Williamstown’s Vedran Drakulic was 30 in 1992 when war broke out in Bosnia, and it was only thanks to his work with Red Cross that he got out alive. Now the former refugee has been honoured with a Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to the community through charitable organisations. “I often say that Red Cross saved my life because, if I didn’t work for the Red Cross, I probably would have ended up in the army and then got killed,” he said. “It’s not an exaggeration – I’m positive about that because I often say I have no friends from my generation in Sarajevo … they either left like I did or they were killed in the war. “In the war, I lost my only brother. He was killed as a civilian victim very early in the war when there was a lot of shellings of the city – indiscriminate, just they start shelling and people die.” Mr Drakulic left Sarajevo, while it was under siege, in 1995. His current role is chief executive of Gandel Philanthropy, a private family foundation that provides grants to Jewish and other causes. He is also on the advisory committee of the Gandel Holocaust Studies Program for Australian Educators. “People and the society should not forget … breaches of human rights can very quickly escalate from being just simple breaches to serious crimes against humanity,” he said. “We have to be upstanders rather than bystanders.” Aside from his ‘day job’, Mr Drakulic’s Australia Day honour recognises his volunteer work at organisations including International Social Service Australia, of which he is president and which supports families in cases of parental child abduction across borders. He’s also on the board of Adult Multicultural Education Services and the committee of management of the Hobsons Bay Community Fund. “That’s really at the grassroots level here in the local community, which is, for me, very, very fulfilling to be able to give back in the local community as well,” he said. Mr Drakulic said it was very humbling and inspiring to be recognised on Australia Day. “Coming to this country as a refugee, I was given a second chance at another life, and both my wife and I, and our daughter now, we look at Australia as our home country … we want to give back,” he said. “I would really dedicate this to every refugee that comes to this country and makes a new life … but also makes Australia the wonderful country that we live in.”

Assault, home break-in link query By Goya Dmytryshchak Police doorknocked an Altona Meadows street and raided a Tarneit home on Friday as part of an investigation into an assault that has left a man still unable to walk three months later. A 34-year-old Fawkner man had both legs broken during an assault by a group of males after he visited an Oakdene Grove South house about noon on October 15. Two days earlier, the house had been subject to a home invasion by up to 10 armed men. Detective Senior Constable Michael
Ditchman, of Hobsons Bay crime investigations unit, said police believe the two incidents are linked. He said police interviewed a 34-year-old man living at the house in relation to the assault, but he was released pending further inquiries. On Friday morning, police executed a search warrant at a house in Bonica Street, Tarneit, and questioned a 38-year-old man. He was also released pending further inquiries. Detective Senior Constable Ditchman said that during the October 13 aggravated
burglary, eight to 10 men armed with weapons had forced their way into the Oakdene Grove South house. A man and woman at the home jumped over the back fence and hid in their neighbour’s backyard while the men ransacked their house. The detective said that two days later, on October 15, the 34-year-old man from Fawkner arrived at the house. “He’s known to the occupants of that house,” he said. “He’s received serious injuries during an incident at that house.
“He’s still trying to recover. “He still can’t walk. He had broken legs. “We believe there’s some sort of link between both incidents.” Five males were arrested over the aggravated burglary, and three have been charged. A 20-year-old Oakleigh man, a 20-year-old Dandenong North man and a 16-year-old Keysborough boy were charged. Their offences included aggravated burglary and theft of a motor vehicle. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
‘Kids’ brawl in Williamstown
Laneway Festival performers, clockwise from left: Tame Impala, White Lung, Tash Sultana, Tycho, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. (Benjamin Millar)
The fast lane to musical nirvana Thousands of music fans turned out in Footscray on Saturday to enjoy a jam-packed St Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Nestled along the banks of the Maribyrnong River, the festival offered its now familiar blend of rising hip-hop talent, breakthrough dance acts, powerful female artists and psychedelic festival stalwarts. Emerging local stars Camp Cope and Tash Sultana were early highlights, followed
by a blistering set from White Lung, a crowd-pleasing performance by Car Seat Headrest and a politically-charged outing by A.B. Original. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard thundered through their festival-honed set before Sampa the Great had the crowd captivated with her energetic show. Mick Jenkins showed why he is regarded as one of hip-hop’s most welcome new voices
before Nick Murphy, stepping out from behind his Chet Faker alter-ego, had the crowd eating out of his hands. Tame Impala closed out the day to a packed and adoring audience, a confetti storm erupting over their swirling psych groove at the climax of pulsing sing-along stomper Let it Happen.
A pack of youths hurled abuse at police as fighting spilled onto the streets of Williamstown on Australia Day. Police were called as teenagers clashed at Williamstown Botanic Gardens on Giffard Street about 8.30pm on Thursday. Williamstown resident and 3AW producer Brianna Travers witnessed the fight, which marred Australia Day celebrations in the area. She said up to 100 youths were involved. “[There were] lots of distressed kids, many who were underage,” she said. “They were drinking, being rowdy, yelling and verbally abusing cops. “One kid was hit with a bottle to the eye – he was bleeding from that.” Williamstown resident Vlad Djuric said youths vandalised his car, causing hundreds of dollars worth of damage. “They ripped off and destroyed the rear boot lid and spoiler,” he said. Mr Djuric, who lives about five minutes walk from the Williamstown Botanic Gardens, believes the damage to his Mitsubishi Legnum is valued at about $1200. “It’s not right how youths just think they can get away with anything,” he said. “They have no respect for people’s hard work and property.” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the group’s members were mostly aged between 16 and 18. “Police were called to reports of a group fighting in Williamstown about 8.25pm [on Australia Day],” the spokeswoman said. “The group of youths was located near the Esplanade. After police attended the group dispersed. No arrests were made.” – The Age

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU The efforts of local heroes from Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong were recognised in civic honours marking Australia Day 2017 …
Our people, our place
A city of great service
Williamstown’s local hero Ralph Humphries is Hobsons Bay’s Citizen of the Year, while fellow resident Nikolina Mabic is the city’s Young Citizen of the Year, declared as part of Australia Day celebrations last week. Mr Humphries, a retired teacher, has been secretary of Hobsons Bay U3A for 20 years, volunteered with the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre for more than a decade, and is a founding member of the Friends of the Williamstown Wetlands. He is also a life member of the Williamstown Sailing Club and member of Newport Community Choir. “I’m not a leader of a vanguard waving the flag and running over the top of the trenches – I like to do things that facilitate that happening to other people,” Mr Humphries said. He said receiving Hobsons Bay’s top civic honour was the last thing he’d expected. “It’s great, but it’s also a bit frightening – I’m not my usual little quiet self. “Hobsons Bay is my home and one likes to keep the home infrastructure ticking over.” Ms Mabic, a 22-year-old graduate of Footscray City Films, was recognised as a champion of mental health issues. She said her own journey and frustration with treatment methods had inspired her to produce an upcoming documentary The First Giant Hurdle, which looks at anxiety and depression. “At the age of seven, I was already taken to see a psychologist from suffering with anxiety, and then around 14, I was diagnosed with panic disorder,” she said. Ms Mabic hopes to launch her film on Stan or Netflix and to show it in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong.
Selfless volunteers and creative businesses were been recognised as part of Maribyrnong council’s Australia Day civic awards ceremony. The Citizen of the Year honour was shared by Braybrook community leader Maureen Marshall and former mayor Gerard White. Ms Marshall, a longstanding volunteer with a strong connection to Braybrook, was recognised for more than 20 years spent assisting the disadvantaged in the community. She said she loved the sense of community and potential of the Braybrook area and the fact it now had “a wonderful public library”. “While I consider it important to focus on the positive aspects of Braybrook and its residents, I’d like to see the disparity of services between Braybrook and other parts of Melbourne acknowledged and addressed, particularly with regard to education, stable employment, affordable housing and appropriate support services,” she said. Mr White is a foster parent, district Scout leader and a former president of Yarraville Rotary who served as a Maribyrnong councillor for nine years. He said he was surprised by the honour as his community work was not aimed at garnering personal recognition. “We were always involved in something as kids – my parents were very involved with the community,” he said. Mr White paid tribute to the community spirit in the inner west, but warned of the need to ensure people who were part of the “old inner west” aren’t left behind or forced out by the area’s rapid change. Other award recipients included Crystal Harris (Community Strengthening), Robert Sneddon (Sporting), Littlefoot Bar
The award also recognised her work in creating the Spare Capacity project, which includes a website and app to help combat mental illness. Workshops will be held locally for 30 young women during National Youth Week. Ms Mabic said she was almost speechless when told of her award. “I’m still a bit on a high … I’m excited to get out there and keep affecting other young people’s lives.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Truck comeback to Link toll rise By Adam Carey/The Age
The toll hike will help pay for the $1.28 billion CityLink/Tulla widening project, which is due for completion early next year, a joint venture between Transurban and the state and federal governments. But the increase will add hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to the cost of driving on CityLink for larger freight operators, the Victorian Transport Association said. Chief executive Peter Anderson said some freight companies would seek to pass costs on to their customers, while other operators, particularly smaller ones, would simply avoid the toll road.
Trucks will come back onto inner-west roads with a vengeance as drivers bypass CityLink when tolls triple on April 1, the Victorian Transport Association has warned. The industry has spoken out against the looming rise in CityLink tolls for heavy vehicles, which will triple the daytime cost of using the road for trucks compared to cars. On April 1, the cost of a CityLink day pass will rise from $11.85 to $26.70 – 125 per cent – while night-time truck tolls will double from $8.90 to $17.80.
“Trucks will move away from CityLink and onto suburban roads, and there will be more congestion,” Mr Anderson said. “And it will be directly related to the fact that Transurban’s tolls are discriminatory.” Transurban and the Andrews government claim freight operators will benefit from the widened tollway because it will provide quicker and more reliable travel times. They also foreshadowed a reduction in truck traffic on suburban streets due to a 30 per cent increase in capacity on CityLink. About 26,000 commercial vehicles use CityLink each day.
Maribyrnong Truck Action Group spokesman Martin Wurt said higher tolls would inevitably increase truck traffic on suburban streets. “Without truck bans, operators are going to avoid tolls where they can, particularly the smaller owner-operators, who don’t receive a lot of money for doing the empty container runs,” Mr Wurt said. A spokesman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the industry had been given two years’ warning about the toll increases. “Trucking rates are being brought into line with other states and territories,” he said.

Highpoint rob suspects sought By Benjamin Millar Police are searching for two groups of young offenders over recent robberies at Highpoint shopping centre in Maribyrnong. In the first incident, two boys approached two other boys at a burger shop about 1.15pm on January 13, demanding a mobile phone from the victims, aged 12 and 13. The offenders, believed to be in their early teens, punched one of the victims and stole one of their hats before fleeing the scene with another boy. In a later incident, about 7.15pm on January
20, a group of seven youths approached two 14-year-old boys in restrooms, demanding their mobile phones. One of the offenders punched one of the victims, causing minor injuries, before the group fled via Aquatic Drive. A spokeswoman for Highpoint’s managers, GPT, said the safety and security of visitors to Highpoint was always a priority. “We can’t discuss our security measures in detail, but we invest to ensure the safety and security of all visitors, through security staffing and CCTV, she said. “Such incidents are unacceptable in the centre.

Island tale’s Oscar hope A film co-created by West Footscray director Bentley Dean is on the verge of making Oscars history after being shortlisted for the 2017 Academy Awards. Tanna, starring people of the Yakel tribe and the first ever feature film made in Vanuatu, is one of five films shortlisted for the best foreign language film award. The multi-award-winning love story is based on a traditional song from the island of Tanna about two lovers from warring tribes who dare to defy ancient laws of arranged marriage. Tanna has collected a swag of international awards, including best film (audience award) and cinematographer at the Venice International Film Festival and a jury commendation at the London Film Festival. It is the first time an Australian film has received a nomination in the Oscars best foreign language film category.
Screen Australia chief executive Graeme Mason said it was extraordinary for an English-speaking country to make a film worthy of a foreign language film nomination. “We could not be more proud of Tanna’s Australian creative team, and of course the people of Tanna, Vanuatu, who shared this Oscar-worthy tale, he said Australian films have been nominated for a record-breaking 13 Academy Awards this year, including best motion picture nominations for both Lion and Hacksaw Ridge. Both films have swept the awards categories with six nominations each. Tanna is screening at ACMI in Federation Square until February 11. The 89th Academy Awards ceremony will be held in Hollywood on Sunday, February 26. Benjamin Millar

Agents front their faults By Kirsten Robb/Domain Agents knew the owners of a period home at Seddon would not consider anything less than $950,000 for their renovated property – they’d already rejected an earlier offer of $900,000. But when it came to be advertised for auction, hopeful buyers were led to believe offers above $770,000 would be viable. In the latest legal action against underquoting in Melbourne, Village Real Estate’s Newport directors admitted advertising a property last year at, essentially, $180,000 below the price they knew the owners would accept. The admission follows a state government crackdown on one of Melbourne real estate’s most frustrating practices, ahead of a shake-up of the 36-year-old legislation that governs the way property prices are quoted in Victoria. Village Real Estate directors Marty Rankin and Huss Saad accepted a $15,000 fine as part of an enforceable undertaking regarding the Pilgrim Street property at Seddon. The three-bedroom house had been advertised for as low as “$770,000 plus” in January last year, despite agents having already rejected a private offer of $900,000 the previous month, and despite the vendors advice they would not consider anything below $950,000. A crowd of about 60 people watched three young couples fight for the keys at the subsequent February auction, after the advertised price was revised to “$800,000 plus”. Auctioneer Mr Saad announced to bidders they were “playing for keeps” — suggesting it had reached its reserve price — at $950,000. It sold under the hammer for $995,000. “Our guys mucked up,” Mr Rankin said. “As soon as they knew where the vendor’s expectations were, they should have raised the price … we’ve taken this very seriously,”
Village Real Estate Seddon director Marty Rankin said the team has “mucked up”. (Dennis Manktelow) Inset: The Pilgrim Street property in Seddon. (Supplied)
Mr Saad said. He said underquoting was an unfortunate byproduct of “overquoting” – when agents initially overestimate the sale price to vendors in order to stay competitive and secure a listing. The office has since implemented a comprehensive quoting system that goes “above and beyond” the state government’s
new legislation, set to come into effect on July 1. The Andrews government’s drastic overhaul of real estate advertising will ban common words and symbols “$800,000+” and “offers above $800,000”. Consumer affairs minister Marlene Kairouz said underquoting was not a smart sales tactic and new laws would help protect house hunters.

Call out about wrong way driver Police are appealing for witnesses to an incident on the Princes Freeway in Melbourne’s west on Friday night. A 53-year-old Altona woman has been charged with conduct endangering life, driving in a dangerous manner and unauthorised use of a freeway. Westgate Highway Patrol officers allege the woman was driving a red Mitsubishi Lancer in the wrong direction in the Geelong-bound lane at Laverton about 10.40pm. Police allege the woman was seen stopping her car to get out and walk along the freeway. Acting Senior Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans said the woman appeared to be looking for something on the ground. He said members of the public reported the vehicle to police after several near misses. “It was found by the air wing, who were overhead at the time, and then intercepted shortly thereafter by a number of ground units,” Acting Senior Sergeant Prentice-Evans said. “They found the vehicle stationary at Leakes and Old Geelong Road … just about to turn back onto the freeway.” The woman has been bailed to front Werribee Magistrates’ Court in April. Anyone who witnessed Friday night’s incidents is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au. Goya Dmytryshchak

A Footscray film-maker is on the path to producing her first feature-length film after being awarded a prestigious fellowship. Amie Batalibasi is the 2017 recipient of the Sundance Institute Merata Mita Fellowship, named in honour of the trailblazing late Māori filmmaker. The Australian Solomon Islander, selected from a global pool of nominees, will receive a cash grant and year-long support, including mentorship opportunities and a trip to the Sundance Film Festival. Bird Runningwater, director of the Sundance Institute Native American and Indigenous Film Program, said Batalibasi’s passion to collaborate with diverse communities at a grassroots level was carrying on the mission of Merata Mita. “We are extremely proud to continue Merata’s efforts with this fellowship, which pays tribute to her immense contributions and passes along her spirit to a new generation of indigenous artists such as Amie,” he said. Speaking from the festival in Utah, Batalibasi said the fellowship would kickstart the journey to making her first feature film. “Being here at the Sundance Film Festival is fantastic,” she said. “ I’ve been able to meet many other indigenous filmmakers, see some inspirational films and make important industry contacts,” she said. “This is monumental because it can be a really tough road to be heard in this industry.” Batalibasi’s feature adaptation of her award-winning short film, Blackbird, will explore the little-known history of Australia’s sugar slaves. It will shine a light on the dark late-1800s history of “blackbirding”, in which about

60,000 Pacific Islanders were coerced or kidnapped to labour on Australia’s sugar cane and cotton farms. Batalibasi said the fellowship win acknowledged that the story of blackbirding needs to be told. “The history of Australia’s sugar slaves is little known and I’m hoping to change that.” Benjamin Millar

MY PLACE Seddon’s Claudia Funder may be best known for founding the Swing Patrol dance classes, yet she holds hidden talents inspired by even more ancient forms of music and dance. She speaks to Benjamin Millar. What’s the best thing about being part of the swing community?
What is your connection with Seddon? I bought a lovely cottage in Seddon in 1998. I called it my ‘Willy Wonky’ house because the foundations were gone, all the door frames were tilted, half the floor was rotten and it smelt mouldy. I’ve fixed it up over the years, and two years ago pulled down the lean-to and built a proper kitchen. I was attracted to the area as I had friends who’d bought here seven years before that, and I’d gotten to know it quite well.
That’s a hard question … the friendships you form and acceptance of everyone who comes along … being part of a group that has an international dance context. The Melbourne swing dance scene has become famous world-over for the community we have and the events we run. So I like the micro context of local community and my close friends, and the macro context, where I can travel the world and find new people who love what I love. Swing dancing under the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was a highlight, for instance.
What do you love most about the area? Is there anything you would change? I love the area. The mix of people, ages, nationalities and heritage is wonderful. I like that people talk to each other in the street. I love the Yarraville village, the people’s park, Seddon village – and I do all my shopping locally. The community is passionate and vibrant, and I like that too. What would I change? The “beautification” of the Charles/Gamon/Victoria streets intersections just causes traffic jams and makes it nigh on impossible for the buses. I’d remove that. Do you have a favourite local place or places? I work from home, but have to get out for a coffee each day so I’m a familiar face at most of the cafes … Advieh, Luxsmith, 1906, Lola, Alfa, Seddon Deadly Sins or Cornershop, or Vault in Yarraville. If I’m not checking emails in a cafe, I’ll be at the Sun Bookshop raiding their history section.
(Damjan Janevski)
What makes it such a matchmaking pursuit?
How did you first become involved in swing, and how did Swing Patrol come about? I learnt ballroom and street Latin dance at uni whilst studying music and art history, then became more involved teaching those styles. The next craze in the ‘90s was swing, and I loved it.
I branched out in 1998 to run some dance classes independently, and the hobby and passion grew into a full time business! Swing Patrol now has classes in Melbourne, Sydney and London, but the beating heart of it is local dance communities, centred around people coming together for weekly classes, such as the Swing Patrol Seddon class on Thursday nights.
I think if people set out to find a partner and have set expectations about that, rather than just wanting to dance, they can be disappointed. But when like minds come together in a fun hobby, then yes, wedding bells ring. I have a Swing Patrol wedding list I’ve put together over the years, which is up to about 40 or so. And I know I haven’t got all of them on the list. What’s something people would be surprised to learn about you? I play renaissance lute, studied mediaeval manuscript illumination, and I hate pork. Swing Patrol dancers perform at Yarraville Festival on February 12, in a 12-hour dance marathon for White Night on February 18 and in June’s Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Ruth Murray and Nutan Gallina enjoy some high tea. (Damjan Janevski)
A tea time crusade Fresh baking, a lovely cup of tea and fine company are the enjoyable prospects that will be on offer at a Wyndham fundraiser. The Cancer Crusaders’ annual high tea will return next month to help raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital. Crusaders secretary Ruth Murray said the group, comprising 12 Wyndham women, had a goal of raising $90,000 a year. The funds raised will help pay for a brain tumor clinical trial program at the hospital. “Since we formed in 2013, we’ve hosted two high teas a year,” Ms Murray said.
“This will be our seventh. “Everything is homemade. We’ll have cucumber sandwiches, chicken royale sandwiches, chocolate mousse cake and more on offer, along with a selection of teas and coffee.” In the nine months to Christmas last year, the Crusaders raised a whopping $79,000 for the hospital and they hope to keep adding to that tally. FOOD NEWS REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a tasty lesson in south Indian cuisine Sankranti has been open a few weeks, and in that time I’ve enjoyed some nice south Indian food – pooris, a biryani. But I’ve left it to do a story for the weekend when the restaurant is serving up three days of special menus to celebrate the festival after which it’s named. On the plus side, for me that means a beaut and very photogenic feed. On the down side, a one-off vegetarian feast cannot be taken as representative of the regular menu. So let’s look at it this way – my Saturday lunch meal may not be what you’ll get on a regular visit here, but it does represent the care and love that goes into the Sankranti food. The Saturday Sankranti deal costs me $29 (see details below). Quite a bit for a vegetarian thali, eh? Well, no. I’m happy to pay up, such is the diversity of tastes and textures, some of them familiar, many of them new to me, and some even challenging. Latha talks me through some of the particulars and rituals normally involved with eating this sort of festive food. I even give the traditional eating order a go: sweets first, soup, and yogurt last. The sweets don’t look very appetising, do they? Not so – they make lovely eating, though in quite a different way from the more familiar Indian sweets such as kulfi.
SANKRANTI AUSTRALIA Address: 250 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 9041 9899 But a lifetime of culinary indoctrination of the soup/mains/sweets school is hard to kick. And the effort of mentally trying to match new and interesting names with specific dishes tumbles into the realm of information overload. So in the end, I just go with my own flow and enjoy the dazzling array before me. I especially like the rasam, the deep-fried and battered okra, the spicy coriander rice, and the rice and vermicelli pudding that is payasam. This has been a humbling reminder that for all the Indian food I eat, in terms of regional diversity and a fabulously rich food culture, I am a mere beginner.

VEGE OUT School’s back for 2017, and while many parents have got the books and uniform side of things sorted, school lunch boxes can pose more of a challenge. I know I’m guilty of falling into a rut at times when it comes to figuring out what to feed my fast-growing, soccer-loving son. If you’re after a simple, healthy alternative to those ham rolls and Vegemite sangers, this slice ticks all the boxes – it’s packed with vegies, it’s very portable, it cuts well and it’s great hot or cold. Best of all, it’s quick and easy to make. Thanks to Best Recipes for this little lunchbox lifesaver.

As bright, spacious and contemporary as can be, this unit will have young couples and downsizers showing lots of interest. The decor of white walls, soft-grey carpet and floor tiles, and lovely solid floorboards have broad appeal, and all is beautifully presented. Entry is to a large sitting and dining area (with those floorboards) which adjoins a great kitchen. Caesarstone benches, grey glass splashback, white cabinetry with lots of drawers, a wall oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher characterise the cooks’ domain. Two good-sized bedrooms share a sleekly tiled bathroom with a large shower, and there’s a powder room (or second toilet). The laundry is separate. Ducted heating and a split-system ensure climate control. A timber deck surrounded by paving creates a courtyard entertaining space, and the garage has internal access.
Ideal as a first home or shrewd investment, this light-filled residence is in a great spot – 100 metres from the Edwards Reserve frog park (barbecue, refurbished playground), and 20 minutes from the Melbourne CBD. Entry is via a large living hub, with polished floorboards and white-on-white colour palette. This opens via a glass sliding door onto a north-facing private courtyard with grey paving. The all-white kitchen has a corner pantry, dishwasher and European 900mm cooker. A carpeted staircase leads to large, grey-carpeted bedrooms; one has a walk-in robe and en suite, the other with built-in robe and a bathroom next door. A separate laundry and powder room are downstairs. A split-system and remote-controlled garage with internal access are other inclusions.

A five-minute stroll will have you at The Strand, the foreshore and shops, putting this appealing property in a wonderful location – and two primary schools and one secondary are within a kilometre or less. The block of about 500 square metres suggests a chance to build a dream home, but the existing one has a lot going for it. Three large, grey-carpeted bedrooms are at the back; the main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, and the main bathroom is family-sized. A spacious lounge-dining room has a gas heater under a period-style surround, and the kitchen (all mod-cons) is strikingly decked out in black and white. Just as the front yard and covered porch entry suggests, the gardens out back are a leafy treat rimming a concrete sitting area. A carport and driveway space are welcome inclusions.
Designed as combined residence and shopfront with main road exposure, this beautifully presented townhouse – within two-minutes of Highpoint – makes a fine family home, with the shop space easily serving as another living zone, if that’s your direction. Entry is to a carpeted lounge room with a powder room to the side. This opens to a tiled family-meals area and kitchen, the latter with walk-in pantry, two-toned cabinetry, open shelves and all mod-cons. Three bedrooms share upstairs space with a retreat/study nook; each has balcony access, while the main has a walk-in robe and en suite. The fully tiled main bathroom here is all contemporary style. A stunning deck and paving under a curved, opaque roof features privacy screens, heating and fan cooling. Split-systems, a 6.5kW solar system and a double garage from rear right-of-way are noteworthy inclusions.

The most striking thing about this large house is the sense of elegant comfort found inside. Combine this with a locale that has Gloucester Reserve and Esplanade foreshore a two-minute amble away, and the property belongs on the ‘coveted’ list. The block of about 650 square metres suggests a dual development or building a dream home, STCA, but the house, as is, will have many fans. Spacious rooms have lots of windows to

Auction: March 4 at 1.30pm maximise views of the bay, whether under a summer sun or in winter moodiness. The colour palette is a relaxed pearl-grey, white and sandstone; and everything has a fresh sparkle. Starting up top, there’s an expansive, carpeted living room, and the main bedroom with walk-in wardrobe and a next-door bathroom with good storage, decked out in grey and white. Three big downstairs bedrooms, each
with a robe, catch the morning sun and share a bathroom – all original with pink pedestal basin and tub and a mix of pink and glossy-black wall tiles. Living areas include a large lounge room with a mantel-framed gas heater flanked by shelves. White timber bifolds open from here to a carpeted sitting area, which flows into the grey-tiled kitchen-meals zone. An appealing cooks’ domain, the sleek, all-white kitchen has a stack of storage,

51 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 1, 2017
SPORT Williamstown star’s Open signs all good Andrew Whittington’s incredible run at the 2017 Australian Open ended one step short of a final appearance. But Whittington has raised the bar in terms of what he can strive for at grand slams in both singles and doubles. The 23-year-old from Williamstown put his name on the map in his own right with a breakthrough win in the men’s singles over top 100 Czech player Adam Pavlasek. A loss to top 20 Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the second round should prove a great learning curve for the Liston Tennis Club product. Prior to this tournament, it was in doubles that Whittington had made his name at his home grand slam. Whittington and Alex Bolt reached the third round of the men’s doubles in 2015 and
went as far as the quarter-finals in 2014. But Whittington and Bolt went their separate ways this year, with Whittington teaming up with compatriot Marc Polmans and Bolt joining Bradley Mousley. The Bolt-Mousley pairing survived until the quarter-finals, in which they were eliminated in three sets by Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Whittington-Polmans made it through to the semi-finals, in which they went down to Finland’s Henri Kontinen and Australia’s John Peers in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. While the final eluded WhittingtonPolmans, it proved to be a partnership worth persisting with. The pair had four big wins en route to the penultimate stage of the tournament – all in a very different fashions.
They got the ball rolling with a comfortable first-round 6-3, 6-2 win over Yen-Hsun Lu and Jiri Vesely. In the second round, Whittington-Polmans had to come back from the dead after losing the first set to love, beating Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 0-6, 6-3, 6-4. Whittington-Polmans enjoyed a tough straight-sets 7-6, 7-6 win over Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau in the third round, before downing Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 in a back-and-forth tussle. After his success at the Open, Whittington – ranked 194 in singles and 311 in doubles before the Open – is going to be a player to keep an eye on in 2017. Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ I have always believed that life membership of a sports club is the ultimate accolade. You have made a lasting impression and, in return, the club gives you a lasting testament to your time and devotion – the classic win-win. Western Bulldogs awarded four new life members at the AGM last week – Ray Baxter, Jose Romero, Scott Gilham and Gary McGorlick, all very worthy recipients. Ray and Jose are former players and served for a number of years as board members as well. Scott volunteered at the club for more than 20 years, and Gary served in a number of off field roles. Gary, or ‘Brutus’ as he is affectionately known, worked in team management and player welfare and is very well known in footy circles through his association at VFL and suburban levels. ■ Susan Alberti stood down from her board role at the AGM, and the legacy she leaves is enormous. A generous and willing benefactor to the club, Alberti will be remembered as a pioneer for women in football – and not just the Women’s Football League. She blazed a trail through the Bulldogs boardroom and put women in the top echelon of the game. Her passion for the Bulldogs can never be questioned, nor can her passion for the game and the people involved. That combination will be hard for the Bulldogs to replace. Fortunately Alberti has left a very clear blueprint – or in her case red, white and blue print – of what is expected. ■ Yarraville Cricket Club’s first President’s Lunch later this month boasts a star-studded line-up. Former Victorian cricket captain Darren Berry will speak, along with Bulldog premiership players Jake Stringer and Liam Picken. It’s on Friday, February 24, at Peckish @ the Yarraville Club. The cost of $120 includes a two-course meal with drinks. Bookings through Rod Wood 0407 357 121 or rod.wood@toyota.com.au.
Second day tests plans By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville’s bid for a desperately needed outright result met stubborn resistance from Hoppers Crossing in sub-district cricket at Yarraville Oval on Saturday. Eagles’ captain Nathan Allen could not have devised a better plan, and his players could not have executed the plan any better, but they could only tip their hat to the Hoppers Crossing batsmen after the visitors shafted their plan and forced them to settle on the six points reaped from the first day. “Especially after we set up on day one, we thought we could have a red-hot crack at winning outright, but they’re not very easy to come by,” Eagles’ top order batsman Matthew Love said. “They dug in and made it hard for our bowlers to take consecutive wickets.” Yarraville is a long way back from the top six
and needs an outright result to get back into the mix. After totally dominating the opening day, this was a golden opportunity for the Eagles to take maximum points. Yarraville batted the first 10 overs on day two to build a 113-run lead before the declaration. Love was sensational with 129, including 14 fours and five sixes, while Josh Hahnel (57) making his second half century of the summer. With 70 overs left on day two, the Eagles felt they had a huge chance of getting the 10 wickets needed to snare the outright win. But Hoppers Crossing’s batsmen did what they failed to do on day one, and dug in to make 6-173, surviving until the close of play. “He [Allen] tried everything, threw the ball around, but they were just pretty stubborn,” Love said. Yarraville is 15 points out of the top six and face seventh-placed Melton in a do-or-die two-day game on the road starting on Saturday.
52 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 1, 2017
Meanwhile, Williamstown will spend another week at the top of the ladder after a five-wicket win over Noble Park. After a slow start in their search for the 192 target, Brent McMinn (82) and Mitchell Streiff (75no) carried the Seagulls to victory with entertaining knocks – McMinn hit eight fours and two sixes while Streiff blasted three fours and five sixes. Altona moved up to third after thrashing Endeavour Hills in a first innings that included a seven-wicket haul by opening bowler Shannon Clarke. In the Premier Cricket, Footscray Edgewater has the upper hand against Carlton heading into the second day’s play at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs sit at 1-31 in reply to the Blues’ 216. The Blues were stymied early in the day by the five-wicket haul of Dogs’ spinner Jeremy Hart (5-89).

Darren is someone who has never been frightened to get his hands dirty and put in for his local sporting and service clubs. Good to see his years of dedication and time rewarded. Deeble award dynamo jets off to fly with the Eagles
Despite setbacks due to injury, Daniel Venables had a year to remember on the football field in 2016. (Damian Visentini)
There was a good reason Don Deeble Sports Star runner-up Daniel Venables could not pick up his award on Wednesday night – he was hard at work in preseason training in Perth with AFL powerhouse West Coast Eagles. When he was nominated, Venables was touted as a potential first round draft pick, such was his impact for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup and for Vic Metro at the under-18 national football championships. It was Venables’ dream to become an AFL footballer and that came true in November when the Eagles selected the immensely talented forward as pick 13 in the AFL national draft. Venables’ proud dad Peter was on hand to accept the award on his behalf in front of a big Deeble awards night crowd. “It’s terrific – he’ll be rapt,” Peter said. “It’s a great award, well done mate, great job.” Venables’ player bio on the Eagles’ website is glowing in its praise. It describes him as “a dynamic play-maker capable of turning a game
in an instant”, who boasts “searing speed” aligned with “size and power”. To Peter, those words mean nothing unless Daniel can back it up on the field. “I’d just describe him as my son,” Peter said. “We have four in our family and Daniel’s our youngest. “When you hear something like that (praise), you just take it on board, and then we go back and say you’re only as good as your next game. “I know it sounds pretty boring, but that’s the case.” Venables’ next game is likely to be in the AFL, making him one of the stand-out nominees for the 2016 edition of the Don Deeble award, and a deserving runner-up. But football has not been his only sporting pursuit in the past. Whatever sport he has played, Venables’s gone at it full steam. “He’s just ultra competitive,” Peter said. “He did Little Athletics and won the Victorian hurdles in the under 10s, and he went on to play cricket and made the state for under 15s.
“He had to make a decision between cricket and football and, as much as I’d prefer he would’ve played cricket, he chose football, and that’s fine because he’s enjoying himself. “It’s taking him places he never thought he would go.” For now, Venables is still familiarising himself with West Coast and the Perth lifestyle. Within minutes of landing on the tarmac, Venables became instantly recognisable to Eagles’ fans as their top draft pick. And, with that comes a whole heap of pressure. “Over there, everyone knows you,” father Peter said. “It’s not easy – it’s pretty ruthless. “West Coast is a fantastic club, but it is a ruthless sport. “He’s in amongst the big boys now and that’s what he wanted, that’s what he’s after. “He’s going well, it’s hard work and he’s meeting lots of people.” Lance Jenkinson
Jamieson Battistella explains the hard work that goes into preparing for a heptathlon. (Lance Jenkinson)
All-in effort for Olympic dream
Maddison Rocci speaks after she was named the Don Deeble Sports Star award winner for 2016. (Lance Jenkinson)
Rocci claims the prize By Lance Jenkinson Young basketballer Maddison Rocci is the winner of the 2016 Don Deeble Sports Star award. Rocci beat a top-shelf group of 10 nominees to scoop the $5000 first prize at the awards night held at the Club Italia Sporting Club in St Albans last Wednesday night. The runners-up were footballer Daniel Venables and heptathlete Jamieson Battistella, who received $2500 each. But this was Rocci’s night. She is a most worthy recipient after a year in which she achieved sporting excellence. “It’s a great honour to have won this award,” Rocci said on stage after receiving the trophy from baseball super coach Jon Deeble. “I couldn’t thank the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club enough for everything and to all the other sponsors who are involved in
this. It’s such a privilege to have won this. To all the other athletes out here, I wish you all the best and good luck with everything.” Rocci is an up-and-coming point guard learning her craft at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. The tenacious teenager is part of a Basketball Australia national performance program and a member of the AIS women’s basketball team. Rocci, originally from the Werribee Devils, has done all she can in the under-age ranks, including Australian representation at junior level, to set up her future in the sport. The next six months will be an interesting transition period for Rocci. She revealed at the Deeble awards night that she signed a professional contract while at the AIS and is hoping it will lead to a spot on a WNBL roster next season. “Hopefully, I’ll get into a WNBL team at the end of September when it starts,” she said.
Rocci would not have made it this far without the support of her family. “To my mum and dad, they were always there for me and supporting me in everything that I’ve done,” she said. “Thank you to my other family members for all the support.” When interviewed for her nomination last year, Rocci credited her brothers, Kristian and Lucas, for giving her a competitive edge after years of basketball battles in the backyard. “Sometimes it used to end in tears,” she said. “We always used to go at it with each other.” Rocci’s ultimate dream is to make it to the Olympic Games. She admires and strives to be like the players on the Australian Opals team. Nominations are now being taken for the 2017 Don Deeble Sports Star awards. To nominate a sports star in the west, email ljenkinson@starweekly.com.au.
Heptathlete Jamieson Battistella was one of the most driven athletes entered in the 2016 Don Deeble Sports Star awards. One of two runners-up, Battistella vowed to leave no stone unturned in her quest to represent Australia at the Olympic Games – no matter how long it took. “The ultimate goal for me is definitely the Olympics,” Battistella told the audience. “Maybe 2020, but more likely 2024 or maybe even 2028, but I definitely want to get there – that’s my end game.” Battistella has to work harder than most because of the sheer volume of events she trains for. The heptathlon is a two-day athletics event that takes in seven different disciplines. “On the first day, we start with hurdles and do a high jump, shot put and a 200 metres,” Battistella said. “The second day, we do a long jump, a javelin and an 800 metres.” Battistella was talent identified by Maribyrnong Sports College. It was while in action for the college that Battistella tasted overseas competition – at the Simplot Games in the US. “It’s the biggest indoor track and field competition in America,” she said. “It’s basically a high school meet with kids from all over America [and] this year also New Zealand, Mexico, Canadian and Australian competitors.” Battistella came fifth at the under-17 Australian Heptathlon Championships, won gold at the Little Athletics Victoria state titles and came fifth in the Little Athletics Australia pentathlon. She was excited to be recognised for her efforts. “I’m so happy, so appreciative of everything,” she said. Lance Jenkinson
