Nick’s left a giant hole

Footscray’s iconic Olympic Doughnuts is shutting up shop. The Footscray station institution, opened by Nick Tsiligiris in 1979, is wrapping up due to Mr Tsiligiris’s ongoing health issues. His daughter Gina Hasapis said it was a difficult decision to close, but Olympic Doughnuts and its 80-cent hot jam doughnuts was always about her father. “The decision had been made, long before Nick’s health issues, that when it came time for him to hang up his tongs so to speak, it would mean the end of an era,” she said. “It’s Nick’s legacy and we wanted it to remain that way.” Ms Hasapis said the public’s overwhelming support had left Nick and the family speechless. “Many times we have taken solace in the love and support shown not only to Nick but to the family,” she said. “That means the world to us.” The family was forced in October to quash rumours that Mr Tsiligiris had died after a ‘Rest in Peace’ poster was taped to the front of the Olympic Doughnuts stall, whose closure early last year was supposed to be temporary but has become permanent. A short film Olympic Nick: A Donutumentary will broadcast on ABC2 this Friday night. Benjamin Millar

Shelter plan for homeless By Benjamin Millar A groundbreaking deal has been struck on a housing project aimed at tackling homelessness in Melbourne’s west. Not-for-profit agency Launch Housing has applied to locate 57 one-bedroom townhouses across nine land parcels in Footscray and Maidstone. The relocatable homes would be set on VicRoads land in a $5 million project underpinned by a $4 million donation from businessmen Geoff and Brad Harris. The vacant land has been reserved for the possible future widening of Ballarat Road. Launch Housing deputy chief executive officer Heather Holst said the project could

serve as a pilot for addressing the need to house people experiencing homelessness. “It certainly is an exciting opportunity, not only because it provides 57 units for single people in well-designed accommodation but also as the start of a bigger roll-out of housing in other well-located areas.” While concerns have been raised on social media about the suitability of the location and the “clustering” of the homes, Ms Holst said people’s fears about housing for the homeless rarely eventuated. “People who have lost their home know the value of a home,” she said. Brad Harris said he and his father were putting up the money as they saw homelessness as one of Melbourne’s biggest issues. “It appealed because of the vast number of

which can be prefabricated at the rate of one per day at a cost of about $80,000 each. He said situating the homes across nine locations should help allay fears of people experiencing difficulty being clustered together. Acting Roads Minister Philip Dalidakis said the partnership would help those most in need in the community. Maribyrnong Council director of planning services Nigel Higgins said two of the nine applications had been approved, and up to five An artist’s impression of the transportable units objections had been lodged for each application. planned for Ballarat Road. Court calls carpet clean act crook By Goya Dmytryshchak A carpet cleaner who forced elderly people to use his services, leaving one woman too scared to sleep, has been ordered by the Supreme Court to cease trading for five years. David James Donald, 73, of Reservoir, has also been ordered to pay more than $17,000 in refunds, damages, penalties and costs. Victoria’s consumer watchdog took action against Donald after receiving complaints from five victims between late 2015 and early 2016, including elderly couples in Altona and

Kyneton. Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV) said Donald’s illegal sales tactics included demanding upfront cash payments and failing to provide his full name or give a 10-day cooling off period. His victims included an 86-year-old Altona woman, who said Donald claimed to have cleaned her carpets seven years previously and insisted they needed cleaning again. Donald and his associate did not give their names or discuss how much the cleaning was going to cost, the court heard. He used the same tactic with an 87-year-old

Altona woman. Another woman, 89, said Donald pressured her to have her carpets cleaned and to offer him coffee and biscuits. She said the carpet stayed wet for several days and still appeared dirty, with new brown stains. The court heard the woman was frightened by Donald and she did not believe she could get him to leave her home. The court heard Donald also pressured his way into the home of a 74-year-old Kyneton man, who suffers chronic lung disease and requires oxygen and assistance to move around, demanding $500 in cash for carpet cleaning.

CAV director Simon Cohen said a public warning had been issued against Donald last April after he defied Supreme Court orders to conduct his business lawfully. “Donald’s aggressive tactics left vulnerable consumers in distress, and often significantly out of pocket,” Mr Cohen said. “Strict laws apply to door-to-door sales to ensure consumers are not forced to make costly decisions on the spot.” Victorians with concerns about door-to-door salespeople can contact Consumer Affairs Victoria on 1300 558 181.

This year’s winner will be crowned by Andrea Jaca-Smith, the reigning Miss Transsexual Australia. Ms Jaca-Smith said the pageant was a godsend. “I could not be happier winning it. It came just a few weeks before I was going to complete my lifelong dream to become a woman, in Thailand.” This year’s winner will collect more than $20,000 in cash and prizes, including optional surgery at one of Thailand’s leading cosmetic hospitals for transgender surgery. Agents fined for low house quotes By Benjamin Millar A Yarraville real estate agency has been fined $45,000 after deliberately underquoting property values up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hocking Stuart Yarraville franchisee L&L Dardha Real Estate has admitted breaching laws during the sales of six residential properties in the inner west, knowing the vendors were likely to sell for much more than the prices advertised. Directors Leo and Leigh Dardha also admitted to advertising properties online at prices likely to mislead potential purchasers.

Investigations by Consumer Affairs Victoria’s Taskforce Vesta found underquoting took place on six properties at Footscray, West Footscray, Yarraville, Altona North and Brooklyn. The investigation included a property at 63 Ballarat Road, Footscray, which was advertised at a selling price of $1 million-plus, but sold in December 2015 for $2.11 million. A property at 1 Gordon Parade, Yarraville was advertised at “mid-to-high $800,000s”, despite a request by the vendor that it be promoted at $895,000. Agent Leigh Dardha sent an email stating: “With the quote range, leave this with me, we

are going to start of (sic) at $850-plus (sic) to get people through the door and then bump the price up the second week of the campaign. It’s just a little marking (sic) ploy we do.” Documents reveal the signed authority for a West Footscray property at 704 Barkly Street gave the agent’s estimated selling range as $600,000 to $660,000, yet almost 20 emails to prospective purchasers estimated the price at $550,000-plus. The property sold in December 2015 for $687,500. Hocking Stuart Yarraville director Leo Dardha said the agency sincerely regrets “the mistakes” made in 2015.

“Our team has since worked hard with our franchisor’s compliance team to ensure this doesn’t happen again and are in the process of implementing Consumer Affairs Victoria’s requirements.” Hocking Stuart chief executive Simon Jovanovic said the company categorically rejects unlawful activity. “We have worked with this office to ensure it doesn’t happen again … if any of our franchisees are found to be engaged in this conduct, there will be severe penalties that may include suspension or termination.” Acting consumer affairs minister Lisa Neville said underquoting is illegal.

With pride, march unites then-mayor Tony Briffa lead the west holding the GOWEST banner. People’s drawings, photos and artworks from the workshops will become the exhibition. Work from the exhibition will also be published in a commemorative exhibition catalogue. Centre manager Kim Reilly said everyone was invited to attend. “It’s about inclusion and acceptance,” she said. “Take sexuality out, take race out, take religion out, we’re all human beings. We’re all going to walk with pride.” For workshop information and details email louisjl@bigpond.net.au or admin@louisjlcc. com.au For details on other GOWEST events go to hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/gowest Goya Dmytryshchak

Holden on to good times By Goya Dmytryshchak It seems everywhere you go in Australia, someone has a Holden story. So novelist Paddy O’Reilly collected them and put them in a book titled It happened in a Holden. Altona Homestead is hosting a display of Holden memorabilia, opening on Australia Day, January 26, with a panel discussion from 1.30 to 2.30 featuring Ms O’Reilly and guests telling stories about the Aussie icon. “We’ll be inviting people to tell their own Holden stories as well,” she said. “No matter where I go in Australia, as soon people hear I’ve

edited a book of Holden stories, everyone has one to tell me. It’s extraordinary. And then by sheer coincidence that terrible thing happened: as soon I started collecting the stories Holden announced it was shutting down in Australia.” Stories in the book have been compiled from a cross-section of Australians, including from well known identities and everyday enthusiasts sourced from Holden car clubs and the like. “The one thing that has come through really clearly is that people don’t love their cars the way that we used to,” Ms O’Reilly said. “I think because they change them over so much and they don’t have as long a life and you can’t fix

them yourself. I think you can’t identify with a car now as something that’s part of the family like it used to be.” Writer Kelly Gardiner is among many who have detailed their Holden family history in the book. “My grandfather’s was the first, and one of the original models – brand new,” she said. “Who’d ever heard of such a thing? After that, everyone had Holdens. Pop traded up to a pale-green EJ wagon; Dad had a flash two-tone FC; Uncle Phil and Aunty Myrtle had an even flasher gold FX. Later generations graduated to Kingswoods and Toranas and a very posh Statesman with venetian blinds.”

Police detected 141 errant motorists in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong during a Christmas holiday blitz dubbed Operation Roadwise. The operation ran from December 16 to January 8. In Hobsons Bay, police caught eight drink-drivers, 10 disqualified or unlicensed drivers, nine speeding motorists and four drivers using a mobile phone. In Maribyrnong, they nabbed 14 drink-drivers, four disqualified or unlicensed drivers, six speedsters, six people not wearing a seatbelt, and 19 drivers on the phone. There were 32 unregistered vehicles detected in Hobsons Bay and 28 in Maribyrnong. Under hoon legislation, police impounded one vehicle in Maribyrnong. Acting Senior Sergeant Tim Jacobs said that during the 24-day blitz, 15 people died on Victoria’s roads – four more than for the same period last year. “The operation saw police saturating the roads across the Westgate division in an effort to reduce road trauma throughout the high-risk summer period,” he said. “Alcohol, drugs, speed, fatigue and distraction … unfortunately, police saw far too many risks every day of the 24-day operation.” There were 278 people killed on Victoria’s roads last year, 40 more than in 2015. Noel Dyson is running an adult bicycle education class. (Damjan Janevski)

Safe cycling a fine art Even seasoned cyclists can get caught out when it comes to road laws and traffic safety. Last year, a cyclist lost a Melbourne Magistrates Court appeal after being fined for passing on the left side of a stationary car in Melbourne’s CBD. VicRoads is reviewing the law. Noel Dyson of the Hobsons Bay Bicycle User Group said a traffic safety education class for adult cyclists will be held in Newport on Sunday. He said the class will cover aspects of bike education that children are taught at school, such as what cyclists should do when going through a roundabout. “There’s an awful lot of people (cyclists) who … mostly stick to the left, and that puts them

at risk of being hit on exit as well as on entry,” Mr Dyson said. “It’s essential that you have to occupy the lane and it involves learning to be assertive out on the road – not putting yourself in harm’s way but then again enforcing your right.” Mr Dyson said the class would help cyclists to be responsible road users. “We wear bright colours and it’s just following what’s actually stated on the VicRoads’ website – wear bright colours, don’t wear dark colours. “Many people ride black bikes dressed in black and I say, well there you go – roadkill.” The class is from 10am-2pm on Sunday. An online survey about Newport’s Digman Reserve asks residents to help Hobsons Bay council develop a masterplan for the 4.5 hectare site. The council wants to know how residents use the reserve now, and it also wants to hear from people or sports groups that don’t use the reserve but need extra playing surfaces. The survey closes February 17. Details: 9932 1131.

Algal blooms raise shellfish alert By Goya Dmytryshchak People are being warned not to eat shellfish from Hobsons Bay after two marine algal blooms were detected at the mouth of the Yarra River. DELWP spokesman Chris Eagle said two algal blooms had been detected at the mouth of the Yarra. “We are undertaking further sampling today to assess the bloom and will continue to monitor it until it disperses or moves on following the currents of the bay, he said on Wednesday. “As the warm weather continues we are likely to see more of these blooms in the bay, which

Clamps on beach theft Hobsons Bay has become the first Victorian council to install beach lockers for people to store their personal belongings. The 60 lockers, next to Norfolk cafe on the Esplanade, will be available for hire seven days a week from 8am-7.30pm. People can hire a locker by showing photo ID and buying a $5 waterproof wristband from the cafe. It’s an initiative of the Hobsons Bay council, Victoria Police, Altona Village Traders Association and Altona Life Saving Club. Mayor Sandra Wilson said providing the public beach lockers was a simple but important service. “We want people to have a positive experience when they’re in our city, and if the lockers can provide convenience, security and peace of mind, that’s a great outcome, she said. Police Inspector Michelle Young said the lockers would help combat theft of valuables

left on the beach or in cars. “Last summer, there were incidents of theft while people were swimming or away from their spots on the beach, she said. “Victoria Police are confident that public use of the new beach lockers at Altona foreshore will contribute to safety of property while people are enjoying the beach. “I would encourage people to use them rather than having to replace property through theft or damage. Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh said the lockers were also raising awareness of the need for beachgoers to protect their belongings. “We’re seeing some wonderful results already, including groups of children chipping in to share a locker and positive feedback from people who have previously lost their valuables on the beach, Mr Walsh said. Suspicious fire impacts freeway

Lorna Rolley with her great-grandchildren. (Damjan Janevski)

Happy 100th for Lorna By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown identity and Australia’s oldest female lacrosse club member, Lorna Rolley (nee Saker), last Friday celebrated her 100th birthday. Born in Williamstown, Mrs Rolley briefly lived in Sydney before returning to Williamstown aged 12. Eldest daughter Susan Rainey said her mother had experienced much in her 100 years and had been open to many changes that came her way.

Ms Rainey said that started with the loss of her mother at the age of 12, with five younger siblings, and then travelling from Sydney to Melbourne on the train to live with their paternal grandmother. Mrs Rolley has been involved with Electra Street Methodist Church over the many years, from being a Sunday school teacher to these days being a member of the ladies’ guild. “She has always been active and participated in many sports, including tennis, squash, surfing, bike riding, hiking, basketball,

swimming, horse riding and sailing, and is the oldest living female lacrosse player in Australia,” Ms Rainey said. Mrs Rolley credits her long and healthy life to exercise and living by the sea. During World War II, her late husband Harry, known as Ted, served in the navy. He passed away in 2012 at the age of 95. Mrs Rolley lives at Baptcare Westhaven Community in Footscray. She has three children, seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A grassfire at Altona North on Tuesday of last week is among numerous recent fires in Melbourne’s west that have been deemed suspicious. The fire started in the Laverton Grasslands in Kororoit Creek Road, about 200 metres east of Burns Road, about 2.40pm. About 50 MFB and CFA firefighters fought the blaze in difficult windy conditions. The fire cut a swathe across the grassland to the edge of the Princes Freeway. Police were forced to close several lanes of the freeway due to smoke, while drivers were told to use their headlights. The blaze brought peak hour traffic to a standstill and was banked up four kilometres back to the West Gate Bridge. The fire was officially brought under control at 3.51pm, and all freeway lanes were reopened by 4.30pm. Victoria Police spokeswoman, Leading Senior Constable Lee Thomson said an arson chemist examined the orgin of the fire, which has been deemed suspicious. Firefighters battled two grassfires deliberately lit within 10 minutes of each other on Saturday night, in Fitzgerald Road, Sunshine West, and Federation Walk, Cairnlea. Police later arrested a 40-year-old Attwood man in relation to those fires. Anyone with information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Goya Dmytryshchak

Stay on board between Altona and the city From 30 January 2017, the Altona Loop will have more direct services to and from the city. NEWS

MY PLACE Writer and psychogeographer Nick Gadd has spent years walking around Melbourne, yet the inner west is still dearest to his heart. He talks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Yarraville? We moved to Yarraville more than 20 years ago and have never wanted to live anywhere else. What do you love most about living here? I love the layers of history in the inner west, especially industrial history. It’s evident in the old factories, the architecture, the signage and the land itself. I regret the fact that we sometimes destroy things thoughtlessly. A lovely old Ecks lemonade sign on Somerville Road, Yarraville, got painted over just a few weeks ago … one of the last in Melbourne – gone. Do you have a favourite local place or places?

(Pat Scala)

The signage on the former tailor’s shop on Somerville Road; the former coffee palace in Yarraville; the Beehive building on Melbourne Road, Williamstown. And the view of the docks and container yards on Coode Island at dawn is stunning. How did you develop your interest in psychogeography, what keeps you interested?

What were the most surprising finds of your Melbourne Circle journey?

I’d been interested in ghost signs, history and architecture for some time, but Tony Birch introduced me to psychogeography while I was studying at Melbourne uni. I wander the suburbs, looking out for traces of the past and researching what lies behind them. It’s an endless fascination … the smallest thing can lead to a story.

The story of the greyhound racing track of Sunshine with its monkey jockeys was amazing … I would love to hear from anyone who remembers it. I was surprised to find that the shabby building on Paisley Street, Footscray, with crumbling Fiesta Bingo signage was a popular cinema – the Grand – until the 1980s. And I was delighted when I managed to

decipher the faded name of the Williamstown and Newport Underclothing Depot, a Victorian shop on Melbourne Road. How has the project changed the way you think about Melbourne and the inner-west? I’ve become aware of the richness of ordinary suburban streets. I knew the inner west had a proud industrial and cultural history, but I hadn’t investigated it in depth until I started

exploring on foot. Knowing the history of a place gives you a stronger connection to it. Do you have any writing projects underway? I’m working on a book about walking and psychogeography in Melbourne. Retrace Nick Gadd’s circumnavigation of Melbourne on foot through his online project. Details at melbournecircle.net.

JAPANESE PANCAKES If there’s one new year’s resolution I intend to keep, it’s to make a batch of Japanese pancakes. Impossibly fat and fluffy, it’s not hard to see why they’re all the rage. By adding beaten egg whites to your basic pancake mix, the height you achieve would give the Eureka Tower a run for its money. Recently I was raving about Japanese pancakes to a work colleague. I showed him a how-to video on YouTube, and the next thing I knew, he’d welcomed in 2017 with the ultimate breakfast, casually whipping up Japanese pancakes for his wife on New Year’s Day (as you can see from the photo he sent me, they looked pretty impressive!).

DAVE ‘HIGGO’ HIGGINS TRIPLE M PRESENTER AND FOUNDER OF DISTORTION WITH HIGGO

Have a try yourself and let me know how you go.

FLUFFY JAPANESE PANCAKES Mix together 2 egg yolks, ¼ cup of sugar, ½ cup of milk and ¾ cup of pancake mix (the dry variety) in a large bowl until it’s smooth. In another bowl, beat 4 egg whites until stiff peaks form, then carefully fold into the pancake mixture (don’t over mix it or you’ll deflate the batter).

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? DH: I’m a better cook than I am a gymnast. FB: What is your signature dish? DH: Pasta sauce. I was going to say steak, but my pasta sauce has been an ever evolving beast … laden with garlic, chilli and some loosely guarded secrets. FB: What is your favourite food? DH: Pork belly, that’s a sometimes food that’s right up there. Equally, I love peanut butter on toast, Vegemite on crumpets, and barbecued corn.

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? DH: Garlic bread, prawn cocktails, pork belly, roast vegies, rib eye (rare), some penne carbonara on the side … thick-cut beer-battered chips with chicken salt (aioli on the side for dippin’) and an assortment of ice creams and toppings ...

Grease two 3.5 inch metal ring moulds and set them in the middle of a greased frypan over the lowest heat possible. Fill moulds three-quarters full with batter, then cover pan and cook for about 10 minutes, until the centre jiggles slightly. Carefully flip over and cook for another 5 minutes. Serve with butter, maple syrup and berries. As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: What is your favourite drink? DH: Bourbon. Closely followed by water, often mixed together. I like Slurpees too. They’re technically a drink … with bourbon in them, they’re called Slurbons. FB: What’s your favourite TV food show and who’s your favourite TV food person? DH: Nigela Lawson … she makes no apologies for anything she creates – rich, delicious, hearty dishes. Honourable mentions to Rob Rainford … and Jamie Oliver for his haphazard approach to measuring and ‘throwing things together’. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? DH: Spend the money on good knives, a chopping board and heavy frying pan.

“A mighty porterhouse steak an inch and a half thick, hot and sputtering from the griddle … mushrooms; a township or two of tender, yellowish fat.” – Mark Twain on his perfect steak

SPORT Attack backs up more Maynard mastery Altona didn’t have too many runs to defend but still came away with a comfortable 59-run win over Hoppers Crossing in sub-district cricket at Hogans Road Reserve on Sunday. The A’s could muster only 193 off 79.2 overs, leaving them susceptible to an upset loss. Aaron Maynard raised the bat for a second half century in the new year with 52, while Sean Hollins boosted the score with 48. If Altona couldn’t hang their hat on their batting, they certainly could do so on their bowling. The attack made light work of the Hoppers Crossing line-up, skittling the home side for 134. Mitchell Cullen had a remarkable first XI debut for Altona with 4-26 off 17 overs, while Shannon Clarke’s amazing summer continued with a tight 2-21 off 23 overs, including 14 maidens, and Adam Yates finished with 2-8 from 5.5. The win consolidates Altona’s place in the top six ahead of a two-day bout with Endeavour

Altona skipper Adam Yates avoids temptation, and danger. (Damjan Janevski)

Hills at Grant Reserve, starting on Saturday. Williamstown is still top of the charts after a gutsy three-wicket win over impressive new boys Taylors Lakes at Lionhearts Reserve. Set a tough target of 252, the Seagulls got there on the back of half centuries to captain Dale McDonald (61), opener Patrick O’Malley

(73) and the in-form Matthew Dervan (50). The Seagulls will host third-placed Noble Park in a two-day blockbuster at the Williamstown Cricket Ground beginning on Saturday. Yarraville will need a miracle to play finals after slumping to a third straight loss. The Eagles were bowled out for 116, well short of Croydon’s 9-199 declared. Yarraville will entertain fellow strugglers Hoppers Crossing at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday. In VTCA’s senior division, Spotswood had to work hard to secure a 24-run win over Tullamarine at Leo Dineen Reserve. Gene Maurice was the cornerstone to the Woodsmen’s win with 86, his best score of the season. Yarraville Club extended its time at the top of the ladder with a 45-run win over Airport West-St Christophers at Hansen Reserve. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Australia’s latest cricket pin-up boy Billy Stanlake has a western suburbs connection. His father Warren played one senior match for the Footscray Bulldogs in 1981. Warren wore the red white and blue against Collingwood in round two of that year for a 94-point loss. His statistics were eight kicks and two handballs. At 189 centimetres in his playing days, Warren is much shorter than his beanpole son who stands at 204cm (6 foot 8 in the old language). Warren wore jumper number 26. Let’s hope his son has a long career at cricket’s elite level. One game is not something either would want as a family tradition. ■ Werribee Cricket Club first XI is still reeling after being knocked over for 48 last week while chasing a modest 132 set by Balwyn at Chirnside Park. The much-heralded Tigers’ sub-district batting line-up crumbled and now faces the prospect of missing the finals. They’re now eighth on the ladder, needing some good results to figure at the season’s pointy end. Williamstown is on top of the ladder and favourite for the flag. In VTCA, Yarraville Club Cricket Club rolls out Jonathon Brown this Saturday, adding more power to its top-of-the-ladder team. The former Lions AFL skipper is a highly rated cricketer and there will be no shortage of eyes tracking his progress this weekend. ■ The Hoppers Crossing Sports Club will be the venue for a fundraiser for motor neurone disease sufferer Bruce Cronin on Saturday, February 18, from 1 till 4pm. Bruce has been diagnosed with the disease known as ‘the Beast’, which was brought to public attention by fellow sufferer Neale Daniher. The family day has been organised to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for Bruce and other sufferers. Footscray football legend Doug Hawkins will be there to tell a few stories, and there will be auctions, raffles, door prizes and sports memorabilia up for grabs. Come along to show your support.

No-fuss Russ sets pace By Lance Jenkinson Footscray Edgewater evergreen Dean Russ never ceases to amaze. Russ has ticked over 600 runs in Premier Cricket this summer at the remarkable average of 100.3. So when the Bulldogs needed a saviour against Essendon at Windy Hill on Saturday, it came as no surprise that Russ would be the one to deliver. His 109 off 134 balls was his second consecutive century and fourth of the season. “He’s taken his game to a new level, if that’s even possible,” Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight said. “He’s just getting better with age.” For the second week running, Footscray Edgewater’s top order failed to fire. On both occasions, Russ dragged the Bulldogs out of a deep hole and to a respectable total. At 4-44, Footscray Edgewater looked a side in all sorts of trouble before Russ combined with Kight (10) to put on 58 for the fifth wicket and breathe life into the innings.

Russ found another ally in Tim Buszard (45 off 148) as the Bulldogs started to wrest control of the day. When Russ went out, Footscray Edgewater’s score was 6-155, of which he had made 70 per cent, such was his dominance. “He looked unbelievable at the crease today when everyone else [in the top order] found it pretty tough,” Kight said. “He didn’t try to over-hit anything or deliberately target any bowlers, but they didn’t bowl great to him and he exploited them.” Footscray Edgewater still needed runs from elsewhere to take the challenge up to Essendon. But for the some breathtaking batting from the lower order, the Bulldogs would not have got anywhere near their 320 off 94.2 overs. Buszard and Hamish Winter-Irving (29 off 78) provided the stability in the middle of the innings, the pair combining for 62 to take the score to 7-217. Just when Essendon thought it could rip through the Footscray Edgewater tail and have some time to bat late in the day, it was stopped in its tracks by Lucas Dredge (53) and Jonah

Koch (44no). The pair are better known for their bowling, but with a partnership of 91, they almost broke a 64-year club record for a 10th wicket stand, falling two runs short of a mark set in 1953-54 by NC Blundell and IC Stewart. Dredge was dismissed in the most frustrating fashion, run out two metres short after an over-enthusiastic “yes” call from Koch. From where the innings started to how it ended, Footscray Edgewater has reason to smile after compiling a competitive score. “At the start of the day, if you’d said 320, we’d have been happy with that,” Kight said. “The top order didn’t put it together for the second week in a row, so to get 320 without any damage from five of the top six puts it into perspective … 350 could’ve been on the cards and that would be getting into territory of a really dangerous score. “Three-hundred-and-twenty is just above par so we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves. “The first hour next week is where the game is going to be set up for either team.”

■ Another date to remember is Friday, February 10 when Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club holds its Third Man Club luncheon at Fearon Reserve. Guest speakers include Rob Quiney, Michael Brown and comedian Des Dowling. Book through Simon Hine on 0418 582 524 or simon.hine@ ksgroup.com.au

Rams embrace stars By Lance Jenkinson Newport Rams have backed Baseball Victoria’s all-star concept with two of its own stars preparing to take part in east-versus-west clash at the Melbourne Ballpark on Wednesday (January 18). The Rams have praised the lateral thinking of the competition power brokers in naming the west team the Monarchs and the east team the Reds in a nod to Melbourne baseball history. Those nicknames go back to the days when the Monarchs and the Reds were Melbourne’s two representatives in the Australian Baseball League. These days, it’s the western suburbs-based Melbourne Aces who have made the city their own in terms of the national competition. “When the concept of the all-star game was first floated, the names Monarchs and Reds weren’t part of it, so it was simply going to be east versus west,” Rams assistant coach Dean Anglin said. “For them to think a bit more laterally and embed some history of the competition is brilliant. “From our club point of view, there’s always risks with games like this and our two best players involved, but we’ll make them available – we’re happy to support it and hopefully it can become an annual thing. We’ll be behind it for as long as it keeps going.” Rams stars Matt Lawman and Jimmy Jensen will play for the Monarchs in the all-star game. Lawman has endured a tough summer with his body but is still a key cog for the Rams despite not being at 100 per cent fitness. Due to his ongoing hamstring niggle, Lawman will likely work as a designated hitter for the Monarchs. “Matty’s been in fine form all season,” Anglin said. “Every time he steps to the plate,

American import Jimmy Jensen has impressed in his brief time with the Newport Rams. (Damjan Janevski)

he’s a threat to put the ball out of the park.” Lawman, a shortstop, made it all the way to the US minor leagues with the Minnesota Twins in a decorated career. He is rightly put on a pedestal at Newport for what he has achieved at home and abroad, with all at the club taking pride in calling him their all-star. Jensen’s association with Newport has been far briefer – he arrived at the start of this season as the club’s import player. In six months, Jensen has made an incredible impression on his new teammates, holding

down a starting pitching role and excelling at the plate to be the second-best hitter behind Lawman. “It’s amazing to have a guy that comes to your organisation essentially for a six-month period and then just wears the club’s logo on his sleeve and goes out and competes every day and never wants to lose,” Anglin said. “He sits second on our batting average behind Matty. The guy is phenomenal.” Baseball Victoria has announced entry to the all-star game will be free. The first pitch will be at 7pm.

Browny pads up for Clubbers Yarraville Club Cricket Club is promoting Saturday as the day for punters to “Have a Crownie with Browny”. It’s a clever slogan for the Clubbers, who are looking forward to hosting Brisbane Lions triple premiership superstar Jonathan Brown. While the catchcry is mostly aimed at pulling in big numbers for what is sure to be an entertaining sportmans’ night, Clubbers coach Michael O’Keefe says Brown donning the whites at Hansen Reserve for his ladder-topping VTCA senior division side in the afternoon is no gimmick. “He was a very good cricketer when he was growing up,” he said. “He was a left-arm quick and he used to open the batting as well. He had the potential to play district cricket but he was always going to be drafted [to the AFL].” O’Keefe’s ties to Brown go back to their days knocking about as teenagers in Warrnambool. O’Keefe revealed that he approached Brown to play for Footscray Edgewater, but his AFL commitments have always prevented such a move. With Brown back living in Melbourne, the timing was right for him to make a guest appearance for Yarraville Club against Strathmore at Hansen Reserve this Saturday. “We’ll tack on a sportsmans’ night after it, which should make it a big day for the club.” Brown will train with his Yarraville Club teammates for the first time tomorrow night.
