NEWS + SPORT + THE WEST’S BEST PROPERTY GUIDE

Beaches cop dirty outflows Beachgoers are being urged not to swim near stormwater drains, even if it’s a beautiful day, after three western suburbs beaches recorded faecal pollution. Altona, Williamstown and Werribee South beaches were deemed unsafe for swimming for days following a one-in-100 year storm on December 29. Werribee South recorded the worst water quality of the three beaches this summer, and was deemed too risky for swimming 10 out of 31 days in December. Altona and Williamstown were rated as risky for six of these days. The EPA’s Dr Anthony Boxshall said the health risks were predominantly gastro attacks and infections from open cuts or other wounds. “Werribee South has probably been the lower performer of those three, and that’s because Werribee gets impacted by stormwater runoff more so than the other two, just because it’s a bigger waterway,” he said. “When we had that massive storm, it

just kind of picked up everything and washed everything off the streets and into the water, so pretty much all of the bay beaches at some point, we are pretty convinced, had poor water quality right at the height of that storm.” Dr Boxshall said the biggest risk was 28-48 hours after rainfall. “We’ve been doing this for 25 years and we know that for 24-48 hours after rain, our beaches are impacted and water quality is lower,” he said. “By about 48 hours, more than 95 per cent of the pathogen that we’re detecting has died off. “A bit over 80 per cent dies off in that first 24 hours,” he said. “We’ll be giving forecasts twice a day, and we’re out there sampling it once a week, or more if we see incidents, and we’ll keep reporting that information so people can make their own choices. “Even if it’s a nice day, we know it’s a good idea to avoid swimming at the end of a stormwater drain. “More broadly, we can be really aware of what’s happening on our streets – so pick up after your dogs. If you see a leaky portaloo, report it.”

Australia Day at Altona starts off with a bang as Altona Village Traders Association members celebrate a special 10-year anniversary. President Kim Walsh said this year’s celebrations would be the biggest ever. “We started off way back with our sand sculptures in the middle of Pier Street,” he said. “This year … will be bigger and better than all the previous ones.” Celebrations, centred around Altona beach, Logan Reserve and Pier Street, start at 11am and culminate in fireworks at 9.30pm. Highlights include a sand castle competition, horse-drawn carriages and camel rides on the beach. Celebrations kick off at Seaworks in Williamstown on Australia Day eve from 6-9.30pm with tall ship tours and fireworks at 9.15pm. The entertainment, including Enterprize sails, continues on Australia Day from 10am-4pm. Yarraville will host the third free Stony Creek Music Festival on Australia Day from 2p-7pm at McNish Reserve, Cruickshank Park, Yarraville. Goya Dmytryshchak

Heating and Cooling, Hot Water Services, and Fridges, are some of the biggest energy users in the typical Victorian home. Making small adjustments to the temperature of these items in the home, can make a big impact on your energy use and save dollars. Heating – set your thermostat between 18C and 20C degrees. Every degree above this will increase running costs by around 10%. Cooling – set your air conditioner thermostat to 24C and 26C degrees. Every degree lower will increase running costs by around 10%. Fridge – set your thermostat at 3C degrees for optimal cooling. Freezer – set your thermostat at -18C degrees for optimal freezing. Hot Water – you need a minimum of 60C degrees hot water storage and a temperature not exceeding 50C degrees at the water outlets.

Walkers warned of ‘menacing’ trail bike riders

Police are trying to identify these two trailbike riders, believed to be aged in their 30s. (Supplied)

Police are using trail bike patrols to try to catch two illegal riders who tried to run over a walker at Altona Meadows. Sergeant Stephen Bosnar said the riders had been seen around the Truganina Park area, off Queen Street in Altona Meadows. A walker managed to take a photo of two riders before jumping out of the way. “They shouldn’t be in that area to start with – it’s controlled by City West Water and the gates are all locked all the way around it, but it’s used by a lot of bird watchers and walkers, in particular.

“One of the walkers has taken a photo of them, which has antagonised them and then they’ve gone straight at him.” The riders, believed to be in their 30s, were last seen in AB Shaw Reserve off Hall Avenue at Altona Meadows. Police believe they live locally. “Their actions are becoming more and more menacing,” Sergeant Bosnar said. “Westgate Highway Patrol are … on trail bikes, and local police are also aware of the issues. “Penalties for riding in this area are as though they are riding on the road,” he said. “They are

still required to be licenced, and the bikes are required to be registered and in a roadworthy condition. “Trail bikes are only permitted to be used on designated roads,” Sergeant Bosnar said. Police are advising walkers to be mindful when using the area, and to stay away from the riders. Anyone who sees them is advised to call triple-0. Anyone with information is urged to call Sergeant Bosnar at Laverton police station on 9369 2122. Goya Dmytryshchak

Vandals with a beef By Goya Dmytryshchak People are rallying to support Footscray’s 8bit burger restaurant after its windows were smashed for the second time in a week in what some have speculated is a “class war” against hipsters and gentrification. Early on New Year’s Day, vandals scrawled “F... off hipster scum” on the front of the Droop Street store and smashed 16 windows, causing damage valued at $8000. About 2am last Saturday, a man and a woman smashed six windows, including the glass automatic door, with a rock. Police attended, but the pair had fled. 8bit co-owner Shayne McCallum said he believed the same pair were responsible for both attacks on his restaurant, but that he was at loss as to why. “I don’t even consider our business being hipster,” he said. “We just brought a food outlet to an area that didn’t have that type of food. “Why wouldn’t you want a burger place here? “I found out after all this that I don’t know the definition of a hipster. “In my mind, it’s kids in Smith Street wearing skinny jeans and big beards and hats that I wouldn’t wear.” He said the business would get roller shutters to prevent any more damage. On the flipside, Mr McCallum said the community had responded with an outpouring of support. “They’re like texting me, or people I don’t even know doing Facebook messenger, saying, ‘We visited the area, we love it, we’re coming for lunch just to support’ and ‘hopefully it will pay for the windows’,” he said. One woman posted on Facebook that people should be glad a multinational chain restaurant had not opened up. “Footscray’s face will change, that’s inevitable,” she said. “What its face will be is not going to be controlled by these violent halfwits. “Targeting local business is the dumbest thing I’ve seen all year.”

Taxi driver hurt in hit-run crash A taxi driver has been injured and another man taken to hospital under police guard after an alleged hit-run in Yarraville early last Friday morning. The taxi and a stolen car collided near a McDonald’s restaurant at the intersection of Somerville and Williamstown roads about 1am. The driver of the stolen car fled the scene on foot, while the taxi driver was trapped in his vehicle. A short time later an ambulance received a call-out to a nearby address. When police and paramedics showed up, they found someone matching the description of the alleged hit-run driver. The man, a 24-year-old from New South Wales, was taken to hospital under police guard with non-life threatening injuries. Police believe the car he was driving had been stolen during an aggravated burglary in Kennington, near Bendigo, two days earlier. The taxi driver had to be cut free by emergency services. He was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au Craig Butt/The Age

Councils feel rate squeeze

By Goya Dmytryshchak

Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councils claim they will struggle financially after the state government cut the cap on municipal rate rises to two per cent. Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Colleen Gates said last year’s 2.5 per cent rate rise cap had already shrunk forecast revenue by about $60 million over 10 years. “The cap of two per cent is even lower than our current plan, and will place further pressure on the ability of council to keep up,” she said. Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the rates cap, which correlates to the Consumer Price Index, would cut revenue by about $1.5 million. “Council will actively seek ways to … manage this loss,” he said. Cr Gates said the lower rate cap meant the council would have to reprioritise works to be completed in the 2017-18 financial year. “In the longer term, we will have limited capacity to fund the maintenance and protection of our 22 kilometres of foreshore from climate change, and our significant asset renewal needs,” she said. Local Government Minister Natalie Hutchins said before the government imposed the rate rise cap, council rates increased by an average six per cent a year. Municipal Association of Victoria interim president Cr Coral Ross said the rates cap came after decades of cost-shifting by state governments.

Dogs’ permit-to-play day Hobsons Bay’s annual dogs breakfast and microchipping day will be held at Altona’s Apex Park on Saturday. The council is offering $25 microchipping and free first-time dog registrations with proof that animals are microchipped and desexed. Victorian law requires cats and dogs to be microchipped as a condition of registration. Lost dogs that are registered and microchipped can be reunited directly with their owners from Hobsons Bay instead of being impounded at the Lost Dogs Home. Hobsons Bay’s corporate services director, Tammi Rose, said that between December 27 and January 4, 25 dogs were picked up. “Of these, 11 dogs were microchipped and were able to be returned directly to their

owners whilst 14 dogs were impounded,” she said. “Eight of the 14 impounded dogs have since been collected … the remaining six have yet to be claimed.” All dogs more than three months old must be registered, with registrations due each April. The fine for keeping an unregistered dog is $311. The breakfast is also a chance for dog owners to learn to be mindful of wildlife. Pet owners can enjoy a dog-friendly bird walk, flyball demonstration and entertainment. It’s from 8.30-11.30am at Apex Park, opposite Kooringal Golf Course. By Goya Dmytryshchak A Seddon family’s new year travel plans came to nought after the theft of their beloved hand-built caravan on Boxing Day. Andrew Steward said the “teardrop” caravan, which is modelled on a 1940s design and took about 200 hours to build, was towed from the front of their Bliston Street house between midnight and 6am on December 26. Mr Steward, together with his wife and their two daughters, had planned to leave for a family holiday that day.

“Our tradition is to leave Boxing Day and hit the road with no destination, only a direction,” he said. “Having built something like this, the hurt is much deeper … I’m not sure I have the energy to build another, certainly not the funds to purchase the equipment needed.” The uninsured caravan was fitted out with solar panels, LED lights, a stovetop and cooking equipment. It had the family’s personal belongings, surfboards, fishing equipment and diving gear aboard. “It was always packed, ready to go at a moment’s notice, being for pleasure or work

trips away,” Mr Steward said. “It was a nice feeling to be hooking the teardrop onto the car. “It was also a discussion starter, the catalyst of many camping friendships. “Thievery is pestiferous behaviour,” he said. “I’m not sure people who take possessions really think about how they would feel if such a possession was taken from them.” A reward is being offered for the return of the caravan and-or its contents. The registration number is V75 158. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Theft puts brake on family holiday

Footscray turns it on Footscray’s biggest street festival returns on Sunday to ring in the lunar new year. The East Meets West Lunar New Year Festival, a celebration of Vietnamese and other Asian cultures, features a parade, lion dancing, live music, food stalls and carnival rides. Thousands are expected to flock to Hopkins Street from 10am-10pm to welcome in the Year of the Rooster. This year’s festival’s theme, “Back to Footscray”, encourages people to experience the suburb’s shopping, public art and food. Festival co-ordinator Hai Pham said the event had grown from humble beginnings more than 20 years ago in to a massive multicultural celebration showcasing Footscray’s cultural diversity and harmony. “We now have strong participation from other Asian communities such as Chinese, Thai, Cambodian and Philippines,” he said. “In the last couple of years, other ethnic groups,

such as the African, community have also joined us for the celebration.” The festival will open with a flag-flying performance and culminate in a fireworks finale. Free parking will be provided at Footscray Market. Details: www.festivalcity.com.au or www.faba.org.au Goya Dmytryshchak

Midsumma sport the key to town By Goya Dmytryshchak A Melbourne Renegades’ Pride Harmony Day featuring family-friendly cricket that promotes inclusion will be held in Altona as part of GOWEST events for the Midsumma Festival. The day will be hosted by Melbourne Renegades, Cricket Victoria and Proud2Play, and is one of seven GOWEST events scheduled for Melbourne’s west between January 15 and February 4. James Lolicato, co-founder of the Proud2Play charity, said young people from

the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transexual, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) community were often excluded from sports. “We want to promote the diversity that Hobsons Bay has to offer and use sport as a tool for inclusion,” he said. “What we find is that 78 per cent of young LGBTI people feel that sport, and in particular PE (physical eduction), is not a safe environment for them. “This might be because of overt or subtle homophobia, or transphobia or biphobia, that they find in a PE class. “So, of course, if you’re in a safe environment,

such as school, and you go into PE class, and you’re hearing these things said in PE, you’re never going to get into sport at an older age because you just don’t feel comfortable.” The cricket day is on January 21 from 1-5pm at JK Grant Reserve in Sugargum Drive, Altona. Hobsons Bay councillor Tony Briffa, who was the world’s first intersex mayor, said it was the eighth year of Midsumma in the west. “Hobsons Bay is proud to continue its long-standing partnership with the GLBTIQ community and Melbourne’s western region

councils to host GOWEST,” Cr Briffa said. “This festival, which is now in its eighth year, is a celebration of diversity and culture, which brings the spirit of Midsumma to the western suburbs “This is an inclusive event with a program of activities to suit all ages and interests,” Cr Briffa said. Other events include an exhibition, live music, ghost tours, authors’ talks and storytelling. For more information, go online at www. hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au/gowest

Next gig: Opera de Lyon Williamstown opera singer Brenton Spiteri will depart for France this week to work with Opera de Lyon, the nation’s second-largest opera company. The 28-year-old tenor will be touring with the company, including two performances at the Royal Opera of Versailles, built in 1770. Born and raised in Altona Meadows, Spiteri joined a drama program at Altona City Theatre at age six and went on to star in six productions there. He also performed as a teenager at Williamstown Little Theatre. “It was probably the best playground I could have had as a child,” he said. “It’s where my passion for what I do really took shape and I started to think maybe it was something I wanted to do. “Living in this community has been a big part of what helped me develop as an artist because of the fact that I spent so much time

at the theatre as a child, and performing local and community theatre gave me a lot of confidence. It helped develop the skills that I have to use every day now as part of my job. “I was born here, my family have lived here since they arrived in the ’50s … they’re always at every performance.” In France, Spiteri will play a number of roles including the god Mercury in the early Italian opera, Coronation of Poppea. Spitera said opera was unique as an artform because the music could unearth so much about the characters. “The stories that we tell are often very simple or very heightened, and that’s because the main focus of this artform is exploring the emotions of the characters and their relationships through the music.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Enough! Road warrior calls a halt By Goya Dmytryshchak It was a fatal crash that sent shockwaves through the community. On October 24, 2016 a car driven by 15-year-old Newport boy Luke Lee crashed in West Sunshine, killing him and injuring his four passengers aged 13-17. One of them, 15-year-old Billie Lea Harris, of Doreen, wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was left facing 12 months of treatment. A crowdfunding page has been set up for her in a bid to raise $50,000. It’s teenagers like these that the Fit2Drive program is trying to reach and influence. Altona’s Leigh Hardinge is president of the Fit2Drive Foundation which holds peer-led workshops for year 11 students and other programs for people aged 16-25. The program started with 18 schools in 2000 and now has more than 150 participating. Mr Hardinge, an SES founding member who has seen the aftermathofhundredsofcrashes, said there was no judgement or scare tactics, just facts to get young people thinking about their choices. “A lot of people get wrapped up in the road toll,” he said. “The toll is a tragic situation, but people very very rarely talk about very serious injuries where people are either maimed or have acquired brain injury for the rest of their lives. “It’s terrible; you’re going to have to have carers for the rest of your life. “It must be an awful shock, particularly if they still have reasonable thoughts and mind function, but mechanically they’re locked in a wheelchair. “And these are the things we try to share. We don’t believe in traumatising youngsters as to what can be the end result.

Leigh Hardinge is president of a program to keep young people safe on the road. (Luke Hemer)

“We try to share with them scenarios that are based on fact.” Mr Hardinge said one of the biggest contributors to road trauma among young people was distraction. “Whether it be texting, whether it be mobile phone conversations, whether it be conversations within the car, with all the other

traffic and everything else that’s around the place, it’s an invitation for a tragic outcome,” he said. “We used to be all [focused] towards the young drivers, but it’s now road users. “We look at the road users as a whole … pedestrians, passengers or drivers. They all come under a regime of … you’ve got to be prepared to do the right thing,

be safe and think of your family and friends.” Fit2Drive has introduced a LegitiMATE Moves program for people aged 15-18 who have offended. “We’re not there to tell them about the rights and wrongs of what they’ve been doing: It’s just to give them some options to work with,” Mr Hardinge said.

MY PLACE Lions Club of Altona president Maurie Tanian is gearing up for a big Australia Day breakfast. The Williamstown resident speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

I was a country boy who grew up in Ballarat. My parents came from Warrnambool and Gellibrand, near Colac. I became a teacher and I taught in the country areas before coming to live in the west in 1980. What do you like about Williamstown? I have lived in Williamstown since 1982 and love it here. I particularly like the friendliness of the people and the olde-world, village atmosphere of this suburb. At the same time, I also like the fact that it is very close to all the sporting facilities like the MCG and close to the city for theatre and galleries. What would you change? I worry a bit about how Williamstown is slowly changing, with proposed high-rise developments and so many new flats and apartments replacing old, historic dwellings. I hope that our town planners will tread carefully and sensitively with their decisions, as we are the original settlement of Melbourne. Additionally, it would be a shame if we lose the RSL which is a local landmark and means a lot to local residents. What’s your favourite cafe and/or eatery? Wow! That’s a difficult question. There are so many excellent cafes in Williamstown, such as MezMez, Novel Kitchen and Parade

Deli & Fine Foods. However, my favourite restaurant would be Hellenic Hotel. Tell me about the Australia Day breakfast. As a member of the Lions Club of Altona, in 2000 I proposed that we conduct a one-off Australia Day breakfast for the local community. Can you believe that my wife, Anne, also a Lion, and I are now planning for our upcoming 17th consecutive Australia Day breakfast on January 26 at Williamstown Town Hall? We hope to have a bumper attendance. Over the years, we have had some great Australia Day ambassadors/speakers including Susan Alberti, Mike Brady, the late Joan Kirner and Fabian Dattner. What would people be surprised to know about you? Two things that many people might not know about me: I was a school principal at two schools in the western suburbs and I am still involved in relief teaching at Williamstown North. In 1996-97, at the Lions’ national convention in Adelaide, I was elected to the position of national chairman of the Lions Club of Australia. Lions Australia has approximately 30,000 members and are Australia’s largest community service club. The Australia Day breakfast, costing $30 per head, is at Williamstown Town Hall from 8.15am on Thursday, January 26. Bookings: 0409 413 230

Tips for scavenging for holiday Wi-Fi By Tracey Spicer, via Fairfax He explores the urban jungle – a 21st century warrior – seeking signs and signals. Taj Thompson thinks he’s Bear Grylls in Man v. Wild (without drinking his own urine. Yet). Instead of a scrotum full of maggots for sustenance, our son searches for something even more elusive: connectivity. On each odyssey, the 11-year-old wanders – iPod in palm, as a compass – until he sees the

symbol. “Mum, this cafe has Wi-Fi. Let’s have lunch here!” Families are accustomed to the dark arts of scavenging Wi-Fi, because it takes up so much of our travelling budget. Technology is an essential part of our lives: We want to stay in touch back home, remain entertained during the journey, and keep a record of our experiences. It’s easy to grab a travel pack from your local telco, but they’re extortionately expensive. “The best, and the one I use, is Vodafone,

which allows customers to make and receive calls, and use the data their plan entitles them to, for just $5 a day in more than 55 countries,” Stephen Fenech, the editor of TechGuide.com. au, says. But this isn’t the best option. Overseas, you’re better off buying a pre-paid SIM at your destination: More data for your money. (Of course, get your smartphone or tablet unlocked by your telco before hopping on the plane or ship.) “The advantage of having a SIM, especially

if you’re travelling as a family, is the ability to make the smartphone with the foreign SIM a hotspot, so the kids can use it to connect to the Internet,” Fenech says. “Instead of buying a SIM card for everyone, you buy one with a lot of data and share that connection.” Most places have free public Wi-Fi these days. But the strength of signal varies wildly. In one episode of Boy v. Wild, Taj crams into the corner of a corridor in a shopping centre, screaming, “I’ve got a signal!” He proceeds to –

Ten essential items every traveller should pack

both hands free to hold a cooking pot or a book ... or fight off bears.

1. A small, squashable day pack that you can fling in your luggage, essential for toting water bottles, tablet device or guidebook and a raincoat or folding umbrella and all the other odds and sods you need on day trips. Also handy as a spillover bag for the homeward journey if you shop too enthusiastically.

4. Quality earplugs are a must for those whose sleep is less than sound, and handy for blocking aircraft noise as well. My favourites are the soft, tapering, orange Howard Leight MAX1 Earplugs, available from Amazon. 5. Sarongs are the traveller’s best friend. Use one as nightwear, a standby beach towel, modest covering for temple visits or wrap one around a jumper to make a pillow.

2. Clothes dry quicker if they’re hung on a line rather than draped over a bathroom rail. I use a double-strand braided, elastic version with hooks at either end, which holds clothes tight without pegging.

8. Universal adapter plug. Some come with a USB charge port, which is a useful addition. Make sure the adapter plug has three holes for compatibility with all Australian 3-pin plugs – some do not.

6. The Swiss Army knife (right) is part of the standard kit for NASA astronauts, and no self-respecting traveller should be without one. From fingernails to dealing with wine corks to digging stones from yaks’ hooves, this is a complete toolkit in a pocket-size pack (just don’t leave it in your carry-on at the airport – it will likely be confiscated by security).

3. Slippery cobblestones and open drains lie in wait for the unwary after dark, which makes a torch a necessity. I use an UltraFire Cree LED torch which casts a big pool of light and also zooms down to a pinpoint, available from Amazon USA for US$6.15. In the wilds, a head torch is better since they leave

loudly – FaceTime his best friend. When travelling overseas for work, Stephen Fenech FaceTimes his family from Apple Stores, because “they have especially fast Wi-Fi”. “I just remember to carry a pair of earphones so I can hear them easily and they can hear me without me having to shout in the middle of the store/restaurant/cafe/airport lounge.” You can check your emails on the computers in Apple Stores, too. Remember this rule is for each family device: Turn off data roaming or you’ll be slugged with $3 a MB. That’s a costly Facebook post. Also, switch off location services and push notifications. We always carry a powerboard with four points. Then, you only need one international adaptor to connect to the wall. A portable battery is handy, if you’re on the move. You don’t have to send the children to scrounge for connectivity, like Bear Grylls seeking beetles on the rainforest floor. Search the urban jungle for a tech store instead: It’s infinitely more civilised. Read more: http://www.traveller.com.au/ travelling-with-children-on-the-hunt-for-freewifi-gr3cu1#ixzz4NVCgvoha

7. Whether it’s Alicante or Zing Zang Bar, rain or shine, you need a hat. Crushable, wide-brimmed and tight is the way to go, and if it sheds water so much the better. Mine is a wax cotton Watership Cape Flattery hat, which is incredible durable although not loss-proof (one left on a French bicycle, one on the back seat of a Burmese taxi).

“Goofy goes on holiday” snickers my spouse unkindly as I head for the airport, trailing snorkel and fins, or cleated cycling shoes, or possibly spiked walking poles. Every trip is different, and packing for every trip requires a curatorial approach. The travel kit for my next adventure might include sandals specially constructed for walking on reefs, a solar-powered battery charger for the one after that. Regardless of where my ticket says I’m going, at the nucleus of every trip is a time-tested cluster of items that sit in a box labelled “must ride”.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir goes behind the signs to discover the soul of Somalia The Racecourse Road strip – already happily packed with a plethora of food choices – is home to seven African eateries these days, all but one of them offering Somalian fare. Deli Afro is rather more restaurant-like than some of its near neighbours with their clubhouse vibes. Over several visits now, I have been welcomed, had food questions happily answered and generally had an all-round great time. And the food is tremendous, and very cheap. No matter what you order here, you will be served soup – one of the benchmarks of such places. The Deli Afro version is a veritable nectar of the gods. Unlike most, this has no vegetable pieces or strands of stock meat – it’s simply a lip-smackingly awesome, tangy, lemony, spicy broth. The other benchmark, for me, of such fine cafes is the rice. The rice that comes with my lamb ($15) is … perfect. Every grain glistens, with just the right amount of diced veg, onion and sultanas. With this kind of cooked-in-stock rice, one word automatically comes to my mind – inhale. The generous serve of lamb is very good, too, and I continue to be wowed how north-east African cooks do so much, albeit very simply, with humble barbecue chops. I am also provided a side plate of greens and stewed, finely diced beef, along with a zippy chilli sauce.

DELI AFRO RESTA EST URANT ESTA Address: 331 Racecourse Road, Kensington Phone: 9994 7229 The overcooked greens are the sort of thing I reckon warrant comparison with side dishes associated with the “soul food” of the US. On another visit to Deli Afro, it is CTS pal Marnes who goes the meat-and-rice route, while I happily explore another aspect of Somalian food – pasta. These noodles are so much fun, beaut to eat, especially with dosings of the chilli condiment. There’s minced beef involved, but it is a very dry dish – it’s like a dry, jumbly bolognese. I normally steer away from fish in humble but friendly ethnic cafes, fearing a serve of bony and/or trashy species, such as tilapia or basa. At Deli Afro, by contrast, I get a handsome chunk of salmon – also priced at $15 – with the pasta. It looks like it’s been blackened in the New Orleans tradition … it is way overcooked by the norms most of us associate with this fish, but not ruinously so. I enjoy it a lot. Our Friday night dinner gets the full Somalian treatment, we get a banana each to eat with our meal and then milky chai-style tea, so aromatic with ginger and other spices. OLD TREASURY BUILDING This Australia Day, take an exclusive tour of the Old Treasury Building. Discover the rare and little known paintings of Melbourne from the 1840s to the 1870s, on loan from the Roy Morgan Research Centre Collection. These paintings, watercolours and lithographs provide an insider’s glimpse of the early beginnings of colonial Melbourne and offer an insight into the life of Melbournians, from a swamp town to the opulence and wealth of the gold rush era. From paintings to photographs, visit the Melbourne Panorama, showcasing 150 years of the growth of Melbourne in a single display. Included in this exciting tour is the historic Executive Council Chamber, the office of the Governor of Victoria, since 1862. Cost: $8 per person | Time: 11am & 1pm | Date: 26 January, 2017

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs.

1180512-PB16-15

“My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says.

Dr. Tony Stubbs Eye Surgeon MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO

A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.

SPORT Club just keeps on giving By Lance Jenkinson Three members of Newport’s back-to-back state league premiership-winning team have been selected to represent Australia at the 2017 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in England this July. Goaltender Bree Hussey and outfielders Rachel Kirchheimer and Hayley Sofarnos got the Christmas present they desired with news of their inclusion in the national squad coming over the festive period. The star trio will be joined by former Newport player Stephanie McNamara in the green and gold. McNamara is playing college lacrosse for Louisville in the United States, but her ties to the Porters remain strong. Newport coach Stacey Morlang was ecstatic for the four Porters gaining higher honours because she has seen their commitment behind the scenes. “It’s amazing, really exciting for the club,” Morlang said. “They’re incredibly passionate and committed women who sacrifice a lot of things in their life to be able to be the best they can be and represent their country. “There’s a lot of talent and athleticism in there; it’s a whole package when you’re trying to make an Australian team or get a scholarship in the states. It’s mostly about mental toughness and motivating yourself when you’re training by yourself a lot of the time.” Newport has always been proactive in promoting its players for state and national selection. The Porters have a rich history of players stepping up to the next level then returning to the club to wreak havoc on the state league competition. “We’ve always had a heavy winning culture; it was set in place when the club started,” Morlang said. “And it’s driven by the many Australian players through our ranks. “We understand lacrosse isn’t everyone’s life, but we also like to foster their growth and inspire them to have goals, and we can help them reach them. We also have a really good committee and group of coaches that understand how to get the best out of their players and we expect them to reach their potential.” Kirchheimer is a long-time member of Newport but only recently committed to playing for Australia after playing at previous World Cups for her country of birth, England. Hussey converted from an outfield player to a goalie, a move that has paid massive dividends, while Sofarnos was one of the Porters’ top attackers last season, scoring three goals in the grand final win over Footscray.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The

west’s favourite son, Merv Hughes, is all over our television screens again – but this time, he is not immersed knee deep in spiders or animal excrement. He is fronting an advertising campaign for Coles supermarkets. Along with celebrity chef Curtis Stone, Merv is extolling the virtues of the chain’s meat. I have done many a sausage sizzle and barbecue with the great man over the years and I can vouch for his love and passion for steak and snags. If the Olympics held sausage eating as a sport, Merv would be a podium finisher every four years. Curtis Stone is a western suburbs boy, so he and Merv got on famously. Curtis played under-age footy for Kensington and made a WRFL representative side in his day.

■ Congratulations

to well-known local golf professional David Wren, who has completed a charity bike ride that has seen him travel from Ireland to Melbourne. “Wreny” embarked on his journey in May, 2012, the motivation being not just a sportsman’s will to push himself, but also to raise awareness and funds for the Dementia Foundation. David’s mother, Althea, lived with severe dementia for the last 10 years of her life, and seeing this caused David to review how he wanted to live his life. The ride took him across China, central Asia and to many other parts of the world in his trek of more than 20,000 kilometres. He reached the finish line last Sunday. David intends to return to golf and find a job in the industry in the coming weeks.

Newport’s Rachel Kirchheimer will represent Australia at the next world cup. (Luke Hemer)

Jarry is better known these days as father of Australian Opals star Rachel, but the Altona local received a fitting acknowledgement of his own sports prowess recently. Graham went to the MCG during the Boxing Day Test to receive Cricket Victoria’s Outstanding Volunteer Award. Graham has been involved with the Yarraville Cricket Club for more than 35 years, serving as a player, scorer, coach, administrator, secretary (15 years) and president (six years). He was also on the VSDCA executive for five years. Graham is typical of those selfless people who do it for the love of the club. Sport would be lost without them.

Whittington is no stranger to the Open, having enjoyed some memorable moments in the doubles, but this is a leap forward as a singles player. Bulldogs lose grip, top eight spot goes

Five-wicket star Hamish Winter-Irving was also active in the field. (Damjan Janevski)

There was a lot to like about Footscray Edgewater on Saturday, but it ultimately counted for nought. The Bulldogs went down by 34 runs to Northcote in a Premier Cricket cracker at the Merv Hughes Oval, tumbling out of the top eight in the process. Footscray Edgewater was facing a hefty one-day total of 9-255 to chase. Even amid the glut of runs conceded, the Bulldogs could be pleased with the bowling group on a stifling hot day. But they were downright thrilled with the performance of new ball operator Hamish Winter-Irving. Winter-Irving beat the heat to take 5-39 off a maximum 10 overs in his best bowling figures of the summer. Lucas Dredge, the Bulldogs’ leading wicket taker this season, took 2-57, which brought up his 20th wicket. However, no Bulldog bowlers could contain Northcote captain Steven Taylor,

who made 87 off 117 balls. Taylor had good help from opener Solomon Mire (64) and Josh Sundberg (50). If you said before the run chase that Footscray Edgewater star Dean Russ was going to make 108 at better than a run a ball, you almost would have taken the victory to the bank. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, Russ was largely a one-man band with the bat. A number of others got starts, but could not go on, including next best scorers Matthew Underwood and Dredge, who both made 23. With four straight losses, Footscray Edgewater needs to find a way out of its current slump. And it must start with the two-day game away to Essendon at Windy Hill, beginning on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson

SPORT

Cycling ace beats heat to extend record Saturday’s 19th round of the Footscray Cycling Club season saw riders brave the heat at Drake Boulevard in Altona. The day’s racing followed an uncomfortably hot night, and the rapidly rising temperature brought high rates of rider attrition. In A-grade, Footscray club champion Dom Dudkiewicz extended his unbeaten run to 28 races, with a breakaway that had the champion questioning the wisdom of a do-or-die move. “It was hot and windy and there was an early attack that I bridged across to a good five-man break early in the race, but after about 10 minutes I found myself on my own as riders pulled the pin,” Dudkiewicz said. “I didn’t think I’d stay away on my own in this heat. I didn’t know how far ahead I was, so I put my head down and upped the pace for a few laps. “With about 15 laps to go, I got a time check from a spectator who said I was 35 seconds up, and then I started suffering and fading, losing time. “I really thought I was done when I saw the bunch, but there were only four laps to go so I pushed on and got home.” Dudkiewicz crossed the line well clear of second-placed Matt Muscat, who was also solo and clear of the bunch, while Melbourne University’s Brent Woodlock took the bunch sprint and third place. The B-grade race was fast-paced and full of attacks. Brunswick’s Simon Troon defied the odds and kicked clear of a strong bunch, riding solo to the very end only to be caught and cruelly beaten by half a wheel by Thornbury’s Glen Grbesa. “A few guys who tried to get off the front at the start and maybe they burned themselves out a bit towards the end in the heat because, even though we got a bit of a change, the conditions were still pretty tough,” Grbesa said. Having put in a command solo performance, Troon hung on to second place as the bunch sprint engulfed him. In C-grade, Footscray’s Shane Doyle took the bunch sprint from Anthony Gercovich and John Mogavero, while in D-grade, St Kilda rider Adrian Koukoulas took the win from Coburg’s David Diviny and MCL’s Damian Bevilacqua. Mark Micallef

Williamstown veteran Craig Sheedy gets a delivery that kicks on him.

(Damjan Janevski)

Sheedy sets off Seagulls By Lance Jenkinson You run out of superlatives to describe the impact veteran all-rounder Craig Sheedy has over Williamstown. The Seagulls would likely not be perched on top of the sub-district cricket ladder had Sheedy not opted to come out of retirement in his 40s. “He’s so good,” Seagulls’ playing assistant coach Brent McMinn said. “He’s a massive part of our success this year. It’s not only his batting and bowling, it’s his experience as well. “Just having him around the team is priceless.” Like so many times before, Sheedy played the role of match-winner for Williamstown in Saturday’s 95-run mauling of arch-rivals Werribee at Williamstown Cricket Ground. Sheedy gave the Seagulls a shot in the arm with the bat, making a quickfire 56, including two fours and three sixes, to get them to a respectable 8-172 off the allotted 45 overs.

He then did the bulk of the damage with the ball, taking 4-9 off six tight overs, leaving Werribee in ruins, all out for just 77, in 28.3 overs. But, unlike seasons past, Williamstown is not as reliant on its veterans to win matches. Sheedy may be the base of this sweet cake, but there are many tiers and layers of icing on top. “We’ve got a lot of depth,” McMinn said. “A couple of young guys have stood up really well.” There can be no underselling the value of middle order batsmen Mitchell Streiff and Matthew Dervan. Streiff made a patient 27 in a 68-run stand with Sheedy. Dervan batted with the tail to make 30 not out and give the Seagulls a big enough score to defend on a flat wicket. Even number 10 Daniel Popa left his mark with 22 not out. It was the same with the ball and in the field, though – the work was shared by each and every Williamstown player. Bryce Preston’s 3-12 off 5.3 overs, including

two in the first over, set the tone. Popa capped a neat game with 2-20. It’s this kind of team work that has Williamstown on top of the sub-district ladder. “We’ve got a really good team balance at the moment,” McMinn said. “We have a lot of faith in each other … that’s what good teams do.” Williamstown will face sixth-placed Taylors Lakes in a mouth-watering, two-day game starting on Saturday at Lionheart Reserve. Meanwhile, Altona has further dented Yarraville’s finals chances with a comfortable 49-run win at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday. The A’s posted a commanding 7-213 off 45 overs after a 110-run opening partnership of Aaron Maynard (66) and David Kinsella (40). Yarraville was bowled out for 164 in 41 overs. Matthew Love was top-scorer (70), while Shannon Clarke did damage for the A’s with 4-19, taking his season’s wicket tally to 20. Fifth-placed Altona travel to Hoppers Crossing on Saturday; Yarraville visits Croydon.

Club shakes off party mood Yarraville Club has put patchy preChristmas form behind it to begin the new year with a win in VTCA seniors. The ladder-leading Clubbers went on the attack from the outset to record a comfortable 73-run win over Tullamarine at Walker Oval on Saturday. Spearheaded by an unbeaten 136 from Konrad Kurta, the Clubbers amassed 3-281 from their 40 overs. Kurta came in with the Clubbers on 1-16 and featured in significant partnerships with James Damjanovski (52) and Will Sheridan (51). Tullamarine didn’t give up without a fight but could manage only 8-208, with Sheridan taking 3-20 and Emmett Bronca 3-46. It was a reassuring win for Yarraville Club, which had lost three of its previous four games, all the while maintaining hold of top spot. Lance Jenkinson

ike Hyundai itself, the Tucson is all grown up. Called ix35 in the previous generation, the latest medium SUV from the South Korean car-maker has shed its adolescent awkwardness and knuckled down. Hyundai started by stretching the new Tucson in most dimensions to turn it into a true medium SUV, thus allowing roomy five-seat accommodation and handy 488-litre luggage space. The stylish new look came courtesy of its European designers, while Australian engineers tweaked the suspension and steering for a supple ride and reassuring control. Now armed with a choice of three four-cylinder engines and four specification levels, the Tucson spans a wide range. Our test vehicle was the flagship Czech-built all-wheel-drive Highlander – yes, most Tucson variants are now built there – powered by Hyundai’s renowned 2.0-litre diesel packing 136kW of power (more than most of its rivals) hooked up to a six-speed auto for sparkling acceleration.

etting back to where you belong – whether it’s heading home from a winter break, or heading out on workaday duties – feels pretty good in a Tucson. There’s a sense that you’re in safe hands within its sturdy body, with plenty of power, yet you feel comfortably in control, thanks to its responsive steering and clear, accessible driving instruments. The safety aspect goes up a notch with automatic emergency braking and rear-traffic alert, which warns you if a car or pedestrian is approaching as you back out of a driveway or parking spot. Safe, roomy and comfy, it is clearly all about the family, with big doors and boot space to fit kids and all their stuff. Despite a nice line in leather, which also elevates the price, the interior is somewhat uninspired. All the design effort has gone into the eye-catching exterior of curves flowing around elongated window and headlight shapes, with a handsome grille and subtle chrome underscoring.
