NEWS + SPORT + THE WEST’S BEST PROPERTY GUIDE ■ Bulldogs break AFL grand final drought

■ West painted red, white and blue

We’re all barking glad By Benjamin Millar The drought is over – after 55 years in the grand final wilderness, the Western Bulldogs have stormed into an AFL premiership decider. Despite the dream looking in grave danger late in Saturday’s preliminary final against the GWS Giants, the Bulldogs’ trademark grit and determination under revered coach Luke Beveridge ensured a successful fightback that propelled the team into its first flag decider since 1961. The fairytale weekend was capped off with a stunning win by Footscray in the VFL decider on Sunday. The Bulldogs trailed by a goal at half-time before piling on 52 points to none in the third quarter to set up the victory. Bulldogs fans are hoping the senior side can win against the Sydney Swans to add to their lone premiership victory, the 1954 defeat of Melbourne. For the fourth consecutive week, the Bulldogs will enter a match as underdogs, despite seeing off last year’s grand finalists, West Coast Eagles and Hawthorn, in consecutive do-or-die finals prior to their win over the highly fancied Giants. More than 8000 passionate Bulldogs fans made the trip to Sydney to witness the victory after an epic arm-wrestle that saw the lead change six times before the Bulldogs finished strongly to win by six points after trailing by 14 in the final quarter. Fans flooded the field after the match to savour the atmosphere as the momentousness of the occasion set in. Yarraville’s Max Grarock was one of the supporters who hit the Hume Highway on Saturday to ensure Spotless Stadium was awash with red, white and blue. “Travelling to Sydney to support them in a preliminary final was a huge honour – I feel tears well up when I think of being at the ’G next weekend,” he said. “No matter what happens this week, we’re so proud. Woof!” Mr Grarock travelled to the game with wife Jo and son Herbie, an eight-year-old with an encyclopaedic knowledge of his beloved Bulldogs. “Most parents teach their children to love their football team – our love for the Bulldogs came from our kid,” Mr Grarock said. “His passion for the Bulldogs was contagious. “We became members for him … our years cheering the Bulldogs, united as a family, have been indescribably wonderful. Even the lean

times when we lost week after week were great.” Herbie, who has been a supporter for six years, said he was hoping for a grand final win by a close margin. Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the city, including the town hall, community centres and libraries, would be decked out in the Bulldogs’ tricolours. “We are very proud that through an extremely

tough and emotional season, our Doggies are playing in the 2016 AFL Grand Final,” he said. “For what has been a very long journey for our community … not appearing in a grand final in 55 years – it is a record we are delighted to have put to rest. “As for this week, the city of Maribyrnong will come together to celebrate this historic

Gordon Street plan mixes living, working Plans have been lodged with Maribyrnong council for a major redevelopment of the Thales site in Maribyrnong. The prominent site at 421-449 Gordon Street has been snapped up by developers eager to capitalise on the property’s location. A planning application by Planning & Property Partners proposes a mixed residential and commercial development for the 5074-square-metre site. Under the plans, the $21 million redevelopment would retain the existing brick shell and sawtooth roof of the heritage building, previously part of the Colonial Ammunition

Factory, creating 18 two and three-storey townhouses split into two rows. A six-storey mixed use building with two commercial premises and 64 apartments would be built on the existing carpark. The proposal suggests the design will result in a “highly resolved architectural and urban design outcome” sensitive to the existing building on the site. “The location of the site and the recent development of the Edgewater estate, which includes higher-density apartment buildings scattered in strategic locations across the estate, ensure that the site can accommodate a

mixed use development of the form and scale proposed,” the proposal states. “The physical characteristics of the site dictate that it is capable of accommodating an appropriately scaled development that incorporates and respects the existing recognised heritage building on-site, without comprising the amenity of future occupants or other nearby residential properties.” A reduction in standard visitor, customer and staff carparking requirements is being sought. Turf, plant bandits strike By Goya Dmytryshchak Seaholme and Altona residents have been upset by green-fingered thieves literally taking over their turf. A Seaholme resident said she was walking around Cherry Lake when she noticed a large patch of grass had been dug up, possibly for someone’s nature strip. “It’s actually been taken out like turf,” said the resident, who asked not to be named. “It’s about a metre wide and a few metres in length. “It appears to have been cut out and, I believe, possibly used as turf to plant and let it spread on a nature strip or in a property. No matter what it’s been used for, it’s obvious that it’s a malicious and deliberate act of damage and theft.” It’s not the first time garden-minded thieves have targeted public assets. In June, thieves stole several round cacti from a roundabout outside the Civic Centre in Altona. The golden barrel cacti, at the corner of Pier Street and Civic Parade, were planted about a year ago. Would-be thieves were also interrupted trying to steal a palm tree from outside the Spotswood Railway Workshops in Melbourne Road. VicTrack, which owns the land, foiled the attempted theft after a resident noticed that the historically significant mature palm had been dug up. Hobsons Bay council said it had not received any report of stolen grass around Cherry Lake. Part of the popular recreational spot is managed by Melbourne Water.

Man jailed for crash that killed girlfriend A drunken, drug-fuelled man who killed his girlfriend in a car crash at Laverton North may serve less than five years of his seven-year prison sentence. Sasho Ristovski, 28, pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing death, and one charge of reckless conduct endangering a person following the car accident in the early hours of July 4, 2014. Ristovski was over the legal blood alcohol limit and was affected by the drug ice when he lost control of his car on the corner of Doherty’s and Fitzgerald roads. The car was airborne for five metres before hitting a tree in a median strip at 82km/h, the court heard. The crash killed Ristovski’s passenger and girlfriend, Maddison Tilyard. Ristovski sustained broken ribs and collarbone and a fractured spine. Ristovski, a former security guard, had picked up Maddison and her friend, Amber Newman, from a friend’s house in Craigieburn about 3am that day. The court heard soon after he had almost crashed into another car, and was seen speeding at about 210km/h. He ignored warnings from Ms Newman, who was dropped off before the crash, to slow down. At a sentencing hearing last month Judge Frank Gucciardo sentenced Ristovski to seven years’ jail, with a non-parole period of four years and nine months.

Thieves are believed responsible for a large patch of grass being dug up at Cherry Lake.

Altona unit bid gets VCAT tick By Goya Dmytryshchak A developer has won a bid to demolish two houses and build a three-storey, 23-dwelling apartment block in Altona. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has set aside Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to grant a permit to Gardencity Altona Pty Ltd for the corner site at 99 Queen and 7 Davies streets, which currently has two single-storey houses. In 2012, VCAT upheld the council’s refusal to approve the same applicant’s plans for a four-storey, 30-dwelling apartment block and basement parking for 33 vehicles. Revised plans show 13 one-bedroom dwellings and 10 two-bedroom dwellings, with a basement accommodating car stackers for 27 vehicles, bike storage and bins. The council argued the “building’s height and massing and bulk would be inconsistent with the character of the area”. Forty-five nearby residents opposed the revised plan, saying it was excessive, had inadequate parking and would adversely affect their amenity. In approving the revised plans, VCAT member Geoffrey Rundell said Gardencity had responded to previous advice from the tribunal. He said that although most surrounding homes were modest one and two-storey houses aged about 50 to 60 years old, “change was under way”. He said significant redevelopment had occurred in and around the Altona activity centre, including four and five-storey buildings at the northern end of Pier Street. “The planning policy framework clearly encourages a site near an activity centre to be developed for multiple dwellings to provide more housing choice,” he said.

Anu in tune for big prom night

John Mansfield, Carolann Deakes and Clare Perry are all set for the Last Night of The Proms concert at Williamstown Hall. (Luke Hemer)

Australian pop singer and actor Christine Anu has been announced as the headline act for the Last Night of the Proms in Williamstown next month. The Western Region Concert Band and SingWest choir will perform music such as Military March No.4 by Elgar and Irish Tune from County Derry (aka Danny Boy) by Percy Grainger. Publicity officer John Mansfield said prommers – the name given to people who attend the concerts – would wave Union Jacks and Australian flags, don fancy dress and sing along at Williamstown Town Hall. “The program will be varied and will include an arrangement called Instant Concert, which is 35 tunes in two minutes,” he said. “Christine Anu will be singing 10 of her favourite songs, including Island Home. “Then the band will go into what is affectionately known as the prom-cycle. That is what they do every year at the Royal Albert Hall in London.” It features Land of Hope and Glory, Fantasy on British Sea Songs, Jerusalem and Rule Britannia! The concert will be at Williamstown Town Hall on October 8 from 7.30pm. Tickets cost $44.50/$39.50. Bookings and information: hobsonsbaytickets.com.au or call 9932 4074. Goya Dmytryshchak

Clogged road in councils’ sights By Charlene Macaulay A Seabrook road has been named one of the state’s worst for the third year running. The RACV Redspot survey ranks Point Cook Road, between Sneydes Road and the Princes Freeway, as number seven on the list of the state’s 10 most congested roads. This stretch of road falls under Hobsons Bay council but is also a main thoroughfare for Wyndham residents. “Making it to the top 10 for the third survey in a row, it’s clear that

traffic on Point Cook Road is going nowhere fast,” a survey report states. “The new Sneydes Road interchange is too far west for many people close to Point Cook Road. However, it is understood that VicRoads is investigating upgrading the Point Cook Road/Princes Freeway interchange.” VicRoads did not answer Star Weekly’s specific questions about the possible upgrade. VicRoads improvement projects manager for the north-west region Sohail Muhammad said the organisation had been “working

closely with key stakeholders on a number of important transport improvement projects that will deliver benefits right across Wyndham”. Wyndham council transport portfolioholder Glenn Goodfellow said he was not surprised to see that the stretch of Point Cook Road had again made the ‘10 worst’ list. Cr Goodfellow confirmed that a joint Wyndham-Hobsons Bay councils’ proposal seeking to alleviate traffic congestion on Point Cook Road leading to the freeway had been forwarded to VicRoads. “The Wyndham

council part [of Point Cook Road] has been duplicated; it’s the part beyond that which needs work,” Cr Goodfellow said. “But you can’t just duplicate that road and have a bottleneck in the shopping strip leading onto the freeway. “Instead of the road going up and over the bridge and going through [Laverton] to get onto the freeway, there have been concepts done with VicRoads to see if we could realign all that straight onto the freeway. “It’s the flow onto the freeway that’s the hold-up going through that area.”

Science joins the Storm When Melbourne Storm takes the field against Cronulla Sharks in this Sunday’s NRL grand final showdown, a little bit of Victoria University assistance could just give them the edge they need to hold the premiership cup aloft. The rugby league club has been training with a system based in part on the work of Footscray-based VU sports scientist Grant Duthie, who has devised a way for athletes to train that makes the most of data gathered from players’ on-field performance. Dr Duthie has spent a decade collecting GPS data that monitors the volume, intensity and nature of work performed by individual players. In his role as Melbourne Storm’s performance analyst, he has used the data to develop specialised training that prepares players for the most intense and demanding periods of competition. Dr Duthie says the approach brings together the game’s technical

and tactical aspects and pushes players to train at levels that match their on-field capabilities. “A lot of other GPS monitoring looks at quantifying what the players have done; it’s descriptive. This system looks at what players can do as opposed to what they can’t do. Training is prescribed, rather than described,” Dr Duthie said. He works with Melbourne Storm director of performance Dean Benton to ensure the system creates pressure in the training environment. Dr Duthie said the information could help coaches ensure players were training in a way that prepares them for the realities of the game. “The objective is to maximise the efficiency of training. There has to be pressure in the training, otherwise it doesn’t transfer to the game.” Benjamin Millar

Drug importer to forfeit his home By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows man jailed for importing more than 200 kilograms of methamphetamines has lost an appeal to stop the confiscation of his home by Australian Federal Police. Dock worker Patrick Cini and his son Rhys were arrested in 2013 after police found 203 kilograms of ice in the tyres of a tractor-truck on a ship docked at the Port of Brisbane. The tractor-truck had been imported from China by Patrick Cini’s company. Police

removed the drugs and replaced them with dummy packages before letting the ship continue on to Melbourne. The Cinis collected the tractor-truck and drove it to a Brooklyn factory. However, fearing the factory could be robbed, they moved the packages to 14 Ayr Street, Altona Meadows, which has been Patrick Cini’s home since 1987. From there, all but six packages were distributed to other locations before the pair was arrested. Patrick Cini pleaded guilty to importing

a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs. The Court of Appeal last week dismissed Cini’s appeal against the seizure of his house. Justices Phillip Priest, Joseph Santamaria and Stephen Kay said Cini had been incapable

of showing that Ayr Street was not used in, or in connection with, unlawful activity. “On the available evidence, the very reason for relocating the ‘drugs’ to the applicant’s residential property at Ayr Street was to safeguard them against possible theft,” they stated. “Moreover, it was thought that the move would also help thwart detection by law enforcement authorities. Further, and in that respect, there were features of Ayr Street which made it a preferred location for the storage of illicit drugs.”

Pitching in for juniors The Kooringal Foundation’s inaugural golf day last Friday raised $21,000 in support of junior golfers. The Kooringal Golf Club, which this year celebrates its 70th anniversary, created the foundation two years ago to boost the number of its younger golfers. The foundation set up a permanent fund, independent of club administration, aimed at giving young people of diverse economic and multicultural backgrounds an ‘equal playing field’. Chairwoman of trustees Lyn Foote said the average age of golfers at Kooringal was 58 for men and 65 for women. “In Victoria, players under 18 make up only four per cent of the total member numbers,” she said. The foundation aims to continue providing scholarships for junior golfers. “Currently, we have 42 registered juniors. We provide transport and the opportunity to

enter regional competitions. We also provide clinics for women golfers and help our club with infrastructure when the need arises.” Since its inception, the foundation has raised $43,500 towards its $50,000 short-term goal. The push for young members is a change of course for a club steeped in tradition. It has commemorated its anniversary by launching its own history book, By The Water, by local identity Carolyn Jackson. Goya Dmytryshchak

Ms Sutton said the idea of renaming the street in her father’s honour came as the Western Bulldogs entered an exciting new era. “Dad always wanted Chris Grant or Brad Johnson to take his team to a premiership and then he wanted Robert [Murphy],” she said. “They’re his three favourite boys.” Ms Sutton said her father loved the club so much, she caught him sneaking out to attend training just days before his death in 2012, aged 88. “I said, ‘You’re not going to training are you’, because he was dressed nicely … he said, ‘Oh no’. As soon as I drove off, he went and drove to training, and he was nearly dead. “He was so devoted to that club – he just bled red, white and blue.”

The family of football legend Charlie Sutton say they are honoured at a suggestion from the community to rename Seaholme’s Surf Street to Sutton Street in his honour. Hobsons Bay council has been approached to change the name of the tiny street in honour of the Western Bulldogs’ 1954 premiership captain, who lived on its south-western corner. His son, Charles, said his mum and dad bought the house in the 1960s. “Dad would be really honoured,” he said. Under Hobsons Bay council’s naming policy, the person being commemorated must be shown to have had a direct and long-term association with the feature or have made a significant contribution to the area or region. Mr Sutton’s daughter, Pam Sutton, said the family had a long connection to Altona and surrounds. Her mother bought a house in Upton Street when Pam was born in 1944 while her father was serving with the army in Alice Springs. When he returned in 1945, Mr Sutton worked as a truck driver, working at the RAAF base in Point Cook and from the Altona quarry where Altona Gate shopping centre now stands. “We didn’t have any made roads in Altona and dad had a horse tethered in the street,” Ms Sutton said. “We didn’t have a kitchen sink. Mum washed out of a basin. Dad won a reward from a hardware store in Footscray and chose a kitchen sink.” Ms Sutton said for a few years the family

Jobs lift as store grows Fifty new jobs have been created as part of the expansion of a Yarraville supermarket. The refurbished Coles store at Yarraville Square, officially opened last week, has expanded to employ 150 people. The store now features an in-store bakery and butcher as well as extended dairy and fresh produce sections. Coles Yarraville store manager Paul Kyriazis says he’s been looking forward to welcoming people to the new-look store. “We’re committed to our local community

and the changes to our store certainly reflect this,” he said. Mr Kyriazis says the Yarraville store regularly supports the local community with fundraising for children’s Auskick programs, and it provides a store barbecue for fundraising. The official ribbon-cutting was a task shared by Wayne Roberts, who has been with the store for 13 years, and well-known Yarraville residents Lola and Peter Anderson.

Let’s get some steam up By Goya Dmytryshchak Newport’s Graeme Rayson has trains running in his blood. His father, Ron, was a steam-train driver at Bendigo, and would come home with such a blackened face that Mr Rayson remembers being scared. “It was that bad that when he came home we’d cry because we didn’t know who he was,” he said. His father moved the family to Newport and switched over to the “sparks”, driving the Altona train or “seaweed express” for 21 years. Mr Rayson couldn’t follow in his father’s footsteps because he wore glasses, which were then prohibited for train drivers. “Because of the steam engine, they’d all fog up,” he said. So, in 1961, Graeme started work as a railway clerk. Now 72, he has volunteered for the past 33 years with Vintage Rail Travel 707 Operations, an all-volunteer group that restores and maintains heritage steam and diesel locomotives and carriages from the 1940s and ’50s fleet at Newport. The name stems from the R707 locomotive, which in 1983 was a rolling wreck before four railway men obtained permission to overhaul it. Two years later, it was back in service. On October 15, the R707 is running from Melbourne to Seymour for the Tastes of the Goulburn Festival on October 15. It will depart Southern Cross Station at 9.20am, picking up passengers at Essendon and Craigieburn and arriving in Seymour at 11.05am. Details: 707operations.com.au or 0403 883 424. Star Weekly classifieds – effective, affordable, in print and online Peak Medical GPC clinic manager Ray Fontelera says the Hoppers Crossing general practice’s use of classified advertising in Wyndham Star Weekly – print and online editions – has been “fantastic”. Like many people who want to directly connect their goods or services with their local customers, Ray realised the most focused way of doing that was through the local newspaper, especially as these days all advertising appears online as well as in print – for one fee. Classified advertising in any one of 31 publications across Melbourne is a super-easy process and can be done online, or through all mobile devices, at any time. Using the self-serve system, people who sell goods, promote trade and professional services or place notices are able to edit and preview ads before they’re published – ensuring the finished product is exactly what they want. It’s an easy process to upload photos or logos and to organise the addition of extra weeks in print or online. And there’s a choice of packages to suit needs. Go to networkclassifieds.adperfect.com to get your message out quickly and easily.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir road-tests a whole new barbecue experience … Phi Phi 2 is a new sister eatery to the local favourite across the road. Phi Phi 2, with its lighter, tighter lunch menu, serves a limited range of curries and salads. But the night-time action is overwhelmingly about cooked-at-table BBQ and hot pots. Given the hot pot variation is freely available at a couple of nearby joints and more broadly across the west, almost all customers go the BBQ route. We do, too, with abandon and, ultimately, great joy. Phi Phi 2 is done out in dark wood, with most of the seating in booths that line the long room. There’s a trio of tall, small tables at the front windows overlooking Alfrieda Street and a couple of bigger tables at the back. Our host, Jentsy, tells us the BBQ food here has its roots very deeply in South Korea, but much of the seasoning/sauces/marinades and the ritual come more directly from Vietnam where this kind of cooking is very popular. We start with two dishes from the entree list. Crispy tiger prawns ($12.90) are cocooned in crunchy noodles that shatter upon being chomped. The prawns, dipped in the accompanying sauce, are excellent. BBQ lamb ribs ($10.90) seem a big serve, but there are just four, resting on a fluffy bed of greens. They’re fine: fatty, as expected, but with great flavour. Then we’re onto sides ’n’ stuff – a green salad, bowls of kimchi and pickled bean sprouts, and the like.

PHI PHI 2 Address: 31a Alfrieda Street, St Albans Phone: 9077 2466 It may not be saying a helluva lot, but this is the best kimchi we’ve ever had. As well, we are each given three dipping sauces for the BBQ goodies – soy/miso, a mild chilli with lemongrass, and a tamarind. Here’s what we order: Pork belly salt-chilli marinade ($12.90), ox tongue ($9.90) and chicken thigh Thai marinade ($11.90). We also get a vegetable and mushroom combo ($14). The glowing coals are brought to our table and then it’s on! The vegetables take a good deal longer than the meats, but it’s all fantastic. The meats are charred nicely, every mouthful succulent. Bottom line – this is some kind of nirvana for meat eaters. Bennie rates the pork belly the highest; I love the ox tongue the most. The vegetables are all terrific, too – three different kinds of mushroom, okra, pumpkin, eggplant, corn. The one lapse – and the only quibble – are the chat spud halves. They’ve been partially boiled before hitting the grill, but are still a little under-cooked and even (perhaps) out of place. It’s a lovely thing to see some flash on Alfrieda Street! Roadsafe Westgate Media Release for Grand Final Holiday Weekend 2016 Road Policing Operation Operation Scoreboard (AFL Grand Final long weekend from Friday 30 September to Sunday 2 October 2016) is identified as a period of potentially high risk to the Victorian community in terms of exposure to road trauma.

contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen.

Road Policing Advisor Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge said the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 30 September 2016 provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments and it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home.

Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the 2016 Operation Scoreboard Campaign for the AFL Grand Final Holiday long weekend would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000

Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (Alcohol and/or Drug) Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well rested. Speed Cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations.

12321875-LB36-16 10044119-01

Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Grand Final Holiday weekend. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a

DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!

Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.

Thailand with children? Here’s some tips… To Phuket or not to Phuket? That is the question. Especially when travelling with children. More than half a million Australians visit Thailand each year. At any one time, tens of thousands of us will be on the holiday island. Hubby and I have been visiting for years, and the welcoming friendliness of the locals is a large reason why we keep going back. We tear

along Kata Beach on jet skis, take snorkelling trips to Koh Phi Phi; and – yes – escape the clutches of timeshare touts in Patong. Now the kids are 10 and 11, we’re concerned about the sights they see. Last year, I explained to Taj the signs for “ping-pong” shows on Bangla Road weren’t referring to table tennis. Hey, we’re pretty open-minded, but sex tourism isn’t a subject at

school. Dangers also lurk outside the red light district. According to the government’s Smart Traveller website, tourists should exercise a high degree of caution, for a variety of reasons. There’s the threat of terrorist attack after explosive devices were detonated in tourist spots, including Patong Beach, in August. The frequent demonstrations against the

2014 military coup can also become volatile. Then, there’s the jet-ski scam. “Many travellers have reported that, after returning hired jet-skis, they have been confronted by gangs claiming that the tourist damaged the jet-ski,” smartraveller.gov.au says. “There have been reported instances of such gangs threatening violence, including at knifepoint, if a large sum of money in compensation for the

alleged damage is not paid.” Beware the same scam when hiring motorbikes. And, please, buy or rent helmets for the children: You’re more than six times more likely to die in a traffic-related accident in Thailand than Australia. While several beaches are beautiful – such as the northern end of Karon – most are polluted (try not to ingest too much water). And avoid the ubiquitous fish spas: infection can spread through open wounds. Still, Thailand remains the Land of Smiles, with friendly locals, delicious food, and cheap accommodation. With all this in mind, here are my top five tips for a safe family holiday in Phuket. • Stay away from Bangla Road. The onus is on patrons, not venues, to ensure safety. At any time of day or night, things can go pear-shaped. Don’t put your kids at risk. • Find accommodation around Karon or Mai Khao Beaches. The former is good for tweens or teens, the latter for small children. (Our picks, in these places, are the Centara Grand and the Holiday Inn, respectively.) • Check the height of balconies at your hotel before booking. They’re usually lower than the Australian standard, which can be dicey for little ones. • Inspect jet skis and motorbikes before renting them. Look underneath to see if there’s any damage. Buy or bring your own helmets for bike riding. • Tell the children to hold on tightly to their bags and backpacks. Snatch-and-grabs are common. Sure, take the family to Phuket. The high season runs from November to February, or March is an excellent shoulder option. But also remember to take arms against a sea of troubles. tracey.spicer@fairfaxmedia.com.au Clockwise from top: Patong, Phuket; traditional longtail boat floating on the turquoise coloured waters of Thailand; Young girl in the Land of Smiles. Avington Living offers a unique chance to downsize for people aged 50-plus. (Supplied)

NEW HOMES AND LAND – Avington Living Located at popular Point Cook, Avington Living offers people aged 50-plus an opportunity to join a community and enjoy an exceptional lifestyle for years to come. On August 27, experienced development company Hallmac unveiled Avington Living. Hallmarc director Michael Loccisano said he was delighted with the turnout of about 300 people. “Visitors were invited to explore the state-of-the-art clubhouse, stroll the grounds, see the tennis court and bowling green, and inspect a selection of display

homes,” Mr Loccisano said. “People recognised that Avington is a unique opportunity to downsize, and upgrade to a resort lifestyle,” he said. The clubhouse tour gave visitors the chance to check out the pool, games room, sauna and gym. “It was a great day, so visitors also explored shops and eatries, and the nearby Point Cook Coastal Park and waterfront,” Mr Loccisano said. “Many of the visitors were from the local area, with the younger generation coming

through to see if it was right for mum and dad. Avington Living is convenient for many families in Melbourne – in particular the western suburbs – and even as far as Geelong.” Marketing manager Alyssia Storey says one of the perks of owning at Avington Living is the low site fees. “The only ongoing cost here is fortnightly site fees, which cover ongoing facility maintenance – but we don’t charge exit fees,” she said. Avington Living is now open to the

general public, and Mr Loccisano urged people from the west, and beyond, to come and visit. “Buying an Avington house will offer people the chance to become part of a community of like-minded people. “And, with the financial benefits and peace of mind, it’s a great investment,” Mr Loccisano said. Within a few hundred metres of the waterfront, this stunning residence in a prestigious neighbourhood puts on a mighty fine show of contemporary pizzazz. Three bedrooms (and a fitted study area) are upstairs and one is downstairs, next to one of the gorgeous bathrooms. The upstairs main bedroom is extra big and has built-in wardrobes, split-system and a smashing en suite. The main bathroom up here has a deluxe Apaiser stone tub. Jarrah floorboards are under three-metre high ceilings on the ground floor, where there’s a lounge room with gas log fire. The show-stopper kitchen has stone benches, Miele appliances, integrated coffee machine and a bar area with second sink, wine fridge and rack. A delightful paved courtyard has a modern fireplace and integrated barbecue. An alarm, ducted vacuum and a double garage are other drawcards.

A lovely block-fronted Victorian on the outside, this one is slick and contemporary inside with glossy floorboards, square-set cornices on high ceilings and a white colour palette. The three carpeted bedrooms range along a long, traditional entrance hall, the main with walk-in wardrobe and en suite. The fully tiled main bathroom is a smart affair with dual basins. The living hub at the back includes an impressive kitchen with premium European appliances, a stack of cupboards and stone benches. Laundry and toilet are separate. Bifolds open right up to a timber deck, beyond which are pretty garden and lawn areas, with a shed tucked away in a corner. A split-system, ceiling fans and abundant storage are features. The property, in a sought-after street, is within a walk of The Strand and cafe precinct. Schools, a park and train station are close by.

Price: $920,000 – $990,000

It’s the first time on the market for this immaculate abode from circa late 1960s, and all the era’s features are on show. The house, built in the days when they were made to last, is on a block of about 424 square metres, which offers scope to further improve or redevelop, subject to council approval. Entry is into a hallway which heads to the right past a lounge room with two sets of original double doors, one set linking with the large kitchen-meals zone. Bedrooms (one smaller for a nursery or study) have polished floorboards, while living zones have patterned vinyl flooring so typical of the era. The kitchen has a walk-in pantry and a gas cooker. The bathroom rocks the early ’70s look and the laundry has an enclosed toilet. An undercover area sits between house and garage and there’s rear right-of-way access. A garden shed and outside toilet are other features.

NEWPORT 12 Junction Street, 3015 Gunn & Co Estate Agents: 9397 5555

Price: $1.65 million – $1.75 million

If the producers of a certain TV property program were looking for a neighbourhood in the west to find some great examples of modern architectural inspiration, they would do well to spend some time in this pocket of Newport. There are some breathtaking houses here, close to parks, schools and the city – and this is another secret treasure. Inspired by Basset Labaza Architects, this house holds its own in an impressive street. Built by Truform Construction, it stands as a benchmark for what can be achieved with imagination and daring. The interior design is bold and

luxurious. Soaring ceilings make an instant impression, as do stone benches and polished floors. Living spaces are designed to impress, and the front lounge room (with gas log fireplace) sets the mark of more to come. The kitchen features deep slabs of porcelain and Caesarstone with waterfall edges, a splashback window that overlooks the side garden, and classy charcoal cabinetry. Integrated appliances include a fridge and freezer, a dishwasher and a Smeg stainless-steel 900mm cooker. The layout has a real focus on functionality. The ground floor main

bedroom has its own living area opposite, and has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite. A rear bedroom beyond the living hub has a built-in wardrobe, as do the two upstairs, which share a retreat space and bathroom. Perhaps the most ambitious spaces are the four bathrooms. Packing a lot of practical glamour into a compact space, the main bedroom’s en suite has black and white diamond-patterned tiles and a frameless glass shower, a timber floating vanity with an oval basin and designer tapware. The upstairs bathroom is just as classy with stand-alone tub, and there’s another alongside the downstairs bedroom

and one more at the lower ground floor theatre space. Who knew basements could be so luxe? Charcoal framed doors and grey concrete block walls combine with skylights to make this space very sophisticated. An alfresco space with sliding windows overlooks the pool, an easy extension of the living zone. The alfresco space features stone pavers and a built-in barbecue. Other features include gas ducted heating, evaporative cooling, window shutters, solar panels and a remote-controlled triple garage. Eleanor Tabone

Period character and present day comfort explain why its 36 years since this three bedroom, two bathroom home was last on the market. In addition, its deep, wide rear garden illustrates the attraction of a generous allotment on a tree-lined street so close to the bay that the sea breeze is an appealing accompaniment. Scope to renovate when ready, STCA, can be considered from today’s engaging proportions including central living and dining areas, a substantial separate kitchen and a family room that reveals the garden. The option to extend upstairs is inspired by the idea of bright new spaces with bay views, a prospect that further enhances the future of a residence with a rich family past. Walk to the beach, wander to the Botanic Gardens and reach transport, schools and Nelson Place in moments.

SPORT A wise head helps create winning vibe at Footscray Two-time Footscray VFL premiership captain Jordan Russell was so physically spent after Sunday’s grand final win over Casey Scorpions that he politely requested to sit on a rubdown table for his interview to dissect the game. Considering the manic way the Bulldogs harassed the opposition ball carriers and their unwavering attack and hard running, it’s no surprise 29-year-old Russell felt the pinch after trying to keep up with the energetic young pups. Russell took great satisfaction in walking away a premiership winner, not only for the personal glory but also from seeing the fruits of his labour as a playing development coach at the club. “They keep me young, their enthusiasm, the 18, 19 and 20 year olds,” Russell told Star Weekly Weekly. “To work with them during the week and know that you’ve got a small part into why they’re playing some good footy is great.

“I feed off them and I reckon they feed off me … it’s a really good balance.” Russell was a consistent performer over 125 games in the AFL. He played 116 games with Carlton before rounding out his top-flight career with nine games at Collingwood. At VFL level, Russell is one of the best in his position. The hours of work that Russell has put into refining the skills and nous of the younger players in the Footscray team has allowed him to grow an extra leg in his own game. “I’m a lot slower and not as fit as I used to be,” he said. “But watching seven hours of footage each week, when you edit the game and code the game for the other boys, you watch hours of vision that you wouldn’t have watched when you were playing the game. It gives me a good read of what’s happening.” Footscray has ridden the wave of energy generated by the Western Bulldogs’ run to the AFL grand final.

Each time the AFL team has recorded an against-the-odds win, the VFL side has backed it up to keep the good vibes rolling. Of course, there will be some Footscray players disappointed they have not made the AFL side, but the returning Bulldogs have gelled tremendously with the VFL-listed Bulldogs to create perfect team chemistry. “It’s a credit to the footy club,” Russell said. “The last three games we’ve played, the AFL boys have played the night before or a couple of nights before and they really set the scene. “All the VFL boys spoke about how much spirit they play with and that filters down at our club. “We’ve tried to set that culture the last couple of years – when you play for Footscray Bulldogs, you’ve got to come with 100 per cent heart and be a really good teammate, that’s really showed.” Lance Jenkinson

VFL cup proves this club’s depth By Lance Jenkinson You could sense there was something brewing for Footscray from early on in Sunday’s VFL grand final at Etihad Stadium. The Bulldogs were slightly the better side in a tense and spiteful first half against a physical Casey Scorpions, but their early ascendancy didn’t show on the scoreboard as they went into the change rooms a goal in arrears at half-time. What played out over the next 30 minutes left everyone gobsmacked. Footscray erupted in the third quarter to devastate the Scorpions’ chances of winning. The Bulldogs slipped into a zone, much as they had the week before in a 119-point drubbing of Collingwood in a preliminary final where they were nigh on invincible. Last Sunday, it was a procession of attack for the Bulldogs – eight goals to nil for the third quarter. Look a little closer and you find the Scorpions were not only held goalless for the term, but they failed to trouble the scoreboard attendants at all. It was a sight to behold for Footscray fans as their side dominated at both ends with an 8.4 to 0.0 quarter against a Scorpions side that went into the game as favourites after finishing the season as minor premiers. There would be no catching the Bulldogs, who led by a comfortable 46 points at three-quarter time. The rampaging Dogs, having rattled off two emphatic wins after losing to the Scorpions by an embarrassing 70 points in week one of the finals, brought up their third straight with a 31-point victory to claim their second VFL premiership in three seasons. “I felt we were playing good footy in the first half, but I say that with reservation because we certainly weren’t finishing off our work,” Footscray coach Ashley Hansen said. “Shots on goal, inside 50 entries, clearance work – we were playing the game the way we wanted to play it. We just had to make an adjustment at half-time then, to the boys’ credit, they turned it around, really turned it on and played the way we know we can.” It was a startling reminder of how deep Footscray’s – and by extension, the Western Bulldogs’ – list runs. The combination of youth and experience, AFL and VFL-listed players, and returning Western Bulldogs is a potent mix when all the ingredients come together. Lin Jong, the midfielder who thought his season was over after breaking his collarbone 17 days earlier, was inspiring for teammates in a Norm Goss Medal-winning performance.

2016 VFL grand final Footscray Bulldogs 13.19 (97) d Casey Scorpions 10.6 (66) Footscray Bulldogs Goals: Jamieson 3, Long 2, Campbell 2, Dale, Nash, Lynch, Williams, Hannan, Tashevski-Beckwith. Best: Jong, Stevens, Webb, Russell, Jamieson, Adcock. Casey Scorpions Goals: T Smith 3, Weideman 2, Hulett, Trengove, Newton, Scott, White. Best: Oliver, T Smith, Dunn, J Smith, Kennedy, Newton. Crowd: 17,348 at Etihad Stadium. At no stage did Jong flinch, no matter how much the Scorpions tested out his shoulder. He just got on with the task, gut-running all game, winning centre clearances at will and throwing

56 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 28, 2016

his body into the firing line. “Just a really special performance from a special player,” Hansen said. “We saw how much the football club and playing in a finals series means to Lin. “For him to perform as he did today is a testament to himself. I thought if we got a good contribution out of him, we would’ve been pretty happy, but for him to do what he did was remarkable.” Jong was not alone in that dominant midfield. Lukas Webb and Koby Stevens had the ball on a string, their cause helped by the silver service of ruckmen Will Minson and Tom Campbell. Will that be Minson’s last game in Bulldogs colours? His extended salute to his adoring fans post-game intimated that, though perhaps he was just lapping up the adulation a little more than the rest of the team. Jed Adcock was unshakeable, latching on to 12 tackles to go with 18 disposals and seven inside 50s. An ever-present feature of Footscray’s 2016 premiership was its reliance on the VFL-listed players.

There have been rounds when the Bulldogs have scoured the local leagues for talent, at which times their VFL-listed players have gone to another level. Nick Jamieson, who kicked three goals, Lauchlan Dalgleish, Anthony Barry, Alex Greenwood and Andrew Tasheski-Beckwith had the biggest impact of that group in the grand final, but the rest played their roles to perfection. Rising young Bulldogs Bailey Dale, Brad Lynch, Bailey Williams, Mitch Honeychurch and Roarke Smith offered fans at the top level a glimpse into the future, and it looks bright. This is a Bulldogs side built on teamwork and an understanding and adherence to a system, and on those two accounts, they could not be faulted. “It’s a young group who are playing for one another. They want to get better and are driving standards; they want to win,” Hansen said. “When you’ve got that mix, it’s really easy to coach.”

Young guns answer call

IN THE DOGHOUSE

By Lance Jenkinson ■ The

weekend could not have been better for Bulldogs supporters. Saturday night was a win for the ages and on Sunday the VFL boys overpowered the Casey Scorpions to bring another cup to the trophy cabinet. It was great to see so many of the young Bulldogs list experience the VFL triumph. The building blocks of the Bulldogs list have been very well assembled. I will be intrigued to see the next step in the career of Will Minson. I have always liked Will and enjoyed his company, and I hope that if he wants to continue to play he does so at the highest level. He certainly gave the Bulldogs great service after arriving at the club in 2003.

■ Can

the Bulldogs win the 2016 AFL premiership? Why not? They have defied the odds all year and faced every hurdle with grit, determination, belief and a commodity I think everyone has under-valued in this team – football talent. You cannot get to where they are purely on resilience, passion and never giving up. That will take you some of the way, but the talent in this group deserves acknowledgement. They are well-drilled and also have a fair degree of X factor that makes them tough to beat. It is a new experience for the club, one it will embrace and enjoy. But make no mistake – the Bulldogs are there to win. The fans will be more nervous than the players.

Sons of the west ride wave of momentum Sports reporter Lance Jenkinson takes a look at the 2016 AFL grand final

The Western Bulldogs will be on the prowl for their second premiership, while the Sydney Swans will be out to make it three flags since 2005. The two grand finalists could not have taken more contrasting roads to September. The Swans were central to talk of the all-important top-four finish and double chance. Despite integrating a number of exciting youngsters into the line-up, the Swans landed the minor premiership, underlining the professionalism of the Harbour City club. The Western Bulldogs had challenges of their own, particularly an injury list the length of a chef’s shopping docket. The Bulldogs overcame those obstacles and unearthed some gun youngsters in the process to reach the finals. Before injuries hit, the Bulldogs were considered a top-four chance, but could not get enough continuity in their line-up and had to settle for seventh.

The road to the grand final has hardly been charmed for either Sydney or the Bulldogs. The Swans gained no benefit in finishing top, having to face the Giants in a “home” qualifying final at ANZ Stadium, a game they lost. They dusted themselves off to thrash Adelaide at the SCG and then travelled to Melbourne for a quick kill of Geelong at the MCG. While it may have seemed like a forlorn task, finishing seventh proved no hindrance to the Bulldogs, who showed they can win anywhere at anytime. The Bulldogs caused a boilover in Perth to beat West Coast, ended Hawthorn’s chances of a four-peat at the MCG and beat the Giants in a heart stopper in Sydney. Players to watch? We could point out Lance Franklin, Luke Parker or Dan Hannebery in the Swans, or Marcus Bontempelli, Luke Dahlhaus or Tom Liberatore in the Bulldogs – there will be stars

galore in the grand final, which is why they are the last two sides left in the running for the premiership. But we’ll talk excitement machines instead – the players who can turn the game. For Sydney, that man is Gary Rohan. He can make the opposition look extremely slow in open space and has the knack of bobbing up at key moments for big goals. For the Bulldogs, Jason Johannisen is one who has the Bulldogs faithful standing up in unison when he gathers the ball at half-back and goes on breathtaking runs. The Western Bulldogs have won the past two meetings between the sides. But both were by less than a kick, so there is little to separate the two sides in the head-to-head stakes. My tip? The Bulldogs in a thriller. Sydney will have to take on a side riding a wave of momentum and will also confront a rabid 23rd man who will do everything other than erect a “Welcome to Hell” sign to put the Swans off their game.

WRFL presentation night last week bought to an end an historic season in the league with Deer Park reigning supreme, creating its own slice of history and capping off the season with Kwame McHarg winning the Barry Priest Medal. Kwame is an eye-catching player with silky skills and a laconic attitude. He is one of those players who makes the game look easy. The Alan Smith Medal went to North Footscray’s Kieran Murphy a hard-working, pacey on-baller. Todd Lawrie won division 3’s Ron And Thelma Angwin Medal after a great season on ball and up forward with the Tarneit Titans. Rookie of the year went to Altona’s Kelly Pickard, who should have a crack at VFL level. One of the night’s highlights was the raffle win by outgoing WRFL chief executive Bob Tregear. Changes to the points system and the introduction of a salary cap will make 2017 very interesting in local footy. Kevin Hillier

Unearthing young gems over the past two seasons has no doubt accelerated the Western Bulldogs’ push for a long-awaited AFL grand final berth. The evenness of the playing list and a new-found depth at the club have ensured that whenever injury or poor form has struck, there has always been a player ready to step up and perform. And the good news for Bulldogs’ fans is that the production line is not grinding to a halt any time soon. You need to look no further than Footscray’s VFL grand final triumph over Casey Scorpions at Etihad Stadium on Sunday for evidence. The Bulldogs were brimming with young talent that will be unleashed in the big league in upcoming seasons. Bulldogs’ coach Luke Beveridge could already confidently call on Lukas Webb, Bailey Dale, Mitch Honeychurch, Bailey Williams and the injured Nathan Hrovat, just to name a few youngsters, who could step into the AFL team and have a positive impact. A rookie lister is starting to turn heads as well. Brad Lynch, number 11 in the 2015 AFL rookie draft, was electrifying on the half-back flank for Footscray during VFL finals. He has speed to burn, is daring with ball in hand and equally adept on either foot, so has the polish to go with his flair. Lynch arrived at the Western Bulldogs as a raw teenager, but had already played senior football with Swan Districts in the WAFL. At 19, he appears set for a bright future at the kennel. Moreover, Lynch does not see his future anywhere other than Footscray, despite moving from the west coast to Melbourne on contract. “I’ve loved every minute of being over here and I’m hoping to stay again next year,” he said. Lynch wants to grow with the talented young players on the Western Bulldogs’ list. He has been impressed by the togetherness, hunger and football nous of the next gen Bulldogs. “We just have a ruthless attitude towards footy,” Lynch said. “We have so much depth and we’re so young. “We’ve learned the game plan so quickly, and it’s just showing right now in how well we’re playing.” Lynch has been surrounded with good role models in his time in senior football, thanking former Freemantle and St Kilda player Craig Callaghan and Footscray teammate and Western Bulldogs development coach Jordan Russell, in particular, for fast-tracking his development. You could not wipe the smile from Lynch’s face after the premiership glory.
