Beach thugs on notice By Goya Dmytryshchak Police have vowed to crack down on troublemakers at Altona beach after a pizza maker was attacked and brawls erupted over two warm nights last week. Sergeant Dave Arnold, who heads up the summer policing team, said police were trying to put a lid on antisocial behaviour of the type witnessed last week. “It does appear to be people outside the area,” he said. “I can confirm that there was a fight there on Monday night and a person was arrested and charged.” Star Weekly understands that a pizza-maker intervened after seeing a group of teenagers drinking and was struck on the back of the head
with a stick. A 15-year-old from Kurunjang has been charged with assault offences and bailed to appear in a Children’s Court in February. Sergeant Arnold confirmed that police backup was called in on Tuesday last week after brawls erupted at Logan Reserve. “There were a number of what I’ll call scuffles amongst groups,” he said. “As a result we put a very heavy police response into place … until the groups decided to leave. We won’t tolerate antisocial behaviour and will do everything in our powers to prevent breaches of the peace so that everyone can have an enjoyable and safe time at the beach this year.” Altona residents took to social media to voice their disgust at outsiders coming into their suburb and trashing it, with some calling
for a permanent police caravan or kiosk. Head of the Altona Village Traders Association Kim Walsh said a private security guard employed by businesses would be patrolling the streets. “They are out-of-towners … they just seem hell-bent on causing trouble with their antisocial behaviour. We don’t want those people in our town,” he said. “We’ve worked our bums off to make our town a safe and enjoyable place, and it’s very disheartening that you can only have one or two small incidents and it undoes all that good work.” Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Colleen Gates said the council was working closely with traders, police and the lifesaving club to ensure
the community’s expectations of safety and cleanliness were met. “If people behave sensibly, clean up after themselves and are respectful of others then everyone can enjoy our foreshore areas this summer,” she said. “Incidents of vandalism, theft or other crimes should be reported immediately to Victoria Police.” Fines of $200 will be issued to anyone caught with an open container at the beach or within an area bounded by Romawi and Bayview streets and Civic Parade. Lockers to store valuables are being installed at the Altona Lifesaving Club but are not expected to be ready until early next year. Police are urging people not to bring any valuables to the beach.

Eviction deadline looms By Goya Dmytryshchak Residents at Hobsons Bay Caravan Park in Williamstown North face an anxious Christmas not knowing where they will live next month. Resident Kevin Wright said people had until January 13 to move out due to the park’s redevelopment. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, rezoning of the land in Kororoit Creek Road has paved the way for three-storey residential development. Piccolo & Tedesco Pty Ltd plans to build 108 dwellings. The caravan park, established 39 years ago, had been home to about 190 people. More than 20 residents attended last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting to ask why the council had not financially helped them to relocate the cabins they own. The council responded that at no point had it agreed to compensation, and its community wellbeing team had been working with state agencies to help residents transition. Mr Wright said residents who owned their own cabins at the park paid $130 a week plus outgoings and would have difficulty finding similarly priced accommodation. Half Moon Caravan Park in Brooklyn closed down early this year and was sold for development. “We want to get a bit of funding just to move our buildings, but where we’re going to move at this stage we just don’t know,” Mr Wright said. “There’s not many caravan parks left now.” Director of community wellbeing Peter Hunt said the council was working with the Department of Health and Human Services and a number of community organisations to support some of the long term residents in finding new accommodation.

Council opts for rebuild over refit By Benjamin Millar The Church Street Children’s Centre in West Footscray faces an extended closure while Maribyrnong council develops plans to demolish and rebuild the centre. Star Weekly last month reported that a planned redevelopment, due to be completed by next month, had languished since mid-year after “a range of structural issues” were discovered by the builder early into the works. Maribyrnong council staff last week briefed councillors on the situation and Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the councillors wanted to see the centre entirely rebuilt.
“There will be a report coming to council early next year and we’re hoping it will give us some direction on this,” she said. “I don’t want to throw good money after bad. This gives us a great opportunity to relook at the site rather than try to do a fitout of a building that has structural problems.” Council chief executive Stephen Wall and community services director Clem Gillings have both blamed bad advice from the project architect and engineer for the project grinding to a halt, but Cr Cumming said that, in its bid to save money, the council had played a central part in the failure. “The council was not given the opportunity

to look at building a new centre. In hindsight, it should have been looked at at the same time,” she said. “Then you could have looked at the cost of building a whole new centre and made some decisions based on that.” Rebuilding the centre could push the completion date out by as much as two years, forcing families who use the service to continue using the Maribyrnong Community
Centre where they have been since July. Ms Gillings said council staff would continue to meet with the Church Street Centre management committee and staff on a regular basis and provide ongoing updates to all families using the service. Meanwhile, councillors last week voted to release a confidential report that was used to justify the permanent closure of Footscray’s Empire Street Early Learning Centre. Cr Sarah Carter said the release of the report provided transparency for families on the reasoning behind the decision, which was made behind closed doors in July.
Farmers get food relief Dairy farmers feeling the pinch after enduring one of the toughest years in their industry’s history will get a break at Christmas, thanks to a Yarraville-based food relief agency. Tough times have triggered a spike in demand for food relief by farmers, and Foodbank Victoria has stepped in to help keep food on the table for those hardest hit. About 40 volunteers from Ford have helped pack 10 tonnes of food into 1000 Christmas hampers, with enough food to feed a farming family of four for a week. The 10kg hampers were packed full of key kitchen staples and a Christmas treat, for a special delivery at a time of year demand for food relief traditionally rises by about 25 per cent. Foodbank Victoria chief executive Dave McNamara said demand for food aid by rural
communities has risen by more than 11 per cent in the past year. “Since the millennium drought, our farmers have experienced flood, high costs, drought, and now the dairy crisis,” he said. “It truly is a sad irony that those who feed our families are now the ones needing the support.” Mr McNamara said the stress of not being able to celebrate Christmas makes the daily struggle even harder. Out and about is the key By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona’s Ethel Muller, who celebrates her 100th birthday on Wednesday, credits her longevity to having been active in community life. Mrs Muller was born in a small farming town in South Australia, called Mallala, before moving to Victoria. “As soon as I was old enough, which was about 17 and a half, I went off nursing,” she said. “I trained then at the Melbourne hospital – I was there for four years – and then after that I went off and did midwifery, which was a separate course in those days. “When the war broke out, I joined the Army Nursing Service and I was there for about four and a quarter years.” Mrs Muller served at the 2/9 Army General Hospital on Morotai Island in the Pacific. Nurses were only allowed outside the hospital in groups of seven with seven armed escorts because of the danger. Mrs Muller’s red nursing cape from the war has been donated to the Altona Laverton Historical Society, of which she is a life member. After the war, she moved around Australia before getting married and having a son. She retired at 68 after about 50 years of nursing, and moved to Altona in 1981. “After my husband died, I decided I had to get involved in something so I joined the Friends of Altona Library and the Altona Laverton Historical Society,” Mrs Muller said. “They’ve been a saviour to me since Karl died. “I’ve made some lovely friends.” Mrs Muller, who lives independently, said she believed the most important thing for good health was mixing with other people. “You must communicate with others,” she said. “If you sit home and ponder about how

lonely you feel, it’s useless. So, get out and meet other people. “I found those groups to be the answer. “And, of course, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else but Altona, I think Altona’s tops.” Mrs Muller said she believed old people were an untapped source of information for
young people, and she wants to spark more communication between young and old. “The young folks could learn so much by talking to the old people … groups of young people visiting nursing homes – that’s a lovely idea.” Mrs Muller has one son, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Public input on new rail design Hobsons Bay council will form a liaison group to have input on the design of new interfaces between road and rail at Williamstown and Laverton. The Level Crossing Removal Authority is due to start public consultation early next year on the replacement of ground-level rail crossings at Ferguson Street and Aviation Road. Councillor Jonathon Marsden moved a motion at last week’s council meeting to convene a level crossing liaison group to enable the council and community to work together on the best new designs. “I think it’s up to us, effectively, in identifying the risks and opportunities for a community, rather than allowing an unelected body or bidder to go out to consult without allowing for democratic accountability,” he said. Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA) project director Tony Hedley welcomed the council’s involvement. “We want local councils to be closely involved in the removal of these level crossings – to contribute local knowledge, inform our strategic planning and help us identify local issues and opportunities,” he said. “LXRA has met with council officers and councillors regularly, and will continue to do so as planning for the project progresses. “There will also be many opportunities for the community to have their say,” Mr Hedley said. Little Saigon rises again By Benjamin Millar The Little Saigon market will rise from its ashes with its owners pledging a renaissance. Fire tore through the iconic Footscray market last Tuesday, destroying half the building and severely damaging the rest. Fire investigators have confirmed a fault in an electrical switchboard caused the blaze, estimated to have caused more than $12 million damage. Co-owner Loc Lam said a search was under way for a joint venture partner to rebuild the market, with apartments to go above. “We will rebuild 100 per cent. It takes time and we are going through the process and hope to rebuild something for the public,” Mr Lam said. A planning permit to redevelop Little Saigon was issued in 2012, with plans showing two buildings of up to 12 storeys, comprising 260 dwellings and the new market at ground level. Maribyrnong council infrastructure director Nigel Higgins said the permit had been extended twice and was due to expire on April 11 next year, if construction does not start by then. Mr Lam said the redevelopment had been frozen since it was approved because the supermarket holds a lease until April 2017. “We don’t need to wait now,” he said. “The market building will be similar in size, with the same concept. We are hoping many of the traders come back, but it might be a year or two.” Mr Lam said he feels “very sad” for the traders affected by the blaze, especially as it came at the busiest time of the year. “Some don’t have insurance or enough insurance,” he said. “The timing of this was not the best.

The Force Will Be Out in Strength Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise during the 2016 Christmas/New Year Holiday for 24 day from Friday 16 December 2016 to Sunday 8 January 2017 to reduce road trauma over this high risk period. Road Policing Advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said during this Road Policing Operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to Road Policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma being Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Mobile Phones, Fatigue and Seatbelts/Restraint Non Compliance. Police will be targeting drivers who attend the end of year work functions as it has been identified that there is a risk that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Motorists will see numerous Police units in marked and unmarked vehicles targeting our major arterial roads during this holiday period. Speed Cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to
play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Christmas/New Year Holiday. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.
along with computer equipment used in its back-to-school program. A fundraising lunch was held at Crown Casino on Friday and the CFMEU Victorian branch donated $10,000. Mr Twentyman said he has been touched by the outpouring of community support. “Adversity can sometimes turn into something positive,” he said.
SPEED KILLS!
Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Roadwise during the 2016 Christmas/New Year Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000
If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.
Benjamin Millar
DRIVING IS NOT A GAME!
Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.
Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.
Owners of the former Bradmill site have less than three months to begin building a new shopping centre and library on the site before their permit expires. Beijing-based developer Chang Sheng has entered a $172 million agreement for the 24-hectare Yarraville property in a joint-venture with local Chinese media businessman Tommy Jiang. Maribyrnong council director of infrastructure Nigel Higgins said a planning permit still existed for a $20 million shopping centre development, including a new library beneath apartments, a medical centre, restaurant, service station, two supermarkets and 30 shops – all of it on the north-east portion of the site at 341-351 Francis Street. “No construction has occurred yet on site and the planning permit will expire on February 28, 2017 if construction does not begin,” he said. Mitchell Asset Management managing director John Mitchell, who handled the land sale, said the new owners were considering their options.
Don’t make a Grave Mistake

RSL offered lifeline By Goya Dmytryshchak The Williamstown RSL sub-branch has been given an option by RSL Victoria of keeping the title of a house next to the club, which is closing due to a multimillion debt on January 3. Star Weekly has reported that the club’s trading arm has a $1.77 million debt, while the sub-branch owes a further $1.738 million. RSL Victoria chief operations officer Brian Cairns said the sub-branch must repay $1.77 million of its debt before it can re-establish an RSL.
The club involves three titles – the club itself, its carpark and the adjacent house on Melbourne Road. Last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting heard that plans by Grocon to build a five-storey, 69-dwelling apartment block, with a smaller RSL clubroom and retail on the ground floor, had been shelved because of a heritage overlay on the house. Williamstown RSL vice-president Rob Rowe said the option of keeping the house for use or sale gave the sub-branch some hope for the future.
“We’ve got a little bit of heart, a little flicker of a heartbeat there,” he said. “They’ve given us until January 13 to speak to our committee and make a decision. “We’ve got to sit down and make some deliberations about that, because if we keep the house [for a sub-branch] then that takes a fair chunk out of the money we might get back at the end. “We’ve got some really good hope … that we’re going to have a good outcome not only for our RSL but also for our community in general.”
From one dump a mountain grows Concerns have been raised about a growing mound of rubbish being dumped in Brooklyn. Altona North resident Geoff Mitchelmore said people had been dumping old furniture, white goods and other waste around the former OneSteel Recycling plant on Old Geelong Road. “People are dumping large amounts of rubbish, not only steel,” Mr Mitchelmore said. “They see the rubbish dumped there and they’re dumping it at that premises … so it’s becoming an eyesore and a health hazard.” Brimbank council city development director Stuart Menzies said a clean-up was under way. “The rubbish is being generated by OneSteel signage on the fence stating public scrap metal bin/drop off, which was intended as a designated drop-off point for the public to leave steel and other items, such as white goods. “The road reserve is owned by the Crown and in the care of Brimbank City Council.”
Nurses impose work bans Hobsons Bay council’s maternal, child health and immunisation nurses are taking protected industrial action as part of an enterprise bargaining dispute involving four unions. Star Weekly last month revealed Australian Services Union members had voted to implement 49 work bans, including 24-hour strikes, amid fears about job security and outsourcing. Last week, the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation said talks with council management had reached a stalemate. Federation state secretary Lisa Fitzpatrick said council nurses in Hobsons Bay were being paid up to 11 per cent less than in other municipalities. “Nurses only take action as a last resort and they’re extremely disappointed the council shows no understanding of the value of this critical primary health care service, nor does it recognise the nurses’ claims are modest and fair,” she said. “These nurses reduce and prevent serious, expensive health and social problems by providing parents, babies and their families with support.” The action affects 11 maternal and child health centres. A council spokesman said contingency plans were in place to ensure “there is no disruption to our services in Hobsons Bay”. “We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure there is little to no impact on the quality of our services.” Goya Dmytryshchak

FOOD REVIEW
STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir waxes lyrical about fabulous Footscray fare … TIWARI TEA HOUSE Address: 1/578 Barkly Street, West Footscray Phone: 8529 5960 expecting – and the flavours really hit the spot. We have two sets of crispy cutlets ($8.95 for two), served with dipping sauces of the tamarind and green chilli variety. The spinach-cheese cutlets are on the dull side … no such problem with the mixed vegetable varieties – they’re both stuffed with a mix that is colourful and tasty. Dahi puri ($7.95 for six) are close relatives of the more familiar pani puri. So closely related, I suspect, that I struggle to tell the difference, apart from the inclusion of yogurt – though there’s no doubt these sev-topped (crushed crispy noodles) flavour bombs are delicious! Aloo tiki chat ($8.95) is another big hit with all of us – we should’ve ordered double! Yes, more potato. Here, the spud rissoles appear to be even less seasoned, yet – nice surprise – have a semblance of chargrill flavour. They’re topped with a sticky jam/chutney, tomato, raw onion and more sev. These are very, very good. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

Count us among those who see the Indian food flowering in West Footscray as something quite fabulous – absolutely worth celebrating. We have our favourite food there, and favourite places, depending on our whim of the moment. One thing we do look for is a point of difference … and Tiwari Tea House has that in spades. While other Barkly Street eateries feature chaat – savoury Indian snack-type dishes – this place does nothing but … And the food is all vegetarian. Four of us get into the menu and come away happy … and perhaps even refreshed after eating snacky things so devoid of the heavy spicing and meatiness we often enjoy hereabouts. As the name makes clear, this place is also much about tea – so we go with that flow. Bennie and I have the masala chai ($9.95 for two), while our pals Julian and Christine have black ginger tea. It seems rather pricey for a couple of cups of chai. No matter – we enjoy all our food, and love some of it a lot. Big hits are our vada pavs ($6.95 each). Looking like tall, chubby burgers, these are bread buns stuffed with wonderful potato patties. The potato is heavily infused with turmeric, but otherwise mildly seasoned. That’s a lot of carbs, right? Yet the overall effect is much lighter than we may have been

SPORT Losses leave A’s reeling By Lance Jenkinson
■ I am sure among the many presents under Christmas trees in the west there is a large number of red, white and blue gifts following the Bulldogs’ premiership. One I saw this week that fits the bill is The Doggies Almanac. For the past decade, an annual publication has been The Footy Almanac, a collection of stories written by footy fans about their experiences during the season at a game and their unique reasons for supporting their team. This new book is exclusively Bulldogs with some great stories about the 2016 season but also wonderful tales of how and why some people came to follow the red, white and blue. We have all marvelled at the players’ stories of the season, whether it was Murphy’s knee, JJ’s hamstring, Dale’s back or Bevo’s hairstyle. This book is stories from the rank and file supporters and it adds another layer to the rich tapestry that was the 2016 Western Bulldogs’ year. You can get it from bookshops or online at almanac. com ■ Jonathon Brown was a fearsome footballer in his days, leading the Brisbane Lions, and as a youngster he was a more than handy cricketer. The Warrnambool boy is about to don the whites again, this time for the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Brown chose footy over cricket even after he was invited to be part of a Victorian under-17 team while playing club cricket in his home town. Three AFL premierships might say he made the right choice. Another ’bool boy Michael ‘Tocka’ O’Keefe is the Clubbers’ coach and a former Footscray district cricket run machine. The Brown and O’Keefe families have known each other for years. Brown will make his debut in a one-day match on Saturday, January 21, at Walker Reserve, West Footscray, when the Clubbers take on Strathmore.
Greg Sheehan shows alertness in the field for Altona on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)
Bulldog premiers in prime time position
Footscray will play its 2017 season opener on Good Friday next year. (Shawn Smits)
Footscray is the prime time darling of the VFL in 2017. The Bulldogs will play five night games, including three home games under lights at the Victoria University Whitten Oval. The season will begin on Good Friday for Footscray with the premiers hosting Box Hill Hawks in a midday matinee for the club’s supporters. The early start is to allow Bulldogs fans the chance to make a day of it with the Western Bulldogs playing against North Melbourne in the AFL at 4pm on the religious holiday. In a dream start to the season, Footscray will begin its premiership defence with six of their first eight games at home. One of those games will be an ‘away’ game against the Werribee Tigers, who must play away from their home ground Avalon Airport Oval due to a stadium redevelopment. While the Bulldogs will hardly leave the Whitten Oval in the first two months, it will
24 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 21, 2016
leave them with just two games at the venue in the final 10 rounds. However, one of the Bulldogs home games will be played at Etihad Stadium, against Werribee. It will be one of two AFL curtain-raisers at the venue for the Bulldogs, who also play there against Richmond in round four. Footscray will have to wait until round nine to meet Casey Scorpions in the grand final re-match at Casey Fields. Williamstown will begin its season on Easter Monday when it hosts the Scorpions in an opening round blockbuster at Burbank Oval. Williamstown will play a Friday night game against North Ballarat on May 12, the first game under lights at the re-developed Eureka Stadium, which will play host to AFL football next season. The Seagulls will re-ignite their local rivalry with Footscray at home on July 29. Lance Jenkinson
■ 2016 has again been a big sports year in the west, some would argue the biggest since 1954, and it’s hard to dispute that logic. I want to thank Chris Byrne and everyone at Westpoint Ford for their continuing support. Also to those who have emailed news and stories to me, thanks, and please keep them coming. Sport is a great leveller, and it mirrors life: full of highs and lows, which is why we love it and why I enjoy writing about it every week. Have a happy and safe Christmas and new year and I look forward to sharing more from the Doghouse in 2017.

Altona will get a chance to apply the brakes on its downturn in form in sub-district cricket. The A’s are looking forward to a much-needed mid-season break after losing three games in a row. It has been a feast or a famine for the A’s this season, who started the season on a four-game winning streak to be on top at one stage. The recent run of bad results has the A’s down in sixth spot and opened the door for a raid on their position in the top six. Altona lost its second consecutive game at home on Saturday, going down to Box Hill in a one-day upset by eight wickets at Grant Reserve. The A’s could only manage 6-187 off their 45 overs with David Kinsella leading the way with 65 from the top of the order. Box Hill, a side that had struggled to this point in the season, cruised to the target on the back of an unbeaten century from opener Paul Gloury (103 not out). Williamstown is all the rage in sub-district cricket. The Seagulls will go into the break sitting on top of the ladder after a stunning form reversal in the past three games. The Gulls overcame a stern test from Mount Waverley to win by 29 runs on the road at Mount Waverley Reserve. Yarraville had been looking like finals material in recent weeks, but they suffered a disappointing five-wicket loss to Noble Park, leaving them nine points outside the top six. The Eagles posted 6-201 with opener Matthew Love on-song with 77 and all-rounder Akshat Buch chipping in with 30 not out. Noble Park recovered from a shaky 5-90 to pass the target with nine balls to spare. In Premier Cricket, Footscray Edgewater and Ringwood shared the points after the match ended in a draw at Russell Lucas Oval. Footscray Edgewater, spearheaded by 46 from Travis Dean, put up 9-157 off 55 overs before declaring, leaving Ringwood 41 overs to get the runs. It was the Bulldogs who had the better chance of winning the game, taking 8-117 before the close of play. In the VTCA, Yarraville Club slumped to a rare heavy loss, smashed by Keilor to the tune of 191 runs. The Clubbers are still well placed in second spot heading into Christmas. Meanwhile, St Andrews games record holder Mick Gregory celebrated his 300th game for the club on Sunday. Gregory is the heart and soul of the Saints, both as a player and for his work around the Braybrook-based club.

SPORT
Medals honour teamwork By Lance Jenkinson Scouring the western suburbs to pinpoint the monthly recipient of the Don Deeble Rising Star award, the riches of young sporting talent in our own backyard quickly becomes apparent. Our sports people are lucky to have so many sporting choices available to them, so there is no gravitational pull to one over the other. Thus a variety of sports and skillsets are represented in the 2016 edition of this prestigious award. A common theme emerges in talking to the athletes; it’s that their own enthusiasm for the sport is matched by the support teams around them. The athletes appreciate the hours of work
that a coach dedicates to ensure they can perform to their optimum. The appreciation extends equally to the parent who draws the short straw in setting the alarm early for a morning training session or the friends who have pushed them in backyard battles over the years to instil a love of the game and become better players. This award is as much recognition for the people behind the scenes who allow the athletes to thrive as it is for their sporting achievements. There will be 10 finalists at the Deeble’s night of nights in January, but there can only be one winner. Which sport that person comes from is anyone’s guess. The Deeble selection committee will spend hours mulling over their decision.
For the finalists, there are only two sports with multiple nominees:, three from basketball – the most of all the sports – and two from athletics, a sprinter and a heptathlete. Football, cricket and hockey each have a young gun in the running, while the water sports will be represented in sailing and rowing. These young sports stars have gone beyond dominating their own patch of turf or water. They have gone on to represent Victoria and some have even pulled on the Australian shirt at international competitions. The Don Deeble Rising Star award is run by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club in conjunction with Star Weekly. Who do you think will be the 2016 winner? Jamieson Battistella is July’s nominee for the Don Debble award. (Damian Visentini)

Najvada George was spoilt for choice. A multi-sport talent, George had a tough decision to make: whether to pursue basketball or netball. She decided on basketball and it’s paid big dividends. The combo guard was selected to represent Victoria’s under-18s at the East Coast Challenge and national championships. She also donned the green and gold for Australia’s under-17s at the Oceania Games, helping her nation qualify for the world titles.

Louis Schofield (Sailing)
Daniel Venables (Football)
Louis Schofield represented Australia’s under-17s at the Cadet World Championships in England and was the event’s youngest skipper. The Williamstown resident graduated from the cadets’ division to the 29er class, with his next goal being to compete in the 49ers, an Olympic class. Schofield claimed gold with teammate Tom Alexander at the Victorian State Championships and they claimed a creditable seventh at the Sailing World Cup.
Recruiters were salivating over the abilities of Daniel Venables in his top-age year with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. He landed on the West Coast Eagles’ list as a first round selection at the AFL National Draft, having produced his best football for Vic Metro in the AFL U18 national titles. The Keilor product starred in a title-winning side, claiming All Australian honours and kicking a crucial match-winning goal in one of the games.

Charlotte Morris could have chosen to stay at home in Euroa but made the brave decision to leave and challenge herself at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy. She didn’t look back after making the move, claiming three gold medals and a silver at the Victorian Open Championships and then a gold at the School Sports Victoria regatta. Morris has taken her first step towards her long-term goal of competing internationally for Australia.
Cassidy Gould starred as a combo guard on Altona’s youth league team that won the premiership this season, her skillset returning averages of 12.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and two steals per game. Gould signed with the Melbourne Boomers development squad in the WNBL and joined the U19 Australian Gems training squad. Her coach, Randy Shanklin, says she will “trust the process” and let the experts assess what route her career will take.

Melvin Monleh (Athletics - sprints)
Matthew Watt (Cricket)
Liberian-born Melvin Monleh has glittered in gold this year, claiming top place on the podium in 100m and 200m at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships. That wasn’t enough for him, though. He was also a crucial part of Victoria’s winning 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m relay teams. Coach Steve Gaffney marvelled at how easily he beat some of the nation’s top under-15 sprinters. It’s landed Monleh a scholarship at the Maribyrnong Sports Academy.
When you have the ball thrown your way in the Werribee first XI at age 16, you know your career trajectory is upward. When you have an offer to move to Footscray Edgewater in Premier Cricket, you know the scouts are watching. When selected in the talent-laden Cricket Australia under-age side, you know you’re earmarked as a player with star potential. All signs are pointing to a big career for fast bowler Matthew Watt, who this season represented Victoria at under-15 and under-17 levels.

Maddison Rocci (Basketball)
Claudia Beamish (Hockey)
The western suburbs has been a production line of basketball talent in recent years, Dante Exum and Ben Simmons having made it all the way to the NBA. The newest player to make her mark is Maddison Rocci whose talents have taken her to Canberra and the Australian Institute of Sport basketball program. The point guard has excelled for Victoria at all age levels since the under-12s and is now representing Australia in under-19s.
At just 13, Claudia Beamish has shown maturity beyond her years to compile an impressive list of hockey accomplishments. A regular with Werribee’s women’s team, she matches up favourably against players more than twice her age. A stand-out season in the under-16s won her the Altona team’s best-and-fairest award. Beamish represented Victorian under-age teams in indoor and outdoor hockey, sharing in two gold medals.
