Festivals aid fire fund The Brimbank community is digging deep to help those affected by the devastating Victorian bushfires. Fundraising efforts have continued in earnest since the bushfire crisis worsened earlier this month. At the recent St Albans Lunar Festival volunteers raised a staggering $20,000. Members of the Quang Minh Temple and the Vietnamese traders played a significant role in taking collections, while firefighters from St Albans dropped by to rattle the tins. Fundraising efforts in St Albans were so

successful that the campaign will continue at the Footscray, Richmond, Box Hill and Braybrook Lunar New Year Festival celebrations this month. Member for St Albans Natalie Suleyman said it was an amazing show of community spirit. “Thank you to St Albans and Quang Minh Temple Volunteers – an amazing result raising $20,000 for the bushfire appeal so far,” Ms Suleyman said. “Our thoughts are with the communities affected by the fires.” Brimbank council contributed $10,000 to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou said it was only fitting the council contribute.

“The fires in the eastern and north-eastern part of our state have led to terrible loss of life, property, livestock and wildlife and our hearts go out to the community members and emergency services fighting so hard at this time,” Cr Papafotiou said. “We’re feeling the pain of the communities who are affected and want to do what we can to assist.” There will be a number of collection boxes set up across multiple council facilities where members of the public can donate to the fund. Brimbank libraries are calling on local crafters to make pouches for baby joeys, koalas and other affected wildlife who have lost their

homes or have been injured by the fires, while a number of local sporting clubs have arranged charity matches. Emergency workers have also played their part. Members of the St Albans fire brigade and the Brimbank SES were deployed to fire-affected areas and remain on watch. Brimbank SES member Bernie Thatcher said there was still a way to go. “Three of our members went on deployment to the fires. They went to a couple of different towns, but all sort of stuck together as part of a taskforce,” Ms Thatcher said. “As far as we know there will probably be a lot more members deployed for the clean-up after.”

Truck fire prompts recycling warning Fire investigators believe the blaze was started by a mobile phone which was incorrectly discarded in the waste. Council acting operations manager Rishi Viner said it was important that all households remain careful about discarding e-waste correctly. “E-waste, or electronic waste, does pose a fire risk which is one of the reasons why it is banned from landfill and all kerbside bins,“ Mr Viner said. “It’s important to note that e-waste can and should be recycled at council’s free drop-off point at the Melton Recycling Facility.

“We urge residents to be mindful of how they dispose of all waste. By putting only accepted items in the recycling bin, you will help avoid contaminating the load and ensure more waste is diverted from landfill. “Council’s recycling service is much more effective when residents ensure that only the right things go into the appropriate bins.” It is the second time in less than two years that a council recycling truck has caught fire, with a similar incident occurring in Caroline Springs in February, 2018.

A Melton truck driver had to think on his feet last week, when a fire started in the back of his truck while collecting rubbish. The incident occurred in Brookfield on January 2, when the driver noticed that his truck had caught fire while making collections of household recycling. He found a nearby park to dump the load, before a fire crew attended to extinguish the blaze. The waste was cleared later that day. While the driver was unharmed, the truck sustained some damage. The recycling load had to be sent to landfill because of contamination from the fire.

SES tight for space Brimbank’s SES unit is looking for a new home. The unit has 52 members and is struggling to fit them into its tiny premises in Keilor Park. Brimbank SES unit member Phillip Jordan said space constraints were becoming an issue. “We’re struggling for size. There’s probably about 30 active members and we’re struggling with [having] room for training,” he said. “We’re fortunate that we have the area around us to train in, we can use the lunchroom here, but it’s a bit tight to get 30-40 people in at a time to train in different sections.” Mr Jordan said plans for a new base had been in the works for a while, but finding a location was easier said than done. “We’ve been searching for a bigger space for a while now, but land is a bit tight around the City of Brimbank,” he said.

A record 27 babies were born in a 24-hour period at the newly-built Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital last month. Following the hectic period, Western Health chief executive Russell Harrison said staff were feeling “a little exhausted, but also excited and amazed” at the incredible number of births occurring at the Joan Kirner. The hospital has the capacity to birth 7020 babies per year – from May 15 to December 31, 2019, staff at the hospital birthed 3717 babies, including the record 24-hour period on December 19. The hospital’s divisional director Adele Mollo said, based on the current birth rate, the hospital is projecting a birth rate of just over 6000 – a 6 per cent increase on the previous year. With so many babies born at the Shunshine hospital, it was only fitting that the top baby names for 2019 were revealed there last week. Oliver and Olivia continue to hold the top spot for most popular baby names. Oliver has been the most popular boys name for six years, with 537 little ones given the moniker last year. Jack, Noah, William, Thomas, Leo, Lucas, Charlie, Henry and Ethan rounded out the top 10 names for boys There were 419 new Olivias named last year, the most popular girls name for the second year in a row. Mia, Charlotte, Amelia, Isla, Ava, Chloe, Zoe, Ruby and Harper made up the 10. Visiting the hospital, Acting Attorney General Ben Carroll said he always takes interest in the top names. “The birth of a baby is a wonderful and special time for parents – but settling on what little bub will be named is not always an easy decision,” Mr Carroll said. “It’s always fascinating to learn why parents have chosen a particular name for their child, whether it is because they simply like the name, or because it has cultural or significant family ties.”

Brimbank Council supports bushﬁre relief Brimbank Council is kicking off its support towards Victorian bushfire relief by donating $10,000 on behalf of the Brimbank community to support those devastated by the ongoing fires in the east of the State. Collection tins are also located in a number of Council facilities and any donation amount is welcome. Donations will go to the Gippsland Emergency Relief Fund, a registered charity that provides immediate short-term funds to Gippslanders affected by a natural disaster event.

As part of our relief support, Council will also absorb any event permit fees for community groups and community members who wish to hold fundraising events supporting registered and not-for-profit organisations that provide bushfire relief funding or activities. We are also planning a community movie and barbecue event on Australia Day night at Kevin Wheelahan Gardens, as another opportunity for gold coin donations.

Brimbank crime on the rise By Tate Papworth Criminal offences rose marginally in Brimbank for the year ending September 2019, but the municipality’s offence rate remains well above the state average. There were 18,987 criminal offences recorded in Brimbank in the 12 months to September 2019, up 0.9 per cent on the previous year. But the offence rate per 100,000 population for Brimbank was 9031, well above the Victorian average rate of 8024.

Of the total offences recorded, 40 per cent (7639) remain unsolved, while 9344 have resulted in arrest or summons. St Albans has the highest rate of criminal offences with 3743, followed by Sunshine (3441), Taylors Lakes (1636), Deer Park (1477) and Sunshine West (1263). Sunshine had a significant spike in offences recorded, with 561 more than for the same period in 2018. Family violence incidents across Brimbank rose by 6.6 per cent. There were 2857 offences

recorded, 2144 of which were against women. “Other theft” offences had the biggest spike, up 2189 from 1781 in the previous year. Stealing from a motor vehicle (1993), breach family violence order (1690), criminal damage (1233) and obtain benefit by deception (1025) rounded out the top five offence groups. There was also a rise in assault and related offences, up to 1649 compared to 1581 for the previous year. Stalking and harassment offences rose from 466 to 506, while robbery rose from 269 to 317.

Offences occurring at service stations rose sharply to 1201 from 770 in 2018, while houses remained the top location for criminal offences with 4233 occuring at a residential property. There was a significant decline in drug offences, with drug use and possession offences falling from 1031 to 895. There were also two fewer drug dealing and trafficking offences than in the previous 12 months. There were also fewer homicides, with six recorded – the lowest number for the Brimbank area since 2012.

A large quantity of cash and stolen items were recovered during a warrant at a residence in Albion last week. Three people were arrested as part of Operation Galeforce, which concentrated on offences committed in the Melbourne CBD and the public transport network. A 38-year-old man and 32-year-old woman, both from Sri Lanka, and a 25-year-old man from India were all arrested and charged with theft offences and proceeds of crime. They have each been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on April 14.

School aid for students A Sunshine based company is calling on the community to help it ensure children from refugee and migrant backgrounds make the right start at school. Until the end of February, the Refugee Migrant Children Centre (RMCC) is holding an educational material aid drive for recently resettled children within Victoria. Organisers say starting school for the first time in a new country, without friends and not knowing what is expected, can be overwhelming and daunting. As such, RMCC is on the hunt for good quality items such as stationery, backpacks, dictionaries and calculators. RMCC chief executive Alice said the concept is inspired by her own journey.

“Picture a year 10 student who is talented at math but they don’t own the needed calculator as their family can’t afford one. “They aren’t able to complete their math homework and each morning before class they frantically try to finish off their work with one of their classmates’ calculators. “This student was me, and the day my family was able to afford to buy me one of those fancy calculators it was an exciting day. Many cars make light work By Tate Papworth A multi-deck carpark in Sunshine is the latest Brimbank building to make the move to solar energy. An 82-kilowatt solar system has been installed on the top level of the council-owned carpark on George Street. The power generated by the solar panels will provide nearly all the electricity required for the carpark as well as powering electric vehicles set to be added to the Brimbank council’s fleet.

Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the solar installation was a big step towards helping the council reach its renewable energy goals. “This is a great initiative that will provide free, clean and renewable electricity, the equivalent to the annual power needs of 26 houses,” Cr Papafotiou said. “This initiative will help council achieve goals like sourcing 100 per cent renewable energy by 2021 for all council buildings and street lights.

“Our target of 50 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2023 is also on track thanks to initiatives like this.” The solar system will power the carpark’s lifts, lighting and equipment and will act as a roof over 23 car spaces on the top level of the carpark. A dual-port electrical vehicle charging station has been added to the carpark, which the council says will help cater for the expansion of its electric car fleet. Since 2016, the council has undertaken a

major solar rollout, installing solar panels at 34 council-owned buildings. The panels currently generate almost one megawatt of clean energy, which the council says saves it about $270,000 in electricity costs each year. The council is in the process of establishing a set of strategies to tackle climate change. At a December meeting it endorsed a draft climate emergency plan to be put out for public consultation. Time to catch a wave The surf’s up at Urbnsurf, with the Tullamarine park opening its doors to the public last week. The $28 million surf park near Melbourne Airport opened on January 6 after two months of testing to achieve the perfect waves. The park is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Ubnsurf founder Andrew Ross said the park has been seven years in the making. He said the park strived to make surfing easier and more accessible by providing safe, convenient and reliable breaks that create perfect waves day and night. “Whether it’s learning how to stand up on a board for the first time, or pulling in to challenging barrels without having to travel for hours or be at the mercy of the elements, Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to become a new hub for the Victorian surf community and a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike,” he said. Emergency work takes shape By Tate Papworth Work on Sunshine Hospital’s new $34 million emergency department has begun. The hospital’s emergency department is one of the busiest in the state, treating more than 65,000 patients a year. Once upgrades are completed, the department will be able to treat an extra 59,000 patients a year and have the ability to treat 19,700 children a year. The emergency department will include a

24-hour short stay unit to treat people with mental health or drug or alcohol-related problems in urgent need and a crisis hub. Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos said it was a major win for the west. “This massive expansion will deliver the services that local families deserve, ensuring they can get the best emergency care, when they need it, closer to home. “A trip to the emergency department can be frightening for kids. That’s why we’re creating a dedicated, calming space designed specifically

for children, so parents can have peace of mind during a stressful time.” The new emergency department is expected to open in 2021, creating 100 jobs during the peak of construction. It’s a much-needed boost for the hospital, which was recently ranked as one of the worst in the country for emergency wait times. Just 71 per cent of emergency patients (those requiring treatment within 10 minutes) were treated on time in 2016-17, according to the federal government’s MyHospitals website.

The average for medium metropolitan hospitals with an emergency department was 79 per cent. The gap widens for less urgent care – for Sunshine patients requiring treatment within 30 minutes of arrival, 51 per cent were seen on time, compared to the average of 65 per cent for similar hospitals. Just 51 per cent of those requiring semi-urgent treatment at Sunshine (within 60 minutes) were seen on time, compared to the peer group average of 73 per cent.

Ambassador awaits Prolific volunteer and diversity champion Mohammed Alam has been named as Brimbank’s Australia Day ambassador for 2020. Mr Alam will join the community for the annual citizenship ceremony and community breakfast in Sunshine on Sunday, January 26 where 180 residents are expected to take the oath to become some of Australia’s newest citizens. He said he was excited by the opportunity. “My role as ambassador is to celebrate the day with any council that invites me. So I’ll be attending citizenship ceremonies, flag raisings, telling people my story and a bit about my journey,“ he said. Mr Alam’s is a remarkable journey, having left Bangladesh to start a life in Australia in 2004. Since becoming an Australian citizen in 2008 he’s devoted his life to volunteering and

community work, particularly through St Johns Ambulance. He’s been recognised for his work on multiple occasions having previously been named a finalist for the Young Australian of the Year Award. He was also a finalist for the Local Hero Award in 2018. He hopes Australia’s newest citizens can follow in his footsteps. “I want all Australians to embrace, integrate and respect what Australia has to offer,” he said. “Giving the time we’re going through as a country right now, I’d love it if we could all do everything possible to support the communities and people affected by the bushfires by either donating or volunteering.” The 2020 Brimbank Australia Day event will be held at Kelvin Wheelahan Gardens in Sunshine. Gift that keeps on giving By Tate Papworth One of St Albans’ biggest events is tipped to attract more than 2000 people this weekend. The St Albans Gift will be held on Saturday, January 18 and while the athletics will take centre stage, there’s the promise of something for the whole family. St Albans Sports Club operations manager Lisa-Marie Psaila said a carnival-like atmosphere transcends the day. “The day has become so much more than athletics racing, it’s about the community coming together to enjoy a day out,” Ms Psaila said. “The family activities were initially planned to complement the racing, but over the years it has become an event in its own right.” As for the athletics, the card includes 11 finals races, with multiple heats and semi finals for each. The total prize money on offer will total nearly $12,000. “The racing is thrilling,” Ms Psaila said. “You don’t have to know any of the athletes to get real enjoyment out of it, just pick a name or colour and cheer for them, with the races being handicapped it’s really anyone’s to win.” Children’s activities including a petting zoo, face-painting, balloon twisting, play equipment, giant bubble-making, superhero meet and greets and an interactive disco are also free. Ms Psaila said making the day as affordable as possible was a major focus. “It’s a chance for us to showcase the hard work we put in year-round to make our club the inclusive community club that it is. Everyone from the community is welcome,” she said. The free event begins at 3pm at Kings Park Reserve, St Albans.

Greens call for airport link The Victorian Greens have called on the state and federal governments to recommit to a Broadmeadows connection as part of the airport rail link. The Greens support the proposed Albion corridor from Sunshine, but say the original assessment included a Broadmeadows connection, which is much needed. Member for Brunswick Tim Read said the current plan disadvantages those living in the north. “The reality is, airport workers and travellers living in the northern suburbs are unlikely to travel out to Sunshine to access the airport by train, and will continue to drive instead,“ Dr Read said. “Extending the airport rail link from Sunshine through to Broadmeadows will ensure airport workers and travellers living in the northern suburbs can access the airport by train.” The make-up of the long-awaited airport rail has been the source of much debate in recent months. Many have argued the rail link needs a tunnel between the Melbourne CBD and Sunshine, the option preferred by the federal government. However the state government’s cheaper plan is for an above-ground track, which uses already existing rail lines. A decision is expected in early 2020. Tate Papworth

Council workers fined for dumping By Tate Papworth A Brimbank council employee has been fined $1900 for illegally dumping rubbish in the municpality. Ngametua Punua was convicted and fined in the Sunshine Magistrates Court in October, 2019. The court heard that Punua had dumped large bags of rubbish in a Brimbank park with the intention of later having a Brimbank rubbish truck pick them up, at the expense of ratepayers.

Briefs of evidence against Punua reveal that council litter enforcement officers were patrolling Stadium Drive in Keilor Park in May 2019 when they came across the dumped bags. A search of the rubbish revealed various items of household waste, garden waste and documents with a residential address. Officers attended the address, located in a neighbouring municipality, where they were advised by the occupants that Punua had taken the rubbish to dispose of at work. At the time of his conviction Punua remained an employee of Brimbank council. The council

refused to disclose if he was still employed. In a separate incident, asbestos removalist Steven Sharp was charged without conviction for illegally depositing litter. In July 2019, a council litter enforcement officer uncovered dumped construction and demolition waste outside premises on Baldwin Avenue, Sunshine. The brief of evidence against Sharp reveals among the waste was two cubic metres of cement cladding, partially wrapped in black plastic. Tests conducted on the cladding revealed it to be asbestos.

The court heard that officers attended an address after finding documentation among the rubbish and the property owners advised that Sharp had been employed by them to remove the materials. When questioned, Sharp denied dumping the material, but advised he did work for Brimbank council as a contractor. When asked in what capacity he replied: “You know for when people dump stuff and that we pick it up. Mainly asbestos.” He was fined $2500 and ordered to pay costs of $3445.

Friends go the distance A BreastWest program that supports patients going through a breast cancer diagnosis is having lasting benefits. The Sunshine Hospital program, which supports patients on their journey, is funded through donations and has a large focus on health and fitness. Patients are assigned to a 12-week program at EFM gyms to help support their recovery. Debbi Woods was one of the first people to take part in the program and said it’s been a massive help. “I started in October 2015 just one day a week. By the end of it, four of us wanted to keep going so asked if we could,” she said “We’ve been going ever since and expanded to two days. Along the way we ask each new person who’s come in if they’d like to join us. “We’re up to about eight people now, some have come and gone with things like work commitments coming up.”

Ms Woods said the friendships formed at the program were the most rewarding part. “Being in the group is great … we’ve all got on very well,” she said. “They’re natural friendships. We get together and have coffee afterwards. We go out for dinner at Christmas together. “We’ve become like a little family. We help each other out when we’ve got problems.” Tate Papworth

Sunshine’s green revolution By Tate Papworth A $5.47 million civic green space will be built in the “heart of Hampshire Road”. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou said the space, which will be built between Devonshire Road and Bennett Place, will be a focal point for the community. “Our vision for the heart of Hampshire Road is to create a much-loved area where shoppers can stay a little longer, meet friends and enjoy community events,” Cr Papafotiou said. “The new civic green will aim to provide an inviting public space for larger cultural events and a welcoming and safe space for social gatherings.” The new-look area will include paving footpaths, new road surfacing, extensive tree planting, a lawn area, better seating and lighting, and two new raised pedestrian crossings. The council says Hampshire Road will remain open during construction, however some temporary closures will be required at times. Construction on the project is set to begin in mid-February. Cr Papafotiou said the project was part of Sunshine’s evolution and making the area more inviting. “We want to make this an inviting and green space where our community can come together to relax, socialise and enjoy their shopping,” she said. Work was scheduled to begin sooner, but the Sunshine Business Association, traders and the council agreed deferring the work would be best to avoid impacting on the Sunshine Lantern Festival and the busy December trading period. When announcing the deferments, Cr John Hedditch said continuing to upgrade the

suburb’s main street was of vital importance as it prepares for the major transformation which will come with the super hub. “The ongoing progression and building of this particular street is vitally important

to the presentation of Sunshine to all those investors who are going to come and consider putting their hard-earned into this particular area as we go forward with some of the major infrastructure investments.”

Drilling to find landfill fire Work to investigate “hotspots” at the Kealba landfill will resume today. Drilling is expected to start to find the cause of a suspected underground fire which has been burning at the site for months. Investigations into the cause of the fire were paused over the Christmas period. In November, Barro Group, the operator of the landfill, contacted the EPA to report a suspected fire within one of the waste cells. It followed several residents complaining of a “toxic, smokey chemical” smell in the area. Multiple residents have told Star Weekly that they have suffered adverse health conditions as a result of the smell. The EPA placed air monitoring machinery in two nearby houses for a period of time following the complaints, which rated the area’s air quality as good. In late December, the environmental watchdog issued Barro with an official order to identify and deal with hotspots in the waste and take measures to prevent future outbreaks. The notice requires the company to identify each hotspot, seal the landfill cells to cut off air, then pump in water to cool them. It also requires it to monitor the air for smoke and odour and keep the community informed. The EPA has warned that scheduled drilling could lead to an increase in odour as the cells are opened. MP looks to the future After stepping down from her ministerial roles in 2018, Sydenham MP Natalie Hutchins sat down with Ewen McRae to reflect on a busy past 12 months. We definitely need some improvements in our road system, especially around the Melton Highway and the Calder Highway. Around Calder Park Drive is now a major thoroughfare into those new homes and those precincts. We’re seeing massive growth in Fraser Rise. Only five years ago it had a population of less than 500, and now we’re at about 8500, and so with that population increase we see more cars on the road, and that means we need to be keeping up the investment in our roads and public transport side by side.

End of another year, how are you feeling? I’m feeling positive, but the year has gone by so quickly. I think this month I celebrated nine years as the local member, and I feel like this year has gone the quickest. I think that’s just a sign of how we’re getting on with the job of following through on our commitments. We’ve had some big ones, as well as local ones, that we’ve been working on behind the scenes. Seeing the royal commission into mental health progress, and seeing the first report come out on that has been great to see

Progressing the treaty has been a big thing we’ve been working on over the years, and getting the First peoples assembly elected, which was a goal for this year, and they’ve had their first meeting which is really positive. It’s about setting a new train and a new relationship with aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders here in Victoria, how we can recognise the past and move forward. I think there’s a lot of healing that needs to be done still, and a treaty gives you the steps to do that, but also to give aboriginal people here in Victoria a self determination over their own issues and I guess their own solutions of being able to make their community prosperous going forward. How will having Sunshine designated as a ‘priority precinct’ impact on the Sydenham electorate? How will you leverage the benefits?

You’ve kept the role as parliamentary secretary of treaty. It’s been a big year on that front, how proud are you of the progress? Jobs, Jobs Jobs. That’s the big one. Part of our problem with parking at Watergardens station is that there’s not a lot of opportunities to get employment locally, and so many families are having to travel into the city to work. The reality is if we have jobs 10-15 minutes down the road it will make a world of difference for people and families in this electorate. I would say about one in five people in my electorate who work full-time have employment engaged through the airport or surrounding businesses, and we would love to see a similar ratio with jobs in Sunshine as well in the future. We’ve seen the opening of the Joan Kirner Hospital in the past 12 months, which is not only growing services for the area, but also employment opportunities.

What benefits for the Sydenham electorate would you like to see from the Sunshine superhub and airport rail link? I’d love to see more investment in future years in our bus linkages into our stations. I think once we’ve got the upgrade happening on the Sunbury line, and the future airport rail link, there’ll be so much opportunity for people to leave their cars at home and go to work on public transport, which means we can put more services on that line. What we want to make sure is that people can leave their car at home and get better access.

What do you see as the biggest challenge for the area? Growth is our biggest challenge by far. We’ve got some great plans in the works and construction underway with the upgrade of the Sunshine Hospital, and the planning we’re doing for the Melton Hospital, so I think we’re doing pretty well in those areas. I think now our focus has to be making sure that we’ve got the roads, public transport and schools in place in time. What are you excited about for 2020?

I’m pretty excited to see the rollout eventually of three-year-old kinder. It’s going to take a while here, we’re saying 2022 might be the year it rolls out in our area, but there may be opportunities for that to occur earlier. MY BRIMBANK Since moving to Brimbank, Elizabeth Crisp has been the embodiment of community. She spoke with Tate Papworth.

What do you like best about the area? I love the community spirit. Every morning I take my son for a walk down to the park and the same familiar faces greet us with a smile and a cheery “good morning” I also value the co-ordination of family events and accessibility to services we have in Brimbank. There are a number of well-maintained parks, leisure centres, libraries and outdoor play areas within a small radius which children (and adults) of any age can make use of and enjoy. There are a number of organised playgroups in the area and surrounding suburbs and there are many culturally-diverse, family-friendly events which keeps our social calendar full. What could be improved? Honestly, not a lot. If anything, perhaps making sure any Brimbank-led events are well-advertised in many languages and on various platforms to assist with reaching culturally-diverse families.

Tell us a little about Core, Floor and More and how it came to be. Core, Floor and More encompasses the main areas of rehabilitation I am most passionate about. My vision is to empower my clients to take ownership of their bodies and injuries, to better manage these long-term and ideally, prevent recurrence. As a pelvic health physiotherapist, I assist both men and women with management of pelvic floor dysfunction; whether that be incontinence, pelvic or sexual pain, pelvic floor muscle over-activity or general musculoskeletal complaints. Having gone through a somewhat challenging labour and delivery of my son resulting in an emergency caesarean, my passion was further sparked to help others rehabilitate and strengthen following injury or childbirth. Tell us a little about your involvement in other community group initiatives. I am one of the group administrators for the Albion Anklebiters – a community group for parents and carers of preschool-aged children living in Albion and surrounding suburbs. Together with the Ardeer Parents Group we submitted a grant application for community development and were successful in attaining funding to run community-focused events throughout 2020. This exciting opportunity has already started to strengthen community foundations; we have had a baby and toddler massage event, where I was able to share and demonstrate techniques from my experience in this field, and Storytime Idol, which saw many babies, toddlers and parents enjoying live music and sharing of favourite stories for all to enjoy.

Since moving here and having my 16-month-old son, I’ve met and befriended a number of passionate, supportive local parents, launched my dream business and had the privilege of being on the committee for a successful community grant through the Albion Anklebiters. A savage dog attack on sheep at a university farm in Deer Park has sparked off a full scale purge of dogs found roaming the dark. University officials claim they will shoot any dog on sight following last week’s vicious attack by pet dogs, which mauled about 100 sheep, killing 41 and leaving at least 20 seriously injured.

Several Deer Park residents were evacuated from their homes last week when high temperatures and 40-knot plus winds fanned grass fires to within a few metres of homes in Abercairn Crt, near Robinsons Rd. The fires burnt on a three kilometre front and eventually destroyed 20 hectares of grassland.

Stone finally landed the century he desired in emphatic style in the Crows 124-run shellacking of Werribee Centrals in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 at Dempster Park on Saturday. The VTCA has assembled a who’s who of local and international talent to play in a one-day charity game at Hansen Reserve in West Footscray to raise much-needed funds for those struggling as a result of the devastating bushfires. Dubbed a ‘one-day international’, the teams featuring will be an Australian XI, made up of home grown players in the VTCA, and a World XI, featuring the VTCA’s top imports. Hussain Hanif, coach of the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, will oversee the World XI team as coach. He has applauded the players and the league for chipping in to support those unfortunate to be in the bushfire zones. “It’s a much-needed cause with what’s going on,” Hanif said. “We’re trying to get the whole community behind it. “To have these international players here, it’s a great way to see some good quality cricket, spend your Australia Day enjoying some wonderful activities outside of cricket as well and witness a high class game of cricket in the western suburbs, and backed with a great cause helping those affected by the devastating bushfires.” Hanif can sense the excitement building among the World XI players to be part of a great cause. He said the charity game will allow the imports to socialise with players from outside their own VTCA clubs, while also getting to experience Australia Day celebrations with the wider community. “With the world XI team, it’s guys that have come from overseas, so it gives them the opportunity to understand Australian culture through cricket and at the same time support a much-needed cause as well. “A day like Australia Day, to play cricket with guys in the same competition as themselves, it’s a great way to engage and understand, but it’s also giving back as well. “To give back something outside of your club space is amazing.” Hanif has looked on in awe from afar at a number of players in the World XI team from opposition clubs in the VTCA. United heads to inner west By Lance Jenkinson The inner west is about to get its first taste of Western United in the A-League. United has opted to transfer its blockbuster Australia Day clash with Adelaide United to the VU Whitten Oval in Footscray. It will be the first chance for western suburbs supporters to cheer on Western United in a home game without having to travel to Ballarat or Geelong. United defender Andrew Durante has supported the move, which is aimed at capturing the United fans that find it hard to travel to the country towns and capturing new supporters in the suburbs. â€œI think it could work,â€? Durante said. â€œItâ€™s a nice little stadium, I think it holds 11,000. â€œI think itâ€™s good for the club to be able come to areas like this, a little bit more inner west than Geelong and Ballarat and really broaden our fan base. â€œThereâ€™s quite a lot of fans around this area, so hopefully they turn out in numbers, come out to this game and really support us.â€? One of the qualms about Western United playing home games at Geelongâ€™s GMHBA Stadium is its large size. With relatively small crowds for a big stadium, it has put a bit of a dent on the atmosphere generated by the enthusiastic crowd. A recent United home game at Ballaratâ€™s Mars Stadium, which has a similar capacity to the VU Whitten Oval, generated a much better atmosphere. â€œI think this [Whitten Oval] is a perfect little boutique stadium to generate some noise and atmosphere,â€? Durante said. â€œAt the moment weâ€™re a small club with big ambitions and weâ€™re trying to grow our fan base as quickly

Durante is adamant the short-term pain of playing in Australian rules football stadiums will be worth it in the long run for Western United players and fans once its new stadium is built at their home in Wyndham. â€œI think weâ€™re in a unique situation where once the stadium is built, weâ€™ll have a real strong home base, probably one of the best in stadiums in Australia thatâ€™s owned by us,â€? he said. â€œPlayers want a set home base and fans want a set home base, but itâ€™s quite a unique situation where weâ€™re waiting for this stadium to be built. â€œThe players are happy. We like to go to different stadiums and play in different atmospheres, so weâ€™ll make the most of it. â€œIt will be a home game for us [at Footscray] and I know weâ€™ll get a really good crowd here, so itâ€™s going to be exciting for the players and the fans.â€?
