Twilight Movies in the Park Friday 12 December, 7.30-10pm Johnson Reserve, Maidstone

The event begins at 6.30pm and offers cool vibes from popular musical acts and an early fireworks display at 9.30pm.

Carols by Candlelight The festive spirit is, among other things, a good time to explore your singing voice. Carolling, the preserve of magpies for the rest of the year, will no doubt be popular among Hobsons Bay residents over the next few weeks. Carols by Candlelight Altona, presented by Altona Laverton Council of Churches, will take place in Altona on Sunday 14 December from 7.30pm at Logan Reserve, moving to St Mary’s Catholic Church, Railway Avenue North in the event of inclement weather.

Pier Street – Stage 3 Council has prepared a draft concept plan for the next stage of improvement works to Pier Street and we invite your feedback on the concept design. The proposed next stage of improvements will include a practical and attractive

Civic Parade – Pier Street roundabout Where would you find fiddlesticks and chalksticks in Altona? Anyone passing through the northern end of Pier Street may have noticed the freshly landscaped roundabout at the Civic Parade intersection. The works were completed on 26 November and landscaped with barrel cacti, geraniums, fiddlesticks (a native grass), and the hardy succulent known as chalksticks.

Greek Church, Millers Road There was, to use a prefix of Greek origin, a mega-crowd at the opening of the Greek Orthodox Church on Sunday 16 November. Many locals turned up to celebrate the completion of the three year construction project on Millers Road, the biggest Greek church in Melbourne’s west.

Rivers to Recognition Rivers to Recognition will have Williamstown flowing with music

on Sunday 7 December with the award-winning artist Archie Roach as well as Radical Son, Frank Yamma, SKIN CHOIR, and Nancy Bates. The idea for the concert, taking place at Commonwealth Reserve, began when a group of local residents, through GetUp OutWest, thought about the concept of a Rock for Recognition concert for the western suburbs. The conversation began and soon Reconciliation Victoria and five other councils were on board.

The aim of the concert is simple: to celebrate good music, to celebrate culture, and to celebrate the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the First Australians. Entry is free and entertainment begins at 1pm.

Vernon Street The tender has now been awarded for construction of shopping strip improvements in Vernon Street, South Kingsville. Improvements will create more generous and attractive pedestrian spaces with all new paving, street furniture, public lighting, garden beds, and tree planting. Road resurfacing and linemarking will also be undertaken to establish a one way street between Brunel and Aloha streets with additional parking. Carols by Candlelight Residents of the Wetlands ward have a choice of three locations if they wish to join the carols this season. Laverton P-12 College, Bladin Street hosts carols from 6.30pm on Sunday 7 December, Laverton Community Hub does the same from 10.30am on Friday 12 December, and Trafalgar Avenue Community Park, Altona Meadows welcomes carollers from 7pm on Sunday 21 December.

Pipeline Reserve, Seabrook Footpath works are no longer just in the pipeline – they’ve begun. Excavation has started along Pipeline Reserve to prepare for the construction of a new path. The

project involves the construction of a new 2.5 metre wide concrete path and this will run along the south side of the reserve.

All things to plan, the shared path should be ready by early December.

Railway Avenue trees We’ve mentioned in previous editions about the need to remove a number of very mature Sugar Gums (Eucalyptus cladocalyx) that have come to the end of their life along Railway Avenue.

Nine trees, located on Railway Avenue between Grace Street and Donald Street, have been indentified for immediate removal with works scheduled to commence on Saturday 13 December.

Bike trail’s reach grows

By Ebru Halimoff The Federation Trail has been extended from Millers Road in Brooklyn to Fogarty Avenue, Yarraville.

VicRoads metropolitan north-west regional director Adam McGuire said the $5.3 million extension, which included a new bridge over the Newport-Albion freight line, bridged the gap for cyclists and pedestrians while reducing travel times and conflict with trucks on local roads.

“The new, 124-metre bridge is wide enough and has ample space in both directions for cyclists and pedestrians to safely pass each other,” he said. “We would like to thank road users for their patience while we closed lanes on the West Gate Freeway to allow for the construction of the overpass and the safety barriers.”

Bicycle Network government and external relations general manager Chris Carpenter said the completion of the trail would benefit locals, cyclists and visitors.

“It’s great news for riders – Bicycle Network has been working with VicRoads since the 1980s on the Federation Trail, so to see it one step closer to completion is exciting for us,” he said.

“It supports our vision – to make bike riding easier for everyone.”

He said the trail connects riders in the south-west suburbs of metropolitan Melbourne and hopefully would encourage them to get active and get on their bikes.

The project was first funded between 2009 and 2010 by the Brumby government.

The next stages of the Federation Trail involve extending it from Fogarty Avenue to Williamstown Road and Hyde Street in Yarraville.

The Big West Festival will celebrate its 10th running a year from now and organisers are calling for artists to take part.

As one of the leading community-based contemporary arts festivals in Australia, Big West, held in November every odd year, showcases the best cultural, economic and industrial qualities of Melbourne’s west.

Since its first staging in 1997, the biennial festival has attracted and created high-quality

Veteran Victoria University researcher Berwyn Clayton has been recognised for her achievements in the world of education and training.

Ms Clayton was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at a 2014 Australian Training Awards celebration in Adelaide late last month.

Ms Clayton, 71, was recognised for nearly 30 years’ service in workplace training, teaching and assessment, and for improving professional practice in the vocational education and training (VET) sector.

Since joining the sector, she has also worked as a curriculum development manager, professional developer, evaluator and researcher.

Ms Clayton described the recognition as “huge, because I’ve had a very long career”.

“I was really proud because I’m a teacher and a researcher. The three people before me [to be given the award] were bureaucrats and policy makers, so it was a bit of a change.

“When you look at the people who won the award before me, I was surprised to have won because I thought I couldn’t live up to that title.”

In 2001, Ms Clayton was made a fellow of the Australian College of Educators.

From 2000 to 2004, she was president of the Australian Vocational Education and Training Research Association, an organisation she helped establish.

“I’ve been teaching for 51 years and my

West Footscray duo Emily Grant have just returned from a world tour and will now bring their show to Melbourne to promote a new album, Turning Around.

Vocalist and pianist Emily Coyle and guitarist Grant Staines began working together in Western Australia in the early 1990s under the name of Idle55.

After a period overseas and a couple of successful albums, they went underground for a few years to write and reinvent themselves.

This year they’ve re-emerged with a new name and a new album.

Emily Grant produce their own sounds of piano, guitar and vocals and want their appreciation of music to be shared by everyone.

“That’s our aim,” Coyle says. “Rather than reflecting what is trending on radio or popular culture, we strive to write and perform material for people who are genuinely into music and seeking artists outside the mainstream.

“Ultimately, I just want to join with our audience in a love of music; to tell a musical or narrative story that captures all our imaginations and take us away from the worries of our daily lives.”

Staines says the pair want their audience to expand their taste in music.

“We want them to be as into music as we are and not be restricted by style,” he says. “I believe and celebrate that a good song is a good song, no matter what the context.”

The Women on Wheels workshop comes to Braybrook on December 9 to educate women on car maintenance and offer practical guidelines for motoring safety and vehicle maintenance.

Hosted by Kevin Dennis Holden, this hands-on evening will have women checking oil levels, changing tyres, jump-starting vehicles and checking and correcting tyre pressures.

Women on Wheels director Jacqui Morrison White said most women were not exposed to the requirements of basic car maintenance and the workshops were aimed at changing this.

“Over 15,000 women all over Australia have completed the Women On Wheels workshop since its inception more than 15 years ago,” she said.

“All ladies, from teenagers about to get their licences to mums with precious cargoes, to elderly drivers, will benefit.

“Teaching women how to check tyre pressures and read tread wear and how often to do these things will not only keep them safer but will save them money in tyre replacement and fuel efficiency.

“Each woman we teach may one day teach a learner driver and maybe this knowledge can become part of what we pass on to each new driving generation.”

The free workshop will run from 7-9.30pm at Kevin Dennis Holden, 272 Ballarat Road, Braybrook.

Hewitt, 67, said the award was encouragement to other artists to keep striving.

“Ever since I was a kid, I’ve wanted to be an artist,” he said.

“I tell a lot of my students that just because you’re a good painter doesn’t mean you’re going to be the most recognised because a lot of stuff you see in art shows these days is pretty ordinary, but the artists seem to get recognition.

“Just keep working at it, don’t worry about what anyone else says.

“You just keep working away at your craft to better yourself, and I think the recognition comes eventually.”

Newport’s Ray Hewitt has been named the Victorian Artists Society’s (VAS) ‘artist of the year’.

Hewitt, a tonal impressionist and one of VAS’s teachers of traditional oil painting, was presented with the award at last week’s opening of the major Artist of the Year Exhibition of more than 100 works.

The 38 finalists filled three large galleries at VAS’s heritage-listed building in Albert Street, East Melbourne.

VAS president Eileen Mackley said the award was unique as it was not awarded by a committee or judge but by peers of the winning artist, and it demanded a sustained quality of performance throughout the year.

Angry ratepayers are seeking a Local Government Department inquiry into Footscray Council’s financial position.

And next Monday night the council will have a special open meeting to explain and justify the 53 per cent rate rise to members of the six-day-old Footscray Ratepayers Association. The ratepayers’ association was formed last Friday night when 200 people attended a rates protest meeting in Prosperity Hall in Pickett Street, Footscray.

Unemployed single mothers with little education are increasingly becoming the poorest and most oppressed citizens of the western suburbs. They are surviving on pensions and emergency relief in the form of food, clothing and furniture handouts.

They cannot get work because of their low standard of education and lack of qualifications. The hard facts come from charity and government organisations in Altona, Werribee, Footscray and Sunshine.

Eighty-two decrepit, crumbling monuments in the Roman Catholic section of the Williamstown Cemetery will be removed if relatives of the deceased do not come forward to repair them.

The manager and secretary of the Williamstown Public Cemetery Trust, Mr Graham MacGill, said many of the monuments were more than 100 years old. Some are crumbling, others have been smashed to pieces and many have sunk into the ground. Mr MacGill is worried the dilapidated monuments are a danger to cemetery visitors.

Hobsons Bay Council’s only new councillor, Mary Ann Lindsay, has been called on to resign only days after being elected. Cr Lindsay has been accused of misleading voters. Hobsons Bay Community First levelled the accusations in a statement this week, claiming the self-confessed independent candidate ran as a ‘stooge’ in last month’s election with the intention of either directing preferences to the official ALP candidates or joining the ALP caucus if elected. In a statement issued through the council last week, Cr Lindsay denied allegations that she had said she would caucus with the ALP.

having brunch there some day, though there are plenty of options including Ms Yon’s original establishment Le Petite Café and The Little Kitchen, a cute place with nice big rustic benches and a full view of the galley that gives this place its name. As well as great coffee, they do nice breakfast fare with a good balance of fancy and healthy options and the ever popular bacon and eggs. It is also open for lunch and dinner.

For pub grub we tried out Five O’s, which serves up decent nosh at bargain prices. Score a balcony table here to gaze out over the beach and catch the ocean breeze.

Accommodation options abound in Coogee.

In the mid range is the Dive Hotel, which fortunately doesn’t live up to its name. This boutique family-run hotel is perfectly situated

on Arden Street across the road from the beach with prices ranging from about $200 to $320 per night depending on the room and view.

It’s an old building but the rooms are nicely renovated with bright contemporary beach house décor. Continental breakfast is included, which provides a good opportunity to speak with the owners, who are long-time Coogee residents and full of advice about things to see, do and eat.

protected inlets in between, such as Gordons Bay and Clovelly Beach, which provide an opportunity for other activities such as snorkelling and stand-up paddle boarding.

Away from the water, Coogee has a host of bars, cafes and restaurants ranging from the big and boisterous Coogee Bay Hotel to hip little joints off the main drag.

Seeking the latter, we were happy to heed a recommendation to book a table at the newish Café de France on Havelock Street. This little place is a relaxed cafe by day and elegant French bistro in the evening (Thursday to Saturday) with authentic Gallic cuisine.

We were served by the owner herself, French ex-pat foodie Rafaele Yon, who read out each menu item in a way that made us want to try the lot. We settled on sharing the 800-gram rib-eye steak (pour deux) – beautifully pan fried and tender and served with roasted vegetables.

It was more than enough for the two of us, so much so we opted to share dessert: the rich, sublime chocolate mousse. The prices here are very reasonable, with main meals averaging around $30. I look forward to

Under sunny skies onlookers move to the Latin beat, being careful not to make eye contact with the girls for fear of being pulled into the dance.

On the beach, surf lifesavers practise drills alongside several soccer pitches marked into the sand for a tournament featuring police officers from around the state.

It’s a typical sunny Sunday at Coogee.

This beautiful Sydney beach suburb doesn’t share the fame or pretentiousness (by Sydney standards) of nearby Bondi, but it isn’t exactly a sleepy hollow either.

The bustling village provides an interesting balance in being upmarket while still proving popular with backpackers, families and daytripping locals young and old.

On any warm day the shady foreshore lawns are packed with people of varied ages and cultural demographics, yet the beach itself is big enough to find your own place on the sand.

I must confess to preferring the proverbial long walks by the sea to lying on the beach, and there’s no shortage of those here, whether in the form of a stroll along the promenade or a more energetic hike to neighbouring beaches along the famous Bondi to Coogee Walk. This six-kilometre cliff-top path has stunning views of the ocean, bays and beaches including Tamarama, Maroubra and Bronte.

A medium-grade walk with some steep gradients and steps, it’s doable for most fitness levels, though if you need a breather there are plenty of places to stop, from benches and beaches to bars and cafes.

While Bondi and Coogee beaches are big stretches of sand and surf, there are a few small

On the Otago trail

By Ben Thomas Mention Central Otago and one wine springs to mind: pinot noir. Established in the late 1990s, Central Otago is New Zealand’s youngest wine region and its rise has been nothing short of miraculous. Now famous for its pinot noir, the region’s pioneers had other grapes in mind when they first established vineyards.

“In the early days of Central Otago we had vineyards with cabernet sauvignon, syrah, gewürtztraminer, sauvignon blanc and chenin blanc,” says Blair Walter, who made his first Central Otago wine with Felton Road in 1997.

“It’s gone from a smorgasbord to being 70 per cent pinot noir, then pinot gris and riesling.

Regional Styles From the Gibbston Valley to Lowburn, Felton Road’s Blair Walter has the low-down on the different styles of pinot noir across the region.

There are four distinct sub-regions: Gibbston, Alexandra, Wanaka and the Cromwell basin, which includes Bannockburn, Lowburn, Pisa and Bendigo and accounts for 70 per cent of the production in Central Otago.

“Gibbston has a higher elevation and cooler sites, so there’s more earthier, briar, green-tinged cooler-climate styles,” says Walter.

“Bannockburn and Bendigo, being a bit warmer, tend to be a bit fleshier and more densely structured, and Alexandra, being a little bit cooler, produces slightly lighter, more elegant wines.

“Wanaka’s a little hard to characterise because there aren’t many wineries.

But because of its westerly location and slightly higher elevation it’s a little more like Gibbston, with darker shades.”

Central Otago has risen to become the third-largest wine-growing region in New Zealand – Marlborough is the biggest by far, with about 23,000 hectares planted to vines, followed by Hawkes Bay (4500 hectares) and Central Otago with 2000 hectares.

The main reason pinot noir has risen to the top is Central Otago’s climate. Sitting on the 45th parallel, Central Otago shares a latitude with other revered winemaking regions – Bordeaux, Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Italy’s Piedmont in the northern hemisphere.

Because of New Zealand’s smaller land mass, Central Otago is cooler than its northern

hemisphere cousins, making it perfect for pinot noir.

“It’s a very dry climate, which is important to pinot noir because it has thin skins and is prone to disease and rotting when wet. But it loves a cool climate to flourish and have typical pinot characters, or pinosity,” says Walter.

“What makes it work for us is the protection from the Southern Alps, rising from the ocean up to 3000 metres just to the west of us.

“On the western side of the Alps you’ve got one of the wettest spots on the planet, with 7-10 metres of rain a year and we’re just 80 kilometres to the east of there and we only

record 350 millimetres a year.

“If you’re growing pinot noir in a warmer climate, they tend to be lighter-bodied with red cherry and red raspberry, lighter-style wines.

Here the warm days and really cold nights help seal in dark fruits and you’re getting real pinot noir characters.”

Dean’s ton sets up Dogs

By Lance Jenkinson Footscray Edgewater has regained a footing inside the Victorian Premier Cricket top eight.

The Bulldogs ran down Dandenong at the weekend for an important 75-run victory on the road at Shepley Oval.

Set a tricky 217, the Dogs marched confidently past the target six down and proceeded to get in some handy batting practice late on Sunday to finish on 6-292.

No. 3 Travis Dean had another superb outing with 125 not out and continues to stake his claim for higher honours with 431 runs at 86 so far this summer.

He is second only to St Kilda run machine Matthew Chasemore in the batting aggregates.

Dean has the best average of all batsmen with 300 or more runs this season and has four 50s to go with his ton.

If he keeps going at this rate, Dean might expect a call from Victorian Bushrangers selectors in the not-too-distant future.

He featured in six partnerships, the biggest a 124-run sixth-wicket stand with Hamish Winter-Irving (59).

Better known as a bowler, Winter-Irving has stamped himself a genuine all-rounder with two 50s in his past three innings to go with a 33 not out in round one.

Earlier in the day, a solid 60-run opening partnership between captain Dean Russ (20) and James Crosthwaite (39) laid the foundation for the Bulldogs’ successful run chase.

The Bulldogs will click into big bash mode in the run-in to Christmas with four consecutive Twenty20 games scheduled before the midsummer break, starting with Frankston Peninsula at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday and St Kilda at the Junction Oval on Sunday.

Both games will begin at 2.30pm.

The biggest soccer clubs in the municipality will battle it out in the inaugural Hobsons Bay Cup next year.

Top-ranked Altona Magic has hosting rights for the pre-season tournament at its Paisley Park home, beginning on February 24. There will be two groups of four teams, with the top two in each group advancing to the playoffs. Group 1 will consist of the host club, along with Altona North, Barnstoneworth and Williamstown.

Group 2 will feature Altona East Phoenix, Altona City, Melbourne City and Laverton Park. The group stage will be played as shorter 35-minute halves because of the heavy schedule of matches that will see clubs play two games in three nights over three consecutive weeks. The playoffs will revert back to the traditional 45-minute halves. The final will be under lights on Friday, March 20.

Tennis

Bayside Thunder hit the court running on the opening weekend of the Asia Pacific Tennis League women’s south-east conference. The Williamstown-based team has shot to second after consecutive wins. In Friday’s opening night in Frankston, the Thunder enjoyed a hard-fought four rubbers to two win over the Kooyong Classics, and then backed it up on Sunday in Yarrawonga with a 5-1 thrashing of the Mornington Missiles.

The Thunder (2-0) will host the third round at Bayside P-12 College on Friday when they will meet MCC Stars (2-0). The first serve is at 6.30pm.
