Williamstown’s Greg Miles, who has called more Melbourne Cup races than anyone, has been recognised in Australia Day honours with an OAM for service to horse racing as a broadcaster. Last November, Mr Miles called his 35th Melbourne Cup as Australians witnessed history being made. Michelle Payne guided Prince of Penzance to victory, becoming the first female jockey in 155 years to win the classic. Just a month earlier, Mr Miles’ confidence was at “an all-time low” after experiencing a mid-race panic attack in the broadcast box during the Caulfield Cup, calling the winner

Magnolia Khan instead of Mongolian Khan. “I was pretty crook with severe hay fever, which I couldn’t shake,” he said. “I got some medical assistance to clear it up, but the side effects of that were shortness of breath then anxiety. Under the pressure leading up to the Caulfield Cup, I just had a very, very bad moment, probably the worst moment I’ve had in the broadcast box, to be honest. “It was scary: I didn’t quite know what was going on and it all unravelled during the running of the Caulfield Cup.” Mr Miles said the Australia Day honour came as a shock but left him “pretty chuffed”. “I accept it on behalf of all the other race callers, rather than just Greg Miles. I think it’s great that the game’s been recognised.”

School options: build or squeeze By Benjamin Millar More than 300 extra classrooms may be needed in the inner west within a decade because of growth pressures caused by a baby boom and the popularity of the area among families. Data compiled by the Grattan Institute reveals heavy pressure on schools to absorb the predicted 180,000 rise in students across Victoria by 2026. A 56 per cent rise in student numbers across that time is predicted in Maribyrnong – rising to 62 per cent at secondary school level.

The modelling shows Maribyrnong may need to accommodate 5874 extra students in 235 new classrooms. Hobsons Bay can expect an extra 1948 students, or 78 classrooms, due to a 15 per cent increase in demand. Grattan Institute school education program director Dr Peter Goss said existing schools could only absorb some of the growth, and a number of new schools would be needed to meet the explosion in demand. “There is a balancing act in building schools at the right time and ensuring existing schools

are not effected or harmed,” he said. “But those new schools need to be available as required.” Dr Goss said the wave of extra students now passing through primary schools in Maribyrnong would begin hitting secondary schools from next year. “There are always pressures to minimise investment and there have been cases where the data used has been out of date,” he said. “New classrooms or schools should not be a political plaything. Where local groups are armed with more good data, it leads the way to more fact-based planning.”

Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland said that because planning for schools was hidden from the public, marginal seats were often prioritised over areas most in need. “Communities should not have to continually lobby for government schools where they are needed, nor be held captive to marginal seat priorities,” she said. “Planning and funding for schools must be based on need, not politics. We need a more transparent and fair system in Victoria.” Neither the Education Minister nor the education department responded by deadline.

An African-Australian filmmaker who accused police of victimising him has failed to prove his claims. Representing himself at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Hamadou Djime made 27 allegations of discrimination, sexual harassment, victimisation, racial vilification and human rights breaches against individual police and Victoria Police as a whole. The accusations include alleged sexual harassment by police at Footscray railway station and being dropped from a police van “in the middle of nowhere”. Mr Djime alleged two female senior constables followed him at Footscray station in May 2013 and flirted with him, before telling him he had not tapped his myki. He alleged he was assaulted and molested before being left between Footscray and North Melbourne stations. Mr Djime also claimed he was assaulted by police during a later incident at his Sunshine rental property, claiming he was handcuffed and beaten by a sergeant. VCAT member Anna Dea dismissed 21 of the 27 allegations last July and, in a ruling handed down on December 23, found the remaining six to be unproven. Ms Dea found evidence that Mr Djime had been left outside North Melbourne police station – after being removed from Footscray railway station to defuse a volatile situation – to be compelling. She also found the police report to be more reliable regarding Mr Djime’s ejection from his rental Sunshine premises during a dispute with his landlord’s brother. “It is more probable … [the] sergeant asked Mr Djime to leave because of his behaviour,” Ms Dea said.

Third attempt at high-rise plan By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans have been lodged for the biggest residential and retail development in Spotswood’s history. Consulting firm Urbis has lodged an application with Hobsons Bay council for a 10-storey neighbourhood activity centre on the corner of Melbourne Road and McLister Street. The plan includes 350 dwellings, a Woolworths supermarket, Dan Murphy’s liquor store, specialty shops, a medical centre and cafe.

Plans show 764 car parks, 368 of which are for dwellings. It’s the third time plans for the site have been lodged with the council. In 2010, the council approved 90 dwellings for the site. A subsequent plan for an increase in dwellings to 240 was rejected by the council, and went to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. VCAT agreed to 211 dwellings. Now, the applicant has come back with plans for 350 dwellings.

Developer Sam Suleman said research had shown a need for more dwellings. “We’ve had the site now for almost 20 years and we’ve always been talking to council about what’s the best use for it. This is obviously the best use for the site,” he said. “We’ve had to put an amendment to the existing

planning permit that we’ve got, mainly due to a requirement by our major tenant, being Woolworths, requesting some changes to the design. We’ve accommodated them. “At the same time, given our research within the area about the level of interest for apartments, we’ve gone in for more apartments with a better design.” The development is 10 storeys at its highest point, while most of it is five to six storeys. The council has requested more information from the applicant, which it has until April 13 to provide.

Dragons with friendly fire Footscray’s biggest street festival returns on Sunday in celebration of the Lunar New Year. The East Meets West Lunar New Year Festival will bring the sights, sounds and smells of Vietnamese culture to the heart of Footscray in a day-long feast for the senses. Thousands of people are expected to turn out at Hopkins Street to welcome in the Year of the Monkey with a festival parade, cultural dances, musical performances, food stalls and carnival rides. Co-ordinator Hai Pham says the festival has grown from humble beginnings more than two decades ago to be a bridge between the Vietnamese people and other communities. “Over eight years, the festival has been transformed into a truly multicultural event showcasing the cultural diversity and cohesiveness of Footscray, a place where East really meets West,” he said. A flag-flying performance will open the

festival and there will be lion-dancing, firecrackers going off and live music throughout the day, including from traditional Vietnamese bamboo music band Tre Vang. Food stalls will take over the streets and there will be games and rides for all ages followed by a fireworks display to end the festivities. “We’re delighted to have the support of many traders, including Footscray Market which will provide free parking for the day and fireworks for the finale,” Mr Pham said. Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the festival was a signature event on the Festival City program. “The streets of Footscray will come alive with dancing and celebration in an event not to be missed,” he said. Meth man’s house hopes sink By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows man jailed for importing more than 200 kilograms of methamphetamine has lost a bid to stop police from confiscating his house. Dock worker Patrick Cini and his son Rhys were arrested in 2013 after police found 205 kilograms of methamphetamine in truck tyres on a ship docked at the Port of Brisbane. The truck had been imported by Patrick Cini’s company.

Police removed the packages and replaced them with dummy packages and let the ship continue to Melbourne. The Cinis collected the truck and drove it to a Brooklyn factory. They then transported the packages in plastic tubs to Patrick Cini’s Ayr Street house in Altona Meadows where they were kept until all but six packages were distributed to other locations. The pair were sentenced in August 2014. Rhys Cini, of Point Cook, was sentenced to

10 years’ jail with a non-parole period of six years. The sentence of Patrick Cini has not been published. In his recent bid to keep his house, Patrick Cini told the County Court that he married in 1977 and with his wife bought the Ayr Street house. They later divorced and, as part of a settlement, Cini paid $100,000 borrowed from the ANZ Bank in 2006 to his former wife in exchange for her interest in the property. By 2010, Cini had paid back the bank loan.

The court heard this evidence was unchallenged, proving that Cini’s property had been lawfully acquired. County Court Judge Frances Millane told the court that the use of the Ayr Street property to store the drugs was “fatal” with respect to trying to stop the property being seized. “On this evidence alone, the applicant [Patrick Cini] had not established the Ayr Street property was not used in, or in connection with, this unlawful activity,” she said.

From little things, big things grow. Altona Community Garden members are now growing fish using aquaponics in their front and back yards. Peter Weaver has a partially buried 1000-litre water tank full of fish, topped with a 250-litre grow-bed for vegetables. “All the vegetables are fantastic, but there’s no protein,” he said. “So, the next stop was fish.” He’s using goldfish to get the aquaponics system started. Their body waste gives off ammonia, which bacteria converts to nitrites, and then nitrates. The plants above absorb the nitrates and grow twice as fast while also acting as a filter to keep the fish tank clean. The goldfish will be replaced with baby silver perch. When they grow to a decent size, Mr Weaver plans to throw about 50 on the barbecue and have a harvest party.

The group is hoping to work with Hobsons Bay council to develop a communal garden space. Mr Weaver said the space could include a 10,000-litre aquaponics set-up. “We could do yabbies, barramundi, perch, trout, and have three or four harvest parties a year where we harvest the fish, harvest our vegetables, and have a big barbecue on a day for the members or the public. “Imagine if, in five years, a little suburb like Altona could produce 50 per cent of its food or 30 per cent of its food locally. I think this is the way of the future.” Altona Community Garden will host a garden tour at five homes on January 31 and an aquaponics tour on February 28. A call is going out for volunteers to become involved in a web series portraying the lives of young people of diverse sexuality and gender in Melbourne’s west. The WestandProud project aims to honestly portray gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer young people, their families and friends. Filmmaker Caitlin Bryan said the aim was to raise the visibility of young GLBTIQ people. “I guess I had a personal connection growing up realising I was gay,” she said. “I think the importance of representation, having GLBTIQ visibility in the media but also telling local stories as well, is really important. “We’re making a new web series, a fictional series, but it will be based on real experiences of people living in the west and will be written

and produced by volunteers and people living in the western suburbs. “I’ll be encouraging young people like aspiring filmmakers, graphic designers and producers to sign up, but it’s open to anyone who wants to get involved. “All I’ll be seeking are people who are passionate and happy to do some work, get involved, do some writing, brainstorming, telling their own stories and collecting stories.” Expressions of interest are being sought from young people who want to share their stories, and from industry professionals and mentors to be involved in production. Former international student and Seddon resident Gary Lee has been named the Australia Day Council’s new Australian of the year. Head of the selection panel, Wesa Chau, said Mr Lee had been the glue bringing together communities that did not traditionally meet, such as refugees and international students. Ice lab busted, man charged

A 47-year-old Maribyrnong man has been charged with trafficking a large, commercial quantity of methyl amphetamine following police raids on properties in Melbourne’s north and west. Detectives from the clandestine laboratory squad charged four men and a woman after seizing drugs, drug manufacturing equipment and a number of firearms in Thomastown, Noble Park and Maribyrnong on Thursday morning.

Centre ‘used force 1000 times’ By Benjamin Millar Almost 1000 “use of force” incidents were recorded at Maribyrnong immigration detention centre in the 12 months to July last year. Data shows guards at Maribyrnong used force or restrained and handcuffed asylum-seekers and detainees on 958 occasions – almost double the next-highest rate for detention centres in Australia. Figures obtained under freedom of information laws show the next highest rates were 523 at Sydney’s Villawood centre and 350 at Western Australia’s Yongah Hill. Recorded incidents at Maribyrnong

included the restraint of a female detainee who tried to disrupt a search of her rooms, and force used to stop detainees injuring each other and causing damage. A Department of Immigration and Border Protection spokesman said some detention centres housed more detainees with violent and criminal histories, which “may result in local variations in the level of force required to maintain order”. It may be required, he said, when moving risky detainees to use arm-lock holds or restraints such as handcuffs. Maribyrnong is run on behalf of the federal government by private security firm Serco. It houses non-citizens due for deportation

because of criminal convictions as well as asylum-seekers. Figures released to a Senate inquiry in July revealed that on April 30 there were 448 people in Australian immigration detention centres who had been convicted of criminal offences. Four had been convicted of homicide or related offences, 70 of sexual assault and 165 of assault or other violent offences. Refugee advocates are concerned that vulnerable people are often forced to share rooms with convicted criminals. Asylum Seeker Resource Centre detention rights advocate Pamela Curr told Fairfax Media she knew of one young female asylum-seeker who had been sent from

Maribyrnong to hospital for an operation and had been handcuffed to her hospital bed for two days. Star Weekly reported last February that two guards at Maribyrnong were sacked after a string of attacks on detainees. Claims arose that physical assaults increased when Serco transferred ex-corrections managers from the prison system into the detention centre. Footscray police were also called to a number of assaults and incidents at the Maribyrnong centre in March and April as gangs of criminals awaiting deportation set upon and threatened to kill refugees. – with The Age

Dive in for birthday splash Victoria’s largest community-based learn-toswim program has celebrated its 40th birthday in Maribyrnong. Sports Minister John Eren and Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald were among special guests at an anniversary gathering at Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre on Thursday. Almost 200 local kids are enrolled in Aquatics and Recreation Victoria’s VICSWIM program, which has taught swimming and water safety skills to almost 700,000 Victorian children since 1976. This year, VICSWIM enrolments are approaching 10,000 for the first time in many years, with children learning from 450 swim teachers at more than 125 venues across Victoria.

Aquatic and Recreation Victoria chief executive Anthony McIntosh said many lives had been saved and improved because of VICSWIM’s swimming lessons for kids during school holidays. “Many of us in the industry had our first swimming lessons with VICSWIM,” Mr McIntosh said. Benjamin Millar

Kon stands for justice, equality

Long-time Altona resident Nancy Winder has volunteered for “every darned thing in Altona”. The 81-year-old, who could be described as Altona’s ultimate volunteer, was named Hobsons Bay’s citizen of the year on Australia Day. Altona Meadows’ William McKenzie, a 16-year-old Bayside P-12 College student, was named Hobsons Bay young citizen of the year. Mayor Peter Hemphill said what set the two winners apart was their direct and ongoing engagement with the local community and dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. “Nancy has lived in Altona for more than 60 years and volunteered with a number of organisations, including local schools, the Salvation Army and Altona Lions,” he said. “She’s always volunteering and has always made herself available to those in our community who need a kind ear to listen to their problems. She’s always made herself available no matter who they are.” Ms Winder, who also volunteers with Probus and Caritas and has helped out on a soup van for the homeless, said being named citizen of the year was the “shock of her life”. “I haven’t done all this by myself,” she said. “I’ve had help from friends, and the ladies’ Lions have been wonderful. And if I have any problems I just ask one of the men to help me. “I think I’ve volunteered for every darned thing in Altona. It’s been a busy life.” Through the Lions, she provides mobility aids for the elderly and has collected hundreds of spectacles and other items to be sent to Third World countries. “No matter what you do for Lions, it’s for a good cause, it really is,” she said.

Asylum Seeker Resource Centre founder Kon Karapanagiotidis is Maribyrnong’s citizen of the year. He was among 10 people recognised in Tuesday’s Maribyrnong Civic Awards. Mayor Cameron McDonald said Mr Karapanagiotidis was recognised for his generosity of spirit and passion for advocacy after more than 20 years working at grassroots level with marginalised communities. “Inspired by the struggles of his parents and his own experiences with racism, Kon has been driven by a desire for justice and equality,” Cr McDonald said. “Locally, he leads a team of about 1400 staff and volunteers at the ASRC.” John Lord was named volunteer of the year for his involvement in football and cricket in the west for more than 60 years. The mayoral award went to the Friends of Newells Paddock group, which cares for the nature reserve. Ray O’Hara, who began playing for Kingsville Football Club in the 1960s and served the club through two incarnations as the Yarraville Football Club and Yarraville Seddon Eagles Football Club, received the ‘active Maribyrnong sporting award’. The Idea Collective, a co-working space for desk-based creatives, received the ‘enterprise Maribyrnong award for innovative business’. Thieves who stole Imperial brass weights and measures from the Altona Homestead Museum, presumably to sell as scrap metal, have been described as â€œscumbagsâ€?. The six weights, dating back to the early 1900s, are believed to have been stolen last month, but their disappearance was only noticed last Wednesday. Management of the homestead, which was built in 1842, was forced to review security before thousands of people went through

its museum doors on Australia Day. Altona Laverton Historical Society president Peter Weaver said he was gutted by the theft. â€œI got involved with the homestead about six years ago,â€? he said. â€œWe opened it up a lot to give further access to people, so they can touch and see things a little closer. â€œAnd weâ€™ve got free entrance. â€œIâ€™m proud to say, this is the first time weâ€™ve had something go missing, that we know of, but itâ€™s still gut-wrenching and it feels like an invasion of some kind.â€?

The largest weight stolen was about 20 centimetres wide. Mr Weaver described the thieves as â€œscumbagsâ€?. â€œTheyâ€™re just the lowest of low,â€? he said. Previously, a man tried to steal an eight-inch thick family bible from the homestead, but Mr Weaver caught him in the act and stopped him. Local scrap metal recyclers have been notified of the latest theft. The museumâ€™s curators are appealing to the thief to return the weights by leaving them on the porch of the homestead at Logan Reserve.

Pressure on foster care A foster care program needs people in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay to open their homes to foster children and teenagers. The program, which runs out of UnitingCareâ€™s Werribee Support and Housing, faces funding cuts if the organisation canâ€™t reach its target of finding homes for 19 children each year. â€œIf we have cuts in funding, it will really have an impact on the kids who need new homes,â€? program co-ordinator Tania Napoli said. Ms Napoli and her team are calling for potential carers to help change lives. â€œCarers can be from all walks of life,â€? she said. â€œSingle, married, people with a family of their own, same-sex couples, full-time workers, part-time workers, or even those retired. A lot of carers often say that knowing they can provide a safe place to live for somebody in need is really rewarding.â€?

Ms Napoli said there were many ways of fostering young people, short or long-term. â€œBecoming a foster carer provides children with an opportunity to have some stability to be cared for, or to have a safe haven. It gives them an opportunity to be removed from hostile situations of abuse or neglect, and gives them a second chance,â€? she said. MY PLACE Altona Meadows’ William McKenzie was named Hobsons Bay’s young citizen of the year on Australia Day. The 16-year-old has also won the Hobsons Bay inspirational young persons award twice. He talks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection with Hobsons Bay?

How did you feel when you were named Hobsons Bay young citizen of the year?

I’ve lived here my whole life. I go to school at Bayside P-12 College. I’ve got a job at Lavo Central – I work at the fish ’n’ chip shop and KFC. I’ve got two jobs, for the holidays anyway.

First of all when I received the letter I was thinking, oh, this might be one of the ones saying thank you for submitting an entry. Then when I read it, I was pretty shocked at it, to be honest, because I don’t find anything I do anything to be awarded for. It’s just me being me.

I’ve been pretty active within the community over the last couple of years. I was a participant of the 2014 Western Bulldogs Whitten Project and received the ‘you inspire me’ award in that program. I’ve been a member of the Future Leaders Unite (FLU) and Youth Parliament. The Road to Smile campaign is something I thoroughly enjoyed advocating for. It was an initiative made up by FLU to battle teen depression or anxiety, you could say. It was an Instagram account where people could post their pictures saying #roadtosmile and there could be a picture of what makes them smile. It could be a caption of what makes them smile. The aim was to spread smiles around. When you see someone smile you instantly want to smile as well. I’ve received the Hobsons Bay inspirational young persons award twice, which I’ve been pretty lucky for.

What do you like about Altona Meadows? Could I do all the Altona instead – that’s all of the Altonas? Just pretty much how friendly everyone is, the location of everything – it’s easy to get to. I used to play footy for Williamstown and Altona. Is there anything you would change about the area? Not really. What’s your favourite cafe or place to eat? I’m going to say either Numero Uno or Stella’s. I’ve just been there for good occasions, friends’ birthdays and that, and they always serve nice food. What inspires you? To be the change I want to see in this world.

One-off concert no longer a pipe dream A Seddon musician is relishing a rare chance to perform in concert with one of the world’s largest pipe organs. Australian Art Orchestra artistic director Peter Knight said the AAO will be joined by Sydney collective Ensemble Offspring next month to present Exit Ceremonies, a concert built around performances on Melbourne Town Hall’s ornate grand organ. The musicians will unite with American experimental music giant Alvin Lucier and composer-pianists Austin Buckett (Australia) and Simon James Phillips (Germany) to explore the extraordinary array of sonic effects only achievable with large pipe organs. ““Exit Ceremonies creates new rituals for the organ, and explores the meeting points of classical, jazz and experimental music,” Knight said. “It also aims to be accessible and to draw the audience into a totally immersive, sensual experience.” Exit Ceremonies will also use reel-to-reel tape machines, turntables, electronics, percussion, vocals, trumpet and strings in combination with the town hall’s grand organ – one of the world’s largest such instruments, which uses 90,000 cubic feet of air every minute. Lucier’s commission for AAO, called Swings, will have its world premiere at the concert. Buckett’s Aisles is a new work, which draws on diverse inspirations from minimalism to hip hop. Aisles sets up looped conversations between the pipe organ, turntables, percussion, strings, voice and Knight’s trumpet. Working with subtle timbres and structures to build a complex composition, Phillips’ Flaw

They claim the review, launched by Conservation, Forests and Lands Minister Joan Kirner, could see an increase in the number of boats fishing in the bay. At present, the scallop fleet is restricted to 85 boats – and that’s enough say local fishermen.

Vietnam veterans from Melbourne’s west are reaching out to the friends and family of three soldiers, inviting them to attend a graveside vigil next month commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. Services will be conducted for Trevor Graham Petith, John Carruthers and Robert James Gillard, who are interred at Altona cemetery and whose family members may still live in Wyndham, Hobsons Bay or Maribyrnong, according to the RSL. Melbourne West RSL sub-branch secretary Ray Matthews said the three soldiers had died over the course of the Vietnam War, or from wounds inflicted during the war, and the services would be a way to remember them. He said the services were part of simultaneous graveside commemorative services being

held at 35 Victorian cemeteries. Mr Matthews said the service would not be exclusively for family members. Sub-branch president Charles Peterson said it would give Vietnam veterans an opportunity to commemorate their comrades. “We wanted to visit all of the gravesites across the state where our mates are buried, to honour their service and sacrifice, and show that they are not forgotten,” he said. “Most of them died very young; they never had the chance to marry, to have a family, to enjoy their grandchildren and grow old, as we have.” The services will be at noon on February 21 at Altona cemetery. Pizza pleasures

It’s a tie between Pizza d’Asporto (Williamstown) and Ovest (West Footscray). Of course, both these great places do a lot more than pizza – and both in their own inimitable style.

Best non-westie meal

Moroccan Deli-cacy (Brunswick East) serves incredibly delicious vegetarian food, made with love and served with a smile. Just a “spoken menu” of a single mixed plate of amazing for $15.

Bit by bit, the availability of good Middle Eastern food in the western suburbs improves. We love A1 Bakery at Essendon and House of Beans at Altona.

The pies have it

Ka Pies in Sunshine turn out perfect, affordable pastry-encased wonders that are a staple. Our favourites are the smoked fish, lamb roast, beef rendang, haka and pork-and-watercress.

Burger madness

The west has not been spared the burger mania that has hit the rest of Melbourne. St Burgs in Edgewater impresses as the new guy on the block, but we still dig Zigzag at the showgrounds and 8bit at Footscray.

Fab Somalian

Joining the west’s robust African riches this year were Somalian eateries New Somali Kitchen at Flemington and Ya Salam Cafe and Restaurant at Tarneit. Love that rice!

Bangladesh in Footscray

Rizq Bangladeshi Cuisine brings a lovely touch of Bangladesh to the west, offering a great alternative to our many Indian restaurants.

All the goodies at Sourdough Kitchen in Seddon and Impasto Forno Antico in Avondale Heights are excellent, especially the former’s fruity scrolls and ciabatta rolls from the latter.

MJ: I make a reasonable spaghetti bolognese and I can whip up an edible stir fry on occasion. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? MJ: An entrée serve of tandoori chicken followed by a main serving of lamb vindaloo or chicken tikka masala served with basmati rice or naan bread, and then mango ice cream to top it all off for dessert. FB: What is your favourite food TV show and who is your favourite TV food person? MJ: I’m not a big TV food show watcher but I find Gordon Ramsay’s unique take on cooking entertaining. FB: What is your favourite food? MJ: I love Indian food. It’s simply the best in the world.

When it comes to cooking, we all have our strengths and weaknesses. I can poach an egg like a champion. Whip up a soufflé? No problem. But do you think I can roast a chook? Chicken pieces, no worries. But for whatever reason, when it comes to cooking a whole bird, I am absolutely hopeless. Just ask my husband. I decided to roast a beautiful, marinated, butterflied whole chicken for Christmas lunch. I carefully checked the weight of the bird and the recommended cooking time, let it rest … basically I did everything I was supposed to do. Yet when we sliced into the meat, it was pink and raw inside. No matter how many times I try, this always happens to me! My mum thinks it’s hysterically funny that I write a food column yet I can’t master the art of roasting a chook. I feel embarrassed to ask, but what in the world am I doing wrong? If any readers have some advice on this one, I’ll gladly take it on board.

JUST ADD APPLE

While roast chicken may not be my forte, I can do a killer coleslaw. It’s the perfect side dish during the summer months. This one is perfect to take along to a barbie. Adding sliced apple gives it added sweetness and crunch, and using purple cabbage instead of green makes it so colourful. Finely slice a small half-head of purple cabbage and mix it with one large grated carrot, two to three sticks of finely sliced celery and a finely sliced red apple. For the dressing, mix together half a cup of mayonnaise (the cheaper variety is fine – just make sure it’s full fat!), a quarter of a cup of mustard (I use a mix of seeded mustard and Dijon mustard), a quarter of a cup of apple cider vinegar and a quarter of a cup of caster sugar. Season with salt and pepper, whisk together. Add to cabbage mixture and toss. This is perfect with pork or chicken schnitzel. Welcome back to Food Bytes for 2016. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds yet another dumpling paradise in Footscray After five years and more than 1000 posts, it might be presumed that Consider The Sauce has explored every noodle nook and curry cranny in Footscray Central. Hasn’t happened. Not even close. For example: Dumplings & More is by now a Hopkins Street veteran, yet it’s only very recently that we have ventured through its doorway to eat and enjoy. And enjoy we did. Woks are used here but this is food – from the north-eastern province of Liaoning – that is quite a long way removed from your regular Cantonese tucker. There’s ample scope in the menu to accept all sorts of challenges, although quite a few of the dishes involve Chinese pickles of the sort I already know through experience are not really my “thing”. This place is about hardcore Asian dining – the service is fine and smiling but there is not much English spoken here, so pointing at the required dishes is the go. Ambience is bare-bones, cheap eats cafe style. And the prices at Dumplings & More are very low. Cucumber salad ($7) is a beaut and refreshing starter. It’s a little sweet, vinegary, a little spicy, garlicky and delicious. Spicy chicken with peanuts ($13.80) is another winner, although I’m keener about it than my offsider.

DUMPLINGS & MORE Address: 96 Hopkins Street, Footscray Phone: 9689 2165 I love the way all the ingredients are chopped to uniform size and that those ingredients include celery and cucumber. An order of the pan-fried lamb dumplings ($9.80 for 15 pieces) is very good, with the casings being alternatively crisp and a little doughy and the innards juicy and well seasoned. The crowning glory of our visit is the potato, eggplant and chilli ($13.80). Seriously, Bennie has been talking about this dish regularly since we devoured it. It is very, very oily – but that goes with such a dish and its method of preparation. The potato segments are browned yet still quite firm. They’re just like roast spuds – and unlike anything potato we’ve ever before had in any kind of Asian restaurant. Brilliant! The eggplant is wondrously silky and luscious and packed with aubergine flavour. This is all the more impressive as all of it is skin-free – yet it is the skin with which we normally associate high degrees of flavour in eggplant cooking. The Bulldogs expected to grind over the three rounds that remain and never thought the route one approach was possible. They took a ride in the fast lane last Saturday, though,

wrapping up 10 points in an outright win over a disappointing Frankston Peninsula, away at the AH Butler Oval. The win allowed the Bulldogs to square their season ledger at 7-7 and return to the finals mix. The Bulldogs have not only picked up the 10 priceless points; they’ve been given a significant confidence booster to take into their clash against St Kilda at Merv Hughes Oval, starting on Saturday. After chasing 81 for first innings points last week, the Dogs went on the attack early,

putting on 5-182 before declaring with a lead of 102. Led by four wickets to young gun Guy Walker, the Bulldogs removed the Heat for 185, giving the home side a lead of 83. The Bulldogs chased down the target in 15.1 overs for the loss of just one wicket. Travis Dean, who made a blistering 93 in the first innings, blasted 59 off 39 balls, while English import Dan Hodgson played a supporting role with 28 off 46 to guide the Dogs to victory. IN THE DOGHOUSE Artie Bugg was a Werribee icon, particularly when it came to Werribee Park Golf Club. Artie passed away on January 16, aged 95. And, fittingly, his hearse drove down the club‘s 18th fairway before a memorial service in his beloved clubhouse. Artie was a member at Werribee Park for more than 40 years, going back to the day when the course was at Werribee racetrack, and was one of those involved in relocating the club to K Road. Strangely, Artie never served on the committee but he was the unofficial course supervisor. I can remember him walking from the 18th tee to the third tee one day to see if my group all had sand buckets and were dressed correctly. That was the first time I’d ever met him but, like everyone else, I knew who he was. Artie was quirky, no-one would deny that. But he wasn’t as quirky as one of his death notices in the Herald Sun, although I think Artie would have been amused at being referred to as a woman.

cricket is always throwing up new records but this one may take some beating. John Verdino broke Footscray ANA Cricket Club’s long-standing record for most wickets when he claimed his 855th for the club on January 16. The late Norm Stewart, who played between 1950 and 1964, held the old record. John started at Footscray ANA as an under-16 player in the 1979-80 season and has played 341 games. His milestone was cheered on from the sidelines by other club stalwarts, Neville Jolley (318 games), Graeme Hodgart (228), Dale Lamers (142), and Mal Hodgart (105). On the field John had veterans Spiros Kiziaris (364 games) and Mick Kukucka (262) to share his special moment. Let me know if anyone at your club has achieved anything similar.

Bowler picks up pace By Lance Jenkinson Footscray Edgewater opening bowler Hamish Winter-Irving has transformed his summer. The Bulldogs paceman has been in stellar form since the start of December, with 15 wickets in his past four games. When interstate recruit Jake Haberfield returned to Tea Tree Gully, in his hometown of Adelaide, after two summers with the Dogs, it left a massive void in the line-up. Winter-Irving felt he could upgrade his own role to help cover Haberfield’s exit. But he momentarily lost sight of what made him a top-line Premier Cricket bowler – one that saw him win the 2013-14 premiership with the Bulldogs – and he endured a slow start to the campaign. “Obviously someone had to sort of take [Haberfield’s] role but I probably tried to overbowl,” Winter-Irving told Star Weekly. “Now I think it’s more about . . . bowling from one end and trying to make the batters play a bit more. “The last couple of weeks has been good. I’ve hit a bit of form.” Winter-Irving turned for advice to club

legend Merv Hughes, a former Bulldogs, Victorian and Australian champion who has always been willing to provide help for young fast bowlers at the kennel. Winter-Irving sees him as a mentor. “He’s a ripping fella, a fantastic bloke to have around the club,” Winter-Irving said. “We have a lot of young kids at the club, so to have him around is really good. “I pick his brain for anything. He’s always got an answer for you and he’ll always tell you the truth, which is really good.” Bulldogs coach Steve Chapman sees great potential in Winter-Irving, while captain Dean Russ backs every single one of his players. “Chappy’s been helping me out and noticed a couple of things I can work on,” Winter-Irving said. “Russy is one of the best captains I’ve played under. “When things aren’t going right, he’ll back you to the hilt.” Winter-Irving is a household name at Footscray Edgewater, even at the age of 22. It was not an easy transition for him from the country lifestyle in Shepparton to the big smoke of Melbourne.

His first two seasons were spent commuting from his home town to the city for training and on match days, but that was unsustainable. “You need to move down, then you can fully commit,” Winter-Irving said. “I had to make the move, to be able to train two nights a week and make it easy on myself and not having to drive on a Saturday morning. “It’s been a good decision. I love the club.” Winter-Irving works as a curator at Bill Lawry Oval, home of Northcote Cricket Club. “It helps my game a bit as well,” he said. “I look at the wickets at different grounds and can kind of tell how they’re going to play.” Winter-Irving’s ultimate goal is to be selected to play for Victoria and he draws inspiration from teammate Travis Dean, who took the Sheffield Shield by storm earlier this summer. “I still have a lot of cricket ahead, so I’d love to win another flag for the Dogs,” he said. “The next step would be to try to get a game for the [Victorian] Futures League team. “I think it’s everyone’s dream when you start off as a junior cricketer. “Travvy Dean has done it and just look at him. He has taken every opportunity and shown everyone what he can do.”

Gee, I wish I was as certain of winning Tatts as I was of that being ratified by the red, white and blue players, as I have never seen anyone in my time at the Bulldogs more suited to being the captain of the club. Import leads Saints’ revival By Lance Jenkinson St Andrews Footscray is the hottest team in Victorian Turf Cricket Association west A1. The Saints have strung together four wins in a row and will have a fifth in their sights against long-time rivals Kingsville Baptists when the second day of their contest resumes at Pennell Reserve on Saturday. Much of the revival has been to do with the form of star second-year import Gihan Kankanamge. The Sri Lankan sensation has smashed more than 400 runs this season, including three centuries. He raised the bat for a ton to rapturous applause from teammates against Kingsville on Saturday. Opening batsman Simon Krygger has played more than 250 games for the Saints and cannot recall there being a more accomplished batsman at the club than Kankanamge. “He’s probably as good as anyone we’ve ever had,” Krygger said. “He played first-class cricket in Sri Lanka. “We got him over last year and he won the competition champion player by plenty and really dominated. After a little bit of a slow start this year he’s made three tons and is really stepping it up again.” The 29-year-old from Colombo also packs some mean off-spin, having taken 18 wickets at 12.3 this season. Kankanamge aside, St Andrews’ form has also been turned around due to its bowling on the whole. The Saints identified that as a key area for improvement after going win-less in the first four rounds of the season. “We were bowling really poor in those games,” Krygger said. Hometown favourites hold their own at Australian Open

Williamstown’s Andrew Whittington and doubles partner Alex Bolt were given only a short leash at the 2016 Australian Open. The Whittington-Bolt duo was ousted in the first round at Melbourne Park on Wednesday, after a gruelling three-set defeat to India’s Mahesh Bupathi and Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller. The Bupathi-Muller combination clinched a 7-6 (7-4) 3-6 6-4 win over the hometown favourites in two hours 13 minutes on outside court seven. It was a disappointing outcome for the locals, with memories of their quarter finals appearance only two years ago still fresh.

In the Bupathi-Muller combo, there is Bupathi, who is a doubles specialist, a 41-year-old veteran with 52 doubles titles and more than $6.6 million in prizemoney, while Muller has a singles ranking of 38th in the world and $3.2 million in prizemoney. Compare that to Whittington, who has won a modest $125,000 in comparison and is a developing 22-year-old starting to make his way in the game, and Bolt, a year older with $217,000 career earnings … and you can see the difference. But Whittington and Bolt were certainly not out of their depth. There were periods in the match where they would have been fancied

to go on and record victory. They actually won more points in the match – 113 to 105. But, unfortunately, the young Australians could not last the distance. After losing a first set tiebreaker, Whittington and Bolt hit back strongly to take the second set. Right across the board, the stats were fairly even, but the inability of Whittington and Bolt to convert break points was telling. They converted just three of the 15 available, while Bupathi and Muller got the one that counted in the third set to run out winners. Lance Jenkinson

Seagulls chase finals spot on busy weekend

And mum made a ton . . . By Lance Jenkinson A mother and daughter are delivering a potent one-two punch for Altona Roosters in women’s cricket’s north-west division. Helen Harris, 53, and daughter Breannan, 23, of Point Cook, are key cogs for the finals-hunting Roosters. While they share a like-minded passion for cricket, the team benefits from their totally contrasting skills. Helen tops the competition batting aggregate with more than 400 runs, while Breannan went into the new year as the competition’s leading wicket-taker with 15, although she has since fallen to third. “I didn’t actually realise I was leading the whole comp,” Breannan said. “I thought mum would be up there but there are quite a lot of good batters in the competition. “That goes to show how incredible a batter she is and her age is irrelevant.” Breannan admits she hated cricket when she used to watch her mum on weekends but when she was 10 she joined a team and became hooked on the sport.

“They were starting a junior girls team’ at Altona North Cricket Club and mum made me go along,” Breannan said. “I didn’t want to but I went along [and] from then on I just loved it. I played in the junior girls’ team and the senior ladies team when I was 10.” Helen was the club captain at Altona North at the time. Fast forward to today and Breannan now captains the Roosters. Helen, meanwhile, continues to maintain a high standard of play. She has smashed 431 runs at 47 this season, including a century against Spotswood in round two. And as wicketkeeper, she has three catches and five stumping, having a profound impact. Breannan paid tribute to her mother’s preparation and willingness to stay in shape. “She has a personal trainer twice a week, she trains for cricket on Thursday night and then plays on Sunday,” Breannan said. “She works hard at keeping her fitness. We weren’t blessed with amazing natural talent, but we’ve always worked hard at our cricket.” Helen is not one for adulation, preferring to focus on the team aspects, and when she makes

a big score she is reticent to express her joy. “If we’re clapping on the sidelines, she ignores it and doesn’t want to raise her bat,” Breannan said. “She’s like ‘let’s get on with the game’.” Breannan can graft out a good score with the bat, but she isn’t yet a shadow of her mum. Her craft is spin bowling and with 15 wickets at 16.2, she is one of the best in the competition. “I’ve been able to bat with her this season, which has been really good,” she said. “I do my best to make runs but I’ve never been as good as her.” The Roosters are sitting in the top four and have finals in their sights. The club is looking to grow its women’s section next summer with interest booming since the coverage of the Women’s Big Bash League on Channel 10. “In the last couple of weeks, we’ve had a couple of girls turn up to training who have never played before and I’ve had emails looking for details,” Breannan said. “Interest seems to have doubled since Christmas, so we’re hoping to expand next season or the season after and get two ladies’ teams.”

Williamstown is preparing for its biggest weekend of the summer in Sub-District cricket. The Seagulls will play a one-day match against local rivals Yarraville on Saturday in what could shape their regular season campaign. The Gulls are three points outside the top six and will be eager to close the gap when the Eagles pay a visit to Williamstown Cricket Ground. The match was originally scheduled as a two-dayer but the first day was rained off last Saturday. It is not the only order of business for Williamstown this weekend. The Seagulls will be one of four teams fighting it out for the Twenty20 title on finals day at JK Grant Reserve in Altona on Sunday. The Gulls face Brunswick in one semi-final, while Croydon meets Oakleigh simultaneously on a second ground. The two winners will meet in the 3pm grand final. Lance Jenkinson
