Celebrating Australia Day About 180 residents of Brimbank will take the pledge and become our newest citizens this Australia Day. The major ceremony will take place at the Kevin Wheelahan Gardens on Devonshire Road, Sunshine from 8am. Sunshine loses its voice A western suburbs institution said goodbye last week. At 12pm on January 16, community radio station Stereo 974 Sunshine ceased transmission. Management at the station confirmed the closure to Star Weekly, but declined to make comment. It’s understood that escalating costs and a lack of funding support led to the closure.

The station had been struggling to secure advertisers for a number of months. Management had been calling on the public to donate in order to keep the volunteer-run station on air. The closure ends a storied history for the station, which was one of the longest established community broadcasters in the state. The station was founded in 1978 and operated in North Sunshine for two decades. It had humble beginnings, initially

broadcasting from a shipping container, but has been on air 24 hours a day, seven days a week since it began transmitting. In 1998 the station moved to its site in Geelong Road, Brooklyn, where it remained until its closure last week. While times have been tough for the community radio station, it still played a vital role for the community. In 2010 it was formally recognised as official emergency broadcaster for the region. In a message posted on the station’s website,

general manager Rod Boyd said a number of local councils have published and distributed leaflets and fridge magnets advising residents that they should tune into the station for up-to-date information should an emergency occur. He said there are in excess of 23 major hazardous sites located in the station’s broadcast area. The station also catered for the region’s diverse population with ethnic language programs making up a third of its broadcast time.

Green space in the heart of Sunshine A new civic green in the heart of Sunshine’s Hampshire Road is a step closer to reality, with construction expected to begin in mid-February. The $5.47 million civic green development – between Devonshire Road and Bennett Place – will be an inviting

public space for local residents and visitors alike. 2Construct Pty Ltd was recently awarded the contract to create the space which will be used for larger cultural events and as a safe space for social gatherings. The works will add new road surfacing, feature paving to footpaths, extensive tree planting, a lawn area, better seating and lighting, and two new raised pedestrian crossings – along with more space for footpath trading.

Hampshire Road will remain open to traffic once works are completed, with one lane in each direction – similar to Hampshire Road south of Devonshire Road. During construction, some temporary road closures will be necessary, however detours will be in place and the community will be notified prior to any closures. The civic green development will be funded through Council’s 2019/20 and 2020/2021 capital works budgets.

Two illegal brothels shut down By Tate Papworth Private investigators hired by Brimbank council to smash the municipality’s illegal sex trade have brought about the closure of two brothels. In December the council took cases against the two premises located in Deer Park and St Albans to the Sunshine Magistrate’s Court and were successful in both matters. Both sites claimed to be legitimate massage businesses, however the court found they were both operating as illegal brothels. The Deer Park site was ordered to pay all council’s costs,

totalling $4000. The figure includes the cost of the external investigators and the council’s legal representation and the fees to lodge the matter at the Magistrate’s Court. The St Albans site was also ordered to pay costs, which are yet to be agreed upon. The council is seeking the full costs.

Under the judgement both premises can still operate for their legal purpose but not as brothels. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou said it was vindication for the decision to hire private investigators. “Council is very pleased to have two successful prosecutions on the board so far,” she said. “This legal decision is a win for our community, who have flagged concerns about massage parlours operating as illegal brothels. “With these prosecution wins, we’re sending a clear message that council is very serious about taking stronger action against illegal

operations in Brimbank.” Officers have also commenced investigations on a number of other premises that are suspected of operating as illegal brothels, and say they will be pursuing these in the future. When the council endorsed the decision to hire investigators in May last year, it said there were as many as 14 illegal brothels operating within its boundaries. While the council is forking out $36,000 for the investigators, it says it can’t fight the problem alone and has called on the state government to provide better resources for Victoria Police to address and close down illegal brothels.

Sunshine RSL celebrates a century It’s 1919, World War I has just concluded and a number of returned servicemen have gathered at a miniature rifle range on Hampshire Road. Among the chatter an idea to form an RSL sub-branch for Sunshine emerges. With the help of the community, the Sunshine RSL was quickly established and has endured ever since. It’s a place with much history and next month it’s set to notch a major milestone when it turns 100. Sunshine RSL president Garry Collins

believes the RSL is one of the oldest in the state and said a number of things were planned to mark the occasion. “One of the big things to mark our 100th anniversary will be the dinner we’re having on February 9,” Mr Collins said. “We’ve done a ring-around and invited all our veterans and we’re expecting over 40 of them to attend.” The occasion was also marked at a major bowls tournament on Saturday, where members of the community, other clubs and officials celebrated the RSL and had a cake cutting

ceremony. While an important part of the community, Mr Collins said the club was always looking for more members. “Some people don’t really want much to do with the RSL when they return, I’ve found that it’s something that with time people come to, but new members are always welcome. “We’re a bit light on for committee members at the moment, so we’re always on the lookout for them too.” Tate Papworth

Time is running out for residents and businesses to connect to the NBN. Retirement of copper services in parts of Kings Park commenced last week. The retirement marks the final phase for residents and businesses in Kings Park, St Albans, Burnside and Keilor to connect to the NBN fibre network and avoid disconnection of their fi xed services. Telstra acting regional general manager, Marcus Swinburne, said there is a misconception among some in the community that the disconnection of copper services will not affect landline telephone services. “Some households who are yet to move across to the NBN currently only have a landline phone. We’re concerned some still believe that voice services aren’t affected by the NBN,” he said. “We are encouraging community members to check in on loved ones and elderly neighbours to make sure they are fully prepared for the impending disconnection of copper services. “We also believe many of the remaining premises yet to make the switch are local businesses. “We know how important a working phone, data and internet connection is to a business so we’re strongly urging remaining businesses to act today.” Those yet to make the switch are urged to consider their fixed phone and broadband needs, so they can select an appropriate NBN plan and provider. Police swiftly arrested six teenage boys following an armed robbery at a bottle shop last week. It’s alleged one of the teenagers took a slab of beer and walked out of the store and another jumped onto the counter and allegedly produced a machete while the others stole more alcohol. Rain wreaks havoc

Big boost planned for pain relief

By Tate Papworth Much needed rainfall hit the state last Wednesday and while it offered relief for fire ravaged areas, it brought destruction to parts of Brimbank. St Albans was lashed with a 77mm downpour within the space of an hour, while Keilor received 45mm and Sunshine North 34. The Brimbank SES unit was the busiest in the central region, receiving 100 requests for assistance. Most of its call outs were for St Albans (29), Hillside (20) and Taylors Lakes (17). Across the central district crews were called to a total of 369 requests for assistance with building damage (138), flooding (102) and fallen trees (96) the main causes of concern. Brimbank Shopping Centre was also impacted, forced to close early after the heavy rain caused the roof to cave in and water to flood into the centre. A handful of stores received minor damage, but the centre was back open for business at 9am Thursday. A spokesman at the Bureau of Meteorology said St Albans received the most rainfall of anywhere in the state. “The 77mm at St Albans was the highest of anywhere in the state. I’t pretty rare. We see flash storm events from time to time, but that amount of rainfall is significant,“ he said. “Most fell within the space of an hour and we even had a 15-minute period where 33mm fell.“ But there were amazing scenes across the municipality. At Watergardens Town Centre the usually docile Taylors Creek was running rapidly, suburban streets resembled creeks and a sinkhole opened up at a Keilor home.

The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) is committing $1 million towards chronic pain. The health network estimates that 3.2 million adults currently live with chronic pain and that number is forecast to double over the next 30 years. It says a need exists for better services to support individuals to effectively manage their pain and is committing $1million to a new tender to fill the gap in chronic pain management in primary health care settings. The tender is for new services across two regions, north and western Melbourne, with $500,000 being committed to each. They will involve teams of health professionals from different disciplines working with people who experience chronic pain. NWMPHN chief executive Adjunct Associate Professor Chris Carter said that with the number of individuals living with chronic pain increasing, a program such as this is greatly needed. “The percentage of individuals living with chronic pain is increasing rapidly and often these individuals are not diagnosed or treated for the side effects that can accompany chronic pain, such as social anxieties and the loss of independence,” he said. Unpaid super blasts a hole in workers’ savings

Brimbank workers are among Melbourne’s hardest hit when it comes to unpaid superannuation. Industry Super Australia claims Victorians are being robbed of more than $1.4 billion in unpaid super a year. The company analysed ATO data from 2016-17 which it says shows more than 800,000 Victorians have not received their legal super entitlement – almost one in three workers. On average the state’s workers are ripped off

- Matt Linden about $1,750 a year in super. The Sydenham electorate was ranked 12th in the state for unpaid super, with 11,275 people underpaid and $16.72 million owing. St Albans came in at 37 with 9,120 underpaid and $10.90 million owing. The Footscray electorate, which encompasses

parts of Sunshine, ranked 10th with 11,705 people underpaid and $18.57 million owing. Industry Super Australia deputy chief executive Matt Linden called on both the state and federal governments to take action and legislate that super be paid each pay day. “The only way to put this $1.4 billion super rip-off to an end is for the federal government to make super payable on payday,” he said. “The Victorian government can add its voice to fix this problem once and for all. Across the state almost a third of Victorian workers are having their super stolen, no area is immune.

“Unpaid super blasts a hole in workers’ savings, making a huge difference to their quality of life in retirement.” “With such little enforcement action taken against those responsible for the unpaid super scandal it is time for Victoria’s federal and state politicians to act.” Industry Super Australia welcomed the Victorian government’s push to create laws that criminally punish workers who don’t pay wages, superannuation and other entitlements, but said the problem could be fixed once and for all with federal intervention.

Having a ball of fun cadet at the 2018 Open, when she first got the itch to try being a ball kid. It took more than eight months of trials and training against 3000 other hopefuls to land a spot on the Australian Open roster, and while this could be her last year serving the balls to the players, she hopes to stay involved in the Open somehow for a while yet. “I’m looking into doing a third year,” she said. “It’s only 12 to 15 years old for the ball kids, but there’s a lot of other roles like court services and lines people so I’d love to stay involved somehow. “It’s just such a great opportunity and I really recommend it to anyone.”

Madelyn Hartley has already experienced the big stage of the Australian Open, and she will be back to do it all again this week. The Taylors Hill 14-year-old is suiting up for her second stint as a ball kid at summer’s biggest tennis event, and while she doesn’t play the game herself she’s still excited to rub shoulders with the greats of the game. “It’s pretty amazing to be up so close to these players,” she said. “(Roger) Federer would be my favourite player. I got to do one of his games last year, and he’s so nice on court and a great player. The atmosphere on Rod Laver for that game last year was just electric, it was a pretty surreal experience. “This year I’m hoping to get a (Rafael) Nadal, (Novak) Djokovich or (Ash) Barty game, it would be great to be on court with some of those guys.” Madelyn worked as a St Johns Ambulance

Lumbar and Co Coffee co-owner Fraser Clark is seeking expressions of interests from locals and has grand plans for the site. “We want to find out if the locals are interested,” he said. “Everyone tells me they have to drive to Bacchus Marsh and places an hour a way from this area. I wouldn’t mind showcasing local people and the things they create.”

Mr Clark wants to hold the markets once a month and said there’s plenty of room to grow. “I want to showcase local. If people are making chutneys, t-shirts, things like that, then I want to hear from them,” he said. “We’ll have music, food, face painting, the whole package. “Looking around I think I could fit 50. My goal it to grow it that big so it goes mental.” Mr Clark said he needs about 20 stalls to get the idea off the ground. “The best way to show interest is to come down and have a look.

“I’ve never done this kind of stuff before so if anyone has any ideas or pointers that would be fantastic.” The cafe will also be playing host to an Australia Day function. Mr Clark encouraged as many people as possible to come down to add to the atmosphere. “We’ll have live music, sausage sizzles, face painting and things like that,” he said. “It’ll also be a bit of a fundraiser to help support the bushfire appeal. It’s not a money making thing for us, it’s about creating an atmosphere and helping out a good cause.”

A local optometrist is raising awareness of the benefits of outdoor time for children’s eyes. A study conducted by YouGov Galaxy, Kids Eye Health Study in October 2019 suggests that most Brimbank children are spending more than double the amount of time indoors on screens than the World Health Organisation recommendation. Specsavers Taylors Lakes Optometrist Andrew Arnell said: “I understand how strong the pull of digital screens is for children and I also know that the way children learn and play is drastically changing as technology becomes increasingly incorporated into everyday life. “It’s no surprise that 90 per cent of Victorian parents say digital screen time is top of the list for their children’s health concerns.” However he said screen time wasn’t the sole contributor. “What is surprising for many is that when it comes to eye health, the biggest problem with screen time is nothing to do with the actual screens,” he said. “It’s simply the fact that normally when kids are on screens like phones and computers, there is a lot of near vision work that is often indoors without natural light. “The biggest message I would like to get across to parents is to make sure their children spend time outside playing and if parents are worried about the impacts of screen time on their child’s eye health.” Tate Papworth

Fireworks warning for pet owners By Tate Papworth

Pet owners are being urged to secure their pets with upcoming fireworks displays scheduled for Australia Day. The RSPCA says dogs in particular are prone to running away after becoming spooked by the noise. Dogs have been known to jump through plate glass windows to escape loud noises, and easily jump over, or dig their way under fences that would normally contain them. The animal welfare organisation says keeping your dog indoors if possible is the best course of action. It also encouraged pet owners to ensure their

microchips were updated. Sunshine resident Harry Verveniotis knows the pain of losing a loved animal all too well and urged others not to make the same mistake. “On New Years Eve our much loved Italian Greyhound Lucia escaped due to the fireworks and is yet to be found,” he said. “We have mounted a massive campaign to find her, but nothing has come up.” “The house was secure and we had her inside, but all it took was a split second in lapse of judgement and she was gone. She was spooked and just ran.” Mr Verveniotis’ campaign to find Lucia has been extensive. He’s heavily targeted Facebook and Instagram through organic and paid advertising, has

Vandals strike another park

We’re all part of the story.

Vandals have damaged another Brimbank Park. Earlier this month part of the play equipment at Padley Park in St Albans was set alight. The council was forced to fence off the area to make it safe until it can be fixed. It’s not the first time a Brimbank park has been hit by vandals. In November last year a number of mature trees at The Lakes Reserve in Taylors Lakes were the subject of continued acts of vandalism. The senseless act came in the middle of a Brimbank council funded $3.34 million upgrade to the park. MY BRIMBANK Richard Holman has a formidable resume in the tennis world. After spending time in the UK he is now plying his trade in Brimbank with Dane Nebel’s Tennis Academy. He spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I provide tennis coaching services at the North Sunshine Tennis Club. The club is operated by a passionate volunteer committee, who work closely with the Brimbank council to promote tennis to the local community. What do you like best about the area? In my time as a coaching provider, I have found the participants to be very friendly and very supportive of each other. Everyone we meet seems so genuine and caring. We have already built mutually beneficial relationships with other local sporting clubs and businesses, their support has been really helpful to get us off the ground at North Sunshine. Brimbank also has great cultural diversity, it is fantastic to see everyone from different cultural backgrounds enjoying tennis together. Tell us about the tennis academy. We have always been based in the western suburbs of Melbourne, and it is fantastic to now provide coaching services at North Sunshine Tennis Club, further expanding our reach in this fantastic area. With the pathways that have been put in place this allows the student to pursue their tennis whether that be on a social level or through to professional ranks. I was working in the east of Melbourne for seven years. I loved working there, but the commute to Sunshine is better. I’m a westy, so it’s nice to work where my heart is. I like the idea of trying to build Sunshine up. There was nobody at the tennis club when I started and now we’ve got

about 25. Tell us about your career. I’ve been coaching for about 15 years. I’m from the UK originally and coached there for about seven to eight years. I think it’s a lot about building rapport with people. I think that’s a

major strength of mine. In 2016 I completed the Tennis Australia Club Professional coaching course. Prior to coaching I undertook a degree in Sport Psychology in the UK. And tell us a little about the open day. We’re inviting the community to come and

While there’s a lot to look forward to in 2020, it’s difficult to see beyond the devastation our country is currently experiencing. The destruction caused by the bushfires across Australia is shocking and absolutely heartbreaking to say the least. The courage and dedication all the emergency services volunteers have displayed in the face of such terrifying circumstances is beyond admirable. I’m very proud of the support our residents have shown for those who have been impacted by these catastrophic emergencies. These communities have lost everything and need assistance now more than ever. I know many of you are wondering

what you can do to help. At the moment, a number of organisations are advising that the best way to help is to donate money – anything you can spare will go a long way to helping the local residents, volunteers and wildlife fight this battle and recover. Like millions of people around the world, I have been deeply affected by the horrific bushfires that have plagued Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia since late 2019. The loss of life, native flora and fauna, is devastating, and there seems to be little respite for residents, firefighters and volunteers. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, especially the firies who have fought tirelessly to save lives and property under hellish conditions. In January 1985, our own community was scarred by bushfires when a devastating blaze tore through Melton, destroying 14 homes, damaging more than a hundred more, and decimating hundreds of acres of land. Those who lived here at the time will remember the swift severity of the fire that, didn’t claim any lives, despite

being fanned by 100 km/h winds. When the danger passed, people from surrounding communities rallied to provide much needed support to those affected by the fire, and now, it’s our turn to support the families and business owners who have lost so much in this current catastrophe. Once the danger passes, I urge residents to repay the generosity shown our community 35 years ago, and visit these towns, support their local economies and help people get back on their feet. Happy lunar New Year 2020 Chinese New Year – this year on January 25 – will be a time of joyful celebration, marked by the exchange of special gifts. The most popular and best known gift is the traditional red packet (hóngbao) stuffed with money. Red, yellow and gold are considered lucky in China, so when choosing a gift these colours assume special importance as they represent wealth and prosperity. Colours to avoid include white, which is symbolic of funerals; and black or blue, both of which are synonymous with death. Something else to consider is the Chinese superstition about specific numbers. For example, never give an amount of money that includes a four because the pronunciation of four is very close to death. It’s the same for gifts – never give sets of four of anything. Other even numbers are usually a safe choice, the luckiest being the number 8 – making a number such as 88 the ideal amount to put into a hóngbao. Passing on good wishes and luck for the coming year is just as important as gift or cash exchanges during Chinese New Year, each with their own traditions and etiquette. Here are some basic rules to follow in the giving and receiving of gifts: 1. To show respect and appreciation to the giver, receive (and offer) the gift with two hands, a custom used across China when buying something. 2. If giving money, make sure it’s crisp and new. It shows disrespect to give old or torn notes. 3. Always start by presenting a gift to the oldest or most senior family member in a group setting. 4. It’s thought bad manners to immediately open a gift in front of the giver. Thanks will be expressed but the gift put aside to open later in private. Some objects are never suitable as a Chinese New Year gift and could cause inadvertent offence. These include: Scissors: A sharp object as a gift signifies you want to end a relationship. Shoes: The word for shoes sounds exactly like a word for bad luck or evil. Handkerchiefs: People generally give handkerchiefs at the end of a funeral,. Clocks: The words “giving a clock” sounds like “attending a funeral ritual”. Pears: The word for pears sounds the same as the word for leaving or parting. Cut flowers: These are normally given at funerals especially white flowers and yellow chrysanthemums which signify death. Umbrellas: Giving someone an umbrella insinuates your relationship with them has fallen apart. Mirrors: Believed to attract malicious ghosts. Carole Levy

SPORT Saints find form and thrive in rivalry games St Albans is cock-a-hoop after starting the new year with two road wins over long time rivals in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Saints are back in the finals reckoning after celebrating one-day wins over Sunshine United and Druids. Their latest victory, a 122-run mauling of Druids at Shorten Reserve on Saturday, saw them push into fourth place with three rounds to go in the season. “Two wins away to the old rivals, Sunshine United and Druids, were huge,” Saints captain Rob Nikolic said. “Those rivalries go back a long time. “The old blokes came down and watched and it puts us in the top four.” St Albans was in the box seat after posting a commanding 6-257 off 40 overs. Simon Lambert kick-started the Saints innings with 36 at the top of the order. But it was a 109-run partnership between Arosh Janoda (62 off 71) and Geeth Alwis (70

off 78) that got the Saints on top in the game. Both batsmen scored at a rapid rate, but did so smartly and with little risk. Once that partnership was broken, Thilina Masmulla joined Alwis for a 61-run stand. There was plenty of fireworks in their partnership with Masmulla’s 58 coming off just 39 balls. While there were plenty of boundaries in both partnerships, including three sixes to Alwis, two to Masmulla and one to Janoda, it was impressive how they all worked into their innings, laying a platform before launching. “We really focused on not losing wickets in clumps,” Nikolic said. “If we lose one wicket, we start again and try a build a new partnership. “Blokes like Arosh, Geeth and Masmulla, where they get in, they’re unstoppable, so I just say to them take your time.” While they had a big score on the board, St Albans never took their foot off the throats of Druids.

Lions’ season on the line By Lance Jenkinson Taylors Lakes has a blueprint to follow after observing how Yarraville’s batsmen constructed their innings in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday. The Lions have been set a gettable 162 for victory when play resumes on a crucial second day this Saturday that could see them get back into the top six mix with a win or just about kiss goodbye their finals hopes with a loss. Lions captain Jarrod Wakeling said his side must bat with a plan to successfully chase down the target. “We’ve got to prepare for the same conditions in that the pitch will do a little bit,” he said. “We’re well aware of what they did well. “They were very patient and the guys that made runs for them played very straight and just kind of sweated on the bad balls. “If we adopt what their run scorers did, 160 on our ground is certainly achievable.” Taylors Lakes took the honours on day one thanks to their stellar bowling. Conceding a mere 2.26 runs per over after losing the toss and having to bowl was undoubtedly a win for the Lions. Wakeling joked that he had only won “probably two tosses in two years and funnily enough lost it again”, but this was not a bad coin toss to lose. “It was one of those tosses that you don’t mind losing,” he said. “The pitch was a tiny bit green and we didn’t really know what to expect from it. “At the start of the day, if you had’ve told me they would make around 160 all out, I would’ve taken it. “We’re relatively happy with the way that the game is positioned at the moment.” It could have even been better for Taylors Lakes. The Lions had Yarraville on the ropes at 7-105, but could not land a significant blow that might have crippled the batting line-up. “We dropped a catch, which was disappointing and they got a bit of a partnership on and scraped through to 160 odd,” Wakeling said. It was a fair bit of heavy lifting for Wakeling, who was nursing a slight calf strain, but he wanted no sympathy. “Bowling off six or seven steps is not that strenuous,” he said with a laugh.

Rusty Sunshine gets the win after early scare Sunshine overcame an early fright before powering away for a 7-3 win over Melbourne to kick-start their new year in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 competition. The Eagles were the stand-out team prior to Christmas, finishing phase one of the campaign on top of the table, but there is always a worry that momentum can be lost over the mid-season break. Any early concerns were put to rest when the Eagles finally took the lead in the game with a three-run sixth inning blitz. “It was a little bit scary early when they got three runs in the first,” Eagles coach Stuart Clayton said. “They got two or three nice hits and then we made a couple of fielding errors. “We just sort of pegged them back one run an innings and then we put a three-spot up in the sixth inning and another one in the seventh. “They were a bit rusty the boys and they’ll be

better for the run. “It was a good win just to get the season back going.” Clayton lauded the baseball smarts of his Sunshine team. Bit by bit, the Eagles edged their way back into the game after staring a three-run deficit in the face, scoring runs in the first, second and fourth innings. “No one panicked,” Clayton said. “We did a good job of moving runners over and pretty much everyone had a hit. “It was good team batting, good team play.” Clayton praised the efforts of his lower order batters. Josh Bryne, Russell Letts and Jason Tutt regularly got on base to give the top of the order chances to put runs on the board. “It’s a key to us that if our seven, eight and nine hitters can get on the bases for our top order hitters to bat them in, that makes us a

Jeremy Young was flawless in the remaining four innings to ensure the Eagles held their advantage. While it was far from a complete performance from Sunshine, it did the job of getting rid of the cobwebs from the mid-season break. “When you’re going so well and you have three weeks off, you just never know how you’re going to come back,” Clayton said. “We worked our way into it and I think we’ll be better for the game.” Sunshine will round out its short two game series with Melbourne away at Surrey Park on Saturday. The week’s break did wonders for Western United. United had a collective pep in its step when it returned to the field for Sunday’s 3-0 win over Central Coast Mariners in the A-League at GMHBA Stadium. The spark that had been missing in recent games was recaptured as United banged in three goals in a 21-minute blitz to start the game to put the result beyond doubt. United coach Mark Rudan said the opportunity for his team to exhale, refresh, reflect and project over the bye round was invaluable. “It was good to reflect and speak about where we want to go in the second half of the season,” Rudan said. “The atmosphere and the culture around the place, the vibe around the place, the last week and a half, the last 10 days, has been absolutely superb. “The boys are coming in with a smile on their face. “They want to have a really big crack at this in the second half of the season. “You can see that through their performance.” Western United produced one of its best halves of the season in the opening 45. United’s one-touch football, team build up and finishing was mouth watering. Burgess did it all, taking players on in isolated situations, leading United’s counter-attacking play and delivering to the forwards with precision. Western United is up to fifth on the ladder after the win. United will play sixth-placed Adelaide United in what should be an Australia Day cracker at the VU Whitten Oval on Sunday at 6pm.
