Short change to tradition The Westside Saints Netball Club have broken a long held netball tradition and created a piece of history in the process. The Saints, a representative team out of the St Albans Caroline Springs Netball Association have become the first in the state to do away with skirts in favour of shorts. Tracy Wallace helped lead the way on the initiative and said it was a long time coming. “We started designing the shorts about six months ago with manufacturer BLK, had samples made and had the girls try them on,” she said. “We actually had to go to Netball Victoria to change bylaws, which they were really good about … there were no problems there.” The shorts were debuted last Tuesday night and Ms Wallace said there was a strong reaction. “There were lots of people looking in shock when they saw them,” she said. “The main comment was that it looked like we were wearing training attire … that’s the idea, it makes sense to train in the same sort of gear you play in.” Ms Wallace said more clubs will follow the Saints’ lead. “I guarantee that within 12 months others will start wearing them,” she said. “They’ll let the dust settle, then they’ll them roll out … especially when the Suncorp side the Queensland Firebirds wear them this year.” Tate Papworth

Brimbank security boost Three Brimbank sites will undergo security upgrades following a funding win from the state government’s Community Safety Fund. Installation of under awning lighting will take place in Elaine Street, St Albans to improve perceptions of safety and security following a successful bid from the council. The $9,090 project follows previous safety initiatives in the area, which includes the installation of CCTV cameras.

The council also had a successful bid in Sunshine, where security lighting will be installed in the Watt Street carpark to prevent and deter crime and anti-social behaviour. The $4,490 project could be the start of a number of security measures for the suburb. In November, Sunshine traders told Star Weekly they would lobby the Department of Justice and Brimbank council to install CCTV cameras throughout the suburb. Sunshine Business Association president Carson Luk said an application for cameras

would be lodged when submissions open this year. “For a while we thought other things like improved lighting needed to happen before cameras went in, but now our backyard is in order, we’ll be putting in an application for cameras when the Department of Justice grants open next year,” he said. The Brimbank Little Athletics Centre is also set for some upgrades. The centre was awarded $10,000 to install vandal-proof security lighting and security

gates to prevent further beak-ins and improve the security of equipment stored on site. The initiatives are a handful of 63 which are being rolled out across the state. Acting Minister for Crime Prevention Jill Hennessy said the grants were vital for keeping the community safe. “We’re supporting 63 local organisations to run community safety projects at the grassroots – each of these groups are working hard to develop solutions to combat local crime,” she said.

Police angst over driver behaviour By Tate Papworth Brimbank Highway Patrol members were left shaking their heads at driver behaviour over the Australia Day long weekend. Across the four-day operation, Brimbank police detected 243 traffic offences, with 118 speeding offences, 24 mobile phone offences and 23 seatbelt offences. Even more troubling were the nine drink drivers and three drug drivers caught, with 12 vehicles impounded. A 38-year old man from Taylors Lakes was

detected driving 100km above the speed limit and failed to stop for police. When his car finally did stop he was placed in handcuffs and taken to the Sunshine Police Station. His car was impounded and he has been given a court date for dangerous driving whilst being pursued. A P plate driver with a car full of friends was also detected doing 111km/h in an 80 zone on the Melton Highway. The driver was issued with a mandatory loss of licence following the incident. There were also 21 unregistered

Scam warnings as locals dig deep for fires

The theatre of calisthenics A Taylors Lakes calisthenics star is making the most of a rare opportunity. Olivia D’Agruma was part of the first calisthenics theatre show Amazing Grace which ran over the weekend. The 17-year-old said it was an experience she loved. “It’s an extreme privilege to be perform alongside musical theatre performers … never get to do that in calisthenics,” she said. “It’s been one of best parts of show.” It was the second instalment of the

production, which debuted in 2018. It boasted a cast of over 40 of Australia’s elite calisthenics and musical theatre performers, and new arrangements of more than 20 songs from old to new Broadway. Ms D’Agruma, who also featured in the production’s first run, performed multiple roles in the show. “The second instalment of the show takes things up a massive notch … it’s a much larger class and it’s much bigger in terms of who we have,” she said.

“The items are much more theatrical and entertaining too.” Ms D’Agruma began calisthenics at just three years of age and says she still has lofty goals. “Performing in this production and winning nationals twice have probably been the highlights of my career,” she said. “There’s the most graceful girl title, which is probably the most prestigious title in the sport … it would be really exciting to be able to compete in that competition.” Tate Papworth

The recent bushfi res that have devastated large sections of the country have showcased the giving nature of Australians. There are currently a wide range of appeals raising funds for people and animals affected by the bushfi res. Unfortunately, some of these are scams. According to Scamwatch, a government website set up to provide information about how to recognise, avoid and report scams, there are a number of different methods being used by scammers. According to the site, scammers are pretending to be legitimate well-known charities, creating their own charity names, and impersonating people negatively impacted by the bushfi res. They are also cold-calling, direct messaging and creating fake websites and pages on social media to raise funds. However the people looking to give to the bushfi re appeal aren’t the only who have been targeted in recent times. In December supermarket giant Woolworths was forced to issue an urgent alert after a sharp spike in scams aiming to trick customers by giving away free vouchers or gift cards. People who suspect a scam can make a report on the Scamwatch website, or fi nd more information about where to get help. Selling? Get set to make a profit By Tate Papworth There may be a shortage of houses on the market, but Brimbank owners opting to sell are being handsomely rewarded. Data released by Corelogic reveals that 91.9 per cent of properties on the market within the municipality during the September 2019 quarter, sold for a profit. The median profit made on houses sold in Brimbank during that period was $290,000. Across the country house resellers were more likely than unit sellers to experience gains.

According to the Pain and Gain report, 90 per cent of houses across Australia sold for more than their previous purchase price compared to 80.2 per cent of apartments. CoreLogic head of residential research Eliza Owen said owner-occupied properties were the most sought after.

Nationally, 88.9 per cent of owner-occupied properties resold for a profit compared to 83.4 per cent of investor-owner properties. “When it comes to generating a profit for the seller, owner-occupied properties have outperformed investment properties in all markets except for Hobart and Regional Tasmania,” Ms Owen said. “Over the September 2019 quarter, 98.8 per cent of investment properties resold in Hobart were profitable compared to 98.0 per cent of owner-occupied dwellings.” Overall, house resellers were more likely

than unit sellers to experience gains. Ninety per cent of houses across Australia sold for more than their previous purchase price compared to 80.2 per cent of apartments. In Brimbank, just 8.1 per cent of properties sold for less than their purchase price. The median loss for the municipality was $30,000. The favourable returns comes off the back of a surge in the Brimbank housing market. During the same period, the median house price for Sunshine leaped 22.2 per cent to $816,000.

Prolific young artist A young Sunshine-based artist with a burgeoning portfolio is daring to dream big. Fifteen-year-old Charliese Euphemia began taking art seriously three years ago and says things have snowballed from there. “I started sketching mainly as a way for me to express my emotions,” Euphemia said. “Instead of keeping diary, I put emotions onto paper. As I learnt more, my technique got better and I grew to love it even more.” A home school student, Euphemia said her mother’s influence also played a role. “When I was younger, mum did a lot of art stuff with me,” she said. “Later, I found Youtube and various other forms of media and discovered that people are doing this for a living and that’s when I got more serious. Euphemia says she prefers realism and focuses on oil and watercolour painting. “The beauty of realism is that it’s drawing

real life … people are drawing inspiration from everything that’s around them and that’s what I love about it.” While three years isn’t a long time, Euphemia has proven to be prolific. “I do maybe 200 pieces a year … in the past month however I’ve done about 50,” she said. “They vary in how long it takes to finish each one,” she said. “Each piece is different. North West Metro Region police last week arrested 17 people as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of aggravated burglaries, robberies and thefts in Melbourne’s west and the Surf Coast over the month of January. A total of 17 youths were charged as part of the operation. Fourteen were remanded in custody, with all 17 to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

Women switch it up A touch football program for women is making its way to Deer Park. Switch, an initiative of NRL Touch Football and VicHealth, aims to improve health and well-being of Victorian women through social sport. Touch Football Victoria state programs coordinator Tarryn McDowall said it’s a great way to boost confidence and learn something new. “Over six weeks, participants will build on the fitness and skills to boost confidence and strengthen women in touch football,” she said. “Our programs are conveniently hosted by a number of Touch Football clubs across Victoria which allows participants to easily connect in with their respective Touch Football

community. “The programming is constantly changing and accommodating to all fitness and skill levels, making it a great alternative to the conventional boot camp.” She said Switch focuses on the fun and social benefits of touch football. “Current feedback from the program is very positive having large numbers either returning for more programs or joining their local touch football club,” Ms McDowall said. About 30 firefighters were required to clean up a chemical spill at a warehouse on Strzelecki Avenue in Sunshine West on January 23. Crews entered the property and located a spill of around 40 litres of what was believed to be a hydrogen peroxide acid mixture. Approximately 20 people were safely evacuated from the warehouse.

Giving bikes a second life

Unwanted bikes will be given a second life as part of a new program. Brimbank council has teamed up with Inner West Community Bike Hub to launch a bicycle donation program which aims to ensure unwanted or abandoned bikes find their way back into the community. Through the program called ‘Give a Bike’, community members are invited to donate their unwanted bikes to be cleaned and repaired and given to someone in need. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou encouraged community members to support the program. “Council is really happy to partner with Inner West Community Bike Hub to deliver this fantastic new program,” she said. All donated bikes will be passed on to Inner West Community Bike Hub to be cleaned and repaired before finding a new home. Donations need to be in good condition or easily repaired. Bikes with broken frames or that are beyond repair cannot be accepted. The Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre is located on Stadium Drive, Keilor Park and is open Monday to Friday 9am-4pm and on Saturdays 9am-1pm. Western Health is on the hunt for suitable volunteers to help run four of its hospitals. Volunteers are being sought for the Joan Kirner Womens and Children’s Hospital, Sunshine Hospital and the Footscray and Williamston hospitals. Western Health acting manager community engagement and volunteers Karin Haufe-Stellini said the organisation is looking forward to adding to the more than 650 volunteers currently working with it. “You’re supporting your community hospital,” she said.

Ms Haufe-Stellini said the process was simple. “Once someone has expressed interest, we contact them and arrange a time to come in to discuss the position,” she said. “We then outline the program and make sure the person is suitable.

All volunteers are required to consent to police and referee checks. They must also provide a working with children check and proof of immunisation.

Turbulence struck over workshop By Tate Papworth A number of Brimbank residents have vowed to continue to seek answers to questions they have surrounding Melbourne Airport’s proposed third runway. A community workshop held by Airservices Australia last Wednesday night failed to address a number of the group’s concerns. Melbourne Airport Community Action Group member Hannah Robertson attended the workshop and said while parts were informative, she still had a number of unanswered concerns.

“Two people from Airservices presented. There were moments when they got quite short, which is understandable considering they had to keep the meeting flowing, but it adds to the sense that we’re not being listened too,” she said. “We had very little notice and very little time to prepare for this meeting. Flight path design is an extremely complex thing and most community members don’t have a background in this. “It’s not reasonable to expect us to prepare an adequate response to something like this in a short period of time.”

Brimbank residents are being urged to take the opportunity to detox their homes. The council is providing a detox day in which residents can dispose of common, highly toxic household chemicals and in the process help the environment. It says risk the service reduces the risk of poisoning, environmental pollution and fire hazards and will help improve recycling rates. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou encouraged residents to take advantage the free opportunity. “This is a safe and convenient way to dispose of highly toxic chemicals you may have lying around your home and might not know how to get rid of,” Cr Papafotiou said. “Another bonus is that you have the peace of mind that these items are being disposed of safely and are no longer a threat to you, your loved ones and our precious environment.” Accepted items include acids and alkalis, aerosol cans detergents, disinfectants and fire extinguishers. Glues, nail polish and remover, paint stripper, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, ray poison and photographic chemicals will also be accepted. Detox your Home will be held on Saturday, February 15 from 9am-3pm at the council’s operation centre in Keilor Park. Registration is mandatory as places are limited. The team at Watergardens Town Centre have paused to reflect on the centre’s 22-year history as it gears up to launch a new precinct dubbed Marketplace. The shopping mall’s longest serving tenants, The Lambevski family, of Bakers Delight, the Gioliano family, of Lotto Luck, the Nathan family, of Zoes Kitchen, and the Murphy family, of Mr Minit, have been part of the fabric of the centre since it opened in September 1997. Safe haven for those at risk By Tate Papworth Derrimut YMCA Early Learning Centre staff are on a mission to create a community hub for residents to feel safe and learn something new. In recent months, the centre has become a safe haven for locals facing domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse and mental health issues where inequality and adversity is widespread. According to the Index of Relative Disadvantage, Derrimut has the second lowest socio-economic score in Melbourne.

The centre has already offered a number of support sessions to vulnerable community members, but one worker wants to expand the offering further. Shea Quirk has set her sights on running regular community classes at the centre for locals to learn new skills and experience a sense

of belonging. “The residents of Derrimut are incredibly isolated which can be a contributing factor to many of the issues this community is facing,” she said. “We have plenty of space to hold activities – we just need volunteers to run them. We want to give local residents the opportunity to have fun and learn something new – whether it’s healthy low-cost cooking classes or knitting, painting and yoga, we’d love to hear from anyone in the area who has knowledge and skills they would like to share with the broader community.”

She said it’s an incredibly rewarding opportunity. “It all comes back to the Y philosophy to provide children with a safe and nurturing space – for children living in domestic violence and not being fed, this can create life-long trauma; it impacts the type of teens and adults they will become,” she said. “By supporting families in any way we can, we are giving children the best start to life.” To put forward ideas for classes, or express your interest in being involved, email Shea at: derrimut@ymca.org.au

Casting a wine spell Sunshine’s ‘Wine Whitch’ is back. Renowned wine educator Jenny Polack is returning to the Sunshine Social. Following two successful events, Ms Polack has decided to bring her wine tasting classes to the establishment on the first Saturday of each month. The first will be held on March 7 from 4pm. Ms Polack said it was an informal chance to taste some wines and talk about them. “For only $10 you get to have a taste of three premium wines,“ she said. “But people can also just come down for a drink, I’ll be around for a bit of a talk with those who want to know more. “For people who like wine, but don’t know much about it, it’s a good way to learn a bit.“ While she’s devoted much of her life to wine education, Ms Polack’s first foray into the industry was mere chance. “I started off in the wine industry extremely 12439935-SN06-20

Animal cruelty in the spotlight By Tate Papworth

Brimbank had the 15th highest number of complaints in the state, but came in 60th per capita. RSPCA Victoria chief executive Dr Liz Walker was disappointed to note that neglect made up the highest proportion of animal cruelty concerns reported. “Neglect is a form of cruelty, and it is heartbreaking to know so many animals continue to suffer across our state due to lack of basic care,” Dr Walker said. “The 2018-19 animal cruelty report statistics

The RSPCA received 254 reports of animal cruelty within the Brimbank municipality during the 2018-19 financial year. The animal welfare body received 77 reports of husbandry issues, which includes grooming, poor hygiene, poor living conditions and improper rugging. It received a further 73 reports of sick and injured animals, 46 for underweight animals and 46 of insufficient water.

represents a person who has acted on their concern for an animal,” she said. “The individuals who make these reports give voice to vulnerable animals who can’t speak for themselves.” Across the state, the RSPCA received 11,638 animal cruelty reports in 2018-19 – an average of 31 per day. The 11,638 cruelty reports received represent an increase of almost 1,000 reports compared to the previous year’s total of 10,642, or 9.4 per cent.

The growth of sporting clubs in Caroline Springs has seen more investment in facilities, with works beginning on an extended pavilion last week. The pavilion at Caroline Springs Town Centre Sports Precinct will be upgraded across the next 12 months, with funds from the state government and council going towards the $2.12 million project. Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek was on hand last week to turn the first sod on the project, with money from the state government’s Growing Suburbs Fund contributing to the upgrade. “This is a fantastic example of what can be achieved when state and local government work hand-in-hand in partnership to deliver for the community,” he said. “I’m sure the facility will become a great resource for the community once it is completed, and with more people choosing to call Caroline Springs home, it is more

Two bright and bold exhibitions have filled CS Gallery and Melton Library with a vibrant display of colour. Come along this month for a show of fun works for children, or an insight into the journey to marriage equality. LET’S EAT CAKE Follow artist Maylei Hunt’s colourful, historical and personal journey to marriage equality in Australia through an exhibition of street photography. Hunt’s images capture the vibrant fighting spirit of the LGBTIQA+ community and its allies at marriage equality marches, show key events including the plebiscite announcement in November 2017, and celebrate the first year of marriage equality in Australia.

We also kicked off another exciting infrastructure project in partnership with the State Government – a much-needed upgrade of Stan Payne Reserve, Diggers Rest.

Jarrod Hynes, was named Citizen of the Year; with Chloe Wright named Young Citizen of the Year.

This project will deliver natural and artificial shade to help future-proof this open space from climbing temperatures; new plantings to enhance the natural environment; and improved access to public art, historical elements and interpretative signage, throughout.

Kelly Busuttil received the Gender Equity Leader award; Emily Attard, our Access and Inclusion Leader award, and Yvette Medina, our Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Leader award. These outstanding residents give so much to our community—their time, knowledge and experience—and make our City a great place to call home. I’d also like to congratulate residents Daryl Akers OAM, John Lo Piccolo OAM, and Evelyn Missen OAM, who were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia, as part of this year’s Australia Day honours.

MY BRIMBANK Dr Selvanayagam Selvendra was named Brimbank’s Citzen of the Year following almost 60 years of service to the medical industry. He spoke with Tate Papworth. Congratulations on the award, it must be nice to be recognised? I was incredibly humbled to receive the award, it’s not something I was expecting. Tell us a little about your career.

I worked as a general practitioner for 45 years in Brimbank. I worked at practices in both West Sunshine and North Sunshine. I also worked as a surgeon in Melbourne for 20 years, including at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. In total I worked as a doctor for 59 years, retiring in 2019. What kept you out west for so long? The patients. They were always so good to me. Actually when I retired I was given over 50 best wishes cards from patients. Were there any challenges along the way? The constant changes in technology and procedures. There has been lots of improvements to keep on top of. At the beginning everything was hand written, now

it’s computers. Pin hole surgery wasn’t a thing either, but with technology more and more things have become possible.

I was a general surgeon for a long period of time. Looking back I think the thing I’m most proud of is that I didn’t lose a single patient. In other words none died. Patients kept coming back because of the relationships we’d formed which was also something I’m proud of.

Did you have enough free time for hobbies? I do a lot of painting … I’ve been doing it for many, many years. I also love music. I play a lot of percussion … about 15 different instruments.

The possibility of the government building an abattoir in the heart of Sunshine is still a threat and will remain so until at least 1990, the Minister for Planning, Mr. Lou Lieberman said in Sunshine last week. Concert to raise money for our farmers The Healesville Amateur Racing Club is set to rock later this month as it plays host to a charity concert striving to help fire and drought-affected farmers. The concert will raise money for Need for Feed Disaster Relief – a Lions Club project supplying hay and fodder to farmers in Victoria and NSW since 2006. The concert will feature eight hours of continuous music across two stages. Acts already confirmed include Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows, John Schumann (Redgum), The Badloves, Peter Denahy, Shane Howard (Goanna), Damian Howard and the Ploughboys, Oz Rock Express, and Screaming Eagles. Healesville Amateur Racing Club secretary Chris Young said there are still several acts to be confirmed and urged any musicians who are interested in performing to contact the club. Mr Young said the club was also seeking sponsors for the event. The Need for Feed Disaster Relief Charity Concert is on Saturday, February 29, 3-11pm. SPORT Preparations over as Cup journey begins for Balmoral You know the football season is edging closer when Football Victoria runs its live draws for the qualifying rounds of the FFA Cup. The lower league teams will begin their quest on the weekend of February 15, including Brimbank sides Balmoral and Keilor Wolves. Both local sides have drawn home fixtures with Balmoral taking on Wendouree side Forest Rangers and Keilor Wolves facing Bendigo team Epsom. Balmoral began its preseason in the new year and has already played three friendlies, but coach Sergio Lunedei said the FFA Cup generates a bit more excitement and meaning for his players than what regular practice matches do. “When you play real competitive football, your players are more concentrated and that’s a fact,” Lunedei said. “When they’re more concentrated, they play in a certain way and try

to bring home the result. “That’s why it’s always better to play a real match.” The beauty of the cup is the unknowns that come along with it. Particularly in the early rounds, many of the teams are unfamiliar with their opponents, such is the case with Balmoral and Forest Rangers. “I’ve never seen them play and I don’t have much information on them,” Lunedei said. “We have to make sure we do our jobs and finish it off as soon as we can. “It’s good to face these teams that we never get a chance to play against.” While the league season is still two months away, Balmoral will return to state league 5 eager to go one step better after a second placed finish last season. The bulk of the Balmoral team from last

season will return, along with some handy recruits that Lunedei hopes will be the missing pieces in the jigsaw puzzle. “Last year, we put down the foundations of the team, so the core is staying,” he said. “The competition is getting better. “I don’t think other teams are there waiting for us to win it, so they’ll be strengthening up for sure. “We’re ready for that and we’re ready for the challenge. “I’ve been working as well, trying to strengthen up the team, so I’m sure we’ll be there challenging again.” Star striker Federico Rossini will be returning to Balmoral this season. By Lance Jenkinson A stellar year on the basketball court has landed Paul Tsapatolis the 2019 Don Deeble Rising Star award. Tsapatolis, from Point Cook, was crowned the Deeble champion at the annual awards night at the Deer Park Club last Wednesday night, taking out the top gong ahead of nine other worthy nominees. The runners up were Footscray rower Samuel Wilson and Altona hockey player Connar Otterbach, while encouragement awards went to footballer Lucas Rocci and sprinter Matthew Payne. Tsapatolis was nominated for the Deeble award in 2017 but missed out and it spurred him to work even harder to eventually take out the top youth sports honour in the western suburbs. “I got nominated two years ago and it was a great experience being the monthly winner,” Tsapatolis said. “Then going to the major awards night and didn’t get anything, I clearly wasn’t good enough, so I needed to work harder. “The last two years, I’ve worked hard and last year and so far this year it’s starting to pay off.” Tsapatolis will cherish the memories of 2019. The Deeble honour was the cherry on the top for the 17 year-old, having experienced such incredible highs last year. Taking out a title with Victoria at the under 18 national championships was a relief for Tsapatolis. “I didn’t win a nationals for three years after my first one in under 16s,“ he said. “That was definitely one of the highlights.” Tsapatolis, a Maribyrnong College student, went on to represent Australia at the Oceania championships. As the starting centre in the green and gold, Tsapatolis had an incredible tournament, playing a key role in his team’s triumph and then earning all star five honours. “Never in a million years did I think about making an all star five, let alone representing Australia again,” he said. “It’s something that not many people get to do, playing for your country and winning all star five. “You never really expect it when you’re playing junior basketball and even at the tournament I didn’t expect it. “To get that was pretty surreal.” If you think that basketball is all that is on Tsapatolis’s mind, think again. Tsapatolis was a talented junior in Australian rules football playing for Yarraville Seddon and a door could be opening up for him to move into the AFL system. Saad steps up and takes her AFLW opportunity New North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos AFLW recruit Vivien Saad wasn’t expecting to get her chance this AFLW season. Having played football for just one season, Saad was enjoying the opportunity to train with an AFLW squad. With Jess Duffin missing the season due to pregnancy, the Kangaroos applied to add a 31st player to their list. They were successful and jumped at the chance to promote Saad. Saad, who grew up in Brimbank, said it was exciting and pretty overwhelming to get an opportunity. “To be honest, it took me by surprise. I knew there was a lot to improve on in my game,” she said. “It wasn’t until a few of the other ‘AFLW train on’ girls hit me up asking if they had spoken to me and what’s happening. “It’s very exciting. They approached me about it and they wanted me to be that 31st player.” The transition into an AFLW player has been a quick one for Saad, who had been a basketballer. Her only football skills had come from

playing a bit of football with her cousins growing up. Having thought about making the move for a couple of years, she finally decided to take the plunge. She played with North Melbourne-aligned Melbourne University in last year’s VFLW season, and took ownership of their number one ruck position. “Football has always been on the back of mind for two to three years, but I had never really committed,” she said. “I thought I would give it a crack and fully commit to it and I did. I haven’t turned back since and I loved it. “I flicked an email to see if I could just jump in one of the sessions to see if I really enjoyed it. “I kept attending training and they were more than happy to have me on board and it kind of went from there.” Saad said despite making the big change from playing basketball to football, it was a decision that was easier than she thought. Saad played a key role in a number of Big V state championships with the Hume City Broncos.

She is one of four players from that club to join AFLW lists this season, including Kangaroos teammate Sarah Wright. “I think with my basketball, I had got to point where I had done what I wanted to do,” she said. “I finished on good terms with basketball and I loved it, but it was sort of what’s next? “I played basketball with a great bunch of girls and it was almost like the next step for me that I wanted to give football a crack.” The move to the AFLW list has already seen Saad go from training twice a week to four times a week. She said while she would love to play this season, she wasn’t setting too many expectations on herself. “I just want to kind of give it my all when I’m out there, as you don’t know how long you will be out there. “It’s about clearing your head and just keep doing what you’ve been doing to get you where you are.” Vivien Saad, left, is getting to work.

United feels the heat By Lance Jenkinson Western United had to withstand the heat on two fronts to return home with a share of the points from a nil-all draw with Newcastle Jets in the A-League at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday evening. United’s defence was on the end of a barrage of attack from the Jets, but they somehow kept a clean sheet, through sheer luck and a stellar performance from goalkeeper Filip Kurto. The inexperienced United also had to contend with stifling hot and humid weather, but managed to stay focused and yield an important point on a tough away trip. After conceding four goals with Swiss cheese-like defence against Adelaide United six days earlier, coach Mark Rudan said the first priority for Western United was to shore up its defence. “We needed to rectify what happened last week, copping four goals, albeit a different

opposition,” Rudan said. “That was a starting base for the week was understanding our roles and responsibilities without the ball. “In that regard, I thought we were much better.” Chances on the attacking end were few and far between for Western United. The best opportunity fell to a tiring Max Burgess with 10 minutes to go, but he put his shot wide. Western United has promoted a lot of youth in the new year, partly to do with exits during the January transfer window and injuries to key players. With a lot of youngsters in the starting line up, Rudan was pleased to see how his side reacted when it was put under intense pressure from Newcastle, who had a whopping 26 shots on goal. Inexperienced players Oskar Dillon, Tomi Uskok and Josh Cavallo stepped up.

“It’s not ideal you can’t work with the same players all the time, but it gives an opportunity to somebody else and hope to somebody else,” Rudan said. “They all put their hand up and put their best foot forward.” Dillon was singled out for his work in defence since joining in the transfer window. “It’s incredible his rise, three games in, only 20 years of age and his last competitive game was back in October in the Queensland NPL and he hasn’t missed a beat,” Rudan said. Rudan used his platform to call on the A-League to reconsider its 5pm starts in the summer months in future seasons. He believes the players welfare is compromised when the temperatures hit the high 30s and the fans do not get value for money. United has a bye this weekend, before their clash with Brisbane Roar on February 16 at Mars Stadium in Ballarat.

Deer Park is starting to make its move in the Bowls Victoria premier division. The Parkers were on a downward spiral at the back end of 2019, but the new year has seen a rise in confidence. After finishing December with three consecutive losses, the Parkers have return in January for two huge wins. After shocking Altona on the road in the first game back, the fifth-placed Deer Park repeated the dose with a 94-77 over Lilydale at Ballarat Road on Saturday. The Parkers took three of the four rinks to pick up 16 points, which moves them to within eight points of second spot. Deer Park’s top rink was the James Pearce quartet, including Chris Ball, Sam Shannahan and James Cousins. The Pearce rink had a resounding 30-18 win over Zac Woning. Brett Spurr claimed victory over Jessica Wallace 21-12 and Robert Doody beat Cleve Snary 22-17. The only losing rink for Deer Park was Brett Mahoney, who went down 30-21 to Josh Sanders. Deer Park will be keen to make it three wins in a row when it travels to sixth-placed Essendon on Saturday. The two sides played out a thriller in their first meeting with Essendon winning by just two shots. Lance Jenkinson
