…….or how to ‘do’ a Boxing Day sale
A
nyone who hasn’t yet signed up for the fun, some say the temporary madness, of a Boxing Day sale but plans a running-with-the-shoppers experience this year, are urged to keep reading.
Entering the fray, a shoulder-to-shoulder, nose-to-back affair, without a survival plan is folly for a newbie. So if you want your bargain hunting to be as exciting as you just know it will be, here’s The Plan: 1. If a store opens at 8am, get there much earlier if you want to be anywhere near the front of the throng at one of the biggies, such as David Jones, Myer and Kmart. Or stroll in later when crowds are thinning – but will that mean missing out on the bargain of the year? 2. Write a list the night before of what you want and stick to it. Or throw it out because it gets in the way of creativity. You choose. But be afraid, very afraid, of future credit card pain. 3. Wear flats - even better, padded running shoes. Pack water. Pack deodorant (if it’s ever going to fail, it’ll be now). Dress for speedy aisle navigation. And rapid-fire clothes changing - back zips and skinny jeans are sheer recklessness. 4. Have a strictly designated meeting point if in a crew. You can get lost in some places. Seriously – by mid-afternoon you may even need to meet yourself there just to regroup. Phone contact is all very handy for a ‘lost’ alert but you need a rallying point to get to so you can rejoin the group to brag about the item you will say cost $50 less than it actually did. And to have a coffee together because you will need one or many. 5. Say to yourself and others, often: “This is fun. We’ll be home soon.” Happy Boxing Day, and may your bargains be bargains and your experience one to remember with a smile. Even if it’s one of relief that it’s all over until the next time.
