons Bay’s population, but accounted for about an extra 33 per cent in that immediate area. “The VPA says it will have minimal impact on our road system, ” Cr Hemphill said. “I don’t believe that one iota.”

Mixed response to homeless plan By Benjamin Millar A chorus of concern is building against a project which will provide housing to the homeless in Footscray and Maidstone. Not-for-profit agency Launch Housing is seeking to provide 57 new relocatable one-bedroom townhouses across nine VicRoads-owned land parcels along a twokilometre stretch of Ballarat Road. While some residents have thrown their support behind the $5 million proposal, others fear the project provides too little parking and poor waste disposal, while it could devalue

surrounding properties and have an unwelcome social impact. A neighbouring resident, who asked not to be named, said his concerns were around violence and drugs – issues which have been cited in an anonymous letterbox drop in the area. “No matter how much Launch Housing tries to paper over the community’s concern with the social issues these developments represent, they are real and frightening,” he said. “To congregate 57 of these houses in such a small radius, in a tiny pocket of Footscray, is poor and irresponsible planning by the council and Launch Housing.”

Another objector said the plans were deceptive, with too little parking, and Footscray already had a large amount of public housing. “We residents feel that we are part of a social experiment,” the objector added. “We are sure that some homeless people are perfectly nice people who have fallen on hard times, but we are also not naive to the fact that many homeless people have issues with drugs, alcohol, mental illness and criminal activity.” A third objector said the staggered way individual properties were revealed left residents unable to understand the complete picture until some permits had already been

Concert shut down by wasps A swarm of wasps has taken up residence in Altona Meadows Community Park, causing the cancellation of a public concert and family picnic. The hairy flower wasp, whose scientific name is either scolia soror or campsomeris, is native to Australia and useful for controlling other insect populations. The wasps are completely docile, but the current swarm in Altona Meadows may cause inconvenience. Hobsons Bay council, which runs the annual Summer Sounds outdoor music concert series, cancelled a family picnic and concert planned at the Trafalgar Avenue park on Friday. Hobsons Bay strategic development acting director Kathleen McClusky said signage to alert the public to the wasps had been erected in the park. “There are approximately 150 wasps that are actually within the park,” she said. “Obviously, they’re native so we wouldn’t want to kill them. “There will be further correspondence between the conservation team and councillors. “It’s likely that the wasps will be there for at least until the end of March.” She said the cancelled Altona Meadows event had been rescheculed for March 3 at Laverton’s McCormack Park. Families are being encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy wasp-free performances by Kylie Cooper and the Pearly Shells Hot 4 from 5-7pm. It will be the last concert in this year’s series. Seddon chef Ashley Davis is licking his lips at the array of fine dining feasts about to hit the western suburbs. Cuisines from across the globe will be in the spotlight through 15 special events during the 10-day Eat Drink Westside program (March 31 to April 9), part of the 25th anniversary of the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. As Copper Pot’s owner and executive chef, Mr Davis is relishing the chance to add his own touch to the event by taking diners on a gastronomic road trip across Europe, capturing iconic dishes and classic wines of France, Italy, Spain and Germany. “Quality food has spread into the suburbs and into the regions; it’s not just contained to the city any more,” he said. A ‘Sunshine boy’ who took London restaurant Hélène Darroze to the coveted Michelin two-star level, Mr Davis is looking forward to taking adventurous diners on a pan-European food adventure studded with special treats all the way. “We will be putting on the sort of wines that people might only try once in their life,” he said. “It’s about celebrating exciting food and wine right here in the western suburbs.” Other events bringing the world to the west at the festival include an Ethiopian celebration with drumming; traditional coffee and injera at Konjo; a Balinese celebratory feast at Spice Bazaar Cooking School; The Plough’s ‘Pig, Pots and Pinots’; and an afternoon of local food and drinks at Up in Smoke. T Cavallaro & Sons will celebrate 60 years of Sicilian baking; Lentil as Anything will host a ‘Hotter Than Anything’ spicy vegan chilli con carne event; and ‘Footscray Fusion’ will be on show at Littlefoot Bar. Farther afield, events will include a four-course progressive dinner through Sunshine and a produce-driven four-course lunch matched with wines at Shadowfax Winery. passed. One resident complained that the sites would have the appearance of trailer camps. A Launch Housing spokeswoman said parking concerns were being addressed by planning experts, while regular inspections would be made to ensure small mezzanine storage spaces were not being used for accommodation. The spokeswoman said Launch Housing had already developed projects of this scale and had evidence that they worked well. Three of the sites have received the approval of Maribyrnong council, while six remain under consideration.

Rebuild plan for childcare centre By Benjamin Millar The Church Street Children’s Centre in West Footscray may be demolished and rebuilt from scratch at a cost close to $4 million. Maribyrnong council would partly offset the cost by selling the Footscray site of the former Empire Early Learning Centre, which closed in December despite the protest of parents. A report due to be considered at last night’s council meeting recommended demolishing the existing building at Church Street and preparing the site for a new centre.

The centre was originally slated for a redevelopment costing less than $2 million and due to be completed by last month. But the project has languished since the middle of last year when builders discovered “serious structural design issues”. Independent investigations conducted for the council concluded that “the preferred approach is to demolish the existing structure in its entirety”, increase capacity, improve parking, staff and storage areas and focus on environmentally sustainable design. “The design will no longer be constrained by the existing building footprint and can

therefore explore new innovative solutions,” the report stated. The new build, estimated to cost between $3.8 million and $4.4 million, would take until the end of next year to complete. Families relocated to the Maribyrnong Community Centre last July would remain there until the start of 2018. Demolition would begin next month, followed by the drawing up of a new concept design and further cost estimates. The existing centre is housed in a 1940s building with a 1980s extension. A separate report to last night’s council

meeting recommended the new centre be partly funded by the sale of the now-vacant childcare centre at 8 Empire Street. The report stated the property has no future use to the community. “The site is assessed as having no current community utilisation, assessed as being in a location which has minimal community exposure, a small land area and is not suitable for development for any current or foreseeable future community use. It is recommended that revenue from this sale be utilised for the development of the early-years site at 47 Church Street, West Footscray.”

Lifelong Western Bulldogs tragic David Porter was all smiles last week as he took hold of the AFL premiership cup. The 57-year-old is a well-known face among Bulldogs fans, having led the club’s cheer squad for more than two decades through thick and thin. The club life member is so committed to his beloved Doggies he attended 499 consecutive home and away games from 1990, missing only his milestone 500th a few years ago due to a broken foot. Born in Footscray Hospital, Mr Porter has been back in the hospital since December after having his left leg amputated due to diabetes complications. He said getting his hands on the Bulldogs’ drought-breaking premiership trophy during its trip to the hospital on Thursday was a big thrill.

Ted’s winning formula

Collingwood and competed in the World Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Auckland. Mr Powell has no plans for retirement.

2017

Industrial chemist Ted Powell celebrated his 80th birthday on Tuesday by opening a new warehouse in Altona. The chief executive of Advance Chemicals started manufacturing cleaning chemicals in Altona in 1977 after the closure of the Nugget factory in Williamstown, where he had worked 14 years. “At that stage, I was finding it difficult to find a job,” he said. “I ended up buying a run-down chemical company which was losing $1000 per month and I rented a small factoryette in Altona. By cutting back on staff, I was able to put the company on a profitable basis right from the word go.” His business, which started with a modest staff of two, has grown to export to 30 countries. Part of the reason he started his own business was to disprove those who told him he had no management potential because of a stutter he’d had since age five. “I’ve been stuttering all my life and it’s probably only in recent years that I’ve been able to get reasonable control of my stuttering as part of being in Toastmasters,” he said. An active member of Toastmasters at Williamstown and Werribee, Mr Powell said a highlight of his public speaking was becoming a finalist in a humourous speech competition. Two years ago, Mr Powell underwent open-heart surgery and had a five-way bypass operation. He was back at work 12 days later but realised he had to make some changes. He switched to a low-cholesterol and mostly vegetarian diet. He said this enabled him to throw away the blood pressure tablets he’d been on for 45 years. “I’m working about 50 hours per week and

An iconic Footscray wharf remains in disrepair 12 months after being closed to the public. Henderson House Landing has been closed to vessel and pedestrian traffic since last February following the partial collapse of the deck. Parks Victoria erected fencing as it assessed the damage and investigated whether it would repair or demolish the landing, which is on the bank of the Maribyrnong River behind the Footscray Community Arts Centre. Last June, about 100 people attended a rally organised by the Footscray Riverside Action Group (FRAG), which urged the government to resist demolishing the partially collapsed wharf. More than 200 people signed an online petition calling on Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio to intervene. FRAG member Elwyn Davies said the group was frustrated by lack of action by Parks Victoria or the state government. Maribyrnong council director of planning services Nigel Higgins said the council had sought a commitment from Parks Victoria for the repair of the landing, most recently last month. A Parks Victoria spokesman said engineers had assessed the structure and options were being explored to repair it. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said she understands frustrations at the apparent inaction, but works are being carefully considered. Benjamin Millar

Council to trial off-leash dog ban By Goya Dmytryshchak Dog owners will be banned from letting their dogs run off-leash on Laverton Park’s five sportsgrounds and AB Shaw Reserve playground in Altona Meadows ahead of a municipality-wide review that includes Altona Dog Beach. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said a trial at Altona Meadows was being implemented after instances of dogs rushing at children and complaints from cricket and football clubs. The council is also reviewing other dog off-leash areas that include sportsgrounds or playgrounds.

“A popular one that people would be aware of is PA Burns Reserve down near the dog beach where we have a cricket ground immediately adjacent to our dog off-leash beach zone, which causes some issues as well,” Cr Gates said. Laverton Cricket Club president Paul Smith said some dog owners showed complete disregard for others at Laverton Park and AB Shaw Reserve. “A young girl was walking across the main ground and a guy pulled up at the carpark and let three of his dogs off. One of them chased her across the ground,” he said. “And then we’ve had kids knocked over at the playground.

“You wouldn’t believe the number of confrontations I’ve had when I’ve approached people to remove their dogs.” He said one cricket match was cancelled due to wicket damage caused by a dog, while others had been delayed because of dog droppings. “We’ve had games that have started 40 minutes late because sides wouldn’t play until all the dog droppings were picked up,” Mr Smith said. “We’ve actually had guys land in it.” Cr Gates said while removing the playing fields from the dog off-leash zone, there is still plenty of space for pet owners to run their dogs.

Ski patrol closer to home Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club will house two jet skis to patrol Port Phillip Bay after receiving a $25,000 state government grant. The club, which has about 1100 members, hosts the Victorian Open Water Championships and its lifesavers will patrol this month’s Big Bay Swim from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan visited the club last Friday after announcing the awarding of funds under the emergency services volunteer sustainability grants scheme. “The Willy Life Saving Club continues to work hard to protect our community,” he said. “I’ve no doubt this grant will assist the club with the invaluable work it does.” Club president Matt McCarroll said Life Saving Victoria’s two jet skis were currently housed at Pier 35 in Port Melbourne.

“They travel from Pier 35 at 10 knots an hour up the river to patrol the bay between Point Cook and Brighton, and those jet skis are on patrol the whole time [with] paid life guards,” Mr McCarroll said. “So, we said, why don’t you house them at Williamstown? “It’s right in between all those points. You won’t have to travel all the way up the river and we’d be happy to man them.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Council rating not all bad By Benjamin Millar Satisfaction with Maribyrnong council has dropped to its second lowest level in five years, the annual community survey reveals. The 2016 survey shows the community’s level of satisfaction with the council’s performance slipping from the 2015 average score of 6.64 out of 10 to 6.50, still above the 2014 score of 6.14. The result corresponds to a good rating and remains above the long-term average of 6.43 since 2004. The survey involved face-to-face interviews with 800 randomly selected households during last August and September.

It found satisfaction increased for 22 of the 34 council services and facilities, but declined for the remaining 12. Weekly waste services, local libraries and sports ovals were rated as excellent. But satisfaction with the planning approvals process was generally rated at poor or very poor. The most significant change was a drop in satisfaction with customer service from 7.67 to 7.21. Respondents were least satisfied with parking enforcement, public toilets, maintenance of Footscray CBD, footpath upkeep and repairs, and traffic management. Satisfaction with council’s efforts in relation to the issues of trucks and freight was rated as ‘poor’, declining from 6.44 to 5.93. Childcare and services for seniors were the most commonly identified health and community services that could not be adequately accessed locally. Respondents agreed graffiti was a problem, but disagreed that property owners should clean it up. Almost 10 per cent of respondents had no home internet connection, a figure that rose to 20 per cent at Braybrook.

RSL building plan dropped Grocon has officially withdrawn its planning application to replace the Williamstown RSL with a five-storey apartment block and cafe. Star Weekly reported on Tuesday last week that the Save Williamstown lobby group had vowed to lodge mass objections to the proposed development. RSL Victoria president Rob Webster said on Thursday the plan had been withdrawn at the Williamstown subbranch’s request. The Williamstown RSL Club closed on January 3 because of a $3.5 million debt. The club’s land, at the corner of Ferguson Street and Melbourne Road, was gifted to returned Diggers and the community for the RSL sub-branch in 1919. Mr Webster said the state branch’s sole focus was the future viability of the Williamstown sub-branch. The branch had supported the Grocon proposal on the basis that it proved to be the best possible outcome for the Williamstown RSL sub-branch and the league in the Hobsons Bay region, Mr Webster said. “The state branch was also committed to retaining a Williamstown RSL subbranch presence in the original proposed redevelopment. Given the planning restrictions and challenges on the site, that proposal proved unviable. The state branch has continued to support the Williamstown RSL committee … and now supports the actions taken by Grocon in withdrawing the planning application.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Friends and family joined Williamstown stalwart Hylda Kennedy to celebrate a magic milestone late last year. Born in the Williamstown home of her parents, Arthur William Kennedy and Francis Edwards, in October 1916, Hylda Mary Catherine Kennedy celebrated her 100th birthday with a special lunch. The adventurous centenarian also marked the milestone by booking a joy flight with Melbourne Seaplanes, inviting good friend Ella Bambery, a sprightly 99-year-old she befriended in their school days. From there, it was on to Stott’s Colleges to study business, where she excelled, moving on to a long career of secretarial work, before retiring at age 73 to care for her oldest son, who was suffering from MS. Hylda still resides in the Williamstown family home she purchased before she was married. Benjamin Millar

MY PLACE Williamstown resident Daniel Cooper is a firefighter stationed at Newport. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

We have lived in Williamstown just over seven years and I have been based at Newport fire station on and off for the last five years. What do you like most about Williamstown? It’s a beautiful area to live, having the beach only a five-minute walk one direction and plenty of parks and cafes the other. What would you change? As a whole, I wouldn’t change much about Williamstown. I love the old character and heritage that makes it such a great spot to live. Maybe a good Mexican restaurant – everybody loves tacos. Tell me about a call-out that has stood out for you. Do you feel your work has made an impact? I wouldn’t say there is one job that stands out for me because we go to such a variety of calls – from structure fires to car accidents, hazardous chemical spills, rescues and emergency medical response. No job is quite like the next. I do feel that we make a difference to the community and

they are always appreciative of the work that we do. If you had visitors to Williamstown, where would you take them to show off your suburb? I think Williamstown is best explored by foot. I would grab a coffee and head down through the Williamstown Botanic Gardens to the beach. A great way to spend the day. What’s your favourite cafe/eatery? I’d have to say Mezmez in Ferguson Street – that’s our favourite place for a morning coffee. What’s the best thing about your job? I love the work-life balance, the people I work with – every day is unpredictable. Shift work can be challenging, but I wouldn’t have it any other way, especially with a young family. It means more time to spend with ones you love. What would people be surprised to know about you?

(Dennis Manktelow)

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE The trains don’t run; what do you do? Kenny Weir finds food. “I’ve never seen so many depressed people in one place!” That’s the desolate text I receive from Bennie. He’s stranded in Laverton and the trains are not running. Neither he, nor anyone else it seems, knows what is going on. He directs me to pick him up at Newport – prematurely as it turns out, but I get the chance to scope out the Hall Street shops – including the Malaysian place I’d heard about. It’s small and tidy – not much more than a take-away, really, with one tall and small table and a bunch of counter/window stools. Still, something about the place feels just right and our stay-at-home dinner options are happily jettisoned for another night … once the tricky transport logistics are finally resolved at Footscray station, it’s back to Newport we head. The Hawkers Lane menu covers much familiar territory, from curry puffs (including a sardine option) and rotis, through to noodles (wok, wet and soup), one-person rice dishes and full-serve mains, such as beef rendang and Nyonya fish curry. This place is brought to us by the same team that operates Wok Noodle at Seddon. Rotis can be served plain or with the likes of peanut sauce, beef rendang and chicken curry, or as wraps. Our fine roti with potato curry ($9) is all good, though the curry is rather more runny than we’d like – a more sticky gravy that sticks to the flat bread would be just the ticket. Bennie makes quick work of his mee goreng

HAWKERS LANE Address: 12 Hall Street, Newport Phone: 9391 0611 ($12.50). It’s a solid, well-cooked outing. My chicken kari laksa ($15) is a variation on regular chicken laksa. The curry sauce blends with the laksa soup to create a very flavoursome brew, while the chicken pieces are heftier and much tastier than the diced or shredded chook routinely found in laksas. For veg, there’s just a single, longish chunk of eggplant – no beans or broccoli or the like. But that matters not, as the chicken, the tofu, two halves of golden boiled egg and mix of two curry gravies combine with the noodles and bean sprouts to produce a top-notch laksa. Hawkers Lane is a real find. The locals must be thrilled. The bare-bones set-up means eating in feels more like just grabbing a quick, unfussy bite, and less like going through the whole restaurant ritual. Yet the service and food quality shine, and we’ll be back for more. Hawkers Lane is a cash-only operation, does not do deliveries and is closed on Sundays. This Yarraville stunner’s renovation means it has everything a pitch-perfect contemporary residence should. The front yard is landscaped, creating a pretty-as-a-picture street presence. The California bungalow facade has been refreshed. Through the Craftsman-style front door is an ocean of hardwood floorboards. Three bedrooms are at the front of the house, the main with obligatory en suite and walk-in wardrobe. Open plan living/dining features a concealed, contemporary study space, beautiful kitchen with hardwood benchtops and circular recessed stainless-steel twin sinks. Twin stacking doors open to the yard, where there’s plenty of space for children to play. A period shed adds a sense of charm to the outlook. Ducted heating, evaporative cooling and a ducted vacuum have been added. This is a gorgeous house with nothing to be done.

Ideally located opposite a reserve within a 10-minute walk of Spotswood station and the Hudsons Road village scene, this house – in the same family since 1951 – is on a corner block of about 705 square metres. This allows scope for extension or development (council permitting) should that be your bent. The three fitted bedrooms run down the western side, with a good-sized bathroom, separate toilet and laundry nearby. A spacious, L-shaped lounge-dining room has a brick fireplace framing a gas heater, and a separate family room opens onto the rear deck. Between these rooms, the kitchen has ’80s appeal, with timber finishes, a pantry and electric oven. The landscaped backyard has a double garage – accessed via the side street – which is flanked by a carport and a leafy, covered area. Split-systems and a 2500-litre water tank are inclusions.

A perfect introduction into Williamstown living, “Alberta” has been renovated to maximise outdoor living spaces and open up rooms creating a flow that makes this a great family residence. A traditional living room with fireplace is cosy and just as you’d expect – large, well-proportioned and inviting. The subway-tiled white splashback instantly updates the high-spec kitchen leading to a dining area with floorboards. There’s a family living zone here opening to a yard with undercover, decked barbecue area with bar fridge. Both bedrooms have original fireplaces and all rooms feature beautiful Victorian features such as 22mm skirting boards and larger cornices. The spacious main bathroom has a huge shower, separate bath and stone-top contemporary vanity. A wide hallway and high ceilings creae the open, homely mood these properties are loved for.

If style, proximity to transport and good shopping, and mid-century architecture is on your check list, then look no further. This fantastic clinker brick has had a recent renovation that retains its art deco influences. New windows have gone in throughout, lacquered to show the integrity of solid timber frames. Clean lines of the contemporary kitchen flow into the kitchen meals area, where reconditioned floorboards are a feature. New carpet lays from the living zone to both bedrooms. Hipster styling modernises the 5.4 x 4-metre entertainment area. Off-street parking is at the back with remote-controlled rear access a fantastic feature, as is attic storage, ducted heating and air-conditioning. Established gardens feature deciduous English trees and shrubs along the 13 metre frontage.

Price: $1.2 million – $1.3 million Auction: March 4 at 11.30am

Imagine stepping off the evening train at Seddon station, walking past great cafes and stores towards your new house at 88 Queensville Street … the sun is setting, you open the gate and your impeccably renovated inner-city Edwardian awaits. Sensor lights activate, you are welcomed home. White roses line a picket fence and the garden path leads you onto the porch, where custom-built cedar sash windows and stained timber boards create a warm entrance. The first bedroom to your left has a re-conditioned fireplace and built-in

wardrobe – sharing a minimalist design aesthetic that is seen throughout. The main bedroom to the right has a large walk-in wardrobe. Both front rooms have beautifully dressed sash windows and plush carpet. Down the inviting hallway, the third bedroom is to the left. White 25mm skirting boards frame all rooms. Juxtaposed against 22mm-wide engineered oak floorboards, these are a stunning design choice. Turn right for the standout main bathroom – Italian Carrara hand-cut marble slabs are featured in the frameless oversized shower, the same atop the vanity.

A clawfoot bath ticks yet another must-have in a perfectly appointed modern take on the period home. The same slab-cut marble is used as a splashback in the powder room, large laundry (featuring loads of floor-to-ceiling storage) and the fantastic living-dining zone, where the hard work of this husband-and-wife renovation team really shows. Under a pitched ceiling, the French provincial-inspired kitchen is worthy of Pinterest – discover hidden spice racks behind hand-turned wood florets, Carrara marble benchtops, a stainless-steel

rectangular sink and, as befits the overall tone, a Smeg dishwasher and 900mm oven with six-burner cooktop. The large living hub is truly picture perfect. The outdoor covered entertainment area features a downlit, wood-panelled ceiling. Sealed exposed aggregate keeps the car space and courtyard low maintenance and stylish. This great space is accessed via hardwood-framed stacker doors. A remote-controlled rear gate and attic storage add to the consistently high-end approach that has left no stone unturned. Footscray 63A Victoria Street Re-define A Local Landmark Currently configured as shop-front and office proportions behind a traditional Victorian profile, this dual level property represents a unique opportunity for re-invention and residential development, STCA in a location that’s so central to every element of Footscray. To be sold separately, but clearly enhanced by the parallel potential of neighboring number 65, the scope for combining both properties is complemented by options to make the most of second frontage to Buckley Street and immediate proximity to trams, cafes, shopping options and the Victoria University campus. One of Footscray’s most prominent sites - and one of the area’s few remaining opportunities to suggest such a richly rewarding future.

Footscray 65 Victoria Street A Corner That Inspires Creativity Capture one of Footscray’s most prominent, pivotal corner properties and plan a dynamic development, STCA, that will make a major contribution to the area’s ongoing evolution. As inner city living becomes more highly prized and city edge sites are hugely sought after this iconic address is a stand out in terms of both position and potential. At present, a classical Victorian facade conceals a range of commercial spaces including a generous, flexible shop-front and several work-shops and offices that represent the ultimate in ‘blank canvas’ possibilities. To the rear, outdoor dimensions and substantial second frontage to Buckley Street add to the significance of the opportunity to re-define this local landmark - to be sold separately, with the option to acquire neighboring number 63A.

51 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 22, 2017

SPORT Tiger captain sets Altona tough run chase Altona will have to produce its best with the bat on day two in order to beat western rivals Werribee and retain the Paul Jenkins Shield. The A’s have been set a victory target of 242 after Tigers captain Tim O’Brien got off the leash with 102 to steer the visitors to a commanding total in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Frank Kirk Oval on Saturday. David Kinsella was Altona’s most damaging weapon with the ball, taking 4-59 off 18 overs, including the scalp of O’Brien. Spinners Adam Yates (2-39) and Stefan Sidari (2-57) continued their good form for the A’s. Gunning for an eighth consecutive win, Williamstown has some work to do against Melton at the Williamstown Cricket Ground. The Seagulls produced 226 with middle-order batsmen Matthew Dervan (61) and Matthew Twentyman (44) providing the backbone. Yarraville restricted Endeavour Hills to 183 with spinners Akshat Buch (3-45) and Nathan Allen (3-37) combining for six wickets.

David Kinsella snared four wickets for Altona. (Damjan Janevski)

In Premier Cricket, Footscray Edgewater is clinging to a spot in the top eight heading into the final round. The Bulldogs blew a massive chance to create a bigger gap, losing to top side Camberwell Magpies by 20 runs in a low-scoring game at the Camberwell Sports Ground on Saturday.

Chasing Camberwell’s 172, the Bulldogs started the day behind the eight-ball at 8-110, but a gutsy ninth wicket stand by Hamish Winter-Irving (18no) and Jonah Koch (19) gave them a real sniff. Once that partnership was broken with Koch’s dismissal, No.11 Jeremy Hart could not stick around for long enough with Winter-Irving, and the Bulldogs exited for 152. The rest of the day was glorified batting practice for Camberwell, with the hosts posting 172, identical to their first innings. Hart (3-72), Winter-Irving (2-36) and Lucas Dredge (2-22) gave their season bowling figures a boost. It will all come down to the final round for Footscray Edgewater. If the Bulldogs can beat Geelong in the final two-dayer at Merv Hughes Oval, they should play in the finals, but lose and they will have to rely on other results to go their way. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The decision of the Glenorden Football Club to not field senior teams in 2017 is disappointing, but probably the most sensible in the circumstances. The Hawks have become the latest victim of a footy landscape based on greed. Clubs crave success, so the laws of logic are suspended and chaos rules. I know those in power are working towards fielding teams in 2018. My concern is that it won’t happen – not because they won’t be trying, but more because the circumstances will not be conducive. I will be interested to see the reaction of the WRFL (which was not public at the time of writing). There are hard decisions to be made regarding the 2017 draw. ■ The Jalna Big Bay Swim takes place this Sunday from Port Melbourne to Williamstown. The 3.2-kilometre swim is open to all swimmers and you can enter from 7am on the day at Sandridge Lifesaving Club in Port Melbourne. The swim will start at 9am. If the idea of the swim does not appeal, there will be plenty of other activities to enjoy at the Big Bay Festival in Williamstown. Money raised from the swim will go towards funding a youth leadership camp for 80 young adults run by the Les Twentyman Foundation and the Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand. Details: bigbayswim.com.au ■ Wasn’t it great to see Bobby Murphy running around on the ground in the red, white and blue last weekend? It has been a long road back for the skipper. Bobby and Stewart Crameri are effectively like new recruits for the Dogs, while Travis Cloke is looking good. Bulldog banner man Danny McGinlay has been in scintillating form with his banner slogans for both teams. Danny has his own show at the Comedy Festival – details at dannymcginlay.com or his Facebook page.

Altona back in big league By Lance Jenkinson Altona will take that giant leap from Lacrosse Victoria’s division one to state league this year. The Vikings have not played in the top-flight since 2010, but are ready to mix it with Victoria’s elite once again. “After the [premiership] win last year in divvy one, we thought now would be a good time,” Vikings’ president Bernard McDonald said. “We’ve got the right mix of seniors and juniors, and they’re at the right age, most of them in their prime, so now is a better time than any.” The last time Altona was in the premier competition, it had a talented but ageing player roster. It took the best part of seven years to totally replenish the stocks and get the collective to state league level. This team is arguably more talented and in a better age bracket for a sustained run of success.

“In 2010, it was a very old group, and a lot of them were at the stage of retiring,” McDonald said. “The group that we’ve got now are in the prime age, between 20 and 30 the majority of them. “We have a big lump of them who are representative players, especially the juniors, so I think we’ll do a lot better than we did last time. There’s a lot of talent there.” A major asset for Altona is left-handed attacker Campbell Mackinnon. While away on representative duty, Mackinnon got to work alongside the best players in state league, and felt that his side would be able to compete with the big boys. “He played in the senior Victorian side last time when they went to Perth,” McDonald said. “Since he’s come back from that, he said I’ve seen the best and I think we’re there … so he’s one of the guys we sort of based our decision on as well.” Mackinnon has been a star of division one for

Altona in recent seasons, consistently winning best and fairest awards. Mackinnon and brother Lachlan, an Australian indoor lacrosse representative, could hold the keys to success for the Vikings. Altona will also be able to take advantage of a rule permitting it to play three imports. The Vikings are already in discussions with three Americans for this season and a US-based coach to take over from Mark Lewer in 2018. “Originally we were going to go up next year, but we decided that we can’t really plan if we don’t know what to plan for, or what we need to work on,” McDonald said. “We figured that we’ll go up there and work out what they can do, and find out what we need to work on to become competitive. “With him coming out this year, it’s better that he can see us in state league and see what we need to work on this year, rather than coming out next year and starting again … so it will give us a head start for 2018.”

Woodsmen claim top spot Spotswood is the new front-runner in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Woodsmen have been chipping away all summer in their bid to grab the No. 1 ranking. It finally happened with a 40-run victory over long-time leader Yarraville Club at Walker Oval on Saturday. The Clubbers tumbled to third. Spotswood, set a target of 198 for victory when play resumed on the second day, got the runs comfortably seven down, with skipper Jeremy Brown leading the way with 81. All-rounder Gene Maurice capped off a fine performance for the Woodsmen with 54 to go with 3-51. Spotswood can seal top spot for the finals with a win over Airport West-St Chrostophers in the last home-and-away game at Donald McLean Reserve, starting on Saturday.

Yarraville Club is still in the hunt for a top-two finish. The Clubbers need to beat Strathmore and hope other results go their way. In north-west division, Druids have rolled to a sixth straight win, thrashing Keilor Park outright at Shorten Reserve. The second-placed Druids posted 9-224 in response to Keilor Park’s first-innings 115. The Parkers were bowled out a second time for 94. Footscray United has tasted success for the first time this summer, downing Laverton by seven runs in a thriller. Mohammed Pardesi was the star for the Bulldogs, following up his 4-60 with 52 in the successful chase. Domenic Di Guglielmo took 5-38 to lead Altona North to an 82-run win over PEGS, while Tom Kriebardis helped himself to 6-45 to inspire Seddon’s 65-run win over St Albans.

Last chance for outplayed Dogs By Lance Jenkinson Western Bulldogs coach Paul Groves is not ready to concede his team’s AFL Women’s flag chances are over just yet. The Bulldogs have dug a massive hole for themselves, losing consecutive games to be 1-2 for the season. In a short seven-game season with only two of eight teams qualifying for the grand final, one more loss is likely to consign the Bulldogs to the scrap heap for 2017. “Our losses haven’t been by huge margins,” Groves said after Saturday’s 14-point loss to Melbourne at the Victoria University Whitten Oval. If we can get a bit of momentum and some wins on the board, a couple of big wins, potentially with two losses you can still make it. “Two losses isn’t ideal. I certainly would rather be 2-1 or 3-0, but we spoke to the girls, kept it pretty positive and are just looking to bounce back. The talent is in my squad, so we can certainly have a crack at it.” The first matter of urgency for the Bulldogs is making a return to the winners’ list. The Bulldogs have been outplayed by Adelaide and Melbourne on their home turf in the past fortnight and face a must-win game back at the Whitten Oval on Saturday night. An issue for Groves is the unbalanced look of the Bulldogs line-up in the past two games.

A handful of players, led by ball magnets Emma Kearney and Ellie Blackburn, have been dominant, but too many players have shown just flashes, failing to produce four-quarter performances. “They’re bloody good players, both supercompetitors,” Groves said of Kearney and Blackburn, who both amassed over 25 disposals on Saturday. “They sort of fight and get even better when the chips are down. We’ve got a lot of ability in our squad; we’re just not seeing the impact from a lot of the girls at different stages.” Lauren Spark read the play better than most and was outstanding in the aerial duels across half back for the Bulldogs. Hannah Scott was resolute defensively and damaging with ball in hand, while Kirsty Lamb was willing to throw her body on the line. Another 10 Bulldogs could point to a quarter here and there as having an impact, but few had a consistent impact over four quarters. Much like the Adelaide game a week earlier, Groves couldn’t help but be impressed by the visiting Melbourne. “Their older stars ‘Paxy’ [Karen Paxman], Daisy [Pearce] and Elise O’Dea played bloody good footy,” he said. “We can control the footy. We’ve got some really good kicks in the team, but their pressure was really good and forced us into making mistakes by foot.”
