A haunting we will go Ghoulish creatures, terrifying ghosts and menacing monsters will take over Hampshire Road this Halloween. The businesses of the Sunshine shopping precinct have banded together to bring the first ever Sunshine Halloween street party. Aside from the roaming ghouls and scary characters, there’ll be plenty of trick or treating. There will also be a number of decorated Halloween dens for the children to have their faces painted and grab some treats. Dens will be located out the front of the Sunshine Marketplace, at the corner of Devonshire Road, outside Simplicity Funerals, and opposite the Sunshine library. A highlight of the party promises to be the costume parade, where an award for best costume for both children and adults will be handed out. The Sunshine Halloween street party will take place on Thursday, October 31 from 4-6pm. The Sunshine Business Association is encouraging all children and their parents to get dressed up in their scariest outfits and join in the fun.

School ‘disaster’ looms By Tate Papworth Brimbank council will call on the state government for immediate action to prevent a looming education “disaster” in Derrimut. Despite a huge growth in population, there are no government secondary schools in the suburb. Students who live in Derrimut are zoned to either Sunshine College or Victoria University Secondary College, both a considerable distance away.

In May, mayor Lucinda Congreve called for research to be undertaken into the provision of a secondary college in the suburb. She said the results were alarming. “There are two challenges facing Derrimut students,” she said. “They are the distances they have to travel to get to school … our research found that it can take up to one hour to get to school on public transport, a mere five kilometres [away]. “The other is there’s a lack of options. Due to population increases in years to come,

Derrimut students may not even be zoned to either of the two schools currently available.” The council’s research suggests the Derrimut secondary school population will likely double in the next five to 10 years. Upgrades to campuses at VU Secondary College and Sunshine College will increase enrolment capacity to 2600, but Cr Congreve said it’s nowhere near enough. “If 60 per cent of the projected secondary-aged students in Derrimut and the surrounding areas were to attend both schools, that would

be over 5000 students that would need to be accommodated. “The capacity is only 2600. It does not take high school maths to work out that there is a significant shortfall – 2400 spots are short. “We’re not short of one school, we’re short of two schools in Derrimut. Put simply and frankly, this is a complete disaster for the Derrimut community.” Cr Congreve said the state government must be immediately made aware of the gap and must move swiftly to rectify it.

Airport results don’t fly: Resident By Tate Papworth Keilor residents have slammed the findings from Melbourne Airport’s community workshops. The airport held a series of workshops into the possibility of switching the alignment of its long-touted third runway to north-south facing. A total of 226 people participated in the airport’s community engagement sessions, flagging a number of key concerns. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers

spokesperson Susan Jennison said there was nothing new in the findings. “The key finding was noise and vibration concerns. I think anyone could’ve told you that was the main concern,” Ms Jennison said. “They’ve raised six major points – those are big issues for people, but they’re all totally predictable. “What they haven’t said is what they’re going to do with this information. Is this what the board will make a decision on or has it just been a step to tick a box to say they’ve gone out to the local community?”

The most frequently raised topics during the two-month review were the opportunity for improved infrastructure and services, noise and flight path mitigation, and economic and job opportunities. Environmental issues and compensation were also raised. “It’s all well and good to list these things, but where are the answers?” Ms Jennison said. “We were told the main reason for the possible switch of alignment was windsheer, but there’s no mention of windsheer from what I could see in any of this. “There’s also a lot of people who want answers

around various health and social impacts that would come with another runway, but there’s no answers.” She said the way the workshops were set up didn’t allow for open dialogue. “The workshop we went to was so constrained, almost orchestrated. “I’m not sure people could really ask the questions they wanted to ask or what the aim was. Was it to really find out what people were concerned about? “It’s raised all the points the community has for some time, but provided no answers.”

Sunshine’s silos spectacular Sunshine’s iconic silos will be the centrepiece of a night of projections, art, live music and performances. The Sunshine Silo Projection Festival on Saturday, November 16 will include food trucks and children’s activities, but the jewel in the crown will come when the suns goes down. Once darkness takes hold, the silos will be lit up with more than 1000 artworks and animations submitted by local primary and secondary students, audio-visual content created by local filmmaker Andrew Robb, and

projections. The festival is the brainchild of local resident Jacob Holley, who submitted the idea to the Victorian government’s Pick My Project scheme in late 2018. “We originally started with the idea of having a mural painted on the silos, but that wasn’t possible,” Mr Holley said. “The aim is to do something fun that celebrates our community. Sunshine is full of interesting, talented people, and we wanted to create something that showcases that.”

While the silos are the centrepiece, Mr Holley said there’s something for everybody. “The projections are going to be spectacular, but the whole of Parson’s Reserve will have a festival vibe from late afternoon,” he said. “We wanted to make it a great way to hang out with your neighbours and other locals – almost like a block party.” The all-ages event will run from 4-11pm. Brimbank council has flagged its intentions to sell a vacant parcel of land, however one councillor has slammed the move as premature. The council will soon give public notice that it intends to sell the land at 130 McIntyre Road, Sunshine North, after an officer’s report deemed it surplus to needs. The site, a 651 square metre undeveloped allotment, is currently vacant except for an improvised vegetable garden, which has been fenced off using makeshift fencing. Cr John Hedditch said a move to sell the land would be premature for an area starved of open space. “Like all of our councillors, I’m really proud of our parks and our playgrounds, but there are a number of areas where we have issues,” Cr Hedditch said. “North Sunshine is an area where we have an open space deficit and there’s no clear program at all to address that deficit, in my opinion. “For me this is a premature sale. “I say that acknowledging the council officer report, I say that acknowledging that today, there appears to be no useful use for it … I say it knowing that in the future, communities will need buffer spaces where they can introduce new, different activities that may not have been thought of today. Suicide: We need to talk By Ewen McRae

“In terms of language, that really changes our ability to identify men’s own feelings and emotions. And that comes through with language like ‘you need to man up’ or ‘stiff upper lip’, ‘boys don’t cry’, all idioms that we could do without because they lead to men not wanting to talk about their feelings and emotions because they’re worried about being judged. “What I’m hoping through the work of the Primary Health Network and the online training, is to give people the opportunity to feel comfortable talking about suicide and being gatekeepers within the community to allow anybody to ask ‘Are you OK?’ and feel comfortable talking about it.” The increased visability of events like R U OK? Day, and the work of local Men’s Sheds and sporting clubs has put mental health in the spotlight in recent times, Mr Bentley-Ross said. “There’s a lot of work being done in this space,” he said. “There’s a lot of targeted work being done in areas of masculinity where a lot of men might not feel safe to have those conversations, and I think that’s an important step to help those that are statistically more at risk.” NWMPHN is offering a short online course – QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) – designed to help people recognise if someone they know is at risk of suicide. When it comes to suicide rates in Australia, the stats don’t lie. Latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics have the suicide rate at 12.6 per 100,000 people, it also shows that men are three times more likely to take their own life than women. CoHealth community mental health worker Joseph Bentley-Ross said while increased awareness and education on the importance of good mental health was improving, there was always more that could be done.

Big plans for Sydenham Park By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has bold plans for Sydenham Park. A draft master plan for the Keilor North site, aimed at opening up the area to the wider community, was tabled at the council’s October meeting. Cr Bruce Lancashire said it was exciting to see the proposal go out for public consultation. “Sydenham Park … is our largest park, with the Organ Pipes National Park to the west,” he said. “There is lots of land available

for recreation sporting facilities and of course we have this amazing $65 million diamond interchange off the freeway. “It’s not surprising that this was the site that has become part of our Matilda’s [women’s national soccer team] bid. A truly exciting opportunity, if we’re selected for further consideration, with the Matildas getting off their aircrafts from across Australia and being only 10 minutes away from their training facility.” The master plan states that the opportunity for sports and recreation at Sydenham Park

should be considered, although it is likely there will be constraints on where they can be located within the park because of standard requirements to meet desired levels of play and competition. The iconic Robertson’s Homestead also figures in the master plan. The plan notes that the homestead requires major restoration works to prevent further deterioration. Its location, current state and potential for future restoration is labelled for further consideration. Cr John Hedditch said he believed more

work needed to be done before the document went out for consultation. “This has been a two-year project run by a committee of half the council, but this is a council decision and it’s one that we shouldn’t bulldoze through,” Cr Hedditch said. “This particular piece of work has been going on for two years, we’ve had it for two weeks as councillors. “It’s sensitive, complex and has big implications for the future of the River Valley in this area and it’s too rushed for no good apparent reason.”

Bike training on track The Brimbank Bicycle Education Centre has unveiled two new bike-learning tracks which organisers believe are an Australian-first teaching aid. The $60,000 tracks – dubbed Rotary and Lions after the clubs of the same name – were officially opened last weekend. Taylors Lakes Lions Club president Neil Hunichen said both tracks would serve the community well for many years to come. “Rotary is a flat track, shaped as a large figure eight,” he said. “It’s about slow riding. Children need to build confidence and that’s definitely achievable on a flat track. “They can motor and glide along the track and develop their skills in steering and respect at the junctures where you have to give way.” However it’s the Lions track that Mr Hunichen says is a new concept. “The Lions track is an incline. It’s a 25 to

30 metre track with a gradient that allows the child to go down a slope,” he said. “When they get down to the bottom if they’re not controlling the bike, they go off into a safe grass area. “But if they are, they cruise along the bottom, they come uphill.” The major point of difference is the use of balance bikes. A balance bike is a training bike that helps children learn balance and steering. They have no foot pedals, no drivetrain, no chain, no gears and no gear shifters. Mr Hunichen said teaching children to balance on a bike first was a logical step. “It’s a different way of going about it. We haven’t seen another track like it. “I could say honestly, in Australia there’s nothing like this.” Tate Papworth

Brimbank detectives arrested a man after executing a warrant in Hillside on October 15. Officers attended an Elgin Close address to search for stolen goods. It is alleged police located three stolen motorbikes, two firearms, an imitation firearm, two lasers, three designer watches and 10 mountain bikes during the search. A 28-year-old Hillside man was arrested a short time later at an address in Taylors Hill. The man was charged with being a prohibited person possessing a firearm, prohibited person possessing an imitation firearm, theft of a motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, committing an indictable offence whilst on bail and other offences. He faced Sunshine Magistrates Court on October 16 and was remanded until October 22.

Grade six pupils at Resurrection Catholic School ditched the textbooks for aprons last week. The school was visited by educational incursion provider Big Pocket Productions and students spent Wednesday morning making their own pasta. The school’s lote teacher Rose Grech said it was a terrific way to pay homage to Italian culture. “It’s a fantastic cultural experience. The children learn Italian here at school and this is one way of getting them involved in that culture,” Ms Grech said. “We have 521 children at this school and they come from about 20 different cultural backgrounds.

“We’re a very multicultural school, so any activities we can provide to recognise that, we do.” Jill Tascone of Big Pocket Productions said it’s always a thrill to see young minds immersed in another culture. “The beauty about this is that it’s an equaliser,” Ms Tascone said. “This workshop was tying in with immigration and the bringing of Italian culture – especially food customs – to Australia.” Ms Tascone said the workshop held personal significance for her. “It was a personal journey of my extended family coming over,” she said. Data released by the council this month shows more than two million customer service interactions were carried out across the city’s five libraries in the past financial year. A substantial increase in visitation was experienced by the Sunshine and Keilor libraries – visitation to the Keilor library increased by 27.3 per cent, while loans jumped a massive 33.8 per cent.

Sunshine library visitation climbed 12.7 per cent, but new members dipped 5.1 per cent, while loans also fell 5.3 per cent. Deer Park and Sydenham library remain stable but the picture wasn’t as bright for St Albans library. Visitation at St Albans library was down 11.6 per cent, loans down 9.5 per cent and new membership fell by 0.6 per cent. There was a 23.4 per cent increase in loans of e-books and e-magazines across the city’s five libraries. The council said that the decline at St Albans indicates that the facility is not meeting community needs. It cited constrained space at the library as likely to be a significant contributor to the drop in visitation. Cr Victoria Borg said further investigation was required. “It is interesting to note that while a

substantial increase in visitation was experienced by Sunshine and Keilor libraries, useage at St Albans library is declining,” Cr Borg said. “As we have noted in one of the previous reports … a study will be conducted

in regards to the St Albans library to see why this is happening.” Numbers at the municipality’s other two libraries, Deer Park and Sydenham, remained similar to the previous year.

Paramedics are calling on residents to download a phone app as part of a campaign to encourage the community to step in after a cardiac arrest. Paramedics will be holding CPR displays at the Caroline Springs library this month to demonstrate the GoodSAM app. Ambulance Victoria Melton senior team manager Fida Masri said it was important the community knew what to do if they were with someone experiencing a heart attack. “We know that if a bystander steps in and begins CPR before we arrive it doubles the person’s chance of survival. “Minutes matter in cardiac arrest, and the sooner a person receives CPR and the application of a defibrillator, the better their chances of survival. “Bystanders are the critical first link in the chain of survival and can help keep patients alive before our highly-trained paramedics arrive.” Ms Masri said 16 Victorians suffer cardiac arrest each day, and only one in 10 survive. The GoodSAM Responder app alerts responders to a nearby suspected cardiac arrest and the location of the nearest AED. Career worth celebrating By Tate Papworth After nearly five decades, the final bell has rung on the career of a much loved teacher. Albion North Primary School teacher Rasma Melderis has retired after 29 years at the school and 47 years in the industry. She said her last day was incredibly bittersweet. “There’s sadness at leaving, but I know it was time. Time for the next generation to take over,” she said. “We’re very lucky in this little pocket of North Sunshine. The community is amazing, the children are just beautiful. “That’s what made coming to work fun and why I stayed here 29 years. “Things haven’t really changed, but the kids are still what it’s about. “It’s fun to see new students come through … I’ve even ended up teaching the children of former students. “There’s been a few challenges along the way, but on the whole, they’ve been a great group of kids to teach.” While the children may have stayed a constant, the building has drastically changed. “This school has been knocked down and rebuilt. At the start we were in rooms where the corridor was sinking, but now it’s incredible,” Ms Melderis said. “But this area is growing, so I don’t think building will stop any time soon.” With one chapter closed, Ms Melderis plans to begin a new one. “I plan on travelling. I want to learn Italian. I love languages,” she said. “I also have a Latvian heritage. With that I’d love to go back there and have a look at it. “It’s funny how busy you can be, you’re able to do a lot more when you’re not planning yourself around corrections and planning.”

Smoke monitor for Brimbank Brimbank is set to receive a new mobile air monitoring unit. Select SES units across Victoria operate mobile air quality monitoring gear as part of the Environment Protection Authority Victoria’s (EPA) Incident Air Monitoring network. EPA chief environmental scientist Dr Andrea Hinwood said the SES volunteers would provide high-tech air quality monitoring at major fires and other incidents for the protection of the public. They join 10 other units which have been in operation since 2017. She said the addition of four new units is expected to reduce the response time to incidents. “The air monitors will record levels of what is known as PM2.5, the small particles found in smoke that can affect people’s health. The higher the reading, the more particles and the greater risk to health,” Dr Hinwood said. SES deputy chief officer Alistair Drayton said the program adds to the state’s emergency response capacity. “Like the original 10, the four new mobile units have been placed in locations selected by EPA and VICSES to enable response to smoke events to occur quickly,” Mr Drayton said. Air quality information collected by the mobile units will be available to the community. Information about potential health impacts will also be available through the EPA at www.epa.vic.gov.au

Brimbank council will explore funding options outside of rates revenue in a bid to strengthen its ability to fund major capital works projects. Mayor Lucinda Congreve introduced the idea at the council’s October meeting and called for a report detailing options for alternative funding initiatives, including associated benefits and risks. “Brimbank has enormous potential for growth and is fast becoming a major activity

“That’s challenging when we consider that council has lost $20 million in forecasted revenue since rate-capping was introduced – enough to fund one-third of the St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub. “Without alternative funding initiatives our community runs the risk of suffering ageing infrastructure and gaps in major capital investment for years, if not decades, to come,” she said. Cr Congreve said the approach could bring about significant long-term benefits.

Student of the law will help break down barriers. “Being an African student, the reputation we’ve gained isn’t a great one, so I want to be able to restore that and help people realise we’re good people as well. “It’s an unfair reputation, it’s pretty much judging a book by its cover.” Vike is currently completing his year 12 studies and next year hopes to go to Victoria University before applying to join the force. “I want to go to university first and study criminal justice and after that I’d like to do a little travel,” he said. “It’s about getting a bit of life experience up before I apply.”

A Braybrook student is well on his way to achieving his career goals and changing perceptions. Year 12 student Vike Martin Ashien has recently completed a School-Based Apprenticeship Training (SBAT) program with Sunshine Police. Vike spent each Monday with Sunshine Police for 12 months, learning what’s required to be an officer. He said the experience made him even more determined to become a police officer. “What appeals to me most is the idea of bringing communities together to achieve social cohesion,” he said. “It was a great experience, meeting lots of police and seeing how they do their job. “I thought police were serious all the time, but knowing them better and seeing them joke around showed me they’re just like everyone else.” He said he hopes his Sudanese background

Bellissimo poetry Springside West Secondary College may have only introduced Italian classes this year, but they’re already having an impact. The school entered 73 students in a statewide Italian poetry competition run by Swinburne University recently, and while several students received special commendations, the efforts of two stood out. Year 7 student Christian came fourth in his section, while Isabella took out the top prize for year 8. Italian teacher Trish Testa said it was a proud day for the school and students. “Poetry is pretty important in the Italian language,” Ms Testa said. “So this was an opportunity for the students

Awards raise the style stakes By Alesha Capone Glamourous gowns, delightful dresses and creative clothing featured on the catwalk at the 22nd Fashion Awards Australia in Hoppers Crossing recently. The annual event, organised by Heather Marcus, aims to recognise talented school and TAFE students and new and emerging fashion designers. Of several awards handed out on the night, St Albans Secondary College received the John Claringbold Memorial School Cup, which is presented to the school which amasses the most points during the competition. Penola Catholic College in Broadmeadows placed second and Geelong College third. Ballarat Secondary College students also won four awards. Ms Marcus said she wanted to thank the teachers from the colleges and schools that entered the awards, in addition to the students, designers, her back-up team and the staff at the Encore Events Centre, where the awards took place on Friday. Cr Bob Turner As my current term as Mayor draws to an end, it’s timely to reflect on some of the highlights we’ve shared over the past 12 months. I am extremely proud of Council’s accomplishments and the positive outcomes we achieved for our community. I’ve had the privilege of welcoming hundreds of new residents to our City; and acknowledged the achievements of our local sports people, volunteers and young people through Council’s awards programs.

Did you know that in November and December, City of Melton residents can dispose of household green waste for free? With spring comes sunshine, and the urge to prune, plant and potter about in the garden. It’s also the perfect time to clean up your property before the fire season starts. In a bid to divert organic waste materials from landfill, Council is again offering City of Melton residents the opportunity to dispose of household green waste at the Melton Reycling Facility for free. Simply bring your clean green waste to the Melton Recycling Facility along with proof of residency and the usual fee will be waived.

We’ve completed of a number of major community infrastructure projects, including Westwood Drive road and bridge; Caroline Springs Leisure Centre and Sub-regional Tennis Facility; City Vista Sports Precinct; Kurunjang Community Hub; and playspaces at Hannah Watts Park, Bill Cahill Reserve and Arnolds Creek.

These projects were delivered as part of Council’s biggest capital works program to date, and complement more than 120 community services, programs and events delivered to local residents. Cr Michelle Mendes Spring certainly turned on the great weather last week when thousands of residents came out to enjoy Lakeside Alive in Caroline Springs. Held around idyllic Lake Caroline, it was great to see so many people delighting in the roving entertainment, kids’ activities and food trucks. Council strives to deliver quality events that create a sense of pride and belonging throughout our City. One such event, our annual Djerriwarrh Festival, is just around the corner, and will be held at Melton Recreation Reserve on Saturday 9 November. This year’s festival promises more exciting kids’ activities and live performances than ever. There will be artisan market stalls, food trucks, pet expo, a big bonfire and a spectacular fireworks display.

Headlining performers, Sneaky Sound System, are not to be missed, so I encourage everyone to come along, soak up the atmosphere, and celebrate everything that makes the City of Melton great. It was a pleasure to see so many local residents and community groups share their project ideas at our 2020/2021 Budget Engagement session earlier this month. This was a great opportunity for residents to discuss their ideas with us directly and put their projects on Council’s radar. I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to present their ideas. Green project wins gold The Greening the West initiative to plant one million trees across the west has taken out a Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Award. The project was named the winner of the Environmental Protection category, which recognises leadership and excellence in protection and prevention of harm to the environment. The project was delivered between 2015-18 with the aim of bringing about better health and social outcomes and enhanced liveability for communities in the western suburbs through urban greening. To date 1,072,320 trees and shrubs have been planted across 320 parks, reserves, open spaces, roadsides and private land, covering an area of 1755 hectares. More than 4500 volunteers and 100 private

landowners participated in 61 community events and tree planting days. The project has been delivered through a number of partners, including LeadWest, Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority, City West Water, Melbourne Water and Brimbank council. Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority’s chief executive David Buntine, said the project is a great example of what can be achieved when governments and communities work together. “We can achieve more together than we can alone … this project has made a significant and lasting difference to Melbourne’s west.”

Plans by George Cross Soccer Club to develop a $500,000 soccer complex in Duke Street, Sunshine, is likely to bring a storm of protest from other soccer clubs. Sunshine Commissioner, Mr Alex Gillon gave approval in principle to the proposal at the council’s meeting on September 25.

The Bulldogs will celebrate their victory over the VFL with a parade through the streets of Footscray on Saturday. Footscray footballers and everyone involved in the Footscray Fightback Campaign will assemble at the Western Oval at midday. The parade will end at Railway Place.

Plans to turn an “eyesore” in Sunshine into a stylish residential precinct were unveiled last week. The proposal for the redevelopment of the H.V McKay metal trades wing of the former Sunshine Technical School were placed on public exhibition by land developer Millennium Properties Pty Ltd, which bought the site from the State Government in March.

For 40 years, the UnitingCare Sunshine Mission has been lending its support to thousands of the area’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged residents. While the demographics and situation of the needy have changed over the years, the Sunshine Mission and its army of volunteers have been there to lend a hand.

MY BRIMBANK Theresa Stefanovski has lived in Taylors Hill for more than a decade. A keen fitness enthusiast, she noticed a lack of options in the area and decided to do something about it. She spoke with Tate Papworth. What’s your connection to Brimbank? I live in Taylors Hill. I’ve lived out here for 12 years and worked locally as a hairdresser. What do you like best about the area? It’s just beautiful. There’s a lot of lovely houses by the lake, fantastic restaurants and cafes, it’s all here. When I first moved in, there wasn’t much around, but it’s grown so much in that time.

So you’re doing something about that? Absolutely. We realised there was really only one gym in the Caroline Springs area, so we’re opening another. Tell us about it. It’s called CS 24/7. It’s going to be a 24 hour gym. It’s actually come about really quickly. About three months ago we found out that

SPORT United youngster shows his pace in home opener There is a ruthless attitude about Western United in its inaugural A-League season. United has picked up four out of a possible six points, claiming a victory overseas against Wellington Phoenix and drawing with premiers plate holders Perth Glory. That start would be enough to satisfy most newly established clubs, but the boys in green and black were left yearning for more after Saturday evening’s 1-1 draw with the Glory at GMHBA Stadium. Young United substitute Dylan Pierias, who came on late in the second half to add some spark up front, is not one to settle for honourable results. A homegrown western suburbs product, Pierias conveyed his team’s disappointment at failing to send the home fans away with a win over the Glory. “At the end of the day, we’ll take the point, but we’re definitely a team that always wants to win and doesn’t accept losing,” he said. “We’ll look back and review it and see what we can improve on.”

Pierias was involved in one of the key moments of the game. The 19-year-old almost stole the headlines when winger Josh Risdon played a delightful ball in behind the Glory defence. Pierias used his blistering speed to split two Glory defenders, took two delicate touches on the ball and then chipped Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy. The ball looked for all money destined for the back of the net, but it did not dip enough and kissed the crossbar. “Sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” Pierias lamented. “It was just instinct to chip it and a few of the boys asked me, could I slot it past him? “I’m the type of guy that I get on the field and try to just do my thing and I decided to chip it and unfortunately it didn’t go in, but what can you do? “He’s obviously a good goalkeeper, I just did my best and it didn’t go in.” In the 10 minutes that Pierias was on the field, the former Spring Hills and Keilor Park

junior showed that he has the goods to mix it at A-League level. Pierias might even be an ace up the sleeve of United coach Mark Rudan to use in an attacking sense, though he is happy to play whatever role is best for the team. “I’m traditionally a right wing back, but I’ve

got a bit of pace and I’ve got a few attributes to play up front,” he said. “I used to actually play up front when I was younger. “The boss trusted me to go up there and he said just make some runs and use my pace, so that’s what I did. “I listened to instruction and tried to have as much fun as I could and try and make an impact for the boys.” Pierias conceded it was a result that could have gone either way, but felt Western United finished the stronger of the two teams. “Both teams had their moments,” he said. “It was a tough tight game, but I think in the second half we took it to them. “We should’ve deserved the points there. “Our first half was a bit shaky, but we re-grouped and took it to them in the second half.” Pierias will be eager for more game time when Western United takes on his former club Melbourne City at GMHBA Stadium this Sunday at 6pm. United’s missed opportunities By Lance Jenkinson It was a tale of two halves for Western United in a pulsating 1-1 draw with Perth Glory in its home A-League opener at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday. In stark contrast to a week earlier, United came out lifeless, lacking imagination and lucky to be on level terms at half-time, but Mark Rudan’s team re-grouped after the break and showed the serious attacking threat it possesses in an impressive second 45 minutes. Panagiotis Kone, the first of United’s marquee signings, brought the game to life with an unforgettable first United goal on Australian soil in the 49th minute. The crowd rose to its feet in unison when Kone’s long range curling strike evaded the out-stretched arms of Perth Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy and slammed into the back of the net. It is a goal that will be replayed over and over again and one for the 6888 spectators in attendance to say ‘I was there for that’. United right winger Josh Risdon was pleased with the response of his team after a lacklustre first half. “The first half obviously wasn’t the best,” he said. “It was pretty sloppy on our behalf and we couldn’t really keep the ball too well and we sort of got trapped in our own half. “I thought in the second half we responded very well. “We put them on the back foot and created a lot of chances. “A brilliant goal by ‘Pana’ there and we could’ve pinched a goal at the end there.” Western United had a swathe of opportunities to add to its goal tally in the second half. The always busy Alessandro Diamanti had a long range effort parried away by Reddy. Striker Besart Berisha thought he scored for United, only to be ruled offside, much to the displeasure of the home fans. Young substitute Dylan Pierias came the closest, chipping the keeper only for the ball to drop on to the crossbar. Instead of doubling its lead, United coughed up its advantage. Kristian Popovic, the son of Glory coach Tony, made United rue their missed chances when he scored from a header after some silver service from Neil Kilkenny in the 76th minute. Kurto was one of United’s best players, making a number of spectacular saves. “He was the goalkeeper of the year [for Wellington Phoenix] last year and he’s been outstanding for us,” Risdon said. “It’s really good as a defender to know you’ve got someone in goals who can get you out of sticky situations. “He’s been immense.” Kone had some of the more noteworthy chances for Western United in the second half. Those chances came through his willingness

to present for teammates and get into dangerous positions. He was one of a few United players frustrated not to find a winner. Connor Pain was superb on the left wing, while Diamanti’s class shone through. “Diamanti is obviously a world class player,” Risdon said. “He’s got 360 vision.” Risdon is pleased with the look and feel of Western United early in the season. The cohesion for a newly constructed team is

a credit to the work of Rudan, his coaching staff and the players willingness to buy in. “We’re building as a team,” Risdon said. The firsts keep coming for Western United in its inaugural season. United will play its first local derby against Melbourne City at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 6pm. Risdon believes three Melbourne derbies – contested between United, City and Melbourne Victory – have added more excitement around the A-League in this city.

Sunshine’s hot streak continues with another win

Sunshine is setting the pace in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 competition. The Eagles have moved a game clear on top of the ladder after a 6-0 win over Cheltenham Rustlers at Barclay Reserve on Sunday. The Stuart Clayton-coached Eagles are a perfect 4-0 and they are the only remaining undefeated team in the competition. “We’re plugging along alright,” Clayton said. “The side that we played today just came up from division 2, but, at the end of the day, you’ve just got to beat whoever you’ve got on the park.” Sunshine knows it will need to take it up a cog for its upcoming three-game series with Newport Rams. The western suburbs rivalry has dished up some tasty encounters over the years, but this one will have some added spice to it after the off season. The Eagles not only brought in one of Newport’s most promising youngsters in Nikau

Pouaka-Grego, but they fought tooth and nail to extract Riley Barr from the Rams’ clutches. Barr was on the mound in Sunshine’s shut-out win over Cheltenham on Saturday. He has been a supurb addition to the Eagles. “He’s pitched in three games for us,” Clayton said. “He threw five innings today and didn’t give up a run. “He’s been sensational for us on the mound.” Barr’s addition completes a stellar pitching department for Sunshine. Alongside Barr are Jeremy Young, Griffin Weir and Adam Irons – all have the strength in their arms for long stints on the mound. The pitching depth is where the Eagles hope to gain an advantage later in the summer. “They’re all senior guys that have been around for a while,” Clayton said. “They understand the big picture. “If everyone is sharing the innings around, come the end of the season, if we’re lucky enough to make finals, everyone will be fresh.”

In registering six runs, Sunshine did what it needed to do in the big moments to keep Cheltenham at arm’s length. Young had the big hit, scoring a triple to bat in three runs with bases loaded. Eagles import Bryce Alridge hit a double to send home two runners. Sunshine has been the most potent team from the batters box so far, but Clayton issued a warning to his team not to get too carried away because tougher opposition pitchers await. “Realistically, we played a team that came up from division 2 last year,” he said. “If we can score three or four runs, we’ll be pretty competitive in most games. “Today we scored six and held the other side to zero, so we’re going alright. Lions find top-order form By Lance Jenkinson Taylors Lakes finished a rain-interrupted first day against Balwyn in a strong position on 7-196 in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group at Lionheart Reserve on Saturday. The Lions will begin the second day with a further 15 overs to bat and the benefit of knowing the situation in the game and what they want to achieve out of the pointy end of their innings. Lions captain Jarrod Wakeling has set a target of 230-plus, but, above all, has preached the same patience shown from his batsmen as they produced on an impressive first day. “The first half an hour, it’s a matter of the guys playing themselves in, getting comfortable with the wicket, having a look at the bowlers and getting back into game mode,” he said. “We won’t go out all guns blazing, we’ll try and work into the day. “If we face 15 overs with three wickets in hand, if we can get 30 or 40 extra runs in that time, it probably puts us in a good position transitioning into our bowling.” Taylors Lakes’ top order was rock solid to

start the game. The Lions went out with a plan and stuck to it to the nth degree. Michael Brne and Chris Marr got the innings off to a strong start with a 68-run opening stand. Brne was the aggressor with 45, including 10 fours, while Marr played the steady hand with 37. Brne’s knock was one of the most eye-catching of the day. “He went out and played his normal game, which is aggressive and anything pitched up, he’ll whack over your head,” Wakeling said. “That type of batting put us on the front foot. “He played some unorthodox shots that got us a few boundaries and really got us going. “The other opener [Marr] was more patient, left the good ball, defended well and was involved in a couple of partnerships.” Marcus Just picked up the baton when Brne was dismissed and made 37. Backing up from his 32 a game prior, Just appears to be on the verge of a big score in the not-too-distant future. Marradon Bend, who scored an unbeaten half century in the season opener, made a

handy contribution with 21, while Lachlan Marr dazzled with a quick-fire 33, including seven fours. There was a lot to like about how Taylors Lakes’ top order went about its business. “We wanted guys to be patient, put some value on their wicket and take their time and everyone in the top five did exactly that,” Wakeling said. “They all got really good starts and put on some partnerships. “Moving forward, it would be nice for one of them 30s or 40s to turn into 70s, 80s or 100, but given that we had some goals at the start of the day and all the boys did what we wanted to do, it’s put us in a good position. “The boys were happy that they spent some time in the middle, but it was good to see there was disappointment there that they didn’t go on with it.” Taylors Lakes negotiated most of what Balwyn’s attack threw its way. However, Balwyn off spinner George Drissell, who took 3-37 off 18 overs, caused a few headaches. “He was extremely accurate and very patient with the ball,” Wakeling said.

While many of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association matches were drawn due to bad weather, Sunshine managed to sneak a 25-run win over Williamstown CYMS in division 2. Troy Stone was the backbone to Sunshine’s competitive score of 6-188 off its 40 overs. Undoubtedly the match winner for the Crows was Ruwan Jayaweera, who took 7-30 off seven overs to leave CYs all out for 163. In senior division, the clash between Keilor and St Albans was set for a grandstand finish, but rain impacted on the result and a draw was the outcome. St Albans was on 9-163 in its chase for Keilor’s 9-170.

Sam Butler has been unveiled as coach of St Albans in the Western Region Football League division 1. Butler was a long-time West Coast Eagles player in the AFL, where he brought up 166 games, including being a member of the 2006 premiership team. The 33-year-old is not exactly a left field appointment, having had an involvement with St Albans in a brief stint as a player under outgoing coach Perry Meka last season.
