World, here I come Nine-year-old Newport girl Isabelle Bitsikas is heading for Barcelona to compete for a world title after being crowned a Dancer of the Year in the Showcase Australian Dance Championships. Lisa Anne Hammer, director of The Dance Company in Altona North, said Isabelle started dancing at the studio about age two. “She competed against 50 other dancers from around Australia and New Zealand to win this prestigious title,” Ms Hammer said. In the same competition, Isabelle was in one of three groups from the school which won the Battle of the Stars grand final. Isabelle will go to Barcelona in June to compete in the World Dance Movement International Competition. She says she’s excited at the prospect of meeting so many new people. The national competition had been “really hard, but I pushed through it”. “I just want to say a big thank you to all my teachers and friends.” (Damjan Janevski)

Cafe plan to replace RSL Shock has been expressed at new plans by RSL Victoria and Grocon to replace the Williamstown RSL sub-branch with a cafe. A community meeting in December heard that an application by Grocon to redevelop the premises into a five-storey building with a smaller sub-branch at ground level had fallen through because a heritage overlay made the project unviable. It heard the land had been gifted to returned Diggers and the community for the RSL sub-branch in 1919. As revealed exclusively by Star Weekly in December, the club was forced
to close on January 3 because of a $3.5 million debt. However, an amended planning application lodged with Hobsons Bay council in January proposes to develop the club site into a five-storey building with 64 apartments and a 325-square-metre cafe on the ground floor. It also proposes 92 car spaces. An adjacent house owned by the RSL is set to be retained. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan expressed shock at the new plans. “It’s disappointing to learn that the site of our local RSL will be replaced with a cafe,” he said. “Surely the decision-makers at RSL Victoria could negotiate with Grocon for the sub-branch to

Moase said residents were rallying to lodge mass objections against the plans. “This is an injustice,” he said. “Grocon and RSL Victoria head office are taking one of our Williamstown community spaces and wringing the most private gain it can.” Sources close to the RSL understood the deal between RSL Victoria and Grocon to develop the sub-branch site had fallen through by late last year and the property was to be placed on An artist’s image of the proposed development the open market. Thieves snub CCTV, security staff By Benjamin Millar Violent crime is on the rise at Highpoint shopping centre despite a drop in overall offences. Crime Statistics Agency data obtained by Star Weekly in the wake of recent high-profile robberies at the centre reveals a spike in robberies and assaults crimes in the 12 months to September. In the previous five years there have been 70 assaults, more than 20 sexual offences, and 28 robberies, including 14 in the past 12 months.
There were 4143 total crimes in the same period, peaking at 926 in 2013 and dropping to 701 last year due to a decline in theft. The data shows the number of assaults and robberies is at a five-year high. Footscray police’s Inspector Adrian Healy said police had been working closely with Highpoint management to tackle crime. “There’s an extensive security and CCTV network in and around the centre,” he said. “There are a few incidents of late that have generated attention; it generally tends to be youth offending.”
‘‘
We invest to ensure the safety and security of all - Spokeswoman visitors
’’
A spokeswoman for centre operators GPT said the safety and security of visitors to Highpoint was always a top priority. She said the centre team had been in regular contact with the families of the teenagers robbed in recent incidents at the centre “to provide any support we can”.
“We can’t discuss our security measures in detail, but we invest to ensure the safety and security of all visitors, through security staffing and CCTV. Such incidents are unacceptable in the centre and we take them very seriously.” The spokeswoman said the centre hosted about 16.7 million visits each year. The CSA data shows Altona Gate shopping centre recorded 580 crimes in the five years to September, including 32 assaults. Central Square shopping centre in Altona Meadows recorded 399 crimes in the same period, including 21 assaults.
Meat works fined again
(Damjan Janevski)
A Brooklyn meat-processing company has been fined again for causing a stink in its neighbourhood, just a few months after being penalised for the same offence. JBS Australia was recently fined $7773 by the Environment Protection Authority for releasing an odour that Yarraville residents described as smelling like urine and manure. JBS was previously fined more than $7500 for emitting a manure-like odour from its site last April. In August, the EPA received several complaints from Yarraville residents about strong, offensive smells. An EPA officer determined the odour was consistent with livestock urine and manure, and could be detected in and around Somerville Road and Ballard, Kidman and Stooke streets in Yarraville. EPA metropolitan manager Dan Hunt said odour testing was conducted and the smell was traced to JBS’s cattleyards in Industry Park Drive. “It’s disappointing that EPA continued to receive reports from community about how they were being impacted,” he said. “Allowing odour to discharge from the company’s site is a breach of their EPA licence and an offence.” Along with the fine, the company is required to fix its stockyard odour and rendering-plant procedures. “Licence holders need to have processes to prevent environmental impacts and be able to demonstrate they are complying with their licence,” Mr Hunt said. “The company has allowed odours to … impact on local communities, a clear breach of its EPA licence.” EPA pollution hotline: 1300 372 842.

Court closes Footscray brothel By Benjamin Millar An illegal brothel has been shut down after being found operating just 50 metres from Footscray Primary School. The brothel was operating at Young Asian Massage at 120 Geelong Road, in premises owned by Daniel and Amanda Cumming, the brother and sister-in law of Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming. Following a series of complaints about illegal activities on the premises, Sunshine Magistrates Court declared the premises a
proscribed brothel under the Sex Work Act 1994. The order makes it an offence for any person to be found in or entering or leaving the premises without a lawful purpose. State planning rules require brothels to be at least 200 metres from schools and any other places children spend time regularly. The now abandoned brothel was operating in a prominent location in the Heritage Council-listed Green’s Buildings. Neighbouring resident Jonathan said he had complained more than a year ago to the owner’s mother, Margaret Cumming (who
owns adjacent property), about the premises being used as an illegal brothel. “It was going for a long time before anything happened,” he said. Another nearby resident said she was appalled an illegal brothel could have operated under the noses of the authorities for so long. “There seems to be this idea that it’s Footscray so we’re not meant to worry about these things,” she said. Star Weekly located a number of personal escort ads online relating to the premises and
observed visitors attempting to gain access to the premises on Monday. The closure follows November court orders shutting down an illegal brothel operating as Red Rose Body to Body Massage at 120 Ballarat Road, just 200 metres from Footscray City College, and another at 228 Ballarat Road. John Cumming, a former mayor and Margaret Cumming’s son, last year received council approval for an 88-bed backpackers lodge on the top floor of the Green’s Buildings. The Cumming family did not respond when contacted by Star Weekly.
Ships yield to swimmers Swimmers will be able to freestyle alongside world champions at Rotary’s Jalna Big Bay Swim from Port Melbourne to Williamstown on February 26. Hall of Fame open water swimmer Chloe McCardel, who recently broke Des Renford’s record of 19 English Channel crossings, is ambassador – for the fifth time – of the annual Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand fundraiser. Melbourne’s shipping channel will close for an hour from 9am as entrants swim 3.2 kilometres from Sandridge beach to Pelican’s Landing Restaurant alongside Gem Pier. Local resident Michael Harwood, who swims daily off Williamstown with the same ‘pod’, is among regulars who enter the event every year. “Most people have done six, seven, eight, nine, 10 swims,” he said. “The challenge of 3.2 kilometres is the same distance as across the Heads out in Port Phillip Bay. It’s just a
good fundraiser to help the local community.” Rotarian and organiser Ron Coleman said the swim, which started in 1988, was second only to Lorne’s Pier to Pub as Victoria’s longestrunning open water swim. “The Jalna Big Bay Swim gives open water swimmers the only chance to swim across Port Phillip Bay in a fully patrolled event,” he said. “Better still, it raises thousands of dollars for worthy Rotary causes, including a pirates day for kids with cancer and a youth leadership camp for 80 western suburbs kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. “Spectators and families can also enjoy our community festival and market on Commonwealth Reserve afterwards and get a free tub of Jalna yoghurt.” For registration, market stall bookings and sponsorship inquiries, visit bigbayswim.com. au Goya Dmytryshchak

Fracas clip not ‘the full story’ A man charged after a wild clash with police at Altona North McDonald’s claims officers sparked the fracas when they tried to move him on as he waited for his food. But a Victoria Police superintendent said a video of the conflict did not tell the whole story, and has backed the police involved. Fady Taleb says he parked in front of the Altona North outlet about 7.10pm last Friday waiting for food from his drive-through order when a police officer told him to leave. He said he instead drove again through the drive-through lane, and that police then stopped him and said he would get a ticket. After this point, footage of the incident was captured by a friend of Mr Taleb showing him objecting when police try to search his black Mercedes Benz sedan, before the altercation dramatically escalates and he is arrested. “As they go to look in my car, I start to say ‘what are you doing?’ … before I even finish the sentence he grabs me,” Mr Taleb said. “I didn’t touch the officer first.” Mr Taleb claimed he had been in hospital until Saturday afternoon receiving treatment for minor injuries, and was still in shock. He accused one officer of punching him three times to the head before another officer stepped in, but said that this had not been captured on camera. It is unclear whether the entire incident is captured in the four-minute clip. At least five police and three men become involved. Police confirmed three officers had minor injuries.
Mr Taleb said his brothers rushed to the scene after his friend broadcast the incident on Facebook Live. The incident escalated further when the other men arrived, and Mr Taleb was capsicum-sprayed while on the ground with two officers on his back – despite a brother warning them Mr Taleb had heart problems. Another brother shouted abuse at the officers as Mr Taleb was arrested. Mr Taleb, a 22-year-old from Altona who described the police as “pigs” on social media afterwards, has been charged with affray and assaulting police. A 19-year-old from Altona was charged with assaulting and resisting police. Both were bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on June 20. “Capsicum foam was deployed to subdue the driver and another aggressive male,” a police spokesman said. “Both were provided [health] care before being taken to Altona North police station for questioning.” The spokesman said no official complaint had been received about the incident, which would be reviewed by local police. Mr Taleb intends to file a complaint in the coming days, and believes that he may have been targeted for his Middle-Eastern appearance, despite having no police history. Superintendent Stuart Bateson stood by the officers involved and said police faced dynamic situations that quickly escalate into violence. “It is a timely reminder to the community that if you do assault or threaten a police officer, you will be charged.”

Brooklyn residents and their pooches are celebrating a pop-up dog park under a project aimed at revitalising the suburb. The $60,000 Brooklyn Neighbourhood Project is a joint initiative of Hobsons Bay council and CoDesign Studio to establish three community-led initiatives that transform underutilised land and bring the community together. Under the project, a temporary off-leash dog park has been established at Brooklyn Reserve. Public artwork has also been installed in the lane way at 31A Cypress Avenue. Both initiatives will be in place until the end of next month. Brooklyn resident Karen Thistlethwaite said
the project gave local residents the opportunity to contribute to projects they wanted to see happen in their area. “The pop-up dog park has been particularly important for Brooklyn,” she said. “Being such an industrial suburb, there are few green spaces. It has been wonderful to see this park activated in a way that brings local residents together.” The council is continuing to work with residents on more ideas. From the Meadows with love By Goya Dmytryshchak It’s the end of the TV road for Altona Meadows’ John Robertson, who left Channel 9’s Married at First Sight on Monday night. But if the interest he has generated since appearing on the show gives any indication, he won’t be alone for long. As Star Weekly caught up with the divorced business owner at an Altona cafe, a woman on the next table leaned over and said to John: “Excuse me, I’m sorry to interrupt you – I think you’re awesome, I think you’re a wonderful man, we watched you every night.”
‘‘
I think I’m going to have a little break for a little - John Robertson bit
’’
John told her he really appreciated the comment. In fact, so many women have expressed their appreciation of John that Channel 9 hosted a meet-and-greet for local women at Yarraville’s Railway Hotel on Monday night. While John was at ease during the evening he said the TV experience “has been overwhelming”. “I still hope to meet somebody but I think I’m going to have a break for a little bit,” he said. During the series John was paired with former model Deborah, also 53, who on the day they met – at the altar – said: “I was expecting someone from the Polynesian islands, so now I’ve got to overcome that”. Recapping his time on the show, John said he offered to move out of their hotel on their Somoan honeymoon after everything he did seemed to cause irritation.
John Robertson meets local women at Yarraville’s Railway Hotel and, right, on Married at First Sight.
“When you feel that you’re getting on somebody’s nerves, it’s awkward,” he said. After the honeymoon, the couples had a commitment ceremony in which they had to write down and reveal if they wanted to stay or leave the marriage.
(Pictures: Channel 9)
John wrote “leave” – and Deborah wrote “stay”. “I was flabbergasted when she said ‘stay’ because I thought, this is a motza [certainty], we’re both gonna leave,” John said. At that point, the show’s experts advised
couples who gave different responses to reassess. “So, I did and I slept on it all that night and I thought, ‘Nah, if we’re not going to be a romantic item then what’s the point of going into the house [living as couples],” John said. But he said he regrets nothing.

VU grilled on anti-Islam booking By Benjamin Millar
booking was clearly out of kilter with the values of most staff and students. “It absolutely beggars belief that Victoria University, a university which prides itself on diversity, inclusiveness and equity, could have accepted a booking by the anti-Islamic, far-Right group the Q Society,” he said. Dr Adams said the Q Society was a rabid anti-Islamic group with a long history of inciting hatred against Islam and Muslim groups. He has called for a full investigation into the booking of the university’s convention centre
Victoria University will review its event booking process after a backlash against its decision to provide space for a fundraising event by a far-Right anti-Islamic group. The Q Society held its dinner event at VU’s city convention centre on Friday night, despite a VU policy forbidding uses of university facilities incompatible with the university’s values or strategic direction. National Tertiary Education Union VU branch spokesman Paul Adams said the
and wants to see the money received for the centre’s hire for the event donated to an Islamic charity. The Q Society web page says the organisation was formed in response to “growing concerns about the discrimination, violence and other anti-democratic practices linked to Islam”. Friday’s fundraising dinner featured National MP George Christensen and Liberal defector Cory Bernardi. It followed a similar event held in Sydney on Thursday night at which cartoonist Larry Pickering reportedly made anti-Islamic and
homophobic remarks and auctioned a cartoon depicting the rape of a woman in a niqab by her son-in-law. In an email to staff on Monday afternoon, VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said there was “a stark divergence” between many of the Q Society’s views and VU’s values. “We are taking swift action to review all administrative processes,” he said. “VU deeply regrets that it inadvertently took a booking for this event and apologises for any distress caused to our staff, students and other stakeholders.”

Award-winning writer and human rights advocate Arnold Zable will speak at the annual general meeting of Hobsons Bay Refugee Network, which is open to the public for free. “We’re a country of Indigenous people and immigrants, a new world with an ancient past, a grand symphony with many melodies,” Zable said. “That’s what makes us great. “And if we appreciate it and we honour it, I think we have a very positive way forward, but if we play fear-mongering, then I think we’re sailing in dangerous waters.” Zable will also speak about the effect of Donald Trump on international communities, including Australian politics. “What we’re seeing is a person who is casting all kinds of aspersions on whole groups of people, and I find this utterly alarming – Mexicans are this, Muslims are that. “What he’s put out there in his own words condemns him as a person who is using the

West festival plans stalled
SUMMER LEATITAGALOA
Prize is in safe hands By Benjamin Millar Footscray’s Summer Leatitagaloa has lobbed into the spotlight as the country’s top ballgirl. Summer, 15, took the honour as one of the top two ballkids out of 380 during the recent Australian Open. Taking part in her third and final Australian Open, the keen tennis player said it was a dream come true to share the court with Serena and
Venus Williams during their final and to be there as Roger Federer claimed the men’s title. “I loved the atmosphere and getting up close with the players was a great experience … just to be on the same court with them,” she said. “I was really happy to be there when the Williams sisters played in the final.” Summer has enjoyed each of her Australian Open experiences, after first becoming a ballkid at 13 at the suggestion of her mother
Leanne. As high temperatures took a physical and mental toll on the court during this year’s Open, Summer stayed calm and composed to lead by example for the younger ballkids. Leanne said she was proud of her daughter for her leadership and pleased by the level of support shown to the ballkids by Tennis Australia. The ‘best ballgirl’ honour has earned Summer a place as a ballkid at Roland Garros for the 2017 French Open in May and June.
A new arts-based festival may replace the scuttled Big West Festival this year, despite the withdrawal of a proposal by key inner-west arts organisations. Maribyrnong council last August set aside the $85,000 earlier earmarked for Big West before the festival board suddenly announced it was folding the organisation and the festival. Maribyrnong planning services director Nigel Higgins said the council had received a number of proposals for a future artist-focused festival and been seeking feedback since September. A draft update of the council’s Festival City Policy is due to be presented to next week’s council meeting. “Once the updated Festival City Policy has been adopted, a report for a new artist-focused festival model will be taken to council for consideration,” Mr Higgins said. The Arts West alliance of inner-west arts organisations initially proposed it could spearhead a new festival, but has since pulled out. Jade Lillie, Footscray Community Arts Centre chief executive and a member of the Arts West executive, said the timing of the festival review and council elections left too little time to gauge the council’s interest in its proposal for 2017. “Arts West will continue to work with Maribyrnong City Council and Creative Victoria to explore any new ideas or opportunities,” she said. Blackbird waits, no stone turned

Idaho, here we come By Benjamin Millar Aspiring Maribyrnong athletes are winging their way to the US this week to take on some of the world’s top young talent. An eight-member team from Maribyrnong Sports Academy will be among more than 2000 athletes competing in the Simplot Games in Idaho from Thursday until Saturday. Coach Darren Clarke says competing internationally is an invaluable opportunity for
rising athletic stars such as team captains Jessie Andrew and Celeste Mucci. “It’s the first overseas experience for a lot of these athletes; they get to see what it’s like to compete in another country,” he said. “It’s often their first experience of indoor athletics. It’s an exciting and scary thing when they first see an indoor track.” Four of the team are returning for their second or third time, while four will be making their debut.
Sprinter Jessie Andrew, 16, said this would be her third visit to the Games. “Each time you go away you learn something new. It’s a great atmosphere, the number of people you get in the stands is crazy.” Simplot ambassador Steven Hooker said early exposure to international competition could give young athletes a competitive edge. The Olympic pole vault gold medallist said he looked forward to travelling with the team as a mentor.
A $1.5 million teahouse on the Maribyrnong River is yet to see the light of day, months after it was due for completion. Maribyrnong council signed a 21-year lease in 2015 with a developer to build the 140-seat cafe-restaurant on riverside Crown land, currently occupied by the Blackbird river ferry. Developer Castlewell Pty Ltd was to build the teahouse in exchange for a heavily discounted lease, before rights to the property revert to the council after 21 years. The operators would pay rent to the council of $114 a year for the first decade, climbing to $2750 in years 11 to 15, and $5500 in years 16 to 21. Council could then rent out the site at market rates, estimated to be valued at $65,000 a year. The development is also due to include an office for Maribyrnong River Cruises and moorings for the iconic Blackbird, as well as public moorings. It was due to be completed by the end of last year. Maribyrnong council corporate services director Celia Haddock said discussions to finalise the lease agreement with the developer are ongoing. “A date … has not been determined, however discussions include plans for the temporary relocation of Maribyrnong River Cruises during construction.” Castlewell Pty Ltd could not be reached for comment. MY PLACE Radical crafter Rayna Fahey has plenty of love for Braybrook, celebrating a diverse community with a lot of heart. She talks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Braybrook?
What’s one of the most memorable projects you have developed?
I’ve been living in Braybrook with my family for 10 years. Our kids go to school here and we’re really involved in our local community through food, gardening and arts projects.
The most significant local project was when I organised a bunch of people to cross-stitch “I wanna live here” on a prominent fence in Footscray as a protest against rampant land speculation. That project gained a huge amount of international attention and was a much-loved local artwork. I’m pleased to see, after about eight years, the land owner of that site has finally done something with it.
What do you love most about the area? Is there anything you would change? I absolutely love the diversity in the western suburbs. Our family just returned from a six-month road trip around Australia and there is simply nothing like the rich tapestry of life here in the west. We have been relishing the food since we got back! If I was to change anything, it would be to significantly invest in our young people. We have such a creative and visionary youth sector. Supporting them and their ideas would make this an even better place to live.
What is the idea behind your current project, Heart and Seek?
I love the Braybrook library and Braybrook Commons Community Garden – there’s always a friendly face around. Our neighbourhood is such a little village. I also love all the little back street shopping strips and cafes. Knowing the local business people and their families, and supporting their business, is so much nicer than visiting soulless mega-malls full of sweatshop-produced franchise boringness! How did you become involved in crafting? I’ve always been creative, but I took up textiles
(Damjan Janevski)
Do you have a favourite local place or places to spend time?
when I was pregnant with my first child. I love craft because it is so social and is a great way to bring people together. When and why did that evolve into radical crafting and “seditious stitching”? I’ve been a political activist for a lot longer than I’ve been a crafter, so as soon as I started
crafting, I became a craftivist. Craft is not just a medium for creativity – it’s a way to change the world. In this rampant consumerist age, making your own clothes has become a political act. But craft can also be used to communicate radical and subversive ideas. Because craft is perceived as a benign activity, it can sidestep lines of authority, which can be enormously powerful.
Heart and Seek is my little love letter to the west, which I missed a lot while we were away. But it’s also a response to the rapid rise in fear-based politics, both here and abroad. Having visited some incredibly monocultural communities on the road, I was struck by how plain and boring they all were. But back in Footscray, the colour and life is by far and away our greatest asset. This vibrancy is something we should all celebrate and contribute to. Heart and Seek is a way for everyone to show their love for the place in which they live. Anyone can weave or stitch a small heart in their area – the important thing is opening your eyes to the things you love about your home town and celebrating those things. Heart and Seek is taking place at various public sites across Footscray, including “little. No BIG” gallery on Level 1, 119 Hopkins Street. FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir delights in a Thai arrival to Footscray … Footscray central … so much wonderful food, so many lovely people. Apart from the central themes of Vietnamese and Ethiopian tucker, I can think of at least half a dozen other food varieties without even trying … but, Thai? Aside from a brief appearance in Hopkins Street several years, Thai food has never been part of the Footscray landscape, the nearest restaurants being in West Footscray, Seddon and Kensington. With the arrival of Issan Thai Street Food, the ballgame changes, adding another strand to inner Footscray’s diversity. I think Noi and hubby Vince are being very smart indeed. After my solo visit for reconnaissance purposes, a happy group of seven CTS pals hits Issan and has a swell time. We find the service fine and the wait times appropriate for the food we order. The sharing platter, som tum tard ($18.90), is a doozy – a big mound of excellent spicy green papaya salad surrounded by pork crackling, chicken wings, wet-smooth noodles, bean sprouts and chargrilled diced beef. Even the hardboiled egg halves are superbly done, with the yolks gooey, not runny. Our order of satay tofu ($6.90), fuelled by the intense curiosity of three of our group, doesn’t impress greatly – I think we’ve been expecting tofu a little more crusty and crunchy. This is OK and the peanutty sauce is good. The pork skewers of moo ping ($10.90) are outstanding. The meat is perfectly cooked,
ISSAN THAI STREET FOOD Address: 10 Droop Street, Footscray Phone: 9689 9404 packed with chargrill flavour and served with a zingy tamarind-based sauce. Our serve of Penang curry with beef ($15.90) is of modest proportions, but all good. Its deeply rich flavoursome sauce/gravy is the hit, with some of us mopping it up with rice long after the curry’s main protagonists have gone and other dishes have arrived at our table. Pad thai with chicken ($13.90) is a fine version of this popular noodle dish. The chicken salad of larb gai ($13.90) really impresses with its freshness and tang. Likewise with the equally sexy moo narm tok ($13.90) – sliced grilled pork with lemon juice, herbs, chilli and toasted ground rice … fatty, chargrilled gloriousness! At Issan, you won’t find much exotica, offal or many regional specialties. But our general consensus is that Issan fare is a considerable cut above what is generally found in your typical suburban Thai restaurant. We double order several dishes – the moo ping, the larb gai and the moo narm tok – and eat substantially and satisfyingly well. The bill for seven is just under $20 each. UPSIDE DOWN BAKED POTATOES Given Danny McGinlay’s penchant for potatoes … here’s something totally worth trying next time you’re stuck for ideas on how to serve up spuds. Pour three tablespoons of melted butter into a baking dish. Sprinkle three tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese over the melted butter. Cut two medium potatoes in half lengthwise and place cut side down on the butter/cheese mixture. Bake at 200 degrees Celsius for 30 to 35 minutes, or until cooked.
DANNY MCGINLAY – BULLDOGS’ BANNER MAN FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? DM: With all due modesty, they are effing spectacular. FB: What is your signature dish? DM: I have a charcoal Weber that I love. Cook with fire. Caveman happy! Meat tasty! FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? DM: A chicken parma and a wheelie bin full of chips. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? DM: River Cottage – Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. He’s got a brilliant philosophy of ethical real food and community, all whilst being so damn likeable. As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au
FB: What is your favourite food? DM: Chips. It could be my Irish heritage, but I reckon there’s not a single meal that’s not enhanced by the addition of deep fried potato. FB: What is your favourite drink? DM: Mocha Big M. Bring it back! We’ve had egg flip as the fifth flavour for like seven years now! I liked when it changed every six months. Vanilla Big M was great, some were weird, like choc pine, but the variety was exciting. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? DM: Billy Connolly, David Letterman, Luke Beveridge, Jim Henson, and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall to do the cooking.
As always, if you have any FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? recipes, tips or other DM: Never eat soup the same day you make it. info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au
EGGSCELLENT BACON I mentioned recently in this column that I’d discovered a new favourite kitchen gadget (well, second favourite behind our Breville portable pizza oven). The Décor microsafe steam egg poacher was something my husband brought home from a trip to the supermarket after seeing Fast Ed use it to make his café style eggs on TV. We weren’t disappointed. It turns out great poached eggs. Given the success of the egg poacher, hubby was keen to roadtest its partner – the Décor microsafe bacon cooker. To me, it still sounds inconceivable that a microwave can produce crispy bacon. But again, we had success. The bacon cooker has a sloped base design and raised fins, so that the bacon rashers are suspended up away from the base, and the fat is drained away. There’s also no need to add any oil, so it’s certainly a healthier, much less messy way of cooking, as opposed to whacking the bacon in a frypan and having the oily bits hiss and splatter all over you. We’re taking advantage of the fact both of these gadgets are very portable, and we plan to take them on holiday later in the year. Our holiday rental has a microwave, so we intend to have a couple of DIY bacon and egg breakfasts on the balcony during our stay.

A facade featuring a contemporary-take on Italianate architecture speaks of the substantial residence that lies within. The large formal lounge room has a gas fire dressed in a traditional-style surround with wood-turned florets. Multi-paned French doors dressed in custom-finished curtains are found in the generously-sized main bedroom, which has two large built-in wardrobes leading to the en suite. Two further bedrooms both have built-in wardrobes. The light, bright main bathroom has a separate bath. The kitchen has hardwood doors, with slate flooring opening to hardwood floorboards in the family-friendly main living area. A great entertainer’s deck overlooks a well-manicured backyard. Other features include ducted heating and cooling and security system. The property is a 15 minute bike ride from Williamstown Beach and close to schools and train station.
This California bungalow on about 500 square metres has a very pretty backyard ready to accommodate an extension, council being willing. Ornate plaster work on ceilings and cornices, picture rails, deep skirts, lightfittings and an art deco fireplace remain, while a white-on-white palette and grey carpets create a modern look. A traditional entrance hall opens the way to three bedrooms, one of which is set up as a front lounge room. Next door, there’s a dining room (with fireplace) that links with the cute eat-in kitchen, and an adjoining sitting room opens to the garden. There’s a bright main bathroom at hall’s end, while a laundry with second shower is off a vestibule. A side driveway and a garage behind gates, along with rear right-of-way access, are other drawcards.

In a popular neighbourhood, within an amble of Seddon’s café scene, this Edwardian has polished floorboards in every room (except for two of the three bedrooms), character-rich windows (some leadlight) and an original cast-iron fireplace and surround. The fireplace is a focal point in a charming lounge room, which has an ornate fretwork servery to the kitchen. Timber benches, pressed-metal splashbacks and stainless-steel cooker and dishwasher fit out the eat-in kitchen. A shared bathroom with pedestal basin and shower-over-tub combo incorporates laundry facilities. A brick-paved courtyard faces a large, leafy backyard with fruit trees; a shed and rear right-of-way access for off-street parking are also here. Yarraville Village and Seddon cafes and shops are at your doorstep.
Within a 10-minute stroll of Barkly Street eateries and a four-minute drive of Footscray West Primary School and train station, this property of about 1010 square metres is ripe for redevelopment, STCA, but the existing house has been revamped inside to reflect today’s look. Floorboards line most rooms; walls are white or soft-grey, accents are charcoal; cornices on high ceilings are ornate. A lounge room has a fireplace with brick surround, while a rear living room opens to a fab outdoor area with partially enclosed pergola, multi-level decks, a second (gabled) pergola, bamboo screens and a swim-spa. The eat-in kitchen has charcoal cabinetry and walk-in pantry. Of the three good-sized bedrooms, the main has a fireplace. The shared bathroom (and there’s a powder room) has a modern vanity and shower-over-bath combo.

at the front as you drive into your lined and painted garage, then up porcelain-tiled steps to the foyer where high ceilings and low lighting (set via CBUS from your phone) are already helping you unwind. You see the entertainer’s lounge room to the left, flooded with afternoon light via huge Japanese-influenced commercial-grade aluminium windows. The large proportions flow to the dining zone. Walk past plenty of storage to the left and the first of five large bedrooms to the right. Next is the main bathroom, with Vileroy & Boch toilet and basin, Grohe tapware and
frameless oversized shower. These features are mirrored in every bathroom, as well as the large powder room. The luxurious kitchen has 40mm granite benchtops, bulkhead detailing, ASKO dishwasher and honey-toned floor-to-ceiling hardwood cabinetry as well as an integrated Meff steam oven above a Smeg cooker. Up a bespoke curved wooden staircase, there are a cinema room/retreat with fully plumbed bar, two linen presses and two more bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes. A study/fifth bedroom and the main bathroom are here. The main

bedroom overlooks the ocean, and has a palatial en suite with raised spa. The large walk-in wardrobe with laundry chute makes life easy. Make yourself a drink and get ready to entertain. Security cameras show the guests’ arrival through keypad entry. This is when you open the stacker doors to the patio and soak up the sea air … Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads starts playing in your mind and you ask yourself: “How did I get here?” Sam Freestone

Footscray 63A Victoria Street Re-define A Local Landmark Currently configured as shop-front and office proportions behind a traditional Victorian profile, this dual level property represents a unique opportunity for re-invention and residential development, STCA in a location that’s so central to every element of Footscray. T
e’ve all been guilty of not paying attention on the road and most times we get away with it, albeit not always without a fright. Which is why I love Volvo’s lane-keeping technology. Say you have your head down trying to find a radio station and the car starts wandering across the road. As you drift towards the white line the lane-keeper tugs gently on the wheel to keep you within your own lane, while also reminding you that a radio program is not worth panel damage. You can have fun letting the car skip along the line by itself, and should it start following an errant white line overriding it is as easy as steering where you want to go. I’m a big fan of the XC90 and the R-Design Polestar is the sportiest number with low-profile tyres and a unique grille. The ride is sharp but it handles like a hot hatch and feels light and agile. The two-litre turbo-diesel is extremely economical as well as having remarkable punch. It’s very quick and nicely responsive. Okay, the engine is a tad noisier than most but the 71-litre tank goes a long way.
here’s no getting around how big this car is, and while it has a surround-view camera, a reversing camera and acoustic parking, it’s a handful to get into a small space. But if you’re carting seven people there are few more comfortable ways to do it. The rearmost seating for passengers six and seven is comfortable and generous enough for adults and there’s even room behind for luggage, although getting to it is not exactly dignified. This is a city SUV with low-profile tyres and hard suspension. It’s quick away from the lights and has enough power to dive into holes in the traffic. At the same time the steering is light and supple and the view of the road is commanding. I love the huge centre screen, as big as an iPad and clearly based on one. It has three separate menu screens (toggle between them by swiping) and they control almost everything in the car, from the engine start/ stop to the seat heaters – which are among the best in the business. But I’m not convinced this is worth the extra over the base XC90.

SPORT Eames takes back the western front are looking forward to working with him, his coaching team and all the players as we chase back-to-back community championship victories.” Eames will be scouring the west for best young guns for possible selection. “We won’t be changing the way we go about it this year; the players are expected to commit to the program and they have to come with a passion for the western suburbs,” he said. “Last year’s group was outstanding. “If most of the players who played last year are still involved with the WRFL and are in good form, then they will certainly come under consideration to be selected. “There is a lot of young players coming through the ranks as well – there is some great talent in this competition, and this year I would like to identify those players a little better. “If we can get a similar group on board this year, and they are committed to the team, then that will hold us in good stead.” The WRFL’s clash with the NFL will take place on May 13 at a venue to be decided. Opazo to the rescue By Lance Jenkinson Alfonso Opazo is undertaking a labour of love as the new coach of Laverton Park in Football Federation Victoria’s men’s state league 5. Opazo was a highly sought-after coach following his days of leading Hoppers Crossing from the doldrums to promotion, but after 17 years of non-stop football as player and coach, he needed time-out to give back to his supportive family. During his two years away from the game, Opazo continued to field calls from clubs in the upper echelon of the state leagues, but it was one from the fifth tier that caught his attention. “I wasn’t really looking to coach this year,” the 39-year-old from Manor Lakes said. “Laverton Park came knocking and said they were looking to change direction and turn the club around. “It’s a club with a Chilean background. My parents are Chilean, so I’ve got that background and my father played for them back in the ’70s.” There are few tougher assignments than having to rescue a club that had fallen all the way to state league 5. It’s a division normally associated with expansion clubs making their way in the state league ranks, not an established club that was once a permanent fixture in the middle tiers of the state leagues – which goes to show how far the Reds have fallen in recent seasons. “The club used to be at a decent level back in the day – they were in state 2 or 3 – but they’ve had some hard times and, for whatever reason, they’ve ended up where they are now in state 5,” Opazo said. “A new committee has jumped on board and they’ve got a similar vision to my own in regards to trying to get this club back up the ladder. “It excites me a little bit because they’re basically starting from scratch again. Similar to where Hoppers Crossing was when I took over there, the club decided enough’s enough and we’ve got to turn this ship around.” There has already been a noticeable lift in professionalism at Laverton Park since Opazo took over. Pre-season training has started much earlier and the numbers on the track have increased significantly. “In the past couple of years, I’ve been told they’d be lucky to get eight or nine players show up to the first pre-season training,” Opazo said. “There’s already over 45 players at our disposal
■ One of the things I love about sport is the people involved, and one of the things I love about the west is the people who live here. When you combine the two, it’s an irresistible force, a steadfast resolve built on loyalty, respect and integrity. One man who has earned the respect and friendship of everyone involved in sport in the west is Col Newcombe, from Ascot Vale Sports and Trophies. Everyone knows Col from Colac, the former umpire who has rescued more club presentation and trophy nights than any other human on the planet. There would hardly be a trophy cabinet in the west that doesn’t have something with his fingerprints on it. Col is always up for a chat, always knowing the latest news from everywhere. The news from Col, though, is not good. He’s facing a serious health battle that will stretch his family financially. A Col from Colac Gala is planned for Wednesday, April 19, at Melrose Reception Centre. I’ll report more details in coming weeks and you can follow the Facebook page ColfromColacgala. The important thing now is to lock the date away in your diary and get behind one of the really genuine, likeable and most decent blokes you’ll ever meet. ■ Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club held its Hall of Fame luncheon last Sunday in a big afternoon at Atlantic @ Central Pier. Great names of the club Keith Burnham, Arthur Dean, Vid Richardson, John Sharp, Barry Watson and Michael O’Keefe, were lauded and inducted with this prestigious honour. All six men have made enormous contributions on and off the field for the Footscray club spanning the Fifties right through to the mid-2000s. The group’s awards and achievements are vast. Well done to all six and to the club on acknowledging their feats. ■ What on earth is going on at Fearon Reserve? I had a look at the ground last week and while feverish work is going on, I don’t like the chances of the Williamstown CYMS Football Club playing many home games there in the coming season. While I’m no groundkeeper, it looked a long, long way from a playing surface to me. ■ The Glenorden Football Club is in trouble and will hold an extraordinary meeting tomorrow night in its clubrooms to address its immediate future. They’re on the verge of closing down the senior part of the club so all interested parties are urged to attend. Kevin Hillier

in the seniors and reserves.” The new regime has resulted in a massive recruiting haul. The latest big-name signing is speedy striker Juan Nilo, a former NSL player with the Gippsland Falcons and long-time Victorian Premier League star at Oakleigh Cannons and Bentleigh Greens. Like Opazo, Nilo played in the juniors at Laverton Park before entering the higher levels. Opazo has also brought in defender Julian Zach, winger Zia Sherzai, midfielder Tom
Orndahl and striker Jean-Paul Cardonne, all players proven at higher levels. “We needed five or six senior boys who have played at that level, who know what it takes and how training should be,” Opazo said. “It’s brought a buzz within the community again about the team. “We have a really multi-cultural squad. We want our club for the whole community, not only the Chilean community. We’re trying to tap into the whole of Laverton and the Hobsons Bay area.”

Anthony Eames will return as coach of the Western Region Football League’s senior interleague side in 2017. The newly-appointed Spotswood coach was in charge of the WRFL combined side at the AFL Victoria Community Championships last season, leading them to a stirring three-point win over Ballarat Football League. For the second year in a row, the WRFL climbed the interleague ranks, and opposition will get tougher this season with its winter clash against the powerful Northern Football League. “The NFL will be a tough assignment, but the effort and the buy-in from players last year proved we are more than capable of matching it with some of the best,” Eames said. There will be another familiar face on the WRFL coaching panel, with Brett Jacobs back on board as assistant coach. And former Spotswood coach Chris O’Keefe, now coaching at Albion, will be another assistant, while Steve Thom will continue as chairman of selectors. WRFL football operations manager Tim Shellcot was thrilled with the re-appointment of Eames. “Anthony is a well-respected coach – we

Possession wasted by clumsy, inaccurate Bulldogs Too much of the toil was left to too few for the Western Bulldogs in Friday night’s 25-point loss to a slick Adelaide Crows in the AFL Women’s second round at Victoria University Whitten Oval. The Bulldogs had a chance to keep their momentum going after a stirring first-up win over Fremantle in the opening game, but their early use of a strong breeze at their backs left a lot to be desired. The Dogs were sloppy venturing into attack and woefully inaccurate in front of goal – just five behinds was all they had to show from a lion’s share of possession to trail by three points at the first change. While the Bulldogs would take the lead with a goal through Katie Brennan early in the second quarter, it was by no means a precursor of what was to come. The Dogs would manage only one more major – kicked by Kirsten McLeod after halftime – for the rest of the game and never saw the lead again once the Crows got their
noses back in front. To focus on the Bulldogs’ deficiencies alone would not do justice to Adelaide’s breathtaking performance. The Crows put on a show for their fans watching on television back home. The visitors had the upper hand in all areas, from a water-tight defence to physicality in the midfield and class up forward, leaving Bulldogs coach Paul Groves impressed. “I thought their ability to pressure us when we did win the footy [was a factor],” Groves said. “They’ve done their homework on our set-ups and our structures to limit the effectiveness of some of our players.” The Bulldogs worked as a well-oiled unit in the first round but looked fractured in the second week. They sorely missed the midfield grunt of Jaimee Lambert, missing through injury, which left star onballer Emma Kearney exposed. Kearney racked up a game-high 23 disposals, but many of those touches were under pressure and not as damaging as the week before. That half back Hannah Scott was
one of the best Bulldogs on the night with 20 possessions says a lot about the game. The Bulldogs couldn’t handle the Crows’ clean ball movement from defence to attack and it had their defence under siege at times. Ellie Blackburn never stopped trying for the Bulldogs with 19 possessions; neither did Angelica Gogos (12 disposals) or Nicole Callinan (11). It was a tough night for Brennan. The Bulldogs captain had a target on her back from the first bounce. Her teammates need to do a better job creating a path to the football for her. Better delivery to the key forward would also aid Brennan’s cause. The Bulldogs need to bounce back in a hurry against Melbourne at the Whitten Oval on Saturday night. “It’s a really quick seven-week competition so you have to be ready every week,” Groves said. “If you’re off a little bit, potentially you cop what we copped tonight.” Lance Jenkinson
Spin bowler moves up By Lance Jenkinson With Yarraville’s finals prospects shot, it can start planning its future, one that is unlikely to feature star left arm orthodox spinner Akshat Buch. Buch has given his all to the Eagles over the past two summers, and emerged as one of the top spin-bowlers of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. His dedication to the Eagles cannot be questioned – he travels all the way from his home in Ferntree Gully, bypassing hundreds of clubs along the way, to call Yarraville Oval home. “It takes me one and a half hours to get to Yarraville,” Buch said. “It’s like a family to me at Yarraville. “Everyone at the club has been really supportive throughout the last two years, and you always have a good time. “That’s why I came back for the second year.” With one year left on his visa, Buch has to make the most of his time in Melbourne and think big picture. The 23-year-old from India has done all he can for Yarraville, taking more than 60 wickets combined in the past two seasons, including 28 at 16.9 in the first XI this season alone. He has also provided handy runs in the middle order. But before he returns to his homeland, Buch wants to find out if he can make the grade in Premier Cricket, and that must happen next summer. “I’ve got one more year on my visa, one more season to go, so we’re probably going to try to look at Premier Cricket, to give it a crack and see how it turns out for me,” Buch said. “If it’s good season in the Premier, I might look to extend my visa to stay, otherwise I’ll go back to India and play there. “I definitely want to go to Premier Cricket and have a crack at it.” If sustained sub-district form is any guide, all 18 Premier Cricket clubs should be lining up to take on Buch. Buch offers a unique skill set that could prove to be a valuable addition to any club. “What I’ve seen in sub-district cricket, and wherever I’ve played in Melbourne, most of the teams have a good leg spinner or a good off spinner, but there are very few left arm spinners, so I find myself an addition to an already good bowling attack,” Buch said. “It gives them the option of a left arm spin, which is quite different and sometimes hard to play when the wickets are turning.” Buch arrived in Australia as a raw 19-year-old with Hoppers Crossing, when it was part of the VTCA competition. At the time, then Hoppers Crossing president Steve McNamara predicted Buch “will be a sensation” in years to come.

Yarraville veteran Matthew Love endorsed Buch taking the step up to the next level. “He’s a ripper with both bat and ball – I think he should have higher aspirations,” Love said in a recent interview. Buch, a business student at RMIT University,

has not given up hope of a career in cricket. “I’ve got higher aspirations, definitely,” he said. “I want to play at the highest level possible in cricket. “That’s what I enjoy doing more than working and doing studies.”

A’s spinners turn it on for superb win Altona successfully turned to spin in defending a tiny total against Mount Waverley on the road at Mount Waverley Reserve in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west first XI. Having made just 126, the A’s needed to find 10 wickets and had no time to waste. After the pacemen enjoyed only moderate success, A’s captain Adam Yates decided to deploy the spinners – and did so with devastating effect. The A’s No. 1 spinner, left-armer Stefan Sidari, changed the game completely with a stunning 5-9 off 9.1 overs, including five maidens. Then Yates played his part with leg-spin, snaring 3-16 off eight. Mount Waverley went from a comfortable 3-59 to all out for 77, losing its last seven wickets for 18 runs. It was a massive result or Altona, which has all but locked away a finals berth after jumping up to third with two rounds to go. The A’s will host Werribee in a two-day blockbuster at Frank Kirk Oval starting on Saturday. Still leading the way at the top of the ladder is Williamstown, which had a 78-run win over Croydon away in a finals-like game at Croydon Oval. The Seagulls had a massive 8-316 to defend and did so rather comfortably, bowling the hosts out for 238. Daniel Popa and Patrick O’Malley were the stand-out Seagulls bowlers with three wickets apiece. Eight points clear in first, the Seagulls have issued a catch-us-if-you-can to their rivals. The Seagulls could just about seal the minor premiership with a win over Melton at Williamstown Cricket Ground in the penultimate round. Yarraville’s finals hope sunk with a 36-run loss to Melton at MacPherson Park. Chasing 241 for victory, the Eagles could only muster 204, with Matthew Love playing a lone hand with 132. Love is far and away the leading run-scorer in sub-district cricket, with 753 runs at 68.45. Having made 943 runs in all formats, Love is on target for a rare 1000-run season. Lance Jenkinson

Retirement move adds fire to Clubbers’ flag campaign If Yarraville Club needed extra motivation to go on and win this season’s Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division premiership, it arrived last week when coach and club stalwart Michael O’Keefe announced this would be his last season in charge. It was a significant week for O’Keefe, who was also inducted into the Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club hall of fame, alongside five other Bulldogs legends – John Sharp, Barry Watson, Vid Richardson, Arthur Dean and Keith Burnham. O’Keefe will stand down from Yarraville Club’s coaching post at season’s end, but not before firing up for one final premiership push. The Clubbers are locked in an enthralling battle with local rival Spotswood for supremacy on the ladder.
The sides are ranked one and two, with the Clubbers ahead by just 1.5 points. But the Clubbers will not be resting easy in the lead-up to the second day’s play. They posted 197 – historically a below par score at Walker Oval. Will Sheridan produced his biggest score of the summer for the Clubbers with 67, while Konrad Kurta (26) and Justin Baker (23) could not go on with starts. Spotswood bowled impeccably, with Upal Singankutti-Achchige (3-47) and Gene Maurice (3-51) leading the way, while Jeremy Brown chimed in with 2-29. The Woodsmen will begin the day on 0-16, requiring a further 182 runs to move to the top of the ladder. In north-west division, bottom side Footscray United can sniff its first win of the
summer after taking the upper hand against second-last Laverton. The Bulldogs are 3-59 in pursuit of Laverton’s 171. Yaditha Ushan (4-36) and Mohammed Pardesi (4-60) were the keys with the ball for the Bulldogs. Druids have given their home semi-final chances a boost, wrapping up first-innings points against Keilor Park inside a day. Druids powered to 3-134 after bowling the Devils out for 115. In the other games, Seddon posted 9-207 against St Albans in a game that may have major implications on the race for the top four, while Altona North made 246 against PEGS, with Sandeep Mandalika scoring 61. Melbourne Aces did not get the fairytale finish they were after in the Australian Baseball League. The Aces suffered a two-nil series sweep at the hands of Brisbane Bandits in a best-of-three grand final series at Melbourne Ballpark last weekend. Gunning for back-to-back titles, the Bandits made the perfect start to the series, winning game one 6-2 on Friday night, then clinching the title with a 3-1 win on Saturday night. In summer league baseball, Newport Rams lost a defence-minded game 2-1 to western conference leaders Fitzroy in division 1, while Williamstown Wolves kept their division 2 finals hopes alive with a 5-0 thrashing of Bonbeach. The fifth-placed Wolves host fourth-ranked Doncaster in a critical game on Sunday at Greenwich Reserve.
Premier Cricket
It was a strange Saturday in Premier Cricket when 18 wickets fell between Footscray Edgewater and Camberwell Magpies at Camberwell sports ground, with the Magpies bowled out for 172 and the Bulldogs in trouble on 8-112 in reply. Looking closer at the scoreboard, Camberwell’s innings was something out of the ordinary, with Simon Hill making 137 not out off 124 balls, equating to almost 80 per cent of his team’s runs. Seven other Magpies’ batsmen made ducks.

A fighting comeback By Lance Jenkinson Nathan Pellissier has made a stunning return to para table tennis. The Williamstown young gun overcame two years of frustration after injury to take out a national title in his first major competition back. Pellissier emerged victorious in the standing class 8 men’s singles at the Australian Para Table Tennis Nationals in Mornington, beating long-time rival Barak Mizrachi, a Paralympian at last year’s Rio games, in the gold medal match. “I hadn’t beaten him since 2013, so he’s been my tough opponent and rival for a long time,” Pellissier said. “It was always going to be challenging because we know each other’s game so well and play a good match every time. “He put up a good fight, but I believed that I’ve worked hard over the past two years to get back here, and I was very comfortable. “I was telling my coach after I won, I haven’t had that feeling of wanting to win something so bad for so long.” Pellissier, 20, has long suffered hip issues due to cerebral palsy. But it was an injury on the unaffected side of his body that has hampered
him over the past two years. Pellissier’s mum, Miranda, explained the struggles her son has faced. “He played at the world championships in 2014 in China, and that was his last tournament until this weekend,” she said. “He’s had two years out with injury and had to have a full hip reconstruction on his good side, not his cerebral palsy side. “They actually cut his bones in three places and put him all back together – and that was unsuccessful the first time in January 2015 … then March 2016, he needed bone grafting, which was another backwards step. “It was pretty tough for him to not be playing sport, but he did the hard work on his body, went to the gym for his strength and conditioning, and then got back to the table and has been training every day since.” Not once did Pellissier lose sight of his dream. The Maribyrnong Sports Academy graduate has a long checklist of events to tick off between now and his ultimate goal of competing at the 2020 Paralympics. First up for Pellissier was earning Australian selection for the World Para Teams event in Bratislava in May, for which he was confirmed after clinching the national title.
AFL
He will then target the world championships and the Commonwealth Games in a jam-packed 2018 schedule. A veteran at a young age, Pellissier, a business student at RMIT University, was recently inducted into the Table Tennis Victoria Para Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport. It was a proud milestone for Pellissier after devoting so much time and effort to his sport. “I was a bit surprised, but it was very humbling to see what people think of you,” Pellissier said. “I’m very grateful for what Tables Tennis Victoria has done for me. “I have been playing for a while, but didn’t think anything like that would happen at the age of 20.” Pellissier is the monthly nominee of the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/or national levels. It is hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly. Pellissier will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes, which will assist him in achieving his sports goals.
Western Bulldogs are gearing up for their opening JLT Community Series pre-season game against Melbourne at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday. It will be the Bulldogs’ first official game since winning the AFL grand final against Sydney Swans at the MCG in October. The match is part of a double-header against Melbourne at the Kennel on Saturday, with the AFL side kicking off at 4.40pm, followed by the AFL Women’s game at 7.40pm.
Lacrosse
Five local players from three western suburbs clubs have been named in the Victorian under-18 boys squad to play at the Australian Lacrosse Association national championships in April. The players are Altona’s Nick Burgess, Footscray’s Jackson Marsh and Williamstown trio Callan Gibson, Jacob Poole and Lachlan Russell. Another Altona player, Jasper Hanna-Roberts, was named as an emergency. FOR MORE SPORT, VISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Maribyrnong & Hobsons Bay Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly
