St Albans student Augustine Morris is chasing his Olympic dream. The 16-year-old is a national champion and has his mind set on going further. “I want to compete at the Olympics in the 100, 200 and 400. Mainly the 200 and 400. At this level I’m a national champion and have represented Victoria. “I want to get recognised by the rest of the world next, that’s my next goal. “I don’t think of myself as someone who is only 16 years-old and can’t do a lot of things, I think of myself as someone who can go to the Olympic games next year and actually win.” Augustine is well on his way after a recent nomination for the Australian Olympic Change-Maker program. The program recognises and rewards students who are demonstrating the Olympic spirit through leadership and driving positive change in their communities. “I was told by a leader at the school that I’d be a perfect candidate for this award, so we sat down, put a list together and I made a video selling myself to the Olympic committee. “I was invited to a conference with 120 other students from Victoria, which was an amazing experience, one I’ll never forget.” Augustine was nominated for the program after establishing a health program at Catholic Regional College, St Albans to “encourage students to be comfortable in their own skin and enjoy who they are”. “Now over 20 students have access to free personal training and the opportunity to achieve their dreams.” As for dreams, Augustine says there’s no slowing him down as he sprints towards his. Olympic spirit shines

Up to 20 students from Springside College in Caroline Springs are fighting a “bureaucratic bungle” which has locked them out of their preferred high school. In 2017 the Education Department announced Springside College would transition from a P-9 school to a P-6 school. Parents say they were told that students affected by the change would be accepted into nearby Springside West Secondary College for three years. However about 20 students this year have been rejected from Springside West because they fall outside of the school zone. Eva Fattore, whose daughter Erika has been told she can’t attend Springside West next year, said they live just one street outside of the zone. “They have gone back on their promise. It has been a big mess,” Ms Fattore said. “We thought there was a three year agreement so we didn’t look at other schools. If we had known she wouldn’t be accepted we would have looked for a new school.” Ms Fattore said Erika has been told to attend Copperfield College. She said all of Erika’s friends would be going to Springside West. The Department of Education last week acknowledged a small number of parents may have received incorrect advice relating to Springside West Secondary College accepting all enrolments. According to the department Springside West wrote to Springside P–9 families earlier this year to clarify the school would be managing enrolments in line with the department’s placement policy, and would limit enrolments to the designated neighbourhood zone. Geoff Cain, whose son’s application to Springside West was rejected because the family lives 200 metres outside of the enrolment zone, said his son was stressed about the prospect of attending another school. “My son will be transitioned to a brand new school where he knows no one,” Mr Cain said. “All the kids are suffering stress and anxiety.” Mr Cain has appealed the decision to the education department. “We have become aware that children who did not attend Springside College have been placed at Springside West on compassionate grounds. We are entitled to ask why the priority order of placement policy hasn’t been correctly applied,” he said. The department said Springside West has been assigned as a designated neighbourhood zone to manage the growth in the area.

Recycling update Kerbside recycling has resumed as normal. Brimbank Council has entered into an interim agreement to have the community’s recycling sent to the recycling processing facility in Laverton North. It is expected this interim agreement will remain in place until such time as a new owner takes over the recycling facility, at which point Council will need to negotiate another contract.

Two dead after long weekend By Tate Papworth A pregnant mum and a 17-year-old boy died in separate incidents across Brimbank at the weekend. Keilor Downs woman Helena Broadbent, 32, died after she was ejected from a car in Keilor Downs on Saturday. Police allege the mother of two had an altercation with a man outside her home just before 1pm. The altercation continued in a car driven by the same man. Ms Broadbent fell from the back

seat onto the road as the car was driven around a corner. Ms Broadbent, who neighbours say was about six months pregnant, was taken to hospital where she delivered a baby via c-section. The baby remains in hospital in a critical condition. Ms Broadbent later died from her injuries. A 35-year-old-man, William Wilson, was charged on Sunday evening with dangerous driving causing death. In a separate incident, 17-year-old Maaka Hakiwai died in hospital on Saturday afternoon after he was stabbed multiple times.

An 18-year-old boy was also stabbed during the attack in Kings Park about 2.30pm. He remains in a stable condition at The Alfred hospital. The incidents followed the release of latest crime statistics which revealed a 1.57 per cent increase in offences recorded across Brimbank in the 12 months to June, 2019. Crimes against the person increased by 71 offences. Stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour offences had the most significant spike, jumping from 444 to 506 recorded

offences. Sexual offences also increased, up 20 from 357 in 2018. Six homicide offences were recorded in the 12 months to June, the lowest number recorded in Brimbank since 2012. Drug offences fell from 1308 to 1171. Police have previously stated a targeted approach to tackling drugs within Brimbank was beginning to bear fruit. Drug dealing and trafficking offences fell by 16 offences while drug use and possession offences dropped from 1040 to 913. However cultivating or manufacturing offences slightly increased from 57 to 69 offences.

A pet project has blossomed into a million dollar business for a Hillside woman. Ana Gavia began selling swimwear she’d designed as a side project while she put herself through medical school. With about $200 to her name, she never expected what would happen next. In just two short years Ms Gavia’s business PinkColada has flourished and rakes in $1.5 million a year. “I didn’t think this would turn into anything, I was a uni student with no money, so it wasn’t really something I’d ever thought about,” Ms Gavia said. “But I started posting online, taking

Truganina Storage King manager Priyal Dassanayaka said staff felt compelled to help after reading a Star Weekly article calling for volunteers. “We saw the article calling for volunteers and just knew it was our time to lend a hand,” he said. “This is such a rapidly growing area with lots of people, but there’s not so many volunteers, which is a little sad.” Staff will man stations as designated by RSL staff. “We’re offering up a storage unit if needed and we’ll have staff wherever they need us. “The manpower is there, it’s just up to the RSL to tell us how they want to use it.” Finding volunteers to sell poppys has been a perennial problem for a number of RSLs, including Caroline Springs. Mr Dassanayaka said the cause was deserving of support. “This isn’t something we want to make too commercial,” he said. “It’s about getting out there, engaging with and helping out our local community.” Volunteers at the Caroline Springs RSL told Star Weekly that an additional six volunteers would make the world of difference. While they had enough numbers to run the campaign, they were previously unable to man certain stations and risked volunteer burnout.

Calling all junior ninjas Little ninjas have descended upon Watergardens Town Centre these school holidays. A number of inflatable Ninja Kid obstacle courses have been set up around the mall and centre manager Joe Galea said they’d proven to be a big hit. “With courses, the biggest being 12 metres long … and a special course for the little ones near Kathmandu, this school holiday activation is sure to delight kids and parents of all ages,” Mr Galea said. The course is a race between two ninjas. Both competitors step up to the line, the big screen will count down to the start and then the timer begins.

At the end of the course, the participants hit a red button on their side of the finish line and the winner is shown live on the big screen. Afterwards, photographs of the little ninjas competing will be emailed for future bragging rights. However, it’s not the only family fun to be had. A bulldozer was used during a burglary at a Taylors Hill supermarket on Sunday, September 22. It’s believed offenders drove a bulldozer through the doors of a supermarket on Gourlay Road about 4.50am. They gained entry to the business, however fled the scene empty-handed in a white utility. First look at new leisure centre By Laura Michell

Brimbank residents have been given their first look at the new health and wellbeing hub that will replace the St Albans Leisure Centre, with designs for the project unveiled by the council. The hub is tipped to cost more than $60 million, with the leisure centre scheduled to close in April 2020. Construction of the hub is expected to begin in June 2020. Schematic designs for the project were recently released by the council, revealing a modern facility complete with two water slides, a 50-metre pool, a splash pad for the kids and a state-of-the-art gym. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said the schematic designs were part of the early design phase. “From the outside, the building’s appearance and shape has taken inspiration from the iconic and strong form of the Organ Pipes rock formations which can be found in Brimbank. The hub will also include a leisure and learn-to-swim pool, a warm water pool with adjoining spas, dry and steam saunas, group fitness rooms, a wellness centre and a community program room. “The aquatic and leisure facilities, alongside a range of preventative health, education and social services to be delivered by co-located tenants under the same roof is what will set this hub apart from others,” Cr Congreve said.

Pupils at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception School recently stepped back in time to celebrate a special occasion. The Sunshine school officially is 100 later this month and principal Patrizia Bertani said it was a great time to reflect. “We want the children to really get a sense of our history and to get an idea about the types of education, songs, games and dances that previous eras participated in,” she said. The children studied the history in the lead-up to a celebration last week and have created a musical around the school’s history. The performance will be held later in the year. The school will also have an official commemoration. Ms Bertani said a big turnout is expected. “On October 17 we’ll be having past principals, nuns, priests, students and the general public come back for the official celebration. “We’d warmly invite anyone who has any affiliation with the school to come down to Our Ladies Church an 11.15am and afterwards the school will be open.” She said the key to the school’s longevity was its people. “Everyone who has worked here or passed through here has left a really rich history.”. Kerbside recycling back on track By Tate Papworth and Laura Michell Recycling collections have resumed in Brimbank. The council struck a deal with SKM receivers, KordaMentha to have Brimbank’s recycling sent to SKM’s Laverton North processing facility from today. A massive 2314 tonnes of recyclable material from across Brimbank was dumped in landfill for more than eight weeks, after SKM Recycling announced on July 25 that it would

cease accepting collections. The council was left $185,000 out of pocket as a result of the closure and has submitted an application to the state government’s funding assistance package to reclaim the additional costs. SKM was wound up by the Supreme Court on August 2. The decision left 33 councils across Melbourne without access to a recycling facility. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council had been working since July to get the

municipality’s recycling back on track. “We expect this interim agreement to remain in place until such time as a new owner takes over the recycling facility, at which point council will need to negotiate another contract,” she said. “We know this has been a frustrating and disappointing time for our community, and we thank residents for the understanding and patience they have demonstrated over the last couple of months. “I would like to acknowledge the many community members who have made every

effort to reduce the amount of waste and recycling they’ve been producing.” She said the interim agreement is a step forward. “The interim agreement we have signed with receivers, KordaMentha, means our community’s recycling is once again being sent to a dedicated recycling processing facility,” she said. “We have assurance that material delivered to the Laverton North recycling facility will be processed on the same day to avoid any build-up of recycling materials.”

Fabric is a real corker A pair of unique dresses, made of fabric which comes from tree bark, will be on show at this year’s Fashion Awards Australia. Fashion designers Minh Nguyen and William Thi, who live in St Albans, made the garments in just two days. The material used is called cork fabric, which is made from the bark of the cork oak tree. Mr Nguyen and Mr Thi both took part in last year’s awards. They said awards director Heather Marcus asked them to create the dresses this year in order to show the versatility of cork fabric, which was supplied by awards sponsor Birch Creative. “I think for me, because of the leopard print, I wanted to do something tribal,” Mr Nguyen said. Mr Thi said: “For me, personally I love working with unconventional fabrics.” Both men, who have their own individual fashion labels – MINDUC and William Thi – said they would also be entering other garments

in this year’s fashion awards. “I placed third in racewear last year, so I’m itching to see if I can improve this year,” Mr Thi said. “I’m graduating this year and I definitely pushed my limits and created some really great gowns, and I’m looking forward to celebrating on the night with my friends who will be there,” Mr Nguyen said. The charges relate to the deposit of industrial waste, including asbestos, at premises located at 93B Furlong Road Cairnlea, and the failure to secure and cover industrial waste at premises located at 154-160 Leicester Street Carlton.

Piper a little treasure To see little Piper walking around now you would never know the challenges she faced during her first weeks of life. Andrina Anderson was 30 weeks pregnant in January 2018 when she felt the baby’s movement diminish, and decided with her husband Gary that it would be best to get it checked out. Within hours of arriving at Sunshine Hospital she had given birth to Piper via cesarean. “They found that Piper’s heart rate was going super high and then super low so said it was better to have her out than in,” Andrina said. “They later said if they’d waited just a few more hours she may have died. “Later that day she was transferred to Heidelberg Mercy Hospital for more tests and

monitoring, which is where she was for about 42 days.” Andrina said having a premature birth had its challenges for their family. “I was stuck at Sunshine for a few days while Piper was in Heidelberg, so I felt a bit like a mother cat who’s kittens had been taken away.” Andrina and Gary are taking part in the Walk For Prems on October 27, the annual fundraiser for the Life’s Little Treasures Foundation, which is dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. New association is all business By Tate Papworth Five small business owners have banded together to create a place for businesses and budding entrepreneurs. The Brimbank Business Association will open its doors with an official launch on Thursday, October 24. President Daniel Dalli said the idea is to strengthen the local economy and attract new business and investment. “We intend to hold monthly or bimonthly

networking events. The idea will be for business owners to get together, exchange details, and work out how to work together and support each other,” he said. “We’ve seen how much investment is happening in the area, and will continue over the coming years, and we thought there was a gap in the market for a business association that includes all businesses in the area.” Up-skilling business owners is also a major part of the plan. “We intend to hold seminars and talks regularly, so there’ll be plenty of

opportunities to hear from experts. “We’ll look to work alongside the council, other organisations and business associations to see exactly where we fit in the community.” Brimbank already has two large business associations in Sunshine and St Albans, but Mr Dalli said there was room for another player. “We don’t see ourselves as competing with those associations, we see ourselves working alongside them and even taking on aspects they do well. “We wanted to extend an association to all

of Brimbank, which includes the likes of Deer Park, Keilor and Albion.” The official opening of the Brimbank Business Association will be held at the Sunshine Social, 64 Glengala Road from 6-7.30 pm. “Come along to the opening or to one of our meetings, it’s free to register and we want to grow the community. Kangaroos’ call to arms Sunshine Football Club supporters will be encouraged to shop local as part of a new partnership between the club and local businesses. The Golden Kangaroo Partnership program aims to promote businesses from Sunshine, North Sunshine, Braybrook, Albion and Maidstone to the football club’s supporters. Sunshine Football Club president Xavier Hayes said the program was designed to encourage the club’s members to support, back and build local businesses. “Sunshine Football Club’s reach is significant and extends beyond its players, coaches, administrators and volunteers,” he said. “The Sunshine local business community is scattered with many small and medium businesses such as take-away stores, family grocers, hairdressers … who rarely get the opportunity to have access to such a large buying group without forking out considerable amounts of money on sponsorship.”

Businesses can join the program for 12 months for a small fee each week and will be given a golden kangaroo sticker to display. After the initial 12 months, businesses will have the option of rejoining the program. Program partners will be promoted on the club’s Facebook page and website and will feature in its monthly newsletter and on the electronic scoreboard. “The program is offering a unique opportunity for the local business and club members to build a long-standing relationship that will be mutually beneficial to both organisations,” Mr Hayes said. More than 70 jobseekers were last week given the chance to meet with prospective employers at the region’s first ever Connecting Futures job fair. The hopeful candidates met with more than a dozen employers at the Salvation Army’s Employment Plus office in Sunshine. The concept was to connect jobseekers with local businesses in need of more hands. Employers were also given the opportunity to showcase their places of work through brief presentations, before mingling with the candidates. The Salvation Army Employment Plus program manager for youth services, Ree Paduano said it was a great opportunity for younger people to find work.

Sunshine Council’s health department will no longer be required to give smallpox vaccinations to children within the municipality. That direction is now official because it comes from Dr. Graham Rouch, Victoria’s assistant director of public health. Dr. Rouch told The Advocate that his department discouraged smallpox vaccinations because of the risk of “nasty side effects”.

The western suburbs will soon have their own community radio station operating from Brooklyn and transmitting to Keilor, Essendon, Sunshine, Footscray, Williamstown and Altona.

Residents are crying foul over what they believe is a planning bungle. And now Brimbank council has launched an internal investigation into its planning processes following claims a permit granted for a Keilor property breached the council’s own guidelines.

Last minute changes to a trip back home saved 34 of Brimbank’s Samoan youths from the Pacific tsunami. Financial difficulties stopped the group from proceeding with year-long plans to start a farm project with its sister group in a village destroyed by the killer wave.

MY BRIMBANK Andrew Wilson has been part of Sunshine Community Brass for 14 years and loves being involved in local events and community groups. He speaks with Laura Michell. My connection to Brimbank is through Sunshine Community Brass band. What do you like about where you live? I’m close to the local shopping centre and local schools. What, if anything, would you like to change? At this stage there isn’t anything that I would change. How long have you been involved with the Sunshine Community Brass band, and how did you first become involved? I’ve been a permanent member of the band for the past 14 years. I first got involved with Sunshine Community Brass because my now wife was playing tenor horn in the band and they needed a soprano cornet player for the National Brass Band Championships being held in Launceston, Tasmania in 2004. I was travelling over from Mt Gambier, South Australia every few weeks for rehearsals. By the end of that year I had moved to Melbourne for work and the following year married the good looking tenor horn player. How important is it to have a community band in Brimbank? Music is important in every area of life. While the dynamics of the community have changed over the 90 years the band has been in

existence, I feel that a band is an important part of Sunshine’s, and in turn Brimbank’s, history. The band will only continue while we have people supporting us and coming to play with the band. We are always looking for people to join the band. Lots of students will quit music once they leave high school, which is a shame. It would be good to see these students join the band and continue their playing. What do you enjoy most about being part of the Sunshine Community Brass band? Being part of a group of like-minded people who all want to achieve the same goals helps create a community within a community. The band’s involvement in Brimbank with the Sunshine RSL, Brimbank council and Deer Park Lions Club, just to name a few, helps give the events we help them with a sense of occasion. A parade without a band in it is a bit boring. We help bring it to life. There is also the competing side of the band that I love. Banding is a bit like playing any team sport. On the contest stage it gets competitive and also helps in helping every player get better individually. We have to play as a team in order to achieve the results we are looking for. Where is your favourite local place to spend time? I love spending time at our band hall on Furlong Road. It gives me a feeling of pride and achievement being there. I also like to spend time in the local shopping strips. I like to support the local traders as much as I can.

Will Kennedy only spent a short time with the Western Jets, but he sure made an impact. In his only season in the blue and gold, Kennedy etched his name in the clubâ€™s record books, taking out the Barry Round Medal for best-and-fairest in an impressive 2019 NAB League campaign. Kennedy felt like he would be around the mark when it came to the awarding of the clubâ€™s highest honour, but did not arrive at the count with confidence because of the high quality individuals on the Jetsâ€™ list. â€œ[Lucas] Rocci winning the Morrish Medal [the leagueâ€™s best-and-fairest], I sort of thought he would take it out,â€? Kennedy said. â€œWe did have a few boys, like Archi Manton and Daly Andrews, who I thought were a chance. â€œI thought Iâ€™d be in the conversation, but I was pretty surprised when I actually won it. â€œItâ€™s a big honour. â€œIâ€™ve really loved my year with the Jets.â€? Kennedy was contacted by the Western Jets in the off season to consider joining the club. The ruckman had spent the previous two seasons with Sandringham Dragons with his second year marred by inconsistent form and injuries. Instead of signing with a VFL club and potentially spending the whole season at local football level, Kennedy saw the move to the Jets as a fantastic opportunity to remain in an elite environment and show the recruiters what he could achieve at his full potential. â€œObviously going to VFL, if Iâ€™m not getting a game, Iâ€™d have to go and play local football, and that might not have been the best for me at the time,â€? Kennedy said. â€œI got called up by Sandringham [VFL side] at

the start of the year and I thought itâ€™s probably going to be hard to crack into that team. â€œPlaying in the NAB League again gave me consistent footy, which is what I wanted to do. â€œI didnâ€™t really play that consistently last year and I had a few injuries, so I knew with a good run of games, Iâ€™d be able to build some form.â€? Kennedy was the anchor of a Western Jets side that featured in the finals this season. His influence in the ruck and around the ground was profound. He was one of the most consistent players in the team. â€œI only polled the most votes out of the round once, but I sort of polled in most of the games,â€? Kennedy said. â€œConsistency got me the medal in the end.â€? Kennedy grew from the experience of playing with the Western Jets. Having played all of his elite football with Sandringham Dragons, it was a chance to venture into unchartered waters. â€œI thought this is going to help me get out of my comfort zone, get over the West Gate Bridge and meet a whole new group of people and grow myself and mature a bit,â€? Kennedy said. â€œI wasnâ€™t really sure what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise and I loved it there.â€? As one of the most experienced players in the squad, Kennedy was a driving force for his teammates. â€œI tried to lead by example,â€? he said. Kennedy got his chance to play two VFL games as the 23rd player with Frankston. He featured in games against Box Hill Hawks and Collingwood, the AFL team he supports. â€œThat exposure to the bigger bodies allowed me to go back and play better because I was used to it.â€? He thanked his parents Bruce and Phillipa for their unwavering support over the years.

SPORT Albion Rovers come from nowhere to take the title There was more to the title-winning Albion Rovers women’s team than met the eye. The Rovers can boast about their status as the women’s state league 5 champions, but the journey to get there was just as impressive. If you go back to the first day of the year, the team did not even exist. The Rovers have struggled for years to get a senior women’s team up and running, but decided to think outside the square. The club put in a call to a local organisation Football Empowerment, a not-for-profit organisation that uses its soccer program to empower youth of the west. “It’s a community group that has an ambition to give everyone a platform to engage in the community,” Rovers coach Engano Singehebhuye said. “We have various activities that we run and football is just one of them. “We use football as the base to target young

people to participate in the community, whether it be in education, job seeking opportunities and so on.” The members of Football Empowerment overwhelmingly share one interest – soccer. Most of the players had never been part of an organised team though. That all changed when the Rovers got in touch in the off season. “The girls love football,” Singehebhuye said. “Albion Rovers were struggling for years to get some girls to play for them, especially at senior level, so in early January they called me because they heard we run some programs with the women that are football-related and they asked if the women would like to participate more in a season-wise [competition]. “I said I’d pose the question to them and it didn’t take too long because the girls wanted to participate.” Not only did Albion have a team to field, they had a competitive team. All the skills the players had learnt through

the Football Empowerment program translated into a club environment. “After a couple of weeks of good training, they got up to speed very quickly,” Singehebhuye said. “In the friendlies, we were beating teams by 10 goals.” Albion went on to win the women’s state league 5 north-west title in its first season. The Rovers finished with 40 points, one point clear of second-placed Kensington City and Keon Park. After securing promotion and the north-west title, Albion went on to play in the final of women’s state league 5 and won a classic 4-3 over Springvale White Eagles. “It was a very tough match,” Singehubhuye said. “We were biting our nails at the end.” It was only fitting that Anab Ahmed scored a double in the final. Ahmed was Albion’s leading goalscorer with 25 goals for the season. Lance Jenkinson

Eagles’ planning pain By Lance Jenkinson Sunshine acted swiftly to find a new import on the eve of the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 season after Jared Van Hoon pulled the pin due to changing circumstances. The Eagles were excited to get Van Hoon back into the flock after a successful first stint with the club, but he got an offer too good to refuse to coach at college level in the US and decided to stay. Eagles coach Stuart Clayton said Van Hoon’s loss was a blow for his planning, but a quick resolution was found with the capture of catcher Bryce Aldridge. “He [Van Hoon] rang me up and had to pull the pin after he got offered a job over in the States coaching at a college,” Clayton said. “It was a thing where if he didn’t take the job this year, he might not have got another opportunity. “He said he’s 30 years-old now and as much as he liked playing baseball, he’s got to look at his future.” Clayton understood why Van Hoon made the decision and was released with his blessing. Van Hoon’s strong relationship with Sunshine will open the door for a return in the future. “I would’ve loved to have had him here, but I understand he’s got his future to look at,” Clayton said. “He’s got to look at his future and what he’s going to do coaching-wise for the next five or six years rather than playing one year in Australia.” What softened the blow was the capture of a new import. Sunshine baseball director Marc McKenner worked quickly to secure Aldridge, who is primarily a catcher, but can play first base and outfield. The early signs are that Aldridge will be a more than capable replacement for Van Hoon. “He played division 1 college baseball two years ago,” Clayton said. “He’s been out here for three weeks now and he’s working with the pitchers. “He’s getting on really well with them all and fits in around the club.” Expect Aldridge to be a little bit rusty in the first month of the season because he was coaching rather than playing in the past 12 months. To his credit, the 23-year-old right handed hitter has been doing extras at training to get himself up to full fitness. “He’s had a year coaching in college and now he’s jumped back into playing,” Clayton said. “The three weeks that he’s been here are the first three weeks he’s done any actual baseball 40 BRIMBANK & NORTH WEST STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 1, 2019

Cavaliers take junior title Green Gully has secured the Football Victoria 15/16A girls state title. The Cavaliers are rebuilding their female football program and the elite teenagers are a key part of the growth expected in the coming seasons. All it took was a single goal for Green Gully to clinch a 1-0 win over Fawkner in the grand final. At half-time, scores were locked at nil-all. That was considered a win for Green Gully, considering they were running into a strong breeze in the first half. While the first 45 minutes was full of grit and determination from the Cavaliers, the second half they looked to find a winner. The goal would eventually come with nine minutes left in the match through Tamila Iluffi. Illufi pounced on the ball inside the box and tucked it home to spark huge noise from the Green Gully spectators. The dying minutes were tense, but Green Gully held on to become state champions. Sunshine has softball for all

for 12 months. “I get here at the club early to set up the diamond and he’s down here doing extra running to get himself fit.” Aldridge has already shown strong leadership qualities in his short time with Sunshine. He is working with the juniors and the women’s team and is a positive influence among the senior team. “He’s a good leader,” Clayton said. “He knows the game because he’s coached himself.”

Sunshine’s pitching took a hit with do-it-all Van Hoon opting out. The Eagles are currently in discussions with a top shelf pitcher to add to their rotation. In the meantime, Sunshine will be served well by Jeremy Young, the league MVP last season, Adam Irons and Griffin Weir. Young will be the ace for Sunshine. After finishing on top last season, Sunshine is keen to hit the repeat button, but this time go one better in the playoffs and take out the title.

Sunshine Softball Association, based at More Park in Ardeer, will have all bases covered this summer. The SSA will have teams at all under age levels, along with mixed grades and open age teams for men’s and women’s competitions on Saturdays. The association has introduced two fun new formats, Softball Batter Up for under 12s and Fully Loaded for mixed under 16s and open women’s, which will run on Monday nights. A host of SSA players are involved with Victorian state teams and School Sports Victoria teams.
