Daughters of West deliver The daughters of the west delivered a commanding display and kicked off their AFL Women’s campaign with an historic victory. Playing to a near-capacity crowd of 10,100 at Whitten Oval on Saturday night, the rampaging Western Bulldogs showed plenty of bark and bite to power home against Fremantle, chalking up a 32-point win. Emma Kearney led the charge to take best on ground honours for the Bulldogs with 23 disposals, while skipper Katie Brennan slotted home two important goals. The Saturday night telecast attracted a peak audience of 498,000 viewers, hot on the heels of the 896,000 viewers of Friday night’s AFLW opener between Carlton and Collingwood at a capacity Princes Park. The Bulldogs return to Whitten Oval at 7.35pm this Friday night to take on the Adelaide Crows. Benjamin Millar

“The Reverence isn’t for sale – the building is,” he said. “The sign was a really big shock to us. The whole talk with the current owners was that we were going to get another lease. Every chat we had with them, they were indicating we could have another five years.” Mr Bodiam, who grew up in Footscray, said he would be devastated to lose the Reverence, but would also hate to see the building torn down for redevelopment. “It would be terrible if this building was lost,” he said. “But we are definitely not closing before we have to – we would stay here forever if we could.”
The Footscray Historical Society has committed to help preserve the building, which is listed on the Heritage Council database. National Trust of Australia advocacy manager Felicity Watson said Melbourne’s pubs were increasingly under threat from residential and commercial development. “We hope that potential purchasers of ‘the Rev’ will recognise its importance to the Footscray community and to Melbourne’s music scene,” she said. If Melbourne is to uphold its reputation as a liveable city, we need to protect the places that make it vibrant and an exciting place to live.”

Music fans and heritage advocates are vowing to fight tooth and nail to protect iconic Footscray music venue the Reverence. A billboard seeking new owners, placed on the hotel on Friday, pitches the site at developers. An online listing describes the property, built in 1876 and formerly known as the Exchange, as a “fantastic freehold development” with “potential to build to up to six levels”. The pub comes with an asking price of $3.5 million, putting it out of the reach of most hotel operators.
Agent Mark Durnan said he had been told not to discuss the sale, but denied social media speculation the property had already been sold. “People are looking at it, but it’s still on the market.” Leaseholders Matt and Melanie Bodiam, who created the Reverence music venue in 2012 on a six-year lease, intend to remain until at least May, 2018, when the lease expires. Mr Bodiam said the hotel has been on the market throughout their lease, but the prominent advertising came as a surprise and created confusion for people who thought they were selling out. 1219971-HM10-16

Cherry Lake Ward Brooklyn Neighbourhood Project
Truganina Explosives Reserve
Last year, Council received $30,000 in funding from CoDesign Studio to establish three community-led projects in Brooklyn. Council matched the funding and the result has been an exciting opportunity to activate the neighbourhood of Brooklyn, bring a sense of community and fun to the local area, and help transform underutilised land into much loved community spaces. An enthusiastic group of residents has been meeting to organise these projects. Last month the project group launched a temporary dog off-leash park at Brooklyn Reserve and the installation of art in the laneway at 31A Cypress Avenue. The two initiatives will be in place until the end of March. Council will continue to work with the community group in 2017 to deliver more great projects in Brooklyn. To get involved, call Council’s Community Development team on 9932 1000.

Toyota finale signals jobs gloom By Goya Dmytryshchak More companies will start cutting jobs after Toyota last week announced it would shut its Altona plant on October 3. Toyota said about 2600 workers would lose their jobs, with the workforce to be cut from about 3900 to 1300. The company, which started making cars in Australia in 1963, first announced in 2014 that it would stop manufacturing at Altona this year, but an exact closure date was not set. The company plans to make 61,000 cars before closing, including 34,400 for export.
The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union estimates that 40,000 workers are employed by the wider manufacturing sector, including supply-chain companies. Toyota Tsusho, which has plants in Altona and Laverton North, including a subsidiary at Laverton North, told Star Weekly there will be “considerable” job losses. “That means we will be reducing the size of our business and the size of our workforce, because we are a key supplier to Toyota,” spokeswoman Ruth Anderson said. “Basically, if we cannot continue that business any more, we obviously need to downsize.
“We have multiple sites and each will be downsizing in a different degree … I couldn’t tell you individually what the number of each employees are at each site and what the effect is on that.” Toyota’s head office will be based at Port Melbourne, while its Altona site will become a training centre. Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner said the priority in coming months is to support employees in the transition period. Industry and Employment Minister Wade Noonan said the state government’s support package included $46.5 million to help
First sight opens local eyes anew It’s been a big week of television for Altona Meadows’ John Robertson, who last Sunday met his bride Deborah for the first time – at the altar – before they embarked on their honeymoon for Channel 9’s Married at First Sight. Both 53, John is a divorced retail business owner with two adult children, while Deborah is a former model from Queensland, who has never married nor had children. “I was expecting someone from the Polynesian Islands, so now I’ve got to overcome that,” Deborah says on their wedding day. Mr Roberston tells Star Weekly that, as he said during the show: “All I can be is me”. “I’m just hoping to be me and just to win her over, that’s sort of how I’m going to play it,” he said on Tuesday, before their Samoan honeymoon airs this week. The TV wedding was an emotional day for John’s daughters, Emma and Jessica. It also caused a stir in the Hobsons Bay community, with many single ladies offering to date John if the marriage doesn’t work out. “Are they really,” John says, shocked. Not only that, locals have formed a Facebook group for singles aged 40-plus as a direct result. “They haven’t, have they?” John asks in disbelief. He said the biggest changes he’s noticed since being on the show was being recognised when he’s “down The Meadows” at Central Square. “People have been fantastic,” John said. “I’m amazed that I am recognised now. “People are so nice.” While John is sworn to secrecy about the outcome of the honeymoon before it airs, cracks are starting to appear. “We are realising we are different people, I suppose, as we are going along on that honeymoon,” he said. “She’s into yoga, and as you can see if you watch that yoga – this is another embarrassing thing for me – I am so not flexible. “I just realised how unsuited I am to yoga.” Goya Dmytryshchak
supply-chain businesses and to retrain workers. “We stand ready to assist our workers as they transition from manufacturing plants across Victoria,” Mr Noonan said. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the municipality remained an important industrial and manufacturing hub. “We are working with other regional councils, as part of LeadWest, to maximise economic investment for the region,” she said. LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley joined the state government in calling on the federal government to support car-industry workers and help create jobs in the west.
Greens up ante on Distributor The Greens have threatened to join forces with the state opposition to scuttle the state government’s $5.5 billion Western Distributor unless more information is released, western suburbs MP Colleen Hartland has warned. The new toll road – a major alternative to the West Gate Bridge via twin tunnels beneath Yarraville and a new Maribyrnong River crossing – has sparked a long-running battle over transparency. Ms Hartland said the Greens would not rule out siding with the Coalition to block the proposed extension of Transurban’s toll concession on CityLink for up to 12 years, which is a major element of the toll operator’s unsolicited pitch to build the new distributor road. She said 12 more years of tolls on CityLink, and a doubling of truck tolls from April, will push more trucks onto local roads in the inner-west. “We are not on lock-step with the Libs; they have not approached us, but we are concerned about the lack of transparency both with us and with the community.” Treasurer Tim Pallas said the Western Distributor is a desperately needed second river crossing that will create a long-overdue alternative to the West Gate Bridge. “Contracts are set to be signed by the end of the year, with the new tunnel and freeway completed, and slashing traffic congestion, by 2022,” he said. The state government released its business case on the project in 2015, but Ms Hartland said it had left many questions about the project unanswered.

Women shine in business Inner-west women wanting to kickstart new businesses are being offered the chance to shine, thanks to a new scholarship. Footscray-based women-in-business organisation She Will Shine is offering 10 $2200 scholarships to female start-up founders who live in Maribyrnong and who have been in business for less than two years. She Will Shine founder Danielle Price said the scholarships, backed by Maribyrnong council, include access to mentoring, educational workshops, online resources and support from a group of like-minded female business owners. Ms Price said getting support in the first two years of business is crucial, whether women are creating a business from a shopfront or home.
“I think it’s important because we do business differently, we need connections.” Ms Price said she had founded She Will Shine as a way to reach out to other women facing the same challenges. Footscray resident Bec Heelan said becoming a She Will Shine member in 2015 had helped grow her personal training business. “She Will Shine is a social hub … but it’s also a professional organisation with so much opportunity to upskill.” Scholarship information sessions will be held at The Dream Factory, 90 Maribyrnong Street, Footscray, 1.30pm, February 13 and 14. Fine dodgers caught out again By Goya Dmytryshchak More than 70 motorists owing $129,000 in unpaid fines were caught in a Sheriff’s blitz at Altona Meadows last week. Western region police and Sheriff officers established a road block in Queen Street last Wednesday, netting 72 fine evaders representing 236 outstanding warrants. The officers used automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to scan the number plates of cars for disqualified
or unlicensed drivers, unregistered or stolen vehicles, and vehicles associated with outstanding warrants or unpaid fines. Forty-six people with 139 fines between them paid up a total of $51,000 on the day. Eight drivers had their wheels clamped and had to arrange payments to get their vehicles back. Nineteen drivers with 110 warrants worth more than $45,000 were given seven days to arrange payments or have their licences or registrations suspended. It was the second time in less than three

Ballarat Road’s homeless hope By Benjamin Millar A formerly homeless woman has issued a passionate plea to residents fighting against a new housing project to reconsider their position. Not-for-profit agency Launch Housing has applied to Maribyrnong council to locate 57 new one-bedroom townhouses in nine Ballarat Road locations across Footscray and Maidstone. Jacqui, a Launch Housing tenant who has experienced homelessness, last week spoke at
the first of two community meetings being held to address the proposal and the need for such accommodation. “I am more like the typical person you will find homeless than you may be seeing in the media,” she said. “I am over the age of 35, I was in a domestic violence situation and it was not by choice. It took six times to get out of that.” Encouraging people to consider the human face of homelessness, Jacqui said it was highly humiliating to need to ask for help. “Having to front up to a service is incredibly disempowering, disenfranchising,” she said.
“We’ve portrayed people who are homeless as this one large group who have made a series of really bad decisions. “But each and every one of us has a story of our own and each and every one of us needs to find housing. To me, having a place that I knew was safe and secure was so important … it is so hard to crack into the private rental market.” About 50 people attended Tuesday night’s meeting at RecWest in West Footscray. Opponents of the units cited concerns about parking, social pressures and the potential for reduced property values.
Launch Housing deputy chief executive officer Heather Holst said she appreciated there were a number of perspectives on the project, but she said there were many misconceptions. “Housing affordability is one of the big issues of our time and more and more people are being caught in that wedge,” she said. “We’re about having a range of options so we can match people up.” Two of the nine applications have been approved. The remaining seven will be considered by councillors at a future council meeting.
Love marks a century A deep love for dance and close connections with family have helped colour Mela World’s 100 years. Mela celebrated her 100th birthday on January 25 with family and friends at Westhaven Community aged-care in Footscray. The eldest of four siblings, she grew up in the eastern suburbs, but has happily settled into Footscray to be closer to family. Grand-daughter Ellen Spalding said Mela still enjoyed her regular jaunts to local shops and cafes. “There’s lots of enjoyment in that simple stuff, enjoying Footscray,” she said. Ms Spalding credits her grandmother’s longevity to keeping active. “She’s always been incredibly active – dancing has been a really big part of her life,” Ms Spalding said. “She was an incredible gardener, a great cook, handy at making things and selling it at markets.”
Ms Spalding said her grandmother had always been a strong and positive person. “It’s all about family,” she said. “As things have dropped off in her life, what’s left is just this love for her family that gets purer and purer.” Over the course of her life, Mela has become a mother to two children, grandmother to three grand-daughters and now a great-grandmother to two great-grandsons. “We’re a close family – she’s a beautiful grand-daughter,” Mela said of Ms Spalding. “I love her very much, but she’s a bit of a tell-tale.” Benjamin Millar Ellen Spalding with her grandmother, Mela World, who celebrated her 100th birthday. Vanish claim on Seaholme PSOs By Goya Dmytryshchak Concerns have been raised about protective service officers assigned to Seaholme train station vanishing. Police Minister Lisa Neville visited Seaholme to congratulate the new team of PSOs on their deployment last May from 6pm to the last train. But nearby resident and frequent commuter Maree Maxfield claims there have been none in recent times and that her daughter had feared for her safety because of an incident involving a man on the platform.
She said a police officer had advised her that the PSOs could be redeployed anywhere and that just because the government had assigned them to a station, didn’t mean that they would be there. “They said they could be called anywhere and would just leave the station,” Ms Maxfield said. “Because our station was quiet, chances are they would be sent to a different one quite often. “I didn’t think that was the idea of the PSO being assigned to stations that was put forward by the government. I said that it compromised [my daughter’s] safety when she thought she

was coming home to a station where there were PSOs when she got off.” Victoria Police spokeswoman Sara-Jane Delaney said PSOs were still stationed at Seaholme station from 6pm until the last train. “If you don’t see the PSOs, they could be undertaking a range of duties, such as
patrolling the carpark or handing over persons to be processed by police officers,” she said. “On occasion, there is a possibility that other priorities, such as increased patronage at Altona railway station in hot weather and unplanned leave such as sick leave, may restrict PSO availability at Seaholme.” Altona Loop Group spokeswoman Jennifer Williams said all public transport users should feel safe, particularly at night. “There should be a staff presence at stations across the network, including Seaholme station,” she said.
New app reviews business A 27-year-old Williamstown entrepreneur has launched his first start-up, the Chekd app, which aims to ensure reviews of local businesses are the most reliable on the market. Ryan Danaher said the idea was born of the realisation that people believe current review apps were biased and untrustworthy. “The main thing about the app is that the key aspects of a place – for example, for a cafe, the coffee, food, price and service – they’re all rated out of numbers, rather than writing a review. “Ours is a lot simpler. You can review all those key things of a place in less than five seconds. “It’s a little bit of a tweak of an idea I had about six years ago. The original idea was to have live data, so you would know how many people were in a restaurant at a certain time, so you could book it based on that. “The same thing applied to nightclubs and
bars and what not … but I quickly found out that that was illegal – it’s illegal to track people without their permission, and in order to get live data you’d need everybody, rather than just the people who approve it. “But once I did the research to figure that out, I sort of stumbled across the fact that a lot of people find current reviewing applications quite untrustworthy and quite unreliable. “We are just trying to sell simplicity more than anything else.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Double up at Joseph Place Plans have been unveiled for a group of four towers soaring up to 24 storeys above a former industrial Footscray site. The proposal for 577 new apartments at 2 Neilson Place features a podium topped by four residential towers, including 230 one-bed, 274 two-bed and 73 three-bed dwellings. The site on the north-west corner of Maribyrnong Street and Neilson Place is currently occupied by two former industrial buildings that are now vacant. If approved, the $180 million project by property developer Frank Palazzo would be the final piece in the high density Joseph Place jigsaw, bringing the number of approved or proposed dwellings in the riverside precinct to almost 4000. Its development would be staged, taking two years to commence and a further five years to complete. A planning report by urban planners Urbis states the extra 577 dwellings will help generate the critical mass of people needed to sustain the revitalisation of the Joseph Road precinct. It notes the project also includes 6500 square metres of communal spaces and 572 parking places. The report justifies the doubling of Maribyrnong council’s preferred height limit of 12 storeys by referring to the height of surrounding projects. “Given the context, the towers are designed to respond to approved developments to the west, at No. 4 Neilson Place, to the east at No.

2 Hopkins Street, and to the south at No. 8 Hopkins Street,” the report states. “The tower heights … provide an appropriate transition amongst adjoining development, and respond to its context.”
Where do old traffic lights go when they die? One disused set that was destined for the scrap heap has been given a new lease on life teaching children in Williamstown about road safety. Kids by the Bay children’s centre approached VicRoads last year with a request for material that could help educate their pre-schoolers. VicRoads acting regional director Scott Lawrence said the decommissioned traffic lights had been installed on the centre’s grounds, with the pedestrian signals teaching children how and when to cross the road. “We’re really pleased these traffic lights are now helping teach local children about crossing the road safely,” he said. Bombers hit by burglars By Benjamin Millar Intruders have broken into a Maribyrnong house where four footballers were sleeping, stealing their wallets and cars. Three Essendon AFL footballers and a VFL player had their cars stolen in the aggravated burglary in Hillside Crescent soon after 4am last Friday. The offenders stole wallets and the keys to a Mazda, two Holden Commodores and a Volkswagen. The victims were AFL-listed players Shaun McKernan, Jayden Laverde and Connor
McKenna , as well as James Ferry, who plays for the Bombers’ VFL team. Inspector Steve Cooper said the offenders would not have known who they were burgling. “I would suggest the offence is just random,” he said. Police said the thieves arrived at the property in a stolen Toyota Camry, which has since been recovered in Como Parade, Maribyrnong. The crashed Volkswagen was recovered in nearby Duffy Street. The Commodores were found in Macquarie Road, Wyndham Vale, and Clement Street, Melton South, on Sunday.
The silver Mazda has not yet been found. Three teenage boys, two aged 15 and a 16-year-old, were arrested on Sunday in Wyndham Vale and charged with the theft of the silver Commodore. They were remanded in custody to face a children’s court on Monday. They have not been charged with the burglary. Essendon Football Club said the players were assisting police with their investigation and were being offered support. – with The Age

“Poetry requires you to be really precise about what you want to say or convey to a reader.” Carrying the World features a series of personal reflections on Clarke’s lived experiences and encounters. She says poetry still seems to be viewed by many as an inaccessible ‘high art’, but she considers her poems a form of story-telling with which people can readily connect. “I’m surprised poetry hasn’t made a bit of a comeback, now that we are consuming things in increasingly short forms … things like social media,” Clarke said. “It seems to be a logical form in terms of how little time we have.” Carrying the World is out now through Hachette Australia.

The power of poetry to say a lot with a little has long attracted Yarraville writer Maxine Beneba Clarke. Fifteen years after she began playing with the words craft, she has taken out the coveted prize for poetry in the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards with Carrying the World, her third published collection. Clarke was also shortlisted in the non-fiction category for The Hate Race, her memoir about growing up in middle-class suburbia as an Australian of Afro-Caribbean descent. She is no stranger to the awards, taking out the award for an unpublished manuscript in 2013 with a collection of short stories, Foreign Soil. Clarke, who began as a spoken-word artist, credits her time spent crafting poems as an important part of her progression as a writer.

Plans in for Fresno Street A developer has lodged plans to transform an Altona street by replacing 10 single-storey villa units with 14 predominantly three-storey townhouses. Bardin Planning Co-ordination has applied to redevelop 4-22 Fresno Street, which is opposite Altona Tennis Club and several sporting ovals. Some members of the Altona Community Action Group have expressed concern about the proposal, labelling it a “gross overdevelopment” and claiming it will set a precedent for three storey developments across Altona. Plans show provision for 14 double garages in a
basement car park, which represents a shortfall of two visitor spaces, as required by planning guidelines. A traffic report prepared for the applicant states the anticipated traffic generation would have a negligible impact on the safety or operation of Fresno Street, Chifley Avenue and the surrounding road network. The owner, Brian Noordenne of Noordenne Nominees, said he would prefer not to comment until Hobsons Bay council has made its decision.

MY PLACE Williamstown’s Patsy Toop retired as a lawyer to pursue a country music career. Now, as one of half of the duo, The Long and Short of It, her latest album is sitting above one of Keith Urban’s on the charts. She speaks to Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay” I’ve lived there all my life, born and bred in Hobsons Bay. I’m passionate about ensuring that the community has great assets, such as Seaworks, and that our heritage is maintained and preserved and protected. What do you love about Williamstown?
(Damjan Janevski)
What isn’t there to love about Williamstown? I love the eclectic buildings, because it was a working class fishing sort of village and then it was affected by the gold rush, and all of those very quaint cottages and large-scale homes, and the fact that, because it was a working-class suburb, a large portion of our forefathers’ history has been preserved in the buildings. I think that’s amazing. Aside from the magnificent views and the sea and everything that goes with it … I think that’s probably the thing that I find most attractive. What would you change?
What’s your favourite cafe or eatery? I really like the new coffee shop, Mez Mez. In
terms of eating, the one that I like going to is Raguza. Mez Mez has great coffee and Raguza has really good food – it’s Croatian food. I love it; it’s great. In fact the guy who runs that restaurant, Movida, in the city, it’s one of his favourites as well. Can you tell me about your country music career and how it is going – you’re sitting

Then we went down to Tasmania and took out the Tasmanian Independent Music Awards as most popular duo. And then in Tamworth this January, we won the Independent Country Music Awards for most popular duo. The icing on the cake is to have our album, which was released in October, in the ARIA charts.
Isn’t that amazing. But not completely – only one of his albums. His most recent one is still above us at No. 3, but we’re certainly above him with two of his albums that are not going as well. The Long and Short of It had an amazing year last year. We won the Southern Star awards in Victoria, which is for best duo or group.

I think Williamstown should remain a low-level suburb and that we should not really have significant high-rise development in the heritage village. I see it as a beautiful village that is easily accessible, where everyone has great views, and I just don’t think that it’s really appropriate to overdevelop it into this sort of Docklands style … it’s not suitable for that and it ought to remain an historical township.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a new reason to love Asian fusion … Asian fusion? We’ve been won over, particularly by West of Kin at Braybrook. But there, the food is ambitious and the tone quite flash. At Cheeky Chewies, a bright new arrival at Laverton, the vibe is more everyday cafe, with asking prices to match – there’s nothing above $20 and most of the more hefty dishes clock up about $16. Actually, while Cheeky Chewies is self-described as offering “Asian fusion”, truth is this place is more about mixing, on the one hand, Western-style fare (a parma, fish and chips) with, on the other, pretty much straight-up Asian offerings. Over two lunches on successive days, Bennie and I eat very well, with only a couple of minor flat spots. Service is top-notch. On our first visit, we tackle a bunch of the small dish offerings on the menu. Chilli wontons (five for $10) are dynamite, the delicate casings housing lovely pork mince filling, with a zingy vinegar chilli sauce. Super Crispy Chicken Wings (four for $8.90) are more wingettes, but are excellent. Nothing flash is served here – simply superbly cooked, unoily chook. My heart sank a little when I saw a bottle sweet chilli sauce, but thankfully that jam-like concoction is served on the side, and is ignored. Cheezy Pumpkin Bags (three for $8) display the same expert frying, but we detect none of the advertised cheesiness – just pumpkin. And the dipping sauce tastes like plain old
CHEEKY CHEWIES CAFE Address: 18 Aviation Road, Laverton Phone: 9369 9913 mayo, though we’re told it’s “homemade honey mustard sauce”. The lesson here, I suspect, is never order anything involving pumpkin. The What-A-Burger ($16.90) is okay, the nice slab of pork having a good lemongrass kick. But for the price, this offering seems a little austere when there are so many high-powered burger options across the west at similar prices. The Cheeky Chewies nasi lemak ($14.90) is wonderful – better, fresher and more interesting than in regulation Malaysian eateries. If there’s one thing that prevents nasi lemak being as popular with us as, say, pho or Hainan chicken rice, it is the inclusion of anchovies. Invariably, they seem stale, nasty blemishes. Here at Cheeky Chewies, they are prepared in-house and the result is winning. The sticky chunk of chook rendang is fine, but the real triumph is the house-made sambal. It’s only mildly spicy, but has a rich, deep flavour with a touch of smokiness. Our Thai-style pork/noodle salad ($14.90) is excellently fresh with just the right mix of chilli and lemon. The cafe lattes ($3.90) are superb. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

Bright and contemporary on the inside, this appealing abode has floorboards throughout, high ceilings, white wall paint and judiciously used polished concrete features in just the right places. Three good-sized bedrooms share a bathroom with polished concrete floor and wall treatment, feature glass bricks, a white vanity unit, modern showerheads over a fully tiled tub, and a laundry. A living room with wood heater adjoins the kitchen, which has snazzy red cabinetry, some polished concrete highlights and opaque-glass overheads, plus the full suite of mod-cons. Double sliders open to a large timber deck under a mature tree and rimmed with planter boxes. Within a short walk of Yarraville West Primary School and the vibrant village here, the property also has solar panels, a garden shed and a concrete driveway to park two cars. Approved plans exist for a new residence.
A two-minute drive will have you at Highpoint shopping centre, Maribyrnong College and Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre. This sprawling property has room to spare for a large family. There are three living zones of the kind that families value, one of which is a huge games room. The contemporary kitchen has a stack of storage, a brekkie bench, glass splashback, dual ovens and a dishwasher. Of the four large bedrooms, the main has a walk-in robe and an en suite with a tub. There’s a study or fifth bedroom, while four toilets are spread out over the two levels – a boon for a bigger family. Roman blinds dress most windows and there’s heating and cooling. The property has a double garage with extra storage/workshop space.

Price: $740,000 – $800,000
Tuck your family behind a white picket fence and live the dream within a 10-minute amble of Greenwich Reserve, Bay Trail West and foreshore. Williamstown North Primary School is a two-minute drive away. This one has heritage pointers, such as decorative cornices and picture rails bisecting two-tone paintwork, as well as oak floorboards throughout. The two good-sized bedrooms (with built-in robes) share a bright bathroom, with the laundry is separate. A sunroom at the back would make a great study or morning room. An inviting lounge room has a period-style cast-iron fireplace and surround (and there’s ducted heating), while the kitchen adjoining a meals zone has ample cupboards and stainless-steel under-bench oven and gas cooktop. The north-east facing back verandah looks out to a leafy backyard with brick paving and there’s side lane access.

A façade oozing charm and warmth welcomes you as you approach this Newport gem. Multi-paned windows create a country-in-the-city atmosphere and green foliage growing around the front verandah beams frame an immaculate front yard and well-maintained deck. Parquetry flooring leads to a traditional sitting room to the left. Bulk-head ceiling perimeters suggest quality workmanship of a bygone era. A gas heater with traditional Edwardian surround has been added. In here, enjoy the morning sun from the east and, of an evening, relax away from the heat of the day.

Auction: February 18 at 2.30pm To the right, the library has floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, ladder and well-maintained original fireplace featuring olive-green tiling and an ornate surround with turned wood florets. Carpeted stairs lead to a skylit landing. Here the main bathroom and five bedrooms are found, all with multi-paned windows (most dormer) and solid timber doors with original brass fittings. The main bedroom has a parent retreat space and walk-through twin wardrobes leading to a modern, fully tiled en suite with full-length glass shower and twin bowl basins atop floating vanity unit.
The main bathroom is contemporary in style, with a white 2pac floating vanity, heated towel rail and bath with shower. The living hub on the ground floor is open and bright, with French doors flooding open-plan family living with light. The kitchen has timber benchtops with a built-in granite chopping block, while plenty of storage opposite complements the walk-in pantry. A huge laundry behind the kitchen leads to a powder room. Opposite the kitchen is a dedicated office with twin, built-in desks – this could also serve as the sixth bedroom. Other features include a split-system,

water tank, brick-paved utility area, workshop with attached storage area and a wood shed. Primary and secondary schools (government and private) are within easy reach and the waterfront is a leisurely 10-minute stroll away. This romantic home is a great entertainer, with French and sliding doors opening to a return deck, grassed area and fenced, solar-heated pool ringed by decking. Mature trees add to the ambience and there is off-street parking for two cars. Sam Freestone

PRAYER TO THE VIRGIN MARY (Never known to fail) O most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendour of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour in my necessity (mention your request). There are none that can withstand your power. O show me here you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). O Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Thank you for mercy toward me and mine. AMEN. Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you.

Ron and Jacqui Hammerton test the Audi A4 TFSI Sport
HE SAYS
SHE SAYS
A
W
udi’s designers could not be accused of taking outrageous liberties with the exterior of the latest A4. Their theme seems to have been “status quo”. But beneath the familiar skin is the most extensive makeover in the car’s history, starting with all-new lightweight architecture and suspension systems. Bigger in most dimensions than its predecessor, the A4 is nevertheless about 65 kilograms lighter. Our test car was the mid-range front-wheel-drive 2.0-litre turbo petrol TFSI Sport automatic that can speed to 100km/h in about 7.2 seconds – similar to Mercedes-Benz’s C200 and BMW’s 320i. The Audi is bigger inside than those cars, plus a smidgeon more affordable. But it’s less composed under hard acceleration. You could step up to Audi’s all-wheel-drive grip, but that requires an extra $9000 for the 2.0 Quattro. A wise investment, however, is the optional adaptive comfort damper system that takes the sting out of the firm suspension.
e’re so used to customising our electronic devices that personalising a dashboard is a no-brainer … so thumbs up for the instrument options in the A4’s virtual cockpit, showing the way of the future. You can choose to have your sat-nav map display front and centre, flanked by the speedo and other gauges, or vice-versa. A knob and a couple of buttons on the centre console operate the audio and phone on an iPad-like screen. It’s all very snazzy, functional and kind of familiar, so cheers to the Audi TT sports car for paving the way. The Audi’s interior is also sophisticated. The finish is exemplary and the rear seat leg room is the biggest in its class, thanks to an efficient front-wheel-drive layout. On the outside, the design might be status quo, but it is still stylish and appealing. Easy to drive, equally powerful and sweet, it’s not hard to feel right at home here.
B Y T H E N UM B E R S

SPORT Lacrosse ‘super six’ take on the world Footscray Lacrosse Club stars will occupy almost a third of the spots on the Australian women’s national team travelling to England in July for the 2017 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup. The Bulldogs’ “super six” – Abbie Burgess, Verity Clough, Stella Justice-Allen, Sarah Mollison, Theodora Kwas and Rebecca Lane – will pit their talents against the world’s best, having the ultimate honour of donning the green and gold. To have such high representation from one club is an incredible feat … Footscray president Tim Lane said the players will be a credit to their local community. “We wish the players all the best for the World Cup, and in the lead-up, we really hope that the local community gets behind our players as they start preparing,” Lane said. “I know that all of the Footscray women
will represent the Maribyrnong community – Footscray Lacrosse Club, Lacrosse Victoria and the Australia Lacrosse Association – with the highest level of integrity. “This is a great moment for these players.” In all, there will be 10 western suburbs-linked players in the team. Four players from Newport – Bree Hussey, Rachel Kirchheimer, Hayley Sofarnos and Stephanie McNamara – will be jetting off to Europe, alongside the Footscray six. Following the World Cup, the team will travel to Poland to compete at the 2017 International World Games.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The Bourke Street tragedy rocked everyone in Melbourne, and it hit close to home. Former Werribee Tigers’ captain and 100-game player Trent Churchill was one of those injured. Trent was struck on his left side and hospitalised with serious leg injuries. He is on the mend and, by the time you read this, should be out of hospital, recovering at home. While he admits there are many worse off than him, the trauma of the day will linger long after his injuries heal. The support and wishes he has received from former teammates and Tigers’ supporters have helped him enormously. Anyone who knows Trent knows what a ripper bloke he is, and that he will give 110 per cent to his recovery.

■ Another former Tiger great Daryl Taylor was recently named in the Northern Territory Wanderers’ Team of the Century, a huge honour. Daryl used the VFL off season to head north, kicking bags of goals in the NTFL. Daryl’s pilgrimages to Darwin became Werribee folklore, and his stories got bigger with each year. He played some outstanding football in the tropics, adding premierships, best and fairest and leading goal-kicking awards to his achievements at Chirnside Park, where he played 75 games and kicked 194 goals, topping the seniors goal-kicking on two occasions. A well deserved accolade, Daryl.
Hot Dogs in super win By Lance Jenkinson The Western Bulldogs have made an immediate mark on the new AFL women’s competition with a 32-point drubbing of the Fremantle Dockers before a good crowd at Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday night. It was the most impressive performance of the eight sides in action at the weekend and it already has the pundits talking up the Bulldogs as the team to beat in the inaugural competition. A competitive opening term saw the Bulldogs lead by two goals to one at quarter-time. Kirsten McLeod took two bounces and ran into an open goal to record the historic first major for the Bulldogs in the new competition. Jaimee Lambert then goaled to give the Dogs some breathing space at the first change. From quarter-time onwards, it was all one-way traffic. The Bulldogs restricted the visitors to just five behinds for the remaining
three quarters and kicked four goals of their own. The Bulldogs were totally dominant in the midfield. Tiana Ersnt offered the Dogs’ onballers first use with a game-high 19 hit-outs in the ruck. She was physical at the contest, creating space for her teammates and working hard defensively. Emma Kearney, the leading possession winner on the day with 14 kicks and nine handballs, feasted on the silver service from Ernst. Kearney was far and away the best midfielder on the ground, bursting out of packs untouched and constantly driving the Bulldogs into attack. Lambert, Ellie Blackburn and Brooke Lochland won plenty of the ball at the stoppages, but they had to be brave in doing so, with the Dockers testing them out physically. It was a rollercoaster first-up game for Bulldogs captain Katie Brennan.
56 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 8, 2017
The big-name player in the Bulldogs line-up was hardly seen in the first quarter, but that was a mere aberration. From the second term onwards, Brennan was at her very best, collecting 16 possessions to go with six tackles, four marks and two goals. Her work rate forward of centre was a sight to behold. McLeod and Rebecca Neaves fought hard to keep the ball inside the attacking 50 for the Bulldogs. At the other end, Libby Birch impressed across half-back. A big night in Bulldogs history was topped off by a standing ovation for Susan Alberti, an influential figure at both the Western Bulldogs and in the creation of the AFL women’s competition. The Bulldogs will be back at the Whitten Oval on Friday night for the second of four consecutive home games when they will host the Adelaide Crows under lights from 7.35pm.
■ It was a good round for bowlers in the local subbies games recently, with Shannon Clarke of Altona grabbing the spotlight with 7/20, closely followed by Williamstown’s Craig Sheedy with 5/45, Akshat Buch from Yarraville with 4/17 and Matthew Watt of Werribee with 4/12. Kevin Hillier

■ Williamstown sits pretty comfortably on the top of sub district’s East West 1st X1 ladder at the moment. On Sunday, February 26, at Point Gellibrand, it holds its past players day and a reunion for the 2016-17 premiership team, which boasted some pretty big local cricket names, including coach Stephen Sandri, skipper Craig Sheedy, Daryl Clemson, Cain Speakman, Ben Davis, Paul Knight, Mark Brown, Graham Murdoch, Nick Jensen, Tony Freeman, and Bill Fowler. Rohan Smith – who showed he’s a very handy cricketer – missed the championship final due to football, and Cameron Smith was injured. Past players will bring the creams out for a 30-over game against the Crusaders X1.

Bulldogs cruise back into top eight Footscray Edgewater is back in Premier Cricket’s top eight after a second consecutive win. The Bulldogs cruised to a 118-run victory over Carlton at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday, led by a remarkable innings from opener Greg Munro. Munro amassed 175 off 236 balls, smashing 21 fours and five sixes all around the ground. It not totally surprising Munro made such a big score –it’s been a feast or famine season. It was Munro’s second century of the summer, to go with two half centuries, but this was by far the biggest of the lot and one of the most important knocks of his career, considering what was at stake for the Bulldogs. Munro’s biggest partnership came with captain Dylan Kight, who made 65 not out off 172 balls. Munro and Kight got together with the Bulldogs on 4-137, chasing Carlton’s 216 and piling on 178 for the fifth wicket. The other notable batsman was Hayden Butterworth, with 42 off 62, but this was undoubtedly Munro’s party. Footscray Edgewater heads into the penultimate round in eighth spot, but has a conga-line of teams waiting for them to slip up. The Bulldogs will be out to cause an upset against ladder-leader Camberwell Magpies in
a two-day game at Camberwell sports ground. In sub-district cricket, Williamstown put up an imposing 8-316 on day one of a two-day game against Croydon at Croydon Oval. The standout for the top-of-the-table Seagulls was No. 5 batsman Mitchell Streiff, who made 104. Streiff followed up from his score of 75 not out a week earlier, and is one of the in-form batsmen in the competition. Craig Sheedy (42) and Matthew Twentyman (39) were also helpful hands for the Seagulls. Yarraville now faces a victory target of 241 on the second day away at Melton, while Altona, which made just 126, fought back to have Mount Waverley 3-35 at stumps. In the VTCA senior division, Spotswood won a closely fought battle over Keilor by two runs at Donald McLean Reserve. Chasing 193 for victory, the Woodsmen were in all sorts of trouble at 9-161, but a 10th wicket partnership between Ashley Robertson (78no) and Andrew Butler (14) got them home. The Woodsmen moved to within one point of top side Yarraville Club, which was beaten by 50 runs at home to Greenvale Kangaroos, despite 64 to Justin Baker. Lance Jenkinson
Jon Deeble is hoping to lead Melbourne Aces to their first ABL championship. (Matt King/Getty Images)
Deeble aiming for Aces high Jon Deeble is getting the job done at home and abroad. The Sunshine-raised super coach has been working his magic for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League, turning them from easybeats to the team to beat in the space of one season. The well-respected 54-year-old has been part of the coaching panels at two MLB clubs in the United States and has four championship rings in that time – three with the Boston Red Sox and one with the Florida Marlins (now Miami Marlins). Deeble is about to embark on a new adventure in the US after signing on as a director with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Deeble is also coach of the Australian national baseball team. “I coach our Australian Olympic team and have been to three Olympics with the team,” Deeble said. “We’ve got the World Baseball Classic coming up in March.” More pressing for Deeble is the ABL championship series. The Aces will host the showpiece event for the first time since the league was reformed in the 2010-11 season. After securing their first minor premiership, the Aces will take part in their first ABLCS since 2011-12, when they lost to Perth Heat. Expect Melbourne Ballpark to be rocking this weekend as the Aces aim to break their title drought in a three-game series against the Brisbane Bandits starting on Friday night.

City women return By Lance Jenkinson Altona City was a pioneers of women’s soccer in the west. It was only five years ago that City featured in the Women’s Premier League – the top-flight competition at the time. To the disappointment of the City membership, the former committee pulled the plug on the women’s team and the players went their separate ways to new clubs. According to Altona City president Joe Tanti, the club couldn’t sustain the team. “It wasn’t feasible any more, the club was struggling, we weren’t really competitive on the field, Tanti said. “There were a lot of upset people, but the former committee did what they thought was right at the time.”
A lot has changed in four years at Altona City. A new committee has taken over, the club is financially stable and it has a growing junior base and a successful men’s set-up. And now the long wait is over for the re-kindling of the women’s team. “At the time when we first started with our women’s team, we were one of the main players,” Tanti said. “Our girls in the premier league were even playing on TV every now and then. It’s exciting to have them back. “We welcome as many female players as we can … we’ve got a fair few in the juniors, but we want to make that step and start the senior team.” Altona City has appointed Mark Pellington
as coach of the women’s team for its return season. Pellington has coached at junior level in the past and is ready to step up to the senior ranks. City is putting the call out to players in the west who are interested in pulling on their boots this season. Tanti knows City will not thrive unless it fills the massive void that exists at the club. “We needed to get the team back because we know what they contributed to the club,” he said. “They bring a different vibe, a bit more excitement, so we need it around the club and we’re ready to go.” Altona City trains and plays out of HC Kim Reserve in Altona. Riders returned to Altona’s Drake Boulevard on Sunday for race two of Footscray Cycling Club’s four-race Beach Road Cycles Summer Series. On a wide circuit, Footscray club champion Dominik Dudkiewicz made it 32 consecutive wins after leaving behind a five-man break in the last 10 minutes. Dudkiewicz, Adam Murchie, Travis Small, Miles DaCosta and David Newett worked hard to dump a hard-chasing bunch, until Dudkiewicz seized the chance to go solo. Newett took the bunch sprint from Murchie. In B-Grade, Geelong rider Josh Williams narrowly won over Footscray’s Joe Bury, the pair combining with third-placed Steven Moses for a late break, holding off the bunch until the end. Dan Purcell took his second consecutive win in C-grade from Henry Dietze and Matt Nelson, and in D Grade, Tam Nguyen took the win from Robert Raats and Damian Bevilacqua. In the women’s novice grade, Gina McVicar won over Jenny Erickson and Vanessa Sheils, and now leads the series. Mark Micallef
