Twice as nice for twins Thomas and Christopher O’Reilly love being twins. The year 12 students are one of 17 sets of twins at Caroline Chisholm College. The Braybrook school marked National Twins Day last Thursday by organising a photo featuring all of the twins. Thomas, who came up with the idea, said he felt it was important to celebrate everything that was great about being a twin. “Twins have a special connection and we are not everywhere,” he said. “We always know when something is wrong with the other. Sometimes we feel the same emotions. For example if we are in the same room and Christopher is feeling embarrassed then I will feel it too.” Christopher said the brothers were regularly asked if their family had trouble telling them apart. “Mum never mixes us up,” he said. House sale optimism up By Laura Michell House prices have fallen by as much as 18 per cent across Brimbank in the past year, but agents say the market is showing signs of recovery. New data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria reveals that Sunshine was the worst-affected market in Brimbank, with the median house price falling 18 per cent from $855,000 in June, 2018, to $695,000 in June, 2019. St Albans and Caroline Springs also recorded significant drops in median house prices.

In St Albans, the median price fell 15 per cent from $637,000 in June, 2018, to $541,000 in June this year. In Caroline Springs, the median price in June, 2019, was $540,000 – a drop of 14 per cent from June, 2018, when the median price was $630,000. Statewide, the median house price fell six per

cent from $841,000 in June, 2018, to $785,000 in June this year. Douglas Kay agent Peter Kay said confidence was returning to the market. He said attendances at open for inspections were up and more buyers were taking part in auctions and private sales than in previous months. “We have seen more sales in July than we have in all other months this year,” he said. “Speaking with other agents in Brimbank, they are feeling very positive. “Listings are starting to come back on to

the market … supply has been low. There is confidence from sellers, which translates to confidence from buyers.” Mr Kay said changes to lending regulations and record low interest rates had combined to restore buyer confidence in the real estate market. He said now was an ideal time for people to enter the market. “There are that many external indicators saying it’s time to enter [the market] again,” he said. “It will be the best time in a long time.”

Workers fed up with hoon events By Laura Michell A Tullamarine business owner has slammed the “out of control” hoons holding regular meets in the Lambeck Drive area. Bill, who asked for his surname to be withheld, owns a business on Mareno Road, and said hoon meets had been an ongoing problem in the area for the past two years, with a meet held on July 25. He said the events, which are often attended by 40 to 50 people, were causing damage to the roads and nature strips in the area.

He said workers often arrived at businesses along Lambeck Drive and Mareno Road to find the roads littered with rubber. “They are destroying the area … it’s like a war zone,” Bill said. “They even do burnouts on the nature strips and knocked down a no standing sign.” Other workers along Mareno Road told Star Weekly the meets had started to occur twice a week, with the destruction caused by the latest event the worst they had seen. Bill has reported the meets to Hume council and Brimbank and Fawkner highway patrols

but said no action has been taken. “I feel that until someone gets killed no one will do anything,” he said. Brimbank Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Emile Caggiati said police did regular patrols in the industrial area around Lambeck Drive but needed to be alerted to the hoon meets when they were occurring. “It’s unfair for the business owners because obviously there are no businesses open when the meets are occurring,” he said. Acting Sergeant Caggiati said anti-hoon laws introduced in Brimbank in 2018 were helping

to make a difference. A police operation in nearby Harrick Road during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June resulted in about 300 people being fined for attending a hoon event. The offence attracts an $800 fine. “They are reckless, they are dangerous, they are putting lives at risk and damaging property,” Acting Sergeant Caggiati said. “We want to catch these offenders so we need support from the public to let us know it is happening. That is the greatest chance of catching them.”

The club is hosting a series of come-and-try days over the coming weeks to give children a chance to learn more about baseball. Brimbank residents are being encouraged to take recyclable paper and cardboard to drop-off points at Keilor Park and Laverton North in a bid to reduce the amount of recycling heading to landfill. The council has introduced the paper and cardboard recycling drop-off points in response to the sudden shutdown of SKM Recycling on July 26. The company, which receives recycling collections from 33 Victorian councils, informed councils on July 25 it would stop accepting recyclable materials. SKM said the shutdown was a result of an Environment Protection Authority order for sister company, Glass Recovery Services, to stop accepting combustible recycling waste. As a result of the SKM shutdown, recycling collections from across Brimbank have been going to landfill. Mayor Lucinda Congreve said there was no other viable option for the short-term storage and management of recycling as Melbourne’s remaining recycling plants had limited capacity. “This is a hugely frustrating time for the community and for council,” she said. Paper and cardboard can be dropped off at the Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre, 72 Stadium Drive, Keilor Park between 9am-4pm on weekdays and 9am-1pm on Saturdays, or One Paper at 32 Plummer Road, Laverton North between 8am-4pm, Monday to Friday. On Friday, the Supreme Court declared SKM insolvent and granted an application to wind up the company.

Gaming losses top the state By Laura Michell More money was lost on gaming machines in Brimbank in the past financial year than anywhere else in Victoria. Latest data from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation reveals that $142.9 million was lost at Brimbank’s 15 gaming venues in 2018-19. The next highest loss was in Casey, where $132.4 million was lost on machines. Brimbank’s gaming losses have risen from $139.5 million in 2017-18.

The Kealba Hotel ranked fourth in the state for the highest amount of money lost to poker machines, with $19.2 million lost in 2018-19. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said it was frustrating that the council had next to no say over gaming machines, with the industry regulated by the state and federal government. She said Brimbank has recorded the highest gaming losses in the state for a number of years. “To hear that people in Brimbank are losing $391,518 a day on pokies is horrifying,” Cr Congreve said. “Our city cannot sustain these losses.

“Poker machine addiction needs to be recognised as a public health risk and urgent reforms are needed to address this.” In May, the council adopted an electronic gambling policy which aims to reduce the economic, social and health harm associations with poker machines. As part of the policy, the council will not allow new poker machines on council-owned land. It is also advocating for a reduction of the number of poker machines allowed in Brimbank. Currently, state government legislation allows for 953 machines in the municipality.

Alliance for Gambling Reform spokesman Tim Costello said poker machines were contributing to much more than the loss of money in Brimbank. “In extreme cases, poker machines can cause the loss of lives due to suicide,” he said. “There is the loss of homes, families, relationships, jobs, cars and much more due to gambling harm. “Brimbank residents should be shouting from the rooftops about how the poker machine industry preys on people living in their municipality and seek an end to this exploitation.”

A little ray of Sunshine A cafe dedicated to employing refugees and asylum seekers has opened in Sunshine. Cafe Sunshine has partnered with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to give jobs to new arrivals who are struggling to get their first job in Australia. Co-founders Jen Morillas and Hamed Allahyari decided to open the cafe after volunteering with the ASRC. Mr Allahyari, who owned his own restaurant in Iran, was the kitchen manager and volunteer co-ordinator at ASRC and dreamt of opening his own place in Melbourne, while Ms Morillas was part of the centre’s kitchen team. Ms Morillas said the Dickson Street cafe opened with the help of the state government’s Pick My Project grant last year. “Our goal from the get-go has been to employ ASRC members,” she said. “We currently have four front of house staff who are working next to qualified mentors.

We also have Hamed and three staff from the ASRC working in the kitchen. “We aim to have the place 100 per cent run by refugees and asylum seekers as soon as we can.” Ms Morillas said the Sunshine community had been incredibly supportive of the cafe. “We believe that partnerships such as ours are vital in the community,” she said. “The ASRC helps us by providing us with enthusiastic and dedicated staff, and we in turn are able to promote the ASRC’s work through our cafe.” Laura Michell

Stony Creek funding optimism By Laura Michell

Student’s drive pays off Two years of hard work have paid off for Fredrick Onaput – the St Albans resident has been named as one of Kangan Institute’s most outstanding students. The 38-year-old, who is from Papua New Guinea, was named as Kangan’s outstanding international student in automotive at a recent awards ceremony. Mr Onaput said he enrolled at Kangan because he wanted to build a career in the automotive industry. “I used to work in technical schools in the automotive field, so I was inspired to build more skills in that trade,” he said. “The automotive program also offers a job placement which helps us learn more than just theory and gain work experience while we study. “I’ve worked for about two years as a trade assistant as part of my placement.” Having completed his studies, Mr Onaput is keen to take the next step in his career. “My plan is to get a full-time job in an automotive workshop and then apply for a Trade Recognition Australia certificate and eventually become a skilled automotive technician in Australia,” he said. “I feel really privileged to be nominated for this award. It means a lot to me and my family and reminds of the hard work and commitment put towards my … study.

A Western suburbs MP says he is confident more funding will be found to complete the Upper Stony Creek Transformation Project. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Brimbank council last month said it could be left with an $11.3 million hole in the ground after work on the project came to a halt because it was discovered the ground was contaminated with asbestos. The project, to transform a 1.2-kilometre section of Upper Stony Creek from a concrete drain to a natural state, is a partnership between all levels of government and private enterprise. Western Metropolitan Labor MP Cesar Melhem said the project was important and would be completed. He said government departments were working to find more money for the project. “I’m confident the project will be continued … it needs to be done,” he said. Brimbank mayor Lucinda Congreve said the council was concerned that while the contract for the project remained in place, machinery had been moved offsite and the gates padlocked. “The longer nothing happens on the site, the more difficult the situation becomes,” Cr Congreve said. “All of the project partners and agencies have indicated that they want to keep this project going.” The council has launched a petition calling for the state and federal governments to “show leadership” over what it says is fast becoming an issue of “environmental justice for the west”. Runway fears

Brimbank council is calling for the re-instatement of an environmental monitoring unit at Keilor and increased noise monitoring following Melbourne Airport’s decision to revisit plans for a second north-south runway. The council says Melbourne Airport’s proposal to change the new runway alignment from east-west to north-south could impact Brimbank’s environment, including Brimbank Park.

A model pastime For Ted Allan, there’s something special about model railways. The Sunshine resident said creating model railways reminded him of days gone by when steam trains ran across Victoria. These days, Mr Allan is part of the Sunshine Model Railway Club, which held its annual exhibition at the weekend. “A lot of us old guys remember the last of the steam trains in Victoria,” he said. “Being part of the model railway club is a chance to get involved with woodworking, electrics and building things from scratch.”

The club spends 12 months planning and preparing for its annual exhibition. This year’s event featured 20 layouts and a mix of old and new trains. Brimbank parents are being encouraged to accept or decline their children’s kindergarten offers for 2020 as soon as possible. Brimbank council recently sent out four-year-old kindergarten offers, detailing which kinder each child had been allocated to. Cooper’s hoops dreams By Laura Michell Cooper Kirkman dreams of a career in the National Basketball League. The Taylors Lakes Secondary College year 12 student has taken a big step towards realising his dream after securing a place in the Victorian under-18s boys basketball team that will compete in the Schools Sport Australia championships. The team will face sides from across the country in Bendigo from August 10-16. Cooper, who plays for the Hume City Broncos in Big V men’s youth league division 1, said it was an honour to be selected to represent Victoria. “I have loved playing basketball since I was five years old,” he said. “It is exciting to be selected for this team and I just cannot wait to play. “When I found out I was selected for the team I was pretty proud of myself to be honest. It’s a great achievement.” Cooper said he was relishing the opportunity to compete at a high level and was hopeful of helping the team win a gold medal. “Making the School Sport Victoria team has given me the drive to pursue a higher level of basketball in the future,” he said, “I’m only 17, but I would love to play NBL in years to come. I really want to take everything I learn on board and implement it into my basketball game.” Cooper started playing junior basketball at representative level at Keilor Thunder, but this year decided to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Bailey, and move to the Broncos. The brothers now play in the same team. He said he loved every aspect of basketball – even taking on Bailey and his other brother, Logan, in a friendly game in the backyard.

War memorial set to open at Caroline Springs The new Caroline Springs war memorial will be officially consecrated at a dedication ceremony this weekend. After years of hard work, the Caroline Springs RSL officially unveiled its new memorial near Lake Caroline during this year’s Anzac Day service. This Sunday, a formal dedication ceremony will take place, allowing the RSL to include the memorial on Victoria’s war memorial register. The memorial was built after the RSL secured two $40,000 grants, one each from Melton council and the Department of Veteran Affairs. Caroline Springs RSL membership officer Peter Burquest said the memorial, which features rows of poppies and the words ‘Les We Forget’, was important to the community. The ceremony, which will start at 10am, will be followed by the RSL sub-branch’s annual veterans lunch. Drug driving on the rise By Ewen McRae Melton drivers are among the worst in the state for drug driving offences according to new police data. The data shows 66 drug driving infringement notices were issues in Melton in 2018, the third highest number in the state behind Frankston (67) and Wodonga (88). Nearby Melton South also recorded 24 drug driving notices, while Bacchus Marsh had 17.

On March 1, 2019, Tony RIZZA failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court. Two warrants to arrest were issued for offences including theft of motor vehicle, unlicensed driving and obtaining property by deception. On March 26, 2019 a further warrant to arrest was issued when RIZZA failed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates Court to answer a charge of robbery. Police are seeking information as to RIZZA’s current whereabouts.

A charge and warrant to arrest was issued for Huong VU on March 6, 2019. The relevant charge being driving whilst disqualified. On February 6, 2019, VU failed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court to answer a charge of obtaining property by deception. A warrant was issued for his arrest. However the notices only form part of the data – 295 Melton drivers failed drug driving tests – roughly 50 per cent of the 735 roadside drug driving tests administered in the area in 2018. Melton also sat inside the top 10 suburbs in the state for total drink and drug driving infringement notices, with 109 notices placing it seventh in the state for 2018. Melton Highway Patrol Sergeant Chris Stuhldreier said the 295 failed drug tests that did not receive an infringement notice were destined for the courts. “Where there are no prior offences or convictions, they get an infringement notice, but if we’re going to impound their car or there

are prior offences we are going to court,” he said. “So the vast majority of drug driving offenders are either repeat offenders, or they have some sort of record that makes it necessary to put it before a magistrate. “Across the state there were 100,000 drug tests given, whereas for drink driving it’s over four million, so we are a bit more targeted with our drug tests. “The vast majority of the community would be shocked by the high detection rates.” Methamphetamine, MDMA and cannabis were the most common drugs detected in drivers. Sergeant Stuhldreier said the data reflected a statewide drugs issue, but hoped the message would slowly spread. “Demographics obviously play a major part, when you’re talking urban fringes and those low socio-economic areas we tend to see a higher reading of illicit drugs,” he said. “We know drug use is a problem across the entire community so it’s not isolated to any one particular area. “Unfortunately we know that most of those that test positive are going to keep using drugs and drive, but if we can test your average Joe Citizen and really put the wind up them, it will hopefully act as a deterrent. “We’re 40 years down the track with testing for alcohol and the detection numbers there continue to drop so I would imagine over time we would see something similar for drugs.”

Kinder rates below state average By Laura Michell Fewer four-year-olds are attending kindergarten in Brimbank, with the municipality’s participation rate falling below the state average. Kindergarten attendance data from the Department of Education and Training reveals that in 2018, 88.1 per cent of four-year-olds living in Brimbank attended kinder. The state attendance average for 2018 was 92.1 per cent. Speaking at a recent council meeting,

Cr Margaret Giudice said the council had developed a kindergarten participation project to examine kinder attendance. The project was developed in conjunction with the education department and kinders and provides the council with a snapshot of attendance date at six kindergartens. “Children are tracked to see if they are going, why not, if they are late and where the gaps are,” Cr Guidice said. “As we know, going to kinder is one of the most important things children can do. “[The project] will help children and mothers

to understand how important kinder is.” Brimbank council acting community wellbeing director Ashley Fleming said it was not compulsory for four-year-olds to attend kindergarten. “It’s a parental decision whether they choose to send their children to kindergarten,” he said. “It is well known children who attend kindergarten have better social and cognitive skills compared to children who do not attend kinder, and have a smoother transition to primary school.” Mr Fleming said the council does not operate

kindergartens but managed a registration service for all funded kindergarten programs in Brimbank that are not attached to a long day care service. He said the council had identified vacancies at sessional kindergartens, which could be because more parents are choosing to send their children to kindergarten at a child care centre. “Some families choose to send their children to kindergarten programs in long day care centres which provide longer hours than the sessional model,” he said.

Mastering the game Women are being invited to join the first inner west AFLW over-35s side. Williamstown Superules masters football club co-ordinator, Sharlene “Charlie” Hetherington, said the side started this year and was seeking more women to sign up. “We’ve got 19 women that had never played football before and have lived out this childhood dream,” she said. “Some of the people are saying that in their families it was just not something that was supported or allowed. “Other people were saying [they] played in primary school but they got to year 11 and 12 and were told, nup, girls can’t play footy. “It’s quite unique that there’s this coming together of this band of women, of various abilities and shapes and sizes and reasons they’re there, that have formed this bond.” Hetherington said the club had created

a camaraderie among a network of women whom otherwise may never have met. “The friends that I’ve made this year through football – some women that have experienced family violence, that have experienced significant isolation or mental health issues – they now have a network of 40 women that are in their life to step in and support them and feel they’re proud of something. “A few women have said, ‘I’ve actually joined just to get street cred with my kids so that they can see I can start something new at 40, that you are never too old to learn new skills; that this is completely out of my comfort zone’.” Women can join in various capacities – not just as players – including as social members. Homeless on the rise in the west By Alesha Capone Workers in the field of homelessness say an increasing number of people are sleeping rough in the west. Northern and Western Homelessness Network representative, Meredith Gorman, said that homelessness was becoming more visible across Melbourne’s suburbs. “We are now seeing people sleeping rough in areas such as Werribee and Dallas, as well as in the city,” she said. “As a sector, we know that it is distressing

for the community to witness the high level of vulnerability and need that we are seeing on the streets of Melbourne.” The Northern and Western Homelessness Network is made up of 50 specialist homelessness and family violence organisations. Ms Gorman said that people sleeping rough “represent the tip of iceberg in terms of homelessness in Melbourne”. In 2017-18, homelessness services in Melbourne’s north and west provided support to 31,000 households, which were home to more than 6000 children.

John McAleer may not be an avid watcher of MasterChef, but there’s still a little bit of him in MasterChef every episode. The Melton jeweller has been making the iconic pins, which give the wearers the ability to avoid elimination from the competition, for the past six seasons of the hit tv show. Amazingly, he almost missed the chance to be part of the long-running series. “I got a phone call randomly just before Good Friday about six years ago asking me to make these pins,” he said. “They told me they needed three pins in a week, and it was just before Easter when we close, but I obviously knew of the show so thought I’d better do it. “I don’t even watch the show, so I just assumed they gave them to the contestants at the end, but now each year I get an email with another order for about three pins and away we go.

MY BRIMBANK Disabled artist Margaret Haig calls St Albans home. She credits art with helping her overcome stress and adversity in her life. She speaks with Laura Michell. How long have you lived in St Albans, and what brought you to the area? I have lived in St Albans for 26 years. I came here because the MS Society and Ministry of Housing provided me with a house suitable to my special needs so I can remain independent and have access to shopping and transport. What do you like about where you live? I like that it is close to most churches and transport. I like that I can travel to beaches, parks and entertainment easily. What, if anything, would you like to change?

How long have you been drawing and how did you get started? Since I was 17. When I was 42, I had a stroke and lost the use of my arms and my neurologist at the time suggested I try drawing and painting with a pen and brush in my mouth. For 12 years

I don’t think there is much I would change. Maybe a wheelchair park for children and adults who otherwise wouldn’t be able to exercise. I was a member of the mouth and foot painters association, but then with physio I regained the use of my hands and started to draw with my hands again. I then started trying different mediums How has art helped you over the years?

As a paraplegic and born with hypothyroid, my doctors told my mum I would never achieve anything, but art has given me a positive outlook. It gives me patience and a way to get my mind on something other than my suffering and focus on the good things. I enjoy landscapes, seascapes and still life.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir pays homage to the Republika We applaud what Eva Maddox and her crew are doing at Ragusa Republika. Here there are no shortcuts, cutting of corners or scrimping. Everything is high class and stylish, the dining room itself elegant and warmed just right on the chilly night we visit. That hands-on approach extends to just about every aspect of the food, from house-made stocks and up. Eva and wine expert Pino are enthusiastic out front and Team CTS – Kenny, Bennie, Nat – very much enjoys taking up the invitation of a complimentary meal. The prices here are on the high side – but punters most definitely get what they pay for. Our Croatian food adventure starts with a bang and hardly ever lets up. Warm, fresh-baked rolls are sensational and served with olive oil and (house-made) ajvar (relish). Zagorski strukli are traditional baked pastry pillows filled with ricotta and truffle oil ($19). We get one apiece – and it’s almost like they float to our eager mouths. The squid ink dumplings that come with crni njoki ($20/$39) are almost as light, though it is the fresh-as calamari with garlic and chilli that truly grabs the attention. The chicken noodle soup is the big hit of the night. It has just the right amount of oil to lend every mouthful a velvety feel. And, yep, the noodles are housemade. Bennie is very satisfied with his svinjska

He reports that while the marinated and roasted pork belly meat is not fall-apart tender, it remains moist and “just right” to his way of thinking. Ribarska popara – traditional seafood stew with paprika, chilli, tomato and polenta ($42) – juggles the delicate and the lusty just as well as I have been expecting. The one dish that falls short of delighting us is Nat’s lignje u proseku of roasted calamari with potato, capers and prosek ($41). For all we know, this could be an outstanding rendition of this dish. But the combined sweetness of the onions and dessert wine leaves us more puzzled than anything. Strudla od visnje (sour cherry strudel with hazelnut ice cream, $17) and knedle (plum dumplings with plum sauce and sour cream, $17) are every bit as perfect and sweet-withsome-sour as father and son were hoping for. Comparable properties Knowing what comparable properties have sold for in recent months is a very strong guide as to the price range a property you are interested in will achieve on auction day or that you need to meet when you decide to make an offer for a private sale. Make sure that the comparable properties sold quite recently, since some areas will see considerable growth in six to 12 months. Selling agents will be able to give you more accurate information based on the

Initial research There is a wealth of information right at your fingertips. You can simply Google a suburb to discover the median prices for both houses and apartments, which, right from the start, will give you an excellent indication if this is somewhere you can afford. If you find a property that appeals, you can even find out when it last sold and for how much. There could be old photographs online that will show you if subsequent owners have done any renovations. Plus, there will be any number of comparable properties in the area. It is important that you do this research independently of the selling agent, if only for the peace of mind it will give you: no matter what you hear from other sources – the current owners, the selling agent, your family – you will know what the facts are because of your own research.

SPORT Brimbank Bucks ready to take dream run all the way After seven years operating as a junior club in the Rugby Victoria ranks, Brimbank Bucks decided to take the plunge and enter its first senior team into the premiership division, the state’s second-tier competition, this season. The Bucks were not just happy to be there and make up the numbers, they have taken the league by storm in their inaugural season. Bucks coach Tia Suemai has led the Bucks to the finals at their first attempt. “It’s been a brilliant season,” he said. “No one expected that we’d do this good. “It’s been a bit of a Cinderella story, but when I saw the calibre of players coming to the club, I thought we’d make some noise. “Playing finals makes it a special season.” Just like the regular season, Brimbank is not content to merely be making up the numbers in the finals. The Bucks will kick-start their finals campaign on Saturday with a view of climbing to the top of the mountain.

“It’s up to us now to go all the way,” Suemai said. “We’re pretty confident, but it’s just about keeping the boys grounded. “Let’s just take each week as it comes like we have throughout the season.” Brimbank has enough star power to trouble any side in the finals. Jerry Meafou has featured in a Rugby World Cup with Samoa. Lucky Mulipola, also a Samoan international, had a decorated career in New Zealand, playing for the Highlanders in Super Rugby and Nelson Bay in provincial rugby. Sili Leota is a two-time Dewar Shield winner with Melbourne Unicorns. Outside of those genuine match-winners, Brimbank has a playing squad that has bought into a team ethos, which has been the key to its success. “The boys have really bought into what’s best for the team and what it means to be part of a team,” Suemai said.

“There’s a real brotherhood and making history has been our main theme. “There’s a real push to get better, keep each other honest and just support each other.” Brimbank is on course for sustained success. Numbers in the junior ranks are growing with boys and girls seeing a clear pathway. Keilor held off a fast-finishing Sunbury Kangaroos to give the side a shot at earning a grand final berth next week in Essendon District Football League Women’s premier division. For three quarters the Blues were easily in control of the game, but the Kangaroos worked hard to move to within 12 points in the last quarter. Like good teams do, the Blues steadied to win, 8.5 (53)-5.4 (34). Blues coach Ron Sikora said in terms of preparation for the game, it could not have been much worse. The Blues were missing eight players out of their best 22. “We had girls going overseas, girls working and some of the VFL girls getting called up,” he said. “We had some iffy things happen before the game, it was always going to come down to our start.” And it was the strong start that proved the difference. The first three quarters were all the Blues, kicking the only six goals.

Sikora said he knew the side had the potential to put on such a game. The Kangaroos threw everything at the Blues in the final quarter, but to the Blues’ credit they steadied when they needed to. “Ten minutes into the last quarter we had five of our best players on the bench through injuries,” he said. “They [Sunbury] were able to kick away and it got scary. We had to get them [injured players] back on the ground and even it up again. “Credit to the girls to be able to weather the storm and stick to the structures rather than play down the line and play unrealistic footy.” Brooke Todero, Tanay Barbuto and Lisa Kirby kicked two goals each for the Blues. Sikora said Erin Bult was clearly best on ground. Christie Roberts played her best game of the season, while Shenay Thomas and Rachael Knight also had strong games. United in a cup crusade By Lance Jenkinson Calder United stands on the verge of creating its own epic slice of history. The Victorian women’s soccer powerhouse will meet Box Hill United in the Nike FC Cup final at CB Smith Reserve on Sunday evening, aiming to become the competition’s first three-peat winner. The final will feature the same two teams that starred in last season’s decider, in which Calder beat Box Hill United 3-1 to become the first back-to-back winner of the competition. Calder president Eric Psarianos can sense a real hunger in his camp to secure a third title in a row. “Winning three in a-row is unprecedented,” he said. “The girls are pretty focused and want to create a bit of history. This would be pretty special for them.” On the other side of the equation, Box Hill United is going to provide a hell of a test. Is there a better motivating factor than redemption? Box Hill gets that chance after last year’s gut-wrenching loss. “I’m sure Box Hill will be gunning for us,” Psarianos said. “They’ll want to get one back after we beat them last year.” Box Hill United is a better team than it was 12 months ago. The club recruited strongly in the off season and has the experience of a final to draw upon, an advantage Calder had over it last season after beating FC Bulleen Lions in the 2017 final. “They’ve got a lot of new players and they’ve also got those players that were there last year who have developed,” Psarianos said. “They’re building and they’re getting stronger. “I think they will be tougher. They will be hungry for it, as well, having lost it last year. “That can be a pretty good motivator in itself.” Calder has also improved and is a better side than 12 months ago – a scary proposition as it aims to win all trophies on offer this season. Coach Mark Torcaso has used the earlier rounds of the Nike FC Cup to get playing time into some of the younger players with stunning results. holders, six bottle holders, four 12-volt power outlets and a useful under-floor storage compartment behind the third row of seats for extra security. Maximum towing capacity is 2700 kilograms with the V6 engine, but just 1650 kilograms for the hybrid.

Nissan Pathfinder has been on sale in Australia since 1987, long before the term SUV was invented and vehicles of its type were simply called 4WDs. The current (fourth-generation) Pathfinder arrived here in 2013 with smoother styling and aimed at the suburban market. Subsequent upgrades, the most recent of which was in 2019, have made it more refined and safer, and with technology added. Pathfinder comes with the choice of a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine or a supercharged 2.5-litre petrol/electric hybrid and either twoor four-wheel drive. The previous diesel alternative was dropped for the gen-four model. There are four equipment levels: ST, ST+, ST-L and Ti, with prices ranging from $43,390 for the Pathfinder ST V6 2WD through to $69,390 for the Ti Hybrid. In a sign of the times, the premium for equivalent hybrid models is a reasonable $3000.

Engines / transmissions

The petrol-only Pathfinders are powered by an upgraded 3.5-litre V6 engine, while the hybrid variants rely on a supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit plus a 15kW electric motor. Our test ST was fitted with the V6 petrol engine, which now delivers 202 kW of power and torque of 340 Nm at a very high 4800rpm. Its Direct Injection Gasoline system provides better wide-open throttle performance for improved fuel economy and lower emissions. All 2019 Pathfinder models are equipped with Nissan’s third-generation Xtronic continuously variable transmission with D-Step logic control, which simulates shifts in a stepped gearbox to suit drivers who won’t adapt to efficiency of CVT units.

Styling

While early Pathfinder 4WDs were quite square and rugged in appearance, the latest models have evolved into the typical, softer SUV style with smoother edges and sleeker profile. At the front is the distinctive Nissan design signature V-Motion grille and headlamps with boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights. Alloy wheels are 18-inch in the ST, ST+ and ST-L. The Ti steps up to 20-inch units.

At just over five metres in length and nearly two metres wide, Pathfinder is large enough to fit seven seats in comfort and still provide 453 litres with all seats in place. This can expand to 1354 litres with the third row folded and 2260 litres with second and third rows down.

Infotainment

Information display is through an embedded 8.0-inch colour touchscreen that is sharp and

easy to read. There’s Bluetooth phone and audio streaming with voice recognition that’s easy to pair. There are twin USB ports on the lower grades, three on the top-line Pathfinder Ti. The entry-level ST Pathfinder doesn’t come with satellite navigation, although it is standard on all higher-specced variants and also includes 3D mapping graphics. ST-L and Ti variants get a 13-speaker Bose premium audio system, while the Ti looks after rear seat passengers with a tri-zone entertainment system with wireless

With its large exterior dimensions, Pathfinder is a bit of a climb for smaller occupants, although the high driving position is a plus. It can be a bit of a handful to drive around town, especially in tight parking spaces. The extra power and torque is noticeable and the big SUV moves sharply from a standstill thanks to the use of a CVT automatic. On the open road, the added grunt together with firmer but not uncomfortable suspension and interior space make for a comfortable cruiser. Like most modern SUVs, Pathfinder is almost car-like in its refinement and general feel. Handling is reasonable, although with its relatively high centre of gravity, you can’t drive a Pathfinder as though it’s a car. Fuel consumption from the V6 Pathfinder is listed at 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres in 2WD models and 10.1 with 4WD. We averaged in the mid 11s in our ST 4WD.

Summing up

With more than three decades on the Australian market, Nissan Pathfinder is a tried and proven performer both on and off the road. Although it’s due for a new model, recent upgrades have added to its safety credentials and kept it up to date. Adding to the value equation, Nissan has gone with the industry flow by increasing both the time and distance of its standard warranty to five years and unlimited kilometres.
