Whippy a whip-crackin’ wonder Just months after Altona whipcracker Nathan ‘Whippy’ Griggs won a Guinness world record for Australia, his American arch-rival snatched it back. So Mr Griggs had to outdo his adversary, Adam ‘Crack’ Winrich, all over again. Last Wednesday, it was confirmed that the record for most whipcracks in one minute was back in Australian hands. “I did 614 cracks in a minute. Victoria University has been forced to apologise to thousands of prospective students after mistakenly suggesting they had been offered early entry to courses due to begin this year. The university says a “system error” led to a December 24 email being sent to many more hopeful applicants than those intended to receive it. The Christmas Eve email was intended to remind students who had already received early offers to enrol in courses starting in this year’s first semester. But the blunder wasn’t detected until January 4 when the university was contacted by some unintended recipients of the email. Irate parents and potential students vented their frustration on Victoria University’s Facebook page. Heidi Jackson, whose daughter has applied to study law, posted that she was sad for students misled by the incorrect email. “Poor form Vic Uni, poor form. So how many desperate and driven students received email offers in error? Shame on you.” Lola Lopez also shared her frustration after receiving the Christmas Eve email. “As someone who was a recipient of one of those emails, I am bitterly disappointed. It’s a cruel joke to play on someone.” Michelle Meadows Lavars said her son “has been on an emotional rollercoaster” due to the error. “He was just recovering from major surgery and it lifted his spirits to know he was going to study his favourite subject –

history. Then we received the horrible email and it was totally gut wrenching. I want them to realise the damage they have done. I hope someone got the sack for it because it’s totally unacceptable.” Acting vice-chancellor Kerri-Lee Krause said VU took immediate action to recall and clarify the email when it became aware of the error.

Drug, sex crimes on rise By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Reports of sexual offences increased in Hobsons Bay in the 12 months to September 30 last year, new Crime Statistics Agency figures show. Police and support groups attributed the increase – from 125 to 139 – to ‘historical’ offences and more confidence in speaking out. Drug dealing and trafficking offences also rose in Hobsons Bay, from 34 to 42. Sexual offences rose by just one in Maribyrnong (126 to 127), which recorded an almost 60 per cent surge in drug dealing and trafficking offences, up from 101 to 162. There were two homicides reported in Hobsons

Bay and a further two in Maribyrnong. Both Maribyrnong homicides were family violence-related. The first occurred in Yarraville in November 2014, the second in Footscray in January last year. In Hobsons Bay, Khaled Abou Hasna, 39, was shot multiple times last April as he stepped from his car outside his mother’s home in Lewin Court, Altona Meadows. Police said he appeared to have been ambushed in a targeted attack but would not say if his death was related to underworld figures. This death remains unsolved. In December 2014, Altona North man Roger Bertocci, 46, was fatally stabbed about 200 metres from his Knapp Street home after going

New-look loo sparks online flurry By Benjamin Millar Victoria University’s first all-gender toilet has created a campus-wide storm as vocal critics and defenders clash over the installation. The conversion last week of a male bathroom at the Footscray Park campus to the all-gender toilet, with new inclusive signage, follows a two-year campaign for the change. Victoria University Student Union president Sarah Schafer Rivilla said the bathroom was one of the priorities identified by the VU Pride

collective, along with a LGBTQIA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual) safe space, on campus. “We haven’t had any success in terms of a safe space, but we see the altering of the signage as a progressive step.” Ms Rivilla said the move had the support of VU management and staff but had led to mixed reactions among students. A social media posting last week announcing the changes has since attracted close to 200 comments and more than 46,000 views.

Ms Rivilla said a number of comments by current VU students and others had been removed. “Some of them were disgusting – some people we know are students, but a lot of people were just randomly commenting on the page, and they go to other universities.”

Ms Rivilla said it had been heartening to see a number of posts in support of the change. She said the location and signage remained open for discussion, and the student union would meet with senior staff this week to discuss further “inclusivity improvements”. VU chief operating officer Jonathan Tribe said the bathroom conversion was an initiative of the university’s ‘respect and responsibility steering committee’. “The university prides itself on [welcoming] students, staff and visitors of all backgrounds and sexual orientations.”

Mighty task ‘no chore’ Williamstown’s Xander Schmitz is the youngest cyclist in next month’s three-day 25000spins Great Ocean Road Challenge, riding from Geelong to Warrnambool to raise money for children living in poverty. Xander, 10, says he wants to use something he’s good at to help people. “I love sports and am very good at riding,” he says. “This is a very big ride for me. The first two days are over 120 kilometres and have lots of hills. So I really have to be ready for it.” Xander, a member of the Western Suburbs Triathlon Club and Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club, said his triathlon coach had tailored a special program for the ride, which will cover 300 kilometres in three days. He said knowing there were children living in poverty made him “more than sad – really sad”. “These children don’t have any books and

don’t even have enough to eat a lot of the time,” Xander said. “The money I’m raising will help pay for two greenhouses for a community to help kids grow their own food, or it can also get running water to a town.” His father, Warwick Schmitz, says he’s really proud of Xander, who always rides with a smile on his face. “This is a tough challenge for anyone, let alone a kid who’s just turned 10. I think the thing that’s so inspiring is that he’s always happy; this isn’t a chore for him. “We have a lot of support from local riders when they see him and everyone can tell that he’s enjoying himself. Even after three or four hours of solid riding, he’s still happy.” Xander aims to raise $2500 by February 4. EPA investigates bad smell

The EPA is investigating the source of an odour that led to more than 200 odour pollution reports to its hotline across Melbourne’s western suburbs on Sunday night. Reports started in Altona but spread as far as Tullamarine, Derrimut, Kealba and Aberfeldie. EPA officers were sent out to investigate the matter and locate the source of the odour.

West mourns crash victims By Goya Dmytryshchak A quarter of road deaths recorded during the 22-day Victoria Police holiday road blitz happened in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said 12 people died on Victoria’s roads during Operation Roadwise, which ran from December 13 to January 3. Two teenagers died when their car ran off the Princes Freeway at Altona, before the Kororoit Creek Road exit, on December 29. The car hit a tree and burst into flames. Police said the driver, Ethan Watson-Day, 18, of Yarraville, had obtained his licence only about a week earlier. They said his passenger, Jarrod Beven, 16, from Altona North, had been trying to obtain directions by phone. David Dedic, a close friend of both boys, said people did not understand the actual toll of road trauma. “They see a statistic, a figure, say two deaths, and go, ‘It’s just another statistic,

another figure’,” he said. “But they don’t actually realise the number of lives those two people affected. Like the whole of Altona . . . we all knew them.” A man died on December 30 when gas cylinders on his truck exploded and the vehicle crashed into a fence on the corner of Barkly Street and Gordon Street in Footscray. VicRoads chief executive John Merritt said 11 more drivers were killed on the state’s roads in 2015 than in 2014. Under Operation Roadwise, 12 drink-drivers were detected in Hobsons Bay. Police detected 38 unregistered vehicles and caught 15 unlicensed and nine disqualified drivers. They also booked nine drivers for speeding offences, four people disobeying traffic controls, one motorist not wearing a seatbelt and two using mobile phones. In Maribyrnong, police detected 29 unregistered vehicles and 12 drink-drivers, eight people driving unlicensed, 11 speeders, 11 disobeying traffic controls, one without a seatbelt and one using a mobile phone. They also detected 20 pedestrian offences and one cyclist breaking the law.

Helping hand a little ripper Altona Life Saving Club has come to the rescue of children in the Nippers program affected by the Wye River bushfires. Altona is the sister club of Wye River Surf Life Saving Club, which had to cancel this year’s Nippers program for about 150 children because of the devastating Great Ocean Road fires which destroyed 116 houses. Wye River club representative, Altona resident Adam Bordignon, said a lot of the children enrolled in the program came from holiday homes in the town, a third of which were lost. Clubs at Apollo Bay, Lorne, Fairhaven and Altona have offered to let Wye River’s Nippers participate in their programs at no extra cost.

Altona’s president, Steve Schofield, said his club’s Nippers program started on Sunday, with more than 200 local children enrolled. “We have had some feedback from some of [Wye River’s] Nippers and we hope to see as many as we can,” he said. “We were down there for a training weekend in October and they were really welcoming; they let us use their clubhouse, their equipment, their bunk house. “To help out the Wye River community, and the club in general, is something we’re honoured to do. Swim centre closure a sore point By Benjamin Millar A Seddon resident left “sad and frustrated” by a decision to close Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre on Boxing Day fears demand for parking by Highpoint shopping centre customers could force the centre to close more often. Larissa MacFarlane said she was told by aquatic centre management they were closing the centre during the Boxing Day sales because of heavy traffic, loss of parking due to Highpoint shoppers and the cost of security guards. “It is outrageous that a shopping centre is dictating Maribyrnong City Council’s ability

to provide access to a community asset,” she said. Ms MacFarlane said a large number of people were unhappy and disappointed “such poor planning” by the council led to the Boxing Day closure. “My fear is that without some action, the ever-expanding shopping centre of Highpoint will lead to more days of closure of our swimming pool,” she said. Of 450 parking spaces surrounding the aquatic centre, 150 spaces were initially allocated to users and 300 designated to be shared between the centre and Highpoint.

A June, 2014, council report noted a number of issues with parking caused by competition between aquatic centre users and Highpoint customers, particularly during peak times such as Thursday and Friday nights and the middle of Saturday. Council community wellbeing acting director Lynley Dumble said moves such as using a security guard at peak times and changing the time limit on parking in Aquatic Drive substantially alleviated the problem. “Boxing Day has historically seen low numbers attend the MAC as many people may still be enjoying the holiday season with

friends and family,” she said. “There is also considerable traffic congestion in the precinct due to the popularity of Boxing Day sales at adjacent Highpoint shopping centre.” Ms Dumble said roads surrounding the centre were in gridlock and carparks filled by shoppers. “Stories of one to two hours to travel a kilometre are not uncommon,” she said. “Many members have had to leave the centre on Boxing Day as they are not able to find a carpark. However, Boxing Day is the only day that we close the centre due to traffic and parking issues.”

On 24 November 2015 at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, Australian Tallow Producers Pty Ltd (ACN: 007 046 059) (the “Accused”) was found guilty of three air pollution offences brought by the Environment Protection Authority (the “EPA”) in relation to pollution of the atmosphere so that it was offensive to the senses of human beings on 22 June 2011, 23 June 2011 and 21 September 2011. The Court convicted and discharged without fine and ordered to pay the EPA’s costs, including witness costs, costs of senior and junior counsel, all preparation and written submissions costs and costs of instructing solicitor. Further, the Court has ordered the Accused to make payment of $200,000 to the Hobsons Bay City Council for the following environmental project: The Brooklyn Reserve project involves the design and construction of a destination play space, informal recreation zone and planting of deciduous, evergreen, native and orchid trees. Stage 3 of the project will enable the Council to deliver to the Brooklyn community improvements to the local environment by upgrading the reserve area. The project will entail the following: Design of the play space and informal recreation zone; Construction of the play space and informal recreation zone including purchase of the play equipment, demolition works of existing play equipment, construction of drainage and plumbing, civil works (paving installation, rubber matting etc), park furniture; Planting of approximately 40 trees and hydro seeding recreation zone and soil preparation.

Vets are urging dog and cat owners to consider pet insurance, with one western suburbs emergency clinic alone treating about 40 animals for snake bites since October and many more euthanised. Altona North cat owner Ros Englezos was left with a $2443 bill after her cat, Cody, was treated for a snake bite at U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital. Ms Englezos, whose cat was bitten near Altona Gate Shopping Centre, has set up a mycause crowdfunding page for Cody. It has so far raised $1100. She found Cody panting and floppy under her couch and rushed him to hospital. The anti venom cost $729 but costs quickly piled up after Cody spent days in an oxygen chamber in intensive care. He is recovering at home but Ms Englezos fears Cody could be at risk of being bitten again.

A dark tale of family relationships has earned a Footscray writer a prestigious short story prize. Barry Lee Thompson wrote the first version of Their Cruel Routines a few years ago, recently revisiting the work for an entry in the Overland Victoria University Short Story Prize. Thompson says he received valuable feedback on his story from fellow members of the Elwood Writers group, which he frequents fortnightly, despite his move to Footscray. “It’s a story about a troubled family relationship. The original idea came during a visit to my own family in the UK. I was thinking about the various ways families can be dysfunctional,” he said. Playground to rise from ashes By Benjamin Millar Plans to build a new playground in Braybrook are being finalised after a suspected arson attack destroyed the existing playground at Lance Reichstein Reserve just before Christmas. Police are still investigating the cause of the December 22 blaze, which caused damage valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars to the popular aeroplane-themed wooden playground. Maribyrnong council last week ordered the demolition of what remains of the destroyed playground, which residents claim had become

a haven for bad behaviour that left the space strewn with broken glass. Phone video footage shows large flames engulfing the wooden structure. Police are also investigating whether a nearby brawl caught on camera is related to attempts by bystanders to apprehend the suspected arsonist. Deputy mayor Catherine Cumming said security guards were on hand during the demolition of the playground, which was officially opened in 1999. “Plans for a new playground will soon be considered and presented to our community

for feedback,” she said. “While we intend to rebuild a playground on the site, a number of design options will be considered.” Cr Cumming confirmed that early concept drawings had incorporated the aeroplane theme. Timing of the works will depend on the payment of the insurance claim, the outcome

of the community consultation and the total cost of the project. Council chief executive Stephen Wall said the council was dismayed by the damage, especially if it was the result of arson. “The destruction of any of our playgrounds is severely felt by our community, but at this time of year it will be felt even more,” he said. “The Christmas holidays are a time for families to spend together and our Aeroplane Park is a place families could do exactly that.” Anyone with information about the fire is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Get hooked on a classic The thing about fishing is that it does more than catch fish. That’s The Thing About Fishing (TTTAF), a not-for-profit organisation, is holding a kids clinic at Altona’s Cherry Lake on January 17. Co-founder Glenn Cooper teamed up with fellow angler Brian Rowley to establish the program after breaking his ankle working about nine years ago. “I’m a mad fisherman and to cope with everything I used to go fishing all the time,” Mr Cooper said. He soon realised how beneficial fishing could be to people battling depression and other mental health issues or disability, and to men’s health groups and youth in trouble or at risk. Mr Cooper said fishing could be used as a therapeutic way of changing lives. He said the children’s clinics got children interacting with their families in the outdoors,

instead of playing computer games and living in front of their screens on “unsocial media”. “The other week I was over at Altona, I looked at Cherry Lake,” Mr Cooper said. “I’ve heard there’s carp and redfin in here, both noxious fish which can’t be returned to the water. “So, I thought, well, what a good way of actually getting the kids out there to see if we can catch some fish and do something for the environment, but also give the kids a good fun day.” The clinics are staffed by volunteers and all equipment is supplied through donation. “Everything we do is for free,” Mr Cooper said. “I do it all on a disability pension.” The kids clinic is on from 10am, with a barbecue and drinks by gold coin donation. Pageant opens our eyes Newport will host the Miss Gay and Miss Transsexual Australia pageant as part of this month’s Midsumma Festival. Deer Park nurse J.O. Rojas (pictured), the reigning Miss Transsexual Australia, said the event’s aim was to raise awareness of issues facing the gay and transgender communities. “It’s been a struggle for a long time – discrimination,” she said. “Some people still see us as a burden or something like that, but I just want to open their eyes that we’re just like anyone else, human beings going through life. We have struggles, we go through life like you.” Ms Rojas, 30, said her mother at first didn’t accept her after her gender change but then realised she was missing out on her daughter’s life.

“I grew up in the Philippines, it’s a very conservative country,” she said. “In my family, I was the first one like full-on transgender and my mum wasn’t very accepting at first. “I left home during college when I was studying. “It took a bit of time before my mum accepted me and then she realised, ‘I have a daughter and she’s beautiful’. She realised she’d been missing all that for not accepting me right away. “With that support, I felt more at ease with everything. I just want to encourage everyone going through what I’ve been through . . . just stay strong.” The pageant will be held at The Substation on January 30.

What’s your connection to Williamstown? I grew up in Williamstown – my family has lived here for decades. After living in Sydney for 15 years, when the professional opportunity came to move back to Melbourne, I chose to come straight home to Willy. What’s your fondest memory from living here? When I was young I used to love the Williamstown Festival over the Australia Day weekend. It always seemed so exciting to see Nelson Place come alive with entertainment, shows, bands, a

parade, ice creams, fireworks and hanging with friends. While it also heralded the end of summer school holidays it always seemed like the perfect end to summer. What do you love about Williamstown? The water, the fresh air, the views, the history, the feeling of escaping the city and yet its proximity to the city, and I feel blessed to live in among a beautiful, friendly community. What would you change? I believe the arts should be an integral part of all Australians lives and I work towards encouraging and supporting a rich, diverse national culture. I’d like to see a greater understanding of the value of the arts in our lives from all levels of government and society. The arts, just like sport, can be the social glue of communities because it offers a sense of connection, community, participation, creativity and innovation and keeps people of all ages active and healthy both physically and mentally. Art challenges us to look at beauty and tragedy in a new way. It can hold a mirror up to our lives and help us reflect on our past, present and future, and it also stimulates the national and local economies. What’s your favourite cafe/eatery? Can you tell me about your work in opera? I’m the executive producer, touring and outreach, for Opera Australia. I produce operas all around Australia and have initiated extensive community engagement programs, including creating 37 regional children’s choruses, involving 757 children from Tennant Creek and the Pilbara to Warrnambool and Rockhampton. I have recently produced, from its inception, a new Australian Opera called The Rabbits, based on the book by John Marsden and Shaun Tan, which Kate Miller-Heidke composed. It tells a story of colonisation, civilisation and progress and is a show for all ages. The Rabbits received enormous critical success and won four Helpmann Awards in 2015 including Best New Australian Work. After sold-out seasons in Perth and the Melbourne Festival, The Rabbits will next be seen at the Sydney Festival this month.

■ The western suburbs football community is still in mourning following the tragic deaths of teenagers Jesse Edwards and Brandon Christopoulos just after Christmas. The 19-year-olds were on their way to the Gold Coast for a holiday when the car they were travelling in left the Newell Highway in New South Wales. Jesse played for Glenorden Football Club and Brandon most recently played at Hoppers Crossing. These young men were farewelled by a massive crowd and the outpouring of emotion was enormous. My thoughts – and I am sure the thoughts of this column’s readers – are with them at this time.

Filling in for first-choice gloveman Hayden Castle, who was unavailable for the first game of the new year, Mattsson snared six dismissals: five catches and a stumping. Unfortunately for Castle, the tight one-day game ended in his side’s one-wicket defeat to Elsternwick at Elsternwick Park on Saturday … but there’s no doubt the youngster left an indelible mark. “He’s been doing really well in the seconds and he played a couple of our T20 games,” Seagulls captain Dale McDonald told Star Weekly. “I would say at some stage, maybe next year or the year after, he will go to Premier Cricket and do pretty well. “He’s playing in the Western Spirit under-18s pathways carnival, so he’s got a pretty big week ahead of him. “If he sticks around, he will be a shining light for our club as a wicketkeeper-batsman.” For Williamstown, it was a case of the one that got away. The Seagulls carved out a competitive 8-203 off 45 overs, with McDonald (59) and Mosun Hussain (40) standouts of the top order. Pat O’Malley (25no) and Nathan Bratby (24) produced valuable late runs to give the Gulls a decent score to defend. After having Elsternwick an early wicket down, the Seagulls got sloppy with the ball and allowed the home side back into the game. Dogs need to get a grip By Lance Jenkinson The pressure is building on Footscray Edgewater. The Bulldogs are in real danger of missing the finals for a second season since their glory days as premiers in 2013-14. The down-on-their-luck Dogs are counting the cost of three consecutive narrow losses, which left them in 12th place on the Premier Cricket ladder, forced into playing catch-up with the pack leaders. It’s a similar predicament to last summer, which ended horribly. Bulldogs’ captain, Dean Russ, is bemoaning the points that have slipped out of his team’s grasp in recent times. “That’s two [one-day] games in a row that we’ve lost by less than 10 runs, which is a bit of a hard pill to swallow,” he told Star Weekly. “Knowing that we’re competing against the top teams is a positive, but winning those games is vital if you want to be playing deep into March.” But there is still life in the old dog. Ace back on home turf Melbourne Aces have brought in major league veteran Peter Moylan for their final home stand of the Australian Baseball League season. The right-handed pitcher has played eight seasons in the MLB with Atlanta Braves (two stints) and Los Angeles Dodgers since debuting in 2006. The 37-year-old has a 22-9 record in the bigs with a 2.83 earned run average in 331 relief appearances. He had his breakout tournament representing Australia at the 2006 World Baseball Classic while a minor leaguer in the Minnesota Twins system. Moylan is one of four players with major league experience recently added to the Aces’ roster with infielder Brad Harmon and pitchers Shane Lindsay and Virgil Vasquez. The four-game home series against Brisbane Bandits at the Melbourne Ballpark will start tomorrow night with game one at 7.05. But he’s confident he can help lift the club up the divisions on a shoestring budget. “I take great satisfaction in helping build a club and seeing it progress,” he told Star Weekly. “In these lower leagues, it’s always tough. “If some clubs decide they’re hellbent on getting promoted, they might start throwing a bit of money around, whereas Altona North is a bit different – there’s no money to throw around. We’ll work with what we get.” Loschiavo is the right man to take North to the promised land of promotion because he has faced a similar challenge in the past. The 35-year-old was the inaugural coach of Essendon United and got them promoted inside two years. What United may have lacked in transfer funds, they covered with total commitment from the players. But it was not always the case at United in his first pre-season. “We got promoted in the club’s second year in existence from the old provisional 3 league,” Loschiavo recalls. “To be honest, when I initially went down there and signed and agreed to the position, we looked to start pre-season nice and early, [but] we were getting only half a dozen players so I actually resigned at that point. “Four weeks before the season, they rang me and said they had 40 players, and we got a really good squad together and were able to get them through to promotion.

“We were successful because we had a committed group and a great culture at the club. If everyone is willing to commit, I can’t see why we can’t be successful this year.” North is a more established club, founded in 1975 from Duanne Reserve. But it has struggled to get out of the lower rungs of the state leagues. An outside influence was needed, and Loschiavo’s wide-ranging coaching roles proved attractive to North, which handed him the job 24 hours after his first interview. “The guys at Altona North are really ambitious and want to see the club move forward and get promoted,” Loschiavo said. “They do have some established squad members and, once pre-season comes along, we’ll assess what’s there and what’s available and hopefully bring in a few new faces to achieve what we want to achieve, which is promotion next year.” Loschiavo has coached longer than most people his age after a workplace accident ruined his playing career. At 21, he fell off a ladder, putting him in hospital and ending his run as a goalkeeper. “I had three bulging discs in my back, I fractured my coccyx bone, tore every possible ligament in my left knee and tore the medial in my right knee,” he said. “I lived and breathed for soccer back then, so it was a big shock. “Coaching was a way to stay involved, and I always found myself to be a bit of an on-field leader and that stemmed into a natural progression into coaching. “With the experience I’ve had in coaching and being involved in clubs in the higher leagues, I’d like to think we can bring some of that knowledge down to Altona North and help build the club to, hopefully, one day become a powerhouse.”
