Hometown heroes By Ewen McRae It was a celebration 62 years in the making, and the sons and daughters of the west didn’t disappoint. More than 20,000 fans descended on the Whitten Oval on Sunday to celebrate after the Bulldogs had broken through for their first VFL/AFL premiership since 1954 with a stirring 22-point win over Sydney 24 hours earlier. While many were nursing sore heads after a night of revelry, nothing was going to stop the party as families from all over Melbourne sung and danced their way down Sutton Parade and into their spiritual home to welcome their premiership heroes to the stage. It was nearly 24 hours after the final siren, but many fans still had tears in their eyes as they joined the long queues into the ground.
Among them was Joan Adams, of Yarraville, who was just five when the Dogs won their first flag. “There was a part of me that thought this day would never come,” she said. “It still feels like a dream, but I’m just so proud of all the boys and everyone here who’s been through some tough years. This is just the best day ever.” The sea of red, white and blue continued to swell as merchandise stands did a roaring trade and smiling fans waited patiently for their heroes to hit the stage. Comedian and banner writer Danny McGinlay kept the fans entertained throughout the early stages before club president Peter Gordon took to the stage to thank the throngs for their support over a gruelling finals series. “On behalf of all of you I want to say how happy I am for what’s gone on in the last month,” Gordon said. “Congratulate yourselves, because
it’s a great thing to be Bulldogs supporters.” But there was one group of people everyone had come to see. Soon the premiership team was introduced one by one to the masses and showered with adoration. There were special cheers throughout. Young star Marcus Bontempelli got an especially large roar before Tom Boyd, who came of age in a match-winning display, had every member of the pack roaring. But the clear crowd favourites were spiritual leader Bob Murphy, who missed the game through injury, and coach Luke Beveridge, who had delivered the Dogs to the promised land in just his second season at the helm. The big screens showed a replay of the moment Beveridge handed his premiership medal to Murphy on the premiership dais, and the tears started to flow again in the crowd.

Tears of joy for two men who have meant so much to the western suburbs. “Bob has driven the emotional and spiritual side of our club for a long period of time,” Beveridge said. “He, more than any of us, deserved to be up on that dais, and the 22 boys that played couldn’t think of a more fitting end to the year for Murph. People could feel sorry for themselves, but all he’s wanted is success for this football club and his teammates.” Chants of “Bevo, Bevo” then started to ring around the famous ground, as players were interviewed and shared their joy with the fans. Murphy himself said he always had the belief that this side could achieve the ultimate success. “I had full confidence in them,” he said. “They play with an incredible amount of heart and discipline. They honestly play for all you guys here today.”

Tears of joy flowed in the Western Bulldog sections of the crowd in the minutes before the final siren sounded to mark the end of the longest current AFL premiership drought. The Bulldogs’ fans had endured an agonising 120 minutes on the edge of their seats before a late burst of goals ensured the premiership cup would return to the Whitten Oval for the first time since 1954. It was a grand final that had it all. Desire for the cup – that elusive piece of silverware – made for a stressful afternoon for the Bulldog faithful, but it ended as a rewarding one after years of finals torment. It was finally the Bulldogs turn to stand on top of the premiership dais. Acting skipper Easton Wood, injured captain Bob Murphy and senior coach Luke Beveridge took hold of the cup as red, white and blue confetti rained down. Beveridge was being hailed as the mastermind of the triumph, but he was happy to deflect praise on to club president Peter Gordon, who has devoted years of his time and money to ensure the Bulldogs not only survive but thrive in the AFL. The Bulldogs did it from seventh spot in the finals – something never before achieved. They powered into September with 15 wins and overcame a raft of injuries during the season. The Bulldogs faced a race against time to have their stars fit for the finals, but the week’s bye between round 23 and the elimination final proved a handy leg up from the football gods. A shock win on the road over the West Coast Eagles in week one of the finals kick-started the September campaign. That was followed by a win over three-peat premier Hawthorn, ending its era at the top. Seven straight heartbreaking Bulldog preliminary final losses were erased with an emotion-charged win over GWS Giants. At that point, the Bulldogs dared to believe. They showed nerves of steel on Saturday to come through with an against-the-odds win

over the Sydney Swans by 22 points at the MCG on grand final day. “The boys have spoken in the public domain about no ceilings and write the next chapter,” Beveridge said. “As we went on, as we won a final and we beat great opposition, the boys got belief, as well. That obviously continues to blossom and it snowballs out of control in the end.” It was Tom Boyd’s long-range goal from the edge of the centre square that gave the Bulldogs an unassailable lead in time-on of the last quarter. A game that seemed destined for a heart-stopping finish was suddenly burst open by these brilliant Dogs, who kicked the last three goals of the game – two through Liam Picken either side of Boyd’s goal. That gave the Bulldogs’ fans a chance to soak up the monumental achievement as Beveridge
raced down from the coaches’ box to embrace with young midfielder Clay Smith on the boundary. It was not all smooth sailing for the Bulldogs, though. Is it ever? There were periods in the game when it looked as though Sydney was getting on top. After the Bulldogs had won a 16-point lead early in the second quarter, the Swans hit back with four of the next six goals to lead by two at half-time. While there were 11 goals shared in a free-flowing second term, there was only three goals shared in each of the first and third quarters. An eight-point three-quarter time lead was never going to be safe for the Bulldogs – not with Swans superstar Lance Franklin wanting to leave his mark. When Franklin trimmed the lead back to one point, it was fingernail-biting time for the Bulldogs. Then Jake Stringer produced a miracle snap goal from the pack to have the Bulldogs fans believing again. Not even a goal from Swans youngster George Hewett could swing the momentum back for the interstate side. Picken swooped to goal on the run from 35 metres out, Boyd launched his third goal from 60 metres and the icing on the cake was provided by Picken, who gathered the spilled ball in the square and launched it over the goal umpire’s hat to spark wild celebrations in the Bulldogs camp. “Everything was racing,” Beveridge said. “There’s almost like there’s not enough time to win it, but there’s plenty of time to lose it … it felt like going into half-time that we were in a little bit of trouble because Sydney had momentum, they bit back and we needed to dig deep again and find a way. “In the end, we had the even contribution of the 22. In big games like this, you have to have that. “To get a little gap at the end of the game was amazing.”
Siren sounds on the longest wait By Lance Jenkinson Acting Western Bulldogs captain Easton Wood was on tenterhooks on Saturday afternoon until the final siren mercifully sounded and morphed to the strains of Sons of the West. Wood, the defender with the privilege of leading the Bulldogs out for just the third grand final in the club’s history, had the opportunity to stand alongside master coach Luke Beveridge and injured captain Bob Murphy to hoist the premiership cup into the air. It was a moment that will go down in history, one that Wood will forever savour. But the hours leading up to the 22-point victory over the Sydney Swans were not so comfortable. “I didn’t trust it until that siren went,” Wood said of the time updates provided in the last quarter. “This club has had a lot of heartbreak in dying moments and we fought it out right till the end. That last five minutes, it’s just every single second, every second moment; it all counts.” Wood described the joy of winning a premiership as “absolutely surreal”. The 27-year-old played a key role in the Bulldogs’ zone team defence with his ability to read the play being second to none. Often during the finals it was Wood who would float across the pack for an intercept mark. He stamped himself a genuine leader of the club after taking over the captaincy from Murphy. But Murphy was anything but absent once he suffered his knee injury. He was there to support Wood and all the other Bulldogs on the long road to the premiership. Wood is grateful that Murphy was allowed
up on the dais to share in the moment when Bulldogs legend John Schultz presented the premiership cup. “A lot of it has been behind his guidance,” Wood said of Murphy. “He took over the job in pretty stormy waters and steered us out of the storm. We’re not here without him. It breaks my heart that he couldn’t be next to me out there [on the ground].”

- Jason Johannisen
Jason Johannisen was awarded the Norm Smith Medal for best-on-ground after having a profound impact off half-back. The 23-year-old took the road less travelled to the podium; he was born in Johannesburg and arrived at the Bulldogs through the rookie draft. “The club took a massive gamble on me as a young kid,” Johannisen said. “They saw a bit of potential. Just to play my first game was a dream come true and I’m just grateful for the opportunity this fantastic club has given me to try and repay the faith.” Johannisen had 33 disposals, seven marks and came within a fingernail of scoring a goal, only for it to be ruled touched on the line in a score review. It mattered little when he finished with two medallions dangling around his neck. “I just went numb, really. I just couldn’t believe it,” Johannisen said of winning the Norm Smith Medal. “As a kid, you just dream of playing in a grand final and winning it, so it’s definitely a special moment I’ll look back on.”

Classy performance across half-forward. A difficult match-up because of his elusiveness.
The defensive pressure he applied inside forward 50 was a big asset for his side.

Not his most prolific game, but bobbed up when his side needed him.
You ask forwards to make the most of their opportunities and there was no one better on that front with three straight goals under pressure. Colossal performance from the young big with three goals, a bevy of contested marks and some nice touches in ruck contests. There would be sore bodies on the opposing side after this tough-as-nails youngster applied a team-high 11 tackles.
When there was an aerial contest, he showed little regard for his own wellbeing, putting his body on the line for his teammates. Ripped into the contests like a bull terrier. Showed a willingness to work hard both ways with eight tackles.

Used the ball efficiently out of the back half. Sweet victory against his former club.

A weekend of revelry and celebration across the western suburbs led to a boom for local businesses, with many pubs reporting record patron numbers. A financial windfall awaits the Western Bulldogs and the western suburbs following the Dogs’ drought-breaking premiership win at the weekend. Just days after the Dogs won their first flag since 1954 with a 22-point triumph over Sydney, the club is on track for a second consecutive membership record having already sold out of one of its 2017 membership packages on Monday. The EJ Whitten Social Club had reached capacity, while there was an avalanche of calls to the Bulldogs’ membership hotline, with fans eager to sign up for 2017 at the earliest chance. Even before the finals, the Dogs had recorded a 12.3 per cent rise in annual membership, from 35,222 to 39,456. The number represents a club record and, after Saturday’s premiership, it’s rising rapidly. Bulldogs chief executive Gary Kent said there had been “an overwhelming response from our members and fans across both merchandise and membership”. “Almost 2000 members have signed up for 2017 since Saturday alone, and our waiting list for the EJ Whitten Social Club continues to grow,” Mr Kent said. “We have also seen significant merchandise sales since Saturday, with our 2016 Premiers range in high demand.” Former Bulldogs president David Smorgon said it was a dream scenario for the administration. “So many people want to sign up. We used to dream of these days as administrators of the club,” Mr Smorgon said on SEN radio. “We just can’t lose this opportunity to develop the club to a whole new level. There’s no ceiling on what we could be.” Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the Dogs had done the western suburbs proud with their achievements, and the benefits would be seen for years to come. “The city couldn’t be prouder to welcome the Premiership Cup back west after a 62-year absence,” Mr Wall said. “It was great to see the whole community come together to support the team and to celebrate their win. Most of Maribyrnong, especially Footscray, came alive over the weekend with a number of traders experiencing what will probably be record takings. “With all of Victoria given an insight into our great city and a number of broadcasts being done from here, hopefully even more people will come to experience all that we have to offer.”

NEWS
Drugs, deceit lead crime surge By Goya Dmytryshchak Maribyrnong’s crime rate has surged by almost 18 per cent – the biggest increase in five years. The number of offences recorded by police rose from 7887 to 9287 over the past financial year, figures released last week by the Crime Statistics Agency reveal. Crime in Hobsons Bay rose just 2.4 per cent, from 6755 to 6920 recorded offences,
while across Victoria, the average increase was 13.4 per cent. Offences on the rise in Maribyrnong include assault (up 30.5 per cent, from 429 to 560), robbery (up 31.3 per cent, from 80 to 105) and weapons and explosives infringements (up 29.4 per cent, from 221 to 286). Also on the rise were drug dealing and trafficking (up 41.5 per cent, from 123 to 174 cases), public nuisance (up 68.9 per cent, from
45 to 76), deception (mainly stolen credit cards; up 56 per cent, from 500 to 780), property damage (up 30.9 per cent, from 537 to 703) and theft (up 21.1 per cent, from 3400 to 4117). Maribyrnong police’s Inspector Adrian Healy said reasons for the crime rise included Footscray’s transport hub attracting “transient-type activity”, and the suburb being a destination for drug users. He said there had been an increase in minor random
assaults, but Maribyrnong had largely escaped the Apex-style home invasions or carjackings that sent fear through the community. While burglaries decreased, theft from cars increased, with about a third of the thefts being from unlocked vehicles. “We rely on the community for assistance and if people think something’s not right or suspect someone’s breaking into a car or a house, let us know,” Inspector Healy said.

Altona Meadows couple Marek and Hanka Frankowski, both in their 70s, tied the knot on Sunday after 43 years together. Mr Frankowski, who also celebrated his 78th birthday on Sunday, got down on bended knee with a flower from his garden to propose. “He went on one knee and said, ‘Could you marry me,’ Mrs Frankowski said. “I said, ‘Huh, are you joking?’ “He said, ‘No, I don’t, I love you, I want to marry you, I want to be always with you, don’t leave me, stay with me.’ “So, what can you say. Yes! I’ve been waiting 43 years for that.” Mr Frankowski said he realised he couldn’t survive without her love. “She’s my nurse and secretary and cook and everything,” he said. The couple wed in a modest ceremony at Le Viviera pizza restaurant in Point Cook. Goya Dmytryshchak

A proposed ‘shared zone’ for Yarraville Village could bring a slice of Europe to the western suburbs, featuring minimal segregation of pedestrians and vehicles. If adopted, the proposal would bring the first such zoning to a Melbourne shopping strip. In shared zones, which are a common urban design feature in The Netherlands, Germany and UK, the merging of pedestrians and slow-moving traffic is achieved by removing features such as kerbs and road markings. Under the proposal, pedestrians would have right of way throughout the Village, while vehicles would have a speed limit of 10km/h. Cr Martin Zakharov has been championing the shared zone, with detailed plans to be released for public consultation shortly. “We’ve been looking for a long time to make the Village more pedestrianfriendly,” he said. “The area is already such a European-type space that using a European-style solution makes sense. It works in Europe so why not here?” The plans have already been approved by VicRoads, and Cr Zakharov says that if they win broad support through public consultation, the changes could be completed within three to six months. “We’re still working on the finer details, but we don’t think it will cause much disruption during the changeover,” he said. “Everyone I’ve spoken to thinks it’s a great idea. There’ll be more carparking and space for pedestrians, and I think it will be a great addition to the area.” Yarraville Traders Association president Chris Xanthis said he had not seen the final plans, but the proposal had significant merit so long as it was well explained and users understood how it worked.

Aged care held up by track works By Goya Dmytryshchak A proposed $20 million nursing home project has been left in limbo because of the North Williamstown level crossing removal. The Health and Human Services department entered a contract to sell land at 5 Power Street to Southern Cross Care, with settlement contingent on planning approval for the proposed nursing home. Southern Cross Care lodged plans with
Hobsons Bay council for a three-storey, 96-bed aged care facility in May this year. But executive manager of strategy Jacqui O’Brien said her organisation has asked the council to hold off on making a decision. “We’ve just asked the council to not finalise the permits until we know the implications of the grade separation,” Ms O’Brien said. “I haven’t got any more to add to that.” The community has lobbied against removing the level crossing, and a group called

‘Keep the Crossing’ has labelled the removal unnecessary. Group founder Vivienne Gray said she couldn’t fathom why the North Williamstown crossing had been fast-tracked for removal
given there were only six trains an hour on the line, but a spokesman for Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the Ferguson Street crossing removal is still in the planning stage. “The effect of the project on surrounding land will depend on how the level crossing is removed and its final design,” he told Star Weekly Weekly. “[This] will be determined following extensive consultation with local residents and businesses.”
Scouting for members Nearly four years after its hall was burnt down by an arsonist, the 1st Laverton Scout Group is still without its own building. The arsonist was released from jail after serving just half of his four-year sentence for starting five fives, but the scout group has been told it can’t get a new hall unless its numbers increase. After the fire, the group’s numbers dropped from about 20 to less than 10. Group leader Colin Price said the group was currently using a council building next door to the site of the destroyed building. “It’s not helping with that hall because through the winter we lost some kids because it’s too cold,” he said. “There’s no heating, no cooling, nothing in the hall. It’s not adequate.” In a bid to increase the number of both young participants and leaders, the group is holding an open day at its site, opposite the Laverton Community Hub in Railway Avenue. Mr Price said the day aimed to let the
community know the group was determined to rebuild after a string of bad luck. “We had a tandem trailer that got knocked off,” he said. “The group had that for 30 years. “There’s been a few break-ins, a bit of equipment taken. Then the hall got burnt down. “Now we’ve got to get some more kids in and hopefully the scouting association will come up with some buildings.” The open day, from 10am-4pm on Saturday, October 8, will feature market stalls, a sausage sizzle and jumping castle and scouting activities such as learning rope knots and basic first aid, as well as teamwork games, plaster painting and sponge throwing. Scouts Victoria executive manager Dougal Mayor said having a place to call home was important for all 410 scout groups across Victoria. For any inquiries about the day or to become a member, call Colin Price on 0412 997 244. Goya Dmytryshchak

New rail links ease train pain Congestion on the Werribee line has improved significantly, an annual survey by Public Transport Victoria reveals. The survey, which was released last week, is conducted in May each year and measures the average number of passengers on metropolitan train and tram services during morning and evening peak times. The survey is used to determine when and where extra capacity may be needed to reduce overcrowding. It found morning services on the Werribee line were populated above the benchmark level on 26.8 per cent of services, compared with 40 per cent above at the same time last year. Evening peak services improved from 42.9 per cent above the benchmark to 18.2 per cent, one of the biggest improvements in the city. The benchmark for passenger congestion ranges from 798 to 900 passengers per train, depending on which train is used. PTV spokesman John Lindsay said survey results showed the benefits of increased investment in regional rail, and the opening of two new stations. “The significant improvements on the Werribee line can be directly linked to the benefits of the new Regional Rail Link, and the opening of stations at Wyndham and Tarneit which are providing passengers with new travel options,” he said. “These projects will allow more trains to and from Werribee and right across Melbourne, reducing waiting, crowding and delays.”
Survey results were mixed on the Sunbury line, though. Morning services on the Sunbury line, which services the Footscray and Tottenham areas, showed an increase in overcrowding beyond benchmark levels to 40 per cent, up from 35 per cent in 2015. However, there were improvements on evening services, with 12.5 per cent above the benchmark compared with 25 per cent last year.
‘‘
These projects will allow more trains to and from Werribee - John Lindsay
’’
Mr Lindsay said PTV is working with the government to improve Sunbury line services. “The government is ordering 84 new trains, removing 50 dangerous and congested level crossings, installing smarter signalling and building the Metro tunnel, which will create space for tens of thousands of extra passengers in peak hour,” Mr Lindsay said. “These projects will allow more trains to and from Sunbury and right across Melbourne, reducing waiting, crowding and delays. “PTV is working with the department and Metro to develop timetable changes that will help to reduce overcrowding on trains at peak times.” The results on the Werribee and Sunbury lines compare favorably with overall metropolitan results, which show a 1.6 per cent increase in congested morning services, and a 2.6 per cent decrease in the evenings.

The church, at the corner of Melbourne and Hudsons roads, was redeveloped to cater for a booming number of Chin refugees from Burma and to provide a childcare centre for the congregation’s young families. To fund the redevelopment, the parish sold St Paul’s church at Kingsville to an Antiochene Orthodox parish. The St Paul’s vicarage was purchased by a local real estate agent and a Nissen hut at its rear was bought by a parishioner. Reverend Gordon Preece said the expanded

Toddler manslaughter verdict
PHONE \ 03 8318 5777
Mussie Debresay has been found guilty of the manslaughter of his partner’s two-year-old daughter more than a decade after her death. The toddler, her siblings and her mother had slept over at Debresay’s Footscray apartment the night before she died. The Crown had argued during the Supreme Court trial that Debresay stomped on the girl – who cannot be named – in his kitchen in May, 2005, after becoming angry that she had urinated through her nappy on to his couch. Justice Terrence Forrest remanded Debresay, who will be sentenced on November 17.

This fest’s the real deal Williamstown will this month host the third Wine and Cheese Fest at Seaworks, with more than 60 wine, cheese and gourmet food artisans there to tantalise the tastebuds. Festival founder and director Sotir Stojcevski said many events lay false claim to being festivals, but this will be the real deal. “There are so many ‘festivals’ around Melbourne, but they are actually just tasting events. This one is a festival in the real sense of the word,” he said. “So, you’ve got live music all day, jazz, we have DJs, we have an after party as well. Then we have a kids’ zone. We also have lots of food and wine demonstrations.
“We’re going to have wine-making and cheese-making presentations … the grape stomp comp is something that only our festival has in Melbourne.” Competitors will vie for prizes by producing as much grape juice as possible, using their feet. All-day master classes with industry leaders will include wine and cheese matching and speed tasting. The festival is on Sunday, October 23 from 11am-6pm. There are 5000 tickets; prices start at $24. Expo a boating safety wake-up By Adem Saban As the warmer months approach, sailors and boaties are being urged to remain safe on the waters off Wyndham. A boating safety expo will be hosted by Maritime Safety Victoria next weekend at Werribee South, offering a refresher on water and boating safety. Maritime Safety director Peter Corcoran said local sailors would be treated to a range of boating safety activities, including free safety checks on their vessels. “Boating is at the heart of the Wyndham community and this expo provides a
one-stop-shop for boaters to get the right safety information for their boating needs,” he said. “Safety education is our prime concern at the expo – it will be a chance for boaters to get their boats ready for the summer season. “Come along and see demonstrations of flare launching, fire-fighting and lifejacket servicing, as well as get a free safety check done on your vessel. “We also have two marine mechanics who are offering free 20-point checks to help with maintenance queries.” He said the expo would serve as a great way for getting one-on-one advice. “I’d recommend all boaters of every level of
experience attend,” he said. “Whether you are a novice or a lifelong boater – everyone can benefit from safety information.” The Boating Safety Expo will be at Quay Boulevard, Werribee South, from 10am-5pm on Saturday, October 15, and the following day from 11am-4pm. Boat owners are encouraged to bring their vessels, either by trailer or entering via the marina. Food and beverage vans and fun activities for children will make it a family friendly event. “The MSV team is looking forward to some really positive interaction with the Wyndham boating community,” Mr Corcoran said.

A Gateway get-away Gateway Community Services is seeking volunteers to go on adventures with people who have a mild disability. The not-for-profit organisation, based in South Kingsville, supports people with disability and their carers and runs social and lifestyle groups. One of those groups is the Adventurers, which organises social outings for people with low support needs who live in Hobsons Bay and Wyndham. Disability respite team leader Carol Tymoszek says the Adventurers meet from 9am-3pm on Tuesdays, enjoying outings to, for example, football, fishing, barbecues, river cruises, live music and movies. Ms Tymoszek drives the group’s bus, with about 20 people attending each outing. “We’re looking for somebody who can
support our participants. “We’re community-based so we get out and about,” she said. “It’s really just assisting or supporting our participants to access the community and socialise with them, because they have very low-level support needs and they’re very independent. “I need a volunteer to assist: to go knock on the door so they know we’re there, help them on the bus, collect money … it’s really minor duties. It’s all about them getting out and about, making friends and having fun.” Participants are also welcome to join the group. Woodstock via Altona Audiences at Altona City Theatre will be taken on a trip down musical memory lane this month. The theatre’s latest show, The Beat, will have a cast of more than 40 performers and singers showcasing soloists and groups from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s who made an impact on the music scene, among them Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Rolling Stones, Carole King, Elton John and Michael Jackson. The show starts with 1960s girls groups and du-wop boys before taking audiences to Woodstock and the music of the ’70s, with its protest songs and disco divas, and finishing in the neon-filled world of MTV in the ’80s.
Producer Daniel Treloar says the revival show will make audiences feel like they’re attending a real concert of the times. “It’s almost a tribute show. It looks back at Motown and the classic eras,” he says. “It’s the sort of show you … dance in the aisles.” Mr Treloar says the cast has been rehearsing for three months, with some of its members travelling from as far afield as Shepparton. Performances are on October 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 8pm and October 16 at 2pm. Tickets are $25. Details: www.altonacitytheatre.com.au Laura Michell

Judge has ‘sympathy’ for burglar By Ben Cameron A man has been jailed for five years and two months for a string of commercial robberies including a Brooklyn break-in where he ripped a hole in the building’s rear wall using a tow rope and his car. Shelton Jay Blunt pleaded guilty in the County Court to charges of theft, attempted theft, burglary, armed robbery, aggravated burglary, obtaining financial advantage and obtaining property by deception. A sentencing hearing heard last month the

43-year-old began his crime spree by stealing a car last October 14. He then robbed a Bras N Things store at the Airport West shopping centre just after 9am on October 31, threatening the 19-year-old shop attendant with a 30centimetre knife.
“I will f---ing stab you,” he told her during the ordeal. Blunt made her lie down on the floor before leaving with an undisclosed amount of money. He then burgled a business in Braybrook on January 20, 2016. Later that month, on January 31, he stole money from a Footscray burger shop then $2000 from a Totally Workwear store in Brooklyn after gaining access via the rear of the store. The court heard Blunt connected a tow rope from a metal grille at the rear of the store to his car. After dislodging the grille, he
crept through the hole in the wall to steal the money. Justice John Smallwood sentenced Blunt, who had a reported IQ of 55, with a heavy heart. “I personally find these sentencing tasks very, very difficult through a very large degree of sympathy and understanding for the plight in which you, as a man in your forties, find yourself,” he said. “However, a significant gaol sentence in this situation is, objectively, simply inevitable.” Blunt will be eligible for parole in two years and seven months.
Crime fight goes to air A rise in aggravated burglaries across Melbourne’s west has prompted a Brooklyn-based broadcaster to produce crime-prevention messages in 12 languages. Stereo 974 will begin researching and liaising with Victoria Police next month before writing the scripts for messages that will be recorded in English, Vietnamese, Maltese, Serbia, Croatian, Singhalese, Punjabi, Spanish and other languages spoken across the western suburbs. Stereo 974 general manager Rod Boyd said the airwaves provided an effective way to reach thousands of non-English speaking people who tuned in to the station. “As a community we need to be armed with accurate and correct information about crime prevention, be it against the person or property,” he said. “This radio campaign will not only create awareness but also give the correct information to protect Brimbank
residents and inform them about measures they can take to lessen the risks.” Mr Boyd said the 24-hour broadcaster had a “huge audience”, but it couldn’t afford the $120,000 fee required to become involved in listenership surveys. Its reach is extensive enough for the state government, which has signed the station as its designated emergency response broadcaster for the area west of Melbourne city. The crime prevention messages will be broadcast on high-rotation for a year from December. Mr Boyd said Brimbank council contributed $6000 towards the $30,000 project. The not-for-profit organisation, which has been broadcasting across the west for 38 years, was one of 47 organisations to receive funding from Brimbank council’s 2016-17 community grants program. Gone, but not forgotten By Ewen McRae Two historically significant shop fronts at Seddon were demolished last week, leaving neighbours shocked and feeling out of the loop. The shops, both at 83 Gamon Street, Seddon, had been deemed structurally unsound by developers and the council. The site has been the subject of developer interest and community objection since 2014, with council initially rejecting plans to build units there. But unit plans were approved by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in September last year, subject to historical overlay conditions that required the Edwardian shop fronts and verandah be kept intact. Subsequent inspections by developers and councils’ heritage advisor then deemed the shop fronts structurally unsound, with council approving their “temporary” removal, on condition they be restored using their original materials. “Recent amendments were approved relating only to the front façade of two shop fronts,” Maribyrnong council planning services director Nigel Higgins said. “After thorough investigation, it was determined that the façade was structurally unsound, and required temporary removal to facilitate the development approved by VCAT. “The approval of changes included careful consideration by council’s heritage adviser, with strict conditions requiring the reinstatement of the shop fronts using existing bricks. “Once complete, the appearance of the shop fronts will look as per the existing conditions – the size, setback and form of the VCAT-approved building remain unchanged.” But the change of plan was not communicated to locals, with many flooding a Seddon Facebook

page when they discovered the shop fronts had been demolished. Seddon Community Group secretary Pam Mulready said it was not a good start, given many objections. “We like the old character of the street, and it’s clearly convenient for the developers to knock them down. If the council has approved this, it is even more shocking,” Ms Mulready
said. Seddon resident Maria Pollifroni, who played a key role in the VCAT objection, said the demolition was “a big shock”. “One of the conditions from VCAT was to retain the shop fronts, so you can imagine our horror when they demolished everything,” Ms Pollifroni said. “I’ve … heard that amendments to the plans were made in August.”

Business fined for work injury A Laverton North business has been fined $20,000 after an employee sustained injuries to her arm when it became trapped in a conveyor belt. Magistrate Julian Ayres ordered recycling company Shred-X to pay a $20,000 fine, plus legal costs amounting to $3386, after the workplace incident on March 25 this year. The employee was sorting paper on a conveyor belt when a piece of paper became stuck in the nip-point of an adjacent conveyor. She left her work station to remove the paper, taking off a safety guard and reaching into the nip-point to dislodge it. When she put her hand inside the guarded area, the glove she was wearing became entangled in the conveyor and pulled her arm into the nip-point. Shred-X pleaded guilty to failing to conduct a risk assessment, provide information, instruction, training or supervision, and other offences. WorkSafe health and safety executive director Marnie Williams said the case was a reminder that trauma caused by a workplace injury could not be underestimated. “We know that a serious injury can affect not just the worker but their family, friends and colleagues,” Ms Williams said. “It is critically important that the guarding on machinery is appropriate – in this case the guarding should have been fixed to the machine.” Charlene Macaulay

Hooning, drugs, speed still rife Sixteen people were killed and more than 900 injured on the west’s roads in the past financial year. RoadSafe Westgate’s annual report shows that of the injury and serious-injury collisions across the Westgate division in 2015-16, more than a third took place in Wyndham (332), followed by Melton (236), Maribyrnong (182) and Hobsons Bay (179). The 2015-16 Westgate division road toll was 16 killed and 913 injured, while in 2014-15 the numbers were 17 killed and 987 injured. Among the 2015-16 fatalities was a driver whose car burst into flames after it crossed double white lines and struck another car head-on on Dohertys Road, Laverton North. The driver died at the scene. RoadSafe Westgate, a road safety advocacy group with programs across Wyndham, Melton, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, said while inroads were being made to the local road toll, more needed to be done. Chairman Jim Giddings said RoadSafe Westgate had been proactive in getting the road safety message out via workshops and billboards targeting L-platers, P-platers and senior drivers. “The challenges of road safety issues are still there, he said, “but by bringing our local communities on board we will continue to drive changes, including legislative changes, to meet their expectations. The annual report says speed, hoon driving, and drink and drug driving remain the

greatest contributors to road trauma, but driver distraction offences, including using mobile phones behind the wheel, are on the rise. Hooning remains a major problem in Wyndham, with 226 cars impounded over the 2015 calendar year, and 128 cars impounded in the first six months of 2016. Between January 1 and June 30, 2016, 65 cars were impounded in Melton, 29 in Hobsons Bay and 27 in Maribyrnong. Wyndham also recorded the highest ratio of positive breath tests, with one in every 511 drivers tested returning a positive result. On the flip side, highway patrol units recorded a decrease in drivers caught speeding in every area, with speeding offences dropping by almost half in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay.
Prep them well for VCE
Smart pupils uni-bound Yarraville West Primary School pupils have some of the sharpest minds in the state, as indicated by winning their division at last month’s Victorian interschool Tournament of Minds competition. The state win, achieved in the social sciences division, means seven pupils will now travel to Griffith University in Queensland for the Australasian championships on October 15. They will compete against fellow winners from across Australia as well as teams from New Zealand, Hong Kong and Thailand. Tournament of Minds is a national problemsolving competition in which teams are set a challenge then work collaboratively to devise a solution and present it as a performance – fully
researched, scripted, dramatised and costumed by the children with no help from parents or teachers. The pupils had six weeks to prepare for the regional round but just three hours to prepare their performance for the state finals. Under the guidance of teachers David Mountford and Fiona Bird, the team will head to Queensland, hoping to return with a national title. “It’s a very challenging competition, Mr Mountford said. “It builds on students’ collaboration skills, their problem-solving, research, persistence and creativity, so it’s well-rounded. The kids are pretty excited and working hard to make the trip a success. Ewen McRae

MY PLACE Vincent Shin is a school lawyer, boxer and cyclist. He will ride in the Around the Bay event to raise money for The Smith Family. He tells Ewen McRae what he loves about living in Newport. I love Newport Lakes and the nearby parks. My partner, Dacia, and I go walking and kick the footy there quite often. I love how Newport is close to both Footscray, where we get amazing food, and Williamstown, where we can frolic around the beach area on nice summer nights. We have the benefit of enjoying these things without having to live amongst the associated hustle and bustle of those suburbs. What’s your favourite cafe and/or eatery in the local area and why? My favourite restaurant in the area is Hao Phong in Footscray. They have great, cheap Vietnamese and Chinese food. I also love Goje frozen yoghurt in Yarraville. Who doesn’t love frozen yoghurt? What are you passionate about and why? I am passionate about boxing. I am an amateur boxer. I am passionate about cycling along the beach, either Beach Road along Port Phillip Bay or down The Esplanade around Williamstown and Altona. Every time I ride along the beach, I soak up every minute and think how lucky we are to have such a beautiful coastline in Melbourne. I am also very passionate about working with young people. I have worked in the out of home care system, looking after children and young people living in residential care homes all around Victoria. These young people are removed from their parents for
neglect or abuse reasons. I am passionate about addressing family violence in our community. I dealt with family violence throughout my whole childhood and I am grateful that this issue is very much front and centre, both in the political and public sphere. About one woman a week is killed by their current or former partner in Australia. This should be of concern to all of us as this is a very alarming statistic. We can all help address this social ill by talking about it, understanding it. Why are you doing the Around the Bay ride? I am doing the Around the Bay ride because I love cycling and I also want to raise money for disadvantaged Aussie kids who need assistance. How much training have you done for the ride? I cycle almost every weekend. I also train most days of the week at the gym. What would people be surprised to know about you? I am a community lawyer employed by WEstjustice, which is a community legal centre based within the Grange P12 College, Hoppers Crossing. I assist students and families with their legal issues, ranging from employment law and consumer matters to family violence matters. I also deliver legal education sessions to the parents and students.

FOOTBALL, MEAT PIES … AND BEVO
Have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed the media spotlight on Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge in the lead-up to, and on, Grand Final Day. Seeing him go out of his way to connect with fans of all ages and from all walks of life reinforced to me what a wonderful, down-to-earth bloke he is. And knowing the importance of a good feed, I loved his letters to Bulldogs fans who travelled by bus to Sydney for the preliminary final against the Giants: there was a $10 note enclosed in every envelope so they could shout themselves a proper brekky at food trucks along the way, to fuel themselves up for what turned out to be a monumental night at Spotless Luke admits he’s not a bad cook, when he has a crack. A little while back, he told Food Bytes his signature dish was sesame ginger beef stir fry. He also loves a T-bone steak with peppercorn sauce and mashed potato. But what’s his favourite food of all time? “Good old meat pie,” says Bevo. How very ‘footy’ can you get? I’d love to hear about your own Grand Final Day spreads: Did you have a barbie? Did you keep it simple and break out half-time party pies and sausage rolls? Or did you do something completely different this year?
SCOTT SHERLOCK – WERRIBEE FOOTBALL CLUB 100-GAME PLAYER FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? SS: I would have to say they get the job done; no one has become sick yet. FB: What is your signature dish? SS: Pretty basic, but it would be a porterhouse steak with veg. “Stressed spelled backwards is desserts. Coincidence? I think not!” – Unknown

This irresistible Edwardian, facing north towards Footscray Park, the Maribyrnong River and Flemington Racecourse, sits on about 1100 square metres, with about 350 square metres having permit and plan approval for two dwellings. The house has been meticulously restored to its heyday glory, with intact period elements including 3.6-metre ceilings, rosettes, picture ledges, leadlight doors and windows, original fireplaces and wide floorboards. Six large bedrooms (two with fireplaces) share two smartly updated bathrooms. The two dormer bedrooms share the top floor with a sunroom. A double-brick garage has potential for studio conversion.
Beautifully presented, this double-storey residence is within a two-minute car trip of Medway Golf Course and a 10-minute walk of Cranwell Park. Investors and buyers wanting a slice of an up-and-coming suburb are likely to show interest in this one. It has three carpeted upstairs bedrooms (each with a wardrobe) sharing a gleaming bathroom with separate shower and tub. A very spacious living zone with polished floorboards adjoins a tiled kitchen with plenty of timber cabinetry, breakfast bench, under-bench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. Polished concrete floors and a kitchen featuring stainless steel surfaces, Miele appliances and integrated Liebherr refrigeration complement a living/dining area where bi-fold doors reveal a landscaped garden. Williamstown 37 Osborne Street The Allotment, The Address, The Attraction Period character and present day comfort explain why its 36 years since this three bedroom, two bathroom home was last on the market. In addition, its deep, wide rear garden illustrates the attraction of a generous allotment on a tree-lined street so close to the bay that the sea breeze is an appealing accompaniment. Scope to renovate when ready, STCA, can be considered from today’s engaging proportions including central living and dining areas, a substantial separate kitchen and a family room that reveals the garden. The option to extend upstairs is inspired by the idea of bright new spaces with bay views, a prospect that further enhances the future of a residence with a rich family past. Walk to the beach, wander to the Botanic Gardens and reach transport, schools and Nelson Place in moments.

SPORT Past player sees bright future at the kennel Matthew Croft has a similar tale to most Footscray-Western Bulldogs players of the past 62 years. Croft, a full-back of repute and an occasional forward of 186 games, featured in a number of title-contending Bulldogs’ teams that ultimately never made it to an AFL grand final. Croft often felt the pain of losing a preliminary final, both as a player in the 1997 and ’98 seasons and a supporter from 2008 to ’10. “I truly didn’t think it could happen,” Croft said, of the Bulldogs’ breakthrough premiership last weekend. “I played for 14 years and it was always that preliminary final ceiling.” One word that has consistently propped up since the Bulldogs clinched the cup is ‘belief’. The Bulldogs never wavered from the blueprint coach Luke Beveridge set out at the
start of the year and “stayed true to their task”, Croft said. “They don’t worry about the outcome, they just concentrate on the process. “They get a couple of goals behind, and they don’t change the way they go about it. “They keep persevering with the plan and the process.” Croft was just one of a number of past players to make it to the MCG for the Bulldogs’ victory. Current players have felt connected to past players, and embraced them during this finals series. “They went through their careers dreaming of getting into a grand final and never had that opportunity,” Croft said. “So they’re coming out now to have their little piece of it as well and are all a part of it. The club has survived on numerous occasions
when it almost wasn’t going to be a club,” he said. “Those past players had a part to play in keeping the club here.” Croft believes this could be the beginning of a great new era for the Bulldogs. Off the field, the coffers are expected to swell, with corporate support and membership numbers already going into record-breaking territory. The team is young and has not yet peaked. “Certainly it can set up a fantastic era,” Croft said. “It’s a real change for the club, and we’ve got to capitalise on it. “Have the fun, enjoy it now, but then you’ve got to capitalise on it.” Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ You have no doubt already read page upon page about the magnificent Bulldogs win, but it would be remiss of me not to mention some of my premiership highlights. The paths taken by Tom Boyd and Dale Morris to be part of this flag team could not be further apart. One, a No.1 draft pick traded in a multi-million dollar deal. The other, a suburban footballer rejected on several occasions who went to VFL level at Werribee before being rookie listed. Morris grabbed his chance and, despite a near career-threatening leg injury, is now a premiership player. Boyd has spent all year slowly going about his work, despite the crippling weight of expectation on his young shoulders. To produce on the biggest of all stages, as Tom did last Saturday, was impressive and a great sign for the future of himself and his club. There was an unbelievable effort from Shane Biggs in the final quarter that summed up his development as a player and epitomised the very fabric of this team. I could easily list another 20 highlights without blinking. ■ Matt Hanson capped off another fine year at Avalon Airport Oval by winning the Bruce Montgomery Trophy as the Tigers’ best and fairest for 2016. Hopefully, he not only caught the eyes of the Werribee coaching staff, but also those of AFL recruiters. A very deserving winner on the night was Jason Robinson, who took out the inaugural Serial Pest of the Year Award. Scott Sherlock announced his retirement from VFL football after 100 games with the club. You would have to go a long way to find a more solid citizen than Scott, who gave his all on and off the field. ■ Another VFL stalwart, Cameron Lockwood, bade farewell to his days at Williamstown Football Club on the same night as teammate Willie Wheeler took home the Gerry Callahan Medal as best and fairest for the Seagulls. In another move, the Seagulls are looking for a development coach as Michael Ford is moving interstate with his family.
Joy for elder statesman By Lance Jenkinson At 34 years of age, Matthew Boyd is the elder statesman of the Western Bulldogs premiership team. The fact perhaps only dawned on Boyd in the minutes after Saturday’s AFL grand final win over the Sydney Swans during an exchange with young teammate Zaine Cordy on the hallowed turf of the MCG. “I asked Zaine on the field, ‘how many games have you played?, and he said, ‘11’,” Boyd recalled. “I just said, ‘Get stuffed’. I’ve had to play 282 games [for a premiership]. It’s still sweet as; it doesn’t matter how many you’ve played.” Boyd has never been part of a tighter-knit football team than the 2016 version of the Western Bulldogs. Despite their varying ages, the Bulldogs have blended beautifully in the past two years under premiership coach Luke Beveridge. They boast a handful of veterans, a smattering of players in their prime and a bevy of youngsters making their mark.
“Most important out of anything, this group is the tightest I’ve ever been involved with,” Boyd said. “We care for each other. It sounds a bit cliched, but it’s a brotherhood. “We’ve been through some really tough times. We went through adversity this year with injuries and off-field stuff and it’s brought us closer together.” Just as important to Boyd is the chance to play a brand of football that excites the players. Beveridge has found the right mix of defence and attack in his strategies and has empowered his players to think about their own games and how they can impact the contest. Even Boyd has been reinvented under Beveridge, going from a hard-working midfielder to a damaging ball user off the halfback line. “He’s always looked at the strengths that we’ve got rather than the weaknesses,” Boyd said. “He’s brought a game style that we love playing, and I think that’s half the battle.” So many obstacles were placed in front of the Bulldogs this season that most people wrote
them off as a flag contender. They suffered season-ending injuries to captain Bob Murphy, full-forward Jack Redpath, centreman Mitch Wallis and defenders Marcus Adams and Josh Prudden, and the aftershocks of the Essendon drugs scandal were felt with forward Stewart Crameri suspended for the season. History was also against the Bulldogs with no team having come from seventh to reach a grand final, let alone win a premiership. Through it all, the players, young and old, never lost belief. “We just knew that the way we played we could challenge anyone in the competition,” Boyd said. “We’ve never put a ceiling on ourselves, never put a time frame on when we would have success, and it just shows that if you’ve got belief in each other and belief in the way we play, anything is possible and today is proof of that.” Boyd admitted to getting a “little bit emotional” in the days leading up to the grand final. The three-time Charles Sutton medallist has seen plenty of ups and downs in his career, but this was undoubtedly his finest moment.
■ Paul Chapman is not returning to Werribee Districts in 2017. It will be interesting to see which direction the club takes. Is the club in better shape than it was 12 months ago?

Club veteran looks ahead after long road to the top
Western Bulldogs’ veteran Dale Morris takes a strong mark in front of Sydney Swans’ youngster Tom Papley. (Quinn Rooney/Getty Images)
For 12 long seasons Dale Morris has toiled away on the backline for the Western Bulldogs in the hope of landing an AFL premiership. The 33-year-old finally got his reward on Saturday when the Bulldogs wrapped up their first flag since 1954. You have to go all the way back to his days in the Werribee seconds for his last premiership run. At the time, he was just a fresh-faced young man out of the Doutta Stars, but now he is a veteran leader of a Bulldogs’ defence that kept a Lance Franklin-led Sydney Swans’ forward line to just 10 goals. “It’s pretty crazy isn’t it,” Morris said of the premiership. “Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable … I’m lost for words. “I’m so proud of these boys, this club, everyone involved.” Morris is one of the most admired footballers in the league. Literally, no task is too big or too small as he
takes on some of the best forwards in the league – some who are short and quick, others big and strong. He always plays his game hard, but fair. And his loyalty to the Bulldogs since he was picked up in the 2005 rookie draft has endeared himself to club supporters. Morris has seen his fair share of ups and downs in 12 seasons at the kennel, but one constant at the Bulldogs has been his dependability. His coaches – firstly Rodney Eade, Brendan McCartney and now Luke Beveridge – would surely not bother about a magnet on the whiteboard for Morris. They’d just simply use a permanent marker to write ‘D. Morris’ in one position on the backline, and then worry about the other 21 spots. Looking back on all the failed finals’ attempts, Morris is disappointed for his former teammates, who never had the chance to taste victory on grand final day.
“The lists we had back then were just as good as the list we have right now,” he said. “We came across some very tough teams at the time, and just couldn’t get the job done. “I still keep in contact with those boys back then … we were close, we were very close and we were very disappointed we couldn’t go all the way then.” What has kept Morris at the Bulldogs is a stern belief that a premiership medallion was attainable. No matter what side the Bulldogs started out with in a season, or the eventual outcome, Morris went into the next season believing they had a chance to break the premiership drought. “Every year I come into the season believing we can do anything,” Morris said. “Every year, it’s no different. “Next year will be the same thing. “To be able to fulfil that now is just incredible.” Lance Jenkinson
A tribute to spirit and courage By Lance Jenkinson Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has paid tribute to the long-suffering fans who have stuck by the club through thick and thin. The Bulldogs have endured their fair share of turmoil – from the failed merger in 1989 and the depths of despair in 1996 when the movie documentary Year of the Dogs came out, to the more recent trade requests of club captain Ryan Griffen and Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney and departure of former coach Brendan McCartney. On the field, it has been a case of three decades of near misses – seven losing preliminary finals are a lot for anyone to handle. The supporters have ridden the bumps and been rewarded for their loyalty with a long-awaited premiership – their first since 1954, secured in their first decider since the loss of 1961. “This is a club whose members and fans have gone through since 1961 without seeing its team in a grand final,” Gordon said. “Many of them despaired that the day would never come. They’ve seen year after year where other teams’ fans got to see their team in a grand final. “They believed, maybe despaired, that was something that was never going to happen to them.” The Bulldogs are proud to have done it their own way. They celebrated with great finals wins over West Coast Eagles, Hawthorn and GWS Giants in the lead-up to the big dance. Some felt the emotion was over the top, but not Gordon. “For us the joy and elation of [the win over GWS] last week in Sydney was something really special,” he said. “There was the Eagles win in Perth – no one really expected us to win. There was the game against the Hawks with 88,000 people here on a Friday night. We’ve got that much respect for Hawthorn as a team, but to come back from four goals down and take them out – those are the things that you celebrate. “There’s a few experts around who say you need to keep a lid on it and do these things in a particular way like they [Hawthorn] do – but we’re not them, we’re us. “It doesn’t mean the next day that we don’t knuckle down.” Gordon looks back to late 2014 as the turning point for the Bulldogs. The arrival of new coach Luke Beveridge, the brave trade of Griffen for youngster Tom Boyd and the appointment of Bob Murphy as captain ushered in a new era. In particular, the Beveridge and Murphy coach-captain relationship set the club on the right path. “For me, I look at the arrival of this man, Luke Beveridge, to our club and the synergy
and the bond that he found with his captain,” Gordon said. “Murph, as you know, is a complex guy – he’s a deeply introspective guy … he may not have always wanted to take that leadership position, but he told me in October, 2014, that this was his team and he really wanted to work. “Several months later, he made a comment in the media that while he liked all of his coaches, he believes this guy was the guy he was born to be coached by. “The combination of these two guys is greater than the sum of the parts.” The Western Bulldogs’ fans celebrated long and hard into Saturday night and then on into Sunday. The party will continue at a sold out Charlie Sutton Medal count tonight (October 5) at the Crown Palladium. “Spirit, courage, never say die, the relentless attitude … I think everyone in the club can take some credit for that,” Gordon said. “Fifty-five years of never quite believing whether the day would come – and today this day has come. “The unadulterated joy – not just for Bulldogs fans, but for all fans who might’ve believed that their turn would never come … this day has kind of changed everything.”
