Billy Broadway is home again

On July 4, 1940, Kingsville five-year-old William ‘Billy’ Broadway pedalled his beloved tricycle away from his Somerville Road home, never to return. Billy drowned in water that had pooled in one of the area’s then plentiful quarries. Family pleas on the rise Family violence referrals by police to Women’s Health West have more than doubled in the past two years, prompting calls for more support for vulnerable women and children. The Footscray-based service received a record 8452 police referrals from across the west in the 12 months to the end of June – an average of one every hour, and a 36 per cent increase on the 6209 referrals the year before. The rate is now more than 10 times greater than the 708 referrals received in 2006-07. WHW chief executive Robyn Gregory said

the dramatic spike reflected improvements to how Victoria Police dealt with family violence as a crime, as well as the public leadership of police commissioners and other civic leaders. “There is also a whole heap of publicity around family violence, thanks to the Royal Commission and Rosie Batty being made Australian of the Year and her awe-inspiring ability to turn a personal tragedy into a campaign to end family violence.” Dr Gregory said the public conversation had helped more women make contact with services after years of suffering family violence in silence.

She has also noticed a shift in the willingness of other people to intervene, such as neighbours calling the police if they hear violent episodes. The rapid escalation in referrals may help put women in touch with services, but it is also putting a heavy strain on Women’s Health West’s resources. Dr Gregory said the federal government needed to “put its money where its mouth is” and boost efforts to support prevention programs. “We need funds to help us respond, not just at the crisis point but to help women with healing and recovery and relocation, to deal

with the trauma of family violence and help create a happier life.” Dr Gregory said this could only occur with a break from the political cycle, and 25 to 30 years of real investment and commitment across the political spectrum. She pointed to a $108,000 grant in the 2015-16 state government budget to fund a full-time children’s counsellor at Women’s Health West as part of a $3.5 million boost to counselling services for survivors of family violence across the state, as a positive sign the problem was being treated seriously at the state level.

National Tree Day Harris Reserve off Marsh Street, Altona North is an ideal location for this year’s National Tree Day event. Hatt Reserve revetment wall Works on the Hatt Reserve revetment wall have begun and are expected to be complete by early September. The works, undertaken by Council and the Department of Environment, Water and Land Planning, will bolster the shoreline from future flooding. There will be some disruption to the pathway along the foreshore due to the construction site and users of Hatt Reserve will be directed to the shared trail closer to The Esplanade. Trucks will also be entering the construction site at one location along The Esplanade and foreshore.

enable sections of the reserve to flatten out providing new public spaces for the community to meet and play in. We will soon be starting on the gabion walls. These are mesh frame walls filled with rocks commonly used around shorelines. They’re perfect for Jack Madigan as they don’t require penetrating deep into the hard rock to provide a foundation. The rocks have been sourced from local landfill sites as a nod to the reserve’s past when, from the mid-1970s onwards, it was used as a landfill site.

Skeleton Creek Maintenance works Maintenance works are continuing along Skeleton Creek, Altona Green with the planting of 600 trees, shrubs and groundcovers to sections of the reserve between Merton Street and Creek Water Mews. The improvements form part of a partnership program between Council, Friends of Skeleton Creek and Melbourne Water to improve habitat and renew plantings in the area.

Bruce Comben Reserve The redevelopment of the Bruce Comben Reserve pavilion, which will allow the local rugby club to use the facility in the winter, should be completed by mid-October. New floodlighting will be installed later in the year to accompany the pavilion upgrade.

Alma Avenue shops The Alma Avenue shops recently received a mini makeover with new

line marking in the car park, landscape improvements to the garden areas, graffiti removal to signage and shop fronts. The upgrade is now complete with the final installation of furniture occurring in mid-July.

Woods and Lohse Street resurfacing Following on from the upgrades to Lohse Reserve, the area’s about to receive another improvement with road rehab taking place along Lohse Street between Maher Road and Woods Street. Works will include road resurfacing, new kerb and channel, and improved drainage. This is the first of a number of road rehabilitation projects for 2015-16.

VCAT told of attack by police An African-Australian filmmaker has accused police of victimising him in a string of racially motivated attacks – a claim that police deny. Representing himself at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Hamadou Djime made 27 allegations of discrimination, sexual harassment, victimisation, racial vilification and human rights breaches against individual police and Victoria Police as a whole. The accusations, including alleged sexual harassment at Footscray railway station, have also been lodged with the Office of Police

Integrity and the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission. Mr Djime’s complaints relate to a series of incidents stretching back to 2008, after his 2006 arrival from Mali. In one incident, Mr Djime arrived at Footscray railway station on May 15, 2013 but did not ‘touch on’ his myki card as he had recently done so on a tram. Mr Djime alleges two female senior constables followed and flirted with him “like two high school girls”, before telling him he had committed an offence by not tapping his myki. Defence evidence suggested the women called for back-up after Mr Djime began acting

aggressively, which Mr Djime denied. He alleged he was assaulted, molested and had his dreadlocks pulled before being put into a police van and dumped in an industrial area “in the middle of nowhere” between Footscray and North Melbourne stations. Mr Djime also claimed at VCAT he was assaulted by police during a later incident in his Sunshine rental property in September 2013. He said he was handcuffed and beaten by a sergeant, claiming he was “smashed to the floor, kicked and punched 12 times on the back”. VCAT heard Mr Dimje was later charged with assaulting a police sergeant and the

Seddon barber Doug Howie has vowed to keep working, despite his iconic Seddon barbershop being set for the chop. Mr Howie last week discovered that the bright yellow Williamstown Road salon, home to his business for more than 15 years, will be redeveloped as housing. But despite the setback, the 70-year-old says he wants to go on for at least another 30 years. “I’m not retiring, I’m just moving on. I’m going to try to find a shop as close as I can. Even if I end up in a tin shed, I will cut hair.” Mr Howie has been locking lops for 56 years. He picked up his first scissors as a 14-year-old when his “silver-tongued” policeman father got him an apprenticeship after he was kicked out of school. Aside from those first few years in Healesville and a handful in Bourke Street in the CBD, the Williamstown resident has always plied his trade in Seddon, and he’s a witness to the area’s rapid change. “When I came to Gamon Street, easily 80 per cent of my customers were older. There were about 40-50 factories and I never stopped all day, every day. Now 98 per cent of them are dead and I’m the old one,” he says. Mr Howie is the first to admit he has grown a little eccentric over the years – ‘Odd Sweeney’ being one name he has toyed with for the shop – but he says the customers keep coming back. “It’s word of mouth. My wife calls me Basil, from Fawlty Towers, but I can cut hair. I’ve got great pride in my work; I love it and I do every haircut as if it’s a competition.” Mr Howie’s shop is renowned for its assortment of odds and ends from around the world, a collection built from scratch. “My brother, a long, long time ago gave me a dingo trap. He said, ‘Put this in your shop and you’ll have something to talk about’. I did, then someone brought in a rabbit trap. Then people started bringing lamps,” he said. “It’s my little world. I’ve had it in every shop I’ve had … I couldn’t work in a normal place any more.” Benjamin Millar

A Hobsons Bay councillor has proposed a three-month freeze on weekday parking fees in Nelson Place, Williamstown, starting on August 1. Cr Angela Altair said a free-parking trial would be aimed at helping struggling traders, who suggested a winter freeze on paid parking in a budget submission made last year. The parking metre fee is $3 an hour, but parking is free for residents with a permit. Cr Altair said weekends in Nelson Place were busy so the trial was proposed for quieter periods. “Originally, I was planning [free parking] just for Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but we probably won’t get a true picture doing that, so we may as well try and go the whole hog – Monday to Friday.” Cr Altair was expected to put the free-parking proposal to her fellow councillors at their meeting last night. Williamstown Chamber of Commerce (WCC) president Laura Nardo said the move showed the council was committed to ensuring success for small, local businesses. Megan Darling, convenor of the Yarraville Village Says No to Paid Parking group, said Maribyrnong council should follow Hobsons Bay’s lead and halt next month’s scheduled introduction of paid parking in Yarraville. Yarraville residents and traders have come out overwhelmingly against paid parking, arguing it will destroy local trade by pushing shoppers to areas with free parking such as shopping centres.

He was found guilty in Sunshine Magistrates Court of assault and resisting police, but a charge of assaulting the sergeant was dismissed. Mr Djime has appealed the findings. Most of his claims at VCAT were lodged under the Equal Opportunity Act. But Victoria Police sought to have the majority dismissed on the grounds they did not relate to provision of a service so could not be assessed under that act. VCAT member Anna Dea agreed, dismissing 21 of the 27 allegations but ordering a further hearing on the remaining six at a later date.

Greek crisis hits home By Goya Dmytryshchak Members of Hobsons Bay’s Greek Orthodox community are praying for their loved ones affected by the Greek debt crisis. The Greek government has to decide this week on whether to support economic reforms to secure a further European bailout. George Said, a life member of the Greek Orthodox Community of Hobsons Bay Inc, said many Australian Greeks felt like powerless spectators as they watched people suffering in their debt-stricken homeland. “We have family in Athens, an elderly sister-in-law,” he said. “Our sister-in-law is worried about her pension but has not had a cut yet. She thinks it’s imminent. “She doesn’t have heating for the coming winter. Her son and grandson have been unemployed for years and can only find occasional jobs. “Poverty is widespread and is getting worse,” he said. “However, there are those in tourist destinations who get work and survive.” Reverend George Frangos, of the Greek Orthodox Parish in Altona North, returned from visiting family in Greece two weeks ago. “Seeing it first hand, my family’s not that much affected, only because the issue really only exists in the big cities,” he said. “Anything outside the big cities – the islands and the villages – they tend to be self-sufficient, almost like they have their own micro-economies or micro-societies. “It’s almost like Victoria going through a recession and Ballarat not feeling it because they’ve got a low unemployment rate.” Father George said the situation was worse for the elderly and for those who relied on face-to-face banking.

“Most of the Greeks in Greece have still got their heads held up high and they’re still continuing on with their daily lives and trying not to pay a lot of attention to it,” he said. “Although the situation has got a little bit worse now with banks closed, and things. “From a Greek community perspective in Australia, we’re all concerned as to what’s going on over there. “For the migrants here in Australia, it tends to hurt them a little bit more because they don’t

like seeing their homeland portrayed in such a way, or they don’t want to see their loved ones suffering and going through certain things. “Everybody’s got an opinion, political opinions and things like that, but at the end of the day that’s all politics,” he said. “It’s all about the people and what the people are going through. “We do have grave concerns for the people over there and we try to be as hopeful as possible.”

Town centre on ‘human scale’ An independent planning panel is supporting the development of a new ‘town centre’ near Highpoint, despite ongoing resident protests. As reported by Star Weekly in April, Maribyrnong council wants to rezone industrial and commercial land around Highpoint shopping centre to enable its expansion, complete with about 2500 new apartments, over the next 30 years. Amendment C135 paves the way for a new town centre, with a mixed retail, bulky goods and residential precinct along Rosamond Road. It also supports buildings of up to 10 storeys across seven Highpoint Activity Centre precincts, including six-storey to 10-storey buildings along Hampstead, Williamsons, Rosamond and West roads. Residents say the rezoning panders to developers at the expense of current residents. They cite ongoing issues with car parking, building heights, open space and infrastructure, but the planning panel has now lodged its broad support for the amendment with Planning Minister Dick Wynne for final approval. The two-person panel concluded the amendment should go ahead, with modifications. “The development of street walls, generally around six storeys, with buildings of around 10 storeys to their rear, should allow a sense of human scale and facilitate activity on the streets,” the panel noted. Seniors mourn veteran pilot By Goya Dmytyshchak Altona Senior Citizens Club is in shock after a former president died in a light plane crash last week. Ron Stares, 85, of Altona North, died when his kit-built Sonnex aircraft crashed soon after take-off at Lethbridge Airpark, about 100 kilometres west of Melbourne, on Wednesday. Emergency services were called to the Midland Highway about midday after the plane nose-dived from a height of just six metres. Police said it appeared the plane experienced difficulties in landing and the cause was yet to be determined.

A doctor who witnessed the crash said Mr Stares appeared to slump over the controls just before the crash. Airport owner Garry Baum, who tried to

resuscitate Mr Stares, said early indications pointed to some kind of medical condition as a cause of the crash. “To fly the plane he was flying, a two-seat recreational aircraft – and it’s different to your general aviation aircraft – you have to have a check every two years to make sure you’re up to speed in flying,” Mr Baum said. “You have to do that with a chief flying instructor. “[Mr Stares] did that some three months earlier and passed. “Because of his age, he would’ve had to have a medical done at the doctor. He passed that and everything was OK. But he had a heart

operation about six years ago and . . . if you’re legal to drive a motor car, that’s medically good enough to do your plane licence. “He had been here about six years. It was the third plane he’d had at the airfield and before that he used to hire planes. Then he decided to buy and own his own.” Mr Stares’ partner of about 15 years, Irene, witnessed the crash. The pair met through the Altona Senior Citizens’ Club where they attended ballroom dancing classes. Mr Stares drove the club’s mini-bus and called the numbers in bingo sessions. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the crash.

Record effort spills over With a lot of help from Altona Green Primary School, a filmmaker has attempted to set a Tropfest record for the most child extras in a movie scene. Writer and director Aaron Lester Ellis says his record-attempting Tropfest 2015 short film, Spill, is about primary school bullying. The film is based on events that happened to him in exactly the same schoolground 15 years ago. “It was shot locally at Altona Green Primary School thanks to principal Karen O’Dowd who was the principal when the actual event happened all those years ago,” the 25-year-old Altona Meadows resident said. “Over 60 child actors and their very patient parents volunteered to help make this happen.”

The extras record attempt was filmed this month using a drone that gave a bird’s-eye view of nearly the whole schoolground in Altona. “We are proud to say that the team at Coptercam, who are responsible for all the aerial drone work on recent Aussie smash-hit feature film Paper Planes, offered their services on our film,” Mr Ellis said. His cousin, Lester Ellis jnr of Ja’mie: Private School Girl and Underbelly fame, is a producer on the film. Spill wrapped this month and will be released at Tropfest in December. Victoria University will fund two projects with more than $500,000 in new grants from the Australian Research Council’s Linkage Projects scheme. A $295,000 grant will support a $450,000 project to improve access to electronic health data for medical researchers, while $209,000 will go to a long-term study tracking students through their final years of high school to measure the performance of the education system.

Clergy teacher to be sentenced A Catholic brother who sexually abused two girls and a boy while he was a teacher at Altona North will remain a member of the clergy. Bernard Joseph Hartman, 75, a former biology teacher at St Paul’s College in Altona North, attended a pre-sentencing hearing last week in relation to historical sexual abuse complaints made against him by one former student at the boys’ college and two women whose brothers attended the school. On April 15, Hartman pleaded guilty in the County Court to four counts of indecent assault, including vaginal penetration of two girls, aged eight to 11, in 1981 and 1982. On May 1, a jury found Hartman guilty of one count of indecent assault and two of common law assault against a man, now 49, who was his student in years 10 and 11 in 1981 and 1982. At a separate trial by jury in May, Hartman was found not guilty of indecent assault against another former student. Hartman is a brother of the Marianist religious order and has been living with another brother in St Albans since being extradited from the US to face charges in September 2013. Father Martin Solma, Provincial of the Marianist Province of the US, said Hartman would remain a brother in the religious order. “Unlike a diocese where a priest is in service of the bishop, members of religious congregations belong to a ‘family’,” he said. “If a member of a family commits a crime, even a serious one,

he or she does not stop being a member of the family.” He said Hartman had been under a strict ‘safety plan’ and constantly supervised since the order was first informed of the abuse. “This is a safer situation for the public than making abusers leave the religious order and having them live on their own and unsupervised,” Father Solma said. “Our primary concern is protecting children and caring for, supervising and monitoring offenders. “Since 1997, Hartman has had no public ministry and no access where he could abuse again.” David Clohessy, national director of SNAP [Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests] in the US, said the Marianists were among the “most secretive and irresponsible institutions” encountered in the network’s 26-year history. “Like many Catholic groups, Marianists refuse to discipline those who commit or conceal child sex crimes,” he said. “Marianists also claim to ‘monitor’ predators when in fact they rarely do,” Mr Clohessy said. Hartman is due to be sentenced on July 24.

Tree day unites ‘friends’ Filipino activists will join a local environmental group for a planting event at Newport on National Tree Day. Friends of Greenwich Bay will plant grasses at the Sandy Point Wildlife Reserve, at the northern end of the Strand, next Sunday. Member Jill Hocking said the friends group would be joined by members of the Filipino group Triskelions. “Triskelions began in the Philippines in the 1960s as an anti-violence, anti-elitist student movement opposed to the martial law regime of President Ferdinand Marcos,” she said. “The group believes in making a difference to communities and last year it took part in the

Briefs Cash boost for puppet people

Footscray-based giant-puppet company Snuff Puppets has been granted $35,000 by the state government towards a two-week community workshop with artists and the community in Penang, Malaysia. It will culminate in a giant-puppet performance as part of next month’s Penang George Town Festival. An $8000 grant, also from the government, will help the Click Clack Project’s Amplified Elephants, an ensemble of sound artists with an intellectual disability, undertake three days of recording, mixing and mastering in Tokyo with Japan-based sound artists Cal Lyall and Pardon Kimura.

The Way & Works Workshop at 561-569 Melbourne Road is the last remaining building of the former Spotswood Railway Workshops complex. The 2006 Hobsons Bay heritage study classifies the building as having local historic, social and aesthetic significance because of its connection with the Victorian Railways and what was once a major employer. A Facebook page titled Spotswood Railway Workshops Community space was launched last week and has more than 90 members. Michelle Fisher, who started the page, was involved in a recent campaign to save Footscray’s Dancing Dog Cafe from development. She said many people had put forward an idea to create a community space similar to the CERES environmental park on four hectares of rehabilitated landfill in East Brunswick. “A lot of people have been putting forward a ‘CERES of the west’ idea . . . a community space where you can do workshops, or you could have a nursery and farming, education and sustainability and all that sort of stuff,” she said. Ms Fisher said she had approached the owner of the property, VicTrack, and was told the building was available to buy or lease. VicTrack’s property group sent Ms Fisher an email asking her to circle the areas of interest and submit an application for lease or purchase. But when told of the community campaign, VicTrack spokesman Jason Murray said the workshop was not available for the community. “Given its historical industrial use, the site is not in a suitable state for community use,” he told Star Weekly. “The land, strategically located

Cash aid for sex assault victims By Benjamin Millar Sexual assault services are celebrating a $375,000 windfall to help more children and adults in the west access counselling and support. State Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos will announce today that the Footscray-based Western Regional Centre Against Sexual Assault (WestCASA), the Royal Women’s Hospital Centre Against Sexual Assault and the Royal Children’s Hospital will each receive up to $125,000 for extra staff to support victims and address

trauma caused by sexual abuse. The funding follows a doubling of sexual offences reported to police in Hobsons Bay in the year to March – from 85 to 167 – and a rise from 115 to 129 in Maribyrnong. WestCASA chief executive Jane Vanderstoel told Star Weekly the money would help the service cut its lengthy waiting list. “We have had a real rise in demand,” she said. “We’ve had double the number of people looking for our services in the past six to eight weeks. The current waiting list is about five months. I’d hope an extra person would bring that down.”

Ms Vanderstoel said a range of factors, including the Royal Commission on Institutional Childhood Sexual Abuse, seemed to have encouraged more people to speak out. While more people coming forward has been welcomed, it also places extra pressure on already-strained services. “I think it’s really disappointing for people when they have the courage to call us and we have to ask them to wait,” she said. “The downside of this funding is that it’s for only 12 months. “We hope that after the royal commission

into family violence there will be ongoing funding.” Ms Mikakos said the new funding was part of a $81.3 million package to boost family violence services. “Counselling services are an important part of addressing the trauma inflicted by shocking abuse,” she said. “We know how difficult it can be for victims of child sexual abuse to come forward for help. The opening of George Calombaris’s Hellenic Republic restaurant in Williamstown has been delayed. The MasterChef star had hoped to open in December on the site of the former Hobsons Bay Hotel, which he and his partners in restaurant group Made Establishment bought for $3 million in 2013. Made Establishment public relations manager Lauren Calleja said the restaurant was set to open next year. “We had a meeting this week to go through some plans and menu ideas,” she said. “We hope we’re on our home stretch and will be open in the first half of next year. We had hoped to open before Christmas, but it’s just not do-able with the plans and builders, unfortunately. “We had some delays with building and obviously we want to try and keep a bit of the

Artwork tribute to Billy the kid By Benjamin Millar The memory of a Kingsville boy who drowned 75 years ago this month lives on in a prominent local artwork. William “Billy” Broadway left his Somerville Road home on July 4, 1940, never to return. The five-year-old was found drowned in one of the area’s many local quarries. Kingsville resident and former Footscray councillor Bill Hodgart, who was 11 at the time, said he remembered seeing Billy riding his tricycle at Somerville Road. “I’d see him sit outside the shop when I went to school,” he said. “His aunty and uncle were bakers and they lived behind our place. “There was some excitement around, people were saying ‘Billy’s missing’ and people were looking around in the dark, flashing lights across the open paddocks.” Keen to see Billy’s life remembered, Mr Hodgart commissioned a local stonemason to create a granite plaque about seven years ago in the hope it could be permanently placed near the site of the drowning. He passed the plaque on to Maribyrnong councillor Michael Clarke and hopes it will see the light again. Mario and Delanie Varricchio, who run the happymaree cafe in what was once a barber shop and Billy’s home, wanted to pay tribute to his memory after hearing the story from Mr Hodgart. Mr Varricchio said they arranged for Yarraville street artist Heesco to paint Billy into a mural on the roller door at the front of their cafe. “Bill came in when we were opening and told us the whole story,” he said. “We were getting artist friends to paint the roller doors and when they asked if we had

any ideas I said we had this idea about Billy Broadway.” Billy’s story continued to resonate with the couple, who set about tracking down his grave. After hours of searching at Footscray cemetery, they stumbled across his headstone. Mr Varricchio said a few strange things occurred in Billy’s former home on the July 4 anniversary of the drowning, including a glass that suddenly shattered and a pair of tongs “flying off the wall”. “The next challenge is to find some family members,” he said. “And I’d love to try to find a photo of Billy.”

Local residents stormed Williamstown council on Monday in a bid to stop it approving a permit to build a 14-metre chimney at a Spotswood carpet underlay business. The residents accused the council of trying to push through a permit for the Blackshaws Road factory, La Foam, to build the chimney without first advertising it. The company, which has been the subject of numerous court actions and resident petitions, was fined $300 in Williamstown Court last month for failing to fulfil its EPA licensing conditions.

Laverton resident and former Werribee councillor Stuart Southwick said Laverton’s main shopping strip, Aviation Road, was a disgrace. “It’s dirty, rotting stinking rubbish from end to end,” he said.

Family violence education in Victorian schools could become law after six Hobsons Bay students passed a bill in Youth Parliament to put the issue on the curriculum. Youth Affairs Minister Jenny Mikakos will present the bill to the relevant government minister for consideration. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan, who was the speaker during Youth Parliament, discussed the issue with Hobsons Bay’s team members Gabi Duke, 16, Hue Man Dang, 17, Jes Evans, 16, Emma Jansen, 17, Will McKenzie, 16 and Jonathan Sahhar, 17. Hue Man, Hobsons Bay’s Young Citizen of the Year and a student at Bayside College, delivered a speech in Youth Parliament urging people to redress social attitudes that underpin family violence.

“Our Watch, an anti-violence group, found that one in four young men believe that violence against women is normal,” she said. She said young people needed to be aware of what healthy relationships looked like and where to get help. “Students need to know that the victims of domestic abuse are not the ones to be blamed,” Hue Man said. “Although many organisations have raised awareness about domestic violence, I think by having it embedded in our school curriculum we can send a firm message that ‘we will not excuse abuse’.” Anyone experiencing family violence can call 1800 RESPECT. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds great food at a fair price – and linen serviettes Given the number of budget-priced eateries Consider The Sauce tries, it’s hardly surprising that when it comes to rotis we sometimes get less than we hope for. Specifically, it’s sometimes plain that the rotis we get are store-bought. When they’re otherwise – when they’re made fresh and in-house – our delight is all the more. That’s what we get at Curry Leaves, a newish Sri Lankan restaurant in Sunshine. The outstanding rotis are just one of several high points of a tremendous meal. Curry Leaves is a nicely appointed eatery right on Ballarat Road and right next door to a discount grocery outfit. It’s a pleasant space to be in on a cold night, waiting as the traffic whizzes by. It’s not often we eat in an establishment that uses real linen serviettes, especially not at the prices we’re about to pay. We’re told that later in the week and at the weekend, when there’s a buffet available, the place is “packed”. Early in the week, we’re the only eat-in customers but there’s steady takeaway business coming and going. There’s much to ponder in the longish menu – what Bennie and I share is just a beginning, we reckon, of our relationship with Curry Leaves. Our fabulous rotis come as part of the special roti meal ($11.90) that includes two “godamba roti”, one “egg godamba roti”, dal and beef curry.

The dal is simple and delicious – mildly spiced, sweetish. The curry is quite a bit spicier but the meat itself is very good and tender. Our other board serving is the string hopper meal deal ($12.90) of string hoppers, beef curry, the same dal and pol (coconut sambol). The string hoppers are super fresh and dainty and splendid for soaking up the gravy juices. As instructed, we use our right hands to mix and mop the curry and dal and coconut sambol, doing the best we can based on our greater experience with injera. We get messy but have an all-round, lip-smacking good time. As we’d ordered chicken but got beef by mistake, a serve of chicken curry is also brought. The string hopper meal deal is topped price-wise on the menu only by the banana leaf-wrapped lamprais ($14.90), which we only bypass on account of the listed 30-minute wait.

Cruel cold grounds Jets By Lance Jenkinson Bitterly cold winds were followed by an unrelenting downpour on Sunday, conditions not felt by Melburnians for some time. Burbank Oval turned from a slippery football field to a swimming pool on the back of the changing conditions. The phone line went dead for Jets coach Torin Baker as water seeped into the system, and he was unable to communicate with his bench. The statisticians were not spared either, with the fading light making it near impossible to see the action, so players may have to live without an extra handball or kick on the stat sheet. The Western Jets froze in the conditions, finishing with a meagre two behinds for the game. But it would be unfair to dust off the record books for lowest scores in the TAC Cup – the last two quarters of the match were shortened for player safety, as lips turned blue in antarctic-like weather. The only indestructible force on the day seemed to be Calder Cannons, heading home with a 72-point win. To the Cannons, Baker could only “give credit where it’s due”. “They executed really well, and they were just too strong and too good in the contest,” he told Star Weekly. The Cannons stole the show. Players shot out of the blocks in the first term to boot seven goals, holding the Jets scoreless. Baker did not hide from the fact his side was not good enough in early exchanges. “The Cannons were really good in the first quarter and they played the conditions a lot better than us,” he said. “They won the clearances; we gave away a couple of cheap frees in front of goals; it was just a really poor first quarter from us. “We didn’t handle the conditions at all and that was the ball game really.” From that point on, the game would turn into one of the more remarkable days of football these young players will experience in their careers. Sure, the Jets only managed to trouble the scorers twice and both were behinds, but the Cannons only managed three goals in three quarters, after seven in the first, which underlines the havoc the conditions played with the flow of this game. “It was unbelievable; it just rained so much throughout the day, it was terrible,” Baker said. “A lot of the ground was under water by the end of the game, so it was hard for any team to score. “We had a lot of the ball inside our forward half in the second quarter, and couldn’t score. “It got to a stage where we shortened the last two quarters because of the health and safety of the players,” Baker said. “It was one of those freakish days of footy and I don’t think I’ve experienced one like it in my footy career.” And if Mother Nature wasn’t kind to the

am all for drug testing coming to local football and sports clubs as long as it’s for the right, non-political reasons. We need to create familyfriendly clubs that our sons and daughters are comfortable in and which parents trust as a safe environment for their children. There is no place for drugs of any kind in that scenario. The AFL is going to reset its drug policy and it needs to ensure that every local junior and senior club signs off on the new policy. Football needs to make sure there are no grey areas, from Auskick to AFL seniors. One in, all in. The sooner this is all sorted the better it will be for the game, the players, the parents and everyone involved.

about two different emotions in football. Last week, I watched Werribee lose its game against Geelong in the VFL on the siren. Then I saw the Bulldogs run over the Gold Coast Suns. What a great thing it is to follow and be involved in a sporting club. Earlier in the day, I watched the Wyndham Suns beat Tarneit in the WRFL 3rd division, and that was a treat, even though temperatures were arctic. It wasn’t about how much money players were getting paid, it was about wearing the jumper and having a go. The Suns won, so did the Bulldogs and the Cats, and I’m sure every player, coach, official and fan felt exactly the same emotion after the game.

The international flavour of Darryl Roach and the home-grown product of Alex Dimitrijevic combined in the middle of the park for the Blues to run rings around the visiting Zebras. “We dominated them in the middle,” Blues team manager Henrik Nielsen told Star Weekly. “They were on their heels most of the game.” Roach, a former Port Melbourne Sharks player, has appeared at the highest level of football for Montserrat, a nation from the CONCACAF region, which has risen to as high as 165th on the FIFA world rankings. Altona Gators have three games in the next two weeks to avoid a winless season in the Big V basketball men’s division 1. The Gators sank to a 0-19 record with losses against Melbourne University (104-75) and Melton (91-75) in last weekend’s double header. The next chance for the Gators to break the drought will come against second-last Mildura Heat at Altona Sports Centre on Sunday. Meanwhile, Gators youngsters Cassidy Gould and Eleanor Leydin underlined their potential, playing for bronze medal winners Vic Metro at the under-16 Australian junior championships.

Newport Rams have appointed Matthew Lawman as head coach for the 2015-16 Baseball Victoria season. Lawman, a former VIS athlete, has played abroad in the US minor leagues with the Minnesota Twins organisation, as well as Austria and the Czech Republic. Warriors wipe up Woodsmen Spotswood’s double chance hopes received a battering in a 53-point loss to Hoppers Crossing in division 1 of the Western Region Football League at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday. The Woodsmen are a game and percentage out of second spot and their own third position on the ladder, which also comes with a finals double shot, remains shaky. The signs were poor for the Woodsmen early in the blockbuster game as the Warriors piled on four goals to zip in the first term to lead by 29 at quarter-time. The Woodsmen found a way back into the

contest in the second quarter when captain Tom Langlands, onballer David Iaccarino and utility Murray Boyd began to assert their influence over the contest to trim the deficit to 16 by half-time. But the Warriors pounded the Woodsmen in a nine-goals-to-three second half. The Warriors are now clear second favourites in the premiership race, while the Woodsmen are fighting to preserve their top-three status. The Woodsmen will be looking to bounce back when they host second-last Albion at McLean Reserve on Saturday.

Altona has climbed up to fifth spot with a 119-point annihilation of Port Melbourne Colts at Murphy Reserve.
