St Albans Primary School staff and students had 130 reasons to celebrate last week. On Friday the school marked its 130th birthday and principal Joanne Richmond said it holds a special place in the community. “This is the original school in St Albans, the original site was in Alfrieda Street. “It was like a farm, a wooden building. This was all farmland and there were enough children here for a school, so that’s why the school was built,” she said. Ms Richmond said the school has continued to evolve with the suburb. “We’ve got a great history and today the school is very multicultural and really reflects St Albans’ diversity. “We’ve continued to grow and today we’ve got over 300 enrolments.” A number of activities were planned for the special day. “Over in the hall we’re superimposing photos of the current students in front of the original building, which is really cool seeing the present and past come together. “We’ve also got outdoor activities, lots of old photos and memorabilia on display, it’s just a great opportunity to celebrate.” YEAR 6 STUDENTS LIZETTE AND SALLY

Funding down the drain By Tate Papworth Brimbank council has warned $11 million could be down the drain if further funding isn’t provided for the Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project. Work on the project, which was to transform a concrete drain back to a natural wetland, has hit a standstill after costs blew out due to asbestos contamination. The project was funded by all three levels of government. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was imperative both the state

and federal governments pledged to finish the project. “The $11 million that was promised to this project is now at risk of disappearing down the drain – we can’t let this happen,” she said. “The project site is adjacent to hundreds of homes, a local school and sporting club. The

site in its current state is unacceptable to the community, and it should be unacceptable to the Victorian and federal governments.” The council has held meetings with various state and federal ministers trying to secure an additional $8 million in funding, Star Weekly understands a decision could be made this week. “We understand both levels of government are currently considering our correspondence, advocacy and representations and we look forward to hearing back soon,” Cr Congreve said.

Earlier this month Western Metropolitan Labor MP Cesar Melhem said the project was important and would be completed. “I’m confident the project will be continued … it needs to be done,” he said. The council insists time is of the essence for the project and is hoping for a quick resolution. It has set up an online petition for the community to get behind the project, but Cr Congreve said more names are needed. Rate rises a sore point in Keilor By Tate Papworth Several Keilor residents are furious that they could face increases of up to 15 per cent on their council rates. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesperson Susan Jennison said the association had been contacted by a number of concerned residents who say they have received letters from the council informing them of potential increases. “People are up in arms over it – it flies in the face of recent property valuations and council

policy,” Ms Jennison said. “We’ve had at least five people contact us about it.” Brimbank council said earlier this year, as part of its budget process, about 72 per cent of residents would receive a rate decrease. Ms Jennison questioned how Keilor residents could be hit with the maximum increase

given that pledge and the state of the property market. Brad Teal Real Estate sales manager and auctioneer Craig Teal said there was little doubt the market had dipped in the past 12 months. “It’s been going backwards, definitely,” he said. “It’s dipped for sure. “Having said that, Keilor’s a bit more protected than other suburbs … Keilor certainly doesn’t have those heavy falls.” Brimbank council chief strategist financial and organisational excellence Shane Marr said rate increases were based on property value.

“The vast majority of residential ratepayers – 72 per cent – will receive a reduction in their rates for 2019-2020 financial year,” he said. “A small proportion of properties in Brimbank have experienced an increase in property valuations. If your rates have increased by more than the rate cap of 2.50 per cent, this is because your property value has increased relative to other properties in Brimbank. “From 2018-2019, all properties are revalued by the Valuer-General at the start of each calendar year. This is a requirement across all councils.”

A number of Brimbank train stations are set for upgrades as the state government prepares the Sunbury line for new high-capacity trains due to hit the track when the Metro Tunnel is complete. The $215 million project will deliver platform extensions at every station between Sunbury and Footscray, wheelchair boarding platforms at eight stations, traction power upgrades and improvements to train stabling at Sunbury, Calder Park and Watergardens. Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said Sunbury line commuters will be among the biggest beneficiaries from the Metro Tunnel project. “The contract has been awarded and work will start within weeks. We’re not wasting a moment delivering these vital upgrades, which will pave the way for new, high-capacity trains on the Sunbury line,” she said. “Sunbury passengers will be some of the biggest beneficiaries of the Metro Tunnel and new high-capacity trains – and this project is a critical part of delivering those benefits.” The high-capacity trains will be 20 per cent bigger than the trains currently running on the network. The government says the bigger trains and the Metro Tunnel will allow for an additional 113,000 peak hour passengers on the Sunbury line each week and slash commute times by up to 40 minutes a day. Site investigations for the platform extensions and stabling upgrades will start later this month, with major works to begin by the end of the year.

Making sense of parking in St Albans and Sunshine town centres Council recently introduced parking sensors in some of the on-street parking bays along Devonshire Road, Sunshine and Alfrieda Street, St Albans.

Parking sensors are an efficient way for Council to manage parking in busy areas and to ensure parking is available for everyone.

The 100 sensors will help with turnover of parking spaces and make it easier for drivers to find public parking spaces in areas of high demand. This will allow more visitors, customers and residents to flow through these busy areas, which will benefit local business.

The sensors will also help Council by not having to rely so heavily on manual chalking of car tyres to monitor use of timed parking spaces.

Lady of the sea says farewell By Tate Papworth An 81-year-old Russian sea captain living in Sunshine is putting some of her prized momentos up for sale. Victoria Ostrovskaya arrived in Australia in 1992 in a bid to become the first Russian woman to solo circumnavigate the world. She began her trip in Melbourne in 1995, but almost immediately had to return to port after her yacht’s propeller was damaged. Australian businessman Dick Smith sponsored the repair of the yacht and in January, 1996, she made a second attempt, however bad luck appeared to be following her.

She made it only to Geelong when a motor problem was discovered. Months later she made her third attempt. “I was in a great hurry because my visa was about to expire and I was under pressure to leave the country,” she said. “I knew there was a great storm coming and better judgment would be to wait for it to pass, then follow it, but I was under time pressure.” Captain Ostrovskaya made it to Bass Straight before disaster struck. “There was a cyclone, the boat got hit by a massive wave and ended up rolling 360 degrees. “I didn’t want to give up, so I spent seven days and seven nights in the boat with four broken ribs trying to make sure it wouldn’t sink. “There is not time to think about death. You need to act. I prayed to St Nicholas, the saint patron of sailors to help me in the hopeless

Cyber security jobs plan By Laura Michell A cyber security training centre has opened in St Albans in a bid to tackle shortages in Australia’s cyber security workforce. The centre, funded by Victoria University and cyber security vendor Cisco, is based at the university’s St Albans campus. According to VU, the cyber security industry will need an extra 18,000 workers by 2026. It said lack of trained staff had the potential to cost the country hundreds of millions of dollars.

Victoria University deputy vice-chancellor Grant Dreher said the centre would help address the demand for trained professionals and provide more career paths for people living in the western suburbs. “We are enormously proud to partner with Cisco to help address a workforce shortage in an industry with a vast future demand for trained professionals,” he said. “The rapid evolution of cyber crimes around the world shows that cyber security is not just an Australian problem – it’s a global problem for companies to tackle, using a high-quality workforce with the right skills and training.” The centre features a cyber security operations centre with a simulated working environment, allowing students to take on real-time roles as data hackers or cyber-savvy protectors. There are also two immersive computer labs and a video-conferencing classroom.

Cisco Australia and New Zealand vice-president Ken Boal said the centre would help support Australia’s digital transformation. “We are excited by the prospects of the cyber security training centre to support the skills of the emerging workforce, help create

jobs and enhance Australia’s global economic competitiveness,” he said. “Partnering with academia to accelerate growth in the cyber security industry will create more opportunities for Australia to grow and prosper in the digital era.”

Reserve kicks on for sport Two new female-friendly changerooms at Keilor Park Reserve have been opened, paving the way for women to join in myriad sports. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the new facilities will have health and wellbeing benefits for all of the community. “The upgrades will accommodate women, men and juniors – a game-changer for year-round sport at the reserve,” Cr Congreve said. “These improvements will go a long way in creating clean, safe and accessible facilities to support the growing levels of female sport participation in our community. “Keilor Park Reserve is a key sporting precinct in Brimbank and these improvements are an important part of ensuring people of all ages, abilities and gender have every opportunity to access and participate in sport.” The new facilities will cater for a variety of sports and were jointly funded. The completion of the $680,722 football and cricket facility changerooms were funded by the council, with Sport and Recreation Victoria contributing $250,000, and AFL Victoria $33,000 towards the upgrades. The council also tipped in $347,336 towards softball changerooms and social amenity upgrades, with Sport and Recreation Victoria also contributing $100,000. Tate Papworth

A truck driver is facing more than 40 charges following the alleged theft of more than $9000 of diesel from service stations across Melbourne. The Deer Park man was arrested on August 12 after police stopped a prime mover in Laverton North about 11am. The prime mover was impounded for 30 days. The man, aged in his 20s, was charged with offences including theft and possessing a drug of dependence.

Residents rally to fight runway By Tate Papworth Concerned community members have joined forces in a bid to stop a proposed north-south runway at Melbourne Airport from getting off the ground. The Melbourne Airport Community Action Group was formed after the airport announced it would review the alignment for its long-planned third runway. The airport had initially planned for an east-west alignment, however it says recent data revealed a north-south option may be better. A north-south runway would mean

additional aircraft traffic over Brimbank suburbs, including Keilor. Group spokesperson Hannah Robertson said after some research it became clear the community needed a voice. “I quickly realised the devastating impact a north-south runway would have on the community, not just Keilor, but for a large portion of Brimbank,” she said. “There are significant noise concerns – for example there are seven schools which will be under noise contours – those schools wouldn’t be able to be built under those conditions if they didn’t already exist.

“Aircraft noise significantly impacts children’s learning and cognitive development … And that’s not even mentioning the traffic and infrastructure congestion.” The group is partnering with the Hume Residents Airport Action Group and Keilor Residents and Ratepayers Association. “I’m a reasonably informed person and it shocked me how little I knew,” Ms Robertson said. “I can’t help but wonder if I knew nothing, then how much does the wider community know? We’ve created a Facebook group where people can post evidence-based articles and information.”

The group also hopes to spread the word through other means. “We’re hoping to do a leaflet drop to over 33,000 homes in Brimbank. Obviously costs associated with printing are high, so we’re hoping once word spreads a few more people will donate. “We’re also looking to do a community forum, which will feature independent experts. I’m not doubting the airport, but I think people want to hear from independent sources.” The group is yet to set a date for the forum. Details: www.facebook.com/groups/653555 668496216/

Hear, hear to tradies Brimbank tradies are being urged to have their hearing checked as part of national tradies health month. A Keilor Downs audiologist is warning that tradies should have their hearing checked every two years, given their frequent exposure to loud noises from machinery and power tools. Specsavers audiologist Manan Jassal said noise hazards on the job mean that tradies are often damaging their hearing without even knowing it. She said hearing loss was of particular concern to retired tradies. “It’s all too often that retired tradies present to me with compromised hearing as a result of prolonged work in noisy environments without hearing protection,” she said. “As well as having your hearing checked routinely every two years, there are a number of preventative measures tradies can take to

protect their hearing, especially as the majority of workplace hearing loss is preventable with the right safety measures and precautions.” Ms Jassal said tradies should ensure they wear earplugs or ear muffs, and reduce the number of different noises they are exposed to at any one time to prevent hearing loss. Brimbank council has welcomed state government plans to help ease the financial impact of SKM Recycling’s insolvency on councils. The government will provide a $6.6 million package to the 33 affected councils over the next four months, providing them with a rebate to cover the costs they are incurring to deal with recyclable waste. However, the councils will need to demonstrate that alternative options to sending kerbside recycling collections to landfill are being sought and that as much material as possible is being recycled. They will also need to agree to be fully transparent about future waste contracts and to work with the government on a ban on exporting recyclable waste. Kerbside recycling collections from Brimbank are still being sent to landfill while the council searches for a long-term solution to the recycling crisis. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council was keen to find out more about the relief package. “We welcome the announcement that some financial relief looks to be on the horizon … this should go some way towards helping offset some of the additional costs councils are facing as a result of having to divert the community’s recyclables away from SKM facilities,” she said. “We will be seeking further details from the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio about how Brimbank

can access this relief package, including the conditions attached.” Ms D’Ambrosio said the government wanted to work with councils and the industry on a “major overhaul” of kerbside collections to improve the quality of recyclables being collected by councils. She said this may include extra bins for households to improve the separation of waste. “This short-term financial relief supports councils immediately while all levels of government work together on a longer-term solution,” Ms D’Ambrosio said. Brimbank council has also welcomed the government’s commitment to working with SKM’s receiver to remove stockpiles of waste at SKM sites across Melbourne’s north west, including at Derriumut and Sunshine.

Kids urged to get into sport

For several years, Mr Gallus has been helping to develop the game in Pakistan – and now he’s taking that role one step further. “In 2014, through my Footy’s 4 All program, I was able to support the Pakistan men’s team at the International Cup here in Melbourne,” he said. “In 2017, a women’s team came out for the first time with 24 women from Pakistan and approached me to coach.

Priority applications for the Brimbank council’s IN2Sport initiative opened yesterday, offering children aged between six and 18 financial assistance to contribute to club membership fees at participating Brimbank sports clubs. The priority application period is for females, first-time applicants and people with a disability. Eligible participants are able to claim up to $200. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the program, now in its sixth year, had proven popular. “In2Sport has been running since 2013 and in that time has supported more than 1500 young people to get active and involved in local sport,” she said. “Participating in local sport not only benefits your health and wellbeing, but it helps create community connections as well. “I encourage all families out there with kids who have been thinking about joining a local sports club – and who meet the In2Sport criteria – to apply.” Those claiming must live in Brimbank and have their name listed on a health care card or pension concession card. MY BRIMBANK Taylors Lakes artist Belinda Aikas is in the midst of her first local and solo exhibition at the St Albans Community Centre. She speaks with Laura Michell. How long have you lived in Taylors Lakes and what brought you to the area? For about five years. We were renting and liked the area and its proximity to the city and the freeway, while also being a little removed from the mayhem. What do you like about where you live? We like that it’s just a good location. A 10-minute drive down the road and you are in the country. There are nice cafes and shopping. Tell us about your exhibition … It’s called Inner Bloom and it is a body of work exploring my passion for the ocean and beach. I have spent my summer holidays along the Great Ocean Road since I was a child. The exhibition features large scale wave and ocean paintings. The works depict the briefest of fleeting moments in the ebb and flow of the ocean’s great natural movement.

How long have you been selling and exhibiting your art? My entire life I have been a painter. I am an interior designer and decorator by trade. While I am taking a break from work, I have been developing my painting skills. Have you had a local exhibition before? No, I’ve never had a local exhibition. This is my first solo art show. accepted to exhibit at the St Albans Community Centre and Bowery Theatre. Where is your favourite local place to spend time?

Inner Bloom is at the St Albans Community Centre and Bowery Theatre until September 1. The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm and from 9am-noon on Saturdays.

My son and I love bike riding. We love exploring around the area and have found lots of different creeks and native bushland areas. We like to explore parts of the area that emphasise the Aboriginal heritage of the area.

Don’t let $11 Million go down the drain Sign the Stony Creek Petition Brimbank Council is continuing its fight to save Stony Creek in Sunshine North – and we need your help. Works on the $11 million Upper Stony Creek Transformation Current Project, on Melbourne Water land, began in April 2018 and brought together all levels of government, alongside private enterprise.

The project aimed to rehabilitate a 1.2 kilometre section of Stony Creek from a concrete drain back to a green, lush natural wetland, but works are now at a standstill after costs blew out due to asbestos contamination. The $11 million that was promised to this project is now at risk of disappearing down the drain. We can’t let this happen. Council is calling on the Federal and Victorian governments to show leadership to save the project. The completion of the Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project would create a natural cool zone for the community to enjoy, and would give the community access to a world class environmental and biodiversity corridor. New e-waste disposal methods At Call Hard Waste Collection Service

Book your hard waste and we’ll pick it up We’ve introduced new and easy ways to dispose of your electronic waste (e-waste) at several new drop-off points in Keilor, Sydenham, Sunshine, Deer Park and St Albans, all at no charge.

Why the change?

The launch of the new disposal points follows the Victorian Government’s state-wide ban on e-waste being sent to landfill from 1 July 2019. E-waste cannot be discarded with your regular garbage collection as it contains hazardous material, and can be harmful to the environment and human health. It must be disposed of at one of the designated drop-off points.

What is e-waste?

If it has a plug, battery or cord and is unwanted, it’s e-waste. This includes everything from old mobile phones, computers, monitors, printers, televisions, CD players, refrigerators, heaters, toasters and other white goods. Remember, large e-waste items such as whitegoods like fridges and washing machines can be recycled through Council’s At Call Hard Waste Collection Service.

The service allows residential properties in Brimbank to book one no charge hard waste collection service each financial year – at a time that suits you. It replaces the city-wide blanket hard waste collection previously provided. The benefit of this new service is that you can choose when you want us to collect your hard waste. You have 12 months (1 July to 30 June) to make your booking.

Capital Works Female friendly change rooms opened Council is continuing to invest heavily in upgrading female friendly change rooms across Brimbank. In Brimbank, we have long recognised the power of sport in engaging the community and supporting girls and women to play sport. We know improvements to sport facilities have a real impact on participation and levels of physical activity – supporting everyone in our community to live healthy and active lives. Female friendly change room upgrades deliver great news for the future of local sports and female sports participation.

Recent upgrades

We recently completed two significant female friendly change room upgrades at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve to accommodate more girls and women playing sport. The completion of the $680,000 football and cricket facility change room upgrades include two female friendly change rooms, umpires rooms, first aid room and social toilets. This project received $250,000 funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria and a further $33,000 contributed by AFL Victoria.

Recent improvements

• Green Gully Reserve, Keilor Downs – the playground upgrade costing $800,000 includes a landmark tower with two slides, swing set, balancing and climbing posts, nature play areas, picnic area, native bird sculptures, fitness station, new toilets, canopy trees and low cover garden beds. A full basketball court/half netball court is coming in the next month.

The additional $350,000 softball facility upgrade includes adding two change rooms, umpires room and unisex toilets to provide accessible spaces for players and spectators. This project received $100,000 funding from Sport and Recreation Victoria. A female friendly change room upgrade at John McLeod Reserve in Deer Park, included two change rooms and two umpires rooms completed in June at a cost of $395,000. A $397,000 project at Lionheart Reserve in Taylors Lakes has also seen two change rooms reconfigured and upgraded to accommodate more female players.

Works underway

Works are also underway at Keilor Recreation Reserve to convert one large open space into two new female friendly change rooms with amenities to provide accessible and unisex spaces for all. The $330,000 project is due for completion later this month. Keilor Lodge Reserve in Taylors Lakes is undergoing upgrades to four female-friendly change rooms that will provide accessible spaces for everyone. The $500,000 project is expected to be completed in October 2019.

• West Esplanade, St Albans – the $100,000 pedestrian improvements include a shared user path extension from the northern end of the rail parking area to opposite St Albans Primary School (Ruth Street pedestrian overpass). • Kororoit Creek Shared User Path, Albion – the $150,000 upgrade provides a safer and easier shared user path for cyclists and pedestrians, following Kororoit Creek. • Overnewton Gatehouse Hall, Keilor – the $120,000 car park upgrade includes new concrete pavement footpath works and new drainage.

• Delahey Skate Space, Delahey – the $300,000 skate space is now open at Delahey Recreation Reserve. Further improvements will take place this year including tree planting, concrete seating and path access at the reserve. • Davitt Drive Park, Deer Park – the community of Deer Park now have full use of a new playground with picnic shelter, BBQ and drinking fountain. A new playground to the value of $450,000 has been installed, with better access to the Kororoit Creek shared use walking and cycling trail, and more space for picnics.

Works underway

• Hampshire Road, Sunshine – the $1.6 million project will include a new signalised intersection at Foundry Road, and separated bicycle lanes from Ballarat Road to join the existing bike lane on Service Street.

J.R. Parsons Reserve in Sunshine will soon have an additional two female friendly modular change rooms installed onsite to cater for the use of two ovals and increased female participation. These will be installed this month at a cost of approximately $200,000. These upgrades will go a long way in creating clean, safe and accessible facilities to support the growing levels of sport participation in Brimbank. Brimbank Mayor, Cr Lucinda Congreve and The Hon. • Alexandra Avenue Children’s Centre, Sunshine – Two new kindergarten rooms with space to accommodate 66 children will be added at a cost of $1.49 million. The upgrades will include a new playground valued at $160,000. • Sportsground lighting projects – Seven soccer grounds will receive lighting upgrades to competition standard. The sites are Ainsworth Reserve, Sunshine; Ralph Reserve, Sunshine West; Ardeer Reserve, Ardeer; Larissa Reserve, St Albans; Keilor Lodge Reserve, Taylors Lakes; and Churchill Reserve, St Albans. The works are due to be completed in September 2019.

• Errington Reserve, St Albans – Council is constructing a $4.3 million sports and community pavilion and new tennis courts valued at about $1.9 million to replace the existing pavilion. Demolition of existing structures is complete, along with foundation works and in ground services. The new site will include three new synthetic grass courts and one multi-use hard court with LED lighting, to be located near the new sports and community pavilion.

• The Lakes Reserve, Taylors Lakes – will undergo a $3.34 million dollar transformation including new activities and leisure area, improved playground, better views and more space for picnics.

• Dempster Park Tennis, Sunshine North – upgrade works will include resurfacing tennis courts 1 and 2 with synthetic grass and extending the courts to provide a walkway between courts. • MB Lynch Memorial Gardens, Sunshine – community consultation is underway and construction is due to start in early 2020. Specifically, thereâ€™ll be no trucking with the half measures of ordering half a chicken. So we order a whole one ($34). This a Korean first for us, ordering a whole one that is. Itâ€™s ambitious, too, as we know that when Korean eateries say â€œwhole chickenâ€?, they invariably mean a whole lot of pieces that appear to amount to significantly more than a whole bird. But just because we order the big deal, doesnâ€™t mean weâ€™re wanting â€“ or are able â€“ to eat it all. We donâ€™t. So four pieces go home and will constitute, the next day, probably the best school lunch Bennie will ever have. The cool thing about this chicken â€“ we get half sweet chilli, half soy/garlic â€“ is that despite being quite wet with the sauces, all the pieces retain wonderful crunch. Did someone say Korean fried chicken is better than hipster joint fried chicken? Yes. We did. Incredibly, despite the poultry excellence, our fried chicken is marginally upstaged in the flavour department by our other dinner selection. From the chargrilled barbecue list we get spicy pork bulgogi ($22). The thin-sliced meat is of heavenly taste. It sits on crunchy cabbage and thereâ€™s enough

SPORT Keilor shakes off semi-final blues, nails decider berth Keilor has redeemed itself and earned an Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division grand final spot in the progress. After a disappointing semi-final against Aberfeldie, the Blues were switched on against Hillside on Saturday in their preliminary final. In a strong four-quarter performance, the Blues won 7.7 (49)-2.0 (12). Blues coach Ron Sikora said he was thrilled with how his players responded to the semi-final loss. “Intent is what we pride ourselves on and we did exactly that,” he said. “It was across the board and everyone played their role.” One of the most pleasing elements for Sikora was the way they finished off the game, displaying a killer instinct that has sometimes been lacking. “It’s an area of improvement,” he said. “We don’t keep the momentum going. We get comfortable when we’re winning … we have to keep on the pressure.”

Sikora said he was delighted with the good number of contributors across the four quarters. And it was some of the youngest players that impressed him the most. “We brought in four under-18s and their instincts around the footy set the standard,” he said. In the grand final, the Blues will face Aberfeldie – again. Sikora said they had worked to identify the key areas that would help them take it to the undefeated minor premiers. “We’ve identified the difference between our good and bad games,” he said. “We’re either proactive or reactive. If we’re proactive, we stand a good chance of winning.” Team selection will present challenges, with everyone bar those ruled out with long-term injuries available. The club will be hoping that Rachael Knight comes up this week after missing the game against the Sharks. The grand final will be the Blues’ third in three different competitions across the past

three years. They won the combined EDFL and Western Region premiership in 2017, before making the Northern Football League division 1 grand final last year. Sikora said a lot of work had been put in behind the scenes, but that it was important to remember this was a new group, compared to those of the past couple of years. “It’s a credit to the new girls at the club who are new to the game,” he said. “One girl [Marthese Zahra] is playing her first year of football and if you were to see her, you would say I would be lying. “It’s a happy environment and they feed off each other. “It’s a development process, though we’ve had some good success. Dispute shadows Lions By Lance Jenkinson The sanctuary of the playing field proved comforting for Deer Park at the end of a tough week for the Western Region Football League division 1 side. The Lions have come under scrutiny for their adherence to the Allowable Player Payments (APP) stemming from the 2018 season. The WRFL released a statement on Thursday, saying the Lions will have to answer charges for alleged breaches of the APP limit, providing false or misleading information and failing to disclose all payments. The club will have the opportunity to explain its side of the story and challenge all the charges before the Player Payments Disciplinary Committee. Any concerns over the APP information that was brought to life by the WRFL during the week had little impact on Deer Park’s on-field performance. The Lions were breathtaking in their 86-point dismantling of St Albans at Kings Park Reserve. Lions coach Marc Bullen said the players and coaches were well aware of the issue but had to get on with the task at hand. “It’s obviously an elephant in the room,” Bullen said. “All we can do is maintain our rage, continue to train well and to play well, and what will be will be. “We’ll let the club deal with what they need to deal with and we’ve got to make sure we continue to win games and prep for another finals series.” Deer Park was in control from start to finish in its massive win over St Albans. Bullen stopped short of saying it was the Lions’ best win of the year, but it was right up there. “Earlier in the year against Werribee Districts was definitely our best performance,” he said. “To win the way we did was outstanding and positive signs heading into a finals series.” Jack Redpath had a stand out game for Deer Park. The key forward kicked seven goals before he retreated to the bench with a shoulder injury in the third quarter and did not return. “He played a little bit closer to goal today and when we put it out in front of him, he’s pretty hard to stop,” Bullen said. Deer Park kicked 24 goals to produce a cricket score in a game when league-leading goalkicker Jase Perkins was unavailable. Some of the firepower was provided by Chris Stewart, who kicked five goals, and James Wong, who added four.

With Perkins set to return next week, Bullen has four more quarters of football to find the right dynamic in his forward line, which has been a season-long quandary. “We’ll just continue to put time into the guys and work out what the best structure and system is,” Bullen said. Bowls elite descend on Deer Park Club Deer Park Club has become a Melbourne bowls mecca. The impressive Ballarat Road venue has hosted a suite of elite tournaments to underline its status as the go-to venue in the metro region. After successfully hosting the Bowls Victoria premier division grand final day and Victorian state team matches, Deer Park Club earned the right to host the Ultimate Bowls Championships (UBC), a franchise-based and fast-paced version of bowls that brought together star players from Australia, New Zealand and Asia in a two-day event last week. Deer Park Club general manager David Thompson says the event was the biggest in the club’s history. Deer Park Club has undergone incredible changes when it comes to bowls. The Parkers have moved into premier division, they have a shiny new facility that makes visiting teams envious and they have ambitions to be the best. “We’ve come from being a so-so type of club just happy to get by,” Thompson said. “Now we’re trying to be the best in the area.” The UBC is held over three locations – at Warilla, Deer Park and, later in the year, Moama. There are 24 franchises taking part, including Deer Park Chargers, boasting top ranked Australian player Lee Schraner, Deer Park club champion Brett Mahoney and England international David Holt. Thompson believes the UBC is to bowls what Twenty20 is to cricket. “It’s a fast, dynamic game, so it’s very exciting stuff,” he said. Deer Park Club has secured hosting rights for the first three years of the UBC. The UBC events are streamed live on the official website, but will also be replayed on 7Two, Fox Sports and channels in New Zealand and throughout Asia in coming weeks. The Cavaliers’ hot form has put them into third place on the ladder with one home-and-away round to play. The Stephen Downes-coached Cavs can lock up a top three finish with a win over fifth-placed Oakleigh Cannons on the road at Jack Edwards Reserve on Sunday. Green Gully enjoyed a thumping 6-2 win over Dandenong Thunder at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday. It was the latest in a string of high-scoring wins for the Cavaliers, who have scored a massive 15 goals in their past four games for three wins and a draw. The Cavs have scored 55 goals at an average of 2.2 goals a game this season – second only to Avondale. Goals to Matthew Fletcher and captain Nick Kalmar had Green Gully ahead of Dandenong Thunder by 2-1 at half-time on Saturday. Four more Cavaliers goals – a second from

penalty spot, in the 89th minute, through a Grgic header, and in the fifth minute of stoppage time through a Josip Konyit header. In women’s NPL, Calder United has claimed its second piece of silverware in a row. Six days after taking out the Nike FC Cup, Calder won the premier’s plate with a 5-0 win over Southern United at Monterey Reserve on Saturday. Aleksandra Sinclair scored two of Calder’s goals, while Golcan Koca and Angie Beard got in on the scoring act, with an own goal thrown in. By Lance Jenkinson When City West Falcons goal defence Mel Oloamanu walks your way on a netball court, you know you are in for a hard game. Pity the opponent who faced the energetic Oloamanu in the Victorian Netball League 19-and-under grand final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Oloamanu helped the Falcons to a 53-41 win over Peninsula Waves in the season decider, taking out the player of the match award in the process. “It felt like a dream, winning the game,” Oloamanu said. “When they called my name [for player of the match], I was in shock, I was speechless.” Oloamanu, 16, is one of the brightest young prospects in Australian netball. She represented Victoria at under-17 level for the first time this year. The Westside Saints-developed youngster starred for the Big V during her 15-and-under years, so the step up was a natural progression. The year 10 Melton Secondary College student was part of the Victorian team that took out fourth place at the under-17 nationals, but she will get the chance to atone next season. By far the biggest accomplishment for Oloamanu came on the international stage as a co-captain of the Australian under-16 netball team. Pulling on the green and gold for the first time this year is something she will never forget. The former Hoppers Crossing junior cherished every moment, despite the sour ending – a one-goal loss to arch-rivals New Zealand in the final. “The first time I represented Australia, it was such an honour,” Oloamanu said. “It was just an amazing experience to go out there and represent this country. “Even though we won silver, I reckon the memories are gold.” Oloamanu was initially uncertain about taking on the co-captaincy of Australia. “At first, I was a bit nervous taking responsibility and I thought it would put pressure on me,” Oloamanu said. “With the help of my two co-captains, it just helped me a lot. We made sure we brought confidence to the team and everything was in place. It was just amazing.” Oloamanu, who idolises English netballer Gave Mentor, grabbed the chance to debut for City West Falcons in the top-flight VNL championship. With spots limited, she knows she will need to keep performing at state and national level to be considered. “That’s one of my biggest goals,” Oloamanu said. “I will try to play my best for the state and

everything and maybe get noticed, like every other player on court. It’s very hard to get those spots.” Oloamanu is the August nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Oloamanu will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.
