Halfway house a no-go By Benjamin Millar A community backlash has forced the scrapping of plans for a West Footscray halfway house put forward by a developer with an extensive criminal history. Helmut Kirsch had lodged plans with Maribyrnong council for two nine-bedroom dwellings at 23 Alma Street in a joint venture with the property owner, local real estate agent Frank Forti. However, Mr Kirsch withdrew the plans following an anonymous letterbox drop drawing nearby residents’ attention to the proposal and inviting people to Google Mr Kirsch’s history, which includes more than 70 convictions and accusations of being a “slumlord”. Speaking to Star Weekly Weekly, Mr Kirsch accused Cr Catherine Cumming of orchestrating the

letterbox campaign. However, Cr Cumming said the leaflet was the work of concerned residents. Maribyrnong council has confirmed receipt of a letter which withdraws the application. The council has also received 34 submissions about the proposal. While some residents objected to the plans as an overdevelopment of the site, much of the uproar surrounded the prospect of the property being home to socially disadvantaged people, including ex-prisoners on parole. Objectors also drew attention to Mr Kirsch’s underworld links and criminal convictions. However, Mr Kirsch said he had been a victim of an unfair campaign that would ultimately harm vulnerable people. “There’s an enormous shortage of housing and we are taking a lot of the people nobody

prejudice by the planning unit” since fighting the council over a similar property at 633 Barkly Street about 17 years ago. Cr Cumming said she had “a long memory” and recalled Mr Kirsch taking on the council over that property. Landowner Frank Forti said he had entered the Alma Street venture with the best of intentions, pulling the pin as soon as concerns were raised. “My intention has always been to help the disadvantaged people and the troubled youth in the community”. An Alma Street resident, who asked not to be named, was relieved the planning permit was being withdrawn “in response to the very real growing concern about the proposed plans for the site’s redevelopment and the impact it would most likely have on the local family-focused community”.

Growth outstrips supply By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown has been ranked Melbourne’s second highest growth suburb, with median house prices soaring 18.7 per cent, to $1.35 million, in the September quarter. Latest data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria ranked Footscray at number four, with the median house price rising 14.8 per cent to $855,000. Altona North scraped into the top 10 with an increase of 12.2 per cent to $788,000. Only suburbs that had more than 30 residential property sales in the three months to September were included in the REIV’s ranking.

‘‘

Interest rates are still low, obviously buyers are still out - Joanne Royston

’’

RT Edgar director Joanne Royston attributed the strong growth to demand outstripping supply. “I think it all comes down to supply and demand across Melbourne and specifically … in Williamstown,” she said, adding that stock is down between 10 and about 30 per cent in some suburbs compared to this time last year.

“Because interest rates are still low, obviously buyers are still out and about,” Ms Royston said. “There’s just not the property for them to purchase. “Obviously, [it’s] creating that competition and pushing prices up.” REIV chief executive Geoff White said Victoria’s top growth suburbs were widespread across the city – from Seaford in the outer south east, to Williamstown and Werribee in the west. Langwarrin recorded the largest price growth, with the median house price increasing 20 per cent to $561,000.

Link Centre wins reprieve The state government has done an about-face and agreed to reinstate funding to keep open the Laverton Link Centre, which supports some of the most at-risk youth in one of Melbourne’s most disadvantaged areas. Star Weekly last month revealed that the centre was slated for closure in December after the government withdrew $300,000 funding. The centre has operated at the back of Laverton P-12 College since 2005, providing employment and education pathways each year for about 40 teenagers from mainly Hobsons Bay and Wyndham. Following our report, Jo Sexton Bennetts, a youth mentor with the Les Twentyman Foundation, started an online petition pleading with Education Minister James Merlino to save the centre. On Monday, a government spokesman confirmed in writing that the funding would be made available to keep the centre open. “Funding will continue to be available for The Link Centre operations to continue in 2017,” the spokesman said. “In that time, the department will consult with the centre and the local schools and community to ensure the best possible outcome for the students.” Ms Sexton Bennetts said she was “so excited that the government is continuing its support of this amazing facility and ‘at-risk kids’ in the western suburbs”. “I’m so proud our local community came together to fight this issue; it really is a win for the underdog,” she added. Rhonda Collins, manager of Altonabased youth homelessness service Latitude, had been at the forefront of organisations fighting to save the centre. “We must acknowledge the support of the community who made sure The Link Centre did not just disappear,” she said.

Mad Max factor fuels festival fun Some people draw inspiration from nature, others from industrial landscapes. Altona designer Alexandra Zvi has created a “Take Five” tank dress inspired by the Mobil refinery for this month’s inaugural Art & Industry Festival in Hobsons Bay. An industrial fashion event will launch the 10-day festival on November 18 at Williamstown Town Hall. “When I drive about, anything can inspire me,” Ms Zvi said. “I’m living in the western suburbs with a lot of industry about.” The “Take Five” slogan, emblazoned on the Mobil tank at the corner of Millers and Kororoit Creek roads, refers to the five steps taken to identify and control hazards in petrochemical workplaces. “You’re at the traffic lights and there you see the big hand,” Ms Zvi said. “I’ve always thought, wouldn’t that look fantastic on a T-shirt, wouldn’t that make a wonderful range of sportswear. “When the art festival came up I thought, oh my goodness I can actually put down on paper the ideas that come to my head when I’m in a traffic jam. “When you’re driving along in nature, it’s very easy to get inspired isn’t it? “But I love driving along at sunset and you see the Mobil refinery and it just looks like Mad Max.” Photographers will be invited to step out after sunset when the Mobil tanks and other industrial beacons are illuminated for another festival event, dubbed Western Lights, from November 18 to 27. Circus acts on birthday Footscray’s treasured Women’s Circus is chalking up its 25th anniversary with an exhibition and an ambitious take on a literary classic. An ensemble of 30 women will present an adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad at the Drill Hall later this month. They will be use the performance to explore the silencing of women’s stories and the prevalence of violence against women. Executive director Devon Taylor said the story resonated with the original purpose of the Women’s Circus, founded in 1991 to work with women who were the survivors of violence or abuse. While the organisation has since expanded to bring women of all ages, backgrounds

and experiences into the fold, Ms Taylor said it remained a welcoming and safe space for women to express themselves creatively. Coinciding with the performances will be an exhibition at the Footscray Community Arts Centre, where the story all began for the circus in 1991. Ms Taylor said it had been a monumental task to compile photos, stories and memorabilia for the exhibition. The Women’s Circus: Stories in Motion exhibition will open on November 17 at the FCAC Gabriel Gallery. The Penelopiad will be staged from November 22-27, including a gala night on November 25. Relief in sight for women in crisis By Goya Dmytryshchak With 20 new affordable housing units under construction at Newport, women and children escaping family violence, and women aged more than 55 on low incomes, may finally get some rental relief. The units have been funded from a $5.5 million grant awarded by the Victorian Property Fund to Women’s Housing Limited (WHL), a not-for-profit agency that provides low cost housing to women at risk of homelessness. WHL chief executive Judy Line said there is an acute shortage of community and public housing, particularly for older people.

“Say, for women who live in an area like this … they retire; if they’re in rental accommodation, they can’t afford to rent around here on a pension,” Ms Line said. “More and more people are being forced out of the areas where they’ve spent their whole working lives.” There will be nine one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom units built, with women charged up to 75 per cent of market rentals or 30 per cent of their household income. Ms Line said for many women, leaving family violence meant going straight into poverty. “There are many reasons as to why women stay in violent relationships, but the key reason is the affordability issue, being able to leave.”

All tenants will come from public housing waiting lists. Among them are Gail and her adult daughter Maddison, who have been having trouble making ends meet. “It helps us get on our feet,” Gail said. “Rental in Melbourne is extremely tight and high. “It’s just my daughter and myself, so we watch every cent.” Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz last Wednesday turned the first sod at the site of the new units. “We’re working to make a significant difference in the lives of women … by providing affordable, long-term housing in an area close to services and job opportunities,” she said.

Foodbank’s chilled out A Yarraville charity has taken the next step towards putting the freeze on hunger. Foodbank Victoria has installed a new $200,000 coolroom that will be a conduit for more than 2.7 million meals for people in need across the state every year. The new refrigerator and freezer have the capacity to store up to 250 pallets of fresh produce. The coolroom was funded by philanthropic corporate donors, who recently joined Foodbank Victoria chief executive Dave McNamara on an inspection tour of the new refrigerated addition to a Yarraville warehouse. The refrigerator and freezer were designed and installed by refrigeration specialists Oomiak. Oomiak project engineer David Lange said staff volunteering their time and

expertise included people from the company’s design, engineering, project management, installation and commissioning teams. “I was very proud to be able to support Foodbank; it’s a great way to contribute to the community,” Mr Lange said. Foodbank Victoria is a not-for-profit organisation assisting 500 charities in providing emergency food relief in the community. Benjamin Millar

Grandsons pay homage

Forgotten stories from World War I are coming back to life from the Footscray Historical Society archives. Artists-inresidence Karenne Ann and Tamara Watt (pictured) have been combing records to discover stories of Footscray’s wartime efforts. With support from Society secretary Carmel Taig and researchers Barbara Muster and Steve Wilson, they have uncovered “memorials, mementoes and memories of war” from the Ercildoune archives. Ms Watt said some colourful stories have emerged, including the tale of tragic Footscray Bulldogs’ fan and junior player Private Owen Hughes, who snuck his red, white and blue guernsey to the front and wore it while recovering in hospital. Karenne Ann said Footscray Historical Society has an exceptional collection. “There’s a treasure trove of history,” she said, and Ercildoune, a former bank built in the 1870s, has direct links to WWI. Ms Ann has discovered details of soldiers who lived near Ercildoune, and she will guide a walk around the block on Saturday to discover their homes. The free event is on Saturday, 10am until 12.30pm, at Ercildoune, 66 Napier Street.

Hundreds of schoolchildren will honour our Diggers on Remembrance Day, including three grandsons of Williamstown RSL president Bruce O’Brien who will wear their grandfather’s war medals. Conscripted in the draft, Mr O’Brien entered the army in 1967 and after a tour of duty in South Vietnam was discharged in 1969. Bruce’s father, Keith O’Brien, served in New Guinea during World War II, and his great uncle, Harold Carter, was killed during the Battle of the Somme.

Two other uncles enlisted from Williamstown – Lloyd Meehan, who served in the Pacific with the RAAF, and Bruce Meehan, who went down on HMAS Perth during the Battle of the Sunda Strait. “We have all been prepared to put our hands up when needs present,” Mr O’Brien said. “We are here to remember the sacrifice of our service men and women – not to glorify war or praise victors, but to remember those who have served our country during times of conflict and crisis, and to reflect upon their selfless sacrifice. “It is the anniversary of the day the armistice was signed between our Commonwealth and allied forces and the German invaders.” In the lead-up to November 11, Mr O’Brien has hand-delivered invitations to all Williamstown primary schools to attend the club’s commemorative ceremony at the cenotaph.

“This year, one of the schools asked if it would be OK if the children wore their relatives’ medals,” Mr O’Brien said. “It is something that is encouraged. The left breast is reserved for serving and former serving veterans and the right-hand breast is where relatives wear their relations’ medals.”

Mr O’Brien’s grandsons attend St Mary’s Primary School – the same primary school he went to as a boy. He said that each year more members of younger generations attended Williamstown’s Remembrance Day event, with about 400 paying their respects last year.

Lentil as Anything’s Laura Khanna is focused on the photo competition. (Damjan Janevski)

Snapshots of anything One of Footscray’s most cherished restaurants is launching a photo competition to help it stay afloat. Star Weekly earlier this year reported “pay as you can” restaurant Lentil as Anything was facing troubled times and needed a boost in support to keep its doors open. The not-for-profit restaurant is hoping to raise $500 through a photo competition, with entries to be collected in a photo book. Restaurant floor manager Laura Khanna said competition entrants need only take a photo portrait of someone at Lentil As Anything Footscray, be they customer, volunteer or chef. Entrants must then find out their subjects’ stories and what Lentil as Anything means to them, print the photos and hand them in with a paragraph or two about the subjects.

“Photography is a great platform – anybody with a phone can do this,” Ms Khanna said. All entries will be part of an exhibition at Footscray Lentil As Anything and made into a book, with the winner featuring on the front cover. “It’s a way to build the community as well and get everyone to know each other a little better,” Ms Khanna said. As well as submitting entries, people are being encouraged to support a crowdfunding campaign in which all donors of $50 or more will receive a copy of the Snapshots of the West book. New-look learning gains traction By Benjamin Millar A new junior high school campus would be created and Gilmore College for Girls would become co-ed under a radical shake-up of education in Footscray that has attracted a mixed response. Plans for a $15 million Footscray learning precinct, released last week, show three hubs that bring together early childhood education, Footscray City Primary School, Footscray City College, Gilmore College and Victoria University. The Victorian School Building Authority

plans follow years of agitation from parents of Seddon, Kingsville and Yarraville areas for a new high school to cater for spiralling demand. The plans include a new children’s centre integrated with a redeveloped Footscray City Primary School, extra junior secondary school places, and the conversion of the Footscray City College to a senior campus for years 10-12. A new science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning centre would be created by the Victorian government and Victoria University, and new sports and performing

arts facilities would be shared by schools and the community. Gilmore College for Girls would become a co-educational junior secondary school for years 7-9, and a second junior secondary school would be developed at the southern hub on Hyde Street. While some parents have welcomed the move to expand secondary school places in the inner-west, others have criticised the lack of a campus in the Yarraville area. There are also reservations about the loss of the western suburbs’ only state girls secondary if Gilmore College for Girls turns co-ed.

Melissa Horne, president of the SKYHigh lobby group, said the additional capacity and the partnerships outlined in the proposal are exciting for education in the inner-west. “This concept of the learning precinct delivers all … and more.” Education minister James Merlino said the new precinct will give the inner-west first-class education from childhood to university. Information sessions are on Thursday and Friday at Footscray market, next Wednesday at Yarraville pop-up park and November 19 at Yarraville farmers market. Further details: www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au/Footscray

First lesson: inclusion Williamstown North Primary School has been recognised in the Victorian Education Excellence Awards for its inclusive education. Principal Jim Cahill said that with an enrolment of almost 10 per cent, or about 70 pupils, on the autism spectrum, the school went to great lengths to have an embedded culture of inclusion. “Every teacher in the school has a snapshot of all of our children who are on the spectrum because we take a collective responsibility,” he said. The school is one of only a handful awarded accreditation by Amaze (formerly Autism Victoria). “I guess what sets us apart is that we have a dedicated space to support students. We call that our Butterfly Room,” Mr Cahill said. “It’s a quiet, supportive space they can go to if they need additional help or if the classroom

becomes too challenging at any point of time. We actually have one of our leading teachers as an inclusion co-ordinator so we’ve validated it to that level in our staffing, recognising that this is a dedicated role. “The cornerstone of what that inclusion co-ordinator does is run social skills groups for these students. “We know their Achilles heel is the subtleties of social interaction so we work really hard to skill them up in those areas so that they can engage successfully with their peers and build that connectedness. And then we work extremely closely with our families and other bodies beyond the school to build term-by-term learning plans for all of those students and they’re revised every term as to how students are progressing against their goals.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Fifty years of Glory Relive the glory days of the past five decades when Yarraville Glory Football Club celebrates its 50 year anniversary this Sunday. The club’s journey kicked off in 1966 when a group of friends got together every day after work for a kick in the local park, as they did back in Greece. With no local team to join, they decided to join the FFV … and Yarraville Doxa was born. Vice-president Jon Balakis said passionate board members, players and supporters still work together to keep the Doxa spirit alive. “Presidents in the past have stayed on the board for 20 years to ensure the survival of the club, which also included putting in their own money,” he said. “The woman’s committee, the majority made up of partners to players and

members, was also a key driver during the ’70s and ’80s to ensure the club’s survival.” Mr Balakis (president 2010-15) said highlights of the past 50 years include building the club’s McIvor Reserve home base, becoming All Australian Club Champions in 1981 and Women’s State Champions in 2005. Mr Balakis said the family-oriented club is the largest community based sporting group in Maribyrnong. He said the McIvor Reserve reunion at noon Sunday will follow the club’s AGM. “Please pop in and … share our history and, more importantly, how the club will be moving forward for another 50 years.” Benjamin Millar

A century of learning is being celebrated this month as Footscray City College chalks up its 100th anniversary. An art show and cocktail party launched proceedings on Tuesday night, while the celebrations will culminate in an ‘Open House’ featuring historic displays, music and a sausage sizzle from 1.30-3.30pm on Sunday, November 20. Long-serving media teacher Bill Lensky has witnessed countless changes in his 40 years teaching at the school. He says a spirit of support and camaraderie has underpinned his entire journey. Mr Lensky said that when he arrived in the 1970s to teach filmmaking at what was then Footscray Technical School, there was a high degree of illiteracy among students. “The camera was a magic way to get them to write,” he said. The doors of the Footscray Technical School opened in 1916, with about 300 students. In 1968 it became the Footscray Institute of Technology, which then divided into two separate entities, a school and an institute, on the same Ballarat Road site. In 1980, the school moved to its current Kinnear Street address and became co-educational, changing to its present name of Footscray City Secondary College in 1989. Mr Lensky said the technical school beginnings paved the way for today’s open and friendly approach to education, with a lesser degree of hierarchy between staff and

students than that found at many schools. “That has given it a strong sense of warmth with a high degree of informality,” Mr Lensky said. “I think that’s a core of the success; it’s a brilliant place to work.” Now 71, Mr Lensky is still at the college, enjoying introducing a new generation to filmmaking. While his early years were spent teaching the use of 16mm and Super-8 film to relative novices, he’s now finding students are arriving with enough core skills to create impressive work. “Twenty years ago, you used to have to teach visual literacy, but these kids have grown up in a soup of visuals,” he said. “Students don’t take notes any more. If I write anything up, they just come up at the end and take a photo of it.”

Child safe after car rolls over A young child secured by a car-seat safety harness was one of five people who escaped injury when a car rolled in a residential street in West Footscray on Saturday afternoon. Police and emergency services were called to Alma Road following reports of a car roll-over about 4.55pm. The five occupants of the car were uninjured in the incident. Police are investigating the cause of the crash. Benjamin Millar

Recycling at full bottle Peter Murphy says most people assume the used glass bottles they throw in their bin are recycled. But, he says, only about 60 per cent are given a second life while the rest go to landfill. The managing director of Derrimut-based Alex Fraser Group, which recycles construction and demolition materials for infrastructure and maintenance, said the company’s research and development arm had spent more than 12 years working out a way to better recycle glass. And the’ve come a long way. In a partnership with RMIT and Swinburne University of Technology, the group has devised a process that will turn discarded glass destined for landfill into sand that can be used to build roads. “I think Melbourne should be pretty proud of this,” he said. “In other parts of the world,

they’ve completely given up on recycling glass. But last year we took 141,000 tonnes [of glass] and were able to use it for roads,” he said. The company plans to increased its glass-tosand output next year. Its partnership with universities is one of seven the state government is funding to find new uses for materials that can’t easily be recycled, such as plastic bags, lolly wrappers and glass bottles. The company, which has facilities in Epping, Laverton North, Clarinda and elsewhere around the nation, will share in $640,000 of state government funding to create valuable products that will develop and expand markets for recovered crushed glass and flexible plastics. Ukuleles for Bangladesh Children living in the slums of Bangladesh will this month be strumming some ukuleles made at Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed. Newport Fiddle and Folk Club president Michael Stewart will hand-deliver the instruments to a school in Dhaka, accompanied by folk club and Men’s Shed member, Kerry Duke, who made the 10 ukuleles going over. It was a chance meeting while teaching overseas that led to an ongoing partnership between Dhaka and Hobsons Bay. In 2009, Mr Stewart was teaching MBA subjects for Victoria University when he met local teacher Dino Halder, who had established the Friends of the Poor People School for slum children. “The school is in the middle of one of the slums, and the visit broke my heart,” Mr Stewart said. “He had 30 children learning on a crowded

concrete floor, and a group of mothers – 13 and 14 year-old girls who had been ‘married’ and then left when they were pregnant. “I immediately knew that I would support Dino in his work, so I offered to pay his rent for five years.” By 2014, the school had 140 students. Mr Stewart asked Mr Duke if he had any ukuleles. Mr Duke gave him one he’d made and another from a Newport op shop. Last year, Mr Stewart raised enough to set up a music program at the school, which he had financed to move to a bigger and better location. Mr Duke sent over another five instruments. Mr Stewart said students now have such good musical skills he plays ensemble with them. Goya Dmytryshchak

$1.8b roads revival plan By Charlene Macaulay

on the upgrades are slated for early 2018 and would be completed by the end of 2022, with the specific projects to be staggered over four years. It will not be known what order the works will be completed until the contracts have been awarded.

Seven of Wyndham’s busiest roads will be duplicated and widened over the next six years in a mammoth $1.8 billion state government upgrade. The state government has called for expressions of interest for eight “high-priority” road upgrades spanning nearly 30 kilometres, and including: • Widening Dunnings and Palmers roads from Point Cook Road to the Princes Freeway. • Duplicating Palmers Road between Princes Freeway West and the Western Freeway with two lanes each way, including the realignment of Palmers Road across Sayers Road. • Duplicating Derrimut Road between Sayers and Dohertys roads to provide two lanes in each direction. • Duplicating Leakes Road between Fitzgerald and Derrimut roads to give two lanes each way. • Duplicating Dohertys Road between Fitzgerald Road and Grieve Parade, from two lanes to a four-lane divided carriageway, including a bridge duplication. • Duplicating Dohertys Road between Foundation and Palmers roads from two lanes to a four-lane divided carriageway. • Duplicating Forsyth Road to four lanes, including realigning Forsyth and Old Geelong roads, and widening the Forsyth Road bridge. • Constructing new westerly-oriented entry and exit ramps from Princes Freeway West to Duncans Road and replacing the existing bridge over Princes Freeway West. A state government spokesman said works

The spokesman said the suite of works was chosen based on numbers of road users, population growth and the benefits to local communities, while the business case suggested the upgrades would deliver a high return on investment. Premier Daniel Andrews said this was “one of the biggest ever projects to update suburban arterial roads”. Wyndham council chief executive Kelly Grigsby said she was thrilled with the announcement. “Our residents continually tell us that traffic congestion and transport related issues are their highest priority,” Ms Grigsby said. “This investment in Wyndham’s road network is critical. “The state government has indicated that feedback on designs for the upgrades will be sought, and we will of course be encouraging works that will create maximum benefit for Wyndham commuters.”

AFL deal for footy novice Meet Werribee’s newest AFL recruit. Aliesha Newman has been signed by Melbourne Football Club as the third and final free agent in its inaugural women’s squad. The 21-year-old, a Western Bulldogs supporter, has never played competitive football, but has a strong sport background. She plays soccer for Calder United and has competed in cross-country and track and field championships through Western Athletics and in all-school competitions. Newman trialled for Melbourne earlier this year “for a laugh” and, despite receiving a call back, didn’t think too much of it when she didn’t make the cut and also missed out during the draft.

“We were told if we didn’t get picked in the draft, there was still three free agent positions,” she said.“But I thought, straight up, my chances were gone because I don’t play footy. “Then the coach called me and told me I was in contention for the last free agent position – and I was like, really? “He asked me to come down and have a kick so that he could see my skills one-on-one. It all happened really quickly … I still can’t believe it.” Newman, who works as a postie for Australia Post, will start pre-season training with the Demons this month. Charlene Macaulay

MY PLACE West Footscray sculptor and furniture designer Jos Van Hulsen tells Benjamin Millar he gets a real buzz seeing faces light up as they watch his kinetic Christmas windows. connection

with

West

We moved to West Footscray in 1996 – I can’t believe we have been here for 20 years. We moved from Richmond where we had first set up our business, Post Industrial Design. Like a lot of people, we sort of ended up here by default really. As soon as we arrived, we knew we’d found ‘our place’. We wouldn’t move for quids, we love everything about the west.

recycled, I became obsessed with reusing discarded industrial pieces. It always struck me as strange that people could discard objects of such beauty. We set up our first shop in Richmond in 1995 and I quickly learnt that I could not sustain the business through making purely sculpture. I started looking at ways of working my craft into everyday objects. When I first started doing this, I was a little frowned upon by the art community. Times have changed and many sculptors also design furniture, and it is pretty accepted.

(Joe Mastroianni)

What is your Footscray?

What do you love most about the area?

What is the most rewarding aspect about doing your Christmas windows?

I love the sense of community here, it is like nothing I have experienced in Melbourne. The west is old-school – you say g’day to people you pass on the street, you know your neighbours and help each other out when you are in a fix. Footscray has so much diversity in terms of culture and food, you can get the best meal for almost cheaper than cooking it yourself. I love the grungy side of Footscray too. It is such a melting pot of people, but somehow it seems to work. People over here seem to embrace difference – it is such a rare and lovely thing. The area is going through such change that I hope it still finds room to embrace the old. What are your favourite local places? I guess I am a bit of a loner and love walking around the less worn paths. I often take my dog Brandy for walks under the West Gate Bridge, explore old abandoned factories or walk along the creek in Sunshine. I love fossicking around railway lines and discovering treasures, which I use in my sculptures. My wife Mary is always

It brings me back to my childhood and my obsession with model making as a kid. It is nice to work on something that is playful and not so serious. The art world can sometimes take itself way too seriously, it is great to work on something for the pure fun and the joy of it. It gives me such a buzz to see kids’ and adults’ faces pressed to the window. What are some of the most unusual things you have created?

complaining: “Can’t we for once just walk along an easy path”. Often on our adventure walks, we get stuck and have to slide down a big ravine to get back home. The kids always love the adventure of it, but Mary is less sure. I am also a big skater, so I spend a bit of time at the Newport skate park or cruising the streets.

How and why did you become involved in furniture and sculptural design?

Oh that is a hard one – I have made loads of things that could be considered unusual. I guess I use a lot of unusual objects in making my creations.

I initially started studying industrial design, but soon knew it was not for me. I transferred over to sculpture and felt like I had found my thing. My work is inspired by old industrial objects. Coming from Holland where everything was

With a 10-minute city commute and Middle Footscray train station 200 metres away, this double-storey abode, on about 410 square metres, has plenty going for it – whether as an investment (potential rental of $600 to $650 a week) or permanent home. White wall paint and glossy white floor tiles combine with black-framed picture windows, translating to lots of natural light and an on-trend look. Four upstairs bedrooms wrap around a good-sized living area, the main bathroom and separate toilet. The huge, floorboarded main bedroom has a built-in wardrobe and an open, all-white en suite. Along with an open study, there’s an open-plan living area downstairs including kitchen with two-toned cabinetry, stone-topped island bench, window splashback and all mod-cons. The family sitting zone opens to an integrated pergola, and the double garage has internal access.

A couple of blocks back from the waterfront and within steps of popular shops, schools and trendy eateries, this stylish townhouse has location all sewn up. Light-toned floorboards are laid throughout, except for the sitting area in the spacious living hub, which has a pitched plaster ceiling. The downstairs main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and glossy en suite; two upstairs share a bathroom – one with built-in wardrobe and balcony access; and the other with a walk-in. The kitchen has latte granite benches, matching tiles and all the mod-cons. The separate laundry includes a toilet. Plantation shutters are a classy touch. French doors open to a timber deck and paved area. Ducted heating and cooling, a garage and driveway space for one car are other features.

A prestigious address facing Greenwich Reserve, the Yarra River and the bay puts this townhouse in a million-dollar-plus locale, ideal for a switched-on family. After entry, the ground floor opens into a large carpeted lounge room, then via double doors into the cooks’ domain; there are a laundry and powder room tucked off to the sides. The kitchen has white cabinetry, soft green laminate, and plenty of storage. Upstairs, there are three bedrooms and a main bathroom with a shower and separate bath. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, decor again in off-white and soft green. From the meals area, a large glass door opens onto flagstone pavers, and a courtyard garden tucked under the tree canopy. There’s also a leafy communal lawn and garden area with space to kick a footy. There’s a double garage, if you can get in the car to leave this special spot.

First-home buyers, downsizers and investors are likely to vie for this well-appointed townhouse come auction day, not least for its stellar location – within walking distance of schools, Millers Junction shopping precinct, parkland and Bay Fit Leisure Centre. A white-on-white colour palette emphasises light, and charcoal benches and grey carpet add contrast. Inside the front door, there’s a fitted study area, with sleek shared bathroom and two bedrooms further along the tiled hallway. The family-meals area adjoins the kitchen, which has stone benchtops and stainless-steel cooking appliances. The laundry is separate. Glass double sliders open to an uncovered pergola, with a timber deck and an integrated barbecue adding their bits. Other perks are ducted heating, evaporative cooling, solar HWS, a lock-up garage and driveway parking space.

WILLIAMSTOWN 139 Cecil Street, 3016 Raine & Horne: 9397 6167

Reserve price: $2.1 million

In the 19th century, Hobson Bay mayor John Morgan lived a fairly privileged existence during his mayorship, his stay at No.139 a respite from administering the booming port that was Williamstown. Impressive for more than its former residents, this late-1880 Victorian splendour on a block of 760 square metres is an exceptional example of the period’s architecture. One gets the feeling that everything to do with the residence has been perfectly orchestrated by the vendors; there’s a reassuring serenity. From the fragrant iceberg rose bushes beside the path to the front door, to the

beautiful fretwork, this house delivers on understated elegance with its acute attention to detail. The six rose bushes, weeping cherry and silver birch trees might be the first thing to excite your senses, but they herald a long list of pleasing features. Enthusiasts of Victorian style will be impressed by the extent of restoration of the sublime original features. Post-restoration, the ceilings still soar to a height of 3.3 metres and sash and bay windows are a delight, while arched entry ways, deep cornices, big architraves, Baltic floorboards, deep skirts and original door

knobs and light switches add to its period character. The four carpeted bedrooms off the hall have cast-iron fireplaces. The main has a deep walk-in wardrobe; bedroom No.2 gets double built-ins; and bedroom No.1, with bay window, is the one the kids will fight for. The all-white, tiled bathroom has chrome, designer tapware ramping up the sleekness. Renovations to accommodate a modern family leave no shortage of living space for entertaining, sitting, dining, relaxing and studying. The lounge room is the fourth room up the front; the cosy space has access to the main bedroom’s wardrobe.

But the split-level family-meals zone is where an extension added in 1999 takes precedence. The kitchen sits between two dining spaces and is equipped for the resident chef with marble and laminate benchtops, Gaggenau wall oven, Ilve cooktop and Miele dishwasher, timber cabinetry and walk-in pantry. The rear meals and family area get the northern light and open through timberframed bifolds to a covered, paved area. The backyard has been kept immaculate, though there’s potential for further development. Eleanor Tabone

59 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 9, 2016

SPORT Pitcher the heart of Rams performance Another sterling pitching effort from Jimmy Jenson has guided Newport to an important win over Moorabbin in Vic Summer League division 1 baseball. The star pitcher threw the whole game for the Rams on Sunday. Despite giving up two runs early, he was instrumental in Newport claiming a 10-3 win and that keeps the team second in its conference. Senior assistant coach Dean Anglin said Jenson’s effort was appreciated by the Rams’ roster. “He’s a workhorse and we love the work he does,” Anglin said. “Jimmy just has absolute heart and wants to go out and compete at every opportunity – so we’re not going to hold him back.”

Jenson threw 126 pitches across the match, but while it took 26 pitches to get out of the first, he got better as the match wore on, with his final three innings amounting to just 25 pitches. On the offensive side, Newport got on the scoreboard via a three-run home run from Matt Lawman in the second, starting a trend of strong hitting throughout the day. The Rams hit five doubles as they consistently crossed the plate to control the contest and keep extending their lead. “It was exactly how you want to play baseball,” Anglin said. “You don’t want to rely on a big innings – you want a consistent effort across the day, and that’s what we got. Moorabbin have been heading up the other conference – a lot of teams

in our conference haven’t been able to get wins against them. “The win puts us in a strong position and really solidifies our strong start to the year.” Sunday marked the start of a busy stretch of five games in three weeks for the Rams, with every win important to ensure they hold on to a top-two place in their conference. “It’s a tough stretch for us, but we’re in pretty good shape,” Anglin said. “With Jimmy pitching a full game, it means we’ve got all the rest of our pitching up our sleeve for the rest of the week. “His efforts not only helped us win this game but will give us a better shot in others, as well.” Ewen McRae

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The

local footy transfer window has opened for the first time at this time of year and, as I wrote a few weeks back, I think it’s a good thing. There has not been a lot of movement yet, but I would expect that to change in the next few days. Altona premiership player and former coach Josh Russo is moving to Coburg Districts in the EDFL, and Troy Kelm does not let the grass grow under his boots, moving from Albion to St Kilda City in the Southern League. That will be a blow to new Cats’ coach Chris O’Keefe, though he might be bringing a ruckman from his old club with him. The points system and the salary cap will eventually slow down the market place. I wonder about some players and what motivates them. I do feel sorry for those who are only chasing the money. I understand it, but think that at some stage they will regret making a decision based entirely on the size of the pay packet. This is local footy, so it is never going to be your livelihood. Watching the likes of Port Colts, Spotswood and Altona win premierships has been all about a group staying together and achieving success, and then sharing that success with lifelong friends. It is something to savour … something so special money can’t buy it. Fortunately the days of buying premierships are drawing to a close at every level of all sport.

■ It

might be early days in the current season, but the battle for the first X1 club champion at Yarraville Club Cricket Club is hotting up already. All-rounder Adam Contessa, a former Western Bulldog, is playing like as bulldog with both bat and ball, notching up 40 and taking four for 11 with the ball, plus two run-outs and a catch. Wyndhamvale Falcon footballer James Damjanovski is another contender, taking four for 21 and scoring 34, while keeper Ben Tupper was 56 not out with three catches and a stumping to his name. Needless to say after the first two big wins, the Clubbers are well on top of the ladder. Keeping the theme of footy players going well in the whites, Matt Dean has two 50s already for Werribee in the subbies.

Clubbers wrap up victory By Ewen McRae Yarraville Club strengthened its grip on top spot in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior division with a comfortable outright win over Airport West St Christophers on Saturday. Already in a powerful position after skittling the home side for 62 last week, Yarraville Club piled on the runs early on day two to set up a massive first innings lead, declaring at 8-255. It was an innings of solid contributions all round, with five players scoring 30 or more runs in a good sign for the depth of the batting order. Joseph Blake (34), Justin Baker (31), Adam Contessa (40) and James Damjanovski (34) were all important throughout the day, but it was a belligerent knock from keeper Ben Tupper that set up the declaration nicely. Tupper hit 11 boundaries and a six on his way to a rapid 56 not out, allowing the side to

declare with a lead of 193 and plenty of overs to try and go for full points. In the end, the Clubbers needed less than 30 overs to wrap up the outright win, with wickets tumbling rapidly after a second wicket stand of 41. Will Sheridan blew away the top order to finish with 4-41, as the hosts lost 9-42 to be dismissed for just 92 in their second innings, Damjanovski cleaning up the tail with 4-21. The win sees Yarraville Club with an early season 10-point lead on top of the ladder. In north west games, Altona North fell short chasing Keilor Park’s 199 from day one, but came good with the ball late in the day to salvage some important percentage. A steady stream of wickets early in the day cost Altona North a genuine shot at chasing down the target, but the bright point of the day was keeper Haydn Wilkinson, who registered a stylish 50 as the home side was dismissed for 143.

60 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 9, 2016

This meant the hosts had to bowl again, and they made the most of the opportunity as Sandeep Mandalika snared career-best figures of 6-22 in keeping the visitors to 8-81 declared. With the exception of Keilor Park opener Ethan McShanag (46), most visiting batsmen struggled for runs, at one stage losing 6-8 before the declaration. Altona North finished on 2-24 off four overs late in the day. Footscray United came out of their clash with Aberfeldie in bad shape, narrowly avoiding an outright loss as Aberfeldie hit them to all corners of the ground. Paying for being dismissed for just 76 last week, Footscray United spent much of Saturday in the field, as Aberfeldie made 2-218 declared in just 44 overs. United fared better, with captain Andrew Ford making 58 in their second innings total of 182. This left Aberfeldie with 41 to make off three overs. They finished on 2-29 and had to be content with a first innings win.

■ The

SPORT

Altona rules the T20 waves as Maynard mauls Melton A superb knock from Altona opener Aaron Maynard guided his side to a good win over Melton as sub district cricket moved into T20 mode at the weekend. Maynard was the backbone of the Altona chase, crafting a stylish and unbeaten 78 as Altona hauled in Melton’s 6-130, with two balls to spare and seven wickets in the shed. It was an important knock after losing opening partner David Kinsella without scoring. Maynard was able to build two match-winning partnerships of 57 and 67, with Shane Jones (15) and captain Adam Yates (32) respectively, guiding the side home. Earlier, a great fielding performance from Altona kept the Melton run-scoring in check,

and ensured an achievable target. Yates grabbed three run-outs at crucial times, while Jake Cullen, Shannon Clarke and Stefan Sidari all claimed one wicket, with only Melton opener Ben Macrae (53) going on to post a big score. In other games, Williamstown batsmen Brent McMinn and Craig Sheedy again provided the bulk of the runs as they took the points over Box Hill in their T20 clash. Batting first, Williamstown posted 5-133 from their 20 overs, with McMinn (32) and Sheedy (48 not out) enjoying a 42-run partnership to set up the total. In defending their total, the Willy bowlers hunted as a pack and got the rewards early as

the home side slipped to 4-35 and looked out of the contest. Patrick O’Malley (3-11), Bryce Preston (2-32) and Sheedy (2-12) were all important, and Box Hill fell to 8-66 before staging a late fightback. Mustangs’ number 10 Steve Wotherspoon clicked into gear with 41, but it was too little too late as they batted out their overs to close on 9-114. Yarraville fell to a third straight loss, going down to Werribee by eight wickets after failing to capitalise on a strong start with the bat. In perfect batting conditions, Yarraville openers Matthew Love (36) and Matthew Harrison (49) got off to a great start with a 70-run stand.

But they struggled to hit the boundaries to keep the run rate up. Captain Nathan Allen (34) made some handy runs late in the innings to push the home side up to 3-144. When their chance came with the ball, Yarraville knocked over Werribee skipper Tim O’Brien early, but from there they struggled for penetration as the visitors pushed towards victory. James Freeman (66) and Matthew Dean (62 not out) batted beautifully as the hosts claimed one more wicket, with Werribee taking the win with four balls left, condemning Yarraville to a winless opening month. Williamstown scored an important win over Upwey Ferntree Gully in division 2 Vic Summer League baseball action on Sunday, scraping over the line by a single run. The 4-3 win was set up by Jarryd and Kile Rogers, who each got two hits to help keep the scoreboard moving, while Jason Lester did the majority of the pitching and kept the game tight. The win, the Wolves’ fourth from seven games, keeps them in the hunt for a top-four position. Footscray’s up-and-down start to the women’s Vic Summer League division 1 season continued on Saturday when it fell to powerhouse Doncaster to sit 3-3 after six games. Coming off the bye, Footscray could not match the hitting power of the home side, going down 11-4. The Dogs’ first loss since round three – when they last played Doncaster – has them sitting fifth on the table. The Dogs’ seconds had a bye in division 2 and are second on the ladder.

Dogs pack in dual wins By Ewen McRae Footscray Edgewater enjoyed a perfect weekend, clinching their first two-day win of the Premier Cricket season over Melbourne Uni on Saturday, before grabbing a one-day win over Dandenong on Sunday. On Saturday, the Dogs were defending their 6-360 declared from the previous week; they started well, with veteran Lucas Dredge dismissing the top three batsmen to reduce the home side to 3-38. The Dogs’ bowlers hunted as a pack to keep the scoring in check, and an extra wicket to Dredge and one to Hamish Winter-Irving had the hosts in trouble at 5-86 at lunch. From there the Students mounted a fightback through Tom Rogers (34), Liam Scammell (59) and William Shute (93 not out).

They started to whittle down the target, but it would prove a mountain too high, as the wickets kept falling before the home side could mount a meaningful challenge. The Students were eventually bowled out for 269, with Dredge, the standout bowler on the day, finishing on 5-76 off 17.5 overs, while Hayden Butterworth did his bit with 2-17. The day in the field clearly didn’t tire the Dogs’ batsmen for their game the next day, as they rattled along at a run a ball against Dandenong. Much as it was on day one against Melbourne Uni, it was Dean Russ and Greg Munro who did the bulk of the damage with a commanding 143-run opening partnership. While Munro fell short of back-to-back hundreds, finishing with 77 off 91 balls, Russ went on to smash his second hundred of the

season, at the rate of a run a ball, 142 not out. The Dogs’ star batted through the innings and shared strong partnerships with Matthew Underwood (59) and Winter-Irving (18) as the visitors posted 5-302 off their 50 overs. Winter-Irving started the defence well for the Dogs, dismissing Dandenong captain Tom Donnell for a second ball duck, and while most Panthers’ batsmen made starts, none went on to post a big innings, as Russ did, to ensure a successful chase. Brett Forsyth made 74 and former test player James Pattinson 66, but every Dogs’ bowler was able to make a breakthrough in what was a great team bowling effort. Winter-Irving (2-36) and Butterworth (2-47) were the only multiple wicket-takers as Dandenong closed on 8-277. The two wins pushed Footscray Edgewater up to third on the table after six games.

The Altona Roosters were last week announced as recipients of a CommBank Cricket Club Sponsorship, with the Commonwealth Bank presenting the club with $2000 to assist with equipment and merchandise. The sponsorship includes an identical commitment for next summer. Chris Butterworth, branch manager of Commonwealth Bank Altona, said CommBank was delighted to lend its support to the Roosters. “It’s great to be able to help the Altona Roosters Cricket Club because we know they do an excellent job in supporting local cricketers,” he said. “They are clearly very worthy recipients of our sponsorship and we’re thrilled to have established a partnership with them.”
