Santa’s furry helpers Santa is set to make an early visit to Sunshine this year, but he’ll be guided by some different helpers. The reindeer are resting up before their big trip on Christmas Eve, so Santa has enlisted the help of Siberian huskies to bring him to town. The big man in red will be stopping by the Sunshine Marketplace on Saturday, September 14 from noon. Sunshine Marketplace centre manager Nick Kyritsis said he was happy Santa could make the trip, with or without Rudolph and his friends. “Santa tells us the reindeer are resting at the North Pole before their work begins on Christmas Eve,” he said. “We’re lucky enough to have Santa at Sunshine Marketplace and know his huskies will prove to be a hit with our customers this Christmas.” While Santa is usually the star of the show, the pups will be primed for patting and pictures with families who stop by for a visit. Record $1b drug bust By Ewen McRae More than $1 billion of illicit drugs have been seized after a series of raids across the western suburbs uncovered Australia’s largest ever onshore methamphetamine haul. Three people have been charged after Australian Federal Police executed warrants at properties in Darley, Sunshine West, Brooklyn, Elwood and Murrumbeena on December 4. IT worker Stephen Francis Mizzi, 37, from Elwood, and couple Rachel Annette Cachia, 37, and Donovan Mark Rodrigues, 38 – both
customs brokers from Darley – were charged on Thursday in relation to the record haul. The AFP alleges all three were involved in the importation of more than 1.6 tonnes of illicit drugs – equal to almost 16 million drug deals – in stereo speakers originating from Bangkok, Thailand. In total, 1.596 tonnes of methamphetamine and 37 kilograms of heroin (a total of 1633 kgs) were detected with an estimated street value of $1.197 billion and $18.5 million, respectively. Police say it is the largest seizure of heroin in Australia since 2017.
AFP Deputy Commissioner Neil Gaughan praised the work of officers in keeping the drugs from reaching the community, and said the seizure was a warning to those seeking to import illicit drugs into Australia. “Australian law enforcement agencies are committed to combating the hold organised crime has on Australia to keep dangerous drugs off our streets and out of our homes,” he said. “Australia is a lucrative market for drug traffickers only due to the amount of drugs consumed by the public and the price paid for those drugs.
“This is a social problem that is the responsibility of everyone to address. “Police will continue to protect our communities and borders against exploitation by sophisticated criminal networks.” Border Force officers detected the drugs in vacuum-sealed bags after x-ray technology detected anomalies inside the speakers. The three people have each been charged with numerous counts of importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug, which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Concerns grow over landfill fire By Tate Papworth An underground fire continues to burn at the Kealba Landfill, heightening health concerns of local residents. Residents have complained of a “toxic, smokey chemical” smell in the area for weeks, causing some to feel ill and others throat irritation. Several residents have told Star Weekly they’ve been forced to seek medical attention. “Both myself and my five-year-old daughter have a cough,” one resident who wished to
remain anonymous said. “I have coughing fits that go for five minutes… I can’t stop, I’m coughing throughout the day, it’s a really dry cough. “My daughter has a similar cough and complains that her throat feels funny.” The EPA has repeatedly said the fire is under control, despite the fact the “hotspot” has remained for more than a week. The authority this week installed air monitors in some homes neighbouring the site after concerned residents called the fire brigade. The EPA said air monitoring had not shown
any issues with air quality, but it was concerned that odour may affect the local community, particularly when sections of the landfill will need to be uncovered to deal with the hotspot. Landfill operator Barro Group notified the EPA of a suspected fire within one of the waste cells on November 26. The cell has been covered with a thick layer of clay to contain the smoke and odour. Star Weekly understands the air quality monitors are to be removed early this week, but another resident is calling for them to remain in place for a longer period of time.
“I’m still experiencing health issues from the odour, I have a sore throat, tickling lungs, and am often wanting to cough. If you’re outside for any length time you get nauseated,” said the resident. “I just wish we knew what we’re breathing in. Apparently air monitoring hasn’t shown anything elevated above safe, but we’d love to have had this set up a lot sooner.” Brimbank council has urged the community to report suspicious odour to the EPA on 1300 372 842. Brimbank Park gets festive music so it will be great to see the outside of the cafe come to life, weather pending. “David Davros, our music co-ordinator suggested doing something on the 15th, so we’ve organised a visit from Santa, we’ll give out presents and I think we may even have a few schools here singing choir songs.” The cafe opened in December last year and has undergone significant renovations over the past 12 months. Mr Clarke thanked the public for their patience during the time.

Brimbank Park’s Lumbar Cafe is planning to welcome the festive season in style. Two commercial bus services have been grounded following a bus safety blitz at Melbourne Airport. Bus Safety Victoria, police and Commercial Passenger Vehicles Victoria conducted the blitz last week, targeting non-compliant services. Bus Safety Victoria director Lisa Faldon said 37 buses were checked during the surprise operation. One commercial bus service was grounded after it was found to be operated by a person who was not accredited to run a commercial service. The other service was grounded after checks uncovered it was being run using a 16-seat vehicle instead of one with a maximum capacity of 12 seats. Ms Faldon said two drivers were issued with infringement notices for using an unroadworthy vehicle or trailer on a highway, while eight drivers received infringements after errors were found in their work diaries. Defect notices were issued for six buses found to be unroadworthy and for six unroadworthy trailers. The operators of two buses may be issued with infringement notices after it was discovered the buses were not equipped with operating fire extinguishers. “A regulator must hold all operators to the one standard because the bottom line is that safety for passengers, drivers and other road users is paramount,“ Ms Faldon said. “Bus operators should expect to see us anywhere, anytime. “We work to ensure that the many visitors to Victoria who take bus trips have a positive experience underpinned by safe travel.“

A learner driver is expected to be charged after losing control of her car and ploughing into a house in Joan Street, Sunshine West. The car drove through the fence of a neighbouring property before veering into the front area the house, causing extensive damage. An occupant was inside at the time of the incident but was uninjured. The sole occupant the car, a 19 year-old learner driver from Sunshine West, was not injured in the crash.

Creekside College has again proven it has talent when it comes to science. The college entered the annual Science Talent Search competition for a second consecutive year and three pupils received awards. The college’s head of primary science Nichole Fraser said the competition was gaining popularity among students. “Last year we had 12 students enter, which climbed to over 30 this year,” she said. “We did really well. One of our year four students, Dylan, came away with a major bursary for a game he created called Maze Runner. The game looked at the three laws of motion.

“One of our year six students, Nikita, received a minor bursary for a model she created which shows how the ball and socket joint and hinge joint work. “Dylan’s brother Aaron, who is in year six, also received a minor bursary for research he did into the efficiency of ceiling fans.” The talent search competition is open to all primary and secondary students in Victoria and receives thousands of entries each year. Ms Fraser said the awards were a testament to the passion the school’s pupils have for science.
More than 20 firefighters were required to contain a fire that broke out at a home in Deer Park on November 30. Crews were alerted to the incident on Stoke Street just after 8am. Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading and the incident was declared under control after 25 minutes. No one was home at the time.

Property market continues to rise By Tate Papworth Brimbank’s housing market is continuing to rebound in line with the national trend. Figures released by property data and analytics provider CoreLogic earlier this month show housing values have enjoyed five months of consistent growth. According to the figures, housing prices in Melbourne’s west have risen 1.3 per cent in the past month and 3.3 per cent over the past quarter, however they remain 1.3 per cent lower than last year.
Barry Plant director James Hatzimoisis said it’s clear prices are well on their way back to historic highs. “Post election we’ve certainly seen a lift in buyer activity and sentiment. Buyers are back,” he said. “It’s a bit of a roller coaster, volume stock levels are historically low, so there’s increased demand, which is creating lots competition and we’re seeing strong results. “Some data will tell you we’re still below those levels, but out on the field, we’re seeing a different sentiment.”

Mr Hatzimoisis said Sunshine and the Taylors Lakes/Hillside corridor were enjoying the strongest growth. Sweeney Real Estate director Benny Nguyen agreed that the Sunshine market was rising rapidly. “On our end, I can see about a 10 per cent
rise in central Sunshine and Sunshine North in particular,” Mr Nguyen said. “For example we sold two properties side by side in the same street recently. We sold one for $550,000 in May and two weeks ago sold the other for $710,000.” Mr Nguyen said he had little doubt that the market would rise to the record highs of 2016-17 once again. “There’s no doubt in the long run we’ll get back to record highs and probably go beyond that,” he said. “In the long run, Sunshine is the way to go, it’s where to buy. I think it has a lot more potential than already developed areas.”
Lighting up the castle Tickets are now on sale for a Brimbank Christmas tradition. Carols at the Castle returns to Overnewton Castle on Sunday, December 15 with a promise of plenty of festivity, food trucks and fun. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou encouraged everyone to join in, with funds raised going towards a great cause. “This wonderful family event has long been a tradition for local families and a fantastic way to get into the spirit of Christmas,” she said. “Carols at the Castle is also an important fundraiser – with all money from ticket sales going to the Brimbank Community Fund, which supports Brimbank’s most vulnerable residents through grassroots solutions.” This year, Carols at the Castle features a number of talented stars from Brimbank, Melbourne’s west and beyond. Albion’s own stage star, Aurora Kurth, will MC the event, while Melbourne singers
Anthony Monea, Lissa Dawson and Ricky Muscat will have audiences singing along to Christmas favourites. Accomplished musicians Louise Goh, Craig Strain, Lucky Pereira, Cheryl Durongpitsikul and children’s performers Carp Productions round out an evening of Christmas fun – along with plenty of elves, fairies and maybe even a special visit from Mr and Mrs Claus. Watergardens plan takes shape By Tate Papworth Watergardens Town Centre’s evolution is taking shape. The project will deliver 5000 square metres of transformed retail space and include a new playground and a community space. Just under 400 jobs are tipped to be created during the construction stage and more than 400 new jobs are expected to be delivered once the project is complete. The centre’s new $50 million food
marketplace is poised to open mid-2020, but centre manager Joe Galea said a number of exciting milestones are closer. “We remain on track to deliver The Marketplace by mid-2020, and we look forward to reaching a number of key construction milestones in the lead-up to Christmas, including the delivery of its new roof,” Mr Galea said. “This new roof will reuse the existing structure but incorporate new steel work, expanding The Marketplace footprint to 5000
square metres, and allowing for the creation of two brand new entrances to the centre.” Supermarket giant Aldi has taken over control of its future site and is fitting it out. Meanwhile, the centre’s entrance adjacent to The Coffee Club will re-open in mid-December, just in time for last minute Christmas shopping. The Marketplace is the first of a number of planned future upgrades for Watergardens. “A number of other exciting proposed projects [are] planned as part of this evolution
– allowing the team to cement Watergardens as a town centre for the future,” Mr Galea said. “While it is still too early to share specific details, we look forward to making some exciting announcements in the coming months. “We have always held a long-term view about the future of Watergardens, and we are confident that we are equipped with the right plan to deliver our vision that pays tribute to the tradition and vitality of our community.” Details: www.watergardens.com.au

Melton hospital a step closer By Ewen McRae A new 24-hour hospital in Melton is a step closer, with the state government announcing that Western Health will run the facility once it is completed. While the business case for the hospital is still being formulated, the announcement that Western Health will integrate the new hospital into its existing health network – which includes Sunshine and Footscray hospitals – is a positive sign. Acting health minister Martin Foley said
Western Health was best placed to deliver the necessary services for the community. “Melton’s new hospital will be in trusted hands,” Mr Foley said. “Western Health has a proud track record providing the highest quality care to patients throughout Melbourne’s booming western suburbs. “As one of the fastest-growing communities in Australia, Melton locals deserve a world-class, 24-hour public hospital, right on their doorstep.” A tender has gone out to a shortlist of six
consultants, who will carry out the vital planning and design work and find the best site for the new hospital. The announcement has led Djerriwarrh Health Services and Western Health to start discussions over a possible amalgamation of services to better meet the needs of the community. A joint statement from the two organisations said any amalgamation would be voluntary from both organisations, and was still in the very early stages. “The announcement opens the way for a
wider examination of the future of healthcare needs of Melbourne’s west,” the statement said. “Following four years of close partnership between the services, the Western Health board and Djerriwarrh Health Service’s administrator have agreed to explore the best possible options and opportunities for healthcare in Melbourne’s west. “Engagement with staff and local communities of both health services will be an important part of this process and will build on recent community consultation by Djerriwarrh Health Services.”
Cyclist’s sinkhole drama A cyclist was taken to hospital last week after falling victim to a sinkhole in Sunshine North. Emergency services were called to the corner of Gerald and Eastcote streets on the morning of Friday, November 29. The cyclist was treated for minor injuries before being taken to Footscray Hospital in a stable condition. The SES was called to the scene to assist in traffic management and assessment of the sinkhole. It is believed a burst water main caused the damage on the council-owned road. Brimbank council’s director infrastructure and city services, Neil Whiteside, said temporary repairs have been put in place. “Council was concerned to hear a cyclist had been injured during an incident last week. We wish them a speedy recovery,” he said. “Upon being alerted to the incident by Victoria Police, council inspected the road
on the same day and found the collapse had occurred near the main sewer line. “City West Water were called immediately and made temporary repairs to the road.” Investigations are now underway to determine the exact cause of the collapse. Feather in young author’s cap By Tate Papworth A young Brimbank birdwatcher is putting his passion to paper. At just 18, Chanith Wijeratne has already penned eight books dedicated to birdwatching, some focusing on species in Melbourne’s west. It’s a burning passion for Mr Wijeratne, who admits he fell into the hobby under unusual circumstances. “It’s an odd hobby. I got into it after dad gave me a bird field guide for my birthday many years ago,” he said. “I read it, found it very interesting and now I’m obsessed.” He said putting his knowledge onto paper is an outlet to manage his passion. “The first book was on birds of a wildlife park in Sri Lanka, I write them on places I go to and also use them as a way of improving my bird photography skills,” he said. “The beauty is you can do it anywhere. There’s a bird nesting in our backyard at the moment, you don’t have to go anywhere specific. Some of my favourite places are around Melbourne.” Mr Wijeratne said one of his favourite places to explore is Brimbank’s famous Organ Pipes Park, but his favourite sighting came in Sri Lanka. “There’s a very pretty black bird with a blue patch on its shoulder, called the Sri Lanka whistling thrush. “It only lives in the hilly areas of Sri Lanka and is quite a rare, shy species. For six years I’d visit this one spot along a stream … but never saw anything. “But one day I showed up and met a biologist there who told me I was looking in the wrong spot and that there was a bird feeder 100 metres away. I went over to the feeder and there was three of them sitting there.”

Squirrls – pronounced ‘squirrels’ – are the brainchild of Lynda Ford who is this month launching the global phenomenon from her Yarraville home. Made from cotton woven in Spotswood and dyed in Sunshine, the undies come off a production line in Braybrook, are packed inside boxes from Sunshine North before
I asked her to put a little pocket in the front of these undies for me and it worked. “So, over the last 10 years I’ve tried lots of different ways of fastening them – do you put Velcro, do you put a zip, do you put little press studs – but the way that we have them now is the best way to wear them.” While the production of Squirrls is local, Ms Ford said she wanted to help all women. Brimbank council has entered into a short-term contract with Cleanaway for its kerbside recycling collection. The 19-month contract will be used as a stop-gap measure while the council decides on the long-term recyclable processing for the municipality. Mayor Georgina Papafotiou was quick to reassure the community that operations were back on track. “There have been a number of disappointing disruptions to recycling services over the last year but I want to assure the community these disruptions are now well and truly in the past,“ Cr Papafotiou said. “This new contract … gives council and the community the assurance household recycling will continue to be processed correctly.” She said that while the council seeks to sure up it’s long-term recycling options, it would look to the state government for guidance. “Council will continue to look at its longer-term recycling options beyond June 2021, through the collective procurement process with the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group,” she said. “We also eagerly await the Victorian government’s Circular Economy Policy and outcomes of the parliamentary inquiry into recycling and waste management.” Tate Papworth

Award nomination is cream on top By Tate Papworth Sunshine-based Bulla Dairy Foods is a finalist in Australia’s premier dairy awards. The dairy giant has been recognised in the cream category for its Double Cream. The Australian Grand Dairy Awards, which will be held in February next year, are widely regarded as the most prestigious in the industry and aim to celebrate and promote the world-class quality of Australia’s top cheeses, ice creams, milks, butter, and gelato. Australian Grand Dairy Awards convener Alexandra Kury said it was about providing due recognition to an industry synonymous with hard work. “The … awards recognise the hard work, dedication and care our farmers and producers place in developing Australia’s fantastic dairy produce,” he said. Gaming lease relies on goodwill By Tate Papworth Brimbank council and St Albans Sports Club have entered into a lease agreement designed to cut the harm caused by gaming machines. After more than a decade of Brimbank topping the list for the highest amount of money lost on pokies in the state, the council reviewed its agreements with two clubs that operate gaming machines on council land. As part of the new agreement, the St Albans Sports Club will be entitled to significant discounts over the term of its 10-year lease
if it can prove it is implementing harm minimisation practices and show that they are working. The club will receive up to a 40 per cent ($108,000) discount on its lease for implementing gambling harm reduction programs. It will also receive a 25 per cent ($67,500) discount for sports facility capital works investment over the future term of the lease, and a further 15 per cent ($40,500) for the implementation of community benefit activities.

The club operates 35 state government approved gaming machines at the site. According to the Victorian Gaming Commission, a total of $5,167,145.47 was lost by gamblers at the club during the past financial year. A total of $142.9 million, equal to $879 for every adult, was lost at the 15 gaming venues
operating in Brimbank in the same time. Cr John Hedditch commended the new agreement, but said constant evaluation was imperative. “This has been a process where goodwill between the club and council has come to the fore,” he said. “This discount lease arrangement is a really good set of principles, but the devil is in the detail with it and how it actually works is the key to it. “That it works well is the key to it and that it is monitored and evaluated as it’s going forward is a key to it as well.”
Kindness rewarded St Peter’s Primary School is one place where acts of kindness don’t go unnoticed. Three of the school’s pupils, Elizabeth, Marcus and Sophie, have recently been recognised for their compassion, integrity and kindness at the Fred Hollows Humanity Award ceremony, held at Melbourne Town Hall. Elizabeth was nominated by teacher, Ashleigh Mastin, for her kindness and inclusivity. “Elizabeth is an integral member of the class, someone who continually goes out of her way to assist her teachers and peers,” Mr Mastin said. “The bonds she’s created with other students are beautiful and she exudes kindness to every person she encounters.” Fellow recipient Marcus was also nominated by Mr Mastin, for his encouraging and supportive manner. “Marcus is a student who is approached
by fellow classmates for help, support and laughter,” he said. “From picking up a scrap of paper to playing with a friend in need, his kindness and compassion is evident in the relationships he has built with everyone.” Sophie was nominated by teacher Elise Hunt, for her reliability, dedication and enthusiasm. “Sophie always puts in her personal best to every task and she understands the importance of her actions,” Ms Hunt said. “During our fundraiser for the water crisis, Sophie created a mini well to demonstrate the living conditions of those living in poverty and then continued to educate the wider community with announcements and updates.” The Humanity Award is a national initiative of The Fred Hollows Foundation that acknowledges year six pupils who demonstrate humanitarian values towards others. Final approach for spotters By Jessica Micallef Plane spotters will need to find a new place to gaze at landing aircraft as a popular viewing site is set to close for nearby construction. The aircraft viewing area on the corner of Sunbury and Oaklands roads will close at the end of January to make way for a staging area and site office for workers building a nearby 12-megawatt solar farm for Melbourne Airport. The viewing area is a popular destination for locals and tourists to watch planes take off and land. The site is also home to food trucks and coffee vans. Melbourne Airport spokesperson Grant Smith said the “temporary” closure could be up at 18 months. “At this stage we’re anticipating the area will be closed for 12 to 18 months starting at the end of January 2020,” he said. “We don’t have a specific date at this point but the project team will have one for us in the next couple of weeks. “We understand that millions of Victorians all have their own plane spotting story and we appreciate that even the temporary closure of an area like this will be quite emotional for some of our community members.” Mr Smith said alternative viewing spots will be available on Operations Road along the western and southern perimeters of the airfield. However, the decision to close the popular destination has come under fire by staff at Airport Ice Cream and Kebabs. The food truck has called the aircraft viewing area home for nearly two decades and employee Eric said he was disappointed by the decision to close the “known Melbourne icon”. “That’s like telling someone you are going to get sacked,” Eric said. “It’s hard, we have loans to pay, bills to pay.

Schools set to get greener Students at a number of Brimbank schools will soon be encouraged to roll up their sleeves and embrace their inner green thumbs. Braybrook Early Learning Centre, Deer Park North Primary School, Albion Primary School and Springside College have all been named as recipients of Woolworths’ Junior Landcare Grants. The grants of up to $1000 for Australian primary schools and early learning centres are designed to inspire students with hands-on environmental projects such as sustainable food production, improving waste management practices and enhancing native habitats. Woolworths Victoria state manager, Andrew Hall said the Brimbank schools were worthy recipients. “Our Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant program will continue to support students to get hands-on with worthy projects in our local environment,” he said. “The local Brimbank and north-west students have developed deserving projects that will contribute to a greener future for our community and we look forward to tracking their progress and success.” The Braybrook Early Learning Centre aims to develop a bush tucker project, which it hopes will expand on its Aboriginal education program and develop the children’s connection to country in an urban setting. Sunshine will not have an elected council until at least 1981, according to the Premier of Victoria, Mr Hamer. In a surprise announcement, the Premier said last week that the possibilities of fresh elections in Sunshine will not be considered until after the financial position as September 30, 1980 is known and evaluated.
The old Smorgon’s meat works in McDonald Rd, Brooklyn, will re-open early next year, creating jobs for up to 600 workers. The international trading company Louis Dreyfus Australia Pty Ltd, has acquired a controlling interest in the abattoir and cold storage complex. It imports cars from the USSR and exports agricultural machinery there.
It’s seen the growth of the west, struggle and boom times, but now one of Brimbank’s two last remaining historic farmhouses is a testament to neglect and the misery of drugs. Built in the early 20th century, Stevens Farmhouse has been left to ruin, escalating concern in the community for its future.
Brimbank’s house sales are gathering pace again despite the global financial crisis, with one house in Deer Park now valued at $1 million. The 34-year-old four-bedroom, three-bathroom house in Millbank Drive is the first in Brimbank to be valued at a seven-figure sum, Real Estate Institute of Victoria spokesman Robert Larocca said.

MY BRIMBANK Award-winning writer Ennis Cehic is a deep thinker. With a number of projects on the horizon he spoke with Tate Papworth about writing, what drives him, and the west.
What do you like best about the area? I’m particularly fond of its changing perception. The west has always been seen as an immigrant hotpot — and it still is, but nowadays the area has become more fascinating to the outside observer. It’s no longer ignored, but rather, it’s being seen as the place where the idea of community thrives. Where different ethnicities mingle. Food and social ideas get exchanged. I think the west is a symbol, a microcosm of Australia’s multiculturalism. What do you think could be improved? I think the improvements I wanted to see in the west are already underway. The Bowery Theatre in St Albans is a good example because it’s offering opportunities to creative individuals who otherwise might find it hard to find a common ground for collaboration. I certainly did back then. If anything, I’d like to see more investment in the Brimbank Readers and Writers Festival – particularly now as many more writers, thinkers and storytellers are emerging from this region. I also think the general community is interested in hearing
stories from their own homes, streets and places. Tell us a little about the book you have just finished. I’ve actually finished two books. The first one, which I am publishing independently is called New Metonyms. It’s a book I created with Australian photographer, Shantanu Starick and it explores the key landmarks of Bosnia and Herzegovina – my homeland, where I’ve been living for the past year. Bosnia, unfortunately, is still tied to an image of war, even if the war ended nearly 27 years ago. This international image has always bothered me, and this book is an attempt to change this perception by showing – through photography, poetry and stories – the places and landmarks of Bosnia that have never been scarred by war. The book is a limited edition release and will be available to buy online, via our website, www. newmetonyms.com from late December. And book two? The second book is called Sadvertising. This is really my main project and will be my first literary body of work. It’s a short story collection that explores the existential dramas of the global creative industry, consumerism and advertising. I’m very curious about our modern condition, and since I’ve been working in advertising for the past 12 years or so, it has given me a really interesting insight into how consumerism plays out in our lives. The book was written over the past 12 months in Sarajevo under the mentorship and guidance of writer, Nam Le who wrote the award-winning book, The Boat.

What’s your connection to Brimbank? My family and I migrated to Australia in 1997 after spending five years as refugees in Germany. We arrived in St Albans and lived at my uncle’s house till my parents built our family home in the same area. I’ve pretty much grown up in the west; from high school until I finished my degree at Victoria University in Footscray. Much of my teenage years were spent there, and I believe it’s also where I built up my initial curiosity for exploring the human condition, existentialism and storytelling.

Learn how to stamp your style on a rental property and keep your bond When you move into a rental place, it’s normal to want to make it your own by hanging pictures or even painting an accent wall, writes Kathleen Kinney for Domain. But when you’re renting you must remember: Any changes you make may need to be reversed once you move out – and landlords are entirely within their rights to use your money to do it. But all is not lost. Sometimes, modifications can be made with the owner’s approval. In fact, sometimes they’ll help out with costs. Just make sure you’re 100 per cent clear about the stipulations of your lease, and that you have fully informed the landlord before you pick up a paintbrush or hammer. Communication is the key. Painting There’s an excitement with moving into a new home. And, to many, that means breaking out the paint. Experience has shown that it’s not always the colour (although that’s important, too) but the skill that’s the sticking point. “I’ve had tenants get paint on the ceiling, on the trim, on the doorknobs and outlets”, says Richard, a landlord of three properties. “I even had one tenant who painted around the pictures they’d hung on the wall, and around the furniture that was placed up against the wall.” Hanging pictures Filling in holes in the wall is one of the most common issues landlords have to deal with after a tenant moves out. “Everyone likes to put up pictures, and fortunately there are less destructive hanging methods, which is great,” says Richard. “But not everyone sees the benefit of Blu-Tack over thumb tacks.”

SPORT Stability at the top as Thunder re-signs coaches Keilor Thunder is hard at work constructing its squads to be contenders in the Big V senior competitions in 2020. The Thunder got a head start with stability in its coaching ranks with both the men’s and women’s coaches re-signing for next season. Tom Bandilovski, who took the Thunder’s women’s championship team to the grand final last season, has re-signed, along with Liam Glascott, who fell just one game short of taking the men’s championship team to the playoffs. “It was a priority for us to re-sign our coaches at the end of the season,” Thunder operations manager Jason La Rocca said. “Players see that stability and it kind of filters down from there. “It helps them prepare for the season coming in and knowing what to expect from their coaches. “It was no-brainers for us to retain the coaches.” Keilor women’s team came agonisingly close
to taking out the championship title last year. The Thunder lost the best-of-three grand final series in heartbreaking fashion to Werribee on their home court in game three. “It was neck-and-neck the whole series,” La Rocca said. “We viewed ourselves as kind of on-par with Werribee. “I don’t think there was much in it at all and it was just on the day that they were a little bit better than us.” Keilor is hoping the acquisition of new import Claire Lundberg can boost its chance of going one step better. Lundberg, who signed last week, joins the Thunder after showing qualities at both ends of the floor for Montana State University, where she averaged 17 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.1 steals and an assist per game. She has impressive shooting percentages from all areas of the court, making her a threat from mid-range and beyond the arc.
La Rocca is excited to have a player of Lundberg’s quality on board. “Any time you get an import, you’re getting them thinking and hoping they’re going to not only be not only an on-court performer, but a leader amongst the group as well,” he said. “The coaches will definitely pencil her in as a leader on the team.” Keilor has re-signed Ellen Kett and Genna Anderson from last season’s roster. The Thunder have brought in new recruits Ally Keating and Casey Valenti-Paea, while promoting youth players Amelia Velardo and Victoria Ikenasio. After a big finish to last season, Kett’s signature was important for the Thunder. In the men’s program, ambitious youngster Paul Tsapatolis has re-committed to Keilor, along with Brad Kelleher. Sweet taste of Victory By Lance Jenkinson Western United coach Mark Rudan cut the look of a satisfied and relieved man on Sunday evening. United ended its frustrating three-game losing streak with a come-from-behind 3-1 win over Melbourne Victory in an A-League local derby at GMHBA Stadium. With honourable losses piling up in recent weeks, United needed to find a win that would keep them within touching distance of the top teams in the competition. Carrying a two-goal lead into half-time, United did what it has rarely done in the early part of this season, put up the shutters and defended all three points. Rudan made no apologies for the defensive style of play after taking the lead in a pulsating first half. “Today, particularly at half-time, it was about doing what we needed to do [to win],” Rudan said. “We play in a bit of a result oriented world, so it was important that defensively we tightened things up. “The last three games we’ve won every facet in terms of stats, except for the one that’s the
most important and that’s the scoreboard. “Today, the opposite, but we don’t really care. “The first half performance, we did enough to win that game, then in the second half they rolled their sleeves, they were very disciplined and very structured in terms of what our game plan was, so I’m really proud of them.” The opening 45 minutes was action packed for the 10,128 spectators – a record home crowd for Western United. It was the visiting Melbourne Victory who drew first blood, when the speedy Andrew Nabbout pounced to score on the counter in the 14th minute. As has been the trend for most of the season, Western United seem to enjoy the challenge of fighting back from a deficit. United was swift with its response with veteran striker Besart Berisha awkwardly latching on to a perfect Connor Pain cross to head in the equaliser in the 17th minute. Out of respect to the Victory fans, who he will remain a legend amongst, Berisha was relatively muted in his goal celebration. If Victory’s defending of Berisha left a lot to be desired, its lack of attention at the set piece to Panagiotis Kone seven minutes later was

unforgivable. Dead ball specialist Alessandro Diamanti whipped in a nice ball into the box and Kone was afforded too much space and volleyed home uncontested. Just before the break, Western United found a third goal, and this was jaw-dropping good. Speedy winger Josh Risdon delivered a peach of a cross to Berisha, who glanced his header inside the far post. It was a thing of beauty and Berisha could not help but celebrate with gusto on this occasion. If Western United had been criticised during its recent losing streak, it all centred on its lack of cutting edge in the front third. That issue was totally rectified in the win over the Victory. “There was a massive emphasis on our attacking third [at training] and you saw the result today,” Rudan said. “I’m really pleased for them because when you work on things on the training track and it comes to fruition out on the pitch on game day, as coaches there’s nothing better for us.” The fourth-placed Western United will have a short turnaround to Friday night’s trip to Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium.

Lions knock on the door of the four Deer Park is knocking on the door of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 west top four. The Lions have moved level on points with fourth-placed Seddon after a seven-wicket thrashing of Tullamarine in a one-day game away at Leo Dineen Reserve on Saturday. It was a complete performance by Deer Park from the first ball to stumps. The Lions rolled Tulla for just 123 in an impressive bowling performance. Third change Shiran Rajakaruna produced his best display of the season with the ball for the Lions, taking 4-24 off eight overs. Opening bowlers Gayan de Silva and Ricky Suvada captured three wickets apiece. Deer Park cruised to the target three down in the 33rd over. Wicketkeeper Mohammed Alfar, who took four catches behind the stumps earlier in the day, led the charge for the Lions with 42 not out. Rajakaruna also impressed at the crease with 35, while Angelo Emmanuel made 25 not out. Deer Park will host Spotswood at John McLeod Oval in the final two-day game before the Christmas break. In senior division, St Albans played out a dramatic tie with Doutta Stars. Set 199 for victory, the Saints could only muster 9-198 off their 40 overs. Thilina Masmulla (52) and Shanaka Silva (50 and 3-41) were the standouts for the Saints. Sunshine United moved to within three points of the top four with a 48-run victory over Druids. The Tigers posted 149, thanks largely to 74 from opener Thomas Duxson. The Druids were bowled out for just 101. In division 2, Keilor Park fell short by eight runs in its chase for Newport-Digman’s 5-168. Dean Gila top-scored for the Parkers with 50 in their score of 8-160. Surprise ABL call up spurs Sunshine’s Jordan Young

One of the keys behind Sunshine’s blistering start to the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 season has been the form of shortstop Jordan Young. Young has been growing in confidence in the batters box, while maintaining his typically high standard defensively in the in-field, which has seen Eagles coach Stuart Clayton label him as the best shortstop in the league. Young’s impressive start to the season was recognised at higher levels when he was recently called up to play for a short-handed Auckland Tuatara in the Australian Baseball League. The 26-year-old had long aspired to play in the ABL, but never thought the opportunity would come with anyone other than the hometown Melbourne Aces. It was a nice surprise for Young when he was called up for the Tuatara to play against none other than the Aces. “They gave me a call early in the week saying they needed a local player, so I was able to make the time and go down,” Young said. “It’s something I wasn’t expecting, but very exciting at the same time.” Young relished the experience playing with
Auckland. Welcomed to the Tuatara fold by the players and coaches, he felt comfortable from the moment he stepped into the clubhouse. “They were really good people all round,” Young said. “They all welcomed me in and enjoyed having me there. “It was very positive.” Young showed he was not there to merely make up the numbers, producing a number of quality, though luckless at-bats, before getting his first ABL hit. He was not as nervous as he envisaged he might be, which is probably to do with the fact he was coming face to face with Aces players, who he has great knowledge of through his time with Sunshine. “Playing against Melbourne, I know a lot of guys on that team, so it made it a bit easier,” Young said. “I had a little bit of knowledge on the opposition that I could use to help me prepare. “The nerves weren’t as bad as I thought it would be.” While he is hopeful of another ABL call up in the not too distant future, the Eagles’

playing assistant coach is focused on taking his club side to premiership glory. The Eagles remain top of the ladder, despite a narrow 3-2 loss to Sandringham on Sunday. “We’ve got a really good team this year and our record shows that,” Young said. “We’ve got to keep it going. “I think everyone is pretty eager to go as far as we can and try and win the championship this year. “Last year we made it to the finals for the first time in quite a while in division one, so we’re keen and driven to go as far as we can.” Young will continue to play a key role for Sunshine. “I’ve been pretty consistently getting on base throughout the whole season, but in terms of clean, safe, good quality hits, they’ve been starting to come in the last five or six games,” Young said. By Lance Jenkinson Could Saturday be a coming of age for Taylors Lakes in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association? A victory over perennial contenders Werribee could be a realisation that the Lions best is enough to match it with the top sides in the competition. The Lions are halfway there after marginally taking the honours on day one at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday. Lions captain Jarrod Wakeling was pleased to have seen his side bowl a potent Werribee out for 224. A hiccup with the bat late in the day – losing two wickets – put a minor dent on the Lions day, but at 2-20 with 205 more runs needed for victory, they still consider themselves in the box seat to win the match. “A bit disappointing to lose two wickets in the last four overs, but, all in all, we would’ve taken what we got,” Wakeling said. “We lost the toss, they batted on a pitch that played pretty well and to have them out for 220-odd, we were pleasantly happy with that. “They’ve made some pretty big scores this year. “If you could have a side with their talent and their ability and get them out for 224 on a pitch that was playing quite well, you’d be pretty happy.” This is all about Taylors Lakes now. The Lions have shown tremendous improvement in their batting this season to be the second ranked side for runs entering the round. Can they do it with the pressure on against a heavyweight contender? Wakeling is backing his team in. “If we bat the way we have all year, which has been our guys being very patient, keeping their head and playing very straight, I expect us to be able to chase down 224,” Wakeling said. “The weather looks like it’s going to be in our favour, it’s not going to be wet, so if we apply ourselves and bat the way we have all year, we should get 224 on that pitch and on that ground. “If we walk away and don’t make the runs, I’ll be a little bit disappointed because we probably haven’t batted the way we should.” Taylors Lakes was not exactly perfect in the field. The Lions might be made to rue the dropped catch of James Freeman when he was on a duck. Freeman went on to make 71 and was the catalyst behind Werribee’s score of 200-plus. “We did some really good things and, at times, some bad things,” Wakeling said. “We dropped some catchable catches, which

MG takes on SUV big hitters By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring The Chinese-owned MG carmaker has taken another important step in its bid to make an impact on the Australian car market by opening its first flagship metro dealership, Sydney City MG. Located at Mascot and surrounded by many of the automotive big hitters, the venue was used to unveil its new mid-sized HS SUV as the replacement for its ageing and underachieving GS model. MG HS is bigger all round than its predecessor and, more importantly comes with a raft of safety, driver assistance, technology and entertainment features that combine to make it the most refined MG to date. Two variants are offered, both with the same 1.5-litre 124 kW / 250 Nm turbo-petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The entry-level Vibe has a driveaway price of $30,990 while the higher-spec will sell for $33,990, or just $1000 more than the listed prices of $29,990 and $32,990 respectively. The styling highlights come at the front of the car with a large honeycomb grille with chrome finish and the iconic ‘MG’ badge front and centre. The grille then flows into wide, narrow headlamps with daytime running lights above extended lower air vents, also honeycombed. Entry into both front and rear seats doesn’t require much effort and there’s plenty of headroom in both areas. Boot space is an impressive 463 litres with the rear seats in place and expands to 1287 litres with the seatbacks folded.
