Top citizens honoured By Tate Papworth Three Brimbank citizens have been awarded a medal of the Order of Australia for their significant contributions to the country. Keilor’s Paul Freestone received his award for his contribution to the road transport industry, and to the community. Mr Freestone set up Freestone Transport over three decades ago. With just one truck, he’s seen his fleet expand to more than 80 and while proud of his achievements, he said it was a complete shock to receive the award. “It’s very humbling and pretty hard to put into words,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of work for the industry itself and spent many years working with governments on issues surrounding ports, rail, air and sea to try and contribute to Melbourne and Victoria, so it’s nice to be acknowledged.”

In Sunshine the Ilbijerri Theatre Company’s artistic director Rachael Maza was recognised for her significant service to the performing arts. “I’m pretty overwhelmed, I remember when my dad got one and how proud he was,” Ms Maza said. “There’s no question that I’ve loudly and proudly trodded in his footsteps and picked up the baton where he left off.” Mz Maza said she will continue to tell stories from the nation’s first people. “Its more than making theatre for me, its about communicating and educating. “On the big scheme of things it’s who tells the narrative of this nation. “Ultimately I want to shift the conversation in this country. We should celebrate, embrace and relish this extraordinary, ancient history. “Nowhere in the world has what we have – a culture going back at least 60,0000 years.” Meanwhile a lifetime in music and performing by Hillside’s John Lo Piccolo was also recognised. Lo Piccolo – who has performed as John St Peeters since 1969 – was awarded the OAM for services to the performing arts, and said the announcement floored him. Lo Piccolo first came to prominence as a child, when his early performances with his piano accordion on talent show ‘New Faces’ and Graham Kennedy’s ‘In Melbourne Tonight’ saw him

become known as The Squeeze Box Kid. “In many ways I didn’t have a normal childhood,” he said. “I had a kidney condition which meant I couldn’t do the outdoor games that other kids were doing, and my dad was a musician so I started learning from him and

that’s how it all started.” At the municipality’s Australia Day ceremony, retired doctor and surgeon Dr Selvanayagam Selvendra was named the Brimbank citizen of the year. After arriving in Australia from Sri Lanka in 1974, he set up in Sunshine, working

in practices in West Sunshine and North Sunshine for 45 years. Eangano Singehebhuye was named young citizen of the year for his involvement in the Football Empowerment, a program that aims to empower young people through sport.

Vandals hit Brimbank Park Vandals have once again struck at a popular Brimbank park. Signs, infrastructure and 100-year old gum trees at Taylors Lakes’ Linear Park have been covered in graffiti. According to council officers, there’s no way of removing the graffiti from the trees without damaging them. The senseless vandalism is believed to be the act of a graffiti gang, which has prolifically littered Brimbank’s streets with its tag. Brimbank council spends about $300,000 a year removing graffiti and cleaning up acts of vandalism.

Married at First Sight A St Albans strength coach is hoping to find love and inspire others in the process. Amanda is one half of the first lesbian couple on the popular reality show Married at First Sight. While the show has a mixed success rate, Amanda said it was worth the chance. “I went through a bit of a rough time after I split with my ex and wanted to throw caution to the win,” Amanda, 34, said. “I’m hoping this opportunity can open doors and change things up. I just felt like my life had become a bit routine and mundane.” While she is hoping to find her perfect match, Amanda hopes her journey inspires others. “I come from a traditional European family, where the idea is to get married, buy a house and have kids. “So when I came out, it was something that’s a bit unheard of. “I want to show people who I am and if there’s people who can relate to my story, I hope it inspires them.” Although the show is aimed at finding love, Amanda said it won’t be the end of the world if things don’t work out with her bride. “People I’ve told I’m going on the show have been so excited, they’ve been telling me I’ll have girls sliding into my direct messages like that if it doesn’t work out. “I’m going to be on national TV so if it doesn’t work out hopefully some hot bird will see me, fall in love with me and it’ll be great.” Married at First Sight premieres on the Nine Network on Monday, February 3. In 2019 Brimbank council updated its graffiti prevention and management policy. Upon unveiling the policy, then mayor Lucinda Congreve said the new framework provided a coordinated approach to reducing the incidence of unauthorised graffiti. “Our annual cost for graffiti removal is approximately $300,000, and last financial year we received 655 requests to remove graffiti,” she said. “The good news is our proactive approach to removing graffiti, particularly in hot spots, has seen a healthy decline in the number of graffiti removal requests over the past five years – almost 40 per cent less. “Our priority is to continue this approach and prevent further unauthorised graffiti

vandalism.” Under local laws the council is able to issue infringement notices to anyone caught doing graffiti within the municipality. It also has provision to issue a notice to comply and an infringement notice to the owner of private property that has been defaced with graffiti (regardless of who is responsible for it appearing) which is designed prompt property owners to remove it. But vandals have continued to attack popular parks. The vandalism at Linear park at comes just days after the Brimbank council was forced to fence off the play area at Padley Park in St Albans after part of the play equipment was set on fire.

Grants to help you play sport Girls, people with a disability and first timers have extra incentive to get into sport. Brimbank council has opened priority access to its sports subsidy program, In2Sport. Under the scheme, children aged between six and 18 are able to apply for up to $200 financial assistance (up to 75 per cent of the membership cost) to contribute to club membership fees at participating Brimbank sports clubs. Brimbank Mayor Georgina Papafotiou, said the program provides a great opportunity for everyone to take up or continue with a sport. “In2Sport Brimbank is a fantastic council initiative that has been assisting young people get involved in local sports since 2013,” Cr Papafotiou said. “Playing sport is great for physical and mental health, and it’s a fantastic way to get involved in the local community, build friendships and develop healthy lifestyle habits.” Sports considered under the scheme include soccer, AFL, rugby, tennis, netball, basketball and badminton. The priority application period opened on Monday, January 20. Applications for everyone else open on February 17. To be eligible, children must live in Brimbank with their name listed on a health care card or pension concession card. Host your own event on Neighbour Day We’re encouraging residents to get to know their neighbours this Neighbour Day, with grants of up to $250 available to host an event. Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community and connection, and this year it takes place on Sunday 29 March. Grants can be used for anything from a neighbourhood barbecue, to a game of street cricket, a picnic in the park – or just a cup of tea with a few people.

This year’s theme is ‘Social Connection’, which is about flipping the discussion on loneliness to focus on building connections that help to give us a sense of community and belonging. Events do not have to be held on Neighbour Day (Sunday 29 March 2020) to be eligible for a Neighbour Day grant. Grant applications open on Wednesday 29 January 2020 and close on Sunday 1 March 2020.

Grant applications need to show how the activity will connect people and encourage neighbourhood participation at a local level. Sunshine house prices rocket By Tate Papworth House prices in Sunshine skyrocketed in the final few months of 2019. The median house price for Sunshine surged 22.2 per cent to $816,000, closing the gap on the Melbourne metro median price of $860,000. It’s the highest median house price for the suburb since the second quarter of 2018. Sunshine’s Sweeney Estate Agents director Benny Nguyen said the suburb was starting to cash in on its potential. “Certainly the central part of Sunshine

has skyrocketed, in fact the 3020 postcode in general has gone up considerably,” he said. “After the election it went crazy. Lots of investors came back … all the positive talk about the future and next few years for Sunshine, it’s helped drive this. “There’s a lot of people holding back on

selling because they’re seeing it rise. There’s lots of demand, but not as many houses.” He said those that have put houses on the market have cashed in quickly. “I listed two properties prior to Christmas last year. One sold in five days and the other sold off mark in one day. “When you’ve got a suburb that is 12km from the city and have all these major works happening, it’s not hard to see why it was one of the biggest growing suburbs in Melbourne for house prices.” Across the municipality in St Albans, house

prices also grew. The median house price for the suburb is now $641,000, up 6.8 per cent. However, prices in Keilor dropped by almost 10 per cent to $912,000. While the suburb still holds median house prices well above the metropolitan average, many residents have flagged concerns that Melbourne Airport’s third runway could negatively impact their home value. In October last year several Keilor residents told Star Weekly they were considering selling up because of the runway plans.

School journey begins As school starts for another year, so does the educational journey for thousands of preps across Brimbank. For twins Liam and Julian of St Albans, it’s a mixture of excitement and nerves. The boy’s mum, Brooke Scerri, said she was also battling nerves. “I’m excited because it’s the beginning of a new milestone for the boys and they’ll be learning and making new friends, but I’m also a little sad,” she said. “The boys were actually premature and we had a couple of issues early on, so it’s a little hard to let go.” “Julian has told me he’s very excited to make new friends and learn. He’s a bit of a chatterbox so I feel sorry for the teacher.” The boys will be attending St Albans East Primary School and Ms Scerri said she’s been sleeping easy knowing the boys are in safe hands.

“Liam has autism so he’s a little unsure on what to expect, but his older brother, who has the same thing, is also at the school and they’ve been fantastic. “The school probably doesn’t get enough credit, they actually helped diagnose our son with autism and have been a massive help. “Having one child there in similar circumstances has really put my mind at ease.” Tate Papworth

Pick pocket ring

Police have swooped on properties in Sunshine and Albion and charged seven people over a host of organised pick-pocketing and theft offences. The arrests were made after police executed warrants across the two suburbs earlier this month. All seven people arrested, a mix of Indian and Sri Lankan nationals, were bailed to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 14.

Brimbank’s diverse LGBTIQA+ community is taking centre stage. Billed as Australia’s premier LGBTQIA+ cultural festival, the Midsumma Festival celebrates queer artists and cultural diversity, through curating queer cultural experiences. This year Brimbank council is hosting a number of events as part of the festival until February 9. Events include a photography exhibition and performances at the Bowery Theatre. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the festival will be a coming together of art and the community. “Brimbank Council is proud to be part of the 2020 Midsumma Festival,” she said. “The festival program offers a visual feast of events

Firefighters battled a suspicious grassfire in Braybrook earlier this month. Crews were called to Beachley Street following multiple Triple Zero calls reporting a fire spreading along the train line. Crews arrived on scene and mounted an aggressive attack on the blaze, which was 200 metres by 50 metres in size. The fire was brought under control within 40 minutes. Its cause is under investigation.

Sunshine North factory fire It took more than 30 firefighters to battle a fire at a factory in Sunshine North on January 13. following reports of a large facility which was believed to be storing gas canisters and chemicals. Crews wearing breathing apparatus for protection began to attack the fire just before 6.30pm. The fire was brought under control in just over 15 minutes. Cleaning up the creek By Tate Papworth A group of Albion residents sick of seeing Kororoit Creek filled with litter are taking action. The creek bed between Forrest Street and Fraser street was strewn with litter following heavy rainfall last week. Albion resident Jessie Kernahan walks by the creek every day and said she felt compelled to take matters into her own hands. “I walk the dog along the trail every day and there’s always rubbish along it,” she said. “I noticed last year we had a really heavy rain and it pushed a lot of rubbish along. I contacted the council, but they didn’t do a good job of cleaning it. “So after our recent heavy rain my partner and I went down and there was so much rubbish down there.” “It was absolutely chocked with rubbish. It was crazy. We ended up going back with four bags which we filled really quickly. It was never ending.” Ms Kernahan is now calling on other locals to help with the clean-ups. “It’s clearly going to be ongoing, so I figured I’d put the word out and ask if people may be interested in joining us for an hour or so once a week down there. “I believe in being the change you want to see … and more hands mean less work.” While she’s lobbied the council in the past, Ms Kernahan said she will ask for bins to be installed along the trail. “There’s such a wonderful wildlife population down there and it would be a shame if something happened to it.” Ms Kernahan has set up a Facebook page for those interested in joining in the clean-ups. A story that is sure to make you laugh It’s long been said that laughter is the best medicine. For comedy duo Jennifer Piper and Belinda Campbell, laughter is also the best way to deal with a bad day. Their new show That Time Everything Went Well And We Were Totally Fine is described as a show for “anyone who’s ever had one of those days”. “It all started out with me and Belinda laughing at some of the bizarre things we both do when we’re overwhelmed,” said Piper. “We wanted to create a show that looks at those horrible feelings of being overwhelmed, anxious or worried, but exaggerate those ideas until they’re funny. “We all do that when we’re telling stories years after the fact, but it can be hard to laugh when you’re in the middle of it all.” But she said there’s also an uplifting message. “Even though we started with anxiety as the fuel for our ridiculous situations, this is not just a play about mental health,” Piper says. “It’s about friendship. It’s about all of the things that make life great, even when it’s tricky.” The show will play at the Bowery Theatre on February 7. The giant automotive company, Repco Ltd, will appear in Sunshine court on February 28 to face alleged noise pollution charges brought against it by the City of Sunshine. In November, the Repco case was adjourned on mutual agreement and since then private negotiations between council and Repco have afforded residents adjacent to the alleged offensive trader considerable advantages.

More than 100 Deer Park residents have demanded their homes be excluded from a heritage study, claiming the recognition would disadvantage them. The residents, all part of an area stretching from Millbank Drive to Station Road which the Brimbank council study had identified as the ICI Housing Estate, say they will fight to reverse the decision to list their homes as historic.

Despite criticism from many in the education industry, Brimbank schools have fared well on the My School website launched last week. The Federal Government initiative, created by the Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority, compares how schools rate in categories such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy.

New estate debate You’ve outgrown the family home and you need extra bedrooms, bathrooms or living areas. Or, perhaps you’re an empty nester, looking to downsize. The debate for the homeowner is more often between the merits – and costs – of renovating versus knocking down and rebuilding from scratch. But, what about the debate between a knockdown-rebuild (KDR), and buying a brand new, turnkey home in a greenfields development? A spokesman for the Housing Industry Association of Australia says the popularity of KDR has been rising since the early 2000s, when land prices began to soar in a market of scarce urban land supply. The greatest benefit of a KDR, he says, is that it allows the owner to stay in the same location, particularly if workplace, schools and your current routines and amenities are important considerations. Over the longer term, a new home in an established suburb should, in principle, have a higher rate of appreciation – something to consider for resale or renting the property out, according to the HIA spokesman. Architect and managing director of Archicentre Peter Georgiev recommends a KDR every time – predictably with the caveat of using an experienced design architect, allowing you to specifically tailor a design to the site, its aspect and your needs. But, a KDR client may be subject to more issues with council approvals, especially if there are design or heritage considerations. In a neighbourhood of mostly single-storey houses, for example, a double-storey house may present issues when it comes to

approval. By contrast, buying new in a residential subdivision is a more seamless process. “A package is easier for you to manage and reduces paperwork [and possibly fees] when it comes to your solicitor and bank,” the HIA spokesman says. “Much of the decision making, which can

potentially equate to stress, is also removed for the buyer.” The other key consideration is infrastructure, with many estates located in emerging areas that don’t have the same infrastructure and amenities as an established suburb. “A potential buyer should think hard

about this when buying their new home, especially if there are children involved,” the HIA cautions. “This can make the difference between enjoying your new home or not.”

SPORT Ladder leading Eagles grind out a victory Sunshine Eagles left it late to dispose of a plucky Melbourne Demons in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. The Eagles were on top all day, but could not ram home the advantage until a four-run eighth inning secured a 7-2 win on the road on Saturday. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton said his side remained calm even with a fragile one-run lead entering the eighth. “We felt pretty good all game,” Clayton said. “It was one of those games where we had a heap of base runners and just didn’t get them over. “The opposition are a good young side and they’re going to be alright in a few years, so it was good to eventually come away with the win.” With an important three game series coming up against Essendon, Sunshine decided to use all four of its pitchers in shorter bursts. Riley Barr started on the mound for two innings, Griffin Weir and Adam Irons threw in middle relief for two innings each and Jeremy

Young closed out the game with the final three innings. It was a strategy that worked to perfection with the only runs conceded coming off Weir and Young. “That was a pre-game plan,” Clayton said. “We’ve got all fresh pitchers for the upcoming series against Essendon. “They’ve got three good pitchers Essendon, so it’s going to be a competitive three-game series no doubt.” Young continues to impress as Sunshine’s closer. Last year’s MVP has been slightly down with his numbers in the batters box, but his pitching has proven invaluable late in games. “He’s a superstar that guy,” Clayton said. “He was the league MVP last year and he just gets it done for you. “He hasn’t been hitting as well this year, but we’ve had to move him around the order. “He’s a gamer, he strives to do the best he can each week.” Sunshine had contributions from top to

bottom of their batting order. The stand out player over the past two weeks has been Russell Letts, who got hit by pitches twice to go with a hit on Saturday and got hit by a pitch the previous week too. “I actually asked the umpire today, ‘does he stand right on the plate?’ and he said ‘no, it’s one of those things where the pitch just happens to go towards him’,” Clayton said. The other dominant Sunshine batter was Josh Byrne, who had three hits. Byrne’s form in the new year has been the icing on the cake for one of the Eagles top outfielders. “Before Christmas, he was struggling with the bat, but his outfielding is very good, he runs the balls down really well,” Clayton said. “Now he’s coming along and hitting the ball pretty good the last couple of games, so that’s a bonus.” Sunshine will head into the Essendon series keen on preserving their spot on top of the ladder. The third-placed YCW was rolled for just 112 – not the ideal score to defend against a Valleys batting unit that is the most potent in the competition. The Valleys are well on their way to the target at 2-77. Nevertheless, it has been a good bounce back season for YCW, who were relegated from division 4 last year after a one-win summer.

If the Blues can find a way to a road victory, they will give themselves a sneaky chance of reaching the finals. A loss though will spell curtains for the Blues’ top four hopes and the final two rounds will be focused on avoiding relegation. With a Callum Guest-inspired 217 on the board and St Albans still requiring 184 with nine wickets in hand, Keilor captain Kaushal Lokuarachchi believes his side is well placed for a successful defence if given similar conditions. “We’ve got the momentum,” he said. “We’ve got to keep going. “If we can get a few early wickets next week, we can defend the runs.” Lokuarachchi was ruing Keilor’s failure to eat further into the St Albans batting line-up. The Saints finished the day on 1-33, but it could have been a whole lot worse. “Ideally we would’ve had two more wickets,” he said. “We missed two chances, one stumping and one catch. “I would’ve liked to have had three down, but I’ll take the one wicket anyway.” Aside from one over of pace from Dinesh Daminda, Keilor opted to use spin for six of the seven overs late in the day. With four spinning options, the Blues will rely heavily on the slow bowling options on day two. Off-spinner Guest already snared one wicket en route to 1-1 off four overs. “The wicket is turning square,” Lokuarachchi said. “We have four spinners, so the game is on our end now.” Keilor’s innings threatened to unravel at 7-84. The saviours for the Blues with the bat were Guest, with 75 not out off 122 balls, including eight fours, and the entertaining Daminda, who made 50 off 44, including six fours and two sixes. “We bat all the way down,” Lokuarachchi said. “I told the boys just to bat, create a few partnerships. “We were in a tough situation and they came out and batted really well.” Guest was the star of the show for Keilor, but he was only given the chance to push on through assistant from tail-ender Nilanka Premaratne, who made 13 valuable runs of his own. “He made a massive contribution,” Lokuarachchi said.

Baseball Sunshine-aligned Allan De San Miguel has announced his retirement from Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League following this year’s playoffs. De San Miguel has been a star catcher for the Aces, but intends to turn to coaching once this season is over. Sunshine coach Stuart Clayton expects that De San Miguel will remain with his side as a player going forward. “The plan is that he’ll continue to stay with us,“ Clayton said. “Next year he’ll probably have some sort of coaching role at the Aces, so he’ll still be involved with them and play with us. “He loves it at the Shiners, he’s said that and he’s got no plans to go anywhere else.“

Bowls Deer Park showed it is the real deal in the Bowls Victoria premier division. The Parkers had their best win of the summer, thumping Altona 92-69 on the road at Civic Parade. Young Keilor diver has his sights set on Olympics Age is not a barrier for young Keilor diving star Jonah Mercieca. Having taken to diving like a fish to water about five years ago, Mercieca has continued to excel in the sport and match it with the best in his age group. Success at both state and national level has seen selectors stand up and take notice. The 12-year-old received a scholarship for the Victorian Institute of Sport junior diving squad. He has also been picked in the ‘Dream2428’ national diving squad which consists of athletes who have the potential to have success at either the 2024 or 2028 Olympics. Mercieca said it was a big shock to be included in both squads and he was proud to achieve it. At the VIS, he is one day short of being the youngest in the squad and among the youngest divers they’ve ever had.

“The VIS feels quite good and a bit different to how everything else has been,” he said. “This morning at training Mack Horton [Olympic gold medalist] was training. “It makes me more motivated and inspired. I’m doing more training. I’m doing eight sessions a week and over the holidays I’m doing 10 sessions a week.” Mercieca attended a national training camp with the Dream2428 squad late last year in Queensland. “There were so many other divers and we got to do activities and do some training,” he said. “We were training with different coaches from around Australia.” The selections come after a big 12 months of diving. He finished second on the platform at the 2019 Australian Elite Junior Championships in a thrilling final. He lost by two and half points,

despite being a bottom age diver. He also competed at the Victorian Open diving championships and attempted to be the youngest ever to get a qualifying score for the open age National championships. He missed out by less than a point. That has motivated him to try and do even better this time around. This year he’s hoping to make the Australian nationals, which also doubles as the Olympic qualifiers. “When I started, I never thought anything like this would happen,” he said. “I’ve been looking at results and there’s some kids from other countries who are 13 or 14 and going to world cups and smashing adults from a young age. “Hopefully this year I’ll get to the Olympic trials. It will be a big experience for me and will be fun.” Tara Murray

The judges cast their eyes over hundreds of submissions last year and they were the chosen ones. There will be recognition for the two place getters, who will each walk away with $2500, while two encouragement awards of $1000 will be presented. October – Lucas Rocci (football) A true leader at a young age, Rocci was given the honour of captaining the Western Jets, and did it with aplomb. Rocci took out the NAB League’s highest award, the Morrish Medal. November - Reba Stewart (taekwondo) Stewart had an unforgettable year on the taekwondo mat. She won gold medals at the Australian Open, Oceania Championships and Pacific Games, while a top 16 finish at the open age world championships was an incredible feat for an 18 year old.

Home grown player joins Western United The January transfer window is a busy period for most A-League clubs and Western United has been no different, taking part for the fi rst time. United has seen fi rst team players Connor Chapman, Scott McDonald and Ersan Gulum depart the club. Chapman moved to South Korea to join Pohang Steelers, McDonald crossed to the Brisbane Roar and Gulum returned to Turkey. A focus so far for Western United with its incomings has been shoring up its defence. Talented youngster Oskar Dillon, brought in from the Gold Coast Knights, has already made an impression on the left side of the defence. In a bid to bolster their central defence, United has looked much closer to home with western suburbs born and raised Tomi Uskok signing an 18-month deal. Uskok, born in Williamstown and raised in Werribee, is no stranger to the A-League, having played with Central Coast Mariners in 2015-16. Locally, the 28-year-old is better known for his impact for Melbourne Knights in the National Premier League. It is not lost on Western United coach Mark Rudan the importance of claiming a player from the club’s heartland in Melbourne’s west. “We’re delighted to give another NPL talent a chance to show what he can do at the highest level,” Rudan said. “Tomi is a local western Melbourne product, which makes for a great story and it’s important for our club. “Having worked with Tomi before, he has all the attributes to contribute to our club and we’re looking forward to seeing Tomi make the most of this opportunity with us.” Uskok is eager for the opportunity to return to the A-League with Western United. Despite its compact dimensions Venue feels like a larger vehicle. Entry is relatively easy and seats are comfortable and supportive. The top outputs of 90kW and 151Nm come in at high rpm levels of 6300 and 4850 respectively so Venue seemed aimed at pleasing keen drivers. Automatic versions have a Sport mode in addition to Eco and Normal settings. Hyundai Venue only weighs between 1140kg and 1225kg depending on the variant so itâ€™s still quite agile around town and cruises comfortably in motorway conditions. Fuel consumption is listed at 7.0 litres per 100 km with the manual gearbox and 7.2 L/100 km from the auto. During our test in the Active auto we averaged 8.1 overall.
