‘Code’ fails the test By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay councillors have been spared the sack despite the Local Government Inspectorate indicating they were due to be disqualified within a fortnight. Confusion reigned after widespread media reports on Monday claimed councillors would be disqualified for not correctly signing a new code of conduct. It was reported that more than 100 Victorian councillors would be disqualified from September 1 with administrators appointed for seven weeks to replace 13 councils, including Hobsons Bay. However, the state government has since intervened and the council’s chief executive, Chris Eddy, said the councillors would not be sacked.

Mr Eddy said there was a minor administrative error in the wording when Hobsons Bay councillors signed a new code at a special meeting on June 7. “The Local Government Inspectorate advised me [Monday] afternoon that there was an error in the wording of the document signed by councillors, in that it was an ‘endorsement’ of the code, not a ‘declaration to abide by’ the code,” he said. “Councillors have not been disqualified, and I was advised by the Local Government Inspectorate that a remedy for the issue will be forthcoming this week.” Mr Eddy said Monday night’s media reports were contrary to the advice he had received from the state government. “Disappointingly, it has created confusion and anger unnecessarily across our community.” Premier Daniel Andrews used a press conference on Tuesday to sheet home the blame to councils. “Councils have written to us and said, ‘look we have stuffed this up, can you change the law, can you help us out here’ … and in the interest of ratepayers that’s exactly what the government will do.” Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said Mr Andrews’ comments were disappointing, “essentially he’s still blaming councils and suggesting that we cannot govern ourselves”. The council will be required to review its code of conduct again within four weeks of the October 22 election.
Thousands turned out to welcome the world’s largest wooden tall ship, built for sailors of all abilities, into Williamstown on Sunday. Tenacious was built in 2000 by charity Jubilee Sailing Trust and about half her crew of 40 have a disability. The ship had sailed from the UK via Sydney. The public can board Tenacious, behind Seaworks, on open days from today (Wednesday) until early next year. Seaworks chairman Trevor Huggard says every part of the ship is accessible to people of all abilities. “The idea is that they’re not passengers, they’re participants. ‘Truck street’ homes unwanted By Benjamin Millar Yarraville residents facing an increase in dangerous truck traffic are calling on the state government or toll road operator Transurban to buy their homes. Hyde Street residents in the path of a new route for petrol tankers and other trucks that won’t be allowed to use the new Western Distributor tunnel say the $5.5 billion project will have a dramatic affect on their quality of life. Resident Emma Honey said nine of the 11
home owners on the section of Hyde Street that will be impacted have asked to have their home acquired, in keeping with an acquisition overlay that already exists over their properties. “We had written a letter to Premier Daniel Andrews and they took a very long time to get back to us,” Ms Honey said. “They said the plans haven’t been finalised and they will not be buying us out.” She said residents were bracing for aroundthe-clock truck traffic once the Hyde Street ramps are built. She and her neighbours have attempted to
sell their homes in recent years, but potential buyers have been deterred by the volume of traffic that will be generated by the ramps. “It’s going to make a massive difference to the quality of our lives,” Ms Honey said. “We’re not against this project; we just want to get out of here.” Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the state government or Transurban should buy the residents out and end their anxiety. “The government has taken the positive step of offering voluntary acquisitions for the elevated rail project in the south-eastern
Crowd demands end to rat-running More than 100 residents shut down a busy Yarraville intersection last week to protest the state government’s refusal to commit to blanket truck bans on local roads once the Western Distributor tollway is built. The protesters, gathered at the corner of Francis Street and Williamstown Road, called for permanent truck bans and “world’s best practice filtration” on the tunnel beneath Yarraville. Protesters carried a giant ‘Port Trucks Out’ banner and chanted for truck bans while a band played and children chalked anti-truck messages on the road. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG) secretary Martin Wurt said the area already had a massive problem with trucks avoiding a toll of $5.50 on the Bolte Bridge and using local streets. “So if the toll’s going to be $13 on this new tunnel, we’re going to continue to have this massive issue.” Oncology pharmacist and clean air advocate Clare Walter said the bans were essential for providing cleaner air for residents, particularly children. Maribyrnong councillor Grant Miles said the $5.5 billion Western Distributor project would be a waste of money if trucks weren’t forced to use it. He told the crowd Buckley Street in Footscray and Seddon would bear the brunt of rat-running if bans were introduced only on certain routes. But Victorian Transport Association chief executive Peter Anderson said the industry did not support permanently banning trucks from inner west roads. “Bans and curfews are not solutions. They send entirely the wrong message about how our roads should be used and undermine the sharing-the-road culture that all road users need to adopt,” he said. Speaking ahead of the protest, State Roads Minister Luke Donnellan defended the lack of commitment to a complete ban. “I don’t think protesting there is actually

State Roads Minister Luke Donnellan visited OneSteel at Laverton North on Wednesday to announce there would be 89 per cent local content on the $5.5 billion Western Distributor Project. He said this would include the design and construction of the tunnel, road work and ramps. At least 10 per cent of hours worked on the project will be provided by Victorian apprentices, trainees and cadet engineers, Mr Donnellan said. “Local” content meant Australia-wide, but Victoria was well placed to provide steel. “CityLink-Tullamarine widening, for argument’s sake, has steel from OneSteel,” Mr Donnellan added. The Australian Workers Union said it was heartened by the mandate to maximise the use of local steel. State secretary Ben Davis said “battling” manufacturers needed all the help they could get. “This will create, obviously, some thousands of jobs in the design and construction of the project, but it will also create many many jobs, some hundreds if not thousands, amongst suppliers, including potentially here [OneSteel].” OneSteel’s Geoff Feurtado said this was exactly what the steel industry needed. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our steel businesses in Victoria and across Australia,” he said. “It’s going to allow us to invest confidently in the business and look at job growth opportunities for the steel group going forward.” Mr Donnellan said the Western Distributor would create 5600 jobs during construction and take 6000 trucks off local streets.

‘No place for needles’ By Benjamin Millar A Braybrook father has questioned whether a community hub is the best place for a needle program after repeatedly discovering used needles and syringes in a neighbouring children’s playground. Jason Demopoulos said that having cohealth run a needle syringe program (NSP) at the Braybrook Community Hub was a recipe for trouble, as it promoted drug use in the vicinity and exposed children to danger from inappropriately disposed syringes. However, cohealth chief executive Lyn Morgain has defended the program, saying it actually helps reduce the number of improperly discarded syringes. Mr Demopoulos said he had witnessed people injecting drugs in the carpark and had to look for needles and syringes any time his child wanted to play in the vicinity. “The council has someone doing a roving patrol and cohealth does, too, but there are still often used needles around.” Mr Demopoulos said he understood the need for the program in Braybrook but questioned whether the location was the right one. “I don’t see the need for it to be attached to a community centre where you have children and families coming and going all day.” Ms Morgain argued that the program helped protect community safety while minimising health risks for drug users. “[The programs] are established in response to high levels of drug use and inappropriately discarded syringes.” Prior to the program being staffed three years ago, Braybrook was the state’s most heavily used non-staffed service, and injecting equipment was available from a cupboard in the community hub’s foyer.

Ms Morgain said Maribyrnong council and cohealth had “carefully considered” whether to retain the program at its current site following the hub redevelopment. In addition to Maribyrnong council’s morning sweeps, cohealth staff had carried out clean-up sweeps in and around the playground area every weekday. Ms Morgain said the number of discarded syringes found in the sweeps had dropped by 15 per cent in the first six months of this year
and represented fewer than one in 200 of the number dispensed from the service. Funding fears for art festival Any plans for a new arts-based festival to replace the retired Big West Festival would be undermined if funding earmarked for Big West is carved up among other festivals, artists say. Maribyrnong council was last night due to consider a motion to redistribute $40,000 of the $85,000 that was earmarked for the Big West for 2016-17 and retain $45,000 to “address the artist-based festival gap”. The Big West Festival board unexpectedly announced last month that it was winding up the organisation this year. Last month Maribyrnong councillor Grant Miles said the end of the Big West Festival was as much a shock to the council as to the public and artists. Save Big West spokesman Hoang Nguyen on Monday said it would be very difficult for a new festival to arise if Maribyrnong council split the funding. “We were working on the assumption that the council was trying to keep the $85,000 available for anything to have a chance of getting up,” he said. “It would mean there was a better chance of speaking to other funders like Creative Victoria. “Council has known about our efforts to do something to fill the Big West vacuum and we were working under the assumption that that funding may be available.” Benjamin Millar

Brooklyn man charged with murder
By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona North university student is the youngest person so far to put her hand up for the Hobsons Bay council election. Hue Man (pronounced Way Man) Dang, who arrived in Australia from Vietnam in 2001, will turn 19 in the election month of October. The bachelor of science student said she had not decided which ward to stand in or who to preference. “I’m trying to focus a lot more on policies rather than politics right now and, of course, I won’t really know who will be running until September 20 when the names come out, so there’s no point in worrying and thinking too much about it now when I really can’t tell who will actually be in there and who I can give my preferences to,” Ms Dang said. “I think, in a sense, one thing that people would really question a lot about me is kind of, you know, am I too young, am I really inexperienced. “But I feel that, as a young person, I have a lot of energy to give out to the community and I think the age that I am doesn’t really indicate how much love and how much I want to see this community grow and how much I care for it.” Nominations officially open September 15 and close September 20. The majority of councillors statewide are aged over 46 and the largest age group is 56-65, according to Municipal Association of Victoria data.
Homicide Squad detectives have charged a 30-year-old Brooklyn man following the death of a Hoppers Crossing man last month. Nuri Balla was arrested by police last Wednesday and appeared at an out of sessions hearing at the Melbourne West police station that night, charged with one count of murder. He appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court the following day. The matter has been adjourned until December 15 for a committal mention. Aaron Burnett, 28, died after being assaulted at a Kealba service station carpark in the early hours of July 3. It is believed Mr Burnett sustained serious injuries after being attacked in a truck parking area at the rear of the Caltex service station on Sunshine Avenue. Mr Burnett was dropped off outside the front doors of Werribee Mercy Hospital’s emergency department about 5am on July 3. He died a short time later. It is unclear why he was taken to Werribee Mercy Hospital, which is about 27 kilometres away from the service station, whereas Sunshine Hospital is less than four kilometres away. Charlene Macaulay

Lone backer for heritage overlay By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council will ask the planning minister to intervene after one person objected to the removal of heritage protection from Mobil’s Altona refinery – protection that even the local historical society was unaware of. As reported by Star Weekly in April, the council voted to remove the protection, paving the way for removal of a 76-metre catalytic cracking unit, a vertical cylinder dubbed ‘the cracker’, which was once the tallest structure
in Melbourne. The heritage overlay means Mobil has to apply for a planning permit for all buildings and works, including demolition and routine maintenance and repairs. When the heritage overlay was introduced in 2003, its aim was to identify circumstances that didn’t require a permit. However, this never eventuated. Mobil spokeswoman Melanie Saliba said the overlay added an administrative burden to both Mobil and the council. It appeared everything was on track for the

overlay’s removal until the council received an objection from Altona North resident David Clark. In his brief submission, Mr Clark wrote: “From the stories I’ve been told regarding the area and the refinery, I feel the site has
significant heritage value. As the existing heritage overlay was applied only a short time ago in 2003, others clearly agree with the significance of the site. For this reason I oppose any changes to the overlay.” The council is now obligated to ask the planning minister to convene an independent planning panel to decide the matter. However, ministerial discretion may be applied. The refinery was used to produce lubricants and bitumen from 1949 and became one of Australia’s main petroleum fuel plants in 1954.
Pipedreams realised A spectacular steel creation by acclaimed sculptor Matthew Harding is welcoming visitors to a popular Maribyrnong park. Maribyrnong council commissioned the Pipedreams public sculpture for Thompson Reserve, opposite Highpoint shopping centre and at the entrance to Pipemakers Park. The $170,000 public artwork stands eight metres high and 12 metres wide, and incorporates 32 kilometres of stainless-steel rods and tubes. In-ground lighting will help cast shifting patterns at dusk. The design was inspired by the industrial heritage of the site, particularly the steel cages built to reinforce concrete pipes produced for many decades at Pipemakers Park. The hollow central form reflects the flow of the nearby Maribyrnong River. area’s history and acted as a gateway to the park. “This incredible sculpture at the entrance to Pipemakers Park certainly enhances the experience of visitors and passersby,” he said. “Pipedreams beautifully captures and reflects the key aspects of the rich pipe-making history at our well loved Pipemakers Park. It also artistically incorporates the flow of the Maribyrnong River.” The project follows other public art commissions by the council in recent years, including the Welcome Bowl in Footscray’s Nicholson Street mall and works to celebrate the opening of the Braybrook Community Hub. Stalwarts of the people hailed By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown history stalwart Clifford ‘Cliffy’ Gibson has been remembered as a giant of a man, always keen to share his knowledge of the suburb’s maritime past. Hobsons Bay council last week paid tribute to Mr Gibson and two other notable locals who have recently died – past Williamstown mayor Herbert ‘Bert’ Clancy and Hobsons Bay’s first Malta-born citizen of the year Paul Cassar. The Williamstown Historical Society and Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society were among groups that expressed condolences at the death of Mr Gibson, who was aged 86. Mr Gibson’s family in Williamstown can be traced back to 1839, and he was renowned for his knowledge of local history. Cr Angela Altair described him as a selfless and dedicated citizen. “Cliffy was quite a slightly built fellow, but an absolute giant in terms of the encyclopedic knowledge of Williamstown’s history,” she said. “He belonged to various sailing clubs, but in particular the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, where he was Rear Commodore, and he was certainly involved with the Royals. “He was part of the Fort Gellibrand restoration, and I can still recall when I first met him on council, Cliffy in his battered ute taking me down there and with great glee taking me down those tunnels … it was like going back in time – he was so colourful with his descriptions.” Fellow historian Brian Haynes said he could always rely on Cliffy for an article in the historical society’s newsletter. “Cliffy was a life member of the Williamstown Historical Society and a wonderful asset to

many, with his depth of knowledge on our maritime history, and was always keen to share or assist others freely,” Mr Haynes said. “Cliffy, never asking for favour, donated so much of his time and energies into many activities of his beloved Williamstown, and he will be sorely missed by so many around the town,” Mr Haynes said. “His extensive historical collection will remain as his legacy for others to utilise and learn.” The council also expressed condolences at the passing of Herbert ‘Bert’ Clancy, 96, who was a Williamstown councillor for 15 years and mayor from 1973-74, and Paul Cassar, 79, Hobsons Bay’s first Malta-born citizen of the year, and Maltese Bocce Club president, who was recognised for his work with migrants.

Asylum seeker cash a job lot
By Benjamin Millar A Kingsville cricket bat maker is pulling up stumps on his inner-west business. Lachlan Fisher, of Fisher Bat & Willow, said cheaper, mass-produced bats from India had slashed demand for his custom-made bats. But he is yet to declare his innings entirely, vowing to continue plying his trade from country Victoria. “We are selling the property here – the house is on the market – but the business will keep going,” he said. “The cheap imports … have knocked us around a bit and the participation in cricket is dwindling – a lot of clubs are folding.” Mr Fisher, 60, has handcrafted nearly 15,000 willow bats in his Williamstown Road workshop in the past two decades. But he says cheap labour in India means imported willow bats can be bought for well under the cost of his bats, which can take hours to craft and cost up to $600. “I love making bats, but the good old days are gone,” he said. “The market has well and truly gone – they only come to me when they want the quality of our bats.” Mr Fisher has established a number of willow plantations across the state to supply wood for his bats. He says the trees have reached harvesting size so he plans to set up a workshop in Camperdown in country Victoria and create bats to order, as well as continuing to carry out repairs. “I reckon I’m better now at 60 than I was 15 years ago,” he said. “It’s very physical activity, but I reckon I can knock them out pretty well.” Village Real Estate will auction 126-128 Williamstown Road, Kingsville, on Saturday, August 27.
Asylum seekers wanting the skills needed to find work have been given a boost thanks to more than $550,000 being awarded to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC). The funding will assist the Footscray-based centre in helping more than 1000 asylum seekers access training and in setting up a hotline to provide advice to training organisations on how to best support asylum-seeker students. State Training and Skills Minister Steve Herbert announced the funding during a visit to the ASRC on Monday. Mr Herbert said the funding was part of the government’s plan to expand the Asylum Seeker VET program. “We need to make sure people living in Victoria have access to training so they can improve their own lives and also give back to the community,” he said. “This funding for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre will mean training providers around the state will have better access to information about how they can help asylum seekers.” Mr Herbert said vocational courses were a vital way of helping asylum seekers get work or go on to further study. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the government was working to beat disadvantage in the west. “This includes helping asylum seekers who have significant challenges, including limited resources, to reconnect with education and training.” Benjamin Millar

Projections really shine A series offering a twist on traditional Aboriginal stories is just one of the projects lighting up Footscray as part of the States of Blue: West Projections Festival. Footscray artist Paola Balla, a Wemba-Wemba and Gunditjmara woman with migrant Calabrese and Chinese bloodlines, said her projections were drawn from the series Unsettling or the True Story of When Mok Mok Came To The Big Smoke. “She is a matriarchal character I have been told about since I was a little girl,” Balla said. The slide-show is paired with music by Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline as the series is used to tackle patriarchy, family violence and the weight of expectation on women across cultures.
The project is just one of the many art projections and installations lighting up 22 Footscray sites from 6-10pm nightly as part of Bluscray Bluscray, celebrating Victoria University’s centenary. West Projections producer Chantal Wynter said nightly projection displays were bathing Footscray in blue with the work of artists such as Skunk Control, EGO and Robert Mangion. The festival includes four free evening walks featuring artist talks and performances and will run until September 11. Adversity inspires a star Darren Collins remembers it being a particularly wet and windy day when he broke his tibia and fibula bones clean in two. The then 24-year-old was playing soccer. He was positioned as goalkeeper and slid out to stop the ball. “The opposition player slid towards me, a big rangy guy. The impact of him hitting me broke my shin guard and my leg,” he recalls. The trauma of the injury led to chronic exceptional compartment syndrome, which causes pain, swelling and sometimes disability. In Mr Collins’ case, his lower left leg ultimately required amputation. The Braybrook resident describes life post-surgery as a “rollercoaster ride”. “You go through so many stages; at first it was the disappointment of not being able to do that any more [soccer] … I didn’t have any counselling. I then split up with my wife. “My outlook changed. I was just ambling through life without any sense of why I was doing anything.” The turning point was meeting his New Zealander-born wife Zoë when living in London. The couple moved to Australia 10 years ago, married, and now have two children. But Mr Collins says he “lost his way” again after the pair had children. So the 41-year-old took matters into his own hands earlier this year, quit his job as an accountant to become a part-time motivational speaker and life coach, and a part-time chief financial officer for a government-funded health body. “I realised I was doing lots of things for the wrong reasons. I want to set an example for other amputees and my kids, that when you set your mind to something its achievable.”

Most new councillors underestimate how much work and reading is involved in the role, a recent survey has found. The Municipal Association of Victoria’s survey of 170 sitting councillors found 63 per cent had not expected such a heavy workload and 72 per cent didn’t realise how much reading was required. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said she set aside time on Sundays to get through some of the 100 to 200 pages of reading required each week. “The workload for me means I am usually out at least three nights a week attending council-related meetings, forums or committees, in addition to helping, volunteering and attending community events on weekends or week days,” she said. Another Hobsons Bay councillor, Carl Marsich, said the reading could be very challenging and involve complex planning matters. “Balancing work and family commitments with council responsibilities and duties sometimes requires significant flexibility and supportive family,” he said. Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Sandra Wilson said single-issue candidates must realise that if elected they needed to be across all councillor duties. “Including council meetings, which are every Tuesday at the moment, I can be out three to four nights a week,” she said.

Mick, Newport Football Club’s No.1 ticket holder, said that as the father of three young girls, he was keen to help. “We all have daughters that will grow up and face these type of situations,� he said. “My father actually passed away from cancer but it was bowel cancer. “Mark Williams and I are playing the EJ Whitten game coming up – that’s for

Participants in the third annual Sons of the West men’s health program have wrapped up another season of learning about healthier living. Run over 12 locations across six different council areas including Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, the program kicked off at the start of June and wraps up tonight with a graduation ceremony for almost 500 participants. The free program aims to improve men’s mental and physical health through workshops, presentations, events and experiences. The program tackles health issues responsible for Maribyrnong males having the lowest life expectancy in urban Victoria at 76.5 years. Plan to rein in bottle shop harm By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is seeking to limit negative impacts from bottle shop clusters and late-night licensed venues under a new policy released for community feedback. The Minimising the Harm of Alcohol Policy Statement draws on numerous studies about alcohol-related harm, including NSW research on Sydney’s controversial lockout laws. “Research into the closing times of on-premises venues has found relationships
between closing times, violence and disorder,” the council’s policy states. “There is also general recognition that licences extending beyond 1am bring higher risk.” The council proposes to align the hours of alcohol consumption on footpaths to its footpath trading code of practice, which stipulates no service after 11pm for hotels and bars or 1am for restaurants and cafes. It also proposes to map all licensed venues in Hobsons Bay to identify clusters, which the council will consider when assessing new
applications for licensed venues and liquor outlets. The council will also map locations where licensed venues are prohibited, preferred or discouraged. The council’s policy cites a VicHealth study which found that eight or more packaged liquor outlets within one kilometre doubled the probability of problem drinking. “Within Hobsons Bay, Williamstown and Altona have the highest concentration of packaged liquor outlets in the municipality,” the policy states. “There are few clusters of late-night licensed
venues in Hobsons Bay. They are generally located independently of each other, and in close proximity to residential areas. “The exception is Williamstown, where there are two late-night venues within walking distance of each other [The Rifle Club and Vic Inn].” The council will also work with police to monitor and review alcohol-free zones in Hobsons Bay. The council is inviting feedback on the Minimising the Harm of Alcohol Policy Statement until September 21.
Long wait for recognition This week marks 50 years since the Battle of Long Tan in South Vietnam. To commemorate, the Vietnam Veterans Association Melbourne West sub branch is inviting people to remember both those who did not return and those who survived. Sub branch secretary Ray Matthew says the Long Tan commemoration is perhaps the most significant event since the belated welcome home parade vets received in 1987. “It’s important recognition of the people that went and their service,” he said. “When we came home from the Vietnam war, it was a different Australia to that we had left. We were somewhat shunned by the government of the day, by some RSLs and by some of the public. For nearly 10 years, we didn’t often admit to our own friends and workmates that we had served in Vietnam. “Vietnam veterans see ourselves as survivors, not victims. The Vietnam Veterans
Association has been very therapeutic for us. The ceremonies are about remembering the people we trained with, the people who never made it back, and the mateship,” Mr Matthew said. “We did everything together, and we remember it 50 years on. Together then and together again.” The 50th anniversary ceremony in Werribee will begin at Station Place cenotaph at 7am on Thursday. Altona RSL will host a service at 9am the same day. Vietnam Veterans Association members will then head to the Shrine of Remembrance for another service. During the battle of Long Tan, 108 young Australians and three New Zealanders from D Company, Royal Australian Regiment, resisted an attack by more than 1500 Viet Cong forces that resulted in 17 D Company members and one armoured corps trooper being killed. MY PLACE Yarraville author Maxine Beneba Clarke has just published her memoir, and has a children’s book due out soon, but she tells Benjamin Millar she still finds time to enjoy nature and her favourite bookshops. I moved to the inner west about four and a half years ago. I really like the west because it’s so diverse, after my experience growing up somewhere not so diverse. I like that my kids are growing up somewhere they have people they see themselves reflected in. I think there are other places in Melbourne that are diverse, but I also knew there was a vibrant artistic community here, and it’s so close to the city, so it ticked all the boxes. How has living here influenced your work? Footscray itself has worked its way into my writing. I set a lot of my fiction in the west. I can’t believe the west hasn’t been written about more … it’s just such a unique area. What are your favourite local spots? I really like it down by the Maribyrnong River, behind Footscray Community Arts Centre. There is something about being near the water. I also live quite near Cruickshank Park, a long park that runs through Yarraville. I like anywhere around the Sun Bookshop, I’m forever in that bookshop, and all my money goes there. What are your latest writing projects? As well as my memoir The Hate Race, I have
been working on a children’s book The Patchwork Bike with [Yarraville artist] Van Rudd. It’s been this amazing meeting of minds. We both have kids around the same age, and we’ve noticed there is not much diverse kids’ writing. People are hungry for something a little bit different; readers are people looking for a journey. What inspired you to publish a memoir? What interests me is writing the kind of book that I have never read. The Hate Race is essentially a memoir about growing up black in Australia in the ’80s and ’90s. My parents migrated from London to Australia, and it’s essentially a school-yard memoir. It’s partly a book about bullying and racism, and what happens when everyone is complicit – what kind of person does that turn you into? Are you more hopeful for kids growing up today? I see a lot of hope around the arts community and in what I see among my kids’ friends. They don’t seem to have the same hang-ups that kids whose parents grew up in white Australia may have, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of angst about it. I have a lot of hope, but it’s still not getting through to the political class. I feel the election of Pauline Hanson is almost another Brexit, an older generation essentially dictating what is happening.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir discovers a cosy new Japanese eatery in the west Shinmai Tasty is a new Japanese eatery at Edgewater, its fit-out done in time-honoured Japanese style. It is cosy, welcoming and feels comfortably lived in, despite its newness. The menu is a smartly devised two-page affair that runs from sushi and sashimi, through to salads, mains, bentos and dessert. There are many classic dishes to be had, and a few that appeal because they’re unusual. The dining room is long, with one whole wall adorned with two utterly gorgeous murals. Here’s a round-up of what Consider The Sauce tried over two visits: Miso soup ($3.50, served free with bentos) – very nice without being great, packed with lots of seaweed and very fine tofu cubes. Nasu kara chips ($8.50) – these proved a big hit and were, to my mind, stupendously fine. The tempura batter was very good and the long eggplant strands within cooked to molten, delicious perfection … served with mayo and dusted with chilli … a knockout! Edemame ($5) – salt-sprinkled soy beans were a nice snack before more substantial fare. Wagyu beef tataki ($16.50) – I am used to beef tataki variations being heavily marinated, very garlicky and served with a raw egg. This was something different and lighter, the beautiful beef having something of a citrus tang about it. I tasted neither the agedashi tofu ($9.50) nor the mixed tempura ($14.50), but the very happy recipient of both could hardly have been more emphatic in declaring both outright winners.
SHINMAI TASTY Address: 44 Edgewater Boulevard, Maribyrnong Phone: 9317 3830 The sushi fan orderers of the mixed sushi/ sashimi ($38) were a little underwhelmed. Big tick for the sashimi – “indifferent” the word used to describe the sushi. My soy udon chicken soup ($16.50) was superb, with super broth that was both delicate and robustly flavoured. Along with the fat, slippery noodles and a goodly amount of seaweed, right there in the middle was a whole chicken thigh – a first for me, that I can recall, in a lifetime of eating noodle soups. I wondered how I was going to eat it – but it was so beautifully cooked, not to mention supremely tasty, that I had no trouble getting the meat from the bones. Bentos of sashimi ($22.50), beef teriyaki ($20.50) chicken teriyaki ($19.50) and unagi (eel, $23.50) were all enjoyed. Green tea brulee – so creamy and scrumptious, and an outright bargain at $5.90. Not everything we tried at Shinmai Tasty unequivocally hit the spot … but some dishes did. We reckon this is a very welcome addition to the Japanese options available in the west. SPORT Scray’s hot form a good sign for finals Footscray is on a roll in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Scray nailed its 10 successive wins when it dismantled MCC 26-7 on home turf at the Albert Ground on Saturday. Scray co-captain Chris Plumb told Star Weekly his team was peaking at the right time. “Considering where we started at and how the year has progressed, we’re at full strength right now,” he said. “We’re pretty hot at the moment – we’re playing a better style of lacrosse than we were at the start of the season, so we’re happy with the team and the way we’re going. “It’s a good feeling down at Footscray Lacrosse Club at the moment.” Footscray should be able to secure a top-two finish when it faces newly promoted Moreland
at Angliss Reserve on Saturday. An 11th straight victory will give the Scray a finals double chance, which is crucial in a season in which three clubs – the Scray, Williamstown and Surrey Park – have stood out and would fancy their chances of taking out the title. “It doesn’t really matter for us – first or second, we’d be happy with that,” Plumb said. “Coming into finals, it’s always good to get some cobwebs out and work on some stuff. “I think the boys played well against MCC and the score reflects that.” Footscray’s attack was at its menacing best on Saturday. James Lawerson picked up nine points, including six goals and three assists. Kyle Rhatigan was a sharpshooter with seven goals and one assist.
“The whole attack line played pretty good,” said Plumb, who had three goals and three assists. Williamstown was made to work for its 12-8 win over Malvern at Fearon Reserve. Ben Newman led the way for the top-of-the-ladder Fearons with three goals. In women’s state league, Footscray had a nail-biting 8-7 win over ladder leader Newport. Stephanie Kelly and Sarah Smith scored three goals each for the Scray, while Marlee Paton was the Porters’ top points scorer with two goals and three assists. Morgan Mitchell has been making her mark in the 400 metres on the track and the Footscray Swimming and Water Polo Club has been watching the men’s water polo team with great interest. Jarrod Gilchrist and James Stanton-French are Sharks members and both have been a big part of the men’s team’s performances in Rio. Gilchrist is making his Olympic debut while this is the third Games for goalkeeper Stanton-French. The Footscray club also boasts Australian women’s team manager Lynne Morrison and Daniel Flahive, one of the tournament referees. Well done to all concerned.

coaching merry-go-round at all football levels is in full swing. Brett Montgomery exited the Bulldogs last week, so he won’t be appearing on the Inside The Kennel show this week. Anthony Eames was announced as the 2017 Spotswood coach last week. He takes over from Tom Langlands, who will continue as a player. Eames – a former Altona and Williamstown premiership coach – had success earlier in the year with the WRFL interleague side. He has a very talented group of young players coming up from the Woodsmen’s under-19 program.

Magic moments missed By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic will have to wait at least another week to secure the FFV men’s state league 1 championship. The Magic had one hand on the title on more than one occasion during a ridiculously entertaining 4-4 draw with Westgate on the road at Ardeer Reserve on Saturday evening. Two leads during the game went by the wayside for Magic, and when the dust settled on a free-flowing game beset by defensive errors from both sides, eight goals split evenly was a fitting result. Magic coach Vlado Tortevski told Star Weekly it was the first time this season his side had broken down so badly defensively. “All season, the defence has been a strong part of the team, but this time they fell apart for some reason,” he said. “We had three or four players down at the same time and when you have that many passengers in the team, it’s hard to get a good result. “Anyway, we came out with a draw. We have to sit down, talk about it and analyse
everything, and I hope it’s not going to happen again. I must give credit to Westgate because they fight. They had a good spirit to achieve something and in the end they got a point.” There will be the odd conspiracy theorist suggesting that Altona manipulated the result in order to win the title on its home ground. Tortevski laughed off any suggestions of that, but he admits the party will be bigger if the Magic can secure victory over Keilor Park on Saturday evening. “It would probably be a bigger celebration at home, but this is nothing to do with the game we had at Westgate,” the coach said. “The game was one of the weakest performances we’ve had in a long time. It was a very exciting game for the supporters but not for the coaches watching.” Jon McShane continued his stellar season for Altona with a double. He’s the leading goalscorer in the competition, with 16 from 17 games. McShane was a stand-out performer as was Jason Hayne, who also found the back of the net. City has won its past seven games to move to within three points of shaky second-placed Essendon Royals with three games to go. In state league 3, FC Williamstown might have to settle for third after slipping six points behind second-placed Westvale with just nine points up for grabs in the season. The Blues had a 1-1 draw with Fawkner Zaparas – not the result they wanted to keep the pressure on Westvale. Melbourne City had a 3-2 win over Western Eagles after a double to Simba Saidi. In state league 4, Altona North lost to newly crowned champions Brimbank Stallions 5-1, while in state league 5, Laverton Park was hammered 7-1 by the Keilor Wolves.

Sun shines for star in moon boot By Lance Jenkinson Daniel Venables is as impressive with his attitude off the field as he is with his football ability on it. He’s a humble young man even after claiming All-Australian honours at the AFL under-18 national championship and an invitation to the AFL’s draft combine. Venables has a huge future in the game, touted as a potential first round draft pick later this year. But he’s having nothing to do with the hype. “I stay away from all that talk, to be honest,” the Taylors Lakes resident says. “You never know what’s going to happen until draft night. I don’t even know if I’ll get picked up, so I’ll wait and see and take it as it comes.” Venables has let his football do the talking. He’s a star rotating between midfield and up forward for the Western Jets in the TAC Cup, and his impact was profound in helping Vic Metro become national champions. The AFL recruiters wanted to see more of Venables, with five or more teams inviting him to test at the draft combine, but an ill-timed foot injury has somewhat dampened that prospect. Venables is hobbled in a moon boot for six weeks and the remainder of his season is a wipe-out, meaning the physical aspects of testing at the combine won’t be completed. Any question marks over Venables’ physical capabilities were put to rest while playing for Vic Metro as he burrowed into packs with force and used his strength over the ball as a weapon. He played his first TAC Cup game at the age of 15, so the recruiters would have enough of a sample to reference before the draft.

Seagulls drop the ball in milestone match Williamstown has suffered a major letdown, losing on a day when three of its players were celebrating VFL milestones. The Seagulls, defending champions, were below their usually excellent best in an 18-point loss to Essendon at Windy Hill on Sunday. It was the Gulls’ second loss in as many weeks and it will likely cost them a top-two berth and home final. The result left a bad taste in the mouths of milestone players Willie Wheeler (100 games) and David Fahey and Dylan Conway (both 50 games). Seagulls football manager Chris Dixon said the side’s inability to honour those players with a win was disappointing. “It’s something as a club that we really pride ourselves on – getting up for those milestone games – so it adds to the disappointment of the day,” he said. Williamstown prides itself on being a tough side to breach defensively, so conceding 119 points to Essendon was a recipe for disaster. “It was a bit too much of a shoot-out for our liking,” Dixon said. “That’s the most we’ve conceded against us in over a year.” Williamstown has tumbled to third on the ladder. With the Seagulls having the bye in the last round after Saturday’s trip to the Northern Blues, there is little hope of them returning to the top two. But that does not mean the meeting with the Blues is akin to a dead rubber. “It looks more than likely we’ll finish third,” Dixon said. “For us, the last game is really about getting some form and going into the finals with a bit of confidence.” One player back in form is Seagulls midfielder Michael Gibbons, who has enjoyed his best season at VFL level, but had his colours lowered a week earlier against Footscray. “It was really good to see him bounce back,” Dixon said. “He, by his own admission, had his worst game of the season last week. He responded well from that and was clearly our dominant midfielder on the ground.” Seagull bigs Nick Meese and Ayce Cordy worked extremely hard against Essendon’s bevy quality ruckman.
With a football club’s network of recruiters and ability to source information about a player without going directly to the player himself, there is no point sugar-coating anything in the conversations. “When they come to your house, you talk to them for about an hour and they want to find out who you are,” Venables says. “As long as you’re honest with them, being yourself and not trying to be anyone else, that’s pretty much it.” In fact, you can’t do much more in your final year of under-age football than go to the national championships and be rated among the top 18 players at the carnival. Venables puts his progress down to a hardwork ethic and support network. His mum and dad are there for him through thick and thin, and he has good sounding boards in Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School links Ken Fletcher and John Nicholis and Western Jets region manager Shane Sexton and coach Torin Baker. “I know that when you put the hard work in and dedicate yourself, you get the rewards and the footy gods look after you,” Venables said. “I got a running coach and extra gym sessions. “I’ve done everything I possibly can [from a playing standpoint].” Venables is the monthly nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star Award. The award is run by Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly. Venables will receive $1000 donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club and other prizes to assist in his sporting goals. The award recognises young athletes in the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at a state and/or national level.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Seagulls as it puts them behind the eight ball for a finals berth.

Western Jets have reason to smile after snapping a five-game losing streak in TAC Cup. The Jets led at every change to hold off the fast-finishing Bendigo Pioneers by 32 points on the road at the Queen Elizabeth Oval. Lachlan Fogarty was hot for the Jets with 29 possessions and seven tackles, while Cameron Rayner put on a show with seven goals. The Jets will face Calder Cannons at RAMS Arena in Craigieburn on Saturday from 11am.

Vikings steel for finals assault Not all of Altona coach Saade Ghazi’s wishes have come true in his first season at the WRFL division 1 club, but he is not that far off. Ghazi achieved his main goal of taking the Vikings to the finals, but has fallen one win short of his target of 10 home-and-away wins for the season. Perhaps the 10th win will be reserved for a special occasion in this Sunday’s elimination final against Spotswood at Burbank Oval. “It’s a good reward for the group and the club to make the finals,” Ghazi told Star Weekly. “They won eight games last year, so you want to improve every year. Nine was going to be the bare minimum, but 10 would’ve been lovely.” Still fresh in Ghazi’s mind was the previous week’s narrow loss to a hungrier Sunshine Kangaroos with nothing but pride to play for. It cost the Vikings third spot and a finals double chance, when all was said and done. The Vikings atoned in a big way on Saturday, thrashing Albion by 67 points and gaining the boost needed on the eve of the finals. “If we did the right thing last week, we
would’ve finished third,” he said. “We missed out on the top three by three or four per cent. “So it was important we finished it off in the right way, and [we] go into a finals series on a positive.” It does not get much bigger than Altona locking horns with Spotswood in a sudden death final. The two Hobson’s Bay clubs are long-time rivals, and that has been amplified in recent times. The clubs faced off in the 2012 grand final when the Vikings got the spoils by one point over inaccurate Woodsmen. To add further heat to the rivalry, it was announced during the week that the Vikings’ 2012 premiership coach Anthony Eames would return to Spotswood as coach for next season. “For us to progress and improve as a group, we have to win this week and then, as you know, you get greedy and want to win the week after. “We’re in it to win finals’ games, it’s as simple as that,” Ghazi said. Post not ready to quit By Lance Jenkinson You hear it all the time, there’s more to life than footy. Altona playing assistant coach Jayden Post has been grappling with this in recent weeks. When Altona runs out for its elimination final bout with Spotswood at Burbank Oval on Sunday, Post will be absent, in a playing sense, but switched on from a coaching perspective. Post is the Vikings’ most important player from a structural point of view. A smart former AFL player who can be used as a swingman from defence to forward when it suits the team at a particular time, Post can also pinch hit in the ruck. If Vikings’ coach Saade Ghazi was asked to nominate one player he did not want missing the finals, it would be Post. Three weeks ago, Altona’s worst fears were realised when Post was cut down by an innocuous career-threatening injury. After being on the receiving end of a couple of corked thighs, it was revealed Post had burst an artery, which put an immediate end to his season, and his football career in jeopardy. “It was quite threatening to his health,” Ghazi said. “We thought he’d never play again. “It was a bit of a freak accident and he ended up with about 25 stitches down his thigh. “It was a shock when you get the call on a Sunday and he’s saying I’ve got to go into surgery. “I thought it was something minor,” Ghazi said. “But, as I discovered, it wasn’t.” Post was delivered better news by his doctors last week. The 26-year-old, who played 30 games for Richmond after graduating through the Western Jets, has now been advised that he should be able to continue playing football after he undergoes a long rehabilitation process. Post has informed the Vikings that he intends to make use of his second chance, too. “We’ve got some good news this week to say, if he rehabs well, he can give it a go again next year,” Ghazi said. “He’s got a lot of rehab ahead of him, and is probably not going to be able to run for three or four months. “We’re not going to see much of him before Christmas, but he’s put his hand up to come back next year and give it a go, at this stage. “We were only concerned about his health, so there’s a bit of water to go under the bridge. “He can still play a role this year; he’s the senior assistant coach at the club, so he’ll be able to give me another set of eyes, like he’s been doing the last two games.”

Spotswood signs Eames When you bring in a coach of the calibre of Anthony Eames, you make no secret of your desire to return to the top. Spotswood announced on Thursday night it had landed Eames’ prized signature after weeks of negotiations. Eames was the WRFL interleague coach this season, a premiership winning coach at Altona and a Liston Trophy winner as a Werribee player, so his credentials are second to none. Eames played junior football at Spotswood and a handful of senior games before moving up to the VFA, and has been hunted for a return to Spotswood. “We first approached Anthony in 2008 to come to us as coach, so to secure him now, when our list is as young as it is, it’s a very exciting prospect,” Woodsmen board member Tony Walshe said. “He is familiar with the club, but will reinvigorate us by giving an outsider’s perspective.” The Eames appointment is not the start of a new era, but a continuation of the foundations built by player-coach Tom Langlands. Langlands, a home grown product, will be staying on as a player. He will hand over the reins after three years of building a young list. “It all started a couple of years ago when we won two under-18 premierships in a row,” Woodsmen president Alan Given told Star Weekly. “We made an effort to try and sign as many of those players as we could, and the majority of kids we’ve played this year have been under 20. “When we start being successful, hopefully next year or the year after, they’ll say it was a quick turnaround, but it’s been a hard slog the past couple of years to get us back on the path to eventually get back to top of the ladder.” Spotswood is thrilled to have Langlands back for next season. The hard-at-it onballer is still at the peak of his power, having represented the successful WRFL combined side this season. Langlands will have a big impact when the Woodsmen take to the field in an elimination final against Altona at Burbank Oval on Sunday.
