Barking dogs show bite The campaign to ‘gather the pack’ is growing as the Western Bulldogs roar towards an unprecedented 40,000-member milestone. The club is nearing the magic mark for the first time, with a record 38,381 members on board as of Monday. The number of Dogs faithful is already well ahead of last year’s benchmark record of 36,213, the first time the west’s only AFL team has broken the 35,000 member barrier. Campaigns such as the ‘Lost Bulldog’ posters appearing all over the western suburbs have played a part, along with a stellar start to the season that sees the young Dogs in the top four of the AFL. Club chief David Stevenson said the club’s off-field projects are resonating with people, while the club’s on-field performances have been capturing people’s imagination, contributing to the sense of excitement. she looked forward to improved services as a result of the partial duplication. “Building a passing Loop to reduce the amount of single track will hopefully lead to less bypassing, although we do need to clarify the impact with the Level Crossing Removal Authority,” Ms Williams said. “At this stage the extent of works and time frame is unknown, but we are cautiously optimistic. “Clarification will also be sought about full duplication because the Public Transport Victoria network development plan only has duplicated tracks running to Seaholme and a single track through to Westona. “The entire project needs to be delivered within a reasonable time as the community

An 800-metre section of the Altona Loop will be duplicated as part of the Kororoit Creek Road level-crossing removal project. The track will be duplicated south to Kororoit Creek from where the Werribee line meets the loop. Works are expected to be under way by early next year. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said that at present, trains can’t pass each other on the Altona Loop – so if a city-bound train is delayed, oncoming trains are forced to wait on the Werribee line, causing delays on both lines in both directions. Ms Allan said building a second track would

provide a place for trains to pass each other, meaning trains running on time would not have to wait for trains that were running late. “We’re getting rid of the bottlenecks that choke our roads and rail network,” Ms Allan said. The level crossing’s removal will involve constructing a rail bridge over Kororoit Creek Road to carry the existing and new duplicated track. The line will be shut down for up to 90 days. Ms Allan said further duplication would be investigated while works were carried out. She said the decision to partially duplicate the Loop was the result of lobbying by advocates including the Altona Loop Group. Group spokeswoman Jennifer Williams said 1219971-HM10-16

‘Leave our level crossing alone’ By Goya Dmtryshchak Williamstown residents have started a Facebook group to unite against the state government’s plan to remove the level crossing at Williamstown North railway station. Vivienne Gray, administrator of the Keep the Crossing group, said Williamstown did not need or want an ugly overpass or underpass replacing the crossing. The government allocated $2.4 billion in its 2015-16 budget for the removal of 20 level crossings by 2018.

“Unbelievably, crossings at Williamstown North and Kororoit Creek Road, outside Mobil, fit into this category even though there are only six trains an hour on the Williamstown line and fewer on the Altona line,” Ms Gray said. “If both the Williamstown crossings earmarked for removal were left alone, that would mean a saving of $240 million, funds that could be better spent on public transport upgrades.” VicRoads did not report any casualty crashes involving drivers, cyclists or pedestrians at

the Williamstown North crossing in the five years to June 30, 2015. As reported by Star Weekly, other residents have urged the government not to remove the crossing, but until now they have not united as a group. One, Jason Bryce, said residents did not want to see a motorway going through Ferguson Street or a flyover going past heritage homes. Williamstown urban designer Philip Ward said a flyover would physically divide the community and destroy its village character.

Thai pie guys win top gong Two Altona mates who opened a bakery two years ago have hit the culinary heights with their Thai vegetable curry vegan crusty creation being declared Australia’s best pie. It’s the first time in the history of the Baking Association of Australia’s competition that a meat-free pie has won. Adrian Apswoude and New Zealand-born Doug Meijer launched their Ka Pies operation

in 2014, buying a Sunshine bakery, which left them with only $800 in the bank. Mr Apswoude said he was working in IT with Victoria Police when Mr Meijer, then a manager at Bunnings, heard about an old man selling a bakery. “Dougie went, ‘Let’s make New Zealand pies’, and I was like, ‘No way’,” Mr Apswoude said. “We made some, we tasted them – and they

tasted great. I was, like, let’s give it a crack.” The Thai vegetable curry pie was originally vegetarian before the pair realised that by eliminating butter they could market it to a wider audience. Up to eight journalists will lose their jobs following News Corp’s decision to close seven of its Leader community newspapers, including four in the west. The company informed the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) that the final editions of the Wyndham, Brimbank, Melton, Hobsons Bay, Berwick, Free Press and Melbourne newspapers would be published in the week beginning June 27. A bulletin to MEAA members said “increased competitive pressures and the size of the market” were behind the decision and between five and eight journalists would be made redundant. A News Corp Australia spokesperson confirmed the closure of the titles. “Leader Community News will focus on brands with strong audience engagement and solid advertising market share and will invest in and rejuvenate its portfolio of community titles,” the spokesperson said. “The reality is that in today’s fragmented market there is more competition than ever before and in some of our smaller markets, publishing a printed publication is not sustainable.” MEAA Victorian director Carolyn Dunbar said this was a devastating cut for community news. “MEAA members were told this morning that their papers will no longer exist in three weeks,” she said. “It’s just not good enough. “The company is required to consult with staff about major changes and the company should be drawing on the expertise of editorial staff on the ground before announcing cuts to titles.” Charlene Macaulay and Adem Saban

Art groups reel from cash slash By Benjamin Millar Footscray-based Western Edge Youth Theatre and Snuff Puppets are among many established western suburbs arts groups that have failed to secure four-year funding through the Australia Council for the Arts. Arts groups are being forced to slash programs and projects after missing out on vital federal funds, with Footscray Community Arts Centre the only group in Melbourne’s west to gain from the current round. The former arts minister George Brandis’s decision last year to rip $105 million out

of the annual pool distributed through his controversial Catalyst program forced the arts council to slash funding to small-to-medium companies and groups. Western Edge Youth Theatre general manager Sally Farr said there had already been a dramatic drop in the number of federally funded youth arts companies across Australia because of Senator Brandis’s focus on established companies, such as The Australian Ballet. Ms Farr said it would be four years before Western Edge could re-apply for ongoing funding, leaving it in a vulnerable position.

“I’ve been a general manager in the arts for 20 years and I have never witnessed a change at the federal level that has had such an impact,” she said. “The undermining of the Australia Council in this way is appalling and shows the whole reason they have been at arm’s length.” Ms Farr said the cuts to youth arts failed to recognise the positive social impacts of groups such as Western Edge through their engagement with vulnerable youth. “We have helped a number of young people who were feeling disconnected and have helped them choose a different path.”

Labor last week announced a new arts policy, promising an extra $80 million over four years for the Australia Council – and an end to the Catalyst fund. Opposition Leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten said arts funding “should never be a political plaything of the government”. The Greens last week promised to reverse the cuts to the Australia Council and invest an additional $270.2 million in the Australian arts sector. Greens arts spokesman Adam Bandt said a vibrant, well-resourced and independent arts community was core to any thriving society.

Laughter club is serious They say laughter is the best medicine and now people can get their weekly dose in Altona. Altona’s Carolyn Nicholson has started the Cherry Laughter Club, which meets at Cherry Lake at 10am every Saturday. “I’ve been doing it for 12 years,” she said. “I’ve been in India and done it with the founder, Dr Madan Kataria, the teacher of laughter yoga, and I’ve been made international ambassador of laughter yoga as well. “I’ve also been working on cruises doing laughter and happiness sessions.” Ms Nicholson said people who went along could expect to have fun and feel joy, less stress and pain relief. “It’s based on research that the body doesn’t know the difference between fake laughter or pretend laughter and real laughter,” Ms Nicholson said. “As soon as you pretend to laugh, or even chant, ‘Ho, ho, ha, ha, ha’, our

body thinks it’s real laughter and we begin to get the benefits. But we need to be laughing for at least 10 minutes to keep those benefits – a little giggle now and again is not enough. “The first time I did it I thought it was silly, but if a person stays for the entire session they feel so good at the end – it does really connect us with the inner child. “It’s a part of us that we ignore a lot of the time. “When we feel the benefits by the end of the half-hour session, people want to come back.” Details: 0413 821 636 Goya Dmytryshchak

Council blocks Struggle Street By Benjamin Millar Plans to film the second series of reality television program Struggle Street in Braybrook have been quashed after Maribyrnong council rejected the producer’s application to film in the area. Production company Keo Films Australia sought permission to film the controversial SBS program in the socially disadvantaged suburb. The Sydney-based producers were hoping it would be third time lucky after being rejected by Brimbank council for filming in Sunshine and Hume council for filming in Broadmeadows. Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the permit was denied because of the negative portrayal of suburbs, residents and disadvantage in the first series, filmed in the Sydney suburb of Mount Druitt. “While the producers may claim they ‘shine a light on social and economic disadvantage’, council does not see it in the same way,” Mr Wall said. “We don’t believe it will encourage progress, rather it will do the exact opposite.” Maribyrnong councillor Sarah Carter said there was no way the council could support “poverty porn” taking advantage of the Braybrook community. “I think it’s exploitation; they do nothing for the betterment of the individuals portrayed,” she said. “I’m worried less about the portrayal of the area and more about the impact on the individuals. It’s unethical to capitalise on their misfortune.”

Cr Carter said the majority of Braybrook residents would support the ban. The Victorian Public Tenants Association, the peak body representing public housing tenants in Victoria, wrote to Maribyrnong council urging them to reject the application. Gellibrand MP Tim Watts said he was wary the series would be used to exaggerate inaccurate stereotypes about the local community.

“Increased media and public attention to the complex nature of economic disadvantage, and what we can do as a society to address it, is welcome,” he said. “We will not welcome attempts to simplify or sensationalise these challenges for ratings or public attention.” Keo Film Australia’s website claims Struggle Street is not “an exercise in voyeurism” but rather aims to “give a voice to a neglected community”. An SBS spokesperson said Struggle Street was “first and foremost” a series about the issues of hardship. “The areas we will film in are areas where challenges reflect universal socio-economic issues and where we can get first-hand stories that help audiences to engage with the broader issues,” the spokesperson said. The series is scheduled to air in late 2017.

Tough guys talk books To be part of the Tough Guy Book Club, it really helps if you enjoy books, a beer and a chat. Alex Playsted, who launched the club’s Footscray chapter in February, says it is a great way to meet other people and read some classic novels. Tough Guy Book Club started in Collingwood and now has chapters in Hobart, Sydney, Brisbane, and even in Portland, USA. Mr Playsted says he first came across it when he spotted a flyer on a pole. “The Tough Guy part is a little bit tongue-in-cheek, the flyer looked more like an invite to a bikie club, but it’s more about the characters in the books.” A teacher, Mr Playsted has always enjoyed reading but never felt drawn to a more traditional book club.

The Yarraville resident said the books, which include classics by authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Heller and Harper Lee, feature archetypal male protagonists, creating discussion around what it is to be a man. “It’s really an exploration of masculinity and what it means to be a male in Australia,” Mr Playsted says. “We all bring our own experience, and it’s really pulled apart – it’s not about finding a definition at all.” The Footscray chapter meets the first Wednesday every month at Mona Castle Hotel, Seddon. Bank on a funding boost Inner-west community groups have had a funding boost of more than $20,000 thanks to local businesses and a community bank. Inner-west organisations who took part in the recent Seddon Community Bank Pitch Night shared in $21,555 given away to various projects and causes. Branch manager Graham Evans said the night had exceeded the bank’s expectations. “There were about 18 groups given three minutes each to pitch for a project or program they run,” he said. “At the end of the night a pile of cash was given away.” Mr Evans said giving different groups the chance to meet and learn about each other was important. Kingsville Baptist Cricket Club secretary Wes Henstridge said his club had received $1400 to help refugees with their registrations and other expenses. “We have got a number of Sri Lankan refugee players at our club; they have such enthusiasm, they really love the game.” The club also received a $500 sports equipment voucher from The Welcome Group, another beneficiary on the night. Welcome Group founder and president Penny Daly said her organisation’s pitch attracted almost $2000 towards a trailer to help refugee families settle in. “It’s such an amazing thing that businesses in the inner-west are willing to … donate to these grassroots causes.”

Group to fight flyovers By Goya Dmytryshchak Spotswood and South Kingsville residents have formed a lobby group to fight the possibility of four-storey-high freeway flyovers being built close to their homes. Transurban is considering five design options for its $5.5 billion Western Distributor tollway, which will create a new truck route to Melbourne’s port and widen the West Gate Freeway to 12 lanes from the M80 to Williamstown Road. Simon Birch, the Spotswood representative on Transurban’s community liaison group, said members of the newly-formed Spotswood/ South Kingsville Western Distributor Residents Group were opposed to several design options under consideration. Mr Birch spoke at a community meeting

“That has quite a big impact on residents along The Avenue, which is one of the closest streets. “That’s not acceptable as it currently is, so an extra two lanes each side of the freeway will create more noise.” Mr Birch said the group agreed on the long tunnel option but there was significant concern about how on-ramps on the south side of the freeway would impact on the neighbourhood. Hobsons Bay mayor Peter Hemphill said Thursday’s meeting confirmed some councillors’ views that Transurban had not consulted enough on the Western Distributor project and the process was being rushed. He said government representatives had agreed to attend another community meeting at Spotswood-Kingsville RSL Club at 6pm on Wednesday.

Islam takes on family violence Hobsons Bay’s Muslim community leaders are ready to play their part in fighting family violence as a new mosque being built at Newport places them in the spotlight. As the Australian Islamic Centre in Blenheim Road takes shape, community leaders have extended a hand towards tackling family violence in their own and the broader community. The contemporary centre, designed by world-renowned Sydney architect Glenn Murcutt in collaboration with local architect Hakan Elevli, is the subject of two upcoming documentaries and an exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. The centre, almost a decade in the making, is being funded and built by members of the local community. A pre-Ramadan conference in Newport last Thursday heard that part of the new building would be accessible from this Monday, the start of Ramadan, Islam’s holy month of fasting. The gathering, organised by the Australian Arabic Women’s Community Group, is an annual event where the community comes together to discuss issues of concern. Newport Mosque Imam Abdullah Al Hawari, whose speech was later translated, put into a religious context that violence against women was not tolerated in Islam. Group president Laila Houli said Islam had a very special place for women and it was important that they be protected against harm, especially when vulnerable.

Market musings The multi-layered history of an iconic Melbourne marketplace is proving valuable fodder for the imagination of a Footscray artist. Steven Rhall is one of 13 artists selected from more than 150 applicants to take part in the inaugural Public Art Melbourne Biennial Lab. The two-week project, focussing on Queen Victoria Market, has Rhall working with the lab’s co-convenors, Situations UK director Claire Doherty and Deakin University visual arts professor David Cross, to develop public art projects in an intensive laboratory setting. “It is a range of artists with different backgrounds and disciplines who are coming together to respond to the site in an artistic manner,” he said.

Rhall said his preparation had taken him deep into the history of Queen Victoria Market site, much of which has been developed upon a former cemetery. “Post-European arrival, it was first used as a cemetery and has slowly been seconded for use as a market,” he said. Rhall said the history lent a “curious morbidity” to the site and an opportunity to consider the often taboo topics of death and the afterlife. The State Library has launched a public appeal to raise $100,000 to buy the diary of an officer aboard the CCS Shenandoah, a Confederate raider vessel that docked at Williamstown on January 25, 1865. The Shenandoah was allowed into Williamstown to make repairs to its propeller bearings, which had been damaged in a storm. Opinion at the time was divided over whether to label the crew pirates or heroes. The crew had been tasked with sinking Yankee whaling ships because they were fighting the northern states.

While the US consul in Melbourne fumed at the presence of a ship known for burning its whaling fleets, the public was in awe. Thousands lined the docks of Williamstown to catch a glimpse of the ship and, when it departed, 42 local men stowed away to join the crew. Now, the library has been given the opportunity to buy the newly-discovered diary of Lieutenant Dabney Scales, which includes candid accounts about officers mixing with Victorians, and the ship’s journey after leaving Williamstown. The diary’s current owner is Melbourne rare books dealer Douglas Stewart, who has allowed

the library to house it while it attempts to raise funds for its purchase. State Library chief executive Kate Torney said the diary was a remarkable document written aboard the vessel that fired the last shot of the Civil War – fired, quite possibly, by an Australian. “The Shenandoah diary is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire a collection for Victoria that directly connects us with one of the major historical events of the 19th century, the American Civil War,” she said. The family of Altona North man Roger Bertocci, who was killed going to the aid of a pregnant woman being assaulted by her partner, has been the recipient of a spirited community effort. The family’s garden was given a makeover as Altona Rotary teamed up with the Jim’s Group and other organisations to fulfil Mr Bertocci’s last wish – a landscaped yard in which his youngest daughter could safely play. Mr Bertocci, 46, left behind his wife, Helen, and their two daughters, Ashlee and Brylee, now aged 15 and two. Mrs Bertocci she was in awe at the community support for the family. “I could see everyone put their heart and soul into making the garden just such a beautiful place for me and the girls,” she said. “It’s a wonderful area for Brylee to play and be safe in.

MY PLACE Bookshop owner Deb Force, last week named joint winner of Australia’s Bookseller of the Year award, tells Benjamin Millar Yarraville has been a great place to raise kids and share her love of books. I have lived in the Yarraville area for 27 years. I first opened The Sun Bookshop 18 years ago. I opened The Younger Sun, my children’s specialist shop, about 10 years ago. What do you like best about living/working here? I love the fact that Yarraville is not a place you drive through on your way to somewhere else. It is a little pocket, a destination. How has this area helped shape your shops? As the community changed so, too, did the bookshops, hence the Younger Sun’s recent move to a bigger shop in Murray Street. How did you come to run a bookshop and what is the best thing about it? It was really serendipity that lead to the opening of The Sun Bookshop. The best thing about owning a bookshop is, of course, so many books to read. What does being named bookseller of the year mean to you? Bookseller of the year is nominated by the book community. In my case it was my great staff who completely surprised me by nominating me. What is the enduring appeal of traditional printed books in the electronic age?

You cannot share a book on a screen the way you can pass books on – the tactile experience of a new book is something I never stop loving. How have you counteracted the impact of online giants such as Amazon and Book Depository? We focus on great knowledge, great books and, we hope, great customer service. What are some books that have meant the most to you and why? My main love is Australian writing – to see ourselves in literature is so important. What are your fondest memories of your earliest years in Yarraville? I think the feeling of community has always been strong in Yarraville. When I first moved here, I remember being so taken by the range of people in age and background chatting on the streets. What’s something people would be surprised to find out about you? I think people may be surprised to know I can’t dance, but I do give it a red-hot try. What are your favourite local cafes/eateries etc? My fave places to eat and drink in Yarraville are the Corner Shop, Barkley and Johnston, and Bopha Devi.

And with June 10 marking the start of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, police are urging drivers to take it easy on the roads. Operation Regal 2016 is a statewide police operation, aimed at reducing road trauma by increasing driver awareness and the benefit of planning your journey. Road policing adviser Senior Sergeant Ross Burbidge says the operation will run over the entire weekend, and all police personnel will be used to help reduce road-related deaths. “The approach is aimed at targeting the five facts which contribute to road trauma … speed, driver impairment, distraction, fatigue and seatbelts,” Senior Sergeant Burbidge said. “Motorists are urged to stay within the speed limit. Don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive. Leave mobile phones out of reach. Wear seatbelts and make sure you are well-rested.” With fatigue being one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads, planning your journey is an essential component of safe driving. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and take a 15-minute break at least every two hours, and never drive when tired,” Senior Sergeant Burbidge said. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings said statistics proved that speeding was a contributing factor in most road accidents. “Speeding increases both the risk of a crash and the severity of injuries sustained.” Mr Giddings said raise awareness of the community.

Vikings steal key win By Lance Jenkinson An indifferent start to the season for the respective clubs made Saturday a critical juncture for Altona and Sunshine Kangaroos in division 1 of the Western Region Football League. It was a case of win and stamp yourself a serious finals contender, lose and you’re on your way to a winter of playing catch-up. And Altona, led by ruckman Josh Rafferty, made its intentions loud and clear with a 33-point win at Grant Reserve to join the finals-hunting pack. “I’m very proud of our group,” Vikings coach Saade Ghazi told Star Weekly. “We played against good strong opposition, both clubs were 3-3 and obviously the win was crucial for both clubs. “It puts us a game clear in the five, so it was very important.” After starting the season a miserable 1-3, Altona has won its past three to gatecrash the top-five party. In their best form and with their strongest list to choose from, the Vikings fancy their chances against any side in the competition but rarely have all the ingredients come together. “We’ve had players in and out like other clubs, injured and unavailable through VFL [commitments] and overseas,” Ghazi lamented. “At this stage we’re happy with where we’re tracking.” As much as Altona yearned for instant gratification, it was always going to be a work in progress with a new coach on board. Ghazi’s rule is still in its infancy, but the players are picking up what he is trying to teach them and the brand of football he wants. “We’ve only been together for seven games,” he said. “It’s all right to train and have practice matches but the more we play, the better understanding we’ll get of a few things … what they expect from me, what they expect from the game plan. “And I don’t make assumptions on players, so I’m still trying to learn what they can and can’t do.” Ghazi’s early impression of the Vikings’ list is that it’s made up of six top-line players and a further 28 fighting to be in the ones. The top-end reserves are pressing for seniors selection, which is keeping the senior players on their toes. It is a list in healthy shape. “We’ve got a good group,” Ghazi said. “We’re very even after our best six, going all the way down from our seventh player to our 34th player on the list, so we have six or eight blokes really pushing for senior selection. “I think it’s good that there’s pressure coming from the reserves. “We have a few knocking on the door and having the pressure on those guys in the seniors is getting the best out of them.”

The club is in its 11th year and looks like one of the teams to beat for the Division 3 flag. Jets look beyond Big V By Lance Jenkinson The message from Western Jets coach Torin Baker was the same for his club’s “chosen six” for the Vic Metro squad and the unlucky ones who missed out – the hard work must go on. The Jets had Wilson Berry, Oscar Junker, Brock McGregor, Lachlan Fogarty, Daniel Venables and Brodie Romensky named last week in Vic Metro’s 38-player squad for the AFL under-18 national championships, with a number of worthy contenders missing out, including Judah Dundon and Harry Bult. To the players who were unfortunate to miss out, Baker said it was not a dead end, pointing to Melbourne draftee Clayton Oliver as a prime example of a player who can make the AFL without pulling on the Big V. “It’s a good reward for those boys who’ve had good TAC Cup form to get their opportunity with Vic Metro,” Baker told Star Weekly. “At the same time, we think we’ve got a couple of boys who are a bit unlucky to miss out … they’ve still got opportunities in front of them in terms of TAC Cup, playing really good footy there and potentially playing finals. “We’ve seen a lot of examples of players who, for whatever reason, didn’t make their state teams and then have been able to get drafted. “Clayton Oliver is a really good example of someone who didn’t play for Vic Country last year but got drafted pick three.” Conversely, being named in the Vic Metro squad is not a golden ticket to the big league. The much-scrutinised championships can damage a player’s reputation on poor form just as much as it can enhance it with good outings. The championships feature the best under-18s in the country and every possession will have to be earned. “They’ve been given the opportunity, but they’ve still got to make sure they perform and do themselves justice playing against the best in the country,” Baker said. “Their performances will be scrutinised at this level, but for the boys that don’t make it, their performances will also be scrutinised at the next level down.” Baker has urged his players to lap up the experience of playing for Victoria. “It’s a reward for their efforts in both training and playing over a long period of time, so they will be feeling proud and excited with the opportunity,” he said. While the Jets are disappointed for players who missed out on selection, overall they are happy with having six selected. “Two years ago, when they got the squad down to 25, the Western Jets had the most and Calder had the second most, then last year we had the least,” Baker said. “It can depend on the year and what talent is coming through.” Vic Metro’s first game in the under-18 championships will be against Vic Country at Simonds Stadium on Monday.

Footscray City Gymnastics Club is not seeking fame and glory at this weekend’s Victorian Gymnastics Championships. If their five representatives happen to get on the winners’ podium at the State Netball and Hockey Centre, they will take the glory, but they won’t be going in to win at all costs. The process for the gymnasts dubbed the ‘Fantastic Five’ is just as important as the outcome. “We see it as a learning opportunity,” Footscray City operations manager Tammy Robinson told Star Weekly. “We want them to go in and really enjoy the experience, enjoy the atmosphere at a great venue, and soak it all up. “We want them to compete at their absolute best, and then learn from that. “If they compete well, why did they compete well – so they can take it into the next time they

do something – or if they didn’t compete at their best, why didn’t they compete well, and learn from it. “For us it’s always about skills for life. We’re a chance to pick up some medals, but that’s not our focus at all.” Footscray City is proud of its Fantastic Five. Thomas Daddow (national level open 8), Dirk Arends (open 7), Tyler McLeod (open 7), Christian Pitsilos (open 6) and Vincent Pedersen (open 6) will aim to represent their club with distinction. Robinson tips a few pre-event nerves leading into the competition. “Anyone would be a little bit nervous,” Robinson said. “It really is a special event. It’s quite different to most of the competitions we compete in throughout the year. “This event has the big stadium seating, a venue set up for the competition, it’s

state-of-the-art and looks amazing, with big scoreboards and screens to show replays and lots of people from the clubs … and, of course, families and friends. It’s a really unique experience.” Daddow is both a competitor and a coach; the elder statesmen of the team has been with the club for more than 20 years and now coaches the four younger members, while he is guided by one of the other coaches, Jess Larsen. Daddow, Larsen and Robinson, who is also a coach, have important roles in settling their members down for competition. “Our job as a club and coaches is to make sure they’re focused on what they can control,” Robinson said. “We look at what we can control, how they prepare, how they warm up, how they focus and then the outcome will be what it is.” Lance Jenkinson

Lady Gators embrace an uphill journey

Starting from scratch – that is the difficult task that has faced Amanda Aldridge as she works on putting the Altona Lady Gators back on the map in the Big V basketball women’s division 2 after a season in recess. “It’s been a tricky first season for me,” Aldridge told Star Weekly. “I called on some of the old girls to come out of retirement to put the women’s side back on the mark.” Altona has built a competitive squad, but depth is an issue. The Lady Gators have a thriving crop of juniors, but they are simply not ready. Aldridge will drip feed the youngsters into the top side in coming seasons, but recruiting will need to be a focus. “I’m in talks with some players for next season already,” Aldridge said. She is predicting that only four out of 10 of this year’s crew will return because the others will go back into retirement.

Altona goes into the Queen’s Birthday break with a 2-9 record after running out of steam in a 66-46 loss to Blackburn at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna South on Sunday. The Lady Gators have endured a rough trot with injuries and it has taken its toll. “We’ve had some games where we could’ve won, but the past few weeks we’ve only been playing with seven players,” Aldridge said. “Players are having to play a lot more minutes, so there’s fatigue … we’re not able to get the job done. We’re just sort of scraping by and that’s all I can ask of the girls.” The biggest void has been that created by a foot injury to on-court general Lia Linigro, who faces a further month on the sidelines. “That’s been a blow,” Aldridge said. Veteran Emma Coyne has filled in admirably, but is not 100 per cent herself as she battles through a back injury.

Alysha Carden-David has been outstanding for the Lady Gators, averaging 20.7 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She has come straight up from youth league and has made an impact as a small forward. “She is just so well trained and drilled,” Aldridge said. Stacey Procak, who crossed to the Lady Gators from Coburg with Aldridge, is a consistent performer with 11.7 points and 10 rebounds a game. “I always give her a set task on some of the tough bigs,” Aldridge said. “She normally shuts down some of the key posts on the other team with her straight-up defence. “I can draw her out the wings on offence with her shooting, so she opens up the key for the others.” Lance Jenkinson

Strike force pure magic By Lance Jenkinson Goal-hungry Altona Magic striker Adamson Ajayi has continued his devastating form. Ajayi hit the back of the net for the ninth time in 10 games to lead the Magic to a 2-0 win over co-tenants Altona East Phoenix in a state league 1 local derby at Paisley Park on Saturday. “In the last four of five games he’s really played his best for the club,” Magic coach Vlado Tortevski told Star Weekly. “He’s in big form.” Ajayi’s goal haul is a major part of why the Magic sits seven points clear on top of the ladder. But it isn’t the only reason and although Ajayi is the leading marksman in the competition, he has scored fewer than one third of the Magic’s goals this season. Jon McShane has scored seven of their 29 and Ben Clarke has five to make it three of the top-five golden boot leaders coming from one club. But Tortevski was reluctant to heap too much praise on his strike force, saying it was

the collective efforts of all 11 that had led to the team’s average of 2.9 goals a game. “If I had to write about it, it would be about the whole team, because the boys are working hard together,” he said. “If the players work hard, they will give [the strikers] the opportunity to finish it off.” The Magic dismantled the Phoenix in the first 45 minutes and then put the cue in the rack. Steven Thomson was on the score sheet first for the Magic before Ajayi added the insurance goal. It was not the Magic at its ruthless best, but the players had an element of comfort not usually afforded in a derby game. “The players dropped their concentration a little bit at 2-0,” Tortevski said. “It’s always good when you win and keep a clean sheet – that’s the most important.” There was no extra motivation for the Magic other than to bank three points. Tortevski said it was more of a friendly rivalry with the Phoenix, who share the same venue. “It’s just another game, nothing special,” he

said. “We work together [with Phoenix] and help each other as much as we can [off the field]. “It’s a friendly rivalry and that’s nice to see.” The Magic, led by president Igor Georgieski, is pushing hard for inclusion in the NPL. There is no intention to take the foot off the pedal in their quest for state league 1 domination, which can, hopefully, aid their promotion bid. “Now we are starting to achieve what we want, I hope someone is going to give us the opportunity to go up to the next level,” Tortevski said. “The president and the committee are working and doing everything possible. “A lot of things have changed and this club really needs support from everyone and the right decisions from the FFV to get us to the higher league.” Meanwhile, Yarraville Glory put Western Suburbs to the sword in a 4-1 win at McIvor Reserve. Ashley Lymn fired in a double and Goran Jozeljic and Keith Dunne completed the rout. The Glory moved up to sixth on the ladder.

Williamstown’s ability to blow opposition teams away in the blink of an eye was on show in a 72-point pummelling of Footscray in a VFL western derby at Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls came out after the half-time break and piled on 13 goals to three to leave the Bulldogs shell-shocked. It was a victory the Seagulls so desperately wanted, with popular figures Ed Carr and Nick Meese playing their 100th VFL games. The result has kept the Seagulls in outright second, a game and percentage clear of third-placed Box Hill Hawks. It also keeps them within touching distance of ladder-leader Casey Scorpions, which is a game clear. Michael Gibbons put on a show in the midfield for Williamstown, further enhancing his credentials as a potential AFL draftee. Ben Jolley worked hard and was rewarded with two goals, while Dylan Conway had the most goals on the ground with three. It was a day Footscray would rather forget. Lukas Webb did his chances of a promotion no harm, Jed Adcock found plenty of the ball and Shaun Wyatt kicked two goals, but injuries to Nathan Hrovat, Nick Jamieson, Josh Wallis and Lauchlan Dalgleish rubbed salt into the wounds. Williamstown will be a short-priced favourite to beat lowly Frankston at Burbank Oval at 2pm on Saturday, while Footscray will need to bounce back against an equally desperate Geelong Cats in an early 11am Saturday game at Whitten Oval. MOTOR Grown-up RAV4 looks sharp By David Bonnici

Since it first appeared on our roads about 20 years ago, the RAV4 has been through a variety of incarnations that seemed to at first appeal to ’90s gym junkies before moving on to soccer mums. Toyota started getting the look right in 2013 and the 2016 facelift hits the spot, comparing well with its sharp looking competitors. I like its aggressive angular looks, particularly at the front – the white car I test drove kinda looked like a Star Wars stormtrooper. Gone are the compact short-wheel-base RAV4s of days past. This is quite a decent-sized car. At the top of the tree is the RAV4 Cruiser which at about $50,000 is on the pricey side yet is chock-full of safety features and gadgetry usually found in premium SUVs with extra digits in their prices. Inside, the RAV4 dashboard looks good but some of the switches are obscured by the steering wheel and a lip that runs along the dashboard. The Cruiser has a 6.1-inch multimedia touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard and a 4.2-inch trip computer display in the instrument panel that liven things up a bit. The trip computer is straight out of a Lexus, with heaps of information ranging from fuel economy to a sway warning that warns about fatigue if the car senses you driving slightly erratically. Other active safety features include radar cruise control, lane departure alert, auto

for kids. The back seat has the usual fold down armrest in the centre, complete with two cup holders. This is more than enough car for an average-sized family. The cargo area is quite big. The rear seats fold completely flat in a 60/40 split to provide a cargo floor space of 1.8 metres – enough for most of us to sleep outstretched. The Cruiser comes with A powered tailgate.

emergency braking, automatic high-beam and rear cross-traffic warning. Storage at the front of the roomy cabin is good and includes a decent centre console locker, space to put your phone and keys and a sunglass holder above the windscreen.

The power-adjusted, heated leather front seats are nice and firm with terrific back support. The back seats are very comfortable for two adults and offer plenty of leg and headroom. The middle seat would be tight for another adult but shouldn’t pose any issues

On the road This isn’t a small vehicle but the 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine pushes it along pretty well. It’s got an ECO mode for city driving and there’s a sports mode to be selected when you can sense this car chomping at the bit. Just touch the accelerator at the lights and you’re off. Fuel economy isn’t too bad for a 1.6-tonne vehicle – I averaged about 8.1 litres/100 kilometres. There is a turbo diesel version that will do a couple of litres less. Being all-wheel-drive, the car has a nice feel on the road and handles rough roads and fields nicely, too. Even in the rough stuff, it felt stable and comfortable – even at speed. The RAV4 Cruiser is a very safe car, with a suite of active safety features including radar cruise control and trip computer with a heap of different fuel consumption settings.
