By Goya Dmytryshchak The former Hobsons Bay Caravan Park at Williamstown North is set to become a new estate housing about 400 people over 2.175 hectares. Hobsons Bay council last week approved plans by Bayland Property Group for a $21.6 million, 108-townhouse development in a new residential subdivision at 222-238 Kororoit Creek Road. There will be 50 three-storey and 58 double-storey dwellings, and all except nine will have three bedrooms. The development was approved last Thursday by a special planning committee comprising councillors Colleen Gates, Sandra Wilson and Jonathon Marsden. The council has mandated that at least 10 per cent of the development will be earmarked for affordable housing. It will also have a private waste collection, and its construction will result in the loss of 191 existing trees. Urbis director Lloyd Elliott, representing the developer, said the townhouses would “create a positive new residential community”. Cr Marsden described the planned
housing estate as “an experiment”. “It’s a very new experience for the council and the developer to put so many townhouses so close together in such a small space, and it’s something of an experiment,” he said. Impassioned residents from an abutting cul-de-sac spoke passionately at the meeting against plans to create pedestrian access to the development from their quiet street. All but two of the 21 households in Anile Place objected to plans to open up the western end of their cul-de-sac. One resident brought an hourglass and placed it in front of the councillors to show what it would look like with potentially 400 new residents pouring through their street. Another resident, Kenneth Sidebottom, said removing the fence at the end of Anile Place would destroy residents’ peace of mind. “If removed, it places my home, family and my neighbours at increased risk of burglary, home invasion, attack, property damage, and negatively impacts all of our health, security and mental wellbeing,” he said. The council agreed to keep the street as it is.

Lots of doggone fun The annual showcase of the west’s renowned community spirit is almost at hand, with the Yarraville Festival to take over the streets early next month. Festival committee vice-president Carla Smith says the action-packed day will have music and other entertainment performed on six stages as well as a petting zoo, craft stalls and a whole lot more, capped by the perennially popular dog parade. The festival unfolds from 10am to 7pm on Sunday, February 12, in the heart of Yarraville Village. For more details, visit: yarravillefestival.com.au Benjamin Millar

Saigon market pong a lot of rot By Benjamin Millar The clean-up of fire-ravaged Little Saigon market in Footscray is expected to begin in coming days amid growing concerns about health risks posed by decaying food and vermin at the site. Residents and neighbouring businesses have complained about the growing odour caused by rotting meat and seafood as it festers in the summer heat, five weeks after fire tore through the popular market on December 13. A fault in an electrical switchboard triggered the blaze,
estimated to have caused more than $12 million damage. Maribyrnong council has issued the owners with a clean-up notice for the site, but the area remains too hazardous to access safely. Co-owner Loc Lam said a demolition permit was required before a clean-up of the most heavily damaged part of the markets could safely take place. “Along Ryan Street there has been heavy damage, the roof has collapsed,” he said. “There are complaints about the odour; there is a lot of food involved.”
Mr Lam said a company was on standby to carry out the clean-up as soon as permission was gained. He remains hopeful redevelopment of the site, including a new market topped by apartments, may be underway before a planning permit expires in April, but the insurance company is yet to deliver its assessment on a claim over the fire. Footscray Asian Business Association president Wing La said the closure of the markets had hit traders and their employees hard.
“The traders have suffered from a loss, some of them have been trying to recover what they can of their stock,” he said. A number of traders are seeking to relocate to the neighbouring Westville Central shopping complex, Footscray Market and the former Forges site. Mr La said the closure of the market had a flow-on effect to other Footscray businesses as shoppers turned to other suburbs. “The public are disappointed they could not go to Little Saigon so they are going out to other markets or St Albans,” he said.
First sight offers a second chance
Injury charges for Merc driver
After 17 years of marriage to his childhood sweetheart, John Robertson from Altona Meadows never thought he’d be single at his age. The 53-year-old has embarked on the radical social experiment of appearing on Channel 9’s Married at First Sight, premiering on January 30. Mr Robertson, a retail business owner with two adult daughters, was born and bred in Altona, and played football with local club The Vikings for about 20 years.
‘‘
A man is behind bars after an argument over a 15-minute wait at a Maribyrnong carwash escalated into a brawl that allegedly led to a rented Mercedes-Benz being reversed into the carwash’s manager. The driver is at risk of surrendering a $150,000 surety for allegedly breaching bail while awaiting trial on a charge of culpable driving causing death in a fatal 2015 crash. His bail was revoked last Thursday. He was arrested by police last Thursday following the melee at a Maribyrnong carwash last Sunday in which more than a dozen carwash workers armed themselves with bats, poles, sticks or chairs, Melbourne Magistrate Court heard. The court was told the man and a friend began arguing with the manager because they had to wait an extra 15 minutes for the rental car to be cleaned. Detective Senior Constable Owen Matthews said the melee broke out when the man’s friend threw his drink over the manager. The man is accused of reversing his Mercedes-Benz rental car into the manager after the brawl and then clipping another man as he drove off. The man was charged with two counts of recklessly causing injury. The court heard he was suspended from driving at the time of the incident. Magistrate Suzanne Cameron said CCTV footage made it clear the man reversed at a “fast rate” and that the alleged offending was anti-social and violent.
It is pretty radical isn’t it … I like the idea they can - John Robertson match you
’’
“I was about 36 when I broke up, and you just think, especially when you meet somebody so young in life, you think that’s it. “Sadly, I tried online dating – I wasn’t a big fan of it. I went to speed dating. It was just a fun night out. “I’ve had girlfriends, but I’ve never moved in with anybody since I broke up.” So Mr Robertson opted to get married to someone he would meet for the first time at the altar after being matched by professionals. “It is pretty radical isn’t it – it is crazy,” he said. “I do like the idea that they can match you; it’s a good idea because I’ve gone out with people and I’ve worked out 12 months, 18 months down the track, we’re actually not right for each other.” While Mr Robertson knows whether his onscreen marriage works out, he is sworn to secrecy until the end of the TV series. But he can say what he told the producers he was looking for at the start of filming. “I like somebody who gets my sense of humour, which is a bit quirky or dry. “I would like to share my life completely with somebody and that takes time.” Mr Robertson’s wedding airs on February 5. One down … eight lives left A cat dumped in a backpack and left for dead on a sweltering day is slowly returning to health, according to its rescuers. The cat, dubbed Devante, was found by chance behind the West Footscray Vet Clinic last Tuesday as temperatures soared to 38 degrees. After emergency treatment for heat stroke, Devante was delivered to Cheltenham Cat Rescue and is now recovering with the help of an animal foster carer. Cheltenham Cat Rescue director Natasha Reus said the plucky cat had defied the odds and begun making a remarkable recovery. “He’s surprised us with how well he has responded and reacted to pats and cuddles.” Ms Reus said the circumstances of the cat’s dumping in a closed backpack were unclear, but she urged people to reach out to a rescue service rather than abandon animals. “It was a very strange thing to do on one of Melbourne’s hottest days.” Ms Reus also wants people to realise a companion animal is a commitment for life. She urged people to adopt rather than use a pet store and ensure the animals were desexed and microchipped. A crowdfunding campaign has the goal of raising $2000 to cover Devante’s medical bills. A Seddon family has recovered their beloved hand-built caravan after it was stolen on Boxing Day. As reported by Star Weekly earlier this month, it was towed from outside their Bilston Street home on the day they were set to go on a family holiday. Father Andrew Steward said it had taken about 200 hours to build the distinctive “teardrop” caravan, which is modelled on a 1940s design. He said someone had anonymously put a clipping of the Star Weekly article in his letterbox, with a note written on it saying they had seen the caravan outside an Altona North address. Mr Steward said he also received a message on his phone informing him of the tip-off in the letter box. “As far as I know, he saw it in the paper, recognised it and then he pretty much got in contact with me straight away,” Mr Steward said. “Then I contacted the police … they picked it up a few days later.” Mr Steward retrieved the caravan from police on Monday. “I thought it was gone, so I’m just obviously happy,” he said. “It’s good that it’s finally made its way back home, and it seems it’s undamaged. “It’s unusual that it was just left in somebody’s front yard adjacent to the road in clear view of everybody. It wasn’t hidden at all. “It’s a bit of a strange one.”

Plastic problem? Bag it! Hobsons Bay Boomerang Bags will feature at a stall at Altona’s Logan Reserve on Australia Day to raise awareness about how people can reduce their reliance on plastic bags. Marilyn Olliff started the reusable cloth bag initiative in Hobsons Bay. They are known as ‘Boomerang Bags’ because you borrow and bring back a bag from a box at Coles supermarket or Altona library – with four more boxes waiting to go into other locations. Ms Olliff said single-use plastic was one of the biggest contributors to pollution in the earth’s waterways and oceans. “Part of our project is to raise awareness amongst the community to reduce their use of single-use plastic,” she said. “There’s about 50 Boomerang Bag communities around
Australia, so we’re only one of those. We’ve made several hundred bags to date. “We’ve had requests from other places to put a Boomerang Bag box outside, but we’re having to make a lot more bags before we can put them into circulation.” Bags are made by locals from upcycled donated fabric. “This is an activity that builds community through the making of the bags,” Ms Olliff said. “It reduces waste to landfill and it generally raises awareness about how important it is not to let plastic escape into our oceans and damage our wildlife.” Details: facebook.com/groups/ HobsonsBayBoomerangBags Goya Dmytryshchak

Police hunt airport, home thief By Goya Dmytryshchak A woman has stolen four bags from a Melbourne Airport carousel and later burgled the home of one of the victims, a widowed grandmother from Altona Meadows. Investigators from the Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit have released a CCTV image of a woman they want to speak to about the burglary and theft. Detective Senior Constable Megan Walters said the woman stole the baggage from the terminal 4 carousel about 3pm last November 20.
“[She] selected four bags from the carousel and placed them onto a trolley and then has just wheeled the trolley to a small white car. A short time later she has committed the residential burglary in Altona Meadows,” Detective Senior Constable Walters said. She said there was no forced entry to the Alma Avenue home, which was burgled within an hour of the luggage theft. It is believed the thief used information from the luggage tag to find the grandmother’s address while she was still at the airport trying to track down her luggage. ‘Sentimental’ jewellery, including her late
husband’s wedding ring was stolen, as was cash and electrical goods. Police are appealing for public assistance to identify the thief, who had long blonde hair and was wearing sunglasses and a DC T-shirt. Police said the four stolen bags belong to four separate owners. Anyone with information is being urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Police want to speak to this woman after four bags were stolen from Melbourne Airport. (Supplied)

The festival will also include performances by The Yarraville All Stars with Rebecca Barnard, The Mud Cakes, the Pearly Shells Big Band, Bouba and Kids WB magician Magic Tony.
Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming says the Stony Creek Music Festival is fast becoming one of the most popular fixtures on the Festival City program. “This community festival really does have something for everyone and we encourage the community to come down throughout the afternoon and soak up the Australia Day atmosphere.” Further details are at www.festivalcity.com. au Benjamin Millar

Celebrating 100 years
Closure call explained
By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona North’s Caterina Bartone celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday. Born in Soriano Calabro in the Italian region of Calabria, Ms Bartone was the eldest of nine children. Her niece, Gina Bartone, said her aunty acted as a mother to her siblings as she was the eldest, and a girl. Ms Barton excelled at school and reached grade 5, which in her region at the time was considered quite an accomplishment. Showing an aptitude for maths, she was later put in charge of the family’s general store. Ms Barton migrated to Australia with her mother in the 1960s. A long-term resident of Altona, she lived at home before moving to Marina nursing home in Altona North last year. She didn’t marry but has 13 nieces and nephews, 23 great nieces and nephews, and eight great great nieces and nephews, all of whom she pampers and adores. Ms Barton credits her longevity to a traditional Mediterranean diet, including lots of legumes and green leafy vegetables. She also had access to homegrown fruits and vegetables, which she credits for her long life.
A Footscray childcare centre was shut due to poor patronage and poor building quality, a confidential report released by Maribyrnong council reveals. Empire Street Early Learning Centre closed just before Christmas despite protests from families who used it. The confidential report that recommended its closure, given to Maribyrnong councillors last July and released late last month, condemned the “poorly performing asset’ as “at the end of its useful life, with little to no potential for redevelopment”. It cited low demand for the service and noted it was operating at 79 per cent capacity. The report stated the redeveloped Maribyrnong River Children’s Centre and Church Street Children’s Centre at West Footscray will provide 83 extra childcare places, replacing the 35 places lost at the Empire Early Learning Centre. “The only option … was to close the services based at Empire Early Learning Centre,” it stated. It recommended redeveloping Church Street Children’s Centre, Maribyrnong River Children’s Centre and the Yarraville Community Kindergarten/ Norfolk Children’s Centre to meet current and future demand. But the trouble-plagued Church Street redevelopment has since stalled, and there is no date set for its eventual completion.

Crime fighters tackle tough trek By Charlene Macaulay
Time is nigh to tackle croquet
(Dennis Manktelow)
When they’re not busy fighting crime, Wyndham police officers have been hard at work raising money – and their heart rates – to help out people living in poverty. Thirty-two police officers from the Werribee, Wyndham North and Laverton stations will be working in teams of four to conquer the Oxfam trailwalker event at Melbourne, during which they’ll have to walk 100 kilometres in less than 40 hours. The annual event is held in 11 countries around the world, with money raised going towards Oxfam’s efforts to fight poverty and injustice. First Constable Amanda Bennett said police had been taking part in weekly treks around the You Yangs and Werribee Open Range Zoo, as well as gym sessions, to get ready for the walk. Members will also take part in the Wyndham Relay for Life the week before the Oxfam trailwalker event to get in some last-minute training. First Constable Bennett said the trek challenge was a great way for police to hang out with fellow officers of different ranks and departments with whom they might otherwise not see much. “It creates a good team environment, some positive reasons to catch up outside of work, and makes for a happy team environment,” she said. Police have been out in force pursuing their fundraising efforts, manning many Bunnings sausage sizzles and planning a trivia night in a bid to reach their $15,000 fundraising goal. Williamstown Croquet Club will be one of the host venues when the Golf Croquet World Championships are held in Australia for the first time between February 25 and March 5. About 80 players from 14 countries will compete in the 12th world championships, held biennially in a different host country. President Andre Daniel-Dreyfus said Williamstown will host games daily until March 1, and spectators are welcome. “Croquet is a minor sport, and a lot of people don’t realise how it’s played at the highest levels, and how exciting and challenging a game it can be.” Golf croquet is a quicker version of the game and takes 50 minutes to play as opposed to three hours. Williamstown’s Lester Hughes will be among those competing in what will be his fourth world championships. “Hopefully, there’ll be lots of support and lots of noise, and it will be exciting,” he said. “At the top level, it’s very aggressive and very physical … people hit the ball quite hard.” Croquet Victoria president Jim Clement said the sport is growing in popularity, with 89 clubs and more than 2800 members in Victoria. Admission to games is free by registering at croquetvic.asn.au LESTER HUGHES AND PRESIDENT ANDRE DANIEL-DREYFUS

Jamie Jones and Barry Russell lay back on dust-jackets depicting the goodies at Yarraville’s forthcoming record fair. (Dennis Manktelow)
Dust off the jackets By Goya Dmytryshchak In a first for this side of the West Gate Bridge, a fair of old vinyls and turntable paraphernalia will be held at Yarraville next month. Fair convenor and community radio DJ ‘Lord Lucifer’ – whose name refers to the blues being long known as ‘the devil’s music’ – said while demographic of Melbourne’s west is rapidly changing, there are still no record shops here. “If people anywhere in the west wanted to go and buy vinyl, a stylus or something, they’ve probably got to travel in to the city or further
afield,â€? he said. “Well this is going to change ‌ the stores are coming to the western suburbs – 40 individual commercial and private traders.â€? He said the fair would have new and vintage vinyl, LPs, 45s, rarities, collectibles, stereo supplies and repair stalls, as well as live entertainment from local DJs and musicians. Among the sellers are Yarraville’s Barry Russell, who co-owns Vinyl record store in Fitzroy; Sunshine’s Murray Saunders, who specialises in highest-quality Japanese pressings; and Jamie Jones, who started JJ’s
Vinyl online record store. “Whilst all popular genres will be available, every trader will have a specialist or niche area on offer, Lord Lucifer said. “There will be no flea market bargain bins or op-shop dross – this is a quality event aimed at the discerning collector, as well as those just starting. Yarraville Music and Record Fair will be at the Yarraville Club on February 5 from 11am-4.30pm. Stalls are still available and public entry is by gold coin donation. Details: Lord Lucifer, 0403 552 288
Maribyrnong residents are urged to have their say on their city’s future direction. Maribyrnong council has created an online survey to help shape the council plan 2017-21, while feedback will also be gathered via ‘pop-up’ consultation stalls at events including Thursday’s Stony Creek Festival and Friday’s Quang Minh Tet Festival. Suggestions to help to identify key priorities and make best use of council resources can also be made via Have Your Say postcards at more than 50 collection points. Workshops will be held 10am-noon February 11 at RecWest Braybrook, 6-8pm February 15 at VU at MetroWest and 10am-noon February 19 at Maribyrnong Community Centre. Take the online survey at maribyrnong. engagementhq.com or reserve a workshop place at communityengagement@ maribyrnong.vic.gov.au or on 9688 0200. A draft will be put out for further comment in April and May. Benjamin Millar

Super-heroes, jail inmates and a new spin on Sherlock Holmes will feature women in many guises as the western suburbs’ own theatre ensemble takes to the stage. The season puts women in the spotlight in a series of productions celebrating their contribution to theatre. Artistic director Belinda Campbell said women often only feature in supporting roles, and stories by women are hard to find. “Every actor, director and writer involved is a woman,” Ms Campbell said. She said the casts will also reflect the community, featuring actors from diverse cultural backgrounds, of differing sexuality and some with disabilities. “At the heart of it all is great storytelling.” The company continues a second year of its Braybrook Community Hub-based children’s outreach program, Wit Kids, as well as Sundays at the Church workshops. MY PLACE Altona North’s Graham Jarry, better known as father of Australian Opals’ star Rachel, was recently recognised for his own sporting achievements as a Cricket Victoria outstanding volunteer award recipient. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I’ve lived in the inner west – Yarraville, Spotswood and, more recently Altona North – for most of my life (seven years in Point Cook the exception). Most of my community involvements, apart from my own girls’ schools and sports, has been with the Yarraville Cricket Club, where I started playing at around 13 or 14 years of age. What do you like about Altona North? Altona North is undergoing massive change. The original larger-sized blocks are being developed with many newly-designed townhouses adding to the area. Young families are realising that accessibility to schools, Melbourne CBD, the sporting precincts and ease of transport/travel in general are important life features.
About the suburb, not a lot to be honest. It has a good mix of the old and new at present. If I could change one thing it would be the internet speed (take note Telstra). What’s your favourite cafe and/or eatery? I’m comfortable with a good old steak or parma at any of the pubs or clubs in the area. That’s more my scene. Tell me about your award and volunteering? Takes a village to retire fit and well If you’re one of the 10,000 or so Hobsons Bay residents aged more than 65, and you’re considering your housing options this year, you’re not alone, says Marcelle Wilson, Victorian regional manager for Lendlease’s Retirement Living business. “The new year is a common time for people to evaluate their circumstances, and plan for a change,” she says. “Australia’s retirement living communities are home to 184,000-plus older Australians, a figure that’s expected to more than double in the next decade.” Ms Wilson points out recent research from the Australian Property Council that found 46 per cent of residents report feeling happier with a greater sense of wellbeing once they choose a connected retirement community. “The same research showed residents don’t need
to visit the GP as often as others their age, and spend less time in hospital if they’re admitted.” She says residents tell her is they wish they’d made the move sooner. “All our villages provide residents with the flexibility to stay socially and physically active, while remaining connected to their community. “However, it’s the unique atmosphere at each village that many residents consider when making their choice. The best way to make an informed decision about retirement living is to experience the village first-hand.” Anyone can stop by for a cuppa and a tour of the Port Phillip Village and The Village Williamstown. Straw bales best for pain-free gardening As one lady in her 80s said: “It’s not the getting down to my vegie garden, it’s the getting up again that’s the hard part.” It’s true that as we get older, the planting, weeding, digging and even harvesting can get a bit beyond us. Downsizing to an apartment or joining a retirement community can also put a serious dent in our vegie garden aspirations. But there is a way our cherished home-grown vegies can co-exist with rickety knees, failing leg muscles and iffy backs, as well as limited garden space – a straw bale garden. Not only is a straw bale garden inexpensive, you can put it wherever you want and it’ll eventually turn into compost to feed next season’s garden – how’s that for recycling? Okay, so here’s the drill … once you’ve bought your bale(s): 1. Choose a sunny spot for permanent placement when it’s still dry (it gets mighty heavy once wet). If on grass, lay newspaper layers or cardboard beneath it to prevent weeds growing up through it. To avoid bending, you can place it on a knee-high surface – leaving about 30cm all around so that as the bale gradually decomposes, the “mess” can be easily swept into a container. 2. Position the bale so the narrow side showing cut straw ends is facing up – this allows better moisture penetration. 3. Condition the bale first. For the first three days, water it thoroughly so it stays damp. For the next six days, continue watering and add a liquid fertiliser. On day 10, it’s back to just watering until the temperature inside the bale (it gets really hot) has cooled down to external air temperature. Then it’s time to plant. 4. Choose smaller plants, such as herbs, lettuces, rocket, zucchini, cucumbers, strawberries and cherry tomatoes – or flowers. Make a suitably sized hole in the bale, add in quality potting soil for extra nutrients and stability, and pop the seedling in. Fertilise every two to three weeks and don’t let the bale dry out. You’re done! Happy growing … happy knees and back … Carole Levy

SPORT City coach builds on vibe When Ben Smyth moved to Melbourne City as a player, he was thrust into an unfamiliar defensive position. Smyth was a striker with his former club, Deakin, but that all changed once he walked through the doors at the South Kingsville-based City. “They saw a tall bloke and stuck me at the back,” Smyth said with a chuckle. “Anybody with a bit of height tends to end up playing in the back four.” Spending time in defence proved a blessing in disguise for Smyth, who has just been appointed coach at Melbourne City. His outlook on the game might have been more skewed if he’d spent his whole career on the front line. “It gives you a more well-rounded view of the game,” Smyth said. “You can see the whole pitch rather than the snapshot of where you
played in your career. It certainly helped me.” Smyth is a young coach at 33, but he was the best candidate for City. The Newport resident had served a long apprenticeship under former coach Leo Malik, and worked as City’s reserves’ coach in recent seasons. He stamped his credentials when he obtained his C-licence coaching certificate. Smyth was thrilled when Melbourne City handed him the keys to the senior coaching gig. “It’s my first senior appointment, so it’s very exciting to get in there and get started,” he said. “I’ve worked fairly hard over the past four years as the reserves’ coach. “You get the respect of people around the club, and it’s got me to where I am now.” Smyth has enormous boots to fill at Melbourne City. He steps up after the hugely successful reign of Malik, who took City to a title and two promotions.
Malik was one of Smyth’s coaching mentors. “I learned a hell of a lot off him … taken a lot on board there,” Smyth said. While Smyth watched Malik closely in recent seasons, there are some things that he wants to do differently. “When you go in as coach, you obviously have your own values, and some things you might change,” Smyth said. “There’s obviously going to be tactical and disciplinary elements that we’ll look to build on.” What Smyth will not change is the atmosphere at Melbourne City. From the moment he walked into the club, he has always been made to feel welcome. “It’s a good club to be involved in,” he said. “A very tight-knit club with fantastic social culture to it. “The talent the club has available to it is fantastic too,” Smyth said. “We want to try and continue to nurture that over the next couple of years.”
■ The Werribee Football Club will hold its annual golf day at Werribee Park Golf Club on Friday, February 17, with a shotgun start at 12.30. There will be plenty of prizes and the format will be the ambrose system. Contact Darren Hellmann at dhellmann@ werribeefccom.au for details and bookings.
Sports shorts In-form Maribyrnong sprinter Joel Bee took the 2017 St Albans Gift at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday night. Bee won the 120m handicapped race in 12.665 seconds, just ahead of Kevin Brittain (12.824) and Sophie Taylor (12.831). The 120m Women’s Gift was won by Megan McMahon, who hit the line in 14.424 seconds, before Kasey Moore (14.600) and Jessica Payne (14.604). The 2017 Maribyrnong Gift takes place again at Pennell Reserve in Braybrook on Australia Day. Racing begins at noon with the 120m Open Gift final at 4.40pm.
Baseball
Newport Rams were at their best on Sunday in an 11-2 mauling of Sandringham in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. It was the Rams’ sixth win of the season, clearing them from the relegation zone.
Williamstown Wolves had a 6-1 win over Ballarat in division 2. Two and a half games outside the top four, the Wolves remain a long shot to feature in finals.

Footscray Edgewater remains in the Premier Cricket finals contention after a 68-run win over Essendon at Windy Hill on Saturday. Footscray Edgewater will host Carlton in a crucial two-day game at Merv Hughes Oval starting on Saturday.

Altona secured first innings’ points on day one against a listless Endeavour Hills in sub-district cricket at the Frank Kirk Oval on Saturday. Shannon Clarke took 7-20 off 20.5 overs, including 12 maidens, as Endeavour Hills perished for 68. Altona powered to 3-186 at stumps with David Kinsella (71 not out) the top-scorer. Yarraville (1-122) also took first innings
■ The annual Australia Day Maribyrnong Gift will take place at Pennell Reserve in Braybrook on Thursday. Local athletics legend Terry McGarity tells me the surface is top class and rivals the MCG it is so good, thanks to the work done by Mark Scholes and the parks and gardens crew. Meghan McMahon will be trying for back-to-back wins and is in good form after winning recently at Daylesford. The defending men’s champion is Tim Rosen. The day’s events begin at noon with the feature race at 4.40pm. Entry is free and there will be food and drink available. ■ Many local cricket clubs will be participating in the annual pink stumps day. Hoppers Crossing’s event will be on Saturday, February 18. Little River’s event will be held on Saturday, February 25, when it hosts Winchelsea. A Redbacks past players day will be part of the celebrations. Hoppers Crossing has had a very ordinary season with the bat, falling short of three figures again last week when rolled for 91. That was the same tally Werribee coach Tim O’Brien scored for the Tigers last Saturday and James Damjanovski notched up for Yarraville Club.
The senior coaching door opened at Melbourne City for Ben Smyth when his former mentor Leo Malik departed for Westvale Olympic. (Damjan Janevski)

■ The Australian cricket selectors are not googling for Jonathan Brown’s telephone number after his debut for the Yarraville Club Cricket Club in the VTCA. The triple Lions AFL premiership player was not required to bat. He bowled three overs for a return of 1-22. He claimed his wicket in his first over. He made a bigger impression after the game during the “Have a Crownie with Browny” function. It is great to see some real excitement in local cricket similar to that seen with Brendan Fevola and Jason Akermanis and the like playing in suburban football. The Clubbers are on top of the ladder and Brown is expected to be available for a few more games before this season ends. The question is: Is he worth his spot in the first X1?

Browny crowns one-day crowd, but missed his bat All that matters is the win, right? Yarraville Club scored big on that front with a 112-run shellacking of Strathmore in the VTCA senior division at Hansen Reserve on Saturday. There was extra spice added to the Clubbers with former Brisbane Lions’ champion Jonathan Brown donning the coloured one-day strip for the club. Brown drew a larger than normal crowd, and the club raised money through its ‘Have a Crownie with Browny’ sportsmen’s night. But Brown’s impact in the match was limited, partly because of the Clubbers’ easy victory.
Slated to come in at No. 8, Brown never had a chance to bat, as Yarraville Club made a massive 5-235 off 40 overs, spearheaded by 91 from James Damjanovski. At least Brown had the chance to bowl. He was understandably a bit rusty, but still excited the home fans, taking 1-22 off three overs with a wicket to finish. Most of the damage was done by Emmett Bronca 3-32 and Andrew Cullen (3-7), though. Yarraville Club continues to lead the way at the top of the ladder, six points clear of second-placed Spotswood. The Woodsmen maintained their pursuit of the Clubbers with a
38-run win over Airport West-St Christophers. Trent McCormick was the stand-out for the Woodsmen with 78, while Ashley Robertson took a team-high 3-14. In north-west division, Indika Gallage took 8-20 as the Druids slaughtered St Albans by 121 runs to consolidate third spot. An even team performance saw Altona North pull off a shock 23-run win over second-placed West Coburg, but there were losses for Laverton, Seddon and Footscray United. Lance Jenkinson

Open’s cash a launchpad By Lance Jenkinson Andrew Whittington had to reach the Australian Open men’s singles draw the hard way. Travelling the country to play in low-key Challenger events has been the norm for the hard-working Williamstown resident. Scrounging enough money to target overseas events was his reality. There has been plenty of success along the way, of course, but it has mainly come in the doubles format, so the 23-year-old treasured his place among the elite at his home grand slam last week. Whittington reaped about $80,000 from his Open experience, precious prizemoney that will help springboard his career. “I think it’s going straight to the bank, that’s a wise option isn’t it?” he said after losing in the Australian Open second round in straight sets to Croatian Ivo Karlovic. “I probably won’t head to the casino and put it on black. I’ll chuck it in the bank and it will support me for the rest of my tennis career.”
Whittington’s decision to focus more on his singles game in the past year has paid dividends. He showed enough improvement for Tennis Australia to grant him an Open wildcard. Now that Whittington has tasted singles action at a grand slam, he wants more. “Hanging around that level, that’s where you obviously want to be. “I’m ranked at 170, so I obviously want to try and push my ranking up towards those guys and play them day in, day out.” Whittington’s run came to an end at the hands of Karlovic in an entertaining 6-4 6-4 6-4 match. Karlovic, a battle-hardened pro, showed the young western suburbs player what it takes to move into the upper echelon of the tennis world. Karlovic was more efficient on his serve, showed his power at the baseline after years of refining his body in the gym, and used his nous in crucial points. It was a match that showed the fine lines between a youngster on the rise and a seasoned pro, but it was an encouraging performance from Whittington, who had five break-point
32 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 25, 2017
opportunities, which, frustratingly, he could not convert. Whittington appeared to have enjoyed the experience, even if his bunch of bananas courtside came off a little worse for wear after he slammed them down in frustration at one point in the third set. “I could’ve played a little bit better, but, all in all, it’s still a great experience,” Whittington reflected. “I just take a lot from the match and learn from it. “Serve and volley let me down a little bit today. “I thought I actually returned not too badly. I made a decent amount of returns and made him play a lot of balls. “If I take one or two of those [break points] it could be different.” It’s back to the grind for Whittington, who has begun his preparations for an upcoming Challenger event in Tasmania. “I’ll just keep playing day in and day out and keep fighting for each match,” he said. “I’m enjoying it and that’s the main thing for me; otherwise I wouldn’t play the sport.”
Jonathan Brown goes through his batting technique before the game. (Shawn Smits)
Young gun hones star qualities on centre court Andrew Whittington left nothing in reserve during his first Australian Open men’s singles main draw appearance. It was a whirlwind time for the Williamstown young gun, who went from a relative unknown to a first round winner at his home grand slam. “Hopefully, it’s a stepping stone in my career,” the 23 year old said. “It was a great learning experience.” In the days before the tournament, there were question marks over whether Whittington would take his place in the main draw, after being granted a wildcard. Whittington used the Kooyong Classic as his primary lead-up event, but had to retire against Russian Mikhail Youzhny after rolling his ankle. It was a worrying time; Whittington had worked for years to get to this point in his career, serving a long apprenticeship at the Australian Open in the doubles, at one point advancing to the quarter finals. Facing a race against the clock, Whittington worked hard to be fit and firing for the Open, thanking his support team for getting him in shape for the first round. And what a main draw debut it was – the Liston Tennis Club product blew away Czech Republic’s more fancied Adam Pavlasek in four sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Whittington later said that he wasn’t overawed to play at the Open having experience at Melbourne Park in the doubles, but he admitted the first set was an undoubted confidence booster. When Pavlasek took the second set, Whittington knew he had it in him to fight back in the match. One break in the third set was followed by another as Whittington took control. While Whittington fronted world media in Melbourne Park’s main interview room, there was an epic battle going on outside with 20th seeded Croatian Ivo Karlovic and leftie Argentine Horacio Zeballos, a match that saw Karlovic win 22-20 in an incredible fifth set. It was relevant for Whittington as the winner would be his next opponent. Would the unusually long match work in Whittington’s favour? The answer was a definitive no, as Karlovic showed no signs of wear when the players met in the second round. At age 37, Karlovic knows every trick in the book, and was extremely efficient in beating Whittington 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 on court eight. While Whittington was far from disgraced, his inability to win break points – five went begging – or hold serve early in sets would come back to bite him. But as for that learning curve, it does not get any better. A win over a top-75 player and a competitive showing against a top-20 player suggests this young man may be a permanent fixture at the Australian Open for years yet. Meanwhile, Whittington plays in the men’s doubles with teammate Marc Polmans today. They face France’s Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the quarter final. Lance Jenkinson

Sun shines on criterium Round 23 of racing in Footscray Cycling Club’s Summer Criterium saw a whopping 110 riders head out to the west’s Drake Boulevard at Altona on a perfect summer’s day. Riders were fronting up to contest five levels of racing and, as an extra treat, the female-only novice criterium recorded a great turnout, identifying a number of potential stars having their first crack at racing. In A-grade, Footscray club champion Dom Dudkiewicz had to work hard for his 30th consecutive criterium win. “It was not a typical A-grade race, it was a very good race, lots of strong riders,” he said. “Even though the pace was inconsistent, it was hard all the way, lots of attacks and chasing, an entertaining surging race. “I tried a few breaks, but today was not the day. At the end, Daniel Hopper went and tried to go solo, but there were a few guys who put
some hard turns in, and we got him back on the last lap,” Dudkiewicz said. “Then I came around the last corner on Jason Costin’s wheel and we went for the line.” Dudkiewicz took the sprint from Costin in second and Mathias Kiernan in third. A large field of riders started the women’s event, with Corinne Rice taking the bunch sprint from Gina McVicar and Fiona Login. Rice thoroughly enjoyed the experience. “That was fun,” she said. “I have been a recreational rider for about 10 years, and seven years of bunch riding with boys, so I decided to have a go and try something a bit more challenging. “At the end, I found myself out the front, and being left there on the last lap, so when I rounded the last corner, I just went for it.” Mark Micallef

Rebuilding for survival’s sake By Lance Jenkinson St Andrews Footscray has been forced to recalibrate its thinking in the VTCA’s north-west A1 competition. For much of coach Phil Crea’s three summers at Pennell Reserve, finals cricket has been the pass mark for the Saints, but with key personnel changes in recent off-seasons has come a change of mindset. Now, the goal is merely survival. “As long as we don’t get relegated, we will have had a successful season and we can build on that,” Crea said. “In the past two years we’ve lost four strike bowlers and it’s hurt us. At least we’re blooding some young blokes now, so we’re going in the right direction.” St Andrews entered the weekend rock bottom of the division, but a win over Williamstown CYMS saw it jump out of the relegation zone, and not before time. The optimists will say the Saints are still in with a mathematical chance of reaching the finals. While Crea will never say never on that
front, he is realistic that it remains as only a slim chance. “It’s a close competition,” the coach said. “We beat the top side just before Christmas, so anyone on their given day can beat anyone. “At this stage, avoiding relegation is our main concern along with giving our young blokes a good culture to play in the higher grade and to see where they have to go to get to that level. “We’ve got a few things planned for the next couple of years and one of those is putting more time into the kids. “We want to build a culture where the club can have a successful run for three to five years.” St Andrews recently celebrated the 300-game milestone of club stalwart Mick Gregory. The man known as ‘MG’ is highly regarded for his dedication to both training and work behind the scenes. “Since I’ve been at St Andrews, he’s hardly missed a training run,” Crea said. “If he’s not playing a game of cricket, he’s always there supporting the senior side. “To play 300 games at one club, that’s an unbelievable thing. St Andrews is not just a club for him, it’s his family as well.”
