RSL club loses fight EXCLUSIVE By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown RSL Club will close as early as January, according to a well-placed source. In July, Star Weekly reported that Grocon had lodged an application with Hobsons Bay council for a five-storey, 69-dwelling development with a smaller RSL club and retail on the ground floor. The development comes with the club struggling to repay a $2.8 million debt. However, Star Weekly has been told that there are now plans to close the club altogether. Major General David McLachlan, the RSL state president, confirmed that RSL Victoria had been speaking to other parties about potential non-residential uses for the site.

A Williamstown man has collected more than 120 bags filled with essentials for women experiencing homelessness and family violence. Tim Reynolds said his business was a collection point for Share the Dignity’s ‘It’s in the bag’ Christmas campaign. Share the Dignity is a campaign that started last year after a call went out for sanitary items and other essentials. Mr Reynolds said he was amazed by the community’s support. “The whole campaign, which runs from November 19 until December 3, was to have people in the community donate bags, and inside the bag there are things that are essentials that women need,” he said. “I’m the local pick-up point for Williamstown, and I’ve been absolutely blown away by the community’s response. “I’m sitting on about 120 bags easily.” The bags will be distributed to women’s refuges and drop-in centres for homeless women in time for Christmas.

Mr McLachlan confirmed there may have been an offer from a football club to purchase the property. “There are a couple involved and that’s commercial-in-confidence at this point in time,” he said. “There is concern about the future of the sub-branch as an entity and we’re working through all the options. There are no final decisions made in regard to what will happen there.” He said head office was handling the club’s debt. “The club continues to be underwritten by the state branch at the moment.” Asked what would happen if Williamstown RSL closed, Mr McLachlan said those matters were confidential. “It may just close and we take the role of the sub-branch into another sub-branch, but they’re matters which are still being negotiated and they’re in-camera at the moment,” he said. Williamstown RSL president Bruce O’Brien said the club premises on the corner of Ferguson Street and Melbourne Road had been gifted to WWI servicemen in 1919 by the then local Red Cross Society. “It was formed for welfare and to keep the memory going,” he said. “If it’s gone it’s bloody gone. It’s sad. It would break my heart. “I had a dad and two uncles who went away; one uncle didn’t come back. “To me, this whole thing is just heartwrenching. That land was gifted to the returned soldiers. How can some other bastard just sell it from under us.”

City braces for strike action It was a sea of high-visibility vests outside the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre last week as members of the Australian Services Union voted unanimously to take industrial action. Council workers could implement any or all of 49 possible industrial actions, including 24-hour strikes. Others include work bans on mowing parks, filling potholes, issuing parking fines, cleaning up street rubbish, collecting rates or processing building permits. Union members met outside the council chambers in Altona at lunchtime last Wednesday.
Addressing the meeting, Australian Services Union branch co-ordinator Billy King said workers were demanding greater job security amid fears of the council contracting out services. “Jobs like outdoor work, parks and gardens and the like, home care, planning, all of those sort of things in the future can be up for grabs,” Mr King said. He told the members that work bans would be widespread to avoid anyone being targeted. “We’re not going to put individuals or individual work groups in a position where they can be attacked. “This is a last resort for us. We’ve had the
ability to do this for a month now and we haven’t done it.” Mr King said the union had written to councillors seeking a meeting. “What people need to understand is that seven times in writing I’ve requested a meeting with your CEO to try and work this matter out and as recently as last week I got an email back from a director saying that if I want to talk to anyone I have to talk to their lawyer.” A council spokesman said: “The council has put plans in place to ensure that if protected industrial action is taken by some ASU members, there will be minimal impact on our service levels to the community.”
Storm lands boys in troubled waters Williamstown lifesavers and a boy they rescued have reunited to warn others of the dangers of fast-changing weather conditions when swimming at the beach. It came as Emergency Services Minister James Merlino launched Water Safety Week and the results of this year’s Victorian Drowning Report, which showed 43 drownings statewide over the past year. Mr Merlino said, from next year, all Victorian primary school students must be taught swimming as part of the curriculum. Altona Meadows teenager John Mastos said he and his mate, Jordan, were at Williamstown beach on Monday of last week when the weather turned “just like that”. John said he and Jordan had swum out to what’s known as a ‘no-boating buoy’, about 100 metres from shore. “It was very sunny … the same as it was all day,” he said. “Then all of a sudden, Jordan just goes to me, look there’s a storm coming, and as soon as he said that the storm hit. “I was just hanging onto the buoy … I realised I was in a little bit in trouble. “I tried to swim back and then I thought to myself, I’m gonna drown, I can’t do it.” Damien Bull said he and fellow lifesavers Josh Charlesworth and Paul Sullivan had just finished training the Nippers or juniors when they saw the pair in trouble. “So, I … grabbed a board and headed straight for the beach and then Josh followed me with another board, and Paul had already taken off … and was swimming out there.” John said the lesson he learned was to check the weather beforehand and to “look back”. “When the storm hit, we looked back and [realised] everyone was out of the water.”

New deal for Bradmill site The stalled redevelopment of prime Yarraville land may be back on track with a Chinese developer behind a $172 million deal for the former Bradmill site. Beijing-based development group Changsheng has bought the 21-hectare property from Colin De Lutis’ De Group in a joint-venture struck with local Chinese media businessman Tommy Jiang, who initially agreed to buy the site last year for $160 million. The $2.2 billion Yarraville Gardens redevelopment has a master plan by Peddle Thorp Architects for 1500 dwellings in a mix of townhouse and apartment buildings, however it was advertised as having “special capacity to substantially increase density”. Mr De Lutis paid $7 million to take over the ailing Bradmill denim business when it went into receivership in 2002, and later paid $16 million for two neighbouring blocks. The area was rezoned in 2011 from industrial to residential and mixed-use. The land purchase marks Changsheng’s first foray into the Australian market. The group is best known for developing landmark mixed use commercial and residential buildings in Guangzhou and Beijing in China’s south. De Group has retained the north-east portion of the site for a $20 million development that will include a medical centre, restaurant, service station, two supermarkets, 30 shops and an 800 square-metre library beneath apartments to replace the existing Yarraville library on Wembley Street.

Altona Meadows boy Alex Gatt is among those who will benefit when Altona and Williamstown beaches become wheelchairaccessible. Following a successful trial last summer, Hobsons Bay council will this week roll out beach matting for wheelchairs and provide beach wheelchairs for use on the sand and in the water. The move coincides with the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3. Williamstown and Altona beaches are expected to be fully accessible year-round by 2020. Alex, 13, was diagnosed with the genetic condition spinal muscular atrophy at age two. The degenerative neuromuscular disease causes weak muscles and poor respiratory function, and it confined Alex to a wheelchair.

The year 7 student at Altona P-9 College said that last summer he played on Altona beach for the first time when the council trialled a Sandcruiser all-terrain wheelchair. “At the beach, without the wheelchair and mat, there’s not much I can do, so I really like it, [the Sandcruiser]” Alex said. His mother, Lina Gatt, said that last year Alex had a ball playing in the sand with his younger brother for the first time. The pair welcomed news that a full-size change table and hoist would be installed at Bayfit Leisure Centre in Altona North in January. This will benefit those who previously had to return home to use the toilet or be put in a dangerous and unhygienic situation.

No safety risk from refinery leak By Goya Dmytryshchak Mobil says it will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of a leak from its Altona refinery early Thursday morning. About 30 firefighters and Hazmat crews wearing breathing apparatus attended the Millers Road plant after security reported a leak about 3am. Parts of Millers and Kororoit
Creek roads were blocked off for public safety. Melbourne Fire Brigade spokesman Steve Moore said the leak was found to be a mixture of hydrogen and naptha, a flammable liquid hydrocarbon. “Specialist Hazmat crews responded and advice was sought from the MFB scientific officer,” he said. Mr Moore said crews were unable to isolate the leak for several hours.
He said Mobil crews replaced the contents of the leaking pipe with an inert gas – nitrogen – allowing the leak to be sealed. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sprayed the area with water to disperse the leaking fuel and the air was monitored for several hours. Mobil spokeswoman Melanie Saliba said the cause of the leak would be investigated. “Mobil quickly responded to safely contain
the onsite release and is currently preparing the affected unit for repair,” she said. “The MFB was notified and promptly attended to assist Mobil in responding to this incident. “We will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the release, and we apologise for any inconvenience or concern that this incident may have caused our neighbours.”
Toey bowlers on a mission Altona Bowling Club is hosting a charity barefoot bowls day in honour of John “Keith” Courtney, a member who died last year from motor neurone disease. Board member Reece Leunig said he and chairman Neal Pattie grew up with Mr Courtney. “We saw how debilitating the disease was,” he said. “It’s 12 months since he passed. Given all the publicity with what Neale Daniher has done for a cure for MND, we thought this was a way to celebrate John’s life and the anniversary of his death … we thought we’d oganise an event and raise some money.” The barefoot bowls runs from noon until late on December 4 and will feature bands all day, a barbecue and silent auctions. Profits will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association of Victoria, which helps sufferers with care and equipment. Inquiries: 9398 1407.
Staff member David Foley will take part in the fundraiser. (Dennis Manktelow)

Hospital crisis response lauded By Benjamin Millar An unprecedented influx of patients stretched inner-west hospitals to breaking point last week as thunderstorm asthma victims inundated emergency departments. More than 1200 patients passed through emergency at Footscray and Sunshine over a 48-hour period after Monday night’s sudden weather change triggered respiratory problems in people across the city. Six deaths have been linked to the thunderstorm asthma event. They include Hope Carnevali, 20, who died on the front lawn of
her family’s Werribee home. More than 8500 people were hospitalised and Ambulance Victoria was flooded with more than 1800 calls – more than six times its usual daily workload – after the storm hit Melbourne. Western Health’s executive director of operations, Russell Harrison, said that at 1am on Tuesday 231 patients were in the Footscray and Sunshine emergency departments, while 18 ambulances were banked up at Sunshine. “We started to have an increase in presentation from about 8pm,” Mr Harrison said. “Around 9pm it started to become clear that this was a massive event across every
hospital in the city.” He said emergency department doctors could recall no event like it. He praised the patience of those seeking care and the response of Footscray Hospital staff for being “incredibly inventive” as they swung their emergency plans into action. “It was certainly a challenge. A lot of our staff stayed on after their shifts and we had doctors coming in and senior managers on site to co-ordinate.” Mr Harrison said a number of areas in the hospital were quickly converted into emergency triage spaces to help ambulances get back on
the road and ensure those most in need were receiving rapid treatment. Western Health has been pushing for redevelopment of Footscray’s decrepit emergency department, including a doubling of beds to almost 60. Mr Harrison said even if the redevelopment had taken place, the magnitude of Monday night’s crisis would have overwhelmed the department. State Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the Inspector-General of Emergency Management would conduct an inquiry into the resourcing and co-ordination of emergency services during the health emergency.
Friends bring bush back “It brings the bush into the city, into an area that is not well-treed, and it makes a really long corridor of bush … a number of kilometres have been turned from barren to bushland. “It’s brought back birdlife and there’s a confirmed sighting of a wallaby living down there, which I think is amazing so close to the city,” Mr Hogan said. “It there’s one, I assume there’s more. They’re a family sort of animal.” Melbourne Water’s Gavan O’Neill said healthy waterways help make Melbourne one of the world’s most liveable cities. “Just a few decades ago, many of Melbourne’s rivers and creeks were highly degraded,” he said. “Much of the transformation we see today is due to the success of the partnerships we have forged with schools, the community, councils and landowners.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek has been recognised by Melbourne Water for its efforts to “bring the bush into the city” at Altona North. It received best community group award in recognition of its transformative efforts along the creek banks over the past 15 years. Native animals, including birds and frogs, are returning to the area thanks to the improved habitat, and the creek had been restored from an industrial drain to a green, wildlife corridor, Melbourne Water said. More than 230 community groups are part of Melbourne Water’s river health program. Friends vice president Simon Hogan said the group had rejuvenated a barren area into a long stretch of native bushland. “It recognises our efforts along the creek and, I suppose, the extent of it, having 50,000 plants put in along the creek,” he said.

Fear stalks night-time walkers By Goya Dmytryshchak Nearly half of Maribyrnong’s residents and 39 per cent of those in Hobsons Bay don’t feel safe walking alone in their neighbourhoods after dark. The latest VicHealth survey shows 46.5 per cent of Maribyrnong residents feel unsafe walking alone at night, which is close to the state average of 44.9 per cent, while four out of 10 Hobsons Bay residents feel unsafe after dark.
The VicHealth Indicators Survey, based on telephone interviews with about 300 random people in each council area, is done every four years to measure individual and community wellbeing. Maribyrnong residents rated their overall feeling of wellbeing at 75.1 out of a 100, and Hobsons Bay residents at 76.6, compared with the state average of 77.3. In Hobsons Bay, 73.4 per cent of those surveyed said people in their neighbourhood
Three out of 10 agreed that getting drunk every now and then was okay, a similar result to the Victorian average. About one in five did no physical activity, similar to the Victorian average, and walking and cycling were the most popular non-organised physical activities in both areas. People in both areas ate close to 2.5 serves of vegetables and just over two serves of fruit, and drank five or more glasses of water a day. This was also similar to the Victorian average.
could be trusted, compared with 67 per cent in Maribyrnong and 71.9 per cent statewide. Both municipalities recorded very similar results in some areas. About six out of 10 felt they lived in a close-knit community. About three in 10 residents were at risk of short-term harm from alcohol, meaning they drank five or more drinks in one sitting. One in 10 was at very high risk of short-term harm, saying they had 11 or more drinks on a single occasion each month.
More than just a shelter Women who are left homeless by family violence or mental illness have been thrown a lifeline in Footscray with the opening of McAuley House. McAuley Community Services for Women chief executive Jocelyn Bignold says McAuley House, officially opening today, will provide a safe space for women who have experienced family violence and/or mental illness. “We all deserve decent homes and supportive environments. We have a transformational building which we hope will stimulate change in the lives of those who live here,” she said. “Ultimately, McAuley House is designed to foster a spirit of harmony and security, empowering women to achieve independence.” Victoria’s first purpose-built accommodation and support hub for women who are homeless includes 25 individual en suite rooms, common meeting and recreational areas and a purpose-built medical room.
The new building also features artwork by renowned street artists including Alice Pasquini and Footscray’s Baby Guerrilla. Ms Bignold says McAuley House’s mix of personal and communal space will allow women to recover from the impact of family violence and homelessness. The $11 million project was funded with $7 million from the Sisters of Mercy and $4 million from the state government. In addition to accommodation, the hub will provide education, employment, health, social and recreation programs. Benjamin Millar

Tracker finds west in poor shape By Benjamin Millar A new online tool paints a troubling picture of the health issues in Melbourne’s inner-west. Australia’s Health Tracker by Area, developed by Victoria University in conjunction with the Public Health Information and Development Unit at Torrens University, was launched last week, and provides localised data on chronic diseases and their risk factors. The tracker provides details of obesity, high blood pressure, cancer screening, early deaths by chronic disease and suicide rates. VU professor Maximilian de Courten said the data shows wealthier post codes are healthier post codes. “There is a social gradient when it comes to Australia’s biggest killers,” he said. The health tracker shows Altona North has the inner-west’s highest rate of obesity at 30 per cent, and greatest rate of overweight or obese people, at 65 per cent. Altona North also has the highest rate of early deaths from cancer at 164 per 100,000, and cardiovascular disease at 103 per 100,000. Footscray, West Footscray and Braybrook have the highest rate of early deaths from respiratory diseases at 27 per 100,000, and highest blood pressure at 36 per cent. Braybrook’s diabetes rate is the west’s highest at 6 per 100, and early death by diabetes rate the highest at 16 per 100,000 Laverton has the highest rate of smoking at 24 per cent, almost double the 12.8 per cent national average. Newport and Williamstown people more than 15 years old are most likely to be drinking at ‘risky’ levels, at 19 per cent. Altona has the highest number of deaths by suicide at 15 per 100,000.
Biker builds past and fast It’s official. Altona North’s Garth Francis is Australia’s fastest man on two wheels atop his hand-built replica vintage motorcycle. He came first in his category at this month’s Australian Historic Road Racing Championship held at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania. He and his brother, Ryan, travel the country to race their motorbikes, which are built at their Williamstown North steel fabrication and engineering workshop. Garth took first place in the unlimited classic class, riding a replica of a pre-1962 Manx Norton British racing motorbike. “They are all parts that are made to replicate the era of pre-1962, which classifies them as a classic bike,” he said. “The unlimited class is from 501cc and above. “It’s a Manx Norton racing frame with an Atlas engine. “We have a top speed on the bike of about 200 kilometres an hour.” Having raced motorbikes since he was a little boy, Garth said riding fast still gives him a rush. “Then you have a good calibre of riders, so you have to be on your game to try and beat them,” he said. “It’s a good adrenaline rush every time you go out there.” Goya Dmytryshchak

VicTrack moves on station land By Benjamin Millar Developers are being courted to renew a prime slice of inner-west land at West Footscray station. The 5000-square-metre site between Cross Street and the railway line, opposite Whitten Oval, was earmarked for redevelopment by the former state government in 2014. The land’s owner, VicTrack, is now seeking expressions of interest and inviting community input on potential future uses for the site, which
is likely to house multi-storey apartments above small retail spaces. The site was one of 10 Melbourne railway station sites identified for sale in 2014. It is currently occupied by the Western Emergency Relief Network, a Rotary-backed charity that helps trauma victims recovering from events such as fires and floods. The redevelopment will not be affected by the construction of a third platform at the station for terminating peak-hour trains as part of the Melbourne Metro project.
‘‘
Now we’re looking to make the most of the land - Marsha Thomson around it
’’
Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said redeveloping the site could breathe new life into the precinct and attract more people to the area. “West Footscray station was completely rebuilt as part of Labor’s Regional Rail Link
Project, and now we’re looking to make the most of the land around it,” she said. VicTrack has flagged the possibility of some of the development proceeds being used to make improvements at Tottenham station. Expressions of interest to tender for the project close on December 15. A community information session will be held from 4-7pm on Monday, December 12, at the VFL Meeting Room, Whitten Oval. Feedback can be provided at victrack.com.au/ westfootscraystationprecinct.
Little things … grow big Art for the young and young at heart has found a new home in Footscray. New gallery – called ‘little … No BIG’ – is the brainchild of artist Annee Miron, who describes it as “a little gallery with big ideas”. “Our goal is to showcase contemporary art that engages children, and builds their capacity to explore, discuss and analyse visual culture,” she said. A new artwork will be displayed each month in a window box gallery, accompanied by a take-home information card with prompter questions. The first exhibition selected for the space is Journey, a pop-up book created by artist Anne Journey Kucera. “I’m a visual artist primarily working with paper, I have been making paper artwork for the last five or six years,” Kucera said. She creates each work by hand, weaving dream-like imagery into surreal landscapes. “It’s creatively challenging, but satisfying as
well. I don’t gear them towards kids, but I know kids and adults alike find them fascinating.” Kucera said people may think of pop-up books as a relic of childhood, but they have a rich history, and are much-loved by readers of all ages. “Our generation may think of them as being for children, but they have actually been around in astronomy and anatomy and theology for a long time.” Kucera said she loves the idea of a gallery aimed at children and is honoured to be the first exhibiting artist at little … No BIG. The gallery is located on Level 1, 119 Hopkins Street, Footscray, also home to the Trocadero Art Space, Five Walls, 5x5 and Arcade galleries. Exclusively Family Law Golfer with golden swing A junior golfer had two big reasons to celebrate last weekend after recording her best score and clinching her first senior tournament. Lauren Goddard, 13, had a golden day out on the fairways, claiming the ladies division of the Sunshine Golf Club championship from women more than four times her age, carding a personal best 78 on the final 18 of the three-weekend competition. Lauren, who also took out the junior title of the event, opened with an 85 in windy conditions, before shooting an 83 and 78 over the final two days of play. “I was pretty happy with myself, and my parents were proud,” she said. The Maribyrnong Sports Academy student also recently made Golf Victoria’s junior development squad and was awarded a Metropolitan Golf Club scholarship. Lauren first got a taste for golf five years ago
when she followed her father down to Sunshine Golf Club’s driving range to give the game a go. “I had a go, and ever since then, I’ve been right into it,” she said. Lauren, who has a handicap of six, says she can feel her strength building with every round. “My long game at the moment [is going well], I’m hitting further and further every time,” she says. “I’d like to go professional, get my handicap down to zero.” She’s currently under the tutelage of 2008-09 Victorian PGA coach of the year Stuart Leong. “He’s really helped with all the technical work he’s given me about my swing,” she said. His tips have paid off so far, with Lauren winning several junior tournaments in Portarlington last year. Ben Cameron

From the outside, this townhouse is streamlined and modern – a combination of steel and glass giving it a semi-industrial vibe. The look is well served by the warm tones of the timber front door, and once inside the modern styling continues. the interior contemporary and bright. New owners will appreciate the variety of living spaces spread across the two levels. The separate lounge room at the front is cosy yet still spacious enough to entertain a small group of guests. Honey-coloured timber floors sweep through the ground level and pair nicely with the timber cabinetry, doors and benches found throughout. The open-plan kitchen, dining and family area is at the rear, all done up with
the same sophisticated design as seen throughout. The timber panelling in the kitchen’s island bench is an eye-catching point of difference in a room which showcases a sleek combination of glass splashback and chrome handles. There’s ample work and storage room here, a gas cooktop, underbench oven and dishwasher inset. Even the staircase reinforces the townhouse’s clear design – with a frameless glass balustrade and open-tread stairwell.

The upstairs bedrooms have plush-grey carpet underfoot, each is fitted with walk-in wardrobes, and have show-stopping en suites. Floor-to-ceiling, grey-washed tiles, floating vanity units and frameless glass, walk-in showers with rainwater showerhead give the en suites a hotel-like vibe. The large laundry offers access to one of two timber decks – the rear alfresco big enough for a couple of sun lounges. Eleanor Tabone

45 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 30, 2016
FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir’s cup runneth over with this homegrown find … Normally I’d flee a cafe that has crystals on display like a vampire does garlic. But I have it on the good authority of an astute local judge that Page of Cups is the real deal, with an emphasis on in-house, simple quality, even to the extent of baking its own croissants. So Marnes, Bennie and I give it a go. Page of Cups is a comfy place, with those crystals joined by various bits and pieces (including lovely hand-made boots) and recycled furniture, teaspoons and crockery that all contribute to the vibe. The breakfast menu is longish, and Marnes heads in that direction. The lunch offerings, less formally organised, are outlined for us via the obliging staff, the display cabinet, and the sandwich board outside. That’s where Bennie and I head. Marnes is happy with her Turkish bread stuffed with bacon, pesto, spinach, parmesan and a poached egg ($15), noting with approval wonderfully present pesto flavours. This isn’t really a burger kind of place, so we’re unsurprised Bennie’s brioche burger ($13) arrives without chips. No matter – a handful of glossy, juicy mushies are every bit as enjoyable. The burger looks pretty darn ugly on the plate, but Bennie enjoys it nonetheless. The beef patty has all the hallmarks of in-house preparation, along with fine, beefy flavour and a pleasantly chewy texture.
PAGE OF CUPS Address: 336 Melbourne Road, Newport Phone: 0421 940 141 My chicken and leak pie looks on the modest side in terms of size, for $16.50, but eats well – and is bigger than it looks – the finely diced innards being good and tasty. The accompanying salad bits are fresh, while the spicy and fruity (peach? apricot?) chutney is a knock-out. If our lunches/brunches have been solidly enjoyable, it’s our sweeties that seem to truly illustrate the Page of Cups’ hand-on, home-made ethos. Marnes and I both enjoy slices of toasted banana bread ($5.50) slathered with butter. The loaf is both kinda plain and many kinds of wonderful, with hefty quotients of coconut and dried fruit. Bennie digs his chocolate mud cake ($6.50) – no explanation needed. Our drinks – soy latte ($4.50), cafe latte ($4) and large iced chocolate ($5) – are all fine. I like it that Page of Cups has such a different feel from the west’s many hipster cafes, as enjoyable as they can often be.

SPORT Rookie draft makes and breaks dreams It was the last chance for this year’s crop of AFL draft hopefuls at Monday’s rookie selection meeting. There was joy for some, but heartbreak for most, with limited spots available. One player granted his wish was Western Jets’ utility Oscar Junker. Junker, originally from Werribee Districts, landed at North Melbourne in the second round of the rookie draft. Jets’ coach Torin Baker was impressed with the versatility Junker displayed on the field and his leadership as co-captain during a season in which he finished second in the club best-and-fairest behind Brodie Romensky. “He can play in all positions,” Baker said. “I think he’ll end up being more of a back and a midfielder.
“He’s a natural footballer, a highly skilled player and excellent character.” For every good news story coming out of the draft, there are downsides for scores more. Romensky is the Jets’ hard-luck story, missing out on the draft despite playing at a high level in the TAC Cup all season. “I don’t think Brodie could do any more than he’s done this year,” Baker said. “He won our best and fairest by a long way, performed well at national championships and played well in a couple of VFL games for Williamstown.” There were some left bemused when Williamstown gun midfielder Michael Gibbons went undrafted in the same year he won the Liston Trophy for best and fairest in the VFL. Former Seagull Andrew Gallucci at least got another chance to prove himself at Carlton.
Meanwhile, the Western Bulldogs have opted for tall timber with their first round selections at both the national and rookie drafts. The Bulldogs swooped on Tim English in the national draft – the highest rated underage ruckman in the land, who comes out of Pingelly in Western Australia. The premiers also picked up ruck-forward Nathan Mullenger-McHugh (Eastern Ranges) in the rookie draft. Others to join the Bulldogs include dynamic forward Patrick Lipinski (Northern Knights), key forward Lewis Young (Sturt) and midfielder-forward Fergus Greene (Bendigo Pioneers), while Josh Prudden was retained as a rookie. Lance Jenkinson
Bulldogs grant AFL wish By Tara Murray Northern Knights’ Patrick Lipinski experienced the best day of his life earlier this year. As a diehard Western Bulldogs supporter, he was in heaven as the Bulldogs broke their 62-year VFL/AFL premiership drought in October. Yet he only had to wait a month or so to have that feeling of elation trumped in a most fitting fashion. The Bulldogs used their second pick, number 28, in the AFL national draft on Friday night to bring the 18-year-old to the club. “I wasn’t expecting to be taken at pick 28 – I thought I might have been picked up later on,” Lipinski said. “It [the premiership] was the best moment of my life. I’ve been a supporter since I was three and been so passionate and was at the ground on grand final day. “It’s now the second best moment in my life.” The Bulldogs were one of 10 clubs that had spoken to Lipinski at the AFL national combine in October. “It’s been ridiculous,” he said. “If someone said to me I’d be drafted, I wouldn’t have believed them. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work and sacrificed a lot.” It’s been a whirlwind 12 months for Lipinski, who played only two games for the Knights after being added to the squad midway through last season. He gave up basketball and decided to focus on football, making the Knights’ squad for this season. The decision of the Knights’ coaches to move him from the forward line to midfield this season proved to be vital. He played the first six games of the season in the forward line, kicking at least a goal in each game. “The change to the midfield made recruiters take notice of me and sparked interest,” he said. “I played three games there before hurting my hand, which was annoying. “I was lucky to get back and play another three games.” Lipinski becomes the second Eltham junior player to be recruited by the Bulldogs in recent years, following in the footsteps of Marcus Bontempelli. Lipinski said he had received several welcoming texts from officials and players.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ It
was great to catch up with some great sports people of the west in the past week. Last Thursday, Hotel 520 hosted a Bulldogs dinner with Doug Hawkins, Brad Johnson and premiership players Matthew Boyd and Jake Stringer. The current players have enjoyed a very festive celebration of the premiership success, and who would begrudge them that? Stringer reported back to training last Thursday while Boyd has until next week before he will be back at Whitten Oval. Stringer said the best thing about being back at the kennel was seeing his name in premiership gold letters on his No.9 locker. Surprisingly, Boyd has not watched the grand final at all since the big day, only seeing the odd highlight.
■ Past
players Hawkins and Johnson loved the success of the current side, but had different reactions on the day. Johnson was right in the thick of the red, white and blue bench in his role for Fox Footy, while Hawkins watched with his family in the Southern Stand. Even though he had passes to go everywhere, Hawkins did not go on the ground after the final siren or into the rooms. He said he felt that it was the players’ time and space. He waited until the cup returned to the Whitten Oval on the Sunday, embracing the victory and the players then. I am looking forward to introducing Travis Cloke and the draftees on Inside the Kennel at the Yarraville Club on Thursday, December 8.
■ Hawkins
was also up and about early last Sunday morning in his role as ambassador for the Men’s Walk for Health in memory of Graeme “Creamy” Davis. Hawkins lined up with fellow ambassadors Barry Michael and Mick Martyn to raise funds for the Western Health Foundation. Event founder Jo Davis has assembled a great committee and hopefully can build this into a major event in the years to come.
■ It’s
been great to see the Dean boys in the runs. Matt has had a very good start to the season with Werribee, as has Sean, who peeled off a century in the most recent subbies game while his younger brother, Travis, was bringing up a ton for the Bushrangers against New South Wales. Travis is being mentioned as a potential Australian player, something he is playing down by allowing his bat to do the talking. Kevin Hillier

Westie soars where Eagles dare By Lance Jenkinson Daniel Venables and his family were set for his selection by an interstate club in Friday night’s AFL national draft. So when Venables landed a spot at West Coast Eagles, based on the other side of the country from his Taylors Lakes home, a well-oiled machine got his bags packed, a meet-and-greet was held for adoring friends and family, before the lad was checked onto his Sunday evening flight. This week, the western suburbs’ best young footballer will start on the road to becoming a full-time professional. “It will be a little bit challenging,” Venables said of his interstate move. “But we’ve prepared ourselves for a while for this to happen.” Venables was inundated with phone calls and texts from the moment he was selected by West Coast as a first-round pick in the draft. The 18-year-old did his utmost to get back to all his well-wishers, but the turnaround between the draft and his relocation was short. What Venables will never forget is the support over the long-term of his family, friends, teammates and coaches, particularly the impact of junior club Keilor, TAC Cup side Western Jets and the teachers and students at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School.

‘Bull at a gate’ impresses all
I’ll just provide a tough, competitive person, who’ll - Daniel Venables give their all
’’
“The phone has been going crazy, but I love it,” he said. “I’ve met so many people over the journey, so they’re excited for me. “Through Keilor, PEGS and Western Jets, I’ve had so much support. It’s been a bit overwhelming … so I guess I’m glad it’s finally paid off, and I can’t wait to get around everyone and just thank them, which is what I’m doing at the moment.” Venables is no Johnny-come-lately to the AFL scene. He was born into football, unlike some of the converts from other sports chosen more for their attributes than football skills, in the hope these will translate. Football ran in the family from the moment his great grandfather Johnny Lewis captain-coached North Melbourne and pulled on the Big V. His granddad Fred Robinson played for North Melbourne, while his dad Peter was once on Collingwood’s under-19 list. Getting drafted to the AFL is what Venables has wanted for as long as he can remember. “I’ve been waiting for so long for that day to happen, and it finally happened,” he said of the wait, still nursing a foot injury from the latter half of the season. “I’m just keen to get into it now.” Even though Venables has planned for this day and dreamed about the moment he may be drafted, it took a while for it to sink in on the night. “I was in shock to be honest,” he said. “I couldn’t really do anything, it was all out of my control, so it was pretty nerve wracking. “I’m glad it’s over, and I’m happy that I’ve gone to the Eagles. I didn’t expect to be going there, but I’m so glad they called my name out because they’re a fantastic club. “To be able to learn off the likes of Sam Mitchell, Matt Priddis and Luke Shuey in the midfield, not many 18 year olds get the opportunity to do that.” Venables spoke to West Coast’s recruiters three times, but they never let the cat out of the bag that his name was so high on their list. He had an inkling that he might be heading interstate, but thought the Brisbane Lions were showing the most interest. The mystery surrounding his selection just made the night all the more special. “I didn’t know I was going there, so when my name got called out, it was crazy,” Venables said. Venables’ playing style has often been compared to West Coast forward/midfielder

Luke Shuey. The Vic Metro representative has admired from afar the way Shuey goes about his football. Lo and behold, Venables will live with Shuey in his first week at the club. Excited about that possibility, Venables will also get the chance to catch up with former Western Jets’ midfielder Liam Duggan, a first-round draft selection two years ago. “I’ve met ‘Duggo’ before and he’s an awesome guy,” Venables said. “He’s messaged me already, so I’m pretty keen to get stuck into it and meet all of the boys.” Being West Coast’s first draft choice, there
48 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 30, 2016
will be plenty expected of Venables in the west, but he won’t get caught up in external noise. “It would, obviously, be a dream to play my first game, but I’m not putting any pressure on myself,” he said. “The club has said they’re not putting any pressure on me, they just want me to take my time and do everything I can to get back [to 100 per cent fitness]. “At the moment, I’m just trying to get into the club, earn my respect and take it from there. “I’ll just provide a tough, competitive person, who will give their all. “That’s what I’m wanting to prove at the moment, and the rest will come.”
Western Jets coach Torin Baker could see something special in Daniel Venables long before he was selected by the West Coast Eagles in the 2016 AFL national draft. It was back when Venables was playing for the Jets in an under-16 game against Calder Cannons and showing his full repertoire of skills that Baker and Jets region manager Shane Sexton decided he was ready, then and there, to face bigger, stronger and more experienced opponents in the under-18 TAC Cup. “We played him in three games that year [2014] as a 16-year-old in the Jets’ under-18 group,” Baker said. “Watching him that day, we were a fan of the way he played and knew he had great talent.” Venables, with a taste of the TAC Cup under his belt, fronted up the next season as a bottomage player and showed flashes of brilliance. Any question marks entering his top-age season were dispelled this year when he fronted up in round one and produced a dazzling performance against Oakleigh Chargers. “At the start of the year, I really had high hopes that he’d be around this mark in the draft, but obviously a lot has to take place,” Baker said. “His round one game against Oakleigh was excellent.” Venables found his way into the Vic Metro side for the national championships by midyear. He impressed in the Big V title-winning run, earning All-Australian honours. The recruiters were drawn to his bull-at-a-gate style in the forward half and his eye for a goal, particularly in pressure situations. He ticks another box with his defensive work. Venables got an invitation to the AFL draft combine but could not attend because of a foot injury. He didn’t need the extra testing as West Coast liked what they saw in his football and pounced with pick 13 in the draft, perhaps envisaging a player with characteristics similar to a star already on their list: forward/ midfielder Luke Shuey. Baker sees West Coast as a perfect fit for Venables. “Obviously he’s got to move and it will take some adjustment, but I think West Coast have proven they play a lot of their youngsters early and the fast decks over there will suit him.” Baker has no doubt Venables will handle the move with aplomb. He says Venables is not too dissimilar to Liam Duggan, a former Western Jet selected by the Eagles in the first round of the 2014 draft. “I think he’ll handle it,” Baker said. “He’s a strong-minded boy and, like Liam, they’re both really close to their families. When you’re determined to achieve your goal and you’ve got something inside you that says you want to make the most of the opportunity you’ve been given, you find a way.” Lance Jenkinson

Ready for the next step By Lance Jenkinson The first official training run for Footscray Rugby Union Club is not until Tuesday night, but new coach Tia Suemai has already gained an insight into the players he inherited. In a signal of intent, the Bulldog players took it upon themselves weeks ago to kick-start their pre-season campaign without prompting by Suemai or his assistant coach, Rob Auimatagi. “We start training officially on December 6, so that’s when we’re bringing everyone all together, but the senior players have taken that initiative to get things going early,” Suemai said. “You need that kind of attitude to be successful and you need guys that are willing to put it into action.” Footscray will be looking to take the next step and play finals in season 2017. The Bulldogs had a disappointing Dewar Shield season this year, collecting just four wins and finishing third-last on the table. Suemai believes in the talent he has at his disposal, but feels some changes need to be made off the field. “The good thing about Footscray is they’ve always got the cattle,” Suemai said. “I guess it’s just the fundamentals, the basics – getting the conditioning right and getting the mindset right. “It has to be a place where guys really enjoy their footy – that’s No. 1.”
New Footscray coach Tia Suemai is welcomed to the fold by club president Thomas Gulliver. (Steven Dowden)
Suemai has lived and breathed rugby his whole life. Like most boys growing up in New Zealand, he dreamed of one day playing for the All Blacks. That never eventuated, but he did get a taste of international rugby with Manu Samoa. “I was very honoured to be able to represent Samoa for a couple of Tests,” Suemai said. As a coach, Suemai is well travelled, having led sevens side Borneo Eagles and coached Victorian rugby sides Melbourne University and Melbourne Unicorns.
Suemai’s most recent job was with the Melbourne Rebels as a development officer in the western suburbs, the Point Cook resident working closely with Footscray and other clubs and schools in the area. “I looked after the western region schools and clubs, coaching the coaches and running courses,” Suemai said. “That’s how I got familiar with Footscray. The club kind of reminded me of my old club [Otahuhu] back in Auckland. “I know the struggles they have gone through and got to see the success they’ve had, what they can do when they’re set and the culture is good. “That’s when I was asked if I was keen – and I was very keen.” Suemai’s vision is to have Footscray relying largely on talent from the west. He wants to see a lessening of the drain of players from this region crossing the West Gate Bridge to play their rugby. “There’s lots of raw talent in Footscray, lots of good players in the area,” Suemai said. “Hopefully, we can attract some of those players that live in the west … instead of them travelling past our club and into the city, build a good reputation in the west.” Suemai is “very excited” to be taking charge of Footscray. “It’s just the history of the club and what they have … it’s a great opportunity,” he said.

Seasoned campaigners let fly for Eagles Yarraville has snapped out of its sub-district cricket funk in the best possible way, thrashing new kids on the block Taylors Lakes by 78 runs at Yarraville Oval on Saturday – and posting their first win of the campaign. Set a modest 192 for victory, seasoned Eagles’ campaigners Matthew Love (109) and Matthew Harrison (128no) got to work, sending the ball all around the ground during a 219-run second wicket partnership. Harrison belted 22 fours and a six, while Love made 13 fours and three sixes as the Eagles amassed 2-269. Without a win after the opening four rounds, Yarraville will be hoping this will kickstart their summer, as they face a must-win, two-day game away to third-last Box Hill. Williamstown has moved into the top six after an outright win over Hoppers Crossing away at Hogans Road Reserve. The Seagulls were in command from go to whoa to record a comfortable win. Brent McMinn was the standout with the bat, making 42 and 35 not out, while there were four wickets apiece to Murray Ring in the first innings and Bryce Preston in the second innings. Williamstown has a chance to consolidate its spot in the top six when it hosts winless Endeavour Hills in a two-dayer beginning Saturday. Altona remains best placed of the local clubs, despite losing by 61 runs to Balwyn in the top of the table clash at Frank Kirk Oval. The A’s could only muster 199 in their chase for Balwyn’s 7-260. Shane Jones was the standout for the A’s with 71, but a number of teammates could not go on with their starts – three players were dismissed in the 20s and three more out in the teens. After licking wounds, Altona will go to Bayswater for a two-dayer starting Saturday. In the VTCA senior division, Yarraville Club got the first innings points over Doutta Stars on day one at Buckley Park. The Clubbers were on shaky ground, skittled for 147, but their bowlers came out breathing fire to rout the Stars for 52. Emmett Bronca torched the Stars with a 7-11 off 11 overs. The Clubbers are 0-24, with an overall lead of 119. Spotswood has an interesting run chase on its hands after being set 242 for a win over Strathmore on the road at Syd McGain Oval. Lance Jenkinson

Bulldogs celebrations are short-lived Two days have delivered two contrasting results for Footscray Edgewater in Premier Cricket’s shortest format. The Bulldogs split their opening weekend of Twenty20 games, beating Greenvale Kangaroos by one run in a thriller at Greenvale Reserve before suffering a nine-wicket thrashing at the hands of Kingston Hawthorn at Merv Hughes Oval on Sunday. Victory over Greenvale on Saturday came down to the wire – the last ball, in fact. Kangaroos tailender Aaron Smilie needed two runs for the win, one run to tie, off the last ball, but was caught by Jack Sheppard off the bowling of all-rounder Hayden Butterworth. Earlier in the day, Footscray Edgewater hit 4-134 off their 20 overs, thanks largely to a
run-a-ball 49 not out from captain Dylan Kight. He hit six sixes and featured in an unbroken 82-run stand with Jakob Tidyman, who made an entertaining 45 off 28 balls, including four sixes and two fours. With a small total to defend, consistent wickets were the key for Footscray Edgewater to keep Greenvale in check. Ben Green was the chief destroyer with 3-21 off four, while Kight had two dismissals from the wicketkeeping position, a catch and a stumping. While it was a joyful start to the weekend for Footscray Edgewater, the smiles would not last. The side crashed to earth a day later. The Bulldogs could manage only 9-102 off their 20 overs – nowhere near enough to beat
Kingston Hawthorn, which passed the target one down with 2.4 overs to spare. Kight was again the top scorer for Footscray Edgewater with 21, while there were contributions from Lucas Dredge (19no), Butterworth (18) and Tim Buszard (15). Dredge’s late dash was reaped off just nine balls and included two fours and a six, ensuring the Bulldogs reached triple figures. Kingston Hawthorn cruised to the win on the back of 54 not out from Ben Slater. There will be two more Twenty20 games this weekend, with Footscray Edgewater travelling to Prahran on Saturday and then hosting Casey-South Melbourne on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson
