Runway delivers angst By Tate Papworth Keilor residents claim Melbourne Airport’s decision to build a second north-south facing runway will “kill” the area. The Airport’s decision, announced last Thursday, means that the number of flights over suburbs including Keilor, St Albans and Bulla could increase substantially. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers spokesperson Susan Jennison said: “It’s a death knell … it’s devastating”. She said residents were concerned about the health and social impacts of another north-south runway and increased air traffic.
“The big thing with this is that a lot of people are still not sure how it is going to affect them,” she said. Residents will consider their next move over the coming weeks. Airport chief executive Lyell Strambi said the additional runway is expected to open in 2025. “After a period of extensive analysis and consultation with industry partners, we’ve decided that building our third runway in the north-south direction is the preferred option over an east-west direction,” he said. “The main deciding factor is the availability of the runways in a north-south direction. They are just far more available for operations
on more days of the year, particularly in those peak hours where capacity is really important to the airport.” More than 300,000 residents living in impacted areas will receive information packs in the mail, starting from next week. “There’s no denying that a growing airport has an impact on the community,” Mr Strambi said. “Some of those impacts are positive, some of those are negative and we have to work with the community to understand those and then find ways to deal with them. “There’s a number of different ways you can operate a particular runway system to reduce
the impact on your communities and that’s what we need to work through now – how best to run this airport and this new runway system which will create the best affect overall.” The airport hopes to begin construction on the new runway from 2022. It is estimated it will $1.5 billion, significantly more than the originally planned $1.3 billion price tag for the east-west runway. Mr Strambi said the main determining factor in the airport’s decision to scrap more than five years of planning on an east-west runway was availability, largely determined by the wind. The plans still need to be approved by the federal government.

Licence testing could return By Tate Papworth A three-year fight to have licence tests in Brimbank may soon be over. VicRoads has confirmed it is “exploring options” to deliver more local driving tests and specialist services to customers around the area. Licence testing and vehicle checks were removed from the Sunshine VicRoads list of services in February 2018. Resident Peter Thomson has tirelessly campaigned for the services to return to

Brimbank and said the signs are promising. “I have heard that VicRoads is looking at some sort of licence testing facility, possibly in the Derrimut area,” he said. “For me it should have happened when they moved into the new office in Sunshine – a lot of people have been put out – but it’s better late
than never.” A Department of Transport spokesperson refuted suggestions that the lack of licence testing facility in Sunshine had increased wait times at neighbouring VicRoads offices. The department said the former Sunshine customer service centre provided 52 drive test appointments per day when it closed in February 2018. Eighteen of those are now being provided by the Melton customer service centre, 16 at Broadmeadows and nine each at Werribee and Sunbury.
“We have not reduced the number of drive test appointments across the western suburbs since opening the hub@Sunshine. All of the daily drive test appointments previously delivered by the former Sunshine customer service centre are now being provided by neighbouring customer services centres,” the spokesperson said. Mr Thomson didn’t agree. “If wait times haven’t increased and this hub in Sunshine is as wonderful as they say, I’m not sure why there would be a need to explore options to begin with.”

Robot building reaps big rewards on the cubes,” she said. “The team began work on the first of two robots they created in August which was very good at placing balls in and on the cubes. “The team then built a second robot that was better at stacking and moving cubes which would enable them to score higher.” Ms Mobbs credited the school’s specialised robotics lab with helping achieve the success. “A permanent robotics lab was made available at the start of the year and, in addition to purchasing robotics kits, we were able to purchase a playing field and VEX robotics game
so that we could practice in similar conditions to the competitions we attend.” However she saved her strongest praise for the students. “The team’s ability to work together and negotiate has been outstanding. All team members have contributed to the design and all feel ownership over the robot. They have been ready to try each other’s design ideas and support each other in developing driving skills,” she said.

Brimbank’s pop-up drive through recycling initiative is returning. Residents will be able to take their unwanted items to the pop-up site at Victoria University’s St Albans campus from 8am-1pm on Saturday, November 30. At the council’s first pop-up, which was held in March, hundreds of people took advantage of the chance to declutter their home and dispose of unwanted items. Brimbank mayor Georgina Papafotiou encouraged residents to make the most of the opportunity. “It’s easy and no charge for residents to participate in the pop-up event. You don’t even need to get out of the car. On the day, simply load up the car or trailer and arrive at the location, we’ll take care of the rest,” she said. “We are partnering with local charity organisations, including the West Welcome Wagon and Bikes 4 Life, to donate and reuse unwanted household items, including mattresses, white goods, electronic items and bicycles.” Televisions, computers electronic appliances, white goods, furniture (in good condition), mattresses, bicycles (in good condition), homewares, clothes and linen will all be accepted. Asbestos, construction waste, chemicals, biological waste, sharps, broken monitors, fluorescent tubes and smoke detectors will not be accepted. No trucks or commercial quantities will be allowed. There will also be an eight item limit per household and proof of residency must be supplied. To register visit: www.brimbankpopup. eventbrite.com.au

Firies on the front line
Mental health for men
By Ewen McRae Local firefighters have answered the call to help fight devastating bushfires gripping New South Wales. Crews from Caroline Springs, Bacchus Marsh and Ballan spent most of last week fighting alongside their NSW counterparts as the early season fires claimed hundreds of houses and tore through thousands of hectares of bushland. Speaking from the scene, Caroline Springs firefighter Tom Ferguson said when the call for help came through the group quickly mobilised and hit the road. “We got the call through about 4pm on the Sunday, and we were in the trucks and rolling by 6pm,” he said. “It wasn’t too bad when we first got up here. We drove straight to Singleton Military base, and it was OK but obviously very hot, dry and windy. “We stayed there for the Tuesday for the catastrophic conditions that were forecast for that day … it was a pretty calm morning which turned into a pretty hectic afternoon. “Once the winds kicked up in the arvo we started to get stuff lighting up all over the place. “Our strike team were quickly in action fighting to save some houses which we were able to do, and then regrouped over at Greta [near Newcastle] working on a scrub fire.” On November 13 there were still more than 50 trucks, in strike teams of five trucks, battling blazes in the area the Caroline Springs CFA was deployed. The team moved up to Coffs Harbour later in the week to continue the firefighting effort. Mr Ferguson said it was always good for firefighters from across Australia to band

together to battle fires. “The CFA is very organised in the sense of how we build our teams and the way that we attack these fires, so this is very similar to how we’ve done things in the past,” he said.

The conversation around mental health is growing and a new program set to be launched in Brimbank is seeking to expand the conversation. On the Low Down focuses on the social and cultural factors that influence wellbeing, particularly for men. The program’s leader, David Pearce, said an upcoming free workshop will cover a number of areas. “We’ll take a look at the main factors behind mental health issues and what we can learn from the statistics,” Mr Pearce said. “Particularly for men because when it comes to behavioural outcomes, statistically men are much worse off,” he said. Mr Pearce said identifying issues was only part of the workshop. “It’s all well and good for us to come in and tell people how to work out if something is wrong. “But how’s that help them afterwards? “There’s a number of services and local resources out there that could be better used, so we’ll explain what services are out there, their function and how to access them so attendees can support themselves.” The free event will be held at Uniting – Sunshine Mission, 32 Withers Street, Sunshine from 11am-1.30pm on Wednesday, November 27. A little bit of kindness can go a long way – just ask Deer Park North Primary School pupils. The school last week spread a little joy to others as part of World Kindness Day. School community hub co-ordinator Carolyn Black said the school was covered in posters highlighting kindness and each class received a coveted golden bucket. “Each class has a little golden bucket full of pieces of paper with a random kindness act written on them,” she said. “Each student selects a gesture of kindness from the bucket and then the idea is for the student to act upon the suggestion throughout the day.” Suggestions included making thank you

cards for staff and holding the door open for others. Ms Black said it was fantastic to see the children embrace the idea. “It’s actually been really lovely to see,” she said. “Even just walking around the school grounds I’ve heard the kids talking about it being kindness day and to do nice things.” She said the lessons won’t be limited to one day. “Of course we should all be doing nice things every day, that goes without saying, but it’s nice to really emphasise it for a day. Let’s face it, we could all do with a little bit of kindness.”
A man died after his car struck a fence and rolled in Sunshine West last Monday night. Police said the car was travelling along Somerville Road and it appears the driver lost control of the vehicle at a roundabout about 11.20pm. The vehicle struck the curb, went through a cyclone fence and rolled onto its roof, trapping the driver inside. The driver, the only occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.
Suspicious blaze Strong winds fuelled what is believed to be a suspicious blaze at a home in Albion last Tuesday. Despite the windy conditions, 30 firefighters were able to bring the fire under control just half an hour after they were alerted. About half of the building has been damaged by fire. Police are investigating the blaze.

Surf’s up at Tullamarine By Laura Michell Surfers are just two months away from being able to catch a wave in Tullamarine. Urbnsurf will open its $28 million surf park near Melbourne Airport in January. The park is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere. Members of Australia’s Olympic surfing team and junior surfing champions were among the first people to catch a wave at the new facility, testing out the surf last week. They were joined by representatives from Melbourne Airport, Surfing Victoria, Surfing Australia and Three Blue Ducks.

- Linc Horton Urbnsurf founder Andrew Ross said the park has been seven years in the making. “Whether it’s learning how to stand up on a board for the first time, or pulling in to challenging barrels without having to travel for hours or be at the mercy of the elements, Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to become a new hub for the Victorian surf community and a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike,” he said. Melbourne Airport’s chief of property, Linc Horton said the park would be a great addition to the airport. “We’re working to create an elite sports precinct right here at Melbourne Airport known as Elite Park, which will service travellers, the community and wider Victoria. Urbnsurf Melbourne is set to play a big foundational role as part of the precinct,” he said.

A lot has changed in local sporting clubs over the years. New equipment and facilities, electronic scoreboards, and mobile phone apps are just some of the modern reinventions. But perhaps one of the biggest and most important changes sweeping through local clubs in recent years has been the attitudes to mental health and suicide prevention. Where once it could have been seen as a point of weakness to be vulnerable in front of your teammates and admit you were struggling, more and more local clubs are learning about the importance of mental health and encouraging members to speak openly about their struggles. Sydenham/Hillside Cricket Club is embracing this change. President Warren Hackney has reached out to the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) and the club will host a mental health awareness talk in coming weeks. Mr Hackney said it was important for local clubs to help members off the field as well as on it. “I thought it would be a great topic to cover and to talk about with a group of 30 to 40, mostly men, knowing that men typically are the types not to discuss mental health issues,” he said. “I thought it was an important discussion to introduce to our group, and I think it’s timely in the current climate with the way mental health issues seem to be affecting so many people. “I think communities like ours, and we are a community, find it important to embrace social causes as much as we do the day-to-day operation of the club. “It’s important to educate our members on

mental health issues among members. “We’ve come a long way, but there’s still a long way to go,” Mr Hackney said. “I’ve been involved in sporting clubs for probably 35 years, and people are far more willing now to discuss and share personal experiences than they once were. “Back in the day, there was no discussion about your personal issues, that was seen as a sign of weakness and something that would be met with a fair bit of ridicule or bullying. “You think about it now, and it really was just bullying. Even if it’s done in a jocular way you would cop a lot of grief if you opened up the way we do now. “I think we’re getting better, and sessions like the one we’re about to do will be helpful in educating people further.” The NWMPHN is offering a short free online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. Mr Hackney recently completed the course, and said it was an important tool in combating mental health difficulties. “It was quite a helpful course,” he said. “It didn’t take too long, only an hour, and I learnt quite a few things from it. There were some things that I was probably already, to some extent, across, but it was good to get some pointers for how to treat certain situations. “Definitely a worthwhile thing for anyone to go through.” To access the training, visit:lifespan.qprtraining.com/setup.php Use the code PBT.

The decision follows an extensive planning review, which found a north-south runway orientation could provide greater capacity and availability for the airport. Melbourne Airport will now spend the next 1218 months undertaking extensive modelling, assessment and development of approval documentation, with the intent of releasing the Preliminary Draft Major Development Plan (MDP) for public comment in early 2021. Following that exhibition period the Commonwealth Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development will assess the MDP and all the public submissions received before making a decision on the application. Melbourne Airport hopes to receive approval for the third runway in early 2022, with construction to commence shortly after, with the runway to open late 2025. Cairnlea’s e-crime crypto link By Tate Papworth A Cairnlea man has been charged as part of an E-Crime squad investigation into unregistered cryptocurrency transactions. A 38-year-old man was arrested at his house last Tuesday after detectives executed warrants just after 7am. Police said a substantial quantity of cash and false identification documents were seized from
the house. A cryptocurrency ATM was also seized from a shopping centre in Braybrook as part of the investigation. In June, Australia’s financial intelligence watchdog AUSTRAC provided information in relation to reports of scam activity linked to the ATM. Police subsequently examined a number of transactions on the machine. AUSTRAC and Victoria Police worked
collaboratively on the investigation, which they say is one of the first by the E-Crime Squad relating to cryptocurrency transactions. AUSTRAC acting national manager intelligence operations David Hawkins said the outcome demonstrated the importance of close collaboration between AUSTRAC and law enforcement partners in stopping financial crime. The man was charged last week with
having provided a registrable digital currency exchange (DCE) service when not registered; and continuing to provide a registrable DCE service following an AUSTRAC issued cease and desist notice from November, 2018. He has also been charged with dealing with property reasonably suspected of being proceeds of crime. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
Beers, babes at Bowery For one night only, St Albans’ Bowery Theatre will play host to Beers and Babes. Based on a true story, the popular production follows three friends holidaying in the remote Daintree Rainforest. Surrounded by dangerous animals and odd tourists, the girls experience a very strange night. The show’s producer Marianne McLoughlin said there’s plenty of laughs and strange situations. “The show is based around writer and director Serah Nathan and a trip she took a few years ago with some girlfriends,” she said. “It follows events around the bonfire, but we’ll leave it up to the audience to decide what’s real and what’s true.” The theme of refusing to grow up is one that features prominently. “It’s three girls, two nearing their 30s, wanting to go on a girls trip to end their 20s,” Ms McLoughlin said. “They want to get away from Melbourne life and embrace rain forest, but each has their own
agenda.” She said there’s something for everyone to enjoy in the production. “It’s a play that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It pokes fun and is targeted towards people that don’t often come to the theatre. “There’s a message that the theatre isn’t just for elite, it’s for anyone to come and take away what they will.” Serah, who grew up in Taylors Lakes, said she’s proud to be bringing an accessible, unpretentious play home to an audience she knows and loves. Flagship park hit by vandals By Tate Papworth Vandals have attacked one of Brimbank’s most popular parks. A number of mature trees at The Lakes Reserve in Taylors Lakes have been cut off at the trunk. The senseless act comes in the middle of a Brimbank council-funded $3.34 million upgrade to the park. In a statement last week, the council said the incident had been reported to police. “We are extremely disappointed that reckless vandals have continued to deliberately damage some beautiful mature trees at The Lakes
Reserve in Taylors Lakes,” the statement said. “This is particularly frustrating as council continues to work on completing a $3.34 million transformation of the reserve. “Unfortunately vandalism is a problem across Melbourne and does occur in our parks from time to time. “It’s always so disappointing for everyone in the community who enjoys our beautiful parks when something like this happens.” The council will work to remove the damaged trees and clean up the area as soon as possible. It expects the park to reopen in late 2019 following the completing of upgrades. Work on the park’s transformation began in
May and incude a new activity and leisure area with exercise equipment, an obstacle course, a new irrigated picnic lawn, shelter, barbecue and improved views of the lake. The shared user path on the south side of the lake from Kings Road via Parmelia Drive to Sunshine Avenue will also be improved. The council tipped in $2.13 million for the project as part of its 2018-19 capital works budget and allocated an additional $960,000 in 2019-20. The state government contributed $250,000 funding to the project. Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Lending a hand Bottle caps are so often discarded and sent to landfill, but a new program is giving them a second life. A partnership between CaLM (a campus of Melton Secondary College for students who struggle with mainstream education) and Envision Plastics is helping turn bottecaps into plastic hands for amputees. The students have been collecting the caps for 10 weeks and recently finished their first hand. CaLM teacher Trevor Faure said it had been a fantastic experience. “We’ve been provided with a 3D printer, and we’ve collected the bottecaps to work towards making these hands,” he said. “Envision came in and explained how there’s different ways of re-using these caps instead of sending them off to recycling plants, and creating something that is worthwhile for
someone in need is a fantastic thing to be a part of.” It takes about 1000 caps to complete a full hand, with the plastic then broken down and 3D printed into the finished product. Mr Faure said the response from the students had been incredibly positive, and he hoped it would become a long-lasting partnership with Envision. “It’s been amazing,” he said. “They’ve been very engaged … knowing that there’s a purpose for this activity and they are helping other people has really helped keep them focused. “We have the printer now, and Envision will stay involved with helping us out, so we can continue … making these hands for them.” Ewen McRae

Mayor’s Message
Cr Lara Carli One of the key roles Council plays in planning and managing our community is to advocate to both the State and Federal Governments for infrastructure, resources and services that will help shape our City’s future. Over the next 20 years, the City of Melton will become Melbourne’s fastest growing muncipality, and Council has identified 10 priorities that reflect the needs of a city on the move. The priorities, which include roads and freight, health, education, public transport, and recreation, have been included in our Advocacy Priority booklet, which will be officially launched in the coming weeks.
The countdown to summer school holidays is on. There’s so much to do in the City of Melton – join us for games, craft, construction, movies, sporting events and more! NGV KIDS ON TOUR Hands-on activities at Caroline Springs Library, inspired by actual art exhibitions. Ages 5-12.
As one of Melbourne’s fastest growing municipalities, all three levels of government have an enviable opportunity to capitalise on our growth and take steps to plan and shape a community for tomorrow.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) conference, where delegates from across Australia came together to discuss the opportunities that exist in growth areas—like the City of Melton—and the importance of creating welcoming places at the heart of every community. The timely delivery of critical infrastructure and services will remain at the core of Council’s planning and advocacy priorities, but strategic place-making is also an important part of our ongoing work. As our City continues to evolve, so too will our community’s needs and expectations. With strategic vision, attention to detail, creativity, and long and short-term planning, Council strives to achieve the best outcomes for residents, particularly in our key advocacy priority areas.
In other pleasing news, Council was awarded a commendation in the NGAA Partnerships and Building Connections Award, for our work on the City Vista Sports Precinct Partnership. Well done to everyone involved in the development of this project. And finally, last week I also attended Council’s Djerriwarrh Festival. I was impressed by the wonderful line-up of activities and performances on offer, in particular the market stalls, food vans, kids’ activities and cultural entertainment. I was especially thrilled to see Sneaky Sound System, the iconic bonfire and, of course, spectacular fireworks display. I hope everyone who went enjoyed the event and celebrated all the great things about living and working in Melton. I welcome comments and feedback from residents. Cruel blow for family By Tate Papworth Friends of popular boxer Dwight ‘Cowboy’ Ritchie are rallying to help his family in their time of need. Ritchie collapsed and died after receiving a body punch during a competitive sparring session earlier this month. Ritchie spent a lot of time at the Keilor-based Team Ellis Boxing gym. His close friend Jake Ellis said the tight-knit community is pulling together. “I’ve known him since we were kids, he’s one of my closest mates, when I heard it just ripped my heart out,” Mr Ellis said. “He’s got three kids, all under the age of 10, so we want to make sure they and the family are looked after. “We’ve started a GoFundMe page and we’re hoping to raise a significant amount. “At the moment we’re at $30,000, but we’re hoping to get that to $50,000 because the IBF (International Boxing Federation) have said they’ll double what we raise.” Mr Ellis described his close mate as one of the most “humble” people he’d known. “He never spoke out of turn and he was incredibly humble. “His last fight was only recently against Tim Tszyu. He got a massive cut over his eye during that fight and had to carry on for over 30 minutes half blind. “When he was asked later if that played a part, he said ‘no, the better man won’ and that’s what he was like as a person, incredibly humble.” He said Ritchie was always there for him. “Even as kids … if we ever got in trouble he’d protect me.” To donate visit: www.gofundme.com/f/restin-peace-dwight-ritchie

Passengers will have an extra morning peak service to Southern Cross and an extra afternoon peak service from Southern Cross. The morning service will depart Melton at 7.04am, dropping off passengers at Sunshine and Footscray, and arriving at Southern Cross at 7.47am. A new evening service from Southern Cross station to Melton will depart at 5.23pm picking up passengers at Footscray and Sunshine and arriving at Melton at 6.04pm. Local MP Steve McGhie said the addition of Cobblebank station and the new services were vital for Melton’s future. “We’re giving Melton passengers more transport options with new train and bus services to help get them where they need to go and home again,” Mr McGhie said. “We promised to deliver Cobblebank station and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” A new bus route will also give people more options to get to local schools and train stations. The new Route 454 Cobblebank station – Melton station will connect locals between the new estate and the growing areas of Melton South to trains to Melbourne and Ballarat. Ewen McRae

Parents and ratepayers associated with Ardeer High School are protesting against Sunshine Council’s decision not to allocate money towards a new school community theatre in the 1979-80 financial year. A petition with 161 signatures was lodged with Sunshine Commissioner, Mr. Alex Gillon last week by principal Mr Peter Rich.
The Environment Protection Authority and the Ministry of Planning and Environment are desperately trying to hide their guilt over the pollution of the Ardeer housing estate, according to Shadow Minister for Planning and Environment, Mark Birrell.
A leading local historian has urged Brimbank residents to check with the council whether their homes have been earmarked for heritage protection after a historically significant Sunshine home was partly demolished. Mrs Olwen Ford, a co-author of the council-commissioned draft cultural heritage study, said the partially dismantled home at 5 Watt Street was listed as historically significant as it was part of the McKay estate.
Housing organisation HomeGround is hoping the State Government will step in to fund its proposal for 158 units for homeless people in Sunshine.

Transplant brings joy By Ewen McRae Daniel Manic has had issues with his liver since he was a baby, but a transplant last year has given him a new lease on life. At just six-months-old, Daniel was diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease, a rare condition, similar to diabetes, that meant his body struggled to store sugars. With an often swollen liver, he said he always had a big belly, had to constantly monitor his diet, and as a kid he couldn’t take part in many of the sports his friends were playing. “I couldn’t play physical contact sport, because a little tap basically winded me,” Daniel said. “It was pretty shit to be honest. I had to be so careful. “I had a pretty strict diet. The worst thing was drinking cornflour mixed with water, which is probably the worst thing you could ever drink, but I needed it to keep my sugars up. “I went a bit off the rails as a teenager, just staying home all the time and didn’t want to do anything with my life, but I got it together.” In his early 20s, Daniel’s doctor told him he would likely be dead within eight years if he didn’t have a liver transplant, but it was nearly two years later before he put himself on the waiting list for the operation. “My mum was in the room and she burst into tears, but for me it didn’t really register,” he said. “It wasn’t until about 2017 that things changed and I put myself on the list.” Daniel had a transplant mid-way through 2018. At the same time, he was expecting the birth of his first child.
Hunter, arrived three months after his transplant. Just over a year since his transplant, and with Hunter about to turn one, Daniel is looking forward to many more years ahead. “I’ve had no complications,” he said. “I don’t have to drink cornflour any more, which is the best thing, and I’ve got a flat stomach for the first time in my life.
‘‘
I’m grateful for what they’ve given me. I’ll never forget it - Daniel Manic
’’
“It’s been pretty life-changing. To have Hunter sitting here with me, it’s been a big year.” While organ donation in Australia is anonymous, Daniel wrote a letter to the family of his liver donor to thank them for giving him a second chance. “I struggled to put into words how I felt,” he said. “I said thank you, and told them how it had helped me. I’m obviously sorry for their loss, but I’m grateful for what they’ve given me. I’ll never forget it.” The National Thank You Day, to honour all organ and tissue donors and their families, was Sunday, November 17. Details: www.donatelife.gov.au Daniel Manic with his son Hunter. Inside, timber hardwood floors under sumptuous carpets, high ceilings and picture rails make it equally inviting. To the right of the entrance hall, a lounge room is overhung by a smart pendant light. This area is connected with a cosy dining room and the kitchen where timber-topped benches and white cabinets with plentiful storage are accented by new, stainless-steel appliances, including a gas cooktop. The breakfast bar overlooks the backyard with its pergola and entertainment area, workshop and chicken coop and plenty of room for children to play. Three bedrooms on the ground floor have built-in robes and access to a family bathroom finished in timber and brass accents. At the top of a carpeted staircase, a generous retreat with timber wainscoting lining the walls is the perfect place for the family to gather. The large main bedroom sits close by and has built-in robes and a breezy en suite. Ceiling fans, a security system and double carport are further inclusions in this lovely dwelling.

Cr Georgina Papafotiou Mayor
Welcome to this edition of Brimbank NOW! This handy quarterly lift-out is designed to give you information on key projects and capital works around Brimbank. I’m very pleased to have been elected Mayor earlier this month, and I look forward to leading our elected Council in the final year of our four-year term. Our municipality is on the move, with several big opportunities ahead of us. As Mayor I look forward to progressing our ‘Transforming Brimbank Agenda’, which is Council’s plan to make sure Brimbank realises its potential as the capital of Melbourne’s booming West. Council is seeking to leverage record infrastructure investment in and around our city, to improve job, education, and health, environment and fairness outcomes for Brimbank. It will be an absolute privilege for me to lead Council to achieve the best outcomes for our Brimbank community. We’re also continuing to work hard to enhance our City by improving our roads, and community and sporting facilities. You’ll find more information about capital works in this lift-out. The festive season is just around the corner, and we’ve got a lot of fun activities planned for the lead up to Christmas. In addition to our annual Carols at the Castle, Council has organised kids craft and roving street performers around the municipality to get us in the festive spirit. We’ve also brought back our Giving Tree Program - it is an opportunity for you to donate non-perishable food to help local people who may be struggling at this time of year.
From Wednesday 27 November to Wednesday 11 December you can donate a gift of nonperishable goods to help local people who might be struggling at this time of the year. For drop off location details visit brimbank.vic.gov.au/givingtree or call 9249 4000.

Get ready to dive into an Australian first!
View from Taylors Road
Brimbank Council has released early designs for the Australian-first health and wellbeing hub set to replace the St Albans Leisure Centre in Keilor Downs. The schematic designs – part of the early design phase – will be used to provide the basis for further investigation and detail development of the project. The health and wellbeing hub will be an outstanding, beautiful and modern facility – an oasis for the people of Brimbank. The view from Taylors Road will be phenomenal and will transform the area. From the outside, the building’s appearance and shape has taken inspiration from the iconic and strong form of the Organ Pipes rock formation which can be found in Brimbank. There will also be a café and wet and dry change rooms - including all-important family change rooms. The public forecourt will be a green, shaded and welcoming place to meet.
View from Packard Street
What will the new aquatic and leisure centre offer? • Two massive water slides that will be visible from the outside of the building • A 50m, ten lane competition pool with all abilities access • A leisure and learn to swim pool • A warm water program pool with adjoining spas • An amazing splash pad, play unit for the kids • Dry and steam saunas • A state-of-the-art gym with 24-hour access • Group fitness/program rooms • A wellness centre with a community program room.
artist impression of pool hall
An Australian-first The aquatic and leisure facilities, alongside a range of preventative health, education and social services to be delivered by co-located tenants under the same roof is what will set this hub apart from others – making the hub an Australian-first. St Albans Leisure Centre will close in April 2020, and shortly after that construction on the new centre will start. Updates will be provided as the project progresses. Keep up to date at brimbank.vic.gov.au/thehub

Capital Works Hampshire Road upgrade to benefit cyclists and pedestrians Council continues to transform the heart of Sunshine with improvements to the northern section of Hampshire Road now complete – and featuring Brimbank’s first separated bike lanes.
What’s new? The upgrades include new traffic signals at the intersection of Hampshire and Foundry roads, new footpaths, street lighting, soft landscaping and the installation of raised pedestrian crossings. This will improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists in the fast-growing centre of Sunshine. On-road separated bike lanes have also been added – a first for Brimbank. These will provide a safer connection for cyclists travelling to the Sunshine train station, and improve safety and traffic flow around the Sunshine Town Centre.
The $1.66 million project was jointly funded by Brimbank Council ($1.147 million) and the Transport Accident Commission and VicRoads ($513,000), through the State Government's Safe Systems Road Infrastructure Program. The works are part of Council’s Hampshire Road Master Plan 2014 which outlines a vision for the redevelopment of Sunshine’s main street into a unique and vibrant destination.
Recent improvements
Works underway
• Alexandra Avenue Children’s Centre, Sunshine – Two new kindergarten rooms and a new playground were added with space to accommodate 66 children, at a cost of $1.49 million including $500,000 from the Victorian Department of Education.
• Errington Reserve, St Albans – Council is constructing a $4.3 million sports and community pavilion and new tennis courts valued at $1.9 million that will replace the existing pavilion. The old structures have been demolished and foundation works for the pavilion and in ground services and for the tennis court are complete.
• A new 500m section of concrete trail has been constructed along Taylors Creek between Rowell Place to the back of Hart Place, Taylors Lakes to connect to the existing Taylors Creek Shared Path.
More improvements coming Further improvements on Hampshire Road will start next year, to upgrade the M.B. Lynch Memorial Gardens, and also create a beautiful civic green space between Bennett Place and Devonshire Road. To view the Hampshire Road Master Plan visit brimbank.vic.gov.au/hampshirerd
• Sportsground Lighting Projects Lighting is being upgraded at six sports grounds to competition standard 100 LUX with LED. The sites are Ainsworth Reserve, Sunshine; Ralph Reserve, Sunshine West; Ardeer Reserve, Ardeer; Larissa Reserve, St Albans; Keilor Lodge Reserve, Taylors Lakes; and Churchill Reserve, St Albans. The ugrades will all be completed by the end of 2019.
• Keilor Lodge Reserve in Taylors Lakes – A $472,000 upgrade to four female-friendly change rooms has been completed. • J.R. Parsons Reserve in Sunshine has an additional two female friendly modular change rooms onsite to cater for the use of two ovals and increased female participation. These were installed at a cost of more than $211,000.
• The Lakes Reserve Flagship Park, Taylors Lakes – is undergoing a $3.34 million transformation including new activities and leisure area, improved playground, better views and more space for picnics. The first stage is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.
Looking forward • New Sports Pavilions – Three new sports pavilions will be built at More Park, Delahey Reserve and Bon Thomas Reserve. These pavilions will include a social space, kitchen, toilets, change rooms, first aid rooms and storage. All three projects are currently in detailed design. Construction is expected to start mid-2020. • Alfrieda Street Plaza Upgrade Work on the new $1.4 million Alfrieda Street Plaza is expected to commence in early 2020 and will provide a multi-use civic space in the centre of St Albans. Including a bigger cultural events space, new road pavement, feature paving, tree planting, seating, lighting, and new pedestrian crossing. • Streetscape improvement – Council is in the detailed design stage to deliver a new pedestrian crossing on Devonshire Road and improvements to Clarke Street. The project is scheduled for tender by the end of year and construction is anticipated to start early 2020.

SPORT Calder United’s focus on the next generation Young Matildas midfielder MelindaJ Barbieri is back at Calder United. Barbieri has taken on a coaching role with Calder while she rehabilitates a knee injury. The 19-year-old is coaching some of Calder’s Miniroos players, while the club will aid her with her recovery. Barbieri, a contracted player with Melbourne Victory in the W-League, is a former Calder player in the NPL women’s competition. Calder president Eric Psarianos is thrilled to have Barbieri back at the club. “We’re going to help her with her rehab a bit, but it’s great that she’s also going to put back into the club and coach some of our Miniroos girls,” he said.
“She did her ACL playing with the Young Matildas about three or four months ago. She’s on a bit of a recovery now.” Calder United has been one of the most successful teams in NPL Women’s in recent seasons. Last season, Calder took out the treble, winning the cup competition, the premiers plate and triumphing in the grand final. Their focus this off season has been on the junior ranks and creating a pathway from juniors right through to the elite level. “We’re expanding our program to get girls as young as eight into the Calder set-up,” Psarianos said. “That way we can start that development
program even earlier. “It’s full steam ahead with that one for next season.” What has made it easier for Calder United to bolster its young ranks is the willingness of senior players to help out with coaching. Barbieri, Polly Doran and Sarah Lorca are just three of the players who will have a big involvement. Psarianos said it was important for the senior players to get involved as they are seen by the youngsters as role models. “Those young girls aspire to be like them,” he said. Lance Jenkinson

Thrilling first win for Lions

Slow starts hurt United By Lance Jenkinson Is it time for Western United to shake up its starting line-up? Slow starts have been United’s Achilles heel so far in its inaugural A-League season. The issue reared again in an upset 1-0 loss to Newcastle Jets at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday night. “The mindset needs to be a lot better right from kick off,” coach Mark Rudan said. “The intensity, the energy, it has to be there right from the outset, [otherwise] teams will punish you, irrespective of who they are.” For the fourth game in a row, Western United stared a deficit in the face. United was made to pay for its lacklustre start by young Jets striker Angus Thurgate, who scored his second A-League goal in the 36th minute. It was by no means a surprise lead for the Jets, who had been the more proactive side in the first half and were keen to pounce on the sloppy defending of the United backline. Rudan stopped short of suggesting there will be wholesale changes to the starting side because of the slow starts, but it will be up for discussion this week. “We’ll see what the answer might be
throughout the week,” he said. “Like I said, every player has to be on their toes and if we make changes, we make changes.” The silver lining for Western United is its response after conceding early goals. United has shown plenty of character to get back into games, but the frustration is that it takes a jolt in the form of conceding a goal before they click into gear. Rudan sent his team out in the second half with clear instructions and they followed them to the nth degree. In stark contrast to the first half, United moved the ball quicker, got into position faster and played with more variety, utilising both the wings and central avenues to put the Jets defence under pressure. If it was not for a goalkeeping masterclass from experienced Jets custodian Glen Moss, the outcome might have been different for Western United. Western United thought it had found an equaliser when Josh Risdon headed in a goal. However, upon VAR review, United striker Besart Berisha was rightly adjudged offside in the build-up play and the goal was scrubbed off. There were no complaints from Rudan about the decision. He did, however, rue the poor finishing of
United’s attackers. “I thought Connor Pain had a fantastic opportunity,” Rudan said. “He goes low there instead of high, he made it easy for the keeper, then Besart straight after, straight away from the corner. “It was just one of those games where we did everything but score and get ourselves back into the game.” Risdon was praised for his hard work. Returning from Socceroos duty, the winger’s workload was monitored throughout the game and he did not wane from his usual output. “His high speed sprints were unbelievable,” Rudan said. “We were tracking him live today, we had to be mindful of everything that he’s gone through. “It shows a test of his character, his mental fortitude and how strong he is, he just never gave up.” Max Burgess provided a spark off the bench, slotting into the midfield position vacated by the substituted Connor Chapman. United sorely missed the creativity of Panagiotis Kone, who was out with a hamstring injury. After five weeks of playing matches in Victoria, Western United will take to the skies to face a desperate Centrals Coast Mariners coming off two heavy defeats.
Taylors Lakes is breathing a little bit easier after breaking through for its first win of the season in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Lions overcame Box Hill by four runs in an edge-of-your-seat thriller at Lionheart Reserve on Sunday. Victory has seen the Lions rise up from the lower reaches and leave Box Hill to be one of two sides without a win this season. Taylors Lakes performed strongly with the bat, posting a competitive 7-210 off 45 overs. There were plenty of batsmen who chipped in for the Lions, but there were no bigger contributors than Marradon Bend, who led the way with 77, including eight fours and two sixes. Bend, who is also the Lions wicketkeeper, has made a flying start to the season with 188 runs at 47. Michael Brne made a handy 28 at the top of the order for the Lions, while Vishesh Bansal made 45 and featured in an 87-run third wicket partnership with Bend. Taylors Lakes managed to hold on for dear life when it came down to the last over. The Lions restricted Box Hill to 7-206, despite 111 not out from Somil Bandi. Rachid O’Neale was the lone multiple wicket taker for the Lions with 2-41, while four others – Aidan Brasher, captain Jarrod Wakeling, Liam Wolf and Aamir Raza – took singles. Taylors Lakes will make the trip to Melton for a crucial one-day game. Lance Jenkinson

Must-win game for Sunshine Heights Sunshine Heights is entering a crucial period in its Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 campaign. Sitting mid-table with a 2-2 record, the Heights could take giant strides on the ladder – one way or another – with the completion of its two-day game against Seabrook followed by two one-day games. Heights captain Luke Simpson is hoping the trajectory is north up the ladder. “We said after today’s play that we’re almost at the stage where we can’t afford to lose this game,” he said after day one against Seabrook. “If we want to play finals, these are the games we need to be winning. “After this week, we’ve got two one-dayers, so
it’s a really pivotal period in the season.” Sunshine Heights went to stumps on Saturday evening confident that it has enough runs on the board to trouble Seabrook. The Heights posted 208 in tough conditions with Saman Gonawala leading the way with 73. “Getting sent in, we’re taking that score,” Simpson said. “If we bowl to the standards that we want to bowl to, we’re pretty confident we can defend that.” Gonawala was praised for his grittiness en route to a half century. The Sunshine Heights go-to man rarely lets his team down. “He’s just a class bat,” Simpson said. “He’s had a fantastic start to the year.
“He batted a large chunk of the day and they weren’t ideal conditions, very overcast, the wicket wasn’t easy to bat on and Seabrook bowled really well all day.” Simpson made 36, featuring in an important 105-run fourth wicket stand with Gonawala. “That kind of steadied the ship a bit because we were 3-53 early on,” Simpson said. If there was a negative for Sunshine Heights, it was that a number of other batsmen got into the 20s and could not go on with it. “We just lacked conversions,” Simpson said. “It’s something we can work on in the upcoming weeks.” Lance Jenkinson

Big guns fire for Keilor
Sunshine Eagles new import and catcher Bryce Aldridge. (Luke Hemer). 200396_08
Import keen to deliver By Lance Jenkinson From the moment he set foot in Sunshine, import Bryce Aldridge has been ready to put in the work. Like all imports to the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1, Aldridge arrived in the Eagles nest with big expectations, both on and off the field. Aldridge is keen to deliver on both fronts and leave a positive legacy. “That’s the biggest thing, trying to give back a little bit to the game,” he said. “It’s given so much to me, it’s provided me so many opportunities, for instance being able to come down here and work for six months. “I’m trying to leave a good mark and make things better than how I found it. “Try and pass on some knowledge and see if I can gain some along the way as well.” Away from the diamond, Aldridge has been hands on in coaching and development. The 23-year-old American coaches the Sunshine under 18 team, helps out with the women’s team and runs school clinics. As much as Aldridge has put into the Eagles,
he is getting it reciprocated in the form of new friendships and experiences. “It’s been great so far,” Aldridge said. “The guys there have been more than welcoming. “So far the baseball has been good and the atmosphere is really what makes the club so fun. “I’m very happy with where I’m at. “A couple of the guys have been able to show me around a little bit and they’re helping me see the city.” Aldridge is being used as a utility at Sunshine. His primary position is catcher, but he has also played first base and corner outfield. He has adjusted to the competition quickly in the batters box, though he needs a touch of luck for maximum impact. “My first game, I had two lineouts, one to right field, one to centre field and both hard hit balls, but just right at the guys,” Aldridge lamented. “It seemed to keep happening for the next three games. “I’m starting to come around a little bit. “I’m hoping to catch a nice hot streak if I can.” Aldridge, who hails from Bloomington, Indiana, and played his college ball with the
46 BRIMBANK & NORTHWEST STAR WEEKLY Tuesday, 19 November, 2019
University of Indianapolis and Wabash College, is excited by what lies ahead with Sunshine. A finalist last season, Aldridge believes the team can take the next step if it maintains its current course. “From what I’ve seen so far, if we keep our attitude right and keep things going and doing the little things, we absolutely have a chance of going to the finals and doing some things,” he said. “We’ve got the talent, we’ve got the effort and the hard work, so it’s just a matter of putting it all together.” Meanwhile, Sunshine Eagles came back from a game down to take the honours in its three-game series with Geelong Baycats in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. After losing game one in a tight affair by one run, the Eagles came out with all guns blazing mid-week to record a 7-2 game two win. The Eagles closed out the series with a thrilling 3-2 win in the series decider at Barclay Reserve on Saturday. Sunshine has plenty of breathing space at the top of the ladder ahead of another tough three-game series with Blackburn Orioles starting on Saturday at Barclay Reserve.
Keilor went on a tear with the bat on day one of its clash with Strathmore in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division at Syd McGain Oval on Saturday. The Blues unleashed their full arsenal of batting weapons to post a monstrous 8-352 in 80 overs. Opener Nathan Beever and captain Kaushal Lokuarachchi posted centuries to have the Blues in a strong position at stumps. Beever played a patient role with 128 off 243 balls to be the anchor of the innings, while Lokuarachchi had the scoreboard humming with 112 off 122. The pair featured in a 169-run third wicket partnership. Once Lokuarachchi was removed, Beever combined for a 130-run fourth wicket stand with Nasir Malik, who scored a quickfire 75 off 65. Winless after four games, Keilor will be desperate to get a taste of that winning feeling on the second day. It was tough going for St Albans on the first day of its battle with Doutta Stars at Kings Park. The Saints were skittled for just 136. The Stars went to stumps on 2-73 and well in control of the game. In division 1 west, Deer Park mustered 212 against Tullarmarine at John McLeod Reserve. Ricky Suvada was the high run scorer for the Parkers with 58. While in the north group, PEGS is 1-6 in reply to West Coburg’s small score of 138. In division 2, Sunshine has the upper hand against St Andrews Pascoe Vale, making a solid start of 0-17 in their chase for the 175 victory target. Keilor Park struggled on day one against Newport-Digman, posting just 98 with the visitors 2-37 in reply. Lance Jenkinson
Parkers ready to rumble Deer Park is full of confidence heading into Saturday’s western derby clash with Yarraville Footscray on the road in the Bowls Victoria premier division. The Parkers made a statement in their last start with a 77-56 win over fellow finals contenders Bundoora RSL. The in-form Parkers will go into the clash with winless Yarraville Footscray as the hot favourites. Local sides had last weekend off for the Victorian Open. Lance Jenkinson

Mitsubishi ASX gets new look By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring AT A GLANCE
Mitsubishi Australia has announced details of major revisions to its small SUV, the ASX. Though it’s been on sale here since 2010 it frequently outsells all others in its class. To be frank, the main reason for that is the low prices achieved because it’s capital costs have been paid off. The Japan giant has long been a major player in the SUV and 4WD arenas - think Mitsubishi Outlander, Eclipse Cross, Pajero Sport and Pajero - not to forget the Triton pickup truck which is also selling its wheels off these days. The ASX Exceed and the new GSR model have a 2.4-litre engine with power of 123kW and torque at 222Nm. The others retain the existing 2.0-litre powerplant (110kW / 197Nm) This upgraded Mitsubishi ASX now has the very successful “Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield front end. In the ASX, black and chrome finishes have been added to the new-shape front bumper and grille. The semi-sporty GSR model has a rear spoiler, inside are black cloth headlining, microsuede and leather-look seats with red stitching. The Exceed has leather seats. An eight-inch display system replaces the previous seven-inch unit. Infotainment includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and DAB radio. The ASX Exceed also gains a Rockford Premium Audio system and TomTomŽ navigation. Active Stability Control is now standard across the Mitsubishi ASX range to improve handling and enhance safety. Electrochromatic rear view mirror and Forward Collision Mitigation, previously part of the ASX with ADAS package, are now standard across the range.
