Amy Nicholls had never considered entering a pageant, but a spur-of-the-moment decision has taken her all the way to representing Victoria in the national finals of the Miss Galaxy competition. Ms Nicholls will fly to Queensland in March for the finals and admits to feeling some nerves. “I’m a little bit nervous, lots of people have experience and I have none, but it’s been lots of fun so far,” she said. A chance encounter on Facebook proved the catalyst to joining. “I saw the application on Facebook and thought I’d put myself out there and see what happens. “I really didn’t think I’d get this far.” As part of the selection process, Ms Nicholls was interviewed by judges and had to share her journey, which predominantly consisted of charitable work, on social media. Since being advised of her selection she has set her sights on nationals. “At nationals there will be an interview section, a gown section, a swimsuit section and a photography section. “You also get extra points for the amount of charity work you do and money you raise.” Ms Nicholls has selected the Make A Wish Foundation as her charity. “It’s a foundation I really support,” she said. “Now it’s just a matter of working out the best way to raise some money for them.” Tate Papworth
Market plans take shape By Tate Papworth Sunshine’s Marketplace shopping centre is set for a radical overhaul. The centre’s owners, Vicinity Centres, have lodged planning permits with Brimbank council to create a new dining and leisure precinct and an 84-room serviced apartment hotel. The iconic Millennium Man statue will be restored as part of the upgrades and continue to be a prominent feature. Local resident Dinesh Jayasuriya, who has led a campaign to have the Zeus-like creation restored, welcomed the news. “That’s a great idea, he was originally meant to only be around a few years, so hopefully once they fi x him up he’ll be around for half a century or more before he needs work done,” Mr Jayasuriya said.
He hopes Millennium Man will become a focal point of Sunshine when the super hub train station is built. “Ideally they’d move him out of the carpark and on to Hampshire Road so more people will see him,” he said. “It would be great if we could dress him up to reflect the season, for example we could dress him up as Santa in December. “It would be a real reason for people to get off the train and have a walk through Sunshine.”

restaurants and casual dining options. It will also feature landscaped gardens and open space, a children’s play area and a dedicated community entertainment zone. The serviced apartment hotel follows recent upgrades to Vicinity’s flagship centre Chadstone, where a $130 million, 250-room hotel was opened in October. While the marketplace is set for a whole new look, there are plans to incorporate the past.

Doctors assaulted in carpark Assaults on two doctors at Sunshine Hospital in the space of a week has prompted Western Health to issue a public safety warning and increase security. A doctor was attacked while walking to his parked car in the afternoon of November 18. He said he was approached by four men of African appearance, believed to be aged in their late teens to early 20s. They assaulted the doctor and stole his bag, which contained his wallet and other items.
He returned to the hospital for treatment with non life-threatening injuries. It follows a similar incident where a junior doctor was brutally assaulted while leaving work less than a week earlier. In a post to a Sunshine Hospital group the doctor said four men assaulted him and threatened him with a knife. He was forced to take the group to his car, which the men stole. “I am upset and angry what happened to me,” the doctor posted. “But I am more upset how my case has been handled by Western Health
as they have not notified my incident to all the staff members at Western health.” A Western Health spokesperson said officials last week met with senior police officers to discuss the escalating problem. “Western Health CEO Russell Harrison and executive director Suellen Bruce met with senior police officers following the assaults. “Police reinforced they were supportive of the work that Western Health is doing to raise awareness of staff safety outside of the hospital “In the meeting the police also confirmed that there had been an increase of patrols in the
Long walk to fight cancer
areas surrounding Sunshine Hospital, and will come to the hospital to discuss with our staff strategies for improving their safety. “Special arrangements to support evening and night shift staff have been in place for a number of years, including a dedicated security service which patrols Western Health carparks and escorts staff and volunteers to their vehicles at on-site car parking areas on request.” In its 2016-17 annual report, Western Health revealed there had been 240 occupational violence incidents reported within the organisation.

At the age of 29, a cervical cancer diagnosis turned Sara D’Angelo’s life upside down. It’s now been 10 years since Ms D’Angelo came through her “toughest challenge” and she’s on a mission to continue helping those who helped her. The Caroline Springs resident is taking part in this year’s Cancer Council Victoria Walking Stars 21 kilometre half marathon. The non-competitive walking event goes past some of Melbourne’s most prominent landmarks and is one of Cancer Council Victoria’s chief fundraising events. Ms D’Angelo said her stepson provided added motivation to take on the half marathon, which she will do with his mother, Brooke. “My stepson was really interested in my cancer diagnosis and in the raising money side of things. “We’ve been explaining to him how the funds can help certain people get things like new equipment … he actually wants to attend but he’s only eight so we think he’ll struggle with 21km.” There’s also a deeply personal reason for Ms D’Angelo’s involvement. “I want to give back. Cancer Council helped me at my hardest time,” she said. “When I was diagnosed at 29 I was looking to start a family. “I was going to have to have treatment and that was going to have an impact on fertility. “Cancer Council really helped me with information … they gave me booklets, leaflets and anything else I needed.” She said she’s already counting down the days to the walk, which will be held on Saturday, December 7. “It’s a great cause, so I’d encourage everyone to get involved and if you can’t walk, donate.” To donate to Ms D’Angelo’s cause visit: www. fundraising.cancervic.org.au/fundraisers/ SarahDAngelo/walking-stars Tate Papworth
Brimbank residents won’t need to line up to vote in next year’s council election after the council opted to again use the postal voting method. A council report stated that the postal voting method offered greater voter convenience, costs less than an attendance election and has a higher rate of formal votes counted. Another consideration is that the Brimbank community is familiar with the postal voting method, given the 2016 election was conducted this way. There is the potential for community confusion should the method of voting be changed. For the 2016 elections, the eligible voter rate (voter turnout plus informal voting) was 53.05 per cent for attendance elections, and 67.73 per cent for postal elections. Cr Virginia Tachos said it was a good move. “I think it’s a positive outcome. There’s evidence to show there was a higher level of voter turnout, there was a lower level of informal votes and there was a higher level of eligible votes counted,” she said. “This alone paints a very strong and positive response as to why postal voting is a better voting option. It also gives time for the voters to assess the candidates they’re voting for, who they stand for.” Cr Tachos said that given Brimbank’s diverse community, provisions would need to be put in place to ensure information is provided in multiple languages to ensure it’s all understood. The council elections will be held on October 24, 2020. Tate Papworth 12432901-LB47-19 12433434-SG48-19

Get fes ve with Carols at the Castle Festivities, food trucks and fun are on the Christmas list for Brimbank’s 2019 Carols at the Castle on Sunday 15 December.
This year Carols at the Castle features an array of talented stars from Brimbank, Melbourne’s west and beyond, directed by Musical Director Lachie Robertson.
Tickets are now on sale for the popular Christmas celebration held each year at Overnewton Castle in Keilor.
Albion’s own stage star, Aurora Kurth, will MC the event – using her sublime vocals and cheeky comic style to keep audiences entertained in between numbers.
This wonderful family event has long been a tradition for local families and a fantastic way to get into the spirit of Christmas.
Melbourne singers Anthony Monea, Lissa Dawson and Ricky Muscat will have audiences singing along to Christmas favourites.
It is also an important fundraiser – with all money from ticket sales going to the Brimbank Community Fund, which supports Brimbank’s most vulnerable residents through grassroots solutions.
Accomplished musicians Louise Goh, Craig Strain, Lucky Pereira, Cheryl Durongpitsikul and children’s performers Carp Productions round out an evening of Christmas fun – along with plenty of elves, fairies and (rumour has it) Mr and Mrs Claus.

Toxic smell sparks health fears By Tate Papworth The state’s environmental watchdog is calling on the community to help it find the source of a toxic smell. Residents in Kealba have complained about a “toxic, smokey chemical” smell coming from the area around the Kealba Landfill site in recent weeks. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said the smell had raised health concerns. “Over the past few weekends, every Saturday and Sunday there’s been this smokey chemical
smell persistent throughout the whole day,” the resident said. “Then on Monday and Tuesday we noticed a really strong chemical smell, which got worse as the evening went on. “They both irritate the throat and make you want to cough. “We’ve lived near the landfill for over 10 years and it’s been pretty good, there’s never been anything like this. “Other neighbours have mentioned it too, even people in St Albans. “I even noticed on a communiy Facebook page … a few people thought others had put
something strong on their garden or there was a small burn off.“ Environment Protection Authority manager for the western region, Stephen Lansdell, confirmed an investigation was active and asked for community assistance. “EPA is investigating a number of recent reports of odour in the Kealba area, and is looking to members of the public to help track down the source,” Mr Lansdell said. “EPA officers were investigating a cluster of reports from residents in mid to late October, possibly from an industrial source, but found it difficult to confirm the origin of the odour.
“There were six more reports from the public between 18 and 21 November, with callers describing the odour as a burnt smell, a chemical smell, and a smell like manure, which suggests the odours may be coming from several points of origin. “The investigation is continuing, and members of the public can make a difference by reporting odour as soon as they notice it, by calling 1300 372 842.” He said quick reports help to have EPA officers in the area before the odour can disperse, which gives them a chance to track it back to the source.
Village of the young Parents of preschool-aged children in Ardeer and Albion won’t be short of things to do over the next 12 months. A group of parents from the Albion Anklebiters and the Albion Parents Group have joined forces to create the Anklebiters Village, which seeks to build community connections and ease social isolation for parents. The Anklebiters have received a $6500 grant from the Brimbank council and have put it to good use, with 15 preschool-friendly events to be held over the next 12 months. The schedule of events kicks off with a professional demonstration of baby and toddler massage by local business owner Elizabeth Crisp of Core, Floor and More at the Kororoit Creek Neighbourhood House on Saturday, November 30. The second event will be a storytime which will be held at the family-friendly Sunshine
Social on December 15. More events – ranging from a celebration of local languages and pajama parties will be announced soon. All events will be held within walking distance of Albion and Ardeer. Albion Anklebiters president Dinesh Jayasuriya encouraged all to attend. “These events are organised by local parents to provide connection and a sense of community for local preschoolers as well as their parents and carers. Together, we can create the village we need to raise our kids.” Details: www.facebook.com/AlbionArdeer Other community groups are encouraged to get involved with the program of events by emailing albionanklebiters@googlegroups. com Tate Papworth

Building social connections By Tate Papworth

Isolation is known to be a risk factor when it comes to suicide and that’s why neighbourhood houses across communities are striving to help build social connections. Melton council’s community learning and activation officer Daniela Kohut has a leading role at the Hillside Neighbourhood House and says they’re a real hub for networking. “So much comes from them. Often people come to join a program – something like yoga and from that they get to know other people in the class, build friendships and support each other,” she said. “It also gives them the confidence to do other things – we offer all sorts of activities here, singing, art, a walking group and more. “We see a lot of people building friendships and it’s great to watch them grow. They pick each other up, and there’s real sense of community.” Neighbourhood houses offer a range of activities for all ages, but Ms Kohut says not everyone has to join a class. “It’s also about providing a point of contact. People who feel isolated can come to the house. “We find people that come build relationships with the staff. That can lead to a conversation about how they’re feeling. “Being with other people also reduces social isolation and improves mood.” Education and information around mental health issues is also readily available. “A big part of our role is to raise awareness around issues … people might not be coming in to take part in activity, we’re an information hub as well. “It’s a really important aspect of the work – we want people to feel confident that this is a safe place to start a conversation, to feel

’Tis the season to sing It’s time to warm up your singing voice ahead of the Sunshine Presbyterian Church’s carols by candlelight event. The church will hold its annual carols service on Saturday, December 14. Church member Esther Cho said the event has become a popular fixture on the Sunshine Christmas calendar, with the church hosting carols for the past 15 years. She said the service will be a family event, with a community barbecue before the carols. “We try to engage our neighbours to participate in the event and celebrate
Christmas,” Ms Cho said. “It’s an open event for people of all faiths.” The carols service will feature performances by congregation members, as well as the Sudanese church. “It’s a night of music and a message of hope,” Ms Cho said. “The service is a place for people to be with the community.” The carols by candlelight will be held at 120 Anderson Road, Sunshine, from 7.30pm. The community barbecue begins at 6pm.

Residents ready for runway fight By Tate Papworth Keilor residents are vowing to continue their fight against Melbourne airport’s planned third runway. Earlier this month, Melbourne Airport revealed a north-south facing runway was its preferred alignment for expansion. The decision will mean more aircraft flying over suburbs, with Keilor being one of the hardest hit. Melbourne Airport Community Action Group member Hannah Robertson said
residents have wasted no time continuing their fight. “Some of the group were out on the weekend and handed out pamphlets to people on the street,” Ms Robertson said. “It’s surprising how many people are still largely unaware of the actual impact this is going to have on the area.” While the airport may have changed its mind on the runway direction, Ms Robertson said the group’s goal remains the same. “The hope is still to put a hold on expansion at the airport.
“There’s plenty of air transport capacity in Melbourne through Avalon, which would have less impact on communities.” The group is also calling for independent studies to be carried out on the impacts of increased aircraft noise. “There needs to be an investigation into the real impact of noise on health, education and property value,” Ms Robertson said. “The public needs to be supplied with independent, unbiased information on these impacts. Ideally we’d like to see an inquiry into the future of air transport in Victoria to ensure
it’s serving the best interests of state, not just the airport and certain parts of Melbourne.” The airport expects its third runway to open in 2025. When announcing the decision, Melbourne Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said the airport would seek to address community concerns. “There’s a number of different ways you can operate … to reduce the impact on your communities and that’s what we need to work through now – how best to run this airport and this new runway system which will create the best affect overall.”
Golden roles for actors When Charlie Bucket unwraps his chocolate bar and reveals a golden ticket, it’s the start of a magical journey that feels too good to be true. For Brimbank actors Joseph Naim and Glen Oliver, taking the stage at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre as part of the musical production of the Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is equally as magical. The show arrived in Melbourne in August following a successful run in Sydney. Both Naim and Oliver are part of the ensemble, however Naim only joined the show when it came to Melbourne. He admits joining the production as a re-cast had its challenges, but it’s been an experience he wouldn’t trade. “It’s been great, the cast and company have been brilliant,“ he said. “The biggest challenge I faced was coming into a show when it’s already been running a while as a re-cast member.
“I’ve done four professional shows and out of the four I’ve done three as re-cast, which is a skill-set in itself because you’re learning in isolation and having to catch up to the rest of the cast, who’ve already learned the material inside and out.” For those who haven’t seen the production, Naim promises an “Aussie twist”. “In the films, the kids and families all come from different parts of the world, but in the show the Bucket family are Australian,” he said. “I’m in the ensemble, but I also play a character called Mrs Green. She’s not on the films, but she’s like a fairy godmother to Charlie. “She’s an interesting character, she’s been played differently all over the world, but my interpretation is very a very Melbourne one.” Details: www.charliethemusical.com.au Tate Papworth

Council focus on indoor sports By Tate Papworth Land at Sunshine College’s Ardeer South campus could be earmarked for a new six to 12 court indoor sports stadium. Brimbank council will ask the state government for a strategic land use assessment of the Glengala Road site to determine its suitability for a stadium. It’s part of a council push to bolster the number of indoor sports facilities in the municipality. The council draft study which looked at existing and future needs for indoor sports

- John Hedditch has identified a need for more facilities to meet growing demand. The study also suggest partnering with local schools to maximise available land. Cr John Hedditch said partnership was a key part of the process. “Th is has been a very good process in identifying preferred sites going forward,”
he said. “It also looks, very importantly, at partnering with schools and others. “At night we drive past schools and we see vacant basketball courts and empty ovals … we’ve got to get better at using what we’ve got. “We’ve got very little land left in Brimbank now, it’s all been sold by various parts of government and other organisations and it will become an urgent need not too far in the future.” Basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball, table tennis and futsal are among the most popular indoor sports in Brimbank.
There are currently 39 indoor sports courts across the municipality, which includes seven council-owned and managed courts, 28 in schools, and four privately owned. The study not only found a future need for additional indoor courts across Brimbank, largely in the southern half of the municipality, but confi rmed that many Brimbank residents are forced to travel outside the municipality to access indoor courts. The draft study is now out for public consultation at www.brimbank.vic.gov.au/ haveyoursay
Triathlete’s already won Six years ago, David Deakin made the decision to overhaul his lifestyle to become a better role model for his kids. The Keilor Downs father decided to start running, after topping the scales at more than 140 kilograms. He joined a triathlon club and a year later he started competing in Ironman competitions. Since then, Mr Deakin has lost about half his body weight. In August, Mr Deakin went to the Philippines to compete, where he secured qualification for the 2020 World Ironman Championships in Taupo, New Zealand. He will represent Australia in Ironman 70.3, which comprises a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21km run. “This is the first time I have placed high enough to target the championships,” Mr Deakin said.
“To represent my country … that means a lot.” Mr Deakin said he loved the lifestyle that comes with competing in triathlons. “I like the imprint it leaves on the kids [and] the friendship group you build around you is second to none,” he said. Laura Michell

Green light for Parsons upgrade By Tate Papworth JR Parsons Reserve will finally receive a much-needed upgrade. In February, Star Weekly revealed that the clubrooms used by the Grand United Cricket Club had fallen into a state of disrepair. There were holes in the roof, a single male toilet, no dedicated female changeroom and asbestos throughout the building. A week after the story was published, Brimbank council put out a call for public input into a rejuvenation plan.
A vision was put forward to demolish the clubroom and a neighbouring pavilion which houses the Albion Football Club. However, the football club claimed it was being short-changed, because its pavilion was built with members’ money. The club also has access to the pavilion for 12 months of the year, under the council’s plan, that would have been reduced to six months. At a recent council meeting, a compromise was reached. The Albion Football Club will be allowed to stay in its existing rooms on the provision that

it is responsible for the upkeep. When the rooms are no longer usable, the club will move into the new pavilion, which will be shared with the Grand United Cricket Club. In a statement posted on Facebook, the club said it was happy with the decision.
“We are happy to advise that following council’s meeting tonight, the Albion Football Club will continue to have full use of our rooms as they stand. “We will continue to work closely with council around discussions regarding the maintenance and upkeep of our rooms.” The Grand United Cricket Club was equally happy. Club secretary Jack Hale said new facilities mean the world to the club. “We’re really happy with the outcome, having these upgraded rooms will have great benefit over the coming years with our members.”
Mini library for all Deer Park’s Adamovic family hopes the act of sharing books will help bring the community closer together. The family has started a mini library outside their Poole Street home, providing a space for people to pick up and drop off books. Mirela Adamovic said the family moved to Deer Park from Preston last December and wanted to do something to help them feel part of their new neighbourhood. “We saw a lot of mini libraries in Preston … there was a lot of sharing of produce from the garden and sharing of books,” she said. “I like to read books a lot and I am in the public library all the time, so I wanted to do something to share what I have and create a sense of community.” Ms Adamovic’s husband, Mike, built the library as part of his rehabilitation from a workplace accident which resulted in his right leg being amputated.
Over 50s Resort Living
The Adamovic’s placed the library in their front garden about one month ago. Ms Adamovic has noticed an increasing number of people stopping to collect books. “Our house is near a school so we see a lot of families stopping. My son put books inside [the library] for kids. People have also dropped off books as well,” she said. “I hope some more mini libraries will pop up in the neighbourhood. That would be something which would make me happy.” Laura Michell

The big Smorgons company in Sunshine has been under attack in State Parliament during the past few weeks for allegedly failing to honor a $1 million gift made to the government in 1976.
Sunshine and District Community Hospital in King Edward Av, will soon close after 50 years service to the western suburbs, because of a lack of money. Originally the hospital was to have been merged with the Western General Hospital’s Sunshine campus, but the idea was shelved because of a reported cost of $18 million.
The once-failed methane gas-powered electricity station, Energy Park in Sunshine, has a new lease of life. Brimbank council and contracting and construction company Beak Industries have signed an agreement which has reactivated the operation of the Hulett Street plant.
Housing organisation HomeGround is hoping the State Government will step in to fund its proposal for 158 units for homeless people in Sunshine.

MY BRIMBANK Michael Torpey is the director of Caroline Chisholm Catholic College’s senior campus. In his role he is responsible for more than 750 students. He spoke with Tate Papworth.
What do you like best about the area? Brimbank does a great job of looking after young people. There are so many parks and open spaces, and a significant investment in planting trees and expanding the canopy. Even though the area is so close to the city, there’s very much a ‘small town’ community feel. People in Brimbank have a great sense of community and are proud of this part of Melbourne. What could be done better? While there has been a strong investment in parks and open spaces, it would be great to see these utilised more with community events … open air cinema, food trucks etc. Opportunities for people to bring their kids and enjoy outdoor events together would be great. It would also be wonderful to see Brimbank become a leader in sustainable living, with all cafes, restaurants etc making a united push to promote recyclable products Tell us a little about your role and how long you’ve been doing it?
For three years I’ve been the director of the senior (10-12) campus at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. In this role I work with about 750 students in their final years of schooling, helping them establish strong learning habits and preparing them for life beyond secondary education. Our school is a diverse one and a great microcosm of metropolitan Melbourne, and I love hearing the stories our students bring with them and seeing the continual drive to make the most of their opportunities. What do you like best about the position? Every day offers new challenges and opportunities, and in this job no two days are the same. That is both exciting and energising, and I am continually impressed by the vision, insight and creativity our students display. Working with young people from year 10 to year 12 provides an opportunity to see them grow into confident young adults ready to play their part in shaping our local community and the world beyond. I am very lucky that my colleagues at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College are incredibly hard-working, committed and supportive of our students. When we try a new approach or initiative it is always supported by teachers and support staff who are willing to go the extra mile. What’s the biggest challenge? You never know what the day will bring, and things can change very quickly. The important thing is to be prepared to deal with matters as they arise and to see change, and challenges, as an opportunity to learn and grow.
(Luke Hemer) 201236_01
What is your connection to Brimbank? I’m really proud to live and work in the west. Before I met my wife and moved here I didn’t know a lot about this part of Melbourne, but having lived here for over 15 years now I continue to be amazed by the diversity and character of the area. It’s great to live in an area that’s undergoing such positive growth and that offers so many opportunities for its residents

An inviting brick facade sets the stage for the rest of this sparkling property. A pendant light dangles over the bright and airy entry hall, backdropped by white walls and matching floor tiles that extend through most of the dwelling. One exception is the lounge room, where polished timber floorboards and a gas fireplace set into a grey feature wall, take centre stage. There is a large study nearby and a light-filled dining room integrated into an open plan living area incorporating a spacious kitchen and family room. Cabinets finished in blonde timber and charcoal tones, and a mirrored splashback, form the canvas of the stylish kitchen, while stone benchtops, stainless-steel appliances and a sleek breakfast bar are further enhancements. The family area is generous and has views and access to an outdoor entertainment zone with café blinds. These also frame the landscaped backyard. The large, light-filled main bedroom has timber floorboards, a walk-in robe and striking en suite. Three additional bedrooms have built-in robes and share a central bathroom which has a luxurious tub. Ducted heating, alarm system and a double garage with secure access add to the comforts.

SPORT Pitcher perfect as Sunshine Eagles record a strong win

Sunshine flashed its pitching department riches in a commanding 4-1 win over Blackburn Orioles in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 clash at Barclay Reserve on Saturday. The arm depth of the top-of-the-ladder Eagles was on show with their four stars only needing to be wheeled out for three innings or less. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton described the significance of beating an Orioles team that has bullied most others in recent years. “It was a really good day for the club because they’ve been a tough side for five or six years,” he said. “It’s always good to get a win over them. “We pitched really well today, we played some good defence and there was some really good hitting into the wind.” Griffin Weir got the start for Sunshine and
threw two confident innings. Riley Barr, who conceded the only run for the Eagles, produced three innings in relief, leaving the game with a 3-1 lead after five innings. Adam Irons was on the mound for two innings before Jeremy Young closed out the game with the last two innings – neither giving up a run. A nigh on watertight performance defensively contributed to a big win for Sunshine. “You can go to any of those pitchers and have no issues knowing they’re going to put out some quality ball,” Clayton said. “We also played some really good defence.” Jordan Young, who was outstanding at shortstop, had two hits for Sunshine.
“I believe he’s the best shortstop in the league,” Clayton said. “He just gobbles up balls and makes the plays. Irons, who pitched middle-relief, also had two hits.” The game MVP honours went to Bryce Aldridge, who scored the Eagles’ first two runs. Aldridge also had a hand in another of the Eagles runs when he got involved in a rundown, allowing a runner at third base to reach home. Clayton was full of praise for the American import. “Even his off days when we’re not training, he’s down here and he hits in the tunnels and takes extra cuts,” he said. Sunshine will complete its two-game series with Blackburn on Saturday at Billabong Park. Lance Jenkinson
Waiting game for Jets By Lance Jenkinson It could be an agonising wait for Western Jets prospects at this week’s AFL national and rookie drafts. Unlike previous years, when a number of Jets players were considered as locks for first round selections, there is a chance that no Jets will be taken on night one of the two-night draft when the cream of this year’s crop are picked. Last year, Zak Butters was taken at selection 12, with Xavier O’Halloran going 10 picks later, while in 2017, the Jets had the shortest wait of all with Cam Rayner snapped up with pick one, but this edition there is no clear-cut standout players. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan said it makes for a more uncertain draft period for the young guns of the west. “There’s a few boys who’s next journey in football really depends on what happens on Wednesday and Thursday night,” he said. “It’s an exciting and nerve-racking time knowing the outcome will dictate what their next path in their football journey is.” Western Jets have best prepared the players to make the transition to the AFL. The players have put their best foot forward in the NAB League. While there is little more that either party can do to improve an individual’s draft prospects in the days leading into the draft, the Jets will still have a role to play in the wellbeing of the players, some of whom will live out their boyhood dreams, while others will venture on a different path to the AFL. “The AFL clubs have waded away for so long – list managers, football managers and recruiting managers – and have an idea of players they are after and they’ll try and rank all of the players,” Dervan said. “For us, it’s just putting our support behind the boys who are in contention, looking after their wellbeing and ensuring they’ve got a good network around them on the night. “We’re hopeful that we’ll see at least three get drafted, but the reality in football and life is that not everyone’s dreams get realised, so we’ll make sure we’re liaising with the players and make sure they’re well looked after this week.” Three players have emerged as the Western Jets’ top prospects heading into the draft. Darcy Cassar, Josh Honey and Emerson Jeka have been touted as potential second or third round selections. “I believe they should all get drafted,” Dervan said. “They’ve got characteristics that AFL clubs can develop.” Cassar has shown tremendous versatility in his football in his time with the Western Jets. The Keilor product excelled as a driving force from defence, was a classy ball user in the midfield and has shown sound forward craft. “He’s creative, innovative, really smart, got

good goal sense and game sense,” Dervan said. “He would thrive in an AFL system.” Honey, also from Keilor, has worked both as an inside midfielder and damaging mid-sized forward. He is strong for his size and will not get easily pushed off the ball at the next level. “He’s really solidly built for his height, really strong above the hips,” Dervan said. Jeka was the best physical specimen at the Jets this season. A tall, imposing 198-centimetre key position player, he could be the steal of the draft late on if
he can get it all together at AFL level. “An AFL club would kick themselves not to take a chance on a player that can kick the ball well on both feet and is a key position versatile player who can play at the defensive and forward ends,” Dervan said. The best of the rest for the Western Jets seem to be midfielder Daly Andrews, Morrish medallist and captain Lucas Rocci and NAB League leading goalkicker Archi Manton. The draft will take place on Wednesday and Thursday night this week with television coverage on Fox Footy.
Kealba-Green Gully has breathed life into its stop-start North West Metropolitan Cricket Association Luscombe Shield season. The Cougars recorded a massive win over Burnside Springs in a two-day game at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday to boost their spirits. While the Cougars suffered a setback in a competitive one-day game against Pascoe Vale Central the following day, the signs are looking more promising. “Early on we had a few guys unavailable for different reasons,” Cougars captain Evan Long said. “There’s been weddings, Spring Carnival, injuries, things you can’t control. “We’ve dropped a couple of games and lost a bit of momentum. “It was good to get the season rolling with a good win.” After posting a gigantic 9-351 declared on the back of 127 from Shaun Guerra and 98 from Long, Kealba-Green Gully was heavily favoured to secure maximum points. In the end, the Cougars took care of business with a 146-run victory. Riley Thompson snaffled his first five-wicket haul en route to 6-53 off 16.5. On Sunday, Kealba-Green Gully lost a nail-biter to arch-rival Pascoe Vale Central. The Cougars posted 5-233, but Central chased it down with one ball to spare for a two-wicket win in a classic. Deer Park teen strikes at the right time

Nestled on the bottom line of Deer Park’s bowling figures in Saturday’s crucial 20-run win over Tullamarine in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 west clash are those of Lachlan Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald took 1-20 off five overs, which does not stand out straight away, until the full context is revealed. Not only is Fitzgerald just 13 years of age, the wicket that he took of Buddhika Mendis broke an 89-run sixth wicket partnership and set Deer Park on its way to victory. The Lions took full control of the game when Ricky Suvada dismissed Tulla’s top scorer David Zahorodni an over later. “They were 5-48 and then their captain Zahrodni and Mendis put on a decent partnership,” Lions president Steve Krstevski said. “The kid broke that partnership.
“The captain [Suvada] gives him a red hot go. “He had faith in the kid. It was pleasing to see him break that key partnership.” Tullamarine was bowled out for 192 in its search for Deer Park’s 212. The Lions’ victory was set up on day one by Suvada, who scored 58 off 83 balls. “He’s back into full flight again,” Krstevski said. “He’s made two scores over 50 in the last two games, so he’s back in touch.” Not to be overshadowed was Deer Park No. 3 Mark Brown. Brown was the rock of the Lions’ innings with a patient 37 off 180 balls. “It was just an incredible knock,” Krstevski said. “He just digs in week after week.” Angelo Emmanuel had an impressive all-round game for Deer Park with 24 and three wickets. James Bonnici posted a valuable 29 in
the lower order. It was a big win for Deer Park as it not only moved them into the top four, but gained them some confidence with a win over a likely finals contender. Deer Park will play two one-day games on the road this weekend, against Seddon on Saturday, and Airport West-St Christophers on Sunday. In senior division, Keilor collected its first win of the season, beating Strathmore by 66 runs. The Blues had a massive 8-352 to defend and restricted the Mores to 8-286 with captain Kaushal Lokuarachchi starring with 4-67. St Albans and Sunshine United suffered heavy losses, leaving them both outside the top four. Lance Jenkinson

United’s VAR anger
Deer Park had to work for its points in the Bowls Victoria premier division on Saturday. The Parkers overcame a stern challenge from bottom-of-the-ladder Yarraville-Footscray to win 73-67 away at Francis Street on Saturday. Deer Park is riding high in third spot on the ladder with five wins from seven games ahead of a home clash with Melbourne on Saturday.
Cricket By Lance Jenkinson Western United is frustrated, but not panicked, after falling to consecutive A-League losses for the first time. United coach Mark Rudan pointed to his side’s dominance in general play in one-goal defeats to Newcastle Jets and Central Coast Mariners over the past two rounds as a source for optimism. “Those two narrow losses, if you look at both games in isolation, I think the first 30 minutes against Newcastle, we weren’t at our best, we rectified that and absolutely annihilated them in the second half and did everything but score,” he said. “Exactly the same in this one [against Central Coast], apart from a deflection [on the Mariners goal], they hadn’t had a shot [on target] I don’t think. “Everybody saw the kind of team that we are, sometimes they go for you, sometimes it doesn’t go for you, but I’m extremely proud of the players, their effort, the way they kept fighting to get themselves back into the game. “The attitude is first class, the character of the team is brilliant.” Western United’s finishing was the issue in its 1-0 loss to Central Coast Mariners in Gosford on Sunday evening. United had the ball camped in their
attacking third for most of the game, but could not unlock the Mariners defence. The most clear-cut chance of the game fell to Panagiotis Kone in the first half, but he put a perfectly weighted ball from Alessandro Diamanti over the crossbar from close range. The chances continued to come for United with Besart Berisha tipping a shot over the crossbar and then powering a header straight into the arms of Central Coast goalkeeper Mark Birighitti. Diamanti had a number of half-chances that he might have buried on another day. While United would have liked their time over again with a number of their missed chances, Rudan paid credit to the discipline of the Mariners, who were desperate to win their first game at home this season. “They fought hard, they battled hard and they kept their zero,” he said. “I need to give them due respect as well because they fought extremely hard to get that win.” Rudan was ropable about two VAR decisions that went against Western United late in the second half. The first contentious decision came when United substitute Dylan Pierias whipped in a cross which hit the trailing arm of Mariners defender Ziggy Gordon. Gordon’s arm appeared to be struck in an unnatural position, but the video assistant
46 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 26 November, 2019
ruled play on. The next vociferous call for VAR intervention from the Western United coaches came when United winger Connor Pain fired a shot on target, which hit the out-stretched arm of Mariners goalscorer Giancarlo Gallifuoco. Rudan voiced his displeasure at both calls that went against his side and called on the A-League to explain how they came to the decisions. “I’m not going to swear like my colleague [Western Sydney coach Markus Babbel] on Friday night did, but I’m right behind him and I’m right behind all the other coaches that have been on the wrong side [of VAR],” Rudan said. “I’d love a please explain. “If you want to look at us as a football club, not one VAR decision has gone our way this year.” Diamanti was the pick of the Western United players, serving up some delicious passes in the first half. Dario Jertec worked hard both ways, kick-starting United’s attack from defensive midfield and ensuring little got through him. Josh Risdon was full of energy on the right side, while Kwabena Appiah-Kubi was lively on the front line. Fifth-placed Western United will confront its toughest test yet when reigning champions Sydney FC visit GHMBA Stadium in Geelong on Sunday at 4pm.
Taylors Lakes is a team on the rise in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Lions, last year’s wooden spooners, have already matched their wins tally of last summer with two victories and a draw from their opening five rounds. A heart-stopping one-wicket win over Melton in a one-day game at MacPherson Park on Saturday was the Lions’ second consecutive win.
Soccer Marijan Cvitkovic will continue his playing career with Caroline Springs George Cross in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. An attacking midfielder, Cvitkovic departed Melbourne Knights to much fanfare, having been both a captain and caretaker coach of the club last season. Cvitkovic was a title winner with St Albans Saints and Dockerty Cup champion with the Knights.
