Revamp hope for hospital Rundown Footscray Hospital should be refurbished or rebuilt within 15 years, according to a new infrastructure blueprint for Victoria. The report by independent advisory body Infrastructure Victoria is a 30-year vision for the state that includes plans for road and transport upgrades as well as improvements to ageing facilities. It recommends that the state government respond to the aged conditions of the Footscray, Royal Melbourne and Alfred hospitals by completing a major refurbishment or new facility construction of one or more of the hospitals within 10 to 15 years. “This will be required to efficiently support the delivery of specialist and complex statewide health services and meet the needs of rapidly growing inner-city populations,” the report stated. The recommendation has been welcomed by Western Health, which has been pushing for demolition and redevelopment of the hospital’s south block and ageing emergency department. A briefing document prepared for the state government in 2014 warned that more than $300 million needed to be spent at the hospital to keep up with growing demand. Western Health chief executive Alex Cockram said the organisation would like work to start as soon as possible. “The facilities in a large part of Footscray Hospital are among the oldest in the metropolitan area without a major upgrade and this presents

considerable challenges,” Associate Professor Cockram said. Western Metropolitan Green MP Colleen Hartland, who has been lobbying for the hospital to be redeveloped, said Infrastructure Victoria had confirmed that fixing Footscray Hospital should be a priority.

‘‘

The government should be ashamed of the neglect

’’

- Colleen Hartland “The draft plan suggested three hospitals should be redeveloped within 10 to 15 years,” she said. “Given 73 beds in three wards at Footscray Hospital are already permanently closed due to disrepair, it is clearly in dire need and must be the first. “Footscray Hospital provides vital hospital services to the growing inner-west community. The government should be ashamed of the neglect and commit to fund the redevelopment now.” Health Minister Jill Hennessy said the government allocated $17 million in this year’s budget for urgent works and planning for the future of the hospital. “The planning work will ensure we have the right health services and infrastructure in place in Melbourne’s west so we can best meet the demands of our rapidly growing community,” she said. The government will respond to Infrastructure Victoria’s recommendations once it receives the body’s final report later this year.

Fines for drivers ‘failing to learn’ By Adem Saban A bigger police presence on roads across the western suburbs over the grand final weekend delivered worrying results, according to Victoria Police. Westgate highway patrol, which covers Wyndham, Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, issued 267 infringements as part of Operation Scoreboard, with drivers in Wyndham accounting for 205 of the offences. Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans, of Westgate highway patrol, said Wyndham being a

thoroughfare for people travelling to the coast for the long weekend could be the reason it was so highly represented in the statistics. Across the three police service areas, 10 people were caught driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, 35 drivers were apprehended for speeding, two infringement notices were issued for not wearing a seatbelt, 31 were found to be driving unlicensed or disqualified, and 13 were driving an unregistered vehicle. Seventy infringements were issued in the category of “other traffic offences”, which includes illegal lane changing, careless driving,

tailgating, and other driver-related offences. Sergeant Prentice-Evans said he was unimpressed by the number of people driving unlicensed or disqualified. “These people are unlicensed or disqualified for a reason. It’s concerning that they aren’t heeding the warnings they’ve been given and are still committing offences and being caught,” he said. “They aren’t learning.” He said the police approach to Operation Scoreboard was different to other campaigns. “The idea was to have a high-visibility police presence to deter people from committing

offences rather than detect them. We’re trying to stop the driver behaviour that leads to collisions,” he said. “That’s why we had a lot more ‘other’ offences than mobile phones or driving without a seatbelt.” Sergeant Prentice-Evans said the focus of the operation was on the Princes Freeway, the Westgate Freeway and the Western Ring Road interchange. He said that leading into the Christmas holidays, the highway patrol would continue to have a high presence on roads across the Westgate division.

Roller derby dynamos on show Roller derby enthusiasts will ‘jam’ on their skates and ‘pack’ the rink at RecWest Footscray next month to showcase the best of their sport. The West Side Derby Dollz league will hold a public roller derby scrimmage on November 13, giving people a chance to watch practice games for juniors and adults. The league, which has been running since 2010, includes junior, developing and bouting skaters teams. League member James Bone said perceptions of roller derby had changed in recent years.

“Roller derby used to draw crowds, with big, violent hits and showgirl-type costumes, but it’s taken a huge shift instead to celebrating and encouraging the athlete,” he said. “This is a sport where just looking pretty won’t get skaters very far, and each athlete puts in an epic amount of effort.” Mr Bone said scrimmage events were essential to help skaters develop their skills. “It often takes an athlete a long time to progress, from first being on wheels to a safe, confident and valuable team asset.

“This long training period is essential given that roller derby is a full-contact, often high-speed sport that would be an utter disaster were the athletes not properly prepared, trained and up to fitness,” he said. The league will also be running a bake sale and selling merchandise during the scrimmage event. It’s on from 10am until 3pm. Entry is $2. Details: pr@westsidederbydollz.org.au

Footscray is the car theft hot-spot of Maribyrnong, new data from the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council reveals. NMVTRC figures reveal there were 295 car thefts in Maribyrnong in 2015-16, up from 264 in 2014-15. In Hobsons Bay, 183 cars were stolen over the past financial year, while in 2014-15, 160 car thefts were recorded. Most cars were stolen for use in committing other crimes, joyriding or transport, not for their value, with vehicles later recovered. There were 212 short-term thefts in Maribyrnong and 128 in Hobsons Bay, the rest were profit-motivated. Footscray recorded 104 car thefts, followed by Maribyrnong (57) and Maidstone (53). Altona North recorded the highest number of thefts from Hobsons Bay (36). Laverton had 33 thefts while Newport had 30. The model of car most frequently stolen in both municipalities was Nissan Pulsars built between 1995 and 2000. Victoria police crime prevention officer Craig McDonald said older cars, such as Nissan Pulsars, were easy targets for thieves because they don’t have immobilizers. He urged owners to fit their cars with club locks or electronic immobilizers to deter thieves. “The door locking mechanisms on these cars are poor; there is no alarm and [thieves] know exactly how to steal them. If you know you might be a target, get a club lock, at least for peace of mind,” he said. Leading Senior Constable McDonald said it is important that people remember to lock their cars.

More gain from property sales By Adem Saban The vast majority of houses across the western suburbs are selling for large profits, recent data reveals. The quarterly Pain and Gain report, released by CoreLogic and seen by Star Weekly, reveals that Hobsons Bay property is hot – with a whopping 97.8 per cent of houses and units selling in that market making an average profit of $260,000 in the June quarter.

The combined profit for houses sold in Hobsons Bay was almost $77 million. About 2.2 per cent of properties sold in Hobsons Bay did not make a profit. They had a combined loss of about $1.5 million. The average length of ownership (hold period) on Hobsons Bay houses which made a profit is 9.7 years. In the neighbouring municipality of Maribyrnong, 92 per cent of sales made a median profit of $240,000, with a collective $65 million profit in just three

months. The average hold period in Maribyrnong is 9.7 years. Of the 7.5 per cent of properties sold that didn’t make a profit, the median loss was $26,000. Brimbank vendors have made an average of $200,000 on the 98.3 per cent of properties that drew a profit, with the average loss on the remaining 1.7 per cent being $25,500. The average hold period for a profitable property was 10.2 years. Just 2.5 per cent of Wyndham properties did not draw a profit, losing about $40,000

each. Of the 97.5 per cent of Wyndham houses that sold at a gain, an average of $107,000 in profit was made, with an overall quarterly profit of $58 million. The average hold was 8.4 years. In Melton, the selling of 97 per cent of homes and units left vendors $82,000 on average better off. Homes in Bayside, in the Victoria’s south, recorded the highest profits in the state, with 94.5 per cent of homes drawing an average profit of $557,000.

Ghostly dance parties Ghosts, zombies, witches and ghouls will take over Williamstown Town Hall on October 31 for two spooky Halloween dance parties. The haunted events have been organised by Williamstown resident Pauline Alabakis to raise money for disability service provider Yooralla. Ms Alabakis hopes the dance parties will bring the spirit of Halloween to the Hobsons Bay community while also supporting Yooralla’s work. “Kids are always looking for an occasion to dress up and I think there is a place for Halloween in the community,” she said. “I want to raise the profile of Halloween for families. “Yooralla is connected to the Williamstown community, so it made sense to support them in the same way they support the community.” The Halloween celebrations will begin

with a dance party for children aged five and under, which will run from noon-2pm. There will be a DJ, face painting, dancing and trick or treating. A family dance party, aimed at children aged 5-15, will be held from 7-11pm. Tickets to the parties cost $20 and $29. The school is one of nine across Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong that have signed up to be part of VicHealth’s Walk to School Month. The statewide event encourages children to get active by walking, cycling or scooting to and from school throughout October. Seabrook Primary School grade 4 teacher Helen Takano says most of the school’s 800 pupils are taking part. “It’s a great initiative to encourage our students to begin and continue healthy travel habits and spend more time with family and friends travelling to school,” Ms Takano said. “Being spring, it’s a great way to get our students out of the house and car to enjoy the sunshine.” Laura Michell

Mission ‘call to arms’ on poverty By Laura Michell Growing numbers of families and elderly people on the verge of homelessness are turning to Wesley Mission’s Footscray outreach service for help to buy food. Crisis and homelessness services acting manager Maidie Graham said that in 2015-16, there had been almost a 10 per cent increase in the number of people seeking help, compared to the previous year. Staff report that some of those seeking help are already homeless, while others are on the

brink of being so. They have also noticed an increase in the number of people sleeping in their cars or couch-surfing. Ms Graham said there had been 9000 requests to Wesley Mission’s Footscray service by people looking for food vouchers, help buying prescription medications, fruit and vegetables or wanting a no-interest loan. “It’s costing so much more to live now,” Ms Graham said. “If they are on Centrelink benefits or a low wage, if they don’t get assistance with food, they would struggle.

“They are on the edge of homelessness. A lot of people, through no fault of their own, live in great poverty.” To help those struggling with the cost of living, the organisation is hosting a barbecue on Friday, acknowledging anti-poverty week, October 16-22.

Ms Graham said community members in need of extra support are welcome to join in the Wesley Mission’s anti-poverty week activities. The Mission is also running a food drive, collecting non-perishable items, such as canned foods and toiletries, for those in need ahead of Christmas. Last year, close to 50 tonnes of food and groceries was donated to the appeal. The barbecue will be held at 310 Barkly Street, Footscray, from noon until 1pm, Friday. Keep an ear out for app The growling grass frog’s call is several short grunts followed by a long, deep growl that lasts for about a second. Melbourne Water is asking Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay residents to record calls, including those of the emerald green growling grass frog, using a new app launched just in time for its 15th Frog Census. Melbourne Water frog expert and Waterwatch co-ordinator Richard Akers said the census was conducted each year to help with conservation efforts. Local populations of the endangered growling grass frog can be found along the Maribyrnong River and Skeleton Creek and in Newport. “Because they are endangered, it’s really important we get as much information about these elusive frogs as possible,” Mr Akers said. “Growling grass frogs start calling at this time of year, and with recent rains they’ve been

heard in other areas around Melbourne. They get vocal in the warmer weather, so there’s a good chance you may hear them during a sunny picnic on the banks of the Maribyrnong.” Mr Akers is urging residents to download the app, visit their parks or local waterways and keep an ear out. “Every record helps improve conservation efforts,” he said. To download the app, visit melbournewater. com.au/frogcensus or call 131 722. Alexandra Laskie

Lessons for new parents A Footscray early-parenting support organisation will throw open its doors later this month to explain and demonstrate its services to new parents. Tweedle’s inaugural open day will be part of its Children’s Week celebrations, offering parents the chance to learn more about its support services. The centre, which has been operating in Footscray for 95 years, helps more than 4000 families each year. The open day will feature hourly tours of the centre, as well as a free barbecue, craft activities, music and reading sessions. Clinical services and nursing director Kirsty Evans says the open day will be a chance for

curious families to learn why Tweedle’s work is so important. “Many people don’t know we have 24 bedrooms here at Footscray or that our intake telephone support team speaks with over 80 families a week. Even the fact that over 20 mums, dads and their babies and toddlers stay with us every fortnight for between five and 10 days isn’t well known,” Ms Evans said. “Parents will be able to ask specialist Tweedle clinical staff questions about our programs.” The open day is Friday, October 28, from 1am-2pm at 53 Adelaide Street, Footscray. Walk on the wacky side Children will be able to view Seddon from a different perspective on Saturday as part of two guided “surrealism” tours through the suburb. Organised by children’s creative hub Little Creatures Collective and Wynter Projects, the 45-minute walking tours will take children to hidden pockets of Seddon to take in surrealist performances and projections. The tours are part of Little Creature Collective’s third birthday celebrations and will finish at a surrealist dance party. Organiser Chantal Wynter said the tours would visit four sites around the suburb, at which participants will be treated to performances from local artists or musicians. “It’s a wacky tour – it’s a different way of

seeing Seddon,” she said. “It’s a creative way of seeing Seddon from a child’s perspective.” Little Creatures Collective founder Beck Ferguson said surrealism helped children explore the impossible and illogical thoughts they conjured up in their imaginations. Dance party guests are being encouraged to dress up in the surrealist style. The tours start at 99 Buckley Street, Seddon at 9.30am and 11am, finishing at Seddon Uniting Church on the corner of Gamon and MacKay streets. Tickets to the walking tours cost $10, entry to the dance party is free. To attend either event, visit: bit.ly/2dLAASL Laura Michell

How did you blacksmithing?

in

Blacksmithing was a natural evolution for me. It’s something I’ve been interested in since I was a teenager. I spent a long time exploring and making things from clay, wood, stone and precious metal, but I eventually discovered that blacksmithing still has an important role in this age of disposable, machine-made goods. I leapt at the opportunity to do something that satisfied my appreciation for making things that last. What’s the best thing about being a blacksmith?

(Damjan Janevski)

The magic of being a blacksmith is that it’s a bit like alchemy. You take raw material, expose it to heat, air and water, and with a lot of careful hammering, you can create something really interesting and beautiful that will stand the test of time.

What is your connection with Footscray I had already clocked up some fond memories of Footscray prior to living here … so when the opportunity came to buy an old, rundown rabbit abattoir that was in dire need of repair, my partner and I didn’t hesitate to take on the epic task of deconstructing it and converting it into a place to live and work. Ten years later, I

can honestly say I’m glad we didn’t know what we were in for, otherwise I would have chosen a site that was far less challenging. What do you love most about the area? I love that Footscray is a crucible for arts and culture. There’s so much diversity in so many ways, which keeps things interesting,

but this is also changing rapidly. I hope the council maintains its support of artists and the different cultures in the area, and enables them to continue to contribute to the suburb’s future in a meaningful way. Do you have favourite local places? I enjoy going for walks with my family along the

Drumbeats from WWI A chance discovery in the Footscray-Yarraville City Band’s storeroom has led to the creation of a concert to commemorate local soldiers who fought in World War I. The band was clearing out its storeroom earlier this year when it came across an old bass drum. Upon closer inspection, band members found that the inside of the drum was inscribed with the names of World War I soldiers. Band member Colin Harrison said six soldiers had written their names in 1916 or 1917. “It’s incredible that almost 100 years later it turns up in our storeroom,” Mr Harrison said. “We think that in the 1940s or ’50s, the drum became surplus army stock and was bought by a civilian band.” After finding the drum, the band decided to

put together a special concert next month to honour local soldiers and the Anzac spirit. The concert will feature international performers Maggie Haggart, Nicholas Coghlan and Danielle Matthews, alongside the Footscray-Yarraville City Band. Past glory remembered The AFL landscape has changed since 1954 … but one thing remains the same – the sheer elation of premiership glory. Star Weekly looks to our predecessor, The Footscray Mail, to see how the Bulldog’s 1954 VFL premiership was celebrated. The Mail heralded the club’s first premiership 62 years ago as a “dazzling pennant win”, dedicating five pages to the Bulldogs’ success. The paper declared that the team was “never extended” in its match against Melbourne, and secured the flag with a “smooth-working team display”. “Jumping into their stride soon after the first bounce, the Bulldogs, with virile, enthusiastic all-round competence, took complete charge and never once looked like losing their grip,” a story on the front page said. “They thrilled supporters.” The paper also paid tribute to captain-coach Charlie Sutton. Reporter NIP wrote that Sutton had worked hard and constantly on the players to mould them into a united force. “Sutton, in every way, has developed into a top-class coach,” he wrote. “He is also a fine player, ideal as a leader because of his self-sacrificing way of going into play. “It is gratifying that he was able to lead his team into their auspicious win on Saturday.” NIP reported that during his pre-match address to the team, Sutton reminded the players that all of Footscray was waiting for the Bulldogs to secure their first premiership. Amongst the coverage was a list of 31 grand final highlights, covering everything from the fans’ celebrations after the final siren to the more than 200 telegrams received by the club, players, trainers and officials in the days before the game.

High-flyers have eye in the sky By Charlene Macaulay They’re the big boy toys taking the skies by storm. Drones are the latest must-have item for the tech-savvy and are increasingly being used for both recreational and commercial purposes. Add a camera and they can gather breathtaking aerial images and video. Essentially, it’s like a large-scale video game – except the controller is in charge of a real drone that is flying over a real world capturing real-time imagery. Anyone can own one, but they are subject to a host of aviation laws and you need a remote licence if you want to fly them commercially. Star Weekly speaks to four people about the rise of drones.

The business owner

Mark Playdon caught the drone bug a couple of years ago when a friend bought him a drone for Christmas. The Williams Landing resident crashed it inside his house a couple of days later then went out and bought another, attached a Go-Pro camera to it, and was hooked. These days, Mr Playdon runs Drone Addiction, an online store selling drones and drone equipment. He also takes aerial photography and videography for fun. Vision that he took of Trentham Falls caught the eye of Places Victoria, which republished his work on social media. “You shouldn’t fly any further than line of sight, he said. “You should still be able to see the machine – even though they can go much further than that. Mr Playdon’s drone – a DJI Inspire – has been decorated with black, white and grey camoflague stickers and retails for about $7000.

Mark Playdon puts a drone through its paces. (Damjan Janevski)

He said drones were particularly popular among men, admitting that he had yet to sell one of the devices to a woman.

The hobbyists

Mr Playdon is one of the members of the DJI Wyndham Owners Club. Its members get together once a fortnight to fly their drones and share tips.

Member Troy Hixon, 42, owns a DJI Phantom 3 and tries to fly it at least once or twice a week. “I had a friend come out from the UK who had one, and I took him around Wyndham and different places to take photos and he was doing some pretty good video, the Tarneit resident said. “It’s a nice little toy to have – an expensive toy, but it’s pretty cool. “You can get up high and get a good view of

things. I like taking photos anyway, so this is just another way of taking different photos. Werribee’s Brendan Gill agrees. “It’s something to do for myself – it’s good fun, the 48-year-old said. “I’ve always had an interest in photography, and this is just photography at a different level. “There’s quite a complex range of rules and regulations that you’ve got to stick by –

The real estate industry has jumped on the bandwagon, using drones to capture aerial photos and video to market properties. Samantha McCarthy, from hockingstuart Werribee, said the agency had been using drones recently to market “lifestyle properties”. The senior sales consultant said aerial images and videos gave interested buyers a good perspective of property sizes and their surroundings. Ms McCarthy said the videos had received a positive response among buyers. “I don’t tend to use it on every single home,” she said. “It obviously doesn’t suit every single property – but it definitely works incredibly well to highlight the features of prestige

A village vibe to relish right in the heart of beautiful Williamstown The Village Williamstown retirement village has once again thrown open its doors for its annual seniors festival with a schedule packed with engaging and fun-filled events. The village seniors festival, on Saturday, October 8, was aimed at showcasing the retirement village’s facilities and attracting new residents and guests. At the fete, visitors and residents enjoyed Devonshire teas or a sausage while browsing stalls of art and crafts, fresh produce and baked goods, plants and jewellery. Lendlease retirement living business Victorian regional manager Marcelle Wilson says coming to the event is a great way to get a feel for the village’s atmosphere. “I often hear residents say they wish they had made the decision to move to the Village Williamstown retirement village earlier,” Marcelle says.

With a choice of various types of villas, condominiums and penthouse apartments, the village offers something for everyone, she says. “The village provides residents with the flexibility to stay socially and physically active while remaining connected to the local community,” she says. Located near parks, the bay and beaches, and a short drive away from Williamstown’s CBD, Village Williamstown offers a secure and peaceful hideaway.

Designed by Seddon architect team Basset & Lobaza with the flair they’re known for, this house and pool package is in a great spot, within a three-minute bike ride of Willy beach, Botanic Gardens and Nelson Place cafes. The house has one bedroom downstairs, a study (or fourth bedroom) and a chic bathroom, while the large main bedroom (walk-in wardrobe and stylish en suite with tub) and another are upstairs. Also up here is a living room with double doors to north-facing rear balcony. The timber floored living hub downstairs includes the sleek kitchen – marble benches (including waterfall island bench), great storage, walk-in pantry, and Miele induction cooktop, dishwasher and warming drawer. Numerous split-systems maintain comfort; a 4kW solar system cuts bills. A timber deck juts across the backyard, the rest allocated to a glass-fenced pool and spa.

Revamped with panache to spare, this lovely period abode is in a fab, tree-lined pocket with both Seddon and Yarraville village cafe culture, as well as the train station, all within a short walk. Everything inside is stylishly contemporary, with a pearl-grey and white palette and floorboards throughout. Of the three ripper bedrooms, each with wardrobe, one has its original fireplace, while the other two have wooden storage seats in windows dressed in plantation shutters. The shared bathroom is uber-chic, with walk-in shower, freestanding tub and stone-topped vanity. The beautiful living hub has a fireplace and a picture window framing an atrium-style water feature; the all-white kitchen in here is as schmick as could be. Ducted heating and a split-system are seasonal comforts. Bifolds open right back to a dual-level deck which wraps around a pool and spa; tropical plantings add to the oasis.

This is a fab house for renovators to get their teeth into, and the block of about 600 square metres allows space to extend or even complete an entirely new build, subject to council approval. The well-presented, north-facing 1950s house has high, ornate plaster ceilings, picture rails and a tapestry-brick fireplace as heritage pointers. Two bedrooms share a fresh, older bathroom. There’s a lounge room with gas heater, dining room and rumpus room at the back. The kitchen is a good size and has an electric upright cooker; the laundry adjoins it, and there’s a toilet off the rumpus room. The property has a garage and is in a sought-after neighbourhood that’s handy to shops, parks, schools and transport, and within seven kilometres of the city.

Within a five-minute walk of Altona Gate shopping centre, this classic mid-20th century weatherboard is in a quiet cul-de-sac on about 585 square metres, which allows for an extension or redevelopment, subject to council approval. The house has three carpeted bedrooms that share an updated bathroom (pink rub retained). A carpeted lounge room has a gas heater set into the original fireplace, and the tiled eat-in kitchen has timber-veneer cabinetry and a gas upright cooker. The big backyard has a detached double garage, and a bungalow suited to home office or studio. West Gate Freeway access is three minutes away and a city-bound bus service is close by.

Property of the week

SEAHOLME 13 Esplanade, 3018 RT Edgar: 9399 9888

Price: $2.5 million+

Casting a prominent street profile on the iconic Esplanade of Seaholme this architecturally-designed house offers it’s new owners a “lifestyle”. The original brick house required “too much” work for the current vendors when they bought 16 years ago, so they demolished it, creating a 663 square metre blank canvas for their new dream house. The vendors say one of the things that drew them to the property was its enviable views across Altona beach to the city skyline. And the Jon Friedrich and Clayton

4

Auction: November 5 at 12.30pm Brown Architects-designed house takes full advantage of those views. On arrival, wrought-iron front gates open to a bluestone-paved walkway bordered by hedged garden beds of perfumed lavender. A sumptuous hallway beneath corbels, high ceilings with gutter cornices and polished floors provide a sense of luxury as you enter the house. The formal living space is a picture of elegance with its gas log fireplace, white marble mantelpiece, opulent Spanish imported light fittings, a La casa imported

mirror and limited-edition Spanish artwork. The dining area, also at the front of the house, is another grand statement with fresh white walls, white trim and sea views. The French provincial-style kitchen is a standout with Silestone benches, large amounts of storage with soft-closing drawers, a servery bar, 900mm double oven, integrated fridge/freezer, concealed double-drawer dishwasher and stone sink with ‘insinkerator’. The family area gets plenty of light through concertina doors.

In contrast, a theatre room gives the dramatic feel of being at the movies with deep, purple tones and heavy velvet curtains. The sound-proof room takes the cinematic experience to the next level with speciality recliners and separate temperature control. The backyard offers formal plantings and marble tiled paving surrounding the salt-water pool and spa. There’s also a built-in barbecue and outdoor bathroom. Eleanor Tabone

Williamstown 37 Osborne Street The Allotment, The Address, The Attraction Period character and present day comfort explain why its 36 years since this three bedroom, two bathroom home was last on the market. In addition, its deep, wide rear garden illustrates the attraction of a generous allotment on a tree-lined street so close to the bay that the sea breeze is an appealing accompaniment. Scope to renovate when ready, STCA, can be considered from today’s engaging proportions including central living and dining areas, a substantial separate kitchen and a family room that reveals the garden. The option to extend upstairs is inspired by the idea of bright new spaces with bay views, a prospect that further enhances the future of a residence with a rich family past. Walk to the beach, wander to the Botanic Gardens and reach transport, schools and Nelson Place in moments.

SPORT Altona’s Christmas wishes come early competition medal with Darley in the Ballarat Football League. That led to captaincy of the BFL team, which went down narrowly to the WRFL at the Whitten oval this year. “He’s obviously a premier player,” Ghazi said. “He also played all of his juniors through Altona as well … [it’s] really crucial to be able to get someone like him back. “He’s coming back for the right reasons; it’s his junior club.” Altona is now targeting extra depth in its ruck and forward stocks. Josh Rafferty and Jayden Post will return, but they’ll need a bit of help. The Vikings will recruit within their means, so don’t expect a blank cheque any time soon.

■ The

Lance Jenkinson Steven Kennedy returns to Altona to bolster its midfield. (Shawn Smits)

Waiting game for Magic By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic was eager to be promoted to the NPL and it deserved to be elevated to the realm of the state’s elite teams campaign after taking out the state league 1 title. But the Magic will be denied an immediate opportunity as the FFV waits another 12 months for a promotion-relegation system to kick in. The Magic is shattered at missing out on the chance of promotion, despite being the runaway champion of the north-west conference of state league 1 and then becoming the overall state league 1 winner in a 1-0 playoff final win over Mornington. Magic president Igor Georgievski concedes his club only has itself to blame for not applying for an original NPL licence. “It’s our own fault why we’re not there because we should’ve applied for it at the time,” he said. “We didn’t do it and now we’re really dominating state league and even NPL1, I reckon we would’ve done well there, too. “Nowhere in the world does this happen. Every club that ends up first gets automatically promoted unless it’s the top tier. “This is the only place where a club gets rewarded with nothing.” The Magic will not blame the FFV – quite the opposite. Aside from the disappointment of not being promoted, Georgievski says the federation has bent over backwards to help his club. “The FFV have been a great help to us,” he said. “They got teams to come and play finals series games at our ground.” With a promotion-relegation system being implemented between the NPL and state league next season, the Magic will get a belated chance to step up in class. It will not be easy for the Magic, with opposition clubs ready to re-load for that chance of promotion. “It is a bit of a struggle to stick to it again over 22 weeks,” Georgievski said. “You have to do it, you have to stay positive and keep the boys positive so we can achieve what we achieved this year. It will be bigger and better things next year.” Adamson Ajayi scored the winning goal for the Magic in the playoff final win over Mornington at Jack Edwards Reserve. The win sparked wild celebrations in the Magic camp on the day it farewelled club legend Slave Bozinovski. “It was emotional,” Georgievski said. “He’s an important part of the club. Guys that are club people like him want to be there until their last breath.”

IN THE DOGHOUSE ink had barely dried on his Deer Park premiership tattoo before Brendan Fevola announced he was moving on from the WRFL to take on a playing coach role with Melton South in the Riddell District Football League. Good on him – he has to pursue the best football future for himself, end of story. I don’t care about his reasons, nor begrudge him whatever dollars he is getting. Such is the nature of suburban football these days that changing clubs is becoming acceptable and more the norm, especially for players coming down a level or two. Former AFL star Mark Williams has relinquished his coaching role at Newport Power and Paul Chapman has moved on from Werribee Districts. Talk is that Adam Cooney will be at McLean Reserve next year in a Spotswood jumper; his son plays juniors there.

■ Werribee

Districts Football Club has appointed Chris Gilham to the senior coaching role. “Gilo”, a well-known footy identity, spent the past few years in a pivotal role with the Werribee Football Club senior panel. He is admired for his footy smarts and I have no doubt will have a very immediate impact on the Werribee Districts playing group. I asked last week if the club was in a better position now than 12 months ago. Club president Murray Smith contacted me to reply – he certainly thinks it is, both on and off the field. It’s sad to report of the passing of Jameel Sargent, a very popular player at the club in the past few years. The club and Jameel’s teammates deserve special mention for the support they showed the Sargent family during their time of need.

■ The

final chapter in my AFL grand final experience was played out last week when Bulldog staffers Jarred Hanks and Hana Williamson bought the 2016 premiership cup to my hospital room. I felt very privileged and honoured that the club went out of its way to make such a gesture. It was a great thrill to finally see the cup in the flesh, hold it, smell it (not bad). What an exciting time it is in the west with the attention now turning to the Spring Racing Carnival and the major involvement of the Werribee International Horse Centre. The overseas contingent’s entourages for each stable are housed right across the suburbs, but in particularly in Werribee. Make them welcome at our local eateries and venues – they might have a hot tip or two worth getting on. Kevin Hillier

Altona did not have to wait until Christmas to have its wish granted. The Vikings saw the need for another top line midfielder, and went and got their man. It took months of negotiations, but the Vikings lured their own premiership star Steven Kennedy back to Sugar Gum Drive. “To get him back to the club is a big signing for us,” Vikings’ coach Saade Ghazi said. “We thought we needed another midfielder, and he gives us another key midfielder. “He’s in the same age group as Jordy Robbins, etcetera,” Ghazi said. Kennedy has signed on as a playing assistant coach. In a role that fits like a glove, he will look after the midfield group. Kennedy was a solid contributor for Altona in its 2012 premiership. In the years since, he has undoubtedly taken his game to another level. He won two club best-and-fairests and a

Close contest spurs Dogs to step up in a tight scrap Footscray Edgewater got its Premier Cricket season off to a winning start on Saturday, though not without a few tense moments late in the contest against Frankston Edgewater. After round one was postponed due to poor weather, Saturday’s clash with Frankston became the nominal opening game, and it ended in a tight scrap, with the Dogs prevailing by 10-runs. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Footscray Edgewater got off to the worst possible start – key opener Dean Russ was trapped in front by Ben Ashkenazi for a third ball duck. Hayden Butterworth joined Travis Dean in

the middle and, together the pair steadied the innings with a 47-run stand before Dean fell for 26, followed soon after by Butterworth for the same score. With the top order gone, it was the middle order who stepped up and built a solid total, with a 127-run partnership between Matthew Underwood (48) and skipper Dylan Kight (75) doing the bulk of the damage. Kight was particularly impressive, scoring at a quick rate, largely through clever running and quick singles rather than punishing boundaries. Some late hitting from the tail pushed the total up to 6-222 off 50 overs, but it looked light

on when the Heat put on 69 for the first wicket, and looked in control early in the second innings. Jack Sheppard (1-43) finally got the breakthrough when he snuck one through Matthew Gapes’ defence, but the rest of the visiting top order batted around captain Luke Walker, moving to 2-150 before the game started to turn back in favour of the hosts. Jeremy Hart snared two quick wickets to halt the visitors’ momentum, before Lucas Dredge got the big wicket of Walker for 81, finally giving the home side the upper hand. Some tight late bowling was enough to restrict the Heat to 7-212, giving the Dogs an

early season win to kickstart their campaign. Reflecting on the game, Dogs coach’ Steve Chapman said it was good to bank an early win with a broad contribution across the team. “It was a good hit out, and everyone got to utilise one or more of their skills, which is nice,” he said. “We’re very grateful for the result, especially after seeing some of the scores across the weekend at other grounds. “We were maybe a bit too cautious with the bat … we probably wasted the new ball a bit, so there’s still plenty to work on ahead of St Kilda and Melbourne this weekend.” Ewen McRae

Sports shorts Premier second XI

Footscray Edgewater’s second XI were unable to emulate the firsts, going down to Frankston Peninsula by 86 runs in the opening round of Premier Cricket action. After losing the toss and heading out into the field, the Dogs were unable to contain Frankston opener Gordon Waterfall as he batted through the innings for a masterful 104 not out. This formed the backbone of a strong 5-252 total, with four Footscray bowlers snaring single wickets. In reply, the Dogs lost two early wickets before a 103-run partnership between Nicholas Donazzon (46) and Jakob Tidyman (50) got the chase back on track. Unfortunately for the visitors, it all fell apart after their dismissals, as the Dogs fell from 4-113 to be all out for 166. The Dogs will look to bounce back this Saturday when they host St Kilda in another one-dayer.

Bulldogs’ midfielder Marcus Bontempelli accepts his Charles Sutton Medal as Footscray’s best and fairest. (Supplied)

Top Dogs get their gongs By Ewen McRae Western Bulldogs’ young gun Marcus Bontempelli put the exclamation mark on a remarkable season last week, taking home his first Charles Sutton Medal at the Dog’s best and fairest count. The dynamic midfielder, who is still only 20 years old, finished 71 votes ahead of veteran defender Dale Morris to become the youngest winner since David Thorpe in 1968. It caps off an amazing season for Bontempelli, who received his first All Australian guernsey on the eve of the finals, and was a key player in the Bulldogs’ drought-breaking premiership. Reflecting on his win on the night, Bontempelli admitted he didn’t expect to have so much success so early in his career. “I wasn’t expecting to be standing up here this soon, but it’s all been worth it,” he said. “It’s been an incredible three years – it’s just been everything I thought it would be, and so much more as well.

‘‘

It’s important at times like this to smell the roses - Marcus Bontempelli a bit

’’

“Did I expect it to happen this quickly? No. But was I at odds with the fact that I didn’t think I was capable? Well, no, as well.” While still early in his career, he said winning a best and fairest in a premiership season ranked as high as anything he has achieved in the game. “There’s a bit of magic in the air at the moment, and I think it is important at times like this to smell the roses a bit,” he said. “I think apart from the weekend [grand final] there’s probably not a prouder moment for me than this night.” While Morris took home the Doug Hawkins Medal for his second place in the count, midfielder Lachie Hunter claimed the Gary Dempsey Medal for his third place finish, just

two votes behind. Liam Picken was announced as the club’s best player of the finals, while Josh Dunkley won the Chris Grant best first year player award. In other awards, Jordan Roughead was named most improved, Matthew Boyd won best team player, Tom Liberatore won most courageous, and Jaimee Lambert won the Susan Alberti award for her fine performances in the three women’s exhibition games. Popular ruckman Will Minson also announced that he and the club have decided to part ways after 191 games. The 2013 All-Australian player will explore free agency options before deciding whether to play on at a second AFL club. And in a fitting tribute to the 2016 premiers, coach Luke Beveridge revealed skipper Bob Murphy had returned the medal that Beveridge presented to him on the premiership dais, and it will now be donated to the Bulldogs’ museum to sit alongside the long-awaited premiership cup.

The fully-funded scholarship program for boys born in 2006 and 2007 is designed to give the playing group the tools it needs to develop better footballers. The squad will compete in the under 11s Kangaroos competition for 2017 season, also entering preseason and end of season tournaments, with a summer program also scheduled in the off season. Pennant bowls

Yarraville Footscray fell narrowly short of an opening round win when Premier Division bowls kicked off on Saturday. Hosting Clayton, Yarraville Footscray could only win one of the four rinks, despite strong performances from all bowlers throughout the afternoon. The final score of 2-69 to 16-73 exemplified how close the two clubs were, with one rink decided by just a single shot, and another by just two shots. Yarraville Footscray will now travel to Bundoora RSL for round two. Bundoora RSL also lost its opening round by just three shots, after it split the four rinks with Croydon.
