It’s been eight years since Barbara Sass has had a full meal. The Kings Park woman has a rare condition called gastroparesis – a disorder in which the stomach muscles are paralysed and unable to process food. A hickman line through her chest transports liquids and medication into her body, but her terminal condition means the 21-year-old weighs 27 kilograms and is experiencing gradual organ failure. “My stomach doesn’t empty, so if I try and eat or drink anything, I vomit everything I ingest up – including food and water, even extra saliva,” Barbara told Star Weekly. “When I was younger, I had bowel issues and my gastroparesis symptoms started when I was 12. I would eat a piece of food and couldn’t hold anything down. “Often I was told that I have bulimia and that I was making myself vomit, but I wasn’t. I want to eat, I don’t want to be sick, but there is no cure.” Intestinal failure, functional gut syndrome and severe malnutrition as well as social ostracisation and depression, are the harsh realities of her illness. Barbara’s battles don’t stop there. She needs expensive specialised equipment and her condition does not qualify for funding under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). She and her mother, Frances, Barbara’s full-time carer, live in transitional housing and both are on disability pensions. While they receive some support through the NDIS for mental health issues, the funding doesn’t stretch to cover a wheelchair, commode and a hospital-style bed that Barbara needs. Yarraville nurse Bianca Bertolini, who has been helping Barbara navigate health funding streams, has been raising $200 a fortnight needed to hire equipment with the help of friends and family – and sometimes from her own pocket. “There’s no place that seems to help out people that don’t fall under NDIS,” Ms Bertolini said. “The assistance that Barbara has received through the scheme is specifically to pay for someone to come and counsel her and someone to wash her or take her shopping.” Ms Bertolini has set up a crowdfunding campaign that has so far raised $2000. “I do it for her,” Ms Bertolini said. “It gets hard at times, but when I get frustrated, I think of Barbara and it keeps me going.” Donate: gofundme.com/f/do-it-for-barb

Hospital doctors ‘exhausted’ Junior doctors at the Sunshine Hospital have launched legal action amid claims they are working beyond exhaustion, underpaid and not given mandatory clinical training – issues they say are putting patients at risk. The fresh claims of exploitation among trainee doctors have prompted the Australian Medical Association’s Victorian branch to pursue action against Western Health, which operates Sunshine and Footscray hospitals, through the Fair Work Commission. Doctors at the health service have said they can work about 60 hours a week, often clocking up 40 hours of overtime on top of their rostered 86 hours a fortnight, and have been rarely

allocated time to attend clinical training. The AMA alleges Sunshine Hospital is in breach of its legal obligations. The case focuses on claims registrars were not being given the 10 hours of clinical training a fortnight mandated under their medical enterprise agreement. Under the medical enterprise agreement, registrars at Sunshine Hospital are rostered to work 86 hours per fortnight, 10 of which must be set aside for medical training. One junior doctor, who was part of the initial claim and spoke to The Age on the condition of anonymity, described a toxic and intimidating culture in which trainees were pressured to

fudge their overtime hours. “Not being able to receive critical training is symbolic of a hospital where a workload is out of control and you’re staying back just to make sure patients are safe,” the doctor said. “But they often question why you can’t get everything done in your shift and blame you for it. It makes you feel powerless, embarrassed and frustrated.” She described instances where it was not uncommon to see junior doctors crying in the residential quarters “because they felt so overstretched, overworked and that they weren’t doing their job well enough”. The doctor said some of her colleagues were

medicated for anxiety and depression. Western Health chief medical officer Dr Paul Eleftheriou said the health service had recently changed work practices to reduce the workload on junior doctors and ensure access to training. “This includes improved rostered access to training time and the introduction of a new training time guideline following consultation with medical staff, as well as improved processes for claiming overtime hours,” he said. Dr Eleftheriou stressed that the ongoing Fair Work Commission negotiations dealt with conditions prior to reforms at the hospital. – The Age

Rubbish woe in the west Across Derrimut, Sunshine, Laverton and Campbellfield, six massive warehouses are filled with waste from insolvent recycler SKM, according to one of the warehouse owners. It says SKM rented the warehouses to stockpile the material, but the recycler has been taken over by liquidators – and it is no longer paying rent on the warehouses. Marwood Construction project co-ordinator Carly Whitington says that two years ago the company agreed to lease its Derrimut warehouse to SKM. Once the lease was signed, she says, “they just filled it up, locked the doors and that was it”. “It took them about eight weeks to fill it up,” she says. “We asked them to start emptying it [last year] and they emptied a little bit – and then we caught them putting more stuff into the warehouse.” Ms Whitington is speaking on behalf of a group of companies – the largest is freight forwarder Tasman Logistics – that own six warehouses she says are filled with similar amounts of material. The Supreme Court declared SKM insolvent and liquidators are now in control of the company. Creditors include the Commonwealth Bank – which the Australian Financial Review reported this week was owed about $60 million. SKM had been processing recycling material for more than 30 councils around Victoria – but abruptly stopped taking household waste last month.

MPs take highway fight higher By Ewen McRae A campaign to upgrade the Western Highway has clicked into gear again, with local MPs raising the issue in federal Parliament recently. Federal members Catherine King and Brendan O’Connor both used speeches in Parliament to call on the government to intervene to ease congestion and deliver long-awaited upgrades. Ms King, who holds the seat of Ballarat, said the upgrades were vital to the fast-growing communities the highway services.

“The link that the Western Highway provides between my electorate of Ballarat and Melbourne is integral to the continued population and economic growth of our regional communities,” she said. “It is the backbone of western Victoria. “As population continues to boom in Melbourne’s west the pace of travel on the road is only slowing. More than 60,000 vehicles travel along the Western Highway in each direction each day, spending increasing amounts of their time sitting still and going nowhere.

“These delays will only grow worse into the future with the highway projected to accommodate 85,000 vehicles per day by 2021 and 113,000 by 2031. “The road as it is simply cannot cope. “The government needs to stop ignoring our region and investigate the best way to move forward to ensure that our communities have the link to Melbourne befitting our rapidly growing population.” Ms King called on the government to deliver new interchanges to service the Melton West and Rockbank areas, as well as the addition of

lines and removal of a grade access between Melton and Caroline Springs. Mr O’Connor, who holds the seat of Gorton, echoed Ms King’s thoughts on the highway’s importance. “The Western Highway needs more investment,” Mr O’Connor said. “It is a very important transport link to not only Ballarat and Bendigo, but also to South Australia, and it’s important the federal government now commit to funding improvements to the Western Highway to ease the ever-growing congestion.”

Grin and beer it festival It’s time to schnapp out the lederhosen and dirndl costumes for the second Oktoberfest in the West. Seaworks at Williamstown will be transformed into a Munich-style beer hall inspired by the volksfest held annually in Bavaria, Germany. This year’s headliners will be legendary Aussie rock outfit Chocolate Starfish performing its INXS Kick show. Westbourne Grammar School’s 18-piece band will open the festival with traditional German songs and funky classics. Spotswood’s Two Birds Brewing will again create a special brew for the event after its kolsch-style beer last year proved to be a crowd-pleaser. Its new cider will also be on tap inside the Pirates Tavern, which will be transformed in to The Wunderbar. Event organiser Craig Turton said up to 3000 guests were expected.

“We’ve got about five imported beers from Germany, including one which is an Oktoberfest special which they brew for Oktoberfest in Germany,” Mr Turton said. “We’ve got a partnership this year with the German Club Tivoli in Melbourne – they’re coming along with their food and also their dancers, who are just phenomenal. “During the day, it’s going to be very German like a traditional Oktoberfest … as we get into the evening, it turns into more contemporary music with Chocolate Starfish finishing off the night with a bang.” Oktoberfest in the West will be on Saturday, October 5, from 2-9pm at Seaworks, 82 Nelson Place, Williamstown. Scouts grounded

Young people from around the west were among a group of 170 Victorian Scouts who were two days late back to school because they were stranded in Los Angeles after the 24th World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia. Engineering issues with the plane had them grounded until Thursday last week.

Drunk drive arrest

An alleged drunk driver crashed his car into a tree then fled the scene, leaving a six-year-old alone in the car. Police are investigating the incident, which occurred in McKechnie Street, St Albans, about 3.50pm on Sunday, August 4. The driver, 40, was arrested and taken to Sunshine police station for an evidentiary breath test. The man is expected to be charged with a string of driving offences as well as conduct endangering life.

Springside West College is less than two years old, but its drama stars are already getting national recognition. The Fraser Rise school entered in the recent Wakakirri competition – the largest school performing arts competition in Australia – and came away with four wins. College head of drama Brooke Middleton said it was fantastic recognition for the school. “It was a pretty cool opportunity for the kids,” Ms Middleton said. “We’re a brand new school and we don’t have a lot of facilities at the moment to do a full school production, but performing arts is definitely a focus of a lot of the students here.” The school won the best teamwork award, best individual costume, a participation

Ms Middleton said the students developed their own ideas for the performances. “We decided to re-tell an Aboriginal Dreamtime story and we decided on that because it is about bullying,” she said. “So straight away we were able to see connections to the story and tie it back to our own experiences. “We’re hoping to move forward with a full school production in the next year or so … this is a fantastic starting point.” Ewen McRae

Young and living rough Young people have shared their stories of hardship and hope as part of Homelessness Week. Jesuit Social Services screened two short films featuring interviews with two young people who spoke about their experiences of living rough in Brimbank at its Participants’ Voices event last Thursday. Jesuit Social Services runs three social housing programs across Victoria for young people experiencing homelessness or with mental illness or disabilities. Housing and complex needs manager Leanne Acreman said the films aimed to raise awareness of people experiencing homelessness, the issues they faced and the action needed to achieve enduring solutions.

On March 18, 2019, Jayden MURPHY failed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court. Three warrants to arrest were issued for offences including theft of motor vehicle, attempt to escape custody of police, handling stolen goods and driving whilst suspended. “They talk about their journey coming from childhood trauma and having issues after being in custody and out of home care, to then being supported by homelessness programs and having access to housing and after hours support,” Ms Acreman said. “We also wanted to showcase some of the programs we have available and the impact they have in transforming the lives of young people. “We know that there’s been a 43 per cent increase in a decade of young people experiencing homelessness. “Our aim is to provide housing and as much support as we can for these young people.”

On October 11, 2018 Sarah McCART failed to appear in court to answer charges including driving whilst suspended. A warrant was issued for her arrest. On February 1, 2019, McCART failed to appear to answer charges including driving whilst disqualified and driving an unregistered motor vehicle. Three warrants were issued for her arrest. On June 18, 2019 a fifth warrant was issued for offences including unlicensed driving. Police are seeking information as to McCART’S current whereabouts. Winter warmers fuel fire risks By Esther Lauaki Unattended cooking, electrical appliances and heating are the top three causes of fires across the west. Alarming statistics recently released by the CFA for District 14, which takes in Werribee, Melton, Brimbank, Hume and Whittlesea, have sparked a warning for residents in outer metro areas to be more careful with fire risks in the home this winter. the most common cause of residential fires during the peak time of between 6pm and 7pm. Data also showed the risk of dying from fire was greatest at night when occupants were asleep, with many bedroom fires involving heating systems, appliances and equipment.

District 14 operations manager David Harris said residents need to be vigilant at home as most fires could have been prevented. “In the cooler months we spend more time at home and the things we use to keep warm such as heaters, electric blankets and home cooking can pose significant danger when used inappropriately,” Mr Harris said. “In 2018 in district 14, the most common room in which fires started was the kitchen, which reflects the statewide findings. “The next most common local rooms of ignition were living areas and bedrooms.

“A majority of these fires are avoidable and are an ongoing concern for firefighters who see again and again the devastating impact on families and their property. “This winter we are asking locals to never leave cooking unattended, make sure you leave at least a metre gap when drying clothes near a heating source and ensure powered electrical appliances like hairdryers, hair straighteners and laptops are not left on bedding.” Mr Harris urged residents to understand the risks and take action to make their home fire-safe.

A very timely tale Caroline Chisholm Catholic College students have worked against the clock to create a story book. A team of years 7 to 12 students earlier this month had 12 hours to write and illustrate a book aimed at children in hospitals across Australia as part of the Write a Book in a Day initiative for The Kids Cancer Project. Their challenge was to produce a book, written to randomly selected parameters. The story had to incorporate building blocks, a sailor and gymnast as the main characters and a setting in a ghost town hit by a cyclone. They were also asked to use the words community, skipped, magic, canvas and sings. The budding writers produced a book called Sailing in the Sky about a lone Aussie sailor who finds himself trapped in a ghost town. Supervising teacher Magda Hoszko said the challenge encouraged teamwork and creativity.

“The students love the spirit of collaboration that the day fosters,” Ms Hoszko said. “They get to work across campuses and year levels in a spirit of camaraderie … I hope they want to write more stories.” The competition continues until August 31and a winning book will be selected next month. Shop’s aim is spot on Brimbank Shopping Centre’s new-look Target store has hit the bullseye. The store has undergone its first refurbishment in more than 20 years and celebrated its official reopening last week. Store manager Simone Favasuli said construction began in June on the refurbishment, which includes a new compact layout, storefront, flooring, fixtures, customer service point and assisted checkouts. “This is the first time in 23 years that the store has had such a revamp and it’s looking fantastic,” Ms Favasuli said.

“In October last year, we finalised the renewal of our lease and our commitment to remain in Deer Park. “This commitment included a reduction in total space, and handed back the old ‘garden shop’, reducing our total store area from 7100 square metres to 6700 square metres. “The renewed store has improved our departmental flow which has made it an easier shopping experience for our customers to find, love and buy.” Esther Lauaki

NBN spreads its Brimbank reach By Ewen McRae Parts of Hillside and Taylors Hill are set to complete the transition to the NBN in the coming weeks. About 420 homes and business in parts of Hillside, Taylors Hill and Wyndham Vale are still to connect to the network as part of a nationwide upgrade to Australian telecommunications. From August 9, most existing landline phone and internet services in the area will be progressively replaced by the new network and will no longer work over the existing

infrastructure. More than 2400 homes and businesses in the area have placed an order for NBN services in the past 18 months. However, connecting is not automatic, and those who are yet to switch are encouraged to contact their preferred phone and internet service provider to place an order as soon as possible to continue using their landline phone and internet services. Residents and business owners should call their internet provider and speak about their internet needs and any special equipment or services operating on their current landline

service over the NBN access network, this is the final stage of the transition to the new infrastructure and brings the community closer to fully embracing the benefits of fast broadband. “If you have any special equipment that operates on your current landline, it’s important you talk with your phone and internet service provider to get the right support when moving across. “You should also visit the NBN Co website to register devices such as medical alarms and lift phones.” Details: www.nbnco.com.au

Hanging up his boots Garry Sciberras says he is looking forward to having his weekends back after more than two decades of nurturing young players through the Overnewton Auskick program. The long-serving coach and Auskick district manager is retiring after 23 years of service during which he’s gone from parent helper to overseeing 18 centres around the state. “I am turning 62 and it’s time to say goodbye to my beautiful Auskick family,” Mr Sciberras said. “I started at Overnewton as a parent helper, helping teach our third son how to play football, teaching basic skills like marking, kicking, handball and scooping up the ball. “I then became head coach and co-ordinator to district manager, looking after 11 Auskick centres in the north-west and western region to now looking after seven centres in the Melbourne metro region.”

He said being able to be part of children’s lives in educating them in mateship, sharing and life skills was what he enjoyed most from the experience. “There is so much that I love about this task and responsibility … giving them opportunities to play this great game on the holy grail of sporting arenas, the MCG or Marvel Stadium and or playing at Visy Park,” Mr Sciberras said. “Seeing their faces light up when they run onto the ground in their Auskick gear, or in the team colours of who is playing on the day. “[And] Watching our children learn how to play the game and watching them develop into very good footballers and winning the major prize of a grand final. “These are a few of the things that are my favourite.” Esther Lauaki

Pop Culture Event: Essential Oils Workshop

Cr Bob Turner Last weekend, Council and Caroline Springs RSL, honoured our fallen heroes, at the dedication of a new war memorial, situated on the promenade at Lake Caroline. The memorial is a partnership between Council and the Caroline Springs RSL, who received a Federal Government grant, to help deliver the project, and is a stunning reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave service men and women.

Essential oils can help strengthen your immunity, boost your energy, and assist with anxiety and sleep issues. They can even be used to provide relief from headaches, sore throats and digestive issues, and are commonly used to treat muscle aches and skin issues. As part of Melton City Council’s Pop Culture program, we’re hosting an introductory workshop where you can find out how to safely incorporate essential oils into your daily life. You’ll learn more about essential oils and how they can benefit you and your family. The workshop, on Friday 23 August, will include recipes for common health and wellness concerns, kids blends (for sleep, worry, overactive minds), and cleaning products that will reduce the use of chemicals in your home and improve your family’s health. Cr Steve Abboushi Earlier this month, I had the privilege of hosting Mr Kimon Taliadoros, President of Football Victoria, and talking to him about the future of soccer in our City. I also had the opportunity to show Kimon around the City Vista Sports Precinct, a state-of-the-art soccer and recreation facility, recently constructed in Fraser Rise. The new facility features two grass soccer pitches and two synthetic soccer pitches, with spectator fencing, and sports field lighting; along with a pavilion, bistro, commercial kitchen, canteen space, umpires rooms, first aid rooms, eight change rooms, and storage, among other features. This $12 million project is the result of a partnership with George Cross Soccer Club who have contributed $1 million to the cost of the development, and will operate and maintain the pavilion and sports fields.

In recent weeks, we’ve experienced a spate of terrifying motor vehicle accidents on Westwood Drive, Burnside. As a result, I have submitted a Notice of Motion for the next Ordinary Council Meeting (19 August) asking for State representatives, Hon Marlene Kairouz MP, as well as members of the Victorian Legislative Council representing Western Victoria, advocating that VicRoads takes ownership of the Palmers Road Corridor, which includes Westwood Drive, and undertake urgent works on this stretch of road to prevent future incidents, injuries, or worse, fatalities. Scout leaders honoured With 170 members, the 1st Caroline Springs Scouts are thriving – in no small part due to the work of their leaders, five of whom have received service recognition awards from Scouts Victoria. Karen Sant, Trudie Sanders Ross, Brenden McLean and Brad Pemberton received a Special Service medal, while Cub leader Carl Mouser received a meritorious service award. Mr Mouser said it was satisfying to be recognised. “As volunteers, we’re putting in our own time so it is nice to get noticed, but it’s obviously not why we do it,” he said. “My daughter came along with a friend, and when I saw how much fun she was having

I thought I should have some fun as well, so I started on the committee and then became a leader nearly 10 years ago.” Ms Sant said watching the kids grow was the biggest reward. “Scouts is like a second family for all of us so we enjoy coming down here to help them out,” she said. Ms Sanders Ross said the way Scouts accepted all comers was one of its greatest assets. “The kids that come to scouting might not always fit in everywhere else, but they can fit in here, be themselves and challenge themselves,” she said.

I was born in Brimbank, right across the road from Sunshine Baseball Club. My father played baseball with Sunshine and I was involved essentially from the day I was born. I started playing baseball aged 12.

How long have you lived in the area? I lived, grew up and went to school in Brimbank. I have spent many days chasing lizards and rabbits along Kororoit Creek. I lived in Brimbank until 27. What are you passionate about? Playing and being actively involved with Sunshine Baseball Club. I played with Sunshine and now my children are playing with Sunshine. What does your role within the Sunshine Baseball Club involve? Most recently coaching senior and junior teams. This season I am junior co-ordinator with Sunshine Baseball Club and looking forward to young people in Brimbank joining to experience a new sport and meet new friends. What would you like to achieve in your role this season?

Changes proposed for Deer Park Community Health Centre would bring patients into line with charges elsewhere, it was reported this week.

Newly-elected Keilor councillor Petar Zukanovic was “ignoring and destroying the environment” of St Albans residents and became involved in local politics “to resolve his problems” the Member for St Albans, Mr Alex Andrianopoulos said in State Parliament last Friday.

Kenny Weir is happy to find a Footscray institution back in business Cafe d’Afrique is renowned for being the first African coffee shop in Footscray. Proprietor Faisel Pkesy (pictured) reckons it’s also the first African business of any kind in this neighbourhood – and who am I to argue? Keen Footscray watchers will know that Cafe d’Afrique was closed for what seemed like ages. But – oh, joy! – Faisel and his wonderful enterprise are back. There’s new artwork on show, but the welcome and the food remain the same. Faisel says he may introduce a menu once things settle down a bit. But, heck, we like the no-menu set-up. We’re not the only ones who wander in here and ask: “What’s on?” For Bennie and I, that means a gloriously rich lamb key wot – that terrific gravy is made without tomatoes. Bennie has his with rice. I have mine with injera. There are some bones in the lamb, but the meat is fall-apart tender and delicious. We each also get a serve of an equally scrumptious okra stew, also with lamb. As well, we are provided a side bowl of a beaut lentil stew and matching crisp, fresh salads. The price of our lunches is $15 apiece – that seems to be the going rate for everything here, no matter what choices or configuration you go with. The coffee, of course, is excellent. And that costs $3.

SPORT Ominous signs as Deer Park notches up twin wins As the six-time defending premier, Deer Park is automatically thrust into the conversation about Western Region Football League division 1 title contention. For much of this season, though, the Lions have been talked up as contenders more on the back of reputation, rather output on the park. That is not all their own doing because they have endured injury struggles with key players in a season in which a number of opposition clubs have taken giant strides forward in terms of star power. So it has been hard to get a gauge whether the Lions should still be considered the team to beat or just a challenger to Altona, which was confirmed as minor premier on Saturday. The past two weeks might have provided a better indication of where Deer Park sits, as opposed to how it looked a fortnight ago. The Lions have broken back into the top three with stirring wins over Werribee Districts and

Spotswood – the latter a memorable victory away from home. Lions coach Marc Bullen admits it was tough going a fortnight ago as they strived not just for a double chance in the finals, but also simply to maintain a finals berth.

Bullen has been impressed with how his players have responded to the immense pressure of the past two games. Cobras snare their prey By Lance Jenkinson Albanvale has been in hot pursuit of Glen Orden for the best part of 16 weeks in the Western Region Football League division 3. The Cobras have lurked in the grass, waiting for their time to pounce and they finally reeled them in on Saturday, coming from 30 points down at quarter-time to beat Glen Orden in the top-of-the-ladder clash and move into first place for the first time this season. Cobras coach Andrew Bryson was delighted with the pressure-filled game his team produced in a blockbuster fixture with plenty on the line. “I couldn’t be happier with their effort,” he said. “We just had our competitive edge. “It was constant pressure.” Albanvale was in trouble at quarter-time, trailing by five goals. “Even in the first quarter, we still had a fair share of the footy, but we just weren’t clean with it and made some poor decisions,” Bryson said. “We just had to focus and they did that for the next three quarters to not only get us back in the game, but ultimately ended up getting us over the line.” Bryson pointed to Albanvale’s fitness as a key factor in the win. He felt the Cobras ran the game out better and it showed with a six-goal-to-three second half. “We started to see an opportunity to out-run them probably halfway through the third quarter,” Bryson said. “Once we saw we had that over them, we wanted to exploit that as much as we could.” Leading a low-scoring game by five points at three-quarter time, Albanvale sealed victory with a two-goal-to-one last quarter. David Azzopardi had a big impact with three goals on the Cobras forward line.

Azzopardi could have helped himself to a bag of goals if not for his inaccuracy. “I said to him at one point in the game, you’re leading well, you’re winning the footy, keep doing that and the rest will come,” Bryson said. “It ended up working out that way. “Not only was he able to present and win the footy, he was able to convert.” Ricky Cameron, Daniel Backus and Kym Taylor were superb for Albanvale. Cameron continued his good form in the midfield, Backus was “hard in the trenches” and Taylor was able to burst away from the packs. Daniel Bartolo and Dean Pace snared two goals apiece. Albanvale is not planning for a short stay at the top, but it will need to be at the top of its game against Braybrook, always a danger side this season. “They’ve got a good list,” Bryson said. “They could rattle a few sides, including us.”

Melbourne Knights were left devastated after suffering a 1-0 loss to Hume City in the 2019 Dockerty Cup final at a chilly Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Saturday night. The Knights went a goal down in the 26th minute when Hume City star James Brown unleashed a long-range curling effort over the out-stretched arms of goalkeeper Harry Cakarun. It would prove a fatal blow to the Knights’ hopes of lifting a 10th Dockerty Cup as the Marijan Cvitkovic-coached side did plenty of attacking in the second half only to draw blanks. It was the exclamation mark on a bleak week on the field for Melbourne Knights. The Knights were bundled out of league finals earlier in the week and sunk 5-2 to A-League side Adelaide United in the FFA Cup round of 32. However, Knights fans could walk away proud of their team for getting so deep into the cup competitions, even if they ultimately came up short. It was a much better final experience for Calder United, who completed a three-peat of titles in the women’s Nike FC Cup final on Sunday night. Calder ran out 2-0 winners over Box Hill United at C.B. Smith Reserve. Calder was in control from the outset, opening its account in the first minute with a goal to Catherine Zimmerman. Keilor regroups after a miserable defeat Keilor has been made to pay for a below par performance in Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division. Saints are in top shape By Lance Jenkinson The first 24 rounds have been a joyride for St Albans Saints and the three other clubs in contention for the National Premier League 2 west title, but now it’s time to get down to business. With four rounds to go, there is no margin for error for the Saints, who have a tentative grip on top spot on goal difference from Moreland Zebras. Both the Saints and the Zebras have 45 points, with Werribee City (43 points) and North Geelong Warriors (41) continuing to snap at their heels. Three different clubs have occupied top spot in the past five rounds – St Albans is trying to buck the trend of the short-stay leaders. Saints coach Kruni Razov acknowledges his side is “the hunted”. “We’re up for the challenge,” he said. Thunder storms into grand final Keilor Thunder is the first team through to the Big V basketball women’s state championship grand final. The Thunder went into the playoffs as one of the form teams on the back of a four-game winning streak. The Tom Bandilovski-coached Thunder secured a direct route to the decider after a hard-fought 80-74 victory over defending champions Sunbury Jets at Boardman Stadium on Saturday night. Keilor was magnificent early, opening up a 17-point, half-time lead. The Thunder needed every bit of that lead as Sunbury mounted a comeback with a 23-10 third-quarter blitz. Leading by four at three-quarter time, Keilor steadied in the fourth period to hold on for a famous win in the club’s history that leaves them one step away from a title. Erin Bollmann’s class shone through for Keilor. She finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals in a stellar performance. Ellen Kett did a little bit of everything for Keilor with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists, while A’Lexus Harrison and Aneta Bandilovski both scored 11. “He started the season really well and then went through a flat patch,” Razov said. “But he’s turned the corner. “He’s quick, he’s explosive and he knows where the goals are when he’s on song. “He’s found his rhythm again.” St Albans will play three of its last four games at home.

Rare returns for car classic By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Australasia’s premier annual exhibition of rare, classic, collectible and significant cars and motorcycles will celebrate its 10th event this year, with dates confirmed for October 11 – 13. Motorclassica will once again be staged at Melbourne’s world heritage-listed Royal Exhibition Building, its home since the inaugural event of 2010. This year’s Motorclassica 2019 will have an anticipated entry of 150 vehicles for 2019 on the polished wooden boards of the Royal Exhibition building. Outside will be the club-based displays known as Club Sandwich, which will see a further 200 cars and motorcycles on show, alongside 30 exotic modern supercars from Lorbek Luxury Cars. Significant automotive milestones will include 100 years of the Bentley marque, as well as Alvis, and contrasting with those British brands, a century of the innovative French maker Citroen. Arguably the most recognisable car in the world, the Mini, will be honoured for its 60 years while, by contrast, so too will Abarth, an Italian tuner feted for its performance modifications to Fiat and Lancia models over the past 70 years. Increasingly collectible, Japan’s often unheralded role in the global development of the modern sportscar will also be recognised at Motorclassica with a specially curated tribute. On the Motorclassica central stage, a series of special guests and industry experts will entertain, educate and advise show-goers on all aspects of the automotive lifestyle and makes of vehicles.
