Child centre on the brink By Benjamin Millar
12331274-RC46-16
A West Footscray childcare centre is seeking urgent support to survive in the face of a 12-month redevelopment blow-out predicted to create a $1 million revenue shortfall. Parents at Church Street Children’s Centre descended on last week’s Maribyrnong council meeting to detail impacts of the botched redevelopment of the council’s building. The committee of management has also written to Maribyrnong councillors outlining the severity of the impact on the centre’s viability, noting it has already had to cut staff and increase fees to help stem spiralling losses. The council had initially told parents their
children would remain in place while the centre was redeveloped to increase capacity from 40 to 76 places, a project due to be finished by January. In June, families were forced to relocate to the Maribyrnong Community Centre for six months after an 11th hour discovery that there would be no working toilets at the Church Street centre. “A range of structural issues” has now pushed the project deadline out a further 12 months until 2018. Many families have already abandoned the service and the uptake of places in 2017 is well below projected numbers as families baulk at another 12 months of travelling to Maribyrnong.
Council community services director Clem Gillings said nobody in council was happy with where the project was headed. “Unfortunately, we received some time ago some very poor advice from architects and structural engineers and now we collectively have to fix this problem, making sure we end up with a very good outcome regardless.” Council chief executive Stephen Wall said the council had “formed a blacklist of contractors” and was seeking damages. Mayor Catherine Cumming said the “bad situation” could provide an opportunity to redevelop the entire site from scratch. • The reporter uses the Church Street Children’s Centre childcare service.

Strike threat over council EBA By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council employees are threatening 24-hour strikes, including work bans such as not mowing parks, cleaning up rubbish or processing building permits, under a bitter industrial dispute. A council source, who asked not to be identified, told Star Weekly workers were demanding greater employment security amid fears of outsourcing. Workers are due to vote on a new enterprise agreement next month.
Union members will stage a meeting outside the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona at lunchtime on Wednesday. “After the loss of the childcare centres, it’s now understood aged care and depot operations are next,” the source said. “There are four unions involved in a no-vote to the EBA. The council workers are … undertaking another vote for the second time in four to six weeks. “This is gonna blow up big-time. We’ve got protected work bans ready to be commenced.”
A list of 49 potential industrial actions also includes work bans on collecting rates, street cleaning, filling potholes, issuing parking fines, picking up dead animals, answering phone calls or reading and responding to emails from the chief executive, directors, managers or councillors. Australian Services Union branch co-ordinator Billy King said employees were concerned about the “history of council contracting out services like childcare, which they did a couple of years ago”.
“We have job security on the line and we’re going to be telling our members that they need to start taking protected industrial action,” he said. “That would be periodic or indefinite bans on performance of work, so stuff like no overtime, not answering phone calls for certain periods … what we’re after is … giving us a go at tendering for our own jobs.” A council spokesman said unions meeting with their members was a normal event during an enterprise agreement process.

Cheap eats a win, win, win An Altona North cafe is offering 10 meals for $15 under an Australian-first pilot. UrCommunity co-founder and executive director Peter Malliaros said his cafe, attached to Altona North library and a joint initiative with Hobsons Bay council, was “about food security for the community”. “We believe that food is not a luxury, it’s a human right, and so we’ve set up like a gym membership,” he said. “You pay $15 a week and that entitles you to all our specials, including 10 meals, which is five continental breakfasts and five buffet dinners. “With every subscription or membership that we get someone to sign up on, it actually
helps us feed more people who are at or below the poverty line – so it’s a win, win, win. “We’re looking to sign up a minimum of 100 and that actually underpins the cafe operations; 200 would allow us the flexibility of opening up at another site.” Mr Malliaros said most customers were taking away their dinners and could even collect five dinners at once. He said the food was donated from a variety of sources. Depending on what’s on hand, dinner meals might include creamy carbonara with roast potatoes and salad, or chicken curry with rice and roasted carrots. “There’s a 100 per cent money-back

guarantee,” he said. “You only have to sign up for a week … if, for argument’s sake, you tried it out for a week and you weren’t happy, we just give you your 15 bucks back – it’s that simple.” From February, the UrCommunity plans to host free weekly dinners. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the council was supporting UrCommunity in providing low-cost meals because it was a challenge for many people to find affordable meals. “It’s a great service and we recommend people take advantage of it,” she said. A former kickboxing champion from Seddon has been charged over the infamous 1994 Richmond “road gang” heist on an Armaguard van. Pasquale Lanciana, 59, a former Australian welterweight champion, was arrested about 7am last Friday. Lanciana appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court later that day charged with armed robbery, robbery, kidnapping, false imprisonment, theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods and money laundering. The charges relate to a robbery on June 22, 1994, when a gang of men dressed as road workers allegedly stopped an Armaguard truck turning onto a freeway on-ramp just before the Punt Road bridge over the Yarra River. They allegedly held the guard in the back of the van at gunpoint as they handcuffed together the two guards in the front before putting bags over their heads. Police allege it took them less than eight minutes to steal $2.4 million. Lanciana faced the court on Friday afternoon when prosecutor Diana Hogan applied for him to provide a DNA sample. His lawyer, Melinda Walker, asked magistrate Peter Dunn for an adjournment. “I’ve been told there’s DNA found on a number of items, but I don’t know what, when, where,” she said. The case was adjourned for two weeks. Lanciana made no application for bail. The arrest was part of Operation Tideland, investigating several armed robberies and three unsolved murders, including the execution of Lanciana’s 25-year-old wife in 1984. Migrant workers conned
Childcare bid to no avail
By Benjamin Millar Many migrants living in Melbourne’s west are exploited at work, a landmark report reveals. Released last week, WEstJustice’s report Not just work pinpoints systemic and widespread exploitation that preys on some of society’s most vulnerable people. Unscrupulous employees are taking advantage of people’s fear of losing work, or even being deported, to cheat some workers out of tens of thousands of dollars in wages and entitlements, the report states. Report author Catherine Hemingway said exploitation is rife in industries, including food processing, hospitality, security, cleaning, construction, manufacturing and care work. “Some of the exploitation we have seen is so gross there is no way the employee can say they didn’t realise – in one case we had two workers being paid one salary between them, earning about five dollars per hour,” she said. “People may not know they are not being paid properly – we had someone being paid for four to five hours when they were doing 14-hour shifts.” The report draws on surveys and consultation with newly arrived and refugee workers, community leaders and staff at community organisations and agencies, as well as reports gathered through WEstjustice’s pilot employment law service and community education program. Ms Hemingway said laws have struggled to keep pace with the rapid change in employment practices, opening the door for sham contracting, gross underpayment and other forms of exploitation. While WEstjustice’s refugee employment law project has helped more than 200 workers from more than 30 countries in the past two years, Ms Hemingway believes this is merely

the tip of the iceberg of rogue employees taking advantage of migrants. The service trains community leaders to help new residents understand the laws that protect workers, and know how to identify illegal work arrangements. Neng Boi, a Burmese refugee of Kuki ethnic background, said she and other leaders have worked to educate their communities on their
rights and responsibilities in the workplace. “People are often afraid they will lose their job for speaking out,” she said. “They know it is unfair, but because they may be settling here with no qualifications and find it so hard to get work, they are fearful. “For us the first step is to encourage them to understand their rights, then to get legal advice from WEstjustice.”
Parents launching a last-ditch bid to stave off the closure of a Footscray childcare service have had their hopes dashed. Star Weekly reported in July that Empire Street Early Learning Centre would shut on December 16 following a closed-door decision by Maribyrnong council based on a 2014 review. More than 30 families have since been offered places at other centres, the majority being asked to relocate to Maribyrnong River Children’s Centre. Mother Adrienne Ward asked last week’s council meeting for an immediate review of the decision by the newly elected council ahead of the December closure. “It is imperative that the community has a chance to access the soundness of this decision,” she said But Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall said all councillors were familiar with the decision to close the centre and had been advised that the move had been lawfully made and enacted. A request from councillor Sarah Carter to release the confidential report won’t be addressed until December 13, just three days before the centre closes. Council community services director Clem Gillings said the council was engaged with the state government on working towards a fully integrated early learning centre next to Footscray City Primary School. Paid parking a turn-off: report By Benjamin Millar The introduction of parking meters in Yarraville Village pushed people out of the popular shopping strip, new research reveals. A joint Melbourne University and Monash University study shows visitation rates dropped immediately after the machines were switched on last August amid much controversy. They, and all parking machines in the Footscray CBD, were switched off in December. The peer-reviewed study by Dr Gary Au and Professor William Young, presented last
week at a major transport conference, found the $1.80 an hour parking led to a decline in business turnover as shoppers abandoned the village for shopping centres with free parking, such as the nearby Yarraville Square. A business survey found an average business turndown of 24 per cent, with smaller businesses the hardest hit. The year-long parking meter switch-off across Footscray and Yarraville has created an estimated $2.4 million blow to council coffers to date, with a further $200,000 revenue shortfall every month they remain off.
Revenue from the Yarraville meters in the three months they were on ranged from $1240 to $3940 a week, despite expectations they would collect $6900 a week. Dr Au said the study provided a solid evidence base for Maribyrnong council as it reconsiders if and when to switch the machines back on. He said earlier studies commissioned by council had been haphazard and compared “apples with oranges” by including different areas in the before-and-after data. “We are neither for nor against paid parking – we are just there to assess and publish,” he
said. “We have provided our results to council and are prepared to work with council to build a bit of an evidence base.” Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall said that following the election of a new council, officers would wait for direction from council as to the development and consideration of a parking management policy. “In developing a policy, all available information will be taken into account,” he said. “Until a policy is adopted by council, the meters will not be switched back on.”
Rooftop bar on the way Footscray is on the verge of getting its first rooftop bar after plans were backed for approval by Maribyrnong council officers. The proposal for a rooftop bar at Back Alley Sally’s, the former T-shirt factory that has been operating as a bar in Yewers Street since the start of this year, was due to be voted on at last night’s Maribyrnong council planning meeting. The application also seeks to extend Friday and Saturday closing times from 11pm to 1am and increase the number of patrons permitted inside the venue from 100 to 157. The plans received five letters of support from surrounding businesses and residents. But 13 objections were lodged on grounds relating to parking and noise impacts to surrounding residents. The bar was approved last November after the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal found it would add “interest and vitality” to the
area, the balance between its adverse amenity impacts and the planning scheme’s support of the proposal falling “heavily in favour of the bar”. A council officer report on the latest proposal notes there have been no complaints raised or investigated since the bar opened early this year. “It is recommended the amendments be supported subject to additional acoustic control for the roof top and limiting the hours of the roof top bar,” the report states. It is proposed the rooftop bar hours be 11am to 10pm daily and that it has capacity of 100 people. The report says the proposed amendments to hours and patron numbers will not impact upon the amenity of the area and that other late night venues are “sufficiently dispersed”. Benjamin Millar

A new stage of concern The impending affects of calamitous climate change are being brought to the stage by some of the west’s most promising young theatre talent. Developed and created by the Edge Ensemble, Western Edge Youth Arts is presenting the premiere of CALIBAN at The Coopers Malthouse from Thursday to Saturday nights. Actor Abraham Herasan said the story, set in a not-too-distant future on the brink of climate disaster, explores global climate politics through the eyes of those most affected and was inspired by situations already facing many Pacific islands. “I think most of us want to make a difference towards a better future, but there is a small
minority who are making the decisions,” he said. “I believe we are an eager generation and there are a lot of young people who want to make the world a better place.” CALIBAN was born as a street show presented at Big West Festival in 2015, but has since then been developed into an entirely new work. CALIBAN will be performed from 7pm nightly from Thursday to Saturday at The Coopers Malthouse, 113 Sturt Street, Southbank. Bookings: 9685 5111 or thecoopersmalthouse. com.au. Benjamin Millar

Cash to oil wheels of community By Benjamin Millar Programs to improve health, parenting and community connection are some of the 50 projects that will share in $166,000 from Maribyrnong council’s latest round of community grants funding. The 2016-17 Community Grants Program was approved at last week’s council meeting, signing off on funding for 50 of the 75 grant applications. Eighteen of the largest grants, totalling $104,000, were approved along with 20 arts
and culture grants valued at almost $23,000, 11 community development grants ($16,500) and five environment grants ($13,215). The Footscray-based Women’s Circus received $15,000 for a new, inclusive program; cohealth got $15,000 for a parents’ support program at the Braybrook Hub; and the RAISE Foundation received $14,000 for a mentoring program for young mothers in Braybrook. Snuff Puppets were granted $12,000 for a new work in partnership with Braybrook Community Hub, $10,000 went to Reclink for an arts program for disadvantaged people, and
the same amount went to the YMCA to tackle health, fitness and after school programs. Cr Martin Zakharov said the range of activities the council supported was “tremendously important”. Cr Mia McGregor said she was pleased the council was able to help organisations making valuable community contributions.

Families: the musical woven together with the singing human voice. Saulwick said the process made her consider her own relationships with her parents and her young son. “It’s made me reflect on how we communicate within my family and how important that is.” Permission to Speak is a first-time collaboration between Saulwick and composer Kate Neal. The complex relationship between a parent and their child has proven fertile creative fodder for the latest production by Seddon theatre creator-performer Tamara Saulwick. Chamber Made Opera is launching the world premiere of Permission to Speak, a choral performance about family relationships. Director Saulwick says the work draws together original sound recordings and performed text to explore what can and can’t be said between parent and child in different families and at various life stages. “This is a relationship that’s there through your lifetime and it evolves whether you’re 12 or 25 or 40 and have your own kids,” Saulwick said. “The thing that talking to people has brought to attention is that the art of intimate conversation is a skill and something we learn in our family by way of example.” Permission to Speak was crafted from a series of interviews with people of all ages and

Sadness over kinders closing By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona West Kindergarten will close five days before Christmas, with two more Altona kindergartens earmarked for closure when a $6.9 million early-years hub is built. Altona Kindergarten and Somers Parade Kindergarten have also been slated for closure, a move that parents are fighting. Altona West committee of management secretary Amanda Ryan said children at her kindergarten would either go to other kindergartens in the area or start school next year. “We’re the smallest, so in terms of being viable it was hardest,” she said.
“We can’t physically keep enough students in here to make it viable to cover our costs. “We fought really hard to stay open until the hub came, but it just came down to the business side of it. … at the moment Altona and Somers Parade [kindergartens] are earmarked to close, to go to the hub.” The hub will be built next to Altona P-9 College in Grieve Parade. Early Childhood Management Services (ECMS), the cluster manager responsible for staffing at Altona West, Altona and Somers Parade kindergartens, said only Seaholme Kindergarten was likely to remain open. ECMS area manager Patty McLean said it was devastating the kindergarten was closing.
“It’s so sad to lose a valuable community service like this. “We’re all devastated that this has happened, but we just can’t sustain the doors open until the hub comes along,” she said. Hobsons Bay council director Peter Hunt said any decision on the viability of the Somers Parade and Altona kindergartens would “depend on enrolment numbers and the level of support from the committee of management”. Altona West Kindergarten, which opened in 1970, will host a fun day for current and past families on December 9 from 2-7pm. For details visit the Altona West Kindergarten Facebook page.

Water wisdom awarded Williamstown High School has been named wise-water school of the year in the ResourceSmart Schools Awards. Sustainability Victoria chief executive Stan Krpan said the awards gave schools an opportunity to showcase their efforts at statewide level. Williamstown High was recognised for linking water issues to the curriculum, recycling rainwater, having large gutters and 12 large water tanks, using half-flush systems and, on its Bayview Street campus, using wetlands water for its toilet system. School environmental initiatives leader Sally Hayes said the children were now using an average of less than 400 litres of water each a year. “We also have a fantastic wetlands of four
major ponds that use filters,” she said. “These filters then go to the final last pond or reservoir that then goes out to either the sea or to the reserve. “We also had all the students work on spreading the word of using less water and being water-wise – ‘every drop counts’. “The senior campuses have got new taps that only turn on for a certain time … the junior campus has always had that. “Our school uses tank water for the flushing of the toilets. “We do have a horticultural area, and with that we’re being water-wise as well.” This year’s awards received a record 209 entries. Making a muddy difference Raising funds for men’s health was all in a day’s muddy work for Seddon’s Lauren Gunston (pictured left) at the weekend. Ms Gunston and her team of friends got down and dirty as they took on the 18-kilometre Tough Mudder course for the charity Movember, raising awareness of men’s health issues including prostate cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. More than 10,000 people tackled the mud and obstacle challenge at St Anne’s Winery in Myrniong, testing their mental and physical stamina while neck-deep in mud. Benjamin Millar

When the Pope came to town By Goya Dmytryshchak As one headline proclaimed at the time, the west was blessed when Pope John Paul II visited St Leo the Great parish in Altona North 30 years ago. The pontiff led prayer and hymn singing in the church before meeting the children of St Leo the Great Primary School, granting a private audience to grade 4 pupils and teacher Marianne Massarany. The parish’s priest, Father Paul Tru, said the 30th anniversary of the visit would be celebrated with a mass and blessing of a statue of the Pope. “It’s a wonderful thing because we are the only parish in Australia visited by him,” he said. “We are not rich, we are not big, but we were blessed by his visit. And now he is not only a mere Pope … he is a Saint Pope.” Bishop Mark Edwards will conduct mass from 5pm on Sunday November 26, followed by a party in the school hall from 6pm. Seaholme’s Jessie Hodgson recalls struggling to catch a glimpse of the Pope on November 27, 1986. “I came down to see him and the crowd was so great I couldn’t see anything,” she said. “So, I went down the corner of Millers Road and Mason Street … I was the only person there and a car passed and the popemobile had to stay because the traffic lights went red. “And he blessed me. I thought, ‘I’m the only one here, he’s blessing no one else’. “His skin was translucent, and even though the windows of the car were between me and him, I felt as though I was in a great presence. You could feel it.” Details: email stleothegreatparish@gmail. com or call 9391 7111

Old sewer gets new look By Charlene Macaulay This is your first look at a new community park that will be built along a disused open sewer line. Melbourne Water is about to begin work on a 100-metre section of the historic main outfall sewer reserve, next to the Federation Trail in Williams Landing, between Triller Court and Mallard Close. The water authority has joined forces with Wyndham council, City West Water and VicRoads on Greening the Pipeline, a project that proposes to convert 27 kilometres along the heritage-listed sewer line into parkland, creating “innovative open spaces” spanning multiple suburbs. The outfall sewer, constructed in the 1890s, runs from the old Spotswood pumping station to the treatment plant at Werribee. The park at Williams Landing is the first stage of the project, to be followed by a 3.7kilometre stretch spanning Williams Landing, Hoppers Crossing, Truganina and Laverton North. The pilot park is the only part of the project to be funded so far – it is unclear how much the total project will finally cost. Melbourne Water has released an artist impression of what the Williams Landing section will look like once works are complete next year. Kitty Niven from Melbourne Water said the new landscaped park would be irrigated with recycled stormwater, which will be harvested locally and stored underground. “Our vision is to create a vibrant space that will connect communities and add to Melbourne’s status … providing a unique place to meet, play and relax.” Details: www.greeningthepipeline.com.au
Council calls for public input Three community feedback sessions will be held next month to give people a say in what Hobsons Bay council should be prioritising this term for funding in its next budget. People are being invited to speak with their councillor or make a three-minute presentation to help shape the Council Plan 2017-21 and council’s 2017-18 budget. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said community feedback would help ensure the council worked to address community needs. “Have we got it right, is there anything missing?” she said. “This is your chance to have your say or ask for funding. As well as the budget, we’re keen for the community to have input on what we should be putting into action.” Sessions will run from 6-8pm and be held on December 5 at Laverton Community Hub, December 8 at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona, and December 12 at the Newport Community Hub. People are required to RSVP at least four days before a session. Register at participate.hobsonsbay.vic. gov.au, email communityengagement@ hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au or call 9932 1000. Pre-registration is required to make a three-minute presentation. People can also complete a survey or make a budget submission until December 21, by visiting participate. hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au or call 9932 1000 to request a paper form.

NEWS
MY PLACE Living in the inner west for close to 20 years has helped shape the music and outlook of award-winning Seddon musician and composer Peter Knight … he talks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Seddon?
How did you come to pick up the trumpet?
We came in 1999 because it seemed like a lovely place, and prices were cheaper than St Kilda. I met Tamara, my partner, and we were living at opposite ends of Melbourne; we had some friends moving to Seddon and we found a really nice place. We bought this old factory and it’s a great space that really supports our work.
I liked the trumpet as a kid because it was shiny and interesting looking. Then I found out it had an amazing sound … I discovered Miles Davis.
I love the diversity. Proximity to Footscray is great, but the vibe in Seddon is pretty laid-back. The development of Footscray has been pretty ad hoc, and I think that’s a real shame. A lot of the potential in Footscray is untapped; there are these monstrously ugly developments along the Maribyrnong River and I don’t know why there isn’t better urban design in such a wonderful area, they are a blight on our neighbourhood. What are your favourite local places? I actually love the port setting and the industrial setting – the feeling of the urban and the industrial, the feeling of the movement of the boats and the people coming in from all around the world. I love the cafe culture in Seddon and Yarraville, there are some really great spots to sit and talk and while away the hours. I love the Sun Theatre, this incredible site we are so lucky to have. I also enjoy running and riding my bike along the Maribyrnong. Yarraville Yoga is another favourite sanctuary, what a treasure that place is.
I was asked to put a band together for the Big West Festival, which was tragically wound up this year. The band has toured the world many times, taking some kind of musical interpretation of Melbourne’s inner west to audiences far and wide. The win was for the first album we have released in five years; it was very satisfying. I also just won a composition prize for something I wrote for the Australian Art Orchestra. It’s a funny old world how these things happen. How has living in the west influenced you? In forming Way Out West, we wanted to get the sounds of the west and the different meetings of cultures. We often work in the space between cultures, and have a lot of cross-cultural collaboration with Indigenous musicians and lots of Asian collaborations, exploring these different approaches to music. Peter Knight will be performing with his son, Quinn, and friends on Friday night, playing jazz standards from 7pm at Feedback Café, 31 Ballarat Street, Yarraville. The Australian Art Orchestra will be joining celebrated Canadian composer and turntablist Nicole Lizée as part of the Sydney Festival on January 19.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds excellent street food in unusual places … The Footscray Hub arcade mostly seems wonderfully timeless and very African. But it’s only ever had, to the best of our knowledge, a single food outlet among its various hairdressers, clothes shops and more. These days that shop goes under the moniker Somali Star and is, I reckon, at least the third incarnation of that food space. It’s small – there’s two simple booths, so seating is restricted. But most customers are of the takeaway variety, and come and happily go for the sambusas. We’ve had these African versions of the samosa from here before – but never like this. Oh no, these are bigger and better by quite some margin. And, in the case of our lamb number, absolutely delicious; the flaky pastry generously stuffed with minced meat, onion and herbs. And at $3.50, they’re a superb, dead-set bargain. But while our sambusa is profoundly enjoyable, it is a holding pattern – pretty much – for our more substantial plates. We’re warned there’ll be a wait time of about 15 minutes. But we don’t mind that as we are very much enjoying the moment. What we get is unfussy, very enjoyable Somalian food. Pasta/beef ($12) displays the Italian influence on north African cuisine. The noodles go just right with a sauce that is a bit like a Somalian version of spag bol. Both are excellent.
SOMALI STAR CAFE Address: Footscray Hub (arcade between Nicholson and Albert streets) The rice/lamb ($13) comes without adornments. We’re familiar with Somalian rice being cooked in stock. This rice is quite different, pan fried (I think) with onion and small meat chunks. The lamb is something else. Normally, when eating lamb in neigbourhood and street food places, be they Indian, African or other, we are used to getting lovely meat that is nevertheless sporting its fair share of bone, fat and, or gristle. We don’t mind that at all, as the quality cooking of the meat invariably outweighs the extraneous bits. We admire the skill that makes such delicious food out of the cheapest cuts of meat. In the case of the lamb at Somali Star, we get all the cooking skill and none of the rest – save for the single, visible bone piece. The meat is very simply cooked; grilled and, as far as I can tell, unseasoned. But it is so wonderful, tender and yummy that I reckon a heap of much flasher eateries/ pubs/cafes would be happy to serve it and charge a whole bunch more in the process. When it’s time for a peace treaty with you Turning 60 is a big milestone and, for women, it can also be a time for self-reflection. Cynthia Barnett, EdD, a retirement specialist, says: “You begin thinking about your purpose in life, about finding what makes you happy and fulfilled. You may be ready for something new, work you love to do. “It’s a time when women need to seriously take stock of their lifestyle habits and make some changes.” There’s heaps of information about taking care of physical health but the 60s can also be a challenging time to maintain emotional and mental health. It’s often an age when marriage problems, work challenges or dealing with family issues are quite stressful. And it’s also when you find your body doesn’t withstand abuse as it did when younger, and health issues may arise. Here are some pointers from Barnett to staying on a mentally healthy track in your 60s: • Set aside quiet time every morning. Meditate, pray, visualise your day. Read something that inspires you. Focus on self-renewal.
• Have fun. Go bungee jumping, rock climbing, backpacking, skiing or dancing – whatever makes you happy. Act like you feel and you’ll feel youthful.
• Be optimistic. Take time to understand what you want out of life. Find purpose and meaning. Then spread the joy to others.
• Find a creative outlet. This helps prevent depression, which affects memory, and helps stimulate your mind. Take up painting. Create a wonderful garden. Engaging your creativity stimulates your brain more than reading, and certainly more than TV.
• Take up yoga. Yoga is great for both mind and body. It is great stretching exercise and enhances flexibility. Flexibility gives encourages better balance that helps avoid falls fractures.
• Make your home an oasis. Eliminate clutter. Fill your home with great music, books and friends. Withdraw and recharge when you need to.
PALM LAKE RESORT TRUGANINA LIVE THE LIFESTYLE YOU DESERVE
• Associate with positive people. They will not drain your valuable energy with complaints. They will help you pursue the best that life has to offer. The 60s can be the perfect time to carve out time for yourself and to set the course for the rest of your life. Keep a sharp eye on your physical health, but also take time to smell the roses. And if roses aren’t in your “garden” – plant them. Carole Levy

Stunning, contemporary and character-rich – this cracker of a place will have admirers aplenty. Two charming bedrooms share upstairs space with a bathroom and retreat, while two downstairs include the main, which has bifolds to an adorable, leafy courtyard. The fully tiled bathroom they share is en pointe and gorgeous. Hardwood floorboards, wonderful louvred windows, white palette and a soaring cathedral ceiling characterise the living areas of big lounge room and family-dining area. Under an angled and beamed ceiling, the all-white kitchen (stone benches, all mod-cons) sparkles, and windows frame beautiful gardens all round. A back verandah and timber decks are relaxation treats amidst the inviting greenery beautifying this block of about 535 square metres. Ducted heating and cooling, intercom, studio/workshop and carport are inclusions.
This house and its Californian bungalow-style make a pretty first impression with a white weatherboard façade and terracotta trim. The open-plan family-meals zone features a new kitchen that’s got stainless-steel appliances, granite benchtops and an abundance of storage space, and overlooks the meals area with fireplace. There are five bedrooms, three are on the ground floor and two upstairs. The two upstairs bedrooms have walk-in wardrobes and share a bathroom with twin vanity basins and tub. The backyard steals the show with a west-facing deck with an integrated gas barbecue, sink and wood-fired oven. The house has hydronic heating and air-conditioning.

This gorgeous house with its clever design has been finished with an acute attention to detail and features an array of luxurious appointments. Beautiful light fittings and stunning interior walls of glass complement high ceilings and timber floors. The main bedroom, with built-in wardrobe and en suite with spa, has balcony access. The kitchen is as sleek as they come, with premium appliances and designer cabinetry. The upstairs rumpus room has a bar and there’s a stunning central sculpture on show downstairs. The property has a courtyard, landscaped backyard and industrial-sized quadruple garage.
Tucked off Ballarat Road near Footscray City College, this ground-floor, strata-titled apartment – with its own car space – represents fantastic investment potential or a great first-time entry deal in a thriving suburb. At the front of the block, the apartment has two bedrooms, each with a built-in wardrobe, sharing a bathroom with the shower over its tub, and the laundry included. The separate kitchen, off a living room, has good storage and an electric upright cooker. The property is in the highly sought-after inner ring, less than nine kilometres (15-minute car trip) from the city, close to Ballarat Road bus connections, walking tracks and parks.

If we made a list of the most desirable aspects of living in South Williamstown this magnificent Victorian Queen (circa 1880 and previously owned by Mayor John Morgan) would satisfy many if not all the best attributes sought but so rarely acquired. The evocative charm of the Victorian facade, return veranda and bay windows maintains the beauty of yesteryear, whilst providing for spacious, up to date family accommodation with a sprawling, verdant rear garden. The front section of this large home maintains the gracious period aesthetics that we cherish, whilst the roomy extension offers a modern lifestyle. There’s ample room in the garden for a large pool (STCA) with excellent access via the side lane that serves the triple garage. Entertainers will delight in the huge kitchen with butler’s pantry and the indoor/outdoor living aspect.

ne of the things that most impressed me about Hyundai’s luxury car, the Genesis, was the balance achieved between ride and handling. But then a Genesis costs $65k. The surprise is that Hyundai has achieved that same balancing act with the far more price-friendly Elantra. It corners fast and flat without skipping, it’s predictable and solid. And it’s not just the ride/handling equation, it has beautifully weighted steering and a nicely taut chassis. When you feel like taking it gently you’ll note the interior is quiet and the fuel economy is pretty good, despite a willing motor and a well-matched six-speed auto that changes down when it should, rather than when it will use the least amount of fuel. It’s brisk away from the lights and it overtakes swiftly. Among all the sedans between $20k and $30k, this provides about the best driving experience you’ll find, along with heaps of practicality.
here are two Elantra models: the base Active, at $24,694 in manual or $27,071 in auto, and the Elite, just shy of $30k. If you can manage it, go for the Elite; the interior is noticeably nicer with richer, more tactile surfaces and an ambience that says quality. For all of that, the Active has everything you need. It surprised me that there is no navigation option. Hyundai instead asks you to plug in your iPhone and use its mapping, with the map and directions coming up on the in-built centre screen. This is fine only as long as you have phone range. Otherwise this is a terrific car. The seating is comfortable and supportive, and it’s easy to find the right driving position. But I didn’t like the forward posture of the head restraints, which can’t be tilted back. The dash layout is simple and clear and I liked the generous leg room up front. It’s still pretty good in the back too, but headroom will be an issue here with taller passengers.

SPORT D-Day looming for Keilor X-factor Daniel Venables has the X-factor that AFL recruiters are looking for, according to Western Jets coach Torin Baker. Venables has proven worthy of draft selection after an impressive top-age year in junior football. The Keilor product represented Vic Metro on the national stage and finished with AllAustralian honours. It’s Venables’ potential that excites the draft scouts. “He’s got the capacity to be a dual-position player at the next level,” Baker said. “He played a bit of midfield [in the TAC Cup], but I’d imagine he’s a player who would mainly play forward, but no doubt he’d want to be an AFL midfielder as well. “He’ll need to keep working harder on his endurance to do that, but he’s a high-end talent. “He’s a rare talent in terms of his explosiveness and ability to impact games when it matters, and there’s multiple examples of that.” Once Venables is off the board – he’s tipped
to be in the top-20 range – it will become a lottery for the Western Jets. Up to six more players are in contention to be drafted, whether it be in the national or rookie drafts. Two with solid claims are Brodie Romensky and Jets co-captain Oscar Junker after finishing first and second in the Jets’ best-and-fairest. Romensky, a halfback-midfielder, was the Jets’ most consistent player and featured in Vic Metro’s run to the national title. Junker, another defender-midfielder, was invited to the AFL draft combine. Recruiters have also made inquiries about wingman Judah Dundon, co-captain Wilson Berry and talls Harrison Bult and Brock McGregor.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Allan
Williams is one of those people clubs dream will knock on the door – tireless, generous, unassuming, down-to-earth, hard-working and not after a handout. Fifty-five years ago when ‘Titch’ arrived at Albion Football Club, neither he nor the club could have imagined the journey they were about to embark upon. That lifetime of memories has now come to an end, as Titch has hung up his shingle, and will now just watch his beloved Cats from the sidelines. Albion knows what a treasure they have, and have acknowledged his enormous contribution. Life membership of the club and the league is testament to his service. Enjoy your retirement, Titch. You deserve it.
Lance Jenkinson Harrison Bult could be a draft ‘smokey’ out of the Western Jets. (Damian Visentini)
■ Similarly,
it was good to see Spotswood award life membership to Chris Murphy and Megan Smith recently – the presentation will take place in the new year. While we all bemoan the dollar in local footy, it is good to see some things remain, like those salt-of-the-earth people who keep clubs ticking over. The clearance window for players is open until the end of the month, and there have been some interesting movements. The one that I am interested to follow is Josh MacDonald, moving from Glenorden to Altona. He is a talent who will be a great addition to the Vikings’ line-up.
■ The
third annual Movember T20 Challenge is on this Sunday at Hogans Road Reserve between Hoppers Crossing and Werribee Cricket Clubs. The day has been a great fundraiser in the past and, with more than $7000 raised to date, will hopefully hit the magical $10,000. The future stars game starts at 10.45 followed by the main game. There will be raffles, auctions and plenty on, with a bit of cricket thrown in for good measure. I did hear the Werribee boys wanted to make it a T19 challenge in keeping with the Cats recent batting form, but that idea was knocked on the head.
■ All
Countdown on for Jets By Lance Jenkinson It will be an intriguing AFL draft period for the Western Jets. The only ‘lock’ on the phantom draft boards is talented forward Daniel Venables, tipped to be taken in the top 20. Thereafter, the Jets’ prospects become a draft roulette, the club hoping the ball falls on their number once the elite 30 players are taken off the board. “We know that Daniel will be a certain pick and we expect him to be in the top 20 range,” Jets coach Torin Baker says with confidence. “For a lot of the other boys, and this is through the whole back end of the draft, it’s quite wide open from around pick 30 through to the rookie draft range. So from 30 through to 100, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.”
The draft chances of the 2016 crop of Jets hopefuls are particularly hard to assess because of the circumstances surrounding the team this season. How much weight is given to team performance when assessing an individual after the Jets missed out on the finals? Have injuries – and there were plenty of Jets lining up for surgery this year – dashed the hopes of certain players? Did players with private school commitments get enough exposure to AFL recruiters throughout the year? There are more questions than answers for the Jets ahead of Friday’s national draft and Monday’s rookie draft. Baker won’t be surprised at all if seven of his Jets players make it on to an AFL list come Monday evening, but he knows that number
60 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 23, 2016
is pie in the sky. “We feel as though we’ve got about seven boys in contention, but we don’t expect all seven will get drafted,” he said. “Three or four players drafted [overall in the national and rookie drafts] would be a good result for us. “We know some of our players are still being interviewed by clubs, as we speak, and there’s some solid interest in our group of players.” The only guarantee for the Jets players and any other hopeful is some restless nights between now and Friday’s draft. “I’ve spoken to most of them over the past couple of weeks and there’s a little bit of anxiety there about where they’ll go and if they’ll go,” Baker said. “I’m sure that’s the case with all the players in contention.”

roads lead to Hotel 520 on Sayers this Thursday to celebrate the Bulldogs’ premiership triumph. Matty Boyd and Doug Hawkins will join me to talk all things red, white and blue. Unfortunately, Marcus Bontempelli can’t make it. Friday, the Doggies will add to the premiership list with the latest batch of draftees. What a thrill for a young player to be drafted into such an exciting club at the moment, a far cry from a few years ago.

Battling Sports buoyed by rare road win Altona Sports skip Glenn Maxwell is hoping his side’s 78-70 win over Werribee in the Bowls Victoria division 1 at Chirnside Park on Saturday will represent a turning point for his young team. It has been a struggle in the early rounds, but Sports returned to the winners’ circle for a second time this season after picking up their first road win of the campaign. Not only did it give Sports much-needed momentum, but it moved the second-last side to within a point of Werribee in the standings. Sports have a winnable game against bottom side Preston-Reservoir next up, so they could be out of the relegation zone by Saturday evening. “In the pre-match talk, I said to the boys it’s like a mini-final for us,” Maxwell said. “To get a win away from home, playing at Werribee, is huge. “Some sides are probably out of our range, but the likes of Werribee and Preston-Reservoir and teams like that, they’re the ones we’ve got to win. We’ve got Preston this week, so if we can get two in a row it will give us a bit of confidence in the team.” Altona Sports claimed two rinks over Werribee with Maxwell’s 14-shot victory

enough to get the visitors over the line. Pat Delli claimed the other winning rink for Sports, coming back from two shots down late to win by three. While Sports concede it is a rebuilding year with exciting but inexperienced players Peter
Puopolo, Steve Baker, Rob Grierson, Dave Kanizsay, Sean Vogele, Peter Horton and Ethan Koek finding their feet in the top grade, they won’t rule out a late run to the finals. “There’s no way known we’re putting the cue in the rack saying we can’t make it,” Maxwell said. “It’s about getting a bit of momentum and hopefully we can build on this win. If we get two in a row, who knows, you might get three, four or five in a row.” In premier division, Yarraville-Footscray leapt out of the relegation zone with a 97-60 crushing of Croydon at Francis Street. With three rinks up, the Bulldogs picked up 16 of a possible 18 points, enough to leapfrog Croydon on the ladder. The Bulldogs have a chance to make it back-to-back wins when they visit cellardweller Mitcham on Saturday. Altona coughed up top spot to Mentone in the top-of-the-ladder blockbuster at Civic Parade. The A’s picked up two rinks, but went down 76-68 overall. Next up for the A’s is a tricky encounter with Bundoora RSL on the road. Lance Jenkinson
Rams pay for mistakes By Lance Jenkinson Newport Rams interim manager Dean Anglin has described Saturday’s 15-2 loss to powerhouse Essendon in Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 as “death by a thousand cuts”. The Rams were outclassed in all departments at KC White Reserve as they struggled to overcome the loss of key personnel. “We were a little undermanned and sort of got exposed,” Anglin said. “They’re the benchmark of the league. They just keep pushing all day … if you make a mistake, they capitalise on it. “Unfortunately, we made a few too many mistakes and let them run away with it.” Newport is down two leaders, with playing manager Dean Malthouse overseas for work and Matthew Lawman out with a hamstring injury. This has given the Rams a chance to get more game time into their younger players. The Rams are a young side on the rise and have big ambitions. They are also an impatient lot. “As a coaching group, we’ve focused on making sure we’re ready for the next generation to come through,” Anglin said. “We don’t want to continuously be rolling through five-year plans – we want to be challenging teams in the next 12 months to put ourselves at the top.” What better learning curve than facing Essendon at their best? On this occasion, Newport was simply not up to the task – and only the best will suffice against the league leaders. “There’s a lot of positives out of what we’re doing at the moment,” Anglin said. “The year has been great so far and we’re really confident that when we’re on our game we can mix it with everybody. “We were just off the boil a little bit. “All credit to Essendon – they certainly outclassed us on the day. But we take a lot out of it – we can still use the game as a learning experience.” With a busy week ahead, including a mid-week contest with Fitzroy and a visit from Springvale on Sunday, there is no time for Newport to dwell on the loss to Essendon. “We’ve got to roll with the punches and get back out there and be ready to go again,” Anglin said. In division 2, Williamstown battered Port Melbourne 17-7 at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday to maintain its pursuit of the top four. The Wolves are half a game behind fourth-placed Sunshine ahead of a home clash with Upwey Ferntree Gully on Wednesday.

Toothless Dogs lose runfest Footscray Edgewater was brushed aside by Fitzroy Doncaster in a seven-wicket loss at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. After setting a competitive 233, the Bulldogs claimed the early wickets of Noah Korkolis and Nat Vardi to have the Lions on the back foot at 2-25. Both wickets went to paceman Lucas Dredge, the in-form new-ball operator claiming 3-49 off 19 overs. The Bulldogs’ problem was that Dredge was their only bowler to claim a breakthrough. Six others combined for 64 wicketless overs. Fitzroy-Doncaster, on the back of an unbeaten century from Tim Sheehan (101no) and half centuries to Peter Dickson (55) and Liam Banthorpe (52no), passed the target three down in 86 overs. It was a significant victory for the Lions as it moved them above Footscray Edgewater on the ladder. The Bulldogs tumbled to sixth ahead of the Twenty20 section of the draw, which will have each club playing four games of the shortest format over the next two weekends. Lance Jenkinson
Bar set high for Altona In the battle of the two undefeated sides in sub-district cricket’s east-west group, Altona has had the challenge laid down to it by Balwyn at the Frank Kirk Oval. The A’s have been set an imposing target of 261 for victory, a score well in excess of anything they’ve been asked to chase this season. Despite four wickets from spinner Stefan Sidari (4-87), Balwyn managed to get off the leash on the back of a quick century from captain Liam Murphy (101) and half-century by opener Daniel Kiely (54). Altona will go into its run chase with a touch of confidence, its top order having fired in the opening four games. The A’s have easily the best runs-towickets ratio: 45.5 per wicket. Aaron Maynard has scored 229 runs at 114.5 and will need to feature if the A’s are to have a successful run chase. Williamstown has already wrapped up first innings points over a struggling Hoppers Crossing at Hogans Road Reserve. Lance Jenkinson
