All-round fun in the square Footscray’s Maddern Square will light up this Friday night with vivid projections, roving performers and the launch of a street art project by French artist Aline Brugel that’s truly one out of the box. Brugel says her Australian premiere paste-up project, Corps in Situ in Footscray, features life-size images of Footscray people in boxes, placed in surprising locations. “The project started with a walk around Footscray, trying to get to know the city better, working and playing with the colour blue,” the artist says. Fifteen sites have been selected and they will tie in with the colour-blue theme of Victoria University’s ‘Bluscray’ centenary celebrations. Friday night’s celebrations are being held as part of the ongoing West Projections Festival. Footscray Community Arts Centre chief executive Jade Lillie, a member of the executive of the Arts West alliance, said Arts West had been working on an alternative model to Big West. “It’s unclear as to whether we will be able to realise this possibility, but we are certainly interested in ensuring that resources are available for artists and communities in and across Melbourne’s west.” Save Big West members Merophie Carr and Hoang Nguyen cautiously welcomed the council’s commitment. Ms Carr said it showed goodwill on the
part of the council, while Mr Nguyen said moving to get an arts-based festival must happen sooner than later. “Actions speak louder than words,” he added. Among almost 20 events allocated more than $300,000 in total, the council included triennial funding of $60,000 a year for the East Meets West Lunar New Year Festival and $13,000 for the Quan Minh Tet Festival. Further festival funding includes $27,000 for the Yarraville Festival, $25,000 for Wominjeka, $19,000 for the Seddon Festival, and $17,000 for Carols in the Gardens.

A new arts-based festival could replace the scuppered Big West after Maribyrnong council set aside up to $85,000 to support a new event. A motion put to last week’s council meeting by councillor Grant Miles suggested the council provide the full $85,000 that had been due to go to Big West before its sudden demise, rather than the $45,000 initially proposed. The motion was carried unanimously. Cr Miles said he had “never seen a more bizarre episode” than the decision by the Big West Festival board to retire the organisation
and festival. “The attempted destruction of a healthy, vibrant festival just perplexes me,” he said. Cr Miles said investment by the council was essential if it was serious about its Festival City tag. Cr Nam Quach said Maribyrnong could not call itself a festival city unless it was prepared to “walk the walk” and “put our money where our mouth is”. Cr Sarah Carter said the local artistic community had “really made their voices heard and we have listened”. Chronicle turns over a new page By Goya Dmytryshchak The former Williamstown Chronicle building will get a modern makeover after a three-storey development was approved last week by Hobson Bay council. A special planning committee of council approved plans for a shop and two dwellings at 6-8 Parker Street, but included a condition that the old newspaper office’s facade be restored. The building at 8 Parker Street was constructed in 1890, and has local heritage significance as one of Victoria’s first newsrooms outside Melbourne town centre.
Williamstown historian Brian Haynes said, while he had concerns about the new development, he was pleased the late Victorian facade would be retained. “The date, 1854, on the facade relates to when John Bennett Stephens started a local printing business and soon after started Williamstown’s first newspaper, the Trade Circular Circular, which changed its name to the Williamstown Chronicle,” he said. “This site was the final site for the Williamstown Chronicle that ceased operation circa 1964.” There were 11 objections submitted to the
council about the redevelopment proposal, with residents expressing concerns about the height of the new building, the loss of heritage values, and car parking congestion. A special planning committee of council approved the permit on the condition that the rooftop terrace be deleted, or totally concealed. Also, the building’s facade must be restored under the supervision of a suitably qualified heritage architect. A council officer’s report said while there was no onsite parking for the commercial part of the development, this had always been the case with this site.

A “mountain” of food is making its way to people in need thanks to the generosity of families at a Footscray school. St John’s Primary School has been collecting food and resources for asylum seekers in the past month in the lead-up to a recent feast day. Principal Gemma Goodyear said the day celebrating Saint Mary MacKillop was moving and emotional. “We reflected on two of her popular quotes – ‘we are all but travellers here’ and ‘you don’t see a need without doing something about it’,” Ms Goodyear said. She said the school had collected a van load of food that had been delivered to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre in Footscray. “We can make a difference like Mary MacKillop did; we can follow the footsteps of Mary MacKillop,” Ms Goodyear said. The Melbourne Tomato Festival could be on its way to Yarraville after organisers pitched their case for the event to be held locally. Backers of the annual celebration of all things tomato, led by celebrated chef and restaurateur Guy Grossi, are seeking approval to relocate the event to Yarraville Gardens next March. The one-day festival could host up to 5500 people and feature entertainment, wine and food stands, cooking demonstrations and competitions. Melbourne-born Grossi has penned a number of cookbooks and owns several restaurants, including the iconic Grossi Florentino on Bourke Street. He has been recognised with the prestigious L’insegna Del Ristorante Italiano for promoting “La Cucina Italiana”. An officer’s report due to be considered at last night’s Maribyrnong council meeting suggested the festival would be a positive addition to the council’s Festival City and Melbourne Food and Wine Festival – Eat Drink Westside programs. “The festival is an opportunity to work closely with local restaurants, bars and provedores to encourage participation and to support investment in our local economy,” it stated. “The Tomato Festival offers a great opportunity to activate our city for both locals and visitors and promote our city to a new audience.” The festival, entering its third year, has been held in Eltham for the past two years. The event would require fencing off the southern half of Yarraville Gardens for three days.

Re-design tollway: petitioners By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition signed by 877 people against trucks from the Western Distributor being routed onto residential Spotswood streets was last week tabled in State Parliament. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan presented the petition from his constituents which called on his own government to consider a different design for the $5.5 billion tollway. “This reference design has an on-ramp for trucks onto the West Gate Freeway that will bring trucks along Douglas Parade and Simcock Avenue in Spotswood, then through
industrial land where it will become an elevated road, running past Emma McLean kindergarten and the Donald McLean Reserve,” the petition states. “The residents of Spotswood and surrounding suburbs feel this option poses health risks from diesel exhaust fumes for our community and particularly the children that frequent these facilities. “This option greatly impacts local traffic which uses Simcock Avenue on a daily basis to enter and exit the suburb of Spotswood.” The petitioners are calling for an alternative route which would have both on and off ramps on the northern side of the West Gate Freeway.

Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland last week used Parliament to question Roads Minister Luke Donnellan about the Western Distributor design. She said the southern truck off-ramp would be 1.3 metres higher than the West Gate Freeway and 8.85 metres above the Williamstown Road exit ramp, creating “a
visual eyesore” and bringing more diesel truck pollution to the sports oval. “My question for the minister is, how far towards the oval will this elevated truck ramp encroach, and what noise, amenity and pollution protections will be provided to protect children playing on the sports fields?” Ms Hartland also asked if 24-hour truck curfews would be applied to Hobsons Bay’s roads after the distributor is built, to ensure container trucks don’t evade tolls by using residential streets including Blackshaws and Hudsons roads, High Street, Mason Street, The Avenue and parts of Kororoit Creek Road.
Cannonball flies again Newport’s Chris “Cannonball” Knoop this week left Australia to compete in the Cannonball Run. America’s coast-to-coast antique-motorcycle race attracts many wanting an adventure in the style of Hells Angels founder Sonny Barger on Donald Trump’s budget. Entrants have included a wealthy Texan who was followed by an entourage hauling a luxury motor home complete with mobile bar. This year, there’s Knoop, an unemployed metallurgist, who will be hauling little more than his ass. Come September 10, Knoop will be the only Australian in the gruelling 15-day endurance race which covers 5317 kilometres from Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Carlsbad, California. “The entry requirement for this year’s race is that your motorcycle must be built before 1916,
so every motorcycle entered is over 100 years old,” he said. “It’s being promoted as the race of the century. There’s about 95 entries from nine countries. I’m still the only Australian entry.” It will be his second time competing and he will be riding a 1914 1000cc V-twin Jap. In 2012, he finished 58th out of 75. Knoop says his V-twin Jap is lighter than his previous bike. “It’s got no pedals,” he says. “It’s basically just a ‘bump and jump’. “I like the ability to take something that’s fairly broken and abstract and turn it into a thing of beauty that is reliable enough to compete in the hardest international event in the world for reliability and endurance.” Goya Dmytryshchak Chris Knoop is the only Aussie in the Cannonball Run. Council rejects childcare bid

Old Style is smokin’ A Williamstown butcher has brought home the bacon. Paul White of Old Style Butcher in Williamstown and Yarraville has been awarded for curing the best bacon in the Australian Meat Council Industry Awards. Mr White said the bacon was made at his Ferguson Street store, which is the longest standing butcher shop in Williamstown.
“We get a full carcass in, we break the pigs down, we bone the middle, cure it for bacon and we smoke it inhouse,” Mr White said. “Basically, we use our traditional recipes, so nothing over the top, fancy or anything like that … but we smoke it just right. “When I say nothing over the top, fancy, we’re not trying to reinvent it, we’re just trying
to do it properly,” Mr White said. “I guess that’s our philosophy throughout the business; we try to do everything properly. “We don’t take short cuts and we don’t try to speed processes up that can’t be sped up. “We obviously take a lot of pride in what we do and it’s just a good honest product – the way it’s supposed to be.”
Plans for a Newport childcare centre have been rejected by Hobsons Bay council. Ellis Group Architects had applied to build a two-storey centre at 32-34 Maddox Road, 300 metres from Newport Gardens Early Years Centre. Ten objections were submitted to the council, with objectors saying the building was out of character in a residential area and there was no need for another centre. Carparking and traffic issues were also raised, with objectors saying the planned basement parking for 27 cars was insufficient. Some said they did not want noise from 122 children crying and playing from 6.30am to 7pm. A special planning committee of council refused to grant a permit, saying the proposed centre was inconsistent with a general residential zone that encouraged non-residential land uses and development in residential areas provided they had neighbourhood focus. The committee said the centre would unreasonably impact residential amenity and was an over-development of the site. It said the basement carparking was poorly designed and there would be a detrimental impact on Maddox Road with people parking on the street to set down and pick up children at the centre. Ellis Group Architects declined to comment except to confirm they would appeal the decision in the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. Goya Dmytryshchak

The concept of a buddy bench has taken off so well that Altona Primary School now has two. Radio presenter Meshel Laurie, whose twins attend the school, spearheaded an on-air campaign to have the benches installed in schools across Melbourne. The buddy bench is a brightly-coloured seat where children can go when they are feeling lonely, bullied, or just to make friends. If children see someone on the buddy bench, they are urged to reach out to them. The idea is believed to have started in Germany, and has spread to schools around the world. Ms Laurie helped organise the school’s first buddy bench and inspired Altona IGA to donate a second.
Store manager Joe Sidari said the supermarket was moved to act after hearing the school needed another buddy bench. “After we heard Meshel Laurie talking about how her kids go to Altona Primary School and that the school is trying to encourage inclusion and friendship, we wanted to do something to help,” he said. “After learning that the school already had one of these benches but needed another to cater for more kids at the school, we jumped at the chance to be able to provide this for them. “We’re extremely delighted that we’ve been able to support and make a difference to the local kids in our area.”

The inner-west sport of trugo is closer to returning to the former Footscray Trugo Club site after consultation showed strong community backing for the plan. Q fever strikes meat workers Health officials are investigating an outbreak of a rare and potentially serious disease infecting meat workers in Melbourne’s western suburbs. People working in and around Vic Wide Meat Brokers and W J Drever at 9 Holcourt Road, Laverton North, are being tested for Q fever after six employees of the two meat businesses fell ill with the flu-like disease. Other staff working at the site and at similar businesses nearby are also being contacted to ensure they are vaccinated. Q fever usually produces flu-like symptoms, but can cause pneumonia and liver inflammation. While only half of those infected with Q fever even show symptoms, it is fatal for between one and two per cent of its victims. The Victorian department of health is now writing to contractors who may have visited the site since late last year, to provide them with advice about signs and symptoms. Barry Hall, chief executive of WJ Drever, an offal supplier adjoining Vic Wide Meat Brokers, said his business appears to be the source of the infections. He said workers who fell ill with it probably inhaled steam, which had the bacteria in it, coming from his plant. Q fever is not spread person to person. Mr Hall said he has rectified the problem, and that all meats are being cooked at high temperatures to eliminate bacteria.

Victorian chief health officer Charles Guest said Q fever is the name given to human infections caused by the bacterium, Coxiella burnetti. “It is transmitted by contact with cattle, sheep and goats and other animals, and is a risk for people who work with these animals or their products, such as abattoir workers and farmers,” Professor Guest said. “The signs and symptoms of Q fever are fever, usually with severe headache, weakness, muscle aches and sweats lasting two or three weeks – similar to severe influenza.” “A small percentage of people with Q fever infection report ongoing fatigue and weakness, which may persist for months. In some cases the illness is asymptomatic, with past exposure only becoming evident on skin and blood testing,” he said.

Empire parents strike back
‘Matchbox city’ fears By Goya Dmytryshchak A landmark Altona house will be demolished to make way for six new dwellings, with some residents dubbing the suburb “matchbox city”. The house at 146-148 Maidstone Street (pictured) sold last year for $1.15 million, and the new owner applied to the Supreme Court to modify a 1953 covenant preventing more than one house on each lot. The covenant was modified late last year and a planning permit for the new dwellings was subsequently granted by Hobsons Bay council.
Fencing went up last week at the front of the original house in preparation for its demolition. Graham Griffiths jnr said his father built this house from a design in an American Cape Cod book. “It was built in 1956 from Glen Iris ‘Coronation’ clinker bricks – Coronation as they were stamped with a crown for Queen Elizabeth’s wedding,” he said. Mr Griffiths lived in the house until 1973, when it sold for $18,000. Locals have taken to social media to express their sadness at losing part of the area’s heritage. Some said they had always admired the house
while growing up and fantasized about living there. Many lamented the loss of the traditional Aussie home, with townhouse subdivisions becoming commonplace across Altona. “It will be called matchbox city soon with all the townhouses,” said one. The original house has four bedrooms and one bathroom, and is built on a 1215 square metre block, which also has an oversized inground swimming pool. This footprint will be replaced by six new dwellings – four double-storey and two single-storey abodes.
Parents at a Footscray childcare centre say claims of nearby drug dealing and inappropriate music fail to justify closing the centre’s doors. Star Weekly last month reported Maribyrnong councillors had voted in a confidential meeting to close the Empire Early Learning Centre in December. Parent Adrienne Ward, who has collected more than 320 signatures via an online petition calling for a halt to the closure, used last week’s council meeting to invite councillors to explain their decision. Councillor Sarah Carter said the council was bound by confidentiality but she was happy to “front up” to a meeting with parents. Councillor Catherine Cumming said the decision was reinforced by a recent visit in which she was told by the Early Childhood Management Services centre manager that children were exposed to “inappropriate music”, drug deals and people having domestic disputes in adjoining flats. “When these things occur, she picks up the children and brings them inside and they get to listen to The Wiggles,” she said. Ms Warde said there were still too many holes in the council’s explanation. “We are concerned about some of the evidence they produced, given it is based on a visit to the centre after they had made the decision,” she said. The Williamstown Hospital Opportunity Shop supplied props for Australian film The Dressmaker Dressmaker. It also raised $144,000 for the local hospital last year. The op shop is urging people to come in and help celebrate its 60th anniversary during National Op Shop Week, which runs until Saturday. Volunteer co-ordinator Nicky Cooper praised the dedicated team of 47 volunteers. “They are well known within the Williamstown community for their warm smiles, friendly banter and willingness to
take the time to find the items a customer is searching for,” she said. “We see our volunteers as direct links in the community to the Williamstown Hospital. “They are great ambassadors for their hospital and are enthusiastic proponents of the Heart of Williamstown appeal, a multi-million dollar upgrade of the Williamstown Hospital, which all funds currently being raised at the shop are directed towards.” The appeal is aimed at raising $2 million for upgraded patient and visitor facilities. A seven-storey apartment complex could be built opposite West Footscray railway station under plans lodged with Maribyrnong council. The council was last night due to vote on the proposal for an 86-unit development above retail space on the corner of Cross and Hocking streets and currently occupied by Potter’s House Christian Church. The project plan, by property consultants Spiire Australia, seeks permission for 49 car spaces less than required due to its proximity to the railway station. The planned carparking area comprises 69 vehicle spaces, 72 bicycle spaces and three motorbike spaces. A council report noted the site was located within a “substantial change area” that encourages “a new, higher-density urban character”. Two objections were lodged, noting the lack of public realm works and inconsistencies with higher-density residential development guidelines, preferred height limits and building scale. But the report found the site “ideal for accommodating additional housing growth with minimal impacts”. The project was recommended for support subject to conditions including a reduction in the number of dwellings.

“The design is considered to respond effectively to its context, in policy and physical terms,” the report stated. The proposal comes as VicTrack continues planning for intensive redevelopment on the northern side of West Footscray station. A 5000-square-metre site north of the rail corridor was identified in 2014 for redevelopment under a plan to help pay for station upgrades. A spokeswoman said VicTrack expected to be able to move forward with the plans in coming months. “Our investigations involve working closely with the Melbourne Metro Rail Authority to co-ordinate our proposal with their planned works at the station,” she said.

MY PLACE When he isn’t running away looking for something overseas, acclaimed sculptor and printmaker Geoffrey Ricardo calls Brooklyn home. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Brooklyn? I moved to a studio with friends in 1999 and then started buying a house in 2001, where I have my studio nowadays. I thought, this is the only place I could afford at the time … and just found a place that seemed right. I had the space in the backyard that I could build a nice big studio, which I’ve got now. It’s not too far from the city so I don’t feel like I’m stuck in the midst of suburbia; I feel like I’m on the edge of it. What do you like about Brooklyn? Proximity to the city. It feels a bit overlooked. What would you change?

A nice cafe away from the traffic, somewhere I could walk to without having to deal with traffic. A little less traffic noise from the freeway. What’s your favourite cafe and/or eatery in the local area?
What are you passionate about and why? Not being stupid. It seems like a good idea.
A lot of your work, from large-scale sculptures to small prints, feature animals. What’s the reason for this? It’s a way of metaphorically talking about people. You make an animal as a representation of someone, like we’ve always done with
putting masks on, or a coat of arms, things like that, how we just create identities with it, or projected identities. And people are kind of crazy silly things …half the time they’re at the mercy of their own instincts, and that’s all kind of very animalistic. I suppose some of it is a reference to conservation issues.
What would people be surprised to know about you? Have a guess … that I am never really sure about what I am trying to do? Actually, they probably wouldn’t be [surprised to know this].

What do you call a cross between a pizza and a cookie? A pizookie, of course. You might also know it as a skillet cookie cake. Whatever you like to call it, this Coles recipe is pretty hard to resist and ridiculously easy to make. How fantastic would this be for a kids’ camp-out … Just flatten out a 450g packet of chocolate chip cookie dough into a disc, to fit into a lightly greased 15cm (base measurement) ovenproof frying pan. Sprinkle with some mini pretzels, broken up mini Oreo cookies and dark chocolate chunks. Bake for 20 minutes in a 180 degree Celsius oven. Serve cut into wedges with ice cream and chocolate topping.

The other day I wandered into the kitchen at work only to hear sighs and groans from a colleague, who I can only assume was planning to whip up some scrambled eggs in the office microwave. Each time he tried to break an egg into a bowl, half the shell ended up going in with it. He looked at me rather suspiciously when I suggested he break the eggs onto a flat surface instead of on the side of the bowl. This way, you’re much less likely to end up with stray bits of shell. First problem solved … second problem – how to quickly and easily get the bits of shell out of the bowl? This is where former MasterChef contestant Ben Milbourne c o m e s in. I love how Ben – a former chemistry teacher – offers a scientific explanation for his cooking techniques. As I watched his TV show a few days ago, he explained how “eggshell attracts eggshell”. In other words, if you get bits of eggshell in the bowl, use another piece of eggshell to scoop them out. The pieces of shell seem to leap together like long lost lovers. I tried it myself, and it works.

Kath Knott was the best of the goalers, with 39 goals from 45 attempts. Jane Cook and Julia Woolley scored 13 goals each. Captain Maggie Lind also spent time in the attacking circle. “Maggie used to play goals at national under age level, so nothing new for her,” Lind said.
“Julia had a knock to the head, and it was just as a precaution. “Bringing Kath back on would have been stupid on a cold night.” The Falcons entry into the grand final this year is from a very different position to its last couple – they won’t be going into the game as favourites this year. Lind said it will be the side that handles the pressure best that takes home the title. “I think we are the underdog,” she said. “It will give us a chance to focus on ourselves and do our homework. “Credit to the girls to get their heads back on track after the semi-final loss,” Lind said. The Falcons’ division 1 side is also in the grand final, while the under-19 side fell just short, losing in its preliminary final.
Crusaders march on By Lance Jenkinson When Western Crusaders start consistently winning the close games in the Grid Iron Victoria senior men’s, the rest of the competition better look out. The Crusaders’ only two losses of the season have been by a combined total of 10 points, while their six wins have seen an average winning margin of 18.5 points. Crusaders’ head coach Craig Wilson is thrilled with the 6-2 start and, with a bit more polish, can see his team at the top the league. “We’re rapt with the start,” he told Star Weekly. “We’ve lost the games that were pretty tight for us. Fix a couple of mistakes and the next time round, hopefully they’re ours for the taking.” The Crusaders are one of the hottest teams in the competition. In Tyson Garnham’s 100th game on Sunday, they notched a fourth consecutive victory, edging Geelong Buccaneers 15-13 on home turf at Henry Turner Reserve. During its winning streak, the Crusaders have scored a massive 125 points, while conceding just 39. Now well and truly in the playoff mix in third spot, the Crusaders have started to believe they are among the contenders for the Vic Bowl XXXII on October 16. “As long as we keep on improving every week, and we do it faster than the other teams, I think we’re a red hot shot,” Wilson said. “Every time we’ve had a win or a loss, we get in and review the film, and check out how we’ve gone and whether we’ve played our assignments, and what our techniques have been like.” If the Crusaders are to win their first Vic Bowl since 2007, they need to conquer Monash Warriors, the powerhouse of the past decade. The Crusaders have beaten last year’s champs Croydon Rangers twice this season, but the scalp of the Warriors – winners eight times in the past 11 seasons – has eluded them. “They’re the team I don’t think we’ve beaten for a number of years,” Wilson said. “They’re the team we’d be keen to measure ourselves against.” The Crusaders will meet the Warriors for a second time on September 4. With the arrival of US import wide receiver cum defensive back DJ Battistella, and the return of defensive MVP Jnala Saluni after an ankle injury, the Crusaders will be in much better position to give the Warriors a good run. Grid Iron Victoria will have a bye this weekend to give fans the chance to go to the NCAA college football game between the California Golden Bears and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in Sydney.

biggest growth area is the women’s game, with the national league starting next year. The two Bulldog marquee players, Katie Brennan and Ellie Blackburn, spoke at the Werribee brunch last Sunday, before playing for their VFL team on Avalon Airport Oval. They are great ambassadors for the women’s game and their new club. They enjoyed similar pathways to the elite level, both playing against boys until moving into the youth girls and now the VFL. The next step will see them become trailblazers and important role models for the emerging women’s competition.

VFL and AFL home-and-away seasons come to an end this week. In the VFL, Williamstown will finish in the top three in its bid to defend its senior premiership, while its development side could still make the finals depending on the Coburg v Port Melbourne game this Saturday. The Bulldogs will play VFL finals, but Werribee will miss out. The Tigers will finish with a bang, though, as their final match of 2016 will be the last before the $11 million redevelopment begins. Their season has been dogged by injuries, with more than 50 players turning out for the seniors and 85 in the development squad.

were no big surprises in the WRFL finals in week one with Hoppers Crossing narrowly defeating arch rival Werribee Districts and, in second division, Caroline Springs winning its first ever final, as did Tarneit in division 3. Matt Sutton, returning to the field after a shocking facial injury, kicked seven goals for the Lakers, who will face North Footscray in the preliminary final this Saturday at Dempster Park. In division 3, Parkside will trek to Wootten Road Reserve to face Tarneit. I can see howls of protest coming if Tarneit wins and gets to host the grand final on Saturday, September 3.

City West Falcons will renew acquaintances with Melbourne University Lightning in the Victorian Netball League championship division grand final. The Falcons set up the semi-final rematch after a comprehensive win over DC North East Blaze on Wednesday night. After an even first quarter, the Falcons blew the game open in the second and third quarters, before giving players on the bench a final quarter run. The Falcons won 66-46, a win that sets up a grand final match against the Lightning, with one goal separating the two teams after their most recent games. War drums pound as Power prepares to make history If you hear drums beating across the west over the next 10 days, there’s a fair chance it will be a happy Newport Power fan warming up to play their part at the WRFL division 3 grand final. The Power did what many thought impossible at the weekend, winning through to the season decider in their first year as a senior club in the league. A passionate supporter base has come along for a thrill ride, adding atmosphere at local grounds with their playing of the drums. Even the most staunch Power drum beaters must have gone into the season with a touch of pessimism. It’s simply not the norm for a club to take a competition by storm in their first season. “We just wanted to win a few games at the start of the year, but now we’ve got into a grand final,” Power assistant coach John Rayner said. “If we win it, it’s a bonus. We’ll just embrace the fortnight, enjoy it and see what happens.” Newport’s wildest dreams were realised in a dramatic ending. The Power were holding on for dear life when Parkside penetrated their
inside 50. In a pressure moment, defender Issa Taleb took a mark that saved his side, clinching the narrowest of wins. “It was a clutch moment,” Rayner said. “He went back with the flight of the ball and it stuck. It was a game-saving mark; if it had got over the back, they would’ve run into an open goal and the result would have been different.” All the more impressive was Newport’s ability to win without player-coach Mark Williams on the field. Williams, a Hawthorn premiership player and the Power’s leading goalkicker with 41 goals this season, was nursing an undisclosed injury but will be available to play in the grand final. “If it was cut-throat game I believe he would’ve played today,” Rayner said. “That’s the advantage of getting the double chance: we can give him another seven days, but now he’s got the best part of 14 to freshen up.” Newport was not lacking in on-field leadership. Ziad Kadour and Munir El Houli provided that in spades.
Kadour is possibly the most influential player on the Power list. “He’s a calming influence over the group,” Rayner said. El Houli was one of the Power’s big name recruits. His career has been highlighted by his goalkicking ability, but he has sacrificed his own game for the team. “He’s come across as a goalkicker, but we put him everywhere on the ground,” Rayner said. “He’s a class act.” Parkside has a tough road to get on the biggest stage to face Newport again. The Magpies not only face the improving Tarneit but have to do so on their home ground at Wootten Road Reserve on Sunday. Should the Magpies fail in their preliminary final against the Titans, there will surely be a ‘please explain’ from the club delivered to the WRFL over why the third-ranked Tarneit has been given home ground advantage. Yarraville-Seddon had its back to the wall in the last quarter of Saturday’s stirring six-point win over North Footscray in the WRFL division 2 second semi-final at Dempster Park. The Eagles were battling with three men down and only one rotation, a daunting prospect when you have a Devils side staring you down with no intentions of going away quietly. In the face of adversity, the Eagles refused to yield, holding on for a famous victory and booking the first spot in this year’s grand final. Eagles coach Dean Callaway was thrilled with the effort. “We had people running off their feet due to the limitation in rotations,” he said. “I had 22 contributors that really wanted to play for each other.” Yarraville-Seddon had been impeccable until three-quarter time, the Eagles holding the Devils to just three goals in the first three quarters to lead by 33 points. Gareth Newton produced another captain’s game, leading the Eagles by example. Kevin Johnson and Jacob Connors were outstanding in defence, while Jack Collins thrived in a run-with role. While Yarraville-Seddon goes straight through to the grand final, North Footscray will meet Caroline Springs in the preliminary final at Dempster Park on Saturday. Caroline Springs had a 109-point win over Glen Orden in the first semi-final. In division 1, Altona cruised to a 37-point win over Spotswood in a low-scoring elimination final at Burbank Oval in Sunday. Mitch Turnbull continued his strong form in front of goal with four majors. Altona set up a cut-throat semi-final back at Burbank Oval against Werribee Districts on Sunday. Werribee Districts enters on the back of an eight-point defeat at the hands of Hoppers Crossing in the qualifying final.
The training wheels are off for two bottom-age stars of the Western Jets. Cameron Rayner and Lachlan Fogarty have long been heralded as players to watch for 2017, but their progress has accelerated in the TAC Cup in recent weeks as they show they’re here and now for the Jets. “It’s great to see them be able to produce those kinds of performances,” Jets’ coach Torin Baker said, noting the pair’s influence in Saturday’s heart-stopping seven-point loss to Calder Cannons at Highgate Recreation Reserve. Rayner has shown that x-factor for the Jets in the past fortnight. The 16-year-old thrived with every challenge thrown his way, in the midfield and up forward. “He’s in very good form and it’s good for him to have a couple of good games at the end of the year because he doesn’t get to play here too often,” Baker said. There is nothing like a swag of goals to put your name up in lights. Rayner proved the previous week’s seven-goal show against Bendigo Pioneers was no fluke, putting on five more against the Cannons … 12 goals in two games and Rayner is suddenly the Jets’ leading goalkicker, but his value is not just in his finishing. The goals have been a byproduct of his ball winning ability in traffic, consistent marking and his defensive efforts. Fogarty has also used the past two outings to give fans a glimpse into his future. The 17-year-old been a tireless worker in both directions in the midfield. “His last two games have been outstanding,” Baker said. “His tackle pressure and work in close was fantastic today, as it was last week.” Oscar Junker and Brodie Romensky were the other Jet’s standouts. Even with such noteworthy performers, the Jets still came up short against rivals Calder. This was the Jets last game of the season, but they will face Northern Knights in an exhibition match at Ikon Park on Saturday. Cards fall Magic’s way By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic has been crowned kings of the FFV men’s state league 1 north-west – 24 hours later than expected. The wasteful Magic played out a frustrating 1-1 draw with Keilor Park at home on Saturday that was not enough for the engravers to put their name on the trophy. A helping hand came on Sunday from lowly Cairnlea in the form of a 0-0 draw with second-placed Preston Lions, the only side that could catch the Magic. Only three points for the Lions would have kept the premiership race alive, with any other result rendering the Magic’s 10-point lead at the top of the ladder unassailable. Magic coach Vlado Tortevski declared the “good days” had returned to the grand old club after securing the title. “We did it!” he said with a hint of relief. “We thought Saturday night would be a night of celebration, but we had to wait 24 hours. “With three games to go, mathematically we are champions, so I congratulate every single person at the club – the players and everyone else who was putting their hard work into the club, especially the president, Igor Georgievski. “Now we can breathe a little easier and prepare ourselves for the play-off game at the end of the season at Bob Jane Stadium against the winner of the south-east group.” Altona will not party too hard in the coming weeks. The Magic has the chance to eclipse the 50-point mark and will be eager to go through the season having lost just one game. The play-off final against the winner of the south-east conference will determine the overall state league 1 champion. That game could be played at the pristine Lakeside Stadium as a curtain-raiser to the NPL grand final. “We’re going to concentrate on that last game now that we’ve achieved what we wanted in the league,” Tortevski said. “We can try and bring as much points as we can to break a club points record, but more importantly, I just want to win that play-off game.” Altona will wrap its stars in cotton wool the next three weeks in readiness for the state league 1 final. Until then, the Magic will promote youngsters and rest any first team regular not 100 per cent fit. “We will be getting a couple of players in who haven’t had much of an opportunity,” Tortevski said. “We have some injuries, so I have to give the medical staff the opportunity to fix all this in the next couple of weeks. “Now is an opportunity for some of the young boys … it doesn’t matter who is going to step up, everyone should be capable of doing the same job. “They practise all the time, they’re pushing and want to play in the highest level, so now they can prove why they’re there in the squad.”

Tortevski said Georgievski took over the Magic in troubled times and was working towards making the club a powerhouse once more. “He is a true leader to the whole club,” Tortevski said. “He came into the club at the worst time, when the club was going down. A club like
Altona Magic, with this history, to go down to play in the first division really is not something we deserved because we know we can do much better. “He came in, stepped up and said to the people, ‘From now on, we’re trying to get the club to the previous position’. So far what he’s done has been outstanding.”

Williamstown fires up but can’t maintain the pace

On the day it farewelled US college-bound sisters Audrey and Ursula Fithall, Williamstown gave all-conquering rivals Newport a real scare. The surprise half-time score in Sunday’s final round of Lacrosse Victoria women’s state league at Fearon Reserve gave Williamstown a 5-3 lead. But Porters steadied after the break to pile on 10 of the last 11 goals, winning 13-6. “It was fantastic to get to half-time in a commanding position,” Williamstown president Sarah Nobbs told Star Weekly. “We’ve really worked hard on our starts.” Unfortunately, Williamstown could not send the Fithall sisters out in style. It was their last game before they move to New York’s Niagara University. “It’s been a while since we’ve had players from our club go over to college,” Nobbs said.
“They’ll learn a wealth of experience, not only in lacrosse, but in life as well.” There is a significant gulf in class between Williamstown and Newport. Newport was last year’s champion side, and claimed this season’s minor premiership while Williamstown only registered three wins for the season – all against bottom side Caulfield. “It was the tale of two halves,” Nobbs said. “With the quality of players they have around goal, it just put that pressure on our defence the whole time.” With the women’s top-tier a four-team competition, Williamstown has qualified for finals. The Towners meet Caulfield for a semi-final at home at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday. Williamstown was chosen by the league to
host the semi-finals and grand final this season. “It’s a good opportunity for not only the people of Victoria, but the people of the west, to get out and support their local clubs,” Nobbs said. “We’re thrilled to be able to host it.” In the other game, Footscray found Caulfield a tough nut to crack, but secured a 10-8 win. The Scray will meet Newport to determine the first side through to the grand final. In the men’s state league, Footscray took the minor premiership with a 17-11 win over Moreland. This puts Footscray in battle with Surrey Park for a grand final place, while Williamstown has a semi-final against Camberwell. Both games will be played at Altona’s PJ Lynch Reserve on Saturday.
