Garden comes a cropper A Yarraville family is pushing for a change to Maribyrnong council guidelines after the council ordered it to tear down its nature strip vegetable garden. Rebecca Gray said a council officer recently knocked on her door to inform her the garden growing in three planter boxes on the broad nature strip in front of her Hughes Street home contravened council guidelines. “He said they had to go,” she said. “I said that is absolutely ridiculous; you can’t obviously think that growing grass there is a better use? He said you are not allowed to have solid structures or rocks.

“We have never had any complaints about it. People are always coming by and saying how much they love it.” Maribrynong and Hobsons Bay councils have no policy on vegetable gardens on nature strips, but neither allows plants higher than 50 centimetres. Maribyrnong’s Naturestrip Landscape Policy & Guidelines, adopted in 2007, limits the allowable plant types and states they “are to be pruned to a height of no more than 50cm at all times”. Residents wanting to make alterations are required to complete a nature strip landscape permit application form, but Ms Gray said the council officer said her garden would be

refused. “We used to have plants in the soil but changed it for two reasons – we weren’t sure what sort of contamination was in the ground and we thought it might make a tripping hazard,” she said. “It’s a very big piece of land, one of those wide nature strips. It has a lot of community support – pretty much all of our neighbours access it.” Ms Gray said the guidelines were outdated and ran counter to the council’s stated aim of “greening” the neighbourhood. “It’s so contradictory,” she said. “There are other councils where they have changed their guidelines to be a little more environmentally progressive.” Maribyrnong council director of planning

services Nigel Higgins said there were no plans to update the guidelines. “Residents are required to keep a nature strip free of any tripping hazards and any protruding objects,” he said. “The nature strip must also provide suitable space for the provision of refuse and recycling bins, and space for people entering and exiting cars … raised planter boxes would generally be considered an obstruction.” Mr Higgins said edible plants could be grown directly on the nature strip, provided they complied with the guidelines. Concerns about ground contamination could be met by importing topsoil or using non-edible plants, he added.

Couple stabbed, robbed after working late A St Albans restaurateur has been released from hospital after he and his wife were stabbed during an attempted armed robbery last Thursday. The couple were returning to their Maidstone home about 1.15am after working at their St Albans restaurant when they were ambushed in the driveway by a knife-wielding man. The victims’ son, Vinh Le, said his parents had the day’s takings with them. Mr Le said that when his mother stepped out of the car the attacker jumped from a hiding place in the bushes and stabbed her in the arm.

Mr Le said his father was stabbed five times in the chest and upper body after rushing to her aid. “They struggled for a bit,” he said. “The guy held my mum down so my dad tries to pull him out, but he didn’t let go so my dad managed to punch him once and he let go of my mum. My dad didn’t realise that he’d got stabbed five times.” Mr Le said the assailant stole his mother’s purse containing several thousand dollars of the restaurant’s takings. He said he was horrified by the attack.

“I’ve been living here 15 years,” he said. Mr Le’s 57-year-old father was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition. His 65-year-old mother went to the same hospital and was in a stable condition. Both were released from hospital at the weekend. Police are still searching for the couple’s attacker. Police minister takes leave, citing trauma

Constant exposure to details of “unspeakable crimes and traumatic events” has triggered a three-month leave of absence by Police and Corrections Minister and Williamstown MP Wade Noonan. Mr Noonan revealed on Monday that accumulated exposure through his role as police minister had taken an unexpected toll on his wellbeing. “I need time to receive further support and assistance, including professional counselling,” he said in a statement. “This has been a difficult decision, but I believe it is the right one.” Mr Noonan, 44, was elected to the safe seat of Williamstown in 2007 after the retirement of former premier Steve Bracks. He was installed by incoming Premier Daniel Andrews as Minister for Police and Corrections in 2014. Mr Noonan extended thanks to his wife and family for their “love and encouragement”. Sudanese man taunted By Benjamin Millar A Footscray man says he has been left shaken by a torrent of racial abuse that he experienced at a local hotel. Peter Mum, who was born in Sudan and came to Australia 12 years ago as a refugee, said he was at the hotel on January 28 to celebrate a friend’s birthday party. When he and another friend went into the courtyard of the hotel, which Star Weekly has elected not to name, a man from a group of four, who appeared to be aged in their 40s or 50s, began taunting him. “One guy said, ‘Why are you so black, why

are you so dark?’ I said, ‘Excuse me, that is not a question you can ask’, and then the four of them came closer and said things like, ‘You look very shiny’.” According to Mr Mum, his female friend began crying and one of the men began abusing her as well. “They said, ‘This is not an African hotel, this is an Australian hotel. You shouldn’t be here’. “I said, ‘I am an Australian as well’. I was really very upset and very distressed; a good time became a very bad time.” Mr Mum said a staff member came out and asked both groups to leave the hotel, at which point he called the police to report the abuse.

Fight club claim ‘a total beat-up’ By Esther Lauaki Altona traders are hitting back at a media report that claimed there is an organised fight club operating in the area. Video footage emerged of a brawl between several youths in front of up to 100 bystanders at RJ Logan Reserve, sparking rumours of the illegal fight club. The footage, purportedly filmed on January 25, appeared in a story on a television current affairs show last week. Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh called the report “a total beat-up”.

“People are up in arms about what a beat-up it was of Altona,” he said. “The fight was a number of weeks ago, not recently. “We’re able to pinpoint when it was because the street decorations from Christmas were still hanging. “We’re not very happy that our town is being painted as an unsafe place. We’re very disappointed that they’ve taken a one-off incident and said that it’s a regular fight club. “That’s not the Altona that we live in and that’s not the Altona we know.” Mr Walsh urged anyone who thinks a fight club exists in Altona to prove it. “We have a

very proactive summer policing unit, which is all part of a concerted effort to keep our town safe for families,” he said. Sergeant Dean Howard concurred that there was no fight club in Altona. “We’ve had no intelligence to say that there is an organised fight club in Altona; it was an isolated incident,” Sergeant Howard said. “We have identified some of the people in the video and criminal charges will be laid. “We have a small policing unit that conducts regular patrols of the area … and things are generally fine.” Restaurateur John Mattsson said he could

only recall two major fights at the beach in the nine years he’d owned Numero Uno Pizza on Pier Street. “I’d say in the past two years there’s been no real trouble,” he said “It’s not the locals either; it’s the people from out of town who come down here to the beach and get into fights. “One of the fights I remember in the past was between about 10 teenagers … and there was another from years ago when there were about 60 people fighting, but it hasn’t happened in a long time. We’ve had a pretty good summer down here,” Mr Mattsson said.

MPs divided over asylum seekers By Benjamin Millar Inner-west federal MPs remain in favour of offshore detention for asylum seekers despite thousands of protesters calling on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull not to send 267 asylum seekers to Nauru and Manus Island. Monday night’s nationwide ‘Let Them Stay’ rallies, backed by community advocacy group GetUp and Footscray’s Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, have failed to convince Maribyrnong MP and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten and Gellibrand MP Tim Watts that the group of asylum seekers in the country for medical treatment, including 37 babies born in Australia, should be allowed to stay. Mr Shorten said Labor supported regional processing as a way to stymie people smugglers. “There is nothing humane about people drowning at sea, and offshore regional processing is an important part of defeating the crime gangs,” he said. “But it’s also the case that it’s a long overdue time for compassion. It’s a disgrace that the processing times for these people has blown out to 445 days. “Australia does have a responsibility to ensure the safety of people in our care.” Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has broken ranks with his federal Labor colleagues, penning an open letter to Mr Turnbull offering to “accept full responsibility” for young asylum seekers facing “a life of physical and emotional trauma” if forcibly removed to offshore detention following last week’s High Court decision on the legality of offshore centres.

“It’s wrong,” Mr Andrews said. “Medical professionals tell us this. Humanitarian agencies tell us this. “Our values tell us this, too. Sending these children and their families to Nauru is not the Australian way.” Mr Watts said that while Australia had an obligation to do more to help address the global refugee crisis, he supported a “third country resettlement option” for asylum seekers arriving by boat.

“It doesn’t help the tens of millions of refugees suffering around the world for Australia to offer an incentive for people to undertake dangerous boat journeys to Australia,” he said. “Nor is it fair to determine the make-up of our humanitarian intake by advantaging people who are in a geographic or financial position to attempt to come to Australia by boat. “The reality is that the combination of offshore processing and regional resettlement, together with the policy of turning back boats, has stopped the flow of vessels arriving on our shores.” Asylum Seeker Resource Centre campaign co-ordinator Pamela Curr said the issue had reached a tipping point in the community.

MY PLACE Gail Lines, of Altona Yacht Club, is a woman on a mission to get people in the water and learning to sail. She is one of a handful of female yacht club commodores in Victoria, and she spoke to Esther Lauaki. What’s your connection to Hobson’s Bay? I lived in Altona for 11 years before moving out to Point Cook, but I still come regularly every week to help run the programs. How did you become involved in the Altona Yacht Club? When my partner and I bought our home on the Esplanade, he said he would learn to sail, being so close to the sea. So we bought an off-the-beach dinghy yacht, and we both took the course together. We were hooked from then on. I’ve been a member of the club for about 12 years now. How long have you been commodore and what does this role involve?

I have been commodore for 18 months and the role is similar to any role as president of a club. I’m a very proactive commodore, so that means that I chair meetings, organise all the programs and make sure that they are run well … keeping up on everything that’s going on in the club. What’s one of the most exciting things you’ve done in your time as commodore?

I was talking to a local Maori guy at the fish and chip shop down the road and he said that there was a waka ama (Pacific outrigger canoe) group of paddlers based close by, who had no place to store their boats, so they just have to leave them on the shore. What is it that you love the most about yachting? I used to sail for many years back in New Zealand where I’m from originally. I love the camaraderie and the sense of community that we have here at the club. It’s a way to get out and

blow the cobwebs away and take in the scenery.

What do you love about Altona?

Are there any upcoming events or programs at Altona Yacht Club?

Coming here was like coming to my home in Kawerau in New Zealand. I can’t walk down the street without talking to someone. It’s relaxed and small town and it’s like a little village. The people are friendly and Altona Yacht Club is a very inclusive club. We have people from all walks of life and all ages. Everyone is welcome to come and try sailing.

We have a new program we’re running called Tackers for children. It’s all about having fun and playing in the water, and learning to sail … it keeps kids off the computer, out of the house, and keeps us very busy on Saturday mornings.

Drive for a greater good Lovers of outdoor activities are encouraged to swing into action at a golf day at Hobsons Bay to raise money for more than 60 local groups. Hobsons Bay Community Fund is a philanthropic fund that is backed by, but independent, of the council. Chairman Hayden Raysmith says the golf day, on March 18 at Altona’s Kooringal Golf Club, will give people of all ages and skill levels the chance to enjoy a day on the green. “We are ready to build on the success of previous years’ fundraising and host our first golf day,” he said. “This is the 10th anniversary of the Hobson’s Bay Community Fund, and we wanted to mark the milestone.” Local businesses have sponsored each of the 18 holes on the course, and teams pay to enter.

Like roasting chickens, my history of cake decorating leaves a lot to be desired. It goes back to my high school days, when we were required to turn out a pretty, pastel-coloured masterpiece as part of our year 10 cake decorating class. I decided on the palest lemon shade for my icing. Unfortunately, the student standing next to me at our workbench accidentally knocked my elbow, sending half the bottle of yellow food colouring into my icing mixture, resulting in a radioactive-yellow cake that glowed in the dark. As far as my teacher was concerned, I’d missed the brief completely and was awarded a B-minus for that assignment. Unlike roasting chickens, though, my cake decorating ability seems to have improved over the years. A technique I’ve long wanted to try is brush embroidery. The outline of a flower is piped in royal icing, then a small paintbrush is used to flick part of the outline towards the centre of the flower, to achieve that ‘embroidered’ look. So I tried this technique when I made a pink and white cake for my mum’s 81st birthday, and I just have to show you the photos. Though the hibiscus-type flowers look a little heavy-handed, I’m thrilled with the result. Do you have a cake decorating triumph you’d like to share? Send me a photo of your cake. Speaking of icing cakes, I discovered a product this month that I love. Queen Buttercream Icing is a convenient, shortcut way of making buttercream icing without using any butter! Just add a splash of milk and some vanilla essence, mix for a minute, and you’ll have a batch of perfectly whipped, thick, creamy icing that’s ideal as a cake filling or to ice a batch of kids’ cupcakes in a hurry. You’ll find it in the baking aisle at the supermarket.

For millennia the relationship between man and his best friend has been unchanged – a largely uncomplicated affair built on loyalty, trust and tickles behind the ears. But now, just as it has invaded practically every corner of our lives, there’s a growing category of pet-related technology aiming to drag Fido (and Felix) into the 21st century. Much of the booming market in pet-tech belongs in the field of so-called “wearables”, many of which are GPS-enabled trackers to help you find your furry pal when it decides to go walkabout. The Petrek GPS Pet Tracker is mounted on the collar of your dog (or cat). It comes pre-loaded with a SIM card and claims to be able to find an errant pooch or moggie via a dedicated iPet app on your smartphone. For it to work, you have to remember to charge the device every couple of days and trust that, if your pet does go AWOL, he or she will remain in a spot with GPS coverage. TrakaPet is another RSPCA-branded GPS monitor. According to the sales spiel, it is suitable for “dogs, some cats, cattle, horses, ferrets, pet pigs, even an ibis”. Presumably the demand for ibis-tracking is at the more specialised end of the market. Fitbark is the doggie equivalent of the fitness band craze among humans. Mounted on the collar, it monitors the dog’s play and rest and then allocates BarkPoints (I’m not making this up) based on how active it is. So if your mutt doesn’t reach his or her optimal BarkPoint total during the day, you’d better get out for a walk together when you get home from work (which won’t do you any harm either). For those owners desperate to know what their pets get up to during the day, there is the

PetCube camera (petcube.com), which allows you to watch your dog and cat at home while you’re away via a smartphone app. It comes with a remote-controlled laser pointer, so you can play with your pet from across town or across the planet – which is every bit as weird as it sounds. Alternatively, if you happen to be one of those old-fashioned owners who prefers actually hanging out in real time with your pet,

there’s some fun to be derived from the GoPro Fetch, a harness that allows you to mount a video camera on your dog to get a pooch’s eye view of the world. It can be chest-mounted or fitted just behind the head for those joyfully flapping ear shots, and has spawned a whole genre of dog cam videos on YouTube. And lest this all becomes a little too canine-centric, let me introduce you to the

SPORT Eagles leave A’s no room for freeloaders Go all the way back to November 14 and you will find the dusty relic that is Yarraville’s last defeat in sub-district cricket. The Eagles have been in white-hot form ever since, undefeated in seven rounds with six wins and a wash-out. They have catapulted to third on the south-west group ladder and into premiership contention. Yarraville’s latest victim was local rival Altona in a one-day game they won comfortably by 25 runs, regaining the Jack Batty Shield, at Yarraville Oval on Saturday. The Eagles made an inauspicious start to be 3-20, but recovered to post a competitive 9-156 off 45 overs. The middle order came to the Eagles’ rescue. Josh Hahnel (50), Mali Pereira (32 not out) and Akshat Buch (27) starred. It needed a disciplined bowling performance from Yarraville to keep the A’s below the 3.48

run rate required. The Eagles did a stellar job with James Keenan (3-31), Matthew Love (3-17), Nathan Allen (2-41), Jack Noble (1-14) and Buch (1-10) rolling the visitors for 131 in 41.1 overs. The fearless Eagles will travel to Moorabbin for a two-day game at Moorleigh Community Village Oval on Saturday. With the exception of skipper Shane Jones (4-39, two catches and 27), Andrew McCammond (2-10 and 20) and James Grubb (40), Altona had too many passengers and needs a wider contribution when it hosts Williamstown. Clubbers’ crunch time By Lance Jenkinson Past players days are always big occasions for cricket clubs. Yarraville Club held its annual get-together on Saturday, with former champions from more than three decades waxing lyrical about the achievements of bygone eras. Clubbers coach Michael O’Keefe said “old legends” were packing the rooms. “No doubt by 10pm everyone will be superstar cricketers,” he quipped. There is a growing feeling that the current crop of Clubbers players could be on the verge of creating more legendary exploits of their own. The Clubbers have already achieved great feats by winning back-to-back VTCA senior division flags so a rare three-peat is the carrot dangling before them this summer. O’Keefe knows what it’s like to go on a premiership run, having been part of the Clubbers’ four in a row from 2008-09 to 2011-12.

He is starting to get the sense that his side is not ready to pass the premiership baton to another club just yet. “You can tell we’re ready to take it to another level,” O’Keefe said. “The boys are pretty hungry from here on end.” But the Clubbers still have work to do. As things stand, they are not guaranteed to reach the finals, let alone win this season’s premiership. The defending champions are sitting in fourth place but are only 1.31 points off top spot. But at the same time, they are just five points clear of fifth-placed Tullamarine, with which they are locked in battle in the current round. It could be a case of win-and-you’re-in for the Clubbers, who made 7-310 on day one against Tullamarine at the Walker Oval on Saturday. Whatever the outcome, this Saturday’s play will be critical to the finals chances of both sides. “This game is day one of our finals series,” O’Keefe said.

On a hot day with the conditions providing little assistance to the bowlers, Yarraville Club lost the toss and was shocked to be sent in to bat. Tullamarine’s disciplined bowling made it hard for the Clubbers. But in such favourable batting conditions, a score of more than 300 was always on the cards. There were plenty of contributors for the Clubbers with the bat. Konrad Kurta was magnificent in the top order with 78, while late runs to Clint Hillas (47), Adam Contessa (47 not out) and Ben Tupper (43no) were vital. Anthony Cristofaro, the club captain banished to the seconds a game earlier for inconsistent form, returned with a vengeance to make 39, a week after venting his frustration with a whopping 183 in the seconds. “He showed character – it could be a real stepping stone for him for the rest of the season,” O’Keefe said Tullamarine will begin its run chase on Saturday.

■ I’m hearing disturbing stories about the recruitment of under-age players by football clubs. I’m told it’s becoming more prevalent, especially by strong financial clubs with poor under-age local talent at their disposal. I understand it is better for kids to be playing than not playing. But the problem is that only the top players are being targeted, so it’s not about participation, it’s about winning. Money and other inducements are involved and while this isn’t against the rules, I believe it is morally wrong.

Wolves turn the tables By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown Wolves have wearied of the pain caused by the Fitzroy Lions in Baseball Victoria division 2 this season. After two heavy defeats to their bogey team, the Wolves said enough was enough, winning a thriller 7-6 at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday. The Wolves, including player-coach Kile Rogers, were not playing down how sweet it was to get one back on the Lions at their third attempt. “It’s definitely good to finally get a win against Fitzroy,” he said. “I’m certainly not going to take anything away from Fitzroy, they’ve outplayed us in the first two times that we played them. “It was 16-3 the first time we played them and 11-1 the second … so they’ve been a well-drilled team all year. “Today we did all the right things. We managed to keep their bats in check for most of the game, which was the key.” Wolves starting pitcher Jason Lester put the clamps on the Lions’ batters. It was not until a late Lions surge, with the visitors levelling the scores at the top of the ninth, that the Wolves experienced a level of discomfort. But by then, Lester had checked out of the game. The pitcher has found his top form at the right time of the season. With the Wolves sitting in fourth and facing a battle to reach the finals with three teams breathing down their necks, they needed Lester to step up. “He got ahead early in the counts by throwing a lot of first-pitch strikes, which is a key for any pitcher at any level,” Rogers said.
