The buzz building around the “Sons of the West” is reaching fever pitch as the Western Bulldogs roar to within one match of the AFL grand final. The rampaging Bulldogs bundled reigning premier Hawthorn out of the AFL premiership race in ruthless fashion in Friday night’s semi-final, revelling in the atmosphere of a near club-record crowd of 87,823 at the MCG. The crowd was the third largest in Bulldog history, with the victory attracting the biggest television audience of the 2016 season to date, peaking at almost two million viewers. The 23-point win might have surprised some, but not diehard fans such as cheer squad stalwart Irene Chatfield. Watching her beloved Dogs train before the Hawthorn game, Ms Chatfield told Star Weekly they would not only beat the Hawks but do so “by more than 22 points”. “I don’t think there’s any need to worry at all – our players are just superb, they’ll stand tall,” she said. “We’re going to clip their wings and come home with a great win, singing our song; that’s what you want to hear at the end of the game.” Ms Chatfield plans to bus her way to Sydney for Saturday’s preliminary final clash against the in-form Greater Western Sydney Giants, the final hurdle standing between the Bulldogs and their first grand final appearance since 1961 and a tilt at their first flag since 1954. If the Dogs can shake the curse that has seen them lose seven straight preliminary finals, she plans to take her 91-year-old mum to the grand final the following weekend. Coach Luke Beveridge praised his team after Friday night’s win, but warned players there was still work to do. “We’re down to the last four – imagine what’s happening out there with your supporters and fan base,” he said. “Imagine how euphoric they would feel. We’ve got to enjoy that sense and understand it … put it in a bottle and take it to Sydney next week.” The Dogs are also barking in the VFL, with Footscray annihilating Collingwood by 119 points on Saturday to book a berth in Sunday’s grand final against Casey Scorpions at Etihad Stadium. A rising tide of red, white and blue is appearing as homes and businesses show their support for the “team of the mighty west”. With football fever running high, Hobsons Bay council has been approached to change the name of Seaholme’s Surf Street to Sutton Street,

Language wins through By Benjamin Millar The west’s only bilingual school program has been saved after a heartfelt campaign by parents. The Vietnamese language immersion learning program at Footscray Primary School was set to be dumped until a fight-back by parents, and intervention by the education minister, salvaged the program for next year. Star Weekly last week reported that parents were calling for a freeze on the axing of the long-running practice of classes being taught in Vietnamese for up to five hours a week. A petition circulated around the school and online, and quickly attracted more than 600

signatures. Western suburbs upper house MP Bernie Finn told Parliament on Thursday it was “important that this decision be reversed”. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said education minister James Merlino took the matter up with the department of education late last week. Late Friday, parents were notified by the school that the decision had been halted, and more consultation would be held next term. Acting principal Bridget McLaughlin wrote to parents and carers saying the school will review the decision to discontinue the program. Parent Nicholas Cowall, a vocal critic of the original decision, praised the school for reversing its stance.

“We believe that the Vietnamese bilingual program can be made to work for the school and the community,” he said. “Consultation about the fate of the bilingual program at FPS should involve the whole school community.” Vietnamese Community Australia Victorian chapter president Viv Nguyen said she had alerted school principal Philip Fox to the concerns of the Vietnamese community. “From the parents’ point of view, they were not feeling that they have been heard or considered,” she said. “I always feel having two languages is better than one.” Education minister James Merlino said language and culture are an important part of keeping schools at the heart of communities.

Lalor MP Joanne Ryan has urged the federal government to come clean on its plans for the Laverton RAAF base. The call comes following confusion over the future of the base, with RAAF chief Air Marshal Leo Davies telling reporters in Canberra last Thursday that the air force wants the site closed down and units consolidated. Defence Minister Marise Payne told the Senate she wanted to clarify the government’s position on both sites. “I would make it clear the government is not considering the closure of [either base],” she said. Laverton, part of RAAF Williams Point Cook, is home to the defence language school and other academic and technical training facilities. If closed, its units would be relocated to Queensland or South Australia. The land would then be sold off by the federal government. Air Marshal Davies said if the move was approved by the government, the two units would be closed in 15 years. Ms Ryan said: “Obviously, and rightly so, defence will make decisions to dispose of or consolidate defence assets and infrastructure based on needs and capabilities. It is important, however, that … transparent processes be followed.” She urged the government to come clean on the timeline and plans, expressing her concerns for local jobs that could be moved interstate. “The government also needs to come clean on its plans for community consultation” she said. Top Melbourne fashion designers are campaigning to save the last pleating workshop in Victoria. Simon Zdraveski, owner of Specialty Pleaters at Williamstown North, says without urgent support, the 80-year-old bespoke business will fold by Christmas. Lost would be local access to the rare trade and hundreds of paper “moulds”, or patterns, compiled since the business was founded by a Fitzroy family in the 1930s. Mr Zdraveski wants to keep Specialty Pleaters going, but it is not viable. His aged machines need replacing and there are “astronomical” overheads. Fashion designer Kara Baker, a client for 30 years, is so alarmed she has started a social media campaign to drum up business and seek government and industry funding. “Once this skill is lost, it’s gone forever,” she said. She said Specialty Pleaters had suffered from fewer school uniforms using pleats and clothing manufacturing going offshore. But pleating is still hot in fashion. Japanese fashion guru Issey Miyake has an entire clothing brand devoted to it – Pleats Please – and recent collections by Gucci, Dior, Roberto Cavalli and Valentino have featured pleating. Local exponents include Toni Maticevski and Le Louvre Melbourne, which still sell a “pleated model” dress from a 1930s design. Melbourne couture designer Jason Grech says the prospect of losing Specialty Pleaters “makes me really sad”, and vowed to incorporate pleating in his next collection. Mr Grech engaged Specialty Pleaters to style a white pleated silk organza collar used in a key campaign image for the 2016 Melbourne Spring Fashion Week. “I rang up Simon [Zdraveski] and I can tell you, if it wasn’t for him I would not have been able to pull that off,” Mr Grech said “He turned what I needed around for me in two days. Now, if he’s not there, where do I go?” Fitzroy bridal couturier Gwendolynne said

Police hunt cat killers By Goya Dmytryshchak Police are now investigating four reports of pet cats being shot in Altona North. As reported by Star Weekly last week, one cat was put down and another had its leg shattered in two separate shooting incidents in the vicinity of Millers and Blackshaws roads. Vet X-rays showed both cats were shot with what appeared to be a BB gun. The first cat was euthanased after being shot twice in the abdomen on September 7. The second cat had his right femur blown apart after being shot twice on September 8.

The cat underwent surgery to save his leg, and still has one pellet lodged in it that may be required to be extracted for evidence. A Victoria Police spokeswoman last week confirmed two more reports of cats being shot and killed in Altona North during the past fortnight. “Police are investigating reports that four cats were shot in the Altona North area,” she said last week. “It is believed the incidents occurred in the past week, resulting in three cats being killed and one suffering injuries.” Police say the perpetrator could face multiple

charges apart from those related to aggravated cruelty. RSPCA Victoria acting senior inspector Lisa Calleja said a joint investigation was under way due to the use of a firearm. “We currently have one case under investigation, which is a joint investigation with Victoria Police – the lead agency. We are unable to discuss the details. “If anyone has confirmed information of an incident of cruelty, we encourage them to make a report, either to RSPCA Victoria at www.rspca.org or by calling 9224 2222, or by contacting Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

A symbol of freedom The completion of Footscray’s Saigon Welcome Arch marks the end of a journey more than 20 years long. The $1 million arch, at the southern end of Leeds Street, welcomes visitors to Footscray’s Little Saigon and features a pair of fabled Vietnamese Lac birds alongside other motifs, such as a turtle shell, bronze drum and boat. A big crowd turned out for its opening on Saturday, built as part of a $12.5 million Little Saigon precinct redevelopment that includes a new multi-level parking block with ground floor retail space. The state government provided $420,000 towards the project, which celebrates the contribution the Vietnamese community has made to Footscray, specifically, and Australia more broadly. A further $360,000 came from Maribyrnong council, and the remaining $200,000 was raised

by the Vietnamese Australian community. Vietnamese Community Australia Victorian chapter president Viv Nguyen said the welcome arch was a demonstration of the sheer determination and commitment of a community that embraced its chance to escape atrocity and desperation. “Many of the people in the audience this morning would remember their first day in Australia,” she said. “A T-shirt, a pair of pants, thongs – and an overwhelming feeling of the freedom found in this new country.” Benjamin Millar

Kids lap up lessons About 40 children from Altona North Primary School are taking part in Life Saving Victoria’s multicultural learn-to-swim program. Hobsons Bay council has awarded LSV a $10,000 grant over the next two years for its water safety and familiarisation program, which includes swimming lessons at Newport’s Bayfit Leisure Centre. Hobsons Bay has seen a steady increase in refugees from Burma (Karen, Chin and Kachin communities) and a large increase in the Indian and Chinese communities. LSV multicultural projects manager David Holland said the program was not just about water safety; it also aimed to provide “aquatic role models”. New hub a hot spot By Goya Dmytryshchak Officially opened at the start of this month, the new $9.3 million Newport Community Hub has smashed library attendance records. On the opening weekend of September 2, 2709 visitors attended celebrations at the new civic precinct at Paine Reserve. More than 3700 people visited within the first five days of opening – more than the temporary library at The Substation had in three months. The new building and restored Mechanics Institute includes a library, maternal child health services, senior citizen and youth services, and meeting spaces. Hobsons Bay council commissioned Haskell architects to design the building. The company already had an impressive track record through the Altona North and Altona Meadows libraries. The Newport project had a controversial start when original plans were leaked showing no bookshelves – a “bookless library”. The council had considered a proposal for people to order books online and collect them from a chute-like system after internal research showed people were increasingly using libraries to read newspapers or go online. A community group called Save Newport Library quickly formed to campaign against the plan and it was promptly shelved. Then there was a war of words at a public council meeting over what to call the building. A community reference group had shortlisted three names, none of which contained the word “library”. Newport Community Hub was chosen to maintain consistency with Laverton Community Hub. Visitors to the new hub show no sign of dropping off – as of last week, more than 7800 people had been through the doors.

Mr Anbeek, Startup Victoria’s business operations manager, said VU wants to boost the entrepreneurial mindset among staff and students and also in the broader western suburbs community. “The space is open for everyone although there is a big focus on the west.” The opening of The Hanger coincides with the launch of the Startup Truck, which will take expertise and resources from Footscray to the rest of the west. The Hanger has already helped about 20 projects. Footscray Steeler nails Rio gold By Benjamin Millar Footscray athlete Josh Hose and his Australian Steelers teammates have secured a dramatic win over arch-rival the US to collect back-to-back Paralympics gold medals. The wheelchair rugby gold came from a 59-58 double-overtime win in Rio in front of a record crowd of 12,500 in the early hours of Monday morning. The bitter rivals were locked at 12-12 after the first quarter, 37-37 after three quarters and

49-49 at the end of regular time. The sides were 54 apiece at the end of the first overtime period, with Australia edging home by a point in the second overtime period with seconds to spare. The match was the last across all sports at the Rio Games and followed gold for Hose and the Steelers at the 2012 London Paralympics. Australia had never beaten the US at a Paralympic Games or world championships. Australia has become the first nation to win two Paralympic gold medals and a world championship in a four-year period.

Hose, 29, sustained quadriplegia in a car accident on Australia Day in 2005. He made his national wheelchair rugby debut in 2009 after being inspired to take up the sport when he watched matches at the 2008 summer Paralympics in Beijing.

Children dressed in the Italian tricolour or as their favourite character during the school’s Italian Week. Some donned masks and costumes fit for the Venice Carnival, while others chose the stripes and straw boater of a gondolier. Teacher Rosita Savoia said Seabrook Primary, which is an International Baccalaureate school, had a long history of teaching Italian, and it took an “immersion” approach to learning.

‘Angel’ meals win award By Goya Dmytryshchak The Altona Senior Citizens Club has been recognised for its role in a work-for-the-dole program helping job seekers and older residents. Club president Sue King worked with Djerriwarrh work-for-the-dole co-ordinators to develop a program in which job seekers cook three-course lunches to serve at the Altona Senior Citizens Centre. Seniors are invited to attend lunches on Tuesdays and Thursdays for either a gold-coin donation or free of charge. The program was last week recognised in Djerriwarrh’s awards in the categories of most outstanding individual placement activity and most outstanding work-like experience activity. The club was also recognised for publishing The Nutritious Cook Book, which was awarded for providing the most outstanding community benefit. Seniors voted for their favourite meals cooked by job seekers and the winning dishes went into the cookbook. Ms King refers to the job seekers as her “kitchen angels”. “Honestly, we’ve had just such a great relationship with each project with our kitchen angels,” she said. “They’re really grouse. Some of them are volunteering time specifically on their own.”

Jail for historic sex attacks A man who sexually assaulted his biological daughter and stepdaughter over nine years has been jailed for four months. The man, 71, pleaded guilty in the County Court to two charges of unlawful and indecent assault of a girl and four charges of indecent assault, committed between 1976 and 1984. The offending happened as the family moved around Melbourne’s north west, including at Glenroy, Sunshine, Newport, Seaholme and Altona North. Two of the charges relate to the indecent assault of the man’s stepdaughter, which started when she was aged between 12 and 14. One of the charges related to a series of indecent assaults against the eldest of his five biological children. The court heard that between 1981 and 1982 the family lived at Newport, where the eldest daughter and stepdaughter lived in separate bungalows at the back. The offender would abuse them under the guise of going to the outside toilet. He would also bring his daughter to work and indecently assault her. She was made a ward of the state aged 13. The offender was arrested in August 2015 and admitted his sexual offending. Judge Liz Gaynor said she took into account his remorse and rehabilitation when sentencing him to two years and two weeks, with 20 months and two weeks suspended. He has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

The Echo Collective rehearses for its fringe Festival show, Leap. (Damjan Janevski)

Life-like leaps for Footscray A group of performers is taking a leap of faith in Footscray with a new production for the Fringe Festival. Echo Collective’s Leap, directed by Joana Pires, is an interactive performance in which audience members’ real-life experiences are adapted into theatre on the spot. Stories will be collected and the Echo Collective actors will play them back using drama, movement and music. Winner of the 2014 Maribyrnong Inclusive Recognition Award for best inclusive art group, Echo Collective is led by young actors, directors, filmmakers, musicians and performers with disabilities. Leap will be produced by Arts Access Victoria in partnership with Maribyrnong council. Performances will be staged at the Bluestone Church Arts Space, 10A Hyde Street, from 7.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets $15/10. Details: www.melbournefringe.com.au

Legends line the trail Renowned Brooklyn artist Geoffrey Ricardo has been awarded a $330,000 commission for public art works along the Kororoit Creek shared trail at Altona North. His work titled, A strange trail of beasts, spirits and guardians will feature eight figures,

each about three metres tall, spaced along 7.5 kilometres of the trail, which will eventually connect Geelong Road to Cherry Lake and Millers Road. The artwork was commissioned by Hobsons Bay council and will be funded by Toyota Australia as part of the latter’s $1.8 million contribution towards the trail’s construction.

The council’s art project advisory group unanimously selected Ricardo’s work from 44 submissions. Ricardo said he looked for things that would resonate with people. “People have been prominent around that area for a very long time … Indigenous and then waves of immigrants – they’re guardians reflecting different aspects of the area.”

Our future in their hands Young people across Maribyrnong are being urged to have their say as part of a school holiday event designed to inspire change. The one-day Changemakers 2.0 conference will bring together inspirational speakers and a series of workshops at Phoenix Youth Hub from 10am to 4pm next Wednesday, September 28. The free program, organised by the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC), will cover issues such as gender equality, discrimination, asylum seeker and refugee policies, and engagement between young people and government. The forum has been created with help from the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, the Western Bulldogs’ Whitten Project, the Western Youth People’s Independence Network and Women’s

Health West. Omar Al Kassab, who fled Syria as a refugee, will share the story of his journey. MYAC member Hoda Qani says she wants the forum to help young people feel empowered to make change. “If they feel something isn’t right, they shouldn’t be afraid to advocate against it,” she says. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald wants the event to give young people a sense of ways in which they can create change. “We want to empower them, arming them with practical skills and knowledge. It’s young people who hold the future of our city in their hands.” More details: www.phoenixyouth.com.au or register at www.changemakers2.eventbrite.com.au

An ancient Maltese tradition practiced deep in the heart of St Albans has won two artists $10,000 in The Substation’s contemporary art prize. Sonia Leber and David Chesworth were awarded this month at Newport for their 11-minute video, One from Mosta, Two from Zabbar Zabbar. It features members of the Maltese club, Klabb Ghannejja Maltin, engaged in an anachronistic tradition, in which improvised and often inflammatory grievances are publicly aired in song. Ms Leber said the tradition of spirtu pront, which translates to quick wit, developed in the working class bars of Malta. “We found this club in St Albans where the men keep up this tradition in Australia, beyond what they might keep up in Malta,” she said.

“When we went to the club, of course, we didn’t understand what they were doing. “It’s extremely skilful because it’s in a very ancient form of Maltese language, and it has to fit to the musical form and it has to be funny and witty and relevant. “The idea is that there has to be mild form of argument that’s spicy enough to maintain the argument over a period of time, but not too personal and not likely to create too much offence, because then you have real conflict.” West Footscray resident Laresa Kosloff won the $2000 Westie Award for her two-minute video, I can’t do anything anything. It was made during her artistic residency in Prato, Italy, and features local residents and visiting art students repeating the title phrase. Goya Dmytryshchak

MY PLACE Adam Chalabi, who started playing violin at age four, is first violinist with Tinalley String Quartet and performs for audiences across the world. He tells Goya Dmytryshchak why he has settled in Seaholme.

My wife and I lived in Williamstown in 2011 … we moved up to Brisbane in 2014 and then back down to Melbourne. We wanted to be in the same area, but Williamstown has gotten crazy. So we looked in Seaholme and Altona, really liked it and bought there. What do you like about Seaholme? It’s so close to the water, but also it’s incredibly close to the city. I think it’s just a little community there, which we’ve always really liked. We liked that in Williamstown and it’s certainly got the same feel in Seaholme and Altona. I love the area down by the Seaholme pier towards the dog beach – it’s very peaceful – and that area of the Esplanade a bit up from Altona towards Seaholme is very nice and quiet and lovely. I really like the train station at Seaholme – I think it’s very cute. What would you change? Pokemon. I hate Pokemon in Altona. I cannot believe how many people are on

the Altona pier, just wandering around with their phones like zombies. I hate that Altona is a Pokemon hotspot. I don’t really understand the game, but there’s obviously something going on at the Altona pier. Do you have a favourite local cafe or eatery? Yes, definitely – several, in fact. Within Altona, my favourite place is Hangar1one2, but I also love Bezirk cafe, which is just around the corner from us. I think there are lots of lovely places in Newport as well – Leroys and Birds of a Feather and Odd Spot are all great places to brunch. What would people be surprised to know about you? I’ve watched every single series of Friends several times over. Tinalley String Quartet presents Speak Less Than You Know – “the musical language of Beethoven’s quartets paired with the spoken words of his letters and memoirs”, with a special guest, actor John Bell – at the Melbourne Recital Centre on October 4.

DARREN BERRY – FORMER AUSTRALIAN CRICKETER FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? DB: My cooking skills are average, to be honest. I’m very lucky I have a lovely wife, who takes care of me and our three children. I can do the basics, and will occasionally whip up basics for dinner. Happy to do a weekend breakfast order of toast and cereal for family or – if I’m feeling really creative – perhaps bacon and eggs or pancakes for the kids.

HAVING A BALL

I love everything about spring in Melbourne. I especially love the Spring Racing Carnival, and all the fabulous food and functions that go along with it. But if you’re holding a do at your place, and you’re after a fresh twist on the traditional chicken and champagne theme, I encourage you to give these easy and economical appetisers a whirl. You don’t have to get your hands dirty with these; you don’t have to shred a barbecued chook, and, if you want to make some ahead of time, they’re suitable to freeze.

FB: What is your signature dish? DB: Nothing special, sadly, but, in days gone by, perhaps an old recipe from mum was marinated soy sauce lamb chops with vegies. Basic, but bloody nice. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? DB: Oh, I’d kill for my mum’s Sunday roast with all the trimmings, followed by her special dish – sago plum pudding with whipped cream was out of this world. I’ve been married for 20 years, and the wife never served up the sago plum pudding once. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person?

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

DB: Not massive on the food shows anymore, although I did watch the first few editions of MasterChef, and Matt’s arrogance used to make me laugh. FB: What is your favourite food? DB: Being a country boy, Sunday roast was a winner growing up, and roast pork with crackle and apple sauce easily satisfies me. If I am going out for dinner, I absolutely love Japanese teppanyaki.

THAI CHICKEN BALLS 500g chicken mince ¼ cup oyster sauce 2 cloves crushed garlic 1 tablespoon self-raising flour 1 tablespoon fish sauce ½ cup finely chopped coriander leaves Two-thirds of a cup coconut milk

Preheat oven to 200 degrees celsius (180 fan forced). Grease two 12-hole non-stick mini muffin pans. Combine all ingredients and place rounded tablespoons full of mixture into muffin holes. Bake for around 15 minutes or until cooked through. Turn out and serve hot with soy sauce and sliced chillies, or sweet chilli sauce.

FB: What is your favourite drink? DB: Egg Flip Big M was a favourite growing up. Don’t mind a nice bottle of red if I’m out for dinner with friends. Beer – I’m a Carlton Draught man, or partial to most clean Japanese beers. FB: Which people would you most like to invite to dinner? DB: Strange mix I guess – Demi Moore, Nelson Mandela, Merv Hughes, Clint Eastwood and my parents (sadly lost them when I was young) FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? DB: Kitchen tip for any young bachelor: marry someone who is a good cook. A way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!

As its architect-designed façade suggests, this place has a bang-on, contemporary-luxe take on interior design, with little expense spared. The three bedrooms – two upstairs – each have very chic en suites. Extending from front to back, the glam living hub is all white and soft-grey, with a gas log fire and a big picture window the keynotes. Seamless glossy cabinetry in here conceals a laundry. The showstopper kitchen has LED lighting, a fantastic Corian cantilevered island bench, a stack of seamless cabinetry and all the mod-cons, including two stainless-steel cylindrical rangehoods. Split-systems, alarm and three digital cameras, a double garage, and a private deck with swim-spa are among the inclusions. Nelson Place dining precinct and waterfront are within a stroll.

Rubbing shoulders with heritage housing in a popular street – and within an amble of schools and Gamon and Charles street cafes and eateries – this brick veneer on about 772 square metres has a contemporary interior and scads of space. Polished floorboards run throughout, wall paint is crisply neutral and plantation shutters are white. Each of four bedrooms has built-in wardrobes. They share two ultra-smart bathrooms. The well-equipped kitchen has storage galore and all mod-cons. The living hub includes a lit workstation framed by shelves and cabinetry. The very neat backyard has a detached games room/studio/office with polished concrete floor that opens to a covered pergola. Property experts love identifying suburbs they reckon could be the next “it” thing in real estate – Kingsville is one such suburb. This beautiful 1910 Edwardian dwelling with its stunning façade stands out with its period bones on show. Exquisite fretwork, turned-timber posts and a lovely leadlight panelled front door herald more beauty to come. In 2005, the house underwent renovations but the clever architects did a solid job of combining old with the new. Period-style features such as 2.8-metre ceilings, picture rails, stepped cornices,

Gator lives for the moment By Lance Jenkinson Altona Gators rising basketball star Cassidy Gould is often told by coach Randy Shanklin to simply “trust the process”. Gould’s ability to focus on the here and now and not look too far beyond the next training session, upcoming game or even the next play has worked out quite well so far. The 16-year-old combo guard recently wrapped up the youth league title with the Gators, signed on as a development player with WNBL club Melbourne Boomers and was invited to the (under-19) Australian Gems’ training squad last weekend. But Gould remains grounded, sticking to that one piece of advice. “He’s a really good coach,” Gould said. “He helps us understand the game and to learn to read the game more and not just go through the motions on a play. “We might have a rough quarter, but just keep believing in what you do and you’ll eventually see the outcome.” Gould showed her talent in youth league this season. The Williamstown resident had impressive all-round statistics with averages of 12.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and two steals a game. It was the team’s achievement of winning a title and earning promotion to the top flight that made Gould most chirpy. “Our team had worked so hard throughout the year,” she said. “We’d come from a pretty rough season the year before. “It was an amazing feeling to get through the finals and get the win.” Gould has been an avid follower of the Women’s National Basketball League. Now the former Williamstown Magic junior is getting a chance to live the life of a WNBL

star with the Melbourne Boomers. “It was a bit of shock and a bit of amazement coming into training with girls I’ve admired watching play as I’ve grown up,” Gould said. “Being on the court with them and training with them is definitely another opportunity to improve. “As a young development player, I might not get a game this season – but you never know.” Gould is not one to indulge too much in considering what her future in the game may look like. But when pressed on her goals, Gould speaks of her desire to make the Vic Metro under-18 team again, where she hopes she can have a bigger impact with an extra year of basketball under her belt. And she tells of her ultimate dream of playing “in the WNBL or possibly overseas”. “You never know what’s going to happen,” said Gould, who looks up to Opals captain and Phoenix Mercury three-time All Star Penny Taylor. One thing Gould can promise is that she will leave no stone unturned in getting the best out of her ability. “I just want to improve myself and keep working as hard as I can,” she said. “Try and get the most out of it and not waste the amazing opportunities I’ve been given.” Gould is the monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly. Gould will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes that will assist her in achieving her sports goals. The Don Deeble award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and/or national level.

creating some fresh ones in the new rooms. “Despite our sub-standard facilities in the past, we’ve been a successful club, winning premierships across the grades,” Wetzler said. “The club is now largely reborn. We’re very bullish about our future.” Footscray ANA wants to see continued

growth in the junior ranks. The club has announced that no junior will have to pay fees to play cricket this season. ANA will have teams from under-11s to under-17s, as well as running In2Cricket, T20 Blast and Girls Only programs. “It’s all about getting more juniors to the club,” Wetzler said.

Falcons’ Lind takes top netball honour The move of City West Falcons’ Maggie Lind from goals to mid-court is complete, with Lind taking out the Victorian Netball League’s top honour. Lind was recently announced the Margaret Caldow medalist as the most valuable player in the championship division, with 55 votes. Lind’s consistency was the key to her season, polling votes in the first 13 matches; after that votes were not released publicly. The 22-year-old, who wasn’t expecting to be in the mix for the award, said this year she felt more settled in the mid-court. “It’s my third season in the mid-court and I found my feet a bit more. I know the position. “It took me a while to get used to it, but I prefer it over goals now,” she said. “It helps having talented players around me.” Lind said being mid-court allowed her to be a bit more crafty, and the move had been the best motivator for her after spending most of her career as a shooter. For Lind, it’s a long way from a couple of years ago when she said she fell out of love with the game. “I’m starting to enjoy it now,” she said. “It’s a huge commitment … I have been playing since I was 11, and I’m now 22.” Lind’s award caps off a strong season for the Falcons who made another grand final. They lost by one goal in a thriller to Melbourne University Lightning, but Lind said they had exceeded expectations. “It was a rebuilding year, with a really young team,” she said. “To even play in a grand final, we did well.” Lind is hoping to get an opportunity in the new Australian Netball League, but also has a back-up plan if that fails. “I have started to do rugby 7s on the side. I’m striving to still make the next level in netball. Rugby is a good back-up plan.” Lind was also named in the championship division team of the year. Fellow Falcon Kath Knott was named in the team of the year, and took out the hot-shot award for leading goal scorer while Falcons co-captain and grand final MVP Emily Post was the division 1 MVP. ■ What a week it is for anyone lucky enough to be a Bulldogs’ supporter, especially those in the west, in the heartland of an incredible experience. It may turn out to be a historic experience, who knows. The Footscray Bulldogs will run onto the oval at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to contest the VFL grand final against Casey, less than 24 hours after the AFL side tries to win a spot in its first grand final since 1961. Win, lose or draw, it is something very special for Bulldogs fans. The venue for the AFL game (Spotless Stadium) is not ideal. Forget the Giants and Bulldogs fans, a preliminary final deserves better. If I were a Giants supporter, I would want my boys playing on the big stage, a preliminary final on the MCG. After all, that’s the venue where you win the premiership, and nothing prepares you for the real thing like a pressure-packed dress rehearsal. To have just 24,000 fans at a game of this importance is a bit disrespectful – players deserve and have earned the big occasion. Mind you I am sure there are some players who don’t care at all where the game is being played. Go Doggies. ■ Williamstown bowed out of the VFL season last week after a disappointing showing against Casey in the preliminary final. The Seagulls are a very proud club demanding success, and they will bounce back bigger and better in 2017. Werribee saw the first sod of dirt turned on the redevelopment of Chirnside Park last week, with a bevy of local pollies in attendance. Great to see Pauline Nicol, widow of the late John, involved, very fitting. The Tigers face a nomadic 2017 season, but like Williamstown endured a few years back, the end result will be well worth it. Werribee’s Bruce Montgomery Trophy presentation night is on Thursday, September 29, at Moonee Valley Racing Club, while the Seagulls’ Gerry Callahan Medal will be presented on the same night at its Seaview Events Centre. The WRFL senior presentation night is on this Thursday at Moonee Valley. ■ St Albans Cricket Club is holding a free junior cricket clinic for six to 16-year-olds on Wednesday, September 28, at Kings Park Reserve, 10am– noon. The Saints are teaming up with Melbourne Renegades. Registrations online via the Cricket Victoria website. There will be a free sausage sizzle afterwards. Kevin Hillier

Footscray ANA will usher in its 85th anniversary season with a brand new pavilion that will set up its future. ANA, last year’s VTCA west B1 champion, is scheduled to move into the new $1.4 million facility at Angliss Reserve before the end of this month and in time for the season’s opening round. It’s been a long time coming for ANA. “We were in a 1960s, non-purpose-built pavilion, which we had to share and that was incredibly unfairly proportioned,” ANA president John Wetzler told Star Weekly. “We had one-third of the pavilion and Kingsville Baptists had two-thirds, yet we were three times the size of their club. “Now, not only do we have a $1.4 million redevelopment nearing completion with change rooms for umpires, two sets of showers, four change rooms, disabled facilities, men’s and women’s toilets, a purpose-built commercial kitchen and large social area … but Kingsville Baptists have decided after moving to Skinner Reserve last year that they’ll stay there, so we’ll be the sole cricket club at Angliss Reserve. It’s huge.” Footscray ANA has fond memories of celebrating premiership glories in the old clubrooms, but the club is looking forward to

Veteran chases elusive prize at end of AFL-VFL journey Jed Adcock is jumping out of his skin to feature in a grand final for Footscray in the VFL. Adcock never had the chance to play on the biggest day of the AFL calendar during a long and distinguished career with the Brisbane Lions. His first season with the Lions was in 2004, which brought the last of the club’s four consecutive grand final appearances during its golden era. Adcock was raw at the time and did not feature in the grand final loss to Port Adelaide. His time to shine on that last Saturday in September never eventuated because the Lions have not been back on football’s grandest stage. After being delisted by Brisbane last season, Adcock was picked up by the Western Bulldogs in the rookie draft last summer to provide depth to their playing list. The 30-year-old played an important role for the AFL side with seven games when injury

struck the Dogs in mid-season. But with the senior side seemingly settled and Adcock announcing that 2016 will be his last in the AFL system, he now has plans to go out on a high with Footscray when it faces Casey Scorpions in the grand final on Sunday. “I always thought it was the right decision to keep playing,” he told Star Weekly. “I felt like I had plenty of footy in me, whatever level that is. It’s exciting to play finals at whatever level, and to get to a grand final is a good feeling.” Adcock will be a calming influence over his team. Having a long-time AFL captain in the ranks will be a huge asset for Footscray in grand final week. While the youngsters were doing a victory jig in the rooms after the preliminary final thrashing of Collingwood, Adcock was quietly taking it all in and pondering what he can do to best prepare for the big game. “We’re keeping it in a bit of perspective,

enjoying this win for now, but the time will come when we’ve got to recover well and refocus. We’ve got an eight-day break, which is nice. Our boys play AFL on the Saturday as well, so it will be nice to get them boys over the line and into a granny as well.” Adcock has been impressed with the set-up at the kennel. Both the AFL and VFL sides have a nice blend of youth and experience, he says, but, more importantly, they have the structure to allow the players to improve. “It just shows the depth we’ve got through the group at both levels and the development the club has been able to get into not only the young players, but every player,” Adcock said. “We’ve got a really good system that we all understand, trust and follow, but at the same time we’re able to go out, play footy and enjoy ourselves. It’s nice to see the rewards for that.” Lance Jenkinson

Dogs circle the cups

Seagulls cop a tough footy lesson

By Lance Jenkinson Footscray produced a jaw-dropping preliminary final performance to book its VFL grand final showdown against minor premiers Casey Scorpions at Etihad Stadium this Sunday. The Bulldogs totally dismantled a shell-shocked Collingwood by 119 points at North Port Oval on Saturday to move through to the season decider. A second flag in three seasons is now well within their reach. Bulldogs’ coach Ashley Hansen got everything he asked for in the runaway win. “We certainly executed what we wanted to execute really well,” Hansen told Star Weekly Weekly. “They played for one another, knew what we wanted to achieve and how we wanted to go about it … and they did it really to perfection. “They keep taking their games to another level and really exploring what they’re capable of. “What these guys can achieve is completely up to them.” Footscray took a 20-point lead into quarter-time then stretched it out to 10 goals late in the second quarter. But Collingwood breathed some life into its contest with the last three goals of the second term and first major of the third. It seemed, momentarily, there was a glimmer of hope for the Magpies, but Footscray clicked back into first gear, and motored away. By three-quarter time, the rampaging Bulldogs’ lead had blown out to an unassailable 61 points, and a scintillating 10-goal last quarter saw the margin extend beyond triple figures. As hefty as the win was for Footscray, Hansen said there was still a lesson to be learned before players head to a grand final. “I felt we dropped away a little bit [defensively] in the second quarter,” Hansen said. “The half-time message was a lot about [how] the behaviours we exhibit in the second half are the habits we want to have for next week. “When everyone is really engaged in it, we can be really hard to break through – and for large periods of today, we were really successful. “We knew Collingwood like to out-number at the ball, like to use their hands, and that invited opportunities to come forward and defend aggressively – our guys were up for that, stimulated by it, and created turnovers that allowed us to score and generate inside 50s.” Footscray was lethal in front of goal, and no one more so than Ben Long. The designated 23rd man had the best game of his rookie season, with six goals. “Our youth, as much as they can be unpredictable, they can be really exciting,” Hansen said. “Ben, today, I thought his forward pressure and ability to win the ball in a contested situation was outstanding.” Ruckmen Will Minson and Tom Campbell

were imposing throughout the game for Footscray. Koby Stevens, Mitch Honeychurch and Lukas Webb feasted at their feet at the stoppages, while Liam Nash set the tone with his defensive acts. It will be a huge week at the kennel, with Footscray facing a grand final and the Western

Bulldogs taking on GWS Giants in the AFL preliminary final at Spotless Stadium. “To be able to prepare for a grand final this week, when the AFL boys are going into a prelim, makes the club such an exciting place to be in,” Hansen said. “Our two squads can really embrace one another and ride the wave.”

The VFL premiership defence is over for Williamstown. And the all-west VFL grand final that footy fans in this neck of the woods had dreamed of for 24 hours is a non-starter. The Seagulls were beaten at their own game, receiving a lesson in hard, physical and disciplined football from the Casey Scorpions in a 42-point preliminary final loss at North Port Oval on Sunday. Williamstown was on the back foot from the outset. The Seagulls conceded the opening four goals of the game to go into quarter-time with a 29-point deficit. On a difficult day for scoring and with intermittent rain falling, it was always going to be tough for the Seagulls to mount a comeback. In true Seagulls fashion, they never went away and turned the game into an arm wrestle. But they could not erode the deficit on the scoreboard, which was always comfortably in the Scorpions’ favour. The Scorpions put a lot of work into limiting the Seagulls’ “big three” midfielders – Liston Trophy winner Michael Gibbons, captain Ben Jolley and Willie Wheeler. Gibbons had a target on his back and was often the recipient of a bit of extra oomph from the Scorpions tackles. Caleb Hislop was another of the Seagull midfielders to be hit with brute force on multiple occasions. That David Fahey and Ben Bese were two of the Seagulls’ best says plenty about the dominance of the Scorpions in key areas of the ground. Fahey and Bese never stopped trying and saved the scoreboard from being a blow out. The grand final loss brought to an end an up and down finals series for Williamstown. The Seagulls started their September campaign with a miserable 46-point loss to Collingwood. They backed that up with a dominant 46-point win over Sandringham and then fizzled out with the heavy loss to the Scorpions. Meanwhile, the Box Hill Hawks took out the AFL Victoria Development League premiership after a 105-point win over Casey Scorpions in the grand final at North Port Oval on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson
