Williamstown water police have urged people to learn from the boating tragedy that claimed the lives of three fishermen on Port Phillip Bay. On Monday afternoon, the mood was bleak at Altona boat ramp as news trickled in that a third body had been found after the three men went missing on Sunday. Steven Do, 30, his brother David, 31, and their friend, Phong Nguyen, 35, all from Sunshine West, had launched their tinny from Altona about 11am on Sunday. Senior Sergeant Mark O’Rourke said the trio bought their small aluminium punt five months ago and were inexperienced. “I think, essentially, it’s just they’ve gone out in really ordinary conditions in a boat that wasn’t suitable in those conditions,” he said. “This time of year, your timeframe for survival in the water, being 13 degrees, is not very long.” Seaholme Boat Owners Association member Ramon Harris described Sunday’s conditions on the bay as “treacherous”. Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Dean Stewart said the average wind speed was about 30 knots, or 55km/h, and waves would have been up to 1.5 metres overnight. It was not until a fisherman spotted the trio’s upturned boat about 4pm on Sunday that the men’s family members and police realised something was amiss. Four Coast Guard boats, a police boat, a helicopter and search and rescue squad divers trawled a 120-square-nautical-mile area for the three men, while family members kept a vigil at Altona boat ramp. Julie Lieu, the girlfriend of Steven Do, said the men “always enjoyed fishing” together. “Life isn’t meant to be fair,” she said. One man’s body was found about 10am on Monday, nine kilometres south-east of where the upturned boat was found on Sunday afternoon. The body of the second fisherman was found about two hours later, about four kilometres south of the first. The third body was located about 2.30pm, about a kilometre north of where the second body was located. According to police, the men were wearing lifejackets. Senior Sergeant O’Rourke said there were no restrictions on that type of boat being in the bay, but this one had been more suited to inland waterways.

Opposition mounts as VU turns away from west Victoria University is defending its possible takeover of a campus in Melbourne’s outer-east while cutting courses, closing campuses and shedding jobs in the western suburbs. VU has set aside $3 million to investigate taking over Monash University’s Berwick campus, despite withdrawing from campuses such as Melton and Sunbury in Melbourne’s rapidly growing west. The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) has questioned VU’s priorities, yet the university’s management insists the “short-term pain” is necessary to see VU
“better positioned in the competitive tertiary education marketplace”. The situation coincides with an auditorgeneral’s report showing the cut-ravaged university last year lost millions of dollars. VU’s operating budget to the end of 2014 was $423.7 million, with almost $16.8 million in savings from redundancies but with a $16 million operating deficit. A VU spokeswoman said the university had incurred significant restructuring costs while making “radical but necessary changes”, such as cutting staff, in a move to improve cash-flow
and remove debt. NTEU VU president Paul Adams accepts VU has been heavily hit by massive funding cuts but questions the decision to cut staff and close campuses while looking to expand into the outer east. “It looks to us as if money is being taken out of the western suburbs and going into the eastern suburbs,” he said. “We think this is a misguided initiative.” Mr Adams said the possible Berwick move contrasted with up to 80 further staff still to be cut from the university. He said the Victoria University Act required the university “to develop and provide educational, cultural,
professional, technical and vocational services and, in particular, to foster participation in post-secondary education for persons living or working in the western metropolitan region of Melbourne.” The VU spokeswoman said the university was investing $58 million predominantly into western campuses. “We have plans to see old and under-used buildings, like the Melton and Sunbury campuses, substituted by new learning links – modern, collaborative spaces.” Benjamin Millar

Valé, favourite daughter By Goya Dmytryshchak Emotional mourners broke into song and laughter during Friday’s state funeral for Joan Kirner, Williamstown’s “favourite daughter”. Victoria’s only female premier was farewelled in a moving service at Williamstown Town Hall. Caroline Hogg, a minister in the Kirner government, performed a reading from Shakespeare’s Cymbeline and described Ms Kirner as “the bravest woman I ever knew”. Cousin Max Cole recalled that even as a child Ms Kirner had been committed to justice. “When we were young kids, Joan’s dog got caught by the Essendon council dog-catcher,” Dr Cole said. “We crept up to the dog cart while the dog-catcher was chasing another dog down
the street and opened the door. We and five dogs ran for our lives”. Former Labor state secretary Jenny Beacham recalled Ms Kirner’s ability to empower others. “She made us believe in ourselves and you could do anything after talking to her,” she said. Former Labor MP Candy Broad said Ms Kirner “was tireless in promoting women and community whenever, wherever she could”. “She could be stubborn, wilful and downright unreasonable in her pursuit of these goals, but we are all better off because of that determination,” she said. Yorta Yorta Aboriginal leader Paul Briggs said Ms Kirner was troubled by the poverty and injustice a section of her community was suffering. Noting that Ms Kirner was an Essendon fan, he recalled a couple of Aboriginal
women humorously vowing to put a curse on John Elliot and the Carlton Football Club. “Although John Elliot is no longer president of the Blues, you may argue the curse is still effective,” he said. The funeral was attended by present and past premiers including Daniel Andrews, John Cain, Steve Bracks, Ted Baillieu and Jeff Kennett, as well as Opposition leader Matthew Guy and federal Opposition leader Bill Shorten. As Ms Kirner’s pallbearers started to leave, loudspeakers played Paul Kelly’s From little things big things grow grow. Mourners slowly streamed out, crying and singing. A public spat between two Maribyrnong councillors has escalated with tit-for-tat accusations of petulance and fabrication. Star Weekly last week reported claims by Cr Catherine Cumming that she only apologised for implying Cr Michael Clarke was racist to save ratepayers $20,000 in tribunal costs. But Cr Clarke has labelled the suggestion “a complete and utter fabrication” that ignores her role in racking up a $15,000 bill on mediation. “While Cr Cumming’s apology to me was heartfelt, her subsequent description of the circumstances around her actions is a very poor commentary on this councillor’s character,” he said. “I feel like a victim being told that they deserved the abuse. Her words were hurtful and untrue.” Cr Cumming apologised at a recent council meeting for telling Cr Clarke last October he could be seen as racist over his decision to nominate fellow Labor councillor Martin Zakharov as mayor, rather than backing Cr Nam Quach, who has Vietnamese heritage. Cr Clarke said the “tirade” occurred at a mayoral function in front of Cr Martin Zakharov and a council officer and within earshot of the public. Yet Cr Cumming maintains the conversation was private and could not have been overheard. She said she bore no responsibility for the $15,000 bill as she should never have had to apologise because it was what she truly felt. Cr Clarke labelled her claim that she only apologised to save ratepayers money as “an absolute joke”. Maribyrnong council would not release any details or costs relating to councillor mediation. By Benjamin Millar An Altona Meadows couple who racked up a $7.7 million debt on a loan secured against their home and a Footscray pizza shop have had their repayments slashed after a court found the wife’s signature on the mortgage documents had been forged. Titles Strata Management pursued action against Frank and Luisa Nirta for failing to pay back $635,437 lent to pay off an earlier $450,000 loan that was in default. The Supreme Court of Victoria heard Mr Nirta told his wife he drew the first loan to help associates invest in a Northern Territory camel farm but he told the court the funds were to be used to buy an abattoir in regional NSW. The second two-month loan was secured in August, 2011, by mortgages over Domenico’s Pizza and Pasta Restaurant in Barkly Street, Footscray, and the couple’s Altona Meadows home. Interest was charged monthly at eight per cent, the debt reaching $7.75 million by the time of trial and climbing rapidly. Yet Mrs Nirta, representing herself, told the court she had known nothing about the loan and someone had forged her signatures on the loan agreement, the two mortgages and other loan documents. She denied meeting in an Altona cafe with Keith William Blackney, the broker who arranged the second loan and who witnessed the signatures. She was adamant that she would never have put the security of the home in jeopardy as she could not contemplate moving her severely disabled son.
Victoria Associate Justice Melissa Daly said there was a “murky aura surrounding this series of transactions”. “Overall, my conclusion is that if she is a liar, she is an exceptionally talented liar,” she said of Mrs Nirta. “I do not believe that she is sufficiently cunning and devious to maintain such a charade over such a long period of time and in such circumstances.” She also found much of Mr Nirta’s evidence lacked credibility.

“Mr Nirta’s role in this whole transaction is, of course, the elephant in the room … it is quite possible that the forgery of Mrs Nirta’s signature was done by him, or by another at his request or with his connivance. However, on the state of the evidence I cannot make any conclusive findings about Mr Nirta’s role.” Associate Justice Daly judged the unregistered mortgage over the home to be void but that the Footscray pizza shop should be sold to recover the amount loaned by Titles Strata as it was unaware there had been any fraud. The eight per cent monthly interest rate was found to be unjustifiable and the statutory interest rate was instead set to have applied from 24 November 2011, the date that Titles Strata made a demand for payment.

Forged papers cut $7.7m debt

Andy’s wistful look back Popular children’s author Andy Griffith is selling the Williamstown seaside house that has been an inspiration for his recent writing. Griffith, author of the Just! books and The Day My Bum Went Psycho, said his four-level home at 2/113 Esplanade had provided inspiration for his current Treehouse series, co-written and edited with wife Jill and illustrated by Terry Denton. “We’d all be sitting there … just looking out at the world from that beautiful second-floor aspect so it felt like we were in a treehouse,” Griffith said. “We were involved in a make-believe game … creating the books, looking out of our treehouse. It made me feel like I was 10 years old in my cousin’s treehouse. You don’t come that far, really, from your childhood.”
The 52-Storey Treehouse was named ‘book of the year’ in the 2015 Australian Book Industry Awards and was Australia’s best-selling book in 2014. The Esplanade house is listed for auction on June 13 at 11am with an asking price of $1.4-1.5 million. “It’s a unique property … when we saw it we just went, ‘this is amazing’,” Griffith said. “We can work at home and yet the whole world is right there. You feel like you’re locked away somewhere.” Griffith is moving to a new home in the Williamstown area. Champ trawls web for backers Brooklyn’s Lachlan Mackinnon has been selected to represent Australia in lacrosse at September’s world championships in the United States. But as a minor sport in Australia, with limited government funding, selection places a heavy burden on players, who have to pay their own way to the world titles. Mackinnon, 24, was among 23 players selected for the Australian men’s indoor lacrosse team to compete in the FIL men’s world indoor lacrosse championships in Syracuse, New York, from September 18-27. Mackinnon started in the sport aged four and now plays with Altona Lacrosse. For the past two years, he has undergone a rigorous selection process involving training camps and national competitions. Mackinnon said the Australian Lacrosse Association received no government funding for high performance and only limited commercial sponsorship. So he has created a gofundme page to help raise money towards his American dream of Australian gold. The lacrosse world championships are held every four years. The name of late former premier Joan Kirner has been dragged in to a long-running dispute over whether to convert the disused ladies bowling area on Williamstown’s Dennis Reserve into open space or tennis courts. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, a report to Hobsons Bay council recommended the area be used for two more tennis courts funded by Williamstown Central Tennis Club. But Bonnie Gelman and Rob Lucas, who in 2013 collected about 170 signatures on a petition calling for the bowling green to become public open space, wrote to councillors last week saying a private donor had offered to contribute funds if the space could be called Joan Kirner Garden. “Joan was an environmentalist and keen advocate of the idea of community ownership – that we should all feel part of the public space,” they said. Williamstown Central Tennis Club president Michael Greaves said Ms Kirner could be honoured in any number of ways. “You could call them the Joan Kirner tennis courts if you wanted to,” he said. “That’s neither here nor there. “We could get lots of signatures to say that they would prefer tennis courts. “Tennis has absolutely boomed in this area in the last five, six, seven years and I don’t understand why people keep saying there are enough tennis courts when we’re struggling to get enough for juniors in night competition.” Hobsons Bay mayor Colleen Gates said Ms Kirner was a valued and much-loved resident of Williamstown. “She gave so much to the local community,” she said. “It would be wonderful to be able to remember her significant contribution in an appropriate way.”

Women in the west are being urged to share their creativity as part of the latest zine by Females for Equality Making Stuff (FEMS). The brainchild of Freya Alexander, Cassandra Martin and Tegan Iversen, FEMS launched its first zine in March at an art exhibition in Maidstone. Ms Alexander says the second edition will be based loosely around the theme of Diversity, chosen for a variety of reasons. “One reason is that when we started we weren’t a particularly diverse group because it was mostly Victorian College of the Arts students or Melbourne University students – very white, mostly heterosexual, so not super-diverse,” she said. “I think already that’s beginning to change … we’ve got a much more interesting range of people involved.”
Ms Martin said the theme also aimed to encourage a conversation around a broader range of topics. “There are so many different experiences women have and those things are influenced by other things, like race or age or disability, so it’s just trying to broaden out,” she said. “The zine has certainly generated a lot of conversations.” Ms Iversen said the project had attracted interest from people with written works, and FEMS would like to receive more pictorial submissions or a combination of both. Six Monterey cypress saplings in Williamstown Botanic Gardens have been vandalised every week for a month, with the tops of the trees apparently snapped off to stop them growing. The trees had been planted 14 months ago to replace six others that had reached the end of their lives. A phased removal plan over a 15- to 25-year period has been drawn up for replacing dying trees with saplings of the same species. Anyone with information about tree vandalism is being urged to report it to Hobsons Bay council on 9932 1000.

Cash drying up for mums in need By Benjamin Millar Pregnant women and new mothers at risk of depression and anxiety could “fall through the cracks” when funding runs out this month on a successful Sunshine Hospital program. The two-year Perinatal Emotional Health program was funded in 2013 as part of the Victorian government’s commitment to the National Prenatal Depression Initiative. The initiative is aimed at improving early detection of mental health issues around childbirth, and supporting and treating expectant and new mothers of Melbourne’s west who are
experiencing feelings of sadness and anxiety. Yet, despite the pilot program’s success, it will cease within weeks as funding dries up. In an address last week to a Melbourne Health Research Week forum, program manager Frances Bilbao noted that one in 10 women experienced depression in pregnancy, and anxiety rates were even higher. She said time pressures and a lack of training made screening impractical at a busy hospital like Sunshine, which last year recorded about 5500 births and was expected to reach 7200 births within a decade. Midwives reported the program helped
identify women who need extra help. Of the 2286 screenings, 403 (18 per cent) returned positive symptoms of depression or anxiety and felt unable to cope. NorthWestern Mental Health executive director Ruth Vine said the program was very successful despite having been in operation for a short time. “There remains a real need to embed and grow services to meet the needs of a complex community, including a diverse ethnic mix, many new arrivals, and new mothers with substance abuse problems and pre-existing mental health problems,” she said.
Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the western suburbs couldn’t afford to lose such a vital program. “We know women’s mental health is particularly vulnerable in the months before and after birth, so it’s critical the government make this an ongoing program,” she said. “There are limited alternative support services available to women if this program ends. Cuts hit war on violence Services tackling family violence in the western suburbs face an uphill battle in the face of crippling funding cuts, a forum has heard. The Family Violence Forum in Footscray last Wednesday, organised by St Albans MP Natalie Suleyman and Footscray MP Marsha Thomson, aired a number of frustrations hampering service providers and police. It coincided with a record number of police referrals of family violence cases to Footscray-based Women’s Health West, 7629 in the past 11 months or almost one every hour. The forum heard of women’s reluctance to report intervention order breaches and their inability to leave abusive relationships because they were trapped by financial hardship. Prevention of Family Violence Minister Fiona Richardson told the forum the royal commission into Family Violence was a vital step towards achieving a long-term impact.
She said it was crucial to improve the way family violence was measured and to track whether progress was being made. “We need some sort of measure that will tell us how we’re performing, so we’ve come up with the Family Violence Index,” she said. The index will draw together data from the fields of crime, justice, health and education. Victoria Police has announced a $1 million reward for information in a bid to solve a 30-year-old case of a woman last seen at Newport. Debbie Lorraine Bunworth (pictured), then aged 24, was last seen alive at Newport train station on September 6, 1985. Ms Bunworth was a known drug user who frequented the St Kilda area. Police say that at the time of her disappearance she had committed to making a better life for both herself and her 10-year-old daughter and had taken steps to overcome her addiction. A 2003 coronial inquest found Ms Bunworth was a victim of foul play by an unknown assailant(s). Homicide squad detectives recently received information from sources in South Australia which identified a person of interest to the investigation. Commander Doug Fryer said that as a result of that information, investigators travelled to Adelaide last week and spoke to the person. “We believe we are close to solving this investigation, but we just need a little bit more help,” he said. Williamstown’s Helen Smith has been appointed a member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday honours for her service to fencing as an Olympic athlete, coach, mentor and referee. Ms Smith started fencing 48 years ago at age 14, competing at numerous world championships and in Olympic Games at Montreal, Moscow and Los Angeles. She founded the Williamstown Fencing Club in 1976 and was Commonwealth champion in 1978. The former Williamstown High School teacher said the popular appeal of fencing had grown because of shows such as Game of Thrones and Star Wars. She said it appealed to her because it was physically, mentally and psychologically demanding. “It’s like being in a real combat,” Ms Smith said. “There are lots of tactics, a lot of strategy involved, and when you win a bout, or even if you just score hits against someone you know is a superior opponent, it’s very, very rewarding. “Every time you step on the strip you have to dig deep because there’s no one else to fall back on; there’s no other team member there on the piece with you. Ms Smith said she felt very honoured at the recognition. “I’ve almost got tears in my eyes. It’s a great honour; I suppose that’s what it’s meant to be. I guess it’s nice to think I might have done enough to deserve that.” Ms Smith teared up as she acknowledged those who helped her along the way, including her friend, former Premier Joan Kirner. “You don’t get to be recognised and achieve all the things I have without the support of the family, particularly, my husband, my kids, and

EASY VEGAN I have friends coming over for afternoon tea this weekend, at least one of whom is a vegan. Instead of getting in a flap about what I can and can’t serve, I’m taking a very sensible, two-pronged approach. First, I will make a beeline for Absolutely Gluten Free in Watton Street, Werribee, which – apart from gluten-free goodies – also offers a great range of vegan cakes and slices, including vegan cheesecake and caramel slice. Secondly, I’ll throw together some deceptively easy finger food, including these almond-stuffed dates. Simple as they are, they look quite impressive when arranged nicely on a serving platter.

Ingredients: 24 fresh dates 24 blanched almonds
FB: If you could have only one more meal, what would it be? CW: As much seafood as I could fit in – Moreton Bay bugs, scampi, scallops, mussels, crayfish, calamari. Entrée would be a duck parfait with a crusty bread, drizzled in olive oil, and dessert would be cheeses (French).
Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Scatter almonds over a baking tray and bake for six to eight minutes until toasted. Set aside to cool. Using a small, sharp knife, cut a slit in each date. Remove stones. Insert an almond into each date and arrange these on a serving plate.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny and Bennie discover a Hoppers Crossing hideaway ‌ Between and among the culinary richesse of Watton Street at Werribee and Barkly Street at West Footscray, there are lots of Indian or curry restaurants hidden away in all sorts of places. In the case of this Hoppers Crossing find, it’s an offering – ostensibly – of Afghan food. On a cold week night, Woodville Park shopping centre presents a rather bleak prospect, but the glowing lights draw us in. The series of events that have brought us here – post-school volleyball, guitar lesson, traffic congestion – find us also with robust appetites, so we’re happy to be in a warm, cheap eatery. Given the location and lack of research, it’s a throw of the dice, but we are not disappointed. The place is done in typical, basic suburban ethnic, and we’re the only customers. But we are re-assured by the number of locals coming and going for takeaway – there is something worthwhile going on here. While we await our meal, we are greatly entertained, not only by the Bollywood music clips on the telly but even more by the cornball old-school adverts that accompany them. The pricing on the menu is attractive and there’s a range of the usual korma, kofta, vindaloo, masala and other curry dishes. But we choose the breads and kebab offerings. First, though, onion pakoras ($6) are rapidly devoured, a well-fried treat. Potato bolani naan ($5) is fantastic and almost a meal in itself. Garlic naan ($3) shows scant traces of garlic but is good, too.

Phone: 9749 0944 Instead of having to select from the kebab-tandoor line-up, we go straight for the “Sizzler Special� ($22). The menu says it consists of kebab items numbers one through six and comes with salad and dips. We’re not sure about that – and there are no dips. But we’re more than happy anyway. We’re not about to pretend this is the best or best-cooked meat of this kind we’ve had, but it does the job for us. The minced-lamb sheesh kebabs have a bit of a bitter flavour to them. The chunks of lamb kebab could be a bit more tender. But the chicken tikka pieces and two chook parts of tandoori chicken are really good. We’re happy to have paid only $36 for a satisfying meal.

■ Football is a magnificent facilitator at every level of society, sometimes even when it doesn’t want to be. Look at what happened last week, when former Australian of the Year Adam Goodes polarised opinion right across the country with his goal celebration against Carlton. Then there’s the Neale Daniher story, which has brought tears to the eyes of football’s toughest men and united them and others to support a man fighting for his life and the lives of others. In the middle of this is Juddy’s knee, Hird’s future (again) and Rance’s contract – the important and the not-so-important in life’s big picture, but each garnering its share of the spotlight. People love to talk about footy and the people involved. They all want the inside story or claim to know someone who gave them the dirt. It’s mostly harmless. What I do like is the way footy can shape public opinion for the better, like on racism, and when it can help causes like Daniher’s fight against motor neurone disease. ■ Grassroots sport is where it starts for every sportsperson and I don’t think the elite levels are giving this enough time, care and, most importantly, money. Think locally and Brad Johnson started at Hoppers Crossing Football Club, Dougie at Braybrook, Merv Hughes played at Footscray Cricket Club and Fawad Ahmed at Hoppers Crossing. Auskick and the Milo cricket programs are fantastic and I’d like to see them acknowledged more when a player like Bailey Dale debuts at AFL level. His Auskick centre, his junior club and, if applicable, his TAC Cup and school teams should be part of the celebration and they should be part of his profile in the record, club website etc. There was a time when the junior clubs received a financial payment from the AFL, but that’s long gone. A mention should be the least they deserve.

Magic misses a trick Altona Magic missed a chance to make up ground on ladder leader North Sunshine Eagles in men’s state league 1 after the two played a 1-1 draw at Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday evening. The Magic started the day in second place, four points in arrears of the Eagles. But they coughed up second place to Western Suburbs and slid down to third on a day that promised so much but delivered little. It was tough for the Magic from the moment the Eagles hit the back of the net through Adriyan Bektash to take a 1-0 half-time lead. Magic veteran Slave Bozinovski returned fire in the second half to ensure his side earned a share of the points. The Magic will host a huge local derby against Altona East Phoenix at 5.30pm on Saturday. Fifth-placed Phoenix will enter as underdogs, despite picking up four out of a possible six points from their past two games after a 2-2 draw with Westgate on Friday night. In state league 2, Goran Jozeljic continued his fine finishing for Yarraville Glory, but it was
to no avail as his side went down 4-2 to Banyule City at Yallambie Park Reserve. Jozeljic scored both Glory’s goals to make it three in two games. The Glory, five points behind league leaders Moreland United, visit relegation-threatened Westvale on Saturday. In state league 3, Altona City maintained its hot form with a 1-0 win over Lalor United away at Uren Reserve, City’s goal coming from Damir Marusic. City has won four of its last five games to sit clear in second spot and will have a chance to close the gap on ladder leader Hoppers Crossing when they meet in a top-of-the-table blockbuster at Grange Reserve on Saturday. Williamstown suffered its third defeat in succession, 3-1 to North City Wolves at Wallace Reserve. In state league 4, Melbourne City was back to its best in a 5-1 thumping of Keilor Wolves at Edwards Reserve.

Gulls round off milestone day Williamstown made it a milestone to remember for vice-captain Cameron Lockwood’s 100th VFL game. The Seagulls ran all over the Footscray Bulldogs in the western derby to win by 39 points at Whitten Oval on Sunday. Mitch Banner capped a best-on-ground performance for the Seagulls with three goals, while Andrew Gallucci had another impressive display to finish with two. The Seagulls remain on top of the ladder on percentage, level on six wins with Box Hill Hawks and Werribee Tigers. Footscray is way down in seventh and a long way off the form that took it to the premiership last season. Both clubs have a bye this weekend.

Altona Roosters are bogged down in unfamiliar territory in the Victorian Rugby League. The break didn’t come quickly enough for the Roosters, who are well off the pace in second-last position after an ordinary 1-5 start. Roosters coach Brandon Taonoa told Star Weekly a much-needed regeneration of the playing roster was behind a five-game losing streak. “It’s a lack of experience . . . a young team, a lot of young guys,” he said. “I wanted to bring in the youth and that’s why I took over the position. “We have a few old boys there, but they’re all breaking down on me.” The absences of three Bernard brothers – Rick, Justin and Michael – has robbed the Roosters of experience. Rick and Justin are likely to return soon after the break, but Michael will be lost to the sport indefinitely. “It was just a freak accident,” Taonoa said. “He got toppled and hit the goal post head first and fractured two bones in his neck. They reckon he might be able to play in two years.” Despite the unfavourable lopsided win-loss record, the Roosters have at least been competitive in most of their games. They were blown out 76-16 by North West Wolves, but all their other matches have been up for grabs in the second half. Taonoa admits his side is yet to find that winning formula late in games. “These young boys aren’t good under pressure yet,” he said. “When they get under pressure, they lose a bit of confidence.” Hooker Caine Sinclair has been a guiding light for the Roosters. The captain, life member and Victorian representative leads by example in both voice and action. “He’s one of our most experienced guys and he’s trying to nurture the young ones and point them in the right direction,” Taonoa said. Keni Blair has been one of the Roosters’ most consistent players at half back, while centre Nea Vaka is the standout of the younger brigade. The Roosters will chase their second win of the season when they travel to Doveton Steelers on Saturday. “We’ve seen what we’re up against now and we know there are a few things we need to work on,” Taonoa said. “We’re positive and upbeat about the second round of matches.”

Western Jets’ coach Torin Baker had one number on his mind leading into last week’s bye – number 909. That is how many points the TAC Cup side has conceded across the first eight rounds of the season. It’s nearly 100 more than any other side in the competition and a whopping 470 more than top-of-the-table North Ballarat. A leaky defence has cost the Jets the chance of contending for a finals berth this year. After eight games, the team is in 14th spot on the ladder, with just one win. With the youngest list in the TAC Cup competition, Western was always going to struggle against some of its bigger-bodied opposition this year. Baker said the key to improving was to get back to basics. “Initially, we just had some players who didn’t know how to defend,” he said. “We had to teach that and then get stronger around the ball. “Now that we’ve been able to address a couple of key areas, we will look to add some attacking flair and ball movement.” While it’s been a tough first half of the season, signs of improvement have started to signal a possible end to some big early-season losses. The Jets secured their first win of the year, defeating Bendigo last month. Subsequently, the club was also much more competitive in general play against Geelong and Dandenong. Baker is confident that as the little things continue to click, the Jets will feature more regularly on the winners’ list throughout the season’s second half. “It’s just about making sure we can implement all the parts in a game,” he said.

Jackson Volpato: Jackson Volpato has looked right at home on the big stage. Volpato’s efforts should come as no surprise to anyone involved in the competition after the tough midfielder came close to winning the TAC Cup’s best and fairest player award last year as a bottom age player. Volpato went on to finish eighth and has carried the momentum through to this season. He has been named in his side’s best players on six occasions including outright best on ground twice. Jaycob Hickey: After an injury interrupted start to the season, Jaycob Hickey is making up for lost time. Hickey was named among his side’s best players in their only win for the season against Bendigo. The Jets captain was also impressive against the Geelong Falcons two weeks later, winning 21 disposals and kicking a goal. Hickey is a member of the Vic Metro under 18 squad. Daniel Foley: In an inexperienced side, defender Daniel Foley has a tough job trying to restrict the opposition from scoring. However, he has been outstanding. Foley is a member of this year’s Vic Metro squad with his ability to stop his opponent and win the ball a clear highlight.
